Having just come back to the lovely island of Maui, I followed your [dining editor(s)’] recommendation to dine and lunch at Cafe O'lei and Ma'alaea Grill. You were 200-percent correct on both selections. They have the most incredible Caesar salad I've ever eaten. I added chicken to it and it was an outstanding lunch - priced right too! How do they do it? I live in California - thank goodness the restaurant is there [in Maui] and not here. I would eat there all the time and gain so much weight. Once again, thank you for the outstanding recommendations. - Dave Whiteman
THE LOWDOWN ON HOLTER AND SMITH Lance Holter's nomination to the Maui Board of Variances and Appeals was temporarily halted when Michele Chouteau, an employee of Kent Smith, made charges to Councilwoman Charmaine Tavares that Lance had done things warranting disapproval. Councilwoman Tavares properly asked to have time to investigate these charges and had to, therefore, deny approval. The Mayor re-nominated Lance with a letter to the Council saying the charges were investigated and proven to be unfounded. Joanne Johnson said that Kent’s character and county liability concerns her. Kent plead no contest to assault and harassment
NO LOVE FOR LIBERALS In response to Sanchia Foiles "Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire" [Letters to the Editor – June 5 issue], check your history book. Richard Nixon was not impeached. Funny how you mention Nixon and overlook Bill Clinton, who was impeached, and who placed his hand on The Bible and knowingly lied to the American public. Thus, I believe we are dealing more with an anti-President Bush matter than with an anti-war matter. How the liberals love jumping on board the "Bush is a Liar" platform. This blind, liberal hatred and media rhetoric is getting tiring. - Shelly Currier, via email

ehbrah@mauitime.com Eh Beach Thief We left our beach essentials unattended for two minutes while we went to enjoy the water. That’s what you’re suposed to do at the beach, right? Wrong. This was your chance to strike. You nabbed our belongings, things that we have accumulated over the years, things we love and that have meaning to us. That stuff won't make you happy. You want to know what really bums me out about the whole thing? Not that I don’t have my favorite sunglasses anymore; they’re just overpriced plastic. It’s that if you would have asked us for help, we would have done everything within our power to accomodate. But now, no. You have jaded another caring individual who is, or was, concerned with helping people, even strangers. Now, I’m glad you have to struggle to survive. I’m glad that you don’t have any money. I hope every day sucks for you. In the time between now and your inevitable next arrest, we wish you all the best and may the sunglasses you steal be scratched, the credit cards you take be maxed and the watches you lift be worthless. - Hapless beach theft victim

COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time.
THE AKAKA BILL 1. Please explain your understanding of the Akaka Bill. 2. What is your definition of a Native Hawaiian? 3. Do you feel that the United States owes some sort of reparations to the Kingdom of Hawaii? 4. If the measure passes, how do you think the government of the Kingdom of Hawaii should be structured? 5. Are the Akaka Bill's efforts to protect racially exclusionary entitlements a form of reverse racism?
TRUSTEE BOYD MOSSMAN Maui Representative, Office of Hawaiian Affairs 1. Well, the Akaka Bill provides Hawaiians with recognition but more importantly self-determination, which they do not have, number one. Number two, that in turn, will allow for the preservation of current benefits and entitlements that the Hawaiian people receive today from the federal and state government. Number three, without the Akaka Bill, the likelihood of preserving the Hawaiian culture, because of the court cases, is questionable. 2. If you're asking my personal definition, it is anybody with any amount of Hawaiian blood. The legal definition is a little different. 3. Um…no. (Why not?) I think time and history have provided the Hawaiian people with an opportunity not to get everything they used to have back 100percent but to maintain the benefits of being American as well as Hawaiian with the ability to govern themselves. 4. Monarchy…no, democracy yes, within the Constitution of the United States. 5. It is not racism. It's a political issue that has never been resolved and it's about time it be resolved.
CRYSTAL ALBORO Local Resident 1. I think what Senator Akaka is trying to do is get Native Hawaiian rights recognized similar to what has happened with the Native Americans. The exact way of how they're going about doing that, I'm not quite sure.

2. A Native Hawaiian would definitely have to be someone that's related or was born of an indigenous people that occupied the Kingdom of Hawaii. Also, heirs of John Young (missionary who came over and befriended King Kamehameha) to me would be considered Native Hawaiian because "Hawaiian" is not a Hawaiian term. 3. Well, we already have the apology in public law but I'm not a firm believer in reparations. I know the Japanese received reparations for Pearl Harbor/Hiroshima but I don't think monetary reparation is a solution. I don't think reparation is a good word but maybe a return of specific lands. 4. There is a structure in place and recognized at an international level, based right here on Maui in Haiku under the Kingdom of Hawaii. (Does that still have blood ties to the monarchy?) I don’t think it is monarchial. It's more parliament; they have governors, they have ministers. 5. It's not race based. I think it's more nationality based. I think people are twisting it to make it look racist but if we stick to the nationality, I think that's what it needs to be more akin to. Less race, more nationality.
HIS ROYAL MAJESTY AKAHI NUI Sovereign Heir of the Kingdom of Hawaii 1. I read in the Maui News about how the Native Hawaiians like the Akaka Bill but I myself have never given the authority to go and speak of my thinking about the Akaka Bill. I think the Akaka Bill is a fraud. What they want, is to change our identity. What gives them the right to do that? 2. Oh, Na Kanaka Maoli. Native Hawaiian are those that were born in Hawaii. We are Na Kanaka Maoli (true and aboriginal, indigenous people of the Kingdom of Hawaii). 3. Yes, I do. (Is the apology that President Clinton issued in 1993 a suitable apology?) I don't think so. 4. His Royal Majesty's secretary speaking: (we had a bit of a language barrier) They are trying to set up some sort of government but, from reading the bill, that government is directly under the Department of the Interior. It's not a sovereign government. That bill is the death of sovereignty. He will never be underneath the Department of the Interior. Any negotiations with the United States would have to be between the president and His Royal Majesty on equal terms. 5. No. His Royal Majesty's secretary speaking: It robs us of our identity by changing it to “Native Hawaiian”. (So it's not a race issue but more identity?) Right.

CAN'T POSSIBLY BE TRUE
Several news organizations have recently profiled 70-year-old Charlotte Chambers, who is a reserve defensive back for the Orlando Starz of the Independent Women's (tackle) Football League. Said the Starz' chief executive: "Last year, I thought I should tell the other teams to go easy and not hit her too hard. But now I'm afraid she's going to hurt somebody." Said the 5-foot-4, 140-pound Chambers: "I say, 'You better hit me (first), because I'm laying you out.'"
The Florida Legislature finally amended its open-government law in May to prohibit sexcrime inmates from getting access to photographs of their victims. Under the previous version of the law, a state appeals court had ruled that convicted sex-assaulter Dale W. Weeks was entitled, under the liberal public-records procedures, to investigative photos that depicted his victim's genitals.
A joint resolution commissioning a statue to recognize the anti-abortion movement in South Carolina is currently making its way through the state House of Representatives. In the original proposal in circulation until May, the statue that sponsors thought would best celebrate unborn children was to be a huge (6-foottall) fetus. (Some supporters have suggested an alternative design.)

RECENT ALARMING HEADLINES (1) "From Hyenas' Privates, a Potential Public Good" (a May Contra Costa Times report on how both male and female hormones flow through hyenas' genitals, in part shaping them, which scientists say offers clues in how to treat potentially hermaphroditic humans). (2) "Psychologists Dissect the Multiple Meanings of Meow" (a May Cox News Service report on how cats may display many alterations of their standard vocalization depending on why at that time they want humans' attention). THE VIRTUES OF PATIENCE Recently, police, faced with thieves whom they suspected had swallowed their contraband in order to avoid detection, had to wait and let nature take its course in order to recover the incriminating evidence. Carpet cleaner Daniel Dyament, 19, finally expelled (after 72 hours) the $3,000 ring he allegedly stole from a customer's home in Bloomfield Township, Mich. (June). And in March, Chicago police reportedly used White Castle "sliders" to coax suspect Peter J. Mannix to yield (after 96 hours) a stolen $37,000 diamond. But in Santa Cruz, Calif., jeweler Joy Kilner concluded in June after days of waiting that the $1,800 diamond that her pet basset hound swallowed was not coming out and was probably stuck in the dog's intestines.
YEAR OF THE COCKROACH In May, Reuters reported on the increasing popularity in Australia of large cockroaches as pets (won't hurt children, very low maintenance). However, at about the same time, health authorities in Thailand decided to confiscate and destroy about 1,000 pet cockroaches, calling them pests, but reluctantly showed sympathy for the owners' losses by holding a Buddhist funeral rite for the cockroaches. And a few days before that, artist Catherine Chalmers opened her "Executions" exhibit in New York City, featuring photographs of cockroaches dying simulated "human" deaths (hanging from tiny nooses or executed in a small prison electric chair) and, in a video, arising from the "dead" in a gas chamber (gruesomely knocked out by carbon dioxide, then revived as the gas dissipates).
OPED
BY TED RALL
Bush's Willing Executioners America Betrayed by Cowardly Citizens Today's version of the heroic Nathan Hale would fall to his knees, beg for mercy, and swear fealty to the British crown. A 21st century Patrick Henry would no doubt argue that homeland security trumps personal liberty. Benedict Arnold would make the rounds of the TV talk shows, lauded as an "heroic pragmatist." In a land of wimps, the dimwit is king--such is the dismal state of post-9/11 America. As George W. Bush's aristocorporate junta runs roughshod over hard-earned freedoms, as his lunatic-right Administration loots $10 trillion from the national treasury, as his armies invade sovereign nations without cause, as he threatens war against imagined enemies while allowing real ones to build nuclear weapons, those charged with standing against these perversions of American values remain appallingly, inexplicably silent. We have become a nation of cowards, and I am ashamed. Where are the Democrats? Under our two-party system it is their patriotic duty to represent the opinions and beliefs of their constituents, who are mostly liberal. That responsibility becomes an urgent necessity when the GOP, in firm control of all three branches of government, abandons a proud tradition of conservatism in favor of outright fascism. With the exception of a few principled men like Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), leading Democrats have made little or no effort to stymie Bush's agenda, launch a real investigation of 9/11 or appoint a special prosecutor to
go after the WMD scandal. To their eternal dishonor 82 Democratic Congressmen and 29 Senators voted for the invasion of Iraq--this despite the pleas of millions of demonstrators. Among the nine leading contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination, only two have made opposition to runaway militarism a staple of their stump speech. Easily spooked and even more easily fooled, Democratic leaders are neither leading nor acting like Democrats. Thirty years of
where are the principled Republicans? Not long ago, conservative leaders trudged down from Capitol Hill to tell an embattled Richard Nixon that he could no longer count on their support. Now the moderate, fiscally responsible Republicans one might expect to stand up to Bush's fiscal depredations--men like John McCain, Bob Dole and George Pataki--remain mute as their party and nation are hijacked by fanatics. Bush's rich man's welfare will cost the aver-
IN A LAND OF WIMPS, THE DIMWIT IS KING–SUCH IS THE DISMAL STATE OF POST-9/11 AMERICA. political duck-and-cover has brought them to the brink of irrelevance. Far more damning, they have abandoned their rightful role as loyal opponents. Where is the left? The radical theoreticians who provided the intellectual rationale for opposition to the Vietnam War--Ralph Nader, Noam Chomsky, et al--are touring the nation's universities, each pushing books and promoting their personal "brand" to youthful idealists. Former leftist Christopher Hitchens, who so desperately wanted to fit into the new paradigm that he endorsed attacking Iraq, has been reduced to insisting that weapons of mass destruction will turn up someday. Probably. Unlike Saddam, Bush needn't cut out his opponents' tongues. They're keeping silent on their own. It may be naïve to pose the question, but
age U.S. citizen $500,000 over the next decade--isn't that the kind of government waste Republicans are supposed to deplore? Partisan politics are so dead that the American resistance is entrusted by default into the unlikely hands of the same intelligence establishment that poisoned Fidel's cigars. Every day brings startling revelations from angry CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency spymasters: despite what Bush said over and over again, there was never any proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, the trailers Bush claimed were mobile chemical weapons labs were no such thing, and Colin Powell presented, in the UN, evidence on Iraq that he privately considered doctored and unreliable. The recent DIA leak of a November 2002 analysis shows that intelligence experts believed that Saddam

Hussein would never use WMDs--even if he had them--unless "regime survival was imminently threatened." The Iraqis would use them only "in extreme circumstances," the report said, "because their use would confirm Iraq's evasion of UN restrictions." Where is the outrage? Even though it's painfully clear that Bush lied about the WMDs, even though daily ambushes of American troops indicate that the war is far from over, a CBS News poll shows that 62 percent of Americans still support Bush's con job on Iraq. "The president is 99 percent safe on this one," says Newt Gingrich. Protestors who demonstrated against the war before it began ought to be energized by the WMD scandal, but the streets of Washington are quiet. Editors who parroted the Administration's lies, given the chance to redeem themselves now, downplay the latest Slaughtergate news. An army colonel e-mails, urging me to keep asking questions, yet confesses, "I'm keeping my thoughts to myself and waiting until I retire to get the hell out of here." Daniel Goldhagen's controversial 1996 book "Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust" pointed out an obvious truth: that the Nazis could never have triumphed, retained power or gotten anything done without the explicit complicity of the people they ruled. Therefore, Goldhagen argued--and thoughtful people agree--the failure of the German people to resist Hitler made them just as guilty as he was. How will history judge us? (Ted Rall is the author of "Gas War: The Truth Behind the American Occupation of Afghanistan," an analysis of the underreported Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline project and the real motivations behind the war on terrorism. Over four hundred racers plunged into the water in front of the Maui Prince Hotel to begin the third annual King’s Trail Triathlon. The race began with a 1500-meter ocean swim, the men starting first, with the female racers just five minutes behind them. After the ocean swim, the athletes headed up into the grass for a quick change from swim gear into cycling attire. They grabbed their bikes and took off to the south, to follow the path of the ancient trail used by Maui’s ali’i to wander the coastline. Last year’s three loop bike course was changed into a two loop affair that used golf cart paths for part of the course to help minimize the race’s effect on traffic in the area. The new course did cause some minor foul ups with some of the racers but overall, the new course was praised for its challenging climbs mixed with rolling hills. The pre-race favorites, Lahaina’s Jeff Sanders and the Big Island’s Ralph Sawyer were joined by Kihei resident Allister Knox as the first male racers to complete the nearly 25-mile bike leg. Meanwhile, Deirdre Tennant of Kihei opened up a gap on the rest of the women’s field at the start of the 10-kilometer run, the final leg of the race. After venturing down into the heat of the lava flow of Cape Kinau, the racers sped back to the finish line at the Maui Prince. Crossing the finish line first for the men was Knox in two hours, nine minutes and 30 seconds, followed just 26 seconds later by Sanders. Tennant, leading the rest of the women’s field by a whopping 14 minutes, won the women’s race.
Racers as young as 15 and as old as 61 continued to trickle in over the next few hours. The race brought athletes from various islands to the shores of South Maui along with over 200 participants from the mainland. After recovering in the shade and getting a massage, the athletes enjoyed a post-race luau, followed by the awards ceremony. The King’s Trail Triathlon is put on by the Maui Multi Sports Club and the race proceeds support a number of local charities and groups including Maui Tobacco Free Partnership, South Side Boxing and several local canoe clubs. Hawaii Masters The Kihei Aquatic Center is rapidly creating a name for itself as the top competitive swimming facility in the Hawaiian Islands. The pool has hosted the Western Zone Swimming Championships, the Maui Interscholastic League Championships and the Hawaii State Long Course Swimming Championships; all prestigious, high profile events. The Hawaii Masters Swimming Organization is bringing the Hawaii International Swim Meet to Kihei. The pool events will be June 27-28, with an open water swim at Kamaole Beach Park to close the event on June 29. Masters swimmers are those swimmers ages 19 and up that compete within different age categories, each of which has its own set of world and national records.
This meet caters to the international crowd as it will use the 25-meter course, a rarity in the United States. The course has attracted swimmers from Japan, New Zealand and Australia to compete with swimmers from throughout Hawaii and the mainland. “The Japanese contingent is smaller than originally anticipated,” Meet Director and Valley Isle Masters Coach Janet Renner said. “They are being cautious about traveling because of the fear of SARS.” But with Maui’s wonderful climate and the absence of SARS cases here, the overall turnout is expected to be good. This is only the first year for the event and it will only grow over time. MTW For more information on the event or masters swimming visit: www.hawaiimastersswim.org

The 2003 Regatta Season Maui paddlers go all out The sun is shining, a clear Iao Valley dominates the landscape and the harbor is calm and blue. Impressive outrigger canoes line the beach and loads of people are moving around, generating an excited buzz. Even the rooftop of Hawaiian Canoe Club’s hale is packed with spectators and participants. Most clubs are mainly made up of young people, so youthful exuberance dominates. There is an obviously deep camaraderie that exists between all the members of a canoe club from the youngest to the oldest. Their Hawaiian chants electrify the crowd and their teammates and collaboration is evident in all that they do, whether in the water or on the beach. On May 31, the 2003 racing season of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association began at Kahului harbor. The Hawaiian Canoe Club hosted the John M. and Kealoha Lake Regatta, which usually ends the season but this year started it due to a vote to rotate the races among the various clubs. This year was also the first time that Kealoha Lake, the matriarch of The Hawaiian Canoe Club, was not present. She passed away in the off-season. Her family began the day with a beautiful ceremony in the harbor to honor her memory and begin the season on a good note. Hawaiian, Hana, Lahaina, Kihei, Kahana, Napili, Wailea, Lae`ula O Kai and Na Kai `Ewalu all come out, geared up to win. The 39 races start early and run late with heats in all of the different age groups and skill levels. Clubs win different races in different categories and points are awarded for first, second and third place. Kihei dethroned the reigning champs, Hawaiian Canoe Club, who had been dominant in this regatta for eleven years but came in second at their own race. "We’ve always had a great relationship with Hawaiian [Canoe Club] and these races, no matter who wins, make all of the Maui clubs stronger when it comes to state competition. It will either effect us by making us over-confident or wake us up to train harder and continue winning,” Maile Arensdorf, Kihei Canoe Club president said. "Our coach, Koviko Williams, deserves a lot of kudos for the fantastic job he did getting our team ready. The majority of us didn’t even know what was happening until the
break, and then we realized that we could win it. We all gathered around to pray and recite our chants on the beach and it helped us to win. At the end, there were still 100 people from the club there, which is the most I’ve ever seen stay. The victory was a spiritual experience and afterward we circled up on the beach to chant and give thanks to Akua." Since the momentous May 31 opener, Hawaiian Canoe Club has usurped its authority by winning at the Wilmington Regatta on June 7, the Kamehameha Day Regatta on June 14 and the Naleieha Hanaka`o`o race on June 21. Kihei Canoe Club has continued to give them a run for their money, coming in second at all of the last three regattas. Wailea Canoe Club placed third on June 7 and June 21 and Kahana Canoe Club took third on June 14. Kihei Canoe Club sponsors the next regatta, Moki Kalanikau, on June 28 at 8 a.m. at Ka Lae Pohaku. A Hawaiian canoe regatta is one of the best ways to connect with the local culture and to experience what Maui is really about. It is a community event and a great chance to interact with diverse people. A regatta is like a microcosm of life on Maui. Each team sets up a tent where their members and fans spend the day having fun. It is interesting to see what the different groups are like. For example, Hana had less people than anyone else, were more laid-back than the others and carried a traditional Hawaiian vibe; Kihei was very flashy and highly organized and Hawaiian Canoe Club manifested the energy and diversity of their home turf, Kahului. Each club has a mission statement that ferments the preservation of Hawaiian culture. The teams take these statements very seriously and apply them in all aspects of life. This is seen in Hawaiian Canoe Club’s popular summer program for kids that teaches the youth about traditional island ways through canoeing and cultural and environmental activities that help them connect with the essence of Maui. "I wanted to participate in something special that was connected with Hawaiian culture, so I got interested in paddling through some friends," rookie Lahaina Canoe Club paddler Sabrina Bernardini said. "I’ve only been practicing for a few weeks but it has already given me a better understanding of Maui and what it is all about. My first race was a little nerveracking but it was a good feeling of accomplishment to be part of a group effort and work together as one solid unit." MTW

No Place To Call Home WILL NEW FACILITY HELP MAUI’S HOMELESS? It was early evening when I got to Lahaina. People were still hustling and bustling down Front Street, high stepping from bar to bar. I decided to take a stroll down the main drag to see how people would react to my dirt-ridden appearance and the rotten stench that followed me. Usually, when I pass people on the street, I smile at them and they smile back. Not the deal here. If I so much as looked at a woman as she strutted passed with her friends, her eyes shot straight down to the ground and she pretended to not have even seen me. It made me feel like I wasn’t even there. I ended up walking behind a woman on her way home. You would have thought I was a rabid mutt trying to chase her down. I’ve never seen somebody change pace the way she did when she saw me cross the street to get behind her. As she sped up, a police cruiser crept up behind me and slowed as it came to the, by this time, half-running girl. She pointed at her car and waved at the cop, as if saying, “I’m almost safe from this creep behind me.” The officer drove off. I felt like a criminal, guilty of being dirty and looking unkempt. There are currently an estimated 1,760 family members or individuals living under the state poverty level on Maui—35 to 40 in Lahaina alone. This number includes the faction of society that lives outdoors, almost like animals, in a world of few rules except to keep quiet and stay out of sight. For one night, to better understand them, I became one of them. I talked with people around town including Victor Bellarosa, executive director of Light Bringers Rescue Mission in Lahaina, to find out the best places for me to go. I left everything at home: my wallet, my cell phone, my watch, my shoes, everything but the clothes on my back and a small blanket. I set out with a 99cent Saver’s shirt, a pair of denim shorts that I should have thrown away years ago and a pair of rubber slippers. I rubbed some dirt into my hands and feet and smeared some on my face. I felt ready. After about two hours walking up and down

Front Street, I was tired, hungry and my feet hurt. All I wanted to do was sleep. I grabbed my blanket and headed off to bed, sort of. I arrived at my sleeping area for the night later than I had intended. It had already been dark for a while and I had no idea where exactly I was. I didn’t know how I had gotten there, I didn’t know what was going on around me. As my eyes darted around, I heard the rustle of others attempting slumber in the muggy night air. From the bodies that I could make out, most everyone’s eyes locked on me as I walked past them. They watched me all the way until I was on the ground, next to a bush with my blanket stretched out over me. I tried to listen for the faintest sounds, the lightest squish of dirt under a foot. I was paranoid, sure somebody would kill me. I remembered reading about a homeless person somewhere on the mainland that had been murdered in his sleep by a group of his fellow less-fortunates. He was killed and left to bake in the sun. I don’t remember if his killers were after his shoes or some alcohol that he had or if he had offended someone during the day that decided to take their revenge that night. I couldn’t think about anything else. All I knew was that I was somewhere in a cane field with people I didn’t know and that I was supposed to be able to sleep now. The homeless do it every night. I can’t imagine what it would be like to feel like that every time I tried to get some sleep. As I lay there, I was glad it was quiet. I was especially glad nobody was talking to me. Except for the occasional gurgle of someone clearing his throat, it was pretty still. I got up at one point to resituate myself and heard numerous heads turn and assess my movement. It seemed as though they were keeping an eye on me. I was pretty sure that was a good thing. I started to doze off but found that every time my eyes closed, I would subconsciously jerk them open and quickly shake my head, stunning myself with an almost painful awakening. I wouldn’t let myself go to sleep. When I did fall
Of course, it doesn’t have to be like this. There’s a new facility opening up… October 31, 2003 is the tentative opening date for the $3.5 million Ka Hale A Ke Ola West Maui Homeless Resource Center. Phase I of the development will consist of 26 apartments followed by another 52 units in phase II. There will also be administrative space, counseling areas and dining facilities. Originally designed to accommodate approximately 50 individuals, the current project may end up being about half the size of the existing resource center in Wailuku, which can house approximately 235 individuals. “If they set it up like [Wailuku], I think it will be a good thing for the community,” said Kevin T. Nagasaki, administrator of the Lahiaina Outpost of Salvation Army. “But my only concern would be that they don’t, from what I’ve heard, have a great detox program.” The absence of that one key element may be the biggest shortcoming for the new facility. Without the presence of some sort of rehabilitation program, the center might leave many of the individuals it set out to help still looking for a housing option. “You’ve got to be clean and sober, that’s first and foremost,” Ka Hale A Ke Ola Resource Center Homeless Services Coordinator Mike Davis said. “It’s not really a detox program but if you’re unsheltered, and clean and sober, they’ll accept you. If you have been on drugs, you’ve got

to go through an assessment or evaluation. There’s a policy that there’s no drugs and it’s clean and sober on property and you’ve got to go through the chemical dependency programs.” Bellarosa’s concerns model those of Nagasaki and he worries that an entire faction of the homeless population has different and unique circumstances that the center will not address. “It’s going to help some of the people but not all,” Bellarosa said. “There are going to be those who don’t qualify. If you get caught with the smell of booze on your breath, you’re out. There’s hardly anybody dealing with the hardcore homeless anymore.” Light Bringers, the non-profit organization that Bellarosa has been involved with for close to a decade, used to feed close to eighty people from their old location on Front Street until complications forced them to close that site. Now Bellarosa wants a more inclusive facility that would accommodate all homeless people, including the so-called “hardcore homeless”—drug addicts, some mentally ill individuals and heavy alcohol abusers. That being said, the main beneficiaries from this project will be the families that don’t have anywhere to go. “There are people who are homeless and they were homeless before we were even born,” Nagasaki said. “That’s their lifestyle; they don’t want to be indoors. I think the people that will benefit from it the most will be the families.” According to Davis, most of the people that he has talked to of those who show up every morning at Salvation Army are anxious to get into the new facility. People who have lived outside and slept in the bushes for years “are just waiting for it to open,” Davis said. So where does this leave us? The new facility is a catalyst for creating change in the homeless situation and how Maui is dealing with it. But with the concerns and possible missing elements, who knows if the center will have the impact that it could. What I do know is that sleeping in the dirt sucks. It sucks. There is no better was to describe

asleep for longer than a blink, I would wake up at the sound of a leaf hitting the dirt. My back hurt from the uneven ground beneath me. My head hurt from the frequent gyrations that my brain seemed to initiate every time I nodded off. It was a horrible feeling both physically and mentally. I felt beaten down and tired while at the same time I was thinking that I had to stay awake to protect myself from…something. It was like fighting a battle within myself; part of me wanted to sleep while part of me clung desperately to remaining conscious. It was horrible.
Necessity will always prevail it. Having that angst in the back of my mind every time I tried to get some sleep would send me into a state of complete insanity and would really force me to reconsider my life. The new facility is an enormous step up from shacking up under a bush. Having walls around you, a roof above you and a bed beneath you might almost make not having a home bearable. Before the sun came up, I sat up to leave. Several sleepers turned to watch me go, still unsure of my intentions and apparently still uncomfortable with me being there. The bodies on the ground looked dirty, very dirty. Dirt, actual earth, was all around them and it made its way onto them, onto every inch of them. The men’s faces looked rough and dangerously sharp from not having been shaved in a long time. Their hair was sun bleached and their skin looked like dark brown leather. Their tired eyes looked back at me as they got ready to face another day in the sweltering heat. Their belongings were on the ground around them. What I assume was all one man had fit in an area about the size of a small bathroom. Cardboard and plastic bags were a common sight. A stereotypical association but this time, it was a reality. I

couldn’t see what was in the bags but I can’t imagine that it was much. You could tell the difference between their clothes and mine. Their clothes were fading from being subjected to all of the sun’s intensity, day after day. They had dirt ground into them. Their clothes were dirty from experience, not from having handfuls of dirt rubbed onto them. It seemed as though the dirt was a part of their clothes now, like it would be there forever. They looked worn, and baked, and rough, and well, homeless. As hard as it was, I tried not to stare or look for too long at any one person. I tried to keep my eyes to myself as I passed by their “bedrooms” but I couldn’t. I didn’t want to look too curious and be too invasive but I was. I would feel pretty uncomfortable if somebody watched me wake up in the morning, if a stranger was in front of me when I opened my eyes. If he was gawking at me and everything I own while passing by, kicking up dirt as he went, I would be downright angry. It’s a pretty surreal image but as curious as I was, I had to remember that this was only an experience for me; but to them, out in the fields and on the street, this is real life. And real life sucks. MTW

Poodle skirts, leather jackets optional The fifties was a decade marked with growth and power, filled with baby boomers and fueled by the victory of WWII. The automobile is remembered as the hallmark of the fifties but so is another classic fifties fixture: the diner. Amid burgers, fries, shakes, cherry cokes, the jukebox, and bobby socks, a high point in American cuisine was established that remains replicated to this day. Our most recent tribute to these fabulous fifties eateries is seen in the Cool Cat Café located at the Wharf Center in Lahaina. Loaded with memorabilia, the walls give you a quick lesson in fifties pop culture, entertainment and music. Their menu is a who’s who of burgers, plus veggie, chicken and other sandwiches, salads, hot dogs and a fountain full of shakes, malts, sodas and sundaes. My first visit to Cool Cat found me hankering for a BLT which came on grilled sourdough, with crisp bacon and lettuce with juicy ripe tomato, and a healthy portion of mayo. The French fries were terrific, homemade on the premises and full of flavor. I was just getting warmed up to the Cool Cat. My next visit I went in for the veggie burger cleverly named the Jack La Lanne, while my friend had the Leader of the Pack, your usual mouthwatering giant burger. Since I was being healthy with the no meat selection, I added some onion rings to make up for lost beef calories and it was a choice well made. The veggie and the burger come with the works - lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions and dressings - so all you need is a big appetite. The portions and the freshness of the extras impressed me, so I decided I would be back again to conquer another item on the menu. I was back before I could say baby boomer, but this time to try out their Happy Hour with a live Trevor Jones appearance. While Trevor kept the fifties hits a comin’, my Cool Cat date and I indulged in $2 domestics and an unreal view of Front Street and Banyan Tree Park. Fun like this can’t last forever and that’s why they call it happy hour and not happy day. We wrapped it up and promised to come back another time. I dropped in again, this time not to experience the views of Front St. but to treat myself to the cool side of Cool Cat Café: their interior dining area has air conditioning that rocks! conditioned restaurant in Lahaina is a bigger challenge than you would think when you’re not considering fast food. This is the land of open air dining which loses its appeal in 90-degree weather. I used this opportunity to order a house salad and a shake with my Patsy Klein, a grilled sourdough sandwich with melted jack cheese and Ortega chiles served with the works. I brushed up on a little ‘50s history while I waited for my order with the framed front page of the LA Examiner dated 10/1/55 exposing the horrific details of the car crash that claimed James Dean’s life. I pondered the fact that James Dean’s Porsche was bought for $7000, then took his life soon after, while I worked on my first course. The salad was excellent; a large bowl of fresh mixed greens
with dressing tossed throughout with ripe tomato chunks and sliced cucumbers. The strawberry shake was just the thing to cleanse my palate before the sandwich. They did it right with chunks of strawberry, a tall fountain glass full of shake, plus the metal shake carafe for consuming every luscious drop. But when that Patsy Klein was plopped down in front of me everything stopped for a moment and it was all about flavor. I had no idea an Ortega chile sandwich could rock my taste buds but it was a great little secret they let me in on. So you must be wondering how a not so little local girl like me can afford to eat so much Cool Cat grub. Well, they sure make it easier on me with their 20% off for Kama’aina, plus they have great coupons out there too! They also have great daily specials like ribs and ribeye. Rockabilly wannabes like me can check out Cool Cat Café at the Wharf Cinema Center seven days a week serving lunch and dinner, with more info available at www.coolcatcafe.com <http://www.coolcatcafe.com/>. Their happy hour is from 3 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight and features $2 domestics and $2.50 well drinks. You can catch Trevor Jones there on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 2 p.m. Poodle skirts and leather jackets are optional, and they supply the hulahoops free of charge. MTW

Selvapiana•Bucerchiale 1999 Chianti Rufina, Italy $35.99 Selvapiana is an Italian estate located in Rufina, the northeastern corner of Tuscany. Since its purchase by Michele Giuntini Selvapiana in 1827, five generations of the family line have lived and worked on the land. Italian agricultural estates are typically massive. This is no exception. Selvapiana spreads out over 600 acres: 100 acres devoted to grapevines and the rest, olive orchards. It's a dedicated winery that makes one of the best wines in all of Rufina. Bucerchiale is a single vineyard wine that has been rated among the top 100 wines by Wine Spectator. It is made up of 100-percent Sangiovese and is aged in oak for 15 months before it is bottled. This is a wine that's made to age. Still tucked away in the cellars of the estate, and currently aging to perfection, are the 1947 and ‘48 vintages. A true example of authentic Sangiovese, this wine has aromas of rich, dark berry fruit. On the palate, the fruits explode and the solid tannins will put some hair on the chest. The finish thins out with some spicy, earthy notes. You can enjoy Bucerchiale now or you may decide to lay this wine down for a few years as it is still tightly wound. Enjoy!

More Than Just Desserts Maui Humane Society Fundraiser If you’re looking for a great excuse to spend an evening sampling decadent treats and sipping champagne in beautiful Wailea, the Maui Humane Society is holding their annual “More Than Just Desserts” event on June 28 at the Maui Prince Hotel Ballroom. With talented chefs from some of Maui’s top restaurants competing to present one-of-a-kind culinary confections, this year’s event promises something for every sweet tooth. Also featured are the live and silent auctions and a special guest performance by Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Uluwehi Guerrero. Best of all, it’s for a good cause. All proceeds will benefit Maui’s orphaned animals and help to support the Humane Society’s community based programs and projects. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for a little guilt-free overindulgence. Get ready for a taste of Tropical Temptation, find out who’s been Naughty N’ Nice and take a Chocolate Fantasy Ride as each restaurant offers their own unique twist on the category themes. His trademark hula style has been dubbed “uniquely Uluwehi” - sophisticated and elegant. Relax and enjoy the soothing sounds of this versatile and spirited artist. More Than Just Desserts is a fun-filled way to give much needed community support and recognition to our Maui Humane Society for the services they offer. Funding allows them to continue their work caring for animals, responding to calls, running the spay and neuter program and educating through the schools. Private donations comprise a major portion of their revenue and this event will be their biggest fundraiser of the year. Estimated attendance is 300 and dress will range from casual aloha wear to tuxedos and gowns. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased through the Humane Society. Call 877-3680 for more information. MTW

Infection Zombies Rage In Trainspotting Director's Breakneck Horrorshow 28 Days Later (★★★) Horror movie fans will finally have something to coo about again with director Danny Boyle's post-apocalyptic "28 Days Later." A deadly blood-transmitted virus (called "RAGE") has emptied London of its inhabitants when former bicycle messenger Jim (Cillian Murphy - "Disco Pigs") awakens in a hospital bed from a coma to join up with a few other uninfected survivors in escaping the zombie-like corrupted inhabitants who pursue them. This "Dawn of the Dead" inspired chiller is strong on concept, style and brutally violent action, but suffers from poor musical scoring, and a digital video format that helped keep its budget at 10 million dollars. The movie's inappropriately cheery ending also weakens its overall impact. "28 Days Later" doesn't compare to such milestone horror thrillers as "Seven" or "The Vanishing" (the original Dutch version), but it is still the best nerve shocker to come around since "The Blair Witch Project." Lab chimps infected with a psychotic rage-inducing virus are set free by animalrights activists at the start of "28 Days Later" in a tour de force initiation of blood that sets the film's relentless pace. Glaring animal teeth ferociously inject the poisonous toxin into their liberators' flesh with horrific speed before the film shifts to a time 28 days later, when the virulent microbe has gestated inside its victims' bodies. Omega man Jim hardly seems equipped for the dangers in store when he awakens with a partially shaved head, still fresh with sutures, and intravenous needles stuck in his arms. Jim anxiously explores London's deserted streets where wads of unusable cash blow around, and a roundabout kiosk at Piccadilly Circus is papered with hand-written missing persons flyers and evacuation notices. The camera hones in on a snapshot of a missing girl, concluding the film's first act with a personalized image of loss that sends corporeal chills down your spine. It's a moment that signals a weighty glimpse into the reality of inevitable pandemic pestilence. After a jarring visit to a corpse littered church where not all cadavers are created dead, Jim meets up with fellow survivors Selina (Naomie Harris) and Mark (Noah Huntley). Tough chic Selina gives Jim a crash course in the pressing demand for survival killing instincts when a visit to Jim's parent's home attracts the vicious attention of doomed infected humans incapable of feeding themselves because of their singular obsession with killing. Father and daughter survivors Frank (Brendan Gleeson - "The General") and Hannah (Megan Burns - "Liam") team up to
drive the group in Frank's cab towards Manchester, where radio broadcasts promise an 'answer' to the infection by army personnel. But salvation from obliteration is not sold as advertised, and our diminishing group is forced to take up arms against their military 'rescuers' and the ever encroaching infected who constantly appear to wreck bloody havoc. Christopher Eccleston ("Shallow Grave") is remarkable as Major Henry West, an amoral army commander with his own twisted agenda for subsistence. The main problem with "28 Days Later" is Director of Photography Anthony Dod Mantle's all-consuming use of digital video (DV). Having worked on such DV shot films as "Festen" (AKA "The Celebration" - Thomas Vinterberg) and "Julien Donkey-Boy" (Harmony Korine) Mantle is a respected cameraman for the digital format but still doesn't know how to light the frame. Where Lars Von Trier's digitally shot "Braking the Waves" (Director of Photography Robby Muller) suffered from terminal 'shaky camera,' it at least had necessary lighting to compensate for digital video's flattening visual effect. Digital video technology is still not ready for big screen consumption, but Boyle could possibly have mitigated his budgetary restraints by blending DV with 16 MM to emphasize, and break up, visual aspects of the narrative. Digital video has a fatiguing effect on an audience that celluloid never troubles. Apart from the audience assaulting shaky handheld camera work that DV cameras inure, its degraded imagery constantly takes you out of the cinematic experience. While DV's spastic griminess inflects "28 Days Later" with appropriately out-of-control violence in its action sequences, the total effect is arduous and superfluous. That being said, if you're a horror movie buff, you'll probably still want to see this movie twice. MTW

Summer Madness Zero Tolerance (pictured below), Khrinj & Sausage Act 10 p.m. Thursday (TONIGHT!) @ Maui Brews Kinda can’t wait for tonight’s musical rockfest “Summer Madness” to happen. Kinda excited about the buzz around the island - that people are so pumped up to see these totally awesome hard rock bands rage. Kinda bummed that this evening will be so fun ‘cause I just know it’s going to end too quickly. And that sucks. I’m already thinking about Summer Madness II - the sequel. Rrrrrrock on! Doors open at 9 p.m.
National HIV Testing Day Free, anonymous and confidential testing Friday, Islandwide This is more than important. There are so many people on the island that have no idea they are infected with a sexually transmitted disease simply because they have never been tested. Among these diseases, of course, is HIV and on an island as small as Maui, a disease like HIV can start to eat away at the population before anyone even knows it’s a problem. This is an opportunity for you to make sure that you are not infected and, unknowingly, putting others at risk. (IAN HOUSTON) Testing sites – Wailuku: Wailuku Health Center - 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Maui AIDS Foundation Office - 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. CHAMP Clinic (Wailuku Industrial Park) - 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Lahaina: Lahaina Health Center - 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kihei: Keolahou Church - 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hali’imaile: Anex (Gym) - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

REEFers Unite 5:30pm Monday @ Maui Ocean Center The Reef Environmental Education Foundation and Project S.E.A.-Link is conducting a free fish ID seminar, which means you get to learn the names of Hawaii’s fishes and REEF gets a new slave - er, volunteer diver! Actually, the idea is to identify and document fish diversity and population trends in order to educate and inform researchers and the general public about the natural wonders of the undersea world. The ocean is tragically underrated as a vital resource, and knowing “what’s down there” is half the battle! While counting fish may not initially seem like the most exciting venture, sometimes giving your snorkel or scuba trip a special focus opens your underwater experience into a whole new world of discovery. And you won’t just be a bloated blob beneath the surface - you’ll be saving the planet, one bubble (or fish!) at a time.
Colin John Band Saturday @ Casanova, Sunday @ Charley’s, Monday @ Hapa’s, Tuesday & Wednesday @ Stella Blues This is some down-home, feel-good, bar blues meant to be enjoyed with old friends while you make new ones dancing and drinking the night away. Apparently, the Colin John Band stole the show last time they played in Maui opening for blues legend John Mayall. And they’re back to do it again all over the island - go enjoy yourself!

POWERMAN 5000 "TRANSFORM" There's an odd twinkle of satisfaction in hearing an ostensibly metal band churn out what can only be referred to as a disco song. I do enjoy how brave this band is in their contribution to otherwise lackluster metal, in terms of them and the rest of the new breed of "metalists". This record in particular gleans much from Brother Zombie (as in Rob Zombie, try to keep up) on the first listen but you not only come to recognize but also appreciate how melodic this record is as it goes along. Powerman 5000 and its brethren in metal may never become my cup of tea but the only thing I'm disappointed about is that the song "That's Entertainment" isn't a cover. -Dreamworks

"YEAR OF THE SPIDER" I'm left weighing what genre Cold should fall into and nothing quite tips the scales here. This can be a welcome thing in any form of creativity if done right. For instance, you couldn't call this "New Metal" due to the fact that it isn't as disposable as most bands from that ilk. For that matter, you couldn't call it metal- period - because you have no shredding guitars, break-neck-fast drums or guttural undecipherable vocals. Cold is in the same league as Godsmack or Staind with mid-paced, heavy-ass rock n' roll with a taste for Rock ballads. When it's all said and done, however, who else can write the perfect rock/metal ballad after Metallica or the sorely missed Guns N' Roses? -Geffen Records
SILVERSTEIN "WHEN BROKEN IS EASILY FIXED" You know, this year I'll be turning a quarter of a century old and I'm so completely irritated that I can already be found saying: "I don't know how you kids can listen to this crap!" Sorry, but I fail to see value in thirty bands that sound exactly like a band that surfaced only last year or in some cases, a few months ago. Silverstein falls into that trap, more of that hardcore/emo crap. For all the feeling these guys try to convey in their songwriting they fail to stir up any real sense of urgency, ingenuity or convincing energy. It’s as if they play off the same rulebook as all the other bands with similar stylings. Sure, not so long ago everyone was after a different sound but at the very least it was upbeat and not nearly as self-indulgent as this garbage. You should be able to put five of your CDs in a stereo and be able to unequivocally say that they're all different. -Victory Records
METALLICA "ST. ANGER" I'm in the same boat as a lot of you out there, I'm sure, when I say that I really wanted to see these guys totally redeem themselves after two abysmal records. The verdict: I'm not sure. To put it boldly, they have rekindled some of their magic but not all the way as some would hope. We all know the likelihood of Metallica putting out another "Ride the Lightning" or even "The Black Album" was a tall order but this is still Metallica trying to progress and not piss off fans along the way. Not only that, the sound of this album is a huge step away from past records, it sounds echoey or garagey. Like if you were listening to them in a garbage can. A change like this is rather abrupt, especially for a band trying to reclaim their past glory in a sea of new exciting music and in the wake of an even shorter attention span audience. However, they do bring a lot of the elements from all their records to the table so fans new and old will hear all the things they used to love about Metallica but they just might not like how interspersed it is this time out. -Elektra

"VANS WARPED TOUR 2003" The self-proclaimed soundtrack to the Warped Tour. I love that these come out actually because the label-specific compilations focus on their own bands which ultimately sound the same or at least have a common bond between them and the Warped Tour is rather varied in the bands they take on tour. Where else would you find Andrew W.K. and The Casualties in the same place? There are lot of throwaway bands on the record but with two discs worth of music and a bunch of unreleased stuff it's worth the price of admission. Standouts include: The Mad Caddies, The Suicide Machines and the up-and-coming None More Black. -Side One Dummy

A friend fixed me up with a guy who turned out to be stiff and formal. He's a good person, but he doesn't have that funny bone I crave in a man. That's not just my opinion, either -- our mutual friend later admitted he's "completely serious." He seemed interested post-date. The voice in my head keeps saying, "Forget him, there's no spark." My best friend says "you can't judge someone on the first date." Should I go out with him again if he asks? Debate Clubbed Psychiatry and Movies Of The Week have given hearing voices a really bad name. Think of all the times you should have heard voices -like right before you bought pants that make your butt look as if it should come with a state capitol. The current voice in your head is telling you what you already know -- what you like. Why would you need a second opinion? A second date won't do anybody any favors either -especially not the women out there who are looking for Mr. Serious. In the future, set clear man minimums for friends fixing you up -- like, that the man who's right for you is more likely to wear a frozen turkey as a hat than to be mistaken for one.
PASSION VICTIM What's with women who passionately fling themselves into relationships, and after a breakup, roll up into a cocoon? This woman I broke up with refuses to be friends with me. While we were still speaking, she indicated that she mentally barricades herself from friendly overtures after a relationship. Is there any way to turn her into a friend? Banished Again All you want is a girlfriend who whirs into a frenzy at the push of a button. Push another button and she sits quietly, waiting for you to tell her what to do next. Ever date a blender? Sadly, advances in girlfriends have not kept pace with other advances in technology, such as the invention, by Sony, of a lifelike robot dog. Because girlfriends are not equipped with on-off switches, they often find it impossible to go straight from sucking face to shaking hands. You might ring this woman in six months to see if she's managed to turn her messy emotions into molded plastic. Human women sometimes just need a little time and space. Sometimes no amount of time and space is enough. Deal with it. Eventually, your kind of girlfriend should be available on late-night TV (equipped with The Clapper, if you're lucky). If things work out with the girl-bot, you and she might consider starting a family. Now there's an advance worth waiting for: children who come with mute buttons. Got a problem? Write Amy Alkon, 171 Pier Ave, #280, Santa Monica, CA 90405, or e-mail AdviceAmy@aol.com (www.advicegoddess.com)

ARIES: Old wisdom is the best wisdom. Your dreams are enhanced as the new moon puts you in a more sensitive and intuitive space. Family reunions, domestic issues and scenarios involving your mother are more likely to affect you. TAURUS: Find a way to use your communication skills to make money. Your love of delicious cuisine can get the better of you. Invest some of your cash in savings. Being more aware of your natural surroundings will help you understand local culture. GEMINI: When you've got smarts and good looks it’s easy to get whatever you want. Stabilizing yourself financially is about to get easier. Maturity and patience will pay off. Relocating over the next several months is likely. Plan ahead. CANCER: You wake up from dreams to find yourself ready for a new adventure. Being open-minded is a good thing to practice. Quick judgments may lead to missed opportunities. Celebrate the simple things in life. Sunday features the new moon in Cancer. LEO: Pay the piper, don't pass the buck. Good karma seems to require some sort of sacrifice. Your normally generous nature saves you. Spiritual goals and challenges will be illuminated by the new moon. You have friends in high places. VIRGO: Making the party one to remember will be your job this week. Friends come to your aid when you least expect it. The new moon gives you more excuses to socialize. Career opportunities include creative work, recording, and media blitzing. LIBRA: I see you as a lucky vacationer. Work and play need to mix. I feel you're relaxed enough to accept that truth. Get your play on while other people are working. Get your work on while others are playing. You achieve emotional intelligence. SCORPIO: It's your turn for adventure. All that sex and transformation can wear a body out. You’re ready to learn to play slack key guitar, dance the hula, or experience Tantra. Once you decide to be happy in spite of disappointments, everything you need comes easy. SAGITTARIUS: Immersing yourself in a good time comes naturally to you. Gambling is a vice that you're tempted by and often do well with. Some embarrassing ego crushing moment just can't be avoided. Shrug your shoulders and give thanks it wasn’t worse. CAPRICORN: “Blessed Are the Peacemakers” should be your new slogan. Work on creating justice. You're doing better with your co-workers. Consistent and reliable is the Capricorn way. The new moon highlights harmony, romance and commitment. AQUARIUS: Behold the artist as playboy or playgirl. Behold the scientist getting mad as hell and not taking it anymore. Give your ideas some shocking form of publicity. When it comes to good loving you need to be using both hands among other things. PISCES: You're like the man behind the curtain on the Wizard of Oz. You control inspiration and surprise. Otherwise surprises and inspiration are controlling you. You are very motivated to get whatever you want. Tough love is somehow working. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Susan Hayward 6/30/19, Gil Bellows 6/28/67, Thurgood Marshall 7/2/08 kozmickev@sunset.net
