This Just In! I’ve just been handed a special bulletin from the Maui Civil Defense Agency announcing a High Surf Advisory for north-facing shores of Maui. Now I’ve just been told that our correspondent Mick E. Finn is right now at the scene and will provide us with a live update. Mick, are you there? Can you hear me?
[sound of clinking glasses] Editor: What was that, Mick? Finn: Yeah, I think I’m going to move to some higher—what? What was what? Editor: Oh, for a moment I thought I heard a couple glasses clinking together.
Finn: I can, Chief.

Editor: Mick, where exactly are you right now? Finn: I’m standing on Hawea Point, not far from on the island’s northern most point. It’s a promontory jutting out from Oneloa Bay. Editor: Very good. Now can you set the scene for us? What’s going on? Finn: The scene is, well, dramatic, Chief. The surf is just churning at a fantastic rate. I’ve never seen the ocean look so ferocious, as though it were about to rear up and swallow us whole. The air is filled with spray and a roar that’s been getting steadily louder over the last 15 minutes or so. Can you hear it over the mic?

Finn: Ha! That’s a good one, Chief. I’m standing right now on a rocky promontory getting dowsed with some incredible waves. Editor: I know. That’s why it was so—hold on a moment, I’ve just been handed a bulletin… Hmm, that’s strange. It seems the High Surf Advisory I just announced a few moments ago was actually issued back on March 19. And that it was cancelled two days later. According to today’s weather report, the seas are calm all around the island. Finn: Uh, hmm… that’s strange… Unknown voice: Would you like another gin and tonic, Mr. Finn? Finn: [muffled] Please. One for the lady, too. Unknown voice: Very good, sir.
Editor: No, I can’t. Editor: Mick, was that a waiter I just heard? Finn: Well, it’s something else. There were a few people out here earlier—curiosity-seekers, I think—but they’ve mostly taken off.

ehbrah@mauitime.com Thank you very much for moving here from Virginia to leech off of me. You stayed in my home, ate my food, violated what little privacy I had—even stole jewelry from the shop that I convinced to hire you. Oh, and you totally fooled me into letting your drugaddicted boyfriend stay with us for a couple of weeks. I thought I was helping you out, and that you would appreciate it. But what did you do? How did you show your appreciation? You came into my home while I was away at work, broke into my bedroom and took the money I was saving for that month’s rent. People wonder why I let you into my life in the first place—why I put up with you so much, even when you were stabbing me in the back. And I admit it—I was stupid to trust you. It was very stupid of me to think that you would treat me—your own sister—better than you treat anyone else on this planet.

‘The Recycling Circle’
Walking Around Money
How a mortgage broker became the island’s best recycler
PHOTO: JESSICA PEARL
Since the Bottle Bill’s implementation in January, recycling has moved to the forefront of Maui’s collective social conscience. The bill encourages us to recycle our aluminum, glass and plastic bottles with necks at redemption centers. But that’s all it does—encourage. Ultimately, recycling is left to individuals and local companies. I recently asked Maui Recycling Group Executive Director Wilma Nakamura who she thought was the best business recycler on Maui. Without hesitation, she said Four Star Mortgage in Kahului. “People who recycle have a more expanded vision of the world and feel responsible for the garbage they produce
McCreight and his recycled bench
Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a May 31, 2005 press release “The Council [on Revenue]’s robust outlook of an additional $157.9 million for [Fiscal Year] 05 and $1.36 billion for FY 2006 to 2011 reaffirms what we have been saying, that it’s time to allow our residents to benefit from the state’s growing, vibrant economy by providing immediate tax relief.”
What she didn’t say The state could also use the money to start meeting her president’s No Child Left Behind standards. Or we could start addressing that pesky backlog in school maintenance. While we’re talking backlogs, we all know our roads— such as they are—need a lot more resurfacing than they’re getting. And those bypasses we keep talking about but never build? State money could sure help there. Then there’s the possibility of funding a true statewide curbside recycling program. Paying off our massive statewide debt is also a possibility. -Anthony Pignataro

and about their [role] in actively supporting the community,” Nakamura said. “People like David [McCreight, Four Star’s president] support the community culturally and environmentally on Maui.” By donating time, money and services to groups like the Aloha Shares Network—a landfill diversion project run by Maui Recycling Group—Nakamura said Four Star Mortgage embodies environmentally responsible business on Maui. McCreight then passes the word onto real estate agents, housing contractors and prospective buyers to recycle through the Maui Recycle Group and Aloha Shares Network. Nakamura said he also helps pickup and deliver recycling and donates office supplies and equipment to Aloha Shares. I stopped by their offices for a look. Walking me through his complex, McCreight pointed out large burlap recycling bags in the mailroom for paper and boxes under each desk for recycling more paper. There was aluminum can disposal in the employee lounge as well as outside, to keep ants out of the building. McCreight told me his company recycles toner cartridges from all its photocopiers and fax machines—about 100 per year. They also encourage their employees to bring recyclables from home. “Recycling is a common sense approach,” McCreight told me. “We’re an island state and there is only so much room for landfill. It’s all about public responsibility and consciousness for the ‘aina, where you live.”

In an effort to complete “the recycling circle,” Four Star employees bought a 100 percent recycled picnic bench. It sits in the small courtyard of the offices, adjacent to Kahului harbor. McCreight said Four Star also encourages others in the community to recycle. McCreight said he tells all his condominium buyers about the importance of recycling household goods and unused appliances. He tells them how to contact Aloha Shares so they recycle their old refrigerators, stoves and other kitchen appliances. “I had a condo buyer who wanted to get rid of her refrigerator,” he said. “It was given to Aloha Shares and the refrigerator ended up in a nurse’s kitchen at Maui Memorial Hospital.” As long as Maui lacks a Material Recovery Facility (MRF)—a onestop recycling center—then local businesses and residents will have to keep taking care of matters themselves. Most, it seems, have not decided to follow McCreight’s lead. For more information on recycling or the disposal of unwanted appliances, contact the Aloha Shares Network at 878-6666.

June 2, 2005 was the first day in five years that Casanova’s general manager Steven Burgelin had to sit at the defendant’s table in a Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearing. He was there on one count of failing to prevent a crowd from accumulating in front of his bar during one of his Wednesday Ladies’ Nights in December. It was a charge even board chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama called “minor.” Burgelin’s guilty plea cost the popular Makawao restaurant and nightclub $1,000—$500 more than Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge asked for—though the board did agree to suspend $500 on the condition that Casanova not get busted again on the charge this year. The fine came despite the fact that Burgelin hit all the right notes in his statement to the board. He explained to them that he’s opposed relieving crowds at the bar by putting a second one out back. “I don’t want to sell faster,” he said. “We chose to slow down consumption.” He told the board that he usually has four bouncers working the floor on Wednesday nights, with another two at the door, but on the night in question his “floater”—the one who actually patrols the crowd—called in sick. And he said that he’s taken steps so he’ll always have four bouncers in the future. Hedge countered by saying Casanova has been repeatedly warned the last few years to “keep the aisles clear.” She also said the club has been recently admonished for breaking the county’s Footloose law: allowing people to dance outside the designated dancing zone. Ironically, the Adjudication Board seemed to have no idea as to the popularity of Casanova’s Ladies’ Night. When board member M. D. Alborano asked Casanova President Stefano Segre— who sat next to Burgelin during the hearing—to explain the draw, he told her that it was simply a tradition. “You have a gold mine!” she told him. “I have a Wednesday gold mine!” he said.

Everett Dowling must be laughing his ass off right about now. Why shouldn’t he? The Akaku board of directors is tearing itself apart in public, and he’s the guy who stands the most to gain. The board met last night, or rather tried to meet last night, but couldn’t reach a quorum. Then those board members who actually showed up started accusing those who didn’t of trying to “stonewall” any discussion of a proposed funding agreement that would see the public access cable station moving a quarter of its state-funds to Maui Community College. Using terms like “abdicating his responsibilities” and “classic coup d’etat,” the members who oppose the agreement told The Maui News that the board majority supporting the agreement is trying to freeze them out. Now I have no doubt that that’s what’s happening, but everyone seems to have forgotten that all this began a couple months ago when longtime Akaku critic Dowling—who opposes the station’s unedited airing of public land-use hearings—flew to Honolulu and pushed a couple bills through the legislature that would have slashed Akaku’s state funding. The board’s own settlement agreement pushed the bills aside, but if they continue battling amongst themselves over this, the legislature could do worse things to the station than merely curtail their funding.
Looks like no more Hula Bowl for Maui. Boo frickin’ hoo. It’s up and hauling it’s sorry self back to Oahu. Actually, today’s Maui News makes it sound like no one—including hizzoner Mayor Alan Arakawa—is sorry to see it go. “Quite frankly, it hasn’t been great economically for the county,” he told the paper. Arakawa and other officials added that relations between the promoters and the county have deteriorated so much that county managing director Keith Regan has been “playing phone tag.” And all this comes after the county made repeated concessions to the promoters—like selling beer in War Memorial!—the attendance sucked, getting eclipsed by other sporting spectacles like the Mercedes Championships, Maui Invitational and Sir Wilfred’s Wednesday night chess matches. What’s most amazing is that anyone’s shocked by this. This is the Hula Bowl we’re talking about. Sure, Maui’s a popular vacation destination, but who goes on vacation to see a third-tier college bowl game?

Flash! U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, Hawai’i) just announced that U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D, Hawai’i) is going to appear on this month’s edition of Case’s television show Congressman Ed Case Reports. Over the course of a half hour, you’ll laugh as Inouye—now in his 43rd year of congressional service— chuckles over how then Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn joked with him in 1959, observing that “there aren’t too many one-armed Japanese around here.” You’ll laugh again, though probably not so much, when Inouye talks about how he “tried my very best to avoid” serving on Sam Ervin’s Senate Watergate Committee. I’m not making this up, people! It doesn’t get much better than this! You’ll be thrilled to hear Inouye predict that “tourism will continue to be a force in the local economy” and shocked to hear that “the demand for housing risks agriculture.” All as the conversation builds to an exciting climax! “And of course, there are some interesting tidbits of political history and trivia that come to light during Case’s conversation with Inouye,” Case’s press release reported. “For example: what do the first congressional terms of Inouye and Case have in common? Tune in!” Yes, tune in, though no one’s quite sure when, since Case’s office says that Akaku airtimes “are pending.”
COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
SATURDAY, JUN. 4 I’ve got nothing. You?
SUNDAY, JUN. 5 Break out the party hats and noisemakers, folks—today’s Her Magesty Governor Linda Lingle’s birthday! It’s the big 5-2 for her, so you just know things got crazy at her party tonight. Somehow I never got my engraved invitation—probably lost in the mail or something. But she and a couple hundred of her closest friends and political contributors are got down this evening at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The official Linda Lingle Campaign Committee sponsored the bash, so you know it was a real blowout. After all, it’s not everyone who can afford an entrance fee of $100 a head, which gave it that air of exclusivity while still allowing party-goers to chow down on “heavy pupus.”
MONDAY, JUN. 6 Word comes down that we all need to stop criticizing U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i). Seems we’ve all been too tough on the “humble man” whose “heart is so pure,” according to U.S. Delegate Eni Faleomavaega (D, American Samoa), quoted in today’s Honolulu Advertiser. For those of you who’ve been living in a cave for the last decade, Akaka and U.S. Senator Ted Stevens (R, Alaska) are pushing the Akaka-Stevens Bill through the Senate in an effort to bring some degree of self-determination to the Hawaiian people. With no sense of irony, Akaka and his supporters say this means giving
them the same rights and privileges currently enjoyed by Native Americans. Some of the more militant Hawaiian activists respond that they’d be much happier with a complete reversal of the 1893 American seizure of Hawai’i. Now we can all argue the merits of these respective ideas—abject poverty and casinos on one hand, monarchy and no more Fourth of July fireworks on the other—but I think one thing we can all agree on is that Akaka, like all U.S. Senators, is about as far from “humble” as a human being can get.
TUESDAY, JUN. 7 Just perusing Maui’s sexiest newspaper— yup, I’m talking about Connections, the official quarterly of the Maui Chamber of Commerce. Their Summer Issue is smokin’! Sure, they’ve got a lot of dull stuff about “legislative outcomes” and “a new era” for the Farm Bureau, but they’ve also got some pretty racy stuff. Like the photo on page seven, showing three guys at some golf gala flipping burgers. Look carefully at the dude on the left—he’s wearing a shirt saying in bold letters, “It ain’t gonna lick itself.” Awww yeaaaahh! Anthony Pignataro’s most recent novel, The Amazing Adventures of Fantastic Freddy and his Happy Gang of 17, was not published by Knopf last year. MTW

The Triathlete
“And it’s my kind of a course. A typical triathlon course has a long, flat bike ride. I like that it’s hilly and goes out over really beautiful terrain. The toughest part is training. Getting ready for the race. You just have to work out so much.” At her peak, Thomas spends 15-20 hours per week training, working out each morning, and frequently in the afternoon as well. If training for a triathlon could be a part-time job, Thomas would nearly have enough hours to warrant insurance coverage. “It’s a tough little race because of the terrain,” she said. “When you hit the run at the end, you have the heat. Running out on the road through the lava is like torture. It’s super hot.” She also sees these challenges as a benefit. If you live on Maui, that is.
Lisa Thomas and this year’s King’s Trail Triathlon tions to name a few. But the race does have a regal quality about it. After crossing the finish line, competitors are treated like royalty with free post-race massage and meal provided by Outback Steak House. As a Maui Master’s Swim Club coach I’ve watched Lisa Thomas rise through the ranks since the race’s inception five years ago. Finishing first in her age group the first year of the race, Thomas finished third woman overall in last year’s competition. I asked Thomas, a Maui resident for 10 years, what she likes most about this race. “It’s here on Maui, our own turf,” she said.
In the 16th century, Maui’s king and his messengers used the Honoapi’ilani Trail to travel the island. On June 12, 500 triathletes will wake up before dawn so they can gather along the trail at the Maui Prince Hotel in Makena at 7 a.m. They’ll be part of the King’s Trail Triathlon, an Olympic distance event consisting of a .9 mile swim, 24.8 mile bike ride and 6.2 mile run. It’s hosted by the Maui Multisports Club. Today’s triathletes might have a few advantages over Maui’s ancient royalty— paved roads, a pair of Nikes, and aid sta-

“It’s actually to our advantage being here, being able to train in the heat on the course,” she said. “And, the bike course—it’s just so hilly. A lot of the people that I talk to are just not from hilly areas and don’t train riding hills like that.” “It’s a very difficult Olympic distance triathlon,” said race organizer Aaron Altura. “The bike course if very difficult because of the climb up Kaukahi Street. It’s a very steep hill, and you have to go up it twice. The course is two loops.” I asked Thomas if it was tough racing against her friends. “No, it’s more fun,” she said. “It’s definitely competitive, you have friends who are really good athletes. I think it just makes it a lot more fun because you know the person. You’ve probably raced against them before and there are times where maybe they’ve beat you and vice versa. “It’s a whole different feeling when you have people that you know instead of going into a race that’s all strangers. It just adds to all the camaraderie on Maui that the athletes have.” Speaking of camaraderie, each year at the King’s Trail triathlon Thomas finds herself in the company of 325 racers from the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. “A lot are first-time triathletes, newbies trying to raise money for the LLS,” Altura told me. He estimated that 24 states are represented. “I think it makes it more positive,” Thomas said. “It inspires me when I see someone running, and they have a shirt with a picture of someone they loved who they are running for—their loved one who suffered and who they have lost. It makes you realize even more how alive you are doing this race and how lucky you are to have your health.” MTW

The agency that oversees Spain’s stock market announced it will implement a rule starting in July requiring each director of an exchange-listed company to disclose not just names of family members but of any other “affectionate relationship,” straight or gay, that the director may have. The purpose is to help monitor insider trading. Also, in Nanjing, China, municipal officials were ordered in May to disclose any extramarital affairs, as a way of reducing officials’ payoffs to mistresses, according to Xinhua news agency.
Police in Springfield, Ore., charged Pamela Ann Hemphill, 51, with theft in April after she allegedly snatched neighbor Walter Merritt’s Charles Schulz-signed, original Peanuts cartoon strip, locked herself in a bathroom, removed her clothes, got under the shower, wet the cardboard thoroughly and finally flushed the pieces down the toilet. Hemphill declined to explain and Merritt said he had no clue as to motive.
CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Among the most striking federal government “pork” grants funded in November was $1.5 million for a new bus stop (several times more than the typical cost) in front of Alaska’s Anchorage Museum of History and Art. To replace the current kiosk, the city’s transportation director said he imagines a generous upgrade, including perhaps a heated sidewalk to deal with the snow: “We have a senator [Ted Stevens] who gave us that money, and I certainly won’t want to appear ungrateful.”
INEXPLICABLE An undercover sheriff’s deputy—whose name was not disclosed in a May news report—filed a lawsuit recently against the Florida Hospital in Orlando because, he said, in October 2000 medical staff injected his hip with what appeared to be cosmetic makeup glitter instead of pain medication. The deputy said a four-inch mass was removed and appeared to contain specks of green and red sparkle, and that pain at the site continues.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Police in Hackettstown, N.J., charged Juan Vargas, 29, with public intoxication at a Dunkin Donuts shop after spotting him speaking into his wallet as if it were a cell phone (February). And in Danbury, N.H., in March, Steven Metallic, 39, was arrested after a twohour standoff in which he filled his mother’s home with propane gas and threatened to blow it up. Metallic finally fell for a police ruse when they pretended to leave. Officers who remained behind captured Metallic tiptoeing out of the house.

Four former patients of clinical psychologist Letitia Libman sued Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva, Ill., in March and April for malpractice, including claims that Libman’s hospital treatments for neurological disorders included tarot cards, love potions, DNA-based hexes, patient nudity and self-mutilation. Libman also allegedly bragged of her travels among space aliens. In May, the lawsuits were amended to include Libman herself as a defendant, a move that the plaintiffs initially resisted because they feared Libman’s witchy retribution. MTW

I will always believe in punk rock, because it’s about creating something for yourself. Part of it was: “Stop being a sap! Lift your head up and see what is really going on in the political, social and religious situations, and try and see through all the smoke screens.” - Joe Strummer of The Clash, July 2002 The Pauwela Cannery, one-time Haiku pineapple factory, is now home to a myriad of windowless shops—surfboard shapers and screenprinting, mainly—as well as several small studios for local punk and metal bands. The three members of Otis meet here, every Thursday and Sunday night. Down a long corridor of unmarked doors and connecting passageways, the entrance to the band room is virtually indistinguishable. But inside, the cramped room explodes with loud riffs, heavy drumbeats, massive speakers, variegated posters of the Misfits, Iron Maiden and a wall-sized confederate flag. “That’s not ours,” the drummer is quick to point out. There’s a momentary lapse in decibel level as the guys discuss which song to play next. As they launch into opening chords, there is a false start—the bassist isn’t singing his part and subsequently, the guitarist loses footing. Apologies are made, the band begins again and the revi-
The members of Otis met a couple years ago at church. Their love of Joe Strummer—leader of legendary British punk band The Clash—brought them together. Named for a friend’s dog, they’ve been performing in public for eight months. Nate Robertson, drummer, is the most outspoken member and “de facto manager” of the band. Currently working as an apprentice at Hot Rod Ink, Nate is covered in tattoos, including a very prominent spider on his throat. Over the past few years, he’s played in local hardcore bands Left 4 Dead, Rubberbandz and Absence of Void, as well as Lawai’a, an eclectic band that fuses island music with soft rock. He started playing drums seven years ago, influenced by the hard and fast sounds of Rancid, Pennywise and later The Specials and Madness. Nowadays he listens to Only Crime, Black Flag, The Slackers and System of a Down. But no other music affects him as much as punk rock. “It’s not so much a music as it is your outlook on life,” he said. “Punk started as a bunch of pissed-off kids who wanted to make a difference.” Nate considers punk’s core to be protest and rebellion. And in this case, he wants to use this message to educate people. “Our message is kind of to Christians,” he said, “to sort of wake up and realize that there’s a bigger world than your real estate business and your golf games.” Nate’s younger brother Noah is the band’s lead vocalist and bassist. He’s spent the last five years leading popular hardcore band Absence of Void. Soft-spoken and polite in person, Noah is an impassioned and articulate performer on stage, spewing the political lyrics of his brother and friend with convincing venom. The Robertson brothers moved to Maui 20 years ago. They had a strict religious upbringing—their parents went to an offshoot of Hope Chapel in Haiku—and weren’t allowed to listen to any rock music on the family stereo. But by the time he was 13, Nate got a hold of some headphones and the stuff his friends were listening to, and he was hooked. Noah soon followed suit and started playing bass, with guidance from older, more established friends from the Crunch Pups and Khrinj. Otis’ guitarist, Steve Hart, grew up in a Christian household in Michigan. But when he was 16, he got involved with drugs and moved out. Fortunately, he says, with the help of mostly “Christians and gays” in his 12-step program, he
But in a remarkably contemporary manner: during one recent sermon, Pastor Craig Englert ran a PowerPoint Presentation of biblical passages on a giant screen under the title “The OT” done in the same graphics style as the popular Fox television series The OC. Otis members say they’ve received a lot of support from non-Christian bands but have had arguments with people at church about their politics. In fact, they say that’s one of the reasons why they go. “The right wing of Christianity opposes gay marriage,” said Nate. “That’s where we differ. We can’t have a true democracy or republic if we segregate based on sexual preference. If homosexuality is a sin— I mean, according to the bible, premarital sex is wrong, so how is common law marriage okay?” “I believe that the Bush Administration is
sobered a year later and has been clean ever since. He’s been playing guitar for over 20 years, mostly in San Francisco. He also went on 27 North American tours as a roadie, and was a guitar tech for the infamously outrageous Mike Patton-led rock band Mr. Bungle. Since moving to Maui a couple years ago, Steve’s been in school full-time to get a doctorate in English. He also works parttime at Request Records in Wailuku. Like the other two members of Otis, he feels the premise of punk rock is to express the ideology of a frustrated nation. “I have a 14-year-old son,” he said. “And I can’t afford to not voice my dissent. In four more years, he’ll be 18 and I’m gonna go out swingin’ if they’re gonna draft him.” Steve was introduced to leftist politics through punk rock bands like the British

anarchist collective Crass, Belfastbased Stiff Little Fingers and, of course, The Clash. “I grew up [with friends in] anarchist groups who said the solution is to get rid of government,” said Steve. “But greed is a part of human nature. Anarchy’s impossible in its pure form.” “If it were up to me, anarchy would be the best government,” said Nate. “In democracy, the main premise is ‘mankind is good, is the answer.’ We don’t believe that. Mankind is destructive without a higher power to set down some rules. Anarchy works on kibbutz in Israel. They believe they have a reason for doing what they’re doing. Bob Dylan said ‘you gotta serve somebody,’ so you might as well serve someone who cares for you.”

When Nate isn’t apprenticing at the tattoo shop, he works construction with his brother. Sometimes the band has gigs on the weekend, usually at some community center or park. But every Sunday morning, Nate goes to church at 7 a.m. and plays drums in the 8:30 and 10 a.m. worship services. Hope Chapel is a contemporary Christian church serving about 1,200 parishioners on Maui through its 18-acre facility in Kihei. The sermons are heavy on “inspirational worship” and folk rock-tinged hymns, and are largely in-depth discussions of biblical verbatim taken straight out of the Old Testament.

turning people away from God,” Steve said. “I don’t see much of a difference between fundamentalist Christians and fundamentalist Muslims—both are against freedom and say very similar things.” “Rob Finberg [Christian Fellowship Church pastor and candidate for State Senate] said to follow the Old Testament and stone all gays,” said Nate. “If I were gay, how would I ever want that church? The Bible’s clear that you’re saved by grace. David screwed up his whole life and Jesus said he was a man after his own heart.” “If everything goes unchecked,” Steve said, “then who will speak up for the voices of dissent? Because Bush and his administration have hijacked the definition of Christianity, the dialogue of what Christianity means and stands for has rapidly dissolved into a gay-bashing, rightsrevoking, capitalist-globalist environment.” Nate and Steve write the lyrics for Otis. They prefer not to use the standard “drink, fuck, fight” rhetoric of some punk. Instead, they focus their songs on politics. And they don’t swear. They say they don’t want to give other Christians an excuse to stop listening before they hear their message. “We want people to be offended by what we’re playing,” said Nate. “Not what we’re saying… We’re not gonna judge or hit them over the head with it. I will talk to them about my faith. I wanna be a band

with a message. And have my faith as a part of it.” Their song “In Control” is about how “your mind is where revolution starts, before it ever gets to guns.” “Who Would Jesus Bomb?” calls out Christians who support war. “We feel it’s our moral imperative to stand up against this,” Steve said. “The 10 Commandments say, ‘Thou shall not kill’ and ‘Thou shall not covet.’ There’s no gray area in that commandment.” “We believe Jesus’ message is of love and acceptance,” said Nate. “Not of condemnation or judgment.” “As Leo Tolstoy pointed out in The Kingdom of God,” said Steve, “it is our Christian duty to stand up against war of any kind, to serve the weak and most importantly, to be a religion of inclusion.” “I like being called a ‘believer’ instead of ‘Christian,’” said Noah, “and not be associated with the religion.” “‘Christians’ has such a bad connotation—it’s all the judging,” said Nate. “I believe if Jesus came, he wouldn’t associate with a lot of churches. I’ve had pastors say ‘Well, you’re not going to change anything.’ But I don’t want to be content with complacency.” “I wanna say I tried,” agreed Steve. So Otis has a platform and a purpose. But are they any good? Often, when bands are labeled as being “Christian,” acceptance within the community is such that it doesn’t really matter what the music sounds like, because the message is what matters. And that can be the ultimate turn-off for secular music listeners. A “Christian punk band” can easily turn into the latest novelty act without the musical talent to back it up. “I don’t wanna sacrifice the art,” said Steve. “The music is just as equally important. I write songs that I’d listen to.” “If your music’s not good,” Nate said, “nobody’s gonna hear your message. And you can be marginalized as a band if you expose your beliefs.” On Saturday night, June 4, Otis took the stage at Life’s a Beach in Kihei. A pulsing, melodic rhythm erupted. Tension filled the dark bar. A crowd quickly gathered along the perimeter of where a mosh pit would be—should be, were this any place but Maui—silently appraising the speedy, three-chord rock of Otis’ straight-ahead punk. But an unexpectedly dark, sinister and driving sonic undercurrent built in force until the whole bar was riveted, all eyes on the band. Everyone raised their beers in salute. “This song is about really powerful men,” Steve told the crowd mid-set, “who get really poor men to go to war and fight for them so they can make more money.” The crowd looked confused. Steve smiled and shook his head. “Drink up!” MTW

There are certain times in a person’s life when you have that deep down palate-watering craving for fish and chips. And I’m not talking delicate, flakey lemon caper mac nut-encrusted filet in a white wine reduction. No, I’m talking hot-n-greasy-napkin-soaking-burn-yourfingers-fish-n-chips. It’s this random craving that keeps fish restaurants in business (I mean, come on—how many people eat fish and chips everyday?). And it’s this random craving that brings hundreds of tourists and locals to the little dive on the corner of Baldwin and Hana Hwy in Paia. Just the other day this craving landed me in a line 20 deep and out the door at The Fish Market. It was hot as hell. I’m sweating, Mr. Man in front of me is sweating, the cashier is sweating and the cooks are most definitely sweating. I’m tempted to walk out the door and seek out some breeze but then I look at the sweating man eating fish while sitting beside me and I remember why I came. The colorful menu above the counter helps: Ahi! Ono! Mahi! Lehi! Opa! Uku! All fresh and ready to go! I quickly contemplate the pastas—choice of chicken or fish—because it’s topped with white sauce. My favorite! Sandwiches and burgers (chicken or fish) look good, too,

but I’m totally filet-o-fished out after my road trip last week. Then I catch a glimpse of the South of the Border Fish Quesadilla and my mouth begins to water. Or was it the smell of fried food emanating in the greasy air? That would be the classic Fish and Chips. Do they have Chicken and Chips? Why not? Finally the sweaty woman takes my order: Mahi Fish and Chips and a soda, which comes to $10.89. I sit down on one of the long picnic type tables next to a group of sweaty German windsurfers and wait. The communal aspect of the eating grounds make me a little uncomfortable so I pass the time looking at the old fishing photos framed on the wall. Finally they call my name. My food is ready. The first bite of deep fried Mahi satisifies my random craving. Warm flavors and grease… just what I wanted. Also with that first bite is that not so comfortable burning sensation on the top of my mouth that comes when you eat food too soon after it’s been fried. But I continue, wanting more of that delicious fish. The French fries are perfect, too—
The Fish Sandwich not too thick, not too soft. They’re crispy, but not too crispy. By now my mind has forgotten the heat and the sweat and the communal dining. I’m in accelerated enjoyment mode and I eat fast before that greasy food feeling comes and I regret the whole thing. That leaves just the coleslaw. I’ve always said there are two kinds of people in this world: those who like coleslaw and those who don’t. I’m a Don’t, but for the sake of this story I taste it. It’s simple, light and satisfying. A little too juicy, but good. At this point I can feel that greasy food feeling coming on, so I get up to walk off the calories on the Paia streets. I’m now fully satisfied. That is, until the next random fish and chips craving comes around. MTW

Russell Collier Server, Ruby’s Diner I was born and raised in Haiku. I love being a server. I wish I had known about it sooner! I have worked here since it opened about three years, four months ago. I was working as the manager of Sbarro pizza in the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center when Kirk, the owner of this Ruby’s, offered me a job. I had never been a server before but it had so much less stress than the other job, that I chose to be a server full time. I’m also the floor supervisor so when I’m working, if there is an incident with an unsatisfied customer or something like that, then I handle it. I try to multi-task. I work in the mornings and in the afternoon from about 5:30 a.m. to three in the afternoon. In the morning I do things like count the bank and make coffee, various things so the managers can cruise when they come in. I’ve also just been hired as a ticket agent for Aloha Airlines. A friend of mine has recently moved to the mainland and I was concerned about how I would afford to go see him. Another friend who had been hired at Aloha told me that I should apply because you obviously get good deals on plane tickets. I’m really happy about my new job and the opportunity. I will be working both jobs full time—Ruby’s in the day and Aloha Airlines at night. I really respect the management at Ruby’s. It’s the first job that I’ve had where the managers work with you and you’re not just working for them. They would never ask you to do something that they would not do. The people who come in are also great. I’ve had a lot of job opportunities. I have a real estate license and commercial driver’s license but I chose to stay at Ruby’s. Ruby’s has sort of been my growing up point. Before, I could never understand how other people could pay their bills and rent and still have enough money to eat. I owe Ruby’s for that. They are my moneymaker. MTW

DEBORAH LEE GALESI
LADY IN WAITING
(OIL ON LINEN & WOOD, 15.75 X 11.8125)
INFINITE DANCE OF BLISS
DEBORAH LEE GALESI, having lived various lives between the Universe and Mother Earth, is born once a gain, in Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A. As a small child, she discovered a great love for oil painting, and was encouraged by her teacher to follow this strong passion. Eleanor Egg was her first private art instructor. After some years, Deborah graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and psychology. Then continuing her private lessons with Maestro Raymond Whyte and Maestro Gene Scarpentoni, from the “Art Student’s League,” New York City, she was able to show her work in New York, Colorado, New Jersey and France. Her work is collected privately in the United States, France, Japan, Italy and Mexico. Deborah taught for some years in the U.S.A. and after Meastro Gene Scarpentoni’s death, she travelled all over Europe in search of a new Maestro. She found herself in Florence, Italy, and as she continued her artistic path, Deborah began studying at Villa Schifanoia, but not to her satisfaction. Therefore, she happily found herself as an apprentice with ben Long, a student of Annigoni specializing in portraits. Today, Deborah shows us various styles in her work: Conceptual, Impressionism, Symbolism, Naif, Fantatique, New Realism, and/or Surrealism depending on her spiritual moments. Thus, her paintings are based on the vibrations received from places or lifetimes, or from space without time. In reality, since childhood, Deborah has always been attracted to Florence by the magical energy of the Renaissance, which allowed her to know her inner self more fully. Deborah’s paintings transmit many messages for humanity, so that humanity may remember the true fundamental values of love, life and nature. Her art captures the invisible world and metamorphosis, essential and important. These are the keys to believing in our dreams. Deborah’s aspirations and dreams have always been to live in a New Renaissance (Rebirth) with balance. She decided to call the “Avanti! Sempre Avanti!” She launched an International L’Atelier in which we can get a creative vortex of energy flowing for working together and far apart in harmony, love, brotherhood and sisterhood. The artist, Deborah Lee Galesi, now resides in the state of Hawaii on the Island of Maui. After getting married and spending several years remodeling her home, the fine artist is ready to share her work with her native country, the United States of America. Deborah Lee Galesi has recently returned to the Islands from a very successful show in New York. The following article was published in the Gallery & Studio Magazine (written by critic, Maurice Taplinger).

of the centerpieces of Deborah Lee Galesi’s recent solo exhibition at the 584 location of Montserrat Gallery (which will include her work in its year-round OsalonneBroadway on moving to its new space in Chelsea), was a large oil on canvas called “Look Inside,” which took its inspiration from the biblical Psalm 23: ”You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” The painting presented a kind of freeform contemporary version of The Last Supper, populated by an eclectic cast of characters, some in fill color, others in grisaille, representing several nationalities. They were gathered around a circular table split down the middle, as if by an earthquake, its pyramidal opening revealing a rainbow-vibrant realm of cosmic phenomena, mountain ranges,m waterfalls, winding rivers and verdant foliage. Within this vast visionary landscape, which could represent an earthly Paradise, a woman in native dress bathed an infant in shallow water, while white swans glided along, porpoises left through the air in formation, and a luminous angel waded nearby. For all its multilayered imagistic complexity, as the title “Look Inside” suggests, the message of the painting seemed profoundly simple: Look past the conference tables where bargains are struck between government leaders and politicians negotiating the fate of humanity to one’s own inner being, where the real truth of existence lies within easy reach. One of the things that makes Galesi’s work do fascinating is her willingness to take risks that would daunt a less intrepid painter, as seen in another large canvas called “Infinite Quantum Leap: Infinite Possibilities,” which has become an emblematic work of her career, having been repeatedly reproduced in the Village Voice and other publications. In this composition a prehistoric hunter and another figure who appears to be a medieval knight brandishing a long sword ride the back of a fire-breathing dinosaur, while a huge wave of water whooshes up behind the huge creature like a jet-trail, a white dolphin discernible within its white foam. And far be it for Galesi to stop there: the figure of a shaman sitting in the lotus position holding a ceremonial staff and a sort of sparkler god with luminous, wiggling rays emanating from his entire body can be seen levitating in the deep, nocturnal darkness surrounding the main figures! In this large oil, too, the artist appears to be paying tribute to indigenous inspirations and imparting wisdom channels from the ancients. Yet the real triumph, in strictly aesthetic terms, is how successfully Galesi balances all of these disparate images within a composition that goes far beyond the efforts of other international Neo-Expressionists in her all-out willingness to share the truth of her experience with the viewer. For Galesi, a native of Patterson, New Jersey, this means calling upon the technical skills that she honed at the Art Students League in New York City and during a long periods of study in Florence, Italy, where she soaked up the methods of the Renaissance masters who were her earliest inspiration, in order to make every image that she paints a palpable representation of her inner quality. This a complex undertaking indeed, since Galesi’s inner reality is fed by a variety of esoteric sources, which include her fascination with everything from Native American Culture to the art of the Etruscans and the ancient Egyptians, as well as the New Age theories of
(OIL 48.125 C 48.125)
Deepak Chopra, among any number of other passing interests which invariably find their way to her pictures. An image especially emblematic of Galesi’s spiritual path is the oil on canvas she calls “Infinite Dance of Bliss,” in which a figure that appears to be a symbolic self-portrait floats above a volcanic landscape in a stratosphere where smaller beings of pure light seem to surf on streams of purplish illumination emanating from the stars. Here, on a canvas whose perfectly symmetrical square format enhances the composition’s sense of infinite space, is a vision of transcendence to rival those of no less delightfully daft a British visionary than the great William Blake! And while this could seem an enterprise fraught with peril for a contemporary painter, Galesi possesses both the technical skill and the spiritual conviction to make the painting succeed. Even more startling in conceptual terms, yet just as successful in its own manner is the large oil called “Swept Away by the Dolphin Vortex,” in which a dolphin with the body of a woman rises like a Botticelli Venus out of the sea, set against a watery swirl that gives Galesi the opportunity to flaunt her virtuoso painterly skills in one of her boldest, most dazzlingly Expressionistic compositions to date. Deborah Lee Galesi has already amassed an impressive exhibition history around the country and in various places abroad: France, Japan, Australia and particularly Italy, where she is especially esteemed. She has also exhibited in New York City in the past. However, the sheer range and scope of her most recent solo show at Montserrat Gallery (which included many more paintings than those described here, among them smaller works such as the pensive nude “Solitude,” presenting a more intimate side of her talent) seemed to make is a landmark in her career.

A Clean Beach? You Don’t Say! Next Thursday, noon to 4 p.m. in Lahaina [ENVIRONMENTAL] Matt Price wants to clean the beach. He’ll start by combing the area from Mala Ramp down to Puamana park in Lahaina. But he needs your help. Volunteers can gather at Kamehameha Beach Park at 505 Front Street to help clean the rubbish that clutters our beautiful beach. Groups of 10 to 20 will be leaving from the park about every hour to clean different areas of the shore. And organizations like Hui O Wa’a Kaulua, the canoe club at 505, Surfrider Foundation, the Surf news network, Huliau, the organization of the seven surf schools of Lahaina, and various others have donated time and money to help bring people down to help. Surfing Magazine is sponsoring Lahaina’s event as one of its many summer solstice projects. A future issue of the magazine will be featuring a 12-page story about this summer’s different activities and beach clean-ups that will take place all over the world. Billabong, Von Zipper and the Surfrider Foundation are also co-sponsoring by donating shirts and other giveaways for volunteers. Food and beverages will be served during the clean-up and a BBQ will follow the event from 4 until 6 p.m. Then there’s an after party at the Hard Rock Café with free admission if you participate in the beach sweep. Otherwise, there’s a $6 charge if you don’t. At the party, the John Moore Project will rock an acoustic set and Sirrus B from Paia groove for the rest of the night. They’ll also be showing Intervisions, a 30-minute surf documentary on the search for the new surfing hot spots around the world, on the big screen behind the stage. And Wayne-O, from Maui Surfboards, has donated a surfboard that will be raffled off to some lucky volunteer, along with door prizes from Rip Curl and Local Motion. Get the time off to come down to the beach and have a positive impact on the ecology of Lahaina’s shoreline. Kokua with your neighbors, have a great time by the water then party like a rock star. It’s all in a good day’s work. [GABRIELLE POCCIA]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Dunk A Politician Friday, 8 a.m.-12 noon at Cameron Center [FUNDRAISER] Here’s an event the whole family can find entertaining and donate for a good cause. The J. Walter Cameron Center is celebrating its 7th Annual Bazaar with a summer party chock full of goodies for everyone. There’s going to be some arts and crafts for sale, a silent action, live entertainment, a jumping castle for the little ones, delicious food—like Clara Sodetani’s homemade mango pie—the “Roselani’s Great Ice Cream Race” and a dunking booth featuring some local celebrities and politicians. The ice cream eating contest features teams of three that race to build and then devour an ice cream sundae. Youth teams cost $15; business corporate teams of three adults costs $50. The winners get some prizes, as well as all that yummy ice cream, and proceeds from the “race” benefit Maui Economic Opportunity’s Youth Bank programs. Get down with the music of T&J Classics, Wesley Furumoto, Kawika Medrano and Buddy Jantoc. Talented dancers of Madelyne Pascua’s Dance International Production and the Ola Hou `O Na Wahine, (the women of new life) dance group will also perform. Got an urge to dunk a Maui politician? Here’s your chance! Last year some dunkees included Mayor Alan Arakawa, Councilman Joe Pontanilla, Councilman Danny Mateo and Councilman Mike Molina. You get to make a donation to your fave Cameron Center organization to dunk someone (gotta uphold some moral standards!). Don’t miss this opportunity to have some fun and do some good for the community. Call the Cameron Center at 244-5546 for more info. [LINDA GAMPERT]

Ah, Cinematic Decadence!
The AntiCardiologist
Starting Wednesday, see p. 26 for times
Friday, 7 p.m. at the Cameron Center Auditorium
[FILM/PARTY] All year long it’s been the same old story; why, why, why did I miss the film festival in Wailea last year? In that moment of hesitation, I sentenced myself to a year of sub-par, dumbed-down movies. I actually paid to see Dairy of a Mad Black Woman! I have to stop kicking myself, though. The film festival is right around the corner, and I will soak up all the cultural literacy I can, starting this Wednesday. If you want to go all out, you can buy tickets to the Opening Night Twilight Reception for $195. That one includes a decadent menu, wine by DeLoach Vineyards, a Bombay Sapphire MauiTini Bar, a Bacardi bar and, of course, tickets to the evening’s double feature. The Celestial Cinema will be showing The Perfect Man, a Heather Locklear/Hilary Duff flick about a daughter trying to keep her mom from falling for a dud and Deep Blue, a documentary on the ocean. If you’re still raring to go after that, The Big Bang Opening Night Party will be going on at Mulligan’s on the Blue. $40 will get you in to enjoy heavy pupus, a Bacardi bar and live music by Michael Franti (and trio). I can’t wait! See you guys there. [REESE QUICK]
[LECTURE/HEALTH] Twelve years ago, says the latest press release from the Vegetarian Society of Hawai’i, four cardiologists told the psychologist Dr. Neal Pinckney that he’d die unless he immediately underwent heart bypass surgery. Pinckney refused, opting instead to change his diet. Today Pinckney is alive, and three of those four cardiologists are dead. Now Pinckney— who founded the Healing Heart Foundation—will tell anyone who wants to listen tips on reversing heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure (Here’s a hint—eat more plants). As always, there will be free refreshments. For more information, call 575-7694. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY
Marital Dis Pitt and Jolie slum it as clashing assassins The attractive onscreen union of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is the only thing Mr. & Mrs. Smith offers an audience beyond a relentlessly repetitive series of gunfights and car chases wherein so many bullets are fired that you feel like you’re witnessing a full-blown war. John and Jane Smith are a married couple of hired assassins who have managed to keep their similar occupations concealed from one another until a double-booked hit pits them against each other.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
★★★★★ Rated PG-13/115 mins.
Much destruction of shared personal property occurs before John and Jane team up to battle against their many well-armed attackers. The movie is pornography of violence that plays out like a remotely operated video game spattered with droll asides and sarcastic marital exchanges. Untalented screenwriter Simon Kinberg (XXX: State Of The Union) wrote Mr. & Mrs. Smith as a thesis for his master’s degree at Columbia University. The script reeks of a nerdy college student using inside humor to impress his friends. Jane’s female-run Assassination Corporation is located on the upper floors of the Empire State Building while John’s hit-for-pay offices are stuck in a grungy garage atmosphere. Jane works with a team of badass hotties while John plays second fiddle to a mama’s boy boss Eddie (Vince Vaughn), who lives in a squalid house with his off-screen mother. Eddie has quick fire jokes galore, but Jane’s comrades-in-execution are all business. This meager background of superficiality is all that supports John and Jane’s extended divorce discussion that’s facilitated by fury and fire. For her part, Jane is more cold-blooded than John and makes several very sincere attempts at killing him. John, on the other hand, is more caring and far less willing to see any real harm come to the woman he comes home to every night for dinner at seven. Kinberg bookends the movie with direct-to-camera couple’s therapy sessions that play out like high-quality demo reels for Pitt and Jolie as they answer an unseen interviewer’s spicy questions with barbed evasive responses. The segments are lightly amusing and could have helped reduce the monotony of the movie if Kinberg had used more of them as timeout therapy visits for the couple of “five or six years” to voice their mutual aggression. The highlight of the movie for Jolie’s equally distributed male and female fan
It must suck to be them base comes when she poses as a dominatrix prostitute to get close enough to her mark to carry out a hit assignment in the privacy of a plush Manhattan hotel room. Beneath a stylish raincoat Jolie wears fishnets and a shiny black corset that becomes the stuff of fantasy fulfillment on her tall feline frame. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) indulges the goofy naughtiness of the scene as Jolie straddles her prey with riding crop in hand before ending his life on a festive note. Jolie’s Wild Wild West-styled window descent from the high-rise hotel to a busy sidewalk far below, via a cable-extending purse, closes out the scene with appropriate panache. It’s the one set piece in the movie that works because it riffs on Jolie’s infamous appetite for fetish while giving her character an appropriate cartoon quality of cavalier physical prowess. The film toys with role reversals for John and Jane wherein she represents a pantswearing hot-headed male stereotype and John fills a sensitive female cliché attempting to reconcile with his violence prone partner. The story proposes that by attempting to kill one another, the couple discover the previously obscured source of their mutual attraction. This problematic narrative sphere could potentially have been made to work if the screenwriter had paid considerably more attention to the relationship at the heart of the romantic comedy. Mr. & Mrs. Smith becomes a chore to sit through as soon as the short-lived glamour of Jolie and Pitt succumbs to a flimsy plot that’s protracted much further than the uneven tone can support. Audiences will have to take responsibility for editing the movie by walking out at the 95-minute mark when the film should have ended. MTW

Cinderella Man - PG13 - Daily (11, 12:20, 2:50, 3:30), 6:40, 7, 9:45, 10
ADVENTURES OF SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL IN 3D - (PG) - Action/Adventure, Kids/Family - Here comes another flashy kids flick from the same director responsible for the Spy Kids series. This is about 10-year-old Max who is an imaginative boy, forced to spend a summer alone with only his superhero friends, Shark Boy and Lava Girl. When his crazy summer is over he tells his family and friends all about these two characters but no one believes him. But then the heroes emerge out of space and take little Max along on a mission to save life on their weird planet. And hey, it’s in 3D! HIGH TENSION - (R) - Art/Foreign, Suspense/Horror - The previews for this movie don’t reveal that it’s in French and has English subtitles. That’s probably because this movie can’t have much dialogue, just a bunch of screaming and crying. All Marie and Alex want to do is study for their exams at Alex’s family farmhouse. Unfortunately for the college chicks a serial killer charges into the house and abducts Alex. Marie is then left to save her friend, so she goes after the serial killer herself. Serial killer vs. innocent college student—never heard of that one before! THE HONEYMOONERS - (PG13) - Comedy Ralph Kramden and his wife Alice struggle with money despite Ralph’s attempts at get-rich-quick schemes and a motivational speaker tape series. They have some money saved up, so they decide they want to buy a Brooklyn duplex with their best friends, Ed and Trixie. But whoops, Ralph manages to lose their saved-up money when he mixes it up with another one of his money-making schemes. Why couldn’t he have left the money alone!? Now he’s lost their money and Alice as well. Ralph is going to fight hard to get his marriage and money back. Hmm... maybe sell more tapes? MR. & MRS SMITH - (PG13) Action/Adventure, Romance, Thriller - Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star in this movie that brings domestic abuse to the big screen. Secret assassins they are and now their next targets are each other! Mr. and Mrs. Smith chase each other around with guns, shout out some cheesy lines and then fire off another round. If they loved each other they could just call it quits but this is one messed up case of “I do.” People will go to this movie to see the hotness of Angelina and Brad or maybe for some reassurance in their marriage? See Film Critique, p. 24.
Now Showing CINDERELLA MAN - (PG13) - Drama - Set in New York during the Great Depression era, this tells the true story of heavyweight champion James Braddock’s (Russell Crowe) rise to stardom. There aren’t any glass slippers or magic pumpkins in this film but there’s a lot of drama, as Braddock struggles to overcome poverty and provide for his wife (Renee Zellweger) through boxing. Directed by Ron Howard, it’s nice to see Crowe back in some Gladiator-type action in this over two-hour long flick. Scary fact: Ben Affleck was going to play the role of Braddock back in 2000, let’s all breathe a sign of relief that he didn’t! THE INTERPRETER - (PG13) - Drama, Thriller African-born U.N. interpreter Silvia Broome, (Nicole Kidman) inadvertently overhears a death threat against an African head of state scheduled to address the United Nation's General Assembly. Of course, she realizes that she has become a target and that no ones believes her, especially Tobin Keller (Sean Penn), the federal agent charged with protecting her. KICKING & SCREAMING - (PG) - Comedy Will Ferrell in a comedy? No, surely not! Strange as that may seem, Ferrell stars as Phil Weston, a normal guy who has never gotten his father Buck’s (Robert Duvall) approval for…well, any-

Uh, to the moon, Alice? thing he has done in his entire life (poor Phil!). A showdown between father and son occurs when Phil coaches his 10-year-old son’s soccer team and must defeat the team his (gasp) insanely competitive father coaches in order to win the league championship. While the PG rating implies clean laughs (no bringing of the green hat or Hank the Tank), watching Ferrell try to contain a bunch of 10-year-olds (because he’s 10 too, you know) is going to be funny. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN - Action/Adventure, Drama and Romance - (R) - Now here is a common stranger in a strange land, finds himself thrusted into a decades long war. Ultimately, he must protect the people of Jerusalem from overwhelming forces while striving to keep a fragile peace. Oh yeah, and he falls in love with an exotic and forbidden queen, and rises to knighthoodom. What a guy. THE LONGEST YARD - (PG13) - Comedy - This remake of the 1974 Burt Reynolds classic stars Adam Sandler and, um, Reynolds again as current and former football star, respectively, who wind up in stir together. They end up putting a team together to play the guards and hilarity ensues. At least, it did back in ’74. Also stars Chris Rock. LORDS OF DOGTOWN - (PG13) - Drama - This movie is a based on a true story of dudes who revolutionized skateboarding in the 1970s. They managed to bring back skateboarding and made it more rebellious and badass. “Dogtown” refers to the formerly dangerous neighborhood between Venice and Santa Monica in California, where they skateboarded in empty Hollywood pools. Their crazy antics allowed skateboarding to gain respect and become an international sport. Some drama takes place when the success the guys get from skateboarding makes friendships hard to keep because everyone is worried about himself. MADAGASCAR - (PG) - Comedy, Kids/Family and Animation - Ah! Finally a movie with stars we can respect: a lion, a zebra, a giraffe and a pregnant hippo (voiced by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett-Smith, respectively). See, the animals were all “residents” of the zoo but when one of them disappears, the other three go looking for him and all four end up getting captured, put in boxes and shipped back to Africa. Only, something happens with the ship and the four wash up on the shores of Madagascar, having to fend for themselves after being “cared for” by humans all their lives. Yeah, I know, it sounds fishy to me, too, but that’s just half of it! Also stars (the voice of) Cedric the Entertainer. MONSTER IN-LAW - (PG13) - Romantic comedy Okay, hasn’t this story been told already? Charlie Cantilini (Jennifer Lopez) has finally met the man of her dreams (geez, J-Lo, another one??), Dr. Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan). There's just one problem—his overbearing and controlling mother (Jane Fonda). Also stars the hilariously sassified Wanda Sykes. SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (PG) - Drama - Pants that travel? A sisterhood of pants?

I think girls will even be embarrassed to go see a movie with such a lame title. But there you have it; the traveling pants and these pants sure get around! Four friends are out shopping when they find a pair of pants that fit all of them perfectly. Hmmm. Then they decide these pants must be magic, so they buy them and send them to each friend for one week over summer as a way to stay in touch. The movie has a good cast (Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel) and a promising storyline, so if you can get over the title—and I’m sure your boyfriend/husband won’t, so don’t bother—it might be worth seeing.

Get ready to witness the transformation of young Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) into the evil and deep-voiced man in black, Darth Vader (because, let’s face it, without the voice he would not be cool). The rest of the gang is ready for some action as well, including the bearded Obi-Wan Kenobi (sexy Scottish Ewan McGregor, mmmmm), the Senator Padme Amidala and her insane hair (Natalie Portman) and best of all, Yoda! 35 MM SHORT FILM SHOWCASE The Big Empty This “bittersweet tale of Alice, her vagina and the infinite nature of the tundra” won an Audience Award at Malibu and a Grand Jury Prize at the USA Film Festival. Just to warn you guys out there getting excited—the movie’s about as graphic as a Hallmark Hall of Fame picture—but it will pique your interest. Not Rated/21 min.
Deserted Short film by David Karlsberg. Not Rated/25 min.
Fellini’s Donut A guy—not Homer Simpson—tries to find the perfect donut. The journey becomes an existential quandary in this Fellini spoof that asks questions like “What deep, dark secret must be hidden beneath a thick facade of frosting and sprinkles?” and “Can perfection be found in a pastry that was incomplete to begin with?” Not Rated/ 8 min.
Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey This loud and flashy movie follows the urbanrhythm group Stomp as they use their famous percussion skills to show… um, stuff, I guess. Look, these guys are fun to watch. Why do we have to look for something deep? Locations include India, the Kalahari Desert, Japan and beautiful Brooklyn. Not Rated/40 min.
DEEP BLUE Critics are calling this one Winged Migration under the sea. Viva Slack-enco! The Tex-Mex music of Maui’s Joe Cano I had just finished dinner with some friends in Ka’anapali. But oh, what were we to do next? The cool night air encouraged something exciting. We grabbed a paper and sat down on a bench to peruse that evening’s event listings. Some things were too far, some too familiar, but then the words “Joe Cano at Paradice Bluz” jumped from the page. And we were off. Descending the stairs into the smoky, dark club, we passed the candles, bricks and leather that make everything feel sexy there. And then there was this great music—beautiful Spanish beats that stole my attention. I took a seat on the black leather couch in front of the stage and cuddled up with my gin and tonic so I could better take in the sounds streaming before me. The six-man band included Cano and his guitar, a bassist, keyboard player, percussionist, backup singer and guest conga player. They complemented each other beautifully and created a sound rich in diversity and cultural fusion. It was relaxing and stirring all at the same time. I sat back and watched people dance to a cover of Santana’s “Maria, Maria.” Some of them were graceful, some delightfully awkward, but that was irrelevant. After the show I asked Cano how he felt after such an inspiring set. He was down-toearth and to the point. “Great, awesome,” he said. At first, I thought this brief encounter told me all I needed to know about his Spanish rock with a little island folksiness. But actually, it’s Cano’s diversity that grants him so much acclaim. He’s capable of anything from polka, country, reggae and salsa. When I spoke to him last week he told me about another sound sensation he’s working on: “Slack-enco.” He described it as a mix of slack key guitar and flamenco. He says it will bring together his passion for island music and Latin beats. Where did this Joe Cano come from and why hadn’t I seen him sooner? Well, it’s no fault of his. He’s been on Maui for a while now—since 1979 to be exact—but he was born in San Antonio, Texas. His father, Jose Cano, was also a guitar player and one of the pioneers of Tex-Mex music—a style blending traditional Mexican with American music, giving a voice to border cultures. Jose taught Joe how to play, eventually grooming him into a world-renowned musician.

Cano was sitting in on his father’s band practice by the time he was seven. As a teen he was playing with Jorge Santana. He started his first band while still in junior high. Its name, “Grito” (The Scream), purely captures every artist’s desire to be heard. And heard he was. His legendary talent allowed Cano to perform with musicians like Al Di Meola, Tom Scott, Sheila E., George Benson and Willie K., all of whom played a role in giving him the complex sound that pulls from many backgrounds. Diversifying Maui’s music scene is something we can all be grateful for. Not that I don’t
love Marty Monday at the Hard Rock, Tuesday techno at Hapa’s or the nightly Jimmy Buffett covers on every street corner in Lahaina. But Cano sprinkles jazz in the moonlight and polka on the palms. He smears the cultures of his crowd into a big beautiful mess. The night we experienced his culturesmeared “Slackenco” was great. Cano will be touring Europe for a couple months, but keep an eye out for his return. Despite his busy schedule, Cano still enjoys what he does. “Playing my music relieves stress,” he said. “I love to play for my girlfriend.” I bet she loves it, too. I know I did. MTW

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re the skinny kid who’s been taking the long way home from school to avoid the bullies who threaten you daily. Consequently, you’ve been missing out on a lot, and not just your favorite afternoon cartoon. But luckily this week you’ve got someone on your side who’s able to stand up to those you can’t face—s/he might even be one of the former bullies. Sticking to your safe, self-damaging habits despite this alliance isn’t doing it, or yourself, justice. Take the short route home from school and add some things back into your life that you’ve been missing, because now you can.
“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Sometimes you simply rub some picky people the wrong way. It has nothing to do with your value as a person. Maybe it’s some kind of chemical pheromonal thing. In certain folk, you produce instant irritation. I don’t know why you’d let it bother you so much, though. This phenomenon happens to everyone (you actually suffer it less frequently than nearly every other sign). This week might be challenging, as you’re likely to be forced to interact, at length, with one of those who finds you irksome. Don’t let it get to you, since there’s nothing you can do about it, and trying only makes things worse. Just be yourself. Nine times out of 10, these guys come around when they’re forced to. Once they get used to your scent, they might find they actually like you quite a lot.

Cancers aren’t particularly materialistic, but there’s no denying you like being comfortable. However, this week you need to shed even your penchant for coziness, because almost everything important you could get up to lies well outside your comfort zone. Oddly, the main challenge here is not getting stuck on missing some of the amenities, emotional or practical, you’re used to—or worse, whining about their absence. Once you’ve finally accepted that you’ll need to get your hands dirty and work up a sweat, with only a cold shower to look forward to afterwards, the rest will be a piece of cake.

NOTICES
Procrastinating now would be stupid. Even more so than usual. Simply delaying one extra day would mean the difference between success and complete, mortifying failure. Being laidback, patient or lazy at this point could cost you everything on the table, and then some. If you can possibly act now, do it. Waiting only makes the situation less viable, more likely to explode in your face. This week’s astrological influences are positively screaming “Now or never!” Get off your hot little ass and make it happen immediately. If you go for it later instead, you’ll just be knocked right back on it.

I finally saw the new Star Wars flick a couple weeks ago. It didn’t make much of an impression on me, despite my sci-fi geekhood. In fact, five minutes after I walked out of the theater, the only thing I could recall vividly was Natalie Portman’s abysmal acting. Now, about you: You’re doing fine. In some ways you’re better than you were last month. But you’re not really shining, much like that film. Sadly, since your performance lacks highlights, people are likely to focus on its lowlights, if they notice anything at all. Luckily, you’re not an already-finished piece— you’re still a work-in-progress. In other words, Ms. Portman may be stuck with her embarrassingly wooden performance, but you’re not. Step it up.
If you feel that you have been potentially exposed to HIV and would like Free, Confidential and Anonymous testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. It is important to know your HIV status so that you do not unknowingly pass the virus to others, also early detection is vital to your health and treatment. The Maui AIDS Foundation now offers Drop-In HIV Counseling and Testing (No appointment necessary) Drop in hours are Mon.-Fri. 8:30am to 4:30pm, Wed. 8:30am to 7pm 1935 Main Street, Wailuku For more information on HIV/AIDS, STD’s including Viral Hepatitis and HIV Counseling and Testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Screw your reputation as a badass. You have nothing to prove. We already know you’re strong, and definitely not a quitter by nature. But does that mean you have to be stupid? All signs indicate that you need to retreat from this battle. Back off. It doesn’t mean you’re weak, just that this particular scenario isn’t meant to be. If you try to force it, you’ll simply fail spectacularly and look really stupid in the process. Please, baby, let go of the ego bullshit. Heed the advice of your friends, family and me, and call it quits, just this once.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Diligently avoid relying on luck this week. That bad habit of yours could get you crushed under a bus or something, as Murphy’s Law is powerfully in effect at the moment. You can’t prevent the countless minor accidents that will befall you—bumping into doorframes, tripping over cracks in the sidewalk, and stepping on toes left and right. Don’t sweat it—these are forgivable and reparable offenses, unlike dying. Avoid dangerous situations this week, and that includes crossing the street against the light. Just play it safe for once, since luck isn’t especially on your side. Who knows? It might be an interesting change of pace.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I’m sure, in your most frightened moments, you wish you could put a magic forcefield around yourself. It would shield you from fire, flood, heartache and bird flu. But in your bravest moments you know that even if you could protect yourself from these things (and you can, to some extent), life without risk isn’t all that fulfilling, interesting or worthwhile. There are times to be cautious, and times to put it all on the line. You know which this is. You’re walking the narrow line between boldness and cowardice, but you can’t keep doing it. You’ll fall off (into fear) or step off (towards courage) any minute now. Which you do is up to you.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’re from such different worlds that you have trouble recognizing what’s special about the other. You’re a scarab, she’s a spider. Sure, you blundered into her web, but you’re too big for her to eat, and you just messed up all her hard work with your buzzing around, without once appreciating its beauty. And her eyes aren’t equipped to notice the iridescent prettiness of your shell. Your encounter might simply be an unfortunate coincidence, not kismet, as you’ve both been fantasizing. But what the hell do I know? Well, I know this: unless you really start to understand her—and vice versa, naturally—you’re screwed. Take a class, get counseling, do something. Or just give it up.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Admit it, you cultivate mystery. It’s partially a defense mechanism; if you shroud yourself in smoke and mirrors, no one ever gets to realize or notice that you don’t quite understand yourself. You’re confused more often than you’d like to admit, in other words. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it is something to cop to. Blaming someone for not being able to wrap her head around what you’re about is hardly fair, considering it’s beyond your own capability as well. I’m not asking that you unravel the enigma that is you (as if that was possible). I’m just asking that you forgive others for being unable to do so.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You’re being held back by rubber bands, thousands of them. Stretchy emotional elastic is preventing you from going where you want to go and doing what you want to do. You’re only just realizing it’s there. Before now, that flexibility imparted the illusion of freedom. Now that you know the truth, you’ve got a choice: Can you live within the admittedly spacious and flexible confines your bonds define? After all, you didn’t even notice them until now. Or should you snap those metaphorical rubber bands? You’re certainly more than strong enough, but be warned: if you choose this route, it’s going to hurt, at both ends.
BOOK YOUR AD TODAY! Call 661-3786x5 by 4 pm on Monday to get your ad in Maui Time Weekly!
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Why you’re trying to tone down your idiosyncrasies is beyond me—it’s not like you’re the weirdest weirdo out there. It’s also not likely that anyone who’s lucky enough to get to be intimate with you won’t find out about them anyway. If they’re going to be repulsed or frightened by what—in the grand scheme of things—isn’t very repulsive or frightening, wouldn’t it be better that you found out now, before you got more involved? I say wear your freakhood badge on your sleeve, where everyone can see it. It might mean fewer people are interested in you. But you could also look at it another way: those remaining are actually interested in you.

HOLOHOLOGIRL
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS
The Paleozoic Era: Pre-Early Days, Part I Oh yeah, ain’t talkin’ ‘bout love My love is rotten to the core Ain’t talkin’ ‘bout love Just like I told you before, yeah before - “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘bout Love,” Van Halen, 1978 My mom never liked to stick around in one place for very long. But she was young. She had me when she was 18, in Bakersfield, Calif. of all places, so it’s no small wonder she wanted to get the hell outta there immediately. But why she picked San Jose first, I’ll never know. After that, we lived in Beverly Hills for a few years. We were by no means wealthy—we lived in a small apartment right across the street from my elementary school. But my mom entered what I thought was a repulsive phase of dating rich older men. And they loved her, too—she was the epitome of the “tall, blue-eyed, blonde with big boobs and hair to match” that men in Southern Cal coveted. I grew up thinking I was an anomaly— short, dark and round with frizzy black hair. I repeatedly asked my mom if I was adopted. She didn’t appreciate that much. My first crush “Mickey” was this cute, scruffy kid with a loopy grin. I used to hang out with him after school. He had long, feathered hair like David Cassidy and eyes like… well, like Dean Martin. Actually, he was Dean Martin’s grandson. He dumped me before we hit fifth grade. I remember going to various friends’ houses—James Caan’s niece, Richard Pryor’s daughter, that girl from Annie—and wondering what they did in all of those rooms in their threestory mansions. Many of my pals were Jewish, too, so if I spent the night on the weekend, I had to go to temple on Saturday. Even though I didn’t understand a word of Hebrew, I didn’t mind it ‘cause they kept feeding me cookies. Most days after school, my classmates and I would walk down Rodeo Drive to the Haagen-Daz and get ice cream cones. Then someone’s mom would buy us pizza at Jacopo’s on Beverly. Sometimes we would hang out with the hookers at Greenblatt’s Deli on Sunset Blvd. And on Fridays, we would all put on our bi-colored Dolfin shorts, satin jackets with matching caps, and head down to Flipper’s, the famous roller-skating rink featured in early episodes of Charlie’s Angels. My mom’s most significant relationship at the time was with a spritely English chap named Steve. I was a pretty quiet kid as it was but he used to fancy telling me, “Children should be seen and not heard,” as I sat in my fake bear coat in the back of my mom’s yellow Volkswagen bug. Steve adored my mom, who was about 30 years younger than him, and wanted her to send me to a boarding school in England. But actually, I liked him. He would roll up to our place in fancy cars—a cream-colored convertible Duesenberg one week, black Bentley the next—and to me, he looked like a funny elf. He was the tour manager for a lot of rock bands in the late 1970s-early ‘80s. And my mom was the bookkeeper for Van Halen then, too. So between the two of them, I’d gotten my eardrums blasted backstage at many a show–my first being Black Sabbath with Van Halen. Of course, I was screaming the whole time and David Lee Roth scared me half to death, but it’s a cool fact to impress boys sometimes. Before I was 10, I rode in a lot of limos, saw my fair share of cocaine, marijuana, booze and mink-wearing groupies before I really knew what was going on. I also got to go on Hawaiian tours with Van Halen during the summer, and a European tour with The Knack one spring. You remember them, don’t you? “M-m-m-my Sharona?” Yeah, well, they were huge then. And I was absolutely in love with the lead singer, who schooled me on the genius of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. That is, when he wasn’t tending to his harem of hot 18-year-old bisexual groupies that my mom often shopped with when we were in Spain and Germany. Anyway, Steve and my mom broke up. I think the last we heard of him he was in a jail in Peru for smuggling cocaine. And the next year, my mom and I moved to Las Vegas. Samantha Campos once sat in the green room of the Merv Griffin show and knows how to say “butter” in four languages. MTW
