Ask that Loud Guy at the Bar Dear Loud Guy at the Bar, My husband and I have been happily married for six years, but I’m becoming concerned that he’s having an affair. He’s been more chipper than usual, there are strange numbers on our phone bill, he sometimes comes home with the scent of Paris by Yves Saint Laurent about him (I always wear Revlon’s Ciara Femme Fatale) and on two occasions I came home and found him having sex with a strange woman. I think I should confront him directly, but have no idea how to go about it. Please help. -Suspicious in Seattle

Damn, you look good, man! Come on over and have a drink with us! Come onnnn! Hey, remember the time when you and I went down to Tijuana and ended up hooking up with those two transvestite hookers? What? Oh, I guess it was another guy. It was something, though, I’LL TELLYOU THAT! So how you been, man? Here, let’s have a drink.

Two shots of Jager for me and my friend here! Damn, it’s good to see you! How long’s it been? Two days?! Well, hey buddy, you know me and short term memory! Like that time we got wasted in high school and went out and egged Mr. Stublonski’s house! What a jerk that guy was? DAMN, THAT WAS FUN! Say, where are those shots? Bartender! HEY, BARTENDER! I said two shots of Jager! Dear Loud Guy at the Bar, I’m in the market for a dual stage snowthrower. John Deere makes a couple of good models, but I really can’t decide what’s best for me. I really like the ST 1028 with the 10 horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine and reversible skid shoes, but the less powerful ST 0726 is a bit closer to my price range. Both will really move the snow once winter hits. The real problem is that my wife is totally against it. Every time I ask why, she just gives me this dirty look and walks away. How can I make her understand how important this is? -Hassled in Honolulu
Dear Loud Guy at the Bar, I’ve been trying to understand President George W. Bush’s plans for what he calls Social Security “reform,” but they’re just so complicated. He tells me that the trust fund is going bankrupt and needs radical changes, the Democrats say that it just needs minor tweaks and I have no idea who’s right. Now I have a lot of money invested in lead futures but I’ve always counted on some

Just wanted to thank the person who jacked my shoes, towel and beanie while I was out surfing at Paia Bay. I mean WHO would steal from a 12-year-old grom? Clearly, you knew I was in the water. At the very least you could’ve left me my towel so I wouldn’t freeze when I got out of the water. But no. Oh well. Why anyone would want someone else’s used shoes, towel and beanie is beyond me, but hey—I don’t go around stealing things. Well, that’s about it. I just wanted to thank you for being a complete asshole.

Is this the end of Environment Hawai’i? If the medium is the message as Marshall McLuhan famously noted, then the Environment Hawai’i newsletter is a serious statement. Streamlined and concentrated, the publication has spent the last 15—as its name implies— aggressively reporting the threats that face Hawai’i’s environment. But like many plant and animal species throughout Hawai’i, Environment Hawai’i is on the brink of extinction. Financial troubles may lead to its demise as early as this June. “When I think of Environment Hawai’i having to close, a sadness comes over me knowing that Hawai’i’s important environmental stories will go unreported,” said Patrician Tummons, one of the Hilo-
Food Cops The following tale is taken straight from official complaints and inspection reports on file with the State of Hawaii Department of Health Food Safety office.
Establishment: Little Caesars Pizza Station
Location: 424 Diary Rd. in Kahului
Date: June 22, 2004
Time: 4:00 p.m. Little Caesars has meatballs? Well, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. For one customer at K-Mart’s pizza station, a cheap meal of meatballs, sauce and a side salad, eaten at 4 p.m. later went terribly wrong. By 8 p.m. that night the customer claimed to have experienced nausea, the no-good, lowdown cramps and vomiting. This led the customer to complain to the Health Dept. about the possibility of contracting a food borne illness. But a June 25 inspection—three days after the incident in question—didn’t find any food contamination. But the inspector did learn that the meatballs are frozen and then baked while the meat sauce is heated directly out of the can. The salads are fresh daily and ingredients have a holding time of no more than two days. Employees use gloves in all preparation and inspectors found no open sores on any employee’s fingers. No other complaints were filed. Praise from Caesar. -G. Poccia

based newsletter’s two founders. “There are so many critical issues crying out for coverage.” Since its founding in 1990, the newsletter has attracted a diverse readership, including government agencies, elected officials, planning firms, attorneys, legislators, students and residents. You’d think such a large fan base would make the newsletter—which has never run advertisements—financially sound. But that’s not the case. In fact, the newsletter has been having troubles for some time. In 2003, the Hewlett Foundation—one of a number of organizations that provides grants to the newsletter to keep it afloat—curtailed its funding of nonprofits in Hawai’i. Then there’s the fact that many people just read EH online, where it’s available for free.
Environment Hawai’i To help call (877) 934-0130 or visit www.environmnet-hawaii.org. Send tax deductible donations to Environment Hawai’i, 72 Kapi’olani Street Hilo, HI 96720 pineapple fields across Oahu. Environment Hawai’i’s reporting directly led the company to stop using the poison. A year later, Tummons broke the story of how Hawai’i’s longline fishermen were snagging endangered sea turtles. “We kept reporting on this situation and building on the story until there was widespread awareness,” said Tummons.
FOUNDERS TUMMONS AND MARJORIE ZIEGLER CREATED THE INDEPENDENT, NONPROFIT NEWSLETTER TO PROVIDE A HIGHER STANDARD OF ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING THAN THAT APPEARING IN HAWAI’I’S NEWSPAPERS. “I know there are a lot of people who read EH who don’t subscribe to it,” said Tummons. “We’ve managed to keep Environment Hawai’i’s subscription price bare-bones low [$35 a year] so it’s affordable for everyone.” To raise money, Tummons is considering charging a fee to see the publication online. “We were able to coast for a couple of years, but now we may have to call it quits without an increase in public donations and subscriptions,” said Tummons. Founders Tummons and Marjorie Ziegler created the independent, nonprofit newsletter to provide a higher standard of environmental reporting than that appearing in Hawai’i’s newspapers. Visually unassuming, this 12-page, double-sided monthly is printed on recycled paper and contains no advertisements or fluff to distract the reader’s attention. For 15 years, its two writers—just two—have helped shape public perception of Hawai’i’s environmental reality. The award-winning publication has reported on species protection, fisheries management, stream restoration, wastewater treatment and water contamination, to name a few. In 2003, the Hawai’i Society of Professional Journalists honored the newsletter. “We don’t get our information from news releases or interviews,” said Tummons. “We’re not satisfied with the rehearsed responses often obtained from lifetime bureaucrats.” In 1993, Tummon’s research uncovered how the Del Monte Corporation had stockpiled Heptachlor—a pesticide banned in 1978. And that they were still spraying it on their

It took time, but it worked. In February 1999, the Center for Marine Conservation and the Turtle Island Restoration Network sued the National Marine Fisheries Service, attempting to ban the practice. “In November of that year, federal district Judge David Ezra issued an injunction banning the entire longline fleet from about one million square miles of the Pacific around Hawai’i,” said Tummons. “That lasted a couple of years. The final resolution included restrictions on the swordfish fishery, changes in gear that make it less likely that turtles will get hooked, changes in bait [from squid to mackerel] among other positive changes.” For local environmental activists, the thought of losing Environment Hawai’i is tough to bear. “EH reporters are often the lone public presence at crucial meetings of state and county regulatory agencies responsible for public health and the continued survival of our rarest and most unique life forms,” said Lucienne de Naie, vice chairwoman of the Hawai’i chapter of the Sierra Club. “Without EH’s excellent research and reporting the public would have limited scrutiny and knowledge of vital decisions being made every day that affect us all and generations to come.”
When they’re not scrutinizing local establishment time sheets or trying to grill licensees on why they pled not guilty to some charge against them, your Maui County Department of Liquor Control likes to do a little lobbying in Honolulu. “Wayne [Pagan] and I went to the legislature to kill some bills,” said Commissioner Joe Tanaka near the end of the March 9, 2005 Liquor Commission hearing, referring to numerous “bad bills” that liquor industry lobbyists were pushing. One of them would have scrapped all the county LCs in favor of a single, statewide liquor office—similar to that used for many years in California. Tanaka didn’t elaborate on how that particular bill would have been “bad”—beyond removing the need for guys like Tanaka to wear red polo shirts emblazoned with the LC badge. “Everything came out to our advantage,” said Assistant LC Director Pagan. Interestingly enough, one of those bills the LC let pass without a fight dealt with the Kahana-based Fish & Game Brewing Co., the only brewpub on Maui. For the last couple years, Fish & Game Brewmaster Tom Kerns has been working on legislation to make it easier for his—and the seven other brewers in Hawai’i—to distribute their beer to other establishments and the general public. When brewpubs—establishments that actually manufacture their own beer—first became legal in Hawai’i 10 years ago, they lacked certain practices that their mainland counterparts enjoy. Customs, really, like selling beer retail or in two-liter or half-gallon “growlers” to customers for them to take home. Because of Kerns’ efforts, which required his testimony before numerous state House and Senate committees, those practices are now legal in Hawai’i. “Initially there was a small amount of resistance from wholesale distributors,” said Kerns. “Distributors used to be against brewpubs doing everything. But we’re a small, locally owned and produced company. We can’t operate on economies of scale.” Citing a similar case in Oregon, Kerns said that as brewpubs grew, they found their own distribution inadequate for the task at hand and had to bring in wholesale distributors. He said that mollified Hawai’i distributors, who soon ended their opposition. As for the LC, Kerns said they provided no resistance. “They were very pleasant about it,” said Kerns. “It wasn’t a problem.”

WEDNESDAY, MAR. 23 A coalition of local environmental groups including Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation, Hawai’i’s Thousand Friends and the Sierra Club Hawai’i Chapter are calling for state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Director Peter Young to complete a fairly long list of tasks within two months or resign. Pissed at Young for his reluctance to ban commercial usage of the ‘AhihiKina’u Natural Area Reserve and his ham-fisted attempts to dissolve the State Water Commission, the groups want Young to hire a bunch of technically proficient deputy directors and managers, set deadlines for adopting instream flow standards throughout the state and just generally do his job. By coincidence, this comes as the state House Committee on Water, Land and Ocean Resources are considering auditing Young and the DLNR… The Associated Press is running a story today saying that Baghdad—which means “Garden of God” in Arabic—has really gone to seed. Gee, I wonder why! Now I would have thought that all the bombs we’ve been dropping and near-continuous mortar and small-arms fire we’ve been exchanging with the still nebulous insurgency 23 months after we supposedly won the war would have made the place a paradise on Earth. Silly me. In fact, the AP reported that London-based Mercer Human Resources Consulting surveyed 215 cities worldwide, and found that the quality of life in the so-called “City of Peace” has dropped to dead last—behind even Fargo, North Dakota! But there is good news—today’s Maui News is reporting that this week the island-based 411th Engineer Battalion of the U.S. Army Reserve will be returning to Hawai’i after a year’s tour in Iraq.
THURSDAY, MAR. 24 Haven’t said this in a while—or ever, now that I think about it—but God bless Donald H. Rumsfeld. Guy has a tough, tough rep, mostly because he’s in charge of a Department of Defense that allows American interrogators to beat and torture prisoners of war, authorized a too-small Iraqi invasion force that proved unable to defeat, much less contain a growing anti-American insurgency and still swaggers even though we failed to find Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, Osama bin Laden or a way out of this Middle Eastern quagmire we’ve made for ourselves. That being said, there’s an AP story in today’s Maui News that shows Rummy in a new, rational light. Speaking from Brasilia, Brazil—which I’m told is not at all like Fargo, North Dakota— Rumsfeld blasted the Venezuelan government’s bid to buy 100,000 AK-47 assault rifles from Russia—a move that would undoubtedly further destabilize a region of the world that already has far too many men with guns. “I can’t understand why Venezuela needs 100,000 AK-47s,” he said. “I can’t imagine if it did happen it would be good for the hemisphere.” Might be a little premature of me to say this, but I think this is the beginning of a new, more nuanced Bush Administration that finally sees the advantages of so-called “soft power”—culture, information, economic aid—over their current policy of simply bombing people. Even though they’ve had disagreements with Venezuela before, I think their opposition to the proposed weapons sale stems from a decent, honest desire to deescalate hot spots around the world.
My mistake. Today the AP’s reporting that we’re selling 24 F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, which is still in a sometimes cold, sometimes hot war with

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
SUNDAY, MAR. 27 It’s Easter, the one day out of the year when people get together to reflect on life, death and why it may or may not be necessary to fly from Maui to Oahu and present what looks to be an unexploded mortar round to National Park Service rangers at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. As I predict the Honolulu Advertiser will report tomorrow, the man wasn’t identified or arrested and the object was actually inert. But still, park officials evacuated more than 500 people.

its neighbor India. This sale, blocked since Dubya’s pop sat in the Oval Office in 1990, was considered punishment for Pakistan’s decision to begin manufacturing nuclear weapons. But don’t worry about this destabilizing the region further, an unnamed defense official told the AP: we’re also considering selling fighter jets to India.

wonder why environmental types have christened the boats the “Pineapple Ferry.”
Worried that the $1 million they’ve pumped into the proposed Hawaiian Superferry might not be enough to get the boats running, the Maui Land & Pineapple Company is trying to get its employees—well, the ones it hasn’t laid off—to start lobbying government officials. “Let your elected representatives know the Superferry is important to you,” The Maui News reported ML&P Chairman David Cole as telling employee gathering this week. “It is very difficult to justify investing in new facilities if we cannot have the state connect in terms of new harbor facilities.” And people
Burger King escalated the war for the allimportant “big dumb fat ass” customer demographic today with their new Enormous Omelet Sandwich, according to CNN. The 730-calorie, 47-grams-of-fat breakfast “item” has a sausage patty, three bacon strips, two eggs and two cheese slices. Compared to the Whopper, the Enormous Omelet Sandwich has 30 more calories and 5 more grams of fat. In unrelated news, pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson—the parent company of Cordis Corporation, which manufactures stents used in angioplasty surgery—is up a third of a point on the New York Stock Exchange.
TUESDAY, MAR. 29 You know, this whole thing about ML&P pushing the Superferry has got me thinking. Cole’s supposed to have all this political acumen, yet he’s found himself so mired in controversy that he’s pleading with his employees—still reeling from recent lay-offs and the worry of more layoffs—to boost the ferry for him. What if last year he’d pushed for the Superferry to undergo a full environmental review instead of the quick, suspicious-looking rush we have now? The environmental activists would have lost their strongest argument. So the Superferry would have undergo an Environmental Impact Statement—these things happen all the time. Unless Cole was worried it couldn’t pass muster… Hey, I’m just saying! Anthony Pignataro wonders why more cities aren’t like Fargo, North Dakota. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD DOGS WHO LIVE BETTER THAN PEOPLE Sales of bottled water for dogs (with prices similar to that for people) are growing, according to a March Wall Street Journal report, spurred not only by sudden concern about vitamin deficiency but apparent certainty among some owners that their pets find tap water disagreeable and thus are dangerously at risk of dehydration. Of course, veterinarians cited by the Journal are puzzled by this recent rejection of municipal water and suggest it might be a food-bowl-smell problem rather than a new dog generation’s preference for fine beverages. Also, some vets believe dogs prefer the cooler temperature of, say, toilet-bowl water to that of foodbowl water.

but, unexpectedly, the traders turned on them, punching and kicking the protesters until they ran for their lives. Two were hospitalized. Said one protester, “I’ve never seen anyone less amenable to listening to our point of view.”
FLORIDA CHILDREN AT RISK After several incidents of teacher-student sex in Florida, it was almost a relief in January that Perry, Fla., teacher Natalie Whalen, 58, was accused only of biting a student who had tried to take a CD player from her desk or that, in February, Orlando high school chemistry teacher Perry Pieski, 42, was accused only of teaching his class how to make a bomb. But the crisis returned in March when a man revealed in a divorce deposition that not only had he had trysts with his son’s Boynton Beach elementary school music teacher, Carol Flannigan, but so had the son.
THE UNRULY MOB On Thika highway in Nairobi, Kenya, in February, frenzied and hungry villagers brawled for access to meat from a baby hippopotamus (about 1,700 pounds) that had been killed by a passing vehicle. Amidst the kicking and punching, two people were stabbed. Two weeks earlier, in the London suburb of Edmonton, 6,000 Ikea customers rioted, vying for on-sale sofas (80 percent off) and other bargains. Said one customer, “There were people diving on sofas” and “tugging at two different sides of the same sofa and shouting ‘mine, mine.’” At least 20 people were taken by ambulance to hospitals.

TESTICLES IN THE NEWS In February, Amanda Monti, 24, of Birkenhead, England, was sentenced to 30 months in jail for ripping off one of her exboyfriend’s testicles with her bare hands in a rage over his refusal to have sex. According to witnesses, Monti briefly hid the testicle in her mouth, but a friend retrieved it and handed it back to the man, saying, “That’s yours.”

Death by Consumption The push for a national sales tax

They’ve trashed protection for bankrupt consumers and sunk their fangs into the soft fleshy throat of Social Security. Now Republicans are laying the groundwork for the ultimate goal in their ongoing war against the idea that government has a duty to mitigate economic injustice: replacing the income tax with a national sales tax. If current GOP trial balloons lead to full flight, their long-hoped-for replacement of the progressive tax structure in place since World War I with a fully regressive, McKinley-era system would be complete. Republicans count on our ignorance of history as they quietly re-spin the national consensus on taxation. Could that be why
to 10 percent of GDP. Increased revenues allowed the federal government to fund massive mobilizations in two world wars, launch expensive anti-poverty and public works programs to fight the Depression, outlast old Europe and outspend its principal international rival, the Soviet Union, into bankruptcy. Government also acted as an agent of wealth redistribution, using taxes dunned from the wealthy to help Americans in need. Income taxes transformed us into a superpower and helped create the large middle class that capitalist economies require for continuously expanding consumption. Ah, yes, consumer spending. Bush’s economists argue that “removing the tax… on savings and investment…would increase savings
A HIGH NATIONAL SALES TAX—IT WOULD HAVE TO BE BIG TO REPLACE TAXES ON SAVINGS AND INCOME—COULD PLUNGE US INTO A DEPRESSION. they relentlessly slash the education budget? There is, after all, a precedent for an America without a progressive income tax: the late 19th century. Back then the government relied on three sources of revenues: tariffs, property taxes and sales taxes. High tariffs, critics on the left and right agreed, stifled trade and drove down wages. And, since everyone buys the same necessities at the same prices, sales taxes fell disproportionately heavily on the poor. The average worker earning the equivalent of $30,000 a year spent all or almost all of that $30,000. The average person taking home $300,000 spent less and saved more—savings that, under the consumption tax scheme, was gloriously taxfree and, for the most part, sat in savings accounts gathering interest. The disparity between rich and poor became staggering; robber barons built magnificent mansions while millions starved. There was no middle class to speak of. Because the Carnegies and Vanderbilts who had all the money paid few taxes, the government of the 120-yearold United States was too weak to maintain a strong standing army, much less compete internationally against France, Britain and the other colonial powers. The modern income tax, enacted in 1913 with rates ranging between one and seven percent, replaced most tariffs and consumption taxes. By 1945 federal taxes started at 23 percent with the wealthiest individuals paying 94 percent. Though the top rate has since fallen, individual income taxes have since hovered at eight

and investment.” That’s true. But if you’ve ever had to factor in the 20 percent national sales tax on goods purchased in Europe (they call it the “value added tax”), you know that taxes on purchases are as much of a disincentive as taxes on savings. Corpo-conservatives want you to think that investing creates most jobs. It doesn’t. Consumer spending generates 70 percent of GDP. A high national sales tax—it would have to be big to replace taxes on savings and income—could plunge us into a depression. There are, if you open your mind, other options. For example, a six percent tax on purchases of stocks, bonds and other securities would allow the complete elimination of individual income taxes: no more 1040s, no more H&R Block. Even the rich wouldn’t have to pay. Investors wouldn’t come out ahead until the value of their securities increased by at least six percent, but that’s also true about real estate. The standard six percent broker’s fee doesn’t seem to hurt the housing market. Or, given the rising disparity of wealth since 1975, we could restore the maximum 90 percent income tax on the wealthiest Americans. We had that during the 1950s, when the American century hit its zenith. We could hike taxes on corporations, and ban the creation of phony offshore headquarters whose sole purpose is the avoidance of taxes. Rich or poor, corporate or individual, government will collect its revenues from whomever screams the least. The howls of the rich and powerful for a consumption tax have disproportionate influence upon our supposed elected representatives. But the rest of us can scream too—and there are a lot more of us. Foam Sparrows Enjoying the secret world of Slope Soaring Chris and Dan are best friends from Tampa, Florida. They have an adversarial, comical energy that is reassuring. They remind me of a pair of quarrelling spouses. I recently met them in a secluded, rural area of Maui that I promised them I would not name. That’s because what they did out there is technically illegal. Several times a week, they and their friends visit this place to engage in Slope Soaring. It’s one of the only places on the island they can use. That’s because Slope Soaring requires specific conditions: consistent wind, a good throwing spot and a good funnel for wind gusts. But the equipment is minimal. You take a shaped piece of EPP foam like that used in boogie boards, attach a few mechanical wind foils connected by remote control, then throw the foam wings into the air. The craft look likes an enlarged boomerang. In flight, it recreates the physics of a bird coasting a puff of wind. “I would think that Maui is one of the best places in the world to do this,” Dan told me, looking around. “I mean, look at this. You got good visibility and look at that.” I look at that. “What are those cliffs?” he asked. “Two hundred, 250 feet? The deeper the slope, the more momentum the wind has to give the plane good lift.” From our vantage point, we can look up at the flyers. They look like flirting sparrows, hypnotically darting and weaving, gaining speed, doing barrel rolls and aerial formations. It is silent and bright and beautiful.
It’s coming around again! Hit the deck! The cliff soaring community is small, tightly knit and extremely secretive about the spots they visit. Time after time they explicitly instructed me not to identify their location or identities. “Don’t use my name,” one told me. “You can say anything you want, just don’t say my name,” said another. We were only out there a few hours when Chris lost his craft. The wind died suddenly and he lost control. It went down off to the east, maybe onto the cobblestone beachhead and hopefully not into the sea. It was getting dark and Chris ran off to fetch his craft before nightfall. I go to help him.
Scrambling down the hill I notice his plane sitting on a precarious edge of the cliff. It stands out, stranded upon the black rocks, a white piece of foam with yellow and red racing stripes. He wants to get his plane. “Dude, this looks doable but, I dunno,” he said. I warned him against trying. I pointed out all the loose rocks along the cliff face and said that if he stepped on of them, they would all slide and he would fall. The plane was only about $200 bucks, I said—not worth dying for. So we sat on the windy cliff, unsure of what to do next. I vainly tried to throw a rock at the plane, hoping to knock it loose. But the rock
missed its fell down, shrinking to a dot like on a Roadrunner cartoon. Babalouie (obviously not his real name) said he wanted to climb down and get it. Big and hairy with a big bushy beard, Babalouie looked like a pirate. Well, a pirate who was wearing overalls and kept drinking tequila from a silver flask. “Babalouie,” I said. “I don’t want to watch you die.” He ignored me, then negotiated his sizeable frame down the mountain. “I just wanna have a look-see,” he said, grunting. Rocks began to fall down the side of the cliff and into the ocean. But he made it. Despite the secrecy the Slope Soarers sought, their spot sure attracted a lot of tourists driving by. They always stopped and asked what we were doing. “God damn it if I didn’t think y’all were hangliding!” said one potbellied mechanic from Chicago. “Honey, didn’t I say these fellers was hang glidin’!” His wife smiled meekly. “Then I thought y’all was feedin’ them birds,” he said, sounding like one of the Blues Brothers. “Then I saw the colors and I said ‘ain’t no way those are birds!’” At one point a wealthy gentleman and his adolescent son from Boston stopped. They ended up flying one of the planes, which promptly crashed into the gulf. “That’s the downside of flying, having to run and get it when it crashes and burns,” said one of the Slope Soarers. The rich guy smiled sheepishly at the embarrassment of having crashed the plane. But he went down the gulch to get it, leaving his son to hold the remote control and look bored. A Chinese couple pulled up and took great pains to photograph one of the craft in flight. Later a group of Germans pulled up. “Eh! Incredible!” one shouted. They were all fascinated. “Eh! No engine? All natural? Eh! How very fantastic!” “Sometimes we are mean to the tourists, kinda,” said one of the hobbyists. MTW

The
Molokai Cowboy I had to hitchhike to the Molokai Ranch. On the way I was picked up at the gas station by Kamo, a self described “chocolate and banana farmer.” He was curious about me and eventually offered to put me up in his home. I told him I was on my way to interview Jimmy Duvauchelle. I asked him if he could he tell me anything. “Everyone love Uncle Jimmy,” he said as we drove.

Standing on one of the windswept plateaus of the Molokai Ranch, all the lush growth below seemed to lose dimension. The tall grass looked flat and smooth, as though I were flying high above the Great Plains of the American Midwest. I tried to imagine it covered in livestock. Ten thousand cattle at a time roamed here. Standing next to me was Jimmy Duvauchelle, “Uncle Jimmy,” as he’s known across the island. He’s the head cowboy for the Molokai Ranch, a sprawling property on the Western side of Molokai. He certainly looks the part, tall and upright with a torso capable of summoning incredible strength. He grew up here, riding and lassoing just as his forefathers did. Although he is getting old, with a slight paunch growing above his belt, he is still ruggedly handsome, with striking green eyes and an easy smile. Upon meeting him I noticed how much he reminded me of Sam Elliot, the Hollywood actor prone to playing in small screen adaptations of Louis L’Amour novels. Duvauchelle wears many hats. “I am the uncle to this island, the grandfather to this ranch, the head cowboy and the pastor for the ranch church,” he said. The E Komo Mai non-denominational congregation meets every Sunday in the barn. “Go in there, sweep it out, put the carpets out, assemble the prayer teams and get to work,” Duvauchelle told me were his responsibilities. “Put the pulpit right in the middle.” Duvauchelle has a soft voice and is seemingly shy, gentle and almost timid. He would always patiently wait until I
h a d stopped writing to continue talking. Perhaps because he is so photogenic, with the Hollywood looks photographers appreciate, he is often featured in promotional literature for Molokai. He deals often with journalists. He knows all the poses for a good headshot. “Molokai was very simple then,” he said of the old days growing up. “A simple life is what he had. The cowboy would provide the meat, venison.” Then he paused to look at the notes I was writing. “Better call it the pipi kaula,” he said smiling. “That’s Hawaiian for meat. “We had a system and everybody had a job, everybody played a part. We cowboys would exchange with the fishermen meat for fish, salt, the farmer would provide the taro for poi. We ate good and were healthy.” The lifestyle of the cowboy, Hawaiian or otherwise is difficult. Few people would be able to withstand the physical pressures of the work. “We didn’t know it was hard work, see, it was all we knew,” Duvauchelle said as we ride in his truck. “We had nothing else really, to compare it with. But in retrospect, knowing what I know now, it is hard. Guys would go home
pasture. We would sleep there, eat there. Next day, getup, keep going, another 5,000 acres then rest. It would take us one week to make the drive from one side to the other. “In those days we had 10,000 heads,” he continued. “My dad was the rough rider. His job was to break the horses in. They ride the horses out until it can’t buck anymore, then he would hand it over to the cowboys. It was a hard job. “Back in 1923, the ranch set aside 7,000 acres to make pineapple, that’s when the true lifestyle began to change a little bit,” he said, showing me the land were the pineapple was grown. We passed a small housing settlement on the hill near his house. “Know who used to live there before?” he asked, grinning. “The Pineapple bosses.” With the change in infrastructure came a threat to the paniolo way of life, one of many to come. “They weren’t so dependant on us cowboys anymore,” Duvauchelle told me. “The economy had changed toward fruit production. As they cut back on the land, they cut back on the cattle. “We would teach the children the lifestyle early, as little keikis they would learn about the lasso, horses. Learn respect. Get one really small calf, like a
does now. With technology things are so much easier but you also lose something. While the work is hard, you get a connection with what you are doing. What my father did in one week I do in one hour. You would ride and ride and not see another cowboy for six hours. No lunch, keep working. Then eventually there were laws that said a man can’t work for a certain time without getting overtime. Most of us never listened to that. They would just carry on. We would work until we were done. That was our way. But by that time it was the official end of the paniolo lifestyle, as I knew it. Attitudes started to change. It became less of the lifestyle and more a business. Things became more modern.” I asked him where it was all going. “Real estate,” he said without hesitation. “The hardest thing was branding,” Duvauchelle said. “It is really hard but important to the paniolo culture because it’s bonding with the cattle. People get mad about that now but they don’t understand it. “You have to subdue the animal, you bond with it. After the brand there is a mutual respect, the animal knows you are in control and you respect the cattle for the fight. Now it is all gone, branding is modernized, mechanized. I wish that we kept the old ways.
“THE HARDEST THING WAS BRANDING,” DUVAUCHELLE SAID. “IT IS REALLY HARD BUT IMPORTANT TO THE PANIOLO CULTURE BECAUSE IT’S BONDING WITH THE CATTLE. PEOPLE GET MAD ABOUT THAT NOW BUT THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND IT. with no shirt, no pants. You wear one watch—forget it, braddah. Your watch is gonna be gone by the end of the day, and watches were expensive in Molokai in the old days! Like one luxury item.” The concern for one’s watch wear was purely aesthetic, I suppose, for cowboy time was on its own orbit. “Days began early and were long,” Duvauchelle said. “We would wake up at 4 a.m., before the sun rose. The stable boy would bring the horses to the stable and feed them, then the cowboys would come in and begin the drive. “The drive would start at Kualapu’u, that’s the beginning of Molokai. Then drive the cattle 5,000 acres to the next

baby and have a keiki lasso it or wrestle it down. Kids now don’t do that. Someone would say, ‘Hey, be easy on them kids!’ But that’s the only way they are gonna learn. You have to be brave with the animal, familiar with it. You can’t learn that at college, you have to be taught early. “Those days it wasn’t work, it was life,” he continued. “Now it’s like someone you work for. It’s like that vase, you can make the vase, create it, or you can just take the vase and move it over there. That’s the difference I mean. “In the days of my grandfather it would take 10 men to do what one man

“After the branding there was a pai’na, like a party, feast. We would party down. Cook meat, have some fish, take some beer. The beer would relax you, after all that work, the beer would make you relax, wind down.” Jimmy Duvauchelle is a bridge between worlds. One is disappearing, the other gaining increasing ground. As I surveyed the grounds I noticed neatly arranged paths cutting a swath across the grassy expanse. I asked him what they were. “It called an alley,” he said. “Instead of taking all the cattle across the whole property, we just rustle them

through these channels. Like a cannery, I guess.” Duvauchelle began working as a full-time cowboy in the late 1960s, a period marked by a rapid social evolution into an industrial economy. “In those days, you were born in the ranch, you lived on the ranch, and you died on the ranch,” he told me as we walked through a stable. “Now it is more separated, home life and work life. But then everything in your life was provided by the ranch, babysitters, bus would take the kids to school. I miss that. The lifestyle would repeat itself, you raise your kids on the ranch and they take over when you are old. Just like now, my grandson is a rancher, my sons were ranchers and I taught them what I knew, just as my father did for me.” Duvauchelle himself has several children and grandchildren. His grandson works on the ranch with him, the sixth in a generation of Hawaiian cowboys. Still, the hard work and long hours took their toll. “Seven years after I started working, I guess because I was an outstanding worker they made me foreman which meant early mornings and late nights,” he said. “Four a.m. to 10, 11 at night. I worked so hard that I couldn’t be as much as a father to my son as I wanted. There became this separation between us in a way. I would spend so much time on the ranch, taking care of the cattle that, in a way I missed my son growing up, missed the things that mattered. “One day I came home and felt something missing,” he continued. “I knew something was missing, I didn’t know what. I sat and looked at the walls, looked in the mirror and in the drawers and tried to figure it out. It was my kids. They had gone away to college, had lives of their own. “Eventually, my kids came back to the ranch and I have made up for the lost time, as much as I could. They worked with me, my oldest girl and my youngest girl are still here but my son moved to Maui, to be a construction worker. I was glad for the opportunity I gave him.” I looked in Ducauchelle’s sea green eyes, and saw a touch of sadness. MTW

live music. But after the kitchen closes at 9 p.m., the Blue Lagoon shows its other face. The waterfall gets turned off, the stereo is turned up and the Blue Lagoon starts catering to Lahaina’s night crowd. The bar is a great place to watch sports and enjoy popular pub munchies, like loaded potato skins and chicken skewers. And that’s fine. Hey, lots of places are like that. But unlike most bars, the Blue Lagoon is one of the few bars on Maui that serves Guinness on tap.
Because it’s got an open-air setting, bargoers light up without the area getting too stuffy or smoky. The Blue Lagoon will stay well lit throughout the night. That being said, it’s not that great a place to find a date. Some might consider that a minus, but it’s actually an advantage. The place always maintains a consistently friendly and laidback mood. From your street level vantage point, you will see a lush and lively oasis complete with a wrap-around waterfall, fishpond and colorful tabletops hand-painted by local artists. There’s an almost Disneyland feel about the place. It’s too colorful, too tropical. It’s Hawai’i by way of Hollywood. For tourists just off the boat, the place must seem as familiar as an episode of Magnum, P.I. Not that any of this is bad—it’s actually kind of comforting at times. The Blue Lagoon is now under new ownership. Its new menu features a salad bar as well as other revisions to the menu, including local fare, burgers, steaks and fresh fish. Prices vary from $7.95 for burgers to around $16.95 market price for fish. One of the most delicious items is the warm Kula spinach tomato salad for $9.95. WEEK A S T O L D T O K E L LY C H A M B E R S
Darla Byramian Server, Buzz’s Wharf One thing funny about my work is my quirk gets in the way. I’m a little anal retentive, as some coworkers say. I’m obsessed with small details, like if little things are out of place. If the work computer is moved even a little to the left or something, I’ll notice and it’ll bug me. And at Buzz’s we’ve got different colored straws. In my customers’ drinks, I like the straws to be all the same color. That’s why I have to garnish my own drinks. I want them perfect, I want them beautiful. I get made fun of because of it. They’ll say, “don’t touch those drinks, they’re Darla’s.” I moved here two and a half years ago from Grass Valley, near Lake Tahoe. I love Maui. I love everything about Maui. It has the same relaxed ways as where I grew up. It’s got that small town feel where if your car breaks down and you pop your hood, suddenly you’ve got five people to help you out. The people here are friendly, helpful. I also love to ride my bike all over the island. I used to ride from Wailuku to Ma’alaea when I worked days. It was awesome but I got scared because I almost got hit a couple times. Drivers here are in a hurry, sometimes driving too fast. That’s why I like biking, too. You notice things and can appreciate things that you can’t do when whizzing by in a car. I love my job, too. It’s made me love fish. Back home we didn’t have fresh fish like here. I guess you could say I’m expanding my horizons with fresh fish and seafood. I always recommend our Tahitian Prawns. They’re the best. We’ve got a lot of regular customers that come in here all the time. I think because the food is great, the service is great and we’ve got excellent whale watching. MTW

Tyrannosaurus REX Friday, 7 p.m. at Baldwin High School [COMEDY] Rex Navarrete is a Filipino funny guy of gargantuan proportions. Everyone thinks so. Like the Phillipine Daily Inquire in Manila, for instance, which states “No one is safe from Rex Navarrette’s barbed humor.” Or the San Francisco Chronicle, which says “Navarrete has been doing stand-up for more than a decade, bringing honest but edgy bicultural comedy to a growing following across North America. He loves being Filipino, embraces it, makes it central to his material.” Hey, even “Pinoy Catholics with messiah/guilt issues,” as Rex puts it, will think so, too. The PG-13 rated April Fool’s Comedy Jam will also feature special guests Da Braddahs. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. For more info, call 3571157 or visit www.rexnavarrete.com. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
The Magic Dude Fest Thursday through Apr. 7, 5 p.m. at Warren & Annabelle’s in Lahaina [MAGIC] Dana Daniels is a “comedy magician.” That he means he’s supposed to make you laugh when he’s sawing the chick in half. He’s worked the Improv in L.A., The Golden Nugget in Vegas and Magic Island in Houston. He’s even appeared with Lance Burton—the TV magician who made David Copperfield disappear. And Morgan Freeman thinks he’s hilarious! “I nearly fell out of my chair!” the actor who won a Golden Globe Best Actor award in 1990 for his portrayal of the chauffeur in Driving Miss Daisy said of Daniels. And if Morgan Freeman thinks Daniels is funny, then you better damn well think so, too. For reservations call 667MAGIC. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Well, there’s no place better than straight from the taro field workers of East Maui. A free event featuring food, live music and hula, as well as local arts and crafts, taro and tapa demos and environmental exhibits. For more info, call 264-1553.

Sunday, 6 p.m. at Hapa’s; Tuesday, 9:30 p.m. at Casanova; Wednesday, 9 p.m. at Hapa’s [MUSIC] She’s been called the Lauryn Hill of reggae. But it’s not just her silky voice that merits that comparison. On her latest album, Gracious Mama Africa, reggae roots empress Dezarie makes conscious pleas for people power in social justice and racial equality. She’s never been to Hawai’i but islanders here already love her, making her one of the most requested reggae artists on air and in the record stores. These Maui shows will also feature special guests Marty Dread, DJ Boomshot and MC Spence Jah. Sunday night’s show is all ages. Tickets: $20 in advance at Request Music (Lahaina & Wailuku), Beachfront Records (Kihei), Bahama Mama’s (Pa’ia), online at www.reggae-paradise.com or $25 at door. Call Hapa’s at 879-9001 or Casanova at 572-0220.
Man of La Mancha Fest Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 5 p.m. at the Iao Theater [STAGE] It’s a cool story: the classic tale of Don Quixote. It’s a story of honor, nobility, chivalry and optimism rather than cynicism. Concepts and words that are scarce, if nonexistent in our vocabulary. And yet, there’s music! So the ideals seep into your brain like that “It’s a Small World” song at Disneyland. Tickets: $20 adults, $18 seniors and students, $15 (for everyone) Sunday. To purchase in advance, visit If the Shoe Fits in Wailuku, www.mauionstage.com online or call the Maui OnStage box office at 242-6969.

Sex, Sin, Slime and Serious Shadows Sin City is a gung ho fiesta Sin City is a high contrast tour de force cinematic adaptation of Frank Miller’s hugely popular and wickedly grotesque graphic novel homage to the hard-boiled style of Dashell Hammett and Mickey Spillane. Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Madsen, Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Rutger Hauer, Rosario Dawson and Jessica Alba are just some of the dream cast members playing unpredictable characters that will take your breath away. Filmed with state-of-the-art special effects Sin City is a lush stylized dark and gritty film that weaves together three Frank Miller stories (The Big Fat Kill, The Hard Goodbye and That Yellow Bastard) with eye-popping results that threaten to addict audiences to the movie for repeated viewing. The pitch-dark shadows that splay across every B&W image in Sin City evince a wellspring of emotional depth and cruel intention that’s expressed with markedly non-intrusive voice-over narration by the protagonists of each story. Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is an uncompromising honest cop who does eight years of hard time for a crime he didn’t commit in order to protect a little girl named Nancy after she’s kidnapped by the serial rapist son (Nick Stahl) of the town’s corrupt Senator (Powers Boothe). Michael Madsen comes up short by giving stilted line readings as Hartigan’s corrupt cop partner Bob, and his performance stands out like a sore thumb in a movie where every other actor delivers Miller’s cynical dialogue with pitch-perfect precision. Mickey Rourke steals the movie as
Marv, a virtually indestructible hulk of a bastard addicted to violence, booze and pills. “Marv was born in the wrong century,” the movie tells us. “He belongs on some ancient battlefield, swinging an ax into somebody’s face.” Marv’s taste for blood is piqued after the murder of a hooker named Goldie (Jamie King) who showed him one “night of kindness.” Marv sets off on an ass-kicking investigation that finds him doing things like dragging a man facedown on the street by one hand as he speeds along in his car with the door open. Once Marv locates his serial killer prey Kevin-one very tweaky Elijah Wood-it’s all about amputation and decapitation. As all action movie fans know, a film’s entertainment value goes up eminently whenever there’s a decapitation involved. Clive Owen rounds out the pulpy noir fun as Dwight an all around bad ass who gets caught in an apocalyptic battle between the cops and the mob as the result of a mistaken cop murder performed by the gun-and-sword wielding prostitutes of Old Town. “You’ve got to prove to your friends you’re worth a damn. Sometimes it means dying. Sometimes it means killing a whole lotta people” is the way Dwight explains his philosophy. Where last year’s Sky Captain and the World Of Tomorrow rendered flaccid results with its overstated use of green screen CGI technology, Sin City uses eye-catching reverse-out negative imagery and significant splashes of color to emphasize character traits and show action exactly as Miller originally drew them in his novels. Black and white characters bleed bright white blood from black bullet wounds. The effect facilitates the Miller’s sinewy noirinflected language that continually hits you like blast of cold, smoky air. Guillermo Del Toro has said the key to a great comic book movie is that its creators “do it out of passion.” There’s a lot of that precious stuff in every frame of Sin City. It’s like a fantasy nightmare where real living people morph into super-action visions of beguiling elegant brutality. MTW

Trory O’ Shea Was Here 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater This charming dramatic comedy about two physically handicapped friends addresses—and puts a new and profoundly affecting spin on—the essential human need for dignity, for freedom, for mastery over one's life. Executed with heart and humor, "this is the kind of inspirational triumph of the human spirit movie that actually earns its crowd-rousing response" (Hollywood Reporter). Winner of the prestigious Edinburgh Film Festival. 104 minutes. Rated R.
New This Week THE BEAUTY SHOP – (PG-13) – Comedy – Here we are back in the chair again. Gina (Queen Latifia) has finally had it with her egotistical boss (Kevin Bacon). She ups and leaves, not only to open up a shop of her own but also taking a few of the key clients and shampoo girl (Andie MacDowell, Mena Suvari and Alicia Silvertsone). Fixing up this rundown salon, Gina inherits a very colorful and sexy sassy new group of people, or just what is needed in a beauty shop a bunch of chatty Kathy’s.

SIN CITY – (R) – Action-Adventure and Crime/Gangster – Another tale of a violent city
where the police department is more corrupt than the law-breaking bad seeds. This futuristic tale follows three stories, including one involving Marv (Mickey Rourke), a bad ass who is a Terminator-like, nearly impossible-to-kill street fighter. He goes on a rampage of vengeance when his one-night-stand gets murdered—correction, his one true love. What a guy to care the morning after! Also starring Bruce Willis, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Madsen and Jessica Alba. See Film Critique. THE UPSIDE OF ANGER – (R) – Drama – A sharpwitted suburban wife, Terry Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen), has just been abandoned by her husband and is left to raise her four dsyfunctional, headstrong daughters. Hmmm... why did the husband leave again? Things get even more hectic when she falls for her neighbor Denny (Kevin Costner), a once-great baseball star turned radio DJ. Can you do that? Go Kevin! So now she has a new drinking buddy, but that causes havoc with the girls when they’re forced to juggle their mom’s new romantic interest along with their own dilemmas. Yep, sounds familiar.
Now Showing BE COOL – (PG13) – Crime/Comedy – In this long-awaited sequel to Get Shorty, debt collector-turned movie producer Chili Palmer (John Travolta) turns into a music producer and decides to promote a struggling singer who’s also being chased by the Russian Mafya. Also stars Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Danny DeVito and the rest. MISS CONGENIALITY 2 – (PG13) – Comedy – Goofy cute chicks rule! Like, Sandra Bullock for instance, who’s reprising her role as an FBI agent this time going undercover as a Las Vegas showgirl. Julia Roberts used to be cute and goofy, too, before she got all gaunt and sophisticated. But she’s not in this one anyway, so nevermind. CONSTANTINE – (R) – Action-Adventure, Suspense, Horror and Thriller – As our astute intern puts it, this film looks like a cross between The Matrix and Devil’s Advocate. We love that good vs. evil, Heaven and Hell stuff! Plus, it’s got beautiful Kauai-boy Keanu Reeves playing the tortured investigator of supernatural mysteries and hottie Rachel Weisz as... well, who cares. GUESS WHO – (PG-13) – Comedy – Bernie Mac plays a sarcastic dad who’s less than pleased that his daughter wants to marry some white dude played by

Ashton Kutcher. Now, I know it sounds dumb, but if you… ah, who am I kidding. HITCH – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – Will Smith plays a matchmaker who uses less than honest methods in his work—whahhhhh???!?!—and then gets busted by a totally hot undercover reporter played by Eva Mendes. Oh, and there’s a chick in the movie named after a popular antihistamine. ICE PRINCESS – (G) – Romantic comedy - Don’t think this is another Ice Castles, people. It’s just another one of them formulaic, cute teen chick underdog battles against “the popular girls” to rise up the ranks and win... something. A trophy? The presidency? Oh yeah, selfesteem. Whoopee. We all know self-esteem gets you nowhere. Just look at Robert Blake! Stars Michelle Trachtenberg, Joan Cusack and Kim Cattrall. THE PACIFIER – (PG) – Action/Adventure, Comedy, Family – Vin Diesel stars as some Navy SEAL guy who has to protect—and baby-sit—five wild kids from the same killers who bumped off their scientist parent. Get it? He gets to take out the trash—both literally and figuratively! Who comes up with this stuff? THE RING 2 – (PG13) – Horror – That same hot blonde from the first Ring flick (Naomi Watts) and her daughter are in this one, and they’re still being terrorized by a VHS tape that kills people, but this movie is actually totally new. First of all, it takes place six months after the original Ring, and it’s in a completely different town. Also stars David Dorfman and Sissy Spacek, who I guess is having hard times and is going back to her bread and butter horror work.

ROBOTS – (PG) – Animation, Sci-Fi, Comedy – This computer-generated cartoon details a world populated by robots. Yes, I know it sounds fantastic and even a bit childish, but really, this place actually exists! And I’ve been there! No, I swear—what? No, I haven’t taken my meds, yet. Anyway, it features the voices of Mel Brooks, Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear and, of course, Robin Williams. SIDEWAYS – (R) – Comedy, Drama – This could be your typical road-tripping buddy flick, only the “buddies” in question are Miles (Paul Giamatti)—a downand-out failed novelist, middle school teacher and bitter divorcee but apt wine connoisseur—and his happygo-lucky friend Jack (Thomas Hayden Church), who has his own devious agenda for their big “wine tasting trip” before he gets married the following weekend. Also stars Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh.

“But the Most Promising [award] has always been my favorite,” he’s said. After performing in small clubs in Waikiki, Bumatai decided to give the mainland a try. He spent the next 10 years in Los Angeles, working clubs like the Comedy Store and opening for diverse artists like Tom Jones, Paul Anka, Kenny Logins, The Beach Boys, Charlie Daniels and Natalie Cole. When their children reached preschool age, Bumatai and his wife decided it was time to move back to Hawai’i. “The thought of my son turning to me one day and saying ‘Whoa, gag me with a spoon‚’ also played a small part in the decision,” Bumatai has said. Bumatai explained to me what he enjoys most about his work. “My favorite thing about performing?” he said. “It’s fun to see people enjoy themselves, it’s fun to get laughs. Comedy is not only an art, it’s a craft. Do I interact with the audience a lot? You have to. Because they laugh and then you wait. It’s not like a singer where you just sit there and after they are done, you clap. It really is like riding a wave, you know.” MTW

There isn’t much that’s funny about what’s happening to Akaku public access cable these days. Two bills in the state legislature are threatening its funding. It’s a serious situation. Yet comedy might just save the embattled station. On April 1 and 2, comedian Andy Bumatai and local entertainers David Gallagher and Leo Kani will present “The Comic Connection: Hawai’i’s Comics at their Best” at Wailuku’s newest nightclub Something Special. It will be the first in a series of Akaku benefit shows. “Andy Bumatai is phenomenal,” said Georgie Rocha, Akaku’s Development Director. “What I like about his style is that it’s very local comedy. A lot of it reflects island living. I’m also looking forward to seeing David Gallagher perform. He’s the opening act. Several people have told me he is just wonderful. Quite animated at times and very funny.” For Gallagher, who works as a county lifeguard when he’s not doing stand-up, the desire to support Akaku is a personal one. “It gave me an opportunity to firm up my skills on television doing a show several years ago called Late Night Maui,” he said. “Akaku has been a really great mouthpiece in the community. It has allowed people of all different views and walks of life to express themselves. It’s also been a really wonderful platform for letting the community know what’s going on out there. Akaku is one of those things that we as a community really need to preserve. That’s why I’m doing this.” And then there’s the opportunity to open for one of Hawai’i’s most famous comedians. “It’s exciting to be able to open for Andy Bumatai,” Gallagher said. “I admire his work and his style of humor. He’s smart and really quick and draws upon the elements of our life in the Hawaiian Islands for his humor. He’s been making people laugh for a long time.” Bumatai’s name speaks for itself. His early popular television specials include All in the Ohana and School Daze. “It’s nice to be able to come to Maui, perform, and help out community television,” he told me recently. Bumatai began his stand up career back in 1977. Within two years he had recorded his first album and won a Hoku award for Most Promising Artist. He went on to win three more Hoku awards for Best Comedy Album.

Maui Recycling Service If not now, when?
Your head’s spinning so fast someone might call in an exorcist. Just don’t start screwing yourself with a cross or vomiting pea soup, because for someone to put a stop to all this excitement—out of worry that it’s bad for you— would be a damn shame. This is good (albeit crazy) shit you’ve got going on right now. You’re probably a bit too shellshocked to really realize that. But once things have settled down slightly, you’ll look back on this week and notice that you got more than your fair share of lucky breaks. For now, just ride the insanity and trust me: You’re having a blast.
FREE Recycling Bins – And No Sign-up Fee! When you subscribe for 3 months of bi-weekly service – (A $25 value!) New customers only – offer expires 4/30/05
NOTICES
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Romance is in the air this week. Sure, it’s mostly of the cliché variety: long walks on the beach, gorgeous sunsets, red wine picnics, that sort of thing. But so what? Part of you loves that crap, admit it. Go ahead and indulge yourself—even if you’re by yourself. It’s what right, for the moment: taking simple pleasure in your existence. It doesn’t have to be outrageously original—what is, anyway? Just enjoy the sweet moments available to you right now—with whomever is able to revel in them with you, or alone, if no one’s nearby who’d get it.

MISCELLANEOUS
Focus on action, not dialogue. Words will just screw you up. Avoid them, please, as much as humanly possible. If you could go the whole week without uttering a single syllable, that’d be ideal. Chatting, gossip, monologuing: all currently taboo activities. However, your silver tongue still needs exercise, so have it wrestle another, instead of wrapping itself around complex ideas. That’s right. My advice this week: say it with a kiss. Don’t stop there, either. Be as physical as you dare. The more you stay in your body and out of your head, the happier, healthier, and hotter you’ll be.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Concentrate on just having fun. Next week’s Aries New Moon, combined with other astrological influences, may have you feeling frazzled. There’s plenty of pressure to make a fresh start, and next week’s the best time to put your Clean Slate Plan into action. But don’t stress out or worry! That’s the worst thing you could do. How do you expect your new beginning to work when its genesis is anxiety? Whether it’s a relationship, long-term project, or attitude that you want to reset, it would benefit the most from just one thing: you having fun. It’s as simple as that. Choose the new path that will make you laugh. The rest will fall, quite naturally, into place.

NEWS
Heal the rift. You know what I’m talking about: the crack that’s fractured your most important relationship(s). You have the power this week to patch it up, but you have to find it and (gently) explore exactly how wide and deep it is before you can do a proper repair job. You also need to accept that things will never be as they once were, never so seamless and perfect. The damage has been done. But even though it’s not in your power to hide the fracture completely, you’re perfectly capable of another minor (and, I think, better) miracle: making the whole, while less “flawless,” innately stronger and more crack resistant than before.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Beware of binging. Your abundance of restless energy is usually an asset, but only because you’re generally so good at directing it towards constructive endeavors. But when your willpower flags or you get distracted, as is likely this week, you might find yourself exhibiting some nasty compulsive behavior that could leave you feeling pretty bloated and shitty for days or weeks. Please forget being as productive as usual this week. Concentrate instead on keeping what you do get up to in the realm of low-impact. For example, too much bad daytime TV is easier to recover from than too much cocaine.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You’re surrounded by fakes. I don’t want to make you paranoid; believe me, you attract your fair share of genuinely sincere people as well. But this week it’s both tricky and crucial to figure out which is which. Suspect flattery. No matter how much you may deserve the compliments, they’re almost certainly fueled by some ulterior motive. Charm is a tool, and it can be quite effective when it comes to manipulating you, when you’re not on your guard. I don’t want to make you immune to the goodwill of others, however, so don’t let this week’s necessities become next week’s bad habits. Just turn up the scrutiny temporarily. Later, go back to taking people’s words at face value—life’s better that way.
AD DEADLINE MONDAY 4PM
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
TO ADVERTISE Call 661-3786
Come out of there, already. While it’s not totally out of character for you to imitate your namesake and crawl under a rock to hide and gather your strength, this isn’t the ideal time to do it. Yeah, you’re not at your best. You could use some restoration. But you’ve got to be alert to the rhythms of what’s going on around you. Now is when potential prey (not necessarily food—it could be an opportunity, a lay, or just a beautiful moment waiting to be seized) is out and about. If you take this time to withdraw and nap, there won’t be anything or anyone left when you come out to play. Have fun now. Rest later.
FAX NUMBER 808.661-0446
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Don’t be a rebel this week. You’ll just get squashed. Please, we need your powerful resistance to authority— that’s why choosing when you’ll oppose it and when you’ll abide by it is crucial. This week, some petty little bureaucrat’s likely to try to thwart you. You know you could knock this loser on his ass, but I’d advise you not to, galling as it may be to simply heed his tiny, ridiculous tyranny. Why? This guy’s just an unimaginative, buzzing little bee, easily swatted. But guess what? Anger him and the second he gets a chance, he’ll fetch the entire hive, and you’ll, quite simply, be screwed.
EMAIL classifieds@mauitime.com
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Be wary of self-belief. Confidence is good, but remember, you live in the realm of the possible. Don’t be tempted by the land of delusion just beyond its borders. Those boundaries are murky at best, partly because you’re so damn capable: you’ve already proven that things other people believe impossible are well within your reach. However, that self-assurance can only take you so far: I’ve never met anyone who could fly just because he believed he could with all his heart. You’re still subject to laws and limitations—just not that many of them. Recognize and acknowledge where and what those unbreakable rules are this week. Start with basic physics and explore from there.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Go the extra mile. I mean this quite literally. Taking that next, unlooked-for step or making that surprising additional bit of effort will almost definitely pay off this week. Make the meeting in person instead of over the phone or internet, even if it’s quite inconvenient for you. Bend over backwards. Do what’s necessary to demonstrate your incredible level of commitment and motivation. You’re the best person for the job (whatever the job is), but that may not be particularly obvious at first glance. A demonstration is in order. You’re capable of blowing your competition out of the water when you’re on top of your game. It’s either first place or no place; you know what you’ve got to do.
DROP OFF
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
505 Front St. Ste. 216, Lahaina
Your dreams and intuition are rife with truth and delusion. Trying to figure out when they’re insightful and when they’re full of crap can be tricky. This week, however, it ought to be astonishingly simple, because there’s no reason not to simply ask those your gut feelings’ concern. No one will look at you funny, or be offended, or freak out. Most will be appreciative, especially because once you know what’s really up, you’ll also know exactly what you’re supposed to do. A directed Pisces is an inspiring thing; everyone wants a piece of that action. Believe me, answering an odd or embarrassing question is a price anyone would pay to kick you into high gear.

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
‘If you don’t like me, I’m gonna make you hate me’ My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind. - Albert Einstein I don’t feel like I did a hell of a lot this past week. But I guess I have higher expectations for myself. It’s your fault, you know. Last Saturday, I cavorted with most of my favorite creative people at the Art Lounge in Makawao. There was live music, fantastic sushi from Dr. Fedwell’s Catering, a fashion show by designer Steph Vorpahl and wall-to-wall art by local artists and photographers. I marveled at the many talents of my lovely friends. “What has 46 pairs of breasts and 12 bras?” asked one. What? “A party upcountry,” she said. The next night, Sasha and I checked out Margaret Cho at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. BJ had wanted to come along, too, but as she was babysitting her 10-yearold nephew, she didn’t think it would be appropriate. I scoffed but as Cho launched into a discourse about anal sex, I silently praised my friend on her intuitive prowess. Cho was uproariously funny, as usual, as well as characteristically sassy and empowered. I loved her. “If you don’t like me,” she said, “I’m gonna make you HATE me.” Can I get that in a T-shirt? The opening comedian Bruce Daniels was hilarious, too. Especially when he was talking about the “type” of guys he’s into. I had to agree with him when he said, “It’s a really big buffet and I’m just really hungry.” Can I get a hallelujah? And a T-shirt? Thanks. The Easy roused Monday regulars at the Hard Rock Cafe in Lahaina. And we—Kim, Trin, Bodhi and I—were there to witness the happy nods and impassioned grooving of their good music. Of course, we were also there to consume many alcoholic beverages. On Thursday, I did my first radio show with AZD and G-Money on local hip-hop/R&B station Da Jam, 98.3 FM. It was in the morning so that was kinda rough but da guys were nice so hopefully they didn’t let me embarrass myself too much. You know, more than normal. Later that night, BJ and I went to Café Marc Aurel for live jazz. Local celebs Gene Argel and Shiro Mori are known for playing only the best in jazz and blues-tinged music. But the stunner was when Argel’s “little fellow” Makana—17-year-old bassist for hardcore metal band Corpsef*#ker—took the mic and belted out some of the smoothest jazz vocals I’ve heard in awhile. The next night I was back in action as the annual Gomega Fest pumped Hapa’s in Kihei full of eclectic music lovers. Vince Esquire, The Easy, Gomega, Otis, Hev B and Desmond D performed, with crowd-revving MC battles between sets. A good and proper local music fest. With booze! But all week I had been looking forward to Saturday. It would have been the one full day I could stay home at the Moroccan Bayou and finally read from the steadily increasing stack of books by my bed and maybe even see those Netflix movies I’ve had for months. And it was raining in Wailuku so really, there was no reason to go out and do anything. Unless maybe if I wanted an Irish Coffee. So Sasha and I went to Idini’s. And since we were already out, we decided to go to the SandBar, too. All I had wanted to do on Easter Sunday was eat a lot of chocolate bunnies. That and maybe have sex. But unlike other holidays like Passover and National Secretary’s Day, there was no sex or chocolate. Still, I had a nice time. I did the traditional Easter Sunday brunch thing—as in, my high school friend Heather and I drank Coors Light and rum ‘n cokes on the balcony of her Wailea resort room, hypocritically dishing about how fat all the bitchy cheerleaders were at our 10-year reunion, while her kid slept. When he woke abruptly from our cackling, I did what every good aunty does upon first meeting her young, impressionable nephew: I taught him how to open a beer for aunty. Later that afternoon, I joined Bodhi in Lahaina for a little din-din at Hecocks before the big blowout goodbye party for Cooper at Gaby’s. And although the pizzeria was packed with inked delights, I pooped out early and called it a night. I was all about seeing Willie K. play at Hapa’s on Monday. It’s been awhile—too long—since I saw his Hawaiian rawk geniusness. But the multitude of shell lei wearing, “Elaine”-dancing, stupidly smiling mulleeteers on the dance floor threw giggling BJ, Heather and caustic me waaay off our bar stools. We’re not snobs. We’re just mean. MTW
