LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR STILL BELIEVES IN JUSTICE I can’t leave you my name or number but I am a liquor licensee. And I don’t know about you, but what I read about the liquor board bullshit that went on, I sure would like to see you do an in-depth investigation into that because this is absolute bullshit (“Risk to the Community,” Nov. 11). I mean, whoever heard of 20-something strikes being consolidated into one? I mean, you know, a $50,000 fine for the Hyatt [Regency Maui] is peanuts—it’s just crap. This is a political bullshit sham, you know. Justice certainly wasn’t served. -Anonymous, via voicemail

Just calling about your Maui Time Weekly—the story of the Wailuku prostitute (“Working Guy,” Nov. 4, 2004). I just wonder if you guys have anything better to—any other subject matter that’s more important for Maui in general. Just something a little bit, maybe a little bit better class or higher class than that? This goes out to people all over the world that come to this island, and I think it’s kind of tacky. So, maybe we can change whoever’s doing your photography or your stories. Maybe we should send in some good stories to you. Huh? Good idea? I think I’ll do that. Aloha. -Anonymous woman, via voicemail The Editor responds: Change whoever’s in charge of our photography? You mean Rudi? Oh man, he wouldn’t like that. You see, Rudi’s a bit of a, well, I guess you could say loose cannon. Great guy, really— bought me breakfast once—but every now and then he just sorta snaps. Like that time he came into the office and found someone had—Oh, hey Rudi. How’s it going, brother? Have you been hovering behind me with that cleaver for a while? Um, cool. My wallet came out of my pocket while I was at the breakwater stone beach across from Keopuolani Park a few weekends ago. I’m a working musician and had just gotten paid $350 in cash for my last two weeks. I had not gotten to the bank yet. That money was for food and bills. Whoever picked it up took the money and threw away (or hasn’t yet tried to use) the credit cards, license and ATM card. This person is almost certainly an island resident because tourists don’t generally go to that beach. I just want to say thanks for making my life impossible. Haven’t you ever lost anything valuable? My number was on the business card and my PO Box was listed on the license. It would have been simple for you to have sent it all back to me. The money was one thing, but why did you have to screw up my life?

Cruising Along

LC Watch ‘Good Faith Effort’

Will Hawaii ever regain control over its waters? The Maxim Gorkiy is a 25,000-ton ocean liner built in Germany in 1969. Today a Russian ship flying a Bahamian flag, she was originally christened the Hamburg when she sailed for a German cruise firm. Her 788 passengers and 339 crewmembers make for a relatively small ship, considering some vessels carry 3,000-5,000 passengers. On March 20 of this year, she dropped anchor in Lahaina. The day before, while still in port on Oahu, Center for Disease Control (CDC) officials went aboard and conducted a routine, unannounced inspection. According to the CDC, such inspections seek to “achieve a level of sanitation that will minimize the potential for gastrointestinal disease outbreaks on these ships.” The CDC inspection report shows 18 “violations” throughout the ship, including incomplete medical logs in the ship’s dispensary; multiple problems with the potable water system, testing procedures and tanks; improperly stored food; improperly cleaned and maintained cooking utensils and surfaces; poor cookware sanitization procedures in the main and crew galleys and broken ventilation systems in the main galley. Out of a possible 100 inspection points, the Gorkiy scored 87—just enough to attain a “satisfactory” rating from the CDC. Yet even if the ship had received an “unsatisfactory” score—85 or lower—there wasn’t much the CDC could do, it says, beyond demanding a “reinspection within a reasonable time frame depending upon ship schedules and receipt of a ‘Statement of Corrective Action’ from the ship’s management.” Few, if any, government agencies around the world will bring the hammer down on cruise lines. In the main, they operate completely independent of “recommendations,” “voluntary requirements” and “memoranda of understanding” in the incredibly anarchical world known as The Ocean.

Thar she blows In Hawaii, much of the cruise line’s neartotal supremacy over environmental and labor laws stems from the state’s 2002 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU lays out specific sewage and wastewater discharge requirements, certainly, but includes no sanctions. Instead, they “require” something called “voluntary compliance and reporting.” It’s a simple concept, really, sometimes called “the honor system.” Say a cruise ship makes a mistake and dumps plastic in Hawaiian waters—a big problem for our reefs and sea life. It must tell the state that it did so. In a clumsy attempt to prove the MOU works, a “Frequently Asked Questions” sheet handed out by Mayor Alan Arakawa’s Cruise Ship Task Force mentions that “a dozen violations in or around Hawaiian waters were selfreported during the first year of the MOU.” Self-reported. In fact, the state has no idea how many “violations” occurred that weren’t reported. Amazingly enough, even if the ship does dump the plastic and cops to it, nothing really happens. What’s the state going to do— drive the ships from our waters? The problem is only going to get worse. According to the Cruise Ship Task Force, the number of cruise ship passengers in Lahaina waters alone quadrupled in the last six years— 34,000 in 1998, 125,000 projected by the end of this year. The numbers for Kahului Harbor are smaller, but not by much: 52,000 in 1998 compared with 122,000 this year. Soon, the

numbers will be greater than the island population itself. That means actual ship visits to Maui will increase dramatically. In fact, the Task Force projects that 159 ships will stop at Maui this year, but 187 in 2005. The 17-member Task Force, which has met twice in the last two weeks, split dozens of interested residents into roundtable groups, brought all sorts of community representatives and officials together and projected many, many Powerpoint Presentations. They expect to finish their recommendations to Arakawa sometime early next year. But the cold reality is that absolutely nothing will change concerning cruise ships in Hawaiian waters until the state legislature gets rid of that damn MOU. Once done, the state could finally pass some actual requirements that mandate stiff punishments on cruise lines if they dump when they ought not to dump. California and Alaska are already part-way there. Add Hawaii to the mix, and who knows? Maybe the CDC will start forcing ships like the Gorkiy to have clean galleys.

Sometime in the next couple of weeks or months, Aloha Discount Liquor in Kihei will have to close for seven straight days. According to owner Jonathan Krickler, locking the doors will cost him $3,000 a day— $21,000 by the time the week’s up. This—plus a suspended $1,000 fine—is what your Liquor Control Adjudication Board recently ruled Krickler must pay for getting convicted of a third strike for selling alcohol to a minor. Krickler’s store wasn’t even nabbed in one of the LC’s minor decoy stings, but in what Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge called “routine surveillance.” At 10 p.m. on June 4, 2004, two LC investigators— including Gene Silva, son of LC Director Franklyn Silva—were apparently just hanging outside the liquor store, when a “young looking” man named William Joseph Joy Leppert walked in. When Leppert walked out carrying two 12-packs of Aspen Edge, the LC agents approached and asked for his ID. The LC says Leppert then reached into his wallet, pushed a Hawaii state ID out of the way and handed over a Pennsylvania license. The LC investigators, who noticed Leppert shove the Hawaii ID aside, then asked to see that card, which clearly showed he was underage. “A look of despair came over the young male’s face,” Hedge poetically told the Adjudication Board during its Nov. 9 hearing. In his defense, Krickler showed the Board a clip of his video surveillance camera tape that apparently showed his cashier reading over the Pennsylvania ID Leppert handed over, challenging him with questions about his alleged birthday, height, etc. When Leppert successfully answered all the questions, the cashier rang up the sale. Krickler described his cashier’s actions as “a good faith effort.” He said two Maui Police Officers told him that the guy in the Pennsylvania ID Leppert used to buy the Aspen Edge really looked like him. Krickler then explained that his previous convictions have motivated him to really train his employees, ban anyone under 21 from the store after 8 p.m., demand a credit card along with ID from anyone who looks under 30, put a height stick by the register and write a list of people banned from buying booze that’s “longer than my arm.” The LC could have suspended Krickler’s license for 30 days, so I guess all that helped. NEWS

Ho hum, let’s thumb through today’s paper... U.S. troops and Iraqi insurgents are continuing to wage ferocious urban warfare in Falluja, President, Commander-in-Chief and Junior G-Man #63825 George W. Bush announced that White House Counsel Alberto Gonzalez—the legal dude who wrote all those memos a couple years back saying the U.S. could torture people and violate the Geneva Conventions—is his choice to be the new U.S. Attorney General, longtime Palestinian terrorist Yasser Arafat died and Makana the Cranky Monk Seal is squatting on Ho’okipa Beach like he owns the place. As you can see, it’s the end of the world.

THURSDAY, NOV. 11 Got another three emails today alleging Bush stole the Nov. 2 election from John Kerry. “Investigate the vote,” one message demanded before citing in mind-numbing, footnoted detail instances of alleged “voting irregularities.” Another blasted “Bush’s ‘Incredible’ Vote Tallies.” These messages bring the total number of emails of this type I’ve received in the last week and a half to 1,482,367, and, frankly, I’m getting a little bit tired of them. There was the not-very humorous humor piece “How I stole your election by George W. Bush.” “Black Box Voting at Work” came soon after. The list went on: “Kerry to Unconcede [sic] if There is Evidence of Fraud,” “Hacking the Vote,” “PTA Scholarships Available.” People, it’s gotta stop! Look, I know how you feel: How could a dumb hick like Dubya who can’t even talk or consume a pretzel correctly blow away the elegant, wise Senator Kerry? But seriously, you’ve got to give this up. Bush got a second term in office because more or less 60 million Americans think he’s doing a peachy job cutting the taxes and killing the evildoers. Hell, as Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Seymour Hersh pointed out a couple weeks ago, that’s pretty much the same number of citizens who believe God created the Earth in six days and evolution is just an “atheistic” theory… Today being Veteran’s Day and all, it’s only fair that an aide to Senator Daniel Inouye called 34-year-old Kauai resident and Gulf War I vet David M. Miyasato to tell him his orders to return to the U.S. Army long after his obligation was honorably completed were

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

the result of an “internal computer discrepancy.” Too bad the other few thousand guys caught in the Pentagon’s “back door draft” aren’t so fortunate.

FRIDAY, NOV. 12 This afternoon some sort of accident knocked out all the cable TV for Maui’s West Side, filling area living rooms with static and bars with no customers. Residents reacted calmly and simply did other things like going for a swim or riding a bike. This period of calm lasted approximately two minutes. Then riots broke out, plunging the already volatile region into chaos. Panic subsided when someone noticed Jim Kartes’ Paradise Television Network was miraculously still on the air. But riots resumed 15 seconds later when residents remembered that they hated the Paradise Television Network. The unrest lasted well into the evening, when Oceanic Time Warner Cable engineers finally restored service. The West Side briefly rejoiced, then remembered that there’s never anything on Friday night.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

SATURDAY, NOV. 13 The lead story in today’s Maui News is on the eight-percent pay hike Mayor Alan Arakawa and county department heads are getting. For Arakawa, that translates into a new shiny $103,680 salary, which replaces his old, dull $96,000 a year salary. At last, the mayor’s making more than the police chief! As for the department directors, they’ll be making on average an extra five to six Gs each year now. For example, Liquor Control Director Franklyn Silva will now make $83,160 instead of $77,000; Water Director George Tengan will pull in $89,640, up from $83,000; and Managing Director Keith Regan will get an extra $7,200 added to his paltry $90,000 salary. I mean, it’s all fair, right? These guys are doing a good job, right? As long as they’re doing a good job and don’t have any screw-ups, I don’t see any problem with them getting raises… Just gonna take a sec to check my email… “Ballot Tampering in the 21st Century”—I said no more!

SUNDAY, NOV. 14 The Honolulu engineering firm Ernest K. Hirata and Associates got more bad pub in the paper today after the state Campaign Spending Commission voted to approve the $127,500 fine against the company for allegedly making $100,000 in illegal contributions to politicians since 1996. Among those who accepted money from Hirata and Associates was our own current Maui County Democratic Party chairman James “Kimo” Apana. Not that there was anything

OVERHEARD... “OKAY, THIS IS WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO. WE’RE GOING TO MOVE HERE AND GET ONE OF THOSE STARTER HOMES. WE’LL GET A STARTER HOME BY THE BEACH. WE’LL KNOCK OUT A FEW WALLS—IT’LL BE EASY. THEN WE’LL GET DEREK TO COME OUT. THEN I’M IN FOR $25,000, DEREK’S IN FOR $25,000... WE CAN DO THIS.” -Two guys talking outside the Hula Grill, Nov. 1

illegal or unethical about Kimo’s cashing the firm’s check—I’m just saying.

MONDAY, NOV. 15 For the last three years, the county water department “substantially overstated” how much water they were producing, reported today’s Maui News. The story is based on a letter Water Director Tengan—recent beneficiary of a $6,640 a year raise—wrote on Oct. 25 to county council members. Apparently, our obviously underpaid water officials have made some slight math errors when estimating how much water the county has been sucking out of the Iao Aquifer—nothing major, just that the county has been drawing 1.4 million gallons a day more than it actually has. Last year, as you water fans will remember, the state took over control of the Iao because the county was taking water too fast. So what does this sudden revelation mean? Will Maui County regain control over the Iao Aquifer? And what of the Waihee Aquifer nearby that the state’s looking at taking over— are we drawing too much of that? Council member Danny Mateo, told the News he “couldn’t believe” Tengan’s letter. Now was he shocked at such error, or elated at a potential opportunity to really open up land development?

TUESDAY, NOV. 16 According to the Honolulu Advertiser, Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge came over to Hawaii yesterday and said the War on Terrorism is “fought by every nation and every citizen that stands on the side of hope and liberty.” Isn’t it great how he can label brutally repressive nations like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan as standing for “hope and liberty?” Doesn’t it make you proud? MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD THE SURFING RABBI California rabbi Nachum Shifren, 53, cuts a dashing figure on the beach at Malibu, where he is the legendary surfer “Shifty,” easily found on 20-foot waves by his long beard, according to a September profile in the San Diego Union-Tribune. In his spare time—he says he is ready to ride 24/6, allowing for the Sabbath—he has conducted “Passover surfaris” and beach bar mitzvahs. His lectures on Deuteronomy include the observation that “surf punks” paddled out into the Red Sea during the Jews’ exodus from Egypt. “[T]he whole religious experience,” he told the reporter, “the outer body experience, is encompassed in the act of surfing.”

MOVIE ROLL The sheriff in Tucson, Ariz., warned the public in August of a gang of women who lure horny men via newspaper ads into believing that they can buy a starring role in an adult video, citing the recent case of a man who was enticed to send $1,100 to set up a video shoot, then $7,000 more, then $8,000 more, and then another $8,000. He quit only when he learned that the women had persuaded his parents to pay $20,000 more for their son’s “acting” career.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Police in Edwardsville, Ill., charged David Wroten, 20, with fraud in September after, they say, he took out membership in an online dating service by paying with a check drawn on the county jail, where he had been held earlier this year for theft. Wroten, like all inmates, had been issued a check for the

cash he had on him when he was booked, and he allegedly copied the check form. Police were sure Wroten was their man because, naturally, he had posted a photograph of himself on the dating service site.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE North Carolina State Sen. Sam Ellis’ bill to change a section of state law that actually gives an enormous right to rapists failed in committee this year, with the result that some rapists may inevitably go free. If a rape victim chooses to carry her baby, and then place it for adoption, state law requires that both parents agree to the adoption in writing, with no exception for babies conceived by rape. Thus, rapists might withhold their consent, thwarting the mother’s wishes, unless she agrees not to press charges for the rape. According to a September Raleigh News and Observer story, at least three women have recently been in that situation.

CREME DE LA WEIRD David Roy Truscott, 35, pleaded guilty in Cornwall, England, in September to three arsons and a burglary of a farmhouse near Redruth, but the burglary was less significant than what he did when he got onto the property. Police said Truscott had submerged himself in a manure pit in order to masturbate. (Also, containers of liquid sludge were found at his home.) At the crime scene, two items of Truscott’s were picked up, but of questionable usefulness given the severity of his alleged behavior: Tissues and rubber gloves.

The Hatmaker But you’d probably call him a tramp But it goes a little deeper than that He’s a highway chile -Jimi Hendrix

*Same day booking only subject to availability. Kama’aina friends and family! Only one ID requred.

I’d seen the Hatmaker four times a week in Lahaina, sitting on the seawall, making his hats, but I ended up meeting him on Ma’alaea Road. He was walking casually alongside the heavy traffic, as he often is, strumming his guitar, wearing a handmade palm leafed hat. That’s his job— making hats. “I learned from Loose Bruce,” he told me. “I asked him if he could teach me how to weave and he said to me, ‘Climb that tree,’ then we’ll talk about teaching you how to weave. Well, I did so, and he taught me how. Loose Bruce was dying.” How? I asked. “Ah, hell, he was in Vietnam—Agent Orange and all that,” the Hatmaker said.

NEWS

May 22, 2004

Time Noon The complainant was dining at Denny’s with her daughter when she found approximately 15 black bugs in her daughter’s cup of root beer. She reported the incident to management, who offered a free drink replacement but no apology. On May 25, 2004, a sanitarian from the Sanitation Branch informed “the person in charge” at Denny’s that a complaint had been filed. She said she wasn’t aware of any complaint. The general manager did know about the complaint, but said there were “only” three ants found in the root beer, which probably came from the soda nozzle. The nozzle was cleaned and there was no evidence of ants. The ice bin beneath the soda dispenser was inspected. Some coffee grains were found on the ice, but no ants. A waitress was instructed to clean out the bin and the complaint was abated. -Lauren Dahl

“Plus he was a junkie. He taught me to weave as he was dying. He wanted me to carry on the tradition.” The hats are the same ones you see all over Hawaii. They’re wide-brimmed Panama hats made of palm leaf. “God blessed me with the ability to weave,” he said. “I don’t take no handouts. My mama taught me a man has to work, so that’s what I do. I never been to no Salvation Army or no welfare office.” He said the last sentence with disgust. “We are blessed here with a wonderful place where a man can make his own lunch, make his own house, make his own clothes,” he continued. “I might be a little unkempt, but I work for my money, just like a man should. “I make my own living, makin’ these here hats,” he said, pointing to his head. “And I do jus’ fine. I know people who have worked two full time jobs, 80 hours a week and never been to the beach. It is so dehumanizing, to live that kinda life.” As we talked, the Hatmaker took off his hat to talk to me, as if we were indoors. He said he was from the Midwest—Illinois, to be exact— and has that small town, ultrapolite demeanor. Standing in front of me with his guitar, he looked a little like Jimmy Rodgers or Hank Williams. He has a remarkably smooth, quiet voice. Despite having been here for more than 20 years, he still speaks with an easygoing Midwestern accent. He is soft spoken and I had to strain to hear him. “I don’t wanna push any religion,” he drawled. “I am here to spread the aloha. If I growl at everyone, everyone will growl back. God loves us, we just hate each other.” Why aren’t you in Lahaina? “Ah, I need a break from Lahaina,” he said. “Sometimes a man has jus’ gotta get away. I am gonna try to spend a week here, on the cliffs of Ma’alaea. I’m fixin’ to fast, pray, cleanse and purify. I stay right above the tunnel. That’s like my sanctuary, or monestary, if you will.” His guitar had a square cut out of it, allowing him to store some of his belongings inside: Water, tissues, an issue of the Maui Bulletin and sheet music for the Jimi Hendrix song, “Highway Chile.” “If you’re gonna learn the guitar, you might as well learn from the best,” he said. Then the Hatmaker told me that he’d been in the paper before. In fact, he still carried a copy, which he showed me. It was a faded travel section of the Calgary Herald. The headline was “Tranquil Maui” and it included an idyllic photo of the Hatmaker and a faceless man playing chess. They were captured in a moment of silent struggle, contemplating their next chess move. “I didn’t even know I was in the paper,” he said. “Oh yeah, my name is David Lewis and I have no address.” MTW

Justice For None Can’t we all just stop torturing people? To: U.S. Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye From: Anthony Pignataro

PHOTO:DAN HERRICK-KPA/KEYSTONE PICTURES

Re: Alberto Gonzalez—President Bush’s nominee for Attorney General Guys, I don’t know about you, but two weeks ago I did more than a little celebrating when U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft announced his resignation. “Why now?” I asked. “Why not four years ago?” That euphoria lasted, oh, about a day. Then I saw our fearless leader, George W. Bush, nominate White House Counsel Alberto Gonzalez to take Ashcroft’s place. Now that’s just super. Ashcroft did a lot of stupid things as AG—cover the naked breast of that lady justice statue thing in the Justice building, instruct federal agencies to forget about the Freedom of Information Act, go wild over alleged “dirty bomb” conspiracies that may or may not have been figments of his paranoid imagination—but as far as I know, he never told federal agents that it was okay by him if they brutalized suspects and inmates. No, that distinction lies with Gonzalez, which is why I’m writing you this open letter. Please, please, PLEASE—do whatever you can to make sure Gonzalez doesn’t become the nation’s next Attorney General. I know neither of you sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee that will eventually hold a hearing on Gonzalez, but you Senate Democrats have done a bangup job so far bottling up some of Bush’s more loony judicial nominees. All I’m saying is add Gonzalez’ name to the list. Yes, Gonzalez would be the first Hispanic in charge of the Justice Department in our nation’s history. But he’d also be the first to say—at least in

public—that the U.S. didn’t have to follow international war crimes laws and could, in fact, torture prisoners as it saw fit. As you know, a couple years ago he headed up the writing of two 50-page legal memos. They declared the Geneva Conventions—which outlawed torture, among other practices we used to think were “war crimes”—to be “obsolete” and “quaint.” And the memos declared that the U.S. didn’t have to follow them anymore. The implication was that we could do what we liked to whom we liked, simply because we had the power to do so. Far more damaging—and dangerous to U.S. forces overseas—Gonzalez’ memos rubber-stamped the torturing of prisoners. Of course, they didn’t use the word “torture”— that’s so, well, fascist—choosing instead to refer to the Orwellian “coercive interrogation.” As writer and former U.S. Army officer Philip Carter has pointed out in the Washington Monthly and Slate, Gonzalez’ legal dissembling had the effect of “essentially defining [torture] out of existence.” “A defendant is guilty of torture only if he acts with the express purpose of inflicting severe pain or suffering on a person within his custody or physical control,” was how Gonzalez rationalized this view to President Bush. In other words, unless U.S. soldiers had the intent of physically harming a prisoner during interrogation, there was no possibility of the soldier being guilty of torture, even if the prisoner ended up badly injured or dead during the questioning. “It was an accident, sir,” was all the interrogator had to say. Because of Bush’s long relationship to Gonzalez—as counsel to Texas Governor Bush, Gonzalez used to write all the memos on impending executions—the president didn’t think twice before adopting his counsel’s rhetoric and thoughts. Such as Gonzalez’ recommendation that the U.S. hold any Al Qaida or Taliban prisoners we caught in Afghanistan way over in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Never thought I’d miss John Ashcroft His thinking was that the prisoners would be out of reach of U.S. courts, making it virtually impossible for them to allege human rights violations. He was wrong, as the Supreme Court recently ruled in Rasul v. Bush. With such thinking at the highest levels of U.S policy-making, was it any real surprise that American guards at Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq went so wild with their prisoners? In fact, Army investigators are currently looking into allegations that some prisoners were

beaten to death. Junking international law? Repeatedly submerging prisoners in water to extract information? Beating prisoners to death? Does this sound like America to you guys? It sure doesn’t to me. So what do you say? Are you with me? It only takes one of you to filibuster. Or are you and the rest of the Democrats going to roll over while Bush promotes people who promote policies that less than a generation ago we all would have denounced as fascism? MTW

Hidden Treasures Visiting Maui’s general store past They’ve got a baseball hat A paniolo hat Sunburn creams And the latest magazines Muu muus, mangos and ukuleles, too And even hamburger for a malahini like you So goes Paul Weston’s “Hasegawa General Store.” The song has since been immortalized in countless localized versions, making Hasegawa’s perhaps the best-known general store on Maui. That’s not a bad accomplishment, considering the island is dotted with old, quaint general stores. Because of its Hana location, Hasegawa’s gets a lot of visitors. Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears have been seen there, as have other movie stars, comedians and politicians. “My great grandfathers Shoichi and Saburo started this store, back in 1910,” Neil Hasagawa, the current owner and caretaker, told me. “Exactly where the Hasagawa Gas Station is now. But we have only been in this location, which used to be the old Hana Theatre, for about 14 years or so. See, back in 1990, the store caught fire. What a disaster, we had almost lost everything. We kept our entire staff, with benefits and used the labor to open this place here. We are a lot like a family here. “We do a little bit of everything. We are the UPS distributor, the packages come, we pick them up and call around. We can cash checks, so we’re kind of like the only bank and we have the only ATM so, if you have an out-of-town bank, you can access funds.” Neil Hasegawa has one son, two-year old Braydon. Will he be the fourth generation Hasegawa to run the store? “I don’t know,” shrugged Neil. “You have to let people, you know, make their own decision. I mean, it would be nice… Maybe he would take it over. He already knows the ice cream section.”

On the other side of Haleakala, Florence Ching has worked at Chings in Kula since the Eisenhower Administration. “My husband Harley’s—H-A-R-L-E-Y, make sure you spell it right, dear—parents opened this store in the late 1930s,” she said. “I started working here, gosh, in the early 1950s… 1953, I think. Yes, 1953. Write that down, dear.” Chings is a tiny box-like store with high ceilings and giant opening, not really a door, but rather a large section cut out of the wall. “I think it was designed to be a garage,” Ching said, looking around. “When Harley retired, he was the maintenance supervisor at Kula hospital, you see. We bought the store. That was back in the ‘80s I believe.” Mrs. Ching has a television set, on which she usually watches soap operas and Oprah. “But today I am watching the playoffs,” she said. “I love baseball.” Her son works at Longs drugs and lives in the area, but the future is uncertain for Chings. “Big stores coming. Can’t compete,” she nearly sang. Then she grew serious. “The future is uncertain.” Once the center of local commerce, Mom and Pop stores now have to be creative or face extinction. Once I visited the Morihara Store in Kula. A big group of Adopt-A-Highway volunteers had taken over. “We want hot dogs,” they said. “We want root beer.” “You see this,” said owner Hans Lopes. “This happens all the time, you know. We are famous for these hot dogs.” I watched as the volunteers scarfed down the dogs, then headed off, looking like a chain gang of youthful felons in orange shirts. “Our store is a family-owned store,” said Lopes. “You know what that means? Taking care of our customers. Look, we can’t compete with the big guys—I mean, that’s obvious. So we do it in different ways. It takes creativity to be successful these days. You have to have creativity to roll with the punches. The loyalty from the community is essential and we do pretty much everything we can to do them right.

Mmmm... Candy “Like I told you, we continually try to come up with innovative ways to serve our community,” he continued. “Look, we are a small country store and historically, small county stores were more than stores, they were pillars of the community, so to speak. We try to keep that spirit by networking with local artists, have them display their work here so they can succeed, too. We always knew we had to be more than a grocery store if we are going to succeed. We try as best we can to keep that old country look, but innovate with new technology. “Losing this [place] would be heartbreaking. People who are now parents, grandparents, are bringing their kids here. We are a part of them and they are a part of us. The Mom and Pop store is our history, but it doesn’t have to be our past. I believe that we can smoothly ride into the future without losing our old time values. “We are not here to make money, I mean, we want to make money, but that’s not our bottom line. It’s a heartfelt business, we entice with memory, memory of old time Hawaii. People want to be treated with respect, when they go to the big guys,

Linda Doman and Wendy

they are caught up in the growth of it all, they, in some way, stop being a person and just become a customer. Well, for us we want to keep some tradition here, because we are losing our traditions. We don’t want to make a quick buck. We want to do the right thing.” In the 1920s, Nick Soon was the renaissance man of southeast Maui. A portrait photographer, he came from one of the original entrepreneurial families of Maui. He and his brothers owned a small empire of general stores stretching from Kaupo to Ke’anae. The Soons sold everything—hats, pants, radios, ice cream, staples, kerosene. He built a Model T ford and taught himself how to drive. He was the postmaster, delivering mail on horseback. Soon read literature and taught himself English by candlelight. He fixed clocks and radios and built his own home, which still stands, just where it’s always been, behind the Kaupo Store. Many decades later, Linda Doman met her husband Manny in Waikiki, in her “young and crazy days.” In 1976, after a whirlwind romance, the couple ventured to Maui and immediately fell in love with the rugged isolation of Kaupo. She and her husband hiked the valley trails and swam in the crowd-less ocean. By 1980, they were fully moved in. “We met Alfred Soon, Nick Soon’s son, who at the time was operating the Kaupo Store and there was an instant connection,” she told me during one recent visit. “It was very powerful and special.” Over the years, Linda Doman and Alfred Soon nurtured this platonic relationship on the porch of the Kaupo store. There, they would talk late into the night. In Alfred Soon she found a loyal friend—in her he found the companionship he had been lacking in such a remote outpost. “I began kind of working here and there, odd hours in the early ‘80s,” she recalled. “As time went on, I started taking on more and more hours. In 1984, I pretty much took over the store. I raised my children here, taught them how to read right here on this porch.” I followed her inside the store. “This room, here, this is where they slept when they were babies,” she said. “I had a crib here and…” her voice trailed off. I looked over the photos that covered the walls. One showed her daughter Leanani as a toddler. In the photo there was a bumper sticker on the wall: “Keep Hana Hawaiiian: No Golf Course.” Decades later, that bumper sticker is now gone, replaced with one warning “Kahului Runaway: It’s Long Enough!” “When I took this place over, there were all these boxes stacked up to the ceiling!” she said. “It looked like Napa Auto

Parts in here. Nick Soon used to do all this stuff. He was like this… genius guy, you know what I mean? He fixed old watches, television sets, radios, you name it. He was really special.” Off to the side, there was a series of boxes stacked haphazardly atop one another:

Store expenses: 1946-1948 Charge Slips: 9/1/1925-8/1/1928. ‘Yeah,” Linda said, noticing me noticing the old boxes. “Those would be valuable to, I don’t know, a genealogist or something, historian. Those slips have peoples names on them, if there is,

you know, some question about lineage. If someone lived here at a certain time, those are a good guide. “Kaupo was once a thriving community,” she continued. “Today it has maybe 25 full-time residents. The Hawaiian village system has changed. People don’t want the hardship of living way out here anymore, no jobs… People get a taste of city life and it’s hard to go back. A lot of this community went to fight in World War II and ended up getting married to people from the mainland. After the roads were built, everyone kind of just faded away, at least the younger generation—got jobs, mates in the city. “Leanani!” Linda suddenly shouted to her daughter. “What would you do if your boyfriend lived way out in Lahaina or Kula? “I guess,” she turned back to me, “it depends on where your priorities lie. We like our lifestyle here, but there are sacrifices. We have to generate all our own electricity. People won’t deliver to us. The beer guy just started coming to deliver beer to our store. We have to go all the way out to Wailuku to get ice cream and rush it out here before it melts.” Sitting in front of the Kaupo store, in between the throngs of tour vans, feels like sitting in a small colonial outpost, with creaky wood, cats, dogs and Leanani staring at me through the screen door. I looked over the shelves on the walls—old issues of National Geographic, antique telephones, bottles, boxes of shoe polish, magnificent ancient cameras, transistor radios, antique phonographs. “All this stuff was stuff that was sold here,” said Linda. “It’s not for sale, there isn’t anything anyone could offer me to give up this stuff.” In 1994, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center held an exhibit called This Living Water. It was to be a historical presentation of Hawaiian culture. Before the scheduled concert, the featured slack key guitarists wanted to take a tour of the island. When they stopped in Kaupo, they insisted on a jam session on the bench of the Kaupo porch. “They grew up hearing about this porch,” Linda told me. “It was this legend, all the old timers, back in the ‘30s and ‘40s used to play on this porch late into the night. The artists wanted to use the bench in the concert. “This bench,” Linda said, patting the wood, “is historical!” I ask her about the future. “Just keep on keeping on, trying to be more than just a general store,” she said. “I want to make people aware of the historical importance of our store, maybe make a little exhibit, with Nick Soon’s photos of old time Maui. My son Mano and his partner Wendy are planning to open a Café next door. Maybe Kaupo needs an internet café…” MTW

I’ve been on Maui 33 years now. A lot of my friends were here and they kept telling me to come over from Southern California. But I had three young kids and to make that kind of move is scary. It took me a year to get it together and do it. The first year I was here, everyday I said, “I wanna go home.” But after that year I woke up in the morning and realized I was home. Since I started working at Charley’s 23 years ago, it’s become really well-known. People come from all over the United States saying, “My friend told me about Charley’s. I have to eat here.” We’ve gotten bigger—it’s way more consistent, busier. Paia has changed along with it. There were two restaurants when I started here, Charley’s being one and the Easy Café being the other. Now there’s at least 12 and there’s talk of putting in a McDonald’s—which everyone is totally against it. I think it’s terrible. Maui is growing fast and has gotten so expensive. It’s over-the-top and for the people who’ve lived here a long time, it’s astounding. I just went to Bali. It gives you a sense of being. The people in Bali are so open-hearted and so loving and friendly. It takes you to that place in your mind and your heart and you come back and you want to be like that and you want to give that energy off and just be open and kind. It’s changed the way I do my job. I always recommend Buttermilk Mac-Nut Pancakes and Cajun Ono Benedict because I like them myself. What I don’t like in restaurants are cell phones—when you try and talk to people and take their order and they’re ignoring you. It drives me up the wall. I’ve worked in many places before Charley’s. Too many to name or even think about. What made me stay at Charley’s was the camaraderie. We’ve got each other’s back. Everybody seems like family. We’re tight, we’re close and it’s just a good feeling. MTW

Maui Music Fest Friday, 5:30 at the A&B Amphitheater, MACC [MUSIC] Everybody loves Willie Nelson. He’s probably why this annual benefit concert has become so popular. Every year, Willie and his band the Planetary Bandits headline the event, which this year also features Rickie Lee Jones, Rob Wasserman, Jay Collins, Pat Simmons, Amy Hanaialii and Eric Gilliom, Marty Dread, Noise Boys with Vince Esquire, Gail Swanson and more. We love Willie—not just for his 30 years of award-winning, country/blues/folk/rock music, but because he is an American legend with a heart of gold. A simple man, who jokingly refers to school as the place where he “majored in dominoes.” Plus, he’s gonna play Uncle Jesse in that new Dukes of Hazzard movie coming out next year so you know, that’s cool... The 4th Annual Maui Music Fest is a benefit concert for the Montessori school of Maui tuition assistance program. Gates open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $50, $40 and half-price for kids. Call the box office at 242-7469. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Barefoot in the Park

Khrinj, Anesthesia Friday, 10 p.m. at the SandBar [MUSIC] Have you seen that new reality show on MTV with those heavy metal kids being tortured by the Osbournes, as they compete for their chance to play in OzzFest? The show is kinda cool ‘cause it brings back that crazy, “I’ll do whatever it takes” music industry ambition amidst the “I’ll do whatever” tour debauchery that was such a cornerstone of rock ‘n roll, albeit in this disturbingly accessible trend of reality TV, but whatever. Anyway, I think any one of the guys from these two Maui metal bands could kick the crap out of all of the contestants on that show. And they play some damn good music, too. Silly MTV—they just don’t know.

Friday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 5 p.m. at Iao Theater

Harvest Festival

[STAGE] Maui OnStage kicks off their season with this play by Neil Simon about a newlywed couple experiencing the joys of post-honeymoon reality. Tickets are $18; call the MOS box office at 2426969.

Saturday, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Kula Elementary School [FUNDRAISER] The 17th Annual Harvest Festival is not only a chance for you to stock up on fresh produce and flowers for Thanksgiving, enjoy live entertainment, games, a silent auction and fun for the entire family but it’s also a benefit for educational art, drama, creative movement and other programs for Kula students. Admission is free. Open to the public. For information, call 876-7610.

Aloha Keiki Festival Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Kamali’i Elementary School, Kihei [FUNDRAISER] Because schools just don’t get the funding they need for our keiki, the good people at Kamali’i are putting together this benefit with live music by Willie K and friends, food from Roy’s, Sansei, Outback Steakhouse and other restaurants, as well as pony rides, bouncy castles, rock climbing, a silent auction and lots more stuff. The event is free, with all money going towards student programs and equipment. Call 357-9464 for info or directions.

Maui Invitational The games begin Monday, 9:30 a.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center [SPORTS] College basketball’s about to begin, and that means it’s time for the 21st Annual EA Sports Maui Invitational. You know, college basketball—just as big as the NBA advertising-wise, but more honest, because the players don’t get spoiled with those outrageous salaries. In fact, they don’t get any salaries! Anyway, Day One has BYU playing Number Four-ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina; Stanford going after the Tennessee Volunteers; Number 14-ranked Louisville— coached by Rick Pitino—taking on the Iowa Hawkeyes; and Hawaii’s own Chaminade University playing Number 16ranked Texas. For ticket info, go to the Lahaina Civic Center box office or call 667-3865. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater [MUSIC] Forget the Grammys and the accolades. Forget the collaborations with big names like Lyle Lovett, Diana Krall, Dionne Warwick, the Cranberries, the Beatles and Peter Gabriel. Forget the 2001 “Sexiest Man Alive” title in People magazine. You know you’re a cult icon in the music biz when American Idol devotes an entire portion of the competition to singing nothing but your songs! Burt Bacharach is the legendary composer behind such pop hits as, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” “Close to You” and “What’s New, Pussycat?” combining elements of jazz, Brazilian music, torch songs and rock for over six decades! Tickets are $75, $65, $55 and $35. Call 242-7469.

that bring out the essential themes of Finding Neverland. The first occurs during the backyard performance of a play that Sylvia’s boys have written, when their mother succumbs to a violent coughing attack that brings everything to a halt. In protestation against his mother’s escalating illness Peter (Highmore) throws a temper tantrum and the child actor makes an indelible dramatic mark with a range of emotion that epitomizes the fear and confusion we all confront with the fact of death. The scene will take your breath away for its shear emotional depth and complexity. The other two closely related scenes both involve the premiere stage performances of Peter Pan. On opening night Barrie obscurely insists that his producer leave 25 empty seats scattered throughout the theater for undisclosed patrons who will unmistakably fill them. When 25 children from a nearby orphanage file neatly into their places and the play begins, the present adult audience is given a contagious context for Barrie’s themes of irrepressible youth and lightness of spirit. That same soulful adventure is given even greater meaning when Barrie brings the actors into Sylvia’s home to perform Peter Pan in her living room since her illness prevented her from attending the premiere. Finding Neverland doesn’t pretend to report the historical facts surrounding J.M Barrie and the Davies family, but rather to distill the personal concerns and social conditions that he drew on to construct a classic piece of inspirational fantasy. Relationships can charm people to all kinds of creative heights if they are willing to accept the responsibility. It’s difficult not to rise to the occasion while watching Finding Neverland. MTW

What The Bleep Do We Know? 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater Generating enough buzz to equal the roar of 1,000 beehives at its recent Maui Film Festival screenings, this sympathetic exploration of mysticism and the quantum physics that underlies the seeming reality of everyday life returns for another encore. If the words of the poet Rumi, healer Deepak Chopra or physicist Fritjof Capra resonate for you, this one-of-a-kind modern Alice-inWonderland-like story starring Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin is just your "tea cup" (pun intended). Unrated. 108 min.

New This Week BRIDGET JONES: EDGE OF REASON – (R) – Romantic Comedy – A continuation in following the neurotic trials and insecure tribulations of kinda plump and totally British Bridget (Renée Zellweger) as she thinks and talks to death her perfect relationship with stable Mark (Colin Firth) and her questionable, ego-conqest relationship with former smarmy boss, Daniel (Hugh Grant, who else?). FINDING NEVERLAND – (PG) – Drama – Two words: Johnny Depp. ‘Nuff said. What, you need more? All right, fine. This is the story of J.M. Barrie (author of Peter Pan, 1904 London) and his creative journey to writing the classic children’s tale, inspired in part by his friendships with a young dying mother and her fatherless children. Also stars Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman but who cares? Johnny Depp, okay?! See Film Critique. NATIONAL TREASURE – (PG) – Action/Adventure – Nicholas Cage and Diane Kruger star in this quest to find some incredible treasure hidden by our nation’s founding fathers, who were nice enough to plant clues on the back of $1 bills. Sean Bean, as usual, plays a “ruthless adversary” in their search to unlock the secret to what the movie calls a 2,000-year-old mystery. Sounds great—wait, 2,000? Um, isn’t the country just—wait, let me get my calculator—228 years old? So it’s a 228-year-old mystery, right? Well, that doesn’t sound like such a big deal. THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE – (PG) – Family/Animation – The inevitable movie version of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon of the same name, this ostensible kids’ movie about a talking sponge and his starfish buddy who work in a hamburger joint has a surprising amount of thinly-veiled homoerotic humor. They call their world Bikini Bottom, people! Do I have to spell it out for you? Also stars David Hasselhoff as himself.

Now Showing AFTER THE SUNSET – (PG13) - Crime, Romance – Pierce Brosnan plays—what else—a master thief who’s pulled his last score and retired to an island paradise. But wait! There’s still one last jewel he hasn’t yet swiped! But then his FBI agent nemesis shows up to make sure he’s out of the stealing business! It all sounds like your standard heist picture routine, but Salma Hayek’s in it, so that makes it a must-see. ALFIE – (R) – A womanizing British playboy (Jude Law) in New York City finds that there are serious consequences to his carefree lifestyle. Starring Susan Sarandon, Marisa Tormei and Omar Epps. BIRTH – (R) – Drama – Nicole Kidman plays the young widow Anna who’s all set to start a new life when this cute little boy drops into her life claiming to be her reincarnated dead husband. Sounds pretty heavy. Also stars Lauren Bacall, Danny Huston and Cameron—Wait a sec! Did you say Lauren Bacall? THE Lauren Bacall?! Damn! THE GRUDGE – (PG13) – Horror – You know how your mama told you never to hold a grudge?

I’d like a large with sausage and olives, please Well, this little horror flick sets out to prove that point further as Sarah Michelle Gellar finds herself in a cycle of unresolved fury and a curse born of someone who... dunh duh!... held a grudge THE INCREDIBLES – (PG) – The Incredibles' follows the adventures of a family of former superheroes rediscovering the true source of their powers - in one another. Once one of the world's top masked crimefighters, Bob Parr (AKA Mr. Incredible) fought evil and saved lives on a daily basis. But fifteen years later, he and his wife Helen (a famous former superhero in her own right) have been forced to take on civilian identities and retreat to the suburbs. Voices by Craig T Nelson, Samuel Jackson, Holly Hunter. THE POLAR EXPRESS – (G) – Family, Animated – A boy struggles to believe in Santa Claus as all his friends and schoolyard chums make fun of him for being so gullible. Stupid chums. But then a giant steam train pulls up to his house to take him to the North Pole. Oh my God, it’s a ghost train! Run and hide! Oh wait, it’s just the 5:15 in from Baltimore. Late as usual… RAY – (PG13) – Musical Drama – The story of Ray Charles, blind from age seven, who famously merged Gospel, jazz and rhythm and blues music, all while fighting drug addiction and Southern segregation, eventually becoming one of the greatest American pianists of the 20th century. Stars Jamie Foxx and Regina King.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD - R - Comedy/Horror- Just when this poor 29-year-old schmuck is trying to make it up to his chick for being such a loser, the streets explode with zombies. Isn’t that always the way, guys? Now, instead of saving his relationship, the dude has to save London—at least, that’s what he’ll be telling his girlfriend later when he comes home late drunk, again. SURVIVING CHRISTMAS – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – Ben Affleck plays a rich record company exec who gets dumped by his girlfriend. Moping around and fearful of spending Christmas alone, he decides—for reasons that aren’t entirely clear—to go back to the home he grew up in and spend Christmas with the strangers who live there. Because this is a comedy, they turn out to be nuts. Also stars Christina Applegate and that dude who plays Tony Soprano.

PUREVOLUME BOSSACUCANOVA “UMA BATIDA DIFERENTE” Bossacucanova is the group that got me interested in the new Samba Nova Brazilian electronica sound a few years ago. Their latest album continues to update the classic sound and feeling of Brazilian Samba and Bossa Nova while updating it with out-ofthis-world production and tripped out percussion loops. “Samba da Minha Terra” features collaboration with Zuco 103— another excellent group in the same vein—creating an irresistible electro-samba, as well as the album’s best track. Playful Portuguese choruses infect me and I find myself reciting uncontrollably words I don’t understand. One of which is from “Vai Levando”—another collaboration, this time with Trio Mocotó, a ‘70s Rio funk group. Enchanting female vocals by Adriana Calcanhoto grace “Previsão” and another sultry voice gives an English rendition of Tom Jobim’s “Aguas de Marco.” Grooving to a different beat, Bossacucanova continues to establish the cutting edge of new Brazilian music with a lot of style. —Six Degrees Records, 2004 [JOE GATTO]

VOTED BEST SPORTS BAR ON MAUI!

Steve Tibbetts is a singular guitarist known for masterful forays into many different styles. Choying Drolma is a Tibetan nun with a deeply spiritual voice—her chanting is the star of the show. She handles the rich vocal texturing taking the listener to the Himalayas, as Tibbetts weaves together tapestries of acoustic and electric guitars, shifting drones and subtle hand percussion. Selwa was built around recordings made by Tibbetts and his longtime percussionist Marc Anderson in Boudhanath, a Tibetan enclave in Nepal. There, not far from a school for nuns that Chöying Drolma founded, they recorded her chants, creating an organic blend of ancient and modern, Eastern and Western music. —Six Degrees Records, 2004 [JOE GATTO]

This CD is like stripping all the paint and plaster off the Sistine Chapel and finding something completely beautiful and unexpected underneath. It is amazing to hear how well-crafted Lennon’s songs are, even in their rawest form. Acoustic contains a few of Lennon’s solo hits, however, all stripped down to his exquisite guitar playing and haunting voice. The production ranges from superb to the sublime—similar to Alan Lomax’s field recordings. In addition, there are triumphant live versions of “John Sinclair” and “Luck of the Irish,” recorded in Ann Arbor in 1971. Although it may seem naïve and innocent now, the message of love and hope that Lennon captures in these songs always continues to ring true. —Capitol Records, 2004 [STEPHEN R. HART]

DAY&NIGHT

The Blind Boys of Alabama are a fine addition to Ben Harper’s vocals, driving his gospel and soul-tinged voice with a new passion. “Where Could I Go” evokes Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” with its finely picked arpeggios and mournful singing. They also completely take over Dylan’s “Well Well Well,” which would fit in nicely on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Ben should collaborate more often because this is a fascinating record. —Virgin Records, 2004 [STEPHEN R. HART] Got Music? Frankie Sez... This week on ‘North Shore’

EVERYDAY EXCEPT DURING SPECIAL EVENTS MON, NOV 22ND

By Kellie R. Holliday

Because Tessa has been working so hard to promote the club, Frankie says she’s earned some time off—with him, of course. Vincent’s in Hong Kong at a “financial meeting,” which I think is what they call poker over there. Gabe then talks Erika into giving her parents the dream they’ve wanted, but their plans don’t work out so Erika leaves. Then Jason and Frankie have a little spat, but thankfully, things work out in the end. Finally MJ finally works up the courage to come clean to Chris. In return, he sabotages the radio show Dr. Clay broadcasts live from the hotel. Then Chris dumps MJ, saying he just can’t trust her.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Compensating sucks. Aren’t you sick of “making the best of” things? You’ve been doing that too often lately, trying to stay on the bright side of frequently less-than-ideal circumstances. Luckily, this week, you’re in for a handful of situations that play out exactly as you might’ve wished, if you were still in the habit of hoping for the best, instead of dealing with the worst. The danger is you’re so busy cringing from your imagined worst-case scenarios that you might not notice these best-case ones. Open your eyes—you’re in luck, for once. Go enjoy it.

You can’t plan a friendship the way you can a business deal. It’s far more subtle than that. Most people don’t form emotional bonds based purely on a point-by-point list of mutual benefits. The trouble is, you too often want things in the murky world of emotions to be as clean-cut and quick as negotiating and signing a contract, done deal. Luckily, it’s more complex and time-consuming than that; the last thing you need is another contract. You’ve got a drawerful already. Take the time this week to delicately begin to cultivate the new relationships you need and want; remember, it’s an art, not a science.

Whoever you’re waiting for won’t show. This could have something to do with the fact that you forgot to email them the address, and your phone’s out of batteries. Why would you unwittingly set them up to let you down? I suspect this wasn’t even a subconscious decision—you prepared this elaborate disappointment almost consciously, because it’s safer than daring to hope. Perhaps because it’s familiar. I understand your belief that everything ends in tragedy. You’re probably right. But your strategy of just cutting straight to inevitable disillusionment leaves out one important facet of the experience: all the fun you can have before the whole thing comes crashing down.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Can’t you leave well enough alone? You get a scratch and it’s barely stopped hurting before you’re already picking at it, messing with each new scab as it’s formed, invasively inspecting your new hurt constantly, until your flesh has no choice left but to form a permanent scar, whereas if you’d just given it a chance to heal, it would have disappeared in a few weeks without a blemish. Stop picking! This applies to emotional wounds as well as physical ones. Cover them with a bandage, or distract yourself, please. Let them heal. They actually will.

Your sarcasm has teeth; this becomes obvious whenever it rears around to bite you in the ass, especially during one of those rare occasions when you try to impress someone who’s less cynical than you. Your cutting humor misses them entirely, and they’ll respond by earnestly avowing adoration for whatever you’ve just made fun of. That’s your chance. You can either reveal your jaded bitterness and probably alienate your companion by making him or her feel stupid, or you can reclaim a bit of lost innocence, and figure out what you actually liked about the musical Cats. It’s your choice; one path takes you further down the seen-it, done-it road, the other leads you to more dorkiness, yes, but also more wonder (and less loneliness).

CURBSIDE RECYCLING!

CAMPING

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Just because you get your kicks from pornographic playing cards, pranks and dirty jokes doesn’t mean you’re immature. You’ve simply never forgotten how to play. Sadly, there are a few jerks prepared to sorely underestimate you, because they don’t get it. Usually you’d just say, “Screw ‘em,” and leave those clenched and joyless folk to their own devices; it’s plain that being themselves is punishment enough. But since they have something you want, it’s important that you edit their opinions of you. You could act serious and businesslike until you impress them, but I’d prefer you adopted the opposite strategy, and taught them how to play, instead—against their wills if necessary (it’s for their own good, and yours).

TO ADVERTISE Call 661-3786

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Take out the trash, already. It’s stinking up the whole house and attracting bugs, despite the chill of late autumn. It’s like you’re protesting a lazy roommate, but as you’re the only one who seems to notice all the problems your neglect is causing, it’s more a self-punishment. Because the trash I’m referring to is metaphorical anyway, and therefore inside you—it can’t really bother anyone but you. Therefore, deal with it. And address those you believe should take some interest in your emotional well-being the way one ought to deal with an indolent roomie: by directly and clearly asking for what you want.

Read a book backwards. You probably won’t make it more than a chapter or two, but so what? It’ll drive my point home: Skipping right to the end—in literature or life—is often possible, but absolutely boring. Trying to reverse-engineer a relationship almost never works. There’s not much point struggling through a novel from back to front—why would there be more enthusiasm for a human interaction in the same style? Start at the beginning, please. It’s more uncertain, sure, but also more fun. All that’s irrelevant anyway because it’s the only way that works.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

www.mauitime.com

The breatharian guru, Jasmuheen, when asked to demonstrate under scientific observation her claims that humans can survive on air and light alone, without food or water, collapsed on the fourth day, due to dehydration. If she’d continued, she would surely have died. I can understand why she advocates such preposterous claims; she makes a ton of money off them. But I don’t get why you think you can live without basic emotional necessities— you stand to gain nothing by such deprivations, except, perhaps, a nervous breakdown and some time off work. Revise your estimation of your fortitude based on common wisdom and start letting yourself eat and drink again.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Freedom is a tricky concept for Leos. While you’re often considered the most brazen and confident folk around, we both know you never actually stop caring, completely, what people think about you and reflect back at you. This is, sadly, the curse of being Sun-ruled. You need to see your radiance bounced back and thus you’re usually at least partially governed by the opinions of friends or strangers. However, this week astrological conditions have cut you off from the benefit and curse of that dynamic—you’re truly free, for just a brief blip. Take advantage of it and figure out what you really, really want. Then, once old habits set back in, make it your quest to pursue that true desire anyway.

DROP OFF 505 Front St. Ste. 216, Lahaina

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Your timing’s been off lately. It’s more annoying than truly damaging but I can imagine your frustration when you miss a train, phone call, or green light by mere seconds, over and over again. That irritation has had a cumulative effect and hampered your enjoyment of much of the rest of your time—so much so that a few people have started to grumble about your recent frequent grouchiness. Luckily, the time glitch is repairing itself and things should flow a little more smoothly this week—hopefully you’ll notice, and cheer up, before you acquire a reputation for bitchiness that you don’t want and really don’t deserve.

When I was a kid, I liked creative toys. I was happier with a pack of markers and some blank paper, a chest full of LEGO bricks, a few handfuls of Tinker Toys or even an empty box, than I ever was with action figures or toy cars. I liked the freedom the former playthings gave me and quickly grew bored with the limitations of toys whose purposes and identities had already been decided for me. Consider this childlike perspective when contemplating this week’s options. If they were toys, there’d be one you could play with right out of the box, but (if you’re honest with yourself) you’d probably get bored with soon. The other requires a lot more time and investment, but since its potential is limited only by your imagination, you’d probably enjoy playing with it for a much longer time—maybe even the rest of your life. HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Flesh for Fantasy Fasten your seat belts—It’s going to be a bumpy night. -Margo Channing (Bette Davis) in All About Eve My girl Sasha and I went to the “Male Dance Revue” at Casanova last Friday. It was a benefit for the Makawao Paniolo Parade that Sasha’s auntie was running, so she “coerced” us to attend. We had decided to have dinner and drinks first at the Italian restaurant, gaining liquid courage and full bellies to survive the night ahead. When it was time for the show, we were escorted to a table reserved just for us. Front row, center. The first dancer, “Ziggy Stardust,” walked onto the runway to Guns ‘N Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.” Sasha and I civilly sipped our champagne as we watched “Ziggy” strip down to his silk boxers. In the early 1970s, when Burt Reynolds first took off his clothes for Cosmopolitan, it birthed a new trend in mmm… nekked men. Films soon followed, in which muscular and barbaric hemen, wet and dirty with shredded t-shirts or loincloths leapt from vines (Tarzan), buildings (Die Hard), boxing rings (Rocky) and futuristic desert tanks (Mad Max). This theme seemed to reflect an opposition to the burgeoning feminist movement in the early 1980s. Objectifying the male body took another more decisive turn in the popularity of male exotic dancers, or Chippendales, which was hugely popular at that time in Los Angeles. As if some rite of passage, my mother and favorite aunt took me to a Chippendale’s in Hollywood on my 21st birthday. Thinking back, the ordeal was constructed more for their benefit than mine, as I found it to be a huge embarrassment and could barely lift my head to view the spectacle before me. Tall, tan, beefy men with perfectly oiled bodies pranced and preened on stage, seductively removing clothing while tossing their long, wavy locks and winking at their female audience, who had suddenly become this gluttonous mass of lipstick-ed shrieking. But that was many years ago. Now I was at Casanova. A song or two after Ziggy—maybe it was during Prince’s “Let’s Get Crazy” or it could’ve been Rick James’ “Super Freak,” hard to say—he made his way across the room to a vivacious radio personality, who began throwing dollars and spanking the male stripper with his own belt. Wacky, indeed! But hey, somebody had to be that girl and it sure as hell wasn’t gonna be me. In between dancers, the event’s emcee gave away prizes, like a dildo from the Love Shack, “in case your big thumb’s broken,” and a bag of coffee beans, “for when you wake up in the morning… with a stripper in your bed!” The second dancer sauntered out in cowboy hat and boots. Radio girl didn’t waste much time, as she sidled up to him and they performed a special pas de deux. “Their leather pants are going to stick together!” said Sasha, with some concern. A couple glasses of champagne did not prepare me for what was next, however. The lights were off, the music cued and all the women turned their attention to the stage once again. The emcee announced “Kawai” as a figure like Adonis appeared in white fishnet, tank top and baggy cotton/polyester pants with a stripe down the side. Still sipping our champagne, Sasha and I looked around at the hysteria of the women around us. “It’s a good thing he’s wearing his gym clothes,” she said, “’cause he’s gonna get a workout.” Then he approached me—ME!—dramatically stretched his tank top over his chiseled chest before ripping it, draping it around my shoulders and kissing my cheek. The women went wild. I was horrified. It was my cousin Eli. He was cute, well built and I had to admit, really knew how to work the crowd in his tighty whiteys. The women loved him. But I just couldn’t watch. Where was my chance for gross objectification of the male body? Later, when the dancers were done and the women crowded the dance floor with abandon, we concluded that the night was less about intellectualizing the societal roles gender and nudity play, and more about mindless release. “It’s like Disneyland for adults,” said Sasha. Exactly! It’s about returning to that innocent, liberating time in our lives when we were allowed to imagine and dream, without judgment or limitation— “No, it’s like Splash Mountain,” Sasha added. “All the girls are getting wet!” MTW
