LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR WE SUCK I was disappointed to read your feature of Chez Paul restaurant entitled “Foie Gras Fantasy” (Sept. 2, 2004). Foie gras is produced by force-feeding confined ducks or geese massive quantities of food, via a mechanized pump, several times a day for up to three weeks. At the end of this fattening period, the birds’ livers are swollen up to 10 times their natural size. The birds are then slaughtered, and their livers are sold as “foie gras.” Some birds die when the metal feeding tube rips open their throats. Others die of ruptured internal organs or asphyxiation when food becomes impacted in their throats and digestive systems. Many are so physically debilitated and in so much pain by the end of the force-feeding period that they are unable to stand or walk. The mortality rate of animals in foie gras production far exceeds that of other animal industries. Foie gras production is so cruel that it has already been outlawed by a number of European countries, including the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. Last week, a bill to ban foie gras in California (SB 1520) passed both legislative houses, and awaits signature the governor’s signature. A growing number of consumers are refusing to order foie gras in recognition of the cruelty inherent in its production, and many restaurants have pledged not to serve it. More information is available at www.nofoiegras.com. -Laurelee Blanchard, Haiku

RALL SUCKS Duped by the wave of misinformation and lies regarding John Kerry’s honored military service, Ted Rall should be writing about our current president if he wishes to take issue with dubious and questionable military service (“Rambo was a Chump,” Sept. 2, 2004). To quote Mr. Rall, “Vietnam was an illconceived, doomed war that wasted countless lives for no good reason, launched by a president who lied…” We signed on to the war in Iraq because our president and his
cabinet sold America on Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction and a link to the terrorists who perpetrated Sept. 11. To dare speak out for calm and more thorough examination was, at the time, painted by the warlords as unpatriotic. Only when the truth finally emerged did the voice of reason begin to be heard. Devoting an Op Ed piece to the further slander of John Kerry (he “should be ashamed of Vietnam service”) two months out from the election is a degradation of your weekly paper. This is not the time to take the low road. Adding fuel to the “flip-flop” propaganda is a disservice to the intelligence of your readers. These are perilous times. We need to be strong. We need leadership we can trust. We need Op Ed pieces that rise to the occasion of these perplexing times we live in. Words not to pander, but to lead the way. -M. Mesh, Lahaina The Editor responds: Rall never questioned Kerry’s service in Vietnam—he merely agreed with Kerry’s 1971 position that Vietnam service itself was less than honorable. That Kerry is now running as a “war hero” justifiably strikes Rall as a bit hypocritical.
DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS The photo for “Maui Chefs on Broadway” in our Sept. 2, 2004 issue should have been credited to Lydee Ritchie.

ehbrah@mauitime.com The last time I checked, state health codes or some other such law mandated that all food service workers had to wash their hands after using the restroom. I like that law a lot. I had thought just about everybody knew that, but then the other day I was in the ladies room and I saw you—still wearing your restaurant uniform—head straight from the toilet to the door. No way I’m eating at your place again, but to be honest, I blame your employers more than you. Why haven’t they been instructing you on proper restroom procedures? Or, if they have, why in the world do they continue to employ a girl who’s dumber than dirt?

And Then There Were Eight
LC Hates Jazz!
Who’s who in the race for the South Maui County Council seat JASON NORMAN Betsill Brothers project manager, 36 Souza-Like Cendejas, Norman has no previous political experience. So he’s running on his credentials as a husband, father of four and youth basketball coach. His career as a homebuilder obviously puts him in the pro-development category.
ZANDRA SOUZA-AMARAL Paralegal, real estate agent, 54 Souza-Amaral is a Maui Nui Affordable Housing Task Force member who means well but tends to come across as boastful. “The role I played I would say is the facilitator,” she said at one point. She uses the term “ordinary citizens” so much it becomes uncomfortable. At the Aug. 17 Ohana Coalition Candidates Forum in Kihei, she even sang a song to herself at the end of her speech. Though there was a ukulele beside her, she did not play it.
And they’re off! The end of an era is upon us. The hour of much loved, much more hated Maui County Councilman Wayne Nishiki is at hand. For the past two dozen years, the ruthlessly anti-development Nishiki has held onto the council seat representing South Maui with an iron grip. But now Nishiki’s termed out. Smelling an opportunity to grab the open seat, eight candidates are running in the Sept. 18 primary. Here they are, in alphabetical order:
RON VAUGHT
Bertram supports greenway and open space dedication as a way to prevent Maui from being further overtaken by urban sprawl. In 1999, the Maui Land and Pineapple Company sued him. His crime? Allegedly crossing the boundary from his then-role as a Maui Planning Commissioner to activist when he spoke out at a county council meeting against an MLP permit request. His group is small— actually, it’s basically just him. The most recent tax records we found shows it has zero assets and zero liabilities.
Visitor Magazine Publisher, 67 Vaught is the tourism and development establishment’s candidate. A Maui County Police Commissioner since 2001, he has a long history managing various Maui radio stations. He’s unabashedly pro-development and proMakena Resort. He’s also been endorsed by the Maui Chamber of Commerce, which is only fair since he sits on the Chamber Board of Directors. MTW
JOHANNA AMORIN Maui County Planning Commissioner, 61 Amorin’s term on the Planning Commission runs until 2008, but she’s hoping to cut that considerably shorter by getting onto the County Council. Owner and operator of Kozo Sushi Maui in Wailuku, Amorin is effervescent. “I love Maui and I love people,” she says. She also talks up traffic—Why is it so bad, where is the infrastructure that needs to go up with development, and so forth.
JUAN CENDEJAS
MICHELLE ANDERSON
JOHNNY JACKSON
County Council Aide, 56 If Nishiki has an heir-apparent, it’s Anderson. For the last seven years, she’s worked as his executive assistant, working extensively on planning issues. She’s basically running on continuing Nishiki’s fights and policies. All indications are that she’ll be just as obstinate as Nishiki in the battle to keep Japanese railway giant Seibu from carrying out massive resort expansion in Makena.
Pollster, 48 Jackson is the former executive director of the Maui Sports & Entertainment Council. He’s also a former boxer. No, really. He fought under the nickname Bam-Bam or BoomBoom or something like that. Bang-Bang— that’s it. Anyway, he wants to bring about, as he put it, “unity in the community.” Sure, it’s boilerplate, but to his credit, Jackson’s also taken some pretty progressive and anti-corporate stands. “If we can give the Maui Visitors Bureau $3 million,” he told one audience, “we can give something to our kids.”

Sod Farmer, 43 This guy is dramatic, and I don’t mean that in an insulting way. Having no experience in politics—he’s run Big Braddah’s Sod Farm for the last two years, you know—he speaks plainly. “We need a morotorium on [development] and control it,” he says. He opposes any further Makena development and generally wants to see the conversion of agricultural land into residential land to stop.

There was a time in America when Jazz— Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Billie Holliday, Benny Goodman, et al—were the most popular musicians around. From the 1920s to just after World War II, it was safe to say that all records were Jazz records. Those days are long gone. In fact, as far as your Maui County Liquor Commission is concerned, live Jazz is something irritating and objectionable. Case in point is the new restaurant Yorman’s By The Sea, which recently opened in the Menehune Shores condo complex in Kihei. During the Sept. 8 Commission hearing, four condo residents, including one homeowner’s association board member, denounced Yorman’s bringing in Jazz musicians every night, including one female singer in her 80s and another 90year-old piano player. One resident even circulated photos showing one alleged restaurant customer passed out drunk outside and others wandering through the complex with drinks. “We’re willing to put up with [having a restaurant in the complex],” one resident told the Commission. “But now we have to listen to a band? How’d you like to listen to “Girl From Ipanema” five nights a week? Or the Count Basie rendition of “One More Time” five nights a week?” Actually, the Sept. 8 hearing for Yorman’s was a continuation of the previous Liquor Commission meeting, when a dozen or so Menehune Shores residents denounced the restaurant in particular and Jazz standards in general. Over the last month Yorman’s had added noise baffles and carried out nightly sound checks, but the LC wasn’t convinced. “The main concern for residents is noise,” said Liquor Commission Chairman James Gomes. “We need to place some conditions.” Gomes then suggested that Yorman’s play something more “subdued” than Jazz. The Commission went back and forth on what to do. How about music until 10 on weeknights, midnight on “special events?” But then what constitutes a special event? “If we grant the weekend,” said Commissioner Blake Takayama, “it will be every weekend.” At first, Commissioner Marian Kunihisa seemed sympathetic to Yorman’s, saying that if the condo association had a problem with the restaurant serving live music, then they should have put it in the rules. But later she “objected” to allowing midnight extensions on certain weekends, and moved that Yorman’s couldn’t play live music after 10 p.m. on any night, which is exactly what the commission ultimately approved. LOCALNEWS WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 8 For some reason, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed suit to stop implementation of Hawaii’s Act 50, which passed easily through the state legislature and governor’s office in May. The bill is innocent and rather sweet—it only says that government officials—be they police officers, lifeguards, city clerks or whoever— can ban people from public places for up to a year for any reason. Oh, and the banned people can’t appeal the decision. What’s so bad about that?… This being the season for government intrusion on individual liberties and all, the Fiscal Year 2005 National Defense Authorization Act contains a tiny provision that exempts all commercial satellite imagery and data from the Freedom of Information Act. In fact, it actually makes it a federal offense to release any pictures or information learned from commercial—not military or spy— satellites. The reason is, naturally, national security. The television news media, which routinely use commercial satellite images to show us pictures of natural disasters and mass graves stemming from genocide, is outraged… Don’t care about people going to public places or looking at satellite images? How about this one: Judge Joel August ruled that Hawaiians don’t have a historical or cultural right to arm chickens with steel claws and have them fight to the death for the purposes of gambling. Now that’s the worst news yet.
THURSDAY, SEPT. 9 All around us, celebrities are fighting for their right to speak out against the injustices that plague us. The Dixie Chicks spoke out against the war in Iraq. fault of the clothes. Now we’ve got part-time Paia resident, full-time world famous country music superstar Willie Nelson. To help in the fight to keep the resort development at Makena to an absolute minimum, Nelson has autographed a Jasmine guitar by Takamine— donated by Kahului’s Bounty Music—which today will be auctioned on eBay. The proceeds of the auction, which will end 10 days from now, will go towards Maui Tomorrow’s fight against Japanese railway giant Seibu’s plans to turn Makena into a Wailea-sized resort.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 1O So many politicians these days talk about standing for “the people” while actually working behind the scenes for the benefit of corporations and developers who need permits and contracts. But not Republican Don Couch, who’s running against incumbent Democrat Roz Baker for the honor of representing the 5th State Senate District. He proudly stands up for the developers and realtors who want government on their side. In fact, today his campaign committee sent out a press release bragging that the Hawaii Association of Realtors (HAR) just cut him a check for $4,000. Woo hoo! Couch got himself some of that big realtor dough! Screw that grassroots door-to-door stuff—the real money’s with the special interests! Campaign’s in full swing now, folks! As for the good people at the HAR, they couldn’t be happier—or more blatant. “We believe that your support for the real estate industry will lead to the enactment of beneficial legislation for the citizens of our state,” wrote HAR political action committee Chairwoman Stephanie Doughty in the Couch release. “We look forward to working with you at the Legislature next session.”

I am still undecided, but I didn’t want to make the announcement after the primary and without disclosing this to the public.” Evans added that he sees “eye to eye” with the GOP on everything except same-sex marriages. What exactly that attack might be, they don’t know and wouldn’t say anyway, but rest assured that we are prepared. And safe. Safe to go out and smell the flowers and get some sun and perv on hot chicks. And eat donuts—lots and lots of donuts. Nooooooooo! The AP is reporting that my beloved purveyors of glaze otherwise known as Krispy Kreme are getting into financial trouble. Specifically, a drop in stock price caused by the company’s independent auditor—which it didn’t name—refusal to approve Krispy Kreme second-quarter financial statements until an independent law firm did some “additional procedures.” This can’t be good, considering that the Winston-Salem-based donut empire is already under “informal, nonpublic inquiry” by the Securities and Exchange Commission concerning franchise reacquisitions and earnings forecasts.

However, according to a July 2004 Los Angeles Times report, there are also 1 million pages of valuable notes in nearly indecipherable code, which will require 20 years to organize and are strewn amongst, apparently, everything Harrington ever possessed, including dirty laundry, half-eaten food, and “a box of birds stored for 30 years without the benefit of taxidermy.” According to anthropologists, Harrington’s work forms the only written evidence of certain Native American languages. Sad Sack vs. the Mad Man Kerry, Bush offer competing, depressing visions We Americans are optimists, and why not? Aside from such temporary setbacks as a civil war here and a great depression there, our nation’s history has largely been one of improved personal living standards, expanding rights and increasing economic and military power. Things not only always get better, they’re supposed to keep getting better forever. If you stop to think about it, this can’t keep up. Old Europe is full of countries whose citizens felt similarly entitled to continuous improvement. World War II and the end of colonialism ended all that. They’ve peaked out and so shall we, but Americans never stop striving long enough to think about much of anything. Consider the winners in recent presidential elections: Reagan, Big Bush, Clinton and Gore. All were men who told the voters that their lives could and would get better. The candidates who lost to them, on the other hand, offered the dismal prospect of diminished expectations. and presided over an Iranian hostage crisis that looked like it would last forever. In 1984 Mondale told us that he’d have to hike our taxes to pay for the first term of Reaganomics. Bush lost in 1992, not due to the recession but because his wait-and-see prescription offered no realistic hope of a quick turnaround. Bob Dole wouldn’t stop talking about how the Nazis messed up his arm in the Po Valley. Americans hate a downer. Little Bush’s strategists have learned many of the lessons of Big Bush’s 1992 loss—don’t look out of touch, pretend to care about the problems of the common man, don’t talk like a girlie man. Yet they’ve neglected to offer Americans a ray of hope. “I don’t think you can win [the war on terrorism],” Bush told NBC’s Today Show on Aug. 30. On Sept. 7, Administration hatchet man Dick Cheney warned that “we’ll get hit again and we’ll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States.” Even Bush’s attempts to talk up the economy project deliver a wallop to that sick feeling that grows in people’s stomachs whenever he appears on the tube. “People have got more money in their pock-
ets because of the tax relief,” he says. “Our economy is stronger because people are keeping more of what they earn.” Of course, that’s not true. For most taxpayers, corresponding hikes in state and local taxes have more than eclipsed the tiny federal cut received by the non-rich. And the Bush economy has yet to produce a single month with a net increase in new jobs. Everyone knows there aren’t any good jobs out there. If Bush is that clueless, the economy is hopeless. Under normal circumstances John Kerry ought to be headed to a cakewalk. So why are his polls slipping?
his presidency. His healthcare proposal— which, with a probably Republican Congress, wouldn’t pass anyway—isn’t designed to help the voters whose support he needs. His pledge to roll back only part of the Bush tax cuts won’t leave nearly enough money to restore the unemployment benefits eliminated by Bush, much less expanding funding to education and other starving programs. Vote for me, Kerry is essentially arguing, and I’ll kind of try to sort of repair the damage created since 2001. And I probably won’t invade Iran. But forget anything big. Kerry can’t change his voice or his counte-
VOTE FOR ME, KERRY IS ESSENTIALLY ARGUING, AND I’LL KIND OF TRY TO SORT OF REPAIR THE DAMAGE CREATED SINCE 2001. AND I PROBABLY WON’T INVADE IRAN. As grim and somber as the incumbent’s team surely is, his Democratic challenger seems almost preternaturally unable to articulate a hopeful vision for the future. Cursed by a moaning speaking style and a droopy basset hound-like mug, anything Kerry says is bound to come off as depressing. Most damning, however, is the guy’s stubborn refusal to promise to make things better. Where a defter candidate—like Howard Dean—might have marked the thousandth death of a U.S. soldier in Iraq with a promise to stop the bloodshed as soon as he takes office, Kerry says the war will continue under
nance. But if he is to have a chance of beating Bush, he must convince an electorate looking for any excuse to dump Bush that he’ll deliver happier days posthaste. An end to Bush’s perpetual state of war, a real healthcare plan and an ambitious program to reform primary and higher education would be a start. Without positive, big-ticket promises of a brighter four years, Americans won’t feel hopeful enough to vote for a change. Given a choice between Kerry’s Sad Sack act and Bush’s maniacal dictator routine, people will pick the more entertaining—though dangerous—choice. MTW

Las Vegas Packages Laurie Traxler and her sail The waves are up to 15 feet and the wind is at 18 knots. It’s a big day at Ho’okipa Beach. Together with tourists who come from all over the world to sail the spot they read so much about, are Phil McGain and the Pritchard brothers, Matt and Kevin. They are busy testing windsurfing sails for the company Gaastra. “The majority of the R and D is done on Maui,” says McGain, Gaastra’s president. “We are all here, we have the loft here and the most important ingredient, the wind, is here all year round.” Gaastra sails are famous throughout the U.S. and Europe. When I visited their main office, I expected a massive design studio in a fancy setting. Instead, I arrived at a nice house in the lush hills of east Haiku. In the garage were hundreds of sails piled up, as well as boxes, booms and masts. An almost hidden set of stairs lead up to The Loft. There, in a 1,200 square feet-room, mostly covered by a huge wooden table, with a small hole at the window, was a sewing machine and Laurie Traxler. A passionate windsurfer, she was once a professional seamstress and a lace designer for the textile industry. Now she sews sails— more than 100 sails each year. During my visit, there were seven different production sails, all sized differently. Barry Spanier first designs the sails on his computer. Then the computer plots the design onto a table. Spanier and Traxler hand-cut the sail cloth, which is made from Kevlar and Xply material. Every inch is checked carefully, stuck together precisely with double-face sticky tape. Then Traxler sews it together. “I use an industrial machine. A normal sewing machine would not make it,” says Traxler, who is in charge of not only making the prototype sails, but also changing

them after the test team comes back from the beach. “We use a five-layer-seam construction and lightweight reinforcements to increase the durability of our sails. I am always adjusting sails by two to three mils to tailor it to the needs and wants of the sailors. A sail is normally cut and sewn on Monday, tested on Tuesday, recut on Tuesday night and retested on Wednesday morning.” Traxler works within extremely tight tolerances. Her work must be accurate to within one millimeter. But she tries to not get cocooned in the loft. “If I find the time, I go to the beach and see them take my latest sail out,” she says. “In the 20 years I’ve been on Maui, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting most of the pros who come to Maui to sail. And I am proud to watch the guys ripping or winning an event with one of ‘my’ sails.” Of course, it only takes a few seconds to destroy several days worth of Traxler’s hard labor. That can be devastating to watch. “I have watched Kevin [Pritchard] take a new sail out at Ho’okipa and trash it before he even gets through the break,” Traxler says. If there are waves, McGain and the Pritchard brothers test at nearby Ho’okipa. But if it’s flat, they go to Kanaha. When they’re done and return to the loft, excited about their productive day and buzzing with new ideas, the loft gets to feel very crowded. “I love it when they are all here, but when nobody is here, I get more work done,” says Traxler as she sews some of the clear fiber together. “I really have to concentrate, so the quieter it is, the better.” Despite spending all day in the loft, working on the latest high performance sails, talking with top pro windsurfers and spending time at the beach to evaluate her work, Traxler still enjoys making her own clothes at home. And the down side? “I don’t get to sail the sails I make as much as I would like to.” MTW

In the beginning… Once upon a time there was this guy named Aaron. He was like a lot of us, with hopes and dreams and fears and everything else. His particular dream involved a covered wagon, sharing art and color and living the simple life here in Hawaii. Some of us are from a place that’s boring in black-and white, which we left in order to move to Technicolor Maui. In Aaron Kobiella’s case it was Mundelein, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. Part of his escape to the Technicolor world came through art. “I grew up mostly doodling until freshman year of high school,” said Aaron. “My art teacher in high school was a very strong motivator. He took me aside and had me do other projects. He very much nurtured the spirit of art, he didn’t give assignments but had us do what comes naturally.” This art teacher, Mr. John Mayer, was also very spiritually minded and influenced Aaron in that way as well. After high school Aaron shot out of Mundelein like a bat out of hell. He traveled the mainland for several years with his friends and girlfriends at the time, living in places like Georgia, Colorado and Oregon. Some parts of the Hana Highway remind him of Oregon. He visited Pittsburgh and ate at a great vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant, kind of like Fresh Mint in Paia, but with even more mock meat choices. Aaron was searching for something, the same basic reason we all left our hometowns. He continued doing art, and learned more about meanings of color, lines and light. He also explored different healing methods throughout the world, such as massage, chakra work from the Hindu and yogic tradition, and the ancient Mayan meaning of numbers and colors. “Color is a very powerful form of healing,” Aaron said. “Color is so pure, it’s light,” he said. “It’s your connection to the environment around you and the spirit within you. The energy of the color you see will affect you mentally, physically and spiritually.”
I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore Aaron was doing art and traveling all over the mainland and exploring different forms of healing. Cool, right? Like a lot of us, just like Dorothy and Toto and Hansel and Gretel, he was learning and growing on his journey. But there was something missing, something unsatisfying about the big rock known as the continental United States. It was kind of… boring. Like the flat dry plains of Kansas that go on forever. Aaron knew he had to go somewhere else, somewhere far away where Auntie Em or the Big Bad Wolf or whoever would never find him. Like a lot of us, he was escaping somewhere, or maybe going forward to a better place. That place was Maui. He heard about a little farm on the internet and thought it would be a good place to live and work, while he got familiar with the island. The farm was in Huelo. Aaron learned some stuff about farming, got to pick a few papayas and plant some seeds, landscape some gardens and eat fresh vegetables. But all the while, he was also painting. And plotting. “I got the idea of not wanting to worry about paying for

& the Amazing Technicolor Dream Wagon anything, just doing my art. I was thinking about coming to Hawaii for several years now, living simply and doing art out of my wagon.” Yep, you heard right. His dream was to build and tow around a covered wagon to different parts of Maui, stopping at good places to set up his canvases, paint and display his art. What would lead a guy to follow out his crazy dream? Well, it may have something to do with faith. Here is the part that all you anti-religion folks can just skip over like the scary scene in a movie. When I asked Aaron what led him to painting, he answered, “God. God said, ‘Here’s a paintbrush. Use it to anchor light through the color spectrum in this plane of existence.’ This is a way
to do positive in the world and bring about spiritual awareness.” Aaron likes to meditate before doing paintings as a way to receive visions or direction on what to paint next. Okay, the bad part’s over. You can open your eyes now. So Aaron made a wagon. It took him a couple months while working on the farm in Huelo. It’s made out of local, organic and re-used materials, not because he’s politically correct, but because it was the cheapest way to do things. “The wagon is made out of bamboo. I found some of it and got some of it from a forest,” Aaron said. “The wheels and reflectors are from a little girl’s bike. [My friend] JP’s niece or cousin or something moved back to Colombia.”
The front end of the wagon is tied together with a bunch of all-natural hemp cord in a dream-catcher-style web, to keep all his paintings and supplies from falling out. Then there’s a long handle bolted down in front, like the one on a child’s red wagon, which he uses to pull as he walks down the street. “I’ve been doing carpentry ever since I could hold a hammer because my dad and grandpa were carpenters,” he said.
Follow the yellow brick road His plan has become a dream come true, like a magical land called Oz, or a great flood that drowns everything. Aaron has walked to a lot of different places already. “I started in Huelo and got a ride from JP in his truck down to Maliko Gulch,” he said. “I’ve walked from there.” So far he’s stopped in Paia, Kahului and Ma’alaea. When he sets the wagon down, he displays his art and paints whenever he can, all the while making friends—and unfortunately a few enemies—and creating community spaces. He’s promoting art awareness in a living art project. He’s getting people to see art in their everyday environment. It’s a dangerous job, but somebody’s got to do it. Aaron was recently camped out on the north shore and I hung out with him for a couple days. His wagon was parked under a tree and we sat at a nearby picnic table. Some of his paintings were out, they’re a series numbered “*” “**” and “***.” All use different lines and patterns with bright striking colors. The area became a gathering spot for all sorts of people. “This is my favorite of the three,” said a local surfer named Brian about “**,” a pattern of what looks like coiling snakes or ropes, all wrapped around each other, in a palette of red and purple. “I like its vibrancy and fire, the color.” Another passerby named Eric said it made him feel “free, open and alive.” The painting “***” is a bright blue and green that mirrored the vibrant colors of the ocean, sky and trees around us. Aaron had used circles, dots and waving lines in order to create a unifying pattern. “It’s got great depth to it,” said the surfer Brian. “It looks like a funky cartoon gate that you might go into,” added Eric. When we walked down the street, hitched up for a ride, I saw just how dangerous it can be to walk with a wagon through mid-day traffic. Cars honked and closely brushed by us, one particularly clueless Jeep of tourists pulled over and asked Aaron how to get to Jaws. Could they not tell we were carting a big loaded-up wagon down the street in mid-day traffic?

“One thing I found out,” Aaron said, “is Maui is not exactly walker-friendly or biker-friendly. I’m kind of a walker-biker. The shoulders aren’t great and the roads are sometimes windy. But when I’m on a paved road it’s not bad, I walked straight from Paia to Kahului and there was no problem.” At this point you may be wondering when Aaron may visit your town. The answer is up in the air, like an ongoing fairy tale or a mystery movie lacking clues. “I go wherever I’m guided to go, and see what happens,” he said. So you’ll just have to be extra-aware when you’re driving down the pedestrian-unfriendly roads for a guy pulling a covered wagon, most likely wearing bright orange pants. “I’ve worn these pants every day for two months,” confessed the fashion guru.
Revelations Every story needs bad guys. You know, like Satan or the Wicked Witch of the West, a force which trips up our true character and brings a perilous edge to their journey. Well, this story is no different and unfortunately some challenging things have happened to Aaron along the way. For example, the cops were called recently because he doesn’t have a license to display his art. They forced him to take it down. An innocent cement wall was returned to its natural boring state, because brightly colored canvases are too dangerous to be shown in public. That ugly brick wall made me want to smash my head against it in frustration. The police at other times have tried to arrest him for camping without a permit, and put a sticker on his wagon threatening to tow it if he didn’t move it (he did). A thief even stole his wallet recently. All his money and

important papers were in it. I saw him the day after the theft, and we sat at the picnic table and commiserated about the nastier side of human nature for a few hours. Friends old and new stopped by to offer their input and we shared a mango from a nearby tree. Then Aaron started cooking dinner on his camp stove and I went home to write this story. If you see Aaron walking down the street, my advice is to be a good neighbor. Don’t drive too close, or honk your horn or do anything otherwise startling or dangerous. Just be nice and give a wave, if you’re feeling generous you can offer him a ride or a safe place to stay. After all, Aaron is our neighbor. We’re all here in the magical land of Maui for the same reason: Because it’s the marriage of Heaven and Earth where blue sky and red rock come together. We get to sit under green trees full of fruit and call it home. Aren’t we lucky to live here now, far away from the black-and-white boredom some of us used to call home? To contact Aaron, buy art or find out where he’ll be next, email redplanetarymoon@hotmail.com, or write to PO Box 791512, Paia HI 96779. Or just keep your eyes peeled and maybe you’ll see him. MTW

Aha ‘Aina is located in the Kooy building in Pukalani, with an exterior that’s so low-key, tourists and other random drivers passing by are not likely to ever see it. Much of their business has carried over from the days when the restaurant was the Upcountry Cafe, better known to some as the Cow Cafe. Kane and Tafoya have kept some of the old favorites of the former restaurant on the menu, and fans of the Cow Cafe have kept on coming in. These regulars, and the buzz on the street, are integral to Aha ‘Aina, since they’ve spent no money on advertising. When I walked in one early weekday morning before work, the local feel of the place was immediately apparent. The waitresses seem to know everybody’s name and ask customers the sort of friendly familiar questions that make you feel like you are part of a community. Being in the cafe is more like sitting at a table in the kitchen of somebody’s home, than a fancy dining room. Like most mornings I was groggy and felt it was far too early too even consider eating. But I took to the task with relish knowing it was my duty to sample something more substantial than granola and toast—those items aren’t on the menu anyway. Aha ‘Aina is for people who take their breakfast very seriously. The cafe serves “heifer and eggs,” a chile pork burrito and just about every omelet combination I could think of. I ordered the egg and mushroom sandwich with Thai mayo and herbed potatoes on the side. I ordered the special that I have been looking forward to eating for several days—the sesame-covered mahi-mahi with wasabi potato salad. My friend got the chicken katsu with island potato mac, namasu and two scoops rice. The food was filling and good, especially the wasabi potato salad that brought out the same feelings of baffled appreciation that the Thai mayo did. Even the potato mac was a little bit different, being strongly flavored with dill. Aha ‘Aina means “The Gathering Place of the Feast.” It’s a name that encompasses the philosophy Tafoya and Kane have for their business: A place where people know each other and can meet over big tasty meals. Aha ‘Aina is inexpensive, unassuming, and has all the local food, burritos and fish tacos we crave. It’s not a restaurant for the long relaxed nights, but for the busy and energetic mornings and afternoons. It’s a place worth checking out. MTW

Wow-Wee started with a candy bar in 1996. I knew this guy up in ‘Ulupalakua who was making chocolate-covered dried bananas, and I told him to make a bar out of it. As soon as I tasted it, I said “Wow!” and that’s how we got our name. Yeah, I’m the one who wears the candy bar head as our mascot. During election season, I stand on the side of the road with a sign that says “Vote for WowWee,” and wave at everybody. Now that’s a tough job to get someone else to do. People are always expecting something different from me. I brought the Oxygen bar here to Maui, and now, I’m making kava go mainstream. It started when I ran into a friend who’s the neighbor of a kava farmer. “You gotta try kava,” he said. “It’s awesome.” So I did, and we turned Wow-Wee into a kava bar and grill. I drink a cup of kava every morning instead of coffee. Coffee gets me all wound up, but kava helps me relax into the day. It really takes the edge off. With the first sip, you get this tingling numbing feeling in your tongue and mouth. Within 10 or 20 minutes, that feeling moves through your bloodstream, and you can feel it in your whole body—nice and mellow. Kava is a 3,000-year-old drink made of the ‘awa root traditionally used by the Hawaiians, Fijians and Tongans for spiritual ceremonies and after battle. In some cultures, a virgin had to chew the root and spit it out before they drank it. We get our kava root from an organic farmer in Haiku. We soak the root in a sari cloth and squeeze and knead it. This releases the kavalactones that produce that good feeling. Kava cuts anxiety, eases pain and headaches, brings focus and helps you sleep. It creates a blissful feeling—not a drunk feeling. It doesn’t impair you, although some say you should space your kava about ten minutes apart. And you can never drink kava with alcohol—that’s seriously forbidden. MTW

[SPORTS] That’s right, all the running and sweating and general exertion that makes up the Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk happens again this weekend. Of course, it is just a wimpy little 5K run. And they put “walk” in the title! Yeah, that’s going to be tough. Hey! I’m just kidding! I love run/walk people. They’re great. It would be a sad, sad world without them. But, if you happen to be so athletically inclined that a 5K just doesn’t do it for you, there’s the 34th Annual Maui Marathon on Sunday from Kahului to Whaler’s Village. The 1st Annual Maui Half Marathon also runs the same day, along a track out and back from Whaler’s Village, but that’s already sold out so you can forget about running in it this year. him, the half-hearted joke falls on the floor because Stan’s sexuality has already been impugned in a scene where he sends Mo away just before they are to make love. Charles Stone III is not a comedic director. He doesn’t have the jaunty sensibility or spastic timing for it. Stone’s best movie, the 2002 Paid In Full, is a searing social drama based on a real life drug dealer in 1980s Harlem, and the film hits depths of darkness and depravity that few directors could so ably explore. The astonishing performances that Stone wrung from Mekhi Phifer, Wood Harris, and Kevin Carroll in Paid In Full are a testament to the director’s talent and his sheer artistic impulses for drama. But the young director carries too much seriousness in his intentionality to instigate and capture the magic sparks of parody. Mr. 3000 shines brightest in its final moments when Stan Ross realizes the importance of team effort during an all-important play in front of thousands of baseball fans. The scene carries all the dramatic pathos of a more serious movie, and redeems some of the film’s sidetracking subplots with a sincere embrace of the spirit of baseball that separates it from other team sports. Bernie Mac has yet to find his niche in mainstream features, but is primed for a writing style that can tap his fiercely individual edge and sarcastic style. There’s an honesty and uncompromising directness in Bernie Mac that’s similar to 1980s-era Eddie Murphy. If Bernie Mac can find a comic director with an ego bigger than his own, and an appropriately twisted script, then he might begin to break out of his habitual comic choices and become a convincingly funny leading man. MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA Wednesday, September 22 Riding Giants 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater This sold-out 2004 Sundance Film Festival Opening Night Premiere finally gets the Maui splash it deserves on the "you-are-there" Big Screen at the Castle Theater. The nearly 40-year history of searching for bigger and bigger waves by surfing's royalty: Greg Noll at Waimea Bay, Jeff Clark at Mavericks, and Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Derek Doerner at Jaws, among others, pushing the boundaries of performance to an aquatic stratosphere. "A breathtaking visual history of big wave surfing. This is vicarious daredevilry at its best" (LA Times). Rated PG-13. 101 min.
New This Week MR. 3000 – (PG13) – Comedy – Bernie Mac plays a retired Hall of Fame ballplayer who has to unretire when he finds out that three of his 3,000 hits have been disqualified. Not wanting to be known as Mr. 2997, he decides to make a comeback seven years after he last stepped to the plate. Also stars Angela Bassett. SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW – (PG) – Science Fiction/Adventure – For all the stunning digitaleffects that make up the movie’s 1939-style future world, the plot is elegantly simple: Hero pilot Sky Captain (Jude Law) and fetching reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) team up with spooky/sexy aviatrix Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie) to find missing scientists and save the world from giant robots and monsters. But what’s really remarkable about this film is that director/screenwriter Kenny Conran has absolutely no Hollywood experience—for the last decade, he’s spent every day of his life working on the movie on his home computer. WIMBLEDON – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – An unlucky tennis player (Paul Bettany) winds up on a lucky streak which lands him in the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, where he falls in love with an American tennis star (Kirsten Dunst) and the two lovebirds live happily in white tennis outfits forever more. Or do they?
Now Showing ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID (PG13) – Action/Adventure/Suspense/Horror – A big pharmaceutical company sends beautiful people into the jungle looking for the legendary Blood Orchid that supposedly holds the key to eternal life. Good news it exists, bad news it’s being guarded by giant, murderous snakes who don’t want to give it up. Hey, it could happen. Sure, stuff like that happens all the time. You just don’t hear about it. Stupid liberal media. Stars a bunch of people you never heard of. ALIEN VS. PREDATOR - (PG13) – Science Fiction/Action – This landmark 5-4 Supreme Court decision from the final years of the often controversial Warren Court stipulated that in times of crisis involving scary monsters from space that drool acid and kill things really, really fast, humanity is pretty much screwed. How they converted Justice Felix Frankfurter’s dry, legalistic rhetoric that into a movie starring Lance Henriksen is beyond me. BOURNE SUPREMACY - (PG13) Action/Adventure - Think James Bond, but pissed off in a Fugitive kind of way. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon at his emotionally emptiest) is an exAmerican assassin who’s tired of killing foreign leaders and just wants to live with this German girlfriend (Franka Potente) in peace. But his former employer isn’t too keen on the retirement plans. Yeah, that was pretty much the first movie, Bourne Identity, but who cares. Also stars Brian Cox and Julia Stiles. CELLULAR - (PG-13) - Action/Thriller - This

woman gets kidnapped and suddenly, her only hope is her cell phone—yeah, good luck—so she calls some random guy—must have been through “directory assistance”—and the guy, not knowing it’s actually Kim Basinger on the other end, agrees to save her family and rescue her. Okay, this movie is just swimming in fantasy! I mean, not only is the cell phone battery not going to hold up for the two hours it takes to save the day but dude is going to be charged some major overage, which will prompt the cell phone company to “temporarily disconnect” until he agrees to sign another two-year contract and in the meantime, poor little Kim Basinger will be switching to AT&T. Can you hear me now? COLLATERAL - (R) - Crime/Thriller - This Michael Mann film stars Jamie Foxx as a washed-up comedy writer-turned cabbie and Tom Cruise as a pontificating assassin. The movie takes place over one night as Foxx drives Cruise around from hit to hit. People get killed, Foxx delivers a few one-liners, and then everyone looks slick and stylish as they chase each other through L.A. Also stars Jada Pinkett-Smith. THE COOKOUT – (PG 13) – Comedy – Think Hoop Dreams plus a little Barbershop, then a sprinkle of He Got Game and all mixed in with a truckload of clichéd characters. This is the tale of the NBA’s number one draft pick who’s now loaded with endorsements and a $30 million New Jersey Nets contract. So he throws a cookout party for his family to celebrate. Get it? He’s rich, but he’s also an African-American who now lives with a bunch of stuffy white people. How do they come up with this stuff? Stars Storm P, Danny Glover and Farrah Fawcett. HERO – (PG13) – Action/Adventure - Jet Li stars in this martial arts movie that Yahoo! Movies blurb describes as, “In a distant war torn land, a ruthless emperor is rising to power with an iron fist and his massive armies. To control everything, he will stop at nothing.” Yeah, distant—try our country under George W. Bush. Anyway, Li kicks ass—I’m not being metaphoric here—so it’ll be fun. NAPOLEON DYNAMITE – (PG) – Comedy – A cult classic already because of the screening at the Wailea Film Festival this year, Napoleon Dynamite is about a red afrod-ed, dorky teenager who sells herbal breast enhancers door-to-door while practicing his dance moves and learning the way of the ninja as he helps his new best friend win the election for Student Body President. This is kind of a coming-of-age story but it’s hilarious so go see it, you big fat turd! Gawwwsh! NOW THAT I HAVE YOU – (PG 13) – Romantic Comedy – A guy and girl take the same train everyday from the same station. Then, because this is a movie about two people who see each other every day before finally meeting, they finally meet. She falls for him, thinks he’s Mr. Right, but he turns out to be uptight and dull. Will their love conquer all? But more importantly, will the audience stomach this all the way to the end? Stars Nikki Valdez and Kristopher Peralta PAPARAZZI – (PG 13) – Thriller – A young, hot movie star (Cole Hauser) and his beautiful wife (Robin Tunney) are just minding their own business one day, driving along being beautiful when four evil paparazzi photographers surround them and cause a car crash, which injures said wife, leaving said young, hot movie star to exact revenge on the shutterbugs. This is normally the part where I’d make a joke about how this should have been called The Tony Danza Story, but I’m afraid he’ll use it as an excuse to take revenge on me, so I won’t. PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT (G) - Romantic Comedy - Another reality-based concept of a common girl who discovers her inheritance to the throne as a princess and has to suffer the consequences, like learning to ride horses side-saddle. In this sequel, Princess Mia discovers that she not only must take over ruling her new country but she’s got to find herself a man to stand behind her in marriage before she does so. This movie is just crawling with backhanded fantasies posing as feminist ideals, isn’t it? RESIDENT EVIL 2: APOCALYPSE - (R) Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Suspense/Horror – Sequel to the first Resident Evil film, which chronicled the adventures secret government agent Alice (Milla Jovovich) fought a bunch of “bloodthirsty zombies”—as if there were “vegetarian zombies” running

loose—at the evil Umbrella Corporation. This movie takes place the next day, when Alice escapes to Raccoon City and finds just about everyone zombified. If that isn’t enough, there’s some monster on the loose named Nemesis who moans a lot. SPIDERMAN 2 - (PG13) - Science-Fiction/Adventure Basically your classic superhero popcorn flick, but with way more style and substance than you normally find in the genre. Picking up where the first movie left off, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is racked with uncertainty over his job, secret life of costumed crime-fighting and inability to have a more or less normal relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). It doesn’t help matters that he also has to put away the wretched but dangerous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). SUPER BABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2 - (PG) Family Comedy - Four talking toddlers turn superhero spies in order to save the world from an evil, mind-controlling, media mogul. And I hear one of the toddlers is up for best supporting actor for this one. SUSPECT ZERO – (R) – Crime/Triller – An FBI agent played by Aaron Eckhart tracks a serial killer played by Ben Kingsley who likes to prey on other serial killers and may also be psychic. Watch for Wailea’s own reallife remote viewing guy and film technical adviser Ed Dames—Dr. Doom to his friends—in a bit part as a, um, FBI remote viewing guy. Also stars that chick from The Matrix. VANITY FAIR – (PG-13) – Drama – Reese Witherspoon stars in this period piece about a street urchin who uses her feminine wiles to get to the highest rungs of the social ladder in 1820 London. Will she find happiness in her newfound social acceptance? Or will she discover that’s it’s lonely at the top? WICKER PARK – (PG-13) – Romantic Thriller – So this investment banker played by Josh Hartnett has a girlfriend who he really loves until one day she suddenly disappears so he goes and tries to find her but he can’t so he tires of the search and decides to settle down and try to forget about her but he can’t but then one day he thinks he sees her in this café so he freaks out and becomes obsessed and now that I think about it wasn’t this Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo? Also stars Matthew Lillard. WITHOUT A PADDLE - (PG13) - Comedy - Think Deliverance, but not as funny. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard play three guys who take a canoe into the Oregon wilderness looking for treasure but finding dangerous hunters, hippie chicks, wild rapids and some crazy old coot played by Burt Reynolds who starred in, among other movies, Deliverance. YU-GI-OH! THE MOVIE - (PG)- Science Fiction/Animation – Impressive Japanese anime picture not to be confused with the universally panned Yu-Gi-Oh! The Musical. Like all impressive Japanese anime pictures, this one involves a Battle City Tournament, the awakening of an ancient evil, revenge, a mysterious alter ego and something referred to as “the power of the Eighth Millennium Item.” Should be a kick-ass show.

Frankie Sez... This week on ‘North Shore’
So Frankie’s nightclub opens, Jason sneaks into Nicole’s room and daddy walks in for an unpleasant surprise. Frankie has to play narc because a she-pimp on the hunt for recruits shacks up in the hotel and they think she has someone soliciting for her on the inside. Frankie questions Tessa, then she sets up a sting of her own. So does Walter, who tries to run Jason off the road. By the way, Walter owns a humble B&B on Kauai—does he own the tenants, too? Oh, and apparently Nicole’s mom killed herself. Then Jason and Nicole visit the B&B where the owner tells them about Nicole’s mother, but when the B&B owner walks back into the house, Walter congratulates her on her performance. Also, Gabe is still hot for Charlie—the bisexual hottie who doesn’t like labels—so it’s a battle of wills between him and Charlie’s girlfriend.

NEWS
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You may not have much actual money, but emotionally you’re filthy rich. Compared to most other people’s inner lives, you bathe in champagne and travel in a solid gold litter carried by adoring servants. So what, you say? Sadly, wealth often inspires thieves, insincere hangers-on, and pathetic emulations. This week, you’re likely to have run-ins with examples of at least two of these; try not to get pissed. It’s human nature to want the unattainable. At the very least, ignore them while you walk away; if you can see your way clear to giving them a taste of your vast internal treasure, that’d be cool, too.
“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Change is the key to our perception of time, especially in retrospect. Months practicing a quiet routine can seem like mere weeks when you look back at them, while a crazed fortnight can take up much more space in your memory, simply because you did (and changed) so much. Keep this curious dichotomy in mind as you consider the upcoming fork in the road: the quiet, rhythmic path will help you notice and cherish every moment, but may seem like a mere blip when you look back on it years from now, while the more adventurous road will leave you gasping for breath and wondering where the days have gone, but have you digesting memories for the rest of your life.
Jason Meyer 573-1920
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’re not boring, but just like every Capricorn I’ve ever met, you occasionally (secretly) consider yourself the most lackluster, tedious, and square person you know. This idea wasn’t born out of nothing; you do have a facet that reflects that self-perception perfectly. But it’s only a small part of you. The danger (this week and in the weeks to come) is that you spend too much time manifesting and working with that one tiny, tiresome part of yourself; consequently, you may start believing it is you, not just a slice of the whole. Avoid this lame conclusion by remembering to do lots of different things that will test your versatility and flexibility, not your efficiency and responsibility.
HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING If you feel that you have been potentially exposed to HIV and would like Free, Confidential and Anonymous testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. It is important to know your HIV status so that you do not unknowingly pass the virus to others, also early detection is vital to your health and treatment. The Maui AIDS Foundation now offers Drop-In HIV Counseling and Testing (No appointment necessary) Drop in hours are Mon.-Fri. 8:30am to 4:30pm, Wed. 8:30am to 7pm 1935 Main Street, Wailuku For more information on HIV/AIDS, STD’s including Viral Hepatitis and HIV Counseling and Testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. In Hana call 248-7801, Lanai 5656722, and Molokai 553-9086.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Things feel more nailed down than they have in a year, don’t they? That’s because they are, for the moment. The important thing to remember is how quickly it changes. Just last week you were feeling like the world was your oyster, or at least rife with potential. This week, sadly, that potential is eroded and pinned under heavy weights of responsibility and fear. But those burdens can dissolve (or be resolved) nearly as swiftly as they manifested. So just sit tight. Your view to the horizon is momentarily obstructed by looming obstacles. Trust that it’s still there, and so is the path to it. You just have to wait until you’ve rounded the next bend in the road.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Your problems, lately, are fractal in nature. You can delve into them, but you’ll just see more of the same, and more of the same again if you go deeper than that—ultimately arriving at the same solution you thought of originally, only immensely more complicated by all the folds and convolutions you uncovered in the (mostly unnecessary) process. Sometimes (most of the time, even) it’s good to pry, and pick things apart, and arrive, eventually, at the root causes of your troubles. However, that’s simply not the case at the moment; tracing your problems back will just return you to the starting point—only much more exhausted and freaked than when you began.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Don’t start sleeping under your bed. Even though someone is doing their best to make you feel like a monster, there’s no need to move in with the ones already living there, nor join company with any skeletons inhabiting your closet. I’ve never met an evil Aries—nor has the person who’s pissed off with you; they’re just angry as hell, not actually convinced of your hellish intentions. You goofy Rams can fuck up, certainly and royally; you can also sometimes be insensitive, rude, and even accidentally mean. But, evil—nope. When this label is chucked in your direction this week, duck; it doesn’t belong to you.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Grudges are never worth it. No matter how you manage them, no matter your proficiencies at vengeance or punishment; they always hurt you more than they hurt the other person. Of course, it seems different, since ostensibly you’re the one dishing out the damage (both to yourself and your adversary), but does it really matter how you got hurt? In the end, you’ve got wounds to contend with, heal and work around—wounds that simply wouldn’t be there if you’d just let the matter drop. You’re burdened enough; brush any chips off your shoulder this week and get on with your life.

ALOHA VALUED READERS We would like to let our readers know that we try to screen most of our ads. We read back the ad copy to ensure that it is the correct information that advertisers want. If you see the acronym (AAN CAN) that ad is a national ad and was not submitted directly to us. If you have a question directly concerning AAN CAN, please check out aancan.org
Don’t assume that your opinion matters. Given who you are and what you do, it does often carry some weight—just not universally. Sometimes, you’re simply not qualified to give notes on a situation that doesn’t concern you; you’re just doing it out of habit. Just because it usually works out okay anyway doesn’t make this a good idea. Please don’t let your established expertise as a moderator delude you into getting involved when you shouldn’t. If you stick your nose where it probably doesn’t belong this week, it just might get bitten clean off.

No one realizes, least of all you, that you’re the most popular sign in the zodiac. Along with everyone else, you probably haven’t noticed just how many people you’re important to (and how many are important to you). Showy Leos may get more attention; Libras have bigger networks. You, however, have the highest-quality relationships— connections that actually mean something to both parties. Despite that, you may feel quite isolated at times this week. Please take off emotional filters that require you view yourself as a lonely victim, and notice how things (events, relationships, families, etc) would fall apart in your absence. You matter.

Could your week be any more simple? Trust things to be about as uncomplicated and straightforward as they get, this week. Your problems will respond to the simplest solutions, if they present themselves at all, and any minor obstacles will be so small you can just step over them, rather than alter your course. Resist the temptation to add layers of complexity out of habit; that’s pointless and, in some ways, utterly ridiculous. Enjoy the chance to avoid overthinking things, as is your wont, and just play, work, eat, sleep, have sex and more or less take joyful advantage of a universe in balance (for once).

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Absolute neutrality is nigh unto impossible for you, yet you must persist in it. You’ve been surprisingly good, so far, about adamantly refusing to get involved in a conflict whose opposing sides are both close to you. Each adversary (even while, perversely, professing otherwise) desperately wants your validation, support or alliance. Resist any attempt to draw you in (and they could pull out some seriously sneaky shit) this week, because even a slightly biased comment could lead to absolute disaster, for you and them. If you find you’ve been tricked into lending your support to either party, quickly laugh and declare you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. If you do it convincingly (and back away swiftly) enough you should be able to avoid total catastrophe.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Your dirty secret’s out, probably to the person you’re least comfortable with knowing it: It’s embarrassing how subject you are, still, to the opinions of others. What they think shouldn’t matter, you know, yet somehow it just does. Don’t be too hard on yourself; to some extent, it’s how you’re wired. Because you’re partially fueled by the faith of others, you can shine in ways that aren’t available to other signs, but you’re also subject to bouts with inner darkness when that belief-fuel runs out. Sadly, as you’ve probably already discovered, this week is one of those times. Luckily, though, you’re quite likely (with the help of whomever outed you) to discover a new source of inner self-confidence that’s totally independent of outside influence.

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
Horrendous and Lethal For there is nothing either good or bad, thinking makes it so. —Shakespeare My friend Elan is a horny bastard. So last Wednesday, when he opted to hang out with a couple of cute girls at the bar instead of with yawning, non-cleavage-showing me, I understood. It was his birthday, after all. Prior to my departure of Elan with his harem, we met up for the Maui Film Festival showing of Coffee and Cigarettes. I had been looking forward to this movie since before I was born—back in, oh, yesterday. I mean, this was a film that was directed by indie god Jim Jarmusch! A movie that featured interactions between my fantasy uncle, Tom Waits and The Iggy Pop! A real art movie that’s like in black and white and everything. It didn’t even need subtitles. That’s how artsy it is! But yeah, it was artfully putting me to sleep. Don’t get me wrong—it’s a great movie—go see it and tell me if you don’t want to consume coffee and cigarettes immediately. Not that that’s a good thing—coffee and cigarettes are bad bad bad for you, kids. Whatever, it’s art. So I took Elan to Idini’s in Wailuku ‘cuz I’m a classy chick—only the best for my friends’ birthdays, I tell ya—where he met up with aforementioned cute girls. Thankfully, Mark Johnston and his friend showed up so we could discuss the latest trend in going AWOL. Have you heard about this? It’s been popping up at bars in the U.K. for several months now and is threatening to take over Manhattan. As if New York hasn’t been tortured enough already. It’s called Alcohol Without Liquid (AWOL) and it allows users to inhale vaporized alcohol with oxygen—kind of like those trendy, flavored oxygen bars only it’s BOOZE and it enters your lungs and diffuses directly into your bloodstream. Scary. “Kinda takes the glamour out of cocktails, doesn’t it?” Mark asked. The thing is, the AWOL people are plugging their invention as a new, hangover-free, lowcal, low-carb way to get liquored up. Argh, this whole no-carbohydrates mania is out of control! Fortunately, the health and law officials in New York are fighting AWOL induction. “We’ve been working hard to limit binge drinking,” said Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano in the Aug. 10 Daily News, “and then this thing comes along, making it look hip and cool to get drunk.” Hmm… hip and cool to get drunk? What, are we in eighth grade? Believe me, I’ve met plenty of drunk people in my day—even dated a few of them—but none of them I would describe as “hip and cool.” Maybe that’s because they didn’t smoke. Anyway… Mark and I directed our attention to a bar regular, Jimbo, who was regaling Elan and the girls with dirty jokes and disturbing stories. He said it would all be featured in his upcoming book, Adventures of a Southern Locksmith. He told us numerous redneck jokes and laughingly recalled the time he got kicked out of jail when he really didn’t want to leave. “I was like a fat boy on vacation!” was how Jimbo described his time in prison. When the bartendress Sherry urged us to ask him about the “padlocked balls” story, I figured it was time to leave. BJ and Rudi celebrated their birthdays last Thursday. So after polishing off a bottle of champagne, TBB, BJ and I cruised on our bikes to Rudi’s pad in Lahaina, where we set to making the most horrendous and lethal Mind Erasers ever known to man or beast. Rudi said they tasted like those orangeliquor filled chocolates you get at Christmas. To me, that’s kind of a year-round flavor, but whatever. Then we headed over to Paradice Bluz with our entourage—all dressed appropriately, mind you—and I resumed my mad flirting with friends, lovers and co-workers alike, starting with Kim, the lovely Nubian queen perched at the hostess stand and Maui Time’s own Calendar Goddess. As she collected the cover charge from everyone, I looked adoringly into her eyes and stroked her arm with great affection. She smiled. “It’s five dollars,” she said. MTW
