U.S. District Judge David Ezra has courageously ruled that biotech companies field testing biopharmaceutical crops in Hawaii’s open air must reveal the locations of these experiments (Coconut Wireless, Aug. 12). Biopharmaceuticals are plants or animals genetically manipulated to produce potent industrial chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs, essentially turning organisms into outdoor factories. In Hawaii corn and sugarcane have been used. Hawaii also grows seed corn for mainland farmers, thus jeopardizing the greater food supply along with local farms and gardens. The North American Millers Association, the Grocery Manufacturers of America and the National Food Processors have all strongly objected to the use of food crops to produce biopharmaceuticals. Earth Justice on behalf of The Center for Food Safety filed suit to pave the way for environmental impact statements, which logically should have been conducted before putting such organisms into Hawaii’s environment. -Eloise Engman, Makawao
MODEST, AIN’T HE? After reading about the little dog Coco and what happened to him, I had to write (“Mourning Coco,” Aug. 5). After the dog wandered off from its owner, it was left at the Maui Humane Society. It shows again how our county government doesn’t look out for our residents.
The owner of Coco I’m sure was devastated when he found out the dog was killed because there is no room to keep it. It just seems to be very wrong. I look at where some of our tax dollars go and I wonder who really benefits. Not Maui’s residents. Hopefully, I will be elected to the County Council and I will work to try and make sure this doesn’t happen again because there is no money. I will work to create public-private partnerships or raise the money in the community to build another wing to the Maui Humane Society to hold these animals until they can be adopted or their owner can be found. I will truly work to make sure this type of thing doesn’t happen and another pet owner isn’t heartbroken and another animal put down because our priorities don’t include Maui County’s residents. With Johnny Jackson, what you see is what you get. My two sons, who are four and five, spent the better part of an hour helping me put those lights out there so we could see driveway when we come home at night. So much for my lesson about the importance of hard work. Then again, your stealing the lights has also taught the kids a wonderful new lesson about aloha and evil people who prey on innocents. Just so you know, I plan on replacing the lights pretty soon but I’ll be sure to leave a surprise for you, should you decide to come on back and get another set. But for now, I just hope that every time you see the lights you stole you think of my kid’s eyes looking at you. And that maybe, just maybe, there is a twinge of guilt smoldering in your black soul.

‘People Should Be Sad and Angry’ No more 48-hour stays at the Humane Society
Charles Bunch. Infected with a skin disease, Coco escaped, but soon ended up at the shelter. When Bunch finally called the shelter three days after his dog went missing, he was horrified to find it had been put down the day before (see “Mourning Coco,” Aug. 5). Coco fell into the shelter’s grim death statistics. Limited space and low adoptions mean dogs and cats who’ve been there too long need to go to make room for new ones. That means killing, and the Maui Humane does a lot of it each year—a few thousand animals, in fact. Much of them are cats. In fact, 70 percent of all cats that arrive at the shelter end up dead. Only 40 percent of dogs brought in are killed each year. Bouchard mentioned Coco’s name a number of times during my Aug. 23 visit to the shelter. Clearly stung by the bad publicity surrounding the puppy’s death, Bouchard nonetheless seemed to empathize with the owner Bunch. “The day a staff member becomes immune to [euthanizing animals] is the day they no longer need to be working here,” she said. “It’s a difficult thing. We set the policy to do the greatest good.” Later, as we sat in her office, a cat suddenly jumped on my lap, laid its paws on my chest, then got bored and leaped onto the desk, where he quickly curled up on Bourchard’s day planner and went to sleep. ‘That’s Cal,” she said. “Cal’s one of our shelter cats. He’s deaf—he sits on the vacuum cleaner when we vacuum. When he first came here he walked around with a severe head tilt. We think ear mites were the problem. Cal was a lot like Coco, who was a half-grown puppy. Four months to a year old—it’s a very awkward age. They get the worst deal because people want a very young puppy or an adult.” MTW
In a tight spot The building where the Maui Humane Society kills animals is on the far side of the Kahului shelter, a long way from the air-conditioned cat building, the puppy pens and even the coops where they keep the chickens, rabbits and other assorted animals that fall into their care. Except for the giant brightly painted image on the wall showing a dog and cat over a heart, the room is spare, dominated by a small steel table in the center. “I tend to use the word ‘kill’ instead of ‘euthanize’ because I want to make people angry,” said Jocelyn Bouchard, Maui Humane Society Executive Director, using pretty strong words for a person whose job is to care for Maui’s lost and stray animals. “People should be sad and angry. We should not be doing this to animals. We pile them into shelters, then when

their time is ‘up,’ we kill them.” But now Bouchard says that policy is changing. The shelter will still be carrying out euthanizations—so-called “No Kill” shelters are typically privately-run outfits that simply refuse new animals when they run out of space—but dogs will now have more time for a possible adoption. State law mandates the shelter hold licensed dogs for at least nine days and unlicensed ones for just two, but Bouchard said that now all dogs showing “tangible signs of ownership”—being well fleshed, for instance—will get at least five days at the shelter. That’s the same as cats, which don’t fall under any state law but have lived under an unofficial five-day hold policy. In addition, it now takes two shelter officials to sign off on all kill orders. “That would have helped Coco,” Bouchard said. Coco was the dog belonging to Kula resident

LC Watch Promoting Ing
One of the distinguishing characteristics of the American justice system is the right of every defendant to professional legal counsel. And in the halls of your Maui County Department of Liquor Control, there is no more famous legal counsel than the Wailuku law firm of Ing, Horikawa and Jorgensen. At nearly every Liquor Control Board of Adjudication Meeting, an attorney from the firm is on hand, representing some bar or restaurant caught in the LC’s clutches. But sometimes, like the Aug. 5 meeting, nearly the whole firm is there. The agenda opened with the Blue Marlin Grill getting caught in a minor decoy sting. Firm attorney Paul Horikawa was their legal counsel. But he seemed nervous. For one thing, he stood every time he spoke. Even Board Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama became amused. “You could be seated,” Murayama told Horikawa the fourth or fifth time he rose to give a brief answer. “I feel like a Jack-in-the-Box,” Horikawa said to a few laughs. Now the LC Adjudication Board takes the “quasi” in the “quasi-judicial body” very seriously. The proceedings, though official, aren’t quite Law & Order formal. But Horikawa still seemed on edge, at one answering Murayama’s question with “Yes, Mr. Chairman.” “You only need to say ‘Yes,’” Murayama said, smiling. It’s possible Horikawa’s nerves had something to do with the fact that his boss, Lawrence N. C. Ing himself, was sitting behind him, awaiting his client’s case. On this particular day, Ing was representing Club Volcano, which had also been caught in a minor decoy sting (See “No Hostess Bar,” Aug. 12). But after giving his opening statement and naming his clients, Ing took the extraordinary step of introducing another attorney, sitting in the public gallery. Ing, who retired from the State Land Use Commission in June, explained that the man had just joined his firm. Chairman Murayama’s face showed surprise. “He wanted to meet you,” Ing responded with great sincerity. Murayama smiled. “You’re not supposed to be using us to promote your business.” MTW

The Maui News chronicles how U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye has truly become a Democrat in name only. Explaining how he helped pack an extra $100 million in spending into our nation’s $417 billion defense budget that the Bush Administration didn’t even ask for, Inouye boasted to the nearly 400 real estate and tech fat cats at the Wailea Marriott yesterday that he was named “Mr. Pork of the Year,” which the crowd apparently considered a compliment. And people still call this guy a “liberal”… Lee Imada, news editor of The Maui News, interviews a bunch of friends and relatives of former Maui County Councilman Haruo “Lanny” Morisaki, who died Aug. 13 at the age of 82. The group, which included Valley Isle Realty boss Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi, all described the 17-year county supervisor and councilman with words like “honest,” “selfless,” “integrity,” “kept his word,” “idealistic,” “legendary” and “friendly.” What’s missing from that list? How about the words “old guard.” See, Morisaki was part of the political establishment whose land development investments and official actions tended to run pretty close together. In fact, Morisaki was so invested in land that he was working with Yokouchi at Valley Isle Realty while he sat on the County Council. What’s more, in their 1985 book Land and Power in Hawaii, George Cooper and Gavan Daws outline how in the early 1970s Morisaki and four county Planning Department officials were invested in huis that profited from the development of Makena Surf at the same time they were acting on the massive Seibu resort then just beginning. “On a number of occasions they took official action in favor of Seibu that had the unavoidable consequence of protecting or enhancing their investments at Makena Surf,” they wrote.
THURSDAY, AUG. 19 Got a call at 9:30 this morning from pollster, former boxer and current Maui County Council candidate Johnny “Bang Bang” Jackson. He was steamed at this week’s Maui Time, which hit the streets just a few minutes before 9:30. “That was a cheap shot,” he said, referring to “Here’s Johnny!” where we reprinted five ostensible grass roots letters from five different people—including Jackson—all written in support of Jackson’s campaign and all using the same style, fonts, tabs, set-up and verbiage. Jackson explained that many of his supporters lack computers, which he generously provided. Okay, fine. But then Bang Bang kept talking, adding that he also “helps” his supporters with their letters. “I want to see what they’re writing,” he told me with no sense of irony.

SATURDAY, AUG. 21 The Associated Press reports that the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism is predicting that visitor arrivals will jump seven percent this year. Fong and Morisaki would have been proud.
SUNDAY, AUG. 22 The Maui News reports today that Maui County Council Chairman Dain Kane insists that he and his council colleagues will vote on the long-awaited and slightly controversial proposed Makena Resort expansion sometime before the end of the year. Kane’s a little vague on why it’s taken so long to get an up-ordown vote on the plan to expand the wild Makena area into a Wailea-sized resort, but it’s pretty easy to guess that none of the council really wants to stamp this thing approved before voters go to the polls in November.

mer Republican U.S. Senator Hiram L. Fong, who died earlier this week at the age of 97. And by talk, I mean once again get out my now dog-eared copy of Land and Power. See, as The Maui News editorialized today, Fong was one of the “old school” politicians. He represented Hawaii in the U.S. Senate from statehood—that would be 45 years ago today—until 1976. Now even U.S. Congressman Ed Case—a Democrat—is getting into the act. Case even went so far as to eulogize Fong as “the very best that our Hawaii has to offer,” “the very personification of the American dream” and “exactly the representation that Hawaii wanted and needed in Washington.” But in Land and Power, Cooper and Daws had very different descriptions for Fong: “The embodiment of the businessman-developer” who ran “a real estate empire,” “one of contemporary Hawaii’s wealthiest individuals” and “one of the most powerful politicians in post-World War II Hawaii.” Like Morisaki, Fong’s personal real estate dealings and professional political life often intermingled. One intriguing example mentioned by Cooper and Daws occurred in 1960. Fong proposed amending the federal Rivers and Harbors Bill to study the possibility of converting Ma’alaea Harbor into a deep-water port. That greatly helped the “four men who were executives or directors in Fong’s real estate and finance companies [who] were selling a parcel of land that fronted Ma’alaea Bay.” Hmm—Case
Someone claiming to be Carol Gabbard, wife of Republican Honolulu City Councilman Mike Gabbard—you know, the dude who’s running for the U.S. Congress seat currently being sat in by Democrat Ed Case—left a message on my home phone this weekend. Thing is, it wasn’t really Mrs. Gabbard—it was a recording of Mrs. Gabbard, saying that I should really check out her husband’s website www.mikegabbard.com. Isn’t America wonderful? Doesn’t it fill you with glee knowing you live in a country where an auto-dialer can leave a message on your answering machine, leaving all parties concerned to do other things than “converse?” Yeah. I mean, I checked out Gabbard’s site—it’s mostly nonsense, filled with reasons why Case’s support of gay marriage makes him evil—but we all know the real issue in this race: Gabbard’s stooped to using an auto-dialer in his campaign. If that isn’t reason enough to vote against the guy, what is?
TUESDAY, AUG. 24 Remember all those many thousand army reservists we’ve been sending over to Iraq and Afghanistan to do whatever it is we’re doing over there? Yeah, for some reason, their pay is all screwed up. Okay, just 95 percent of them aren’t being paid properly. That’s according to a new report from the Government Accounting Office, which found a system so “error-prone, cumbersome and complex” that no one in the Pentagon or the field “could be reasonably assured of timely and accurate payments.” Mightiest army in the world! Defense budget’s up to more than $417 billion a year! Boo-yah! MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD CORPORATE JUSTICE CEO Andrew Wiederhorn began his 18month federal prison sentence in August, but unlike other convicted CEOs, he’ll continue to draw his $1.6 million a year salary while doing hard time. He pleaded guilty to two felonies (including filing a false tax return) while previously the CEO of Wilshire Financial Services Group in Oregon, but his current company, Fog Cutter Capital Group, apparently believes Wiederhorn is a real hot shot worth holding onto. Fog Cutter said it might even give Wiederhorn a bonus, in order to help him pay the restitution he is required to make under his plea agreement.

SMALL MARKET London’s Daily Telegraph reported in August on the veiled but apparently active market of British collectors who buy and sell fetuses and stillborn babies, with one seller saying he has heard of prices over 5,000 pounds (US$9,100). The major suppliers, apparently, are labs and medical schools, which dispose of their “curiosities,” usually deformed fetuses such as babies with two heads.
SERIOUS SLEEPERS A 911 operator in Anne Arundel County, Md., apparently fell asleep in the middle of a call about a possible home break-in in progress on July 29, according to the official tape recording, which was reported by WBAL-TV (Baltimore). And in Alexandria, Va., the week after that, police found all three staff members asleep at the Sunrise Senior Living facility on Duke Street. They had slept through the buzzing call button, several telephone calls, and a police siren. The supervisor had to be nudged awake despite the burglar alarm blaring just 10 feet away. One patient had fallen out of bed and couldn’t get up, and another called 911 to summon the police when no one was there to help with his catheter.

On July 12, federal, state and county officials, responding to a call about an eye-popping scene at a sandbar just off Whale Harbor in the Florida Keys town of Islamorada, discovered a young woman apparently blissfully dangling by the shoulders from meat hooks that were hanging from a makeshift bamboo tripod and stuck in her skin. A Coast Guard officer took pictures and asked if anyone was doing anything he or she didn’t want to do, but the heavily tattooed, pierced people at the scene assured him they were just having fun in the sun. A sheriff’s spokesman said he couldn’t think of any laws that were broken but that he would look into it.

Indigenous Justice Will the world ever keep its promises? Native Hawaiians’ contemporary struggle for political sovereignty is giving all of us a unique education on the plight of indigenous peoples around the world. It’s too bad the United States government isn’t listening. In fact, yet another promise made to the world’s indigenous peoples is in danger of collapsing if the U.S. doesn’t change its ways at the United Nations. The pledge to pass a declaration recognizing the minimum standards that the world’s governments need to meet in order to respect indigenous peoples’ basic rights remains just that—a pledge. And it’s not like this is a rushed thing. The pledge was first made back on Aug. 9, 1994, on what was dubbed International Indigenous Peoples Day. That day commemorates the first day indigenous peoples were allowed into the UN to demand justice from the governments that had spent the last few centuries conquering them. It was the beginning of the United Nations Decade on the World’s Indigenous Peoples—a decade that ends in five months. “This commemoration is an opportuni-
ty to celebrate the richness of indigenous cultures and the contribution of indigenous peoples to the human family,” said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on this year’s Indigenous Peoples Day. “But more importantly, it is a chance for men and women everywhere to take stock of the situation of indigenous peoples in our world today, and of how much more needs to be done to improve their lives.” There are today an estimated 370 million indigenous people around the world who have to endure discrimination, impoverishment, poor health, threats to their unique cultural identities, loss of land, displacement from traditional territories and armed violence. More than anyone, they recognize that the failure to respect and uphold land, economic, social and cultural rights lie at the heart of the conflict. This lack of respect often leads to political killings, arbitrary arrests, torture and other grave violations against indigenous leaders and their communities. “For far too long, indigenous peoples’ lands have been taken away, their cultures denigrated or directly attacked, their languages and customs suppressed, their wisdom and traditional knowledge overlooked or exploited, and
their sustainable ways of developing natural resources dismissed,” said Annan. “Some have even faced the threat of extinction.” The draft United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples remains the first and most significant effort to establish truly comprehensive global standards for the protection of indigenous peoples’ human rights. Too bad there’s been very little progress. So far, a miserly two of the 45 articles have been adopted. What’s more, some states have slowed any progress towards final adoption. Adopting the Declaration at all—to say nothing of by the end of this year, seems a wild dream. Of all the nations in the world body, Australia, Canada and the U.S. have done the most to challenge the Declaration’s written text. Of course, they offer alternative language, but that’s been consistently inconsistent with international human rights laws that have already been adopted and accepted by the United Nations. American history in this respect is not encouraging. Our country has, to date, signed 371 treaties with indigenous peoples. Of those, the U.S. government has somehow managed to violate all 371 of those treaties. On Aug. 9 of this year, activists convened a panel under the banner “Indigenous Peoples: Setting the Standards for Justice.” It featured representatives from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, the UN

The UN, where it all should happen Working Group on Indigenous Peoples, Amnesty International, as well as the first indigenous person ever to take part in a UN treaty body. The panel demanded that the world’s governments work toward a timely adoption of the draft Declaration. Each panelist encouraged more states to work closely with indigenous peoples to advance a text acceptable to all. Here in Hawaii, where indigenous concerns are part of our daily news, we can speak to our congressmen and senators to make sure our nation’s perspective finally reflects the will of the people. It’s well past time to for our democracy to start honoring its pledges. MTW

Hey, you. Yeah, you, the button-festooned lug with the dopey elephant hat. Words can’t convey how much we New Yorkers wish you weren’t here. Traditionally, tourists are pleasantly surprised when New Yorkers act as friendly and polite as the people back home in Maybury. But delegates to this month’s Republican National Convention shouldn’t expect to be treated to the standard out-of-towner treatment. The Republican delegates here to salute George W. Bush will be received for what they are—unwelcome members of a hostile invading army. For the past 150 years Republican leaders have wisely avoided New York City as a convention site, well aware that the metropolis is barren soil for their party’s anti-urban, anti-immigrant, anti-feminist,
them Democrats—for everything from tax cuts for the rich to building concentration camps at Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib to invading Iraq to enrich Dick Cheney and his fellow Halliburton execs, some groups are encouraging liberal-minded New Yorkers to volunteer for the city’s squad of official greeters. Creatively altered maps of streets and subways will be handed out to button-clad conventioneers. Other helpful saboteurs wearing fake RNC T-shirts will direct them to parts of town where Bush’s policies have hit hardest. Rumor has it that prostitutes suffering from sexually transmitted diseases will discourage the use of condoms with their Republican customers. Anywhere between 250,000 and a million anti-Bush demonstrators are expected to hit the streets of Manhattan, but the city and

Even as the rest of America turns red, New Yorkers remain as liberal as the People’s Republic of San Francisco: fewer than 18 percent of the citizens of New York’s five boroughs (which include relatively conservative places like Staten Island) cast ballots for Bush/Cheney in 2000. But White House strategist Karl Rove sees the continued exploitation of 9/11 for partisan political gain as key to a Bush victory in November. That means throwing the big bash three miles north of the hole where the Twin Towers used to stand, where most of the victims of 9/11 were burned, suffocated, impaled and pulverized. Making use of the dead is also the point of this confab’s timing. The 2004 Republican National Convention is being held from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, a full month later than usual. The original plan was to have Bush shuttle between Madison Square Garden and Ground Zero for photo ops to coincide with the third anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Bush’s visits to the Trade Center site were quietly canceled a few months back, after 9/11 survivors expressed revulsion at the idea. But it was too late to change the convention date. Anti-Republican sentiment is rising to a fever pitch here as the dog days tick down towards the dreaded affair. A poll cited by the local ABC affiliate shows 83 percent of New Yorkers don’t want their city to host the RNC. And many of them are planning to do something about it. Rejecting ex-mayor Ed Koch’s call to “make nice” with the party that used the deaths of 2,801 New Yorkers—most of

protest organizers can’t agree on where to put them. Activists say they’ll direct marchers to Central Park, their preferred site; city officials are threatening mass arrests if they do. Adding to the already combustible Chicago 1968 vibe is a possible wildcat strike by city cops and firefighters. And now, as if everyone concerned wasn’t already tweaky, FBI agents around the United States are harassing members of leftist groups planning to protest the New York RNC. Strikebreaking policemen and private security personnel may be able to keep the protesters away from the convention hall. But Republicans who venture outside the Garden deserve the abuse ordinary New Yorkers will likely inflict upon them. True, the Administration eventually coughed up the $20 billion aid package Bush promised the city after 9/11. But that sum— equal to the cost of occupying Iraq for four months—barely made up for such disasterrelated expenses as police overtime, debris removal and rebuilding damaged subway stations and tunnels. New York’s economy hasn’t even begun to recover. As the nation’s official unemployment rate hovers at six percent, the city’s runs around eight. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Republican, opposes virtually every Bush Administration decision concerning New York City. If today’s GOP retained a shred of the dignity and patriotism that it once possessed as the Party of Lincoln, it would have dumped Bush in favor of a candidate more interested in defending America than in helping his wealthy contributors. Republicans should not be surprised that New Yorkers good and true will be yelling at them to go back home. MTW

Why we just can’t get enuff Suddenly it seems everyone’s talking about Nuffsedd. They’re a group of unassuming homegrown Upcountry boys who have suddenly catapulted from the wedding scene to the top of the Hawaiian music charts. It seems like we can’t even drive to Wal-Mart without hearing their infectiously happy ditty “Cherry Bomb” at least three times—but we never stop tapping our toes. That’s the thing about Nuffsedd—catchy, light, superfun—you almost want to write them off as fluff, but you can’t because they’re darn good. Their new album Open Doors for Strangers blends ska, jahwaiian, Caribbean soca, some funk and even a little jazz. Sax player Kit Okazaki draws from such varied influences as the Specials, the English Beat and Sublime. If you ever skanked around to “Twist and Crawl” in a sweaty high school gym, you’ll immediately be transported at a Nuffsedd gig. You may even feel compelled to peg your pants and put on some leopard skin creepers. But I digress. This is Maui, after all, and the boys from Nuffsedd never forget their irie island roots. Josh Kahula’s smooth-as-silk vocals move seamlessly from an almost-sappy sentimental ballad like “Sweet Conversation to the contemporary jahwaiian “Simple Eye.” Next thing you know, the man’s serving up some serious rub-a-dub and showing off a pretty amazing range. The band we currently know as Nuffsedd actually formed on Molokai. There was a big party and Okazaki, who was working for the Maui County Fire Department at the time— riding his jet ski back and forth from Maui to Molokai every day—got onstage to jam with a few talented local musicians. They liked the sound and started playing together as the seven member, more traditional Ho’omau. Later, Kahula, Okazaki, bass player Dave Wood and drummer Duane Rosa noted a unique musical groove. They clicked together perfectly and Nuffsedd was born. Their rise has been the quintessential slow and steady story. When I sat down with them before one of their regular Thursday night gigs at Paradice Bluz a few weeks ago, they were still reeling a little from their sudden popularity.
“We’ve been playing ‘Cherry Bomb’ for four years,” Kahula said, “and all of a sudden, it’s getting all this airplay. Everyone wants to hear ‘Cherry Bomb.’” “It’s a little overwhelming,” added bass player Wood. “It’s surreal, but we’re trying to keep it grounded.” Now that Open Doors to Strangers is one of the top-selling CDs in the state, with another single, “Simple Eye,” in heavy rotation, they may have a harder time keeping their day jobs. Only Kahula counts Nuffsedd as his career. Okazaki is busy managing other peoples’ money at Bank of Hawaii, while Wood and drummer Rosa have a window-washing business. At night, all that changes. The crowd at Paradice Bluz got all fired up as soon as the band started laying down their bass lines. It’s not surprising they count Sublime and Incubus as some of their driving influences, even though their music is really melodic and mostly mellow. Nuffsedd delivers a powerful energy that dares you to just sit there on your ass and watch. Moments into the first set, the dance floor filled up
with a gaggle of glitzed-out girls, most of them gyrating in front of Kahula. One of the little-known facts about both Kahula and Wood is that they are both devout Jehovah’s Witnesses—a faith whose members are regarded as serious teetotalers who eschew holidays, premarital sex and other fun stuff. I wondered if the decidedly, shall we say, secular nature of the venues and clientele they encounter poses any problems for them. They assured me
the whole gestalt of “opening doors to strangers.” “It means, like, giving us a chance,” he said. “Giving our music a chance, opening up the CD and letting us touch you with our music, our message.” And a very refreshing message it is. There’s something about this band and their music that makes people really happy. It’s not like we’re hearing a lot of heavy, negative music here on Maui. I mean the Hawaiian music scene is almost too “lite” at
By Marnie Masuda that their faith and their art fit together quite seamlessly, but, according to Kahula they “never try to impose their beliefs on anyone.” Laughing a little, he then added that, “we definitely have to turn down birthday gigs, though.” They all laughed when I suggested their album title may be construed as a veiled admonishment to those of us who decline free copies of The Watchtower from well-dressed afternoon visitors... those of us who have been known to slam doors in the faces of strangers. Kahula was quick to explain
times, but Nuffsedd’s songs are downright jubilant. Though not in a preachy or trite way. You slip in Open Doors to Strangers or hang out at a gig and let the positive vibe lift you up and away. If that dude in the big-ass Dodge Ram just let you cut in front of him at the Dairy Road intersection, he probably has “Simple Eye” blaring out of his stereo. “We also want to [give a feeling] of being friendly, being open,” Okazaki said. This openness flows through their music. Nuffsedd is a band that’s open to pretty much any-
thing. Their drummer, Rosa, proudly counts Billy Joel, Hall and Oates and Van Halen as major influences, while Okazaki idolizes Cannonball Adderly. Go figure. Because of this openness, the band is able to respond to the crowd’s energy on any given night and give the people what they want, so to speak. The night I hung out at Paradice Bluz, a bunch of salsa-dancing folk sauntered through the door in fluffy chiffon and stilettos, ready to rumba. So, mid-set, the band launched into a little Santana medley. They’re so giving, so very... open. How they do this without coming off as a trumpedup wedding band is pure magic. They are all skilled musicians and interpreters. Their covers resonate as much as their original material because they feel what they’re performing and, most importantly, they understand the music, it’s history and context. So Duane Rosa can have a burning passion for The Police and believe the 1980s were the greatest musical decade EVER, and his band will stand behind Duane’s rather anachronistic penchant and totally groove on “Don’t Stand So Close to Me.” All the songs on Open Doors to Strangers are original. Kahula wrote them all. With help from Wood, Kahula also wrote most of the original songs for Ho’omau. The band worked hand-in-hand throughout the two-years it took to produce the CD. “It’s been an absolute unique, concerted effort... we all had influence over the creative process,” Wood said. And they all described the process as “absolutely balanced” with every band member having equal influence over the band, music and promotion. It’s easy to pick up the perfect blending when you hear them play. They’re having so
much fun together and just enjoying the ride. Kahula’s enjoying the ride for many reasons right now. Open Doors has been in the number one spot nearly every week this summer and Pono, the band Kahula also performs with, also has an album in the top ten. His ebullience is indeniable. He sings all smiley, but we love that. When Kahula belts out the funky “My Groove” it’s like he’s channeling a bit of Little Stevie Wonder during the “Fingertips” era. On Aug. 13, Nuffsedd opened the much-anticipated Reggae in Paradise Festival at the War Memorial. The next day they opened the same show at the legendary Waikiki Shell on Oahu. The band members were ecstatic over
the whole idea of sharing the stage with Bunny Wailer, the man who, along with Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, created the most important and beloved reggae act of all time. Kahula described the show as “really cool... a really happy and open experience.” The guys got to hang out with some serious rastafarians and warm up a packed stadium for Luciano and Bunny. “They had this whole amazing reggae show with costumes and everything!” Kahula said. “It was definitely awesome.” I asked if Kahula had the chance to chat with Bunny.
“No,” he told me. “I was a little star struck.” If our little island world suddenly seems to be revolving around Nuffsedd, it’s no wonder. When the rest of the world seems to be telling us to be very afraid, to peek through our blinds with suspicion and contempt, Nuffsedd says “Naaaah, open the doors, grab someone’s hand and start dancing.”
At this rate, maybe they’ll be exporting their authentic brand of aloha to the mainland, where they’re in dire need of it. Until then, we can enjoy the party while it’s still a little private. Nuffsedd plays every Thursday night at Paradice Bluz, the new swank hot spot in Lahaina. MTW

When I got back to my table I saw some middle-aged rube at the counter, asking one of the employees if the slaw had any mayonnaise in it. No, no, she kept telling him. There was garlic alino on top, but no sauce mixed in. Oh good, he said. Then he walked out. I wolfed down the tacos—the plump shrimp nicely offset by the roasted poblano and onion rajas—then speared my fork into the whole ranchero beans and rice.
I checked my watch again. Twenty-five after. I dug into the chips bag again, this time feeling around for one made from corn. Some guys eating tortas—possibly with the rotisserie chicken—were talking loudly at the front counter. This wasn’t looking good. I thumbed through my notebook to review the conversation I’d had with my source. My notes were clear: 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Then I sighed. It was Thursday. Finishing the last of my beans and rice, I bussed my tray and walked out into the sweltering Lahaina afternoon. MTW

Maui doesn’t pay you to live here. The only way to make it is to start your own business. We opened in 1994. All of my kids have worked here. When we first started, we knew nothing, not even how to operate the cash register. But when you want something, you just do it. You know who helped me with this store? My customers. They taught me everything. Smart them. One day some surfers came in and told me, “Auntie, we like eat.” So we started selling food right after we learned the cash register. We have the best lasagna and shoyu chicken. We have hamburger steak, it’s really Salisbury steak, but you gotta say hamburger steak and add onions. We even have stuffed bell peppers. Impressive, huh? My son used to tell the customers, “Mom’s busy cooking in the back,” or “Mom made that.” But I can’t make the food here because of the Grease Trap Law. So I order the food from local businesses—Home Maid Bakery, Miyako Sushi. We have to help each other. My kids get mad because I help too much. They say, “Ma, you can’t be giving away things.” But surfers used to be poor and they’d come in here hungry. A lot of our people need help. We could handle the millionaires, but when the billionaires came, they killed us. The locals see us losing it all. Live Maui—that dream’s gone! I do politics in the store, can you tell? I’m an activist for anything. And get this, I don’t sell rolling papers, the best selling thing on the island. If I did, I would be driving a Mercedes instead of one broken down car. But you come in here looking for papers, you get one lecture. You get frustrated with this island—all that’s happening—you get automatically upset. But then you meet people in a store in Kuau where everyone is nice. I’m ready to sell. I wanna live. But I’m not going through a real estate agent. I have to find the right person. Rock Out...For Free! Sunday, 6 p.m. at Lahaina Civic Center Amphitheater [MUSIC] Who woulda thunk it? Well, the good ol’ County of Maui Parks and Recreation Department is indeed presenting a free concert featuring four of Maui’s finest hardcore bands: The Inertia Broadcast, Zero Tolerance, Khrinj and Metal X. These four bands feature the finest in teeth-grinding, head-banging, mosh pit-dreaming, original hard rock music. Metal X is a band that was the one-time rhythm section for Hideous Idiot, the official house band on The Point’s “Bone Jar” years ago. Zero Tolerance is introducing their new lead singer, Darren West, who is the former head of legendary hardcore band Resin. And yet another mysterious band, Inertia Broadcast, steps out from the dark alley of Lahaina’s industrial center to rock us into oblivion. And Khrinj is breaking away from their cozy upcountry abode to rock us on the westside. [LIVE MUSIC] This is a trio of guys, all from Kentucky, who’ve decided to reunite and give us some of their original folk/funk/rock ‘n soul, Kentucky style. Maui’s own Aydin, “J” of Kentucky’s Dieselcreek and Ryan from L.A. will be getting back to their roots as they do a little singing, harmonica playing and beatboxing, as well as deputizing a couple people in the crowd. The Pacific Whale Foundation is sponsoring this evening, and will be leading interested families around the pools, “looking for rarely seen nocturnal tidepool species by the light of the full moon.” And what sort of things will you see swimming around a tidepool at night? All sorts of scary creatures! Real scaaaaaarrrry! What? Okay, not scary. But they will be all weird and cool. Uluwehi Guerrero Sings Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [HAWAIIAN MUSIC/HULA] Uluwehi Guerrero is famous for his falsetto. So famous, in fact, that if you Google him, you’ll get no less than 3,380 hits. That’s serious. He’s also received numerous Na Hoku Hanohano award nominations and even won Best Male Vocalist of the Year in 2001. And his past annual concerts were quickly sold-out. So this time, with Uluwehi being accompanied by a full band and string ensemble along with over 80 students from his Halau, as well as being armed with new songs off his soon-to-be-released CD, you better run not walk to the box office for a chance to experience a beautiful evening of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music and hula. The Conscious Healing Saturday, 10 p.m. at Casanova [LIVE MUSIC] The Conscious Healing is a group of serious— and seriously spiritual—local musicians who “just want to bring the feel-good vibe to a dark world and shed some light.” And they do it by making danceable, ukulele-based island music and reggae with hip-hop, funk and Latin influences, using four-part horn lines and turntable scratching. Wow—a full horn and rhythm section? Hey, I’m all for a little conscious healing by way of a little horn-y therapy…

Kirtan Yoga Concert Sunday, 7 p.m. at The Studio in the Haiku Cannery [SPIRITUALITY/MUSIC] This is a Divine Kirtan Yoga Concert with Lalita, Jagadesh das, Premalata, Krishna Sharna Devi and Chandrika. Um, yeah… I don’t know what all this means but I do know that this is a benefit concert for somebody named Sarva and that they’ll be serving chai. I like chai. From what I gather, they’ll also be featuring chanting and devotional singing, as well as Indian dance and yogic poetry. As for the Kirtan Yoga thing, apparently, it is “a powerful sacred music meditation that combines ancient yogic mantras with Beautiful healing melodies to provide a musical journey that inspires the essence.” Yeah, still lost. Anyway, they do need volunteers for this spiritual event, or you can donate a minimum five bucks to check it out. For more info, call 572-7100.

Good news it exists, bad news it’s being guarded by giant, murderous snakes who don’t want to give it up. Hey, it could happen. Sure, stuff like that happens all the time. You just don’t hear about it. Stupid liberal media. Stars a bunch of people you never heard of. See Film Critique. HERO – (PG13) – Action/Adventure - Jet Li stars in this martial arts movie that Yahoo! Movies blurb describes as, “In a distant war torn land, a ruthless emperor is rising to power with an iron fist and his massive armies. To control everything, he will stop at nothing.” Yeah, distant—try our country under George W. Bush. Anyway, Li kicks ass—I’m not being metaphoric here—so it’ll be fun. SUPER BABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2 - (PG) Family Comedy - Four talking toddlers turn superhero spies in order to save the world from an evil, mind-controlling, media mogul. Well, now, that’s the most believable story I’ve heard all week! And I hear one of the toddlers is up for best supporting actor for this one...

Will he find the cell phone she left behind just before the clock strikes midnight? ALIEN VS. PREDATOR - (PG13) – Science Fiction/Action – This landmark 5-4 Supreme Court decision from the final years of the often controversial Warren Court stipulated that in times of crisis involving scary monsters from space that drool acid and kill things really, really fast, humanity is pretty much screwed. How they converted Justice Felix Frankfurter’s dry, legalistic rhetoric that into a movie starring Lance Henriksen is beyond me. BOURNE SUPREMACY - (PG13) Action/Adventure - Think James Bond, but pissed off in a Fugitive kind of way. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon at his emotionally emptiest) is an exAmerican assassin who’s tired of killing foreign leaders and just wants to live with this German girlfriend (Franka Potente) in peace. But his former employer isn’t too keen on the retirement plans. Yeah, that was pretty much the first movie, Bourne Identity, but who cares. Also stars Brian Cox and Julia Stiles. EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING - (R) - Horror - The film traces the story of Father Lankester Merrin (Stellan Skarsåard) back to his first encounter with the Devil in post-WW II Africa. Scary, scary antics ensue. Creepy, creepy cinematics will terrify and delight. Here’s hoping, anyway. HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (PG13) - Comedy - A corporate dude (John Cho) and his medical school pal (Kal Penn) smoke a lot of pot one night and then decide to drive through late night New Jersey searching for White Castle hamburgers, which are these little square hamburgers they sell on the East Coast that are supposed to be really good but are, in fact, too small and bland to provide any real sustenance. Anyhoo, hilarity ensues, which is unusual because the guy who played Doogie Howser co-stars as himself. I, ROBOT - (PG-13) - Science Fiction/Adventure - This Will Smith vehicle is set far enough in the future when thousands of creepy human-looking robots can talk and walk around and go to the mall and stuff and everyone doesn’t get all freaked out over it. Based on sci-fi author Isaac Asimov’s classic collection of short stories of the same name, the movie follows Smith’s detective character as he tries to prove a robot violated its basic programming and willingly committed a crime. Also stars hottie Bridget Moynahan. LITTLE BLACK BOOK - (PG13) - Comedy/Romance - Brittany Murphy stars as an associate producer for a daytime talk show who gets frustrated when her boyfriend (Ron Livingston) won’t talk about his past relationships. Geez, usually you can’t get them to shut up about them! Anyway, using the show’s resources, she seeks out and interviews his exes and typically, finds out more than she wanted to. MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE - (R) - Political Thriller Denzel Washington plays an American Gulf War vet whose strange dreams a decade after the war ended lead him to believe he and his squad were kidnapped and brainwashed as part of some conspiracy to take over the U.S. government. Hey, wait, that sounds familiar. Oh yeah, it was this other movie called… The Manchurian Candidate, starring Frank Sinatra and that woman from Murder, She Wrote. I loved that film. You people suck. Also starring Liev Schreiber and Meryl Streep. THE NOTEBOOK - (PG13) - Drama/Romance Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the bestselling Nicolas Sparks novel of the same name, if the preview to this movie didn’t darn near choke you up, you probably should just forget about it. It’s a love story recollected by an older man (James Garner) and woman (Gena Rowlands) about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who were tragically separated. What happened to them? Go see the

movie. But first, hand me a tissue, will ya? OPEN WATER - (R) - Thriller – This one’s real simple: Couple goes on vacation, goes scuba diving, couple gets left behind, floats for two hours in the middle of the ocean while sharks and other scary things get closer and closer. It’s tough to say anything more without giving away the ending, but what do you think would happen to a couple left out there all by their lonesome? Stars Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis. PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT (G) - Romantic Comedy - Another reality-based concept of a common girl who discovers her inheritance to the throne as a princess and has to suffer the consequences, like learning to ride horses side-saddle. In this sequel, Princess Mia discovers that she not only must take over ruling her new country but she’s got to find herself a man to stand behind her in marriage before she does so. This movie is just crawling with backhanded fantasies posing as feminist ideals, isn’t it? SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). THE VILLAGE - (PG) - Drama/Romance/Science Fiction/Fantasy/Thriller - Geez, throw in “Comedy” and it’s a film for everybody! And I thought it was just the latest creepy flick by M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs)! But I guess that’s where the “Romance” comes in. So this movie is about a village (hence the title) with a close-knit community (hence the “Drama”) who go through their normal routine, knowing that evil creatures reside in the surrounding forest (ahem, “Science FictionThriller”). There is one town rebel, though, who ventures into the woods and pisses every one off (oh, that’s gotta be Joaquin Phoenix!). Also stars William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Adrien Brody. WITHOUT A PADDLE - (PG13) - Comedy - Think Deliverance, but not as funny. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard play three guys who take a canoe into the Oregon wilderness looking for treasure but finding dangerous hunters, hippie chicks, wild rapids and some crazy old coot played by Burt Reynolds who starred in, among other movies, Deliverance. YU-GI-OH! THE MOVIE - (PG)- Science Fiction/Animation – Impressive Japanese anime picture not to be confused with the universally panned Yu-Gi-Oh! The Musical. Like all impressive Japanese anime pictures, this one involves a Battle City Tournament, the awakening of an ancient evil, revenge, a mysterious alter ego and something referred to as “the power of the Eighth Millennium Item.” Should be a kick-ass show.

So he began writing screenplays. A couple years ago, he wrote a three-act play called A Place for Penny, which ran for two weekends at the Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA). Then last year, he wrote a play about a “trapped and tormented housewife, a delinquent husband lost in fantasy, [and] a paperboy caught in between until the police step in” called The Wrong Guy, which also ran at MAPA. This year, Peoples put together a smorgasbord of human dysfunction in the play Ci Vediamo, Mama. “The story began as an ongoing internal, bickering dialogue which intensified while at work,” wrote Peoples in his program introduction. “I’d sit with the keyboard and 1.5-litre bottles of 2001 Woodbridge merlot, always making sure my characters were wound tight. Then I’d release them on each other and watch/record the action.” He calls the resulting play “a mature, coming of age story” about a mentally challenged boy named Jimmy who endures a difficult home life. It’s a story that illustrates the destruction of abuse and disease, be it alcoholism or AIDS, but also the strength of character required to overcome such obstacles. Yet when it came time to cast the roles, Peoples found that actresses were bothered by the strong domestic and sexual abuse content. He finally found an MCC nursing instructor, Patricia Duckworth, to take on the heavy role of Carla, Jimmy’s

Peoples. “’Just work out a charity event contract for me at the Iao Theater and then promote it within your circles, your members.’” He struck an agreement with the charities that all net proceeds would go to those groups, or $300 each if Peoples doesn’t break a profit, which will come from his own pocket. It’s a serious risk, but then again, Ci Vediamo, Mama is a serious play. It tackles issues of alcoholism, abuse, pedophilia, AIDS, addiction and death—topics that apply to everyone in some way or another. But Peoples feels he hasn’t written a “dark drama.” Rather, he says the characters of Jake and Carla become parodies of themselves, representative of the same redundant
cycle of events in people’s lives. They also serve as the “dark undertones to accentuate what’s good,” which is symbolized by Jimmy’s character. “Jimmy was an outlet for me feeling overimpressed, over-inundated,” Peoples said. “I feel slow in this lifetime—often I feel retarded myself. Jimmy achieves selfhood—he decides to carry on instead of withdraw, he moves forward instead of sink in sorrow or pity. “We’re all victimized. It just depends on what we do with it. Like Picasso—in his last years—went to the junkyard and made art out of what he found. Let [our life’s tragedies] be the fuel to springboard us into something constructive in our life.” MTW

Single in Paradise… ain’t it a hoot?! Maui is the number one destination for honeymooners worldwide. The sunsets, the warm tropical climate, the gentle tradewinds, the white sandy beaches, the omnipresent scent of plumeria, the coconut shell bras—they all scream romance. And yet, there are single people here. What about them? In a land of such epic sensuality, where you can’t walk a block without seeing recently married couples strolling hand in hand, what’s it like to be single? While it’s true that being single has merit, being single on Maui is, well, pretty rough. It’s not that there’s a lack of wonderful people to date or befriend or just have fun with. It’s that when it comes to long-term coupledom, many Mauians suffer from a bit of the old “relationship-ADD.” You can’t blame them, really—beautiful girls walk around in bikinis all day and supposedly there are five men to every female on the island. “There’s so many men here in Maui and they’re all surfers, artists, musicians or whatever and they all look good and we’re like, ‘go, go, go!’” says Danielle. I believe it has something to do with the type of people who are attracted to the carefree lifestyle Maui offers. Generally, the 18-25 year-old transplants are just breezing through on their way to Costa Rica or Australia or to the marketing job they’re expected to take on the mainland after graduating college. But the 25-35er’s are usually escaping the daily mainland grind by moving to Maui to slow down, surf and “really live life.” Kim agrees. “Everybody comes here with the mentality of party and surf,” she says. “They’re escaping the rat race and just want to play.” Then there’s the whole “small town” aspect. Really, Maui is just a small town spread out over 2,399 square miles of an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And while living in a small town has its charms, dating in a small town can be rather frustrating. Everyone knows everyone! Six degrees of separation? Yeah, right—it’s more like two on Maui. Maui is basically divided into four areas that are then separated by about half an hour of driving time. That means if you date anyone in your particular town, you’re going to see that person and all of their friends on a daily basis. And they will see you and all your daily doings, too. Welcome to the real “coconut wireless.” There will even be people in your town who will start identifying you as so-and-so’s “friend” and will consistently ask you about them, even long after you’ve broken up or stopped dating. They’re just being friendly, after all. If you are one of them “moral” folks who adhere to a strict, no-dating-friends’-exes policy, you’ll soon find that your options are severely limited. I’m sure you’ve all heard the infamous Maui dating motto: “You’re not losing your girlfriend/boyfriend—you’re losing your turn.” Yep, icky but true, my friends. Geography on Maui seems to influence dating practices as well. Upcountry is home to many families and the single people there tend to be more relaxed and friendly—not to say they’re relationship-ready, it just might have something to do with the low-key bar and club scene. More creative arts, coffee houses and house parties there. But also more tantric love, hippies and yoga fanatics. Relaxed and friendly on the one hand, please-don’t-get-yourpatchouli-on-me, on the other. But the west side and south shores of Maui tend to house a more meat-markety nightclub scene, with everyone adhering to a regular weekly routine of bar happenings.
