Important!

We’re weird. We actually LOVE doing taxes. Okay. Not many people can say this, but we at the DK Levin Company actually ENJOY doing tax returns.

In no time at all, you’ll have beautifully prepared returns, with every possible deduction and credit. The IRS will be happy, you'll be happy, and you may even discover something for yourself.

The forms. The worksheets. All that complex math and figures.

That you actually ENJOYED it too.

It may not make sense, but it’s true. We’d like NOTHING better than to sit down with you and go over your W-2’s and 1099’s and other tax information. Then you can go home and we’ll get down to the fun stuff. Web:

WORD FROM ROGER’S NEIGHBOR Thank you for doing so much research and caring about Roger Swanson (“The Puzzling Case of Roger Swanson,” Apr. 28, 2005). There are some parts that need to be clarified. The Board of the Kihei Kai Nani Homeowners Association has the most intelligent, kind, caring, patient people that could possible make up a board. They tried for five years and three months to help this man. Everyone around him was being punished and suffered in some way from his erratic behavior. They could not have been nicer. They went beyond the call of duty to help this person. None of the organizations that are supposed to help this type of person in the County of Maui helped him either. He fell between the cracks. Destination Maui, the management company, spent more time and hours trying to help and rehabilitate him than you could ever imagine which was not their job in the first place. It is not a condo complex’s job to monitor someone who needs help and direction. They are not a rehabilitation hospital even though they went beyond the call of duty in this case. We did like Roger and hope that somehow someone can work with him and help him out. We lived with many of our friends and family being harassed, put out and disrupted by his many shenanigans and activities constantly during the day and night. We sold our wonderful condo that we had planned to retire in—that we had put most of our life savings into—in January, 2005 because of the situation with the Swanson Family and the sad, depressing, ongoing problems, frustration, disappointment and harassment that our family and friends had been going through for the last five years. Our “paradise” had become a “sad” place for us all. We left with tears rolling down our face. -Joe and Evie Dopart, Pittsburg, California

DOESN’T CARE FOR DOWLING Legislature fiddles while Maui’s media access burns! Finally, brain dead legislators decided not to pass “Everett’s Bills” to gut Akaku—but too late to save Maui’s cutting edge media access! (“Everett’s Bills,” Mar. 3, 2005) Everett Dowling still managed to hijack Maui’s only local TV and force a hostile takeover by State education bureaucrats. All Akaku has to show for the brutal treatment is slashed operations and mounting legal fees. Maui needs pono media, not control by greedy and powerful land speculators like Dowling. Akaku is for the people and needs public support. Call the Governor to set this right! Imua! -Hugh Miliator, via email

WE’RE POPULAR IN KULA! At the end of this issue’s (April 28, 2005) Coconut Wireless you wonder “if anybody ever reads these.” If by “these” you mean The Week in Review, then count me as someone who not only reads the entire column, but considers it as the best part of Maui Time Weekly. I ALWAYS read your column, even if sometimes I have no time to read anything else. Please keep up the good work—your wit never fails to amuse me even if the news doesn’t. -Martha Vanderlin, Kula

ehbrah@mauitime.com I read here all the time about people who’ve had their slippers and beach towels stolen, and that’s bad, but I think the bastards who stole my truck on Mother’s Day are worse. I loved that truck. It’s a 1985 red Toyota 4-runner with a black top. I called it my chariot. That truck contained my life: my Ni’ihau shell necklace, ‘70s peace belt, freaky clothes only I would wear and my purse with ID and everything else. I was using it for storage while moving between houses. I loved that truck so much, and now it’s probably chopped. I’ve shipped it across the ocean three times. I’m just a waitress who serves others for a living. It’s going to take a year of hard work, probably more, for me to replace everything. I had hoped to keep it forever, but now I guess not.

‘We Allowed It’

More meat missives I’ve been to a lot of Vegetarian Society of Hawai’i lectures. I’ve seen lifelong cattle rancher Howard Lyman denounce meat eating. I’ve seen 73-year-old medical doctor William Harris attack the famed Atkins Diet for saying “good things about bad foods.” I’ve even seen actress Alicia Silverstone talk about her vegan conversion and the absurdity of drinking cow’s milk. On May 12, I saw health consultant Kerrie Saunders speak at the Cameron Center as part of the latest Vegetarian Society lecture. Though not a medical doctor, she does hold a doctorate in natural health. She works as a food and fitness consultant at the McIntyre Health Center in Port Huron, Michigan. “One of the biggest myths out there about disease is that Americans are living much longer,” Saunders, wearing a purple blouse and pants, told the 30 or so attendees. “At our clinic, when we say ‘Let’s lay off the pop,’ we literally have people say,

Her many features include a rock-climbing wall, golf simulator and something rather creepy called “The Colony Club,” which Royal Caribbean describes as “a unique British colonial-style lounge with self-leveling pool tables.” She does respectable in a CDC inspection, but suffered a few lapses those blokes in the old colonies might have found a bit underdone. For instance, inspectors found that the whirlpool spa water wasn’t being changed on a daily basis. There were “cracked and stained” coffee cups at the Thirst Quencher Station. There were “soiled” bowls and pans in the Deck 5 Room Service Pantry and Deck 4 Main Galley, respectively. But most disturbing was the “jug of bleach” inspectors found in a “dishrack of soiled glasses” at the Lido Bar. Blimey!

Ew, who left this here? ‘What else is there to drink?’” Though interesting, Saunders’ message that a plant-based diet is far healthier than one based on beef, dairy and those tacos they sell at Jack-in-the-Box that are really tasty but made of some indeterminate meat was virtually identical to past Vegetarian Society of Hawai’i lecturers. In fact, Saunders actually poked fun at the notion that no vegetarian speaker will ever give an audience new information by talking about a 1927 experiment by a Dr. S. Sweeney that showed test subjects’ blood “spiked into the diabetic range” after a couple days on a high-fat diet. Still, the idea that eating meat exposes people to fats and cholesterol which don’t exist in plants is old news. Won’t people tune out after hearing the same message month after month? “I worry more that the experts will give differing advice,” Laurelee Blanchard, the Farm Sanctuary campaign coordinator who hosts each monthly lecture, told me after last week’s meeting. “The redundancy is probably a good thing. People need to be reminded to eat their vegetables.” Saunders did provide some new information. She sarcastically noted that the American Heart Association continues to serve chicken, meat and eggs at its annual dinners and fundraisers. “In a way,” she said, “this is like job security.” She also spoke of the disease Kwashiorkor, which is caused by eating too little protein.

“No one knows anyone in the United States who has Kwashiorkor,” Saunders said. Yes, we Americans are well acquainted with protein—fruits and vegetables, not so much. “There are 13,000 types of legumes,” she said. “It’s hard to get bored.” Saunders also listed the reasons people get osteoporosis, one of which was “animal protein intake.” She also said, amazingly enough, that the six nations sporting the highest osteoporosis rates—the U.S. is among them—are also the top six consumers of cow’s milk. “You never hear about that in the media,” she said. At times her talk became technical, focusing on “high LDL,” “calcium absorption rates” and the “Omega 6/Omega 3” balance. But at other times she was quite earthy—especially when she gave what she called “the poop talk.” Rather than go into detail about such matters, I’ll just quote her as saying that for vegetarians, “the days of reading a novel in the bathroom should be over.” MTW

Where the Maui County Department of Liquor Control is concerned, even doing the right thing sometimes isn’t enough. The crew of the tour boat Prince Kuhio knows this only too well. During the May 5 Board of Adjudication hearing, Maui-Molokai Sea Cruises, which owns the Kuhio, got $4,500 in fines for allowing—not serving—four minors to drink alcohol during a charter cruise. “This has never happened to us before,” Chief Operating Officer Cindy Koehne told the Board. “It never occurred to me how easy it is for minors to consume on a vessel without your knowledge.” The trouble that befell the boat is more than simply semantics. During the Sept. 23, 2004 charter cruise in question, the Kuhio’s bartender carded the minors when they first tried to buy drinks. Immediately realizing they were minors, she refused them and then told the rest of the crew not to serve them. As far as the LC investigators could determine, none of the crew ever served the minors—all 17 and 18-year-old girls—during the cruise. The problem, as Koehne later said, was that “They were hell-bent on drinking on the boat.” Because the Kuhio only had one crewmember actively looking after the 60 passengers, it became fairly easy for the four minors to serve themselves. LC Director Franklyn Silva said the issue was… that we allowed them to consume,” Koehne told the Board. “It doesn’t matter if they went to the bathroom and pulled out a flask—we allowed it… We didn’t serve them. But they did get it.” The girls took advantage of the fact that no wristbands were issued to people authorized to drink. And that all drinks—hard and soft—were poured into the same type of cup. And that just one member of crew had an LC Bar/Manager card. And especially from the fact that someone had placed a couple beer kegs 10 feet away from the bar. While making her penalty case, Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge was as dramatic as usual—even saying at one point that the kids had been “drinking all night.” In fact, they were only on the boat from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. But she was funny. “We’re talking about 17 and 18-year-olds,” she told the Board. “They get stupid.” MTW

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, MAY 11 Doing pretty good today. Haven’t found an appendage in my chili and/or custard; taken the witness stand in defense of Michael Jackson; faked my own kidnapping to get out of a wedding; watched my nomination to be Ambassador to the United Nations drag on while former subordinates tell the world what a rotten boss I am; masterminded the largest corporate-pension default in U.S. history; checked myself into a South African mental hospital; or flown a light plane within three miles of the White House. But hey, the week is still young.

THURSDAY, MAY 12 I had no idea The Carlyle Group was so warm and personable! And here I thought they were just a heartless $25 billion private global equity fund that builds weapons, kisses royal Saudi ass and buys and sells companies solely for profit. But today they sent me a Thank You card! Little ol’ me! Okay, so it was Carlyle’s wholly owned subsidiary Hawaiian Telcom who sent me the card, but does that really matter? And what a card it is: “We’re your new locally based telecommunications company,” wrote Hawaiian Telcom CEO Michael S. Ruley. “We combine responsive, locally based customer service with a full range of telecommunications products and services.” Notice how he kept mentioning that the company is “locally based”? Ain’t that shrewd, considering that all the profits are actually New York-based?

FRIDAY, MAY 13 According to the Associated Press, rumors that television empress Oprah Winfrey urged her viewers to buy land in

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

Hilo and Puna have spurred a Big Island land rush. In fact, the AP’s reviews of program transcripts show that Winfrey—who owns more than a hundred acres of Hana and Upcountry land—never specifically mentioned the Big Island. Though she did say that buying oceanfront land around here was a good idea because “God’s not making any more land in Hawai’i.” Maybe not God, but those Big Island volcanoes are doing a damn good job on their own… Doesn’t happen too often, but this week I scooped the Washington Post! In the May 12 edition of this column, I briefly touched on a British secret service memo from 2002 that showed pretty conclusively that George W. Bush was going to invade Iraq in defiance of both his public pledges to seek a peaceful solution and the non-existence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. The Sunday Times of London broke the story weeks ago, but other than a few websites, no American paper had picked it up. Now in fairness, the Los Angeles Times also wrote about the secret memo, but that came out same day as my story, so that’s basically a tie. And it in no way diminishes the fact that I beat the mighty Washington Post. In your face Woodward and Bernstein! Take that Executive Editor Leonard Downie, Jr.!

Reporter Harry Eagar of The Maui News reported today that Maui Land and Pineapple Co. Director Richard Cameron, a member of the corporate board since 1984, has resigned. He gave the usual litany of reasons—“personal and family reasons”—but that’s not even close to the most shocking revelation in the story. No, the most amazing, incredible, astonishing thing about ML&P Director Cameron—grandson of company founder and titan J. Walter

Cameron—is the third line of Eagar’s story: “Reached at his job at Borders Express in Kihei, Cameron said he did not wish to say more.” I’m sorry, but that can’t be right. The heir to the Cameron Family fortune and member of the corporate board of directors of the most powerful landowner on Maui… has a job? I mean, not to put too fine a point on this, but Cameron actually works for a living? In the service sector? I mean, this is astounding—a bit like saying that I couldn’t get Michael Ovitz on the line because he was too busy slinging burgers at Carl’s Jr. Okay, that’s a bit over the line. Yeah—it’s more likely Ovitz would work at Subway.

People who want to fly—which, on Maui, includes just about everyone—will now have to give their birthdates at the airline ticket counter, if the all-powerful Transportation Security Administration (TSA) gets its way. So says today’s Pacific Business News. This is, naturally, long overdue—who among us doubts that all 19 hijackers on Sept. 11, 2001 would have been foiled if the check-in clerks had asked those guys when they were born. But what’s done is done. Interestingly, the TSA isn’t asking to change a peculiar quirk passed as part of 2002 Homeland Security Act that makes secret the law allowing TSA screeners to conduct random searches of passengers before boarding. This Kafkaesque abomination— allowing government officials to use security to justify concealing laws and statues from citizens rather than the usual stuff like battle plans, nuclear launch codes and that box-thing on Dubya’s back—is apparently just fine with the TSA. And I know, my name is probably being typed into some nefarious database right now for writing this. And you know what that means… Woohoo, I’m famous!

So George W. is in Virginia talking up the virtues of biodiesel and other alternatives to our beloved 87 Octane. Even flew out Maui’s own biodiesel pioneer Robert King for a couple quick grip-n-grin photos. Now all this I find fascinating, and not completely because Bush just seems to have noticed that there are alternatives to oil even though King has been refining diesel fuel from French fries for the last 12 years. No, I’m fascinated by this because Bush actually said that he understands how we’re all concerned about record-high gas prices which seem to have started rising within seconds of him being sworn in back in 2001. “I wish I could just wave a magic wand and lower the price at the pump,” he said, according to the AP. Who needs a magic wand? Why not just cut out all these wars in the Middle East and see if that helps? Anthony Pignataro has not written for several other publications, including The New York Times. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD NOT THE HARDIEST OF CITIZENS Windsor, Ontario, hair stylist Waddah (Martin) Mustapha was awarded the equivalent of about US$270,000 by a court in April after he testified that he became racked with depression upon seeing a fly inside a commercial bottle of water at his salon. Presumably, damages would have been more if Mustapha had actually drunk from the bottle (or even opened it). As it was, he and his wife vomited and he required extensive psychotherapy for nightmares, loss of sense of humor, increased argumentativeness, lack of desire to shower regularly and constipation.

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS In April, Laura and Edmund Gerstein of Boca Raton, Fla., who want to save their beloved backyard grapefruit tree from the state’s citrus canker eradication program, formally claimed immunity for the tree under a provision in the 1949 Geneva Conventions. The Gersteins pointed to a paragraph on protecting crops needed for civilians’ survival during wartime, in that, said Edmund, “As I understand it, [the U.S.] is in a state of war.” A state Department of Agriculture spokesman responded by saying, “That tree will be coming down.”

The decision is pending.

COVER STORY

They do it all around the islands, at Baldwin Beach Park, at Ho’okipa, at Thousand Peaks and even at Peahi. At first glance it’s a new trend, but really it’s just reviving the ancient Hawaiians’ practice of combining canoe paddling with surfing. Big wave surfers Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama were among the first, along with Paia resident Loch Eggers. “We think the ancient Hawaiians were stand-up-paddling in their double hull Hawaiian sailing or paddling canoes,” Eggers told me. “The hulls were very deep, we think that even during wartime they stood up and paddled and they were protected from the side. Look at old pictures. On the Big Island, the have found super long paddle shafts.” I saw Eggers recently on a big day out at Ho’okipa, standing and paddling out while everyone else lay on his or her boards. He caught big waves with elegance and power. “I first thought about trying it two years ago when Laird [Hamilton] was stand-up paddling at Ho’okipa,” said Eggers, an avid waterman since early childhood. “I brushed it off at first but then started thinking again: canoe-paddling to catch waves is cool. I canoe-paddled for 25 years or so, ever since I was 12. “About a year after I had seen Laird at Ho’okipa, he was down at Baldwin Beach in front of Dave Kalama’s father’s house and I gave it a try. It was the most challenging thing I have done in the water, to learn a new ocean sport in a super long time. I have always been connected to the ocean, growing up here, but it took all my ocean ability to just stand up and get going and I fell down on my face about seven or eight times within the first 15 minutes. You know, in some ways it was funny and I kept trying. It took me about a week to be able to start surfing and having a fun time, but by then I was hooked.” You can see Eggers out there on any good day. Every time I see him, I wonder how difficult it is for him to balance on the board while paddling. “Stand-up-paddling really is a physical cross training for other sports,” Eggers said. “It’s one of the best cross training physical workouts. Let’s say you are a world champion windsurfer and you want to cross train, you just jump up on board and do stand up paddling. It takes it all down to basics and it’s just like learning to surf all over again.” Sounds great. I told him I’ve thought about giving it a try. I’ve windsurfed and kiteboarded for a while, but I’ve never really learned how to surf. “I found that females and kids pick it up a lot quicker than us males,” he said. “Females have better balance. Males have a tendency to muscle it, females approach it more at tech and will go out and out-performance the males. We have to find our female side first and not to muscle it. Males are stubborn—maybe they have to be more ballerinas than full-on muscle head jocks when first trying it. It also teaches you a greater stand of balance in the ocean and to be a lot more sensitive to what’s going on. After so many years in the ocean it’s just a great training tool. “A lot of heavy duty water men and women are incorporating the stand-up paddling in their training,” said Eggers. “A lot of people over here now do recreational like what Laird and I do in the big waves. There are already about a hundred plus people, it’s growing, it’s a really fun thing to do. It’s challenging. I see a lot more females wanting to get in it to do it, at Launiupoko and Thousand Peaks.” Now paddle surfing isn’t cheap. After all, regular canoe paddles are too short for this kind of use. Right now, a board will run $1,000 to $1,400 and a paddle goes for $250 to $300. “Right now the sport is in a little funk due to the high price for equipment,” he said. “A very small group of us are trying to get the price down. What I would like to see is, that you can get a board and a paddle for $700 like a package deal. Unfortunately it takes more people who do it fork down the big bucks in the beginning, then the big companies will see the popularity and react, they are looking at it already. I thought it’s a novelty but it’s turning into a sport.” The big advantage to paddle surfing is obvious: you’re not level with the water surface but far above it, so you have a better view of the swell’s direction as well as the marine life. “I have gone out several times with a group and we see turtles, all sort of fish and dolphins,” Eggers said. “The last whale season was just spectacular, we saw adult waves right in front of us, stuff you don’t regularly see, in a canoe or kayak because you have, like, five-foot-six elevation to look down and around. It’s like the Charles Darwin theory of the evolution of men in paddling sports: finally you stand up!” MTW

Save Maalaea

What Surfrider is doing about Freight Trains - By Anthony Pignataro Between the months of April and September, powerful storms begin forming off the eastern coast of New Zealand. These storms generate tremendous swell. And every once in a while, some of that swell will head north on a 4,000-mile journey past Tonga, Samoa, the Cook Islands and the Line Islands before reaching Hawai’i. Rarer still, some of that swell will then shoot the eight-mile gap between Kaho’olawe and the southern tip of Maui and race into Ma’alaea Harbor. That’s what we call Freight Trains, the fastest rideable wave in the world that Surfing has called one of the 25 best waves anywhere. For the last 30 years, Freight Trains has been threatened by the proposed expansion of the Ma’alaea Harbor breakwall. Arrayed against that breakwall—which will almost assuredly destroy the Freight Trains break—has been the Surfider Foundation’s Maui chapter. To find out how the battle against the breakwater is going, I spoke with Jan Roberson, the chairwoman of Surfrider’s Maui chapter.

or more in damage it has to be reported. Surge might be an issue, but we don’t think it’s that big. It happens only when the south swell is big, but that’s only a limited time per year. What’s normal wear and tear? We’re in the design stages of a survey right now. We want to ask people with boats in the harbor, people on the waiting list and people with trailered boats. And condo owners and recreational ocean users such as surfers and divers. We’re looking at the efficacy of the plan and the efficiency of the design. And whether people want the number of slips more than doubled, from 89 to 220. We’re also looking at NOAA records to see how often a damaging south swell comes into the harbor. We’re thinking that it’s a pretty safe harbor, but we need to see the data. We want to try and come up with empirical evidence to see how much surge damages boats. If it does, will this [breakwater] design—which dates to 1968—reduce the damage? Continued on page 14 ➤

Maui Time Weekly: What’s the latest on the proposed breakwall? Jan Roberson: A new state manager tells us that they put the [proposed] 620-foot extension of the breakwater and the additional slips on hold for 20 years, but he won’t put it in writing. If he’s not going to put it in writing, we can’t be sure if they’re back-burning Ma’alaea. We also just got a $30,000 grant from the Ford Foundation. That allows us to hire an economist and a coastal engineer, who will try to determine if surge is a problem and will [the proposed expansion] impact Freight Trains. What will they be doing exactly? The economist is reviewing the state’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) archives. Every time a boat has an accident causing $200 PHOTO: WATERMONSTER PHOTO

Every year they say it’s going to be this winter. A month ago the Army Corps of Engineers said they were going ahead with it. Then the state said it’s on hold, but we’re proceeding as though it’s going ahead. Besides, the Ford grant has to be spent by September. Maybe we’ll come up with what they call a “Locally Preferred Plan.” But we don’t know what it would be. Ford suggested we come up with an international harbor design contest. But we don’t know right now. What’s the Army Corps of Engineers up to?

The Corps has video that shows wave modeling. They made a replica of Ma’alaea Harbor with a wavemaking machine in an airplane hanger. But it only showed a wave from a south swell. We want to find out if a wave in the four to six foot range is problematic. Or is a wave in the six to 10 foot range where damage would be sustained? There’s so much evidence pointing to the Army Corps of Engineers underestimating costs and overestimating their effectiveness. And that came from the Government Accounting Office. When they say they’re not going to wreck Freight Trains or even that surge is an issue, then we have to check their math and science. It seems this has gone on forever. Has anything changed in recent years? The Army Corps and DOBOR are cooperating. There’s no more stonewalling. We’re getting the information that we seek. Because we’ve been able to sit at the table, we’ve gotten to dispel notions about each of us. They invite us to events now. Ma’alaea Harbor is one of four harbors in the state that generates a profit. We understand why they want to preserve that. It’s no longer just the surfers against the boaters. We have to work together.

A Shapers Life

KITE BOARD

Jimmy Lewis is in shape - By Inga Stracke Ever since the beginning of the Kanaha race series, more racers placing in the top three or winning a division have used JL windsurfing boards than any other. In 1982, Pascal Maka took a JL board and smashed the existing windsurfing speed record with an incredible 27.82 knots. A year later, Maui resident Fred Haywood demolished Maka’s record using another one of JL’s boards by going 30.82 knots. Eventually, windsurfer Eric Beale managed to top 40 knots using one of Lewis’ boards. Well known for his provocative and controversial ads in surf magazines worldwide—one popular ad called “Bitch Witch” features a beautiful girl wearing a painted-on bikini top—Jimmy Lewis has made himself a name as one of the best all-round board shapers. He began shaping the first kiteboards six years ago when Laird Hamilton began playing around with the sport. “The boards we made were more like oversized water-skis,” Lewis told me. “I began to make a few wakeboards for kiting, others started to take notice of the boards I was making and suddenly, it’s seemed most of the top riders in the rapidly growing sport were coming to get my wakeboards.” Lewis said he’s been making things out of foam, fiberglass and resin since 1962. He crafted first fullsized surfboard in 1968. By 1981, when he started making windsurfing boards, shaping was his only source of income. Lewis first came to Maui for surfing in 1969. He stayed just three months, but couldn’t get the island out of his head. By February 1971, he was back, this time for good. “I’ve done a bit of travelling in the past 20 to 21 years and, although there have been some nice places I’ve been to, I don’t think I could or would ever live anywhere else,” Lewis told me. “I went to Brazil several times about a year ago and I just recently went to Costa Rica. We’d go out to dinner in our shorts and t-shirts and be sweating like pigs. Here on Maui, the weather is perfect for me and, I’m sure, lots of other people. Of course the conditions here surf-wise and wind-wise make it an ideal place for a board maker because of the many opportunities to test ride the boards.” Recently, I took my JL “Dominatrix” kite/wakeboard to Surfers Paradise in Australia. There, the local top-wakeboard guru took me on a ride on the rivers. He didn’t want to believe I could go behind his boat using this board. After I proved him wrong, he eagerly asked if he could try it out. I asked Lewis what makes his boards like Dominatrix or the new Bitch Witch so special, and he smiled. “I have made the boards that some manufacturers have molded for their production line, notably Starboard and Wipika,” he said. “I also do prototypes, plugs and team boards for two of the other big manufacturers. I made the first Dominatrix shape in May of 2002. Recently some manufacturers and some shapers are coming out with a knock-off of some sort of this design. But the one thing these pretenders don’t have and never will be able to duplicate is the JL Magic.” MTW

Why I like the Ale House I really enjoy the baby back ribs at the Kahului Ale House. They’re exceptionally meaty and tender and come glistening in a dark, rich smoky hoisin sauce. The meat comes off so cleanly that the bones look like they’ve been lying in the desert for a year. Okay, half a year. A quarter of a year? Certainly, not less than 30 days. In any case, this is funny because I shouldn’t like the ribs. I mean, they’re not True Barbecue. Calvin Trillin—perhaps the greatest, funniest food writer in

the U.S. today—has written much on the subject of True Barbecue. True Barbecue does not come from a restaurant—certainly not one like the Ale House that has running air conditioning and plenty of parking out front. No, True Barbecue requires a pit. True Barbecue cannot come from an oven or “pressure smoker.” It also—and this part is non-negotiable—can’t have any sauce. Not a drop. Any barbecue flavor comes from the wood, pit and meat. “Despite my occasional rants, I never truly qualified as a barbecue purist,” Trillin wrote in his 2003 book Feeding a Yen. “A barbecue purist, it turns out, is seriously interested in whether or not the proprietor of a barbecue joint chops his own wood.” Now, they do very little wood chopping at the Ale House. That’s because the Ale House is what Trillin calls “La Maison de la Casa House.” It’s a continental place, serving foods from around the world that have been so Westernized that they’re unrecognizable to individuals hailing from their native lands. In addition to ribs, they sell sandwiches, salads, wings, wraps, burgers, pizza and appetizers made from jalapeño peppers. But they do make great ribs. A half order, sold for $19.95, is always plenty for me, though a full rack can be had for $27.95. Their Portuguese Bean Soup, of all things, is also absolutely delicious. The steaks are good, too, if you like those sort of things. The chicken wraps are wonderful creations and the hamburgers are fine as well. They’re big hulking things that come with bleu cheese and Cajun spices, if you wish, but strangely enough not lettuce, tomato or onion (they’re $1.50 extra). The Ale House is a manic place. There’s no other way to describe it. The moment you walk in the door, there are innumerable placards, signs, screens and gizmos all competing for your attention. Once past the t-shirt concession stand

at the door, it’s not hard to find the arcade. It’s got half a dozen games, including Golden Tee 2002. Inside are three pool tables, a dartboard and a basketball shooting hoop. Helpfully placed adjacent to the arcade is an ATM, jukebox and a couple of those claw machines that kids use to grab candy and stuffed toys. Hanging on the walls are sports jerseys and photos—some of which are autographed. A couple windsurfing boards—complete with sails— are suspended from the ceiling. Then there are the usual neon beer signs, flashing beer signs and neon flashing beer signs. The square-shaped bar has trivia games at each corner. I saw at least one inflatable stock car dangling from the ceiling, as well as countless sheets advertising food specials, upcoming shows and contests. Oh, and there’s something like 20 television sets, which could be showing two or even three different games, unless it’s March Madness, in which case they’re all tuned to CBS. In truth, I could care less about all that stuff. As I said before, I go for the ribs. MTW

I came to Maui via a manager transfer with the Gap. After I arrived I felt like I would rather work around more people my age so I answered Bubba Gump’s ad. I was hired 10 months ago and I have worked there ever since. I started out as a hostess, then started picking up serving shifts a few months later. I wound up being a dishwasher for a little while. They were short-staffed in the kitchen and I joked that I could do it, no problem. One of the managers bet me that I could not last one shift, so I accepted the challenge. It was one of the hardest jobs I have had. There are only short five-minute breaks and sometimes I would work from 3 p.m. until one in the morning. Dishwashing is really hard-core but at least I’ve never had to wear the shrimp suit. About four months ago I started working at Starbuck’s as well. I love that job! The manager and all my co-workers are so great. That is probably my favorite job yet. When I go back to my hometown of Salem, Oregon I will probably work at another Starbuck’s there. I plan on going back to Oregon State University to study for a career as an activities director for restaurant events. Between my two full-time jobs I work around 80 hours a week. It is really hard to find time to go out and enjoy all the beauty of Maui but I still have really loved all the time I’ve spent here. I learned a lot from working at Bubba Gump’s. I learned the responsibility of being a server and how to deal appropriately with different managers. I met a lot of good people at both my jobs and made many great friends. MTW

Puremovement on TV Saturday, 10:30 a.m.; Monday, 8:42 p.m. on Channel 52 [DANCE] The hip-hop culture has moved from the “underground” to the mainstream, that’s for sure. But way before Sprite and Orange County jumped on the bandwagon, there was Puremovement. Rennie Harris founded the dance group Puremovement in 1991 with the idea that “like all art, Hip-Hop expresses the universal themes that extend beyond the boundaries of racial, religious and economic elitism.” Puremovement performed here at the MACC in February. And as a part of the Artists in the Community program, the dancers gave free performances, taught movement demonstrations in schools around Maui County and filmed this show for Akaku TV, all while spinning on their heads—literally. Will Moore produced, directed and emceed the special, which features Harris’ crew performing all that is hip in an art form that is still “searching for validation.” While many people on Maui listen to hiphop, it is rare to have a well-known artist perform on the island. Perhaps it would do us all a lot of good to tune in and get a taste of something new... hip-hop in its purest form. This time do not miss the style and movement that has inspired youth all over the country. For more info on Rennie Harris’ Puremovement, visit www.rhpm.org. For more info on Akaku programming, visit www.akaku.org. [GABRIELLE POCCIA]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Spring is in the Air Friday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at The Studio Maui [DANCE] I love to watch spring unfold: people breaking up, getting together, flowers blossoming, the startling availability of orange and pink at the Gap. There has to be something to celebrate this glorious time of year, and there is! “Random Acts of Spring”—an ambitious community performance series designed “to provide Maui’s artists a forum in which to present their work.” They’re featuring choreographers David Ward and Renee Beauvais in a mix of modern, jazz and Japanese traditional dance performed by Akari Ueoka. John Grover and Leo Holmes will do their thing with acoustic guitar, vocals and original songwriting. Tallulah Bleu will perform an interactive beat box street dance and monologue from Tom Robbins’ Skinny Legs and All. Frank Kane and Wolf will act a scene from Waiting For Godot, Nico Rossi will present film shorts, Sunny Gorg will dance and Marc St. Pierre will do some comedic spoken word. Aerialist Kira Jones and singer/songwriter Lauren Pomerantz will be there, too. And Amy Chang is doing something involving music and dance but we don’t know exactly what. All sorts of stuff is going on—music, film, theatre and even acrobatics. Come help celebrate our community and the season. Tickets are $12 presale and $15 at the door. [REESE QUICK]

Friday, 8 p.m. at Mandala Ethnic Arts [MUSIC] I don’t exactly know what soul-folk/rock is. But if I had to define it, I would definitely consult Jillian Speer. An environmental activist, yoga instructor, artist, poet and songstress who has opened for the likes of Jewel, Michael Franti and Spearhead, 25year-old Speer is a well-rounded bohemian queen with a voice that recalls her Joni Mitchell/Joan Armatrading/Nina Simone influences. Plus, she ain’t bad-looking. That might be part of the reason why she has such a loyal following. And why her beautific mug appeared on the cover of Music Connection magazine, as well as on an exclusive entertainment segment on Oxygen cable network. But, to be fair, last year the LA Music Awards nominated her for “Best Folk/Rock Album of the Year” and she performed at the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City a couple years ago, so you know she’s got the stuff to back it up. Beauty, talent AND a social conscience? I suddenly feel like a female Howard Stern by comparison. Mandala Ethnic Arts is located at 29 Baldwin Ave. in Paia. Tickets: $10. For more info on her, check out www.JillianSpeer.com or call Mandala at 579-9555.

Midnite Friday-Saturday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s [MUSIC] Have you ever played the “what would you do with a billion dollars” game? Me too. I always said that I’d give everyone in the world a joint and a really great reggae album and see if that didn’t help us all calm down a little. The idea is a tad infeasible, however. So for now, I just keep an eye out for events where everyone is mellow and happy, and man-oh-man is there a doozy comin’ up! Midnite is one of the hottest upcoming roots reggae bands out there and is sure to put on an awesome show that will also feature Inna Vision and DJ Sol. Friday’s show is for kids 21-and-up and Saturday is the all ages show. Tickets $20 advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 8:30 on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday. You don’t want to miss a minute! The Reality of Now Sunday, 7-9 p.m. at The Studio Maui, Haiku [MOTIVATIONAL] Of course, I have my crazy moments but when it comes down to it, I’m not a very neurotic chick. I’ve lived with many, though. At the last house, there was about a week where I was coming home to find my roommate in a dark corner of the living room, clutching Eckhart Tolle’s Power of Now to her chest and weeping into its pages. “Everything okay, dude?” I’d ask, hoping for a short answer. “Why c-c-can’t I just live in the m-m-oment?!” she’d reply, to which I could only halfheartedly, albeit slightly amused, respond, “I think you’ve missed the point, man.” Obviously. Too bad she finally went back to L.A. or she could’ve gone to “The Reality of Now,” a seminar being held at the Haiku Marketplace to help explain Tolle’s popular book on the illusions of self and mind. The seminar is free, but go ahead and bring $20 for a donation. After all, who else is gonna explain this stuff? The Studio Maui is located at 810 Haiku Rd. in the Haiku Marketplace. For info, call 268-3300 or 268-3004. [REESE QUICK]

Doomed to be forever referenced as the least offensive Star Wars movie of the prequel trilogy Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith is a visually delicious film filled with ostensibly crowd pleasing (read boring) lightsaber battles that escort Anakin Skywalker’s violent transition into the persona of Darth Vader after he opts for the dark side’s unlimited power in an attempt to circumvent a predicted death of his first offspring by his clandestine wife Padme (Natalie Portman). Inane dialogue, a wretched performance by Samuel L. Jackson and indulgent pacing hamper George Lucas’ already clunky plot that finally brings closure to a story that didn’t need 20 years to tell.

Revenge of the Sith

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/140 mins.

“Popcorn movies have always ruled. Why do people go see them? Why is the public so stupid? That’s not my fault.” Since Lucas spoke those inciting words he’s gone on to become one of the

world’s richest directors alongside his cohort Steven Spielberg. It’s a cruel irony that Lucas says he wants to make art films along the lines of Koyaanisqati now that he’s finally finished his career-building monolith. It’s sad because it was his and Spielberg’s 1970s blockbuster “popcorn” movies that obliterated Hollywood’s pathway for socially conscious “art films” and left audiences in an abyss of commercially driven lowest common denominator movies designed to appeal to the inner child in adult audiences. You don’t have to repeat the words “Sith” or “Dooku” very many times to feel your IQ drop like a skydiver jumping from 15,000 feet. An interesting aspect of Lucas’ Star Wars chronicle is how much it tells about the director’s own assent/descent toward the dark side of greed. Lucas’ famously shy personality aligns as an alter ego to the passive Anakin Skywalker who memorably adopted a queasy subservient role in his initial romance with Padme that found him picking at his own navel until it bled. In Revenge of the Sith Anakin is haunted by nightmares about the death of Padme’s firstborn, and it’s not a far stretch to read that narrative thread as reflecting George Lucas’ own

fears about birthing yet another stillborn Star Wars movie. Anakin’s undisclosed marriage to Senator Padme Amidala raises a significant complication that puts Anakin in a superficially deadend situation. If their marriage is discovered then Anakin will be expelled from the Jedi priesthood and since Padme’s imminent child makes that disclosure probable Anakin adopts a passive route to gaining power by falling under the evil tutelage of the Republic’s Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (well played by Ian McDiarmid). The obvious responsible choice would be to boldly announce his marriage to Padme and devote himself to his family rather than continue going through life as a Jedi leader. Anakin’s story would have been much more complex if he had attempted to come publicly clean about his marriage to Padme and would have demanded more of Portman’s underused character. However, just as Lucas was drawn to a greed for power that excluded him from acting as a mature filmmaker, Anakin takes an easy way out and abandons his moral precepts. If you doubt that Lucas ever had ethical principles as regards to filmmaking, see THX-1138, which is an art film in the purest sense of the word. Regrettably, the abuse that Lucas suffered in Hollywood with THX-1138 convinced him to dumb down his approach to cinema in favor of popcorn profits. But does Revenge of the Sith accomplish what the limited constraints of the overall six-film narrative promise? I think that it does, but the film doesn’t come close to matching its visual color spectrum to that of its attempted dramatic and emotional content. It’s a top-heavy children’s film that tries to overcompensate for its childishness by ending with an overtly dark and violent finale meant to convince the viewer that dramatic satisfaction has been reached. It is always the filmmakers’ job to establish, in the opening moments of a film, the exact or even greater degree of violence that the audience can expect so that people put off by such an intensity of content can leave. Lucas doesn’t do that in here and even if for only that singular reason, Revenge of the Sith is an inferior movie. MTW

Dark secrets. Drug use. Family feuds. Hey, it’s a drama! Sigourney Weaver is Sandy, the mother of the middle-classed, seemingly normal Travis family. After tragedy strikes the Travises, the family gets all screwed up. The one-year look at this family crisis the movie provides is definitely long enough to understand the main point: this family is screwed up! Of course, in the end, everyone realizes how messed up they are, quickly recover, and live happily every after, right? Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams also star. Rated R. 112 min.

STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH - (PG-13) - Action/Adventure, Science Fiction/Fantasy - The furry and lovable Chewbacca makes his anticipated return to the big screen in the last installment (really!) of the Star Wars trilogy. Get ready to witness the transformation of young Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) into the evil and deep-voiced man in black, Darth Vader (because, let’s face it, without the voice he would not be cool). The rest of the gang is ready for some action as well, including the bearded Obi-Wan Kenobi (sexy Scottish Ewan McGregor, mmmmm), the Senator Padme Amidala and her insane hair (Natalie Portman) and best of all, Yoda! People go crazy for that little green guy, agreed?…Too bad we all know how this trilogy ends. See Film Critique, p. 28.

Now Showing A LOT LIKE LOVE - (PG13) - Romantic Comedy - Supposedly, this flick is about destiny, connection and the frequently fuzzy line between chance friendships and “happily ever after.” It traces the relationship of Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) and Emily (Amanda Peet) who met on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, each of them declaring that they couldn't be more wrong for each other. Uh, hello? Hasn’t everyone seen When Harry Met Sally?! Yeah, we all know how this one ends. THE BEAUTY SHOP – (PG-13) – Comedy – Here we are back in the chair again. Gina (Queen Latifia) has finally had it with her egotistical boss (Kevin Bacon). She ups and leaves, not only to open up a shop of her own but also taking a few of the key clients and shampoo girl (Andie MacDowell, Mena Suvaris and Alicia Silvertsone). Fixing up this rundown salon, Gina inherits a very colorful and sexy sassy new group of people, or just what is needed in a beauty shop—a bunch of chatty Kathy’s. CRASH - (R) - Drama - Doesn’t this happen in LA all the time: A Brentwood housewife and her DA husband. A Persian storeowner. Two police detectives, who are also lovers. A black television director and his wife. A Mexican locksmith. Two car-jackers. A rookie cop. A middle-aged Korean couple. They all live in Los Angeles. And, in the next 36 hours, they will all collide. HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (PG) - Action/Adventure, Comedy, Science-Fiction - Earthman Arthur Dent is having such a bad day—not only is his house about to be bulldozed, but he discovers that he has an alien for a best friend. Actually, that would be rad! Meanwhile, Planet Earth is about to be demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass (so very Jetsons!). The universe begins when the world ends, nothing is what it seems—even a simple towel is the most useful thing in the universe. Who knew? THE HOUSE OF WAX - (R) - Suspense - Why, this remake? And why, Paris Hilton?? A group of friends on their way to a college football game falls prey to a pair of murderous brothers in an abandoned small town (of course). They discover that the brothers have their own main attraction: creating an entire town filled with the wax-coated corpses of unlucky visitors. Now the group must find a way out before they, too, become permanent exhibits in the House of Wax. Hey, at least Paris is already halfway there! ICE PRINCESS – (G) – Romantic Comedy Don’t think this is another Ice Castles, people. It’s just another one of them formulaic, cute teen chick underdog battles against “the popular girls” to rise up the ranks and win... something. A trophy? The presidency? Oh yeah, selfesteem. Whoopee. We all know self-esteem gets you nowhere. Just look at Robert Blake! Stars Michelle Trachtenberg, Joan Cusack and Kim Cattrall. Anyway, it features the voices of Mel Brooks, Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear and, of course, Robin Williams.

KICKING & SCREAMING - (PG) - Comedy - Will Ferrell in a comedy? No, surely not! Strange as that may seem, Ferrell stars as Phil Weston, a normal guy who has never gotten his father Buck’s (Robert Duvall) approval for…well, anything he has done in his entire life (poor Phil!). A showdown between father and son occurs when Phil coaches his 10-year-old son’s soccer team and must defeat the team his (gasp) insanely competitive father coaches in order to win the league championship. While the PG rating implies clean laughs (no bringing of the green hat or Hank the Tank), watching Ferrell try to contain a bunch of 10-year-olds (because he’s 10 too, you know) is going to be funny.

SAHARA - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Explorer Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) takes on a treasure hunt in several regions of North Africa in search of a ship called The Ship of Death—why, Dirk, why?! Anyway, along with his smarty pants sidekick (Steve Zahn), they use their clever heroics to help out the beautiful Doctor Eva (Penelope Cruz), who believes this ship is the reason why there are a lot of mysterious deaths. DAY&NIGHT

As I walked in the foyer of the historic Iao Theater, past patrons munching on chocolate chip cookies and mixed nuts, I heard excited little voices from restless children waiting for the show to begin. It was the opening weekend of Honk!— a story loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling. The set looked liked something drawn in a fantastic pop-up children’s book. It was an animated contraption made of rotating panels that swirled pinks and blues and slid to create different scenes. From the moment the set’s sleepy farmyard awakened, I couldn’t look away. There were pretentious ducks, gobbling turkeys, curious chickens, mischievous cats and—what the hell, let’s throw in some jumping frogs, too. Four human-sized eggs filled a nest lined by cattails, where the ducklings hatched during the show. The musical journey of wayward duckling “Ugly,” played by Francis Tau’a, had me laughing and crying. Decked in an English schoolboy outfit, Tau’a kept the audience enthralled with his innocence and captivating voice. The duet he sang with Lisa Paulson’s “Ida” of “Hold Your Head Up High” immediately stuck in my head. But I didn’t mind. The mischievous cat played by Steven Nikolau had me laughing out loud as he showed the extent we sometimes go through to get what we want. Obsessed with duck a l’orange, Nikolau created a versatile character pulling from an endless bag of tricks, even opera. A game of cat and duck ensued, while the ugly duckling tried to find his way home. When Ugly’s irresponsible father Drake—actor Steve Hatcher—was left to look after the other ducklings, he sang about the perils of motherhood and how “this apron fits her best.” It was a moment for all moms to say, “I told you so!” After an encounter with the slightly misguided brigade of geese headed by P.J. Myers’ “Graylag,” Ugly stumbled into the company of “Queenie,” a pompous housecat played by Olivia Mora—that girl can sing—

and Liam Selwyn’s “Lowbutt,” a codependent, well-endowed hen. I rolled with laughter as Lowbutt desperately tried to convince Queenie that a scruffy tomcat was not the best for her. “Why should being different make me sad?” Ugly asked. But his sorrow quickly ended as an energetic and charismatic “Bullfrog” played by Tom Althouse hopped up onstage on trampoline lily pads and told him he can be loved, “warts and all.” Althouse, who also gobbled onstage as a turkey, delivered a high-energy performance. His commanding voice took the audience into a heightened frenzy of excitement. It’s no wonder he and Nikolau are part of a local improv comedy troupe, the Pono Players.

HONK! Last performances: Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, 5 p.m. Tickets: general admission $19, youth $13. Call 244-8760. Let’s not forget the kids! Emily Betham, Hayden Ezzy, Anneka Johnston and Tommy Rogers were adorable as the little ducklings in their bright yellow hoodies and the frogletts in bowler hats. Rae Ariel’s “Grace,” the mother swan, sang a stunning angelic soprano. Other standouts were Julie Kawamura, who brought superb fun to the boards as “Maureen” and Hoku Pavao’s touching performance as “Penny.” Local director David C. Johnston did an outstanding job of creating a rollercoaster ride of emotions. He had the audience laughing uncontrollably one moment, then dipped them into pathos the next. The evening ended in a standing ovation with the entire audience clapping in sync with the final number. With a loud and proud honk, Ugly spoke like a wise sage—“I love my honk and I love who I am!”—and in turn, gave us a gift we could all take to heart. MTW

If not now, when?

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Try watching TV with the sound turned off, or watching people dance without being able to hear the music. You’ll start to get the idea of what you ought to avoid this week. You’ve got two fantastic assets: your skilled, sensitive hands and your speedy silver tongue. Make them work together and you’re a star. One without the other and you’re screwed; phone conversations, emails and their ilk will likely yield the opposite of their intended effects. Steer clear, in favor of marionette shows, sign language interpretation or talking dirty while having sex— weirdly safe, fun places where you just can’t go wrong.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING! FREE Recycling Bins – And No Sign-up Fee! When you subscribe for 3 months of bi-weekly service – (A $25 value!) New customers only – offer expires 5/31/05

Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar Kapalua You're favorite restaurant is also an amazing place to work! We are seeking positive people for the following positions

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Sagittarians are at least as different from you as your polar opposite, Capricorn. They’re generally laid-back and easy-going where you’re passionate and—admit it, now—somewhat controlling. They shy away from sentimentality and expression of heavy emotion; you live for these things. So what’s going to happen when the moon waxes full in their sign on the 23rd? What happens to this abundance of emotional energy with nowhere to go? Ridiculous fights, that’s what. Massive dramas will erupt over the stupidest little things (and none of the important ones). Unwarned, it can really screw with you Crabs, who can get swept up in the mess so easily. But now that you know, I hope you’ll be avoiding this kind of thing (which might involve avoiding other people) like the plague.

HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Now that the sun has blown over into the windy terrain of those goofy Geminis, you have a chance to give special focus to the roles that silly sign usually occupies in your life: sexbuddies, sweet, casual longterm friendships, secret work allies, and the like. It’s hardly unheard of, but Geminis and Leos rarely hook up for the deep, heavy stuff. Your low-stress camaraderie is a blast, but it doesn’t always weather real hardship well. Keep that in mind when doors to deeper connections with Geminis seem to open this week. Really taking things there isn’t impossible, but it takes work and, probably, a long time. Could things quite simply be better as they are? Choose well; once you’ve stepped through one of these openings, there’s no going back.

If you feel that you have been potentially exposed to HIV and would like Free, Confidential and Anonymous testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. It is important to know your HIV status so that you do not unknowingly pass the virus to others, also early detection is vital to your health and treatment. The Maui AIDS Foundation now offers Drop-In HIV Counseling and Testing (No appointment necessary) Drop in hours are Mon.-Fri. 8:30am to 4:30pm, Wed. 8:30am to 7pm 1935 Main Street, Wailuku For more information on HIV/AIDS, STD’s including Viral Hepatitis and HIV Counseling and Testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. In Hana call 248-7801, Lanai 5656722, and Molokai 553-9086.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Heartfelt wishes can come true (or at least sort of true) this week. So, unfortunately, can heartfelt curses. Whenever you mix real feelings with your desires (whether positive or negative) right now, it’s liable to have some concrete effect in the world around you. I hereby drag out that tired cliché: be careful what you wish for. Feeling guilty (even in an abstract New Agey karmic way) at funerals isn’t fun. Now’s the time for your best, most generous and enlightened self to take the reins. Meditate as often as necessary. In other words, if you can’t think anything nice, don’t think anything at all.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Everyone plays this tricky game: convincing yourself that you want what you ought to want, instead of acknowledging (and going for) what you really want, no matter how socially, financially or aesthetically “unacceptable.” Libras, however, are especially susceptible to this curse. They often find themselves coolly married to people who fit some “ideal partner” image, instead of to those who arouse real passion. Attraction rarely conforms to your mental ideals. If you can let yourself pursue your lustiest, most powerful fantasies instead of your safest, “smartest” ones, your life will become much, much richer. It’s that simple.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) How long has it been, actually, that you’ve been holed up in your apartment, alone, listening to Dawn and Drew Show podcasts? I’m not saying you need to quit any of your favorite habits, but your substitutes for actual life are getting the best of you. Come on, go outside. Enjoy a little sunshine, maybe some human contact. All your secret, private pleasures will still be waiting for you when you get back. The beautiful thing is, if you manage to really involve yourself in what’s going on this week, you’ll still be able to enjoy them when you have time to, but you’ll no longer need them.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

A public health message provided by The Maui AIDS Foundation.

When your kid gets the chicken pox, you might want to make him wear mittens, to prevent scratching and scarring. You might want to take preventative measures yourself, to keep from creating similar unsightly blemishes in your life. Your temper is liable to flare this week, especially with the Sag Full Moon on the 23rd, and it might be best if you limit the kind of damage you can do, should you lose control of yourself. Protect yourself as well as those around you. Of course, nothing might happen. But wrapping yourself in an emotional mitten, limiting movement (and your ability to manipulate), might be a good idea, just in case.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) So you feel like a whore. So what? Everyone prostitutes themselves in some way at some point in their lives. It’s part of life. Whether you’re actually peddling your ass on a street corner or just selling your precious time, happiness and freedom in a corporate office, it’s all more or less the same. Sometimes you get a bum deal. You get your cash and realize it’s not worth whatever sacrifice you made for it. Oh well. It sucks, but there’s nothing you can do now—except learn from your mistake. Keep it from happening again. Study this lesson well, or it will, soon.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Bank on your brilliance. There are times to cruise along on your achievements and not push things too much, and then there are times when you ought to just cash in. This week it’s not enough to just let things happen, not when pushing will yield so much. Everything around you is soft and malleable, primed for shaping and maneuvering. A diligent, determined and ambitious Aquarian could put herself in an amazing position right now, without hardly offending or displacing anyone else. It doesn’t matter what your goals are—a little creative life-sculpting can bring you much closer to them, right now. Get started; I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t try.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You’re going to love this. You’re officially off the hook this week. You don’t need to deal with any real world bullshit at all. There’s no point, at the moment; you might as well ask your dog to do trigonometry. Bills, laundry, business crap—these are all in some incomprehensible foreign language right now. Instead focus on what is right up your alley this week: art, music, dreams, all that kind of rose-colored crap. It’ll feel good, you’ll get a lot done and ironically—albeit possibly in a very roundabout way—you’ll also get a lot closer to settling all the practical stuff you were avoiding in the first place.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You have no trouble indulging your whims. You want what you want, regardless of the assumptions reality attempts to impose upon you, and your life simply has to transform to accommodate your desires. You know from your experience that this often doesn’t work out exactly as you might wish. That might be the case this week, too, as your lusts (sexual or otherwise) conflict with your budget, values or the desires of those around you. If I were you, and they weren’t too negative or dangerous, I’d indulge them anyway. It might screw some things up in the short run, but in the long run, not letting an Aries be him- or herself is more screwed up by far.

Crazy shit could go down this week. Your trusted partner (business or romantic) could ditch you. You could lose your job, or your best work buddies. Anything and everything you take for granted could be set adrift. I know this kind of thing is especially alarming for you Bulls, but listen, don’t panic. What you need now is to focus on the new places you can explore, ahead of you on the horizon, not the boats that are threatening to capsize behind you. They’ll either sink or survive, but in the meantime, cast your nets wide for new connections—new boats. Prepare for unusual sources of connection and stability—they’re most likely to come from people you’d never expect.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Back to the Grind Last week I said that I would continue my “Early Days” saga, and tell you all what happened when I moved back to San Francisco seven years ago. And I will, eventually, maybe in some sort of strange sequencing inspired by the Star Wars series. For now, I’ll just catch you up on what I’ve been doing lately… A few Fridays ago, I invited Sasha out for an intra-island adventure. My plan was to leave the Moroccan Bayou in Wailuku, head over to Compadres in Lahaina to see Zero Tolerance and Corpse, then to Neptune’s in Kihei to see The Easy and finally, over to Paia to catch Catastrophic at the SandBar and Gomega at Charley’s. As long as she didn’t have to do all that driving, Sasha was game. I was sober but still, all I remember of that night is that by the time we left Lahaina, Sasha was so drunk she needed a kickstand. The next day, I went to the beach in front of the Four Seasons Wailea. Lounging on the sand, I was just minding my own business, gawking at all the 40-something women in tremendous shape and catching up on my reading when none other than Mr. Big—the Mr. Big, Chris Roth of Sex and the City!—walked by me. Me! I’d love to insert a little scenario here of how he strode up to me, cocked his head and smiled suavely, using those lips of his to ask if he could sit on my beach towel, to which I replied, “Abso-fucking-lutely!” and then we whisked off in his limo to the airport so that we could dine in Paris, have drinks in New York and make mad, passionate love in St. Barts. But yeah… none of that happened. He merely jumped into the heavy shore-break, swam around a bit, got out, shook off and walked back towards the hotel. Later, I hung out in the lobby, reading, while the resort musicians set up. Some guests walked by and asked if I would be hula dancing with the band later. I told them it was hard to say. The Wednesday after that, I had lunch with some friends and co-workers at Compadres. We had all finished work early and were celebrating with margaritas and beer, as we do. Mainly, it was a gripe session. One of our buddies—“Dude”—will probably never live down his reputation as a wild man, a party boy and a Casanova. He’s a good-looking kid, a surf instructor with a wry sense of humor and generally, an all-around nice guy. But he used to tear up Lahaina with his house parties and drunken antics. Plus, there’s that story of him flying through the front window of the Hard Rock Café. But anyway, he was at lunch lamenting about a houseguest’s out-of-control peeing. As in, the guy was having trouble with his aim. Eventually, our friend had to have a heart-to-heart talk with him on toilet seat etiquette. “You know when I sit you down to lecture you,” said Dude, “you’re really in trouble.” The following Friday, Kim—a.k.a. Paris Hilton or Chaka Bong, depending on whether she’s lugging her requisite six bags for an overnighter or she’s asking to borrow the neighbor’s paraphernalia—came over for the weekend. We met up with Sasha and her hottie visiting friend Neil at the Ale House in Kahului, then we ambled on to the SandBar and eventually up to Casanova in Makawao. It was there that I resumed a nasty little habit of telling guys off after a couple of tequila shots. But actually, they always ask for it. As in, “Sam, why do you think I’m stupid?” I guess I feel that’s it’s my duty to tell them. But then I just go on and on and I feel like such an asshole the next day. It’s really not as gratifying as it should be. I just wish they’d stop asking. On Saturday, after the Ulupalakua Thing, the same group went over to Elan’s house in Paia for dinner and a Surfing Goat cheese-fest. Then, while Sasha, Neil, Kim and Reed were snoring on the couch and/or “watching” The Incredibles, Elan and I snuck away to the SandBar to catch the metal heads of Anesthesia. The next day, Kim, Reed and I tagged along with our dinner-making, congas-playing friend, who was invited to a party in Ulupalakua. It was at a beautiful house with spectacular views, a 10-piece jam band on the lanai and many earthy, parental-type people dancing and having a good time. After making several older male friends, Kim and I went looking for food and found it in—of all places—the kitchen, where we promptly set up camp. After a while, a bespectacled gentleman came into the kitchen, looked at me, looked at the food behind me, looked at me again then walked away. “I guess I scared him off,” I said to Kim, laughing. The man turned around and smiled. “I wasn’t scared,” he said. “I just didn’t see anything I wanted.” Samantha Campos is down with alienation and methodical anonymity, as long as she doesn’t spill her beer.
