LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR COPS DO LIKE TO HIKE AFTER ALL I was surprised to read the article “Lahaina’s Best Hike” (Sept. 30, 2004) but was disappointed that certain facts were misrepresented in this story. I would like to make one point very clear: Our officers will respond to any location at any time to investigate crimes. We have, and will continue to enter, places where crimes are being committed or where fugitives are hiding. We have made many arrests on the vacant lot owned by the Weinberg Foundation, to include serious felony cases, and will continue to do so. Since January of this year, we arrested nine individuals on a total of 41 counts in this area. Crimes range from contempt of court to sexual assault and drug possession. What is more disturbing is the claim by the writer of “repeated attempts to contact the police for comments on this situation but no one was available.” I have been in command of the Lahaina District since February of 2003 and the author made no attempt to talk to me or Lieutenant Victor Ramos about problems addressed in this story. I would have appreciated an opportunity to set the record straight. Councilperson JoAnne Johnson notified me that she had contacted the Dept. of Health to address health and sanitation concerns. There are several problems concerning this property, homeless persons and crime problems. Being homeless doesn’t necessarily make someone a criminal and we must differentiate between the two. I want to assure you, and the community, that our officers will take necessary action wherever and whenever needed. -Captain Charles Hirata, Commander, Lahaina Police District The Editor Responds: I’m very glad Captain Hirata has commented for the
record. But we did try to get some kind of official statement on the Weinberg property through the usual public information channels, but none came by press time, leaving us with no option but to run with what we had.
SEE PAGE FIVE In response to your article “Lahaina’s Best Hike,” the solution is simple: Gentrification. Use this as an opportunity for the local SWAT and anti-terrorism forces to get some free, real-life training, especially in implementing non-lethal types of weapons and tactics. Have them, unannounced, surround the field one night and go in with bulldozers and start leveling the place. Then they arrest whoever comes running out. Once all the occupants are removed, go in and retrieve any stolen property so that rightful owners have a chance to recover it. Secondly, set the field on fire and burn it to the ground. Thieves and crackheads are cowards—if you remove their hiding place, they won’t go there anymore. The proactive community leaders of Maui can work with the Weinberg Foundation to expeditiously implement some beneficial solution for the community. Councilwoman Johnson suggested a home for the elderly, which would be great. How about a decent library for local residents? That library by the harbor is terrible. -Mike Urbain, Lahaina
NAKED PEOPLE SPEAK The recent cover story, “Naked & Naïve: What really goes on at Little Beach” (Sept. 30, 2004) was a truly naïve attempt to express what is going on at Little Beach. For me, two words come to mind, freedom and celebration. Little Beach is, itself, a celebration of nature. Its clear water and gentle sloping beach provide a wonderful body surfing break that is exciting and yet safe. As I play in these waves a smile always forms on my face. When I catch a long ride in a sparkling
tube I feel as though I am making love to the Earth Herself. As for the locals, most of them are out in the waves enjoying the playful clear water. Some locals are up in the woods spying on the sunbathers. A few are able to let go of the social norms they have been indoctrinated with, but most are bound by the “moral” shackles the missionaries so generously imposed on them. In the case of Little Beach, I find a special freedom, one that encourages people to celebrate. People who are looking for the freedom to pick a fight are not welcome. People are there to celebrate, not argue. Celebration is about opening your heart, lightening up and allowing everyone to express their joy! I love to run naked into the glorious surf, lay in the warm sun fully exposed like a newborn baby, dance free and feel the trade winds across my skin. These are freedoms I cherish, these things bring me to a state in which I feel so fully alive and joyful that I can’t help but give thanks. -George Chyz, Haiku Yeah, hi, this is in reference to the new issue that just came out concerning the article “Naked and Naïve.” I think it’s kind of offensive referring to people sitting on branches like a “tribe of horny chimpanzees.” Whoever wrote this article is very biased and I’m surprised that you guys actually printed it. -Anonymous, via voicemail When you’re done wandering around the wonderfully weird people who populate Little Beach, you might want to stop and talk to the regular folks who visit the beach year after year after year for fun, not to chant, hug or wallow in oddballity. My wife and I have visited Maui for nearly two decades with one purpose: To spend time on Little Beach. There is something joyful about body surfing naked that you just can’t find in the Pacific Northwest, where we’re from. As planned development nearby squeezes
in, Little Beach, and all of South Maui, faces pressures that could alter the region’s beauty and livability. That would have been a better focus for your magazine article, not the parade of goofiness you published. If Little Beach’s wonder is diminished, we’ll go someplace else. That doesn’t do anybody any good. -Kevin L. Harden, Lake Oswego, Oregon
DOESN’T LIKE LC STINGS Since it is illegal to serve a minor alcohol, is it not illegal for a minor to order alcohol (LC Watch, Oct. 7)? Seems to me it should be. With some consequences if they attempt to do so, perhaps this law would actually deter minors from attempting to order alcohol. Perhaps this would be a good law. I mean it makes sense, right? But then the Liquor Control Department couldn’t use the “Sting” tactic, right? It would then be “Entrapment.” These stings bring thousands of dollars to the self-perpetuating Liquor Control Department cash cow under the banner of “Public Safety,” but do NOTHING to deter minors from attempting to purchase alcohol. Save the decoys for duck hunting. -Anonymous, via email

ehbrah@mauitime.com You were driving the white mustang convertible rental car on Mokulele Hwy. I was in the car behind you. I couldn’t help but notice how you and your family were enjoying your fast food meals. I also noticed how you threw your hamburger wrapper, the mustard container and the two ketchup wrappers out your window as you drove along. You didn’t seem to like it when I honked and yelled, “Maui is not your garbage can.” This didn’t seem to please you. So you drove recklessly, passed me, then abruptly stopped your car 50 feet short from the Mokulele/Pi’ilani intersection and got out. “Hey, you didn’t like me throwing stuff out the window,” you yelled at me. “Here, bitch.” Then you came up to my window and threw your Coke in my face and all over the inside of my car. Of course, the worst part about all this is that your small children were in the backseat watching. That’s some nice parenting, brah. It’s people like you who make me wonder if humanity respects anything anymore. MTW

burrowed into the lot’s thick brush. By Oct. 12, the Weinberg lot had changed out of all proportion. Police cars were parked on Kenui Street. Construction equipment was still clearing brush, but the for the first time, there was a clear field of view from Honoapi’ilani Road to Front Street. Mounds of trash and obviously stolen merchandise littered the field. Many encampments were cleared out, but a few remained, sprinkled with bodyboards, recliners, skis and wrecked cars. “I spent a couple hours there,” said Captain Charles Hirata, Maui Police Department’s Lahaina District commander. “We were knocking down all the campsites. We served notices on people. Once served, they cannot return. If they return, they can be arrested.” Hirata said he and two other Maui police officers took part in the operation, which served “six or so” notices. “We used to call it the ‘Kenui Bush,’” Hirata said, referring to the Weinberg lot. “Actually, now it’s known as the ‘Kenui Flats.’” Hirata said the timing of the operation had nothing to do with either Maui Time’s Sept. 30 story or the repeated, unreturned phone calls we made in mid-September to the Weinberg Foundation asking for comment on the future of the lot. “We arranged [the operation] with the Weinberg Foundation several months ago to go in and start serving people,” Hirata said. Hirata added that the Maui PD had “done it several years ago,” though numerous Lahaina residents who’ve lived in town for at least the last decade said they couldn’t remember the last time police went through the field in force and cleaned out the encampments. Since the Weinberg Foundation has refused to return our phone calls, we asked what Hirata knew of the Weinberg Foundation’s plans for the lot, Hirata said they planned to use it for affordable housing—a plan first put forth by County Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson. “Right now they’re doing a project on Oahu,” said Hirata. “Which is why they’re not doing it here right now.” MTW

The bulldozers first began tearing down the brush in the big field between the Front Street Apartments and the Lahaina Cannery mall in the last days of September. The timing was noteworthy, since on Sept. 30 we published the story “Lahaina’s Best Hike” about town residents’ inability to get the wealthy Oahubased Weinberg Foundation—which owns the massive lot—to do anything about thieves and vast quantities of stolen items

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 6 Sean Kaui “Bu La’ia” Hill has been acquitted! A jury yesterday found him not guilty of assault and making terroristic threats against Animal Control Officers. The comedian and Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee candidate had been accused of coming after the officers with a pickax when they arrived at his Kula home to impound his dogs. Deputy Public Defender Jon Apo said Hill was merely using “reasonable force” against people he thought were trying to “steal” his property. Maui Humane Society Executive Director Jocelyn Bouchard disagreed, telling The Maui News that, “the message that has been sent to me is there’s no protection for our officers.”… In other news, state transportation officials say the proposed inter-island Super Ferry will require Super Harbors! Though Kahului Harbor hardly meets the accepted federal Maritime Administration definition of “super,” it is sophisticated enough to accommodate freighters and cruise ships, so it’ll need minimal improvements.
THURSDAY, OCT. 7 Got to thinking about whatever became of Greta “Mo Bettah” McKelvey, the political neophyte who a couple weeks ago got knocked out of the Democratic Primary race to unseat 10th District state Representative Brian Blundell. Almost as if on cue, someone faxed me a copy of Republican 5th District State Senate candidate Don Couch’s official campaign letterhead. It doesn’t mention Mo Bettah, but it does list her husband Angus McKelvey and her mother-in-law Joan McKelvey as his “West Maui Coordinators.”
FRIDAY, OCT. 8 Really bad news came in today from
Haleakala National Park Ranger Dominic Cardea. There was a death in the park a few days ago, a senseless, senseless death. “Park employees discovered the body of an adult Nene goose killed on a road near an overlook at Haleakala National Park,” Cardea emailed. “A car struck the bird, one of only 200 in the park… The only information on this bird is that it was a wild-born Nene and already paired with a mate.” Rangers are linking the death to rubes who feed the Nene by hand. Because the Nene isn’t one of nature’s smarter birds, the birds then learn to come up to cars on the road to get food. Next stop—road kill city. The fact that this particular Nene had already mated makes this a double tragedy—apparently, it’s not easy to hack the Nene single scene. “Nene mate for life,” wrote Cardea. “The death of this Nene means that its mate will have to conduct the difficult search for another mate. Most of the birds in the park already have lifetime mates.”… Don’t even think about talking to me about the Anaheim Angels.
They caught the Big Snake! They caught the Big Snake! There’s a tiny front-page story in today’s Maui News that says at long last, long after shotgun-armed state biologists bugged out, they finally caught the snake that’s been terrorizing… Makena? Wha? “State wildlife officials reported Friday the recovery of a large snake from the golf course at the Makena Resort, identified preliminarily as a python,” reported the News. You mean to tell me that Maui—which supposedly has no snakes—has two snakes?! There’s the infamous Hana brown tree snake that’s still on the loose, and this one? Just how did Maui go from being snake-free to having two entirely different types of snakes? Unless that python was some escaped exotic pet that was smuggled to Hawaii by some rich dude who lives

SUNDAY, OCT. 10 According to today’s Maui News, the Hawaii State Supreme Court finally ruled on the complaint filed by the Hawaii Republican Party claiming that former Maui Weekly reporter Louis “Cort” Gallup can’t run against Republican incumbent Chris Halford for the 11th District state representative seat because he was born in Canada and thus isn’t a U.S. citizen. Surprising no one, the Court ruled that the Court can’t possibly rule over such a matter, and that the GOP needs to find some other way to go after Gallup, who for his part, still insists that his Native American birth translates into U.S. citizenship.

MONDAY, OCT. 11 Occupying a special place in our “This country used to build steel!” file is today’s Maui News report that Kona-based Koyo USA Corp. is cashing in by selling 1.5-liter bottles of desalinated deep-ocean water for six bucks American to Japan. They pipe in the water from about 2,000 feet down, just off the coast of the Big Island, then extract the salt, sea creatures and assorted impurities, then bottle it. “We couldn’t ask for better sales,” company spokesman John Frosted told the AP. “We have no surplus.”… Got a piece of Couch’s campaign mail this weekend. It’s got photos of Couch sitting at a table, sitting on a lawn, standing on a submarine with some Boy Scouts, shaking hands with a senior couple, walking in a parade while carrying a Don Couch campaign banner and riding shotgun in a yellow Mustang convertible. Flip the mailer, and you get the standard charge that Democrat incumbent representative Roz Baker “Voted for allowing criminals a ‘get out of jail free’ card if they carry a crack pipe.” If only she was that interesting... You know, that National Republican Party is one hell of an organization. They’re sharp, hard-hitting and aggressive. Guess they’d have to be all that to have the guts to foist Dubya on the nation again. Anyway, they’re so aggressive that party chairman Ed Gillespie himself emailed our very own ehbrah@mauitime.com asking him—I think it’s a him—to organize a “Walk the Vote” party for the Bush reelection campaign. “Spending a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon walking around your neighborhood with your friends and family will do more to affect the outcome of the election than almost any other activity,” Gillespie wrote. “Thanks again for all you have done, and all you can do to help the President.”
TUESDAY, OCT. 12 Well, the U.S. Senate finally did what they should have done a long time ago. Took them forever, but after months—years, even—of talk, the 100 Senators at last did it. That’s right folks, they killed the Akaka Bill. Named for its sponsor, Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawaii), the bill has been languishing in a nether world of, to use Akaka’s words, “procedural shenanigans.” But Akaka says it’ll be back next year. Hey, what’s more appropriate for an ambiguous bill that would give Native Hawaiians the same “status” as Native Americans than an ambiguous ending? MTW

Uncle Phong Huynh Phong Huynh owns and operates Battlezone in Wailuku. He grew up in Vietnam, the son of a South Vietnamese army officer. “After the north fell to the communists, we had to leave,” he says wistfully. “I was 12. Imagine that, you know, arriving in an alien country, not speaking the language. It was hard, ‘cause, there was all this extra pressure on me. It was like, ‘Who is gonna take grandma to the doctor?’ I had to be the translator for my whole family. But, hey, it’s cool, it taught me about perseverance.” Phong and his family moved to San Diego. “I had to make that choice, the same one a lot of Vietnamese teenagers have to make: gangs or school,” he says. “I chose school. And I mean I really chose school! My mom had to take the books from my hand. Grandma thought I was crazy, but like I said, it was different for me. I had to produce. Other people were counting on me.” He ended up winning a scholarship to college. “I studied business administration. Typical capitalist, eh? When I got out of school, I was like, ‘let’s do some business!’” He worked in the flourishing PC Bong scene. “I saved up my money,” he says. “I came here for a vacation and saw an opportunity, not just for business—an opportunity both for the community and myself. I’ll tell you frankly, people told me this would flop. FLOP!” As he yells, he chops his hand through

the air, startling me. “They said, ‘Phong, those people aren’t computer literate. Maui isn’t ready for this.’ I didn’t buy that, I mean, if they don’t know then I’ll show them. I’ll teach people about computers. With Battlezone, I wanted to make a nice clean place. No pornography. No obscenity. If someone makes a cuss word, they say ‘sorry Uncle Phong.’ That’s what they call me, ‘Uncle Phong.’ I didn’t want to just make another PC Bong. Have you seen these places? I worked in them for years; there are fights, there are gangs who come in and mess around.” Internet café gangs? “You should see,” he says. “In Oahu, people get crazy. Mess each other up, mess up the equipment. I don’t need that headache. No. I wanted a make a place for the casual user,” he pronounces these last two words slowly and carefully. “Someone who just wants to check their e-mail, do their homework, maybe play some games. That kind of thing.” I look around and see a lot of games and not a lot of homework. “Don’t shoot me! I thought we was teams!” cries one kid. “Let me get that gun,” says another. “Hold up. Wait. Where is the key? Here they come!” The games here are the first person shootem up games: Battlefield Vietnam, Warcraft, stuff like that. But isn’t that what everyone is all crazy about? aggressions on a computer rather than each other. There is countless scientific research that indicates that games help with hand/eye coordination. The games here are team games. They teach cooperation.” I look at him skeptically. “Look, I rate the games, you can’t play some if you’re not old enough. I’m not stupid. I know my role here. Lots of kids come here. I am in a way responsible for them while they are here. My staff and me know all the customers by name. We know their parents. “I work with the kids in the neighborhood, try to put out small rewards for doing good things,” he says. “Get a good report card, then you get some free computer hours. I want to be a positive contribution to this community. When I was putting this place together, I say to myself, ‘Phong, can my nephew come here?’” Huynh has future plans. Like working with radio station 98.3 FM on Jam the Vote, a project designed to increase voter registration. “I am putting together free computer classes in October,” he says. “Simple stuff, you know, how to get an e-mail account, Internet and office basics. But it’s important, for this community, who has, you know, traditionally been disconnected from technology to get ‘plugged in’ to this stuff. Besides, a lot of kids who would otherwise be out on the street spent their entire summer here, where it’s safe. Their parents thank me. In fact, their parents come here, too.” MTW
The end came quickly for Bob Idini. His days of owning Wailuku’s Idini’s are now over. The deathblow came on the morning of Oct. 7, in the Maui County Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearing room. It began with Bob Idini sitting in the defendant’s chair, accused of a single charge of over-serving a drunk back on Sept. 15, 2003. The alleged drunk in question was Raymond Joslin. According to LC reports, after leaving Idini’s that night, he hit a car at the intersection of Pu’unene and Ka’ahumunu in Kahului, killing a man. Joslin’s blood alcohol content was three times the normal limit, and police officers at the scene described him as “highly intoxicated.” Idini, who brought his attorney, pled no contest and expressed obvious remorse. After all, Joslin was not just a regular customer—he was also a longtime friend. Idini told the Board he’d played pool with Joslin earlier that September night, and he didn’t seem drunk to him. In fact, Joslin had apparently beaten Idini twice. “I’ve decided to sell the place,” Idini told the Board. “I’m just tired. I’ve been doing this too long.” Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge said the case was “egregious.” She said the law prohibiting over-serving was in place so drunks “wouldn’t play Russian Roulette with people’s lives.” And she said that Idini’s was “also responsible.” But because Idini’s had no priors for over-serving drunks, she recommended a 60-day liquor license suspension. The Board deliberated for nearly half an hour, which is rare. What wasn’t rare was that when they finally came back into session, they handed down a sentence harsher than that recommended by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Sitting alone behind the defendant’s desk—his attorney had left during the break—Idini listened quietly as Chair Murayama told him his license was revoked. Idini said nothing. “Where’s his attorney?” one board member asked. “He doesn’t understand,” said another. Muryama repeated what he’d said. Idini just sat there. Finally it set in. “So my license is revoked?” he said. Muryama nodded. “Okay,” Idini said. Then he walked quickly out of the hearing chamber. MTW

Sales recently passed 1.8 million units for German inventor Alex Benkhardt’s “WC Ghost,” a toilet voice alarm, activated when the seat is lifted, which scolds a man who tries to urinate while standing up. It is a difficult sell for some Germans, though, in that a slang word for “wimp” (sitzpinkler) is, literally, a man who sits to urinate. The scolding German voice resembles Chancellor Gerhard Schroder’s, and the planned British version might use a voice resembling the queen’s. And in the Netherlands, artist Leonard van Munster outfitted toilets in an Amsterdam cafe with more versatile sensors, able not only to admonish stand-up urinators but to offer, for example, anti-smoking messages if it detects that the user is lighting up.

In August, The Washington Post profiled a staunch pillar of the community of Kalispell, Mont., Richard A. Dasen Sr., who is widely respected for the many good things he has done for the town and its citizens over the last 40 years. But according to recent revelations, his beneficence is marred by one eccentricity—which has resulted in a criminal charge: In the course of counseling the many local women who have come to him for help, he has spent well over $1 million (at $1,000 to $6,000 per episode) on gifts to some of the women in exchange for sex, including, allegedly, one who was underage.
PEOPLE WITH ISSUES (1) Michael J. Sterkins, 51, was arrested in Lockport, La., in July and charged as the man who, in five incidents, grabbed girls and women in cemeteries and cut off

their ponytails. One ponytail was recovered from his home, with the ends glued, placed underneath the Bible at his bedside. (2) Among the evidence found in a search of Sung Koo Kim’s home in Tigard, Ore., in June (Kim is a suspect in the disappearance of a female Brigham Young University student): 1,000 pairs of women’s underwear, bagged, with some labeled as to which college dorm and woman it came from, and bags of clothesdryer lint, labeled as to the campus laundry room of origin.
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS At an August hearing in Calgary, Alberta, in which four prostitutes testified against a 17year-old male customer who had allegedly committed post-sex armed robbery against them, one of the four described the incident that eventually led to the youth’s capture. While the boy held a dagger to the woman’s chest and rummaged through her purse, he came upon her recent eviction notice, prompting him to ask her if she would like to rent the basement apartment in his home. He then gave her his phone number.
READERS’ CHOICE In August, Kenneth Davis, 42, saw a wild, six-foot-long blacksnake in his neighborhood in Lawrence Township, N.J., and decided to coax it, probably as a joke, toward the residence of his friend Michael File. Michael’s father saw the snake in his yard and stomped it to death, angering Davis, who knocked the father down. Michael File came to his dad’s defense, but Davis picked up the snake, twirled it over his head, and began to beat Michael with it. Michael File then grabbed a baseball bat and hit Davis just as police and rescue workers arrived. (According to police, alcohol was involved.)

The Contenders Maui sends its share of triathletes to the Ironman The Big Island’s Ironman Triathlon is one of the most famous races in the world. Begun in 1978, it requires athletes to swim 2.4 miles through rough ocean water, ride a road bike 112 miles over hot lava fields, then run a 26.2-mile marathon—all in one day. The winner gets, aside from the satisfaction of surviving all that, $100,000. Watched by more than 50 million people worldwide, this year’s Ironman on Oct. 16 will include 2,000 athletes from over 50 countries. Among them are Maui residents Sherry Coons, Jeffrey Melichar and Aaron Alturas. Coons knows what to expect, having been a professional triathlete from 1990 to 1995. In those years she competed all around the globe. She stopped in 1995 when she experienced kidney failure during that year’s Ironman. “I have learned a lot through the years competing in Kona,” she said. “You can come here in the best shape of your life expecting a great finish, but the island has its way with you. It has an interesting energy—it either works for you or against you. You can’t come here and think you
are invincible. If you have a weakness, at some stage this race will find it. This is part of the lure why people do it again and again.” Coons said she’s now fully recovered and is ranked first in her amateur class going into this week’s race. Having moved from California to Maui last year, she’s been able to train in Hawaii’s heat, humidity and wind. “It’s not just head wind or tail wind, it’s Mumuku wind, whirling wind, coming from all directions,” she said. “It’s gusty, too, up to 60 miles per hour. I have seen people being blown off their bike right into the lava field.” In the last few weeks, Coons has trained about 27 hours a week. Over a week’s time, she usually swims 10 miles, runs 50 miles and rides her bike another 250. Unlike Coons, Melichar is a rookie. He’s only been training for two years. He was one of 200 people worldwide to win a lottery slot in the race. To qualify, he had to compete in a half-Ironman. But a knee injury took away six weeks of training, meaning he’s only spent the last two and a half months seriously working towards the race. “Ignorance is bliss,” Melichar said. “I have never raced an Ironman. I know it is a difficult course, I know what is ahead of me. The more
Next up: A marathon
I trained the more I realized the challenge that the Ironman presents, I am looking forward to it, but with respect for the race.” He estimates that he’ll need about 80 minutes for the swim and six hours for the bike ride. As for the marathon, he says he’s confident that he’ll get through it. During the bike ride alone, Melichar said he’ll be drinking two large bottles of water loaded with electrolytes every hour. “If you are into triathlons, it doesn’t get any better than this,” he said. “The race has a certain mystique to it and I look forward to experiencing it, it will be one of my highlights. It is a big, big challenge for me.” Like Melichar, this will be Aaron Alturas’ first Ironman. He’s spent the last five years trying to qualify. “My swimming and my running are very strong, but cycling is my weakness,” he said. “I have never biked that long before.” His target is to finish at running, the last of the three disciplines. His background is swimming. In 1997, one of Alturas’ swimming friends qualified for the Ironman and convinced Alturas to come over to Big Island and watch the competition. Alturas said he enjoyed it so much, he bought a bike and started training. “It is very different from all the other races because of the heat,” he said. “I have seen really strong contenders fail because they underestimated the need for fluids. Over the years there were a few people who qualified from Maui, and I have always been cheering them on. This year, there will be many friends coming over and hopefully cheer for us.” MTW

Black Rock Burning One Maui girl’s Burning Man adventure
His name was William. He wore dusty cowboy boots and girls brief underpants decorated with little blue flowers. His hair was pulled back in a high skinny desert ponytail, then wrapped in a zebra bandana and tied so that it looked like a crown. He was in his fifties—a tall, lanky white guy with drunken pompous wit. He had an old money, East Coast demeanor but I think he was raised in Texas. He made me think of a mix between Mad Max Mel Gibson and Keith Richards on narcotics. He was the most hideously attractive man I had ever seen. He was shockingly and repulsively magnetic. He built a dance floor of tarp and large blue waterman bottles with flashlights in its corners. He danced in a gangly yet eloquent way. I laughed and clapped at his ability to be wholeheartedly free. He was everything that Burning Man exemplified. The single image of this man enthusiastically dancing in the desert with
all of his being reminded me that my days in Black Rock City were about finding my self within my most raw and true form and co-existing with thousands of people that were there doing the same thing, whether they realized it or not. William helped me remember that love and aloha was everywhere, and it came from within. Burning Man is a one-week event held 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada in the Black Rock Desert, where temperatures soar to 100 degrees in the day but drop to freezing at night. It is a city created on an ancient lakebed they call a playa that dares its visitors to express themselves outside of their usual comfort zone. The focal points are community, participation, self-reliance, and pure un-inhibited fun. There are theme camps, art instillations, art cars or buses as well as costumes that will shock and inspire all who dare to sneak a naughty peak. This year’s festival, held in early

September, attracted an estimated 35,000 people. It’s a long way from my Maui home, but I was there this year. I’d been there before, but my attendance this year was inspired by Moley, my partner in crime and best friend since I was nine. “I’m going to Burning Man!” she shouted at me two weeks before the event. “Not without me!” I screamed back. I contacted my Bay Area diva, Dovi Dean, also known as D, and asked for some love. She offered us a ride and shelter during the festival in the luxurious back seat area of her Ford SUV. Moley and I gathered our best Hollywood Diva/Tank Girl digs and our Costco-sized baby wipes and set off for the circus.
DAY 1
We met up with D in her beautifully remodeled Victorian home in East Oakland. We toasted to our voyage in a dive off Lake
Merritt with Makers Mark shots and three pints. Later, D convinced me to dress in all black and creep over to the park across from her home and swipe six free standing fence posts for the shade structure we would erect in the desert. We staggered into the park like drunken monkeys, but got our fence posts. The next morning I was a wreck. We packed a survival kit fit for three women into D’s Explorer, which we named Billy. Then we drove to see our RV friends who were going to stay at the oasis-like Lush Camp. They had our fake tickets. We waited and waited. Then we waited and waited some more. We finally got them at 8 p.m. Well, some fake tickets—we got two, but there were three of us. It was better than nothing, so we set off. We followed them through the mountains but then somehow became separated. I was tired, but my co-pilot Moley was out so I had to stay awake. Finally we

Local Girl Scout troop reached Pyramid Lake. We got lost, then found our way to the entrance to Black Rock City. Because we only had two tickets, I had to hide in the back of Billy so the Black Rock Border Patrol didn’t find me, fine me, and make me pay $350 for a legit Burning Man ticket. We stopped. I laid down beneath our food, blankets and a thick futon mattress. D and Moley handed over their fake tickets. The Border Patrol guy looked them over. I could see his hand inching toward my face. Then he gave the tickets back. Climbing from my hideout, we squealed with delight, reveling in the success of my sudden invisibility spell.
DAY 2
The day began with a Welsh bloke inviting us to have whiskey with him and his mates. We declined, then parked next to a camp near Lush to find our friends who guided us most of the way there. We found them, then watched our first sunrise over the playa as beautiful burners stumbled, pranced, danced and rejoiced to a new day in Black Rock City. “Welcome home,” many locals told us. We smiled and thanked them. D was in her element. Moley and I looked at each other and took in the newness of our surroundings. We were still experiencing culture shock. D danced over to an RV that was playing some of the sweetest soulful House music I’d heard. We adopted the RV and the boy/men attached to it. We dubbed them honorary House Maestros of the Playa. One of the boy/men then admitted to me that his burn has begun. I spent the rest of the day trying to avoid his kissing me and luring me back into his den. We set up camp where we were and decide we needed proper Gin and Tonics to toast our first day in the desert. As soon

The latest in high fashion and sarongs. There we drank Crown Royal on the rocks and entertained ourselves with crazy inebriated rantings. The storm died a few hours later. It was about that time that a two-story art bus bumpin’ rock drove in front of us. We grabbed our cocktails, ran after the desert taxi, then climbed to its roof and danced like wild women. Our chariot eventually eased to a stop, in front of a sea of exuberant burners surrounded by hundreds of beautiful breasts. This was the Critical Tits Gathering. It was Boobie Mecca. Someone immediately handed me a coconut rum slushy and asked if I would like some lotion on my hands. We mingled. D got body paint, then we boogied back to our camp before the sunset. By now, hunger had set in. So D hooked up the barbecue and made yummy sausages in a roll with all the fixins. We drank Guinness, then received a surprise visit from our RV Maestro boy/men, who offered to share their comforts, candy and camaraderie. We danced outside the RV, sharing stories of home, which at that time seemed so far away. The RV boy/men told us that they actually held corporate jobs in San Fran, LA and Vancouver. One was a high-powered financial consultant, one a chiropractor, another an event coordinator and one was a surgeon. They entertained us in the best Burning Man way, and we danced hard in the cold even though my sweet Maui girl ass was freezing. D, Moley and I decided they were all total metrosexuals. We also began calling the one boy/man who crushed on me “Shawshank,” because he was making things happen. I was still using my psychic skills to ward off his persistent crush— which was rapidly turning into Burning
as the drinks were made a dust storm kicked up, forcing us to spend many hours pontificating inside Billy. We concurred that baking the marinated chicken we had in the Lush RV was a fantastic idea, so when the storm died down we set off and cooked chicken and potatoes in their RV. After dinner we ventured into the night. Moley went to Maui Camp to play with some fire-spinners. I was divinely led to a lit dome exuding olfactory bliss blessed by a 12-piece brass marching band. I danced with all of my being until the troupe of pipers floated away. High on getting my groove back, I sauntered sleepily to my Billy bed. I fell asleep sandwiched between three slammin’ systems bumping hard galactic bass and dreamt of a heavenly vault blanketed in mist, magic and music.
DAY 3
We woke at sunrise. Some camp neighbors we hadn’t met before came by and asked us to move so the 50-foot light beacon they were building wouldn’t fall on us. Then the beacon people fed us coffee and moved our things 50 feet away from the drop zone. It was a good location for us— close to the Temple of Venus, which offered psychic, sexual and mental goddess support. It was like Mists of Avalon meets Star Wars. The beacon people turned out to be the Vanilla Comfort Camp, a group that fed the burners homemade vanilla ice cream, as well as peach and blueberry sorbet. We thanked them kindly, bartering Maui papayas and a pineapple. Then Chef D made us eggs and toast on her propane camping stove. We were walking through the forest of sound systems after breakfast when another sand storm hit. We ran back to Billy like bandits, covering ourselves with bandanas

Man love. It was also contagious. He and I made plans for the next night. Later I sat with D and watched William—the quintessential example of all things Burning Man—gyrate around us like Rod Stewart singing “If you want my body and you think I’m sexy.”
DAY 4
Once again the sun rose. I was finally acclimated to Black Rock City. Moley decided she wanted to explore, so she went to get a Thai Massage at Center Camp. D and I stayed, enthralled watching William. The chiropractor asked me what I thought William did for a day job. “William is God,” I said without hesitation. “There would be no other way for God to come back unless in cowboy boots and panties.” He giggled and agreed. As we sat, a dust devil suddenly materialized, picked up the umbrella I was using for shade, spun it around the air and then carried it off into the next camp like Mary Poppins. We danced all day and laughed and embraced the limitless possibility of uninhibited liberty. Fantastically gorgeous folks floated by like a parade of pageant queens and kings on art cars while perfectly perfect Playa people played precariously preposterous pandemonium. It was divine. After laughing the day away I began to feel the weight of my exhausted dirtiness. Moley and I decided to find a solar shower to cleanse ourselves of our societal roles and be baptized newborn baby burners. After the shower I fell into a sleep-deprived coma. Moley then ventured off to be a part of the Man Burning—the most famous part of the festival. She later described it as an intense, tribal celebration of chaos and joyful release. I missed the Man Burn but didn’t mind. Mayhem was never my bag.

Man on fire I’d enjoyed the best sleep of my life, even if Shawshank had stood me up.
DAY 5
Moley and I started the day—our last at the festival—by heading to Center Camp for some Bond Girl-type investigation. That’s where we met Random—his real name, apparently—and discussed the disk-shaped clocklike structure hanging from his neck. My notes are fuzzy on this point but I think he called it a “gyro astrosphere.” No, maybe it was a “planetspheric astro gyronomicdisc.” Could have been a “spherical astronomicgyronorb.” Look, whatever he called it, it was a clock timepiece disk thing that told the time as well as the current astrological sign. We liked Random. Then Moley met a young gentleman who said Burning Man was an “eco-chamber of the soul.” When I asked him what he did for a living, he said he was a 34-year-old writer for the New York Daily News. Back at our Shangri La, we ate tasty meat nuggets that sweet D had made. I also
got a visit from Shawshank, who apologized profusely for standing me up. I don’t know if it was the heat or the leftover enjoyment of the day before, but I didn’t care. I forgave him and fell head over heels in Burning Man love. The ladies decided that we would adopt Shawshank. We agreed to stay in touch. Our farewell soundtrack was hardcore, old school drum and bass as the ladies and I danced to Lush Camp. On the way, a 50-year-old chap named Moose asked us where we were headed. I said we were going to the Astroturf. “Sounds sexy,” he said. “Can I come?” “Um, sure!” We followed the hypnotic beats and ended up sitting under a lovely dome tent on our sexy astroturf next to an artificial rock pond with plastic lilies. We drank Guinness. Moose said he was a facilitator of technology systems at some company. He also said Burning Man was the most amazing place in the world because it was the ultimate “environment of expression.” D returned cheerfully from the dance floor sweating and smiling, bringing an

The Temple, pre-conflagration old friend of ours named Tim-I. He was wearing a blue tutu that exposed his ass and a pink veil adorned with synthetic white flowers. He carried a bag of Hawaiian Style chips. Tim-I said coming to Burning Man was about embracing your “royal self,” while still being someone who held a nine-to-five job. He said all echelons of society were able to co-exist within a harsh environment together by applying “self-sustainability within a disposable community.” He then said that Burning Man allowed us to get to the “roots of technology” because the festival was a technologically advanced world within a purely natural environment. We spent the evening packing and waiting for the burning of the Temple of Stars. Created by the artist David Best, the Temple took four months to build. It was finally finished about 48 hours before it was to be destroyed. Around 8 p.m. we walked to the middle of the playa, following a parade of lit art vehicles. People marched slowly to the structure, which was as exquisite and lovely as lace. It sat like a vestal virgin in the

midst of the black desert sky’s backdrop, surrounded by tired but happy burners. D, Moley and I walked silently to the Temple and waited for them to begin. I think they might have been on Maui time because we waited quite a while. When it finally went up in flames I swear I felt the spirit. I crouched down to pray, giving thanks for all my blessings, even the ones that hurt. Everyone was mostly silent. As volunteers began taking everything down—it could take them as long as a month to finally get Black Rock Desert completely restored—we piled into Billy and headed to a shower and buffet in Reno. I drove. Rolling down the window, I breathed in my last breath of playa dust and smiled, knowing that if it ever went down and everyone needed to come together and live off the earth, that we could do it and we would still look damn good doing it, too. Val Akana Kitchen Manager, Anthony’s Coffee Company, Paia Some of my most favorite and memorable customers include surfers Laird Hamilton and Gerry Lopez. I have also served musician Carlos Santana. One of my favorite customers, Steven Tyler, came into the kitchen once and kissed me! What lips! I’ve been working for Anthony’s Coffee Co. for four and a half years. Many people don’t realize Anthony’s has great food in addition to roasting our own coffee beans and having great coffee. And you get a lot of food for your money. Some favorite unique and tasty highlights of our menu include five different types of eggs benedict with your choice of kalua pork benedict, benedict Arnold—with turkey and avocado—salmon lox benedict, and ‘fresh catch of the day’ benedict. We don’t fry any of our eggs. It’s either scrambled or poached. People also love our French toast with all the fixins and Roselani ice cream, too. I like it when people have a big smile and are stoked on my food. I was born and raised here on Maui, in Haiku, and pursued my interest in cooking when I attended culinary school in 1990 at Kapiolani Community College. Since then I’ve had various other jobs including working at a noni farm before I began working at Anthony’s. On an average day we come in at 5:30 a.m. after the counter crew comes in and starts brewing the coffee at 5:15, thank God! The first thing we do is start boiling the potatoes and cooking eggs and bacon for breakfast. Lunch starts at 11 and features all types of fresh and generously portioned sandwiches, and then the kitchen closes at 2 p.m. We also pack picnic lunches for the road to Hana and keep fresh sandwich wraps ready to go in our cooler. We serve a wide variety of customers here in Paia. Our daily customers include tourists, the homeless, attorneys, realtors and world-class athletes. We know all the regular customers and always notice when they leave the island for any amount of time. MTW

DJ Mark Farina Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s Nightclub, Kihei [MUSIC] Mark Farina is famous for the fungus. More specifically, the “downtempo hip-hop sub-groove with jazzy, dubby elements” he calls Mushroom Jazz. Since the late ‘80s, Farina has been spinning the deep and funky house sound of Chicago (where he’s from) and the acid jazz of San Francisco (where he now lives) at clubs, raves and lounges worldwide. “I look at my job as a modern day traveling minstrel,” says Mark Farina on his official website, www.markfarina.net, “to bring new music to as many places as I can, and expose obscure records that, otherwise, might go hidden.” Hmm... kinda like a hidden fungus among us, maybe?! Anyway, get that fungal fever and check out one of the top DJs on the planet this weekend! Farina’s lineup on Friday will also include local DJs G-spot, Daniel J and Ikon. Tickets are $15 pre-sale at Request Records in Wailuku, or $20 at Hapa’s the night of the show. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Outfoxed!
Bangarra
Friday, 7 p.m., Ka Lama Building Room 103 at MCC
Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [DANCE] As part of the Pacific Connections Series, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center is hosting an Aboriginal dance troupe, Bangarra (pictured left). Not just contemporary dance theater, Bangarra promises to present an edgy, unique and spiritual, theatrical and cultural experience, which belies a reverence for traditional, ancient roots with a fresh, modern style. It’s visual poetry, baby, yeah. Be prepared to be mesmerized… For tickets ($10-$25), call 242-7469.
[FILM/POLITICAL] Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism is an entertaining though largely unsurprising documentary on the “fair and balanced’ Fox Network. Made by Robert Greenwald, whose previous aciddripping docs include Uncovered on the deceptive run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq and Unprecedented, which laid out the insanity of the 2000 presidential election, Outfoxed uses internal Fox emails and whistleblowers to show that the network actually skews its news toward Republican Party interests. While the movie lays out its case in blistering detail, you have to wonder whether anyone still takes Fox’s “We report, you decide” mantra seriously. The network is insanely popular, but is it really because viewers think quasi-fascist guys like Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly are giving them the straight skinny? Alas, Outfoxed has no answer. THURSDAY
Healthy Hawaii Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Lahaina Cannery Mall [FITNESS] This “positive living” expo features demos on feng shui, yoga, aromatherapy, nutrition and all types of alternative healing practices, as well as tarot, palm and intuitive readings—I guess it’s healthy to want to know your future’s in the palm of your hand, right? Ha ha. Anyway, professional psychic Liah Howard will do the whole trance-and-channel thing at 11 a.m. from the “higher realms” of Native American, Angelic, Galactic, Indian and Devic [that’s Fairy, for you non-higher-realm-speaking individuals]. Also, don’t miss the “Mr. and Ms. Maui 2004” bodybuilding/figure contest at 4 p.m. with the 2004 Natural Hawaiian Islands Bodybuilding Champion, Roland Ho (pictured right) as the celebrity guest poser. For more info or to register as a bodybuilding contestant—you go, boy/girl!—call Leo at 250-6265, Mary at 281-7645 or Eric at 669-9091.

Voyaging Chronicles Saturday, noon at Borders Books in Kahului [BOOKSIGNING] Author Tere Batham sailed for 14 months across 10,000 miles to New Zealand. Also onboard are Batham’s husband and a beautiful Japanese girl escaping an arranged marriage. Along the way, the trio encounters such marvels as a torch-lit midnight festival at Kompira San, the ruins of megalithic Nan Madol, an ancient South Sea Island culture verging on extinction, temple-strewn islands, volcanic coastlines and a deadly crocodile attack. Cruising Japan to New Zealand: The Voyage of the Sea Quest certainly sounds like an interesting travel narrative—far better than my Uncle Stan’s recount of his summer trip to Hoboken anyway. And he even brought beer steins shaped like Frank Sinatra’s head, too. For more info, call 877-6160.

Saturday, 7 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [DANCE] This fifth annual concert with mele, oli and traditional hula showcases the award-winning talents of Kaumaka’iwa ‘Lopaka’ Kanaka’ole, Hapa and Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka. This year’s theme takes the audience “into the forested lands of upcountry Maui to reawaken the spirit of a Maui that once was… and must be again.” For tickets ($30), call 242-7469.
An Evening with Mayor Harry Wednesday, 5:30-8 p.m. in the Pa’ina Building dining room at MCC [POLITICAL] Harry Kim has been mayor of the Big Island since 2000. His first campaign was notable for more than the fact that he’d never run for office before—fighting all conventional wisdom about American political campaigns, Kim refused to accept contributions in excess of $10. He’s a Republican, but his governing style has been straight independent. And now he’s coming to Maui, to be the featured speaker at the free rally “Lucky We Live Hawaii—A Night of Serious Fun.” Sponsored by the Ohana Coalition, the event will feature Kim, our own Mayor Alan Arakawa, local Ohana-endorsed candidates, music as well as light pupus and beverages. A Home at the End of the World 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Colin Farrell, Robin Wright Penn, Sissy Spacek and Dallas Roberts star in the latest film, from the mind of author/screenwriter Michael Cunningham (The Hours), that chronicles through the lives of two childhood friends what we mean by love, commitment and loyalty. And, perhaps most importantly, it re-examines the idea of family, and in doing so shows us its very essence and the ways in which that essence can be redefined. "How many movies these days leave you wanting more? This funny and heartfelt film is a small treasure" (Rolling Stone). Rated R. 120 min.
New This Week GARDEN STATE - R - Comedy, Drama, Romance - A antidepressent-medicated 20something guy (Zach Braff) living in L.A. as an actor returns to his New Jersey home for his mother’s funeral. Meeting up with his childhood friends and fears, he confronts the issues that have catapulted him into the land of malaise and ennui. Along the way, he also meets a girl (Natalie Portman) with issues of her own, who helps him to see the world with un-medicated eyes. Basically, it’s a journey of self-discovery but not quite that hokey-sounding. So, okay, this movie was one of the best we’ve seen this year—at the Wailea Film Festival—so just go see it. TAE GUKGI: BROTHERHOOD OF WAR – (R) – Action/Adventure/Art/Foreign/Drama – This is a Korean film about two Korean brothers who get drafted and have to fight in the Korean War. It looks promising, but its plotline of older-brothertries-to-protect-younger-brother from the horrors of war is pretty thin. But like all recent war films, it has “graphic depictions of war violence,” which means it should be pretty entertaining. And entertainment is what war’s all about, right? TEAM AMERICA – (R) – Action/Adventure, Comedy/Puppet show – This action movie with puppets tells the story of an elite band of anti-terrorist commandoes who attempt to rid the world of evildoers. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone—the makers of South Park, BASEketball and Orgazmo—the film should have plenty of subtle humor and light-hearted fun. Word has it they had to cut a golden shower scene to keep the movie Rated R. Woohoo—great reason to buy the DVD! WE DON’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE - R Drama/Romance - Two couples (Naomi Watts and Peter Krause, Laura Dern and Mark Ruffalo), who have all been close friends for a long time, find their lives changing when two of them have an affair. Naughty, naughty couples.
Now Showing ALIEN VS. PREDATOR - (PG13) – Science Fiction/Action – This landmark 5-4 Supreme Court decision from the final years of the often controversial Warren Court stipulated that in times of crisis involving scary monsters from space that drool acid and kill things really, really fast, humanity is pretty much screwed. How they converted Justice Felix Frankfurter’s dry, legalistic rhetoric into a movie starring Lance Henriksen is beyond me. CRIMINAL – (R) – Crime/Drama – Three people scheme over how to sell the incredibly rare and expensive piece of U.S. currency that’s somehow fallen into their possession. Diego Luna plays the young Latino dude, John C. Reilly plays the 30something white guy and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the white guy’s sister. It’s, of course, set in Los Angeles, because all the great crime stuff always seems to happen there. FENG SHUI - (Unrated) - ? - Feng Shui is the placement of objects in order to maximize beauty, functionality and common sense. This movie could be about that or maybe it’s another roman-

THE FORGOTTEN - (PG13) - Thriller - Julianne Moore stars in this psychological thriller as a single mother who loses her 8-year-old son and seeks emotional therapy from a head doc. But the psychiatrist (Gary Sinise) tells her she’s trippin—she never had a son and she’s making the whole thing up. But then she meets another parent going through the same thing so he two pair off to find out what the dealy is, yo. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – PG 13 – Drama – Think Any Given Sunday, but two days earlier and with high school jocks instead of pros. This sports movie chronicles the highs and lows experienced by the 1988 Permian High Panthers of Odessa, Texas. Critics are supposedly calling it one of the greatest football movies ever, but I don’t see how it will ever top Gus, the 1976 Don Knotts/Tim Conway masterpiece about a Yugoslavian mule that got drafted as a field goal kicker. Stars Billy Bob Thornton as the coach and Derek Luke as some guy. LADDER 49 – (PG13) – Drama – Joaquin Phoenix plays a firefighter trapped in a burning building. The whole movie takes place has he reflects on his life as the rest of his ladder company takes their sweet time rescuing him. Also stars John Travolta as the fire chief. MR. 3000 – (PG13) – Comedy – Bernie Mac plays a retired Hall of Fame ballplayer who has to unretire when he finds out that three of his 3,000 hits have been disqualified. Not wanting to be known as Mr. 2997, he decides to make a comeback seven years after he last stepped to the plate. Also stars Angela Bassett. NAPOLEON DYNAMITE – (PG) – Comedy – A cult classic already because of the screening at the Wailea Film Festival this year, Napoleon Dynamite is about a red afro-ed, dorky teenager who sells herbal breast enhancers door-to-door while practicing his dance moves and learning the way of the ninja as he helps his new best friend win the election for Student Body President. This is kind of a coming-of-age story but it’s hilarious so go see it, you big fat turd! Gawwwsh! RAISE YOUR VOICE - (PG) - Drama - Isn’t Hilary Duff, like, 40 by now? Well here she is again, playing a teenage girl from a small town, only instead of a goofy romantic comedy, she’s doing a goofy romantic drama about her summer in a Los Angeles performing arts school following the death of her supportive older brother. RESIDENT EVIL 2: APOCALYPSE - (R) Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Suspense/Horror – Sequel to the first Resident Evil film, which chronicled the adventures secret government agent Alice (Milla Jovovich) had fighting a bunch of “bloodthirsty zombies”—as if there were “vegetarian zombies” running loose—at the evil Umbrella Corporation. This movie takes place the next day, when Alice escapes to Raccoon City and finds just about everyone zombified. If that isn’t enough, there’s some monster on the loose named Nemesis who moans a lot. SHALL WE DANCE? – (PG13) – Drama, Musical This movie reads like an after-hours flick on cable: “An overworked Chicago accountant (Richard Gere), tired of the boring routine that his life has become, sees a beautiful dance teacher (Jennifer Lopez) through a window and decides to get to know her better, and as the joy of dancing enters his life, he discovers that it might just be the secret to saving his troubled marriage...” (Greg’s Previews, Yahoo Movies!) and gets famous. There’s a shark that gets killed and some running—er, swimming—around as the shark family seeks retribution. There’s also a love triangle involving the little fish, a hot fish voiced by Angelina Jolie and a sweet fish voiced by Renee Zelleweger. Other voices by Robert De Niro and Jack Black. SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW – (PG) – Science Fiction/Adventure – For all the stunning digital-effects that make up the movie’s 1939-style future world, the plot is elegantly simple: Hero pilot Sky Captain (Jude Law) and fetching reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) team up with spooky/sexy aviatrix Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie) to find missing scientists and save the world from giant robots and monsters. But what’s really remarkable about this film is that director/screenwriter Kenny Conran has absolutely no Hollywood experience—for the last decade, he’s spent every day of his life working on the movie on his home computer. TAXI – (PG13) – Action, Adventure, Comedy, Crime – At last, some Hollywood genius has finally made a movie about that beloved 1970s television situation comedy Taxi. I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited to see Jim and Latka and all the rest on the big screen… what? Oh, I guess this is something different, starring Jimmy Fallon as a cop who ends up partnered with taxi driver Queen Latifah. Yeah, I’d much rather see them than Andy Kaufman, Danny Devito and Christopher Lloyd. Also stars the reasonably attractive Brazilian supermodel Giselle Bundchen. WITHOUT A PADDLE - (PG13) - Comedy - Think Deliverance, but not as funny. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard play three guys who take a canoe into the Oregon wilderness looking for treasure but finding dangerous hunters, hippie chicks, wild rapids and some crazy old coot played by Burt Reynolds who starred in, among other movies, Deliverance. ZATOICHI: THE BLIND SWORDSMAN – R – Action/Adventure/Drama – Japanese flick that follows blind nomad/gambler/masseur/master swordsman Zatoichi has he visits a 19th Century village controlled by merciless gangster Ginzo. Much swordfighting follows involving Ginzo’s henchmen, a samurai ronin named Hattori and two beautiful geishas. Awww yeaaaaaah.

The Afro Celt Sound System is as the name implies—a unique blend of African rhythms and Celtic melodies. They also put out some of the most interesting electronic dance music. On Pod, they have help from outstanding producers like Masters at Work and Mass to come up with remarkable remixes. Afro Celt’s Simon Emmerson and James McNally also provide the live instruments, like guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, keyboards, whistles and piano. “Johnny at Sea” is an exemplary track with African vocals, percussion and woodwinds alongside far-out dub sounds. “Further in Time” is the best dance number, featuring an irresistible hip-shaking beat and mix of African and English chorus. Pod comes with a DVD as well, showing highlights from the WOMAD tour and other videos. —Real World Records 2004 [JOE GATTO]

I have friends who hate music reviews that compare bands with other bands. You know, like “Muse sounds like Radiohead’s poppy little brother or Queen’s hot, younger lover.” So I won’t do that. But I can see how somebody—not me—would want to do that with Muse, what with the melodically foreboding rhythms and the high-octave-range caterwauling, interspersed with aggressive guitar riffs a la Radiohead. And the sweet, simple, piano ballads that erupt in dramatic—grandiose, even—interludes of rock opera anthems, which may spark references to Queen. I’ll admit it, their infectiously catchy but dark, haunting radio hit “Time Is Running Out” sank its hook into me and compelled me to buy this CD. But I’m glad I did ‘cause I really like Radiohead and Queen. So there. —Warner Bros. Records 2003 [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

Issa Bagayogo captures the soul of the music of Mali with superb instrumentation and strong, yet stark vocals. He is a popular African musician, but keeps his roots intact as he masterfully mixes traditional West African rhythms with modern production and electronica. A gorgeous chorus of female vocals contrasts his call-and-response lyrics and offers a sweet quality to the songs. Bagayogo is a master of the n’goni, a Malian lute, which is kind of like a six-string berimbau that makes a fascinating sound. French producer, Yves Wernert, produced the album in Mali and the results are far superior to the majority of Afro-pop normally recorded in Paris. Tassoumakan is a smooth, mellow album with several entrancing tracks and a couple of really funky, upbeat numbers. — Six Degrees Records 2004 [JOE GATTO]

CHRIS WHITLEY “WAR CRIME BLUES” Sometimes music needs to be raw and visceral, without the fancy dance beats or the half-naked teenage pop princesses. Here is Chris Whitley at his minimalist best, where his lucid but weary voice and gut-wrenching National steel-guitar playing carries the entire song. A kick drum, or perhaps his stomping foot, is used to accompany and keep time. Here, the music itself is used as a weapon. War Crime Blues also contains a bonechilling version of The Clash’s “The Call Up,” Lou Reed’s “I Can’t Stand It” and a beautiful a cappella version of “Nature Boy,” a song popularized by David Bowie on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. —Messenger Records 2004 [STEPHEN HART] Got Music? As wild and irreverent as it sounds, the show has a bawdiness that would make the Bard proud. “This is Saturday Night Live Shakespeare,” said Mora, to which the other actors agree. “You don’t need to know Shakespeare to like this show. Equally strong in energy and talent, each of the three take turns playing the ham on stage—and one scene is funnier than the last. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I’m too bored to write you a proper horoscope this week. You’re just too damn normal. Your scales are so in synch that there’s nothing for people to latch onto. Where are the extremes, the flaws, the fascinating neuroses and idiosyncrasies? You know what I’m getting at, don’t you? You and I both know that you’re not perfect, despite the faultless veneer you’ve managed to throw up between the real you and the world. Guess what? It’s intimidating and off-putting rather than interesting and attractive, as you’d hoped. Show off your humanity this week, Libra. It’s your sexiest part.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) This week you’re a gorgon; you can turn people to stone with a glance. Venomous words and actions would be overkill when just a look can be almost lethal. The problem: being so damn powerful is quite daunting to all but the bravest, stupidest, or most foolhardy folk—most of whom are as dumb as dough and not good company. What to do? Tone down your extreme nature? Hell, no. Instead, encourage fascinating folk to approach with this calm assurance: “Yes, I’m poison, but I’m the antidote, too. When you recover from me, you’ll be stronger than you ever were.”

My boyfriend has a thousand comic voices and a brain that stores and recalls funny moments, songs and movie quotes with skillful, appropriate and delightful ease. His bridge between memory and the present moment is a wide avenue along which many vehicles and creatures can pass simultaneously in both directions. Your memory, conversely, lies across a narrow rope bridge. In other words, most people have some idea that an immense kingdom of diverse recollections exists over there, but they’ve only rarely heard specifics. Your story-treasures languish, unspent. Sadly, these are riches that evaporate when you don’t often use them. Being present is good; informing the moment with your vast and fascinating past is better. Expand that rope bridge so it’s wide enough to accommodate a herd of elephants, then march them across.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Good. You’re surprising me, and many of those around you. The new facets of your personality that you’re unveiling are hot stuff. I have to confess that some of us had begun to find you more or less predictable (those more tactful folk would call it “consistent”) over the past year. Now you’re shocking the crap out of us. Don’t worry, we’re pleased, not upset; it’s one of those win-win type scenarios. Why does it feel so absolutely right? Because even though what you’re up to seems totally “out of character,” it also suits you perfectly. Keep it up.

You fanatically avoid competition; this is one of the reasons you’re deeply reluctant to market yourself or venture into any kind of fast-paced or high-stakes business venture. You’re an old soul, and that game has quite simply lost all interest for you. Life for you is about many interesting things, but comparing people or their works and deciding which is “better” just seems lame and unimaginative. However, most of us aren’t that enlightened. Don’t spurn us because we’re not as spiritually experienced as you are, or you’ll be guilty of the kind of comparison/competition game you’re disdaining and be slung back, in short order, to the beginning of the zodiac, for yet another spin around the wheel.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
EMAIL classifieds@mauitime.com
I confess I’m not particularly fond of most of the people who are drawn to serve in the armed forces, or become police officers. While there are those noble few who do it for admirable, idealistic reasons, too many do it because they’re arrogant, hierarchically-minded assholes who like having authority and wielding power over other people—many like it so much that they abuse it. Aries are as susceptible to this trap as any other sign, but those who escape it and opt for power-with rather than power-over scenarios, are put in a sweet position. Many people think they can only choose between being oppressor and oppressed. You clearly have a third choice: Champion for the underdog. Don that mantle this week, if possible.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You know you’ve got a problem when it’s mid-October and you’re already, more or less, doing the deep winter hibernation thing. Resist your hermetic tendencies by forcing yourself to go out at least three times this week, regardless of your actual mood or energy levels. Try to have fun, but even if you’re having a sullen, lousy time, keep yourself from retreating to the solitude of your apartment. If you did that, I predict you’d be pretty much lost to the world, at least until springtime. Since there are important bits planned for you before then, I’d rather you got to experience them. Pick up the phone and get dressed. It’s time to go out.

Money is a screwed up thing. Its acquisition is a game you understand quite early in life and almost always become quite good at; so much so that you often rope yourself into choices that make you wealthy in funds but impoverished in some aspects of human existence that convey true richness apart from the depth of your credit: love in all forms, intimacy, inspired human connection. There’s hope for you, though; being so responsible and ambitious has caused you to cultivate many personal qualities that people find attractive and desirable. What’s left is to apply them in a new direction. Try that this week.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I love the sound of breaking glass. I confess that I sometimes take too little care when washing up after a meal in hopes that a glass might slip and break—I’m almost always pleased, not upset, when that happens. Still, I’m too poor to deliberately go around breaking my stuff, just for the split-second aural thrill. It’s really a bad habit of mine, and of yours—you take too many risks with things you can’t afford to replace. Even though breaking or losing them might feel exciting or good for a moment, the consequences would be far less pleasant. At least for this week, take pains to preserve what you have.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Sorry, I have to kick your ass on occasion; whenever I see you beating yourself up, I try to beat you to the punch, quite literally, as I’ll always do a worse job of it than you would. In other words, when you’re so busy defending yourself from me, you forget all the hell you were going to inflict on your poor tender ego. Consequently, you end up better off than you would have if I’d just left you alone. You’re always much crueler to yourself than anyone could ever be to you. Try to think of it this way; when someone causes you pain (deliberately or accidentally) this week, they’re actually sparing you the misery of the far more effective self-torture you might visit upon yourself, otherwise.
PLACING AN AD IS EASY!
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Screw the spotlight—that’s your attitude this week. You’re sick of the relentless glow of all that attention. Sadly, your best efforts to reflect and deflect it only serves to attract more notice; it’s like wearing a flashy chrome suit. You can’t fly under the radar, especially looking like that. Instead you’ve got to absorb every last photon of the glare, so there’s nothing left to report your whereabouts to onlookers. In other words, when unwanted attention comes your way this week, don’t reject it. Instead, quietly and persistently soak it up. This kind of behavior is mostly boring, and will serve to relieve you of the burden of all that popularity almost instantly.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Take up ballroom dancing, perhaps, or canoeing, or karaoke duets. Anything that requires that you fall into synch with another person would be quite a good exercise for you. You get too rigidly attached to your own way of doing things. Strict adherence to a self-designed schedule, routine or method means you get a lot done but don’t give yourself many openings for something new to enter. I’m not even talking about something that will make you more efficient. Life isn’t always about getting something done in the simplest, quickest way. It can also be about having fun. Make that this week’s prime objective.

Time is the thorn in my side I have this little problem with time management. I never feel like there’s enough of it. I’m sure we all experience this. And I constantly want to do everything and nothing simultaneously. I’m too busy to return phone calls, too busy to clean my room, too busy to notice that stack of bills growing exponentially on my desk. I don’t have time to exercise regularly, or to do my laundry. No, I can’t have lunch with you today—I’m busy. Oh, crap! It’s Christmas again? Another birthday?? But what I’m really doing is filling my time with worrying about what I’m NOT doing. And every week, I vow to change my evil ways. Like last Thursday when I purposefully went to work early to make the most of my day. After an hour coffee-talk session with the girls in the office and a two-hour lunch at noon, followed by a quick half-hour chocolate break, the phone rang. My friends Elan and Ben—of Paia and Makawao, respectively—were on a rare visit to Lahaina and wanted to have a beer with me at Bamboo. Okay, I said. After deciding that we would all head to Paradice Bluz later, the boys realized they needed to buy shirts to wear into the dress-code enforcing club. So we went to the new Tommy Bahama’s down the street. Then we went back to the Sugar Shack and waited for BJ to escort us to Giovanni’s in Ka’anapali, where live-to-eat BJ and I had been dying to engorge ourselves on champagne, pasta, and a tiramisu appetizer. The best thing about being adults is being able to order dessert first. We got into Paradice Bluz to suck up a round of Mind Erasers as Gomega started their eclectic set, breezing through Prince, Steel Pulse, Alicia Keyes, and Violent Femmes covers. When they shifted into A-ha’s “Take On Me,â€? a flock of girls attacked the dance floor, taking our Elan and Ben with them. Skipping the dancing all together, BJ and I set to drinking more champagne and Mind Erasers. Then one of us decided it was a good idea to go see DJ Rainbow spin at Erik’s Seafood. In the parking lot, a friend handed me a Valium. Or maybe it was an aspirin. Someone at the bar bought us more Mind Erasers. Then a chef friend of ours told me how he and his friends don’t read my column and I said that’s cool, but I don’t come up to him in bars and tell him that my friends don’t eat at his restaurant. Chill out, man, I said, I’m here to drink and be happy! Then BJ distracted him by showing off her ass-ets. We all concluded hers were better. We polished off another bottle of champagne and were safely driven home, only to crash in bed with all our clothes on and wake up feeling like something died in our mouths. We skipped the next day of work. On Sunday, Jen and I got dolled up for the Los Lobos show at the MACC. We decided to don our most Lola-esque, Spanish-inspired and dance-worthy strapless dresses, hair up, no earrings, necklaces or other such distracting jewelry. “Skin—it’s the new accessory,â€? we said. Of course, we had to start the evening at Idini’s in Wailuku. There, we relished the good nature and entertaining conversation of the bar’s working class patrons. One guy visiting from Kauai told us of his troubles as a construction worker on the wet isle and how he’s decided to become a plumber instead. “Yeah, rain or shine, everybody gotta shit!â€? said the guy sitting next to him. Then another guy to our right was bragging about his latest pimpmobile—a highly sensitized ’93 Cadillac with monitors and a 32-valve, V-8 engine. Yeah, I don’t know what all that means. “Wow! That’s completely titsed out!â€? said Jen. The Los Lobos show was fun. We danced up front on the side of the stage with an older Spanish woman and another hippie-ish woman crawling on the floor with a flashlight looking for‌ something, we hope. We danced and danced, stomped our feet and snapped our fingers, with skirts ablaze and even held out for the “La Bambaâ€? encore before we hightailed it back to Idini’s. With Jen as the ringleader, the bar erupted in the most bizarre dance and sing-along with very large, manly local men singing Britney Spears’ “Toxicâ€? and Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative.â€? After our encore of ‘70s disco smash hits “You Should Be Dancingâ€? and “Rock the Boat,â€? we said thank you and goodnight. Rock on with your bad self. MTW
