CURSES! I read your recent Coconut Wireless column that takes aim at the use of autodialers (Aug. 26, 2004). Since you’re going to vote for or against somebody based on the fact that they use an auto-dialer, I can only presume that you’re not going to vote for John Kerry. I’ve already gotten two auto-dialer calls from Kerry. -Roger Kimura, Kihei The Editor responds: Kerry too, huh? This is in response to the recent letters and articles about the Maui Humane Society (“People Should Be Sad and Angry,” Aug. 26, 2004). Instead of pointing fingers and blaming the Maui Humane Society for euthanizing (or killing) so many animals, we as pet owners need to take more responsibility for the lives and deaths of these helpless, innocent animals. The shelters are overcrowded and full of unwanted animals because of pet owners! It’s that simple! Eight to 10 million animals arrive at shelters across the country each year and four to five million of them end up getting euthanized! Just one unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in just seven years if they all survive and go on to breed. One unspayed dog can create 67,000 puppies in six years!! So who is to blame? The shelters that house these unwanted animals, or the irresponsible pet owners? [In addition,] unaltered dogs are up to three times more likely to bite than dogs that have been spayed or neutered. “Of the nearly 30 fatalities caused by dog attacks

investigated between 1992 and 1994,” says Randall Lockwood, Ph.D., of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), “we have found that none was caused by a spayed or neutered dog.” And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends: “Spay/neuter virtually all dogs, this reduces aggressive tendencies.” So please, be kind and save a life! Get your animals spayed or neutered TODAY!!! -Julie Dean, Huelo

This goes out to the jerk who came to my house party and stole my Mach 3 razor. I hope you like it. Only one thing—the next time you shave, you should make sure that you get that blade nice and close to your face. That’s because—surprise!—my face wasn’t the only body part I shaved with that razor. Go ahead and replace the blade but keep in mind that the handle has been all around my twig and berries. Each and every time you shave I hope you remember that the razor you’re holding was, at one time, pressed against my balls. Enjoy!

What you wear really says a lot

Life inside a sweatshop A couple months ago, Palm Beach County Commissioner Addie Green asked if it might be possible to pass an “indecent exposure ordinance” that would ticket people wearing low-rider pants that exposed their underwear to the world. “I was just tired of looking at their butts,” the July 16 Sun-Sentinel quoted Green as saying. “I was told by a lot of people that it’s bad and that government has to come in and legislate morals and behavior.” County attorneys said such a measure would be nearly impossible to defend, and though it seems funny that an American government official in the 21st Century would hold such views, Green isn’t alone. In Louisiana, state Representative Derrick Shepherd attempted to ban jeans that expose “undergarments or… any portion of the pubic hair, cleft of the buttocks or genitals.” “Why is it that when this state wants to address what is decent,” asked Shepherd, “we laugh and we mock and we make jokes?” The House killed the measure 5439, but these examples show a nationwide willingness to try and make it a crime to wear racy clothes. If only these officials were as outraged at clothing’s true indecency: The tag that says where the jeans were stitched together and the slave labor and sweatshop conditions that pervade the manu-

facturing industry. The truth is, we need more than public officials to get social change concerning our clothing. What’s required are better informed citizens, especially now with all the back to school marathon shopping sessions. One invention that can help people immeasurably comes from London, England resident Noel Douglas. It’s called the Ur Scanner. Douglas described his invention in a recent issue of Adbusters. “I wanted to help people see the structures and relationships that connect seemingly separate issues,” he said. “[A]nd hopefully spark some informed action.” While most product scanning systems today take information from us, allowing companies to send us emails on sales and other specials, the Ur Scanner gives consumers information about what they might buy. By scanning a bar code, consumers can get the manufacturer’s background, including all political, social, environmental and labor data. In this country, storeowners in a small town in Maine began researching the clothing they sell. The shop heads created a clean clothes inventory by researching the origins of the items hanging on their racks. The resulting Clean Clothes Campaign mobilized consumer activists and elected officials—today 500 consumers and 19 retailers are working together to focus on the ethical

and economical issues surrounding sweatshops. The Clean Clothes Campaign focus is to educate consumers and to raise worker conditions globally instead of the present race to the bottom. Ultimately, Paul Cormier proved to be the catalyst for social change concerning clothing. Cornier, of Cornier Clothing in downtown Bangor, was concerned about child labor and sweatshop conditions as he watched goods previously made in America starting to sport “Made in Taiwan” labels. It didn’t help that though the clothing price was the same, it was obvious that the Taiwanese received a fraction of the comparable American pay while the parent company reaped mega-profits. Cornier began asking for products made under livable working conditions. We can take action in similar ways. We can pursue Clean Clothing with the same passion as we hunt sale items. We can ask stores on our island to offer a full selection of certified organic and Fair Made clothing. After all, it’s our money. We earned it and we can spend it as we want. Let’s begin to see how right we are. We can also focus on clothing companies by asking for prominent, public disclosure of all factories. We need to demand independent monitors to guarantee safe working conditions. And we can create a sweatshop-free certification process to ensure human rights are protected and promoted. It is time to air the clothing company’s dirty laundry with our own clothing index. We could truly make Hawaii a paradise and educate the rest of the world as they come here to lounge in the sun and shop.

I walked into an establishment licensed by the County of Maui to sell alcohol the other night, but instead of carding me, the server asked if I was over 21. It was a subtle, but neat trick. The way stings work is that the decoys used by your Maui County Department of Liquor Control all have to answer truthfully if asked their age. The server was figuring that if I was a decoy, I’d have to say I was under 21, then there’d be no sale. The only problem with the “are you under 21?” approach is that the LC doesn’t go for neat, subtle tricks. County liquor law is inflexible: Thou shalt card anyone and everyone who walks into the establishment, regardless of age. No valid ID, no booze. To the LC this is a grim business. Adjudication Board members seem to like nothing better than shaming careless bar owners who don’t card customers. Look at what happened to Jawz Fish Tacos in Kihei. They got nailed in a minor decoy sting some months ago. They serve maybe $100 a day in booze. Management put IDchecking procedures in place. They trained their employees. Or rather, they thought they’d trained the employees. During the Aug. 5 Adjudication Board meeting, part-owner Greg Schmitz testified that he and his fellow owner Jeff Huyett had actually watched two female minor decoys come in. “They’re underage,” Schmitz said he told Greg at the time. Schmitz said he watched one of his servers look at the minors’ IDs for 45 seconds, which furthered his belief that the girls were underage. Schmitz said he was surprised when the server gave the IDs back to the girls and proceeded with the transaction. Figuring the server really checked the cards carefully, Schmitz didn’t intervene. It was a bad error. After the sting was revealed, Schmitz said he called his server an “idiot” and demanded to know why he’d gone ahead with the sale after looking over their IDs—both of which had the usual big red stripe that said “Under 21.” “I wasn’t wearing my reading glasses,” Schmitz said the server told him. The Board clearly liked hearing that Schmitz fired the guy on the spot, but they still fined him $2,000. MTW

LOCALNEWS WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 1 Bad news in the hunt for the Not-So-Big Snake. Not only is the search nearing its three-week deadline, but someone’s been stealing the traps left in the Hana area. So far, two of the 24 traps laid by state biologists have gone missing. This degrades state biologists’ ability to bring to snake to justice by more than eight percent! No word on whether the snake—or perhaps its cronies—have begun a campaign of sabotage… In other news, a Maui Police car went out of control, hit a fire hydrant, a parked car and then crashed into some dude’s yard in Kahului. Police, who refused to identify the officer who drove the car and apparently got himself injured, are investigating.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 2 The Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB) plants a big wet one on former Governor George Ariyoshi, awarding him a 2004 Mahalo Award “in recognition of [his] contributions to advancing Hawaii’s tourism and quality of life.” Now that’s sweet. The HVCB is giving Ariyoshi a hand for the decades he spent giving them a hand. Hey, by the way—didn’t anyone think it was odd that Ariyoshi was governor for 12 years and then ran Prince Resorts Hawaii for 15. That a man of the people, who held the public trust for over a dozen years, went to work shilling for a resort after he left office? I mean, it’s a free country and all, but some might consider that “cashing in” on time he spent doing the people’s business.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 3 In a Maui News editorial today entitled “President calls for optimism,” the paper agrees with Fearless Leader George W.

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

Bush’s call at last night’s Republican Party Convention for unity. But like Dubya, the News leaves unanswered a simple question— why in the world should Americans be optimistic about anything? Bush has been president for nearly four years. In that time he’s somehow managed to convert the massive federal budget surpluses he inherited from the Clinton Administration into the largest budget deficits in American history. He’s slashed funding for federal scientific research at the same time he’s channeled taxpayer money to dubious religious organizations. He’s somehow managed to stretch the income gap between rich and poor into a chasm. He squelched federal prosecutions of the power plants that have spent the last decade spewing toxics all over the nation’s clean air laws. He invaded Afghanistan and toppled the Taliban leadership there three years ago, yet warlords and terrorist groups continue to rule the countryside. He laid out a series of ridiculous lies about imminent nuclear attack to justify the invasion and occupation of Iraq, but beyond capturing Saddam Hussein all that’s come of that are photographs of U.S. soldiers torturing Iraqis at the notorious Abu Ghraib Prison, a thousand dead Americans and who knows how many dead Iraqi civilian casualties. Gas prices are at an all time high. There are about a million fewer American jobs today than when he took office. And if he gets reelected, he’ll replace whatever’s still progressive about the federal income tax with a flat tax that will help the rich and hammer the middle class. Oh, by all means—let’s be optimistic as all hell.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 4 So yesterday state Representative Brian Blundell (R, West Maui) pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor sexual assault charge stemming from his July 15 arrest for allegedly groping an undercover cop in a Honolulu public park men’s

room. His attorney also asked for a delay in sentencing, which it looks like he’s going to get anyway since a judge won’t decide on the delay until after the November election. Since it’s a misdemeanor, Blundell doesn’t face getting thrown out of office, even if sentenced to jail… Not surprisingly, the state Land Use Commission (LUC) didn’t buy the Kingdom of Hawaii Nation’s argument that they actually own the whole island of Maui. The kingdom had said that developer Jesse Spencer had no right to build 410 houses on 94 acres in Waikupu. According to today’s Maui News, the LUC said the title search conducted by Wailuku Agribusiness showed no Kingdom ownership, so they were going with that one… What is this, the day of non-surprises? Now The Maui News is reporting that the Maui Chamber of Commerce endorsed all incumbents for reelection except County Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson, 6th District Senator J. Kalani English and 13th District

SUNDAY, SEPT. 5 Nuthin’. You?

MONDAY, SEPT. 6 Well, it’s over. The state’s hunt for the elusive, alleged brown tree snake of Hana has reached the three-week point. With no snake in sight—but plenty of radio spots asking thieves to return the two snake traps they stole last week—the state has given up on the possibility that shotgun-armed biologists might destroy the hated and feared snake once and for all. Making the whole situation a whole lot better is today’s Honolulu StarBulletin story saying the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Service will cut up to 12 field personnel on Guam. The reason—budget cuts—pretty much goes without saying, considering the guy who wants another four years in the Oval Office is about as science-friendly as the Flat Earth Society. Since most biologists believe invasive snakes come to Hawaii from Guam, the loss of personnel make it more likely that our Hana friend will soon have company.

Saying he got into the race to push for free dental care for the indigent, Evans derided today’s political system that keeps dinosaurs like Inouye—first elected during the Kennedy Adminstration—on eternal life support. “The rest of us are just extras, nobody really pays attention to us,” he told Roll Call. “We don’t even get a cracker at the buffet.” But then the story got a little creepy, talking about Evans—who mostly just croons along to old Sinatra hits in Vegas lounges— appearing on Full House and rooming with “well-known actor Seth Green” and even “briefly” dating Angelina Jolie. Among the reality-TV series being batted around in London, according to recent reports in The Daily Telegraph and The Independent, is Make Me a Mum, in which a woman reduces a field of men to the two whom she believes will make her the genetically best offspring. At that point, producers will inseminate the woman with sperm from both men and, using intravaginal micro technology, will attempt to record a “race” to see which sperm gets to the egg first. PUNK SCIENCE A U.S. Army laboratory in Natick, Mass., has developed a lightweight, dried-food meal that can be safely hydrated by adding virtually any kind of liquid, from dirty swamp water to a soldier’s own urine, according to a July report in The New Scientist. A membrane with ultra-tiny gaps allows only water molecules to pass, filtering out “99.9” percent of any bacteria and most chemicals. While urine will theoretically work in a pinch, the developers discourage its use since urea is not blocked and will build up in the kidneys over time.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT

McDonald’s franchisees in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Brainerd, Minn., and Norwood, Mass., recently began outsourcing their drive-thru order taking to a call center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Thus, a Big Mac order shouted into a microphone in Missouri gets typed into a computer in Colorado (and a digital photograph of the customer’s car is taken in order to reduce errors) and then clicked back to the originating restaurant’s kitchen, which has the order ready in less time (30 seconds less, on average, with fewer errors) than the

A New Hampshire judge was suspended, and the state’s attorney general resigned, both over allegations of sexual misconduct stemming from their after-hours behavior—in separate incidents—at the same conference, which had been called in May as a workshop on preventing sexual and domestic abuse. Five women complained of being groped by Judge Franklin C. Jones, 55, and one woman complained that Attorney General Peter Heed had touched her inappropriately on the dance floor. The local prosecutor later said there was not enough evidence to file a criminal charge against Heed.

“We’ve shown the world New York can never be defeated,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg told delegates to last week’s Republican National Convention. Nice sentiment, but utterly untrue. Three years after terrorists wiped out the 10048 zip code, revised maps of lower Manhattan still read “former World Trade Center site.” Thanks to a wounded economy and only token help from the federal government, the WTC-replacement Freedom Tower may never go up. Worst of all, no one has done anything to avenge the deaths of the 2,801 murdered New Yorkers. Though the war against Iraq has galvanized the anti-Bush opposition, from the far left to moderate Republicans, the carnage has served the Bush Administration well as a distraction from its cowardly, inept and self-serving early responses to 9/11. Thanks to Michael Moore, we know that Bush had a fratboy-in-the-headlights moment after being told that planes were flying into buildings. On 9/11, Mythic Bush rushed to reassure his subjects that everything was fine and that he would promptly kick whatever asses needed kicking. Real Bush turned tail and ran like a girlie boy, hopscotching Air Force One from Florida to Louisiana to Nebraska. The American people heard nothing from their head of state until over four hours later, when a man clearly in way over his head broadcast an assurance that other officials would carry out “the functions of your government.” Half a day later, he snuck back into D.C. under cover of night. The speech everyone remembers, the one atop The Pile with the firefighter, happened three days later— after Bush’s underwear had undergone a thorough bleaching. Among Democrats as well as Republicans, the invasion of Iraq somehow sucked all memory of the wimpy Real Bush down a media memory hole. The more you despise the war, after all, the more you tend to view its chief proponent as a vicious, venal and greedy man—an image of pigheadedness that’s hard to square with the scaredy-cat Real Bush. Iraq has had a similar effect on our memory of the Administration’s first major reaction to 9/11, the invasion of Afghanistan. “Our military has done an absolutely terrific job in Afghanistan, which is a war I supported,” said even Howard Dean, the Democrats’ most prominent Iraq war opponent. Yet, as we would see later in Iraq, the Administration’s constantly shifting rationales for war against Afghanistan make no more sense than for the lies used to justify taking out Saddam.

Let’s go through them:

AL QAEDA ATTACKED US ON 9/11 Maybe, maybe not. In late September 2001, Secretary of State Colin Powell promised to “put out a paper... that will describe clearly the evidence that we have linking” Al Qaeda to 9/11. We’re still waiting. Osama bin Laden, who claimed credit for the East Africa embassy bombings and other terrorist acts, denied involvement in 9/11. “I have already said that I am not involved in the 11 September attacks in the United States,” bin Laden told a Pakistani newspaper. What we do know is that all 19 hijackers belonged to Islamic Jihad, based in Egypt. But rather than insist that Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarek turn over the group’s leaders for questioning, Bush sent him more money and weapons.

OSAMA WAS IN AFGHANISTAN Certainly not. Afghan witnesses told reporters they saw bin Laden and his entourage leave the country shortly before 9/11. CBS News places him in a military hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, where he received treatment for a bum kidney on the day of the attacks. This much is certain: when the U.S. went to war on October 6, 2001, U.S. officials knew that Afghanistan was the one nation on earth where Osama was not.

AL QAEDA WAS IN AFGHANISTAN Only partly, and not mostly. As Steve Coll notes in Ghost Wars, his comprehensive study of the covert struggles in Afghanistan, Al Qaeda’s core group of anti-Soviet mujahedeen veterans came together around Osama in Peshawar in western Pakistan. Arms and fighters were funneled through western Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir, financed by Saudi money routed through Pakistani banks and protected by the ISI, the Pakistani intelligence agency. Stating that Al Qaeda was in Afghanistan is like saying that the U.S. financial industry is in San Francisco because it has a small stock exchange and a few big banks.

THE TALIBAN WERE DESPICABLE True. But while everyone deplores the Bamiyan Buddha bombings and the subjugation of Afghan women, Taliban atrocities were unrelated to 9/11. MTW

The Rookie Kihei’s Brian Frisselle first Formula One season

PHOTO: COURTESY OF ROAD AMERICA

As he’s talking to me, Brian Frisselle of Kihei has a big smile on his face. “My dad tried to keep us out of racing. He knew how difficult it was to get into the sport from his own experience,” he says. “He wanted us to do something different, but I know what I want. I want to become a Formula One Champion.” The kid from Maui, whose hero is seventime F1 World champion Michael Schumacher, is well on his way. This year was Frisselle’s first of fulltime racing. He signed up for the 2004 Star Mazda North American Championship with G&W Motorsports. In June, he looked at Formula BMW, a Junior series the German automaker created in the U.S., Germany, Asia and the United Kingdom. “My dad and I were hoping I could do one or two races when the series was racing at Formula One Grand Prix,” Frissell tells me. He tested, proved quickest out of the box and won a sponsorship and a drive for team PoleVision Racing USA. This meant he now had to prepare for 14 races at seven different tracks. He’d also be

running a 140-horsepower, four-cylinder BMW-engine that pushes his 1001-pound carbon-fiber car to speeds approaching 140 mph. His final race is this weekend, Sept. 10-12, at California’s Laguna Seca racetrack. Frisselle is currently ranked sixth in the championship, which is pretty good for a rookie who missed three races and is competing against guys who have raced the series before in the U.S. and Germany. Frisselle comes from a racing family. His father, who also manages his career, won the 12 hours of Sebring in the 1970s. As such, Brian was in the driver’s seat at a young age. In addition, Frisselle’s sister Stephanie runs public relations for him. “I didn’t have any go-kart experience, but nobody else accelerated to the ranks as quickly as I did,” he says of his youth. Soon he began thinking seriously about a career in racing. “Of course I had to finish high school first, but during my senior year, I was already racing.” After running the initial three-day course at Skip Barber, he began competing in the Skip Barber Western Regional Championship and the Formula Dodge National Championship— finishing second and fourth overall. At first his teachers at Seabury High weren’t too impressed. Surfing, sailing, kayaking— those were sports kids typically began competing at that age. But auto racing? “I ran into issues at school, [but] my family stood behind me and helped,” Frisselle says, recalling how he used to do his homework on airplanes while flying between races. “When some of the other kids had to go to surfing

competitions there was a lot more support since it is more of an official sport on Maui, but racing is not that common in Hawaii. Other kids experienced more understanding regarding delayed tests and late homework but I had to take my tests immediately once I got back from the mainland. I had to learn multiple chapters at a time without the help of my teachers.” Touring the mainland most of the year, Frisselle and his family all look forward to the winter, which is racing’s off-season. “We love coming home to Maui,” says Frisselle. “It’s my home and I really miss it when I am not there. I miss my friends, my house, Li Hing Mangos and the beaches. There are so many things I love about Hawaii and coming back home makes it even sweeter.” Frisselle especially enjoys body boarding at Big Beach, as well as go-karting at the track on Pu’unene. He keeps fit with at least five days training a week, working his shoulders, back, chest, arms, legs by running in the heat of the day. “You need the physical fitness,” says Frisselle of his demanding workout. “But also you have to be able to concentrate throughout a tough tiring race so you don’t make any mistakes.” Ironically, Frisselle says the skills that translate into good racing drivers don’t really carry over into the non-racing world. “Racing drivers aren’t necessarily good road drivers,” Frisselle tells me. “I’ve driven with very talented racing drivers on the road and it was really scary!” MTW

A Taste of Lahaina

Restaurant Preview

Or, how to eat a ton of food really fast

What you’ll eat at this year’s event

I think it was Einstein who said it best. It was back in, oh, must have been 1905 when the then-young physicist informed a world far too immature to appreciate the power and responsibility of his wisdom, “You gotta eat.” Oh, it wasn’t Einstein? Then it was Galileo in 1618. No? Pasteur in 1880? Mach in 1847? Okay, whatever. Somebody smarter than I said we all gotta eat, and he or she was dead on the money. We live in rough times—jobs are down, gas prices are up, the country’s safe, then it’s not safe, and oh, yeah, we’ve all got to make fun of Democratic Presidential nominee John Kerry because he didn’t bleed enough when he fought in the Vietnam War. There’s no better way to put all that aside than by strolling through this year’s 13th Annual A Taste of Lahaina. It’s really very simple: First you get you and your family out of the damned house and off to that really nice park in Lahaina where they held the thing last year. What a godsend that park is—it’s so much better than previous event locations like the Cannery Mall parking lot and that sump on the highway where the mosquitoes hold their conventions during the winter months. Anyway, you shell out $5 a head—kids get in free because, well, they’re kids—then convert much of your hard-earned money into special A Taste of Lahaina scrip. It’s just like regular money, but it’s, um, tastier. Then you walk from booth to booth buying however much food your stomach can hold. There’s also lots of local music and stuff for the kids, but really, 10,000 of you went last year for the grub. Nothing wrong with that, no sir. And they’ve got good stuff on the menu this year—ribs, papayachicken quesadillas, seafood, steak, pizza, taro-crusted this and ginger-glazed that. No doubt about it—Einstein or whoever that guy was really knew what he was talking about. MTW Tasty!

DINING

It’s an Honor Picking up Taste of Lahaina’s trash The future leaders of our community will be picking up trash this weekend at Lahaina’s largest food and beverage festival this Friday and Saturday night. Lahainaluna High School’s National Honor Society will be earning their keep by bagging garbage throughout the event running from 5 to 10 pm on Sept. 10 and 11. It’s a disgusting task but if anyone can put a positive spin on a job like this it would be these young folks. They look at it as a fun and bonding experience for their group. Julie Dicker, the National Honor Society advisor at Lahainaluna High School, first hooked them up with this gig 12 years ago at the second annual A Taste of Lahaina in 1992. It’s been a match made in academic heaven ever since. With the organization stressing leadership, character and community service along with 3.5 or higher GPAs, what better way to learn the ropes than to change the linings of trash cans and haul other people’s rubbish away? All joking aside, these kids work their butts off for the community and in return earn valuable funds for their National Honor Society special regalia that includes costly honor cords, pins, and a special sash that they wear during graduation. They are also treated to a club dinner at Roy’s where, it has been rumored, they even serenade other diners with the LHS Alma Mater. Despite having to cruise around with trash bags in their back pockets and getting covered in the excess waste at the event, the LHS National Honor Society looks forward to A Taste of Lahaina every year. “It can be a messy job but in two days we earn the critical funding that we need for the club,” says Dicker. “The kids actually have fun flinging those big bags into the dumpsters. What else would we do, a thousand car washes during the year? No way, we love Taste of Lahaina.” MTW -Jen Russo

JUSTIN KAWIKA YOUNG

KAPENA

With his signature good looks and sultry vocals, 26-year-old Justin Kawika Young is considered to be the contemporary Hawaiian heartthrob of this year’s lineup. He’s been recording chart-topping hits since winning a songwriting contest at 17 and has recently released his third album, My Eyes Adore You, featuring a blend of soul, pop, rock, hip-hop and island sounds.

The trio of Kapena made a name for themselves blending music from the Pacific Islands and topping both the Hawaiian and Hawaiian Reggae charts, sometimes concurrently. Their debut album earned them a Most Promising New Artist nomination, prompting them to record a number one second album, which won them two Na Hoku Awards for Album of the Year and Group of the Year. Since then, they’ve recorded 13 more albums.

BROTHER NOLAND

TAPA GROOVE

Brother Noland set the trend for today’s immensely popular Jawaiian music movement with his 1981 hit, “Coconut Girl.” He has released several albums and has a couple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards under his belt. He sings in both baritone and falsetto, plays slack key and guitar and currently mentors young musicians.

Weldon Kekauoha heads Tapa Groove, along with John Baricuatro Jr. on guitar, Salaam Tillman on drums and Kaulana Pakele of Ehukai. They are the current incarnation of a band formerly known as The Mana’o Company, which racked up five Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 2002. Summation: Same great music, different name.

MAURICE BEGA

RICHARD HO’OPI’I

You might remember Maurice Bega from his regular stint at BJ’s in Lahaina or from this year’s songwriters showcase called “Pat and Gail’s Local Licks 1” at Seabury Hall with Willie Nelson and Michael McDonald. Whatever the case may be, Bega’s soulful vocals and contemporary Hawaiian blend of funky jazz, bluesy guitar, Latin and reggae rhythms is sure to please festival goers this weekend.

Maui’s own beloved Uncle Richard Ho’opi’i is known for his falsetto. He even received America’s highest artistic honor for it, receiving the prestigious National Endowment of the Arts Folk Heritage Fellowship. Not bad for a small town boy from the tiny village of Kahakuloa, eh? As part of The Ho’opi’i Brothers, Richard and his brother Sol have recorded seven albums and have performed around the world.

Reiko Fukino will share the stage with the venerable Richard Ho’opi’i as she contributes her sweet, songbird flair. Fukino has performed regularly at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and has also recorded backing vocals on Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom’s Native Child album.

NUFFSEDD The members of Maui’s Nuffsedd first began playing together a few years ago as the seven-member band Ho’omau. Then in 2001, vocalist Josh Kahula, saxophonist Kit Okazaki, bassist Dave Wood and drummer Duane Rosa re-emerged as Nuffsedd, creating their melodic, positive, island grooves.

SURF

Bradda Francis Hana Hou Café, Haiku I first started singing when I was three—it was “Teddy Bear” by Elvis. Elvis is my man. He’s a good friend of mine—bless him—a friend who I’ll meet again one day for the first time. I wrote a song for Elvis in my latest CD, Half a Rainbow Away, which won first place in the Hawaiian Music Awards. I remember one of the first times I sang that song: It was Nashville, Tennessee, where they start playing music at 10 o’clock in the morning. Sure enough, I started singing my Elvis trilogy, and a woman in the back stood straight up and stared at me, eyes wide. She had been eating spaghetti, and had one lone noodle hanging right down her chin. When I stopped singing, she slurped that noodle up and said “Man, you gave me the chills. I thought Elvis himself had come outta his grave.”

You can find Bradda Francis and his CD at Hana Hou Café six nights a week. MTW

COVER STORY

AS TOLD BY ELAINE GAST

I give people everything I got, and I don’t hold back. I can sing in seven different languages, and I can sing almost anything on the shelf. I remember one night a man in a ten gallon hat bet me money. He says, “I gotta song that 500 dollars says you don’t know.” I told him I could not take that bet, for there are plenty songs I don’t know. “Play ‘Watermelon Wine,’” he said. And sure enough, it was a song I had heard 20 years before. He sang the whole song with me, toe to toe, every word by heart. When I was done, he put $500 in my jar. I gave him $400 back and said, “Here, I’ll give you four more tries.”

Jawz Tacos - Island-style tacos and burritos, including choice of vegetarian, mahi mahi, ono, shrimp, chicken or steak. Impressive salsa bar and the taco salads are da bomb! 1280 S Kihei Rd., 874-TACO. $

WEEK

At Hana Hou, “Blue Hawaii” is my most requested song. All the Kapunas come in to the Hana Hou, and we all sing together. Here is my life, where the people depend on me. I’ve married people in this place, and afterwards, I sing for them as they eat and have a good time.

Hula Moon - Enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or a champagne Sunday brunch with an open air tropical setting and spectacular ocean views. Featuring fresh Hawaiian fish. 3700 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, 874-7831. $$$

McYucky! Saturday, 2, 5 & 7 p.m. at Castle Theater, MACC [FILM] Last month, before Super Size Me showed at the Maui Film Festival’s Castle Theater, a group of us filled up on McDonald’s cheeseburgers, super-sized fries, Quarter Pounders, Big Macs and Chicken McNuggets. We did this knowing that the film would change forever our desire to eat fast food in the future. But we didn’t know that the change would be so immediately gut-wrenching. Oh well, even better—it sure drove the point home to have bellies full of the evils displayed on the big screen before us as we all collectively vowed to never eat fast food again. At least not sober. The film documents Morgan Spurlock’s—writer, actor and director—month long venture to uncover the physiological ramifications of a McD diet. Entertaining, hilarious and flinch-worthy, as well as informative, the low-budget documentary has already won numerous accolades, including Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival, the New Director’s Award at the Edinburgh Int’l Film Festival and MTV>News: Docs: Prize at the Full Frame Film Festival. You need to see this film. And if you do decide to give up fast food forever, I wouldn’t worry about good ole Mickey D’s. There are 11 McDonald’s on Maui alone—equal to the number of Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Carl’s Jr. and Jack in the Box restaurants on the island combined—and 87 McDonald’s total in the state of Hawaii. The corporation recently celebrated a 25-percent jump in their second-quarter profit in 2004—the biggest they’ve seen in 10 years. Which, coincidentally, correlates with recent statistics that show a 4.7 percent increase in overweight and obese people—that’s 64.4 percent of the population—in the U.S. (according to the American Obesity Association website) over the past 10 years. How McEvil. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

How to Love America

Cuban Jazz Phenom Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater [MUSIC] World’s greatest trumpeter? Arturo Sandoval is the man! I mean, not only was he voted Cuba’s Best instrumentalist from 1982 to 1990, but Sandoval’s earned four Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award. Yeah, and the Emmy was for music he contributed to the movie based on his life called For Love or Country starring Andy Garcia! Ahh… Andy Garcia… But that’s not all! Sandoval recently performed at the Grammys with pop kid, Justin Timberlake, as well as soul-goddess-with-a-piano Alicia Keys at the Latin Billboard Awards, where Sandoval won “Best Latin Jazz Album.” Oh wait, there’s more! A protégé of the legendary Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval successfully masters jazz, Latin jazz, traditional Cuban and classical music. He even performs regularly with leading symphony orchestras around the world and composed his own “Concerto for Trumpet & Orchestra.” But the best part is that Sandoval is sharing his knowledge with the kids! He is a tenured professor at Florida International University but he also works with other institutions’ music departments serving on various committees and educational programs, even offering scholarships and such. Ain’t he the bomb? Tickets are $38, $28 and $10. Call the MACC box office at 242-7469.

Sat., 1 p.m., Borders Bookstore in Kahului [POLITICAL/BOOKS] MoveOn.org is one of those great activist groups that puts out vicious attack ads that make Dubya look like an idiot liar— which, irony of ironies, he is. The group’s campaign includes television ads, press releases and the kind of general political mahem that used to be the hallmark of the American Left. On the third anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, activists will be speaking on the group’s latest book 50 Ways to Love Your Country, which includes essays, stories and practical advice on how get rid of the crooks that plague today’s national leadership. Since the book was published in our own Haiku, Karen Bouris from the Inner Ocean Publishing will be there as well. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Fight For Peace! Wed., 6 p.m., Maui Community College Student Lounge [POLITICAL/LECTURE] On March 19, 2003, Ann Wright resigned from her post as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbatar, Mongolia. Her career spanned 15 years in the Foreign Service and another 26 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves, where she rose to the rank of colonel. Her letter of resignation, sent to Secretary of State Colin Powell a mere 24 hours before U.S. forces invade Iraq, came about because Wright strongly believed “that going to war now will make the world more dangerous, not safer” and that President George Bush’s actions “created deep chasms in the international community.” As part of International Peace Day, Wright will give a free talk on what’s happened since. The evil, soul-eating paparazzi

scene lacks the heart-stopping reality of such a horrible accident and, as such, places the narrative in a cartoon category of softcore mock drama. While Laramie is barley scratched, his wife must have her spleen removed and the civilian driver of another car dies at the scene. With the audience properly prepped for the essential retribution that must ensue—if western culture is to retain its juvenile logic for problem solving—Laramie dispenses with his four harassing paparazzi one by one. It’s telling that Laramie’s only explicitly homicidal act, which involves a baseball bat, is against the dimmest of the paparazzi (Daniel Baldwin) and occurs off camera so that the audience is never allowed to condemn Laramie for his barbaric response. It’s paradoxical too that Rex Harper’s punishment, as leader of the depraved paparazzi, entails merely a solid ass kicking and an inevitable prison sentence. Paparazzi can be viewed as a nightmare/dream-case scenario for mediahounded celebrities whose personal lives can, at any moment, become tabloid fodder. The premise expects that audiences will associate themselves with highly paid cultural icons oppressed by harassing photographers. But it’s the same kind of mugs game whereby some minority voters attempt to elevate their underclass standing by allying themselves with Republicans in the unfounded hope that they will become part of the cultural elite by their distant association. It’s a flawed premise to begin with and it never ends well. MTW

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA Saturday, September 11 Super Size Me 2, 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater ENCORE PRESENTATION! - "Riveting and darkly comic Super Size Me is a whip-smart documentary" (USA Today). Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, winner of the Sundance Film Festival Director's Award, risked his life, even though his doctors ordered him to stop eating at McDonald’s when their food sent his vital signs into the danger zone, to make this film that Premiere Magazine described as "made with obvious passion and humor (and a side of fries). Super Size Me is a mostly entertaining look at fast food, the billiondollar businesses behind it, and its warped effect on our culture." In plain English...no subtitles necessary...hold the mayo! Unrated. 96 min.

Wednesday, September 15 Before Sunrise 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star in this timeless romantic story, set in contemporary Paris, of two questing hearts and minds whose powerful bond defies time and place. What ultimately makes Before Sunset so special is its deep-rooted honesty the way it takes the bitter with the sweet and somehow leaves us feeling elated. "This is one of the most wildly romantic movies in ages as well as being a vibrant emotional epic with one of the most perfect endings of any film that comes to mind,” swooned the Hollywood Reporter. Rated R. 80 min.

New This Week CELLULAR – (PG-13) – Action/Thriller – This woman gets kidnapped and suddenly, her only hope is her cell phone—yeah, good luck—so she calls some random guy—must have been through “directory assistance”—and the guy, not knowing it’s actually Kim Basinger on the other end, agrees to save her family and rescue her. Okay, this movie is just swimming in fantasy! I mean, not only is the cell phone battery not going to hold up for the two hours it takes to save the day but dude is going to be charged some major overage, which will prompt the cell phone company to “temporarily disconnect” until he agrees to sign another two-year contract and in the meantime, poor little Kim Basinger will be switching to AT&T. Can you hear me now? NOW THAT I HAVE YOU – (PG 13) – Romantic Comedy – A guy and girl take the same train everyday from the same station. Then, because this is a movie about two people who see each other every day before finally meeting, they finally meet. She falls for him, thinks he’s Mr. Right, but he turns out to be uptight and dull. Will their love conquer all? But more importantly, will the audience stomach this all the way to the end? Stars Nikki Valdez and Kristopher Peralta. RESIDENT EVIL 2: APOCALYPSE - (R) Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Suspense/Horror – Sequel to the first Resident Evil film, which chronicled the adventures secret government agent Alice (Milla Jovovich) fought a bunch of “bloodthirsty zombies”—as if there were “vegetarian zombies” running loose—at the evil Umbrella Corporation. This movie takes place the next day, when Alice escapes to Raccoon City and finds just about everyone zombified. If that isn’t enough, there’s some monster on the loose named Nemesis who moans a lot.

about it. Stupid liberal media. Stars a bunch of people you never heard of. ALIEN VS. PREDATOR - (PG13) – Science Fiction/Action – This landmark 5-4 Supreme Court decision from the final years of the often controversial Warren Court stipulated that in times of crisis involving scary monsters from space that drool acid and kill things really, really fast, humanity is pretty much screwed. How they converted Justice Felix Frankfurter’s dry, legalistic rhetoric that into a movie starring Lance Henriksen is beyond me. BOURNE SUPREMACY - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Think James Bond, but pissed off in a Fugitive kind of way. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon at his emotionally emptiest) is an ex-American assassin who’s tired of killing foreign leaders and just wants to live with this German girlfriend (Franka Potente) in peace. But his former employer isn’t too keen on the retirement plans. Yeah, that was pretty much the first movie, Bourne Identity, but who cares. COLLATERAL - (R) - Crime/Thriller - This Michael Mann film stars Jamie Foxx as a washed-up comedy writer-turned cabbie and Tom Cruise as a pontificating assassin. The movie takes place over one night as Foxx drives Cruise around from hit to hit. People get killed, Foxx delivers a few one-liners, and then everyone looks slick and stylish as they chase each other through L.A. Also stars Jada Pinkett-Smith. THE COOKOUT – (PG 13) – Comedy – Think Hoop Dreams plus a little Barbershop, then a sprinkle of He Got Game and all mixed in with a truckload of clichéd characters. This is the tale of the NBA’s number one draft pick who’s now loaded with endorsements and a $30 million New Jersey Nets contract. So he throws a cookout party for his family to celebrate. Get it? He’s rich, but he’s also an African-American who now lives with a bunch of stuffy white people. How do they come up with this stuff? Stars Storm P, Danny Glover and Farrah Fawcett. EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING - (R) - Horror - The film traces the story of Father Lankester Merrin (Stellan Skarsåard) back to his first encounter with the Devil in post-WW II Africa. Scary, scary antics ensue. Creepy, creepy cinematics will terrify and delight. Here’s hoping, anyway. HERO – (PG13) – Action/Adventure - Jet Li stars in this martial arts movie that Yahoo! Movies blurb describes as, “In a distant war torn land, a ruthless emperor is rising to power with an iron fist and his massive armies. To control everything, he will stop at nothing.” Yeah, distant—try our country under George W. Bush. Anyway, Li kicks ass—I’m not being metaphoric here—so it’ll be fun. I, ROBOT - (PG-13) - Science Fiction/Adventure - This Will Smith vehicle is set far enough in the future when thousands of creepy human-looking robots can talk and walk around and go to the mall and stuff and everyone doesn’t get all freaked out over it. NAPOLEON DYNAMITE – (PG) – Comedy – A cult classic already because of the screening at the Wailea Film Festival this year, Napoleon Dynamite is about a red afrod-ed, dorky teenager who sells herbal breast enhancers door-to-door while practicing his dance moves and learning the way of the ninja as he helps his new best friend win the election for Student Body President. This is kind of a coming-of-age story but it’s hilarious so go see it, you big fat turd! Gawwwsh! PAPARAZZI – (PG 13) – Thriller – A young, hot movie star (Cole Hauser) and his beautiful wife (Robin Tunney)

★★ ★

would like to say MAHALO!

Now Showing ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID (PG13) – Action/Adventure/Suspense/Horror – A big pharmaceutical company sends beautiful people into the jungle looking for the legendary Blood Orchid that supposedly holds the key to eternal life. are just minding their own business one day, driving along being beautiful when four evil paparazzi photographers surround them and cause a car crash, which injures said wife, leaving said young, hot movie star to exact revenge on the shutterbugs. This is normally the part where I’d make a joke about how this should have been called The Tony Danza Story, but I’m afraid he’ll use it as an excuse to take revenge on me, so I won’t. PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT (G) - Romantic Comedy - Another reality-based concept of a common girl who discovers her inheritance to the throne as a princess and has to suffer the consequences, like learning to ride horses side-saddle. This movie is just crawling with backhanded fantasies posing as feminist ideals, isn’t it? SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). SUPER BABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2 - (PG) Family Comedy - Four talking toddlers turn superhero spies in order to save the world from an evil, mind-controlling, media mogul. And I hear one of the toddlers is up for best supporting actor for this one. SUSPECT ZERO – (R) – Crime/Triller – An FBI agent played by Aaron Eckhart tracks a serial killer played by Ben Kingsley who likes to prey on other serial killers and may also be psychic. Watch for Wailea’s own real-life remote viewing guy and film technical adviser Ed Dames—Dr. Doom to his friends—in a bit part as a, um, FBI remote viewing guy. Also stars that chick from The Matrix. VANITY FAIR – (PG-13) – Drama – Reese Witherspoon stars in this period piece about a street urchin who uses her feminine wiles to get to the highest rungs of the social ladder in 1820 London. Will she find happiness in her newfound social acceptance? Or will she discover that’s it’s lonely at the top? WICKER PARK – (PG-13) – Romantic Thriller – So this investment banker played by Josh Hartnett has a girlfriend who he really loves until one day she suddenly disappears so he goes and tries to find her but he can’t so he tires of the search and decides to settle down and try to forget about her but he can’t but then one day he thinks he sees her in this café so he freaks out and becomes obsessed and now that I think about it wasn’t this Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo? WITHOUT A PADDLE - (PG13) - Comedy - Think Deliverance, but not as funny. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard play three guys who take a canoe into the Oregon wilderness looking for treasure but finding dangerous hunters, hippie chicks, wild rapids and some crazy old coot played by Burt Reynolds who starred in, among other movies, Deliverance. YU-GI-OH! THE MOVIE - (PG)- Science Fiction/Animation – Impressive Japanese anime picture not to be confused with the universally panned Yu-Gi-Oh! The Musical. Like all impressive Japanese anime pictures, this one involves a Battle City Tournament, the awakening of an ancient evil, revenge, a mysterious alter ego and something referred to as “the power of the Eighth Millennium Item.” Should be a kick-ass show.

THE DZIHAN AND KAMIEN ORCHESTRA “LIVE IN VIENNA” dZihan & Kamien (pronounced JEE-hahn and KAMien) are a DJ duo from Vienna enlivening the downtempo electronica genre. They are not content to “make just another typical nu jazz album, with a Latino bossa nova sound done by computers. This is too simple and you don’t have to be a musician to do that,” says dZihan. This live extravaganza features the Gran Riserva Orchestra, a 20-piece band with eight Turkish string musicians and several brass instruments, creating an experience more organic than electronic. Sensuous vocals grace several of the smooth, loungy tracks. Live in Vienna culls material from their first two albums and funks it up live. Wa-wa funk guitar and some conga jams set this duo apart from the rest of the nu-jazz scene. —2004 Six Degrees Records

Michael Franti talks the talk and walks the walk. This summer he went to Iraq and Israel to collaborate with local musicians in both places and better understand the real situation. On September 11 he’ll lead the Power to the Peaceful Fest at Golden Gate Park. For those of us who can’t go to SF this weekend, there is a new album. Songs From the Front Porch: An Acoustic Collection boasts three stellar new tracks as well as unplugged versions of older favorites. “Sometimes” is my favorite track—right on lyrics backed by smooth percussion and vibes. “Love Invincible” from last year’s Everyone Deserves Music is another standout, as is “Ganja Babe.” —2004 Artist Direct BMG

“SIX DEGREES 100” Six Degrees Records has put out an impressive array of albums by artists that are forever changing the concept of electronic and world music. This compilation celebrates their release of 100 albums. It is a difficult choice of what to put on here, but they’ve selected an excellent representation of the label and the artists that are “dedicated to bringing you the best in traditional and contemporary musical excursions from around the world.” Noticeable exceptions, however, are Bosacucanova and Zuco 103. Either way, Bay Area icons dj Cheb i Sabbah and Michael Franti are present, offering a fantastic remix of Spearhead’s Stay Human. Bebel Gilberto and Suba represent the label’s strong Brazilian stable of artists, just as Banco de Gaia, Euphoria, and Karsh Kale remind us that the best music is beyond classification. —2004 Six Degrees Records

ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO “OYAYA!” Oyaya! fuses African and French lyrics to music that draws upon musical traditions of the Caribbean. With her husband, Kidjo penned 13 original songs in a variety of indigenous Caribbean styles, including salsa, calypso, meringue and ska. Kidjo sings the numbers in English, French, and the African languages Yoruba and Fon. Originally from Benin, she has traced the African Diaspora to the U.S. and Brazil on her first two albums and now explores Afro-Caribbean music. There is Puerto Rican Bomba and Trinidadian Calypso sung in Yoruba infusing exciting Caribbean sounds with an even more dynamic and exotic, purely African element. “Congoleo” and “Oulala” are electrifying dance tunes with the latter featuring gorgeous steel drums on top of a meringue beat. —2004 Sony

Frankie Sez... This week on ‘North Shore’

By Kellie R. Holliday

Memorial Stadium. Donations are being accepted at the YMCA weekdays and weekends anytime from now until sale day. All proceeds are going to benefit YMCA Camp Keanae. For info, call 242-9007.

Gabe sees a hot surfer chick who has everything: Blonde hair, brains, board skills, but she’s also a lesbian. Then Frankie proposes doing a “lifestyle lounge” to Vincent, to spruce up the non-existent hotel nightlife. The only thing is he needs $10,000, which he eventually borrows from Tessa by making her a “silent” partner, to the tune of 30 percent. MJ tries to win back Chris by telling him “For a while I thought [Trey and I] were soul mates, but now I see him for the creepy stalker he is,” then trashes Chris’ trailer/house by accident. Tessa then sort of comes clean, but not for long. Finally, at last, BELLPORT is revealed! Then Nicole moves in with her dad to answer the question “Did he kill mom?” Can’t answer that now, but I can say that Gabe is definitely down with two.

Dialogue of the Week “This thong is killing me.” -Nameless bikini model “Imagine what it’s doing to me.” Frankie’s response

NEWS

You’re the host(ess) with the most(est), or you ought to be, this week. Don’t even think about leaving your house, except to dash out to pick up more vegetarian pigs-in-a-blanket, a DJ, or bags of ice for the fabulous cocktails you’re whipping up for your guests. Folks are queueing up outside, waiting to partake of your cuisine, bar, wit, and hospitality, and chances are you’re eager to give it to them. It’s more or less a win-win, as far as I can tell, unless you resist it—and I can’t for the life of me imagine why you would.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Your soul’s as deep and dark as the La Brea tar pits and contains about the same number of skeletons. Therefore you tend to suspect others of harboring the same sticky messes, and so an offhand comment can get taken way too seriously. Sadly, their words aren’t coming from such real places, but are instead either careless or affected, and thus not worthy of the angst they cause you. Don’t let things get too heavy too fast this week, as they could all too quickly escalate into a melodrama that you won’t be able to escape for months, at least not without serious damage to all egos involved (including yours).

573-1920

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Loneliness and disconnection are familiar feelings, no? Most of those who love you haven’t a clue you feel that way, though, because your perpetually cheery disposition gives no sign. When you relate your grand adventures, you consistently leave out all the parts where you were lonely, worried, or bored, so it’s no wonder people get the impression that your existence is a thrill a minute. They imagine a glamorous life with friends all over the world, without once considering how isolating it can feel to have a circle of friends so widespread that half of them don’t know each other. This doesn’t lend itself to the feeling of family and connectedness you sometimes want badly. However, it is there for the having: all you have to do is let those nearby know you crave it.

HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Pessimism levels in your blood are astronomical this week. Or, rather, they’re astrological, as it’s only partially habit that’s forcing you to view your life through such darkly negative filters, the rest is planetary influence from on high. Unfortunately, your resistance to cynicism is dangerously low; you’re far too inclined to believe the worst of people. Yes, your trust has been shattered repeatedly, but that’s no excuse not to patch it back up and wear it out in public again. There’s a difference between naïveté and openheartedness. The former is forever out of your reach, but the latter is totally achievable—and looks a lot better on you than drab, tired, bitterness.

If you feel that you have been potentially exposed to HIV and would like Free, Confidential and Anonymous testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. It is important to know your HIV status so that you do not unknowingly pass the virus to others, also early detection is vital to your health and treatment. The Maui AIDS Foundation now offers Drop-In HIV Counseling and Testing (No appointment necessary) Drop in hours are Mon.-Fri. 8:30am to 4:30pm, Wed. 8:30am to 7pm 1935 Main Street, Wailuku For more information on HIV/AIDS, STD’s including Viral Hepatitis and HIV Counseling and Testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. In Hana call 248-7801, Lanai 5656722, and Molokai 553-9086.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) There’s this craving you’ve been teasing at, like a tongue at a loose tooth. Your usual haunts and crowds simply can’t satisfy it, so you’ve been resisting its exploration. However, it’s time to venture outside of your safe zone, whether that takes you to the red-light district to hang out with crack whores, or to swanky bars where the local celebrity royalty parties. You have to be open to change, or you’ll never be happier than you are right now. Sadly, change means you have to risk messing up what you already have. You could end up worse off—but I don’t think you will. I think the pursuit of your truth will grant you more happiness (albeit composed of different parts) then you’ve ever known. However, it’s all speculation until you give it a try.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Stop being so insecure. You’re the most amazing person most of your friends know, so it’s astounding that you could at times be so completely unsure of yourself. Resist getting offended or feeling slighted this week, as your self-doubt is likely to make you take nearly everything the wrong way. The key to mastering this feeling (and resisting the sabotage you usually catalyze when in its thrall) is simply giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. Assume everyone wants you to be happy and successful and loves you dearly, at least until you’re unequivocally proven wrong—which will almost never happen.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your hackles are up. For some reason, every defense instinct is on full alert this week. In other words, you’re raring for a fight. Sadly, your gut impulses are way off. It’s highly unlikely that anyone is actually out to screw you over, despite supposedly ample evidence to the contrary. Beating up your adversaries might make you feel better, until the consequent lawsuits and hassles ensue, when you might feel pretty stupid for acting on misdirected suspicions. What to do? Sit tight. In a week, things will be much more clear, and you’ll be able to act in a way that’s better for the long-term, and without getting lawyers involved.

A public health message provided by The Maui AIDS Foundation.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) There’s the town. Here’s a bucket of red paint. What are you waiting for? Forget anything that smacks of routine this week; it’ll just bore, drain, and stall you (and somehow not get done, anyway). Laundry, dishes, shopping: all that can wait, and probably should, as you can get it all done in half the time next week than it would take this week. Meanwhile, you’ve virtually got the ability to dance for seven days straight, without drugs or magic shoes. Why waste it? You’ve already learned that going with the flow is mostly better than struggling upstream. The flow wants you to have fun. Don’t have the gall to complain. Just get to it.

Self-sabotage ain’t your style, darlin’. You’re more savvy than that, aren’t you? If you’re going to cheat, you’ll do it because you want to, not because you secretly want to get caught, right? Then why is there so much evidence to the contrary, evidence that points to a desire to really screw yourself over? I just keep checking and rechecking my astrological forecast and seeing that one little thing you’re up to that’s just not on the up and up. It’s sneaky and conniving and utterly out of character, so I’ve been asking myself all week: “What the hell is that about?” Either quit it or own it, already, would you?

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Excuse me, my dear: are you on speed? Your mind is sidestepping obstacles with the reflexes of a housefly, and outpacing light to distant destinations. You’re so full of intense, varied, and occasionally brilliant ideas this week, more than you’ve had in the past three months combined. The floodgates have swung open; now you’re virtually drowning in inspiration. The chief danger lies not in suffocation beneath a lake of insight, however, but in forgetting these revelations nanoseconds after they occurred. Save yourself months of regret by painstakingly documenting every one, via post-its, notepads, and self-addressed voicemails and emails. Don’t trust your unstoppable brain to keep track of or retain them, though; it simply won’t.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

If not now, when?

Kick the ass of anyone who calls you a melodramatic sap this week. Your emotions are running high lately, even for you, and focused mainly on very small details—but that’s nothing to be ashamed of, despite what some would have you believe. The easy solution to their scorn is fierce action. There’s no need to question too intensely what you’ve been feeling. Emotions are irrational, and trying to make them conform to some logical blueprint will never work. Instead, righteously defend your prerogative to feel them and act on them. And as for anyone who can’t handle that? Screw ‘em.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING! FREE Recycling Bins – And No Sign-up Fee!

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Extravagance is second nature to you. Why buy the cheap Hershey’s shit when you can purchase imported 70% cocoa dark chocolate that’s five times the price? What happens, though, when your artist friends can’t keep up with you, financially? I wouldn’t dare to suggest that you deprive yourself of all the pleasures you so dearly love. But perhaps this week would be a good time to: 1. Learn the joys of slumming it, and how much fun can be had on the cheap; 2. Play Mommy or Daddy and treat your impoverished buds, or 3. Ideally, a little of both of these.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Virgo the Virgin in the Hizz-ouse This month marks the start of a string of birthdays, all signifying the astrological presence of Virgo. If you believe in that stuff, Virgos are supposed to be notoriously organized, but really, they’re just obliviously obsessive-compulsive and charmingly anal-retentive. They’re thought to be neat and clean but my experience has been that Virgos have some of the messiest bedrooms in town. Anyway, my Virgo friends are quite wise, creative, conscientious and display a wicked sense of humor—all in all, a fun and righteous people. So Wednesday night, Birthday Girl Kim and her roommate Sasha came over to the Sugar Shack. We drank champagne and went to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse for ono grinds. We chatted it up with Jay the bartender who just came back from a fun trip to San Francisco, in lieu of notoriously “hostess”-ed Thailand, because he’s “finally got a good woman”—isn’t that sweet? Then we went to Gaby’s Pizzeria after Kim said she just wanted to “get laid” for her birthday. She did, indeed, get lei’d—by her gal Corey. Then we went to meet Sonja at Hecock’s so Kim could unwrap her gift from BJ and the Sugar Shack—a brand new, shiny red, i-vibe Rabbit to call her own! Woohoo!! After a couple Mind Erasers and with her Rabbit in tow, Kim was in the mood for a little Goose action. Jen threw us a couple of wooden nickels and we were off! Thursday night, sometime music-reviewer Aydin was celebrating his b-day with a gourmet feast at Roy’s on the Westside while Khrinj’s Hans was celebrating his terrific metal-self Upcountry at a basketball game and BBQ. Unable to make a celebratory decision either way, Jen and I stayed home and watched a Netflix DVD, Dinner for Five. It’s a show that used to be on Showtime in which Jon Favreau invites these famous actors and actresses to dinner and gets them liquored up on wine so that they get that funky purple stain on their teeth when they talk about how hard it is to make millions of dollars faking identities. We’re totally hooked. Friday night, with TBB as the designated driver, BJ, Rudi and I went to the prestigious Maui Chefs event at the Hyatt in Ka’anapali. Hundreds of the island-elite and other important adults flocked to the Broadway play-bedecked booths and culinary delicacies, while BJ and I made a beeline for the center bar. With champagne glasses neatly hooked into our food trays, we managed to squeeze a few plates of fabulous treats as we bounced from one satellite bar to the next: BJ accumulated no less than one Maker’s Mark and soda, Cosmopolitan and glass of red wine, while I acquired two hunky heapings of man-pie with a side of gorgeous drag queen. On Monday, BJ, Kim and I went to our belly-eautiful friend Amy’s Baby Shower/Pool Party. Amy’s boyfriend Randall manned the grill and BJ, Kim and I wo-manned the chocolate fondue. Soon enough, BJ set to chopping cabbage and shucking corn husks to the tune of Kim and I obnoxiously singing “Chaka Khan… Shucka Khan… Shucka Khan lemme shuck ya, lemme shuck ya, Shucka Khan…” Then we entered the “baby pool” and tried to determine the date, time, gender and weight of Amy’s little bundle of joy. We all looked at Amy, discussing whether her stomach looked high or low and trying to figure out if that meant boy or girl. We were also put in charge of entering the “pool” for our absent boy pals, one of whom guessed “21 pounds” as a fair assumption of birth weight based, apparently, on Butterball consumption at Thanksgiving dinners. And much like Turkey Day, we ate ourselves into a painful stasis before waddling out to the car to go back to work. “I ate so much, I feel pregnant, too! I’ve got food up to here,” I said, pointing to my neck. “Looks like it’s gonna be a boy then,” determined BJ. After work—on Labor Day, ha!—I rode my bike at sunset over to the Sly Mongoose. Sasha, Kim and Jen were there, doing their laundry next door and having cocktails along with bartender Tio’s famous smoked Marlin. I left, agreeing to meet up with the girls later at the Hard Rock Café for reggae night. Once there, I was in rare form for some reason, unabashedly forcing my mellow friends to dance, boldly drinking their belated birthday cocktails when they weren’t looking and curiously, not taking any damn notes.
