A: I have no idea. Not a day goes by that we don’t ask ourselves the same question. “What did all these shmoes do without us way back when?” I asked just this morning. We all just stood there and shook our heads.

Q: Who was a better British Prime Minister—Benjamin Disraeli or William Gladstone?

A: Tough call. Both were excellent administrators for Queen Victoria, but Gladstone is probably the better of the two. Sure, Disraeli’s Factory Act and Climbing Boys Act made working life easier, but Gladstone brought about the secret ballot to protect voters, campaign spending limits and a broadening of voter rolls to including working class men. He even tried to get the government to accept Irish Home Rule, but that was a bit much to ask of Victorian Parliament. Plus, Gladstone got more tail.

Q: What should I do this weekend?

A: Hold on, let me ask Sam. “Hey Sam! Some guy wants to know what to do this weekend! Sam! Oh, she’s not here? Well, where the hell is she? Yes, this is important.

What do you mean she got the day off? I don’t remember—oh wait, yes I do. Never mind.”

Yeah, Sam’s not here. Why don’t you just consult our outstanding calendar section? It’s got everything—even resort shows! You know, if you’re into that sort of thing. Not that there’s anything wrong with it.

Q: Is journalism hard?

A: Hell no. I mean, if you’re honest and diligent about it, I suppose it can be pretty tough, but for many papers it’s just a matter of reprinting press releases. Their toughest call is making sure they have an equal number of grip-’n-grin photos (corporate exec shaking another corporate exec’s hand) and peopleholding-novelty-sized-check photos (corporation donates money to local non-profit). And if you get stuck for stories, you just fall back on that old journalistic standby: If you don’t know, just make it up! MTW

You see, your Ford F-150 had trash blowing from the bed all the way from the Westside to Kahului. And you hit all the good spots—Puamana, Guardrails, Olowalu, even Toilet Bowls. A ridiculous amount of trash spilled out of your truck. Then, when we passed Thousand Peaks and the trade winds came howling through, I was sure you were going to pull over and batten down the hatches. But NO! You kept on truckin’ so McGregor’s and Ma’alaea could take a licking. Funny thing was that you had “Live Aloha,” “D.A.R.E.” and “Honor Roll” stickers over your bumper. But the one that really motivated me to write in had to be the “In Deep Surfboards” sticker. Dude: you surf, have kids, work and aspire to live aloha. Wake up! Stop letting your trash blow everywhere! Either that or get some new bumper stickers.

“Level the Playing Field’

Another reason to worry about crushing cars at Kanaha Mike Kitagawa’s proposal to put a car crushing and storage facility next to the Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary is fast becoming an explosive issue.

Literally.

Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Department of Land and Natural Resources Division, among other state and federal agencies, have already gone on record saying that crushing cars could harm the sensitive Kanaha Pond (see “The Big Squeeze,” Apr. 7). Now add the Maui County Department of Fire and Safety to that list.

The fire department’s mission is to protect life, environment and property.

According to official comments filed with the county on the Kitagawa proposal, the site presents a potential threat to all three.

Then there was the way the Ocean Bar staff would stow open bottles of wine with the beer kegs in the undercounter refrigerator. And who could forget the “moldy flat of mushrooms” noted in the vegetable refrigeration room. Very luxurious indeed.

What fire officials are afraid of removed,” wrote Captain Val Martin. One of Martin’s biggest concerns is that the fuel load of upholstery and interior plastics are more than enough to maintain and spread a fire throughout the stored vehicles.

“Brake fluid is a major concern due to its characteristics and its ability to spontaneously ignite when mixed with certain oxidizers,” Martin added. While Kitagawa plans on draining the fluids before crushing, residual fluids could be trapped in the lines and cavities when crushing begins.

Kitagawa has said he wants to do whatever it takes to address these and other environmental concerns about his application. He’s noted that there are two fire hydrants on an adjoining property and the equipment on-site will carry a fire extinguisher.

But if a fire occurs, Martin is also worried about contaminating the Kanaha Wildlife Sanctuary.

“All water used to fight a fire at this facility may eventually runoff into the protected wildlife area,” he wrote. “This runoff water may include residual contaminants such as motor oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc.”

Martin also worries that in the event of a fire, the prevailing trade winds will allow the smoke to travel to populated areas in the Kahului area.

“This is a serious health hazard and the smoke content will be more harmful to residents as compared to organic matter,” he wrote.

Fire Chief Carl Kaupalolo explains that we have to look carefully at the site’s proposed location.

“Not only is this property next to a pristine Wildlife Sanctuary,” he said, “it is in a high occupancy area.” High occupancy, to say the least: neighboring properties include The Gas Company storage facility, the Maui Oil Company office building and fuel dispensing facility, VIP Foods and an office building.

Demirbag told me that while he cannot control what happens around his facility, he’s also concerned about a possible explosion.

Currently, The Gas Company facility has two 210,000-gallon liquid propane tanks and four 30,000 gallon horizontal or bullet tanks on their property. They’re also planning to add six more 30,000-gallon bullet tanks.

“Kitagawa’s U-shaped property surrounds our storage tanks and building,” Demirbag told me. “The possibility of a fire is a great concern for our company.”

Some of the occupants of the office building fronting Kitagawa’s property are uneasy about their new neighbor as well. Ralph Sifford, who owns Second Wind Sail Surf and Kite, told me he’s nervous about having the crushing facility in such close proximity to his business and the neighboring retail space.

“This is my livelihood,” he said. “This building holds my inventory, my employees, and our future. Exposing the neighboring business owners and their employees to the risk of a fire is not right.”

While Maui desperately needs a facility to deal with abandoned cars and appliances, it’s becoming clear that the lot directly adjacent to the Kanaha Wildlife Sanctuary and many local businesses is a bad choice.

“I would like to suggest that a different site be found that would limit the exposure of a fire to less populated areas,” Fire Captain Martin wrote.

“I would also like to suggest that a site be found that does not border a wildlife refuge or sanctuary.” MTW

Spend just a few hours behind a bar—or a few minutes talking to someone who has—and you’ll get an earful of how arbitrary and even draconian the Maui County Liquor Rules can be. Performers can’t say naughty words on stage; customers can only dance inside the specially taped-off dancing zone; employee names on timesheets must be spelled out exactly as they appear on official county Liquor Control paperwork. A violation of any of those laws could bring thousands of dollars in fines or worse on the establishment.

For the last couple of months, the LC has been working on revising those rules. The extent won’t be known until they begin holding public hearings, but local liquor licensees and manufacturers wasted no time getting into the act.

Enter year-old Makawao-based Haleakala Distillers, which makes the GMOfree and vegan-friendly Mo’ Bettah Rum. On Mar. 14, 2005, company manager Harrison “Jim” Sargent wrote two letters to the Maui County Liquor Commission asking for a couple rule changes.

For a company that boasts on its website (www.haleakaladistillers.com) that it employs no attorneys, accountants or consultants—“Why have a bunch of ‘suits’ sucking resources out of the company when they have no impact whatsoever on its actual products?”—Sargent sure crafted a couple fine legal arguments that two provisions of the Maui County Liquor Rules—08-10111 and 08-101-22—are arbitrary and unfairly penalize locally owned spirits distillers.

Rule 101-11 makes it far easier and economical for “Fortune 500 companies, such as Anheuser Busch” to deliver booze than smaller, locally owned labels like Haleakala. Rule 101-22 prohibits spirits distillers from selling their products in “tasting rooms,” though it’s completely legal for beer and wine manufacturers to do so.

Being helpful, Sargent even included possible rule change language in his letters.

“All that is ought here is a ‘level playing field,’” wrote Sargent. “The local economic playing field should not benefit one product class at the expense of another, nor should it handicap any local product from competing with imports.”

There’s a certain logic to his requests, which is why Sargent is going to need all the luck he can get.

WEDNESDAY, APR. 6 A recent Paia Bypass report put out by the state Department of Transportation—the same outfit that’s catching hell for supposedly not being responsive to legislative inquiries on the proposed Superferry—has a couple local senators crying foul. According to today’s Maui News, that report’s prediction that the long-awaited Paia Bypass would be done by 2017—sharp!—thoroughly pissed off state Senators J. Kalani English (D, 6th District) and Shan Tsutsui (D, 4th District). But fear not! The DOT told the News that the report “was not accurate.”

In fact, the bypass is supposed to be done way earlier—2012, sharp! See, English and Tsutsui got all worked up over nothing.

The Bypass will be done in a scant seven years, not 12. Feel better? You know, such scheduling would be adequate, even reckless, if the Bypass was a 30-mile long, eight-lane elevated freeway that cut through seven neighborhoods and required kicking thousands of people out of their homes. But it’s not. The Paia Bypass is only supposed to run a few miles through cane fields. Guy could cut the corridor this weekend in a pickup with both doors left open.

Just wanted to thank the Hawaii Small Business Development Center Network, Hawaii Business Research Library, Maui County Office of Economic Development and anyone else who helped publish the brand-new, 2004 Maui County Data Book. Just stellar work. No, really, it’s just filled with helpful information everywhere. Well, everywhere except for page 109 and its accompanying Table 6.1.2: “Average Distribution of other newspapers, Maui County.” It’s a simple table— just the names of local weeklies, bi-weeklies and monthlies published on Maui with their circulation numbers.

Considering the detail and statistical breakdown of some of the other tables in the book, it’s probably the easiest data you guys compiled. You just find all the papers, then write down the circ figures that appear next to the staff boxes. And this you did for every weekly on Maui— except one, one especially close to my heart. Great job, and I mean that.

against a couple ungodly rich Cameron family members who used to run the pineapple/land development giant. Though Eagar does a fine job detailing the nagging grievances of former board member Claire Sanford and her mother, former director emeritus Mary Cameron Sanford—their exit from the ML&P board of directors came shockingly close to their blasting Cole’s actions as CEO, go figure—he never once mentions that the Camerons used to be his employer. For 60 years the Camerons owned The Maui News, along with their sizeable stake in Maui Land & Pineapple. They bought the paper in 1940, then sold it five years ago to West Virginia-based Ogden Newspapers, which has since bought up nearly all the papers listed on page 109 of the 2004 Maui County Data Book cited a few days ago. Funny how something small like that might have slipped his mind.

He says he’s eminently qualified—he’s a Catholic, mostly, and he’s already named John, so that pretty much puts him halfway there. He also says he knows more about pepper grinders than any guy really should. So I guess he could really help out the Vatican with their soup and salad preparation, which I have on good authority has really gone downhill for the last decade or so. But then he went and admitted that he also likes the ladies, and you know how big a no-no that is in the Catholic Church, so he’s got a big strike against him.

But on balance, we all had to admit that John is probably an excellent candidate for pope.

He’s got my vote.

A rigorous investigation by the Honolulu Advertiser has determined that the state Child Support Enforcement Agency (CSEA)—which is run out of our wonderful Attorney General’s office—is in terrible shape. What’s worse is that every two or three years—since 1992—the state comes to this identical conclusion, but then shrugs its collective shoulders and goes on wasting time and money instead of efficiently assisting the children of broken families, which is kinda what it’s supposed to do. Today the paper bashes its office computer system called KEIKI—don’t you love when bureaucrats get all cutesy with computer system names and such?—that took five years and $50 million to construct and even though it came online seven years ago is still plagued by problems. And yesterday, the Advertiser reported that the CSEA is dead last nationwide in going after deadbeat moms and dads.

Somehow CSEA has neglected to get the kids more than $500 million in delinquent payments. Oh, and because the work has been so crappy, the state has lost millions in federal incentives designed to reward good collections.

And the state’s response to all this? It shelved $11.8 million in accounts so the fed would never see them as delinquent. Now that’s service!

TUESDAY, APR. 12 Just how monstrous is the Carlyle Group going to get? It’s bad enough that last month the state Public Utilities Commission “conditionally approved” the defense giant and global private equity firm’s proposed takeover of our own Verizon Hawaii. Now the Washington Post is reporting that Carlyle—which enjoys cozy ties to the Bush family, the Saudi regime and a laundry list of former world leaders—is raising $250 million for a big land grab across Korea, Japan and China, which apparently stopped being “communist” about 20 years ago.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD TRUE ROMANTIC The inspirational Charles Gonsoulin of Los Angeles, pursuing a Canadian woman he had met on the Internet, sneaked across the border on foot in February from the North Dakota side (because a 1984 crime would have prevented his legal entry), heading for the bus station in Winnipeg, 75 miles away, even though he had no experience with sub-zero temperatures. When police picked him up just inside Canada, he was disoriented and had such frostbite that he lost 10 fingers and most toes. But he said later, “It was all worth it for me. It’s the difference between sitting around dreaming about things and going out and getting them. I know my life is complete.” He was scheduled for deportation as soon as he recovers, and the pair still haven’t met. The woman lives in a Montreal suburb, 1,400 miles from Winnipeg.

IN THE NAME OF RESEARCH In 1989, after his release from prison on petty crimes, John L. Stanley undertook the serious study of criminology, lecturing and even hosting a Dallas radio program on crime. NOT MY FAULT In separate incidents, trespassers Philip Dederer, 20, in Australia and Carl Murphy, 18, in England were awarded the equivalent of around US$1 million each in March after they were injured, even though blatantly trespassing on private property. Dederer, now a paraplegic, had disregarded “no diving” signs and continued to jump into the Wallamba River until an accident occurred. A sympathetic judge regarded the signs inadequate, in that none said that diving was “dangerous.”

Balance Shmalance Is The Maui News against the environment?

One of the hallmarks of modern, mainstream journalism is the newspaper editorial. American dailies like the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and even our own Maui News tell us that their news is objective—so thoroughly fact-based that all opinion must be reserved for a special section called “Opinion.”

This wouldn’t be such a bad system— if the newspapers actually expressed real opinions in their “Opinion” sections. The reality is that the big dailies usually waste space in their editorials summing the various points of view on a given issue, then ending by appealing for calm or calling for “balance.”

At first glance, The Maui News’ April 7, 2005 editorial “Evolution Needs Balance” seems to be exactly that kind of milquetoast blather. Never mentioning a specific issue—it could easily refer to the current fight over requiring a full environmental review of the proposed Superferry linking Maui to Oahu—the piece begins with a nostalgic recalling of the days when Maui was “much smaller” and complaints “tended to be muttered rather than shouted.”

But then the editorial tone shifts, seemingly attacking the concept of suing the gov-

The editorial ends with the classic call for balance, though by now the author is using such loaded language that a prodevelopment bias is obvious.

“Someone needs to keep an eye on the doings of tunnel-vision bureaucrats and those focused on profits only, but there needs to be a rational balance between the anything-goes elements in the islands and the citizens against virtually everything if Maui is going to evolve in any rational way,” notes the News in the classic mainstream but-onthis-hand fashion.

Deriding environmentalists and conservationists as mere obstructionists “against” proposals and “evolution” is an old one. In John McPhee’s 1971 book Encounters with the Archdruid, he recounts an appearance the fiery, radical conservationist David Brower made before an audience.

“I hate all dams, large and small,” McPhee quotes Brower as saying.

“Why are you conservationists always against things?” a critic from the audience asked.

Instead of defending his opposition, Brower flipped the debate on its head.

“If you are against something, you are for something,” Brower said. “If you are against a dam, you are for a river.”

In Brower’s world, and that of most conservationists, it’s the homebuilder, the runway-paver and the harbor-dredger who stands “against” nature. For them, progress is not the natural state of affairs, but an unrelenting opposition to everything they hold dear and important.

Perhaps someday The Maui News will understand that. MTW

Bamboo Chi Visiting a wondrous land without having to leave Maui As we entered Bamboo Chi, I felt as if I were entering a mellow, cosmopolitan lounge in a large Asian city. A giant golden Buddha greeted us with a smile in the foyer, a koi pond at his feet. The large open dining room divides into a stage area and dance floor, with tables to the left. Ultra modern couches, glass tables, candles, hanging veils and romantic lighting adorn the lounge to the right.

We chose the lounge for its chic comfort and exotic charm. My companion said that she felt “transported by the exotic quality to some special place” and the décor is certainly meant to do this. It was a slow Wednesday evening so we got a whole corner to ourselves, allowing us to kick back and enjoy this trip to an imaginary Asian/Mediterranean/Hawaiian island.

Of course, on a previous visit my date and I shared a corner with another couple and the close proximity of strangers actually made the experience more interesting as the openness of the lounge encourages conversation between patrons.

Long, cushy and stylish couches are set up in the spilt level lounge area and each alcove shares two of them and a large round glass table. Each individual area boasts its own charm. Long purple veils, like an elegant mosquito net, hung from above us and low reddish lights illuminated the space. Palms graced our corner, giving my companion a wild and beautiful look through the fronds and their shadows.

The food is every bit as exquisite and

multicultural as the decor. The menu consists of sophisticated tapas, or pupus, with selections including Mediterranean, Pacific Rim and Latin delights. Several fancy martinis go with the international lounge atmosphere— the minty Mojito Martini and the salty Margarita Martini very nicely represent Latin America, for example, but I opted for a Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale. Ceviche is my favorite dish and I like to try it wherever I see it. Bamboo Chi offers a Tahitian version with coconut milk. But on this recent visit it didn’t have the coconut milk, but was still called Tahitian Ceviche on the menu. It was no matter, since the traditional version is what we got and what I love.

It had tender, fresh fish marinated in lime juice, scallions and peppers. It wasn’t too spicy, but it had the same little kick I’ve found in Peru.

The nightly specials were remarkable on both my visits. The first time I was there I tasted their light, succulent Pacific snapper; on my more recent visit we shared the Opakapaka with creamy mashed potatoes, shitakes and ponzu. They perfectly grilled the substantive filet with light spices that complemented the fantastic flavor of the Opakapaka. We also ordered the Wailea curry with vegetables and jasmine rice. This fine yellow curry exploded with flavor while not overpowering with spiciness.

I loved the Asian Chicken Skewers as well.

Next time, I’m dying to try the Cordero Barcelona—grilled lamb with scalloped potatoes and a Moroccan honey/mint vinaigrette.

Several salads sound delicious, too, like the Chevre Goat Cheese or the special Ahi salad.

The experience is worth the high price tag, around $80 for two. The service was impeccable—our waiter Jake was attentive, present and relaxed without being over-bearing. The distinct ambience and unique cuisine make Bamboo Chi ideal for a first date or a night out with a group. It’s an outstanding dining experience, transporting the diner to a wondrous land without even leaving Maui. MTW

Brad Kim Food Runner, Aloha Mixed Plate I was born on Oahu and moved to Maui when I was 23, through a transfer with ABC Stores.

After 9/11, the company announced that it would be cutting back hours of employees due to less tourism in the islands and so I decided to take a full-time job with security for Tiffany’s and Co. I worked at Tiffany’s with the manager of Aloha Mixed Plate and he offered me a casual job, helping with the company’s catering business. I enjoyed working with the bartenders and management of Aloha Mixed Plate and so in September of 2004 I decided to apply to work at the restaurant. Now I work part-time as a food runner.

For more than a month now I have also been working as an air-conditioning apprentice for Sturdevant Air Conditioning. I went down to seasonal sales at Tiffany’s so I could pursue this interest from a desk job to labor. Hopefully, in two years I will have only this job—a fulltime career installing and repairing air-conditioners and refrigeration systems.

I try to keep a smile and my energy positive because it makes work better for my co-workers and the customers. I also like it when things are clean. Dirty ketchup bottles are my pet peeve. The most important thing for me is that I like the people at my different jobs. I could be digging holes and if I liked the people I would enjoy my job.

Everyone could use a little more time-off.

That will allow me to spend more time with my family and friends and I could focus more on my interests like paddling with the Napili Canoe Club. I will probably still pick up a shift or two at Aloha Mixed Plate, though, because I really enjoy the people. MTW

This dark, cozy boutique has been open since November, 2003. The lightweight, hand-loomed cotton and silk clothes with sophisticated embroidery based on Egyptian, Tibetan and Celtic designs hang on either wall. They’re arranged by tone: water, fire, earth and forest. The men’s clothes come in all four tones as well, but that inventory is low so they sit in their own section. Ropp himself is every bit as colorful as his clothes. The combination hippie/Wall St. shark recently celebrated his 60th birthday. He began 30 years ago designing T-shirts, one of which hangs today in the Smithsonian. Known for walking his Great Dane down Park Ave. in New York while wearing a top hat and tails, he also a tendency towards incendiary quotes. To the Honolulu Advertiser two years ago, he even paraphrased Nietzsche by noting that “fashion is dead.” More recently, he told a magazine, “I am not in fashion per se; I am in ‘artsy fartsy.’”

ALICE IN HULALAND What’s outstanding about Alice in Hulaland is the personal style of owner Stan Cohen. A former rock ‘n roll stylist of the 1970s and ‘80s, Cohen opened up Alice in Hulaland almost two years ago to “do something different from the other shops in Paia.” Sure, he’s up to date on the latest fashions in Da Nang embroidered soft cotton shirts, skirts and silk cargo pants. And yes, there is an endless supply of American Apparel, kitschy-slogan Junk Food and high-quality Trunk Ltd. concert tees, as well as the hautest, most bootylicious jeans with bling. SISTERS & CO. Presenting their case for one-stop shopping, this South Shore boutique is a beauty, hair salon and clothing store all in one! Sisters Linda, Rhonda, Sharon, Caroline and mom June began their unique boutique/salon concept almost three years ago. At the time, they had no idea how to start but quickly found the right spot to set up shop. “When you don’t know what you’re getting into, you have no fear,” said Linda. And within a few weeks, they were on a plane to L.A. to buy clothes. Self-proclaimed “shopaholics,” sisters Linda and Sharon—with June— select all of the clothes and jewelry together at the trade shows there, along with help from “some very cool vendors.” Currently, they carry casual yet sophisticated and always feminine designs from Tamara Catz, Rangoon and Da Nang, to name a few. Eventually, they hope to expand their tiny salon shop to include more of a spa atmosphere, with maybe a couch and coffee service—basically, more room to encourage their friends, customers and “sisters” to hang out.

BOHEMIA INC. There is no better name than “Bohemia” to describe this high-end consignment store. The mom and daughter duo of Lisa and Stephanie Strong have created an eclectic, international trading post for locals. Bohemia is a charming boutique of secondhand finds discarded from the multitudes of world travelers who flit in and out of Maui. It’s here that you find furniture from Bali, shoes from Spain, Brazilian bikinis actually from Brazil, European gowns, Colombian jewelry, as well as designer vintage and contemporary fashions, but at more accessible prices.

DJ Rap Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s [MUSIC] On any given day you can find me strolling down Front Street with my headphones on, listening to sweet, simple sounds like Yo La Tengo or maybe Ben Harper. I’m a slow-paced girl and that’s how I like my music to be. House or drum ‘n bass music has never held that much of an appeal to me. In fact, I doubt I had ever listened to an entire song until last week when circumstance drew my attention to DJ Rap. I fancy myself an open-minded person, entirely willing to try new things. So I went and picked up Propa Classics, Volume 1, released in 2001. When I popped it in, the mood in the room changed and the conversation seemed to ebb and flow in sync with the rhythm. It was intense and visceral. If my life had a soundtrack, this record would’ve totally been playing that time I got lost in the woods a couple years ago.

I was to speak with her—who also goes by the name Charissa Saverio—the following day and I was curious to see how this enigmatic voice drowning in a thousand beats would seem to me on a plain old Tuesday afternoon. I called her at about nine o’clock, interrupting Law & Order to my embarrassment. She said she didn’t mind—she was just winding down from her day.

“I wake up at about nine everyday,” she said. “Have a spot of tea, sit in the sun for a couple minutes then work straight through till nine and chill out to Law & Order.”

She was warm. Of course, I find everyone with a British accent warm. She was born to an Italian father and an Irish-Malaysian mother. Her childhood took her all over the world, as her father managed luxury hotels. At one time or another, she’s called Indonesia, Malta and Africa home.

“It was a very sheltered upbringing,” she said. “I spent a lot of time in boarding schools.”

While there, she studied classical piano and horseback riding.

Soon the world beyond boarding school began to sparkle.

When she was 14, Rap left home to backpack through Greece, Turkey and Europe. She then discovered Europe’s rave scene.

“I basically dedicated my life to being a raver and that was it,” she once said in an interview. “I didn’t have any digs, I lived in a squat.”

DJ. In an industry that can safely be called predominately male, Rap told me she worked her way in with little difficulty.

“It was easy,” she said, “because I was the first female to do all my own stuff.”

She began playing any beats she could on pirate radio stations. She also gained support from DJ Paul Oakenfold in Ibiza and made a name for herself in the British underground club scene.

Oh, and she’s hot. That’s possibly why Calvin Klein chose her to be part of the 2002 Dirty Denim campaign. But back to the subject at hand…

After about four years of being on the scene, Rap decided to create her own record label in 1992 called Proper Talent.

It allowed her to create, produce and record all of her own music out of her apartment office.

“Every album is my favorite to produce,” Rap said. “I get to take my time and enjoy it. I love the technicality of house music and I love how musically advanced drum ‘n bass is.”

Right now DJ Rap is working on her new album, Bulletproof, which should come out May 17, followed by a drum ‘n bass tour. In the meantime, she will be visiting our fair island. Call it a working vacation. And for us it’ll be a chance to get out of the house and shake our asses to something other than laidback acoustics.

Mishmash Adventure Derivative Hollywood movie whimpers “There’s no there there” is an apt way to describe the average Hollywood movie that occupies thousands of cinema screens across the country in a monopolized system that perpetually blocks out hundreds of foreign and independent movies. The latest adventure comedy from Paramount falls into that chasm as a shoddy derivative of the Indiana Jones and James Bond franchises.

Sahara

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/127 mins.

Matthew McConaughey plays generic sun-kissed treasure finder Dirk Pitt as he searches for an iron clad Civil War ship in the middle of the Sahara desert with his quirky sidekick and longtime best friend Al Giordino (Steve Zahn—Joy Ride).

Penelope Cruz adds female distraction for the explorers as Eva Rojas, a doctor working for the World Health Organization to remedy a plague sweeping Africa from an epicenter in Mali. The movie is based on the popular novel by Clive Cussler (Raise

The Titanic).

Sahara opens with a false start Civil War battle sequence that probably cost half of the film’s overall budget. In it, cannonballs from an offshore iron clad gunboat rip through trees and buildings on dry land while rebuffing a fierce attack. The explosive-heavy scene is wasted on the audience because, instead of lending context to a story that transpires 135 years later, it merely tips us off to the cardboard characters and lack of storyline to follow.

As opening credits roll we get an intimate 360-degree view of the inside of Dirk Pitt’s uninhabited scientific lab as it’s lined with photos of him and his buddy Al tacked on the walls. From the unattended ever-burning Bunsen burner we know that this is a set designer’s handiwork rather than a place where any serious scientific study ever takes place. In a way the filmmakers are being honest by letting the audience know up front that this will be a hollow adventure movie.

But it’s even worse than that.

Matthew McConaughey does his best Charles Atlas impression while he and Al borrow a high tech speedboat from their wealthy employer Admiral Sandecker (William H. Macy) in order to search around the waters of

LL Cool M West Africa for the Civil War boat that locals call the “Ship of Death.” From a civil war era gold coin found in a West African river, Dirk believes that the ship of his obsessions may be buried in the sands of the Sahara that were supposedly covered in water 135 years ago.

No cogent explanation is given on the fuzzy math used to make Dirk’s calculations, but it doesn’t matter much since Dirk’s search quickly becomes hijacked by a subplot about a corporate scumbag named Massarde (Lambert Wilson—Catwoman) who’s busy tainting Africa’s drinking water with nuclear waste disposal.

If Massarde isn’t stopped, the constant surge of toxic water will infect the oceans and

bring ruination on the planet. So before Dirk can find his treasure trove desert boat, he must shut down Massarde’s gigantic power plant with the help of Eva and Al. For an adventure movie based on chase scenes in exotic locations Sahara never takes hold because director Breck Eisner and his team of screenwriters can’t agree on what the story’s about or what tone should resonate against it. It’s telling that Matthew McConaughey executive produced Sahara for the way he’s presented as a pin-up rendition of Indiana Jones. Hollywood, like Wile E. Coyote, keeps going back to the drawing board to come up with yet another variation on a defective formula. MTW

FEVER PITCH – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy So Ms. Barrymore is at it again. At first, he seemed like just a simple guy (Jimmy Fallon) she meets and falls in love with. However, you know there’s always a problem. This time it’s baseball.

Even though their lives are very different, the relationship seems perfect until... yes that’s right—the baseball season begins and she has to compete with his first true love: the Boston Red Sox. Hang in there, Drew.

MISS CONGENIALITY 2 – (PG13) – Comedy – Goofy cute chicks rule! Like, Sandra Bullock for instance, who’s reprising her role as an FBI agent this time going undercover as a Las Vegas showgirl. Julia Roberts used to be cute and goofy, too, before she got all gaunt and sophisticated. But she’s not in this one anyway, so nevermind.

CONSTANTINE – (R) – Action-Adventure, Suspense, Horror and Thriller – As our astute intern puts it, this film looks like a cross between The Matrix and Devil’s Advocate. We love that good vs. evil, Heaven and Hell stuff! Plus, it’s got beautiful Kauai-boy Keanu Reeves playing the tortured investigator of supernatural mysteries and hottie Rachel Weisz as... well, who cares.

For the past 30 years Belew has been accenting the best of prog rock with his off kilter, twang bar shaking, squeeling guitar, that sounds like how David Byrne dances. On this recent effort, Belew enlists some of modern prog’s current superstars—Les Claypool (Primus) on bass and Danny Carey (Tool) on drums. Now that’s a power trio. This album has a wide array of sounds. Songs range from heavy hitters that can shred wallpaper at 50 yards, surrealistic soundscapes and complex arrangements that tattoo Celtic designs on your eardrums. STEREOLAB “MARGERINE ECLIPSE” The latest outing for the retro-future sound of Stereolab does not disappoint. Imagine Astrud Gilberto and Nico fronting the Velvet Underground playing a late night set of Esquivel tunes in the year 2084. Main composer and guitarist Sean O’Hagan creates intricate and beautiful soundscapes fusing various electronic bloops and bleeps with breezy orchestral arrangements and the cool vocal stylings of Laeticia Sadier. Margerine Eclipse almost feels like a greatest hits compilation, revisiting styles from earlier Stereolab releases. But even with the recent tragic death of backup singer/instrumentalist Mary Hansen from a biking accident, Stereolab continues to be the number one choice of cocktail music for the 21st century. — Elektra Records 2004

DOUG MARTSCH “NOW YOU KNOW” This is the first solo outing for Built To Spill singer/guitarist Doug Martsch. For those used to the epic indie guitar rock of Built To Spill, well, prepare for the softer and gentler side. The music matches his plaintive and earnest singing with a stripped-down acoustic setting, closer in style to musical hero Neil Young. Sinewy slide guitar solos replace the thundering grunge of his original band, and Martsch is just at ease with both. Shadowless Man Eric Paul Shaffer’s Lahaina Noon There are only two moments each year when you can stand under the sun and cast no shadow—two moments when the lamp of heaven is poised directly over the pointy top of your noggin. Each one is a “Lahaina Noon.”

Each one is a moment of pure up-anddown relationship to the cosmos, a moment of vertical presence, a fixed moment that gets deeper, richer, higher the longer you have the strength to stand in that unmoving spot.

Of course, most of us are too busy with horizontal activity to notice the Lahaina Noon. We live in a society that always rushes ahead—contra-flow coning, drivethru burger lines, Costco checkout lanes, baggage claim conveyor belts and calendars with paydays marked in red. So thank God for a poet like Eric Paul Shaffer, whose job is to grab these vertical moments and give them as gifts to the forward-churning world.

Shaffer’s new book Lahaina Noon, debuting at Borders Books & Music in Kahului on April 15, gives us a whole slew of these vertical moments, each one as clear and as rich as a sunrise.

Eric Paul Shaffer is an unusual phenomenon: a Maui poet. In American letters, the proper way to gain credentials as a poet is to publish widely in literary reviews, produce collections that draw critical acclaim, live like a happy monk and spend a lifetime capturing “Lahaina Noons.” Eric has those bona fide credentials.

He has published in American Scholar, Chicago Review, Pearl, Ploughshares and North American Review, among many other respected quarterlies. He has written four previous books of verse, including Portable Planet and Living at the Monastery, Working in the Kitchen (published, as is Lahaina Noon, by Leaping Dog Press). He has won two prestigious literary awards—the 2000 Potent Prose Ax Prize for Poetry and the 2002 Elliot Cades Award for Literature (the top prize in Hawai‘i).

I don’t know of anyone else who has achieved that kind of literary reputation while writing on, about and for the island of Maui.

Eric will be at Border’s to share coffee and cake and readings from his new book.

With him will be his friend and publisher, California poet Jordan Jones, who will add some readings from his own new collection called The Wheel.

For us Maui people, what’s so great about this new book is that the entire collection is rooted here, in the landscape that we alone know so intimately. Although Eric’s sights are set on the broadest literary horizons, his book is a gift particular to this place.

We know the place: Haleakala in starlight while driving mauka on ‘Oma‘opio Road; the Crater floor bathed in silver moonlight; an old missionary church near roaring surf; whales at sunset; a derelict bus abandoned in Pulehu Gulch. In “Kula Gold,” he describes this scene: Beyond Papawai Point, between the black backs of Lana‘i and Kaho‘olawe, Venus burns silver in the darkening sky.

The poems inhabit our landscape, precisely captured. They deal compassionately with our living cohorts—mynahs, pheasants, skylarks, sharks and even “Big Paw,” that free-range leopard people kept spotting (or did they?) last year. For “Big Paw,” Eric writes: I wish you stealth. Run fast and far when you see us.

We mean you no good, and I don’t want you dead or in a cage. I want no more killing or cages.

Eric often looks at the natural world with such compassion that he feels compelled to apologize for the behavior of humans. In “Whales at Sunset,” for example, he says: May the whales never hate us as much as we love ourselves.

And by the shore of this restless black sea, these blue stars, and the waning crescent yet to rise, may we kill ourselves before we kill the last of them.

But I don’t want to portray this poet as a grouchy critic of Homo sapiens. Far from it.

Eric’s wit and big-hearted humanity, so obvious when you meet him, permeate his poems.

There are several humorous poems dealing with people. For example, the fellow who joins him in watching a skylark and then comments, “A man would have to be crazy to sing like that.”

15 Fridaanking shoes... / 4 ring your sk an hour to do yard work. When Eric turns down the offer, Lexus asks, “So if you don’t cut grass, what do you do?” So Eric tells him: He considers my denim cut-offs, black-rubber yard boots, the cut grass steaming, lying redolent with green.

“You don’t look like a poet.”

It’s a fun poem, though too involved to really catch in a brief excerpt. The point here is to convey the fact that these poems are easy, clear, accessible to any reader. They are also enjoyably lucid when heard in a live reading. Eric will not dabble in the world of obscure poems that make listeners feel like dummies. No. His poems are easy to get into—and then hard to get out of; you keep circling around thinking about them as they deepen in meaning. Such is the vertical fascination of a Lahaina Noon.

One of my favorites, here in its entirety, is called “The Light Alone”: The whole plane was dark with snoring and the flickering light of Hollywood images, except for sudden flashes of sun from one boy raising, lowering, and raising his window shade, one little boy who couldn’t let the light alone.

Those flashes of illumination! I just can’t help but think that this little boy “who couldn’t let the light alone” is an apt symbol for the poet Eric Paul Shaffer himself.

If you know Eric even slightly, as I do, you’d agree: he lives, somehow, in perpetual Lahaina Noon, darting out with bright ideas into our dark-rimmed world.

Check out the shadowless man. He is giving us quite a gift. MTW

What with all the random scraps of junky furniture abandoned by previous occupants, it’s gotten pretty ugly. It certainly doesn’t suit you. Here’s the thing. I’m talking about a couple of the rooms in your head.

Supermodels and Superheroes Who’s the rookie in the tiara?

-Green Lantern referring to Wonder Woman in Justice League: Secret Origins (2001) In the wee hours of the morn last Friday, I went to the store to get a couple bottles of champagne.

It was very necessary, you see, as I was off to do a big time, high-fallutin’, very glamorous fashion photo shoot with models and everything. And I was the set assistant. Very glamorous.

When I arrived with the food tray—a pack of gum, grapes and a carton of Marlboro Lights—the photographer, coordinator and models were knee-deep in haute couture fittings and professional makeup application. So as the very important set assistant, I assisted in opening the first bottle of champagne. And the second.

Then we were off to location after location, toting garment bags and waterproof trunks stuffed with clothing, jewelry, shoes and other accoutrements, creating ghetto-ized makeshift dressing rooms on the side of the road while the lovely young models fought blazing sun, high speed winds, red dirt and leering onlookers to switch in and out of skintight tops, flowy dresses and short skirts while not sweating or getting makeup on anything. Glamorous, indeed.

At the end of the day, Kim, BJ and I headed for drinks at the Kahului Ale House. And we were so over fashion at that point that we all subconsciously decided to don indistinctive black attire. The Easy and DJ Platelunch eventually performed but I believe it was the generous DJ’s offering of a tray of Irish Car Bombs that inevitably sent us a-packin’.

The following Wednesday was Sasha The Kid’s birthday. So again with the champagne TBB, BJ, Sasha and I went up to Makawao, this time hanging with aunty Marlene and the boys at Casanova for a fabulously charmed Italian dinner. Then afterwards, we stayed on for the infamous Ladies’ Night festivities, ordering birthday shots like Lemon Drops and Kamikazes.

After the third round and not even buzzed, the four of us played the If & Who Game, which is basically a series of questions that allows us single girls to purposefully scope out the room and assess the prospects, while giving our married friends a chance to be involved in the conversation. Anyhow, the questions include such gems as: “If you had to elect a stranger here to be President, who would it be?”

Or, “If you had to switch genders with someone here, who would you switch with?”

And the ever popular, “If someone was pointing a gun to your head and you absolutely had to make-out with somebody in the parking lot right now and nobody would ever know, who would you pick?”

But we forgot one vital drinking rule: Never eat a full meal before a night of excessive boozing if you are hoping for drunken foolery! What amateurs! And so we were shamed into sobriety for the rest of the evening.

A couple days later, non-alcohol involving work took me into Paia in the late afternoon. So naturally, when I was done, I stopped at the SandBar for a cocktail.

You know, I hate to be predictable but I also hate being sober on a perfectly decent pau hana Friday with money burning a hole in my pocket and those damn Paia bartenders luring me in like sirens with their blasted margarita specials and happy hour libations.

And then like a blur, prolific band du jour The Easy played, followed by the John Moore Project, maybe some flirting on my part and definitely some testosteronefueled mayhem on somebody else’s, Reeny saved me from certain death, Billy lost his shoe, and then I think Ken and I hightailed it down to Jacque’s, which was packed but the doorman let me in because my name was not Anthony Pignataro.

On Saturday after a full day of recovery by means of thrift store shopping therapy, my Wailuku buddies and I prepared to attend a Superheroes & Villains party at Mulligan’s in Wailea. Once I suited up in my Kill Bill 2 evil nurse dress and blonde wig with eye patch, BJ opened the door in an outfit we would later call “Evil Warrior Hooker Prom Queen of the Damned.” And she looked good, too.

But that wasn’t what distracted me, for behind her was a blue-tights-wearing, yellow satin cape flying, black Batman-masked man soaring across my backyard being chased by two poodles.
