Anyone who’s flown into Hawaii knows all about the Mandatory Declaration form. One side is the state Department of Agriculture form where you list any plants or animals you’re bringing into the state. Flip it over and you have the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism’s not-so mandatory questionnaire about the purpose of your visit. Recently Maui Time obtained a secret draft of a new form state officials are considering that would save time and effort by combining the two forms into one. Here are some of the proposed questions:

I was in disbelief. If anything, getting out of work at 4 a.m. only to find that one of your tires is gone is almost comical. But why did you have to take the rim and rotor, too? That kind of upset me. Did you know that I’m a single mother of two? That I am working hard to make ends meet? And that I’ve never stolen anything from anyone? What am I saying—of course, you don’t care. Oh, and just to let you know, there are still good people in this world. A kind-hearted police officer put my spare tire on, then a complete stranger loaned me a car for a week while I waited for the rim I had to order. I know you are worse off than me and that makes me happy, I’m sorry to say. My karma got me through this ordeal with little trouble. But what will your karma get you?

Maui Tomorrow’s plans to revolutionize affordable housing The median home price on Maui is a stratospheric $612,000. That’s nearly two thirds of a million dollars. It wouldn’t be so bad for Maui’s working families and lower income residents if the island had a decent mechanism for creating affordable housing, but it doesn’t. As it stands, affordable housing projects are planned on a case-by-case basis. Developers can build them wherever and whenever they wish. Or perhaps they’re never built—there are no sanctions for those who simply don’t build the affordable units listed in the development agreement. The citizens group Maui Tomorrow is trying to change that. For the last couple weeks, they’ve been talking to Maui County Council members about how to force developers to build the agreedupon housing. “We decided at Maui Tomorrow that we would come up with a model that would work for Maui,” said Richard Michaels,

What passes for affordable housing these days

Score: 90 out of 100 The 70,000-ton Legend of the Seas dropped anchor in Maui’s waters early Mar. 19, then sailed away late the next night. Her previous inspection showed a surprising 41 violations and a score just four points shy of failing. Cleaning seemed to be a problem. For instance, in the Deck Four dining room inspectors found that six “previously cleaned” plates at one wait station were “soiled and stored ready for service” as well as another seven plates and a knife at another wait station in similar condition. The main galley coffee room’s clean storage rack contained two soiled shot glasses. In the main galley breakfast area, 11 plates and the storage cabinet holding them were dirty. In the main galley fish station, inspectors found that “the underside of the previously cleaned griddle was soiled.” In the pool bar pantry, inspectors found clean blender pitchers stored on a rack “soiled with a sticky green drink residue.” Inspectors also tried to check out the handwash section of the Windjammer Galley, but found it was “blocked by two large garbage bins.” -Anthony Pignataro

the group’s Affordably Housing Committee chairman. Michaels said he and his wife became convinced of the need to overhaul the affordable housing process while attending Makena development hearings last year. “Hours and hours were debated on affordable housing,” he said. “They debated over how many years they would be affordable. She and I thought, ‘There has to be a better way.’ It’s only in the last 15 to 20 years that the island has really expanded in population. For many years, things were just done this way.” The plan’s most important aspect is the requirement that developers who want to build more than four houses or condominiums must build additional affordable units to get their project’s approval. The number of affordable homes must be the equivalent of 25 percent of a standard project, 33 percent of a “priority” project and 35 percent of a senior housing development. And no more agreeing to build the units, then walking away. The plan makes clear that all affordable units must go up at the same time as the market-priced homes. The plan also contains stipulations that the affordable units must remain affordable—even if resold. “Developers I’ve talked to have said they’d like to know their costs up front,” said Michaels. “This way, they would know.” In addition, builders must distribute the affordable homes within the actual project— not down the street or across the island. Those who refuse to do so would have to pay substantial “in-lieu” fees. “The in-lieu fee would be higher than the cost of constructing affordable units within the development,” states a Mar. 16 Maui Tomorrow press release. But the plan doesn’t just go after homebuilders. Commercial, industrial, resort and

Maui Tomorrow Read the Maui Tomorrow plan at www.maui-tomorrow.org. hotel developers—basically anyone who’s building something that will require 50 or more workers—will have to construct one affordable unit for every four employees or pay the in-lieu fees. Of course, no developer will agree to any of this unless there’s some kind of enforcement agency breathing down his neck. Hence the plan’s County Affordable Housing Authority, which Michaels said would be funded by developer fees and is modeled after a housing board in Vermont. That board has nine members. The governor appoints four of the members while the rest are members of the public. Additionally, one of the public members must be a farmer and another must have an income low enough to qualify for affordable housing. Michaels said he’d like a future county board to have a Native Hawaiian member as well. “My feeling on talking to members of the Council is that they mean business this time,” said Michaels. “It may not be our plan, but hopefully after the end of budget hearings [in a couple months] we’ll have something to look at.” MTW

It isn’t often you see the words “fascinating” and “budget” within six inches of each other. For the most part, Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa’s proposed Fiscal Year 2006 budget fits that bill. But there is one exception, and that would be the 10page chapter marked “Department of Liquor Control.” It’s easy to find, marked with a pretty picture of Hanamanu on the title page. Not sure why they put Hanamanu on the LC page—coastline shots mark each department section—but it does provide a serene introduction to the LC’s financial charts and automaton goals like achieving “voluntary compliance with liquor laws and rules by licensees.” The budget is more than a table of last year’s appropriations placed next to a 2006 wish list, though there is that. The department’s looking to spend $2.37 million in 2006, which is slightly down from 2005’s $2.51 million. Then again, all the monies come straight from liquor fees and fines, which adds a mercenary feel to the outfit. To justify that kind of expenditure, the department estimates that it will carry out 14,800 establishment inspections in 2006—which is actually down from the 2005 projection of 17,200 inspections. But the LC clearly intends to do more with less—they’re predicting 200 case reports in 2006, doubling the 100 projected for this year. More chilling, the LC predicts that its inspectors will write up 295 violations in 2006—down from the projected 2005 figure of 315 but up from 2004’s 222. In addition, in 2006, 85 of those violations should be serious enough to warrant action from the Adjudication Board, up from the 75 projected for this year and way up from the 65 dealt with in 2004. Amazingly, the budget authors have absolute confidence in the abilities and judgment of the Liquor Control Officers. It’s predicting a perfect prosecution record—zero “not guilty” findings, which is exactly what happened in 2004 and is projected to happen this year. MTW

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, MAR. 16 He’s a card-carrying member of the Republican Party but he wants to spend lots of taxpayer dollars on strange, mystical things like “government services.” I am, of course, talking about Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa. His new budget is out—all $404.8 million of it—and it’s chock full of all kinds of new spending. There’s $10.5 million to buy the 80,000-square foot One Main Plaza in Wailuku so the county can have more office space. There’s also $2 million for Maui Community College to help it start a four-year degree program. And a cool $90 million for infrastructure improvements. All capital ideas, but I can’t help wondering what the Republican Party really does stand for out in Hawaii. Does any of this sound like the work of one of them less-government-is-bestgovernment types?

THURSDAY, MAR. 17 And now for news from some of America’s more traditional Republicans. Looks like they’re one step closer to their cherished dream of planting a forest of oil wells in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Yup, the big ANWR drilling bill passed the U.S. Senate yesterday by a squeaky 51-49 vote. For George W. Bush and his party, it marks the first act of what will almost certainly be one of their biggest victories over this nation’s environmental movement, such as it is. And they couldn’t have done it without… Democratic Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye! That’s right, folks: both of Hawaii’s senators voted to let Bush

drill. In fact, the vote was so tight that you can say Bush couldn’t have gotten the ANWR bill through the Senate without Akaka and Inouye. Great job, boys! By the way, have I told you lately that you suck? What happened? Afraid your fellow Democrats were finally beginning to gel as a vigorous opposition? You know, seven Republicans voted against this travesty, but not you! Oh, and stop already with that bullshit you’re slinging around about how your vote was about making sure Alaska’s indigenous peoples’ voices were heard. You sold out for who knows what and now Alaska’s going to become a giant Shell Station. Man, Hawaii better get some good shit out of this deal.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

MONDAY, MAR. 21 FRIDAY, MAR. 18 That great benefactor of human rights and labor justice—as a matter of fact, I am talking about Wal-Mart—accepted a record $11 million fine to settle a federal case that charged the uberstore with “employing” 352 illegal immigrants to work as janitors. Though many of the workers lugged the slop bucket seven days a week, Wal-Mart somehow neglected to pay them overtime pay or injury compensation, though they did helpfully lock them in the stores overnight so they wouldn’t be late to work the next day. A Wal-Mart spokesperson told the Associated Press that the company “should have had better safeguards in place.” She also said the fine was “a lot of money,” which shows that WalMart public relations flacks possess a sense of humor. Because some would say that the $11 million fine is tiny compared to, oh, WalMart’s revenue figures for the last three months of 2004. In fact, the illegal immigrant employment fine represents just 0.35 percent of Wal-Mart’s $3.16 billion in earnings and a microscopic 0.01 percent of the

company’s $82.8 billion in net sales. For just three months. Oh yes, this fine definitely sends a powerful message.

SATURDAY, MAR. 19 Forgot to mention that two days ago The Maui News handed in another entry in the Worst Headline of the Year contest, and it looks like a possible finalist: “Suspects accused of being chased in stolen car then on foot by police.”

these days). Jenck’s project has been in the planning stages for nearly two decades, but he can’t seem to get the Maui County Council to look at it. He’s done everything— cut its number of homes from 2,600 to a mere 1,400; hold public meetings like the one written about in today’s Maui News; slash the number of golf courses from two to one; even come up with a hot new name: Honua’ula, which is Hawaiian for “screwed over.” Just kidding! It actually means “red earth,” which fits. Developers always seem to name their projects for whatever used to exist on the land before they brought in stucco and concrete.

So Charlie Jencks is back in the news. He’s the powerful developer who hooked up with more-powerful developer Everett Dowling and tried to cut the state funding for Akaku public access cable by two-thirds. Anyway, Jencks is still trying to get his Wailea 670 project built (investor and bigtime contractor Steve Goodfellow also took shots at Akaku—hey, it’s the in-thing

Vivienne, an interactive companion accessible on powerful, “third-generation” cell phones, was recently introduced by the Hong Kong company Artificial Life as a high-maintenance, video-image “girlfriend” who goes on dates with you, kisses, speaks six languages, converses on 35,000 topics, accepts flowers and diamonds, and may even marry you (though you also acquire a troublesome motherin-law). Vivienne so far is prudish (no nudity, no sex), owing to Artificial Life’s aim at marketing in modest cultures, but she will appear in Europe and some U.S. cities by the end of this year (at about $6 a month plus airtime). Said one Hong Kong videogame player characterizing Vivienne for The New York Times, “It’s a little bit for the losers.”

Porchia Bennett of Philadelphia was last visited by her father, Lester Trapp, when she was one, then virtually abandoned by her drugaddicted mother, Tiffany Bennett, at age two, to fall to the custody of Tiffany’s drug-addicted sister and the sister’s boyfriend, who lived in rat-infested squalor and who are now charged with killing Porchia at age three through starvation and physical abuse. In February, Trapp and his parents filed a lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia for failing to protect Porchia (with Tiffany also entitled to share the proceeds as Porchia’s “beneficiary”).

BITTER IRONY In 2002, 17 U.S. pilots captured and beaten by Saddam Hussein’s forces in the 1991 Gulf War filed a lawsuit asking for nearly $1 billion from Saddam’s assets frozen by the United States, and in 2003, a federal judge ruled in their favor. However, an appeals court tossed out the case, citing a 2003 post-invasion law that removed jurisdiction for the lawsuit at the behest of the Bush administration, which wants to reserve the frozen assets for rebuilding Iraq. An even larger irony is that Defense Secretary Rumsfeld has publicly conceded that the Iraqi detainees who were abused in 2003 at the Abu Ghraib prison should be compensated, even though the U.S. pilots probably endured worse abuse at the same Abu Ghraib facility in 1991.

MISSING THE POINT In January, Richard Graybill, 42, pleaded guilty in Chester County, Pa., to unauthorized use of a vehicle. He had taken a car that had been parked, awaiting repairs, at a shopping center, but he was later discovered by the car’s owner when he happened to pull up to the drive-thru window at the Wendy’s restaurant where she worked. She confronted him, and he sped away, but he returned a few minutes later and tried to persuade her to sign over the title to him, in that he had put a lot of effort into fixing the car up after he took it.

LEAST COMPETANT PEOPLE Richard Arredondo, 18, and two pals had to be rescued by sheriff’s personnel in California’s San Bernardino National Forest on Feb. 5 after getting lost while mountain biking; on Feb. 6, they went back in to retrieve their bikes, but again got lost and had to be rescued. And according to a study released in the Journal of Advanced Nursing in February, only 3 percent of people with nipple or genital body piercings sought professional health-care advice despite the fact that two-thirds eventually experience problems ranging from infections to interruptions in urinary flow.

Funny guy that Ben Franklin. He astutely pointed out that humanity’s passion for delicious, extravagant food could be all-consuming, yet it wasn’t exactly an accident that he bore more resemblance to a beer barrel than a minuteman. Still, considering Franklin’s wit and intellect, it’s probably best to take the man at his word. Then again, on Maui that’s easier said than done. Have you seen all the elaborate, rich, incredibly expensive joints on this rock? Hmm… do I get that new DVD player or go out to dinner tonight? Still, there’s hope for those of us who decline to splurge just because some chef has waved a “tower” of some delicate seafood beneath our noses. There are dinner deals out there—even in some of Maui’s classiest restaurants—for those who refuse to hand over more than a Hamilton for a meal. That’s right, you can get a decent meal on Maui for less than $10! Here are some of our favorite under-$10 items (though we stuck in a couple that go for $10 exactly, just because it got late and we’re kinda lazy and we know that you really don’t care anyway). So enjoy!

Mambo Café (Paella) Like many great dishes, paella is highly interpretive. There are many ways to make it. In the county of Valencia, Spain, poor fishermen and servants would take the leftovers of lavish banquets held by their rulers and add in whatever other ingredients they could get from the fields. That’s right—leftovers! These days, paella can be made using an endless combination of seafood and meats, vegetables—but always with rice—and is considered Spain’s most popular culinary creation. Milagros Food Co. (Blackened Blue Ahi Taquitos) Probably the most popular pupu on the menu, the Ahi Taquitos are quickly becoming standard fare for most Milagros’ regulars. Heaven forbid their cozy North Shore kitchen should ever run out of this sashimi-grade ahi glazed with a unique house blend of blackening spices, chopped fresh cilantro, then rolled in a natural blue corn tortilla and deep-fried to medium rare. But the key ingredient is that complementary fresh fruit salsa with Asian gooseberry (yeah, okay so it’s kiwi but it sounds much more exotic this way, don’t you think?), Maui pineapple, cantaloupe, sesame seeds and chipotle chili pepper. Mmm… If you’ve never tried them, you shouldn’t try them now. You’ll ruin everything. 3 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-8755. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$8

Hecocks (Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms)

Buzz’s Wharf (Fried Calamari Rings)

Tucked away in an oceanfront corner of the 505 Front Street shopping center, Hecocks is filled with surprises like amazing sunsets, casual atmosphere, a luau show and fat Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms. Yeah, they could be a meal by themselves. The rich and spicy sausage meat bursts into whole mushroom caps, then the whole things are roasted or heated somehow until they’re just right. 505 Front St., Lahaina, 661-8810. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$9.95

Who says fried calamari rings are just an appetizer and don’t constitute a proper meal? Now see here, sir! Have you ever eaten these fried calamari rings? They’re crispy, tender and delectable. Much like Lay’s Potato Chips, you cannot eat a mere one. Were I a religious man, I would dub them the Lord’s fried calamari rings. Plus they come with tartar and marinara sauce. Stella Blues (Tropical Wings and Garlic Bread) Here you have to get a bit creative. Rather than hunt around the menu for an entrée that’s less than $10—don’t bother, nothing’s close—you get to coble together one of your own. Start with their Tropical Wings pupu, which is a plate of their large chicken wings slathered in “tropical” glaze and served with bleu cheese dressing, then add on an order of garlic bread. Trust me—it will fill you up. Located in the Azeka Mauka complex on Pi’ikea Rd., Kihei, 874-3779. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$9.95

I’o (Cowboy Ribs) Bet you never thought you’d see Chef James McDonald’s ritzy, glitzy I’o on a guide to Maui’s cheap eats! But beneath this establishment’s shiny metal interior and panoramic ocean views are some real bargains, foremost of which are the Cowboy Ribs. For just nine bones—get it? See, I used the word “bones” instead of “dollars”… oh, never mind—you can get a plate of “delicate slow braised baby back ribs.” And since this is a high-class joint, they come slathered in “hoisin barbeque glaze” instead of some mere sauce. Plus, you get a bit of green apple confit on the side, to add a little sweetness to the ribs. Now that’s highbrow! 505 Front St., Lahaina, 661-8422.

SandBar & Grill (Crab Cakes) While crab cakes might be the official food of Chesapeake Bay, the crab cakes of the SandBar in Paia will do quite nicely, thank you. Not only are they delicious, tender and filling but they’re also just under $10 so they suit our island-living pocketbook as well. The two thick, furikake-crusted patties of fresh crabmeat and seasoning served with a miso-soy aioli would please even the most pretentious Maryland crab cake eaters. 89 Hana Hwy, Paia, 579-8742. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$9.50

Manana Garage (Corn Bread) Good corn bread is fluffy in texture and creamy in taste. Manana Garage’s version is better than you can imagine. It’s fluffy as a sponge cake with pieces of corn and jalapenos. What’s best is they dish it up in large portions and serve it with plenty of butter slices. Top shelf margaritas are just the thing to wash it down. 33 Lono St., Kahului, 873-0220. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$3 Manana Garage

Kahale’s Beach Club (bar food) Bar food is the quintessential meal for a perfect afternoon or evening spent performing excess consumption. In fact, a good pile of wings can easily right your head’s sideways spinning. And they pair perfectly with beer. At Kahale’s, you’ll find fries, wings, poppers, shrimp and chips, taquitos… basically everything you could possibly dream of eating while you have a buzz. 36 Keala Pl., Kihei, 875-7711. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$1-$6

(Chicken Avocado Soup) This chicken soup made me realize that—even beyond Campbell’s—indeed, soup is good food. Not your boring standby chicken noodle in a can, Horhito’s Chicken Avo soup will make you long for the Mexican grandmother you never had, to tend to you when you’re feeling under the weather. It sounds simple enough: a flavorful house broth with boneless, skinless, shredded chicken breast, half an avocado and sliced scallions. But it’s so good, you might want to pretend you’ve got a cold just so a friend will take pity on you and bring you some. Not that I would ever do that—I’m just saying… 41 E. Hula Grill (Crab & Macadamia Nut Wontons) You get a small steamer bowl with five wontons—no more and no less. They’re fluffy and crabby on the inside and crunchy on the outside—just like life. Oh, and that innocentlooking bowl of shoyu/spicy mustard dressing they give you on the side? It’s tasty, but it will make the inside of your face feel like it’s on fire if you dunk your wonton in too deep. We like to add a dollop of coleslaw, too, but really, they’re perfect on their own. Even on your budget, you can load up on them like they were White Castle burgers. MaLa (Mark’s Caesar Salad) The ancient Romans, who spoke Latin, would not have pronounced the word “Caesar” as we do today, which is something like “seezer.” Instead, they would have pronounced it the way we say “kaisar,” which is in fact where that word came from. I actually thought of these things as I recently ate this great salad—which also comes with four crispy pita triangles. As to how the Romans said the word “pita,” historians still haven’t come up with a definite answer. 1307 Front St., Lahaina, 667-9394. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$9

Charley’s Restaurant (The Famous Woofer) Willie Nelson’s patronage is not the only thing famous about the Charley P. Woofer Restaurant & Saloon. It is also home to the Famous Woofer—a half-pound burger made from fresh, grilled, Maui-bred beef. It comes on a monstrous sesame bun with the requisite LTO (lettuce, tomato and onion), as well as your choice of French fries or coleslaw. You can also get cheese or substitute your bun for the whole-wheat option for another buck. Although if you’re already ordering a halfpound of beef, I don’t know why you’d bother with a wholewheat bun. South Shore Tiki Lounge (Sausage Sandwich) There are so many to choose from: Bratwurst, Kielbasa, Portuguese, Hot Italian, Andouille, Chicken MangoHabanero—I mean, the list goes on and on. You see, the Tiki Lounge was once the home of the Sausage Shack and has wisely decided to keep that sausagephilia alive and well. All of Tiki Lounge’s hand-made, very lean gourmet sausage sandwiches on toasted hoagies are well under $10. And at that price, you can afford to do a side, too, like BBQ beans, fries, salad or a corn dog. What? C’mon, a corn dog can be a side! 1913 S. PIZZA Fish & Game Brewing Co. (BBQ Chicken Pizza) Yes, I know it’s technically neither fish nor game—I have heard of hunting chickens, though it’s not one of your more thrilling sports—but it’s a good pizza that tastes great. (Margherita Pizza) My favorite kind of pizza is simple and fresh. No cheesestuffed crust pizza for me, thanks. No squid, shrimp, tuna, broccoli, onion, mayonnaise and double cheese toppings either (“The Seafood Special” at a Pizza Hut in Japan). No, just give me an authentic wood-fired pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil. Casanova has other fabulous Italian entrees but their perfect 12-inch cheese pie is the comfort food I sometimes need on chilly, late upcountry nights. 1188 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 572-0220. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$10

Ale House (Chicken Club Wrap) The Kahului Ale House is a male air-conditioned haven of TV screens large and small, pool tables, video games, basketball, food, liquor and nightly entertainment. The only thing missing are those computer trivia games you can play at your table. There are plenty of items on the menu for less than $10, but I’m convinced the best are the wraps. You can get a chicken club, veggie or pork wrap and they come with fries or coleslaw. The wraps come stuffed with fresh greens, juicy tomatoes and dressings and they hit the spot. They’re also low on carbs—that is, if you order them without the fries. 355 E. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului, 877-9001. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$9.95

Ba-Le (Sandwich) The French took over Vietnam in the late 1800s and held it for nearly a century. They were forced out of the country in 1954, but an unusual reminder of their nasty imperialistic ways lives on in fabulous French Vietnamese cuisine. For example, Ba-Le’s sandwiches, which bring fine French bakery rolls and croissants together with tasty Vietnamese pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro, sliced cucumber and onion on top of your choice of protein. Vietnamese favorites like lemongrass chicken, tofu and char siu sit side by side with French standards like roast beef, pate and ham. 260 Dairy Rd, Kahului, 877-2400; Lahaina Cannery Mall, 661-5566. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$5

Ruth’s Chris Steak House (Sides) It would be difficult not to eat beef when you go to Ruth’s Chris, but if you’re vegetarian or on a smaller-than-petitefilet-sized budget, their sides are the way to go. Sam Sohn is not only a master sushi chef, he’s an infectiously fun host with a rockstar appeal. And you can always be sure to get the freshest, most creative and dazzling-to-behold plates of raw delicacies. (Chile Queso) I have a vegetarian friend who’s always broke and likes to drink margaritas. We go here ‘cuz she gets to eat and drink big, and for under $10. The Chile Queso is a feast of mushrooms, green chiles, onions and tomatoes, topped with Cheddar and Jack cheeses and served with six flour tortillas. And if you want the veggie blend sautéed with tofu, it’s only a dollar more. Plus, if you sit at the bar, you’re bound to get some free entertainment in the form of local stories, jokes and banter. Just make sure you’re not the event du jour— those margs can incite even the meekest of wallflowers. 1202 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 572-7808. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$8.95

Archie’s (Nabeyaki Udon) This is the ultimate in Japanese comfort food. Thick Japanese noodles, Udon, sit in a clear steaming broth that’s served in a cast iron mini kettle. They’re mixed in with a generous helping of crisp broccoli, carrots, cabbage, green onion, green beans and zucchini. Then there’s the protein: tofu, fish cake, chicken and a delicious tempura shrimp. Japanese chef Hifumi Tanaka, the wife of the late Archie himself, runs a tight-ship. She’s kept the cuisine consistent over the years, billing it as “ethnic Japanese with a local style.” As for the Nabeyaki, Tanaka’s daughter Margie says simply, “People say it is better than you would find in Japan.” 1440 Lower Main St., Wailuku, 244-9401. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$8.95

It’s all packaged with sides and rice and ready to go. 15 Makawao Ave., Pukalani, 572-7616. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$3.50-5.75

Curry-in-a-Hurry (Eggplant and Pastry)

Lynne’s Café (California Roll)

Everything at this little vegetarian take-out café—okay, it’s more of a kiosk—is simply wonderful. But the Eggplant and Pastry is a bit different—think of it as an Indian Pop-Tart, except with eggplant instead of cherry filling. The Basmati rice is also quite good, though that will cost extra. Located in the Lahaina Square shopping center, 661-4370. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$5.95

When I first came into Lynne’s Café I couldn’t believe her prices. But the café aims to feed the Haiku crowds in a simple, unassuming atmosphere. Somewhere along the line, they forgot to price gouge their customers. You can find lots of reasonable noodle dishes, sandwiches, salads, sushi and local food for under $5. Her California roll is no frills but all good, with avo, imitation crab and cuke, then rolled in nori and rice. You won’t find a better deal. 810 Kokomo Rd., Haiku, 575-9363. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$3.50

L&L Drive Inn (BBQ Chicken Mini Plate) When in need of a cheap plate lunch it’s hard to beat L&L. They have all the favorites when it comes to local food, but their BBQ chicken is at the top of the list. Flavors of sweet soy, garlic and ginger mingle with mac salad and sticky white rice. The mini plate has one scoop less rice and a bit less meat, but the servings are still huge. You can’t go wrong for only $4.35, and the Tabasco is free. Pi’ilani Village Shopping Center, Kihei, 875-8898; Wailuku Town Center, 242-1380; Maui Marketplace, Kahului, 873-0323; Lahaina Cannery Mall, 661-9888. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$4.35

Kahuna Kabobs (No Ka Oi Chicken Kabobs) None of the kabobs go for more than $10. You can get them with tofu, chicken, fish, steak or shrimp and they’re served with white or brown rice and the Kahuna’s original potato/mac salad. For a little extra you can exchange the white rice with pineapple fried rice, Molokai mashed potatoes or veggies. The unique menu is always evolving and includes wraps, soups, burgers, a house salad, “island-style” curry and shaved ice with nothing to break a small budget. Lahaina Marketplace on the corner of Front St. and Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 661-9999. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$6.95 Fiesta Time (Mushroom Quesadillas) You can never go wrong with a quesadilla. The trick here is that they fold sliced mushrooms into the cheese. It’s simple and satisfying. Get the combo that comes with rice and beans—you won’t regret it. 1132 Lower Main, Wailuku, 2498463; 300 Ma’alaea Rd., 244-5862. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$7.50

Café des Amis (Brie & Avocado with Apple and Black Pepper Crepe) Ooh la la! Le crepe! There are sweet crepes and there are savory crepes but if you want a little of both, check out this unique combo: a thin, light, delicate pancake filled with rich brie, creamy avocado, tart green apple and a dollop of sour cream! C’est bon! It also comes with a house salad of mixed field greens. Beret and faux accent not included. 42 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-6323. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$8.50

Roy’s

DESSERT Roy’s (Chocolate Souffle) Dessert for dinner? Whatever, I’ve done it before. And when you get a three-inch round, crisp chocolate cake chamber filled with hot, dark molten chocolate that spills out onto your plate, seductively saturating everything in its path, what else could you need? And hey, it’s got all your important food groups: dairy (Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream), fruit (raspberry puree), veggie (mint sprig) and chocolate! Yes, it’s true—women are cuckoo for chocolate. But everyone—male, female and Rush Limbaugh—will love this chocolate soufflé! A la mode is an additional $1.50. 4405 Honoapiilani Hwy., Kahana, 669-6999; 303 Piikea Ave., Kihei, 891-1120. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$7

EMPLOYEE OF THE

WEEK A S T O L D T O K E L LY C H A M B E R S

Kasey Alexander Barista, Starbucks at Maui Marketplace I’ve been working at Starbucks for seven months. My sister works here, too. It’s fun, we get to spend more time together. Before I worked here, I used to come and spend seven bucks on coffee every morning before going to work at Valley Isle Lighting. Now I work here and I love it. I love to meet people. And I love coffee. Everyone loves coffee. We have a lot of daily customers and it gets to the point where we have their drink ready before they’re though the door. You gotta know: who’s the day people, who’s the night people. Then there’s the customers who test us. They make their drinks hard to check our knowledge and see if we do it right: “Can I get a triple decaf venti, six pumps of vanilla, soy milk extra foam latte? Oh yes, with whipped cream.” You know, something really odd. But they’re paying a lot for their coffee, they want it exactly how they want it. Like me, I like things neat. My pet peeve is wetness. Walking on wet floors, working around wet areas. I hate messy and if something is wet then something else can get wet. I’m a neat freak. I like to present things neatly. I do it at work and home. If someone at work spills coffee, I clean it before I make the next drink. Neatness is very important. My favorite quote is “beauty is internal.” Still, you have to keep it neat. I like to make scrapbooks, too. You get to make your own design with the photos. It’s a good time to think, reflect, to be alone. And then you can share, and reflect your feelings and your life with the scrapbook. I do that on my days off. Maui Marketplace is the first Starbucks that opened here. Not there are seven Starbucks on Maui. The expansion, I think, is a good thing. We have people who come in here to study school, to do work, even bible study. Everyone needs to drink coffee and it’s a good place to be. MTW

Art in Action Saturday, 7 p.m. at the Green House, Haiku [ART] Local artist Alesha Rogness believes that “art is not just something that hangs on the wall.” A new art center called The Green House Project seeks to prove that idea. Located in green, vibrant and lush Haiku, The Green House exudes the unique artistic interaction that exemplifies the community. The large green house is poised on a hilltop alongside a deep gulch containing a thick bamboo forest and bird sanctuary. The serenity and powerful mana is inspiring, to say the least. I walked inside one recent, moonlit night, hearing little more than the rustling of bamboo. The big green front deck seems to welcome visitors into its main display room. There sit colorful and provocative art installations, paintings and the enthusiastic artists who created them. It is to be an eclectic place for the arts, a home for local artists to display and market their talents. There will be performances, original paintings, hand-blown glass and sculpture. “The Green House Project is united in creating a model for the future we wish to see in our community,” says its leader Gail Burton. Think of The Green House Project’s events as art parties where people can interact with the artists and each other, learning in a fun, social environment surrounded by striking natural beauty. Put another way, The Green House Project creators hope to show the connection between art and the Earth’s own creative energies. And that includes the culinary arts—David Wilcox will prepare elaborate cuisine using organic and local ingredients for The Green House Project’s events. The goal is to have a mix of people and food from all over the world at the same table. The upcoming grand opening and Art in Action event will include sculptures and paintings from Vincent Goudreau and Javier Martinez. There will be a video project by the Colaborynths—Ari Makridakis and Jonathan Warner. The poet Rhonda Moore will share her work alongside others offering lampwork, airbrush art and jewelry. “[It’s] a place to interact, ask questions and contribute to the whole event,” said Rogness of MUSE Productions. “It is not a stale gallery opening but an interactive event.” [JOE GATTO] A $10 minimum donation includes an evening with the art show, a sushi reception, interactive multimedia, poetry and music. Call 572-2794 to RSVP or for directions.

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Blue Marlin Shootout! Saturday, 6 a.m.-4 p.m. out of Lahaina Harbor [FISHING] By far the best Cheap Seats episode yet is the one that rips apart Steve Garvey’s 1990 Celebrity Billfish Tournament that he ran out of Kona. But now you can have your own billfish (it’s just another name for Blue Marlin—don’t ask me why) tourney by waking up at the crack of dawn and heading out as part of the 2nd Annual Black & Blue Stripped Shootout, Hawaii State Championship. The best part is you don’t have to worry about Garvey strutting around your boat in indecently short shorts. This is the real deal—no black, blue or striped Marlin weighing less than 100 pounds will be accepted! You can fish anywhere in the state of Hawaii. Last year’s winner reeled in 499.4-pound fish off the southwest corner of Lanai. And all it takes is some good fishing gear, a solid boat and a $1,000 entry fee. For more information visit www.bluemarlinshootout.com. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Watching the Stars, Under the Stars Friday, 5:30 p.m., Maui Community College [FILM] Seriously, there is no better place to watch a movie than under a nighttime sky, with a balmy tropical breeze and your loved one—or a slab of barbequed ribs, whichever—to keep you warm. MauiFest Hawaii’s Drive-In triple billing this time starts with Spiderman 2 (around 6:45 p.m.), followed by Academy Award-winning Ray and Aloha Classic Windsurfing Cinema. Food booths from Sam Sushi, Pulehu BBQ and others will be available for movie-time munching. Live music before and during intermissions. Admission is $20 per car, with up to four adults. Keiki 10 and under get in free.

THURSDAY

It’s the Bombdiggitty! Saturday, 4 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater [MUSIC] This is Maui’s biggest concert featuring the latest and greatest in local reggae and contemporary Hawaiian music. You may have heard of the term Jahwaiian? Yeah, there’s a lot of that here. This year’s fest will include B.E.T., Ekolu, Ho‘onu‘a, Opihi Pickers, Maui Style Crew (Zacc Kekona, Pi‘ilani Arias, Kaiana, Pito)—you want more? I think that’s enough already! Go get your tickets ($20 in advance, $23 day of show) now or call 242-7469.

Pro Windsurfing Monday, 11 a.m. at Ho’okipa Beach Park [WINDSURFING] We’ve all seen the pretty sails and surfers flying about at Ho’okipa Beach. It’s like the most famous windsurfing beach in the world. That’s what steady Pacific swells combined with steady 10-25-knot tradewinds will do for you. Guess that’s why they’re holding the Jeep Hawaii Pro there—top windsurfing contest requires the top beach. It’s what Professional Windsurfers Association event organizer Rich Foster calls “a highly competitive environment.” In other words, you’ve got the finest windsurfers anywhere—many of whom live on the North Shore—just itching for that top slot. The Pritchard brothers will be there—Matt and Kevin—as well as a host of other guys who call Maui home. You can check daily highlights online at www.high.tv as well as event results at www.pwaworldtour.com. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Easter Fun Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Lahaina Cannery Mall [FAMILY] Itching to dye some eggs and eat lots of pink marshmallow chickens? I know I am! So I’ll be heading to the mall, where I’ll have to wrestle some kids for a seat at the crafts table with Holy Innocents PreSchool, dash over to sit up front at the magic show with Kenn Serrano, and cut in line to get my picture taken with the Easter Bunny. Hey, it makes for great Christmas cards! Plus, they give the kids free bunny ears, which I will then have to take from them. You know, it’s all about the bunny ears. Plus, Jolie the Clown will be doing clown things, and Keiki Hula with Te Tiare Patitifa performs at 1 p.m. There’s even special Easter baskets to be given away. Hey, I’m special! Pick me! Pick me!

screen like a dried egg on day old toast. At 115 minutes, the dragging movie could have used some speeding up in more than a few places. “There’s a cannon in my porthole” is a genuinely funny line that William Shatner gives during an underwater scene in the hull of a pirate ship at Las Vegas’ Treasure Island Hotel. It’s an example of a simple piece of offhand humor that Shatner snaps into colorful life with nothing but inflection and comic intentionality. He’s not even onscreen when he says it. For the tiny part that William Shatner has to work with the actor forever associated as Star Trek’s Captain Kirk adds a spicy flavor to an otherwise bland setting. Armed and Fabulous shows itself as trying too hard to generate an overriding theme when Gracie Hart shows up in an elementary school classroom to impart the value she places on “world peace.” In a Gene Wilder picture you might have imagined “whirled peas” as something so far-fetched and amusing that you’d have to go on repeating it for days just to scratch the itch of a laugh you felt simmering beneath his deadpan delivery of something so bizarre. That intrusive memory might then have adjusted into a realization that what he really meant was “world peace.” But they don’t make many hilarious comedies like Gene Wilder’s Stir Crazy or Silver Streak anymore. MOVIECAPSULES BE COOL – (PG13) – Crime/Comedy – In this longawaited sequel to Get Shorty, debt collector-turned movie producer Chili Palmer (John Travolta) turns into a music producer and decides to promote a struggling singer who’s also being chased by the Russian Mafya. Also stars Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Danny DeVito and the rest.

MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CINEMA Wednesday March 23 A Love Song for Bobby Long 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater The stunningly charismatic, Golden Globe-nominated Scarlett Johansson gives Academy Award winner John Travolta and Gabriel Macht a run for their money in this subtly wonderful character drama. Set in New Orleans and "basted" in a cinematic jambalaya of enchanting personal quirkiness and great Cajun music, Johansson plays a young woman who must deal with her mother's former tenants when all three inherit her family home. "Travolta gives a poignant, intelligent performance and Scarlett Johansson lights up the screen!" (NBC-TV). Rated R. 119 min.

New This Week GUESS WHO – (PG-13) – Comedy – Bernie Mac plays a sarcastic dad who’s less than pleased that his daughter wants to marry some white dude played by Ashton Kutcher. Now, I know it sounds dumb, but if you… ah, who am I kidding. MISS CONGENIALITY 2 – (PG13) – Comedy – Goofy cute chicks rule! Like, Sandra Bullock for instance, who’s reprising her role as an FBI agent this time going undercover as a Las Vegas showgirl. Julia Roberts used to be cute and goofy, too, before she got all gaunt and sophisticated. But she’s not in this one anyway, so nevermind. See Film Critique.

Now Showing ARE WE THERE YET? – (PG) – Romantic Comedy – Ice Cube stars in this light-hearted look at how a swinging bachelor takes his girlfriend’s kids on a road trip to impress her, but finds that they really only want to turn his life into a living hell. How do they come up with this stuff?

CONSTANTINE – (R) – Action-Adventure, Suspense, Horror and Thriller – As our astute intern puts it, this film looks like a cross between The Matrix and Devil’s Advocate. We love that good vs. evil, Heaven and Hell stuff! Plus, it’s got beautiful Kauai-boy Keanu Reeves playing the tortured investigator of supernatural mysteries and hottie Rachel Weisz as... well, who cares. CURSED – (PG13) – Action-Adventure, Suspense, Horror – What’s up with this sudden rash of popular actors and actresses trying to get in on the latest horror flick? Aren’t they supposed to leave that to the BListers?! This one’s starring Christina Ricci, some werewolves and an ancient curse, of course. Man, this better be good. Also stars James Brolin and Portia De Rossi. DREAMBOY - (NR) - Animation - Dreamboy and his friends make up one of the funniest and most interesting casts of animated characters ever to come out of a computer. Join them as they travel from outer space to the wild west--sure, why not. And there’s plenty of politically incorrect humor and cutting-edge computer animation. For ages 17 and up. HITCH – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – Will Smith plays a matchmaker who uses less than honest methods in his work—whahhhhh???!?!—and then gets busted by a totally hot undercover reporter played by Eva Mendes. Oh, and there’s a chick in the movie named after a popular antihistamine. HOSTAGE – (R) – Thriller – Bruce Willis stars as a hostage negotiator who bungles a case and then swears off hostage negotiation but then has to return to work when his own family is suddenly captured as part of even more delicate negotiations following the kidnapping of a mob accountant. Hmm, sounds like a

MAUI FILM FESTIVAL

Bruce Willis film to me. ICE PRINCESS – (G) – Romantic comedy - Don’t think this is another Ice Castles, people. It’s just another one of them formulaic, cute teen chick underdog battles against “the popular girls” to rise up the ranks and win... something. A trophy? The presidency? Oh yeah, self-esteem. Whoopee. We all know self-esteem gets you nowhere. Just look at Robert Blake! Stars Michelle Trachtenberg, Joan Cusack and Kim Cattrall. THE PACIFIER – (PG) – Action/Adventure, Comedy, Family – Vin Diesel stars as some Navy SEAL guy who has to protect—and baby-sit—five wild kids from the same killers who bumped off their scientist parent. Get it? He gets to take out the trash—both literally and figuratively! Who comes up with this stuff? THE RING 2 – (PG13) – Horror – That same hot blonde from the first Ring flick (Naomi Watts) and her daughter are in this one, and they’re still being terrorized by a VHS tape that kills people, but this movie is actually totally new. First of all, it takes place six months after the original Ring, and it’s in a completely different town. Also stars David Dorfman and Sissy Spacek, who I guess is having hard times and is going back to her bread and butter horror work. ROBOTS – (PG) – Animation, Sci-Fi, Comedy – This computer-generated cartoon details a world populated by robots. Yes, I know it sounds fantastic and even a bit childish, but really, this place actually exists! And I’ve been there! No, I swear—what? No, I haven’t taken my meds, yet. Anyway, it features the voices of Mel Brooks, Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear and, of course, Robin Williams. SIDEWAYS – (R) – Comedy, Drama – This could be your typical road-tripping buddy flick, only the “buddies” in question are Miles (Paul Giamatti)—a downand-out failed novelist, middle school teacher and bitter divorcee but apt wine connoisseur—and his happygo-lucky friend Jack (Thomas Hayden Church), who has his own devious agenda for their big “wine tasting trip” before he gets married the following weekend. Also stars Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh.

The Austin, Texas based trio (two members hail from the Big Island) play insanely frenzied sets full of explosive noise and attitude. It’s not just a tempered display of pent-up aggression either, but an honest glimpse at talented musicians. Worlds Apart, the follow-up to 2002’s highly acclaimed Source Tags and Codes, transfers this live energy into beautiful, massive arrangements and stunning melodies. Trail of Dead succeeds in the balance of anger and tranquility, with singer Conrad moving from raw punk fury to polished swells of emotion. This album will grab you by the throat and force you to sing, “I know the best will fall and the rest will all follow.” —Interscope Records 2005 [SHAUNNA KEOUGH]

“BABYLON” From the ashes of the legendary reggae-metal band Dub War, Skindred fuses metal, dancehall, punk and drum & bass into incendiary thought grenades. Imagine the Bad Brains in a battle of the bands with Faith No More and you would be close. Benji’s rapid-fire vocal delivery, with its heavy Jamaican patois, stops and stutters, screams and roars; from a whispering threat to a bellowing howl, just when you think he is out of syllables, out comes another barrage. The guitars are a battery of noises, whammy-pedal histrionics and death metal power chords that punctuate the dub-style bass playing and the busy-as-hell drumming, making up one of the most original and exciting records that I’ve heard. —Lava Records 2004 [STEPHEN R. HART]

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE “LULLABIES TO PARALYZE” I’ll admit it. When I was growing up in the surprisingly heavy rock scene of the golf course laden lands of Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra otherwise known as Palm Springs, I used to make fun of the local band of Queens’ origins, Kyuss. Back then I thought a rock band of my peers who took themselves so seriously was déclassé. Over the years, as I’ve followed the sonic successes of vocalist/bassist Josh Homme and guitarist Nick Oliveri, I’ve been forced to eat my words; their first and second albums kicked ass. Majorly. But on their latest album, Lullabies to Paralyze, I was a little worried: Oliveri was gone. Yet as soon as I heard Homme’s characteristically cool drawl and explosive riffs on dark yet oddly catchy songs like “Everybody Knows That You’re Insane” and “Little Sister,” I was assuaged. Lullabies… does paralyze with edgy, slow-burning rock. But it also seems to get a little sleepy towards the end. — Interscope Records 2005 [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

AVAIL “FRONT PORCH STORIES” When I was a kid, my mom would leave me at my grandparents’ house from time to time. My grandpappy would welcome me from his rockin’ chair on the front porch with his “summer tooth” smile (some teeth here, some teeth there) and a glass pitcher of freshly squeezed lemonade. We’d pass the time by swapping stories. He’d tell details of the trials and tribulations of owning a dairy farm. I’d tell him how I fooled around with a girl on the school bus. We’d both giggle, but then he’d slap my head with a horseshoe or anything he could get his hands on. Don’t worry, my grandpappy didn’t hit me that hard—well, not as nearly as hard as Avail’s Front Porch Stories. Maybe some stories are best untold. —Fat Wreck Records 2002 [$AYFOO] Got Music? We say and hear the words all the time. Stylish. Trendy. Fashionable. But what do we really mean by them? What makes one skirt “fashionable” and another “hideous?” Does fashionable have to be expensive? And does fashion really matter anyway around here, where slippers and board shorts never seem to go out of style? In fact, Maui has a rich connection to the world of fashion. There are great designers right here—some big, some not so much—and they’re creating new, colorful, sexy stuff right now. So relax and enjoy our look at some of Maui’s most interesting designers. After all, it’s the fashionable thing to do.

SIGNLANGUAGE ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

The things we do for love. Okay, this week someone you love is asking you to do some pretty weird shit, or at least stuff that’s totally out of character for you—like behaving. But of course, though, pleasing other people is in character for you, even if it means doing things you’d never consider on your own. Please don’t resent the one you adore for making such strange or annoying requests—everybody knows just how much s/he does for you, without you even asking. Just indulge those odd moods and whims; it won’t kill you, and (once again) proving your love and devotion is by no means a bad thing.

“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Say it. Say it: “I love you.” Yeah, sure, you’ve said it before, but you haven’t said it often enough lately. Expressing your feelings is important this week. Don’t be stingy about it, regardless of the issues and complexities currently surrounding your relationship. I don’t care if it’s always you who has to open the doors when they get shut (whether by accident or on purpose). That may simply be your role here. These things are never perfectly balanced, or they balance in ways that aren’t quite so linear and obvious. So just say it, already. Things will feel a thousand times better once you do.

Jason Meyer 573-1920

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

AD DEADLINE

No one’s actually dragging their feet. It may feel that way, but resist jumping to that conclusion while you endure this week’s frequent and irksome delays. Those you’re communicating with may seem reluctant to help you or give you answers, but that’s only because you don’t know what’s really going on at their end. Things are just taking longer than usual. It’s not ill will you’re dealing with, it’s more something akin to metaphysical molasses. Be patient throughout the week, before you say or do something you’ll be embarrassed by later. Give folks the benefit of the doubt. They will slog through the astrological resistance and get back to you… eventually.

Application Packets to participate are available now. The application deadline is April 15, 2005

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Share your love and talents at Camp Imua this year! Contact: Imua Family Services 95 Mahalani Street, Suite 19-A, Wailuku, HI 96793 (808) 244-7467 x152 • campimua@hawaii.rr.com

The door you opened (or project you began) about two weeks ago is about to come to the attention of the people you tried (consciously or unconsciously) to hide it from. Things could go either way, now. They might choose to stomp your efforts into mush, or they could help you finish what you started. Three factors influence their decision, two of which you have no control over: the nature of the path or project, and their individual characters. Therefore, concentrate on the third—how you present what you’re up to. This could make all the difference. These folks are either buying it or destroying it. So don’t let your actions simply speak for themselves. Open your mouth and sell them, hard.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Things ought to be pretty good this week. Not fantastic, or mind-blowing, but “excellent” might be an appropriate description. Remember to notice! This winter’s had you focusing an awful lot on the negative aspects of what’s going on, despite your innate natural optimism, so much so that you’ve developed a bad habit of not noticing when things are going more or less okay. You’re healthy, content, something didn’t go wrong that could have, etc. Just pay attention. In the grand scheme, you may not even remember this week in a few years, because nothing incredibly significant is likely to happen, but that doesn’t mean you can’t truly enjoy it now. Please try.

If not now, when?

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You’re a bee who has fallen asleep in a flower. You worked your butt off to find the biggest, juiciest, most beautiful bloom in the garden, then you took a roll in the pollen and passed out, somehow forgetting that there’s this whole second half to your job. Wake up! There are two good reasons for properly completing the task you set out to do: 1. You’ve already done the hard part. You know what comes next, and even though it’s a lot of busy work, none of it is especially difficult (and there’s honey at the end of the day). 2. The lawnmower’s coming.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

244-0443 • www.mauirecycles.com

Being torn is an awfully familiar state for you poor Librans, isn’t it? I can’t remember the last time you weren’t of two minds about something. But nevertheless, this week’s internal dilemma will probably feel fairly unfamiliar and new: negotiating the conflict between your needs and the needs of your friends, lover(s), and family. You might even resent them for even having desires, now that it seems like helping them out means neglecting your own. That’s totally understandable, but resist it anyway. Try to remember that what’s good for those you love is good for you— really and directly, not just in some New Agey karmic kind of way. Yep, I’m helping you decide. Give your sweethearts a hand, at your own expense if necessary. Trust me, they need you more than you need you, at the moment.

MAILING

What happened over the winter that you still haven’t dealt with? Your relationship(s) have been more or less screwed up because of it, but you still haven’t addressed the issue because it’s never felt like the “right time.” Forget that. While you’ve waited, the real feelings surrounding the crap that went down have begun to fade and warp, replaced by twisted, tangled stuff that comes from your head, not your heart. This shit is a lot harder to straighten out and resolve. Stop the trend. Get to work on the messy knots that have already formed, this week, regardless of what else is going on.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

658 Front Street

Like a massive five-mile train slowly lurching into forward motion, so are your plans. Even though you started stoking the engines ages ago, you’d begun to despair about the lack of movement, and wonder if you’d just burnt gallons of fuel in vain. Actually, you simply had tons of inertia to overcome. This week you should see the slow beginnings of some real progress. Be patient. It takes a while for big trains and big plans to pick up momentum. Luckily, there are almost no station-stops between here and your destination. Once you get up to speed, you’ll close the distance faster than sound.

#126A-7278

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Accept every invitation you get this week, and crash at least one party. It would be a shame to waste the pheromones you’re putting out. You’re radiating some kind of subtle subconscious signal for people to love you, to make deals with you, or to screw you (and not screw you over). Why ever would you waste this kind of influence by staying home alone? Make your beauty (whatever form it takes) work for you, because it can this week. It’s a goddamn indefatigable Clydesdale. The only limit to how far you can take it is how far you’re willing to go.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Being a Pisces—the mysterious chameleon of the zodiac—can be bewildering, I know. You’re so multitalented, but those abilities aren’t necessarily very consistent. Sometimes something’s incredibly easy for you—as simple as drawing breath—and then the same exact thing can be horribly difficult the next time you try it. It’s very hard to predict what’ll work when. That’s where I come in. This week’s advice? Be a social butterfly, especially during the last few days of the month. Flirtation’s your current most-active superpower. Don’t waste time with solemn solo contemplation; other people, that’s where it’s at. See where your natural charm will take you. I’m wagering it’s pretty far.

How powerful are you? Sometimes you hide from yourself the degree of influence, control and sheer bloody might that you wield. Maybe it frightens or discomfits you. It certainly scares the hell out of some of the people who know you. However, you of all people should know that refusing to “know thyself” is a bad choice, especially for those as potentially dangerous as you can be. This week, become aware of the different kinds, and degrees, of power that you possess and use, because you may soon have to choose which tools (or “weapons”) you’ll put down, and which new ones you’ll pick up; a decision that should be easy—provided you know exactly which ones you already have.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Where, Oh Where Has My Mojo Gone? I don’t know how it happened or why. But sometime over the last couple weeks, I’ve lost my mojo. I’ve become invisible to the opposite sex. Strange men have ceased to hit on me. I don’t have my game on. And I can’t figure out how to get it back. The problem has perplexed me so much that I’ve started doing what any normal single girl would do in this situation. I blame men. According to a Top Dating Tips Readers Poll from 2004, most men are attracted to the “modern career girl” and the “home-loving girl-next-door.” Modern career girl? What the hell does that mean, anyways? Here’s something else: the “free-spirited hippy chick” came in a close third. I’m doomed. I’ve been talking to my more testosterone-influenced amigos in trying to decipher their particular rules of attraction, as it were. How do they flirt? What makes them attracted to certain women? Under what conditions do they approach? And what are they thinking as they’re doing it?! Most of my male pals rely on the standard flirtation game: across-the-room stolen glances, eventually holding eye contact until their hopeful outcome—a coy smile or knowing wink from the flirtee—sends them scurrying closer to initial contact. But how do they survive their make-or-break intro? Like many men, one friend I know uses humor as his icebreaker. But it doesn’t always work. In his case, especially if he considers the chick to be a total bombshell, it can become downright painful. “It’s like falling off a cliff,” he said. “And I’ve hit dork-rock bottom. I walk away knowing she’s wondering why she ever smiled at me in the first place.” But other guys have different strategies to, as they say, close the deal. “I look for the one quality that she probably hates the most about herself,” said another guy friend. “And then I complement her on it—hey, imperfections are sexy. And then I’m so in there.” “It’s the same as fishing,” said yet another sage pal. “You give line, you take line, you give line, you take line—then you pull ‘em in the boat, hit ‘em over the head and take ‘em home.” At the same time, the patterns of attraction and routines we think are working for us might actually be what’s holding some of us back. One guy told me about a time he had met a goodlooking woman whom he wasn’t immediately interested in. But when the woman went on stage to perform, he suddenly found himself insanely attracted to her. He began looking around at all the women he had previously dismissed as not being his “type” and wondered if they had similar treasures to unlock. It opened up a whole new world for him. That’s all great and everything but it doesn’t help me with my current dilemma. Why aren’t the dudes talking to me? “Maybe you’re putting out that ‘I’ve lost my mojo’ aura,’” said one friend. “You don’t look dumb enough,” said another. “You’d be too much of a challenge.” “Nobody wants to talk to reporters,” said some other supposed pal. Right. Obviously, I’m going to have to get a bit more creative. Maybe I should join a club or take up a new hobby. I’m definitely going to have to do a lot more yoga and meditate on this. “So what are you going to do today?” asked yet another chum. “You know, besides standing on the street corner, naked, holding a sign?” Smarmy jerk. But maybe that is a good idea. MTW
