Media for Hire! At a time when it seems that every third word that leaves President George W. Bush’s mouth is “freedom,” the federal government has been undergoing increasing scrutiny for what seems to be crude propaganda efforts. For insight into this disturbing practice, I spoke with the always gracious Harvey Nozack of the Seattle-based Foundation for Excellence in Media Affairs, Licensing and Education (FEMALE). MAUI TIME: So tell me, Mr. Nozack, what bothers you the most about this scandal of government involving itself more and more with public relations. NOZACK: Oh, probably the fact that newspapers are making such a big deal about it. Reading some of the stories, you’d think someone had broken the law. Um, actually, laws were broken. The Office of National Drug Control Policy’s infamous video news releases telling people not to use drugs was deemed by the General Accounting Office to be in violation of federal appropriations laws. Look, I’m not

here to debate arcane legal technicalities. From a strictly media standpoint, I just don’t see anything wrong with this “scandal.” Isn’t America still a “free country?” Are you serious? Newspaper and TV commentators were paid tens of thousands of dollars to promote Bush Administration policies. How you can use the word “free…” Okay, I see the problem here. The issue, then, is one of semantics. No, it’s not semantics! Was it semantics when the U.S. Forest Service hired—at taxpayer expense, mind you—a public relations firm to produce brochures saying that increased logging would actually be good for the forest? How about when the IRS sent out press releases filled with anti-tax messages lifted verbatim from the Republican National Committee? That’s my point precisely! American media is free, full of all sorts of issues and points of view. Are you saying that people who work at the IRS don’t have freedom of speech? No, I’m—look, if I didn’t know better, I’d say that the government was paying you to say all this. [15 seconds of silence] Mr. Nozack? Hmmm? Mr. Nozack, is the federal government paying you to promote this nonsense? There are actually many schools of thought on that particular idea. I’ve got a book here in my office that might shed some light on that— [click] Hello? Mr. Nozack? Well, I’ve been speaking to Harvey Nozack of the Foundation for Excellence in Media, Licensing and Education. Next week he will discuss his new book American Values: Why they need to make more Lethal Weapon movies. MTW

Yesterday I went for a jog with my leashed dog just like I do several times a week. During my 30-minute loop, I was charged by five different dogs at four different residences. One little yipper charged out from his tiny doghouse right next to the sidewalk. Once two dogs jumped over an eight-foot rock wall and charged my leashed dog and me. Now, I am a dog lover and know that all you owners love them, too. But don’t you think that your dogs are capable of doing damage if not properly supervised? Dogs always act differently when their owners are not nearby. Last time I checked there was a leash law in Hawaii. Since I do not have a fenced yard, I built a run for my dog in the back of the house and I leash her whenever I walk. Why is it so hard for you guys to take responsibility for your pets? Maybe dogs are just too much for you to handle. Try something smaller, like a hamster.

How to (Mostly) Beat an Over-Serving Rap
Opening Health Department inspection reports to all In a marked contrast to the secrecy paranoia that plagues the federal government, the state legislature has begun to pry open that vault of secrets otherwise known as the Department of Health. Specifically, legislators have introduced SB1179, which carries the not-quite poetic title of “A Bill for an Act Relating to Health.” The bill asks the department to make it far easier for the public to look at restaurant inspection and violation reports. Introduced by State Senator Les Ihara, Jr. (D, 9th District) on Jan. 26,
Calling Carlyle
The state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is on the verge of granting immensely powerful global equity fund The Carlyle Group its bid to buy Verizon Hawaii and rename it Hawaiian Telcom. Like a six-year-old the night before Christmas, the infamous “War on Terror” profiteer and employer of ex-presidents and prime ministers is giddy with anticipation. For instance, last Monday Carlyle announced that Honolulu attorney Alan Oshima is to be Hawaiian Telcom’s new senior vice president and general counsel. Oshima’s certainly qualified— for the last year he’s been Carlyle’s legal point man on the proposed deal. In fact, he was the guy who tried—unsuccessfully, as it turned out—to convince the PUC that holding public hearings on the $1.65 billion merger was a bad idea. “As counsel for The Carlyle Group, we respectfully request that the Commission continue its policy of not holding public hearings in acquisition transaction dockets, recognizing that neither the statutes involved nor Commission rules and regulations require such hearings,” Oshima wrote the PUC on July 13, 2004. Given the meager turnout at the Maui public hearing last October, it’s a wonder Oshima seemed so opposed to having members of the public—future rate-payers, really—have their say. -Anthony Pignataro

the bill is an elegantly simple two pages long. It requires the Department of Health to post reports on its website detailing any violations found in restaurants or establishments inspected over the previous month. In addition, the law would require restaurants to turn over its latest inspection reports to customers upon request. “A food establishment is more likely to correct deficiencies and violations found during inspections, and correct them faster, if information regarding the deficiencies and violations is readily available to the public,” reads the SB1179 text. “The legislature further finds that making inspection reports available for customer review will
increase food safety because consumers can make informed choices regarding the food establishments they patronize.” On Feb. 7, the state Senate Health Committee began hearing testimony on SB1179 (a companion bill, HB967, comes up for discussion in the House on Feb. 10). A handful of people—mostly restaurant owners—spoke about how the bill would cause “hysterical situations” even though New York City publishes its inspection reports online and still manages to maintain an extremely healthy visitor industry. A representative from the Department of Health said the department would support the bill if the Senate passed a few minor amendments allowing the hiring of more personnel and adding some kind of grading system to show how the violations differ in severity. No one at the hearing spoke in favor of giving the public easier access to violation information, but statistical information Ihara provided to the Health Committee makes a strong case. In 2004, Department of Health sanitarians took a look at more than half of the 6,937 restaurants and food establishments across the state. In an amazing 11,903 inspections, sanitarians found 13,043 violations. Typical violations included inaccurate thermometers, cooked items contaminated by juices from raw foods, improperly labeled toxic chemicals, improper utensil sanitization and “use of tobacco, eating or drinking” in food preparation areas. Maui averaged not quite two violations per inspected restaurant. In real terms that’s pret-

ty awful, but other counties throughout the state did far worse. Honolulu tipped the scales at 6.1 violations and Kauai posted an abysmal 8.9 violations per restaurant. Even when considering only critical or “red” violations, Maui averaged 0.9 violations per restaurant, while Honolulu racked up 2.4 and Kauai 3.8.
“I believe that the number of restaurant inspection violations is sufficiently large to warrant increased public access to these reports,” Ihara wrote to the Health Committee, “preferably via the internet since driving to Department of Health offices is inconvenient for most people.” Actually, driving to the Department is the easiest part of the general public’s quest to check public records to see if their favorite restaurants are clean. First, they have to fill out the standard OIP-1 “Request to Access a Government Record” form. Once completed, he or she then hands it in to the Department of Health’s local office, where the Sanitarian will conduct a search for the records. This search isn’t cheap. The office will charge $2.50 for every 15 minutes spent hunting for the relevant documents, then another $2.50 for every 15 minutes spent reviewing it. Local governments will waive the first $30 in search fees, but anything beyond has to come out of the concerned citizen’s pocket. The media can get up to $60 in search fees waived—like we do when requesting the documents that make up our Food Cops feature— but there’s no recourse for regular citizens.

LC Watch
THE GRID
CLASSIFIEDS
One of the most notorious violations handed out by the Maui County Department of Liquor Control is over-serving. That’s right, old Section 08-101-60(b)(1)(B) of the Rules of the Liquor Commission—selling, serving or furnishing liquor to a customer “who was at the time under the influence of liquor.” In other words, the department believes that all servers can and must keep a careful eye on their customers and, if necessary, cut them off before they become legally intoxicated. These charges usually stem from drunk driving cases in which the bar is unlucky enough to have served a guy who likes to talk. First the drunk gets pulled over, then tells the cops he was just knocking back a couple at his favorite tavern that he names, which allows the LC to move in and grill the barkeep. It’s a tough rap to beat, but during the Feb. 3 Board of Adjudication hearing Stopwatch Sports Bar and Grill of Makawao managed to escape one count of over-serving with a mere $2,000 fine. Considering that the bar could have faced a license suspension or worse, it was a relatively clean getaway. It did take a year and a half to pull off. The over-serving allegation occurred way back on Oct. 28, 2003. The LC reports say a customer named Dawn Marie Reiter became irate after consuming one beer there, then got thrown out after trying to drink another customer’s beer. She then left Stopwatch and drove to Lahaina—not an easy task even when sober— where she was pulled over. She told the cops where she’d come from, and not long after Stopwatch found itself up on three counts of over-serving. But the bar did a smart thing. They first pled not guilty. Then they got an attorney who was also representing Reiter, forcing him into a time-consuming conflict of interest determination. Months dragged on, then the bar got a new attorney. Soon a plea agreement was on the table: change your plea to no contest and the LC would drop the “fail to exercise due care” and “knowingly permit” charges, leaving just the first actual over-serving count. Which was fine by Stopwatch— especially considering that their two previous over-serving convictions were nearly 10 years ago, meaning the Board couldn’t consider them when sentencing. Luck, it seems, makes all the difference in the world. MTW

MAUICOUNTY You know, if it weren’t for all the secrecy, arrogance, lack of research and bribes, I think I might actually grow to like giant agrochemical firm Monsanto and it’s Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Yes, I really think that—wait, did I just write “bribes?” Yeah, I did, probably because anti-GMO activist Eloise Engman just sent me an email quoting a news article from last month saying that the big biotech firm—which is growing them little GMO things on Maui, among other locales around the world— had just agreed to pay $1.5 million in fines for its 2002 attempt to give a $50,000 bribe to a senior Indonesian environmental official. In addition, the article Engman located says Monsanto went a bit further. “In a separate civil action taken by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Monsanto also admitted that it had paid over $700,000 in bribes to various officials in Indonesia between 1997 and 2002, financed through improper accounting of its pesticide sales in Indonesia,” wrote Jonathan Birchall on Jan. 6 in The Financial Times. Now keep in mind that $1.5 million fines may sound like a lot of dough, but Monsanto did more than $5 billion in sales in 2004. Or put another way, the $1.5 million fine equals just 0.6 percent of Monsanto’s $267 million profit that same year. In fact, the fine is so small it even pales before the company’s $23 million net loss in 2003.
THURSDAY, FEB. 3 Well, Republican President George W. Bush gave his annual State of the Union Address last night, and contrary to my
expectations, Republican Governor Linda Lingle loved it! She especially loved the part where that Iraqi woman hugged the mother of a dead American marine. “[T]hat simple act reinforced President Bush’s message that ‘the force of human freedom will stop terrorism,’” she said in a press release. Really? So that’s “freedom” coming out of the rifles of our soldiers and marines in Iraq? But Lingle was dead on when she says that Bush’s speech was “comprehensive.” Was it ever! Sometimes he said that Social Security would never go away, other times he said it was doomed. Sometimes he was bipartisan, other times he blamed the Democrats for everything. He advocated both tight budget restraints and special interest payouts. About the only thing he was clear about was that we ain’t leaving Iraq anytime soon. And who wouldn’t agree with that?… Oh, and speaking of freedom and freedom-loving Americans, the U.S. Senate just confirmed noted pro-torture scholar and former White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to be the next U.S. Attorney General. Thanks a lot Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye! All I asked of you guys (“Justice for None,” Nov. 18) was an eensy weensy little filibuster to keep that clown out of the Justice Department. I really appreciate all your hard work.
It’s been a tumultuous journey for all of us, but finally, at long last, we’ve come to the end. That’s right, the good people who live on Lanai, Molokai and in East Maui finally have a new state legislator. Somehow, amidst all the eligibility panels and selection processes, Governor Lingle managed to name a replacement for outgoing state Representative Sol Kaho’ohalahala (D, 13th District). And the winner is… Maui mayoral aide Mele Carroll. If the name sounds familiar, it’s

COCONUT WIRELESS because Kaho’ohalahala offered her name way back on Dec. 30, 2004 as his preferred successor. But hey—what good would it have done Lingle back then to just go along with Kaho’ohalahala’s wishes? Why help out the Democrats who control both the state house and senate?… Speaking of helping out, our own U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, Hawaii) just got himself a plum seat on the House Budget Committee. Now this is a huge victory for Hawaii because—oh wait, I just remembered that Case is a Democrat. Yeah, this means squat for us. That’s because the Grand Old Party has interpreted its “majority” in the House as meaning, “we get everything we want and the lousy, traitorous Democrats have no say whatsoever.” Since 1994, House Democrats have gotten something on the order of zero stuff passed. Yeah, we’re still screwed as ever.

SUNDAY, FEB. 6 Not now, the Super Bowl’s on.
MONDAY, FEB. 7 The median home price on Maui has spiked again to $612,000, which is up from $520,ooo a year ago, according to today’s Pacific Business News. What’s most amazing is that the median price on Oahu is a scant $500,000. What paupers… Speaking of robbery, deaths caused by pirates were up in 2004. No, really. Pirates—Yo, ho, ho and all that sort of thing. They’re an increasing problem in Southeast Asia and along the African coast. There were 325 pirate attacks in 2004, which is a lot, but actually not as much as 2003, when there were 445 attacks. Now even though we’ve had a decrease in attacks, it’s clear that the scurvy dogs are getting more efficient, having killed 30 people in 2004—a third more than the previous year. We know all this because of the Malaysia-based International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Center, which just released the new statistics. But there is good news, matey! According to the BBC, the Pirating Center believes that the recent Southeast Asian tsunami wiped out many pirates and destroyed their boats.
TUESDAY, FEB. 8 Looks like traffic surveillance cameras are coming back to Hawaii. Yay! Oh wait, this is creepy. Two bills aimed at catching speeders are rolling through the capitol halls, according to the Associated Press. Just like on the mainland, these cameras are tied to radar guns and would photograph the license plates of speeding cars. Then a couple weeks later, the owner of the car would get a ticket in the mail. And the best part is that our own state Representative Joe Souki (D, 8th District)— who chairs the House Transportation Committee—is co-sponsoring the bills. Anthony Pignataro is an award-winning actor who last appeared as King’s Groom #2 in the Broadway version of Macbeth. MTW
NEWSOFTHEWEIRD COLLEGE DAZE Harvard University this year hired a recent graduate as a full-time promoter and coordinator of social activities, apparently because so many at the school are too busy to relax. According to Associate Dean Judith Kidd, “[T]he kids work very, very hard here. And they worked very, very hard... to get here. They arrived needing help having fun.” By contrast, two weeks later, a police raid in Durham, N.C., turned up 200 noisy Duke University students, many of them bikiniclad women, wrestling in a plastic pool of baby oil in the basement of a fraternity house, apparently inspired by a scene from the movie Old School.
ALCOHOL BLUES Among recent troubling news: After Rafer Wilson crashed into a parked car in Sydney, Australia, his blood-alcohol content—according to evidence at his trial in December—was tested at an almost deathdefying .462, nine times the legal presumption of impairment. Three weeks later, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, doctors said a 67-year-old man had produced a bloodalcohol reading of .914, which supposedly stood up through four re-tests, and have stuck with the story despite worldwide alarm. And Gary W. Rodgers was arrested in November in Lexington, Ky., and according to the county’s offender database, it was his 96th arrest for public drunkenness in 2004.

After five years of the New Mexico government always accepting Viola Trevino’s child support claims against Steve Barreras—over the vasectomied Barreras’ objections—a court in Albuquerque finally ruled in December that the child never existed. The judge concluded that Trevino had lied numerous times and had forged DNA evidence, birth certificates, and other documents and that Barreras had been unjustly forced to pay $20,000 in support, even though Trevino had never publicly produced the child. In December, having run out of excuses, Trevino borrowed a little girl from a stranger on the street and took her into the courtroom to “be” her and Barreras’ daughter. But the stranger followed Trevino inside and exposed the ruse. Gov. Bill Richardson ordered an investigation as to how so many state officials had been hoaxed for so long.

What Would Republican Jesus Do? Miracles of the trickle-down messiah And it came to pass that Republican Jesus met with His advisers, strategists and corporate cronies. He took them and withdrew apart to a deserted city called Bethesda. But the multitudes followed Him nonetheless. So Republican Jesus asked His cronies to build Him a great stadium where He could welcome members of the multitudes able to pay Him an admission fee and purchase vast quantities of licensed merchandise at exorbitant prices. He welcomed these people and sent off those who needed medical attention to a land called Canada. The light of the day began to wane, so His toadies said to Republican Jesus: “Send these stinky riffraff away, that we may cross the Beltway to our home, and get steaks and baked potatoes and double martinis and crème brulées, for here we are in a barren place with naught but a TCBY and a vestigial relic of the Hardee’s chain.” He answered them: “Stop whining, for God’s sake. You will soon have more than enough to eat.” They said to Him: “But we have a mere five Power Bars and two Diet Cokes. We are twelve advisers, strategists and corporate sycophants, and many of us are portly, and with all due respect, that sucks hard.” He told His hangers-on: “Sit down, shut up, and give me all of your money.” With that Republican Jesus raced to his waiting SUV and ordered his chauffeur to fly like the wind. “As a rising tide lifts all boats,” He cried from his speeding automobile, “so shall you benefit from the increased economic activity generated by the money you have given Me! I will buy Myself a sumptuous banquet and several portable electronic devices and also ho’s, creating jobs in the food/electronic/ho sectors that you will take in order to feed yourselves. Give a man a fish and he eats a fish, but teach a man to fish at rock-bottom wages and we all shall eat his fish.” Then Republican Jesus turned his attention to household affairs. His mother Republican Mary said to Him: “Your father Republican Joseph is away on business, but do not worry, for he has left us with ample savings. Moreover, positive cash flow is projected for many years to come. Republican Jesus said to her: “What does that have to do with me?” Now there were six bricks of cash hidden by the elder Mr. Christ in a lockbox, containing one trillion dollars each. Republican Jesus ordered his mother: “Set Dad’s money on fire.” Republican Jesus had been hitting the sauce and talking crazy, so she complied. “Now go to the

Republican Jesus, file photo temple,” He continued, “and borrow ten more bricks from the moneylenders.” When Joseph returned, he didn’t know where the extra four bricks of cash had come from. (Mary knew, but didn’t dare tell him.) Joseph told Republican Jesus: “I don’t know how you did it, but our days of independent carpentry are over. Let’s launch a hostile takeover of Home Depot!” It was at this time that someone came to Republican Jesus to tell Him of the death of a certain man, Lazarus. So Republican Jesus appealed to the Roman military governor, Pontius Pilate. “Proconsul,” He said in the city forum, “evildoers from the east have slain Lazarus and other taxpaying citizens. We must therefore assemble a great army of slaves equipped with the sharpest swords to invade Parthia and its allies. Only by making the sands of Parthia run red with Parthian blood shall we avenge Lazarus, liberate Parthia’s oppressed vassal states and eliminate the threat posed by their illegal and illicit catapults.” Pilate tried to argue with Republican Jesus. “Our glorious emperor Augustus has exchanged observers with the Parthian court at Nisa as part of a treaty of peace. No one has seen the catapults you describe. And Lazarus died from medical malpractice. Parthia had nothing to do with it.” “Can you take that chance? Do you trust your safety to Parthia?” Republican Jesus goaded the crowd. “Will you stand idly by while Parthia re-arms on the road to a smoky cloud over a burning Rome?” “No!” the crowd roared as He rolled his eyes. And so one Roman army after another marched east, never to return. And this became known as the miracle of the vanishing soldiers. MTW

Sex. Spiritual sex. Divine love. Sting’s fivehour marathon. Kundalini energy and the positions of The Kama Sutra. Multiple full-body orgasms that last for days. Intense waves of bliss. PC muscle workouts. Tantric G-Spot orgasms and female ejaculation. I was invited to watch. But it’s not what you think. I know, because I spent the weekend before Valentine’s Day on a quest to understand the tantric secrets. Janet Kira and Dr. Sasha Lessin live and practice tantra in Wailuku. They are an earthy couple in their early 50s, brighteyed and beaming. They are what you would expect Caucasian mainlanders who moved here many years ago would look like. He is tall and slender, with longish, wavy, salt and pepper hair, bright blue eyes and loose clothing. She is a petite woman with pale skin, long blonde hair and almost feline features. The Lessins introduce me to Jack and Jill (not their real names), the couple I will observe in a “private session.” We are led into a small room with a large Persian rug, a couple of folded futons and several large cushions on the floor. In the room are three walls of bookcases overflowing with several texts on Polyamory, a Hypnotherapy Encyclopedia, The New Male by Herb Goldberg, Influences on Human Development, Erotic Art of the Masters, some fiction by Dan Simmons and Tom Robbins, Plants and Flowers of Hawaii and seemingly all of Michael Moore’s books, including Stupid White Men. A plethora of framed certificates with Dr. Lessin’s name fill in the wall space between cases. Dr. Lessin says that tantra is not just about sexual love, but having total concern for the whole person. He says the Sanskrit word

“tantra” means “to weave,” as in each energy level in the body, or chakras. He hands out a sheet on chakras. He explains the belly chakra is the power chakra, which empowers us to choose “to lead or follow.” The heart chakra represents give and take, the ability to “assess reciprocity.” The throat chakra, he says, enables us “to speak authentically or to keep silence when it’s more intelligent to do so.” He says the clown chakra is the most powerful, but it isn’t listed on the handout. “What?” exclaims Jill. “What’s the Clown Chakra?” “Being able to see the humor of life,” says the good doctor. Everyone laughs. Then he goes through the chakra chants. “Lahmmmm…” is for the perineum chakra. “Vahmmm…” is the genitals. “Rahmmm…” is the belly, or power chakra. And so on. Then Dr. Lessin sits with his wife in the “Yab Yum” position. He sits, crosslegged, while she sits facing him, with her legs wrapped around his lower back. They each have one hand on the other’s heart, the other hand on each other’s lower back. Together, they chant or “combine in sound.” “Lahmmm, vahmmm, rahmmm, yahmmm…” “In tantra,” says Dr. Lessin, “we make a lot of eye contact.” They synchronize their breathing, in through the nose, out through the mouth, breathing in shallow rhythm. Then they work towards syncopating their breathing; as she inhales, he exhales and vice versa. “When you breathe out,” he says, “you are saying ‘I love you, take in my love.’ When you breathe in—‘you love me, you’re taking my love in.’ Your breath is symbolic. “Just feel the energy,” says Dr. Lessin.
“Lahmmm, vahmmm, rahmmm, yahmmm, hammm, ohhmmmmmm…. Belly hold, pelvis hold, send energy up.” Jack and Jill try it out. Then Dr. Lessin demonstrates with his wife a particular posture to use when you are not getting along as a couple. It looks suspiciously like spooning. “Even if you’re mad,” he says, “your bodies remember that you’re lovers.” In the course of my tantra research, I amassed quite a stack of information. There were two CDs, a DVD, a videotape, three books, two pamphlets that looked like manifestos, innumerable press clips, postcards and even a magic ball that lights up when you “connect with your beloved.” I feel overwhelmed by all this information. I simultaneously want to find a Shakti for my Shiva and practice the Congress of the Cow, as well as shun any and all sexual relations for a while. I am fascinated and repulsed by all this talk of intimacy and sexual healing, spirituality and divine love. During my research, I asked virtually everyone I know about what they knew about tantra. “I thought that was for swingers,” one friend told me. “Isn’t Sting into that?” said another. And they were all young people. I am intrigued and skeptical about the connection between mind, body and spirit and how that unification joins with all beings. I want to open up, focus on being in the here and now, being present. But that’s way too much New Age phooey for my yoni to handle right now. So back to Dr. Lessin. Still with Jack and Jill, Lessin describes the first phase of tantra, which focuses on the worship of the woman. He says the “yoni”— Sanskrit for vagina—massage is not to be used as an isolated sexual experience, but as an opportunity for the relationship. It’s a time for the woman to feel all her emotions and achieve vulnerability, to be listened to and understood. He talks of the “Imago Process,” where the man is instructed to say to the woman, “Tell

But it’s not what you think
me all the things that hurt you and tell me what I can do to heal those hurts.” Dr. Lessin reiterates that this first part— Adoring Aphrodite—establishes processes in the Imago Session to ensure a positive relationship. The second part focuses on sexual healing and expression. Jack and Jill need to set a tantric date, “just receiving” and expressing feelings. Jack will give Jill a bath and “special massage.” Dr. L gives a handout on female genital anatomy, telling the couple what they must ritualize and make sacred. “Just brush past the nipples, the labia,” says Dr. L. “Ask to touch. You can’t say yes all the time or it won’t mean anything! Say, ‘not yet.’ Touch with your left hand the base chakra and make a blessing.” The doctor displays a large, stuffed model of a vagina. It is purple velvet with shiny gold lips, and red inside. He tells Jack to use lots of saliva on Jill’s yoni. Then he demonstrates oral and fingered stimulation on the purple stuffed model. “We like to use poetic metaphors,” says Dr. L. “Say, ‘Sweetheart, I’d like to polish your pearl.’” He refers to the anatomy handout. “[Jack] is going to make a systematic exploration of every millimeter of your vagina or yoni, feeling all the muscles, tissues, deep,” says Lessin. “Free-associate anything that comes to mind as he’s doing this. Just let it out—whether it’s inappropriate sexual memories or a movie you saw or what’s going on in Iraq.” He hands the couple a sheet on Fathom Female features. Dr. L explains the scientific process of amrita—female ejaculation or “nectar of the gods,” as tantrikas refer to it—and the intense vaginal orgasm. He tells Jill she does not have to have intercourse if she doesn’t want to. He tells Jack to keep his fingers loose—“they’re a lot harder than the tongue or penis.” He tells him each finger has a different consciousness. Sometimes the most sensitive finger is the little one. “It may not happen,” says Dr. L about female ejaculation. “It doesn’t get an ‘F’ if you don’t squirt!”
Muir says he has been blessed with much inspiration and “teachings” from the women in his life. When he was still a novice to the idea, one woman approached him and offered tantric guidance. He gave his standard reply from years of teaching yoga: “I don’t sleep with my students.” “I’m not your student,” the woman replied. “I’m your teacher. I’m not talking about sleeping, I’m talking about an awakening.” He tells me that these days, it’s no longer a battle of the sexes. It’s about how to be a better lover on all levels. Naturally, when you
My tantric journey was really taking me places. Literally. Following directions that will take me deep into the heart of Huelo, past highway markers that start and end a couple of times, down a road with no street sign that is merely marked by the sudden appearance of many mailboxes and a pay phone, well past paved roads and any logical construct of neighborhoods, over small bridges with no railings, down dirt paths that fork and veer off into each other, past an old Hawaiian church and signs that say “Please, Slow, Children” and “Bamboo Farm,” I am instructed to heed this warning: We need your support to drive slowly when you enter the dirt road. Our neighbors are sensitive to the speed and we do have children playing. Please start your meditation with five miles per hour when you enter the gate of old Hawaii.

“It’s not just “get it up, get it in, get it off” anymore,” says Charles Muir, a cheerful man in his early 60s. I met with Charles Muir, long considered one of the pioneers of Western tantric practices since the early 1980s, at his home in Makawao. He has been a yoga teacher and student since 1966 with Richard Hittleman, and was even awarded certificates in New York for positive community contribution because of the yoga he taught. Muir became interested in tantra in the late 1970s. Hittleman talked with Muir about White Tantra, which are solo practices connecting breathing, concentration and energy and Red Tantra, which included partners. In 1979, Muir decided to pursue tantric teaching. He gave his yoga studios to two students and came to Maui, where there weren’t any yoga—or tantric—schools formed yet. It’s hard to imagine now.

want to be a better tennis player or golfer, you go to a pro and get lessons. It’s the same premise here. “There’s a difference between sex and love, and sex and tantra,” says Muir. “Sex is biological, tantra is an art form.” Co-author of the book Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving, Muir says, “It’s about being nurtured, satisfied, valued, loved.” Since 1980, Muir has taught over 10,000 people and certified 37 instructors in advance training at his school’s popular annual seminar. He tells me about 75 percent of his students come from the mainland. He admits it’s quite a commitment, with fees and airfare amounting to about $5,000 for the week. One of his disciples, a local cardiologist, attended the training with his wife, who was terrified at first. Since then, they’ve been to seven seminars over the past few years. Muir says the physician uses the training in consulting heart patients after surgery. Students attending the workshop spend five hours a day in the classroom. Then they are given homework to do in the privacy of their room. The Muirs have devised something like 35 “sexercises” for energy, intimacy and touching. He gives instruction in sacred spot massage, which he originated. He believes that this spot, often called the G-Spot, goes right into a person’s psyche. He says that we store memories and emotions in our chakras and that it is up to men to be the “master of helping her dump without being dumped upon.” Men don’t understand feelings, he says. Women have all kinds of feelings and memories related to sex, from their first menstruation to the sex they had in a bad marriage. He says tantra is a way to make love a celebration. “We want to become masters at the art of loving.” Tantra teaches to love her, “not fuck her.” It is energetically-based. You have to practice love. He tells students to be open-minded. He realizes the first exercise is scary. In a room, couples are told to separate from their partner and choose a stranger. Then they are told to stroke that person’s arm, but not in a sexual manner. Their comfort and trust levels are tested. People who have been married 25 years may not feel the need for much effort but with strangers, they try to get it right. “The penis and vagina are important,” says Muir, “but there’s a whole person there. It is such an important subject that we haven’t been trained on.”

Kutira and Raphael greet me in front of their palatial, self-sustaining sanctuary. They are the last people I’m to see for my tantric research. There is a peaceful grace about the couple. They move fluidly and welcome me in, leading me upstairs to a large, sun-filled room overlooking the lush cliffs and ocean views of Maui’s north shore. We sit on backed-cushions and talk about what tantra means to them. They are quick to point out that while some teachings of tantra focus on sex, that is really only one piece of the pie. “Tantra is not just a practice or a skill you use in your bedroom,” says Kutira. “It is how you live your life.” They tell me that there are many interpretations of the ancient texts of tantra that originated in India in 3,000 B.C. Obviously, tantra is a very personal and intimate process and it’s important to find the right teacher. They talk more of the interconnectedness of all things, rather than prolonged orgasm or pubococcygeal (PC) muscle control. “Tantra brings profound joy, peace, harmony and the sense of love,” says Kutira, “which only comes from being connected and centered in the heart.” She also tells me that tantra infuses more consciousness, energy, intimacy and love into sex, transforming it into an extended meditation that “affects us on every level of our being.” They also tell me that most of their students are doctors, lawyers and other upper-class professionals. But then they say they want more working class students and young people. “Those are the people who need it the most,” says Kutira. Pa’ina Food Court The best college cafeteria ever The Pa’ina Food Court is the best college cafeteria I’ve ever visited. At first it looks like any other food court, with groups of young people, some lugging backpacks and others with rollable suitcases, eating at round tables. Some students have their noses buried in textbooks while others are playing cards, talking on cell phones or absently chewing while staring up at the TV screens that silently show the Food Channel.

Open 11 a.m.1:30 p.m., except La Patisserie, which is open 7:30 a.m. to closing. $ The people who make the food here are students of the culinary program at Maui Community College. It’s divided into sections. From one side to the other: Farm to Table, World Plate, Paniolo Grill, Raw Fish Camp, Campus Café and La Patisserie, a place to buy desserts. I sat next to a woman pecking at a salad and dug into my meal. At long last, I was able to savor one of the house specials: The French Dip Panini. It’s served with shredded roast bread, sautéed onions and cheese in toasted foccacia bread. A salad comes on the side. It’s heavy, but costs less than $7. Nothing at Pa’ina Food Court costs more than $10, but it’s still imaginative and high-end. There’s roasted eggplant, tomato basil, wild mushroom and provolone panini sandwich, honey-dipped chicken, grilled vegetable spring roll with basil, hot garlic eggplant, baked salmon with raspberry BBQ sauce, Indonesian stir fry, grilled ham, and a three cheese, tomato and pineapple sandwich served with onion rings. You can get sushi at Raw Fish Camp. It’s prepared by a Japanese guy who says very little.

Order in the court Pa’ina Food Court even sports a fancy dining restaurant, which is, like the rest of the place, run by students of the culinary academy. It is upstairs and called The Class Act and is open Wednesday and Friday. The staff is all advanced pupils and a four-course lunch is served for $25. The food served here is startingly upscale: crispy duck leg confit, roasted vegetable crepe with smoked mozzarella, horseradish-crusted salmon with Buerre de Montpellier and Filet Mignon au Poive. The program is maintained by the money the students make serving food, advising
restaurants and selling the various jams and jellies the culinary academy produces under its Made In Maui label. I watch the students as they fillet, stir, broil and tenderize. I was once a culinary student, so I know what they’re going through. Except I was in an occupational program. The chef who taught us loved to yell and bragged incessantly about how he helped invent the spatula. He would also humiliate us by forcing us to march past the auto shop while balancing a tray of food. It didn’t take me long to drop out. But these kids will eventually cook for the

April Prados Server, Charley’s I’m a professional waitress. I’ve been in the food service industry for 11 years since I was 16. I had just gotten my license and always ended up at the beach instead of school. My parents said that if I got a job then I could get my GED. And the rest is history. I started at Makawao Steak House then Hali’imaile General Store and Mama’s Fish House and now at Charley’s for the past six months. I like Charley’s. It’s relaxed and casual and close to home. Close to home is the most important to me. Waitressing can be pretty special, you get to meet a lot of people. It can be stressful, too. Sometimes there are 20 things to do at one moment. Most customers are pretty patient when it gets hectic. Most, but not all. What my customers don’t know is that although we get busy, it’s a hell of a lot easier than being a mom. At the end of the night, I count my tips, I’m done being a waitress. But you never get a break being the mommy, and you never get tips. But I love my kids so much. There is always someone to play with and watching them grow is wonderful. Not to mention having someone love you unconditionally. Me and my husband have a pretty good system. He works all day and then at night I can get all dressed up for work and he takes over from there. Playing with my children is my number one hobby. I’ve got twin six-year-olds and a twoyear-old son. We go to the beach a lot. We love the beach. Especially Ho’okipa, that’s my second favorite. I don’t tell people my favorite because then they’ll start going there because it’s perfect. But I like to go grocery shopping alone, surprisingly. It’s peaceful for me. My weakness is food. I can’t help but eat. My favorite weakness is desserts and sweets. Charley’s has great Kona Coffee Mud Pie. That’s my number one recommendation. Charley’s has big portions so most people don’t have room for dessert. I smile and give them their check, but I think they’re missing out on the best part. MTW

Year of the Rooster Friday-Saturday, island-wide [HOLIDAY] The Year of the Rooster teaches us lessons in order, scrutiny and strategic planning, according to Shelly Wu in Chinese Astrology: Exploring the Eastern Zodiac. And what better way to kick it off than by strategically planning on celebrating this weekend at a location near you! The Chinese New Year began on Feb. 9 but celebrations here start on Friday. Below are some of the highlights. Friday, 11:30 a.m. at Lahaina Cannery Mall You can expect the lighting of 25,000 firecrackers and lion dancing. The Lion Dance is a tradition thought to bring good luck, happiness and good fortune as you “feed the lions” and “get bitten.” But it’s also a spectacular display of martial arts, music and costumery, demonstrated this year by Au’s Shaolin Arts Society. Friday, 2:30 p.m. at Whalers Village, Kaanapali More of the Lion Dance here. “The Lion is a mythical, heavenly being who came to earth to replace old, stale and stagnant energy with renewed, fresh and vibrant life energy,” according to the press release. For info, call 661-4567. Saturday, 10 a.m. at the Maui Mall, Kahului Again, more festivites featuring the lighting of 25,000 firecrackers and lion dancing, as well as a martial arts demonstration by Au’s Shaolin Arts Society at 11 a.m. There’ll also be prize giveaways and a chance at testing your skills for $1,000. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Jason Mraz and Makana Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [MUSIC] These two guys have a lot in common. They are both young and, most would say, pretty darn attractive. They both sing, write songs and play guitar. Both have names that start with “M.” Both are musicians who’re fond of merging genres, such as roots rock, jazz and world music. And both like to have photos taken of them on mountain tops. Jason Mraz (lower right) gained notoreity for his 2002 debut album and hit single, “The Remedy,” mixing “country and roots rock with the poeticism of coffeehouse folk, elements of jazz, and the rhythmic charge of hip-hop.” And Makana (upper right) is an island favorite with “a strong foundation in traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar, to which he adds the influences Friday, 7 p.m. in Campbell Park (across from Pioneer Inn), Lahaina of folk, rock, jazz and world music.” [FILM] The Chinese New Year Celebration in Lahaina (see p. 19) will include a free showing of the Also featuring special guest Tristan Academy-award winning martial arts epic, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. And it’s free, I said! Prettyman. Tickets are $20, $22.50, $27.50. Call 242-7469.

DAY
VD is for Lovers Monday, all day, all night, aww… yeah! [HOLIDAY] There’s really so much you could do. Whether you decide to treat your honey to dinner or watch the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” on the History Channel (10pm/9 Central) or both, V-Day is ripe with opportunity. As for me, I’ll be trying out the “Orgasmic Shower Mousse” at the Hyatt Spa Moana—solo, thanks. But do you know how this holiday originated? There’s lots of theories, really—one being that St. Valentine was a priest who performed marriages for young couples in secret because a Roman Emperor had proclaimed single men made better soldiers. Now isn’t THAT romantic?! If you do decide to venture out for this weird, weird holiday, be sure to check the Grid & DaKine Calender (p. 26) for dining and entertainment ideas.

I wanna see the chick named Allegra. Awwww yeaaaaaah! romance between Albert and Allegra that resonates as the film’s backbone. The moment when Albert wins his first kiss with Allegra is a classic love scene that states the film’s entire theme in a nutshell. Even after preparing with Hitch for the inevitable opportunity at a first kiss, Albert is unable to overcome his shyness
until he can size up Allegra’s attraction for him from a distance and take a running start at it. Here again it’s Kevin James comic timing that taunts the audience into endorsing the romantic air of the movie. As mid February rolls around, Hitch is the first competent romantic comedy of the year. COACH CARTER – (PG13) – Drama – Inspired by true-life story of controversial high-school basketball coach Ken Carter, who received both high praise and staunch criticism when he made national news in 1999 for benching his entire undefeated basketball team for poor academic performance.
WEDDING DATE – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – This film concerns a young woman who hires a gigolo to accompany her to her sister’s nuptials. See, her ex-boyfriend is going to be there, and she needs to make him jealous so, um, I don’t know. Really, what the hell am I doing writing about this? There are people dying in Sudan, and I’m boosting some junk film that stars no one anyone should be concerned about.
Short Cut to Nirvana: Kumbh Mela 5 and 7:30 p.m. More than 70 million pilgrims, including H.H. The Dalai Lama, attend this extraordinary spiritual festival, which is the biggest gathering of people in the history of humanity and has been held in India for over two millennia. A sensory experience of an ancient, grand occasion, a swirl of color and motion, song and cacophony, the sacred and the surreal—spiritual India exactly as anyone would hope to find it. Even The Hollywood Reporter raved: "Engages us with intelligently shot stunning imagery. It reminds one of a '60s peace and love festival, only with gurus on cell phones and sadhus striding past Internet tents." Must be seen to be believed. Unrated. 85 min.

Motorcycle Diaries 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater A gorgeous, poetic and soulful epic road movie shot in Manchu Picchu and other spectacularly beautiful locations throughout South America that provides a glimpse into the transcendent 8,000 mile journey of a young Che Guevara, played by Gael Garcia Bernal and his sidekick. Directed by Walter Salles. In Spanish with English subtitles. Rated R. 127 min.
New This Week HITCH – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – Will Smith plays a matchmaker who uses less than honest methods in his work—whahhhhh???!?!—and then gets busted by a totally hot undercover reporter played by Eva Mendes. Oh, and there’s a chick in the movie named after a popular antihistamine. HOTEL RWANDA – (PG13) – Drama – Intense movie based on the 1994 genocide that gripped Rwanda. It concerns about a small-time hotel manager (Don Cheadle) provides sanctuary to terrified residents as roving gangs slaughter thousands. The PG13 rating means they’ve probably toned down the hacking. POOH’S HEFFALUMP MOVIE - (G) - Children, Animation - Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Roo and Tigger, too! search for the mysterious Heffalump, learning about friendship and accepting others’ differences along the way.
Now Showing ALONE IN THE DARK – (R) – Action/Adventure, Suspense/Horror and Thriller – A detective of the paranormal discovers that evil demons worshiped by the ancient Abskani culture are planning on coming back to life in the 21st century to once again take over the world. Aw, sounds like a bad case of food poisoning to me. Just sleep it off, buddy. You’ll be all right. ARE WE THERE YET? – (PG) – Romantic Comedy – Ice Cube stars in this light-hearted look at how a swinging bachelor takes his girlfriend’s kids on a road trip to impress her, but finds that they really only want to turn his life into a living hell. How do they come up with this stuff? ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 – (R) – Action/Adventure/Crime/Gangster – This is a remake of John Carpenter’s second film, and hits all the usual shoot-‘em-up notes: deranged gang bent on springing an incarcerated mobster lays siege to an undermanned police station. Ethan Hawke plays the cop in charge who ends up arming Lawrence Fishburne and the other jailbirds to defend the station. THE AVIATOR – (PG13) – Drama – This is Martin Scorsese’s 168-minute epic on Howard Hughes that includes only a brief interlude of the billionaire’s most intriguing years when he became renowned for living in secret while wearing tissue boxes on his feet and growing out his hair and fingernails to absurd lengths, all while keeping jars of his own urine close by. Stars Leonardo di Caprio as the nutty flyer/film maker. BOOGEYMAN – (PG13) – Suspense/Horror – If you’ve ever wondered whatever happened to

ELEKTRA – (PG13) – Action/Adventure – Jennifer Garner reprises her role as the hottie superhero assassin who nearly upstaged Ben Affleck’s Daredevil two years ago. Anyhoo, though she died in that flick, she was reborn for this one so she could kill some dude and his little girl for the super-assassin group Order of the Hand. Sweeeet. FINDING NEVERLAND – (PG13) – Drama – Johnny Depp plays J. M. Barrie, the guy who wrote Peter Pan in this London, 1904 story. You remember Peter Pan, right? Sandy Duncan played him on Broadway. Also stars Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman. HIDE AND SEEK – (R) – Thriller – Not to be confused with the 1999 film of the same name starring Daryl Hannah and Vincent Gallo, or the 1980 flick about Israel or even the 1977 War Games clone, this is a Robert DeNiro horror film about how his young daughter’s imaginary friend is actually real. HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS – (PG13) – Action/Adventure, Foreign – This movie takes place near the end of China’s Tang Dynasty, which was, well, a while ago. Anyway, two cops arrest this hot dancer who has underworld ties, then decide that she’s too hot to bring downtown so they escape with her on some kind of perilous journey. Cool. IN GOOD COMPANY – (PG13) – Comedy, Drama – Poor sap Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) ends up demoted from head of ad sales and has to work for a new boss, Carter Duryea (Topher Grace), who is not only half his age, but also decides to date Foreman’s hottie 18-year-old daughter Alex (Scarlett Johansson). Those naughty up-and-comers! LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU – (R) – Comedy – A decidedly quirky Wes Anderson flick about an internationally famous oceanographer (Bill Murray), who along with his possibly long lost son (Owen Wilson), takes his wingnut crew (headed by a brilliantly wussy Willem Dafoe) on an expedition to hunt down the elusive Jaguar Shark that killed his partner. MEET THE FOCKERS – (PG13) – Comedy – Four years ago, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) met his fiance’s parents, including ex-CIA man Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and his wife (Blythe Danner). This time, we meet The Fockers—a liberal stay-at-home dad (Dustin Hoffman) and his senior citizens’ sex therapist wife (Barbara Streisand). Usually, I’m skeptical about all-star casts but Bobby De Niro, Tootsie and Babs? C’mon! MILLION DOLLAR BABY – (PG 13) – Romantic Drama – This Oscar-nominated film is getting rave reviews, but it’s really just another cliché-filled picture about a young boxer who’s had a tough life but, through sheer force of will, fights the good fight. Stars Hillary Swank, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood, who also directed it. OCEAN’S TWELVE – (PG13) – Action/Adventure, Romance, Thriller, Crime – This is the heist caper that out-heists the previous heist caper Ocean’s Eleven, which in itself was a remake of the horrendously awful Rat Pack-starring Ocean’s 11. This time around, the band of cons and thieves gets together again to rip off someone really rich in Europe to pay off the Vegas casino guy they ripped off in the first movie. Stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and all the rest.
WHITE NOISE - (PG13) - Thriller - Jonathan Rivers (Michael Keaton) plays a man whose peaceful existence is shattered by the unexplained death of his wife Anna, and who is eventually contacted by a man claiming to be receiving messages from Anna through “household recording devices.” What the hell are “household recording devices?!”

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA – (PG13) – Drama, Musical, Suspense – It’s the classic tale—and another cinematic take on a Broadway musical, oh joy—about a mysterious masked figure who roams the undergrounds of 19th century Paris, especially lurking around (or under—naughty!) the Opera Populaire, where he tutors a beautiful young soprano. RACING STRIPES – (PG13) – Comedy, Drama, Kids/Family – A traveling circus accidentally leaves behind a baby zebra—I know, it happens all the time— so then the precocious zebra gets the inclination to become a racetrack-star, with a little help from his farm animal friends... Okay, is it just me or does it sound like somebody had a few too many special brownies when they came up with this screenplay? SIDEWAYS – (R) – Comedy and Drama – This could be your typical road-tripping buddy flick, only the “buddies” in question are Miles (Paul Giamatti)—a downand-out failed novelist, middle school teacher and bitter divorcee but apt wine connoisseur—and his happy-

BY JOE GATTO
The Almost Famous Rowan Brothers The Rowan Brothers are a folk/bluegrass/pop vocal harmony sibling group. They each play acoustic guitar. Each layers beautifully, one on top of the other. With impeccable harmonies, their heartfelt lyrics tell stories of Americana. They sing gorgeous love songs, and “heart” is a very common lyric in their songbook. Phrases like “Bring the heart of this woman back to the heart of this man”
and “the ins and outs of the pathways of the heart” characterize their romantic lyrics about how “I need you” and “love is a river flowin’ free. It carries you and it carries me.” Their claim to fame seems to be having once been associated with the Grateful Dead. The relationship almost led the Rowan Brothers to become famous in the early 1970s. Apparently, Jerry Garcia, David Geffen and Columbia Records picked the Rowan Brothers
to be the next big thing. But as is all too common in the industry, it just didn’t work out. Regardless, Chris and Lorin Rowan persevered and continue to make music solely for their own pleasure. The best song I heard from them was “My Father’s Son.” It’s the story of their dad and how he was kind of an Irish rascal, a dreamer and the life of the party. They sing his tale of gambling away the money for the bills, losing his car and shrugging it off without a care. The brothers inherited his lust for life and goodtime spirit. Basically, they’re following the musician’s life. They have a new CD called Now and Then that compiles old highlights and new tracks with some special guest appearances. The “Now” part of the double disc features Phil Lesh of the Dead on bass and David Grisman on mandolin. And one of the “Then” highlights is the Rowan Brothers opening for the Grateful Dead at the 1971 farewell to the Fillmore West show in which Jerry Garcia and others backed them up in a high energy performance. The song “Circle of Friends” from this disc brings full circle their relationship with great musical partners and the brothers‚ evolution.
The Rowan Brothers Sat., Feb. 12 at Paradice Bluz in Lahaina, 667-5299; Mon., Feb. 14 at Casanova in Makawao, 572-0220; Thurs., Feb. 17 at Charley’s in Paia, 579-9453 and Fri., Feb. 18 at Hapa’s in Kihei, 879-9001. The Rowan Brothers grew up outside Boston. They played music their whole lives and jammed as a family. Their older brother Peter got famous in the Bluegrass world after joining Bill Monroe’s band. Peter then hooked up brothers Chris and Lorin with famous mandolin player Dave Grisman, who was Jerry Garcia’s long-time collaborator. Chris Rowan even went to England in the late 1960s to see if the Beatles would sign him. He decided to return to Boston after a fruitless, though adventurous, three months. In 1970, the Rowan Brothers moved to the Bay Area on Grisman’s recommendation and got in tight with the burgeoning scene. They lived on Stinson Beach and jammed with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and other San Francisco luminaries. Fame never really grabbed them, but they continued playing gigs around the Bay Area and recorded albums with their brother Peter in the seventies. Now and Then is actually only the second album featuring just Chris and Lorin as a duo. Their genuine style and gorgeous harmonies have remained solid and kept people enthralled all these years. MTW

the slack-key/vocal team of Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau. Barry is one of the most prolific and wellrespected composers, performers and producers in Hawai‘i. They will be joined by Charley Ka`upu, renowned for chanting, to provide another summit on a truly magical Maui evening. Tickets: $35, $25, $10. 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC, 242-7469. Forthright, ground-breaking, and often controversial, comedy star Margaret Cho has made a career out of taking social issues full-on. As one of the most visible and funniest Asian American women in the country, and the first in history to star in her own TV series, she has tackled the subjects of ethnicity, weight, sexuality, drug and alcohol problems; no subject is taboo as material for her rapier wit. Her hit Off-Broadway show I'm The One That I Want garnered rave reviews and awards, and has been made into film. Tickets: $45, $35, $25. 7:30 p.m, Castle Theater, MACC, 242-7469. Dianne Reeves - April 10. Dianne Reeves is an empress in the jazz world, with expansive range, impeccable pitch and evocative compositions. The simmering effect Dianne brings to a song has earned her many plaudits and special appearances, ranging from HBO to the Olympics as well as the major jazz festivals and the LA Philharmonic. Tickets: $38, $28, $20. 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC, 242-SHOW. Kokua Benefit Festival - April 13. Musician/filmmaker Jack Johnson hosts a benefit concert for Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Johnson will share the stage with legendary singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, Hawaiian favorite John Cruz, Afro-Latin-style-masher group Ozomatli, hip-hop infused blues pioneers G.Love & Special Sauce, and talented slack key guitarist Kawika Kahiapo with his band Kaukahi. In addition to that eclectic mix of live music, the festival will offer information on earth-friendly products, services and environmentally-active groups, to help promote environmental awareness in Hawaii. Tickets: $35 general admission (lawn), $40 reserved. 4 p.m., A&B Amphitheater, MACC., 242-SHOW. Na Palapalai - April 22. Kuana Torres, Kehau Tamure and Keao Costa all learned to play music the old-fashioned way: in family backyards from friends, relatives, and kupuna. Now, as Na Palapalai, they aim to please a whole new generation of fans by preserving the traditional Hawaiian sound of ha‘i (falsetto) with their

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Redwood trees depend on periodic forest fires to reproduce. Hence, effective fire prevention unfortunately limits their reproductive opportunities. You, too are suffering from a lack of fire. Fear of getting burnt has had you tamping down sparks and minor blazes wherever they start up, but I wish you wouldn’t. You’ve got dead growth that needs to be cleared away; a massive burn is the best and fastest way to make room for new growth. The core of you, like a redwood’s trunk, is far more inferno-proof than you think. Let the fires grow. You need them.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) When other signs feel blah—grey, gross, unenthused—they cure it by forcing themselves into action. That’s not a good idea for Cancers, though. Pressuring yourself to feel something other than you do is enough to turn a colorless, washed-out mood into a black, churning depression. Don’t make things too hard on yourself when lack of sunlight and warmth leaves you feeling flat and low this week. Let it be. Your mood will lift on its own, next week. Until then, be blah. It’s not so bad; anyway, it’s better than being wracked with despair and misery, isn’t it?
WEBSITE
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Say no now so you can say yes later. Let me expound and explain: You have trouble saying no to bounty, decadence and luxury. That’s not a bad thing; life’s too short to deprive yourself needlessly. But please recognize that there are layers and layers to joy and satisfaction. The delights in front of you pale in comparison with those down the line that you might miss out on if you indulge yourself now. I’ll present a ridiculously obvious example: Gorge on delicious, fat-filled cake now, become unhealthily obese, and miss out on amazing sex because hotties turn up their noses at you. Which is better: passion or a chunk of flour or sugar? Go ahead and keep saying yes to everything, except when a yes now might mean a no later.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Act. Play a version of yourself who actually enjoys chaos and knows how to surf it. If you can’t rise out yourself, you’re going to be miserable this week. There’s no way you can impose order on the disorganization flooding into your life at the moment. Reveling in bedlam is out of character for you, yes, but it’s also the key to enjoying your week. Go ahead and cling to one exhausted central part of yourself if you insist. But if you can slip free of traditional ideas about yourself, you’ll be better off. Go ahead, try it: Tear shit down. It’s more fun than you think.
658 Front Street #126A-7278
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Have you ever dreamt you achieved soul-melting union with someone, then woken up, suddenly utterly disappointed with the person who’s actually sleeping next to you? This is the kind of experience you might face this week. However, I urge you to keep things in perspective before you act rashly. Your dream soulmate isn’t plagued by bad breath, emotional baggage, or mood swings—because they’re made up. So is whatever other alternative you’re contemplating. What you’ve actually got is much, much better, despite its/his/her obvious flaws. Stick with what you know, because abandoning that for a fantasy that simply doesn’t exist would be really, really dumb.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re halfway through an amazing meal—one you’ve loudly complimented several times already—when you discover you’ve been eating monkey brains, human flesh, or fried cockroaches. What do you do? It’s one of the best things you’ve ever tasted, but now that you know what it is, you simply can’t stomach it, let alone enjoy it. It’s too bad, but you’ve got to push that plate away. You’re about to have a revelation like this: what you thought was fantastic actually isn’t great at all—it’s horrible—under the surface. All those flavors you previously considered incredible now just make you ill. You’ve got no real choice: With regret, it’s time to push back your plate, get up from the table and walk away.
Ste. 216, Lahaina
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) It’s galling when your dog gets more auditions than you do, or your girlfriend’s hastily-scrawled novel gets published while your opus languishes on the desks of uninterested editors, or your kid brother—who you helped get the job—suddenly gets promoted past you. This is the kind of luck you’re simply not used to other people benefiting from. Usually, you get the break, the deal, the easy in. Try not to gripe too much when the good fortune misses you—especially because it’s likely to hit someone you love instead. Be happy for them, if you can. You know they’ve swallowed their envy to cheer you on. Now it’s your turn to return the favor.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING!
It’s hard to be last in line when you’ve got as much energy and enthusiasm as you do now. Being relegated to the caboose would be fine for you at most times; it’s often easier for you to get things done pulling strings from behind the scenes. But right now you want direct action, hands-on participation, and having to wait to get it doesn’t sit well with you. Nevertheless, you’re stuck back here. There’s no way for the caboose to pass the locomotive on a single track. You’re not helpless, however. Stoke up your own engines. You could take the lead, simply by going in the opposite direction. You could tear the train apart, it’s true, but you could also take folks (and yourself) to places you’ve never been.

COVER STORY
Don’t light any matches. You might as well be in an airtight room full of farting cows. That’s just how combustible your scene is at the moment. Certain situations could explode like the Hindenburg unless things are kept perfectly cool and controlled. This is no time to indulge in attacks of temper or fits of pique. Your life’s as primed to blow as a leaky bag full of pure hydrogen. Tiptoe softly this week, speak quietly, and avoid anything that might make sparks. You’ll get through this potential crisis if you’re careful and keep your cool. Lose it just a little and you better learn how to draw on your eyebrows; they’ll be burnt off in the resulting blast.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Quit slouching. I can’t tell if your deep slump is some kind of drug-induced hyper-relaxation, or crushed selfesteem, or simply embarrassment about being so great. Whatever—straighten up. Drooping like a wilted rose doesn’t suit you. Stand upright, because you’ve got reason to, whether you feel it or not. At the very least hold your head high because your friends look up to you, and they’re not about to stop because of your bad mood. Before you make your amigos get on their knees just so they can keep admiring you, stand tall, Aries. Stand tall.

Why do things quickly and efficiently when you could do them slowly, individually, by hand? No, that’s not sarcasm; I’m serious. What’s so great about speed and efficiency? Why rush? You’re never going to run out of things to do, so the only reason I can think of to get shit done fast is if you don’t enjoy it. But you actually get off on what you’re up to at the moment. Take your time and soak up every minute. It’s nice (and rare) to be present and productive at the same time, even if your productivity is minute. Screw the next 11 tasks on your list. They’ll wait.

Relinquish all hope of wallflower status this week. You’re wearing reverse camouflage, the opposite of the background you’re hoping to blend into. You wish you could play things low-key, go unnoticed while you sort stuff out. Unfortunately, you just can’t. Might as well milk it. Attention is power, and it’s remarkably versatile. There are lots of things you could do with the spotlight. Your best choice is clear: Use it while you got it, regardless of your mood.

Love on the Rocks What bartenders on Maui know about sex, love and romance What’s the most romantic thing you should do for your loved one on Valentine’s Day? “Promise him that you won’t nag him about how much he drinks on Pro Bowl.” (Kat, 29, Sports Page, Kihei) “I have it easy ‘cause my girlfriend likes flowers. But I’m thinking maybe a private dinner on the beach with a chef who prepares everything for you.” (Ryan, 27, Mulligan’s on the Blue, Wailea) “Do something quiet and thoughtful for just the two of you without all the balloons and flowers and crap. How about just having a damn Valentine?” (Byron, 22, SandBar, Paia) How do you suggest singles cope on this holiday? “If you’re a girl, go out with your girlfriends. Or if you’re a guy, do whatever guys do. Drink a lot at the SandBar? That’s what I’ll be doing.” (Byron) “I don’t celebrate it—single or not. It’s a holiday contrived only for forcing people to spend money on guilt. Valentine’s Day is something you should do everyday if you really love someone.” (Jen, 28, Sly Mongoose, Lahaina) “Go out. Go party, go dancing, do something.” (Ryan) What cocktail is the best aphrodisiac? “Mojitos. Rum and mint makes you want to take your clothes off.” (Kat) “A Beautiful. The cognac and the Gran Marnier create a warming sensation.” (Ryan) “What’s the one that Picasso and Van Gogh used to drink? Oh yeah, absinthe! It’s illegal here.” (Jerry, 35, Hecocks, Lahaina) “Damiana. It’s a liqueur that’s put into margaritas in Mexico. It’s yellow, very sweet and comes in this beautiful bottle shaped like a big woman.” (Jen) “Cosmopolitan. It’s sophisticated, straight vodka masquerading as cranberry. Gets you drunk so you can put your booze goggles on.” (Byron) What is the best way to pick up chicks/guys at a bar? “Shooting pool. Bet shots per game.” (Kat) “Get ‘em drunk.” (Tio, 48, Sly Mongoose, Lahaina) “Be yourself.” (Ryan) “Work at the bar.” (Jen) What is the best way to pick up your bartender/bartendress? “Ask her to ride with you on the back of your Harley in New Zealand.” (Kat) “Stay there all night long, flirt, let them get you drunk then at the end of the night, ask them to come home with you. Although, one time I did that and her boyfriend came to pick her up at last call. I was out 150 bucks! On second thought, never sleep with your bartender ‘cause that’ll be one less bar you can go to if you don’t do it well!” (Jerry) “There are so many ways—and they’re all bad. But every once in a while, you gotta give ‘em a try. It’s like, a girl’s gotta eat!” (Jen) “No cheesy lines in front of other customers. Be straight up. Ask if you can buy them a drink after their shift. But if you’re over 10 years older than me, don’t even try!” (Byron) “Don’t try. Usually we don’t like that too much.” (Ryan) Complete these phrases: —Sex is… “…good for us.” (Jen singing Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”) —Romance is… “…like a dozen roses. They smell sweet on the first day and after a week, it stinks like the water they’re in.” (Kat) —Love is… “…blowing on your lover’s neck with the gentleness of the hand-blowing machine at the bowling alley.” (Kat) What is the secret to long-term relationships? “Learn to ignore your partner. Everybody does things differently. Accept it, don’t get mad.” (Ryan) “No extensive petting in public or physical smothering. Being considerate and respectful and having enough space between the two of you to live your lives.” (Byron) “Communication, understanding and you gotta tell them how important they are often. You have to keep it exciting.” (Bart, 25, Ale House, Kahului) Uncontrollable laughter. (Jen) What is the secret to great sex? “Pleasing your partner.” (Ryan) “Don’t drink.” (Kat) “Handcuffs.” (Byron) MTW
