LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR NO GMO'S Now that we have a mayor concerned about sustainable agriculture, I want to encourage him to avoid allowing companies onto Maui that use Genetic Engineering (GE) in food production. Genetic Engineering produces Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and involves inserting genetic material from other species into the DNA of food products. The genetic material can come from animals such as insects or fish. The resulting products may be unfit for human consumption. I was fortunate to be able to attend a presentation by attorney Steven Druker, the public interest attorney who represented the anti-GE movement in an effort to have these foods removed from the market. Although he lost, the judge ordered the disclosure of internal files about GMOs. Much of that information is now available to the public at biointegrity.org. Here is some of it: 1. "… after heat processing both the GE and non-GE beans, the concentrations of three harmful substances were significantly higher in the GE samples." 2. "...hundreds of scientists have signed an open letter to the world’s governments warning of the hazards and calling for a moratorium on all GE foods." How does this affect Hawaii's native plants? It seems as though these Frankenstein GE plants have the potential to affect other plants as well. They have already contaminated food crops on Kauai and elsewhere. We are so eager to invite new business here and to believe all the good things their promoters tell us, that we ignore the risks involved. Let’s pass on this pitch! Am I alone here? Let's make Hawaii a GMO-free state and let's start right here on Maui! Go to higean.org to find out how. - Kathy Corcoran via email

I WANT TO LIVE SAFER I have no idea what is wrong with the Maui Police Department. Almost a year ago, I witnessed a car being broken into. I was concerned for that person and their belongings so I contacted the police. I saw the person, I saw their face and I wrote down the license plate number of the car they drove away in. I gave the information to the police along with a way to contact me. Over six months later, the police contacted me to identify the person. SIX MONTHS later! Why wasn't anything done sooner? Apparently cars get broken into often in this spot because there is always fresh glass on the ground from the most recent break-ins. Why aren’t we able to catch these guys? It is not like they’re criminal masterminds. If the police could pick up the phone and call an EYE WITNESS, that would be a good start. Continuing with the fun, this evening I watched as fire fighters, the police and the EMS pried a man off the street. He was riding his bike in the same direction as traffic,

in the bike lane and was hit by a truck. The truck took off as soon as he hit the man and left him there to fend for himself on the pavement. Our kind and loving Kihei Branch of the police department was generous enough to leave his bicycle behind for anyone who might want to grab it and fix it up. Call me crazy but don't you think that might be an important piece of evidence? Maybe that's all the guy has. I don't like having my car radio stolen to feed someone's meth habit. I don't like having to listen to my friends catalog all the things that were stolen from their apartment, which was broken into twice in one week. Are the police to blame? Is it the courts being too soft? Is it a lack of funding? I want to live safer. - Name withheld by request

CONSPIRACY CEREAL Wow, let's take this down a notch! Is it funny to anyone else that every week, one letter to the editor or story is about how the government is out to get each and every one of us? A letter about how George W. Bush has some evil secret agenda and the power to see that agenda come to reality? Is that the prevalent mind-set amongst the ultra-liberal crowd these days? Is that what everybody talks about while they're sitting around the campfire listening to halfassed bongo players drum away and post hippie-era junkies learn how to play the guitar? All you conspiracy theorists, looking to make some waves and expose the government's involvement in every scandal from 9/11 to the lack of surf last week, sit down, listen to what you're saying, grab firmly onto both of your ears and pull your heads out of your asses. You sound like a bunch of morons. According to your ranting, Bush is the sadistic lunatic that controls everything from what time the sun comes up to who gets to play around with those “harmless” biological and nuclear weapons. All this, while Saddam Hussein is apparently a saint who is simply portrayed in a bad light by our media. I guess that by doing what you're doing, you guys are performing an invaluable service in keeping our politicians and governmental infrastructure in check. Yeah, okay. Please, don't stop writing letters because I always need something to make me laugh and I always need something to use when I run out of toilet paper. - Sammy Winder, Maalaea

COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time.

Inter-island Airfare 1. How often do you travel between islands? 2. What was the price of your last inter-island airline ticket? 3. How many airlines offer interisland flights? 4. Do you think that the lack of competition in inter-island airfare creates an opening for price fixing? If yes, how? If no, explain? 5. How have the recent rate hikes and suspension of flight coupons affected your/peoples’ willingness to travel island to island? 6. How does this affect tourism and, therefore, our economy??

KEONI WAGNER Spokesman for Hawaiian Airline 1. (After hearing the first two questions) It seems like the first two questions are geared toward general consumers. I'm just going to disregard the first couple of questions if that's alright. (Well, I'm guessing that you travel a lot but probably more for business.) Yes. 2. (And since you work for the airline, you probably fly for free?) Yeah, I fly on passes, space available passes. 3. I guess I'm not sure but I believe it's uh…four. Let's see, maybe five, there's Hawaiian Airlines, Aloha Airlines, Island Air…Pacific Wings- (Isn't Island Air a part of Aloha Air?) It's a subsidiary of Aloha, different airline but it's a subsidiary. So that's four. I don't know, is Big Island Air still flying. There's also a commuter helicopter operation off of Maui, if I'm not mistaken, that goes to Lanai… I believe. I'm not sure about that. 4. I think that airline pricing in any market even to a certain extent where there is a monopoly…which is not the case here, the market helps establish pricing. In other words, its prices are set where the market will respond and there is a great

deal of competition in this market in terms of pricing. We see it most in the wholesale market or in corporate travel agreements where larger clients can command better prices because of volume. There's a great deal of diversity in fare levels and competition for groups and so forth. 5. We don't see much of a change in travel demand in recent months. So one might conclude from that, that there hasn't been a great effect. 6. (With that said, I guess my last question kind of answers itself.) Yeah, I think so.

RUDI KING Frequent inter-island traveler 1. Twice a month. 2. $156 3. I think three. Aloha, Hawaiian and … (Island Air?) Yeah, Island Air. (Isn’t Island Air a part of Aloha?) Um … I’m not sure. Maybe. 4. Yes. People don’t have any choice of how they’re going to get there. They have to fly with one of them. They can charge whatever they want. So yes, and it sucks. 5. They’ve got me by the balls. It pisses me off. It’s to the point where either I can go, and have to spend whatever they’re charging … or not go. I have priorities on the other island that outway the costs. Until I can drive there, it’s pretty much my only option. 6. Tourists aren’t going to want to spend that hundred and whatever dollars (they don’t even get the Kama’aina fare) on a flight to another island. So either one island is going to get all that money or they're not going to spend it at all. They’re not going to spread the wealth.

COMPLAINT INVESTIGATOR State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs 1. Myself? (Yeah.) I hardly do. 2. Price? About $89, I guess. (Roundtrip?) Yeah, roundtrip.

3. At least three (At least three?) Yeah, or at least two. Two, maybe three.

4. There could possibly be but I don't know if it does necessarily. 5. Hum…It may. But if they have no choice, they have no choice, right? (So they're kind of stuck with it?) Yeah. 6. I think it does to a certain extent affect us. Economy wise, I think unless we're talking about substantial price hikes, people may just pay what's offered to them. But I don't think that's necessarily fair.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES No state has had more serious budget anxiety attacks recently than Oregon, which saw some public schools close early this year after running out of money. However, another crisis surfaced in April when death-row inmate Horacio ReyesCamarena told prison officials he would reluctantly accept the kidney transplant that would save Oregon taxpayers most of the $120,000 a year they now pay for his dialysis (and must, by law, pay until his execution, which may be as long as 10 years away, because of appeals). Some lawabiding Oregon kidney patients are being turned down for transplants because posttransplant drugs are too expensive.

LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES In May, a priest of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma, Ohio, Monsignor Robert V. Yarnovitz, pleaded no contest to indecency charges for an incident at a conference in nearby Huron Township. According to police, Yarnovitz was wandering, drunk and pantsless, through the Sawmill Creek resort and when confronted by police, he repeatedly and aggressively answered their every question by uttering "Michael" and a slang phrase commanding someone to perform oral sex on him. (A spokesman at Yarnovitz's church said the incident "was not characteristic of Monsignor.")

PEOPLE OUT OF CONTROL Barbara Schwarz is history's most prolific filer of Freedom of Information Act requests, according to a May profile in The Salt Lake Tribune. Schwarz says she is a daughter of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and a granddaughter of President Eisenhower and said she endured a number of kidnappings and mind control and microchip-implanting procedures in her quest to learn the whereabouts of her alleged husband, whom Schwarz said disappeared after he was charged with murdering Barbara Schwarz (yes, the same one). She has, said the Tribune, "carpet-bombed" "every" federal agency with "thousands" of FOIA requests, followed by "dozens" of follow-up lawsuits (one containing 2,307 pages, naming 3,087 defendants).

THE DISTRICT OF CALAMITY (CONTINUED) Last year's edition of the Washington, D.C., public school system's standardized-test guide for elementary students was such a disaster of errors and typos that the new edition was anticipated to be a showcase of near-perfection. However, some critics told The Washington Post in April that this year's guide was even more embarrassing. For example, one question, featuring an image of nine flowers, asks the student to count them out, but the only multiple-choice answers available were numbers between 22 and 30. Another contained only this information: If 234 people saw a theater's first show, and 456 saw a theater's second show, how many people saw both shows?

CULTURAL DIVERSITY In February, a 6-month-old girl was married in a Hindu ceremony in a village in southern Nepal, according to an Agence France-Presse report. Her cradle-robbing husband is 3, and their farming-cast families feared that if the children didn't tie the knot then, each one's marriage prospects would diminish as they got older.

mauitime@mauitime.com I'm a middle-aged haole living in Southern California. I want to share my two cents on an issue that seems to be bubbling over there in Hawaii. What is all the confusion about the true meaning of sovereignty and native Hawaiian lands? Ultimately, the genesis of "re-homesteading" seems to lead to business and economic self-interest. To all the ethno-centric "native" Hawaiians that feel ripped off by history, please come visit us here to see what your mainland Indian brothers have chosen to do with their tribal lands. Please see for yourself the lack of respect for their own precious lands that less than twenty years ago were considered "sacred" backcountry tribal sanctuaries. In some of these rural areas of Southern California, the impact could be described as overwhelming. There are enormous Vegas-style casinos sprouting almost overnight in the middle of nowhere. Please, bring your golf clubs, a buffet-sized appetite and plenty of money to support our backcountry Indian casinos, hotels, golf courses and water parks. They are well run by Vegas outfits and are pouring money back into our communities with fat profits. The chiefs and tribal councils are making their people rich. This is a glimpse of your possible future Hawaiian tribal land. Spare us all of the isolationist, elitist "Kanka Maoli" chest-thumping. America has a grand history of spectacular sell-outs and buy-outs: Manhattan, Louisiana Territories and Alaska are a few examples. Hey, isn't it just our economic destiny? Get over it. OPED

BY TED RALL

They Impeach Murderers, Don't They? Bush Must Step Down George W. Bush told us that Iraq and Al Qaeda were working together. They weren't. He repeatedly implied that Iraq had had something to do with 9/11. It hadn't. He claimed to have proof that Saddam Hussein possessed banned weapons of mass destruction. He didn't. As our allies watched in horror and disgust, Bush conned us into a one-sided war of aggression that killed and maimed thousands of innocent people, destroyed billions of dollars in Iraqi infrastructure, cost tens of billions of dollars, cost the lives of American soldiers, and transformed our international image as the world's shining beacon of freedom into that of a marauding police state. Presidents Nixon and Clinton rightly faced impeachment for comparatively trivial offenses; if we hope to restore our nation's honor, George W. Bush too must face a president's gravest political sanction. As the Bush Administration sold Congress and the public on the "threat" posed by Saddam Hussein last winter, White House flack Ari Fleischer assured the American people: "The President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense would not assert as plainly and vocally as they have that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction if it was not true and if they did not have a solid basis for saying it." That's unambiguous rhetoric. But since allied occupation forces have failed to find WMDs, Bush is backtracking: "I am absolutely convinced with time we'll

find out that they did have a weapons program," the C-in-C now says. What's next? Claiming that Saddam had WMDs because, you know, you could just feel it? A ferocious power struggle is taking place between Langley and the White House. "It's hard to tell if there was a breakdown in intelligence or a breakdown in the way intelligence was used," says Michele Flournoy of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. No it's not. Career analysts at the Central and Defense Intelligence Agencies, furious at Bush for sticking them with the blame for the weapons scandal, are leaking prewar memoranda that indicate that the Administration covered up the spooks' assessments, making the case for war with a pile of lies constructed on a bedrock of oil-fueled greed. A September 2002 DIA study said that there was "no reliable information on whether Iraq is producing and stockpiling chemical weapons," but Bush ignored the report--and told us the exact opposite. After Bush used the discovery of two alleged mobile weapons labs to claim "we found the weapons of mass destruction," CIA "dissenters" shot back that Bush had lied about their reports and that they "doubted the trailers were used to make germ agents, not[ing] that the plants lacked gear for steam sterilization, which is typically necessary for making bioweapons." Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld parried: "Any indication or allegation that the intelligence was in any way politicized, of course, is just false on its face. We haven't found Saddam Hussein either, but no one's doubting that he was there." Rummy also floated the CIA-

debunked tale of an Iraq-Al Qaeda link. Both factions are missing the point. Calling for a full Congressional investigation, Sen.. Carl Levin (D-MI) of the Armed Services Committee, says: "I think that the nation's credibility is on the line, as well as Bush's." But not even the discovery of a vast WMD arsenal should save Bush now. Assuming that one accepts preemption as a legitimate cause for war--and one ought not--you must possess airtight substantiation that a nation poses an imminent and significant threat before you drop bombs on its cities. Evidence that falls short of 100 percent proof, presented in advance, doesn't pass the pre-empt test. Bush claimed to have that proof. He said that Iraq could deploy its biological and chemical weapons with just 45 minutes notice. He painted gruesome pictures of American cities in ruins, their debris irradiated by an Iraqi "dirty bomb." It was all a bald-faced lie, and lying presidents get impeached. George W. Bush, like Richard Nixon, "endeavor[ed] to misuse the Central Intelligence Agency." George W. Bush, like Richard Nixon, "[made] or caus[ed] to be made false or misleading public statements for the purpose of deceiving the people of the United States." (The legalese comes from the first Article of Impeachment against Nixon, passed by the House Judiciary Committee on July 27, 1974. Faced with certain impeachment in the House and conviction in the Senate, Nixon resigned two weeks later.) In the words of Bill Clinton's 1998 impeachment, George W. Bush "has undermined the

integrity of his office, has brought disrepute on the Presidency, has betrayed his trust as President, and has acted in a manner subversive of the rule of law and justice, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States." Nixon and Clinton escaped criminal prosecution for burglary, perjury and obstruction of justice. George W. Bush, however, stands accused as the greatest mass murderer in American history. The Lexington Institute estimates that the U.S. killed between 15,000 and 20,000 Iraqi troops during the fraudulently justified invasion of Iraq, plus 10,000 to 15,000 wounded. More than 150 U.S. soldiers were killed, plus more than 500 injured. A new Associated Press study of Iraqi civilian casualties confirms at least 3,240 deaths. Although Bush, Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice denied such legal niceties to the concentration-camp inmates captured in their illegal invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, these highranking Administration henchmen should be quickly turned over--after impeachment proceedings for what might properly be called Slaughtergate--to an international tribunal for prosecution of war crimes. Anything less would be anti-American.

Murine Typhus When 20-year-old Maui resident, Zane Monteleone was hospitalized, he never thought that the reason for his stay would be a disease he managed to catch from a tiny flea. For a week his head pounded, his body ached and he experienced severe nausea. The idea of the flu crossed his aching mind but not murine typhus. "I went to the ER and I was told I had a virus and it had to take its course in order to go away," said Monteleone. "Two days later, I went back to the ER and I was then hospitalized." By now, you are probably wondering what murine typhus is and whether or not you are at risk. Murine typhus is a nasty little rickettsial disease caused by the evil teamwork of a pair of creatures, Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsial felis. In other words, rats and fleas are the key players in this painful little ailment. Opossum fleas can also carry the disease but fleas from rats and cats are the most common hosts of murine typhus. People contract the disease from an infected flea. While a flea is biting you, it will, well…poop on you. The flea’s feces store the typhus. When the bite starts to itch, your fingers are drawn to the area, you scratch it and bango presto, you’ve got typhus. By scratching the area, you are opening the bite and therefore making it possible for the infected feces to enter your body. Less common but still possible, typhus can be contracted by breathing contaminated, dried flea

feces. I thought secondhand smoke was bad. The symptoms for typhus seem like those of the flu. The incubation period is six to 14 days. Infected individuals get headaches, fever, nausea and body aches. Five or six days after these symptoms, a rash develops that begins at the trunk of the body. It then extends to the arms and legs. The disease can last for several months and may require hospitalization if left untreated. According to the Texas Department of Health, there are several ways to protect you and your family from murine typhus. * Clean your yard so that rodents, opossums, and stray cats cannot live there. * Remove any brush or trash, keep the grass mowed and keep firewood off the ground. * Do not leave pet food out at night as this attracts other animals. * Prevent rodents from living in your house. * Treat for fleas before you begin rodent control in your house or yard. Otherwise, when the rodents die, the fleas will search for new hosts, possibly you and your family. There are several commercial flea control products on the market. Pick one and follow the instructions on the label. * If you own pets, control the fleas on them regularly. If they come in contact with infected fleas, they could bring them home to you. Ask a veterinarian about flea control products that are safe to use on your pets. State of Hawaii Information Officer Janice Okubo said the last time she checked, there had been four reported cases of murine

typhus on Maui. They have been confirmed by results of a blood test. Yearly, between five and 10 cases are reported according to Okubo. She doesn't think there is a reason to be worried about typhus. "Typhus is a disease which will always be on Maui because of the rats and mice on the island," Okubo said. "There is no reason to be concerned about a huge epidemic on Maui." If you get rid of the mice in your home, Okuba said to treat the carpet in case there are fleas still alive. Generally, the fleas need a host in order to survive. They will look for mice and then, when the mice die, they will go after your pets. MTW

King’s Trail Triathlon It is not uncommon to see triathlon participants giving back to the sport. They give back by spreading the word. The Maui Multi Sport Club was formed to do just that, spread the word and help the sport grow here on Maui. Ed Hudcovic caught the endurance sport bug while living near Lake Tahoe, Calif. His forays into the mountains provided escape from his work as a lawyer and a sense of peace that he could find nowhere else. Since then, in addition to moving to Maui, he has traveled around the planet, competing in numerous events. From Ironman triathlons in New Zealand to Xterra races in California, the Czech Republic and Hawaii, Hudcovic has run, swam and biked all over the globe, not to mention all those training miles in between. All this to simply scratch his endurance itch and make some great friends in the triathlon community. Along the way, he realized that our island needed a high quality triathlon. After the Maui Triathlon went out with the tide, he put his energies into organizing a new event for the valley isle. Out of those efforts came the Maui Multi Sport Club and its premier event, the King’s Trail Triathlon. That was three years ago. The first year’s race attracted a field of less than 200. The second year, nearly 300 racers showed up. This year, registration for the event closed more than two weeks before the race date at 400, the entry limit. As the King’s Trail Triathlon has grown, more and more people have become involved. A couple of the more recent additions to the board of the Maui Multi Sport Club are Maui’s “Two Turtles”, Jerry and Bonnie Stowe. The Stowes have been coming to Maui for years and finally worked out the logistics of making it their home. Jerry has literally been involved with triathlon since its inception. As a member of the San Diego Track Club in the 1970s, he saw the sport come into being and some of its first races come together. His job as a telecommuting accountant and software tester for Intuit sets him up perfectly to serve as the club’s treasurer and main number cruncher. Bonnie takes on the responsibilities of both publicity and promotions. She also puts considerable energies into the solicitation of sponsorship and donations.

Both have watched the event and the local involvement grow. “We have twice as many people involved this year as we had last year. We just manage to find good people to take on tasks,” Bonnie said. Everyone involved, including the members of the board, is a volunteer. This takes some coordination and extra effort as everyone tries to manage their own lives, their training and work schedules and the tasks involved with putting on an event of this magnitude. The 2003 King’s Trail Triathlon will take place on Sunday, June 22. The race starts and finishes at the Maui Prince Resort in Makena. The Olympic distance race starts at 7 a.m. with a 1500-meter (.9 mile) swim in front of the Maui Prince. Racers then head out on a 40-kilometer (24.8 miles) bike ride through Makena and Wailea. The race finishes with a 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) run starting from the Maui Prince and heading south past Big Beach, down to a turnaround in the lava field of Cape Kinau, before returning to the Maui Prince for the finish. Traffic during the race will be detoured in the area around the course. Anyone traveling through the race area should use caution and expect delays. MAUI’S OWN “MONSTERS OF ROCK” CREATE A SUBVERSIVE MUSIC SCENE IN PARADISE Z E R O TO L E R A N C E

Zero Tolerance Certainly, hard rock music is not a stranger to Maui. Bands like Rezin, Anesthesia, Retribution, Dick Midnight, Swirly, Carnage, Stonehenge, Hand Over Fist, Tensore, and several others, have been on the fringe of our musical scene here for over a decade. Players come and go, get recycled, move off island, come back and sometimes try again. Anesthesia is one metal band in particular that has recently enjoyed a comeback, playing successful shows at DeanO’s, Casanova, and Hard Rock Cafe over the past few months, although not without some opposition from wellintended yet skeptical organizers. There are many other bands that have

10

JUNE 19, 2003

COVER STORY

been forced to get inventive and play shows at less conventional venues like at the beaches or parks that surround our tropical island. There are even up-andcoming bands, like Absence of Void and Entity, that rock (and rock hard!) with members not yet old enough to play in the few clubs and bars that feature live music, and yet have a solid following of young and older rockers islandwide. Two bands in particular have put in their time in the studio, weathered some outrageously successful gigs at popular venues, and are ready to embark on off-island tours to further their hard and heavy rock careers and see where it lands them...

Zero Tolerance’s hard-edged, heavy rock is like a sonic boom, a deep rumble that rises up from the bowels of the earth, simultaneously building momentum and producing a full-force onslaught of nature’s havoc. Before it reaches your ears, it’s in your gut, like a subversive premonition, a dreaded moment of clarity that brings you a long-awaited deliverance. Their sounds bubble and boil, like a volcanic eruption, spewing a hot, molten lava of heavy, burning chaos... its an experience that you’re both drawn to and need to escape from, but you can’t move. A primal scream rises up from your belly, stopping in your throat, taking over your whole body and you enter the matrix of primordial urges... you enter The Pit (even if only in theory - we are on Maui, you know). Vinnie Finazzo’s relentless rolling and pounding tsunamic drum force kicks in on “#7”, one of the songs currently being recorded on Zero Tolerance’s upcoming album to be released in August of this year. Rising like a scorching phoenix from the pyre comes Sean Quick, lending his thundering vocals to fill the melodic tension that hard and heavy music sears into your skull. The power of Jaxon Fuqua’s mercilessly scathing guitar playing takes you on yet another plane of rhythmic, unyielding intensity on “Jesus Crack” as he riffs and bleeds his lead all over your soul. Bassist Shawn Brewer adds his layer of deep, dark depravity, further fueling the fire. Never will you feel such complete, unified and heavy, powerful energy than on “Last Rites”, clearly a hard rock anthem to the underbelly in the making. Its the

kind of music that gets under your skin, blows your mind and sucks your soul out through your cranium. Zero Tolerance is not music for the masses - it’s music for the massive. Difficult to classify, Zero Tolerance creates an ambience of raw and powerful energy that reaches from influences of hardcore punk, old school metal, and yes, rock and roll. Jaxon, lead guitarist, prefers to think of his band’s sound as “post-milennium rock ‘n roll.” Sean Quick’s lyrics delve into the personal darkness that finds meaning within, equally created from love and hate, repression and release. In order to maintain focus, they avoid lining up too many gigs in a short period of time, which creates a palpable anticipation for the shows they do play. Meanwhile, they’re in the studio, creating new material and cutting tracks for their new CD. Jaxon puts it best, “We don’t want to play the same lame set, every fucking week. When we do shows, people come out of the woodwork and they show up, ‘cause it’s an event, it’s not a weekly thing where - ‘oh, whatever, I saw them last week. I can skip tonight.’ When we play, we play. You gotta see us or you don’t. You won’t see us for another couple of months probably.” Vinnie agrees, “That’s why we get the turnout we do, ‘cause we don’t play all the time.” Zero Tolerance further increased the respect of their audience as well as fellow musicians at a recent gig opening for a well-known punk band from Oahu. Undaunted, they reveled in the chance to “blow the doors down” and prove that they were ready to rock. The headlining act was duly in awe, and in a surprising switch of station, the sister-island punk rock veterans wondered how they were going to follow such a powerful lead. Sean Q. explains that the musical climate here is catered to tourists so “the scene as far as local bands is like, you gotta create your own scene and your following here. There’s only so many people on this island! It’s kind of a small place so we’ll support each other, get some stuff going together. So when you come to Maui, the local bands are firing.” Vinnie says, “We live on a rock together, we’re all working for the same thing. Let’s stick together, let’s push for this together to make it happen on this island to where we’re accepted in almost every bar on the island and it can happen on a regular basis. Help out the future of the music scene on the island.” “And other bands just starting out that are like ‘well we can’t play anywhere. What’s the point?” Jaxon continues. However, they both believe that the suppression and isolation that occurs from living on a small remote island does breed clarity and creativity, as well as a vital part of great rock ‘n roll music: rebellion. After creating the kind of band every

Khrinj member has always wanted, and a sound they are all excited about, garnering praise and respect from a large following on the island, the band has collectively decided it is time to head to the mainland. “We want to make Maui known ‘cause there’s a lot of good musicians on this island,” says Jaxon. Vinnie agrees, “Our goal is to get off this rock and do a tour.”

KHRINJ Thunder rumbles, lightning cracks, the sky opens up and the truth is revealed... Khrinj’s CD, Defense Mechanism, opens with crackling static and rumbling thunder on the first track entitled “Fool’s Gold”, which is an appropriate intro to the album “dedicated to awakening humanity from its slumber of self-kept ignorance.” Lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Cayce Almason, believes that music is an expression of personal, political and societal angst. In the aptly named song “Released”, Cayce laments about the pain of truth in the cycle of life and death, perfectly correlating with a backdrop of the electrifyingly dark wrath created by John Meyer on lead guitar. Ian Horneman further rounds out this balance in heaviness on bass guitar along with Hans Schopen emphatically beating the drums into an embodiment of absolution. Throughout the album, and especially on songs like “Tragedy” and “Smoke & Mirrors”, Khrinj carries that ever elusive quality of metal known as hard ‘n heavy; a tight, solid, musical chemistry. At once melodic and somber, with enough rage to pack a hot Kentucky brothel on a Sunday, Khrinj is alternately empowered

and emotive, deliberate and tortured, passionate and liberated. Musically, Khrinj manages to incorporate Cayce’s desire to play artsy punk, “So I can still scream and yell”, plus Ian’s penchant for black and death metal, and the obscure music John finds online and from magazines. Cayce explains, “The real musical influences come from within the band – we pull shit from the cosmos, from the energy the band creates with each other.” Ian elaborates, “We all have a personal preference for the kind of music we want to play, but if the energy’s there, and we’re rockin’, then that’s it.” Together since June of ’97, Khrinj maintains that every band member keeps an open mind when bringing their individual influences and preconceptions to the table. They agree to let them go and are almost always happy with the results. They do challenge each other, yet they’re all friends. Ian says, “We have our

squabbles, but when it comes down to it, we put it aside for the music because that’s what we love the most.” Not originally the lead singer, Cayce first joined the band as a backup vocalist on rhythm guitar, then later reluctantly agreed to do lead vocals, at the band’s insistence. Lyrically, Cayce’s social and political standpoint is “to have the compassion and patience to understand where people are coming from. The society we have is great, but what are we going to do with it? – that’s the question. Anarchy doesn’t work, it isn’t realistic. I’m pro-people understanding that they have a role in this country.” Cayce maintains that the music Khrinj makes strays away from traditional metal, but not in the same sense that punk has become more “like the Rice Krispies commercial” says John. It isn’t “happy friendly metal”, or even nü metal. Hans insists their newer material is even more heavy (interrupted by the whimsical chimes ringing on Ian’s cellphone), and more theatrical. “We’re just better at our instruments now,” John modestly summarizes, “and they’re better structured songs.” Ian agrees, “We’ve played together longer – when we write songs, it’s a little bit more technical, not just a basic formula.” Khrinj believes that their greatest high comes from playing live - their compensation for the challenges of maintaining an original, hard rock/metal band on Maui. Hans concludes, “The best shows I’ve ever played were shows where I lose my whole self. I’m not even thinking about or worrying about what’s coming next – we just GO!” MTW

The Monster Truck Ad Khrinj and Zero Tolerance will be kicking off the summer with Maui’s own mega-rock event called “Summer Madness”, featuring special guest Sausage Act (including members of Anesthesia), at Maui Brews in Lahaina on Thursday, June 26th. Doors open at 9pm, tickets are a mere $5, with the show starting at 10pm. Don’t dare to miss this mania next THURSDAY THURSDAY THURSDAY!

The Interview How do you describe your music? Free jazz vs. Death metal in the waiting room of an insane asylum, spiced with sphincter chords, sprinkled with heavy percussion and left to ferment for 28 days. Garnished with on-stage shenanigans and bizarre special guests. Served raw with malt liquor and your choice of madness, fear or confusion. How would you describe a typical Sausage Act fan? The typical S.A. fan is a single white male, 18-24 years old, naked, hair on fire, screaming obscenities while running with scissors and reading Bukowski, has an I.Q. of 240 but can’t tie his own shoes, is bi-polar and bi-curious, carries an average of $3200 in consumer debt at 12.25% interest, and enjoys very loud, irritating, repetitive noise. May be on parole or probation. Seems completely harmless until provoked. A typical show consists of hundreds of individuals fitting the above description, packed tightly in a small, poorly ventilated space and chugging down overpriced cocktails. They seem to enjoy it. How do you prepare for a live show? Before every show, I rewind the lip-synch tape in my Milli Vanilli boom box and practice moving my mouth so it looks like I’m really singing. I’m getting pretty good at it. And I also don’t go to the bathroom all day. I find it adds a sense of delicate urgency to the performance when you have to urinate badly. What are your musical influences? Mother Goose, car alarms, jackhammers, AM radio station silence. Favorite performing and/or recording techniques? Jumping up and down and hitting myself with a rubber chicken seems to work equally well in the studio and on stage. When recording, make sure to press ‘REC’. What are your long-term goals? What any power-hungry, money-grubbing rock-star desires. The ultimate sellout. The Sausage Act lunchbox by Aladdin. To have kids sucking Kool-Aid out of a Captain Sausage thermos has been a life-long dream. That, and doing Christina Aguilera’s laundry. What is the Sausage Act philosophy? Kiss yourself.

a mouthwatering mouthful I don’t think I’ve ever heard this word spoken just once; it’s a lot to digest in one pass. Humuhumunukunukuapua’a is the name for Hawaii’s state fish, and it’s a mouthful. It’s also the name of a beautiful thatch-roofed restaurant floating in a saltwater lagoon at the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel and Spa whose ambience and cuisine, unlike the name, are very easy to swallow. The Humu, for short, is something of a hidden secret, tucked into a bewildering maze of pools, streams and paths that comprise the lower grounds of the Grand Wailea. Its grassy spires and carved wooden railings rise up like a force of nature from a wide pool stocked with plenty of fish and the Pacific spiny lobsters that form a highlight of the menu. Tonight is my fourth wedding anniversary, and Geoff Wilson, our courteous server for the evening, was kind enough to set up a private table on our own little island where we had a magnificent view of the sun setting into the sea. Our first drinks arrived in huge coconuts with the tops hacked off (Pirate’s Gold), and as we leaned forward to drink through our long bendy straws, my wife and I thought that there was no better place to be. Our thoughts were confirmed with the arrival of a fabulous spread of pupus. The appetizer sampler stretched across the table on a long, narrow platter loaded down with Ahi Lemongrass Traps, Kalua Pig Potstickers, Coconut Prawns and Humu Ribs, all of which are available individually. The Ahi dish is their signature appetizer with Big Eye tuna speared on a lemongrass stalk and tempura fried. You eat it much like a leaf of artichoke, biting through the crisp batter and succulent ahi and scraping your teeth down the length of the lemongrass, thereby releasing its aromatic flavors. It’s amazingly delicious and a definite must-try. The Coconut Prawns are sweetly crisp

on the outside and plumply tender on the inside, served with a cool Cranberry Ginger Sauce that is a surprisingly apt complement. The Humu Ribs are tender, falling-off-the-bone baby backs that pack a tangy punch with their glazy Tamarind Habañero BBQ Sauce. Rated last only by virtue of its predecessors, the Kalua Pig Potstickers stand very well on their own with a Kaiware Sprout Salad and Mango Drizzle. Willfully ignoring the stabbing pains of gout in my toe, I charge recklessly ahead into the Ahi Carpaccio (I promise one day to live like a monk eating nuts and berries to atone for the gluttony of my youthful days). Exceedingly thin slices of seasoned Ahi overlap each other in a circular pattern with Wasabi Aioli, Smoked Yellow Tomato Vinaigrette, Hana Hearts of Palm, greens and Taro Lavosh Crackers heaped high in the center. No monk has ever eaten like this! The highlight of our special occasion approaches now in a triumphant procession down the gangplank to our private tropical islet: a huge Pacific Spiny Lobster plucked live and clacking from the pond below. Of course that was before it made its fateful journey to the kitchen, where it was magically transformed into its present steaming splendor and placed beside its accompaniments: Coconut enhanced Jasmine Rice, Sesame Glazed Vegetables and Drawn Butter, Hawaiian Chile Pepper Water, and Shoyu Cilantro-Lemongrass dipping sauces. Do I need to say how good this was? I didn’t think so – I can hear you salivating already. The Humu has a full menu of mouth-watering dishes that you will have to go and see for yourself. I’d like to thank Geoff and the entire staff for a wonderful experience and an anniversary celebration that I will remember for years to come. The combination of atmosphere, service, and cuisine make the Humu a perfect place for that special occasion, or just for relaxing and soaking in the bounty of the Hawaiian islands. And with a little practice, you too can say Humuhumunukunukuapua’a. MTW

The wine of the week is the 2000 Chardonnay from HRM Rex Goliath, which is a small winery based out of Soledad in Monterey County, Calif. This is a new winery focused on making good wine at a price everyone can afford to buy and enjoy on a daily basis. This wine is overflowing with character, all the way down to the story behind its label. Featured on the bottle, is a picture of a 47-pound rooster. The namesake for the label, His Royal Majesty Rex Goliath, was a monstrous cock the size of a small child that appeared in circus shows throughout Texas. People would travel miles upon miles just to get a glimpse of this enormous cock. He was the biggest cock of his time and, as far as I know, still holds the title. This Monterey County winery focuses on traditional varietals that many of you are no doubt familiar with: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon. Their 2000 Chardonnay is a Burgundy varietal that thrives in cool climates. Grown in the coastal region, it is the recipient of cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean and the beneficiary of mild nights that bring the grape to its proper ripeness. This wine has a surprisingly complex character. Within, are tropical hints of pineapple and banana with a soft, buttery oak finish. The cock is great with seafood, such as salmon when served with a creamy dill sauce. ENJOY!

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY IAN HOUSTON

The Art of Slack Key So on June 22, the 12th Annual Ki Ho'alu Festival is bringing slack key guitar back to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center from 2-7 p.m. "Slack key guitar?" I repeat in my head. Slack key? I know I'm new here but what the hell is a slack key guitar? I'm about to find out and, consequently, you are too. Slack key guitar sounds almost like Hawaiian singing. The gentle yodeling and falsetto have somehow found their way into a musical instrument. It's a music form as rich in Hawaiian culture as it is charming and entertaining to listen to. The steel guitar strings are fastened loosely (or slacked, duh) giving each note a tone that seems to last forever. The art form itself goes all the way back to King Kamehameha III. He employed Spanish and Mexican cowboys to assist in raising Big Island cattle especially in the Waimea region. They brought their gut string guitars; the Hawaiians loved the sound and, next thing you know the instrument and art form evolved into slack key. Hawaii has lost much of its native culture over the years and with the passing of each century, more of Hawaii seems to disappear. Slack key was not immune to the threat. Instrumental in keeping slack key alive, was the emphasis that the monarchs placed on Hawaiian music over passing generations. More recently, Gabby Pahinui, often referred to as the father of modern slack key guitar, was a prime factor in not only promoting the survival of slack key music but also in regularizing the practice of recording slack key artists. Slack key styles change from island to island and even from region to region. The lyrics and vocals reflect the area the artists are from and the humanistic element associated with learning to play. "Most slack-key players learn by ear,"

Milton Lau, the festival's organizer, said. "There's no tablature, nobody to notate, so you often learn from your 'ohana. It's a musical version of oral history." Every individual artist sounds different and often, varied tempos and alternate tunings can make the same song played by the same artist sound like an entirely different piece. Tunings and styles are closely associated with artists' familial background. These techniques and styles are strongly safeguarded and kept within the family to give their string of musicians a different sound than those from other areas or other folk. The art form has evolved from a strictly individual effort to that of a duo, group or band feel. While part of the original luster of

the genre was the individual expression available through this form, the combination of artists has brought slack key to a new level. Guitar players performing together tweak their instruments to different tunings in the same key to create a complimentary but competing sound. Slack key has reached out to other genres of music to influence the way that their guitar sounds are created. Ben Harper, among others, uses instruments very closely associated with the slack key guitar. There are four major types or styles of slack key that dominate the genre. There is an older, more traditional slack key movement that is more closely linked to the origins of the form. A second style employs numerous hammer-ons and pull-offs. A third combines visual elements with the sound of the guitar. Some artists in this classification play with their forearms, put a bag over their fretting hand or dangle a threaded needle

hanging from their teeth across the steel strings while they play. The final style is a slack key jazz type of sound that musicians like Cyril Pahinui and George Kuo employ. In addition to special guest Amy Hanaiali'I Gilliom and this year's long list of slack key pros including Cyril Pahinui and Kuo, there will be flower lei for sale, Hawaiian art and crafts and local-style food that, by itself, is reason enough to invade the Alexander and Baldwin Amphitheater. The amphitheater is open game starting at 1:30 p.m. and admission is free. This is a true opportunity for Maui to embrace and include a piece of Hawaii's true history and culture into an entertainment environment normally concerned with tourist attractions. This is a chance for tourist and local alike to enjoy a part of Hawaii that has helped to carry much of the history of the islands in its lyrics and the true feel of Hawaii in its sound. MTW

Dostoyevsky's real-life romantic experience surrounding his short novel "The Gambler" was the inspiration for this finely woven romantic comedy about Alex (Luke Wilson - "Old School"), a blocked novelist who falls in love with Emma (Kate Hudson - "Almost Famous"), his stenographer while dictating his latest novella about failed commitment. The movie flipflops between acted out scenes of Alex's novel-in-progress, as influenced by Emma, and the creeping romance between the author and his opinionated audience of one. "Alex & Emma" has a light tone of modernized '20s inflected comedy that Woody Allen would love to still be able to capture in his movies. As with most romances, it's the chemistry that counts, and Hudson and Wilson share a fetching coupling that amply discharges Jeremy Leven's buoyant script. Director Rob Reiner ("When Harry Met Sally") is long overdue for a return to the elevated level of comedy that he built his early reputation as a director on. Initially, Reiner became a household name during the '70s as Archie Bunker's hippie son on television's "All In The Family." Reiner's slouching "Meathead" character imbued a cynical yet humanistic virtue that created an anti-hero

underdog of the times. The enduring role allowed Reiner to refine his comedic timing and insight in balancing precise elements of character substance opposite socially perky dialogue to put audiences in stitches. His progression to director is that of one who closely understands the fluxing line between drama and comedy, and where to place the emphasis at any given moment. Reiner's adroit ability to move between genres of satire ("This Is Spinal Tap"), horror ("Misery") and drama ("Ghosts of the Mississippi") is evidence of his thorough awareness of tone, and genre constraints. Mr. Reiner appears in the film as Wirtschafter, Alex's fat cat publisher, who manages to drop in a few off-hand jokes of his own. When we first meet Alex, he's trying to hide in his studio apartment from a couple of Cuban goons who've come to remind him about his 30 day book deadline that will permit him to pay off the $100,000 he owes them on a gambling debt. Furniture is smashed, Alex's computer is set on fire, and Alex gets rudely reacquainted with gravity in a way that immediately causes him to hire a stenographer to provoke the blocked novel boiling inside him. Enter nononsense girl Emma to take Alex's dictation, and we're off and running on a dovetailing journey into Alex's romantic aspirations as revealed by the story he creates with Emma's naive prodding. Adam Sheldon (Wilson) is Alex's 1920's alter ego for the sake of his novel. When the character becomes instantly smitten with his comely employer Polina Delacroix (Sophie Marceau "The World Is Not Enough"), Emma is quick to interrupt Alex's flow of inspiration and interject her opinion of his "shallow" romantic desires. It isn't long before Alex is creating a secondary character that takes the form of a sensual "au pair," that he's somehow unable to compartmentalize into a suitable nationality for his novel. First she's a Swedish woman named Ylva, before Alex deems it necessary that she exist as a bawdy German maid named Elsa. There's a brief transition into a black-haired Spanish beauty before Alex finally settles on the lesser character's identity as "Anna," a down to earth girl from Philadelphia. Alex's mental gymnastics allow Kate Hudson to rifle through comic accents and costume changes of the au pairs that he conjures. It's in these story-within-the-story scenes that the movie makes its brightest comic gestures with Polina forgetting love for money, and Adam confusing jealousy with loyalty. "Alex & Emma" is not a movie that will set the world on fire. But it is a sturdy romantic comedy that will make couples happy to spend time together. If it encourages one of the pair to test the limits of his or her imagination for some creative editing from the other, then a few more novels might just be written in the coming months. MTW

Peter Sollett’s feature debut is a stunning piece of filmmaking that carefully explores the stumbling blocks of growing up, capturing adolescence at its most tender, funny and genuine. Victor Vargas (Victor Rasuk), a self-styled teenaged Casanova, despite his adolescent hubris, has a lot to learn about love. As Victor sets out to nab popular “Juicy Judy” Ramirez (Judy Marte), he discovers that there’s a difference between acting like a man and becoming one. As he and Judy slowly start to trust and be trusted, Victor learns that a lot of love has been put into Raising Victor Vargas. Rated R. 88 min. Tickets: $7 w/MFF passport. $10 single.

He’s been a member of the Jonah Livin Band, which has enjoyed weekly stints at Maui Brews with an enthusiastic following for quite some time. Turns out, Ed is leaving his island home for a following of the more romantic kind – to reunite with the love of his life, Cheryl, after 27-years apart. Isn’t that just so (sniff) sweet? This Sun. will be his final performance w/Jonah Livin – before he takes matters to heart, so to speak.

In the light of the stupendous success musicals like “Chicago” and “Moulin Rouge” have received in film recently, it’s curious that this sensual and jazzy production should be overlooked! MauiOnStage is ending their season with an uplifting and humorous look at the misadventures of a gullible 1960’s showgirl in search of true love, with notable knockout songs “Hey Big Spender” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now.”

REACH OUT AND RUSH SOMEONE Three weeks ago, while I was out of town, I ran into a guy I grew up with. We exchanged phone numbers, and he called me the next night. We talked about maybe dating when he moves back to where I live (in three months). It's been three weeks since he called, but I don't know whether I should call him. I don't want him to think I'm in a hurry to get into a relationship (we both just broke off engagements; mine, a year ago, and his, nine months ago; and we are both still young: I am 20 and he is 21). Will calling him make me seem too forward? - On Hold "Mr. Watson - come here - I want to see you..." shouted Alexander Graham Bell, making telecommunications history and the world's first needy phone call at the very same time. Mercifully, it appears that he got cut off before he could add, "...about having my baby." Ringing your long-lost friend and blurting out, "Do you want to know at the ultrasound whether we're having a boy or a girl?" probably isn't in your best interest - especially if you'd like to avoid giving the impression that your idea of a great first date is dinner and a wedding. This isn't to say that you shouldn't call at all. You could call when he's in the middle of dinner to express your concern that he might be making a tragic error in choice of telephone service provider, or to prevent him from missing out on a "free" vacation in tsetse fly-infested swampland. The telephone can also be a great tool for letting others know they're appreciated. Some callers do this verbally; others favor a nonverbal approach like heavy breathing. If this seems a little impersonal, not to worry, you'll get credit when your home phone number reads out on the guy's Caller ID. Should you favor a gimmick-free approach, you might try a conversation - an exchange in which one person phones another and asks stuff like "How are you?" and volunteers information about the kind of time they've had (or served depending on the company one keeps). Conversational calls (when made to a guy you barely know) should be spaced to seem casual one a week or one return call from you for every call from him. The idea is to leave him wondering a little - and not about whether Tommy Lee Jones will play you in the TV movie: hunting him down with dogs and federal agents, clapping him in irons, and leading him on a chain to the altar. What's with the mad rush to become your parents? There's a right time to think about getting married, and it isn't while you're still paying off the dress you wore to prom. Actually, nobody should be allowed to do anything permanent in their early twenties - a time rarely referred to by anyone who's emerged from it as "My Era Of Great Wisdom." Right now, you'd probably find yourself remarkably compatible with vast legions of men. Unfortunately, that's most likely because you have no clue as to who you are or what you stand for, and neither do they. If you marry really young, you are likely to end up sharing at least one idea: the opinion that it's really dumb to get married really young. Now, there's the perfect topic to express how much you and he have in common – you and the guy who's your first date after the divorce.

DA KINE CALENDAR

THE GRID

CLASSIFIEDS

ARIES: Eliminate the things you fear. Examine your "flight or fight" tendencies. Plunge headfirst into the deep realms of your subconscious. Your imagination flourishes. It's a good time to get an expanded sense of family and ancestral roots. TAURUS: This is a good week to start financial planning. If you have to go on a mad spending spree consider the effects of your buy. Are you supporting Third World sweatshops or are you helping the local economy by getting something locally made? GEMINI: The world of quick-witted communication turns into the world of deep-seated feelings. If you value antiques, now would be a good time to look for them. Love is still in your court. A summer solstice party might lift your spirits. CANCER: June 21st at 9:11 a.m. Maui time, the sun goes into Cancer and summer officially begins. A friend of mine once had a birthday party where she gave away old possessions, "nice things" to every guest. She lightened her load while blessing others. There's a message here. LEO: You're taking one of the most serious looks at your spiritual life that you've ever taken. Learn to make friends with your emotions. Your dreams are trying to teach you something. Sunday has some magical implications. VIRGO: Your business life and social life may begin to blend a little this week. You can look forward to rich social gatherings, new friendships and a sense of freedom. Tuesday the 24th has some very positive implications regarding education and travel. LIBRA: Get busy. This is the easiest time of year for you to make career advances. Be a leader. Make a decision and stick to it. Long distance love affairs, musical events, and advanced training are making themselves available to you. SCORPIO: All that transformation during the past several weeks was hard work. Now it's time to relax and rekindle the flame of passion that makes life a groove. Forgive others for past transgressions. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. SAGITTARIUS: You'll continue to charm people this week. You attract love, lust and compliments on your original style. Relationships get deeper when exchanges are made. Your ESP and sense of intuition are growing. Follow your heart. CAPRICORN: Although you’re still a major workhorse, things begin to slow down enough for you to pursue romance, harmony and the finer things in life. Marriage and long-term commitment could be part of the picture. You're ready for a merger. AQUARIUS: While movin’ and groovin’ like the last of the red-hot lovers, you continue to amaze me on all the constructive projects you've been able to work on. You're on the rise in income and productivity. Real wealth comes from doing what you love. PISCES: I think of dynamic characters and revolutionary heroes, when I think of you. Now is the time for you to bloom with creativity, playfulness and energy. Thursday and Friday are your power days with the moon in Pisces. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Chet Atkins 6/20/24, Ray Davies 6/21/41, Amy Brenneman 6/22/64 kozmickev@sunset.net

PUREVOLUME

BY GANNON GILMORE

THE INFLUENTS "SOME OF THE YOUNG" Man, I wish this were more of a trend. Bands really should take some of their cues from The Replacements. It's like I always say: There are three guys who should be primary influences for bands - Costello, Westerberg and Strummer. The Influents pretty much pick up where The Replacements left off. They don't have anthems that come close to "Bastards of Young" but with all the musical inbreeding going on right now, a band like this is such a breath of fresh air. Honestly though, I would much prefer what Jason White (frontman, no relationship to Jack White) does with punk rock supergroup Pinhead Gunpowder over this. But that's me. - Adeline Records

THE EFFECTION

ART

"SOUNDTRACK TO A MOMENT" The Effection is described as a Power Pop Trio. They do fall short of power in my opinion. If you want a power pop trio consult Green Day, Alkaline Trio or The Power Puff Girls. Is it a punk band? Is it a pop band? Well, yes in both cases but only in the sense that Elvis Costello was, but he had attitude and genius where these guys do not. A little gloomier perhaps and a little misleading as from looking at the cover you might think these guys to be another emo band. Not terrible but you'll come away with this wondering what to make of it. - Adeline Records

MATCHBOOK ROMANCE "WEST FOR WISHING" There was a time when I felt that I could depend on certain labels to not fall prey to the current musical climate and continue with what they do best or break new ground. To Epitaph's credit, they are doing these very things but unfortunately that includes putting out crap like this. More of that hardcore/emo hybrid junk that is getting eaten up like candy and staying as lasting in the same vein as Thrice, Finch, Taking Back Sunday, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have more bands like this than more Good Charlottes but would it be too much for these kids to listen to at least one Ramones record? - Epitaph Records

THE SOUNDS "LIVING IN AMERICA" Garage rock is starting to catch up to us! This band is some sort of cross section of Blondie, Bow Wow Wow and Joan Jett. I love how these records are even produced to sound like they were in their respective bygone eras, using the same effects and vocal tricks. Especially the drums and synthesizer stuff going on here. When I say Bow Wow Wow, I'm really talking about what the vocalist reminds me of. Well, really I'm just thinking about that mohawked cutey Annabelle singing about candy, but I digress. This band sounds like they were straight up lifted out of the mid-eighties which I declare to be the ceiling for Garage/Vintage sounding bands. Anything after that and I say Fleetwood Mac gets to put out a rap record. New Line Records

“Passion In Art” Show - 9 p.m., Sat at Maui Pizza Cafe, 2439 S. Kihei Rd. Featuring Annebelle Eastling’s art, which encompasses sensuous figures and passionate landscapes, drawn from bold lines and rich strokes of color in an abstract-impressionistic style. Also with flamenco guitar by Danny Paquette and free pupus. For more info, call 877-2200. He U`i Cultural Arts Festival - 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat and Sun. Friday Night is Art Night in Lahaina - 7-10 p.m. Stroll through dozens of art galleries in Lahaina Town for special gallery shows, featured artists-in-action and refreshments. THE FAINT "DANSE REMIXES" For those of you who miss Devo, this would be your new favorite band. Albeit a little darker. Classic new wave with a morbid twist. This record is basically a re-release of "Danse Macabre" featuring remixes or "reimaginings" by an eclectic mix of trance, techno, whatever artists making an already danceable record more likely to be introduced to dance floors than clubs. While I think "Danse Macabre" is the way to go for the new wavers, "Danse Remixes" would be ideal for the ravers. Give it a spin and an open mind. - Saddle Creek Records
