QUIET JAZZ? WHAAAA?!

A SERIOUS STORY?

Concerning your article about the Liquor Commission not liking jazz at Yorman’s (“LC Hates Jazz!” Sept. 16, 2004), I think you were wrong in your assessment.  The problem lies in the fact that many people do not know what jazz is. Is jazz smooth jazz, avant garde, Latin, classical, bebop or lumpy? Liquor Commission chairman James Gomes suggested that Yorman’s play something more “subdued” than Jazz. Hello… anybody home? Now if music volume is the issue, then it seems some of the complaining residents at the Menehune Shores need to turn up their TVs or radios instead of straining to hear for music emanating from Yorman’s. Yorman’s music is very low in volume and well controlled. When entering Yorman’s a faint sound is heard. Once seated at the front table, you are in the midst of “quiet jazz.”  See if you have ever seen a more controlled and light drummer than Jessie. -Smiles Yoshida, via email

Your article “What the hell is going on in the 10th District?” (Sept. 2, 2004) has a photo of Joan McKelvey from 2001. What are you thinking running a picture of a woman guzzling a bottle of suds in what is supposed to be a serious news story? This is inexcusable. Next time you ought schedule an interview and photo shoot. Seriously. -Stephen Reich, via email

HATES HOMELESS PEOPLE Despite the writer’s clumsy and amateurish efforts to paint him otherwise (“Aaron and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Wagon,” Sept. 16, 2004), Aaron is just another delusional homeless person walking around Maui claiming they [sic] are either an artist or healer. -Bella, via email

UNEDUCATION? What’s with the kid with the bad teeth? That’s just such a terrible picture to put on the front of your paper (Sept. 9, 2004). That’s just pure bad dental hygiene and it’s really bad and it shows the poverty and uneducation [sic] of the family of the kid. -Anonymous, via voicemail

The Editor responds: We thought about scheduling a shoot with McKelvey for the story, but we doubted she would hold the beer bottle the same way she did back in 2001.

JOB SWAP Judging from the photo of Joan McKelvey sucking up a cold one in your Sept. 2 issue, it would seem that she and Holoholo Girl could possibly have a lot in common. Joan and HHG should do a night on the town, on Maui Time of course, taking turns picking the next place to go. The next day, hangover or not, Joan would write the Holoholo Girl column and Holoholo Girl would write Up Front Lahaina [in the Lahaina News] for Joan. They would have tons to talk about, for instance, do you have any idea how many stuffed mongooses fighting stuffed cobras were sold by McKelvey at the South Sea Islands Trading Post? Where did she get those cool shrunken heads and those little fertility

ehbrah@mauitime.com I guess you weren’t paying attention when you reversed and slammed into the front of my car. At first, I thought it was just one of those things—you made a mistake, your foot slipped, then you hit me. Hey, it happens. But then you then drove away. Fast—so fast that you ran a stop sign and completely ignored a red light. Now I realize that you were a group of young boys and you were probably scared shitless or stoned out of your gourd. But seriously, were you trying to kill someone that night? Anyway, I just thought that I’d let you know that I got a really good look at your license plate. How could I not? It was, after all, careening towards me. So if I were you, I’d expect someone from the good ole Maui Police Department to knock on your door sometime soon. They tend to take the whole “leaving the scene of an accident” thing kinda seriously.

Lahaina’s Best Hike

Redacted!

Just don’t get killed disability, failing health and/or advanced age are unable to adequately help themselves.” Taking such thoughts to heart, some time ago Councilwoman Johnson suggested that the county convert the land into elderly housing. Its location—next door to the Lahaina Cannery Mall—made such a use ideal. But for reasons not entirely known, the plan went nowhere. As a result, the land provides an entirely different sort of “housing” today. And the brush residents aren’t picky about what they take. One local mother of two who lives in the Front Street Apartments was robbed recently. But all the thief took was a Maui Built backpack containing a couple keiki swim tubes and some tampons. The thief was clearly not one of the vacant lot’s sharper residents, and took to carrying the bag around Lahaina Town, even though it bore the original owner’s name embroidered into the fabric. It was only a matter of time before the mother saw the thief with the backpack and confronted him. But he fled back into the brush, still carrying the pack. I repeatedly tried to get the Maui Police to comment on the record for this story, but no one was available by press time. The best I could get from them—the county agency charged with protecting and serving the public—was for concerned residents to complain to the Weinberg Foundation. MTW

Enter at your own risk Lahaina boasts a hike that beats anything you’ll find in Maui Revealed. It’s got distinctive fauna, interesting wildlife, well-carved trails and lots of treasure to hunt for. If you’re interested, it’s really easy to find—just head into that vacant lot between the Front Street Apartments and the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Long a haven for the West Side’s homeless population, the lot also shelters crime, drug trafficking, prostitution and an immense array of stolen merchandise. The notorious lot belongs to the Oahubased Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, which refused to comment for this story about its status or future. County Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson, who represents West Maui, wasn’t so tongue-tied. “[The property] is a black mark on the Weinberg Foundation’s record,” she said. “There is a fine line between being charitable and being an enabler.” I first heard about the lot when my bicycle tire was stolen. One Maui Police officer told me that it was very likely my tire was somewhere in the lot. He also told me that it would be foolish of me to barge in and look for it, as the brush people tend to converge on whichever souls stumble into their

den. He even said something about me being carried out by paramedics if I dared step inside. What’s more, Maui Police usually refuses to enter the property. They say it’s private property, so they have no jurisdiction over it. But two police officers told me they’re scared to go in because of the ease in which the inhabitants can set ambushes. One local resident, tipped off that his stolen bike was on the Weinberg property, went in despite warnings. Inside he found shelters— complete with couches and gates—cars and mattresses. One particular habitation had more than 20 bikes on display. The brush population seemed to be out for the day, but he found his bike—in a cluster of 10. He called the police. They grudgingly came in and allowed him to take his bike after he positively identified it, but didn’t collect the serial numbers found on the others. The Weinberg Foundation was established in 1959. It’s well known for charitable grants throughout Hawaii and the mainland. According to the Foundation website, it has become one of the 25 largest private foundations in the U.S. As of early 2003, it’ market value is in excess of $1.8 billion. Ironically, the Foundation’s own publicity materials say that it’s “dedicated to aiding those unfortunate people who by reason of poverty,

Reversing a policy that’s been in place for many years, your Maui County Department of Liquor Control recently decided that it will no longer make public the identities of the 18, 19 and 20-year-olds it uses for minor decoy sting operations. The decoys—the chief accusers against bars and establishments charged with serving minors, if you will—are no longer named during Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearings. In addition, their names are redacted from official LC reports and complaints that are otherwise public documents. A Liquor Department spokesperson said both LC Director Franklyn Silva and Deputy Director Wayne Pagan were unable to comment by press time. But she did confirm that the policy represented a change for the department. The change came so sudden it even caught the Adjudication Board by surprise. Usually, Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge will read the complaint, which always included the name of the minor decoy or decoys used in the sting operation. Sometimes, an Adjudication Board member would say the name wasn’t familiar, and Director Silva would pass photos of the decoy around the dais. But during the Sept. 2, 2004 hearing, Hedge read through the first complaint— serving liquor to a minor and failing to properly card said minor—against Buzz’s Wharf in Ma’alaea without naming the decoy. When she was done, Board Member Ron McOmber looked puzzled. “Is this a new sting person?” he asked. Hedge paused. “It’s [Jeffrey] Mattos,” Silva said at last, naming one of the department’s more prolific decoys. McOmber paused, then nodded. None of the other board members mentioned the sudden squeamishness at reading the names of the minor decoys into the official minutes, and the hearing continued. Lest anyone think the sudden secrecy is all to protect the decoy’s rights as “minors,” consider that while it’s not legal for them to drink, all of the individuals used in Liquor Control sting operations are old enough to vote, serve in the armed forces, get charged as an adult if arrested or star in a pornographic movie, should any of them wish to do those things. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 22 It’s the last day of my weeklong vacation to the Greater Los Angeles/Orange County area. Wasn’t bad, except for the smog, haze, choking traffic, gray-brown ocean and those bonedry winds that blew in off the high desert and spread a fine layer of dust throughout my nose and throat. It was all pretty routine, really. In fact, it was like I’d never left. Now, Southern California people get a bad rap in the media today—programs like The OC, LAX and The Price is Right present them as beautiful, shallow slugs who walk around with too much time and money on their hands. But nothing could be further from the truth. People who live in So Cal are actually quite dull. Like the guy who told his buddy, “Ron, running with diarrhea doesn’t count” in the Angels Stadium Parking Lot before Tuesday’s big Seattle-Anaheim game— Joe Six-Pack through and through. And the cops who said, “Newport Beach PD: Come out with your hands up” at three in the morning and “Open up, Newport Beach PD, we’ve got a search warrant” a few hours later—they say that to all the tourists. And the lovely girl who asked me “Are you Jewish?” at 2:30 in the morning after I parked my rental car in the alley in front of her house for a couple minutes while dropping off a drunken friend—how many times have we heard that one before? As for that one girl at the bar who, after hearing my buddy was from Toledo said, “Everybody I know from Ohio is boring”—it’s nice to hear that trite pick-up lines exist on the mainland, too.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 23 Fresh from his decisive Primary election victory over “Blank Votes” in the battle to be the Democratic candidate in

the 11th District Representative race—60 percent to 40 percent is a solid showing, even if just 27 percent of registered Maui County voters actually marked ballots—former Maui Weekly reporter Cort Gallup finds himself smack in the middle of controversy over his citizenship, according to today’s Maui News. Born in Canada, Gallup maintains that he’s a Native American which, under the terms of the 1794 Jay Treaty that we all know so well, means that he can come and go as he pleases between Canada and the U.S. because his old tribe spanned the two nations oh so many years ago. Kihei Republican activist Steve Riford disagrees, saying Gallup is actually not a citizen and thus can’t vote in any U.S. election. State officials are, apparently, investigating. And that’s pretty much where everything stands, except for the tiny fact that yesterday Gallup married campaign manager, Maui Weekly reporter and U.S. citizen J. M. “Joey” Buck. It almost goes without saying that Gallup told The Maui News that the marriage had more to do with the vernal equinox than his little citizenship controversy.

Been back on island for 24 hours now, and I’m still cleaning out my email inbox. There were 118 waiting for me, but only 23 of those were from someone other than Vegas Crooner/Wailea Democrat/U.S. Senate race loser Brian Evans. First, he took offense to my use of the word “pussy” to describe his I’ma-Democrat-no-wait-I-think-I’m-aRepublican ploy hours before the Sept. 18 primary. “The reason I stated I was undecided about parties was because frankly, I am tired of the system that votes on the party instead of the person,” he emailed me with no sense of irony. “Who knows? I might become an independent.” Then he sent out a new press release boasting that he came in “second” in the pri-

mary—he lost to ancient incumbent Dan Inouye by slightly more than 149,000 votes— which he claimed was partly due to a page 49 National Enquirer review of one of his crooner CDs. Then, a couple days later, he announced that in 2006 he’d run—as a Democrat—against Republican incumbent Governor Linda Lingle.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 25 Looks like the county GOP is getting into the Cort Gallup act. According to today’s Maui News, the Hawaii Republican Party just filed suit with the State Supreme Court to get Democratic 11th District state representative wannabe Gallup kicked off the ballot, alleging that he’s not the American citizen he claims to be. Despite Gallup’s protests that the 1794 Jay Treaty confirms his citizenship, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Wayne K. Wills wrote the state Attorney General’s office last week saying

Gallup is 100 percent Cannuck. The Maui County prosecutor’s office is investigating.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 26 Boy, who would have thought Gallup’s quickie marriage to his campaign manager earlier this week might turn out to be a lucky break?

MONDAY, SEPT. 27 Got a bottle of Bubba Gump’s Hot Sauce, bottled and distributed by the San Clemente, California-based Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in the mail today. Not exactly sure why I received this bottle today, since the accompanying four-page Bubba Gump press release mentioned new locations, corporate charitable contributions and pride in the fact that their general managers rarely quit but not a word about the bottle of hot sauce. Not wanting to let a good, unopened bottle of hot sauce go to waste, I spent most of the day thinking about ways to test it. But where could I go—on a Monday afternoon in Lahaina, no less—to get food suitable for drenching with my new bottle of Bubba Gump’s Hot Sauce? Then it hit me—I’d get a barbecued chicken plate lunch at L&L Drive Inn. Which I did—pouring the Tabasco-like sauce all over the chicken, rice and mac salad. And it was good! Not even close to hot, but quite tasty.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 28 You know it’s the first days of fall because developer Kent Smith is pushing the state Housing and Community Development Corporation (HCDCH) to back his proposed 268-home Pu’unoa Village. The novel thing this year is that the HCDCH is actually holding a hearing today on Maui. And at the Lahaina Civic Center, no less! Of course, last year the HCDCH wasn’t Smith’s problem—they rubber-stamped his deal without hesitation. It was the County Council—prodded by Mayor Alan Arakawa and Planning Director Mike Foley—that gummed up the works by rejecting the project. Smith has said he’s reworked the deal to satisfy critics, but the homes— which the county says aren’t nearly as “affordable” as they could be—will still dump tons of new traffic at the already congested south end of Lahaina. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD SMALL TOWN CRIME The unassuming town of Greensburg, Pa. (pop. 16,000, just east of Pittsburgh), was the site of two high-profile arrests recently. In July, James Kilpatrick, 21, was suspected as the man responsible for several toe-kissing incidents, including one underneath a public library table, when he allegedly kissed the feet of a 12year-old girl and asked if he could kiss her liver. In September, Robert Domasky, 48, who cross-dresses as “Kelly,” was charged with trespassing (and suspected of identity theft) after “Kelly” was found outside the girls’ locker room at Greensburg Salem High School looking for the cheerleading coach. The 200-pound Domasky said he merely wanted her to teach him some cheers. In Domasky’s apartment, police found cheerleader magazines and uniforms, pompoms, and photos of “Kelly” in cheerleader garb.

NUANCED FAMILY VALUES Self-described conservative Republican Larry Schwarz, formerly a legislator and parole board member in Colorado, was profiled in the Rocky Mountain News in August for his successful new career as warehouse manager and bookkeeper for his stepdaughter’s pornography business. The stepdaughter had retired as a porn actress (name: “Jewel DeNyle”) and formed Platinum X Pictures in Canoga Park, Calif., which also employed her mother. Schwarz said he still believes in the Republican ideals of self-reliance, lower taxes and individual freedom, and believes also that he is perfectly well demonstrating “family values.”

of Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, no part of a youth’s sentence can be for the purpose of “deterrence.” Consequently, Judge Ronald Meyers in August sentenced two teenagers (with 22 prior convictions between them) for three armed robberies, sending them away for eight and six months, respectively, plus some community service. Judge Meyers made the news in 2003 when he sentenced a 15-year-old who had admitted repeatedly, fatally beating a boy in the head with a sock containing a billiards ball to one day in jail (plus probation).

THE CRIME DOG Acting on a drug informant’s tip in 2003, detectives in Waterloo, Iowa, had a police dog “search” a car. The dog started to sniff, and then abandoned his post, but police took the car to the station anyway, where another dog sniffed it and signaled drugs. A search warrant was obtained, and owner Kirk Sallis was arrested for cocaine possession. However, in June 2004, a judge dismissed the charge, ruling that the impound was illegal, in that the first dog never “completed” the initial search, since the dog, part-way through the search, had run off to chase a cat.

OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY LaTonya Finney and her boyfriend, Adrian Howard, somehow managed to become intimate while they were jailed, separately, in 2002 on robbery charges in Crawford County, Ga., with the result being the birth of a daughter, Adrianna. Raising the child has fallen to LaTonya’s parents, Ronnie and Patricia Finney, who petitioned the county in July 2004 for financial support for Adrianna because they say the sheriff should have kept Finney and Howard far enough apart to prevent their mating.

The Sacred Peaks of Mauna Kea Will science trample the rights of the indigenous? As one part of society looks to the stars for explanations to ancient questions, the indigenous culture of the Hawaiian Islands wants us to look to the human heart for answers. The issue is nothing less than the struggle between the human rights of indigenous peoples and the advancement of science and technology. It is taking place on the mountaintop of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. For the Hawaiian people, the mountain is a symbol of their physical, cultural and political survival. For the scientific community, the telescopes that sit atop the peak provide priceless information about our past and future in the cosmos. Should we preserve the summit as a cultural temple? Or should we continue to dot its surface with astronomical observatories? Currently and historically, telescope construction has come at the expense of the host culture. To the indigenous Hawaiians, these scopes have become insults to the integrity of the majestic and holy Mauna Kea. At issue now is the Outrigger Telescopes Project. It’s a key element in the National

Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Origins program, which seeks answers to two basic questions: Where do we come from? and Are we alone? It is, to say the least, controversial. The conflict has been gaining publicity lately— it was even the subject of a new film, Mauna Kea: Temple Under Siege, that screened at this year’s Maui Film Festival. The locals who recently spoke against further telescope construction at NASA hearings held on Maui and Oahu were very respectful. But they were also resolute in their view that before we focus on space we must first malama the sacred Mauna Kea. While the observatories offer scientific insight into the meaning of life, they can’t continue to destroy the very essence of the Hawaiian culture. Mauna Kea is the highest holy mountain in Polynesian civilization. Currently, 11 nations continue to build telescopes in the temple the Hawaiians call Na Kanaka Maoli. But the citizens of Hawaii refuse to turn their backs on their ancestors. They are standing against the astronomy community’s plans for the greatest peaks of the Pacific. People providing testimony at the NASA

The problem, as seen in Mauna Kea: Temple Under Siege hearings asked a few important questions. “Why do we have to justify you not building on our lands?” asked one. “You control the question,” said another, observing the disadvantage facing indigenous peoples who dare challenge scientific developers. “You determine the answer.” “Mauna Kea is the piko of Hawaii,” said one local cultural activist. “Every particle on the mountain is sacred. When will people not from Hawaii realize that our culture was here? We are the survivors to this land. The development is tearing out the hearts of Hawaiians.” Amazingly, arguments as these are making a difference. In the first study ever done by NASA on the effects of the last three decades of astronomical research, researchers recognized

that the cumulative impact of development was “significant” and even “adverse.” Astronomers, it seems, are finally recognizing that even their scientific research has led to scientific chaos. Indigenous flora, fauna and insects have crumbled under the Mauna Kea construction. Occasional industrial accidents, like the 1995 mercury spill, haven’t helped either. Life in the Fast Lane How IndyCar mechanic Wayne Westplate manages to live on Maui Most people try to live as close to work as possible, to keep commute times to a minimum. Not Wayne Westplate. He lives in Pukalani, but works in Miami, Tokyo, Nashville, Fontana (California), Chicago and Indianapolis. Westplate is chief mechanic for the Chip Ganassi Racing team in the Indy Racing League (IRL), a job he’s held through 250 races over the past 14 years. While most of his teammates live and work in Indianapolis, Detroit or Northbrook, Illinois, Westplate lives on Maui, much to the envy of everyone else. Westplate first came to Maui in 1990 for a windsurfing vacation and fell in love with the island. He wanted to move immediately but the circumstances didn’t allow it for another seven years. “Living here is totally the opposite of a race event,” he said. “At a race event it is non-stop from the time you leave the hotel till the time you get back. Living here allows me to train year round, do all the things I like to do like windsurf, surf, ride my bike, play golf and sit in the hot tub watching the city lights of Kahului. Living in Indy was different than here because you spend most of your time with the people you work with, here I can meet people who no nothing about racing, which is a nice change.” He started his career in racing 16 years ago, as a driver/mechanic in F2000. After two years, Chip Ganassi Racing offered him a job. He’s been with the team ever since. In an industry and a sport where people move jobs and with teams a lot, staying this long with one team is very rare. Westplate began as a front-end mechanic on Ganassi’s IndyCar with champion driver Emerson Fittipaldi. After moving to Maui, he became a “fly-in-mechanic.” Because the Indy 500 circuit includes 16 races—from March until October— Westplate has to live out of a suitcase 130 days a year. Westplate usually leaves Maui the Wednesday before a race, then arrives at the racetrack straight from the airport on Thursday morning to set up. During the race weekend, track action normally starts with Friday morning practice, pre-qualifying in the afternoon, followed by another practice session Saturday morning and final qualifying. On race day, there usually is a morning warm-up, the race start and duration very much depends on the venue. “After the warm-up we make sure everything is okay with the car and do our normal routine maintenance,” he said.

“Depending on where we race, the atmosphere around the track during the hours before the start is great and exciting.” Normally the team has a quick lunch before the race unless there’s something wrong with the car, in which case they have to fix it. During the race, Westplate is in pit lane with his team. When a driver comes in for a pit stop, Westplate feels the rush of adrenaline. His job: Change the left front tire. Don’t laugh—every thousandth of a second can decide the outcome of the race. Everything depends on perfect teamwork, so regular pit stop practice prior to the race is essential. “I love my job, but it can also be stressful,” he said. “We work long hours. You sacrifice a lot, but you also get a lot back. Of course we earn extra prize money, but really in racing the only satisfaction is from winning, so every race win gives you that.” Westplate’s team is the only team that has ever won four championship titles in a row, from 1996 to 1999. Last year they won the championship title again. “Winning four championships in a row was a great accomplishment,” Westplate said. “But winning a championship and the Indy 500 in the same year is right up there, and we have done that twice.” Normally the races are scheduled with a week’s break in between, allowing Westplate to fly back to Maui. But this year there have been five back-to-back races. For those he joins the team on their private plane to their base in Indianapolis, where he stays until they head off for the next race. This weekend, he will be at the Superspeedway in Fontana for a short trip before he returns to the island to windsurf his favorite spot, Kanaha Beach Park. Seeing him there, it’s hard to imagine that he earns a living making sure his team’s 220-mph car consistently beats every other 220-mph race car on the track. MTW

dle-aged woman humorlessly points her camcorder directly in my face and keeps it there a while. This is a wedding on Little Beach. You know, like, the nude beach in Makena State Park. According to its website (www.littlebeachmaui.com), it’s a “place known internationally as one of the top nude beaches in the world.” As I was handed my second plastic champagne flute, I struck up a conversation with a man who introduced himself as Sasha Lessin—“I’m a shrink and I teach tantra plus I marry people,” he quipped—and his wife Janet. Lessin is something of an expert on Little Beach. He immediately launched into a blistering, rapid-fire oral history of the community. “This all started in the sixties, before there were even roads here,” he said. “We used to drive the cars over Big Beach, people used to camp out here for weeks, months. It was a real beautiful thing, no problems. Then it got all messed up when the state got PHOTOS: SEAN M HOWER

Robert and Cindy (not their real names) are getting married. Surrounding them are family, friends, wellwishers and even some strangers. The sun is setting, making the whole scene rather picturesque. Robert, looking keen in his black slacks and distinguished white shirt, kisses his bride. The wedding is, at first glance, indistinguishable from any other. Then the throng of guests bellows—in unison—a low chanting groan. “Uhhhhhhhhhh…” Then a topless young girl who looks 12 hands me a piece of chalky, frosting laden wedding cake. She stares at me as I try eat it with no plate or utensils. A few people sit on their haunches surrounding a small collection of assorted fruit on a blanket. A naked, mid-

matter, you know… what you, like, look like man, it’s like, your chakra, the vibes, like, you’re putting off”—but the reality is a group of white people from the mainland. On one visit I asked 40 or so people where they were from, and not one was actually from Maui. There were a lot of California’s, Chicago’s, Seattle’s, Oregon’s, D.C.’s, Jersey’s and even some Israel’s, Prague’s and Brazil’s in the mix. Indeed, the only diversity I saw was in the spectrum of nouveau hippies loafing around. Dour-faced Hari Krishnas, organic food faddists, sharp-elbowed vegans, Rastafarians, deadheads, pacifists, Indiaphiles, American Indian wannabes, Buddhists, reformed ravers, even a few octogenarian ex-hippies. In the middle of this love fest were some wide-eyed Canadian backpackers, wayward tourists, swingers and other adventurous consenting adults. While many expound the advantages of sunbathing naked and the distinctively non-partisan nature of nakedness of Little Beach, it remains a fact that where there are naked people, there’s a sexually charged atmosphere. In the case of Little Beach, a

involved. We had to go through various lawsuits and legal procedures. It got pretty hot for a little bit. After [Linda] Lingle came in, things calmed down a bit though. This is an important place for us, like a place of refuge from the modern world. When 9/11 happened we all gathered here and right then and there decided that if the world was gonna end, there was no place we would rather be.” If you want to see Little Beach in full effect, you’ll have to visit on a Sunday. “Sundays are like the day, man,” one girl told me. “Like, all this stuff you do, like, during the week. All that is done, man. Sunday is the day you can just… be cool. Yeah.” She paused to reflect on the complexity of this statement, then looked at me and nodded. The locals try to dress up the scene within the context of wispy, post-1960s liberalism—“It’s like, it doesn’t

contingent of voyeurs lurked in the trees adjacent to the beach, sitting on the branches like a tribe of horny chimpanzees. While the peeping toms may feel that unrestricted viewing of naked bodies is titillating, it is a phyrric victory. I’m not alone in thinking the human body is decidedly more sensual clothed than bare. After all, nakedness provides no mystery or challenge. When there exists the tantalizing eroticism of clothing, the curvature of the breast or the shape of the buttocks take on a more profound symbolism. Naturally, Little Beach nudists don’t see things that way. “Clothes are masks,” one girl sneered. “They inhibit ourselves from our true meaning. Stand in nakedness and look at each other with the eyes of God.” Such sentiments have a long history in Western society. Dismay towards clothing has often been explained as a kind of erosion of purity. Clothing and

fashion, the logic follows, amounts to the destruction of our natural state. In fact, clothing reflects aesthetic enlightenment. Where nudity represents anonymity and uniformity, clothing represents creativity, rebellion and individuality and is deeply reflective of the secular culture of western civilization. In any case, it’s not surprising that nudists idolize exotic cultures. Whether waxing eloquent of Navajo spirituality or expounding the wisdom of Maori warriors, they romanticize exoticness. “We are getting back to the root of it all, bro, right here, back to the ‘aina,” one nude man told me, waving his arms majestically over the beach. “All this war, work, money, man. It’s all about this right here.” You can find girls with bindi (the “dot” worn by Hindus to indicate caste) stuck on their foreheads, tattoos of American Indian dream weavers and even non-Jews with Hebrew names. American Indians seem to be a big hit with this crowd, as are Hindus and Buddhists. This fit into anthropologist Roger Sandall’s defini-

beat, people began to firedance. Brian and Derek are two firedancers, both from California. “I was always full-on pyro,” Derek told me. “I was always like, just into fire and when I saw the firedancing, I was hooked.” Derek said he’s been fire-dancing for a while and that he is something of an advanced amateur while Brian is an apprentice. “I have only been doing it two months,” he said, “but man, do I love it.” They both laughed knowingly. They’re nice guys, even if there was a distinctly Spicoli quality to them. “It’s a dowel, see,” Derek said, handing me what looks like a staff with a rubber handle. “It’s a kenor wick, lit with gasoline. You dip it in the can and light it.” Then he nudged a menacing canister of petrol at our feet. In the hours leading up to the firedancing, I saw practitioners going over routines. Spinning little balls on chains, bowling pins and various other items that were to be set aflame and spun about. Like anything, there are various levels of expertise at firedancing. Some

adamant about revelers being out of the park at 9 p.m., the evening ended with a throng of humanity rushing to leave by the appointed time. They quickly scaled the absurdly treacherous lava rock incline leading from Little Beach to Big Beach. The path is treacherous enough in the daytime. At night after a few beers, it can be suicide. As I hiked out, I tried to imagine all the people who brained themselves trying to get back to the world.

beginners, like Brian, stick to the simple stuff—sticks lit of either end, moving onto balls and chains, stuff like that. More advanced dancers team up and do synchronized routines like breakdancers. I saw one man light what looked like the skeleton of a rather large umbrella, then balance it on his forehead and spin it about, shooting small embers of orange fire all around. Throughout exists an environment of militant tolerance and reassurance. Can’t dance a lick? No problem, just get out there and move your two left feet and the crowd will cheer you on. I watched one fantastically drunk Mexican gent stumble into the dancing circle and crudely gyrate his hips, simulating orgasm. The hippies didn’t bat an eye and just cheered him on “his trip.” If there’s a theme, it’s No Criticism. No matter how naive, half-baked or contradictory a statement, it is very likely to be encouraged with a solemn “Right on.” Everything was either “beautiful” or “amazing.” The firedancing was the event celebre of the evening. Because the county Parks Department is

“Cuddle Puddle!” they began to chant. “Cudd-le Pudd-le, Cudd-le Pudd-le!” The chanting continued. Squeezed into the middle of all this cuddling, I suddenly realized just how aromatic the world can be. I inhaled body odor, mixed with marijuana smoke, patchouli oil, alcohol, incense and, I’m pretty sure, some kind of organic something-or-other. It was a stalemate. The hippies wanted the completion of their cuddle puddle, and I wanted to leave. I would lean my body outward, but the entire puddle, as it were, would sway with me. I tried a few times, then just corrected my balance so I wouldn’t upset the cuddle puddle and send everyone unceremoniously crashing to the concrete. I could just imagine the cries of “major vibe harsh, bro.” So I just waited it out. Then the puddle began to chant. “Ommmmm, Ommmmm,” they said in unison. After what seemed an eternity several kind souls mercifully pardoned me from their cuddle prison. I guess they figured I didn’t jibe well with cuddling.

One day while walking to my car, I met a group of scrawny, tattered, 20-somethings sitting on the ground in the Big Beach parking lot. After brief conversation, interrupted every few seconds by “right on” and “that’s cool,” one girl asked if I wanted some “work done.” She meant “massage.” When I consented, the group formed into a conga line of “work.” It included about 20 people. Silent, faintly sexual rubbing and moaning began. When I tried to leave, another girl asked me to “hug her.” When I did, I felt the suffocating embrace of dozens of arms.

In the case of Little Beach, a contingent of voyeurs lurked in the trees adjacent to the beach, sitting on the branches like a tribe of horny chimpanzees.

tion of designer tribalism. In the grotesque mimicry of the tribal, western youth only show their distance from the cultures they admire. They are well meaning, but their attempt at gaining ancient wisdom and spirituality only parades their naiveté. At sunset on a Sunday night, groups of drummers began to play. It was an impromptu performance. Anyone with some kind of percussion instrument could join. An informal circle opened up for dancing. People shouted encouragement to those who chose to dance. I sat and watched a leggy Czech girl make serpentine, gyrating body movements to the beat of the drum circle. Then someone broke out a flute and the group was thrust into a jam session. Dancers stomped, spun, whirled, shimmied, shook, jumped, writhed around on the sandy ground and prostated themselves to the drum. It resembled the Voodoo rituals still seen in rural Haiti. While the drummers pounded away an infectious

EMPLOYEE OF THE

WEEK AS TOLD TO ELAINE GAST

Brian Sayer Doughnut maker, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts I’ve been working for Krispy Kreme for about a year and two months. I started at the store in Takoma, Washington as a part-time job, and they just kept moving me up, so I stayed. Six weeks ago they sent me to Maui to help out here. I had been to Honolulu before, but never Maui. It’s different than I expected. I stepped off the plane and thought, “Where are the skyscrapers?” But I do like it here. Everyone is so relaxed and laid back. And no matter where you go, people love Krispy Kreme. Our drive-thru is open 24 hours, even after the lobby closes at midnight. I’d say we get about 15 to 20 customers between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. They’re mostly travelers. The original glazed is by far everyone’s favorite. Whenever our hot light is ON, it means we have them rolling hot off the line. The hot light means one free hot doughnut per customer. Today we have a much more sophisticated conveyor for making our doughnuts. And there’s no such thing as a doughnut hole at Krispy Kreme. Take the tour yourself and see. We start with a mixing process of our yeastbased brew, flour and water, and knead and loaf the dough. We put the loaf through a machine that pushes air out through the center, creating the doughnut shape—without the hole. The rings then go through a proofer, allowing the heat to make them rise, after which they drop into the fryer and cook for 55 seconds. After a flash cooling, they go through the curtain of glaze and are hot and ready. Some then go to our staff for sprinkles or chocolate glaze. Others are boxed for fundraisers. I try to only eat about two doughnuts a week, but it depends on the day. Sometimes I eat more if I forget my lunch. MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Flower Power

Did You Register to Vote? Last chance: Monday, Oct. 4!

Thursday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The RitzCarlton, Kapalua

Did you know every time you move, you need to re-register? It’s easy. All you have to do is contact our Secretary of State/Elections Division at http://www.state.hi.us/elections for the proper form, postmark it by Monday, then verify your voter registration by calling (808) 453-8683. It’s all up to you now. Just do it.

[FLORAL EXHIBIT] This is the Society of American Florists (SAF) 120th Annual Convention where they hold floral arrangement competitions, like the cleverly titled Iron Florist (Thu, 12:30-2:30 p.m.), where 14 floral designers get into a flower flurry in one of the industry’s only live, annual design competitions. There’s also a Flower Olympics, that features 10,000 flowers from growers who have entered more than 400 types of their fresh-cut flowers, potted flowering plants, bedding plants and foliage. Awards will be given, plants will be talked to, flowers will be pretty. See who wins Best in Show.

Ballroom Dance Social Wednesday, 6:30-9 p.m. at Kihei Community Center [DANCE] The Aloha Ballroom Dance Academy is an educational, 501-c3 nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to educate the public about Latin & Ballroom dancing through professionally instructed group classes and public performances. Right now, they’re conducting an open registration for their October through December classes for East Coast Swing and American Tango so they’re having a potluck party! Woo-hoo! What the Bleep… Tuesday, 5 & 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [FILM] No matter what your personal philosophy is this week, it all comes back to the science of it. And according to What the #$*! Do We Know?! (a.k.a. What the Bleep Do We Know?!), it even gets down to the atom—the smallest molecular component—of it. In addition, the film explores the idea that “science as a language of the spirit seems to cut across old beliefs and superstitions, and present ideas in a way that encourages people to examine for themselves and make their own decisions,” according to the film’s official website. Don’t let the quantum physics scare you—What the Bleep presents these scientific thoughts in a movie-goer friendly and highly entertaining realm. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll think. Oh, but don’t let that scare you either.

Martin Scorsese as a puffer fish owner of a swim-through whale wash establishment based on a former car wash place in downtown Manhattan. The underwater city where the story takes place is a submerged Manhattan with red coral-encrusted high rise buildings that resemble towering infernos. Shark Tale’s Manhattan is a city under constant threat of siege by a group of great white sharks that, like terrorists, can attack without notice. It’s within this dark undercurrent of reality that music supervisors Darren Higman (Pulp Fiction) and Laura Wasserman (Moulin Rouge) contaminate the movie with an inconsistent soundtrack that blinks from unbefitting songs like “Car Wash” and “Baby Got Back” to on-the-nose commentary songs like “Mack The Knife” and “Movin’ On Up.” In an effort to make the movie be all things to all people, the filmmakers have planted musical landmines that will have various segments of any audience tuning out at regular intervals. dent in every frame of this DreamWorks movie. But the poor quality of screenwriter/co-director Rob Letterman’s story can’t keep pace with the visual advancements that have been made. Recent foreign animated masterpieces such as Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence or Sylvain Chomet’s The Triplets Of Belleville point toward innovation in the depth of stories available to animation. The old Disney formula that has been refurbished into movies like A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc. and even the glorious Finding Nemo, is a dated form that doesn’t support the incredible visual advances that have been made in the last five years. Animated movies, like live-action films, deserve genre specific delineation instead of the hodgepodge treatment that Hollywood imposes on every animated project it produces. Shark Tale is a movie that panders when it should ponder, and flinches when it should deliver a punch line. No amount of vocal characterization, distracting music or pretty colors can cover up those kinds of flaws. MTW

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA Tuesday, October 5 What The Bleep Do We Know?! 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Generating enough buzz to equal the roar of 1,000 beehives at its recent Maui Film Festival screenings, this sympathetic exploration of mysticism and the quantum physics that underlies the seeming reality of everyday life finally returns to Maui for its encore. If the words of the poet Rumi, healer Deepak Chopra or physicist Fritjof Capra resonate for you, this one-of-a-kind modern Alice-in-Wonderland-like story starring Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin is just your "tea cup" (pun intended). Unrated. 108 min.

New This Week

FIRST DAUGHTER - (PG) - Romantic Comedy Political lies and familial deception? Sounds like the perfect premise for a romantic comedy! This one’s starring Katie Holmes as the President’s daughter, who demands to attend college sans any uptight, cock-blocking secret service agents. Her dad, the President, agrees but then assigns a young stud in plain clothes to follow her around anyway. Hmm... a young stud and a nubile college chick... what do you think happens, kids?!

CRIMINAL – (R) – Crime/Drama – Three people scheme over how to sell the incredibly rare and expensive piece of U.S. currency that’s somehow fallen into their possession. Diego Luna plays the young Latino dude, John C. Reilly plays the 30something white guy and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the white guy’s sister. It’s, of course, set in Los Angeles, because all the great crime stuff always seems to happen there.

THE FORGOTTEN - (PG13) - Thriller - Julianne Moore stars in this psychological thriller as a single mother who loses her 8-year-old son and seeks emotional therapy from a head doc. But the psychiatrist (Gary Sinise) tells her she’s trippin—she never had a son and she’s making the whole thing up. But then she meets another parent going through the same thing so he two pair off to find out what the dealy is, yo.

FENG SHUI - (Unrated) - ? - Feng Shui is the placement of objects in order to maximize beauty, functionality and common sense. This movie could be about that or maybe it’s another romantic comedy involving overpaid starlets and the mindless men who love them. We don’t know for sure.

HERO – (PG13) – Action/Adventure - Jet Li stars in this martial arts movie that Yahoo! Movies blurb describes as, “In a distant war torn land, a ruthless emperor is rising to power with an iron fist and his massive armies. To control everything, he will stop at nothing.” Yeah, distant—try our country under George W. Bush. Anyway, Li kicks ass—I’m not being metaphoric here—so it’ll be fun.

LADDER 49 – (PG13) – Drama – Joaquin Phoenix plays a firefighter trapped in a burning building. The whole movie takes place has he reflects on his life as the rest of his ladder company takes their sweet time rescuing him. Also stars John Travolta as the fire chief.

MR. 3000 – (PG13) – Comedy – Bernie Mac plays a retired Hall of Fame ballplayer who has to unretire when he finds out that three of his 3,000 hits have been disqualified. Not wanting to be known as Mr. 2997, he decides to make a comeback seven years after he last stepped to the plate. Also stars Angela Bassett.

SHARK TALE – PG – Animation – An all-star cast voices the story of a little fish (Will Smith) who tells tall tales and gets undeserved credit for killing a mobster shark. So there’s some running—er, swimming—around as the shark family seeks retribution. And there’s also a love triangle involving the little fish voiced by Will Smith, a hottie fish voiced by Angelina Jolie and a sweet cutiepie fish voiced by Renee Zelleweger. Other voices by Robert De Niro, Jack Black and Martin Scorsese. See Film Critique.

NAPOLEON DYNAMITE – (PG) – Comedy – A cult classic already because of the screening at the Wailea Film Festival this year, Napoleon Dynamite is about a red afrod-ed, dorky teenager who sells herbal breast enhancers door-to-door while practicing his dance moves and learning the way of the ninja as he helps his new best friend win the election for Student Body President. This is kind of a coming-of-age story but it’s hilarious so go see it, you big fat turd! Gawwwsh!

ZATOICHI: THE BLIND SWORDSMAN – R – Action/Adventure/Drama – Japanese flick that follows blind nomad/gambler/masseur/master swordsman Zatoichi has he visits a 19th Century village controlled by merciless gangster Ginzo. Much swordfighting follows involving Ginzo’s henchmen, a samurai ronin named Hattori and two beautiful geishas. Awww yeaaaaaah.

NOW THAT I HAVE YOU – (PG 13) – Romantic Comedy – A guy and girl take the same train everyday from the same station. Then, because this is a movie about two people who see each other every day before finally meeting, they finally meet. She falls for him, thinks he’s Mr. Right, but he turns out to be uptight and dull. Will their love conquer all? But more importantly, will the audience stomach this all the way to the end? Stars Nikki Valdez and Kristopher Peralta

Now Showing ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID (PG13) – Action/Adventure/Suspense/Horror – A big pharmaceutical company sends beautiful people into the jungle looking for the legendary Blood Orchid that supposedly holds the key to eternal life. Good news it exists, bad news it’s being guarded by giant, murderous snakes who don’t want to give it up. Hey, it could happen. Sure, stuff like that happens all the time. You just don’t hear about it. Stupid liberal media. Stars a bunch of people you never heard of. ALIEN VS. PREDATOR - (PG13) – Science Fiction/Action – This landmark 5-4 Supreme Court decision from the final years of the often controversial Warren Court stipulated that in times of crisis involving scary monsters from space that drool acid and kill things really, really fast, humanity is pretty much screwed. How they converted Justice Felix Frankfurter’s dry, legalistic rhetoric that into a movie starring Lance Henriksen is beyond me.

CELLULAR - (PG-13) - Action/Thriller - This woman gets kidnapped and suddenly, her only hope is her cell phone—yeah, good luck—so she calls some random guy—must have been through “directory assistance”—and the guy, not knowing it’s actually Kim Basinger on the other end, agrees to save her family and rescue her. Okay, this movie is just swimming in fantasy! I mean, not only is the cell phone battery not going to hold up for the two hours it takes to save the day but dude is going to be charged some major overage, which will prompt the cell phone company to “temporarily disconnect” until he agrees to sign another two-year contract and in the meantime, poor little Kim Basinger will be switching to AT&T. Can you hear me now?

PAPARAZZI – (PG 13) – Thriller – A young, hot movie star (Cole Hauser) and his beautiful wife (Robin Tunney) are just minding their own business one day, driving along being beautiful when four evil paparazzi photographers surround them and cause a car crash, which injures said wife, leaving said young, hot movie star to exact revenge on the shutterbugs. This is normally the part where I’d make a joke about how this should have been called The Tony Danza Story, but I’m afraid he’ll use it as an excuse to take revenge on me, so I won’t. PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT (G) - Romantic Comedy - Another reality-based concept of a common girl who discovers her inheritance to the throne as a princess and has to suffer the consequences, like learning to ride horses side-saddle. In this sequel, Princess Mia discovers that she not only must take over ruling her new country but she’s got to find herself a man to stand behind her in marriage before she does so. This movie is just crawling with backhanded fantasies posing as feminist ideals, isn’t it? RESIDENT EVIL 2: APOCALYPSE - (R) Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Suspense/Horror

Step away from the window! – Sequel to the first Resident Evil film, which chronicled the adventures secret government agent Alice (Milla Jovovich) fought a bunch of “bloodthirsty zombies”—as if there were “vegetarian zombies” running loose—at the evil Umbrella Corporation. This movie takes place the next day, when Alice escapes to Raccoon City and finds just about everyone zombified. If that isn’t enough, there’s some monster on the loose named Nemesis who moans a lot. SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW – (PG) – Science Fiction/Adventure – For all the stunning digital-effects that make up the movie’s 1939-style future world, the plot is elegantly simple: Hero pilot Sky Captain (Jude Law) and fetching reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) team up with spooky/sexy aviatrix Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie) to find missing scientists and save the world from giant robots and monsters. But what’s really remarkable about this film is that director/screenwriter Kenny Conran has absolutely no Hollywood experience—for the last decade, he’s spent every day of his life working on the movie on his home computer. SUPER BABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2 - (PG) Family Comedy - Four talking toddlers turn superhero spies in order to save the world from an evil, mind-controlling, media mogul. And I hear one of the toddlers is up for best supporting actor for this one. WIMBLEDON – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – An unlucky tennis player (Paul Bettany) winds up on a lucky streak which lands him in the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, where he falls in love with an American tennis star (Kirsten Dunst) and the two lovebirds live happily in white tennis outfits forever more. Or do they? WITHOUT A PADDLE - (PG13) - Comedy - Think Deliverance, but not as funny. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard play three guys who take a canoe into the Oregon wilderness looking for treasure but finding dangerous hunters, hippie chicks, wild rapids and some crazy old coot played by Burt Reynolds who starred in, among other movies, Deliverance.

PUREVOLUME VARIOUS ARTISTS “WORLD GROOVE” On World Groove, many outstanding artists combine the essence of their traditional music with electronica and cutting edge production that makes anyone dance whether they understand the words or know the traditional dance steps. Edesio is a Cuban composer that adds elements of rap, funk and electronica to give a unique update to the son on “El Sopón de Yuya,” a song rife with sexual innuendo. Issa Bagayogo from Mali pleads for environmental awareness on “Nogo,” a track whose production enhances the deep grooves of Malian music to present it in a new light. World Groove is a dance party on two CDs, one of all new material and the other comprising the best of Putumayo’s Groove and Lounge series. —2004 Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]

TV ON THE RADIO “DESPERATE YOUTH, BLOOD THIRSTY BABES” TV on the Radio makes you think of a bunch of bands but sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before. Right off the bat, you’ll hear the moody low-rock swirl of Morphine and the organized art-punk angst of At the Drive In. But as soon as you try to pigeonhole them like that, you’ll be proven wrong on the next song. The trio doles out plenty of heavy bass lines and driving, dissonant guitar riffs but their vocalist, Tunde Adebimpe, puts a soulful, introspective spin on it. When he sings of life, loss and love with such vulnerable intensity, familiar themes take on a new, more real and mature kind of power. The first half of the album is impossibly catchy, hard to ignore, but then wanes somewhat for the last few songs. No matter. This CD is definitely worth the price of admission for “The Wrong Way,” “Staring at the Sun” and “Dreams”—songs you will never hear on the radio or MTV but are far more worthy of mass consumption. —2004 Touch & Go Records. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

OZOMATLI “STREET SIGNS” Ozomatli’s third album continues in the vein of socially conscious lyrics powered by rollicking, good-time music. Their multi-cultural amalgam of musicians (Mexican, American, and Japanese) and styles (cumbia, rock, funk, rap) is deepened further. There are songs in English and Spanish, and their rapper, Jabu, proves himself to be one of hip-hop’s greatest voices. On Street Signs they add string sections, which are played by the City of Prague Orchestra, to several of the songs for the first time. Guest stars grace the album too. David Hidalgo of Los Lobos appears on “Santiago,” a traditional Mexican song, and Eddie Palmieri, Latin Jazz/salsa’s greatest piano player plays on two tracks. “Ya Viene el Sol” captures the bands exciting, unforgettable live performances. —2004 Concord Records [JOE GATTO]

YESTERDAY’S NEW QUINTET “STEVIE: INSTRUMENTAL TRIBUTE TO STEVIE WONDER” This instrumental tribute to Stevie Wonder from Madlib’s twisted modern jazz / hip hop ensemble is saucy and funky with slightly flailing keys. Flailing being good, as far as improvisational tributes go. But the best description comes from Dusted Magazine’s Emerson Dameron: “Stevie sounds less like a tribute than a series of notes desperately scribbled after awakening from a dream about Wonder’s music.” Indeed, Stevie is not at all precise in its noodling, but actually delivers a unique, whimsical urban narrative of some of Stevie Wonder’s most loved standards. Great late-night or dinner music for the open-minded. —2004 Stones Throw Records [SAMANTHA CAMPOS] Got Music? ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY JOE GATTO

Capoeira Fever Playing an ancient Brazilian game I’m heading toward my car at Baldwin Beach Park when I hear the deep twang of the berimbau, a driving rhythm on the drums, along with a distinctive chanting. I look over and see a circle of people dressed in white encouraging their two friends in the circle as they spin gracefully around each other. Each person’s kicks and swipes just miss contact with the other’s body. I realize I’m watching Capoeira, the Brazilian dance/martial art. Capoeira has grown dramatically on Maui in the last few years. It started on the North Shore and Upcountry. Just this January, it made it to the West Side, where it’s seeing growing interest. Fabio Maximino teaches the martial art in Lahaina, and he’s justifiably enthusiastic about spreading the message. “There is Capoeira fever,” he says. “It is good for the body, mind and soul. New people see how healthy Capoeira players are and it gets more people to come. It is a great workout and is relaxing, too, with the music and people.” The accompanying music requires a

mestre, or teacher, who leads on the berimbau (pronounced beh-rin-bow) while others play traditional instruments like caxixi (pronounced kah-she-she) and atabaque (pronounced ah-tah-bah-keh) to prod the two players in the circle along. The tempo of the song dictates the speed. Fast music means more acrobatics, while a slower pace makes for a more dance-like game requiring strategy. The mestre also leads the others in the circle in a song chanted in Portuguese. African slaves in Brazil developed Capoeira nearly 500 years ago. Characterized by sweeping acrobatics, it demands skill and savvy on the part of the player. Interestingly, capoeiristas refer to themselves as “playing” and not “doing.” So think of it as a game (jogo) and a sport—more dancing fight than violent combat. Throughout the New World, African slaves had to hide their native religions within the framework of Catholicism. Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian religions emerged, mixing European and African elements into the rituals, dress and music. Likewise, Capoeira infus-

es rituals from the Candomblé religion even to this day, both in and out of Brazil. Eventually, two styles of Capoeira took shape in Brazil—Angola and Regional. Of the two, Angola is the more traditional, African-based form. Students learn by mimicking the other players and the teacher. More emphasis is placed on the African traditions and the game is generally played very slowly from low stances. In Regional, the Brazilian roots are stressed and the game is usually played from an erect stance. While the speed of the acrobatic movements varies from player to player, Regional is generally fast. Both styles are honored and often practiced by the same school. Capoeira was actually illegal until the early 20th century. The white ruling class Brazilians associated it with scary black people and banned it. Ironically, the Regional approach eventually came into favor with white society in Bahia. But by then, Capoeira had also developed into a combat method for escaped slaves. Until the early 1900s, the military, thugs and gangs all practiced Capoeira. It’s taken many years to be accepted as a sport and martial art with

1st annual Capoeira Batizado Rio Maui Capoeira is sponsoring the first annual Capoeira Batizado at Lahaina Civic Center on Sunday, Oct. 3. The event is free and starts at 11:30 a.m. with a Tahitian dance performance, followed by Copeira feats until 3:30 p.m. A batizado is an initiation for new people and about 20 players will get their belts. Maximino’s group meets Tuesday and Thursday at Dojo Campo from 10 a.m. to noon. On Saturdays they gather at BreakWall Park at 10:30 a.m. to learn the Portuguese songs. something positive to offer. Today, people practice it for exercise and general well being. “On it’s deepest level, Capoeira transcends martial arts, music and ritual and is a philosophical framework for approaching and interacting with the others and the world at large,” states the website planetcapoeira.com. “It is a deep and holistic art form that pushes the practitioner to the proverbial limits—physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.” “Capoeira is now international,” says Maximino. “The beginners here and in Brazil are the same and all the songs are in Portuguese. It is good training for everything in life. It is something you don’t see everyday. Some people come for the workout, some for the music, but the whole combination is very interesting.” MTW

If not now, when?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Intimacy ebbs and flows. You know this rationally, but sometimes it’s hard to accept it, anyway. Maintaining fiercely hot emotional temperatures takes energy that people sometimes lack. Luckily, closeness also begets knowledge of the other person, and trust. This week, experiencing tons of sweet togetherness is easy. It’s coping with its diminishment that’s the challenge. Things won’t always be this hot. Accept that. If you let them, they’ll flare back up many times. Resist the urge to sabotage things because they’ve cooled down; it’s not the end of your relationship (unless you make it so), just another revolution of its natural cycle.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING! FREE Recycling Bins – And No Sign-up Fee! When you subscribe for 3 months of bi-weekly service – (A $25 value!) New customers only – offer expires 9/30/04

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Even some conservatives are calling the war on Iraq possibly the worst blunder in U.S. history: Iraq has no ties to 9/11, no weapons of mass destruction, and posed no tangible threat to the U.S. That Bush stands any chance of reelection at all is appalling. It just goes to show that you can screw up big time and still get another chance. You don’t even need to be charismatic, right, or intelligent. You just need to count on the fact that people are stupid. Luckily for you, this can work for you as well as against you, and it will, this week. Remember: stupid people are your friends. They’ll help you, even if you screwed them over last week (or term), so wait until next week (term) before you do it again.

THANK YOU MAUI! 2004 “Best of Maui” Winner “BEST PLACE TO BUY PORN”

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) I garden by instinct. I plant things and see what grows, and try to guess what it needs along the way. Consequently, many of the things I plant never sprout, or die almost immediately, because I don’t know what I’m doing yet. I’ve given them the wrong kind of soil to grow in, or the incorrect amounts of sunlight or water. I haven’t had a ton of practice at this, just like you haven’t had vast amounts of experience at having a successful relationship. So it’s trial and error. Luckily, you’ve found someone who’ll mostly be patient on your road to intimacy, provided you extend them the same favor. So experiment and don’t beat yourself up too hard for your mistakes. You’ll figure it out.

We’ll both be glad when your ruling planet, Saturn, finally exits the dominion of that moodiest of signs, Cancer. All these undeniable emotions and their (uncharacteristic) self-expression is good practice for you, in the long run, but it’s also grueling. Be patient, though, not frustrated or wretched. Much of your personal progress is pendulum-like, swinging from one extreme to another until you find your place of equilibrium. That takes time. You’ve probably noticed: Caps in their forties (and up) are usually wise, stable, happy folk. Just wait. This is part of the process. You’ll get there.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Be irrational. Your monkey mind’s feverish grip on the steering wheel is a borderline personality disorder. Even during those brief moments when a heartfelt emotion or bodily urge takes the wheel, that jabbering thoughtmonger plays backseat driver, pointing out everything you’re doing incorrectly. Too bad he knows nothing and excels only at messing stuff up. This week, gag him and lock him in the trunk. Pour gasoline all over him so he’s good and scared. Let your monkey mind know he’s only part of the forces that drive you. Your heart and gut are in charge now. Your ridiculous hyperactive brain sucks at love and self-direction, but is good at one thing (other than worry) which he should be allowed to do, as much as possible: play.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) What adorably furry critter are you going to pull out of your magical top hat this time, Pisces? You can’t keep sidetracking us with these tricks. I predict by the time you hit duck-billed platypus (one or two more diversionary stunts, tops) we’ll be on to you and start watching the other hand, the one that’s not waving around wildly trying to catch our attention, and then we’ll see what you’re really up to. So the misdirection is over. We’ll get to see you all naked and vulnerable and human. Guess what? We won’t laugh. Most likely we’ll get turned on. Not so bad. So no more tricks. Ditch the top hat, already.

AD DEADLINE MONDAY 4PM

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Most of what your least-favorite people do is quite embarrassing; they’re just too oblivious, sheltered, or stupid to realize it. Don’t validate their ridiculous opinions and actions by directly countering them. Just give them a mirror, or, better yet, put a spotlight on them. Some unbiased attention can help modify someone’s bad behavior better than your scolding or protest ever could. Let them show off in front of a bunch of people. They’ll soon get the picture. They say that laughter’s the best medicine. In the case of this particular disease, I’d say it’s the closest we’ll come to a cure.

TO ADVERTISE Call 661-3786

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Your communiqué is moldering in a dead letter office somewhere. Not technically. Technically the person you sent it to received your email or whatever. But they didn’t actually get it. They weren’t ready to hear what you had to say, so they filed it away, address not found, and forgot about it. Try again. Their lack of response is thoughtless but not malicious; they simply haven’t been thinking about it because it’s never hit home. Say what you mean in a different way. I have a feeling that this time, you’ll get a response. Might not be one you like, but it’s something, and isn’t that what you’ve been saying? “Anything is better than nothing.” Enjoy.

FAX NUMBER 808.661-0446

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) People are perplexed by your (extreme) adaptability. One minute you’re up on a soapbox making a stink about something you don’t like, the next you’ve acclimatized and just rolled with it. This can look like shallow insincerity to those who don’t know you—to their eyes you just don’t mean what you say. What’s actually happening: you recognize immovability. Once it becomes obvious you don’t have the power to change something, you adapt to it and move on. Set them straight before they get the wrong idea about you; this, at least, is one thing you can change.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

WEBSITE

Scorpios get all the credit because of their drama: they deliver venom in one fatal-feeling sting, when least expected. But Cancers are poisonous, too, only more subtle, as your toxicity is administered in miniscule doses over time. People eventually realize that they can’t take bites out of you without suffering; subsequently they give you a wide berth. Here’s the trick: most Cancers aren’t aware of this venomous capacity, so they wield it desultorily. Usually those closest to you get the worst of it for the most minor infractions, while villains who make cameos hardly suffer for their wickedness. You have control, so use it: keep tabs on whether the dose you’re dispensing is too high—or too low.

Your ambition will ruin you, if you don’t rein it in. Your vision, at the moment, is so skewed that you may look at the big picture, decide that all the problems it contains are inconsequential, and simply tackle the whole thing at once. Big mistake. One that’ll probably lay you out for weeks, feeling pathetic and depressed. The reality: you can handle everything life is throwing at you—just not all at once. Be economical and don’t overreach. Budget your massive strength, and take on one conundrum at a time. Don’t be a (failed) superhero. Being a human with his shit together is quite enough.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

DROP OFF

Virgos like things clean, especially things that are (unfortunately) prone to be messy, like relationships. Many a Virgo has killed her intimate connections with a compulsive need to clean up messes whenever they reveal themselves, no matter how hard this is or how long it takes. This works fine when you’re hooked up with another Virgo, but rarely do other signs have the stamina for near-rabid emotional tidiness. Most folks let muddles lie unresolved until they have time to deal. They don’t have their shit together like you do. You want to live in their lives, you have to live with their messes. It’s as simple as that. Your choice.

Talking about pregnant friends and naughtily placed metal... DEAR HG, I just developed a random roll of film and there you were—in all of these different San Francisco locales with A & S. You just looked so at home and comfy. The last photos of the night were particularly cheesy—inebriation and tears. I hope you are writing and socializing and flirting and partying for the both of us. I hear that a certain sultry someone has some more naughtily placed metal to tweak. My nipple rings were an uphill battle but you are at a geographical advantage. The only time they healed was when I was on a tropical trip and flouncing around in the salt water everyday. Get your booty in that sea, girl! How was your weekend? —SF

ALOHA SF, Didn’t do anything too terribly exciting. A lot of eating, a wee bit of flirting, okay a lot of flirting, some drinking, some shopping, some lying around (that would be today). I did no reading or writing and am feeling quite the guilty, lazy numbskull at the present. Plus, my right boob is infected and hurts like HELL. Awful. Thanks for entertaining me for the short time I was in San Francisco. I miss you! What have you been up to? —HG

DEAR HG, I’ve been hibernating from the world. I thought of you a million times on your birthday— just kept telling myself I would make it up to you in the future... I was too much of a delicate tulip to call you. Hate delicate tulip existences... I spit on them. I’m in the mood for Midori Mushi Mushi sushi in Hayes Valley after work with some evenkeel estrogen—where in the goddamn hell are you? —SF

ALOHA SF, Forgive me, but last month, my best friend bitched me out for not having any time for her. Then a guy I’ve been dating bitched me out for not taking my role as a writer for the community more responsibly. My roommate shunned me for being uncommunicative and a coworker accused me of the same. I also received a couple of yucky calls at work—one from a retail shop owner who called me a “bitch” for not coming to his shop to check out his crap and write about it, and another from an anonymous female who wanted to let me know that I’m just a “cunt” and I “must like getting slapped around.” Where was the love that month? So naturally, I entertained fantasies of running away and thought often of calling you. I just didn’t because I didn’t want to subject you to my melancholy. I also knew it would pass and for now, it has. —Love, HG

DEAR HG, Ouch. Hey, how’s your pregnant friend??? They were relatively new to their relationship— are they still being a cohesive, smitten unit? Hawaii seems like a pleasant locale for bloating, discomfort and overall (overwhelming) expansion. —Love, SF

ALOHA SF, My pregnant friend just had a baby shower last Sunday. She was so freaking cute, walking around in a bikini while her man grilled up some steaks by their Olympic-sized pool. Here’s a picture of how cute they were four months ago. Yeah, they’re still that cute. I can’t even insert a grimace or barf noise here ‘cuz they deserve the cuteness. She’s due the first week of October. Oh, and the nipple infection turned out to be staph. Gnarly! I went to the doctor on Monday and she took a look at it and immediately prescribed Vicodin and the strongest of antibiotics. See, what happened was [INSERT IMAGINATIVE SCENARIO HERE] and the piercing ripped. Then I went swimming in the ocean and got some nasty little pathogens. Terrific. —Sam

DEAR HG, I’ll say. Then again, I’m off to Monterey this weekend. Looking forward to the mini road trip—I spent $75 at Amoeba last week and have lots of new music to play over and over again until I can sing along... My bro just bought a flat—I was over there sanding and priming all last weekend. His backyard is supreme—I can’t wait for French countryside-like brunches back there with tons of friends and family. My bro just returned from Burning Man—he might have convinced me to go next year—I’m sure I’d frolic like the best of them. —SF

ALOHA SF, Well, I’ve got the whole house to myself right now as both my roommates are on the mainland for 10 glorious days! It’s so great—I’m totally domesticating: Cleaning, laundering, cooking, fluffing pillows, watering plants. I love it. But I might not have all that much to write about for the column. Ah, well. Hope you have a fantastic road-tripping weekend! Love!! —HG
