LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR REMEMBERS RICK Thank you for your article on Rick [Perrie] (“Remembering Rick,” June 2, 2005). I will remember him for his quick wit and sense of humor. One day at work, I picked up a People magazine in the waiting room and sighed, “I wish I looked like Jennifer Lopez.” He didn’t miss a beat: “So do I, Donelle—so do I.” -Donelle Williams, MD, via email

FAIR POINTS Thank you for the article you wrote about me “Too Cutting Edge” in the May 26, 2005 Maui Time Weekly. While it is generally a nice article, I hope that readers were able to get past the headline and the unflattering caption under the photo (“He sticks people with more than just a bill”). While semi-funny it really doesn’t reflect the kind of person I am. I’m not at all about money, often give my patients discounts and my kama’aina rates are among the cheapest on the island. Also, it would have been nice to include some contact information or my business name so that people could get in touch with me. All of that aside, thanks for providing Maui with a (most times) fun and intelligent newspaper. -Bryon Sparks, Sparks Acupuncture, Makawao The Editor responds: You didn’t like that caption? I thought it was way more than “semi-funny.” “He sticks people”—get it? Sticks? Needles? Acupuncture? Oh man, I spent hours working on that joke. Hours. Okay, an hour. Maybe. Couple minutes, for sure. Man, tough crowd.

CONFIDENTIAL TO THE GUY WHO COMPLAINED THAT WE NEED TO STOP ATTACKING PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:

reelected seven months ago. And yes, this country is in the middle of two wars. Isn’t it funny how your arguments against our writing bad things about Dubya also happen to be our defense? You see, we think Bush’s policies are bad for the country. We oppose giving a free pass to big corporations that dump toxics into the environment. We oppose emasculating the regulatory arm of the Securities and Exchange Commission. We oppose invading sovereign nations that weren’t a threat to us. And we oppose torturing prisoners of war, in some cases, to death. As long as Bush supports those things, we’ll be right there “attacking” him as you so eloquently put it.

CORRECTION To all of you who went and cleaned up the beach on June 16 as per our instructions in the previous issue (“A Clean Beach? You Don’t Say,” June 9, 2005), great job. Unfortunately, we should have made clear that the big beach clean-up effort will actually take place on June 23. You can check page 29 in this issue for more info. Oh, and in that same story we also spelled event organizer Matt Lane’s name wrong. Way wrong. So wrong that—oh, never mind. Just go clean up the damn beach.

Maui Time welcomes letters commenting on our coverage, but only if they’re complimentary. If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar—that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. Send your letters to the editor via e-mail (letters@mauitime.com), regular mail (Letters to the Editor, Maui Time Weekly, 658 Front Street, Ste. 126A-7278, Lahaina, HI 96761) or fax (808-661-0446). NEWSOFTHEWEIRD GRIDIRON CATHEDRALS

*Same day booking only subject to availability. Kama’aina friends and family! Only one ID requred.

In an era of tight education budgets, one category of Texas school spending seems unrestrained, according to a May Houston Chronicle story: high school football stadiums. More than 20 new or planned facilities (“gridiron cathedrals”) resemble those of professional teams, with luxury suites, plush locker rooms and weight rooms, or even climate-controlled indoor practice facilities. The $20 million stadium in Denton, Texas, which includes a $900,000, three-story scoreboard with instant replay, is barely better than the state-of-the-art fields in Waco, Southlake and Mesquite, but may not hold up to the $27 million facility in Round Rock. Critics bemoan the terribly misplaced priorities, but defenders say the stadiums may eventually pay for themselves and that construction bonds are more accessible than the tax money necessary to raise teacher salaries.

OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY Russian “astrologist” Marina Bai has filed a lawsuit in the Presnensky district court in Moscow against NASA, claiming that her business will be ruined if the U.S. agency is allowed, as planned, to crash a rocket into the Tempel 1 comet on July 4 to see what can be learned from the experience. Bai said the collision will “interfere with the natural life of the universe,” which will in turn harm her “system of spiritual values,” and she seeks 8.7 billion rubles (about US$311 million, which is the reported cost of the entire mission).

GREAT ART! In May, backhoe contractor and parttime sculptor Ricky Pearce created a 17foot-high, 40-ton concrete figure of the legs of a reclining woman in a grassy lot between two churches in a quiet neighbor-

hood in Henderson, N.C. The legs, bent at the knees, noticeably parted, and accompanied by landscaped foliage “strategically placed” (according to a report from WNCN-TV in Raleigh), are supposedly in tribute to Marilyn Monroe. Asked one neighbor, “Why do they just show the legs?”

PEACE PLAN The project “Sleeping With the Enemy,” at the Jack the Pelican Presents gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y., involves two gay Israeli artists (Gil and Moti) who have recently dated dozens of local Arab men. They announced in May that they are ready to select one of them to seduce. The idea is that their tryst will take place at the gallery as a statement on defusing Arab-Israeli hostilities.

FURRIE FOLLIES Computer repairman Dennis Avner of Guatay, Calif., is perhaps the world’s most extreme variation of a “furrie” (a person who adopts the persona of an animal). Avner has tiger-stripe tattoos covering most of his body, dental implants sharpened to points to resemble tiger teeth, and metal-stud implants around his mouth to hold his long, plastic whiskers. He has had ear and lip surgery to make his head more cat-like and wears special contact lenses to make his eyes appear as ovals. He told the San Diego Union Tribune in May that Guatay folks are mostly tolerant of him but that he nonetheless has decided to relocate to the state of Washington.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A man in March who decided to wear a Pluto dog mask to rob a Gordon’s Mini Market in Cranberry, Pa. was unsuccessful, forced to flee empty-handed when the clerk could not bring himself to stop laughing at the disguise. MTW

Citizen Stan The life and times of Stanley Sheinbaum I first heard about Stanley Sheinbaum in 1991, while Los Angeles was tearing its hair out over four LAPD cops who beat Rodney King. As President of the Los Angeles Police Commission, Sheinbaum was in the news nearly every day—looking more like a Hebrew scholar than an urban politico—calling for the intensely controversial LAPD Chief Daryl Gates to get the hell out of office. Sheinbaum eventually got his wish, but only after LA exploded in riots in the spring of 1992. Billed by the California Film Institute as “the most powerful man you’ve never

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in the Summer Issue of Connections, the official newsletter of the Maui Chamber of Commerce: “The Legislature supported other initiatives that are priorities for my administration, including… giving law enforcement officials more tools to prevent and prosecute crime.”

What she didn’t say: Such “tools” look a lot like police state practices. Lingle’s called for “strengthening Hawai’i’s electronic surveillance laws” and “toughening mandatory sentencing laws.” But the scariest was her asking the legislature to pass “a constitutional amendment legalizing the ‘walk and talk’ and ‘knock and talk’ programs.” She’d need an amendment because back in 1992 the state Supreme Court ruled such programs—where police officers can ask to search and frisk people at airport terminals with no probably cause—were blatantly unconstitutional because “a reasonable person would not believe it possible to ignore the officer’s questions and walk away.” -Anthony Pignataro

heard of,” Sheinbaum is an authentic Renaissance Man. Now in his mid-80s, Sheinbaum has at times played diplomat, economist, fundraiser, peacemaker, activist, civil libertarian, educator, spy and dupe. He’s the subject of the new documentary Citizen Stan which is running in this year’s Maui Film Festival. The film is partially produced by his good friend Robert Scheer, a columnist for The Los Angeles Times and The Nation. In 2004, the Jewish Journal’s Marc Ballon called Sheinbaum the “quintessential limousine liberal.” His wealthy wife Betty is the daughter of the late Hollywood mogul Jack

silk for American combat pilots—the maps could be folded and unfolded silently, should the fliers have to bail out over enemy territory. After studying economics, Sheinbaum taught at Michigan State in the 1950s. In 1957, he was coordinating the school’s $25 million Vietnam Project, which was ostensibly an economic development program. In fact, it was a front for CIA officers who were arresting, interrogating and torturing alleged Viet Cong agents. The revelation shocked Sheinbaum, who resigned from the program in 1959. Contacted by Scheer in 1966 about the program for the magazine Ramparts, Sheinbaum spoke out against the CIA’s using academics like him as a cover for brutal counter-insurgency operations. Sheinbaum was now an outspoken anti-war figure—so much so that the CIA began illegal and blatantly political espionage of him, Scheer and Ramparts. His adventures continued overseas. In 1967, Sheinbaum smuggled documents out of Greece after a military coup, saving the life of

Sheinbaum and Yasser Warner. Sheinbaum himself made a killing in the early 1970s, when President Richard Nixon took the nation off the gold standard. Today the Sheinbaums live in a large Brentwood home that he and his wife use as a salon for left-liberal causes and fundraisers. The walls of his office are covered with photos of him posing with Barbra Streisand, Fidel Castro and Jordan’s late King Hussein. He was a Fulbright scholar to Paris. He’s the current Chairman Emeritus of the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California. As a University of California Regent in the 1980s, he sought to end the university system’s ties to South Africa. Sheinbaum may be thoroughly liberal, but he’s no radical. His loyalties lie firmly with the establishment. He made this perfectly clear in 2000, when he backed Al Gore and not Ralph Nader for president. “[W]e cannot take the chance that [George W.] Bush might win,” he said in the Nov. 3, 2000 LA Weekly. “Nader has about the best grasp of what’s awry in this country, but he does not have the power to implement any of the policy suggestions he has.” Sheinbaum got his start during World War II. Living in New York, he imprinted maps onto

the progressive Andres Papandreou, who later became Prime Minister. Six years later, Sheinbaum was acting as chief fundraiser for the legal defense of Daniel Ellsberg, the RAND Company analyst who leaked thousands of pages of secret studies of the Vietnam War to The New York Times. Sheinbaum tried to convert his activism into a political career, but had no success. In 1966 and 1968, he campaigned unsuccessfully for the U.S. congressional seat representing Santa Barbara. Ironically, he had more luck in the international arena. In late 1980s, Sheinbaum led a delegation of prominent American Jews to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Working with Reagan Administration National Security Adviser Colin Powell, Sheinbaum and his team helped convinced Arafat to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel’s right to exist. When Bill

Clinton became president, he made Sheinbaum a special envoy to Syria. His job was to set up a meeting between Clinton and President Hafiz al-Assad. Such Middle Eastern diplomacy and ties to Arafat have brought controversy to Sheinbaum—someone once dumped a skinned pig in his driveway—but he remains largely unknown. Except for his time as an LA police commissioner, Sheinbaum has never attracted much mainstream attention. Clearly, this film is long overdue. LC Watch The Commissioners Understand

When I first started covering the Maui County Department of Liquor Control, I had to make a few assumptions. First and foremost, that the department was pretty much like other government agencies I’d dealt with. This implied that A) Technically proficient bureaucrats did most of the work while B) Politically appointed commissioners sat back and basically let the first group run things without comment. I got a lesson in how right I was at the May 11, 2005 Liquor Commission hearing. After dispensing with all the hearings and approvals and everyone had left the meeting room except for staff and yours truly, the commissioners began asking questions about their jobs and duties that should have been answered years earlier. For instance, Commissioner Marian Kunihisa, who’s sat on the panel since 2002, said she felt “uncomfortable” asking one permit applicant questions about his past businesses and alleged troubles with the law that were included in the files handed to each commissioner before each hearing. My notes on the brief exchange that came next between Kunihisa and First Deputy Corporation Counsel Traci Fujita Villarosa are bracketed with question marks. I scrawled them there as I wondered why someone who’s sat on the commission for more than two years needed to be reminded that she could ask any applicant any question she wanted. Villarosa sits in on Liquor Commission—and Adjudication Board—hearings to provide legal advice and information. Telling a commissioner what questions he or she can ask is so elementary it’s terrifying—you go over stuff like that during the briefing right after commissioners first take their seats. In theory, the LC staff works at the behest of the commissioners. It’s a great theory, but it’s too bad it doesn’t work out in reality. MTW

Governor Linda Lingle is barely out of Hawai’i a day—off to Asia for a little gladhanding and deal cutting—and Lt. Gov. James Aiona is already waving around that bill-signing pen. Today he made it legal for cops to snag DNA samples off all felons—not merely murderers and sex offenders. Now I’m a huge fan of using new DNA evidence to get wrongfully convicted guys sprung from prison, but look carefully at this statement from Aiona’s press release on the new law: “With new technology, DNA collection can now be

FRIDAY, JUN. 10 Former State Senator Vincent F. Yano died May 11 at the age of 83, but The Maui News ran his obit today. Yano sat in state Senate from 1963 to 1970, but then lost to future governor George Ariyoshi in a bid to be the Democratic Party’s 1970 Lt. Gov. candidate. The brief obit has plenty of information on Yano’s working for Legal Aid Society, helping the mentally ill and helping legalize abortion in Hawai’i, but precious little on the fact that he was one of many, many people who sought riches dealing real estate while holding the public trust. In the 1960s, Yano was a member of an intimate hui—with Ariyoshi, of all people—that bought and sold 60 acres in Kula. Yano wasn’t nearly as a big a player as some at the time—Ariyoshi, for instance—but he was a player.

SUNDAY, JUN. 12 Of all the neighbor islands, Maui actually has the most restrictive laws governing home construction on agricultural land, according to today’s Advertiser. No, really. See, on islands like Kauai and the Big Island, no one who wants to build a giant million-dollar estate on ag land has to carry out a “farm plan”—saying they will grow trees or keep a horse or something—until

The State of Hawai’i is now officially doing business with the People’s Republic of China. Yesterday, our own Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom sang in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People—which the Honolulu Star-Bulletin called the “home of China’s rubber-stamp Parliament”—as part of festivities to celebrate the opening of our state’s trade and tourism office. That makes Hawai’i only the second U.S. state—behind Nevada, wouldn’t you know—to open such offices in China. Ironically, the Star-Bulletin reported, the office opening took place on the same day that Chinese officials canceled a meeting with Governor Lingle without saying why. As you all know, Lingle is currently touring Asia with members of the super-group Cream. No word on her reaction. Anthony Pignataro is currently filming a gripping, edgy documentary on the life and times of Paul Linke, the actor who portrayed fun-loving Officer Arthur Lee “Grossie” Grossman on the television series CHiPS.

they’ve built at least two “farm dwellings.” But on Maui—aka, Land of Big Brother—owners have to put their farm plan in action if they put up a second building. This is interesting, because the paper reports that Maui has the most ag subdivisions going up in the neighbor islands. In fact, developers at Launiupoko, Ukemehame and Pu’unoa are willing to brave not only our island’s ghastly restrictions but also lawsuits from private citizens alleging that such construction totally violates agricultural zoning to keep driving nails. But keep in mind that Maui isn’t going crazy—ag land builders here, like elsewhere, are still exempt from those pesky developer fees that the county uses to build roads, schools and other examples of government gone haywire.

running on the very same page. This happened today, concerning Maui Police Chief Tom Phillips’ recent decision to stop his officers from filling out reports on minor traffic accidents. “We want them [the officers] to spend the quality time on the criminal issues,” Phillips told The Maui News, which accepted his statement uncritically and even opined that the chief “should be commended for seriously looking at his options in how to best utilize his limited manpower…” But barely six inches to the right is a letter from David Lee of Kihei that reduces the editorial to the level of mere public relations. Lee, who also thought Phillips was right to keep Maui PD officers out of fender benders, wrote that there were plenty more ways for the department to marshal their limited resources. “Why are there often upwards of three and four police cars at every traffic stop and minor call?” Lee asked. He added that cops should also stop wasting their time “investigating miscellaneous accidents at homes and businesses” and “Stop worrying so much about seat belts.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.

In an unusual though not completely unexpected development, time and space bent back on itself, allowing me to see the June 9 Honolulu Advertiser while it’s still today, June 8. Not much news to report, other than the fact that Annette and Ernest Callo are suing the state. They’re the parents of Denise Callo, who died April 13 when she actually drove off a section of the old Pali road that provided a vista next to the new Pali road. Callo died along with a 16-year-old male passenger when she screwed up a u-turn trying to get back to the highway and rolled off the cliff. A 16-year-old female passenger and her infant daughter somehow survived the 150-foot plunge into the rocks below. Callo’s parents say everything would have been cool had there been a barrier along the edge of the old road segment. I completely agree, though to be fair everything also might have been cool had Callo not been legally drunk and stoned on grass when she tried to make that turn.

Maui Film Festival at Wailea I like movies. Do you like movies? You seem to like movies. Did I mention that I like movies? To save time, I’m going to assume that since you’re reading this right now you like movies, too. And why not? Movies are fun! They take us places we don’t normally visit like deep space, 19th century warships and the inside of John Malkovich’s noggin. There are plenty of movies to see this week, this being the time of the Maui Film Festival and all. And since you’re reading this, the seminal guide to all things Film Festival, I’m assuming you want to go. The Festival runs through June 19, with screenings split as usual between Wailea and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului. And as usual, there is a barge-load of movies at the festival—something like 60, if I remember my 3rd grade

math correctly. Lots of short films, tons of documentaries, a few music pieces, a slew of Charlie Chaplin classics and some Hilary Duff picture that I’m sure was thrown in there for marketing purposes. But a solid line-up, to be sure. On Saturday, June 18, there will be panel discussions at the Wailea Marriott on the difficulties facing filmmakers who want to show the plights of indigenous peoples, the greatness of short films and the explosion of documentary films. And throughout the week there will be tributes to various celebrities. This year the Festival is honoring Jake Gyllenhaal, William H. Macy, all three Wilson brothers (Whoa—three? There’s Luke and Owen, sure, but three? What, there’s an Andrew? Really? Get out!), Dave Kalama, Laird Hamilton and Mike Myers. There’s also supposed to be some special surprise guest. I was certain it was going to be the A-Team’s George Peppard, but then someone told me that he died 11 years ago. Who knew? Anyway it’s time again for the Maui Film Festival, and we’re your place for info. We’ve got the run-down on every film, a few short features on some of the more noteworthy pictures, a complete schedule of all events and a look at the various venues. So read up, then go. Or else.

COMMUNE

THE ADVENTURES OF BOB AND SAM This animated short concerns a sperm on a mission to find his—his? Yeah, I guess so— perfect mate, which then becomes a subject for discussion between a couple film critics. Sounds like a lot of ground to cover in just a couple minutes, but it’s a cartoon! Not Rated/2 min.

ALL ABOARD THE CRAZY TRAIN From the team known for its big-wave documentary filmmaking at Peahi (Step Into Liquid, Riding Giants) comes this mind-boggling exploration of the lives of tow-in pioneers Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and others rip it up at Jaws during the 2004-2005 winter when the place just went off. Not Rated/35 min.

AURORA BOREALIS Donald Sutherland, Louise Fletcher, Joshua Jackson and Juliette Lewis star in this warm, humorous and bittersweet story of love that spans generations. Yup, sounds like a chick flick. Not Rated/109 min.

AWAKE ZION This documentary explores the considerable similarities between Jamaican Rastafarians and Jews—the iconic use of the Star of David, many references to Zion and even dreadlocks. Oy vey, mon! Not Rated/60 min.

B

BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY Shot on location in Nepal, this documentary takes us to the Himalayas, where two guys—one Sherpa and one Western—get together to paraglide over the mountains. Sounds a bit chilly to me, but thrilling nonetheless. Not Rated/15 min.

THE BIG EMPTY This “bittersweet tale of Alice, her vagina and the infinite nature of the tundra” won an Audience Award at Malibu and a Grand Jury Prize at the USA Film Festival. Just to warn you guys out there getting excited—the movie’s about as graphic as a Hallmark Hall of Fame picture—but it will pique your interest. Not Rated/21 min.

This documentary explores the Black Bear Commune, which dates to 1968 and is still chock-full of hippies today. Variety’s Robert Koehler says the movie provides the “most honest appraisal yet on film” of the whole 1960s Age of Aquarius counter-culture thing. Groovy, man. Not Rated/78 min.

D

DESERTED Short film by directed by David Karlsberg. Go and be surprised. Not Rated/25 min.

THE DO OVER A wedding caterer meets a mysterious stranger, then for some reason agrees to let him “do over” the last moments the caterer spent with a friend. I think this is one of those pictures you’re supposed to talk about with your pals after the closing credits start rolling. Not Rated/9 min.

DOWN DOG Dave the guru goes to yoga classes for the reason most of us think of when we see guys in yoga classes—to bag chicks. He even spouts “spiritual truths” as a phony boddhisatva to do so. Then one day he decides to levitate and a truly enlightened being shows up. Spiritual hilarity ensues. Winner, Best Short Film, Boulder International Film Festival. Not Rated/22 min.

DUANE HOPWOOD David Schwimmer—star of Friends, Band of Brothers and that one sit-com where Henry Winkler played his dad that lasted like two episodes—plays a divorced dad who’s having problems keeping his two young daughters in line. Also starring Janeane Garofalo, Judah Friedlander, Susan Lynch, Dick Cavett—yes, THE Dick Cavett—and Steven Schirippa. Not Rated/89 min.

E

EASY STREET Charlie Chaplin plays a tramp—of course— and wanders into a mission to snag the collection box. But he’s smitten by Edna and returns the box. Reformed, he becomes a cop—of course. His first assignment: rough-and-tumble Easy Street, where he must deal with the formidable Eric the Tough, who I always thought was that Viking guy from like a thousand years ago. My mistake. Not Rated/19 min.

F

FAVELA RISING A gritty, yet exhilarating examination of the grass-roots organization AfroReggae, which is trying to use music and dance to stop the vicious, murderous drug abuse in the slums of Rio de Janiero. I’ve seen City of God—these guys need all the luck they can get. Not Rated/80 min.

C

G

GARPENFARGLE Very short movie about a dog that’s left home with the sole instruction that he not involve himself with the trash. Anyone who’s owned a dog knows what happens next. Not Rated/4 min.

GRIZZLY MAN This is the story of Timothy Treadwell, some guy who lacked so-called “normal” hobbies and instead spent nearly 15 years videotaping the summers he spent in Alaska hanging with the grizzly bears of Alaska. It must be good, because director Werner Herzog won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at Sundance this year for this thing. Not Rated/103 min.

FELLINI’S DONUT A guy—not Homer Simpson—tries to find the perfect donut. The journey becomes an existential quandary in this Fellini spoof that asks questions like “What deep, dark secret must be hidden beneath a thick facade of frosting and sprinkles?” and “Can perfection be found in a pastry that was incomplete to begin with?” Not Rated/8 min.

CHAMPIONS ON WHEELS This film features a lot of Maui wheelchair athletes. It takes a long, hard look at what the chair really means to those who must live in it, but it also shows how they live fulfilling lives and train as part of Team USA at the Athens Paralympics. Not Rated/75 min.

CITIZEN STAN Los Angeles Times and The Nation columnist Robert Scheer co-produced this documentary on his friend Stanley Sheinbaum, a modern Renaissance Man who’s part Democratic Party fundraiser, limousine liberal, diplomat, economist, urban activist and spy. Not Rated/62 min.

CHAMPIONS ON WHEELS

After causing trouble on the sales floor, Charlie Chaplin goes to the office floor, where he wrecks havoc with the manager and a robber. The whole thing is a comedy of mistaken identities—much like Three’s Company—except it involves an escalator. Not Rated/29 min.

Maui Film Festival at Wailea

June ecials! HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE Sp If my husband asks, “Honey, do we have to watch cartoons at the film festival?” this year I am going to kick him in the nuts. Clearly, he still doesn’t understand that the imagery, audio effects and animation quality of animated films these days far surpasses movies for men who like movies. All human boundaries are dropped in animation. What is impossible in the realm of man’s capability suddenly because possible, even plausible. There is real invention and imagination bursting from animated films’ incredible screenplays and plots. You don’t see Disney reproducing the old classics year after year—instead they’re creating more colorful and amazing stories to dazzle child and adult alike at the box office. Which brings me to Howl’s Moving Castle. The Japanese cutting edge animation house, Ghibli Studios, has caught the fancy of Disney with this, their latest flick. Ghibli is headed by Japan’s anime genius, Hayao Miyazaki, who’s no slouch. He did the screenplay and animation for both Princess Mononoke, which won the Japan Academy Award for best film, and Spirited Away, which surpassed Mononoke at the box office and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Film in the U.S. While Pixar Studios has advanced the scope and popularity of digital animation in the United States, the Japanese have long been masters of anime films. Theirs is a stylized approach to animation, fine-tuned so it’s both high-tech and old school. Classic anime films like Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell show off both these qualities, but you may be more familiar with characters and stories like the fantasy shows Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon, both of which are shown on The Cartoon Network. Some anime takes the direction of Japanese history, like Ninja, while others take on a futuristic sci fi storyline like Ghost. A bit more underground anime borders on porn, taking cues from the risqué yet ever-popular Japanese comic book styles of Manga. Howl’s Moving Castle came out in Japan in 2004. It’s already won accolades like the Animation of the Year at the Tokyo Anime awards last month, as well as Best Director (Hayao Miyazaki) and Best Music (Joe Hisaishi) awards. In other words, anime is way, way

better than a kick in the balls. To the masterful Japanese animation, Disney’s added familiar and famous voices from Billy Crystal, Christian Bale, Blythe Danner, Emily Mortimer and Lauren Bacall. Miyazaki may not have written this story, but it’s based on a book by fantasy writer Dianna Wynne. Howl runs with recognizable themes of war, familial piety, nature, coming of age and devouring of hearts. You can count on thick moral overtones, a tough-cookie heroine, dreamy aeronautic scenes and conflicts pitting mechanized industry against nature. Oh, and plenty of enchanting animation primarily drawn the old fashioned way, by hand. Howl’s Moving Castle Thursday, 5 p.m. at the Castle Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center. 119 min. -By Jen Russo

Award-winning documentarian Edgy Lee tells the story of Hawai’i’s first people. Along the way, he puts Hokule’a master navigator Nainoa Thompson and singer/songwriter Keali’i Reichel on the screen to give us insight into their plight and culture. Not Rated/60 min.

HULA GIRLS With a title like that, how could it go wrong? Oh wait, this is a serious documentary. Oh well—it shows how artists, writers, explorers and really men of all ages have spent the last 200 years lusting after the women of Polynesia. Using journals, early movie clips and interviews, Hula Girls shows us how the myth of the island woman has been both idealized and exploited. Not Rated/52 min.

HUSTLE AND FLOW Terrence Howard plays a small-time hustler who dreams of making it in the music business. Obviously he’s just dreaming—it takes a lot more than a “small-time” hustler to get anywhere in the music business. Anyway, it won the Dramatic and Cinematography Audience Awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and it stars Ludacris, Isaac Hayes and Anthony Anderson. Rated R/114 min.

HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE This is an anime film by Hayao Miyazaki, director of the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away. It’s already won three international Best Film awards. It involves a young woman who heads off to the land of wizards and witches—no, not our nation’s capital—in hopes of reversing some curse cast on her by the Witch of the Waste. Hey, I think I went out with her once. Anyway, it includes the voices of Lauren Bacall, Billy Crystal, Christian Bale and Jean Simmons. Rated PG/119 min.

Maui Film Festival at Wailea

VENUE INFO CELESTIAL CINEMA The Festival people consider this their “crown jewel.” Located on the training facility of the Gold and Emerald Golf Course, this “theater” features a massive 48’ by 22’ screen, which allows hundreds of people to watch movies the way nature intended them—outside, under a warm Hawaiian night sky. Parking is located at the Wailea special event parking area on Wailea Ike Dr. A free shuttle will get you to the cinema.

DIGITAL SKYDOME

SANDDANCE THEATER

Both are located in the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC). The Castle is the “movie palace,” with a 48’ by 22’ screen and more than 1,000 seats, some which are in a really cool balcony section. The McCoy is a smaller, 250-seat cinema. The MACC is located at 1 Cameron Way, off Papa Ave. between Kahului Beach Rd. and Ka’ahumanu Ave. in Kahului. Parking is at the MACC, which is a 35-minute drive from Wailea, but keep in mind there are no shuttles making that run.

This is the theater on Wailea Beach just below the Four Seasons Resort. Being located on a public beach and all, the films shown here are all free. You just sit in the sand and watch films—this year, a collection of some of Charlie Chaplin’s best shorts. Parking is either at the Wailea special event area—you’ll have to catch the shuttle—or at the usual Wailea Beach public parking lot.

This one’s on the Pacific Terrace of the Wailea Marriott. Also under the stars, this is where the Festival will be screening films that aren’t really films, but are in fact entirely digital movies. Parking is at either the Marriott or the Shops at Wailea.

ONO KINEGRINDS

BY KELLY CHAMBERS

Kitada’s Kau Kau Korner Even some locals don’t know about this place I remember my high school classmates bragging about ditching school to get loaded and go eat at Kitada’s. But they never took me along. I was never that cool, I guess.

Kitada’s

3617 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao, 572-7241. Open Mon-Sat, 6 a.m.-1:30 p.m. $

It wasn’t until I was 23 that I ate Kitada’s food. My boyfriend brought me some take-out—saimin and cheeseburgers at 6 a.m. for my hangover. It was the best cure for a hangover I’ve tried. I’ve passed the place a million times. You can’t exactly see through the windows and it looks like a little rundown hut about to fall off the cliff into the gulch at the beginning of Makawao Town. You might even think it’s an abandoned building, were it not for the Kitada’s sign outside. Maybe they keep it this way to ward off tourists and outsiders. It certainly kept me away. Or maybe it’s the fact that they open early in the morning and close in the early afternoon—that ain’t much time in the day. Not too many restaurants close when most of the working world is ready to eat. Anyway, the other morning I took my first trip to Kitada’s. Inside it looks like it hasn’t been redecorated since 1965, which isn’t a bad thing. Two rather irregular regulars accompanied me. One told me that if Kitada’s ever closes, there will be a lot of Portagees with nothing to do in the morning. I looked around. There were a lot of Portagees and Filipinos talking up a storm about uncles/brothers/coworkers/the old lady’s first-born’s graduation party they attended/the gout someone had last week.

JUNE 16, 2005

DINING

There was no sign of service, so my boyfriend walked to the kitchen and casually leaned in. “Ethel, I’m gonna get two coffees,” he said. Waiting, I looked at some of the faded pictures on the wall. Some are from old Makawao society, showing cattle ranchers and Catholics. There are a few autographed photos of Frank De Lima, Marty Dread, several high school mug shots of family friends and—wait a minute—is that a naked lady? Once my boyfriend returned with the coffees I asked he and his friend if tourists ever come in here. Sure, they said: they’re the ones who look over the menu. I looked down at my menu, then said it’s all strictly research. They’ve got your typical plate lunch choices: beef stew, hamburger plate, curry chicken, pork chops. All come with mac salad, salted cabbage and rice. There are some sandwiches, cheeseburgers, burger deluxes and their specialty—saimin and dry mein with broth. Ethel finally came out. She’s a small woman with honest eyes. “This is a really good boyfriend, if this is your boyfriend,” she told me. “What you guys want?” My friends quickly told her, but I—always indecisive—hesitated. “Haoles like the hekka,” Ethel suggested. Being haole, I agreed. I asked my friends what made Kitada’s plate lunches so special. “It’s the atmosphere.” “No, it’s the seasonings.” “The people.” “The recipe. No, it’s the meat.” “The scene.” “It’s the mom and pop-style food.” “It’s a place for the local people to come together.” I began to fantasize about a lessfilling/tastes great brawl starting, but then the food came. We grabbed canned juices from the self-serve cooler and donned our food with all the proper condiments (shoyu, pepper, etc).

Man, that’s a huge plate lunch The hekka was a colorful mix of beef, juices and onions. There was something about the meat—an indescribable goodness. Some say you can judge a plate lunch place by its mac salad, so I dove into my perfectly round scoop. It could have used a little pepper, but before I knew it, it was gone. My plate was bare, everyone else’s plates were bare and we were at the cash register.

This is Kitada’s. You don’t linger over the meal, you grind it. You don’t chit chat, you talk story. You’re not related to any of these people, but you might as well be. They care about the food they cook you. They have for years and will continue. Because if they don’t, there will be a lot of Portagee people with nothing to do in the morning. MTW

AS TOLD TO GABRIELLE POCCIA

Stephen Mattai Assistant manager, Subway in Wailuku My favorite Subway sandwich is the veggie patty. I tend to cook at home though, and I rarely ever eat bread. I fell in love with Maui in 1997 when I moved here for nine months. I am really glad to be back on the island. My second stay started in August of 2004 and Subway has been my place of employment since then. My job previous to this was as a chef with a traveling catering company. We would travel on tour for several months with various musical artists and then head back home for a while and wait for the next job. When they went on break we went on break. San Francisco used to be the place that I would return to but Maui is my base camp now. Coming back here I decided to take a little extra time off from the touring and from cooking. One day I wandered down to Subway, saw the “help wanted” sign, and decided to apply. I needed money for beer and gas and it was the sort of low-stress job that I was looking for. I really like the young couple that owns the store. We get along well and they would like me to stay until I go back on tour. Working in Wailuku I serve mainly local people and it’s nice to be able to talk to people from many other places around the island. We also get many of the state and county workers from the government buildings on their lunch breaks. They don’t get a lot of niceness and it feels good to be able to inject some positivity into their day. People are used to the in, out and “have a good day” of the fast food business but it is really nice to take the time to talk. It makes their sandwich and their day a lot better. Someday I’d like to open my own restaurant, perhaps in Central America. I was trained in French and Italian cooking and learned a lot during my first stay on Maui under the direction of Jacques, a chef at the old Wunderbar in Paia. As for right now I’m really enjoying taking it easy. MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Iao Spotlight Thursday (Tonight!), 6:30 p.m. at the Iao Theater in Wailuku [COMMUNITY MEETING] It sounds terribly melodramatic, but the future of the historic old Iao Theater is a giant question mark right now. As part of a general effort to “revitalize” Wailuku Town, a private consulting firm—under contract from the Iao Theater Restoration Initiatives Task Force, which always meets in secret—is taking suggestions and spurring discussions from residents on what to do with the old theater. Does the county sell it? Or kick current theater manager Maui OnStage out when the lease ends this October? Should the Iao show just plays or go back to its old movie house status? And when, oh when, are they going to do something about air conditioning? So go, listen and say what you think. Really—don’t be shy. For more information, call 270-7710. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

THURSDAY

180 Skate Fest Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Kahului YMCA [MUSIC/SPORTS] Okay, it’s true—I drooled the whole way through Lords of Dogtown. The fact that those boys were only like 16 made me feel a tad lecherous, but let’s admit it: one of life’s great mysteries is the appeal of people maneuvering on little pieces of wood. I can’t explain it, but I plan on doing some more research at the 180fest skate competition (8:30 a.m.). Along with the competitors, there’ll be demos (2 p.m.) by pro skaters from all over the country, and music from some great bands (3 p.m.). Battle Royale from Oahu plays this kind of emo ska, referred to as “skeemo.” Maui bands Leora, Light of a Thousand Lanterns and Fire Never Fading will also be there. And if you need another reason to go, there will be all sorts of giveaways from DaKine, Foundation, Toy Machine and 180. That’s right! They want to give us stuff to listen to music and watch skaters skate. And it’s free. Amazing! I’m so in. For more info, call 808837-8838. [REESE QUICK]

Honoring Festival of Mana The Real Beach Saturday, 10 p.m. at Malu Ka O’hu King K Clean Up in Kula Sat., 9 a.m. in Lahaina

[PARADE] Did you know that out of 13 billion dollars allocated for culture and recreation by the State Dept of Accounting not one dollar could be spared for any outer island Kamehameha celebration? Thanks a lot, Lingle! That is no way to honor the great King that united these islands. At least Aunty Doll Aricayos, Aunty Crystal Alboro with the assistance of the Lahainatown Action Committee have, since 2000, organized Maui’s own grass roots celebration. This year’s floral parade and ho’olaulea is themed Kupaianaha Ka Hana a Kakou I ke Alu Like (Together We Achieve the Ordinary), and will feature over 70 horses and gorgeous pa’u riders representing all the islands. Don’t miss this celebration that’s, well, fit for a king, under the banyan tree after the parade. [JEN RUSSO]

DAY

[PARTY] We all know Maui is an incredible place, full of energy. And on the best of days, we do feel a strong sense of aloha because of the kind and considerate gestures of strangers and neighbors. The Mana Fest—mana meaning “divine power” in Hawaiian—celebrates that feeling by exhibiting it through art, music and interaction. Braddish Johnson V and his ‘ohana have worked to preserve the beautiful land of Malu Ka O’hu—meaning “point of protection”—and further its development into a diverse horticultural phenomenon. Now that ‘ohana also includes Sha-BANG Productions, who will gather artists, musicians and guest speakers to fortify a festival filled with music, film, food and even, science. No drunk driving is allowed! So tents will be set up for those who choose to stay the night followed by a morning yoga session and breakfast for all overnight campers. Space is limited so only 300 guests will be able to attend. But we think that’s enough for a good soiree, don’t you? And all proceeds from the festival will go towards reforestation and the removal of invasive species. So come with open hearts, open minds, your gifts and talents, and aloha spirit—inspiration is inevitable. For more info or directions, call 250-1469. [GABRIELLE POCCIA]

Thursday, June 23, noon to 4 p.m. in Lahaina [ENVIRONMENT] First of all, his name is Matt Lane. And the beach clean up he’s organizing was not last Thursday, as we reported. It’s actually NEXT Thursday. We apologize for any inconveniences. But if you did show up, kudos to you and your efforts are appreciated. As for the rest of y’all, come on down to Kamehameha Beach Park (505 Front St.) to comb the shore from Mala Ramp to Puamana Park. Not like you need an incentive, but there will be food and beverages for volunteers during, a BBQ immediately afterward, and a big ole after party later at the Hard Rock Café (free admission for beach helpers, $6 for scrubs) with the John Moore Project, Sirrus B Posse and a 30-minute surf doc, as well as a raffle and door prizes. And mahalo to Hui O Wa’a Kaulua (the canoe club at 505), Surfrider Foundation, the Surf news network, Huliau (the organization of the seven surf schools of Lahaina), and everyone else taking part in this all-important and fun clean up. Call 210-445-2442 for more info.

BATMAN BEGINS - (PG13) - Action/Adventure, Crime/Gangster - It’s about time a movie explains the emergence of the Dark Knight into a do-gooder for Gotham City! After his parents are murdered, Bruce Wayne fights injustice in the world, returning to Gotham city as Batman. He uses his strength and intelligence to fight off bad guys. Christian Bale plays Batman in yet another installment but this time they got Batman right, including his infamous skintight leather suit. Val Kilmer was a sure-miss as Batman, and George Clooney was too Chanel-looking for the role of this tough, dark hero.

MAUI MALL MEGAPLEX Maui Mall, 249-2222 (Showtimes) = Matinee Cinderella Man - PG13 - Th (11, 12:20, 2:50, 3:30), 6:40, 7, 9:45, 10, Fr, M-W (1:20, 4:30), 7:40, Sa-Su (1:20), 4:30, 7:40 Honeymooners - PG13 - Th (12:30, 2:45, 5), 7:20, 9:30, Fr, M-W (1, 3:15, 5:30), 7:45, 10, Sa-Su (1, 3:15), 5:30, 7:45, 10 Longest Yard - PG13 - Th (11:10, 11:50, 1:45, 2:20, 4:30, 4:50), 7:05, 7:40, 9:40, 10:15, Fr, M-W (1:30, 1:50, 4:20, 4:40), 7, 7:20, 9:40, 9:55, Sa-Su (1:30,1:50), 4:20, 4:40, 7, 7:20, 9:40, 9:55

THE PERFECT MAN - (PG) - Romantic Comedy - Who is worse than Hilary Duff? Good question! This flick is about daughter Holly Hamilton (Duff) who is sick of her single mother’s bad luck with men. My advice? Stay out of it, Holly! Smart as she is, she decides to “help” her mother Jean (Heather Locklear), and creates a secret admirer who woos her with gifts and cards and helps boost her self-confidence. Too bad mommy falls for this imaginary “perfect man” and now Holly must find someone to take the invisible man’s place.

Madagascar - PG - Th (11:20, 12:10, 1:50, 2:40, 4:10, 5:10), 7:50, 9:50, Fr, M-W (1, 1:45, 3:10, 4:50, 5:20), 7:30, 9:50, Sa-Su (1, 1:45, 3:10), 4:50, 5:20, 7:30, 9:50 Monster In-Law - PG13 - Th 6:30, 9:10, Fr-W 7:10, 9:30 Mr. & Mrs. Smith - PG13 - Th (11, 11:30, 1:40, 2:10, 4:20, 4:50), 7:10, 7:30, 9:55, 10:15, Fr, M-W (1:10, 1:40, 4, 4:30), 6:40, 7:15, 9:20, 10, Sa-Su (1:10, 1:40), 4, 4:30, 6:40, 7:15, 9:20, 10

Now Showing ADVENTURES OF SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL IN 3D - (PG) - Action/Adventure, Kids/Family - Here comes another flashy kids flick from the same director responsible for the Spy Kids series. This is about 10-year-old Max who is an imaginative boy, forced to spend a summer alone with only his superhero friends, Shark Boy and Lava Girl. When his crazy summer is over he tells his family and friends all about these two characters but no one believes him. But then the heroes emerge out of space and take little Max along on a mission to save life on their weird planet. And hey, it’s in 3D! CINDERELLA MAN - (PG13) - Drama - Set in New York during the Great Depression era, this tells the true story of heavyweight champion James Braddock’s (Russell Crowe) rise to stardom. There aren’t any glass slippers or magic pumpkins in this film but there’s a lot of drama, as Braddock struggles to overcome poverty and provide for his wife (Renee Zellweger) through boxing. Directed by Ron Howard, it’s nice to see Crowe back in some Gladiator-type action in this over two-hour long flick. Scary fact: Ben Affleck was going to play the role of Braddock back in 2000, let’s all breathe a sign of relief that he didn’t! HIGH TENSION - (R) - Foreign, Suspense/Horror - The previews for this movie don’t reveal that it’s in French and has English subtitles. That’s probably because this movie can’t have much dialogue, just a bunch of screaming and crying. All Marie and Alex want to do is study for their exams at Alex’s family farmhouse. Unfortunately for the college chicks a serial killer charges into the house and abducts Alex. Marie is then left to save her friend, so she goes after the serial killer herself. Serial killer vs. innocent college student—never heard of that one before! THE HONEYMOONERS - (PG13) - Comedy Ralph Kramden and his wife Alice struggle with money despite Ralph’s attempts at get-rich-quick schemes and a motivational speaker tape series. They have some money saved up, so they decide they want to buy a Brooklyn duplex with their best friends, Ed and Trixie. But whoops, Ralph manages to lose their saved-up money when he mixes it up with another one of his money-making schemes. Why couldn’t he have left the money alone!? Now he’s lost their money and Alice as well. Ralph is going to fight hard to get his marriage and money back. Hmm... maybe sell more tapes? THE LONGEST YARD - (PG13) - Comedy - This remake of the 1974 Burt Reynolds classic stars Adam Sandler and, um, Reynolds again as current and former football star, respectively, who wind up in stir together. They end up putting a team together to play the guards and hilarity ensues. At least, it did back in ’74. Also stars Chris Rock. LORDS OF DOGTOWN - (PG13) - Drama - This movie is a based on a true story of dudes who rev-

I’m the new Batman... olutionized skateboarding in the 1970s. They managed to bring back skateboarding and made it more rebellious and badass. “Dogtown” refers to the formerly dangerous neighborhood between Venice and Santa Monica in California, where they skateboarded in empty Hollywood pools. Their crazy antics allowed skateboarding to gain respect and become an international sport. Some drama takes place when the success the guys get from skateboarding makes friendships hard to keep because everyone is worried about himself. MADAGASCAR - (PG) - Comedy, Kids/Family and Animation - Ah! Finally a movie with stars we can respect: a lion, a zebra, a giraffe and a pregnant hippo (voiced by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett-Smith, respectively). See, the animals were all “residents” of the zoo but when one of them disappears, the other three go looking for him and all four end up getting captured, put in boxes and shipped back to Africa. Only, something happens with the ship and the four wash up on the shores of Madagascar, having to fend for themselves after being “cared for” by humans all their lives. Yeah, I know, it sounds fishy to me, too, but that’s just half of it! Also stars (the voice of) Cedric the Entertainer. MR. & MRS SMITH - (PG13) - Action/Adventure, Romance, Thriller - Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star in this movie that brings domestic abuse to the big screen. Secret assassins they are and now their next targets are each other! Mr. and Mrs. Smith chase each other around with guns, shout out some cheesy lines and then fire off another round. If they loved each other they could just call it quits but this is one messed up case of “I do.” People will go to this movie to see the hotness of Angelina and Brad or maybe for some reassurance in their marriage? MONSTER IN-LAW - (PG13) - Romantic Comedy Okay, hasn’t this story been told already? Charlie Cantilini (Jennifer Lopez) has finally met the man of her dreams (geez, J-Lo, another one??), Dr. Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan). There's just one problem—his overbearing and controlling mother (Jane Fonda). Also stars the hilariously sassified Wanda Sykes. SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (PG) - Drama - Pants that travel? A sisterhood of pants? I think girls will even be embarrassed to go see a movie with such a lame title. But there you have it; the traveling pants and these pants sure get around! Four

friends are out shopping when they find a pair of pants that fit all of them perfectly. Hmmm. Then they decide these pants must be magic, so they buy them and send them to each friend for one week over summer as a way to stay in touch. The movie has a good cast (Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel) and a promising storyline, so if you can get over the title—and I’m sure your boyfriend/husband won’t, so don’t bother—it might be worth seeing.

Batman Begins - PG13 - Daily (12:15, 1, 2, 3:15), 4, 5, 7, 7:45, 8:30, 10

STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH - (PG-13) - Action/Adventure, Science Fiction/Fantasy - The furry and lovable Chewbacca makes his anticipated return to the big screen in the last installment (really!) of the Star Wars trilogy. Get ready to witness the transformation of young Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) into the evil and deep-voiced man in black, Darth Vader (because, let’s face it, without the voice he would not be cool). The rest of the gang is ready for some action as well, including the bearded Obi-Wan Kenobi (sexy Scottish Ewan McGregor, mmmmm), the Senator Padme Amidala and her insane hair (Natalie Portman) and best of all, Yoda! People go crazy for that little green guy, agreed?… Too bad we all know how this trilogy ends.

What the hell are you lookin’ at?

‘Not Alone’ with Franti Michael Franti’s documentary and why I love him Michael Franti is famous for singing powerful messages of peace while strumming his gee-tar. He is most notably the front man for Spearhead and a former member of Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. He’s also my new fantasy boyfriend and I love him. And now he’s got a new documentary, too, called I Know I’m Not Alone, which chronicles Franti’s

I spoke with Franti by telephone recently about his film experiences. I was only on the phone a few minutes when I realized that he’s the Most Fabulous Being in Existence. Michael Franti, Michael Franti, Michael Franti… ahh… Maui Time Weekly: Hi, Michael! Forgive me for asking this but… what did you have for breakfast this morning? Michael Franti: I had this great drink called “I Am Beautiful.” There’s this place in San Francisco—Café Gratitude—where every item is an affirmation. I also had an “I Am Elated” enchilada. Wow. I think we could use a Café Gratitude here on Maui. I could really go for an “I Am Independently Wealthy” pancake right about now... So after filming your doc, what was one thing you didn’t realize going into it?

The first thing is—how hard it is to make a film! When we went to Iraq, Israel and Palestine, it was how war affects every person involved. And how the pain that comes about from war doesn’t lead us to be a more unified, more just world. It only leads to more fear, more violence. I know you must have a lot of intense memories of your time spent in the Middle East. But what was one standout moment of humility you remember? Getting on an airplane and the pilot telling us that in order to avoid shoulderlaunched missiles, he would have to nosedive [and take some sharp turns] to get to the airport. That was a very humbling, hair-raising experience. What about a moment of optimism or hope?

Meeting people who’ve suffered—kids in the hospital with their legs blown off from cluster bombs, and who are still

smiling. Time and time again, I met people who remained positive despite all the violence they’ve suffered. You know, living in America, we have people who complain they don’t get TV reception. What was a particularly scary moment for you? There were two—tons actually. There was the exhilarating plane ride, where we were screaming like we were on a rollercoaster. And then we land and immediately see, “We’re in a war here.” We’re driving and there were cars on the road that had been blown up and there were people still in them, on fire. I was talking to some soldiers where a big explosion happened—pretty soon, though, the explosions and gunfire became background noise. I guess if it’s not in your face, you just go on with your life.

smooth away tensions. Also, hearing other musicians there made me realize how important music is to everyone. Music is man’s right. Amen. So which song of yours was the best received there? “Never Too Late.” All the lyrics are “Don’t fear…” and it ends with “it’s never to late to start the day over…” People really responded to that. What album did you really respond to? Hmm… there were so many albums that changed my life. Probably the biggest was Uprising, by Bob Marley. That was the first time I ever heard reggae and I went back and bought the rest of his albums. I just loved the music and the rhythm. And then I heard what he had to say, and I how he would plant seeds in music that later take hold.

Any lighthearted moments there? Yeah. I think you do that pretty well, too. I wrote this little song in Arabic with just one word—“Habibi.” It means “sweetheart” or just your really close friend. Everyone says it there as a greeting. Like, “Hey dude!” They say, “Habibi! Habibi!” So I made up this song and everyone would dance. It proves that with just a few chords on the guitar and a little effort, music can

Geminis are generally quite well-adjusted people. Your dual nature is rife with internal checks and balances: You’re sick, but at least you’re funny—self-absorbed but affectionate, overly-talkative but entertaining, spoiled but generous, picky but adventurous, and so on… However, this array of internal contrasts can be incredibly confusing to some simpler folk who only believe in, or are, one thing at a time. Because you actually need a few of these dolts on your side (or at least doing your bidding), help them. Dumb down your self-presentation so they can actually wrap their tiny minds around it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Sand fleas. Your week is infested with them. You’ve developed your emotional buffer zone; emotional tides no longer seriously erode your shoreline of self-belief. But all that work won’t help you now. There are no floods expected, only a plague of pests, metaphorical sand fleas biting your ankles and tender places and making you itchy and bitchy. There’s not much to be done, this isn’t a beach you can simply walk away from. These tenacious critters are likely to come with you in any case. There’s only one thing you can do: Marshal your patience, sit down and pick them off, one by one. Whether you crush or drown them is up to you.

Call 661-3786x5 by 4 pm on Monday to get your ad in Maui Time Weekly!

Felling a tree requires tremendous stamina and effort, especially one as old and thick as the one before you. However, you require more than determination (which you have in spades). Without the proper tools you’re screwed. Right now you’re equipped with a puny steak knife, bound to snap before you’ve properly penetrated the bark. Luckily there are better tools (read: people) who can help you get the job done. Be careful who you choose, though. Avoid the top-notch superstar. S/he may be the metaphorical equivalent of a chainsaw, but s/he works solo and breaks down or runs out of fuel easily. A better choice might be the pair of good old-fashioned ax-wielding lumberjacks who don’t need to shine and are just happy to get the job done.

If not now, when?

HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING If you feel that you have been potentially exposed to HIV and would like Free, Confidential and Anonymous testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. It is important to know your HIV status so that you do not unknowingly pass the virus to others, also early detection is vital to your health and treatment. The Maui AIDS Foundation now offers Drop-In HIV Counseling and Testing (No appointment necessary) Drop in hours are Mon.-Fri. 8:30am to 4:30pm, Wed. 8:30am to 7pm 1935 Main Street, Wailuku For more information on HIV/AIDS, STD’s including Viral Hepatitis and HIV Counseling and Testing call the Maui AIDS Foundation at 242-4900. In Hana call 248-7801, Lanai 5656722, and Molokai 553-9086.

You may not realize this, but the first impression most people get of you is of a very high-maintenance person. It’s partially accurate; after all, you are one. What isn’t immediately apparent, however, is that your maintenance routines are almost completely self-contained. In other words, what you and I know and they don’t is that you’re very good at taking care of nearly all your own needs, as well as accepting some of the burdens those around you carry. The new people who are just getting to know you need to know this about you, too, and fast, or they’ll ditch you for someone who seems easier to handle (but actually isn’t).

When you subscribe for 3 months of bi-weekly service – (A $25 value!) New customers only – offer expires 6/30/05

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You’re not a storm-the-gate type. Flat-out attacking a fortress, like the one before you, just isn’t your style, what with all the flying arrows, boiling oil, and moat full of raw sewage and attack mermaids. You’re much more likely to lay in a quiet siege. Starve them out. You’re patient. Eventually, whoever you’re trying to get to has got to open up, right? Nope. Not this time. There’s too much pride lurking inside those metaphorical castle walls. They’re not going to let you in (or come out) until you’ve shown them that you really want it bad. In other words, unless you make a convincing show of trying to scale the battlements or batter down the door, they’ll starve before they let you (or anybody) in.

PLACING AN AD IS EASY!

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Every one of your exes still masturbates to your memory. It doesn’t matter if you ended on horrible terms, screaming filthy curses at each other (knowing you, that’s happened at least a couple of times), or if you never saw each other again after that final bout of break-up sex. I can virtually guarantee they still think about you. This is one of your superpowers (Scorps being good in bed is a cliché because it’s true). Don’t abuse it (hopefully you learned that lesson after your 138th screw-up). However, because wielding your magical ability to make a permanent sexual imprint on someone can yield a win-win (or even a win-win-win) this week, please do so.

Watch your weight, baby. You’ve got to stay fit and lean (or at least no fatter than you already are) for this summer’s adventures. Unfortunately, this week’s astrological influences aren’t going to help you in this department. If you don’t develop some serious resistance you’re going to have to buy a man-bra (guys) or baggy-sleeved shirts to hide arm-flab (ladies). I know I’m not painting a pretty picture here, but I’ve got to keep it real. It’s an easy choice, really. Watch: butter and chocolate now, or sex and excitement all summer.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Caps are the fiercest partiers in the zodiac. Yeah, Scorpios appear to be more dangerous, and Aries are certainly louder. But no one knows how to turn it up better than you; it’s that whole work hard, play hard thing. With the imminent Full Moon dosing your sign with three different flavors of intoxication next week, you’re in for some wild times, and you’ll probably end up playing harder than you have yet this year. You know what that means at the moment, though, right? If you want to rock out with your cock out next week (so to speak), you need to press it to the grindstone this one.

Aren’t you forgetting something? It feels like it might be something obvious, right? Like leaving your house without pants on. Get used to the nagging feeling that you’re missing something big. It’s astrologically-induced. What you’ve actually forgotten (or perhaps procrastinated about so long you delusionally thought it went away) isn’t your sunglasses, wallet or house key. It’s a little something you were supposed to say or do ages ago. The reason the stars are plaguing you now is that it’s almost too late. Either you do it right now, whether you’re “ready” or not, or you screw (and kick) yourself at least until 2006.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) A stand of saplings has sprouted up in your spiritual backyard. They’re pretty, but they’re blocking sunlight from hitting your house and, more importantly, the garden you need to survive. They’ve got to go, no matter what. Whether any trees (or dreams, or relationships) need to die, though, is up to you; they’re still small enough to dig up and transplant, if you’re willing to put in the time and effort. Which will you inflict on these saplings: tremendous suffering (and possible survival), or a quick death? It’s a tough choice, but do all concerned a favor by making it consciously, and not by default.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You, you, you you. You you, you you you, you you. You you. You and more you. Pretty boring, right? Don’t do it to people around you, please. We already know it’s all about you. Driving the point home is just plain obnoxious, and not even in an endearing way. Given this week’s astrological influences, it might be difficult to imagine that everyone you know isn’t fascinated by whatever strokes of fantastic or horrible fortune have lately befallen you. They’re not interested, though, at least not as consistently or passionately as you think. We love you, dearly, but this kind of babble is best reserved for your therapist or diary. Give us what we want, darling: the lowdown, not the breakdown.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I love the way a ripe, juicy peach tastes after a day in the ocean, the sharp sweet tang as it washes the salt from my mouth. (Grapes, strawberries, plums and nectarines are good, too.) I only mention it because you’re fruit this week, too. Not in any tacky slangy way, but in exactly this one: you have the power to provide a refreshing and satisfying contrast to the bitter ocean most of the people you know are stuck swimming in all day, with just a joke or a smile. You can’t imagine how much they need (and will appreciate) what you have to offer. Please don’t deny them.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Live Big During courtship, a moose’s neck becomes swollen, his eyes bloodshot, and his temper short. At least he doesn’t have to dance. - Moosehead beer coaster “Hi girls!” says Mike, the big, smiling bear of a bartender at Idini’s in Wailuku. “Baby, whatcha want to drink, honey?” Sasha and I order our Jack and waters. Then Mike walks out from behind the bar to give us hugs and to thank us for coming. We look around the joint. There are no other women. Six guys—locals, about 38-68 years old—sit on stools around the bar. Two men are shooting stick. They are wearing professional billiard pool gloves, which are sort of like half-gloves that are used to reduce friction and make the pool shaft slide easier, making your stroke more consistent. Sounds dirty, doesn’t it? “What’s with the gloves?” asks Sasha. “Is it in honor of Michael Jackson today?” The gentlemen introduce themselves to us, and invite Sasha to play. Mike interrupts. “I haven’t seen you in awhile,” he says. “I’ve been surfin’,” says Sasha. “You?” “I been surfin’ Breakwall and then Harbor Lights was breakin’,” says Mike. “I cannot surf Launiupoko—too crowded. I’d rather be with our gang when this side breaks.” Sasha turns back to the pool players. “Are you left-handed?” she asks, pointing to his gloved hand. “Oh, you can use these for left or right,” he says. “Do you have a face you make when you hit a shot?” she asks. Then she demonstrates a couple possibilities. Another man sitting alone at the end of the bar asks Mike who we are. Mike tells him we’re his “good friends” and that if he meets us, he might read about it in the Maui Time. The man stays where he is but waves hello. “It’s so nice to see you,” Mike says to us. “It’s been a cock fest in here for four hours!” “You know it’s the Year of the Cock,” says Sasha. At this point, I feel a presence over my left shoulder and look up. “Is that your diary?” asks a man—possibly the youngest in the bar. “You’re not a private investigator, are you?” I assuage his fears, and tell him that I merely go to bars and write about the joys and follies in the quest for inebriation and the fleeting moments of happiness therein. He seems to like this answer and even does a little victory dance for me. “You guys like play us?” asks the pool player again. “Me and my uncle here?” “I gotta drink my whiskey first—I play better,” says Sasha. “You’re professionals.” “No!” he says. “We small kine amateurs!” “Uncle, you’re not too much,” says Mike. “You’re three much!” The Best of Zapp & Roger blasts on the stereo and Mike tells us a story of when he first moved to Maui from the Big Island. He was at a bar in Kihei, and there were three ladies at the bar with three pills in front of them. “I said, ‘Oh, you not feeling well?’” says Mike. “They said, ‘No, this is to make you feel good on the dance floor.’ Then they danced all sexy with each other and being the perfect gentleman that I am, I got right in between them.” Two bikers come in, order drinks and sit quietly at a table. The music of Earth, Wind and Fire has now facilitated the most enthusiastic clapping and high-note singing with the rest of the bar. Uncle Bruce unloads bags of food next to us, including pickled mango, and offers chopsticks to Sasha and me. A woman in pink walks in and sits down. “Hey! What are you doing?” she asks me, from several seats away. “She’s writing words to the beat of the song,” said Sasha. “Oh, okay.” As a bitchin’ saxophone solo in “Got To Get You Into My Life” kicks in, Sasha and I wonder what would happen if we cheered to “capitalism.” Then we do it anyway. “I don’t like the sax—I never liked it in band or anything,” said Sasha. “Oh wait, I was never in band.” Uncle leaves and comes back with a mango, which he then gives to us as a show of friendship, sharing “not in mind, but in heart.” He also thanks us for our time and heads out the door, as the two bikers rev up their Harleys and with a deafening roar, ride away. Uncle watches momentarily, gets on his moped and honks—“beep beep”—before waving goodbye. Sasha and I are looking out the window, watching everyone leave, when she notices that the auto body yard across the street bears my surname. I explain that there’s no known connection. She redirects her attention to the semis in the same lot. “I wonder what it’d be like to drive a big truck like that,” she says. “I saw a dead body today—or, at least it looked like a dead body—in the back of a truck. But I just put on my blinker and turned.” Samantha Campos just flew to San Diego and the hell with the lot of you. MTW
