LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR DISLIKES HOOTY SENSATIONALISM Your piece on [Maui Weekly Publisher/Editor in Chief Joe] Sugarman was brilliant. I used to laugh at his bad writing, hooty sensationalism, cheap sexism, self-aggrandizement and shit-eating grin. His fiasco of publishing was that doctored photo of a tattooed/pierced baby. The public was outraged while only Joe knew it was supposed to be a joke (people even called child protective services). It was proof positive that he has the poorest taste imaginable. You nailed him to the cross. You called naked on the Emperor. Ah... there is some justice in the world! I shall read you further in the future. -Charles Rasnak, Kihei The Editor responds: I forgot about his pierced baby caption contest! Good times… But check out this week’s Coconut Wireless on page 6. It would seem that Joe’s days of using Maui Weekly to boost development and push cheap sensationalism aren’t quite over…

WASHING WHAT?! Why must I ask the persons preparing my food to WASH THEIR HANDS after touching money, sneezing, touching their nose, opening their wallet, ringing on the cash register or coughing (Food Cops, Oct. 14)? I went in to one establishment where the pizza makers—who were making YOUR pizza—gave me my to-go order bare-handed. Then they rang me up, took my money, gave me change and went back to making YOUR pizza. I called her over and said, “You might want to wash your hand after touching money.” She was absolutely puzzled. “It’s safe food handling procedure,” I added. “Oh,” she said, then went back to making YOUR pizza. I hope my money didn’t fall onto the floor, where you previously stepped, where your slippahs were in the garden, where your dog likes to visit! It’s happening everywhere, chain sub shops, mom and pop shops, local taco joints. WASH YOUR HANDS or CHANGE YOUR GLOVES!!! -Anonymous, via email

Read your comments about the dismal turnout for the Oct. 13 Public Utilities Commission hearing on The Carlyle Groups’ takeover of our communications (Coconut Wireless, Oct. 21). As an expolitician, I can tell you volumes about “socalled” public hearings... but I won’t. As a freelance journalist, I have been following closely all news regarding the “global oligarchy” of which The Carlyle Group is a major player for. I would like to say to my fellow Hawaiians that they are being bought and sold like slaves of old. With all the talk about Hawaiian sovereignty, it still remains just “TALK!” The talk will become real only when Hawaiians band together to create agricultural selfsufficiency. I am devoted to “TRUE SOVEREIGNTY.” Can we feed ourselves? The oligarchy has and is banking upon our

‘Unlawful Waste’ Just what are Wailuku Ag and HC&S doing with all that water? Anyone standing on the Pohakea Bridge along Honoapi’ilani Highway can see the water flowing. The water’s coming through Pohakea Gulch from a place called Reservoir No. 9, which sits at the western edge of the Sandalwood Golf Course. Weather conditions—rain or drought—don’t seem to matter. The water flows regardless. The apparent reason, according to a complaint filed on Oct. 19 with the State Commission on Water Resource Management, is that water is being dumped by Wailuku Agribusiness Co., Inc. (WACI) and Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar (HC&S). The complaint was filed by the Honolulu-based legal advocates Earthjustice on behalf of local groups Hui o Na Wai ‘Eha and Maui Tomorrow. The complaint asks the Commission to stop “the unlawful waste of water diverted from Waihe’e, Waiehu, Iao and Waikapu streams and their tributaries.” The complaint calls these alleged diversions “ongoing violations of the public trust” and demands the Commission force WACI and HC&S to “leave all water not being put to

None of that was apparently found, but the inspector did manage to discover a few potential violations. There was no food thermometer to monitor temperatures. The hand sink was blocked by a radio, and wasn’t working in any case. And there were no soap or paper towels. But a follow-up inspection on June 10 found all the violations corrected. actual, reasonable and beneficial use in their streams of origin.” According to Earthjustice attorney Kapua Sproat, the complaint “builds” on a petition she filed with the Commission back in June to change state flow standards for the four streams in question. The Commission hasn’t yet acted on that petition, which Sproat said prompted her group to file the much stronger complaint on Oct. 19. “We hope the Water Commission will act on this immediately,” she said. “They haven’t taken any official position, but we’re hoping they will bring immediate relief.” The allegation that Wailuku Ag and Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar are dumping water that could be simply returned to streams Hawaiian tradition calls the “Four Great Waters” has infuriated local activists throughout the Iao and Waihe’e Valleys. Indeed, numerous individuals denounced the alleged dumping at an Oct. 28 Water Resource Commission hearing at the Cameron Center in Kahului, even though the matter wasn’t on that day’s agenda. So many criticized the companies that Commissioner Lawrence H. Miike had to say the commission wouldn’t be acting on the matter that day. According to the complaint, WACI’s own data shows the company using more water today than they did when they dedicated all of their land to sugar and macadamia nuts. Since that time, the early 2oth century, the company has converted huge swaths of its land to residential development. At the height of the sugar era, what we now call Wailuku Agribusiness sucked in 25 million gallons of water each day (mgd) to irrigate its 2,445 acres of sugar cane. But today, WACI reports that it only has 1,080.9 acres of cane, along with a little over a hundred acres of pineapple and 382 acres of macadamia nuts— down from 380 and 1,320 acres, respectively. Yet even with so few acres under cultivation, the Wailuku Ag reports and correspondence that are included in the Earthjustice complaint show it took in 52 mgd from the Na Wai ‘Eha in 2002 and another 65.94 mgd in 2003. Both usage figures are far in excess of the 25 mgd Wailuku Ag took in when it farmed nearly 2,500 acres of sugar cane. In a written statement, HC&S General Manager Stephen Holaday denied either seeing the Earthjustice complaint or wasting water. “At HC&S, we use water efficiently and effectively because it is a scarce resource and we are water-short,” said Holaday’s statement. “Our respect for this important resource is continuously demonstrated.” Wailuku Agribusiness officials also vigorously denied the complaint. “Obviously we take a position that is totally opposite of [the complaint],” Wailuku Agribusiness President and former State

A Good Lecture
Yeah, it’s flowing Senator Avery Chumbley said in an interview. “There is not enough water. Earthjustice is simply misleading the public.” I asked him why Earthjustice would do such a thing. “You’ll have to ask them,” he said. “All of the water we’re diverting we’re using primarily for agriculture. Some goes to the County of Maui water supply. If they consider that wasting water, I’d be surprised.” Nonetheless, the water’s still flowing where it shouldn’t be. And until the state Water Resource Commission acts, that fact won’t change.

If there’s anything your Maui County Department of Liquor Control Adjudication Board really seems to enjoy, it’s giving a licensee a good lecture. Well, that and fining licensees more than even the county prosecutor’s office is recommending, but mostly, it’s the lecture. A choice lecture recently went to Peter Longhi, part owner of Longhi’s, which has restaurants in Lahaina and Wailea. On Oct. 6, he found himself before the Adjudication Board on one count of serving a minor and one of failing to card said minor. But this wasn’t the result of a minor decoy sting operation. According to the LC, a little after 9 p.m. on April 10, 2004, two guys— ages 19 and 35—entered Longhi’s in Wailea. Whoever worked the door that night told them that they could go in as long as the kid just ate. So they went inside and ended up ordering six beers between them. The waitress later said she’d assumed that the kid had been carded at the door. Anyway, they left, then about an a hour and a half later got into a minor automobile accident. The 35-year-old had been driving, but it was clear to the police officers on scene that both had been drinking. When asked, the two guys said they’d been hanging out at Longhi’s earlier. Pleading no contest, Longhi told the Adjudication Board that he was sorry, but the kid had just “slipped through the cracks. “We’re primarily a dinner house,” he told the Board. “We card people all the time. It should have happened and it didn’t… We don’t have people standing and drinking. We do not, in practice, card everyone who walks in the door.” The Board members straightened in their chairs. Longhi seemed surprised. “Are we supposed to?” he asked. “If you serve alcohol,” said Board member Ron McOmber. “Carding everyone who walked in the door would be kinda tough,” Longhi said. “Pretty tough to accomplish.” “The department needs to get with you and make you aware that you’re supposed to card everyone,” Board Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama told Longhi. Then the Board fined $3,000, a $1,000 more than Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge recommended. MTW

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, OCT. 27 Monsanto Hawaii, makers of fine genetically-modified fruits and vegetables island-wide, donated $20,000 in education funds to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC). That’s right—the world’s scariest Frankenfoods manufacturer has a hand in your child’s education. “Thanks to support from Monsanto Hawaii,” said MACC education director Susana Browne in a press release today, “these kids will better understand 7th grade science.” It’s actually amusing reading the MACC release, seeing how the author dances around what Monsanto does: “Monsanto works with farmers to discover new ways to improve agriculture and is a leading provider of agricultural products and solutions worldwide.” But hey, Monsanto gave them 20 Gs! All hail Monsanto! Monsanto uber alles! Ich bin ein Monsanto lover!… For anyone thinking the race for the 11th District Representative seat representing South Maui can’t get any stranger—long story short is that Canadian-born former Maui Weekly reporter Cort Gallup wants to run as a Democrat against Republican incumbent Chris Halford but was ruled ineligible by the County Clerk because all U.S. candidates for office have to be U.S. citizens, which Gallup apparently is not. Anyhoo, The Maui News reported today that Gallup just appealed that ruling with the Maui County Board of Registration, which is, naturally, chaired by Maui County Republican Party chairwoman Kay Ghean. Oh, and for those of you at home keeping track of just how small our lovely island is, Ghean is married to Bill Ghean, who sits on the Maui County Department of Liquor Control Adjudication Board.

meant they were fantastic! “Profitability is finally becoming a reality,” Sugarman suddenly insisted this week. So why did old Joe puss out? “I might have been OK with the sale had the Maui News given me a voice in my former paper,” Sugarman wrote in this week’s issue. “But I wasn’t given that voice… I won’t leave this community without an independent voice.” Awww, how cute—the wittle rich baby is mad because mean old Ogden Newspapers won’t wet him write his wittle cowumn. And how modest he is, proclaiming that he possesses the only “independent voice” on the island. So does this mean Sugarman will never sell his paper to Ogden? Don’t be too sure: Sugarman cryptically ended his column with “The ball is now in the court of the Ogden Newspaper Group.” See why it’s so great that Sugarman’s still in charge? As long as he’s running the show, there’s no chance the Maui Weekly will ever become an actual, credible newspaper.
THE WEEK IN REVIEW
FRIDAY, OCT. 29 The Associated Press is reporting that sport utility vehicle (SUV) registrations in the great state of Hawaii jumped 69 percent from 1997 to 2002. This is, to say the least, astonishingly high, considering that California SUV registrations only rose 39 percent over the same time period. I mean, gas prices didn’t rise that high in that time… oh wait, yeah, they did.
SATURDAY, OCT. 30 Governor Linda Lingle answers a question no one I can recall really asking or even caring about: Will she accept a job in a possible second George W. Bush term? “I’d be flattered of course,” Lingle told the AP. “But I am committed to our state.” Actually, I can think of no better way for her to better the health and welfare of the great State of Hawaii than if she took a job that required her to move to Washington, D.C.
THURSDAY, OCT. 28 Got some good news today. Okay, it wasn’t good—it was the greatest, most bestest news I’ve heard all year. Wealthy developer Joe Sugarman—the man who gave the world the twin wonders of program-length commercials and BluBlocker Sunglasses—is not selling the Maui Weekly! Sure, two weeks ago the Weekly ran five separate stories talking about how Sugarman was sad that he “sold” his paper to West Virginia-based Ogden Newspapers, which already owns all the other Maui papers save yours truly, but hey—that was two weeks ago! Who cares that he wrote “If you count success by how much money [the Weekly] earned, we failed miserably. The Maui Weekly never made a profit.” Did I say things were bad? I

SUNDAY, OCT. 31 Stopped by the Democratic Rally at the Kahului Shopping Center. Thirty seconds after I arrived, the band started playing the old standard “Tiny Bubbles.” Then Mele Carroll, who’s running against Bob Carroll—no relation—for the County Council seat representing East Maui, walked over and introduced herself. Then a guy in a black t-shirt emblazoned with the words “John Kerry: Bringing complete sentences back to the White House,” came over and handed me a miniature American flag. As if on cue, Maui County Democratic Party Chairman James “Kimo” Apana walked on stage wearing the gaudiest American flag-style shirt I’d ever seen and announced that the Green Bay Packers had just beaten the Washington Redskins, which because of

some phenomena not completely understood by political scientists meant that Kerry was going to win the election… I’m beginning to think I’m alone in deriving pleasure from Joe Sugarman’s Maui Weekly. It seems that some people, like Thomas Holzer of Kihei, are annoyed at him and his practice of direct-mailing thousands of issues to people across South Maui. “Please discontinue mailing to me a copy of your Maui Weekly,” Holzer wrote Sugarman, then nicely copied over to me. “It is becoming increasingly irritating to read your pamphlet… I tolerated your product in the past, however, the recent selfserving innuendo around your sale (!?!) and the continuing no subject agenda is enough for me to have to ask you to cease sending me more.”
MONDAY, NOV. 1 The slow-growth advocacy group Maui Tomorrow sent a press release warning of an “infrastructure crisis” for West Maui. Crisis, you say? According to the group’s arithmetic, there are 16,224 resort and residential units planned for 30 new developments in the greater Lahaina area, which could add as many as 45,000 new residents to the West Side. That may not seem like a lot, but the current West Maui population is just 18,000. Anyone think the roads, water supply and sewage system can handle that kind of growth?
TUESDAY, NOV. 2 Vote tallies show Don Couch lost again to Roz Baker in the 5th State Senate District; Ed Case is still our congressman; Gallup and GOP incumbents Brian Blundell and Kika Bukoski lost their House races; Michelle Anderson won the South Maui County Council seat; Hawaii residents don’t care about Due Process and Ohio... In an October decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit voted 8-7, not only to affirm Paul Gregory House’s 1986 rape-murder conviction but also to keep him on Tennessee’s death row, despite subsequent knowledge that the prosecutor’s primary evidence was faulty. The eight judges accepted the conviction, even though the rape evidence was based, nearly archaically, on a match of blood “type” in semen found on the victim. Much more sophisticated DNA testing later showed the semen was not from House but from the victim’s estranged husband. He, it was subsequently learned, allegedly “confessed” the crime to three witnesses—evidence that was too belatedly offered to satisfy the majority judges.

THE DISTRICT OF CALAMITY The Washington Times reported in September that the D.C. procurement office had recently awarded three construction contracts to a company whose principal was awaiting sentencing on a federal fraud conviction. And it gets worse: Three days after that report, the Times found that the last of the three contracts was awarded two days after another D.C. government office had officially revoked the construction company’s corporate charter for failing to make required filings.

The developers expressed disappointment at some early reaction to the project from people who focus on the ethical issue of using human cells but ignore the ethical issue of killing animals for their skin. Listening to Ahmed Ahmed and I live in the same house. In fact, we share the refrigerator. He lives in a tiny room with an Islamic prayer rug, an American flag and a tiny TV that’s constantly turned to The History Channel. Ahmed smokes cigarettes and speaks in excited, enthusiastic tones. He says things like “my friend” and “you must understand” a lot. For many years, he was a commercial fisherman in Alaska. In Maine his right ear was bitten off in a bar brawl. He has a faded tattoo on his left forearm of a rose, with LIBYA written in Arabic. *Same day booking only subject to availability. Kama’aina friends and family! Only one ID requred.

Libya became this obsession for me, trying to tell the world what was going on. Myself and all the opposition people—from all over the world, France, England, Germany, Australia, America—we had this network of communication, newsletters, books, things like this. But we lived in fear, really, because there was retribution, my friend had his three kids poisoned in England, someone gave them poison. His kids were killed! blast. You must understand, for us, Qaddafi was like this mystical revolutionary. So, we supported his coup. The previous regime, under King Edris was too corrupt. Under King Edris, there was dictatorship, you could say. His security forces went in to a high school and killed some students. So, we were angry about this. This was at a time when serious violence was not the norm like it is now. You must understand, they were students and we were students, so we mourned their deaths acutely. Some part of us had died that day. “So, here comes this Qaddafi like some movie hero promising to fix all the problems. In retrospect, we just wanted to get back at the previous regime, this tyrant Edris, who murdered my friends. You could say it was us, the students, the young people, the intellectuals that made Qaddafi work, made his coup work, we set the tone. “Like most Third World dictators, Qaddafi wanted to purge Libya of foreign decadence. Coke and Italian coffee were replaced with powdered down versions. Western music and films were censored. Only the American oil companies were allowed to stay. Qaddafi projected himself as the savior of Libya, the local-boy made good… “In all the town squares, my friend, on the freeways, everywhere really, were these signs, green signs saying, in Arabic, ‘The Day of Judgment is on April 7th.’ No one knew what that meant. We thought, well, we trust Qaddafi, Brother Qaddafi, so, it must be something good. “On this day, April 7th, Brother Qaddafi had 36 people or something like that killed, execution style in the military bar-
was his modus operandi. Anyone who opposed him, I mean, he said this himself, would be eliminated. That’s the word he used. Eliminated. “When I was a child, I loved European and American people. I still do, but more so Americans than Europeans. I was a beach boy, you know, I lived on the Mediterranean. The village I was from lived on fish, on fishing, maritime activities. Europeans would come and, you know, take pictures, and vacation. For them, it was this quaint Libyan village, for us, they were like these heroes. We thought anything they did was great, they all were cute, and their clothes were cool. And they thought the same thing about us. Haha! “You must understand, Libya has been through hell forever. From the time the Ottomans left, to the Italians, to Qaddafi, now the Islamic radicals, Libya has never really had peace. My family has been fighting forever. I am just another one in the tradition. My grandmother and grandfather fought the Italians, drove them from the country. A movie was made about it, Lions of the Desert. Anthony Quinn played Omar Al-Muktar, if you can believe that. “I wrote a book. I wanted to call it From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli. Good name, yeah? Somebody took it for the name of a TV show. You can’t use the same name, right? Like, I can’t name myself Tide, because that is soap. Or Lux. That’s soap too. Then I came up with the name Post-Tripoli. All about my life in Libya, the situation there. But someone stole my fucking bag in Honolulu. All this time, writing, racking my brains for words and some ice addict steals my shit. These people will steal the teeth from your mouth, the heart from your body. I tell you, my friend.” MTW

‘I Have the World in My Shop’ All the Aloha Classic windsurfers shop at Kuau Mart One of the most famous and longest running windsurfing events is back on Maui. Next week more than 50 of the world’s top wave sailors will compete at Ho’okipa Beach Park in the 19th Annual Aloha Classic. Guys like Alex Aguera, Mark Angulo, Rush Randle, Josh Stone, and possibly five-time Aloha winner Robby Naish will be there. One thing these guys all have in common—apart from their passion for windsurfing—is Auntie. Auntie knows them all. She’s met all the top sailors, as well as their wives, girlfriends and ex-wives. Auntie’s real name is Leona Nomura and she owns the Kuau Mart, a small convenience store on Hana Highway in Paia. Since Kuau Mart is the store closest to Ho’okipa, sooner or later all sailors stop there for water, food or beer. Once, the Australian two-time world champion Jason Polakow brought his parents to Kuau Mart and introduced them to Nomura. Later, he made sure to stop by the store on his way to the airport to say good-bye to his “Auntie” before flying to a The Nomuras: Leilani, Leona and Summer contest in Brazil. “Bring me back a trophy,” Nomura says told them they were Swedish meatballs. WORKING
GUY
The story of a Wailuku prostitute
By Barukh Shalev The prostitute is not, as feminists claim, the victim of men but rather their conqueror, an outlaw who controls the sexual channel between nature and culture. -Camille Paglia As the wind blows softly across Wailuku, Mona stands on the corner, raising her arms to better take in the cool breeze. A traffic light blinks, turning the hue on the pavement from hot red to smooth green. It is a pleasant, uncharacteristically cool night and the pavement is still wet from the rain an hour ago. An older model Toyota lolls down the block, slowing is it approaches us. A fat, plain face glares at us hungrily from the window, leering. Mona shifts her stance, instantaneously becoming provocative. Her attempt to blow a bubble from the gum she is chewing fails and she licks her lips instead. But fat face keeps moving. We are on Vineyard Street in Wailuku, the epicenter of that town’s streetwalking industry. Mona is a prostitute. Has been for over a decade, cutting her teeth in the industry on Oahu. But she was raised right here in Wailuku, a real local. The move to Oahu was just temporary and economic. “I was after that fast money,” she tells me. Mona winces when I say the word “prostitution.” She winces more when I say the word “hooker.” “But that’s what you are, correct?” I say. “You’re a prostitute, you turn tricks, all that good stuff.” She waves her hands and crinkles her nose. “I prefer working,” she says. “I am working. Those other names are jus’ so uglay!” Later, when we are sitting in my car, Moan makes a confession. “I’m not like, what you think I am.” What she means is that she is a man dressed like a woman. Mona is of mixed Hawaiian, Chinese and Filipino blood. She has dark skin, long black hair and a masculine, severe face. “Are you gay?” I ask. “Well,” she says. “I certainly never had any girlfriends, that’s for sure! I guess you could say that, well, yes, I am gay, true and true.” Mona says she became aware of this at the tender age of 13.

COVER STORY
“It was hard,” she says, explaining how her family was pretty accepting, but her father took it hard. “He had to get used to it, get used to me…” Mona’s voice trails off in thought. She claims her father eventually became accepting of her lifestyle, but that he passed away several years ago. She has a typically large family, six siblings, and a large ohana of aunties and uncles. Some of them know what she does, but others do not. “They don’t care, just as long as I am safe,” she says. To get ready for “work” she puts on what she calls “ordinary clothes.” For this evening, that means daisy dukes, stiletto heels and a see-thru mesh shirt with a black bra underneath. While still sitting in my car, the thought of getting arrested for soliciting a prostitute suddenly strikes me as hilarious. “Oh, don’t worry, honey,” she says. “Nobody ever gets arrested for prostitution.” She claims she has never, ever, been arrested, nor has any of her friends. Mona tells me she has a pretty steady clientele, all of whom are married men. They’re typically middle class “heterosexual” men from areas like Wailuku Heights and Kahului. She says they often remove their wedding rings just before the transaction begins. She considers it a nice touch. “They are curiousssssssss,” Mona says. She sees about five of these happy hubbies every night, and charges them between $50 and $70 for head. Sex work is dangerous. Because of the nature of the work, prostitutes have a higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. But Mona claims she is safe. “Alwaysssss,” she says. Some of her clientele resist using condoms, but she insists. “No condom, no play,” she chirps. It is also dangerous in other, more direct ways. Prostitutes are often targets of sociopaths, sadists, pugilists and psychotics. They are Out There, in the streets with the creeps at all hours of the night, rubbing
shoulders with thugs, drug dealers, runaways and other desperate humans. Prostitutes get paid for going with strangers to private places and doing intimate things. Inner city prostitutes have a pimp to “protect them,” but Mona says she does not. She is an independent agent and as such, must make instantaneous decisions as to whether or not a situation is “safe.” Miscalculations can prove fatal. “When I was on Oahu,” she tells me, “I was about 18 or 19, [and] there was this one guy who, like, forced himself on me. He picked me up and took me to the pier and raped me in the ass. What could I do, he was bigger than me. I just had to, sit there and take what he had to fuckin’ give!” “That’s heavy, man,” I blurt out. “Fuck yeah!” Mona yells, losing her exaggerated femininity. A few days later, while researching this story, I saw a prostitute get beaten savagely. A newer model sedan, driven by a large man, pulled up on a woman wearing a pink sports bra and spandex pants. The man deftly hopped out of the car, then in one motion grabbed hold of spandex lady, demanded that she “get on the ground,” then proceeded to punch her in the head, violently knocking her to the pavement. He grabbed her legs and awkwardly dragged her, caveman style, demanding that she now get “in the car.” By this time the woman was blasting an awful and frantic scream that could be heard for blocks. Almost on cue, two kids, teenagers really, come hurdling out of the darkness, whooping and hollering like an apache war raid. But they were too late. By the time they arrived, the man had gotten back in his slick car and beat it out of there, leaving the woman a bloody, spandex mess on the ground. Later the two kids proudly informed me that they were from the local crew, the Happy Valley boys, and were yelling for additional backup to help “take care” of the man. This is a very typical scene in the sex work industry. Yet Mona tells me that “the only way to stay alive” was to sell her body to willing married men. It’s what they call a social work explanation. Most intelligent people would argue
otherwise, that a “great way to die” would be to do what she is doing. But the more I talked to Mona and her colleagues, the more I realized that, at least on the surface, the reason they do what they do is because it is a thrilling and exciting way to make fast cash. Money for sex, free drugs, fast life, wild nights… where the wild things are! We may not like to admit it to ourselves, but these things, for many people, are enchanting. Mona is, in her own way, following a tradition that is part of our human heritage. The escort, geisha, harem, concubine and call girl are a logical continuation on the natural fact of sexuality. It has often been said that prostitution is the “world’s oldest profession,” but this is only half true. The clergy easily predates the prostitute, though it doesn’t take much to understand why the former needs the latter to survive.
PHOTO:SEAN M. HOWER
Still, the stigmatism of the prostitute can be selective. To some the “escort” is symbolic of moral decay, while at other times she is a folk hero. The pimp is always celebrated and is often times admired and emulated, especially in popular culture. I was recently at a “Pimp and Hos” party in Kihei. The young and beautiful came dressed in their best “pimp” feather hats and “ho” fishnets. The appeal was in the mimicry and admiration of the pimp and ho. From the safety and sanctity of middle class life, the pimp and his hooker are lovable, almost cute. 50 Cent is a P.I.M.P. We greet each other with the “Wassup, pimp” salutation. The Hughes Brothers win awards for their documentary American Pimp. Snoop Dogg says his new protégé, Don “Magic” Juan is “jus’ a pimp from the old school.” There is a sense of fashion about these pimps and their hos, a kind of delicious potency that people find seductive. A mixture of eroticism and proletariat chic, many men fancy themselves as “pimps” while many women fantasize about the rebellious freedom of the prostitute. Sex workers, it seems, are the consummation of society’s taboo desire. Prostitution has been viewed throughout history in widely contradictory ways. In some societies, prostitutes were feared and hated. In ancient Greece, prostitutes were an essential component of religious rituals. By the time of Renaissance France, prostitutes—then called “courtesans”—were educated, talented and respected members of society often sought out as wives. Since Mesopotamian times, prostitutes have been viewed as both pariah and aristocrat. These immense contradictions are representative of the place the prostitute occupies in society. The emotional intersection of commerce, sex, and sin, blur the line between the sacred and profane and speak to the most eternal and irrepressible aspects of mankind. Which is why the transsexual Mona is able to make a living giving head to happily married men. MTW

I’ve been at the Cool Cat Café since April. I started off hostessing, then started filling in shifts as a server. On my days off, I came in to train behind the bar with [bar manager] Karli. I have three jobs, so scheduling was crazy but I was determined! Now I’ve been bartending here for about two-to-three weeks. I went to culinary school, so I know how to cook, and I’ve served and hostessed. For me, getting behind the bar means getting to know that last part of restaurant service. This bar is a good place to learn, there’s a wide variety of drinks to make. People usually ask for whatever the drink special is that day, or Blue Hawaii’s, Mai Tai’s—all that tropical stuff. I do make a damn good Strawberry Lemonade. Guinness is my drink of choice. I moved to Maui two years ago from New Jersey. A friend of mine had an internship at Roy’s Nicolina and told me they needed cooks. After nine months cooking, I went to the front of the house at Roy’s Kahana as a busser and worked my way to food runner, which is what I do now. They have great food. I also work at Skin Deep Tattoo, booking appointments. I like everything about working at Cool Cat. Since Whale’s Tale closed, it’s nice to see the regulars from there come over here now. It’s a very relaxed, laidback environment, everybody who works here is great and we have the best burgers on Maui. My favorite is the Frisco or the Jailhouse Rock—anything with sautéed onions or mushrooms and you can’t go wrong! The Luna Burger and the fish sandwiches are good, too. MTW

You’ve Got Talent, Baby! Friday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Queen Kaahumanu Center [STAGE] C’mon, I know you’ve got it in you! How many times have you pranced around the living room in your skivvies with a mop on your head, pretending to be Christina Aguilera? Give it go—I know you can do it better than Ashlee Simpson! In an effort to call attention to Maui County’s Public Transit system, Roberts Hawaii is sponsoring this Talent Contest, showcasing your big, huge superstar appeal. You can dance, sing, play an instrument, whatever, just as long as you do not currently make a living as an entertainer. And there’ll be three age categories: 11 and under, 12 to 17, and 18 and over. They’ll be judging on originality (save the lip sync for Ashlee!), ability (hey, if Madonna can do it...), stage presence (work it out, honey!), audience reaction (hana hou!) and costume (get that mop ready!). And there’s prizes—including three Oahu getaways for two with airfare and the works, as well as dining gift certificates, so you can eat phat like the star that you are! For more information, contact the Talent Search Maui hotline at 871-6230, ext. 18. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Thicker Than Thieves Thursday, 10 p.m. at Paradice Bluz; Friday, 10 p.m. at the SandBar [MUSIC] Thankfully, Thicker Than Thieves has plans to stick around for a few rockin’ reggae, ska, punk shows in Hawaii before they head back to San Diego. That is, if we let them go back to San Diego—ha HA! And believe me, once you see these guys live, you’ll be hooked into their high-energy “punk with horns” schtick. Plus, they are known to attract the ladies, bringing with them a solid record of five-to-one (that’s good odds, guys!) bar crowds. Original music that we don’t hear every week AND more dancing girls? What’s to lose?!

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CINEMA Wednesday, November 10 Maria Full of Grace 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater "A remarkable picture, full of suspense and discovery" raved Entertainment Weekly. The breakthrough award winning performance by Catalina Sandino Moreno featured in this edge-of-your-seat Sundance Film Festival winning drama about a bright, gutsy young woman on a life-changing—and life-threatening—odyssey from Colombia to New York, weaves a gripping narrative of risk, determination and survival. The SF Chronicle called Maria Full of Grace "A revelatory independent film...astonishing!" In Spanish with English subtitles. Rated R. 101 min.
New This Week AFTER THE SUNSET – (PG13) - Crime, Romance – Pierce Brosnan plays—what else—a master thief who’s pulled his last score and retired to an island paradise. But wait! There’s still one last jewel he hasn’t yet swiped! But then his FBI agent nemesis shows up to make sure he’s out of the stealing business! It all sounds like your standard heist picture routine, but Salma Hayek’s in it, so that makes it a must-see. ALFIE – (R) – Romantic Comedy – Although this is a remake of the 1960s film, it’s still a timeless concept: A bachelor/playah wants to have his cake and eat it too. Easy-on-the-eyes Jude Law stars as the philosophizing womanizer who begins questioning his carefree lifestyle. Also stars Susan Sarandon, Marisa Tormei and Omar Epps. THE INCREDIBLES – (PG) – Action Comedy, Animation – A family of former superheroes comes out of retirement to don masks and capes and brightly colored tights to fight evil and save lives. Voices by Craig T Nelson, Samuel Jackson, Holly Hunter. See Film Critique. THE POLAR EXPRESS – (G) – Family, Animated – A boy struggles to believe in Santa Claus as all his friends and schoolyard chums make fun of him for being so gullible. Stupid chums. But then a giant steam train pulls up to his house to take him to the North Pole. Oh my God, it’s a ghost train! Run and hide! Oh wait, it’s just the 5:15 in from Baltimore. Late as usual…
Now Showing BIRTH – (R) – Drama – Nicole Kidman plays the young widow Anna who’s all set to start a new life when this cute little boy drops into her life claiming to be her reincarnated dead husband. Sounds pretty heavy. Also stars Lauren Bacall, Danny Huston and Cameron—Wait a sec! Did you say Lauren Bacall? THE Lauren Bacall?! Damn! THE FORGOTTEN – (R) – Horror – There’s all these people, like, flying out of nowhere and they just disappear. But then there’s this one black lady that flew out. And there’s this freaky looking guy but he had a human face. Then suddenly he had an alien face. He screams and all the glass breaks. I screamed, but then I was mad that I screamed because it’s actually a dumb movie.. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – (PG13) – Drama – Think Any Given Sunday, but two days earlier and with high school jocks instead of pros. This sports movie chronicles the highs and lows experienced by the 1988 Permian High Panthers of Odessa, Texas. Critics are supposedly calling it one of the greatest football movies ever, but I don’t see how it will ever top Gus, the 1976 Don Knotts/Tim Conway masterpiece about a Yugoslavian mule that got drafted as a field goal kicker. Stars Billy Bob Thornton as the coach and Derek Luke as some guy. GARDEN STATE - (R) - Comedy, Drama,

Romance - A antidepressent-medicated 20-something guy (Zach Braff) living in L.A. as an actor returns to his New Jersey home for his mother’s funeral. Meeting up with his childhood friends and fears, he confronts the issues that have catapulted him into the land of malaise and ennui. Along the way, he also meets a girl (Natalie Portman) with issues of her own, who helps him to see the world with un-medicated eyes. Basically, it’s a journey of self-discovery but not quite that hokey-sounding. So, okay, this movie was one of the best we’ve seen this year—at the Wailea Film Festival—so just go see it.

THE GRUDGE – (PG13) – Horror – You know how your mama told you never to hold a grudge? Well, this little horror flick sets out to prove that point further as Sarah Michelle Gellar finds herself in a cycle of unresolved fury and a curse born of someone who... dunh duh!... held a grudge I HEART HUCKABEES – (PG13) – Comedy – Dysfunction and existentialism abounds in this all-star cast of misfits, including Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Mark Wahlberg, Isabelle Huppert and Jason Schwarzman. LADDER 49 – (PG13) – Drama – Joaquin Phoenix plays a firefighter trapped in a burning building. The whole movie takes place has he reflects on his life as the rest of his ladder company takes their sweet time rescuing him. Also stars John Travolta as the fire chief. RAY – (PG13) – Musical Drama – The story of Ray Charles, blind from age seven, who famously merged Gospel, jazz and rhythm and blues music, all while fighting drug addiction and Southern segregation, eventually becoming one of the greatest American pianists of the 20th century. Stars Jamie Foxx and Regina King. SAW - (R) - Suspense/Horror - Two men awake to discover themselves locked inside a chamber with a dead man, a gun and a couple of handsaws, in a terrific new game a genius psychopath has concocted to see how far his human pets will go to save their own lives. Hmm... demented killers, B-rate actors and no dumb, busty chicks screaming? This actually might be a bonafide scary movie on our hands! Starring Cary Elwes, Monica Potter, Danny Glover. SHALL WE DANCE? – (PG13) – Drama, Musical This movie reads like an after-hours flick on cable: “An overworked Chicago accountant (Richard Gere), tired of the boring routine that his life has become, sees a beautiful dance teacher (Jennifer Lopez) through a window and decides to get to know her better, and as the joy of dancing enters his life, he discovers that it might just be the secret to saving his troubled marriage...” (Greg’s Previews, Yahoo Movies!) SHARK TALE – (PG) – Animation – An all-star cast voices the story of a little fish (Will Smith) who tells tall tales and gets famous. There’s also a love triangle involving the little fish, a hot fish voiced by Angelina Jolie and a sweet fish voiced by Renee Zelleweger. Other voices by Robert De Niro and Jack Black. SHAUN OF THE DEAD - (R) - Comedy/Horror- Just when this poor 29-year-old schmuck is trying to make it up to his chick for being such a loser, the streets explode with zombies. Isn’t that always the way, guys? Now, instead of saving his relationship, the dude has to save London—at least, that’s what he’ll be telling his girlfriend later when he comes home late drunk, again.
KA’AHUMANU 6
So many women, so little time what? Oh, I guess this is something different, starring Jimmy Fallon as a cop who ends up partnered with taxi driver Queen Latifah. Yeah, I’d much rather see them than Andy Kaufman, Danny Devito and Christopher Lloyd. Also stars the reasonably attractive Brazilian supermodel Giselle Bundchen. TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE – (R) – Action/Adventure, Comedy/Puppet show – This action movie with puppets tells the story of an elite band of anti-terrorist commandoes who attempt to rid the world of evildoers. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone—the makers of South Park, BASEketball and Orgazmo—the film should have plenty of subtle humor and light-hearted fun. Word has it they had to cut a golden shower scene to keep the movie Rated R. Woohoo—great reason to buy the DVD!

SURVIVING CHRISTMAS – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – Ben Affleck plays a rich record company exec who gets dumped by his girlfriend. Moping around and fearful of spending Christmas alone, he decides—for reasons that aren’t entirely clear—to go back to the home he grew up in and spend Christmas with the strangers who live there. Because this is a comedy, they turn out to be nuts. Also stars Christina Applegate and that dude who plays Tony Soprano.

ONLY CRIME “TO THE NINES” It’s been awhile since I heard a record that has the drive and intensity of early hardcore punk. It seems that nowadays, anybody with four chords and a vendetta against their daddy can call themselves punk. However, with To the Nines, Only Crime beat the little poppy punks upside the head with their own guitars. The first song, “R.J.R.,” sounds like a melodic outtake of “My War” era Black Flag. My other favorite is “Tenebrae,” with its Motorhead vs. The Descendents groove. To the Nines features intelligent lyrics and blazing guitars, and sounds like a punk band should, making punk rock like your daddy used to listen to. —Fat Wreck Chords, 2004

NO MEANS NO “THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE” There was a time when punk rock was truly weird; where freaks made music for the outcasts of society. People who had no idea how to play their instruments developed a style of their own, creating very original music. From the Talking Heads to the Gang of Four, angular slashing chords over a funk/stomp were not only acceptable but were a lot of fun to listen to. No Means No picked up the gauntlet thrown down way back in 1983, and The People’s Choice is a compilation of some of their greatest (non) hits. Using biting lyrical sarcasm, a driving bass guitar, and a guitar player who understands the importance of the space between the notes, No Means No entertain, tell a good story, play aggressively and not suck while doing it. Go figure. —Ant Acid Audio, 2004
ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE IMPOSTERS “THE DELIVERY MAN”
>>>>
I was really excited about this album, as I heard it was going to be a country record, and I like Costello when he gets all mad and weepy. The Delivery Man blends a tight southern soul sound with country ballads with all the vitriolic bile that Costello is known for. I am constantly surprised by how strong his singing gets with each album. His duet with Emmylou Harris reminds me of his song “Satellite,” with Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders. Even though I’m disappointed this isn’t a pure country record, it is still a solid Elvis Costello record. For country fans though, Costello has thoughtfully provided us with the “Almost Blue” reissue in the last couple of months, which is worth the sticker price for the twisted version of “Psycho,” so check that out too. —Lost Highway Records, 2004

I don’t know anything about this band but I guess they are from Texas. I heard a song of theirs on a compilation CD and was really surprised by what I heard, so I went and bought this CD. Using electric guitars, bass and drums in a new way is almost unheard of nowadays. If you took the really pretty guitar playing in Radiohead’s OK Computer, threw in a little Sonic Youth textures, along with the instrumental storytelling of the Mermen, you would get Explosions in the Sky. It isn’t surf music, but it sounds like the ocean. An absolutely dynamic record to chill out to, or to wake up and drink coffee while watching the waves roll in, every song builds and builds, then crashes, only to catch you in a soft pillow. Only it’s better than that. —Temporary Residence, 2003 Got Music? If you’d like to share your thoughts on a great or not-so-hot CD you just bought, it’s show and tell time here at Maui Time Weekly! I could hear the roaring cheers of the bar patrons loud and clear as I walked toward the swaying Irish flags of Mulligan’s on the Blue for a Sunday night of Irish music. “This is not only one of my favorite tunes, but one of my favorite concepts,” says Kevin O’Kennedy, tin whistler and vocalist of the Celtic Tigers. “Whiskey before breakfast.” Then he lured the crowd into an upbeat sing along. I had entered Mulligan’s in the mist of the band’s stirring set that mixes the reels and jigs—the dance music of Ireland— with the traditional Irish songs that have been handed down from generation to generation. The Celtic Tigers kept the crowds’ momentum going with a highpowered version of the “Fields of Athen Rye.” A handful of hooligans chanted along from the darkest corner of the bar. The formation of the Celtic Tigers was simple. One day pub owner Michael O’Dwyer told O’Kennedy “You’re the Celtic Tigers now, you’re pluggin’ in and you’re gonna play for these people.” Since the pub opened in 2001, KEVIN O’KENNEDY

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Luckily, you excel at fascinatingly difficult choices like those you face this week. On the one hand, you’ve got some ancient dreams you’ve held onto for years, even decades now. They’re beautiful, spectacular, epic, like something out of a movie. The new dreams being presented to you on the other hand aren’t as dramatic or grand as your old ones, but they do possess one substantial improvement, despite their obvious flaws; they’re actually possible. I can’t tell you which is better—the newer, lesser dream, which is almost immediately achievable, or the older dream, whose splendor is incomparable, but which will probably never fully manifest. Good luck.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) There’s a new bar made entirely out of ice in Milan. If you want to visit it, you have to don special white boots and a polar garment, which serves to protect both you and the crystal clear ice chairs, tables and the bar itself (until it’s ready to be re-sculpted with a new design in six months). I mention this frigid and clever gimmick because it closely resembles your current experience; you’re privy to a fascinating and special new world, but you have to take pains to protect yourself from it, too, lest it take you over or steal the life force that makes you you. Your new environment is not evil, any more than ice is—but it is dangerous. Wear layers—emotional, physical, or spiritual—that can let you enjoy it in safety and pleasure.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) I was poised to type your horoscope when a falling yellow leaf blew in the open window and landed under my fingers on the keyboard, prompting me to rethink exactly how I was going to word this week’s fortune. I’d envisioned something vague and gooey, like, “go with the flow,” but given the intervention of autumn, I’ve rethought that intention. “The flow” is, apparently, more concrete than a feeling at the moment. Watch for specific cues from your environment as to which direction you should head, and how. Fortunately, the signs ought to be as clear and obvious as my yellow leaf; all that’s required is a willingness to heed them.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) This week’s little-known fact about you Rams: you’re the most forgiving sign in the zodiac. Perhaps this is because when you get pissed off, you let it all out in one phenomenally dramatic and heartfelt explosion. Or maybe it’s because you’ve made so many gaffes yourself, and consequently required so much forgiveness. I urge you to advertise this benevolent (even saintly) aspect of your personality, because it’s a well-kept secret. There’s at least one person who believes he’s been written out of your life because of a fuck-up you actually forgave ages ago. Let him know he’s welcome to step carefully back in.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Your back gate echoes with furtive footfalls and keenly-delivered gossip; all the neighbors are running their mouths this week—about you, and about each other. Please stay out of it, despite the deliciously naughty temptation to roll up your sleeves and dive headlong into the muck. Let them hang out with the dirty laundry they’re so fond of, but keep yourself spotless and cheerful—and most of all, worry-free. Who gives a damn what those petty, lifeless rumormongers think or say? You’ve got more important (if less entertaining) business, and you know it. Keep your eyes and ears on that.
A public health message provided by The Maui AIDS Foundation.
Maui Lawn Works
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re only trying to give someone a hand—and the gesture is noted and appreciated—but it’s not doing anyone much good, otherwise. Sometimes you simply have to accept that you’re not in a position to help someone or fix something. You just have to let them suffer, as difficult as that is for you. The plain truth is that anything beyond a kind offer of aid would actually be a hindrance, and only make things worse, or at least more tiring on top of everything else. Keep your own wishes, intentions and desires out of it. Assess your actual ability to help, not your willingness, and act on that.
“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) This week, swear off your worst sexual habit. I’m not talking the filthiest thing you do, nor the laziest, necessarily—although it could be either. I’m referring to that one pattern you indulge in that you know isn’t good for you—or any of those involved. This is not about some bullshit outdated morality. This is about what’s right for you. You’ve used this habit as a bit of a crutch—perhaps for avoiding (or creating the illusion of ) intimacy—but now it’s time to walk on your own two feet. It might make you scared, sore, miserable, lonely or slow—but nevertheless better off.
Jason Meyer 573-1920
Some people hate you. Yep, they despise the hell out of you. This may be hard to accept. For some Leos, it’s one of the most challenging lessons there is. “Why? Why? Why?” goes the refrain, until you finally realize that analyzing the phenomena to death is a really bad idea, and a pointless time-waster. This is just the way things go. Remember the cliché: You can’t please everybody. Keep that in mind this week, as you’re quite likely to encounter some of your most rabid anti-fans spewing phenomenal amounts of venom and spite. Step out of their way—and certainly don’t put up with any shit—but don’t try too hard to win them over. You just can’t.
Maui Recycling Service
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You thought you were Wonder Woman, didn’t you? You’d looped someone in your Golden Lariat of Truth and were thrilled that you were finally going to get some honest answers. Only, the lasso tore, as frail as a bit of spraypainted string, and your interrogatee fled the scene before s/he could be forced to reveal the innermost workings of his or her heart or diabolical mind. Now it occurs to you: you may have overestimated yourself and your ability to slide painlessly and effortlessly beneath the surface of things and people around you. It’s no big deal, though; now you’re just reduced to finding things out the old-fashioned way: asking.

COVER STORY
Your heart is not a dog, whose natural functions can be put on a schedule: “Feed him now, he’ll shit at 9 p.m.” You can feed a canine the same kibble his entire life, and he probably won’t complain, but if you try to keep your emotional center on a rigidly controlled diet, I guarantee it’ll rebel. In fact, that’s more or less what it’s doing now; you’re having trouble recognizing the symptoms because this has never happened before, at least not quite to this degree. What does your heart need? New sources of nurture, exotic variety, excitement, a divergence from routine. It couldn’t be more simple, nor more fun.

You might as well be a snail, moving from place to place on a big wet muscular foot instead of the sneakerclad pair you’ve mostly used up ‘til now. You’ll find that this method lets you squeeze and slide into locations you could never have achieved on your own two feet. Keep it up; thanks to your recent practice, your muscular tongue is getting better and better at lubricating locks and hinges so the list of available destinations is growing exponentially by the day. Resist the urge to revert to more traditional modes of conveyance, like walking or running, because they will limit you this week. Let your clever mouth move you instead.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Some of your pet projects are tragically dying, as helpless as summer insects after fall’s first cold spell, twitching feebly and waiting, bewildered, for the end. There’s nothing you can do to save them—the bugs, or the concepts—only briefly postpone their demises. They’re doomed by time, and so beyond you. Let them go. Maybe even consider swiftly putting them out of their misery if a slow death saddens you. But be careful; a couple will surprise you by surviving; concentrate on their well-being and fruition all winter, and by spring you should have a whole bevy of new larval creations to nurture and tend.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

Horn-y and On Fire! If only bad habits could be broken as easily as hearts! —Christopher Spranger Last week, Jen and I had a rare night of domesticating, bonding and getting back to our roots. We ferociously cleaned the Sugar Shack—we polished floorboards on our hands and knees, we steamcleaned the carpet—hell, we scrubbed the bathtub with a toothbrush. And then we watched Jersey Girl while eating Jen’s famous Sloppy Joes. And so, with a sparkling clean house, belly full of my roommate’s home-cooked meal and our girlie bond firmly intact, I announced I was moving. Then I promptly burst into tears. Must have been those two hours watching Ben Affleck. On Friday, I went to Hapa’s in Kihei to see Oahu bands Go Jimmy Go and Black Square. There I met up with TBB, BJ and the Westside girls—Dani, Michelle, Debra and her long-lost sister. Even Mr. X came out and had a drink with us next door at Henry’s, between sets at Hapa’s. The bands that night were ska-fabulous. The energy was high and with a horn section in each band, I kept hearing people in the crowd say things like, “I love that sax!” or “Dig that trombone!” and “They just don’t use enough horns in music these days!” Yeah, but what about the cowbell? All right, so I’m not entirely over musicians: The lead singer for Go Jimmy Go, Bison, is my new schoolgirl crush. Maddeningly yet innocently, my cute and slightly inebriated Michelle tried to get him to take his shirt off on stage. “Take one for the team!” she yelled. Repeatedly. She even crawled up on stage, grabbed the bass guitar and started wailing like the rock star she is. She was That Girl. On Saturday, Sasha and I went to Wailuku to pick up TBB, BJ and their Big Island friend Ryan. After we popped open and guzzled a bottle of White Star champagne with glee, we went—girls in one car, boys in another—to the SandBar in Paia, where I had decided to resume my groupie status for Go Jimmy Go. They were playing that night, again along with Black Square and new band to Hawaii Thicker Than Thieves. Standing outside, Reeny told me about some Boston boys who had stopped by and were hot on the trail for the elusive “Holoholo Girl.” Flattered, disturbed and adjusting my pigtails, I went inside. My favorite promoter, GJG’s Rick, introduced me to a very lovely Angelique. And saxophonist Eric introduced me to his beauteous girlfriend while bassist Cameron entertained me on cue with joke after joke. He was like my own private court jester. Then, also as if on cue, I flirted shamelessly with Bison. I might even have told him that I would vote for him for president. Did I mention the shameless part of my flirting? Meanwhile, Sasha, BJ and I drank Cosmos and ate edamame. A very friendly patron we’ll call “F” was dry-humping our legs and acting like one of those Roxbury guys on Saturday Night Live, dancing “seductively” with the backs of our chairs and blocking the strategic view of my latest crush. No disrespect to Bison’s girlfriend—if indeed there is one—but damn. No one comes between HG and her unattainable man! Midway through their set, Bison dedicated a song to me. You know what a sucker I am for that. So I rubbed his sweaty, bewildered and smiling cheek all over my face. And then I promised I would never wash it off, just like Marcia in that one Brady Bunch episode with Davy Jones. Sigh. Sasha and I got back to the Sugar Shack in Lahaina a little after 3 a.m. In the kitchen, we started warming a tortilla on the stovetop and I left briefly to remove my dancing shoes. When I came back, the range was on fire and Sasha was calmly attempting to blow out the 12-inch flames. We stood there dumbly for a moment before Jen’s friend, the Drunk Cowboy, rushed in excitedly. “Oh my god! There’s a fire!” he said, as he frantically looked around the kitchen for something to put it out. The small hand towel next to the sink didn’t look quite sufficient so DC improvised. “Oh fuck it,” he said, and with one fell swoop, he tore off his boxers and smothered the flames. With his underwear. As DC stood there naked in the kitchen, modestly trying to cover himself with his hands, Sasha and I were stunned. He really put his ass on the line. On Halloween, I dressed up as a warrior princess and walked up and down Front Street poking under-dressed girls with my sword. MTW
