Bookshelf Reviews Where we do judge a book by its cover According to the title and the painting on the front cover, this seems to be a story of crime and scandal and some knights who joust in Medieval France. It’s hardcover so it will last a while longer than your usual trade paperback, and it’s got a very nice dust jacket made of that really sharp paper that will slice open your index finger if you’re not careful when opening it.
The Last Duel A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager. 2004, Broadway Books, New York. $24.95. We don’t usually review books like this in Bookshelf Reviews because, well, a book like this on your home or office shelf exposes the owner to considerable risk. It’s apparently loved by people who wrote books—medieval porn, really—called The Honest Courtesan, The Burgermeister’s Daughter, A Mighty Fortress and In the Wake of the Plague. Do those sound like books you want alongside your copies of the Time/Life Picture History of World War II and Call Me Lefty: The true story of how I hacked off my own arm with a penknife after I got pinned under a boulder while hiking and then crawled 12 miles out of the wilderness? Look, I don’t want to be graphic here, but those books I just mentioned are Man Books. As for the ones that have words like “mighty” and “honest” in the titles—well, not so much. I mean, hey, if you’re a chick, no sweat—but no man wants to be known as that guy who always goes to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire every year because he likes it and, when talking about his experiences at ye olde Renaissance Pleasure Faire the next day with his friends and colleagues, irritates everyone by constantly referring to it as the “Ren Faire.” Don’t be that guy! That guy sucks! It’s
because of those guys that this country doesn’t make any more steel! Having said all that, the case for dumping the book in the Goodwill box isn’t so clear. That’s in large part due to the back cover “Advance Praise” quotes. They use all the best buzzwords: “Passion,” “thriller,” “suspense,” “sex,” “cruelty,” “thriller” a second time, “savagery” and “erudition.” It’s got scandal and intrigue, but it’s not a novel! It’s got action and suspense, but it’s not made up! It’s got sex and savagery, but it’s not the latest episode of Fox’s new hit drama LAX, starring Heather Locklear and Blair Underwood. So basically, The Last Duel is a tough call. But if my reputation’s on the line, then I gotta say don’t go for it—if for no other reason than that really elaborate, raised script they put all over the front cover. Writing “Duel” with all them ruffles and flourishes just totally ruins the effect. MTW
EH BRAH! Send anonymous thanks, confessions or accusations, 200 words or less, changing or deleting the names of the guilty and innocent to “Eh Brah!” c/o Maui Time Weekly, 658 Front Street, Ste. 126A–7278, Lahaina, HI 96761 or send an e-mail to
ehbrah@mauitime.com I just want to say thanks to whatever two guys helped subdue that drugged-out freak last week over at the south end of Baby Beach in Lahaina. This meth-smoking bagger was physically harassing a tourist by splashing him with water, while the tourist held a baby. Then the bagger followed the dad and baby into the water and kept cursing and splashing! After things calmed down and both parties returned to the beach, I figured something else was gonna happen, so I called the police and ran to Front Street to flag them down. While I was waiting, the bagger walked back over to the family and kicked Dad in the face. That’s when you two guys tackled the fool and held him in some pretty impressive wrestling holds until the police arrived. Some people would have sat there, not wanting to get involved. But not you two guys. Thanks.

End of the Line Our intrepid reporter rides the choo-choo train Keoni’s disembodied voice rushes tinny, headache-inducing speakers: “Hello everyone my name is Keoni and I on the behalf of the entire Sugar Cane Train staff would like to extend a hearty ALOOOOOO-HAAA!” A pause ensues, followed by a meager “aloha” in return. So began my six-mile journey from Lahaina to Kaanapali on the Sugar Cane Train. To my immediate left sat Mr. and Mrs. Woodward from Dallas. Everyone else however, was from Japan, herded aboard from a gigantic tour bus. Each Japanese tourist had an orange sticker on his or shirt indicating which group they were from. Some were very old, with hunched backs and thick glasses. Others were younger and trendier, wearing baseball caps and Converse. Regardless of age, each seemed to enjoy the Sugar Cane Train tremendously, grinning widely and taking a great many photographs. Modern Hawaiian history is essentially a story of resources. At its peak in the 19th Century, the Pioneer Mill Company harvested more than 45,000 pounds of sugar per year, employing just over 1,500 people. The Lahaina and Ka’anapali Pacific Railroad, now known as the “Sugar Cane Train,” was once used to transport all this sugar and to bring all those employees to their plantation homes. As time passed, the lure of lavish resorts, white sand beaches and para-sailing replaced sugar as the basis for the Maui economy. The Pioneer Mill processed its last harvest in the fall of 1999, effectively ending the sugar industry on West Maui. Down but not out, the train was able to cash in on the tourist trade. By marketing the Sugar Cane Train as a quaint activity devoted to the historical relevance of the plantation, the company turned their old railroad into one of the top West Maui tourist attractions. Today the ride began in Lahaina. We crawled uneasily down the narrow gauge track along a series of perfunctory tourist sites: A specially planted patch of sugar cane “so people will know what it is like,” a golf course and a “real green water tank.” Should anyone ask about the existence of a fake water tank, Keoni said, “Remember folks, this is a working water tank that we here at the Sugar Cane Train actually use.” While the coaches aren’t the exact ones used on the original LK&P railroad—those were sold to a wealthy train collector in the 1950s—they are “exact replicas” of those that ran the Hawaiian Railroad in the 1880s. They look a lot like the Himalayan

All it needs is Casey Jones “toy trains” that travel through India. Their exaggerated grandeur, primary colors and gaudy décor give all the impression of 19th century extravagance, only a bit tackier. More interesting are the subtle fragments of life passengers can witness by watching the backs of homes. When I was in Europe, I cherished riding the trains because they went right through residential areas. As I would speed by on the German U-Bahn, the British Underground or the Parisian Metro, I would see briefly into apartments and make up imaginary stories about them. As we choo-chooed on down the line on the Sugar Cane Train, I saw half-built treehouses, murals people were painting, children waving at the train, antique cars awaiting restoration, a weight bench with the words “God Bless You” sprayed across it in garish gold paint. I saw mango trees, parrots and low rider bikes, people practicing the trumpet and viciouslooking dogs tied to trees. As we passed the disheveled carcasses of tractors, old cars, outhouses and dirt piles, I saw new housing developments being built. My eyes followed shiny new roads snaking up the hills like veins, pushing neighborhoods further and further up the mountains. We slowly drove by the back of a giant Buddha statue. A swirl of excitement and familiarity reverberated through the Japanese group. The ambient Hawaiian music intended to entertain us faded behind the sound of hundreds of cameras snapping shots. But what really got the tourists into a frenzy was when the train passed by the Ka’anapali skyline. It was ironic, considering that it was precisely the demise of sugar and the selling

off of old cane lands that made all those hotels and golf courses possible. Necks craned and camera lenses buzzed as they tried to take in the spacious resorts. The Woodwards didn’t understand the excitement. “Hell,” Mr. Woodward said, shaking his head. “It’s just a damn hotel.” MTW
Covering Maui County Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearings can be a lonely job. The public gallery is usually filled each month, but with sulking, bitter or just plain scared bar and restaurant owners and their attorneys. Despite the fact that the LC holds tremendous power over a huge segment of the Maui economy, the department has always been pretty much ignored by the local media. Until the Nov. 9 hearing, that is. That was the day of the big Hyatt Regency Maui case. It was a packed house. Kirk Fernandes and his cameraman from KHON Channel 2 on Honolulu were there, as were two local photographers and three print reporters, not including yours truly. Timothy Hurley of the Honolulu Advertiser Maui Bureau was there. So was the Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s Gary T. Kubota. As was The Maui News’ Mark Adams. They were strangers in a strange land, thrown into a quasi-judicial world in which nine political appointees sit around a U-shaped table, listen to testimony and then judge the guilt or innocence of liquor licensees in secret. The press corps complained loudly when the Board moved the Hyatt case from the top of the agenda to the end, then damn near rioted when the Board went into closed deliberations for the first time. “Do you know why they’re closing?” asked one reporter. “Can they do that?” asked another. “Are they consulting with an attorney?” asked the first reporter. “Because if they are…” “I don’t know,” said a third. “This is my first experience.” Welcome to my world. The reporters argued with LC Director Franklyn Silva. Though they demanded and eventually received on-therecord quotes and legal citations justifying the board’s star-chamber like deliberations, none ended up referencing the matter in their coverage. During one of the deliberation breaks, the press pool milled about in an adjoining office. One guy marveled at the Board’s relief whenever a defendant asked that they waive the reading of the actual complaint. “They don’t like to have them read the complaints,” he said, “but then they read from the police reports, which is even longer.” Then another told a moderately funny joke about George W. Bush and the definition of the word “tragedy.” MTW

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, NOV. 17 Better make that insanely long and hot hike to the Fishbowl and the Aquarium in the Ahihi-Kinau reserve pretty soon, because it’s looking like all public access to those incredibly beautiful but delicate coves is going to get shut down. That’s what eight of the nine Ahihi-Kinau/Keoneioio Advisory Group members voted to do, according to today’s Maui News. Seems they’re sick of rubes walking over the stove-like lava fields and then dumping sunscreen and other inappropriate substances into the once-pristine waters… Not quite sure how I ended up on Smith & Wesson’s “Firearms & Outdoor Media” list, but I ain’t arguing with it. Not when I get emails like today’s “Smith & Wesson Goes Hollywood,” which announces that the 152-year-old Springfield, Massachusetts gun-maker has just retained agent Norm Marshall Associates (NMA) to “get S&W branded products in many categories into the hands of America’s entertainment hero’s [sic] on-screen.” Mixing Smith & Wesson’s “authentic brand” with Hollywood action movies? I don’t know— then again, that might just be crazy enough to work! Tom Taylor, Smith & Wesson’s vice president in charge of marketing, agrees, adding in the release that his company also wants product placement “in TV programs like the three CSI series, Deadwood, Las Vegas, and other topical series where our heritage and authenticity fits the storyline.” Guns and Hollywood… I never thought I’d see the day.

leave our lovely islands for the cold, brutal beltway world? What would she take? Commerce? Energy? Agriculture? Some other plum not yet announced? “I think they’re well aware,” Lingle told the Associated Press yesterday, “and I’ve tried to be as public as I can—that I’m not interested in leaving Hawaii.” Really? An ambitious young upstart Republican like her? She’d really tell Dubya, “Thanks, but no thanks, Mr. President, but I’d much rather be governor of the 40th biggest state in the union?” No fooling? Or is she just holding out for something better—something more high profile than the nation’s chief of corn subsidies. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff? Not qualified. Treasury Secretary? Not qualified. Homeland Security Director? Not qualified. Supreme Court Justice? Definitely not qualified. Secretary of Transportation? Perhaps. Boss of Housing and Urban Development? Possibly. Chief of staff to the deputy assistant director in charge of oiling the hinges on mailboxes? We have a winner!
Let there be dark: Why is it that the Maui County Council is really, really great at pushing through stuff that’s bad like big development projects but drags its feet when it comes time to do long-term good stuff like making sure our children and grandchildren see a night sky every bit as dark and beautiful as the one we enjoy? The current argument is between Councilmen Michael Molina and Dain Kane. Molina wants a dark sky agreement right now, Kane not so much. So they’re arguing over arcane matters—should it be based on wattage or lumens? Should it force resorts to rip up parking lots to replace current lights with bulbs that are not so bright? No, by all means, please continue to dick around on this one. Hey, it’s only the night sky. I mean, we can see the Milky Way anywhere, right? Meteors? Overrated. And all those constellations—they’re distracting. Screw the nighttime sky.

SATURDAY, NOV. 20 What is this, the week of great ideas? The AP reported today that the University of Hawaii Board of Regents have decided that it’s a good idea if they built something called a “military research center” on campus in exchange for getting fat, juicy U.S. government contracts worth at least $50 million. Now when I think of public institutions of higher learning and research, I certainly think of making better weapons with which to kill our vastly multiplying enemies. “The military has done more to damage our lands than anything else, including the bombing of Pearl Harbor,” the AP quoted campus Native Hawaiian organizer Manu Kaiama as warning. “Do not prostitute our home for money.”

MONDAY, NOV. 22 The Maui News does a big write-up on developer Kent Smith’s Pu’unoa Village. The County Council only has until, oh, tomorrow to figure this thing out AGAIN. And overall, the project hasn’t changed much since they rejected it last year, though it now sports even more homes and costs about $14 million more than its old $33 million price tag. Other than that, it’s the same old big home project masquerading as a place where poor people will be able to buy homes. It’s still getting “fast-tracked” through the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii, which means Smith doesn’t have to write an Environmental Assessment (EA) of the extent his new neighborhood will tear up the land, plunge run-off into our ocean and snarl our traffic. In fact, it’s because Smith isn’t doing an EA that Corporation Counsel Brian Moto recommended to the council that they reject the plan yet again. When you start factoring in the fact that Smith tends to build tiny, tiny homes that don’t seem to be of the highest quality—numerous residents of the Smith’s Kahana Nui Village complained to me last year of plumbing problems caused by poor construction—the whole thing becomes comical. Why is this still an issue? If the council junks Pu’unoa tomorrow, is Smith going to come back for Round Three?… Bored at night, I turn on the TV. Flipping through the channels, I come to Fox News, which is running Hannity & Colmes. Their in-studio guest is syndicated Maui Time columnist and cartoonist Ted Rall. I watch for a few seconds. “You’re a sick human being,” Hannity tells Rall. “Yay Ted!” I cheer, though I have no idea what a tolerant, progressive guy like Hannity would have against the ruthlessly anti-Dubya Rall.
TUESDAY, NOV. 23 Buried in today’s top Maui News story about the good 2005 economic future predicted by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO, I guess) is this little nugget: “On the downside, the deployment of more than 10,000 military troops based on Oahu has had a negative economic influence this year that will extend into 2005.” The loss of just 10,000 was enough to hurt the Oahu economy? What’s going to happen when we mobilize for Iran? MTW
NEWSOFTHEWEIRD TOTALLY INSANE PEOPLE New Scientist magazine reported in October that psychologists seem to be reclassifying people who are permanently uninterested in sex, from the old notion that such behavior was a disorder to the emerging position that it is merely a sexual preference of “none of the above.” (Asexuals profess no sexual attraction at all, encompassing loners reluctant to associate with people and gregarious, caring people whose natural inclination is to relate to others nonsexually.) Recent research estimated that one percent of the population is asexual, and in previous research, 40 percent of asexuals described themselves as “extremely” or “very” happy. An asexuality support group (AVEN) touts its best-selling T-shirt, “Asexuality: It’s not just for amoebas anymore.”
ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION Jackie Lee Shrader, 49, and his son, Harley Lee, 24, had a brief shootout with .22-caliber handguns, provoked when the pair confronted each other over how to cook skinless chicken for dinner (Bluewell, West Virginia, September). And Niccolo Rossodivita, 62, shot Billy Cordova, 40, twice in the chest after Cordova followed him around their house prolonging their argument over Jesus Christ’s correct name (Wasilla, Alaska, September). And Angela Morris, 19, was charged with assaulting her boyfriend by pouring boiling oil on him during an argument over a Bible verse (Eugene, Oregon, May).
HEALTH CARE REFORM Thomas Patrick Remo, 50, was arrested in September in Dallas and charged with practicing gynecology without a license. Remo had a stream of female customers who apparently did not think it odd that

The officer spoke to the juvenile about experimenting with sexuality and how he needs to be more careful in the future.”
CREME DE LA WEIRD Australian sleep-disorder expert Dr. Peter Buchanan caused a stir in October when he told reporters that the odd behavior of “sleep sex”— leaving home at night in a deep sleep and seeking random sex with strangers—would soon be included in the next version of the sleep disorder manual. Said Buchanan, anticipating skepticism, “Incredulity is the first staging post for anyone involved in this [study].”

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Paul Michael Callahan, 32, was arrested in Boston in August after what the police called a short career as a bank robber. Callahan’s life of crime began badly when he tried to hold up the copy shop at Boston University, believing it was a bank. The clerk asked, “Do you know you’re in a copy store and all we can give you is copies?” Callahan fled but allegedly robbed a Fleet Bank branch a few minutes later—stealing less than $200—and then a Citizen’s Bank branch, clearing about $2,500. However, the red-dye pack from Citizen’s exploded, distracting him. Then his getaway car got a flat tire. Police found him hiding in a gas station.

Win or lose, Kerry voters are smarter than Bush voters Democratic hand wringing is out of hand. No one is criticizing the morally incongruous Kerry for running against a war he voted for while insisting that he would have voted for it again. Party leaders have yet to consider that NAFTA, signed into law under Clinton, may have cost them high-unemployment Ohio. No, Indiana Senator Evan Bayh, darling of the “centrist” Democratic Leadership Council, blames something else: The perception “in the heartland” that Democrats are a “bicoastal cultural elite that is condescending at best and contemptuous at worst to the values that Americans hold in their daily lives.” First, living in the sticks doesn’t make you more American. Rural, urban or suburban—they’re irrelevant. San Francisco’s predominantly gay Castro district is every bit as red, white and blue as the Texas panhandle. But if militant evangelical Republicans from inland backwaters believe that secular liberal Democrats from the big coastal cities look upon them with disdain, there’s a reason. We do, and all the more so after this election.

Time 9:22 a.m. A friend of a tourist filed a complaint against the “unsanitary condition of the restrooms.” The report states that, “from outside of restroom there is a bad odor. Didn’t want to use the facilities because of bad condition. This happened on more than one occasion.” On Mar. 10 the Health Department’s Sanitation Branch informed the owner of the complaint. The sanitarian conducting the inspection wrote in her report that the “restrooms are cleaned daily and frequently throughout the day. Women’s restroom OK. Men’s restroom has some odor as soon as you enter.” The sanitarian told the owner to take care of the problem. A follow-up inspection on Mar. 15 found no odor in the men’s room. -Lauren Dahl
I spent my childhood in fly-over country, in a decidedly Republican town in southwest Ohio. It was a decent place to grow up, with well-funded public schools and only the occasional marauding serial killer to worry about. My suburb was racially insular, culturally bland and intellectually unstimulating. Its people were knee-jerk conformists. Faced with the prospect of spending my life underemployed, bored and soused, I did what anyone with a bit of ambition would do. I went to college in a big city and stayed there. Mine is a common story. Every day in America, hundreds of our most talented young men and women flee the suburbs and rural communities for big cities, especially those on the West and East Coasts. These oases of liberal thinking—New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Boston—are homes to our best-educated people, most vibrant popular culture and most innovative and productive businesses. “How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?” asked the headline of the Daily Mirror in Great Britain, and the underlying assumption is undeniable. By any objective standard, you had to be spectacularly stupid to support Bush. Seventy-two percent of those who cast votes for George W. Bush, believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or active WMD programs, says a University of Maryland’s Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) and a Knowledge Networks poll. Seventy-five percent think a Saddam HusseinAl Qaeda link actually existed. Twenty percent say Saddam ordered the attacks on 9/11. Of course, none of this was true. But educational achievement doesn’t necessarily equal intelligence. After all, Bush holds a Harvard MBA. Still, it bears noting that Democrats are better educated than Republicans. You are 25 percent more likely to hold a college degree if you live in the Democratic northeast than in the red state south. Blue state voters are 25 percent more likely, therefore, to understand the historical and cultural ramifications of Bush’s brand of bull-in-a-china-shop foreign policy. Inland Americans face a bigger challenge than coastal “cultural elitists” when it comes to finding high-quality news coverage. The best newspapers, which routinely win prizes for their in-depth local and national reporting and staffers overseas, line the coasts. So do the cable TV networks with the broadest offerings and most independent radio stations. Bush Country makes do with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity syndicated on one cookie-cutter AM outlet after another. Citizens of the blue states read lackluster dailies stuffed with generic stories cut and pasted from wire services. Given their dismal access to high-quality media, it’s a minor miracle that 40 percent of Mississippians turned out for Kerry. MTW

TEAM CHICA Surfing Jaws with the Patterson sisters “Once I had made the decision not to go out, it felt so good,” she said. “I knew right then what my limits were. And I felt so strong for Schell. They dropped me off with another ski to make our ski lighter.” Now it was her sister Schell’s turn. “I saw Schell getting ready to select her wave and I was just like, ‘No way!’” said Lindsey. “I was so stoked for her.” By now there were a lot of guys in the water, and they saw what Schell was going to do. “Girls should not be here!” more than one of them yelled. The yelling bothered Schell, but she tried to stay focused. One of the smaller waves, which looked about 25 feet high, came by. She took it. But within seconds it didn’t look that good anymore. “Suddenly my board cavitated and I wiped out,” Schell said. “I got held under for a while. It felt like a really big washing machine and it was pretty scary.” For those watching on the cliff, it looked as though Schell was gone—squashed beneath a wave taller than a three-story building. “[But] I knew I was going to make it,” said Schell. “I came out of that wave, got a few seconds to breathe and then I got beat by another wave. Then they came in with the ski and picked me up.” Schell laughed as she remembered the day. Like her sister, she’s young, full of energy and passion. “Yeah, that was my first big wave experience at Jaws,” she said. “It felt so good. It was pretty nuts!”

The Patterson sisters of Haiku will never forget the first day they went out and surfed the monster waves at Jaws. Yeah, Jaws—the world famous spot on Maui’s North Shore where the tow-in guys go. Lindsey, 22, and her sister Schell, 19, are not big muscled guys, but they still wanted to surf Jaws. On Saturday, Jan. 10 of this year, they went for it. “When we got down to Maliko, the waves were breaking all the way up to where the parking lot is,” said Schell. “We got psyched up and got together—me, my Dad and my sister—and we prayed.” Their jet ski was the first out that day, among the massive sets. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Schell. “It was one of the biggest days in 10 years. More people were coming out and I was getting psyched. I remember saying to myself ‘I am ready to do this.’” For months they had prepared for this moment. Lindsey, whose wrist was in a cast, didn’t want to go first, even though she had been practicing for weeks. “It is so insane when you are out there sitting on the ski, watching the lip hit the bottom of the wave,” said Lindsey. [Then you] feel that shake when you are in the lineup. I was getting psyched out because I had that wrist injury. I felt like I couldn’t do it that day and that was one of the hardest things for me to deal with. I knew if I wasn’t there mentally, I would be putting my team in danger.” Lindsey decided against a ride that day.

could die. For obvious reasons, Jaws veterans tend to be super fit and tough men. Lindsey and Schell Patterson, who make up what they call Team Chica, are different. Their sponsor isn’t Maui Built— it’s Maui Girl. “This past winter was our debut,” said Lindsey. “Girls who surf Jaws? People were pretty baffled. This coming winter I see us being there. We really are a girl towing team and I will be towing my sister out.” The Patterson sisters have spent their whole lives on Maui, never far from the water. “When we were younger my dad would take us to the beach a lot,” said Schell. “We were like surf rats our whole life. My dad was always windsurfing or surfing so we always went with him. We were at the beach every day from when we were little.” Their father surfed Jaws many years ago. They heard a lot of surf stories from him. Home-schooled by their mother until they were teens, they surfed, windsurfed and participated in triathlons and biathlons. Since they’ve started driving, they head to the water at least three times a week. “We live in Haiku, so our main spot is Ho’okipa since it’s only a 15-minute drive,” said Schell.

Dave Kalama is one of the most famous big wave surfers in the world. His courage and wave knowledge have few peers. He’s counselled Lindsey and Schell about what they’re trying to do. When I spoke to him for this story, he clearly appreciated the Patterson girls’ courage. But he was also cautious. “I think it’s cool, but it makes me nervous,” he said. “I spoke to Lindsey and she seems pretty aware of a lot of the dynamics that are important, but I am still not sure if they are completely aware of everything. There is no substitute for experience and no need to rush.” I can still remember the first time I saw someone surf Jaws. Standing way above the water on top of the cliff, I watched the huge sets roll in. The ground rumbled as each wave—some as high as 60 feet—slammed into the shore. Jaws, the popularized name for Pe’ahi, is a surfer’s Mount Olympus. For many years the idea of riding the waves was considered fantasy. It wasn’t possible to paddle fast enough, they said. Then surfers began towing into the waves behind jet skis. Problem solved, for the most part. No one plays at Jaws—those who aren’t dead serious end up seriously dead. Even guys who’ve surfed there for years know deep down the waves are impossible to master. At any time they go out there, they
“If it’s too small to shortboard, we will longboard,” said Lindsey. “Just getting in the water is important.” They run in the soft sand at Baldwin Beach, practice tow-surfing, run under water with rocks in their arms to train their lungs and do other fun things. “We hold onto the rope behind the jet ski and when the jet ski goes, you dive under and hold on as long as you can,” said Schell. “When you can’t breathe anymore you just let go and come up. The Jet Ski goes about eight to 10 miles per hour. To feel the weight when you hold on is good training for your body. You are going to wipe out at Jaws sooner or later no matter how good you are, so when you go under, your body is prepared to being whipped and tossed around under water.” Tow-in surfing is a team sport. The surfer relies on the driver. After a while, they switch positions. The Pattersons are training to tow each other, but so far, their father Roy has towed them into the big waves. They say he trained them to deal with just about any contingency. “We both have launched the ski at Maliko Gulch and know everything about the ski,” said Lindsey. “Changing the spark plugs, the oil mixture, the gas, getting the ski ready and making sure everything is good, because when you tow in the ski is

paramount. You don’t want it to be breaking down in the line-up.” The sisters also focus a lot on stretching and yoga, always preparing for the possible wipe out. “Stretching helps,” said Lindsey. “Yoga is really good because if you are flexible, your muscles are not so tense, so you are more limber when you are under and you maybe don’t come up with your neck tweaked.” In addition to training, Lindsey has been learning the art of board shaping for the last two and a half years. And they talked with Dave Kalama. “He was such an inspiration,” said Lindsey. “He was really cool and he has so much experience. I mean, he has been out there for years, and we are just getting started. At the end of my conversation with
ferent goals and approaches, but the wave has a way of taking care of itself. It’s picking and choosing who belongs there. I would hate to see anything bad to happen to anyone out there because they rushed in.”
Dave, he said, ‘Well, that’s my two cents. I walked away and thought, That was way more than two cents worth, man. As I listened to Dave’s feedback about tow-surfing and our team, I realized that there is no hurry to prove anything.” “I would suggest them getting more experience,” Kalama told me. “I would hate to see anybody out there when it’s really big who I have never seen out there when it’s small. If they are patient and gain knowledge that they get with experience, then they will be ready. A lot of people rush in— unfortunately the consequences of not succeeding out there can be extreme. “I think it is really important that they approach it conscientiously,” he continued. “It is not my place to say who belongs out there and who doesn’t—everybody’s got dif-
When Schell disappeared beneath the waves on Jan. 10, her sister Lindsey was sitting impotently on another jet ski. “There was nothing I could do,” she told me. “Basically I just prayed. The first thing I thought was that Schell was going to make it. I was nervous but I knew that she was going to be okay, because she was ready for that.” Schell made it back to shore without any injuries, but neither went back into the water again that day. Instead, they went back to training. They returned to Jaws in March. There were no monster waves, but there were plenty of big ones to practice on. All they can do is keep practicing and training. When she’s not in the water, Lindsey helps out at her dad’s construction business, specializing in interior and exterior painting. She also works at the Makawao Steakhouse. Her sister Schell is a member of “Youth With a Mission.” She once travelled with the group to Bolivia. She’s currently attending the Maui Upcountry School of Therapeutic Massage.

In no hurry to prove anything.
Like her sister, she also works part-time in construction, as a roofer. “It’s so good to be working with your hands,” said Schell. “We are doing a blue tile roof and the blue tiles are pretty heavy. Just carrying the cement and the tiles up the ladder is good training, too.” Still, no matter how much they train and work, they still hear those voices back on Jan. 10, telling them that girls didn’t belong in the water. “Maybe they have accepted us now, recognized that we really are serious about this,” said Lindsey. “It would be great to have constructive criticism about the sport. After all, we are still rookies out there. Only more experience is needed.” “We know it is their territory,” said Schell. “I think they just want everyone to be safe. Their concern might come across as just giving us a hard time, but I think it’s all good intentions with everyone out there. All the people who give us good encouragement, it’s much appreciated. Hearing good things from people give us more encouragement. For any other big wave surfers—if they have any feedback and knowledge to pass on, that is encouraging. Don’t get frustrated or weird if you see two girls out in the line. Come talk to us and introduce yourself. We really appreciate that.” MTW

ALBEE LAYER Pro surfer of the future Albee Layer was still a baby when his parents took him surfing for the first time at Thousand Peaks. “I had Albee in a one-piece water suit with built-in flotation,” recalls his mother, Connie. “And after we caught a few waves in the white water together, an old friend, Laird Hamilton, paddled Albee out on the front of his board into some four-footers and caught a wave. Laird stood up surfing and grabbed Albee by the back of his suit and stood him up on the board. I’ll never forget it.” The next year at Launiupoko, Albee stood up on the board on his own. He began competing when he was four. When he was five he went off island for his first contest—the Rell Sunn surf event in Haliewa. He competed in his first nationally ranked event at 10. Today at age 13 he maintains ranking in the top five nationally for his division. Sponsored by Billabong, Albee has benefited from a travel allowance and victory incentive when he places in the top rankings of any major competition. Mom and Dad usually pick up the rest of his surfing tab. In fact, they believe all his competition has instilled confidence as well as demonstrated the importance of proper surf etiquette. His parents Connie, who works as an ER nurse, and Al Layer, a paramedic, have surfed for at least the last 25 years. These days Al surfs less than he golfs, but he always travels with his son to competitions. Connie also spends a lot of time driving Albee and friends to and from surf spots before and after school. Most of the photographs hanging in the Layer house show family members in exotic surf locations. They include Baja, Australia, Panama and Namotu, which is a privately owned island in the South Pacific

that’s also one of most exclusive surfing destinations in the world. People surf their whole lives and dream of going to these places. Albee Layer visited all of them before he was nine. Albee says his best surf trip was to Namotu. That’s where he got his first chance to tow-in surf. “Everything at Namotu revolves around surfing and you don’t have to do anything else,” he told me. “Food and lodging are totally taken care of and all you have to worry about is when you want to surf.” When I asked him about his worst surfing experience, Albee got quiet. He and a friend were surfing a place they call “Death Point.” Albee wiped out, then got stuck on the inside of the break. After being hit by several waves, he washed up on an out-cropping of rocks. He was sitting four or five feet out of the water when another set came in. This continued for some time, washing Albee up and down the rocks and in and out of the water. Finally, a sea of white water dragged him to the inside of the bay, allowing him to scramble out of the water. Albee says the experience scared him, but not enough to stop surfing. He still paddles out to his favorite spot on the North Shore, Kuau Pipe. Thanks to his parents, Albee gets to surf most mornings before school. The waves are best then, and his mom usually wants to go, too. Sometimes, he’s back in the water after school. Then it’s time for homework and dinner. Albee says he has an agreement with his parents—as long as he maintains at least a 3.5 grade point average, he can keep surfing. And he doesn’t even have to do the dishes after dinner. So far, it seems to be working. MTW

SURF SCHOOL FOLLIES Dan Nevilles on higher education
You know that commercial for Expedia where the surf instructor is teaching the pretty girl and she’s flirting with him while her boyfriend is watching and getting scared? People ask me all the time if my job is like that. I had this one student ask me if I was going to be that way with his wife. I took one look at his wife and told him it was not going to be a problem. I didn’t get a tip from him.

Once I had a Russian girl as a student. She was with her husband, but I think she was a mail order bride. Her husband never called by her name, but just kept calling her “the Russian.” Anyway, she got on all fours on the board. She gets into trouble. All she has to do is jump off or fall off. But she doesn’t. She goes right into the wall. Bam! Next time, she goes right into the rocks. Bam! “What should I do?” she’s yelling at me. “Anything except what you’re doing,” I yelled back. She was crying and all bloody when we got back. All she had to do was fall off the board. But she was so terrified. She was getting her degree in chemistry, so I know she wasn’t stupid. I always ask my students what they do for a living. It tells me how they’ll react. For instance, if they’re accountants or any type of analyst, they’re going to be bad at learning. That’s because they can’t flow with it. They’re too worried about details.

being held underwater is like. Closing your eyes or asking for a manager is not going to help you. Especially the tough guys. I want them to get pounded. After that, I’ve got their full and undivided attention. I had this cop. He was a tough guy in a group of five. A real “I’m in charge, I’m in control” kind of guy. So this guy’s giving me a hard time. His wife can’t get on the board. He starts yelling at me. So I tell him to go out into the surf. He paddles out. Then I see a tiger shark gnawing on a turtle. We had to go get him. He’s bitching, I’m helping his wife, then I sent him out on his own hoping he’d go over the falls. I had no idea there was a shark out there. Those who don’t listen to me, I send right over the falls. But when they go over the falls, they always say “Nooooo!” and inhale a lot of water. Then they blame me for not telling them to close their mouths.
I can surf well. I can pull into big waves. But I’m the worst surfer of all my friends who surf, and I teach. Therein lies the foundation for the comedy. I think the worst surfers make the best teachers. Some of my students are terrified. They’re not used to the water. You’ve got to get around that. Fear causes hesitation and hesitation causes your worst fears to come true. I have the most trouble with mothers. That’s why I always separate them from their kids. Then I tell the kids that the most dangerous people to you are your parents. Mothers are terrible students. That’s because Mom is used to being Mom. “You’ve been surfing for five minutes,” I tell them when they question me or try to tell their kids what to do. “Why are you questioning your instructor?” A lot of parents are just afraid of everything. There’s a two-page waiver you have to sign before the lesson, saying that if I kill your kid, it’s not my fault. They sign that, and now they’re really freaked out. I’d say 75 percent of my students who are mothers have trouble letting go of the board. They actually have trouble letting go. How classic is that?
Now ER doctors are my favorites. They’re in shape, adrenaline junkies and they’ve seen the worst of the worst. They’re perfect students. Remember when Yoda was trying to teach Luke in Star Wars—stacking rocks, saying that he was always thinking about the past or the future, not what he was doing right then? I tell my students to forget the past and fuck the future. You have to be free. Then you have all control over your limbs and you can do things. Fear is a healthy emotion. It keeps us alive. People tell me all the time they’re not afraid of anything. I tell them they’re fools. You get people who are used to timeouts. Not long ago I had some pretty L.A. girls. They wanted to stop, but there was a set coming and the wall in front of them. They couldn’t stop—there’s no breather in surfing. Even in skiing you can stop, just fall down and walk off the mountain, but not in surfing. They were hyperventilating and not on their boards. I couldn’t slap them and I couldn’t pick them up and carry them out. Waves started coming in, pushing them further and further into a bad spot. I told them they had to ride it out. Even if they just rode on their stomachs, they had to confront their fear and ride it out.
They weren’t used to that. They were from L.A.—they’re used to guys kissing their asses all the time. They drive SUVs. The only danger they’ve ever gotten into was rear-ending someone and then wondering how much it was going to cost Daddy. I had this one kid. He was 90 percent blind. He couldn’t find his surfboard—it was attached to his leg. Oh, and he was deaf. Everyone was like, “There’s a problem with your student!” “No,” I said, “he’s just blind and deaf.” He surfed perfect for a student. Once I taught an 80-year old woman. She was all by herself, and I thought I was going to kill her. But she was real nice, so we paddled out. She ended up riding one wave perfect, but rode it all the way to the beach. I thought she was in trouble, but she said she just wanted to surf once. We were done in an hour and she tipped me. At the end of the job, 90 percent of the time my students are happy. They’ve confronted their fear of the ocean or of being out by themselves. You can see it in their eyes—they’ve clearly been affected. How many family photos have been in? I could run for president some day—if my sordid past goes away. MTW

Levi Siver, 23, seemed to be one of the kids’ favorites. “I’m happy to be an ambassador to the windsurfing youth,” he said. “I want to get them more involved and get companies, which usually cater to the older generation, to back the kids too. We need to build more youth programs so that windsurfing continues to prosper like other extreme sports.” There’s no question that including kids in the 19th Annual Aloha Classic Wave Championship generated a great deal of interest. There’s no reason why this group of kids won’t, as Kai Lenny hopes, emerge as the next world champions. “Kids are the missing link,” said Siver. “This is an exciting moment for windsurfing. Youth is the engine of the sport. Windsurfing is reinventing itself and it is great to throw the groms in there too.” MTW

Four little bodies hanging onto small sails were bobbing around in the waves off Ho’okipa Beach. Suddenly the wave crested—one kid rode it left, turning skillfully in and out. Then another kid followed, doing tricks and spinning around masterfully. One more boy got help from his dad to take off from the beach—he immediately shot out into the sea. Another got snatched up by a rescuer on a jet ski after a wipeout. I was impressed as I watched these kids, aged 11 to 14, as they fearlessly sailed, jumped and rode waves. They handled themselves with youthful abandon and the poise of adult professionals. The kids were competing in this year’s Aloha Classic, the first tournament to include divisions for junior sailors and kids. The contest has traditionally been one of the sport’s most revered tournaments, attracting the top names in windsurfing from Hawaii, the mainland, and around the world. Most of the kids benefited from having active windsurfing parents, who encouraged their children to take on the sport as well. Maui Sports Unlimited (MSU), run by Linda Stott, also played a part in the development of youth windsurfing. In fact, many of the kids who competed this year came through Stott’s organization. MSU operates kids’ camps every summer from July to August. For $100 per week, local kids get training all morning. Stott says the kids often start at age six, but really excel from eight to 10. After the first day of sailing, I spoke with some of the kids about their involvement. Paulina Pease, 13, was the first girl to compete in the Aloha Classic. She more than held her own against the boys. “It is really fun and exciting,” she said. “It’s fun to be first and feels good to make history. I would love to compete professionally some day.” Kai Lenny, 12, was the winner and is the local star of his age group. “I got one kid in my class to start windsurfing and he’s stoked on it,” said the Montessori School 6th grader. “It feels good to be a leader and it’s good for newer kids because they want to try it out too.” Lenny seemed a humble young champion, respectful and well-spoken. “It feels really good to win,” he said. “I’m stoked. Competing makes you want to be perfect in all of your turns and makes you feel more committed. My goal is to be an all-around waterman and world champion.”

ALOHA STEVE COONEY 1974-2004 On Saturday, Nov. 13, hundreds of people gathered at Ho’okipa Beach Park to remember Steve Cooney—talented surfer, devoted son, and loyal friend—who died a couple weeks ago in a car crash. Cooney grew up in Kula with his parents and spent much of his childhood skateboarding with friends Shaun Hudson and Kua Harvey. He surfed all over Maui. He spent a lot of time on the West side surfing with Talvi, and loved to surf in Hana, but he was one of the boys at Ho’okipa. “Steve pushed everyone,” said his friend Tide Rivers. “Because no matter what you did, he would do something more extreme to top it.” In 1999, Cooney beat Christian Fletcher— one of the world’s top air contenders—in an air show at Ho’okipa. It was a highlight of his life to be “King of the Air” at his home break. He was also a standout at Honolua Bay. One day, in the winter of 1996, he was surfing during 10 to 15-foot conditions. Kelly Slater was out, too. Cooney charged that day—on wave after wave he took Slater out. Cooney never forgot that. Although he liked to travel to surf destinations and was stoked to surf in Tahiti, Costa Rica and North Shore Oahu, he real-

ly loved coming home to Maui. He was very close to his mother, who also lives here. In fact, he had “Mom” tattooed on his left arm. On more than one occasion he said she “was the only one” for him. When she was diagnosed with cancer, Cooney drove her to appointments and stayed with her at her house. He all but vanished from the surf scene to care for her. When Steve wasn’t competing at a contest, he was frequently heard announcing it. Steve had an amazingly funny, off-the-cuff style that usually got the crowd roaring. Since he knew everybody in the water, he’d bring up little quirky, sometimes embarrassing things about the contestants. But nobody ever seemed offended, mostly because Steve’s humor wasn’t offensive. Cooney lived his life large. He played hard and he worked hard. Even at Mama’s Fish House, where he worked for years, the rest of the staff on the floor and in the kitchen respected him as a hard worker. When he wasn’t working, he was surfing, cleaning up the beach, or partying with friends. He loved drinking Budweiser at the beach with Kekoa. He sometimes got in a little over his head, but it’s clear he was trying his best to live a good life. MTW

Mama Ding’s Puerto Rican comfort food Frank Jr. really takes his pasteles seriously. “It’s really a part of being Puerto Rican,” says the proprietor of Mama Ding’s Pasteles in Kahului. “It’s one of the most important recipes of the Puerto Rican culture. It’s very similar to a tamale in Puerto Rico—we use banana leaves, spices and various kinds of meat. We do everything the same here, but we skip the banana leaves. It’s too much work.”

255 Alamaha, Kahului, 877-5796. They keep unusual hours, which are generally 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., but call ahead just to make sure they’re open. $ On Nov. 19, Mama Ding’s celebrated its 20-year anniversary. “The local community, and the Puerto Rican community from all around the U.S. has been very good to us, very loyal,” Frank tells me. “You see, we are in guidebooks that we don’t even know about. Puerto Ricans come to us and tell us we are a little taste of home. Everything we make, we make from scratch. Our family owns a ranch. All the meat that goes into the pasteles comes from our cows. “So, you can see, the food that is served here is served with a kind of love,” he continues. “Making the pasteles is an
intimate experience. Sounds funny, but it’s true. You roll the dough, create the flavor, it becomes kind of like your own creation. Every family has a different flavor to their pasteles. Latin people have a close relationship with their food, their cooking.” Mama Ding’s is a visually busy place. Handpainted walls, Puerto Rican flags, flowers, walls lined with empty cans of tomato sauce, coffee and evaporated milk. An amateur map dominates one wall, with a dotted line connecting Puerto Rico to Maui. Mama Ding’s makes you comfortable, with a homey, wellworn feeling to it. Frank Jr. and his mother, Mama Ding started the restaurant in the courtyard of the family’s masonry company baseyard. It was an instant hit among the breakfast crowd and Frank became famous for his vast and innovative variety of breads. “We got coconut papaya pineapple bread, apple cinnamon, Puerto Rican sweet bread, others too,” says Frank Jr. Looking around the restaurant and its eclectic ethnic and cultural references, it becomes apparent that Mama Ding’s is, in fact, a microcosm of Maui. Guadalupe looking down on the pastele eaters, paintings and photographs of Puerto Rican themes, a flyer for the Miss Filipino contest. An elderly man catches my eye as he scuffles slowly to the back kitchen, wearing an apron, hands covered in flour. “That’s Frank Sr.,” says Frank Jr. “Even though he is retired, he still makes the pasteles.” MTW

Danielle Kierz Barista, LiveWire Cafe, Paia
When I was 12 I got a short board and taught myself how to surf. Ever since then it’s what I do. I’m dedicated and it’s the center of my life. When I’m not working or going to school, I’m at the beach—waves or no waves. Although when there’s no waves, I’m extremely bored. But that’s why working at LiveWire is really convenient. Because it’s in Paia, I can surf all day at Ho’okipa and then go to work. It’s the lifestyle of Maui. I love it. Lots of cool people come in and I work with fun people. The environment is very kick back. I’m taking art classes at Maui Community College—ceramics, oil painting, watercolor and acrylics. I don’t exactly want to be an artist. But no matter what I do in life, I know I want my art to be a part of it. When I paint I feel at peace. I feel really connected to what I painting, to everything I’m around. It’s kind of like surfing—when you’re out there you become a part of it, something bigger. The one thing I don’t think people can tell by looking at me is that I have a wild side. I’m a little crazy. Actually, I’ve been told before that you can tell. I’m trying to save enough money to move or go on a surf trip. Hopefully to Australia, my friend is there now and she’s having a lot of fun. So when I’m at work, that’s part of my focus, going somewhere. Every drink I make is a drink closer to my goal. My favorite drink at LiveWire is the passion fruit and orange juice blended with ice. It’s sweet and cools you off. The best tip I ever received wasn’t a cash tip at all. This guy sat in LiveWire all day and when we were closing he came up to me and said, “I don’t have money for a tip, so I wrote you a poem.” It read “Back from Hana/Where the water flows/And souls glow/Your warm smile in Paia/Keep it so.” It made my day. Thanksgiving Thursday, dinnertime at your home or a suitable facsimile thereof There’s nothing I can say about Thanksgiving that wasn’t said by Pamela Hyde Smith, the U.S. Ambassador to Moldova, on Nov. 28, 2002: “Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, is my favorite American holiday. It’s not a time for gift giving or fireworks. It’s quieter. And it is special. “Today, in my celebration of Thanksgiving, I will be thankful for being able to work in Moldova and sample the fine results of farmers’ hard work here. Moldovan agriculture has an important role in the continued development of this country. I am continually impressed with the efforts of the private farmers I have visited in Moldova. Private land ownership is a necessary and positive move, enabling the growth of agriculture in a market economy. Approximately one million people became landowners through privatization. “I believe U.S. Government programs can help enhance Moldovan farmers’ success. And I think our world is better, and will be better still in the future, thanks to the hard work of Moldovan farmers and the warm and productive relationship between our two countries. This Thanksgiving Day let us all remember the rich soils of this beautiful land and the hard work of the farmers, and be grateful.” [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Turkey Trot Thursday (today!), 7 & 8 a.m. at Rice Park, Kula [SPORTS] What better way to spend a Thanksgiving morning than running your ass off for 16 (7 a.m.) or 8.6 (8 a.m.) miles? Think of all the fresh air, burnt calories in advance of gluttony, and the camaraderie of competition… Maybe you just want to run around like the free-range turkey that you will be eating for dinner. Whatever the case may be, the Turkey Trot is a Kula tradition for Valley Isle runners beginning at Rice Park and appropriately benefits the Maui Food Bank. If you don’t feel like running on your day of feast, how about a donation to the food bank? Either way you lighten your load. Free for Valley Isle Members, $10 with food donation, $15 with no donation. Call 280-4643 for more info. [JEN RUSSO]
THURSDAY
Cheap Seats Marathon Thursday (today!), 7 a.m-7 p.m., ESPN Classic [SPORTS/TV] The best show on the sports network set up to rerun the best games and matches ever is the one that highlights the worst televised sports ever offered. Think of Cheap Seats as Mystery Science Theater 3000, but for the athletically inclined. Instead of skewering creaky, stale sci-fi movies about monsters and UFOs, hosts/brothers Randy and Jason Sklar take on old sporting events, much of it old footage used in ABC’s Wide World of Sports and ESPN 2. Highlighted events include a demolition derby, bowling, a junior high spelling bee, hockey, cliff diving, billiards and, in the show’s greatest episode, Steve Garvey’s 1990 “Celebrity” Billfishing Tournament that took place on our own Big Island of Hawaii. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
Beamer & Nakai Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Studio Theater, MACC [MUSIC] Keola Beamer is one of Hawai’i’s premier singer/songwriters, arrangers, composers, and slack key guitarists. He wrote the classic Honolulu City Lights, which is one of the absolute all-time best selling recordings in the history of Hawaiian Music. R. Carlos Nakai is the world’s premier Native American flutist with 27 albums and numerous Grammy nominations to his credit. He is intent on diversifying flute music and encouraging the appreciation of diversification, in general. “We were put on the earth to experience life in its totality,” says Nakai. “And if you’re not doing that, you’re essentially wasting your time.” Together, they’re... well, beautiful music.

Saturday-Sunday, Wednesday, 10 p.m. at Paradice Bluz [MUSIC] An attractive blonde woman singing the blues? Sure, that could work. Especially if that blonde has friends like Sam Ahia and Jason James playing guitar, Richard Hardy on sax and flute, Sal Godinez on piano, Marcus Johnson on bass and Greg Marsh on drums. Also if that particular chanteuse has an extensive playlist that includes “Peel Me a Grape.” You know that song? “Never out think me, just mink me/Polar bear rug me, don’t bug me/New Thunderbird me, you heard me/I’m getting hungry, peel me a grape.” Gosh, I love that one… Saturday is Jump Blues, Swing and Rockabilly Night, Sunday is straight-up Jazz Night and Wednesday is Chicago Blues.
DAY
Wednesday, 5 & 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [FILM] I saw this movie a month ago with a girl named Doris. She asked me to come to a movie, something about Janis Joplin or some shit, but got the weeks mixed up and we ended up seeing this. It is pretty crazy, about all these gnarly surfer dudes who ride huge waves. It was edited by the same guy who did Dogtown and Z-Boys and it retains the style which made that movie such a hit; lots of voice overs, vintage footage and music. It is lots of fun, but they spend too much time slowing slow-mo footage of Laird Hamilton’s body. It reminds me of that one D’Angelo video. Be there or be square. [BARUKH SHALEV]

A Kooky Play About Love Neil Simon’s Barefoot In The Park In Barefoot in the Park, the young newlywed couple Corie and Brian are fresh off their six-day honeymoon spent at the Park Plaza Hotel. They are just jumping into married life in their tiny, unfurnished New York City brownstone with a never-ending staircase and a hole in the ceiling when winter arrives. At the new Maui OnStage production directed by Lisa Teichner, we watch Corie (Ginger Lowcher) play the impulsive, perfectionist female while her conservative lawyer husband Paul (Nick Vaky) tries to be level-headed about every aspect of life— even while foolishly drunk. From the moment Corie bursts onto the dimly lit stage clad in a yellow trench coat with her wild brunette curls bouncing around, the crowd is smiling. There is something amusing about the idealistic way she tries to make her less-than-perfect living situation appear tremendous to her refined and ever-present mother. Add an eccentric, bohemian neighbor (Victor Velasco), who has to climb through their bedroom window just to get to his apartment in the attic, and you’ve got Neil Simon in a nutshell. An exasperated Velasco, played by seasoned actor Brian Connolly, often unexpectedly enters the stage wearing a kimono or sleek white pants suit. He is charming yet cocky in his attempts to seduce whichever lady happens to be in his presence. When it opened in 1963, Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park was an instant classic. After briefly working with Simon on The Dinner Party, Teichner realized his incredible talent. “I’ve always respected him as a writer because he created this brilliant formula,” said Teichner. “Each character’s arch is very clear, so it’s great material to work with. He’s really a genius in terms of comedy style.” It’s Simon’s ability to create the real life, comical interaction between individuals that makes the plot so strong. “This play is different for me because this is really kooky,” said Connolly, sitting on the stage after the performance. “I like to do serious edgy stuff. But what’s fun about the stage is getting a reaction from people and really feeling that emotion. I like either scaring the shit out of people or making them laugh really hard. The good thing about this is that it makes people laugh and people need to laugh right now.”

As a young actor—both Lowcher and Vaky are Baldwin High students—Nicholas Vaky reveals the eager innocence of his age at times. When Corie prances around the living room wearing only a black, see-through lace cami, Paul reacts nervously. Teichner focused on the actors’ relational process before ever working on the text. “By the time they picked up their lines, they felt much more comfortable with each other,” she said. “We did a lot of ensemble work so they’d have a relationship already.” Ethel Banks, played by Lina Krueger-Miller, does a fine job playing Corie’s dignified and

Swords, Sandals and Eyeliner Oliver Stone loses Alexander’s story
IN YOUR HEART YOU KNOW SHE’S RIGHT
You know from an early scene of tiresome exposition by Anthony Hopkins that Oliver Stone’s three-hour sword-and-sandal epic is doomed when a giant scar across the right side Hopkins’ forehead mysteriously moves to the left side of his head between shots. Then comes Colin Farrell’s Irish accent that wrestles against Angelina Jolie’s faux Russian intonation like a cat and a monkey fighting in a burlap bag.

FILM
For all of its attention to detail in two reasonably good battle scenes Stone’s movie fails to tell the complex story of one of the most enigmatic conquerors in history. But more than that Stone doesn’t present characters that the audience can believe in, even for one moment, as representative of their historic roles. There’s an undue controversy surrounding Oliver Stone’s pre-Christian depiction of Alexander as a bisexual lover that may give the movie mileage with gay audiences who are likely to be disappointed at the soft-peddled relationship between Alexander (Farrell) and his lifelong friend Hephaistion (Jared Leto— Panic Room). Apart from both characters wearing matching eyeliner throughout the movie, and sharing hushed conversations and hugs, there isn’t enough subtext to hang a horseshoe on. Hephaistion is Alexander’s effeminate battle commander whose existence seems to revolve around him being mistreated. We hear Hephaistion and Alexander profess their love for one another but never see the price of their relationship because they never test one another. To his credit Jared Leto gives the most convincing performance in the film as the wide-eyed paramour. Alexander opens with a clumsy homage to Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane wherein Alexander’s dying hand drops a ring onto the floor in 323 B.C. The clunky backward gazing device is sunk deeper by a segue to 40-years later when Alexander’s now-aged military general Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins) dictates his version of Alexander’s life to a Greek scholar who busily fills endless scrolls in a palatial library. Angelina Jolie enjoys some early scene chewing with live snakes (she’s seldom shown during the movie without them) as Alexander’s domineering mother Olympias. Alexander’s battle scarred father King Philip (Val Kilmer) soon appears in her bedroom and attempts to violently
extract sexual satisfaction even as young Alexander watches from their same bed. Our crash course in Alexander’s childhood shifts from oedipal mother worship to homosexual and racist teachings by Aristotle (Christopher Plummer) and onto coveting his father’s throne. Connor Paolo gives a confident performance as the young Alexander and shares a remarkable likeness to Collin Farrell that temporarily tips the scales toward some suspension of disbelief. Alexander the Great won more than 70 battles during his dozen-year reign, but Stone dramatizes just two engagements that are meant to show how Alexander and his armies conquered millions of square miles of foreign territory. The first at Gaugamela is a 12-minute war sequence that attempts to exhibit the cleverness of Alexander’s military strategy while giving the viewer a taste of the brutality involved in the warfare. However, the painstaking sequence lacks an adequate narrative structure to
acquaint the audience with its characters. A heavy-handed musical score by Vangelis (Blade Runner) hobbles Alexander with bombastic surges of sonic information that call undesired attention and further remove the audience from the movie. There isn’t a single scene in the film that is improved by the Vangelis’ music. The old commander Ptolemy pedantically says of Alexander, “No tyrant ever gave back so much.” It’s a troubling notion for a leftist filmmaker like to Oliver Stone to endorse. As Ptolemy preached on and on during the movie about Alexander’s place in history, I wondered at Oliver Stone’s little seen documentary about Fidel Castro for which he interviewed the Cuban dictator. Alexander comes at a time when America is poised as fear-ridden empire that is overreaching its boundaries while neglecting domestic issues. To regard Alexander as a man who achieved amazing military success is not necessarily to view him as a hero. Perhaps Alexander’s bi-sexuality is an escape clause that Oliver Stone planted in the film to distance right-wing audiences from associating too freely with the warrior. Either way, the truth is never what it’s cracked up to be. It’s just too bad that American cinema hasn’t improved on the sword-and-sandal epic in the past 40 years. MTW

New This Week ALEXANDER – (R) – Action/Adventure – Oliver Stone’s big war epic, this stars Colin Farrell as the world’s most famous conqueror and Angelina Jolie as his equally ambitious mother. What can be said—the guy took over the known world by the time he was 32. Not much to it really, except possibly that he, you know, really enjoyed the company of men. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but he did call his soldiers “Companions.” I’m just saying. Also stars Val Kilmer and Anthony Hopkins. CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS – (PG) – Comedy – Imagine a year without Christmas. That's just what Luther (Tim Allen) and Nora Krank ( Jamie Lee Curtis) have in mind when they decide that they'll skip the holiday altogether, despite the fact that they're usually the most fanatical about it. So for something different this year. they decided to join their daughter (Julie Gonzallo)—who’s away in the tropics—as a surprise. But when their daughter surprises them by cutting her trip short and returning home for Christmas, there's a mad scramble to prepare themselves to have the traditional Christmas fanfare on extremely short notice. No tree, no decorations or gifts. Bah Humbug!!!
Now Showing AFTER THE SUNSET – (PG13) - Crime, Romance – Pierce Brosnan plays—what else—a master thief who’s pulled his last score and retired to an island paradise. But wait! There’s still one last jewel he hasn’t yet swiped! But then his FBI agent nemesis shows up to make sure he’s out of the stealing business! It all sounds like your standard heist picture routine, but Salma Hayek’s in it, so that makes it a must-see. BRIDGET JONES: EDGE OF REASON – (R) – Romantic Comedy – A continuation in following the neurotic trials and insecure tribulations of kinda plump and totally British Bridget (Renée Zellweger) as she thinks and talks to death her perfect relationship with stable Mark (Colin Firth) and her questionable, ego-conqest relationship with former smarmy boss, Daniel (Hugh Grant, who else?). THE GRUDGE – (PG13) – Horror – You know how your mama told you never to hold a grudge? Well, this little horror flick sets out to prove that point further as Sarah Michelle Gellar finds herself in a cycle of unresolved fury and a curse born of someone who... dunh duh!... held a grudge THE INCREDIBLES – (PG) – The Incredibles' follows the adventures of a family of former superheroes rediscovering the true source of their powers - in one another. Once one of the world's top masked crimefighters, Bob Parr (AKA Mr. Incredible) fought evil and saved lives on a daily basis. But fifteen years later, he and his wife Helen (a famous former superhero in her own right) have been forced to take on civilian identities and retreat to the suburbs. Voices by Craig T Nelson, Samuel Jackson, Holly Hunter.

Weeeeeeeeeee! NATIONAL TREASURE – (PG) – Action/Adventure – Nicholas Cage and Diane Kruger star in this quest to find some incredible treasure hidden by our nation’s founding fathers, who were nice enough to plant clues on the back of $1 bills. Sean Bean, as usual, plays a “ruthless adversary” in their search to unlock the secret to what the movie calls a 2,000-year-old mystery. Sounds great—wait, 2,000? Um, isn’t the country just—wait, let me get my calculator—228 years old? So it’s a 228-year-old mystery, right? Well, that doesn’t sound like such a big deal. THE POLAR EXPRESS – (G) – Family, Animated – A boy struggles to believe in Santa Claus as all his friends and schoolyard chums make fun of him for being so gullible. Stupid chums. But then a giant steam train pulls up to his house to take him to the North Pole. Oh my God, it’s a ghost train! Run and hide! Oh wait, it’s just the 5:15 in from Baltimore. Late as usual… RAY – (PG13) – Musical Drama – The story of Ray Charles, blind from age seven, who famously merged Gospel, jazz and rhythm and blues music, all while fighting drug addiction and Southern segregation, eventually becoming one of the greatest American pianists of the 20th century. Stars Jamie Foxx and Regina King.

THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE – (PG) – Family/Animation – The inevitable movie version of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon of the same name, this ostensible kids’ movie about a talking sponge and his starfish buddy who work in a hamburger joint has a surprising amount of thinly-veiled homoerotic humor. They call their world Bikini Bottom, people! Do I have to spell it out for you? Also stars David Hasselhoff as himself. SURVIVING CHRISTMAS – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – Ben Affleck plays a rich record company exec who gets dumped by his girlfriend. Moping around and fearful of spending Christmas alone, he decides—for reasons that aren’t entirely clear—to go back to the home he grew up in and spend Christmas with the strangers who live there. Because this is a comedy, they turn out to be nuts. Also stars Christina Applegate and that dude who plays Tony Soprano.

If not now, when?
I heard that, following the presidential election, hits on immigration websites (especially those for Canada, Australia and New Zealand) increased exponentially. Sites offering (foreign-citizenship-conferring) marriage to Americans sprang up all over the place, as sympathizers outside of the states offered to help the disillusioned disenfranchised escape their divided nation. Recent personal decisions you’ve made have parts of yourself running for the borders, or simply jumping ship. It’s hard being so torn, and understandable that even though you feel like you made the right decision, you can’t help simultaneously cringing about its potential consequences. Sadly, right or wrong, this one can’t be undone. Forgo regret. It’s time to marshal your resources and just make the best of it.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Capricorns evidently possess an extra sense that most other people lack—ethical vision. It doesn’t seem like much of a superpower, though; it actually resembles a handicap more than a boon, as it seems to occasionally keep you from doing things that your friends do without a second thought, like downloading pirated music, or grazing the produce section at the grocery store. Fortunately or unfortunately, you’re likely to encounter your own personal kryptonite this week, freeing you from the burden of always seeing such stark rights and wrongs. However, I hope you don’t take up shoplifting or insurance fraud just because you can’t see a victim. In these cases, there may be no obvious victim, but there still is one—you, or at least your long-term self-respect.

SERVICES
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) This week you may be presented with a gift that’s the equivalent of 17 stunning white ponies. There’s no denying the generosity of such a gesture, but there’s also no avoiding the fact that you simply can’t afford to accept it. Where would you keep these beautiful beasts? In your apartment? How could you feed them, or care for them? You can’t consistently keep your houseplants alive, let alone several tons of magnificent horseflesh. No matter how shell-shocked you are, don’t be stupid enough to say yes. This offer is more than you can handle, and you know it. Do the right thing and say: “Thanks, but no thanks.”
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Snow is sensual, aesthetically beautiful, pure, even luxurious in some ways. You can see why some people despise it, but most Taureans love the stuff—even the hard labor and disruption of routine it precipitates doesn’t bother you like those lazy, heat-seeking Leos, for example. So I’m confused why the person who’s recently entered your life has gotten such a bad review from you. Try to think of him or her as snow; the description certainly applies, as s/he’s beautiful, limited, inconvenient, disruptive, messy, and ultimately exactly as good or bad as the weather—in other words, it all depends on your perception.
808.661-0446
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) The Moon waxes full in your sign this week, making emotions—especially those directed towards you—bigger than you’re generally comfortable. Tough shit. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s just bewildering. Embrace it, if you can, rather than resisting it. Think of this as your chance to channel and express all the melodrama and pathos of a chick flick or ancient Greek tragedy, without anyone batting an eyelash, as it will all seem to be perfectly appropriate, even called-for. That’s right, you get to be a drama queen without earning the label. Most people would jump at the chance. Can’t you at least give it an enthusiastic try? Sobbing, screaming, ranting and raving can actually be quite fun, satisfying activities. You’ll see.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You’re in for a refreshing break, a long stretch of calm internal oceans, with a strong, steady wind at your back. In other words, a quiet, low-key period in which you can make a surprising amount of forward progress, without the struggle that usually entails. The only danger lies in the possibility that you might screw yourself by overcomplicating things, by suddenly adding more to your plate. Stick with the original plan and it should all go swimmingly. Modify it now and you could get stuck in a Bermuda Triangle of your own ambitions, and might even sink the entire ship.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Some people just have really bland palates. They can’t tolerate food that’s the least bit exotic or spicy. They’re into familiar meat and potatoes and bread; anything that diverges too far from that well-trod territory might as well be poison. Face it, Leo. You are spicy food. You’re a little exotic. Therefore, you’re not for everyone, or just anyone. So quit trying to ram yourself down the throats of those who wrinkle their noses at non-processed cheese; you’re simply too much for them. You may be convinced, like a well-meaning parent, that you’d be good for them, that they might even love you, if they could just be compelled to take a taste. But that’s not your call. Let them know you’re on the table and available for sampling. Then leave them alone.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
#126A-7278
Virgos love deadlines, secretly. They work for you, whether you admit it or not. Without them you’re a little lost—so much so that you often make arbitrary ones for yourself, even for tasks that aren’t especially time-sensitive. Nevertheless, external cut-off dates always work better than imaginary ones, so here’s one from the planets: Get your five most important short-term goals done before the 29th, when Mercury goes retrograde and starts to mess with you, big time. Not sure what your top five immediate objectives are? Well, you have your work cut out for you then, don’t you?
Lahaina, HI 96761
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Your fantasy world is about to intersect your real life. Sadly, I don’t mean that Jennifer Aniston or Brad Pitt plans on visiting your bedroom this evening. Actually, it’s a bit more negative than that, as whoever you’re in bed with is likely to uncover one of your deepest darkest sexual or romantic secrets. This could lead to some seriously tense moments and profound embarrassment for both of you. But if you stay calm, own your (ultimately minor) perversions, and work it out, you could get what you’d never before imagined—actually living out your desires, instead of just imagining them.

TO ADVERTISE
Help people unlearn their fear. Fear’s got a tight grip on the world. It’s used to steer people, like cattle, all the time—it got Bush re-elected, for example. You can help cure this epidemic of taught terror, because many Pisceans are curiously immune to it. You’re afraid of things, yes, but they’re almost never the things you’re instructed or encouraged (by parents, politicians, or the nightly news) to fear. Help those around you see how much harm and how little good their carefully-inculcated anxiety is causing. It’s hard to become fearless—maybe even too hard, for now—but I think it’s possible to learn (and teach) the distinction between real and present dangers and unlikely, conjectural ones.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING House/ Condo Cleaning Now Available. Excellent References. 2053469. Marsha
When you were a kid, you were an expert at playing your parents off each other. Mom would say one thing, Dad another, and with a couple of strategic maneuvers on your part, you’d soon fly beneath the radar while they argued. You have a similar opportunity now—only Ma and Pa have been replaced by more current figures of authority. You could easily take advantage of the conflict that’s brewing between them, and reap great personal reward (if you don’t care about the tricky moral issues of this kind of opportunism). Or you could stay out of it completely. Your choice. I wouldn’t exercise option three—coming between them—you’d simply be crushed.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re an entire rhumba of rattlesnakes this week. With both Venus and Mars—the two sexiest planets—on your side this week, you’re more than just one lethal creature; you’re a whole horde of them. This is not a strike against you by any means—being more dangerous only makes you more attractive. Advertise it. You’ll see. You’re a quiver of cobras, a shiver of sharks. Wear a sign, make bold declarations. People will run. Some of them will flee (from your cocky arrogance as much as any danger). But most of them will be sprinting towards you, not away.

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
Amazing Gospel, Literary Expressionism and Purple Hooters A couple Wednesdays ago, I was hanging around the Sugar Shack feeling restless. So I headed down to Kihei and arbitrarily picked the Sports Page as my initial stop. It seemed like a great place where I could just sit anonymously. As luck would have it, my old—she’s not really “old” but I’ve known her a long time—San Francisco bartender friend/hot mama Kat was tending bar. My former Four Seasons Wailea boss/devil incarnate Misha was cocktailing. And my old pals John and Elan were wow-ing the crowd with a casual set of their mellow college rock. More former Four Seasons co-workers stopped by and said hello, as I talked with Elan between sets about literary expressionism versus political anonymity—a subject best discussed over Purple Hooters and a couple of pints. Then I started talking with another friend of mine, Steve, who used to be really wild and crazy but was now waxing poetic about the Power of Love and How It’s Transformed Him and how He’s A Better Man For It and all that crap. It was really quite sweet. The following Saturday, Kim and I were struck with another restless bug. So we went up to Ka’anapali to cruise the promenade in search of a different place to swill. Not really satisfied with the somewhat pretentious vibe there—and let’s face it, the lack of a quality Happy Hour—we headed up to Nachos Grande in Honokowai. As soon as we walked in we knew were in the right place. Some old Shaggy song Kim liked was playing, 12 good-natured people yelled “goodbye Joe!” to some guy walking out and regular bar patron “Monty” escorted us to a table and took our drink order. But all good things must come to an end. And that happened when shots of Jagermeister—Satan’s juice!—appeared in front of us and Shaggy was replaced with a Dwight Yoakam song someone decided to play repeatedly. The next night, Kim and I went to a breathtaking Harlem Gospel Choir concert at the MACC’s Castle Theater. When I was younger, my auntie Yolanda used to take me to the gospel churches in Los Angeles. I didn’t really understand it at the time but I used to trip out on all the big ladies in formal dresses who would fall to the floor on their knees, looking enraptured and “speaking in tongues.” Everybody was called “Brother” or “Sister” so-and-so and they kissed and hugged a lot. Being an only child from a single-parent household, I really looked forward to those Sundays. Naturally, the Harlem Gospel Choir was amazing and spiritually uplifting. The best part was seeing everybody in the sold-out venue rise up and join the choir in joyous celebration. I know it sounds corny, but it was truly beautiful. Kim cried and my hands hurt from clapping—always a sign of a good night. The next weekend, Sasha and I had big plans. On Friday, we had dinner and male strippers at Casanova in Makawao. On Saturday, we met TBB at the SandBar in Paia for totally necessary Mind Erasers. Then we all went to the Taste of the North Shore and gorged ourselves on new SandBar chef Mat’s seared ahi rolls and Korean chicken, PYCC Café’s pork egg rolls, Mana Foods’ Pad Thai, Cakewalk cookies and Anthony’s brownies. After TBB bailed, Sasha and I decided to pull the car—now deemed Montclair Lounge—up to the curb in front of the SandBar. There, while reclined in private auto-luxury, we could watch the Vince Esquire Band and their league of fans through the windows. Every once in a while, passersby would ask if we needed anything— water, smokes, brown paper bag concoctions, papaya bong tokes. Of course, we declined politely on all counts. We chose instead to spy and loiter, looking like guilty school kids and giggling for no reason inside an unmarked car parked outside of a crowded bar on a Saturday night. We thought we were really funny. The next day, we went to a Jazz Brunch at the Blue Tile House in Kuau. Because of the rain, it started a bit later than “Brunch” so it was actually more like “Linner.” We drank mimosas and enjoyed Mark Johnston and his jazz comrades in a room that looked like an indoor swimming pool. But anyway, the house was awesome. There was an Upstairs Suite with a spiral staircase that Elan, Sasha and I imagined making sweeping, grand entrances into the living room on, with draping scarves and smoking cloves while laughing haughtily… Then downstairs, there was this 1970s-style hot tub that just screamed gold chains and spritzer, Spring Break at Cabo and funky porn music. Hmm… champagne-inspired scenarios of smut and squalor? Also, another sign of a good night. MTW
