So, Cort Gallup thinks he can be a state senator because he writes fear-based stories [for the Maui Weekly] on a mystical Big Cat and pro-GMO farmers (Coconut Wireless, Aug. 5)? Is that all it takes these days to become a state senator? Oh yeah, he does the “Gallup Poll.” Shame on me, how could I have doubted him? What makes Cort think he is qualified for this job? What makes former Mayor [Kimo] Apana think Cort has the experience? Is the former Mayor actually admitting that all you need to be a politician is name recognition? This is what is wrong with politics! I bet Apana’s first choice was the Big Cat, but he couldn’t find him. You people are making a mockery of our political system! What is his experience? I never saw a political or outspoken article by this man. Is causing unwarranted fear about a Big Cat considered outspoken or political? This has to be a joke. Ha, Ha, Ha, [Maui Weekly Editor in Chief/Publisher Joseph] Sugarman, you funny! Can you list for me some of his “outspoken” views? I’ve never known Cort to be interested in politics. I beg the people of Maui to vote with intelligence and not with blind loyalty to a political party! -Frank Pulaski, Kula

CRICKET DADS Great article (“Out for a Golden Duck,” Aug. 5). Thanks. We are hoping to make the cover some day soon! Cricket is more than some quaint old relic from colonial times. It is, in fact, the second most popular team sport after soccer, with millions of fans worldwide. For those of us involved in “re-instating” the game in Hawaii (and this country), it is thrilling to know that we could actually see the United States enter the World Cup. In any case, there is a lot of momentum in the country for cricket and we may soon be talking about “Cricket Dads” like we do about “Soccer Moms.” And it is exciting to

be a part of this movement. -Uday Kari, Maui Cricket Club

MOURNING TIGER KITTY I read about Coco and can’t believe this story (“Mourning Coco,” Aug. 5). What a tragedy. Even worse then the one I suffered when my five-yearold cat was trapped at Alaeloa and taken to [the Maui Humane Society] where she was also euthanized, the day I returned from my business trip. I urge you to act now to ID your pets so that you and your cat or dog won’t have to go through what our cat went through when MHS had to euthanize our beloved Tiger Kitty. This was a tragedy that could have been prevented. Reading the MHS mission statement gave me pause and more heartache. Tiger Kitty was a healthy, happy, spayed 5-year-old. She didn’t deserve to have her life ended this way. However, the staff of MHS was faced with a tough, unpleasant choice. They deal with so much of this on a daily basis, I feel for them. In “Tiger Kitty’s” case, she lost the luck of the draw this time. I know this incident is as hard on the vets and staff at MHS as it is on me. To the staff of MHS, I forgive you. I know how hard your job is. I only wish you could have given “Tiger Kitty” just one more day. -Georja Skinner, Napili

If she and my wife hadn’t stopped me I would have shut your filthy mouth right there in the seats. Later I realized that you’re just an old drunk and coward. You’re an old coward hiding behind some bitch’s skirt. I’ve since found out that you’re a lousy drunk and even your friends are tired of fixing messes you get yourself into. But I’m confident I’ll run into you one day when you won’t have your booze whore to protect you. Maybe I’ll see you on the road. You know, I work in the criminal justice system, and I can’t wait to see your name on a docket. Perhaps I’ll pull a few strings so you end up doing hard time for being such an ass. That is, if I get to you before your liver quits. In that case, I want you know that if you do die early I’ll piss on your stinking grave. What a sorry excuse for a man you are. No, I’m wrong. Send Out the Clowns Is there anything out there worse than McDonald’s?

The Trial That Never Was

It’s not fry time Nearly two-thirds of the American population is obese. In fact, the United States is the fattest nation in the world. Mississippi is the fattest state and Detroit is the fattest city. French fries are now officially the most eaten “vegetable” in America. In 1972, Americans spent $3 billion each year on fast food. Today, that number is closer to $110 billion. Over the next hour, Americans will eat more than a million animals. Because of all this, obesity leads to more than 400,000 deaths each year. In an effort to keep the big fast food empires from paying a price for those deaths, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the so-called Cheeseburger Bill in March. The bill prevents citizens from suing fast food corporations for

haps eclipsed only by sex. Then again, maybe not. In one poignant Supersize Me scene, girlfriend Alex Jamieson, who’s also a vegan chef, notes that her boyfriend is “not as energetic as he used to be. Those saturated fats are starting to block the blood flow to his penis.” Perhaps that’s the reason McDonald’s is targeting women now. In the past it focused on men, challenging them with questions like “Are you Mac Enough?” But over the past year, McDonald’s has shifted its vast advertising gaze to women, playing the heart strings of being loved and being in control of the world. The “I’m Lovin’ It” series features women with their choice of men—mail delivery boy, window washer, etc. In reality, the only things being delivered are calories and fat, but who wants to see that? Unless those window wash-

dominance has taken on all the trappings of Utopia, all McDonald’s offer organic milk and beef. In addition, half of the company’s 160 restaurants also run on renewable energy. Swedes can thank The Natural Step, an organization focused on ecological and economic sustainability. Through nothing more than citizen involvement, they’ve actually convinced the clown company to put on a different face. If we can convince McDonald’s to put saimin on its Hawaiian menus, we can get them to cut the fat entirely. MTW

A judge in a recent court case deemed fast food “McFrankenstein.” But best of all, this week the film Supersize Me screened for Congress as part of an effort to support the anti-corporate Menu Education and Labeling Act, while also challenging the Cheeseburger Bill as it moves through the Senate. “Eating responsibly at McDonald’s is like going to a strip club for the iced tea,” was how film critic Roger Ebert commented on Morgan Spurlock’s anti-fast food movie. Supersize Me brilliantly documents one man’s nauseating destruction over a month as he consumes food found only on a McDonald’s menu. Fast food is an American obsession, per-

It’s become a cliché that given the choice, kids can more easily identify Ronald McDonald than George Washington. This invariably leads to a generation of adults who can’t recite the pledge of allegiance but can get through all the bars of the McDonald’s commercial itemizing the Big Mac ingredient by ingredient. I’d seen better agendas, but the one for the Aug. 5 Maui County Department of Liquor Adjudication Board hearing looked solid. The well-known Wailuku hostess bar Club Chiemi was up on four counts, most of which dealt with serving a drunk. What was more, the club was pleading not guilty, which meant a trial, probably with recently retired state Land Use Commission chairman Lawrence Ing as their attorney. Walking into the hearing chamber, LC Director Franklyn Silva saw me reading the agenda. “One of the not guilty pleas on there is cancelled,” he said. “Club Chiemi. They cancelled their license.” Damn. The last time Club Chiemi had been before the Adjudication Board was Jan. 8, and it was a strange one. It began with six counts dealing with serving a drunk and having at least one unregistered employee drinking on duty, but Club Chiemi’s attorney Ing plea-bargained that down to three by pleading no contest. “You know, David, I cannot lie to you,” Club hostess Tiffany Nguyen told LC Investigator David Olsten. “[Another hostess on the night in question] was drinking Coors Light beer… You know how it is, David. Some customers only buy the girls beer. They won’t buy juice for $20.” But as the Board found out when they poured over Olsten’s voluminous report, the case also involved Club Chiemi allegedly buying cans of Coors Light retail, the possibility that the club owner overcharged one of the drunks by $873 and the accusation that Olsten himself had “strong-armed” the club into giving the drunk his money back. Olsten denied the charge, but while checking out another hostess bar a month later, he ran into Nguyen and the drunk who supposedly got overcharged. “The whole thing doesn’t make sense to me,” Olsten wrote Silva and then-Chief Investigator Bill Pacheco. “Why would she be partying with him at this juncture?” Alas, we’ll never know, because Club Chiemi doesn’t exist anymore. “The licensee cancelled their license two days ago,” was Silva’s explanation to the Adjudication Board as to why his department was dropping the matter entirely. “The licensee is no longer a licensee.” Looking over the complaint, usually outspoken Board member Ron McOmber spoke up. “I can see why,” he said.

The Maui News reports that Maui Police Officer Aaron K. F. Won has been arraigned for allegedly “demanding sexual favors” from a 27-year-old Honokowai woman he stopped back in July. When the woman refused, he allegedly arrested her and took her to the Napili substation—an unmanned, unsecured office usually reserved for handling paperwork. Once there, Won allegedly wasted no time getting down to brass tacks. “The officer asked the victim to perform sex acts,” said Maui Police Chief Tom Phillips during a press conference yesterday. Because the woman was Hispanic and spoke little English, Phillips said Won used hand gestures to get his point across. Now the idea of a rogue cop using his badge to take advantage of women is scary as all hell and it’s refreshing that Phillips is moving very quickly and publicly on this, but hand gestures? Awww yeaaahhh… The county Planning Department announces that it wants way more of the old Pioneer Mill preserved than simply the smokestack offered by Ka’anapali Development Corp. officials. COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

THURSDAY, AUG. 12 Prince Resorts Hawaii President George Ariyoshi announces that he’s retiring. The 78-year-old former governor and state legislator has been running Prince Resorts for the last 15 years. Prince has been pushing for a massive expansive of its Makena Resort on Maui, but the company runs hotels and golf courses for rich tourists all over the state. Now Ariyoshi is an old hand in state politics. A Democrat who often sided with Republicans and always gave landowners and developers more than a fair shake, Ariyoshi spent more than 30 years in Hawaii state government, from 1954 to 1986. In that time he served for 16 years in the state legislature, three years as lieutenant governor and 13 years as governor—the first Japanese-American to hold the post. In that time, he never once lost an election… Bu La’ia is free! He’s free! Okay, he’s kinda free. Comedian, ex-Maui Tacos radio spot voice and current Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee candidate Shawn Kaui Hill just got himself acquitted of charges that he attacked his wife—mostly due to the fact that Dane Hill, his wife, said during the trial that she actually attacked her husband. This differs slightly from the story of him strangling, punching and throwing her to the ground that she told Maui Police officers immediately after the Jan. 8 incident. But charges stemming from a Nov. 18, 2003 incident involving Hill allegedly attacking Maui Humane Society personnel with a pickax are still pending.

FRIDAY, AUG. 13

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

In a move that stunned even developer Kent Smith, the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii has tabled the

controversial proposed Pu’unoa Village. Their reason: new information has come to light! Now look, no one’s criticized Smith’s ostensible “affordable housing” project more than this paper—Pu’unoa promises far more actual affordable homes than it will deliver, it will cause ungodly traffic snarls in West Maui and the land it will sit on most likely already belongs to Hawaiian families whose interests are, to put it mildly, being bulldozed—but pulling all this last second Perry Mason delay nonsense is lame. If they’re going to cancel this guy’s show, then they need to do it. Or if they’re going to repeat their mistake from last year and give Smith a free pass, then just do that… The Maui News is reporting today that two women saw a snake in Hana! It could be the mythical Big Snake foretold by the ancients! Or it could just be a snake some jerk-off dumped in the rainforest. Anyway, the women told a state Department of Land and Natural Resources Rapid Response Team (DLNRRRT, I guess) that the snake was green, about three feet long and trying to cross Hana Highway near Haneoo and Hamoa when they saw it. The women—both Hana residents— said they tried but failed to kill the snake by driving over it with their car. Now that’s great. A snake that can’t be killed by a normal automobile is roaming free in East Maui.

SATURDAY, AUG. 14 Six thousand people show up to see Grammy Award-winning Rick James buried in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. The announcement in today’s Maui News says simply, “An autopsy has failed to determine what caused the singer’s death.” I can’t think of a better epitaph… The Maui News reports that the Maui County Salary Commission wants to nearly double the County Council’s salaries, from $44,000 a year to between $65,000 and $85,000 a year. Oh yeah, that’s fair.

SUNDAY, AUG. 15 Talked with Aaron Huish of the Boys and Girls Club of West Maui. Every weekend they’ve been going out and picking up the cigarette butts that you folks have been so helpfully dropping on the ground. A week ago, Huish said the kids walked up and down Shaw Street in Lahaina, from the highway to Front Street. On that stretch of road—which takes about 15 seconds to traverse if you’re driving like an old coot—Huish said the kids picked up 1,287 butts, the vast majority of which were at the Moku’ula parking lot. This weekend they pulled in just 653 over at Library Park. Guess library patrons just don’t smoke as much as they used to. Huish said the kids are saving the butts, which they’ll stuff into a giant plastic cylinder and submit to the Art for Trash exhibit at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center this fall.

MONDAY, AUG. 16 The Maui News gives the rundown on the Sierra Club Hawaii’s Environmental Scorecard. The top Maui County officials were Democrats—6th District State Senator J. Kalani English and 13th District State Representative Sol Kaho’ohalahala. Their pro-environment voting and actions earned them 92 percent ratings. But this being Maui, that’s pretty much the end of Democratic Party’s infatuation with green matters. Democrats like 5th District State Senator Rosalyn Baker and 4th District State Senator Shan Tsutsui scored a merely adequate 77 and 62 percent, respectively. In fact, that 62 percent score was so mediocre that Republicans like 12th District State Representative Kika Bukoski and 11th District State Representative Chris Halford both topped it, with 75 and 69 scores, respectively.

TUESDAY, AUG. 17 State biologists still haven’t found that Hana snake, though they’re now saying it’s probably a brown tree snake. They also said they’ll search until they capture the beast, or three weeks pass, in which case they’ll give up and go home. Now that’s dogged! MTW

OVERHEARD... “WE’RE GOING TO KIMO’S NEXT, BUT I’M NOT WEARING ANY UNDERWEAR, SO WE’LL PROBABLY GET KICKED OUT. SO I MIGHT BE COMING BACK HERE.”-Girl to friend at Pacific’O in Lahaina, Aug. 14

RIGHT CROSS EXAMINATION Vincent Morrissey’s police brutality lawsuit went to trial in New Haven, Conn., in 1997, and the alleged perp, West Haven police officer Ralph Angelo, was on the witness stand, claiming that Morrissey himself had provoked the encounter by swinging at Angelo. Morrissey’s attorney, openly skeptical of Angelo’s version of the incident, asked Angelo to demonstrate to the jury just how hard Morrissey had swung at him. Before the lawyer could clarify what he meant by “demonstrate,” Officer Angelo popped the lawyer on the chin, staggering him and forcing an immediate recess.

OFFICIAL BUSINESS In Milwaukee in 1997, Gary Arthur Medrow, 53, was charged with 24 counts of impersonating a police officer in connection with his unique obsession. What Medrow does, according to police (who have arrested him various times over the last 30 years for the same thing), is telephone a woman and try to convince her to lift another person in the room and carry her or him a short distance, sometimes telling the woman that he’s a police officer and that it’s an official request.

ONLY-IN-CALIFORNIA RAGE Ms. Cathomas Starbird, a member of the Sausalito, California school board, was sentenced to 15 days in jail in 1999 for assaulting a female friend who had joined her and her husband to celebrate the husband’s birthday. At the couple’s houseboat after dinner, Ms. Starbird became furious at her friend, jumped on her, and bit her on the face because she had refused to engage in oral sex with the husband.

Ronnie Darnell Bell, 30, was arrested in Dallas in 1998 and charged with attempting, all alone, to rob the Federal Reserve Bank. (In the movie Die Hard With a Vengeance, knocking off the New York Federal Reserve Bank required a small army of men and truckloads of weapons.) According to police, Bell was initially confused because there were no tellers, so he handed a security guard his note, reading, “This is a bank robbery of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, of Dallas, Texas, give me all the money. Thank you, Ronnie Darnell Bell.” The guard pushed a silent alarm while an oblivious Bell chatted amiably, revealing to the guard that only minutes earlier he had tried to rob a nearby Postal Service office but that “they threw me out.”

When doubts start to arise about one of the fascists’ more ambitious moves, like Hitler’s 1936 annexation of Austria, they launch a bigger, more ambitious gambit—say, the 1938 Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia. Unlike plodding democracies, fascism’s dynamism denies its subjects the time to digest, much less react. Blitzkrieg against Poland in 1939 made it pointless to protest the relatively bloodless absorption of the Czechs. Invading the colossal USSR in 1940 made Poland seem relatively minor. Fascism is politics as entertainment: bigger, bawdier, and—as with the invasion of Russia—ultimately doomed when it overreaches. Things are a bit trickier for our Texas-grown dictator, George W. Bush, burdened as he is by our annoying insistence on forcing him to run for the office he stole fair and square. Now that the invasion of Iraq has been universally acknowledged as an unjustifiable, counterproductive distraction from a war on terror that has yet to begin, Bush needs a still bigger war to distract us. Then, he figures, we’ll forget about Iraq the way Iraq made us forget about Afghanistan. North Korea is too dangerous and Syria is too small to do the job. But there’s always Iran. The Bush Administration began test-marketing a war against Iran by naming it as a charter member of the Axis of Evil. But for the moment, electioneering to an alert-jittery electorate has forced the Bushies to place their neo-fascist tendencies in a lockbox. Bush and Cheney are deploying hoary Republican rhetorical ploys—referring to John Kerry as a flip-flopping limousine liberal may harken to such classic GOP candidacies as Dole ‘96 and Reagan ‘80, but the war criminals of Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib are playing the role of traditional Republicans only to close the deal on a gullible electorate. Now Administration gofer Colin Powell is accusing Iran of—you guessed it—trying to acquire weapons of mass

There is nothing easy or logical about parking your car in Lahaina’s historic district. People who work in the town’s numerous shops and restaurants have to compete with the visitors for a place to stow their car. Some lots fill up fast while others—sometimes just yards away—will stay empty all day. The most convenient spots—on Front Street—are free, yet parking in a lot on one of the side streets will cost you $5. At those lots, private security guards issue official-looking “parking tickets” for cars left too long in the lot. Tourists hurriedly pay them but most locals just throw them away. One restaurant may have no monthly parking fees to pay, while one next door could fork over a couple thousand dollars. It’s enough to disillusion anyone who’s just driven 15, 20 miles to get to Lahaina only to find parking about as accessible as a hooker in church. For people who have to do this three, four or five times a week because they work on the West Side, it’ll take its toll. “People can’t afford to live in West Maui, so they live in Kahului and drive to work, but then they can’t afford to park,” said Theo Morrison, executive director of the Lahaina Town Action Committee, which has spent years studying the parking situation. “Everything is backwards: the most convenient parking is on the street, and it’s free. Parking in lots on Dickenson or other places is not so convenient, and it costs money. People should pay for convenience.” Lording over it all is Section 19.36 of the Maui County Code. It states, in part, that each and every business on Maui must come up with its plan for dealing with parking. And the code is very specific—the number of parking stalls each owner must provide depends on the type of business and building square footage. Because of the high traffic they bring in, restaurants have the highest stall requirements. According to data compiled by the Lahaina Town Action Committee (LAC) a couple years ago, there are slightly less

This claim check comes from the lot on Papalaua St.—the one that includes the recreated Hawaiian village. People parked here all will pay a dozen bucks to get their car out. Located near the north end of Lahaina Town the lot isn’t nearly as convenient as parking on Front St. itself, which is free.

Instead of the county or even Lahaina Town itself, all revenues from this parking ticket go to the shopping center that owns the lot. All efforts to get parking revenues placed in a public fund for future parking lot construction and maintenance have so far led nowhere.

Lots do on occasion tow cars parked for too long, but usually only after repeated violations. It’s far easier—and cheaper—for the lot attendants to write “tickets” that look official enough for tourists to pay without hesitation. Failing that, lot owners aren’t shy about fitting the “boot” to offending cars.

Phantom Parking Is there hope for your car in Lahaina? than 1,000 parking stalls spread out through two dozen lots—some of which are free—and street locations. But according to the provisions of County Code Section 19.36, the town requires more than 2,000 stalls.

That is, assuming Section 19.36 works best for Lahaina. The law, which is straightforward enough, was written for towns like Kahului and Wailuku—spread out, low-density areas that require people to drive from place to place. If you open your business in one of those towns, satisfying the law is simply going to the county planning department and showing your little drawing of where you’ll put in your parking stalls and then the planning official signs you off and you’re done. But Lahaina Town is different. Because of the town’s high density and historic nature, it’s all but impossible for a new business to construct its own parking stalls. Since they still have to comply with Code 19.36, they have no choice but to go to one of the many private parking lots located throughout Lahaina Town and ask to lease the stalls. The rates can run up to $100, $150 a week. Over a year, that adds up to $5,000 in parking fees—fees comparable businesses elsewhere in the county don’t have to pay. The trick here—and the reason people use the phrase

“phantom parking”—is that the businesses have no exclusive right to the stalls they lease. Code 19.36 very specifically requires that all businesses have the stalls clearly marked as their own, but few actually do. In fact, judging by the number of businesses, every stall in Lahaina Town has been leased at least once. And, since a number of Lahaina Town businesses predate Code 19.36, not everyone has to pay. For instance, the restaurants Kimo’s and Moose McGillycuddy’s are grandfathered in and pay nothing. Pioneer Inn pays about $500 a month to lease 5 stalls, but David Paul’s pays $2,175 a month to lease 15 or so. Planet Hollywood, which closed in 2002, paid an astonishing $5,000 a month to lease the 50 stalls in the lot directly behind it. Though the Lahaina Boat Harbor brings in something like 3,000 to 4,000 people per day, it’s completely exempt from the parking law. And, according to the local and public officials I spoke with, some businesses chose not to pay at all. That’s because once a business gets its parking plan signed off, it doesn’t deal with the county again on parking. They don’t keep any records beyond your initial compliance and they don’t come checking up on you. “There’s no enforcement,” said Councilwoman Joanne Johnson, who represents West Maui. “People make the argument that development pays for itself. No, it does not!”

This lot provides two hours of parking free with validation from one of the nearby shops or restaurants. Considering that all the tickets are time-stamped, there’s no reason—other than trying to get people to spend money—for the validation requirement.

This is one of the better lots in Lahaina Town, in that it has actual attendants. Most lots in town are automated, meaning people are at the mercy of a machine that spits out a receipt after feeding the requisite bills. Broken machine or not, security guys are ruthless in writing tickets for cars that don’t have a receipt on the dashboard.

The use of the word “owner” is funny, given how many rentals are found in Lahaina Town parking lots each day. But many locals—the restaurant servers, bartenders and shop clerks who cater to the tourists’ needs—have to park, too. Surveys conducted by Lahaina Town Action Committee show that employers rarely pay for employee parking—the idea is ludicrous on its face, since shop owners would be paying double for spaces—but that leaves employees to scavenge free parking wherever they can find it. This includes Front St. itself, where the use of a space by an employee could rob local business of hundreds of dollars in revenue each day.

Breaking Down the Lahaina Town Parking Situation 10

AUGUST 19, 2004

COVER STORY

As it stands now, the thousands of dollars Lahaina Town restaurants and shops pay in parking leases goes to private lot operators like Aloha, Republic and Diamond—companies that are making very good money. “I see over and over the flattening of beautiful old houses and turning them into parking lots,” said Johnson. “They’re destroying the whole character and ambience of downtown Lahaina.” Of course, this can’t keep happening—tearing down houses now and building lots will provide a short term solution, but over the long term will eliminate the reason so many people visit the West Side. Which will solve the parking problem, but it’s not a solution local business owners like to contemplate. “Nothing positive happens to the money now,” said George Watson, regional manager of Moose McGillycuddy’s on Front St. “We need to get it back in front of the public. All [the law] is really doing is putting money in the pockets of the parking lot owners. It should be used to create parking that we lack. It just doesn’t feel right to pay somebody for spaces that are already full.” Watson is a passionate, if unlikely spokesman for the parking lobby. “Personally, we’re grandfathered in,” he told me one morning at his restaurant. “We have no parking requirement whatsoever. The parking lot owners are not bad guys, but… [if things continue] we’re going to lose our tourist base. We do great local business for breakfast, great local business for late night, but almost no local business for dinner. The reason is [locals] don’t want to deal with parking. They’re not going to want to keep paying.” Attempts to rationalize that fact date back nearly a decade. In fact, as far back as 1996 the county formed a group of local business-owners and community members. It was, locals remember, a “big deal.” Calling themselves the “Lahaina Historic District Task Force,” the group came up with four general recommendations on how to rationalize the town’s parking situation. The group’s ideas ranged from installing signs throughout the town identifying the 18 existing parking lots, designating a portion of new lots for local employee use only and altering the bus traffic near the Banyan Tree. None of those plans have ever gone into effect. But the Task Force also wrote a fivepoint proposed ordinance altering Chapter 19.36 of the county code. “Historic Districts I and II are unique places and therefore they should have their own parking ordinance,” was how the law was to begin. “Lahaina is a walking town, and the parking ordinance should reflect this. Ample, accessible, safe, attractive, affordable parking for employees, residents and visitors is indispensable to the

economic vitality of Lahaina.” The proposed law then mandated the creation of a special “Lahaina Historic Districts Parking Fund.” Rather than paying money to privately held parking lot operators, Lahaina shops and restaurants would pay a month parking fee to a special fund that county officials would then spend on Lahaina parking needs. Consider it a “cash in-lieu-of parking” fund. “[The] Fund would be used to acquire, build, improve, and maintain county parking lots,” read the proposed ordinance. “Funds would also be used to acquire, maintain and operate a shuttle bus from future satellite parking lots into Lahaina Town.” In a move that surprised many, county corporation counsel attorneys began working on the proposed ordinance. They worked slowly, but they worked. By 2000, they had a draft ready for the Lahaina Town Action Committee to read and then make those bold and underline additions or cross-out deletions that you typically find in legal statutes.

Corporation Counsel attorneys had basically left the ordinance as the Task Force first envisioned it, including all the aspects of the cash-in-lieu-of parking fund. Such a fund would “foster better urban design by sitting parking lots and structures where they have the least impact on the physical and built environment” as well as “encourage the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings.” By 2001, the Lahaina Town Action Committee had gone over the proposed law and made its changes. But then, as had happened so much in the past, nothing happened. The law, one Lahaina community activist recalled, just went into that “endless black hole” that seems to swallow all local parking ideas and plans.

Solutions vary from short-term fixes like adding new lots to visionary plans to removing virtually all automobile traffic from the Front Street area. Talk of converting the scary old Pioneer Mill into a giant parking garage is just talk—officials with property owner Ka’anapali Development Corporation have said they’ll likely put commercial and residential uses on the site once they knock down the mill. “It’s so frustrating,” said one longtime community activist. “It never goes anywhere.” The use of the word “frustrating” surprised Don Couch. For the last year, Couch has sat in on the West Maui Advisory Committee as official representative of Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa. He’s also running against incumbent Roz Baker for control over the 5th District State Senate seat. “No one has come [to Advisory Committee monthly meetings] to speak about parking,” said Couch. “It’s a huge issue, but unfortunately things don’t happen as fast as people would like.” Couch said the county is working on acquiring new lots, as well as eventually, hopefully, running a trolley service between lots and Front St. Some locals envision Lahaina Town as eventually something like Santa Barbara—a seaside town on California’s central coast. There, the best parking isn’t along State Street, the major thoroughfare, but in a variety of parking garages located on side streets. The garages only start charging for parking after a car has been there 90 minutes. But that’s far in the future. Indeed, people like Watson see the whole of Lahaina decaying if some logic isn’t introduced into the town’s parking situation. “We’re not as unique as we used to be,” he said. “I think the view that ‘tourists expect to pay’ is bullshit. My personal goal is to make Lahaina more parking-friendly. It’s good for business.” MTW

Michael Feil

Southern Style Cuisine

“A Taste of the South with a Tropical Flair”

Live Jazz & Dancing 760 S. KIHEI RD • KIHEI • 874-8385

Executive chef, Michael Feil Catering Good food runs in my family. I learned to cook from my grandparents, and today, have prepared fine food for more than 20 years. With a degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, I’ve worked in restaurants and resorts from Idaho to California, Aspen to Alaska. I always chose restaurants that allowed me to be creative. One of my favorites was the Pine Creek Cook House in Aspen, a restaurant you could only get to by cross country skis or a horse-drawn sled. There, I catered a lot of weddings and parties for celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Dave Matthews, Paul Simon, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Douglas and more. When I came back to Maui, I opened my own catering business, serving food for many yoga retreats, self-help groups and workshops. I’ve catered well over 100 weddings, and together with my sister, photographer Monique Feil, can offer complete wedding packages. I used to be big into cooking meat. Basically, if it walked or squirmed, I cooked it. Today, I enjoy creating more vegetarian, vegan and local fish dishes—food that satisfies the senses, feeds the body and uplifts the spirit. Instead of importing ingredients, I use the bounty of Maui for my Pacific Rim fusion cuisine. The trick is finding local purveyors of the top ingredients—the best organic produce, the finest herbs, the freshest local fish. I stay in touch with what is in season locally, building flavors with stocks using fresh herbs and spices, choose good quality oils, and harmonize tastes, textures and colors. My most popular dishes include Mahi stuffed with shitake mushrooms, wrapped in banana leaves and served over a Red Thai Curry, and the Mango and Brie Quesadillas, toasted in warm spinach tortillas. I connect with people through food. It gives me a chance to make people instantly happy, and sometimes even change their perspective on eating differently. Food has changed my outlook on how to live well, and I’m glad to know I can make a positive change while doing what I love to do. MTW

Paint the Town Red Saturday, 11 a.m. ‘til close at the SandBar [MUSIC FESTIVAL] On Aug. 20, 2003, the SandBar & Grill opened its doors on Hana Hwy. in Paia. The good people of the SandBar were so anxious, so eager, so chomping at the bit with excitement to show off their freshly painted location that would soon house nightly live entertainment and their beach cuisine style menu featuring lobster tacos, that they might’ve opened the doors a little too soon. You see, their freshly painted red chairs were not yet dry. So when the hordes of anxious, eager, excited customers pummeled their way in to sit down on one of these aforementioned chairs—more than one bottom was affected. It was a virtual Red Ass Attack, if you will. But all was not in vain, as the SandBar has now been successfully sourcing the North Shore for a year and in an all-day anniversary celebration, will be treating many of those same red buttocks to live music, free pupus and drink specials. The bands and musicians will include such local luminaries as Trevor Jones, Head High, DJ Alf, NDE, John Moore Project, Fine Line, Koa Puna Treasure Run and Crazy Fingers. There’ll also be a Chicks With Sticks fashion show and if you wear your red rump pants from last year’s Grand Opening, you’ll get in free! Woo-hoo! Not only that, but this tremendous event is also a benefit to support the Paia Youth Center & Skate Park. And hey, if you can’t paint your derriere red for the kids, what good are ya?! ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Vediamo, Mama George Winston is This Week! Ci Friday & Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 6 p.m. at Iao Theater Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC

[MUSIC] Yes, this Friday features one of the most popular solo contemporary instrumentalists of our time! George Winston and his piano, guitar and harmonica have won major Grammys, blending R&B, jazz, blues, rock and even Slack Key. And in one of the best press release descriptions of a performance I’ve ever seen, Winston’s PR says that he “will take us on a musical journey from The Doors to the Velveteen Rabbit, perhaps with a little Frank Zappa and Dr. Longhair along for the ride.” Groovy! Also, non-perishable food donations will be accepted at the show for Maui’s Food Bank. Tickets range from $10 to $27, call 242-7469.

Screening South Asia Thursday through Sunday, 7 p.m. at Maui Dream Inn [FILM FESTIVAL] A special screening of The Traveling Film South Asia 2004 Festival featuring the Best of the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival will come to the Maui Dream Inn at 1592 Mill Street in Wailuku. They’ll also be serving South Asian cuisine and featuring live country music by Steve Zuwala. Tickets can be purchased at Borders or call 986-0333.

[THEATER] About this production, local playwright Brian Peoples says, “It’s my original play about a mentally challenged teenage boy with a troubled home life. His mother is an alcoholic who is involved with an abusive, biker-style boyfriend. A gay concerned neighbor, dying from AIDS, takes notice and befriends the boy, assisting him to independence.” As this is a “mature, coming of age story” that contains adult subject matter, it is not suitable for all ages. Consider yourself warned. It is also a non-profit event, with all proceeds benefiting Women Helping Women and Maui AIDS. You can purchase tickets in advance for $15 at Café Marc Aurel in Wailuku or call 242-6600.

Nuffsedd CD Release

Entity Bye-Bye

Saturday, 10 p.m. at Casanova

Saturday, 5-10 p.m. at Baldwin Beach Park

Iz & Ivy: A DJ Decision

[MUSIC] And so it is that our little hardcore rock/metal band Entity are off to college. Albeit, in Las Vegas—yeehaw! We wish them well and everything, but I can’t help feeling like one of those teary-eyed women at the dock, waving farewell to her sea-faring sailor. Anyway, this bon voyage rock-out gathering will also feature Gomega, Rubber Bandz, Corpsef*#!ker and Khrinj. Free.

[MUSIC] You’ve heard the song “Cherry Bomb” over and over and yet, you’re still aching to hear it again! Word is that Maui’s own Nuffsedd sounds even better live so go check ‘em out as they celebrate the release of their latest CD, Open Doors to Strangers. And according to KCCN FM100, it is currently the #1 selling album in the state of Hawaii! Shoots, cuz! Go get ‘em!!

Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s (DJ Iz/Joshua); at Casanova (DJ Ivy) [MUSIC] A DJ here, a DJ there… Where to go? While Joshua (Iz) is a Chicago-born DJ and producer from SF since ’87, Ivy is from Denver, CO focused on breakbeat tempos. Hapa’s will also feature the Love & Light dancers, and visual poetry by Haidai and Kitten. Casanova also features special guest DJ Modika, who is Universal Mix-Maui’s first female DJ, and somebody named Marcel’s Birthday Bash, as well as visuals by Haidai. Hmm, if this Haidai person can be at two places at the same time, well then goshdarn it, so can I! Decision no more!

Predators once ruled mankind and used humans as incubators for breeding “the ultimate prey.” It seems that every 100 years, the Predators square off against the same Jai Laiheaded Aliens that Sigourney Weaver battled so bravely, in order to affect a self-imposed form of Darwinism. Writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat) lays out the sloppy narrative background as half-baked window dressing for the video game acid bloodletting that must occur. Anderson endears the audience to the Predator side of the battle by establishing a faulty logic that states, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” This enables Alexa to team up with one of the tall Predator Rasta killing machines while using the hollowed-out skull of an Alien as a shield as the unlikely duo fight a slew of the double-jawed Aliens. As a genre, the newly developed sci-fi slasher video game movie demonstrates a limited scope geared specifically toward audiences wanting to take a break from their X-Boxes long enough to savor similar action battles on a big screen. Alien vs. Predator is remarkable primarily for its competent rendering of H.R. Giger’s grotesque Alien monsters. Anderson overuses obligatory close-up shots of the horrific Alien teeth coming within inches of Alexa’s face, but it’s such a potent image that it still packs a punch of anxiety regardless of how many times it’s used. Somebody needs a Kleenex When our hero Predator slices an Alien head in half exposing a cavern of green goo, it’s a This spectacle fueled Sci-Fi thriller is all deeply satisfying moment for the conditioned bark and no bite. MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA Saturday, August 21 What the #$*! Do We Know?! 2, 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Generating enough buzz to equal the roar of 1,000 beehives at its recent Maui Film Festival screenings, this sympathetic exploration of mysticism and the quantum physics that underlies the seeming reality of everyday life finally returns to Maui for its encore. If the words of the poet Rumi, healer Deepak Chopra or physicist Fritof Capra resonate for you, this one-of-a-kind modern Alice-in-Wonderland-like story starring Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin is just your "tea cup" (pun intended). Unrated. 108 min.

Wednesday, August 25 Seducing Mr. Lewis 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Earning more Genie Nominations (Canada's Oscar®)—12 in all—than the recent Maui Film Festival favorite The Barbarian Invasions, this Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Award winning comedy, reminiscent of Waking Ned Devine and The Full Monty, is the beguiling story of a ragtag fishing community on a tiny, impoverished island who must persuade a young Montreal-based doctor to live in their town in order to get a muchneeded new factory. "Its terrific cast kept making me laugh out loud" (Wall Street Journal). In French with English subtitles. Unrated. 108 min.

New This Week EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING - (R) - Horror This prequel to one of the most memorable horror films of all time—hello, green pea soup!—Exorcist: The Beginning follows the journey of Father Merrin (Stellan Skarsgåard) back to his first encounter with demonic forces in post-WW II Africa. Scary, scary antics ensue. Creepy, creepy cinematics will terrify and delight. Here’s hoping, anyway. OPEN WATER - (R) - Thriller – This one’s real simple: Couple goes on vacation, goes scuba diving, couple gets left behind, floats for two hours in the middle of the ocean while sharks and other scary things get closer and closer. It’s tough to say anything more without giving away the ending, but what do you think would happen to a couple left out there all by their lonesome? Stars Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis. WITHOUT A PADDLE - (PG13) - Comedy Think Deliverance, but not as funny. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard play three guys who take a canoe into the Oregon wilderness looking for treasure but finding dangerous hunters, hippie chicks, wild rapids and some crazy old coot played by Burt Reynolds who starred in, among other movies, Deliverance.

Now Showing A CINDERELLA STORY - PG - Teen/Romantic Comedy - Another fable-filled fantasy about a super cute and really nice high school chick (Hilary Duff) who is tortured by her tacky stepmom and catty, low-self-esteem-compensating, jealous stepsisters, while she covets her online Prince Charming, the popular quarterback with a secret sensitive side. Yeah, right. Will he find the cell phone she left behind just before the clock strikes midnight? ALIEN VS. PREDATOR - PG13 - The iconic monsters from the two franchises battle each other on Earth for the first time on film, as they have in the comic-book world. The discovery of an ancient pyramid buried in Antarctica sends a team of scientists and adventurers to the frozen continent. There, they make an even more terrifying discovery: two alien races enaged in an ultimate battle. See Film Critique. THE BOURNE SUPREMACY - (PG13) Action/Adventure - Think James Bond, but pissed off in a Fugitive kind of way. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon at his emotionally emptiest) is an ex-

American assassin who’s tired of killing foreign leaders and just wants to live with this German girlfriend (Franka Potente) in peace. But his former employer isn’t too keen on the retirement plans. Yeah, that was pretty much the first movie, Bourne Identity, but who cares. Also stars Brian Cox and Julia Stiles. CAT WOMAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Halle Berry stars in the telling of the popular DC Comics anti-heroine of a lady in a tight, black, leather bodysuit. The story of Catwoman starts with a rather timid woman who, by twist of fate, is granted the amazing powers of the feline—self-cleaning and mouse-catching notwithstanding. She also encounters villains and villainesses (here, deliciously portrayed by Sharon Stone), as well as a complicated love interest (the always yummy Benjamin Bratt!). But hey, let’s face it, this movie is all about the cat suit anyway, right? COLLATERAL - (R) - Crime/Thriller - This Michael Mann film stars Jamie Foxx as a washed-up comedy writer-turned cabbie and Tom Cruise as a pontificating assassin. The movie takes place over one night as Foxx drives Cruise around from hit to hit. People get killed, Foxx delivers a few one-liners, and then everyone looks slick and stylish as they chase each other through L.A. Also stars Jada Pinkett-Smith. HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (PG13) - Comedy - A corporate dude (John Cho) and his medical school pal (Kal Penn) smoke a lot of pot one night and then decide to drive through late night New Jersey searching for White Castle hamburgers, which are these little square hamburgers they sell on the East Coast that are supposed to be really good but are, in fact, too small and bland to provide any real sustenance. Anyhoo, hilarity ensues, which is unusual because the guy who played Doogie Howser co-stars as himself. I, ROBOT - PG-13 - Science Fiction/Adventure - This Will Smith vehicle is set far enough in the future when thousands of creepy human-looking robots can talk and walk around and go to the mall and stuff and everyone doesn’t get all freaked out over it. Based on sci-fi author Isaac Asimov’s classic collection of short stories of the same name, the movie follows Smith’s detective character as he tries to prove a robot violated its basic programming and willingly committed a crime. Also stars hottie Bridget Moynahan. KING ARTHUR - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Mix one part Braveheart with one part Pearl Harbor, stir in a few handfuls of foolishness and sprinkle with stereotypical characters and you get this giant Jerry Bruckheimer “history” picture. It’s got a boatload of knights running around with plenty of swords and bows and arrows to keep the kiddies happy, but none of the pesky blood and gore that used to sluice down so many a medieval gutter. With Clive Owen and Keira Knightley. LITTLE BLACK BOOK - (PG13) - Comedy/Romance - Brittany Murphy stars as an associate producer for a daytime talk show who gets frustrated when her boyfriend (Ron Livingston) won’t talk about his past relationships. Geez, usually you can’t get them to shut up about them! Anyway, using the show’s resources, she seeks out and interviews his exes and typically, finds out more than she wanted to. Dumb, dumb girl. MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE - R - Political Thriller Denzel Washington plays an American Gulf War vet whose strange dreams a decade after the war ended lead him to believe he and his squad were kidnapped and brainwashed as part of some conspiracy to take over the U.S. government. Hey, wait, that sounds familiar. Oh yeah, it was this other movie called… The Manchurian Candidate, starring Frank Sinatra and that woman from Murder, She Wrote. I loved that film. You people suck. Also starring Liev Schreiber and Meryl Streep. THE NOTEBOOK - (PG13) - Drama/Romance Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the bestselling Nicolas Sparks novel of the same name, if the preview to this movie didn’t darn near choke you up, you probably should just forget about it. It’s a love story recollected by an older man (James Garner) and woman (Gena Rowlands) about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who were tragically separated. What happened to them? Go see the movie. But first, hand me a tissue, will ya? THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2 - Romantic Comedy - G - After getting over the revelation that she is a princess and part of the royal family of the small and obscure European nation of Genovia (with a population of just 50,000), American teenager Mia (Annie Hathaway) moves to the actual country she represents, with her best friend, Lilly (Heather Matarazzo) tagging along

during summer vacation. As she learns the job of being a country's future ruler, one challenge she's faced with is the prospect of being set up in an arranged marriage. SHREK 2 - (PG) - Fantasy/Animation - So this green ogre (Mike Meyers) marries this princess (Cameron Diaz) and they live in a swamp with their talking donkey friend (Eddie Murphy). The princess’ parents happen to be the King (John Cleese) and Queen (Julie Andrews) of the land of Far Far Away and they’re pissed so the dad plots to have the ogre, Shrek, killed by a ferocious kitty—aka Puss ‘n Boots (Antonio Banderas)—in order to free up the princess to marry the Fairy Godmother’s son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who we all know doesn’t exist anyway so what the hell is she thinking?! SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). THUNDERBIRDS - PG - Action/Adventure - What is this, the season of unwanted remakes? How dare someone remake one of my favorite cartoons ever, with Liono and Snarf battling that evil mummy Mum-Ra… oh, wait, that was Thundercats. Oh yeah, Thunderbirds—that really, really long miniseries on that priest who gets it on that starred that guy who just came out of the closet. What was his name… Richard Crenna? Richard Harris? Richard Chamberlain! Yeah, why would someone want to… That was The Thornbirds? Oh. So what was the Thunderbirds? Some British 1960s puppet show where these guys flew around in bitchen spaceships and rescued people? Cool! Stars Bill Paxton, Ben Kingsley and a bunch of kids. THE VILLAGE - PG - Drama/Romance/Science Fiction/Fantasy/Thriller - Geez, throw in “Comedy” and it’s a film for everybody! And I thought it was just the latest creepy flick by M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs)! But I guess that’s where the “Romance” comes in. So this movie is about a village (hence the title) with a close-knit community (hence the “Drama”) who go through their normal routine, knowing that evil creatures reside in the surrounding forest (ahem, “Science FictionThriller”). There is one town rebel, though, who ventures into the woods and pisses every one off (oh, that’s gotta be Joaquin Phoenix!). Also stars William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Adrien Brody. WHITE CHICKS - (PG) - Comedy/Crime - To be honest, the only thing that might save this disaster waiting to happen is that the stars are Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Anyone else, and people would stay away in droves. The deal is that the Wayans brothers play two African-American FBI agents who figure the only way to protect two young white hotel empire heiresses is to dress in drag and cake their faces with white makeup. Just remember that you were warned. YU-GI-OH, THE MOVIE - (PG) - Science Fiction/Animation - After the conclusion of the Battle City Tournament, deep below the sands of Egypt, an ancient evil has awakened. Anubis, who was defeated centuries ago by Yugi's mysterious alter ego the ancient Pharaoh has returned for revenge. Wielding the power of the Eighth Millennium Item, Anubis is determined to destroy Yugi and take over the world.

He shot me an amused smile and winked. Clearly, he was enjoying this. “It’s a proven concept,” driver/owner Albert Monna said, chewing his sandwich. “Very successful, cuts down on drunk driving, people can have a good time and not have to drive.” In attendance on this particular night of debauchery were Katie, Steph, Amy, Magda, Tina, Lola, Ashley, Kristina, Heather, Marcy, Kimberly, Steph #2, Hannah, Brianne, Emily, Liz, Tina #2, Lauren, Crystal, Mary, Sharon and “George” a male blow-up doll who throughout the night was thrown into the air, punched, kissed, licked, thrown out the window of and forced to perform cunnilingus. Who is Tessa?

By Kellie R. Holliday

We were standing next to Da Party Buzz, in a loading zone of the Outrigger Hotel waiting for the bachelorette party that was long overdue. Suddenly, like two explorers in the jungles of Borneo hearing an advancing headhunting party, we heard the howling battle cry of a “Girls Night Out.” “Are you ready for the show?” the driver asked solemnly. Then he stomped out his cigarette and donned a red-and-white striped Cat in the Hat hat. As the brightly painted bus pulled up to the lobby of the hotel, a conga line of intoxicated women danced aboard, all eyeing me suspiciously. “Are you the bookkeeper?” one slurred, eyeing my notes as she stumbled into her seat. Frequently parked on Dairy Road in Kahului, Da Party Buzz is a cross between The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test and the Partridge Family tour bus. An eye-catching orange and white-striped Ford equipped with a state of the art stereo system, it also features strobe lights and a rainbow colored interior. Where the “stop” sign is on a normal school bus, a shaka shoots out at you. Nice touch. As the cavalcade of hair, perfume, lowrise jeans and high heels ascended onto the former school bus, the driver handed out maracas and leis from a huge black bag while simultaneously honking a gold bicycle horn. Honk-honk!

Tessa Lewis (Amanda Righetti) became a part of North Shore after a night of drunken karaoke. She was found the next morning in a trashed hotel suite asleep and shown out, despite her pleading that Roy would take care of it. That would be Roy, her con artist boyfriend. Stealing from rich tourists in hotels allows them to live a life of luxury. But Jason unwittingly comes to her rescue and sets her up with a job in housekeeping. Tessa has had run-ins with Roy more than once but says she’s determined to live a “clean” life—that is, right after she lies about being the new assistant concierge, ultimately saving the hotel and keeping her job. Tessa, the girl with the superb “sinister” look, knows how to handle men with money.

NOTICES

HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING

SIGNLANGUAGE LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

This week is going to suck. Not because anything bad will happen, per se. Quite the opposite; some very sweet things are likely to head your way. It’ll suck, rather, because the glare of the spotlight has already begun to seem too intense; you’re blistering under all this adoring attention—which lately resembles obsessive scrutiny—and there’s no escaping it, at least until the Sun retreats into Virgo at the very end of the week. Until that relief arrives, hang in there. Slather on some psychic sunblock, because it’s high noon of notoriety for one more week.

If you feel that you have been potentially exposed to HIV and would like Free, Confidential and Anonymous testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. It is important to know your HIV status so that you do not unknowingly pass the virus to others, also early detection is vital to your health and treatment.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Your first instinct is to swat at the buzzing insect the moment it comes within reach, before you’ve even had a chance to assess whether it’s actually a threat. That’s silly. Certainly notice it, and pay attention to what kind of bug it is, and what it’s up to. If it merits killing by your standards, destroy it regretfully, or with glee, whichever works. But notice that a lot of the little critters buzzing around you are nothing more than annoying—and some of them might even be beneficial. The same, naturally, is even more true of the human pests flitting around bothering you. Some of them could be doing you more good than harm; consider that before unilaterally squashing all of them.

SEEKING ATTRACTIVE FEMALE Handsome 40 year old male with great sense of humor seeks female 25-40 for sharing dinner dates, movies & fun. 579-8420 PREGNANT AND ALONE? We can help! Maui Lawn Works

Gingerly peel off your clothing after today’s bad sunburn. Take a cool bath. Smear yourself with aloe (or better yet, get somebody to tenderly do it for you). You’ve been overexposed to a normally beneficent influence, and you got burnt. Now you’ve got to deal with that—mostly by staying away from that scorching entity, which you’re currently ultra-sensitized to. If you can manage to keep your distance for a week or so, you should be alright; your skin may not even peel. If, however, you can’t logistically excuse yourself from the nuclear asshole who did this to you, do your best to insulate yourself, prepare to lose at least your outer skin, and hang on ‘til next week, when some cloud cover should help you out.

For more information on HIV/AIDS, STD’s including Viral Hepatitis and HIV Counseling and Testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. In Hana call 248-7801, Lanai 5656722, and Molokai 553-9086.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Pluto, your ruling planet—a distant, surly, and slow-moving (from our perspective, anyway) ball of ice, is about to reverse direction and start going forwards again, for the first time since late last winter. You probably won’t even notice; your filters are stronger than Pluto’s astrological influence; that is, if you’re determined to see things as bad, or good, the subtle differences about to occur won’t change that. What I’m driving at is that if you’re immune to this faint sway (which is actually going to make things slightly easier, or more simple) what other delicate (yet important) nuances and signals might you be missing? Look around and see if you can pick them up.

A public health message provided by The Maui AIDS Foundation.

SINGING TELEGRAMS

“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) When you were a kid, you were so proud when Mom mounted your drawings on the fridge. But at some point, you started applying standards to your work, and preventing its dissemination unless it met them. That’s all well and good; the kind of crap most kids produce is cute, and worthy of admiration, coming from them. But from an adult it’s mostly pathetic. Still, I mention this because your standards, consequently, are way too high. You’ve long since graduated from stick figures and primary colors. What you’re putting out now is actually pretty damn good—and we want to see it. Show it us, please. We’ll give you a smiley face and a gold star, if it helps.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Most of the time you’re a diligent recycler. You’re one of the few people you know who even tries to correctly sort the trash. So I’m confused why you wouldn’t bother to kind of go through this huge bin of people and situations you’re simply tossing out the window. There are lots of reusable bits and bobs in there with all the junk you should by all rights be getting rid of. This baby-with-the-bathwater strategy is understandable, considering some of the fucked-up shit and venomous critters floating in said bathwater. But, come on. Save the baby.

You’re so focused on the big ideas and the grand dramatic gestures at times that you forget the little shit. What you ought to remember is that the little shit is often what makes life good. For example, for me the little shit takes the form of the expensive shampoo and conditioner rather than the cheap stuff, fresh strawberries in my cereal, and a cold beer on a hot day. You go to much greater lengths and expense to enact such minor improvements on your day-to-day life, when you could achieve far greater (if more subtle) effects with just a few bucks and an ounce of self-indulgence. Try it. You’ll like it.

Maui Time Weekly accepts credit cards for classified and display ads

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You can talk yourself into (or out of) anything—and that’s what gets you in trouble. You shouldn’t have to convince yourself of anything this week. You either know it in your gut, or you don’t. Quell internal arguments quickly, as they’ll only confuse you and get you so twisted around that you won’t know anymore which way was the right one. Rationalizations are fucking bullshit. Abstain from their tempting gray areas. Things are either black or white right now—or at the very least compelling and relatively unequivocal shades of grey. You don’t need to entertain lengthy debates. Just do what you’ve got to do, with a minimum of deliberation.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You might regard yourself as sovereign of your very own micronation, but until you meet the standards described in the Montevideo Convention [a permanent population, defined borders, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states (and therefore earn their recognition)], you’re nothing but a pretend monarch ruling a fiefdom in your own head. Having a vivid internal mythology is healthy, and a hell of a lot of fun. But why stop there? You can certainly make particular key elements of it dramatically real, should you choose to, and this would be a good week to try.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

$375,000

Even the dog can figure out some basic cues. For instance, when I’m still naked and wandering around my apartment in the morning, he knows there’s no chance of us going out; he doesn’t even bother getting up until I’ve put on pants, and shoes. Then he starts lobbying for a walk when it might actually do him some good. In other words, he gets it: Timing is everything. You should get it, too. You want what you want now. It’s understandable. What’s hard to wrap your head around is that you simply can’t have it now, but you can have it later. You just have to learn to choose your moment better than you have been. Work on that this week.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Not a huge fan of the Olympics? Well, you should be. They’re rife with examples of determined people who possess incredible focus (and yes, sponsors and patrons). You could benefit from emulating their example, as your chief failing right now is a lack of focus (not just sponsors and patrons, which you could use as well). You do so many things well that it almost doesn’t seem worthwhile to put in the kind of time it would take to become great at any one of them. However, should you choose to shift your status from Jill-of-all-Trades to Master-of-One, this would be an excellent week to start—but not finish. This kind of race is no 100-meter dash. It’s a triathlon that’ll last years. Yet, somehow, I think you’re up for it.

If not now, when?

Fellow Cancer Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said, “A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.” Fuck yeah! This is right in line with your week, when everyone else will be seeing mounds of dirt and gravel and you’ll have visions of constructing vast edifices for the worship and empowerment of human potential. Act on those noble and magnificent daydreams. Take instruction from Antoine: “As for the future, your task is not [just] to foresee it, but to enable it.”

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Fun with Dick and Jen Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. —T.S. Eliot A few Wednesdays ago, Jen and I went to Charley’s in Paia. We had heard that their special guest DJ-featured Sunn Lounge night has been gaining quite the following lately. And indeed, when we got there, we did notice the onetime old-country-town bar was filled with the eternally dancing, young and beautiful kids of Maui’s North Shore. We met up with our friend Sarah, ordered drinks and set our purses down on the candlelit table by the dance floor as we stared in wide-eyed wonder at the bevy of beauties before us. Jen was so busy trying to determine the sexual orientation of one cute but very metrosexual guy—we’ll call him Richard—that she didn’t notice the flames engulfing her electric-ectoplasm colored, neon-green handbag. Trying to avoid a scene, Jen used coasters to quickly and effectively stamp out the potential disaster before anyone noticed. Though she couldn’t do anything about that smell of burning hair/leather/flesh. A few seconds later, our still-sitting-on-the-sexual-fence friend Richard walked by and purposefully squashed a glowing ember on the floor with his shoe. Straight points: Five. But then he launched into a chorus of Madonna’s “Burning Up.” Gay points: Off the scale. We went on with our evening and Jen was so giddy after narrowly escaping Pele’s Wrath that she might have had one drink too many. Later at the Sugar Shack, when we were getting ready for bed, she looked at me sheepishly. “Did I do anything embarrassing tonight?” Jen asked, drunk but serious. Then she laughed. “You know, aside from lighting my purse on fire?” We went to so many concerts this past week. And before every one, we made it a tradition to start first at working-class dive bar extraordinaire, Idini’s, in Wailuku. We like Idini’s. It’s warm, it’s friendly… and well, sometimes Bob the owner buys us drinks. Or, one of the warm, friendly male patrons sometimes will, too. It might have something to do with the fact that we are usually two of no more than five females in the place at one time. “When I die,” said some guy sitting at the bar, “I want to come back as a girl!” “Why—so he can play with his own tits?” Jen muttered to Kim and me, laughing. Sometimes the Idini’s men can be quite charming. Like the time we met Wild Bill, who formally introduced himself, was polite and a perfect gentleman. He damn near seduced us with his charm and gentility. “So… Can I buy you ladies a hot dog?” Wild Bill asked. Last Tuesday proved to be a fabulous evening for all who went to the sold-out Jack Johnson concert at the MACC. Due to my lowly status as tortoise-like music journalist on a hare-chasing assignment, I was unable to attend. Hey, don’t cry for me, Argentina—I’d had my fill of musicians that week anyway. But my sources tell me that the Castle Theater’s sit-down, acoustic show proved to be too inhibiting for some, including my dear roommate Jen. She willfully contained herself through opening act, John Moore Project. She even aggravatingly remained seated through Donovan Frankenreiter. But as Jack Johnson strummed his way through another of his signature charming, catchy tunes, she could not control herself any longer. In a bold and daring Footloose-esque moment, my sources say Jen stood up and looked back at the over 1,200 people in attendance. “If we all get up and dance,” Jen allegedly said with righteous defiance, “they can’t stop us!” As the crowd rushed the stage in enthusiastic yet peaceful agreement, supposedly Frankenreiter was overheard backstage saying, “That girl should be at every concert.” Yes, but hopefully she leaves her green purse at home.
