LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR OKAY, GET IT OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM I have been reading the FORCE FED column for quite a while now, and I can't decide if this guy Travis Henderson has some kind of neo-fascist agenda, or he if is just incapable of "connecting the dots" and thinking for himself. I suggest that he read something other than his (certainly dogeared) copies of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly books. Mr. Henderson smugly suggests that Sen. Byrd is "whining" in his well-considered warning to the American people about the unprecedented dismantling of our nation's Constitutional "checks and balances" because of an adequately anticipated and forewarned terrorist attack on 9/11 that this administration ignored, and now refuses to investigate. (Where was the Air National Guard? Why were they told to "stand down" on that day?) We are witnessing the end of our Constitutional republic. The Trans-Afgahn Pipeline is a Reality! And it has been planned for years! Under Halliburton with guess who as the CEO? You know the answer to that question, don't you Trav? But I'm sure that you're right - This isn't a conspiracy, it’s a coincidence, right? Sure it is! Sen. Byrd is 85 years-old, and I'm pretty sure he knows something about the U.S. Constitution. That "war" that we just fought, was a lie! There were no weapons of mass destruction and the mass graves that we just found, are filled with the bodies of brave Shiites that the elder Bush abandoned so his partner Saddam could stay in power! Just as he did in '89, with his other business partners the Chinese, when those brave students took over Tiennamen Square and he raised a glass to their butchers. But I'm sure it's just a coincidence that SARS is originating in China a closed society! Aren't the WHO and the WTO part of the same O? Another coincidence, huh? You might want to quit cheering on the people that are making us all slaves. WAKE UP! - Dave Carroll, Lahaina
an accidental bombing. Wake up! Do your research and get the facts. The American war machine continues to do what it does best; conquer, divide and suck up the resources. Pull the CNN and Fox syringe out of your arm and take the red pill. - Bobby Parrs, Kihei
WARNING: NATURE HAPPENS Two people died in Kipahulu two months ago, when a flash flood swept swimmers in a pool over a 192-foot waterfall. How can we better warn visiting mainlanders about certain hazards that they are not used to? Many areas of the mainland are so settled and so controlled, that people have an unconscious belief that anything dangerous will be fenced off or prohibited. Even if they swim in the ocean on the East Coast, they have no idea how different the ocean is here. To people from Iowa or Illinois, flood is a slow rise that tops the levees, no conception of a flash flood. Standard warnings are: Never turn your back on a wave. If you are about to get hit, dive under the wave. Don't go out on an inflated air mattress, the wind and current can take you away faster than you think. Coral cuts. Don't swim in murky water (sharks), or at dawn or dusk. Watch where people are swimming and not swimming. A rogue wave can suddenly sweep someone off a cliff that looks safe (like the 10 Japanese swept into the ocean at Keanae). Also, for hikers: Watch the mountains above you for rain, not where you are. Never dive into a pool you haven't explored beforehand. Leptospirosis. Be aware of rock falls. Don't climb, rock here is much more crumbly than on the mainland. Surely the tourism industry, the county and the state, who all profit from tourism and encourage it, have a responsibility to warn as well as entice visitors. There are many possible formats: videos shown on every incoming plane; brochures; programs on Channel 7; public service announcements on all the video channels; signs. More needs to be done. Creative advertising types should design the warnings, not lawyers trying to reduce liability for the state and county. Maybe we could get Lilo and Stitch to make warnings. - Sally Raisbeck, Makawao
POWER PLAY It’s obvious that Mr. Henderson's information sources are either CNN, FOX or some other corporate entity whose sole purpose is to misinform the sheepole. It's also obvious that his opinions are fueled by their propaganda. Thanks to the Internet, we the people have the ability to obtain alternate sources of information that usually collide with the conglomerates. Since when was the war over? Poles - you gotta be kidding me!! Patriotism at fever pitch … get a clue! Liberation Square was a staged event by the media, CIA and some of Chalbi's freedom thugs; and “how convenient" that all the alternative journalists were murdered the day before the event in

WEIRD SCIENCE
An obscure California law makes it shockingly easy for anyone to anonymously force a motorist into a formal hearing over his driving skills, according to a May story in the Southern California newspaper OC Weekly. The Department of Motor Vehicles said the so-far-underused law was designed to allow relatives of diminished-skill elderly drivers to ease them off the road, but that the legislation places no limits on who can use it. Any complaint, even a bogus one with no proof, leads to a formal hearing at DMV with license suspension a possible outcome, and DMV says it must enforce the law unless the legislature changes it.
Curator Mark Norman of Australia's Melbourne Museum revealed in January that he had captured and photographed the male of the world's most sexually unequal species. When the blanket octopus male (2 cm long) mates with the female (6 feet long), it uses a special extension arm to transfer sperm from its penis (after which the male dies). Females, which may weigh 10,000 times as much as the males, are typically found with several such extension arms lodged inside them.
ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT New Product Launches: "Purring Kitty" software that makes Nokia cell phones vibrate continuously to create a "discreet massager" (according to the British firm, Vibrelet). A healing stone that when heated, is a smell-remover, a sterilizer, and a treatment for heart disease (according to the developer, the government of North Korea). A fashionable but electrically charged woman's antiassault coat, with rubber lining and vinyl outer layer sandwiching 9-volt circuitry that, when armed, delivers a finger-in-awall-socket-type jolt to anyone who touches it (from Advanced Research Apparel). And the 4-year-old, but recently trendy, half-inch, gold-enameled good-luck charm in the shape of curled feces (from Ryukodo of Kyoto, Japan).
UPDATE As reported in News of the Weird in March 2002 (to apparently many skeptical readers), the 37-year-old female inmate who died at the Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Saskatchewan, Canada, succumbed from a toxic reaction to methadone that she had consumed by drinking the vomit of a fellow inmate who was on a methadone maintenance program. A coroner's inquest in March 2003 heard witness after witness describe inmates' practice of trading their methadone-laced vomit for various inmate favors, and the two inmates who admitted vomiting for the victim have since been additionally sentenced for drug trafficking.
READERS' CHOICE Lynda Taylor, 38, was arrested in Stuart, Fla., in May and charged with aggravated assault, specifically, wearing perfume, spraying Lysol and lighting scented candles. She and her husband, David, have been having marital trouble, and David, who suffers from extreme chemical sensitivity, says Lynda is purposely trying to kill him to get his recent worker compensation settlement check.

mauitime@mauitime.com Mr. Restaurant Owner – Adios, amigo! I hope you're happy. You've managed to find a way to get rid of your best employees, our good friends and a lot of the reason why we come to your restaurant. It's tough to see the whole picture while your eyes are glued to the bank statements. Not everyone can afford to work for you full-time. Not everyone can have the luxury of working just one job. Your bartenders are, or were, part of the draw. They were part of the deal. It isn't just cheap food and cold drinks that keep us coming into your restaurant week after week. But Mr. Mighty Buck has once again flexed his muscles and the best two bartenders in your shack, one of which has been with you for almost a decade, are out of a job. Why? Because they can't afford to work exclusively for Mr. Penny Pincher and his new employment policies. Open your eyes, unplug your ears and do everything you can to pull your head out of your ass because those girls were doing a fantastic job and I for one am disappointed that you have chosen to reward their loyalty to you with a pair of pink slips. Show a little respect for the working class - the ones without the investment capital - and try to figure out whether having a strictly full-time workforce full of drones is more important than having two caring, loyal employees that made your restaurant what it is, or was. Special thanks to the bar manager for trying to fight for our girls and, I know it's a cliché but damn the man! - Lost my people (and my appetite!) the corporate way

If Newspapers Were Cars, They'd Be Yugos After Jayson Blair, the real trouble with the media Finally, something that Democrats and Republicans can agree on: the fact that no one trusts the news media. A CNN-GallupUSA Today poll taken in the wake of the Jayson Blair scandal indicates that just over a third of Americans trust news organizations to get the story right. Now that the dust from that mess is beginning to settle, it's time for America's editors, publishers and producers to stop blaming rogue reporters like Blair and face the dreadful truth: they produce a shoddy product. Blair's editors may have coddled a drunken druggie, but The New York Times consistently publishes the finest national and international reporting available in the United States. Even so, hardly a day passes without at least a half-dozen entries appearing in a corrections section whose hilariousness more than makes up for the paper's nocomics policy. On May 28, the paper 'fessed up to five spelling mistakes (Friedman instead of Freedman, a "z" dropped from Pizzarelli, Helmut Newton rather than Lang). The none-too-hip Newspaper of Record also called the Beatles' song "All My Loving" "All My Love." My favorite goof, though, was this: "An article in Business Day on Friday about a legal dispute involving the price of a sculpture formerly owned by Humana Inc., the health insurer, referred incorrectly to Dorothy Cherry, the widow of Wendell Cherry, a co-founder of Humana who collected artwork. She is alive." Welcome back, Dorothy. Anyone who deals in words makes mistakes. This column went out a few weeks ago with "includes" in place of "included," implying that ex-CIA director William Casey was still alive and toiling at the Bechtel Group. For the record, he's dead. Bye, Bill. Such innocuous blunders, if they occur infrequently, are easily forgiven. But they're ubiquitous. And many media mistakes cross the line into untruth. I was shocked by the errors in a 2002 Times piece about the construction of a new U.S. military base in Kyrgyzstan, a subject I happen to follow. Referring to the Central Asian state's nationality, the writer used "Kyrgyzstani"--there's no such word--in place of the correct "Kyrgyz." More damning, the story's central thesis--that Kyrgyzstan had assumed strategic importance to the U.S. after 9/11 because it bordered Afghanistan-was wrong. There's a large, mountainous country (it's called Tajikistan) between Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan. My letter to the editor pointing this out didn't make the letters page, but The Times did run a tiny twosentence correction. The entire article was a lie, but even the anal-retentive types who read the corrections section would think it

only contained a minor geographical error. Pundits were surprised that few of Jayson Blair's victims contacted his editors to complain about his misstatements. Not me. As the frequent subject of printed and broadcast features and interviews, I regret to say that only a fraction of them even get basic facts right. I tell reporters that I work for Universal Press Syndicate; they often call it United Media. I've been called blond and brunet, thin and fat, Todd and Tedd, Rahl and Rail. Anyone who deals with the press has suffered similar indignities. There are countless problems with the way "news" is collected and disseminated, starting with excessive reliance on official press releases (why are Homeland Security color code
announcements reported as news?), the use of "stringers" (most readers don't know it, but some quotes are phoned in from "the field" by anonymous employees to deskbound reporters) and insufficient fact-checking. But the real reason that Americans don't trust what they read in the paper and watch on TV is contextual spin. Here are some examples from the May 28th Times. Bear in mind that I'm using The Times to illustrate the problem precisely because it does a better job than most of its competitors. Odds are that your paper is far worse: … In a piece about the allied occupation of Afghanistan, Carlotta Gall included the following quote by Maj. Gen. John Vines: "Some 25 years ago, as Afghanistan was wracked by war,
the world looked the other way. [Our] presence here today reflects a commitment not to repeat that mistake." Actually, the United States and the Soviet Union began fighting a proxy war in Afghanistan 25 years ago. We did not "look the other way"--quite the contrary. Afghans would surely have been better off had "the world looked the other way." Gall's piece lets Vines' historical distortion stand without correction or clarification. … The respected Committee to Protect Journalists accused U.S. forces of firing on Baghdad's Palestine Hotel during the war in Iraq, asserting that they deliberately killed two European reporters even though "no gunfire or RPG fire had come from the hotel or its immediate vicinity." The Times buried Christopher Marquis' incendiary report about this claim on page A13, thus freeing Page One space for a fluff piece on wealthy Manhattanites who hire advisers to help their 4-year-old children find the right private school. A story that should have become a national scandal dropped out of the news. … Another buried A13 article, by Eric Schmitt, began thus: "Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld suggested publicly for the first time yesterday that Iraq might have destroyed chemical and biological weapons before the war there." A typical American news junkie might consider this stunning revelation, coming after repeated Administration claims of the contrary, front-page news. RUMSFELD ADMITS: WE LIED in 72-point type sounds about right, coupled with a lead editorial calling for Bush's impeachment--but not to Schmitt's editors. Each day's newspaper and evening news broadcast are miracles, the astonishing result of hundreds of dedicated (and, for the most part, honest) professionals rushing to meet deadlines. Unfortunately, too many media executives allow the pressure to produce to undermine the primary reason we buy their product: to learn the truth. MTW

Short Films, Big Money Maui Film Fest brings people, economic diversity & dollars White, sandy beaches, temperatures in the mid-80s and ideal summer waves. Makes you ask yourself, “Why wouldn’t people want to come to Maui?” Upon crossexamination, you’re able to answer your original question, but only with a list of more questions: “Didn’t they just change the terror alert from tan to taupe or something? How much is that federal airport security charge on plane tickets? Do people really want to go through all the hassles of the rigorous inquisition that now accompanies a trip to the airport?” Sort of makes the debate between a road trip to Vegas and checking in baggage to go to Maui, well, questionable. With a lethargic national economy struggling to right itself and air travel regulations turning what was once a painless halfday of travel from the mainland into a modern day epic journey, the economy in Maui could use another selfreliant tourist draw. Enter from stage left, The Maui Film Festival at Wailea. “It adds a new facet to the island,” said Radha Arora, general manager of Four Seasons in Wailea. “It’s not just the beaches and the resort towns anymore. It’s made Maui an island of the movie industry.” “How can one week of movies do so many big things?” you ask. Well, it works on a couple of levels. Most directly, it brings people over from the mainland to attend the event. This pumps real dollars into the economy and puts bodies in hotel rooms. Along with those visitors comes expendable income, expendable income leads to profit and profit is good. Event organizers Barry “I am the Maui Film Festival” Rivers and his wife Stella have seen the benefits of the festival extend beyond just Wailea or even Maui. “It’s got all kinds of benefits and the whole state gets it. Last year, when we ran the numbers, the economic benefits were around $12-$15 million,” Rivers said. “It will be bigger this year as well.” The festival also shows up at a time during the year when local merchants are looking for business to pick up. “The good thing about the Maui Film Festival is that it comes at a time when summer business hasn’t quite hit,” Michele Parker, general manager of The Shops at Wailea, said. “It gives us exposure and, for Wailea as a whole, it’s putting us on the map. All of us.” Local businesses recognize what the festival brings and are responding in a big way. “They wouldn’t be spending the kind of money they are if they didn’t,” Rivers said. Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Café, one of the businesses in The Shops at Wailea, is

not only one of the festival’s main sponsors but will actually host several of this year’s events at their store. Another local business will be presenting some of the filmmakers with specially designed watches for their participation in the festival. They have moved from strictly beneficiaries to team members in the effort to bring people to the festival. On another level, you have to look at the event from a year round, long-term perspective. The film festival plays a huge role in branding Maui and showcasing the island to important people in the film industry. That kind of exposure doesn’t come easy and half the fight is getting word of the festival out there. “We generated over 163 million impressions of the festival last year worldwide: television, print, magazine, radio, on and on,” said Rivers. “Once we get them here, it’s a great opportunity to profile the island to people in the industry and really get their wheels spinning. They start to come up with different locations Maui has that they might not have realized were available.” Once the movers and shakers of the film industry have been introduced to the island by the film festival and further enticed by tax incentives, little by little we start to see Hawaii on the big screen. We begin to notice that more and more television shows are airing Hawaiian vacation episodes. And we, whether you like it or not, get to see Maui on all the reality TV shows you can handle. “It [the festival] is huge as far as how Maui is presented to mainland filmmakers and mainland studios,” Film Commissioner Benita Brazier of the Maui County Film Office said. “It’s a prestigious film festival much like Telluride and Cannes and Sundance. As far as what it brings to our economy and our local people, it’s just invaluable.” The film festival also creates regular, returning business for the island, which gives businesses and our economy something to count on. Attendees tend to come back year after year and there is a lot of opportunity for word-of-mouth advertising. “It’s a great chance to get repeat and new business,” Arora said. “When people go home, they talk about it with people they know. It’s great exposure for Wailea and Maui. We already have bookings for next year’s film festival.” At any level, more money spent in Hawaii, is more money made in Hawaii. Though it might seem like the roads are already too crowded and there isn’t enough island for the entire world to come visit Maui, having special events that bring visitors to the islands is key in keeping the local economy afloat. Promoting Maui, and Hawaii, as untapped resources for the film industry is a building block for the strengthening and stabilization of our economy and keeps the flow of money from the mainland to the island alive and well. Although you may not know Scottish landscape sculptor Andy Goldsworthy's name by the end of director Thomas Riedelsheimer's documentary (my biggest complaint about the film is that it doesn't emphasize biographical information enough), you will have a much keener understanding of one intuitive man's ability to look within nature and physically tap into its synergistic movement in a original and thought provoking way. Goldsworthy has made his life's work of doing commissioned natural sculptures that take him to different terrains to work with the innate elements of the native landscape to create temporary or lasting works that artistically and philosophically correlate to the place itself. In his work Goldsworthy at all times chronicles his roughhewn sculptures with extensive photographs that he stores on slides, and so Riedelsheimer's film is yet an extension of this artistic process that gives the sculptures a forum for the context in which they were created. The ambient music for the film was composed by Fred Firth, and adds a lush unobtrusive background to the stunning acts of creation on hand. The film won the Golden Gate Award at the 2002 San Francisco Film Festival. There is a bold and daring element in every act of creation, but watching a man stacking stones into an egg shape on an ocean bank where the rising tide promises an unforgiving deadline to his efforts is a palpable experience. In another sequence, we watch the artist fuse icicles together with his bare hands to create a swirling work of art that will last only a few hours before melting in a sun that will briefly ignite its unknown prismatic beauty before destroying the fleeting object. The film follows

Goldsworthy to four different countries while he narrates about the creation of each specific piece, sharing his philosophies and artistic goals. The consequential evocation of the creative spirit reverberates in direct ideas of love, lust, dedication and admiration. Most endearing in the film are the failures that we experience with the artist as we come to know his temperament for accepting disappointments. For one composition, he breaks thin twigs and weaves them into a framework curtain that hangs from a tree branch. When a sudden wind picks up and breaks the elaborate fabrication apart, Goldsworthy describes how he often takes works to their very edge of collapse. It's this "beautiful balance" that he finds fascinating and we, the audience, learn very quickly something elemental about our own relationship to the physical world of nature's soul all around us. German documentarian Thomas Riedelsheimer restrains himself from involvement in Goldsworthy's process, but frequently allows himself to get so caught up in the intricate immediacy of the thing itself that he forgets to pull the camera back and give a macrocosm context to the awe inspiring sculptures. Nevertheless, as we become familiar with the repeating patterns and archetypal design themes that Goldsworthy favors, the film takes on an organic quality. In a work where the artist places carefully chosen fiery colors of leaves into a running brook, the water comes to life with energy and a painterly characteristic that moves as a multicolored brush across a canvass of water; nature's art is revealed and we are renewed. MAUI FILM FESTIVAL VENUES UNPARALLELED AMBIANCE FOR THIS YEAR’S PRESENTATIONS While the short films, silent films and feature-length films scheduled for this year’s events are amazing works of art whether viewed on a 13-inch, black and white television or on the big screen, the venues for the 2003 Maui Film Festival create an environment and experience available nowhere else in the world. Envision being almost too comfortable. You’re seated where you want, wearing what you want, next to whom you want. Imagine focusing on Laird Hamilton cutting through the water at Mavericks on the big screen, then letting your eyes lazily wander onto the majestic, panoramic landscape beyond the screen, speckled with stars, backlit by the moon and inescapably dubbed with the highest quality surround-sound provided by the industry’s best experts and accompanied by the unparalleled outside natural world that is Maui. You are at the Tommy Bahama Celestial Cinema at Wailea, situated outdoors, far away from any traditional movie theater and plopped strategically in the nighttime beauty that accompanies the slopes of the Gold and Emerald Golf Course. Instead of worrying about what unwashed miscreant might plop him or herself next to you in a normal movie theater, you can chart out your territory with your favorite blanket and invite only your personal A-list of movie watching company to join you for the evening. Just when you think you have experienced all that nature has to offer, you pick your spot on Wailea Beach in front of Four Seasons Resort to watch one of many brilliant silent films accompanied by live music at the Tommy Bahama
SandDance Theater. As the sand beneath you swallows your toes and the ocean behind the screen teases your senses with the sweet smells of the sea, you try to remember what you were doing the day before, what you were worried about and you begin to wonder where all of your stress ran off to. Another serene Maui evening blended perfectly with the latest silent masterpiece and coupled with a sound experience that is so close, you can literally touch it. As the show goes on, you find yourself rocking forward and backward in perfect time with the waves washing in and out along the shoreline in front of you. Instead of feeling the squish of someone else’s gum underneath your shoe like you would at a standard, run-ofthe-mill movie theater, the give under your step is from the soft sand and seashells pushing back gently against the soles of your bare feet. The price is as perfect as your surroundings. This experience costs the same for any filmgoer as it does for the sweet, on-shore breeze whistling through the palm trees, nothing. Without losing touch with the nature element that separates a Maui Film Festival venue from any other show on Earth, you recapture a small slice of humanity by heading into the Wailea Marriott. Your visit to civilization is short-lived as you step outside into the natural tranquility of the Pacific Terrace to spend yet another evening with the stars and smooth, nighttime air. The Maui Digital SkyDome lifts you high above the streets of Wailea and puts you just that much closer to the moon and all of its celestial brothers and sisters. Viewers are spoiled with an amazing backdrop set in place by the Pacific

Ocean and are kept cool by a gentle summer breeze instead of an overworked air conditioner. The movie screen is surrounded on all sides by 360 degrees of twilight perfection that stumbles into nighttime flawlessness as the sun goes down and the movie reels crank up. A few steps onto the terrace seem to take you miles away from the strictly human element that is so dominant in everyday life. Taking in all of the elevated view that you can handle, you ask yourself, “I wonder what bonehead decided to make movie watching a strictly indoor affair?” What else can you do but breath deeply, smile and shrug your shoulders. You’ll have plenty of time to ponder life’s questions after the film is over. Just as you are about to vow allegiance to the outdoor theater experience and promise never to return indoors to watch a movie, you head to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului. That’s right; Wailea can’t hoard all of the film festival’s presentations. The MACC provides a sense of structure and acoustics that push the festival’s groundbreaking films just that much further. It’s Maui meets the movie theater meets the Broadway stage. The best of all worlds are represented and pieces of each environment can be seen from the comfort of the seats all the way to the elegance of the lighting. The tiered seating and multiple levels of the McCoy Theater and Castle Theater put viewers in ideal position for the sounds and sights of the films to strike them perfectly. The physical design and layout of these venues are designed to resonate every syllable from wall to wall and floor to ceiling to ensure that every film goer, whether critic or fan, or both, experience the absolute best visual and audio phenomenon any venue could possibly provide. most spectacular footage. Scenes with Maui’s big wave pioneers Dave Kalama and Laird Hamilton really get to the core of surfing. Dave Kalama spoke with us about his experience with the film. “I’m stoked to be involved with the third part of Endless Summer and that legacy,” Kalama said. “It is a stoker for me as a surfer that they include Maui and tow-in surfing and show Peahi and the participants there in the broader sense because most people can’t see this aspect of surfing for themselves. It’s cool that it creates a buzz and keeps Maui on the forefront of exotic destinations and shows that Maui has a lot to offer as an important facet of big wave surfing outside of Oahu. Step Into Liquid helps define the essence of surfing and sells the main point of the sport – it is a lot of fun and there is a connection between surfers across the world and what they understand as the surfing experience, even though it is hard to put into words.”
American Aloha: Hula Beyond Hawaii shows how hula halau in California help bind the displaced Hawaiian community, continuing its revival of culture into the future. Hula is a vibrant cultural manifestation on Maui and is an integral part of the lives of many native people. Krystle Paet, a local hula dancer, is in touch with the heart and soul of hula dancing. “I started hula dancing at 5 years old,” Paet said. “Hula means everything. It is all around me and I can never escape it. Emotionally, hula makes me feel at peace and it is obvious in the way I carry myself that I’m a hula dancer. It opens my mind to many more things and is something that I could never stop learning.” The native people of Hawaii are the soul of the islands; unfortunately, their culture and language

were outlawed and replaced with a homogenous American system during the colonial period. Hawaii: An Identity Reborn is a profound French documentary that tells how, over the past thirty years, immersion programs in Hawaiian schools have managed to pull the Hawaiian language back from the brink of extinction. Ko‘onohi Miller teaches Hawaiian language at Maui Community College and has witnessed the evolution in the teaching of Hawaiian language and culture. “Hawaiian culture was taken away from us and by teaching the language, kids will learn to understand themselves and where they come from,” Miller said. “It is sad that my 87 year-old mother doesn’t know the Hawaiian language because the government tried to kill the culture by forcing parents to sign a pact before their children could enter public school that said the kids would not speak Hawaiian. They were strongly encouraged to get into regular American life. Any documentary that will enlighten people on Maui about simple things that locals might not even know is great.” Everyone must play a role as a steward of the oceans and Impressions of the Deep calls for visual enlightenment. “It is my heart’s desire that the photography in this film will make the spectators realize what they will lose if they are not able to prevent the further destruction of the coral reefs,” Leni Riefenstahl, the director, said. Hannah Bernard is an award-winning local

This year’s festival will screen five films that represent the soul of Hawaii: Step Into Liquid, American Aloha: Hula Beyond Hawaii, Hawaii: An Identity Reborn, Impressions of the Deep and Whale Rider. While some of these films take a more direct approach than others, they all address important aspects of the fundamental nature of life here in Hawaii. Each one is a unique look at its subject and correlates to life on the islands. Surfing is a vital part of the mystique of Hawaii, especially Maui. Step Into Liquid was made by Dana Brown, the son of Endless Summer creator Bruce Brown. The famous Jaws break at Peahi provides some of the film’s

marine biologist. “It is uplifting that Impressions of the Deep shows an abundance of undersea life in the face of the decline of the world’s coral reefs,” Bernard said. “Hawaii’s reefs have unique creatures but, due to isolation, it never had as much biodiversity as the scenes from the film. It is important to have this imagery because as educators, we must show what is there so that people develop an appreciation. Everyone agrees that our reefs are precious and deserve protection and the film gives us a benchmark to help focus on where we need to go. It is a delightful underwater wonderland that serves to recharge those of us who work in marine conservation and will inspire any viewer.” Local underwater videographer, Aldo Tassara, was inspired by Impressions of the Deep as well. “The film is simple, with great footage and is beautifully done,” Tassara said. “The premise of the film is very important. Humans are definitely impacting the coral reefs and we, as divers, must remember that we go down there as visitors. More and more people are getting certified to dive and it is essential that they are well educated and develop a deep appreciation for the ocean.” Whale Rider was filmed in New Zealand and shows many important correlations between Hawaiian and Maori people, most notably how the canoe is central to reorganizing a fractured community. Bernard visited New Zealand with Kai Makana, a group started by Hawaiian paddlers, to participate in a cultural exchange between Maoris and Native Hawaiians. “The Maori have claimed this film as their own, and it is interesting that they believe that they are descended from Hawaii,” Bernard said. “It is very inspirational and shows how we share a common human inheritance of the magical natural realms. It is about knowing who you are and what you are here to do. If you only see one movie this year, make it Whale Rider.” MTW

BEHIND THE SCENES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL AT WAILEA’S TEAM PLAYERS No one throws a party like Barry and Stella Rivers. Since its inception four years ago, the annual under-the-stars, oceanside Maui Film Festival has grown into a world class gathering. This year’s program features an outstanding collection of movies, music, entertainment (including Hawaiian favorites Hapa), fantastic awards ceremonies and tributes and some of the finest wining and dining on the island. As with any spectacular production, the festival has its own cast and crew working round the clock to make it all happen. With a staff of over 50 professionals, as well as hundreds of volunteers, this team runs like a well-oiled machine. Preparation for the festival is ongoing throughout the year as films are researched and selected, connections are made and creative concepts become realities. Founder/Director Barry Rivers and Co-Director Stella Rivers collaborate with Executive Assistant Ginny Kiick in the months leading to the main event. Barry Rivers credits Kiick as his “trusted sidekick (pun intended)” who keeps him sane and holds the office together while fielding calls and sorting through the “hoo-ha” of it all. Rivers said the action rises to a fever pitch as the festival date nears. West Coast Director of Strategic Planning Julie Friedman networks opportunities with stars, films and companies on the mainland. Travel Coordinator and Language Translator Chelsea Hill has spent the last month booking full travel arrangements and hotel accommodations for over 150 guests using a new database from PilotWare Systems. Public relations are handled by Baker Winokur Ryder, the company that represents many of the people involved with the entertainment industry, and Saundra Saperstein, who was the press relations person for the Sundance Film Festival for over 20 years. Director of Operations Bob Craver is taking care of building and tent setup and Event Manager Jeanine Thomason will coordinate the stage, “making sure that the lights go on and everyone’s there on time and where they ought to be.” Box Office Manager Andrea Dean is on the gig starting a month or two ahead of time and has done “an amazing job” running ticket sales with the new in-house system provided by Synercom/edi., continuous 24-hour, online ticketing and an increase in sales projected to triple last year’s numbers. “Web Dude” Bob Schoenecker runs the website with the help of J.D. and program book pages, while Michael Rose facilitates the connections for social affairs asespecial Events consultant. Print Traffic Coordinator Julia MacMillan is responsible for notifying filmmakers of their acceptance into the festival and follows through with materials for the program guide and getting the films to the event on time. In addition, there are the festival consultants, production of the event program, technical direction and projection, the trailer and tribute reels, an architect and even a festival astronomer. Last but not least, there’s “The Wonder Dog”. Chew Qi serves as the Rivers’ “twenty-four seven” spiritual advisor whose duties include financial advice, psychiatry and blood pressure management. Sounds like a whirlwind but these guys pull it off with style every time! The Rivers have assembled a topnotch team of experts to keep the spirit of The Maui Film Festival alive and thriving. “The vision is what it has always been - to put together the best little film festival on earth,” Rivers said. “And to do it in a way that has the best films possible with a commitment at its core to compassionate vision and lifeaffirming storytelling.” Rivers takes great pride in the many talented people who work with him to create a strong program and adds that this year, “the quality of the films is unmatched." Media from all over the world will be invading Maui during the Maui Film Festival. Television crews, freelancers with cameras and scores of microphone-toting reporters will greet celebrities as they enter parties and films and, if they’re lucky, may even get a snapshot of or an interview with one of the big-name attendees as they wander the beaches of Wailea. What a great way to spend a week on the beautiful island of Maui! US Weekly, the Toronto Star, the New York Daily News, USA Today, the LA Times, Variety and People magazine are a few of the many print media attendees that are flying over from the mainland. Extensive in-depth reporting will be their official reason for the Maui visit but most would probably consider the act of covering the festival a mini vacation from the hustle and bustle of the cities in which many of them live. Check local listings for when E! will be airing a one-hour special on the film festival. Other television shows that will attend the festival include Entertainment Tonight, KTLA Morning News and Movie Television. Here is your chance to be on-screen and a chance for the island of Maui, especially Wailea, to get some free publicity. “It’s becoming an international event,” said Michele Parker, the general manager of The Shops at Wailea. “Over the last four years, much to Barry and Stella (Rivers’) credit, tons of various media have become very interested in the festival.” Parker said the entire island benefits from the press coverage. With the incoming press, celebrities and guests, the island will see a noticeable increase in sales. Grab your camera and head down to Wailea during June 11-15! You may get the opportunity to snap some photos of celebs and, for those of you who have always dreamed of being a part of the paparazzi, you might just get your shot to blend in with the all of the media that will be here for this year’s festival. The fourth annual Maui Film Festival at Wailea brings stargazing to a new level this year with the addition of three inaugural awards to the event’s schedule. This tropicalthemed celebration of cinema is quickly gaining momentum with a dramatic increase in ticket sales, extensive media coverage and a veritable “who’s who” of celebrities in attendance. In 2002, Silversword Award recipient Clint Eastwood’s participation in the festival had Wailea buzzing with excitement. Last year’s guest list included John Corbett of Sex and the City and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, renowned talk show host Larry King, actors Bo Derek and Rosanna Arquette and recent Oscar winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist). Barry and Stella Rivers’ original concept of bringing creative and innovative movies to the island is steadily evolving into a highly esteemed and established event. With ceremonies scheduled to honor four of film’s finest, the 2003 festivities are gearing up to be an exceptionally memorable and momentous occasion. Complimentary cocktails begin to flow on Thursday, June 12, with the first awards reception courtesy of Bombay Sapphire. Grab a glass and raise a toast to Academy Award winner Geena Davis, recipient of the inaugural Stella Award “for advancing the status of women throughout the film industry by breathing life into characters that empower, enlighten and entertain.” With her successful career in film and television, Davis brings a unique charm and sincerity to roles that celebrate the depth and strength of the female spirit. Her big screen debut in 1982’s Tootsie, led to an impressive body of work in such diverse genres as sci-fi, comedy, drama and children’s films. Davis earned her Oscar for her performance in The Accidental Tourist, followed by Academy and Golden Globe nominations for Thelma and Louise and Golden Globe nominations for A League of Their Own and Speechless. Thursday’s gala continues with the inaugural Lights! Camera! Passion! Award presented to Rob Reiner “for his heartfelt professional commitment to making films that matter and his long held personal commitment to work for social justice and the triumph of the human spirit.” Reiner has received critical acclaim over the years as a versatile filmmaker, from his direction of the cult classic This is Spinal Tap to box-

office hits Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men and Ghosts of Mississippi. Reiner’s romantic comedy Alex & Emma will be screened as this year’s first Celestial Cinema feature. With several Academy Award, Golden Globe and Directors Guild of America nominations to his credit, Rob Reiner is recognized as a driving force within the industry. He is also honored as a children’s advocate and political activist and was recently appointed as chairman of the California Children and Families Commission. The 2003 Silversword Award goes to Sir Anthony Hopkins. Partygoers will be bubbling with anticipation as the PiperHeidsieck Champagne Reception kicks into full gear on Friday, June 13. Hopkins’ “creative contributions to the art and soul of filmmaking” span over three decades. With his Oscar winning performance in Silence of the Lambs, British Academy Award wins for Shadowlands and The Remains of the Day, nominations for Nixon and Amistad, numerous critics’ awards, and two Emmys, Hopkins has earned international respect and praise for his artistry as an actor. Not to be outdone, Mr. & Mrs. T will close out the ceremonies with a Premium Bloody Mary Mix Filmmakers Brunch on Saturday, June 14. Sip on a cool one under the sun as the inaugural Navigator Award is presented to Greg Kinnear “for carving a course of distinction through the turbulent waters of the entertainment industry.” Kinnear’s creativity and determination are evident in his bold career segue from late-night talk show host to feature film star. Critics were pleasantly surprised by his debut in the romantic comedy Sabrina and Kinnear was nominated for both Oscar and Golden Globe Awards for his heartfelt performance in 1997’s As Good as it Gets. Lead roles in Smile Like Yours, You’ve Got Mail and Auto Focus also showcase Kinnear’s versatility and endearing screen presence. This star-studded celebrity line-up is sure to attract film buffs throughout the island, so hurry over to the box office before they sell out. Fill up on free spirits and hobnob with entertainment’s elite at the 2003 Maui Film Festival. Oh, and don’t forget to catch a few movies while you’re making the rounds! BY MAT SEAVEY
A Taste of Wailea So what are you doing this weekend? Is the same old list of boring options running through your head? Why not shake up your routine and really impress your date with a spread of exotic culinary treats prepared by twelve of Maui’s top chefs? Add to that the spectacular backdrop of sundrenched Wailea and a double feature of quality entertainment beneath a twinkling canopy of stars, and you’ll be sure to create a Maui time worth remembering. Yep, that’s right, the Maui Film Festival is back, featuring five days of jaw-dropping, thought provoking films, from June 11 to the 15th at the Wailea Gold and Emerald golf course and the MACC. The highlight of the festivities comes on Saturday, June 14, when the best chefs in the area gather together to celebrate the virtues of food and drink. This is no ordinary gathering; these guys are out to show everyone what they’ve got, and they’ve put together some pretty wild recipes to do it. Witness the Togarashi Spicy Frog Leg Tempura with Cucumber-Tamarind Refresher by Pierre Albaladejo from the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Perhaps just a touch more exotic than his Octopus Carpaccio
with Summer Truffle, Enoki Mushrooms, and micro-greens salad with Yuzu juice. Manfred Jonas of the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort plans to take you thousands of miles east with his Crab Rangoon with shoestring fries, but celebrates the return home with Dark and White Chocolate Chip Cookies with Raspberry Sorbet. The Diamond Resort brings us a little East meets West meets . . . somewhere in between? Chef Katsuyuki Ishikawa is brewing up some Chicken Cacciatore and Opakapaka Escab’eche (I confess, I don’t know where Escab’eche is from, but it’s gotta be some-
Chefs S. Carlsberg & D. Gemberling
where in between, right?). Chef Todd Carlos from the Seawatch Restaurant is holding nothing back with no less than four dishes. His first offering is a Peppered Snapper with Maui Onion Confit, Haricot Verte Salad and Lilikoi Ponzu, followed by Wild Mushroom Risotto Cake with oven-dried Tomato Chutney and Truffle Oil and Heirloom Tomato and Roasted Pepper Panzanella Salad with Jerez Sherry Vinaigrette. A classic sweet wraps up this station: Kula Strawberries dipped in dark and white chocolate. Tired of struggling through exotic names that you can hardly pronounce? Tough, there’s more. How about the Vol au Vent de Volaille by S. Carlsberg and D. Gemberling of Lobster Cove and Harry’s Sushi Bar? Say that ten times fast and you’ll definitely need a bite of their Dark and White Belgium Chocolate Terrine to soothe your twisted tongue. They’re also offering traditional Belgian Shrimp Croquettes and a Medley of Poultry in Puff Pastry (is that like . . . a flock?) with Veloute of Mushroom Sauce. Not to be outdone, Chef Adam Condon of Spago will be providing a refreshing taste of home with his Island Style Opakapaka Ceviche as well as his Hibiscus Soup. The Grand Wailea Resort Hotel and Spa, Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Café & Emporium, The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui, Nick’s Fishmarket, and the Wailea Marriott, an Outrigger Resort, will also be represented this year with a host of recipes that are too numerous to mention. I will say, how-
Chef Adam Condon ever, that your sweet tooth will definitely be satisfied with delicacies like the Piña Colada Napolean and the Granny Smith Apple Lumpia with Tahitian Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Free shuttles will be available from all of the Wailea Resort Hotels as well as from the special events parking area. There’ll be plenty of libation sipping opportunities too, with the list of sponsors headed by the likes of Bombay Sapphire, Mehana Brewing, Fetzer, and Stone Creek Winery. A Taste of Wailea starts at 4:30 and ends at 7 p.m., with two feature films playing at 8 and 10 p.m. in the open air Celestial Cinema. The price of admission is $95 per person and includes food, drink, and the double feature. Small price to pay for guaranteed satisfaction from that special someone (wink wink, nudge nudge). MTW

NOW SERVING LIQUOR
WINE OF THE
WEEK
BY ANTHONY MOORE
Mars Bredif 2001 VOUVRAY $14.99
The history of the vineyards of Vouvray has roots dating all the way back to the religious monks of the Touraine. Since the 4th century, monks have owned most of the vineyards in Vouvray. Covering over 4,500 acres of the northern banks in the Loire Valley, the vineyards have only one varietal, Chenin Blanc. The character of this mainly cool climate grape is a beautiful, attractive honeylike texture with a white flower aroma. The main thing that stands out about Vouvray's Chenin Blanc, is how well it ages. These wines have the potential to last as long as any other varietal. The main task for those in Vouvray, is to capture the true fermented fruit character in their bottle, as is the challenge for its neighbors to the east, Germany. The wine of the week is the 2001 Marc Bredif Vouvray 100% Chenin Blanc. This bottle does capture the true fruit character of the Chenin Blanc. It has a nice fruity, aromatic attack when it hits the palate and the minerals show with a strong acidic finish. Pair this wine with fresh, sautéed mahi mahi in a creamy butter sauce. Enjoy!

cocktails and dancing under the stars. To kick off the five-day event on Wednesday, June 11, The Maui Film Festival at Wailea hosted its first party at the Fairmont Kea Lani in the Palm Court. Guests ate scrumptious food and drank heavenly wines while listening to a surprise musical guest at this Opening Night Twilight Reception. If by chance you missed the Twilight Reception, don’t worry. You have seven more parties to attend! Tonight at 5 p.m. in the Ballroom at the Grand Wailea, the inaugural Stella Award will be presented to Academy Award winning actress Geena Davis. A mere $25 will put you in the same room with Davis, who has appeared in films such as Thelma and Louise, Speechless, Tootsie, The Fly, Beetlejuice, Earth Girls are Easy and, my alltime favorite, A League of Their Own. Following Davis’ award ceremony, the inaugural Lights! Camera! Passion! Award Tribute to Rob Reiner will take place. Reiner started off in show business as an actor. He starred in All in the Family and then directed Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. Reiner is co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment, which has turned out hit movie after hit movie. Later tonight, there will be a private VIP Reception hosted by Spago at the Four Seasons Resort. Wolfgang Puck is the worldrenowned culinary genius who owns the Spago restaurants. His motto is, “Innovate Cuisine, Stunning Dining Rooms”. Da-ling, don’t pass up your chance to eat like a king or queen. Get your feet rested for a night of dancing under the moon and stars, as the Tommy Bahama Tropical Café will host the Tommy Bahama Starry Night Moondance. Admission is $30 per guest. From 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., guests will eat savory dishes and, with the help of Ketel One, will sip on delicious martinis. Your ears will be seduced by the music of Dr. Nat and his eightpiece band, Rio Ritmo. Dr. Nat’s “songs resonate from the islands with Afro-Cuban rumba, timba and son rhythms, Jamaican reggae and Brazilian sambas and capoeira grooves, as well as lush harmony, Hawaiian inspired ballads”. Chicas, pull your hair up and put a flower behind your ear because you are going to have a night you will never forget! You won’t have all day to rest your pigs before the next party begins. At 9 a.m. on Saturday, there will be a Mr. & Mrs. T Premium Bloody Mary Mix Filmmaker’s Brunch at Longhi’s in The Shops at Wailea. What a perfect way to start a day and to
end a hangover from the Starry Night Moondance! The Navigator Award will be presented to Greg Kinnear, who began his career with Talk Soup on the E! Television network. Kinnear has been in several films such as Sabrina, Dear God, As Good As It Gets, Smile Like Yours, You’ve Got Mail, Mystery Men, Nurse Betty and Loser, just to name a few. This party is unfortunately sold out. There is a waiting list so send an email to andrea@mauifilmfestival.com and you may get in. At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Taste of Wailea will commence. It will transpire on the Private Terrace at the Wailea Gold and Emerald Golf Course. Tickets are $95. There is also a waiting list for this party. Scrumptious food and mouth-watering wines will be served. Your stomach will be in sheer ecstasy with each bite. Several chefs who cook in Wailea will prepare the food. Saturday night at the Tommy Bahama Café in The Shops at Wailea, there will be a party that is a true treat. Tommy Bahama will host the Taste of Chocolate. Just $25 will get your sweet tooth aching for more chocolate accompanied by Piper Sonoma Champagne. There will be a surprise musical guest as this event as well. After a night of champagne, chocolates and a bit of hankypanky, get ready to cake on the sunscreen, put on your best swimsuit and bring your sand sculpture tools to the Sand Sculpture Contest. Prizes will be awarded to children, adults and professionals who can fashion the sand sculpture that most closely resembles a movie. This party is free and will be on the beach in front of the Grand Wailea Hotel. The Contest begins at 9 a.m. The Film Festival’s last party will be a Father’s Day Concert and Picnic at the Diamond Resort at 4:30 p.m. Musical guests will include Barry Flanagan, Nathan Aweau, Charles Ka’upu and Jerry Santos. These musicians are known as “Hapa”. According to the Tokyo World Music Review, “Hapa is a troupe of individuals who, through the power of Hawaiian music and dance, transcend nationality, creating self-worth, dignity and respect for all people.” Bring your father to this party and celebrate his paternal service and the power of music. Tickets can be purchased on the web at www.mauifilmfestival.com <http://www.mauifilmfestival.com/> or by calling (808) 572-3456. Don’t miss all of the great food, the chance to mingle with celebrities and your golden opportunity to be part of the glamorous essence of Hollywood!

Super Groms 7am Saturday, at Launiupoko Beach Park I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't pumped to go see all the little rippers strut their stuff this Saturday. It's the coolest thing in the world to see the future of the surfing and bodyboarding scenes on Maui doing something that they love to do and having the community back them. There's a contest for all kids, regardless of their pleasure: shortboard, longboard or bodyboard, all of them are tons of fun to watch. (IAN HOUSTON)
The Perfect Theater 10pm Thursday & Friday, 9:30pm Saturday at the SandDance Theater, Wailea Forgive me for saying this, but you would be a damn fool to pass up this experience! A big screen on the beach, literally ON the sand with the ocean rolling up, sea spray tickling your nose, the twinkling stars and moon (full on Friday!) acting as aisle lighting, a cool tropical breeze caressing your skin, AND there's a classic, aesthetically pleasing, artistically correct, black 'n white silent feature showing with beautiful piano accompaniment. Ah…awfully romantic, ain't it?!

ROOTS, Maui Style 9am Saturday, in Lahaina Town Nothing's more important than paying tribute to those that have made our home what it is today. The King Kamehameha Floral and Pa'u Parade is an event unlike anything you are used to seeing in Lahaina. Instead of gobs of tourists bumping into you with their noses buried in the "Things to See on Maui" section of their travel handbooks, this is a way for you to experience a uniquely Hawaiian celebration in its most authentic form. (IAN HOUSTON)
Chocolate is muy bueno Taste Of Chocolate: 10pm Saturday, at Tommy Bahama’s. There is an old Spanish proverb, “Las cosas claras y el chocolate espeso, “ which translates to “Ideas should be clear and chocolate thick.” And if you believe like I do, that the four basic food groups are milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate and truffles, then we’ll be dukeing it out over the dreaded last bit at this Maui Film Festival at Wailea event – oh, trust me, I am clear on this!
Moo Moo and More Moo Celebrate Father's Day at the 23rd Annual Upcountry Farm Fair 9am Saturday & Sunday, at the Eddie Tam Memorial Complex in Makawao In this most eclectic array of farm fare imaginable, this event features a clown show, live music, a cooking contest, cultural performances, soccer games, local food, horse rides, ice cream and floats, a drawing to win a 2002 MZ 125 FunX motorcycle, arts & crafts, a farmer’s market, and a livestock show and auction. Whew! I love cows just as much as the next girl, but the Lani Moo Keiki Cooking Contest will be the big draw for me, with categories for desserts (Cadbury Egg Pie perhaps?) and after-school snacks like my favorite, Cheez Wiz Casserole! Mmm.

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY AMY ALKON
THE WHEAT GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER I'm an average-looking guy with classic virtues (loyalty, fidelity, gentleness), but women keep ditching me for "bad boys." How do I convince them they're better off with a good guy like me than some dog who's guaranteed to mistreat them? Good And Lonely Convenience stores are stocked for people who know what's good for them and have no intention of eating it. When's the last time you screeched into 7-11's parking lot at 3 a.m. to grab a pint of alfalfa sprouts? There's a reason women aren't burning rubber to get to you. Low self-esteem queens aside (they feel like dirt and want guys who treat them accordingly), maybe you're not just "good," but good and boring. A woman wants a man who keeps her guessing -- not about whether he'll be done robbing the gas station in time to drive her to yoga -- but at least about what he'll say next. That's the difference between good and fun and good and boring, which generally goes over like a double-shot of wheat grass juice: You know it's supposed to be a tiny green fountain of youth, but you still can't bring yourself to drink stuff that looks like something a goat spit up, and tastes like it, too.
STUBBLE IN PARADISE My new girlfriend is really beautiful: big brown eyes, creamy white skin, and thick, dark, flowing hair. The problem is, dark hair not only grows on her head, it's visible above her upper lip. How do I help her realize she needs to shave more than her legs? Hairy Secret It's great when your girlfriend bears a striking resemblance to a famous TV personality, providing the personality isn't Geraldo Rivera. (Evidently, men sometimes make passes at girls with mustaches – or maybe the lights were dimmed to bat cave level where you met.) The answer, by the way, is not mowing or shaving, but waxing, electrolyzing, or bleaching. The word that it's defoliation time should be dispensed to her by anybody but you. A woman who thinks her boyfriend finds her anything but "really beautiful" is a woman whose handlebar mustache is dwarfed by her confidence problem. Ask one of her friends - one you trust not to reveal her source - to suggest she get pruning. Emphasize that you find her extremely beautiful - you just think she'd be even more gorge if her radiance weren't partially obscured by that fur on her upper lip. If all goes well, she should soon be looking more like your princess than your Prince. Got a problem? Write Amy Alkon, AdviceAmy@aol.com (www.advicegoddess.com)
BY KOZMIC KEV
ARIES: You're on the move. Tie up loose ends as far as social obligations go. Travel and personal mobility are urging you to push forward. Friday and Saturday’s full moon is bound to lift your spirits. The rambler-and-gambler within is speaking to you. TAURUS: Surrendering to your material desires seems a likely way out of your current dilemma. Don't make any hasty buys that you may end up regretting later. The full moon pumps up the libido, has you needing to pay bills and collect from those that owe you. GEMINI: A sense of happiness, renewal and adventure permeates the air. The full moon Flag Day party seems like a good idea. Just make sure that all flags are welcome. You’re in a good position for making friends while getting your way. CANCER: Dealing with legal issues, authority conflicts, and long-range goals becomes personal. Having a forgiving heart will help set you free. The full moon gives you an opportunity to help someone less fortunate. You're maturing, deal with it. LEO: Opportunities to put on your party hat and mingle with those you love come easy. The full moon sensitizes your creative abilities, increases your generosity, and makes the whole world your home. Your appetite for sensual encounters is growing. VIRGO: Performance anxiety isn't becoming of a perfectionist. Learn to have fun doing a variety of normally mundane tasks. Relax into a state of renewed confidence. The full moon invokes old memories, and thoughts of home and mother. LIBRA: If it's not the wind in your hair, it's the wild hair up your arse. Taking advantage of educational opportunities will promote your long-range vision. The full moon has you thinking about your environment, your close friends and your ability to travel. SCORPIO: How are you with white-knuckle rides at amusement parks? The anxiety before the action is much worse and longer than the process itself. The full moon asks you to treat yourself to a massage, or a long hot bath. Enjoy something calming. SAGITTARIUS: This is a great time for a compromise or to tone down your opinionated ways. The challenge involves committing yourself to something or someone who’s as hilarious as you. The full moon in your sign gives your popularity a boost. CAPRICORN: You'll find yourself organizing and completing projects that require a critical eye to detail. Finding government work is easier this time of year. The full moon highlights dreams, karma and all areas of the subconscious. You'll improve your personal appearance. AQUARIUS: The things you love should be dominating your life. Art, music and love affairs appear to be a way of life for you. The full moon has you getting together with friends, and meeting new people. Your level of commitment may be tested. PISCES: You’re making waves, surfing waves, or being tossed by them. Think good thoughts in comfort. Confront your paranoia. You're becoming a stronger person. The full moon gives you a chance to show your talents and skills. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Courtney Cox 6/15/64, Paul McCartney 6/18/41, Waylon Jennings 6/15/37 kozmickev@sunset.net
