Coconut Wireless What Would Jesus Do? Vote for Duke, Apparently State Republican Party Chair Jonah Ka‘auwai has blurred the line between church and state before; in January, while angling for the chairmanship, he told supporters in an e-mail, “God imparted that my ministry is politics.” But this week, Ka‘auwai didn’t blur the line—he obliterated it. In a letter posted on the Hawaii Christian Coalition Web site, Ka‘auwai urged the faithful not to vote for Mufi Hannemann in the Democratic primary (under the assumption that Hannemann would be preferable to his Democratic opponent, Neil Abercrombie), and instead to support Republican frontrunner Duke Aiona, who faces no serious primary opposition. “Duke will win because the Church has been behind him the entire time operating in the POWER and the AUTHORITY of the NAME OF JESUS!” wrote Ka‘auwai. “If Duke Aiona does not win it will be the burden of the Body of Christ to bear so rather than preparing to have to deal with either Mufi or Neil winning the Church, we should be preparing for Duke to WIN. Neither Mufi Hannemann nor Neil Abercrombie is righteous and a vote for either in the primary or general election is succumbing to fear and advancing unrighteousness!” After devoting several more paragraphs to bashing Hannemann and quoting scripture, Ka‘auwai closed with this: “As a former men’s pastor and worship leader for 8 years, I am positioned here in the midst of politics to share the truth and expose the conspirators of a very corrupt system no matter what the cost. Too often, we as the Body of Christ are reacting to crisis [sic] like HB444. We need to fearlessly, like David did Goliath, run towards the unrighteous enemy. Duke Aiona’s Campaign for Governor is the Body of Christ’s opportunity to operate in the AUTHORITY and to be proactive. The Primary Election is the first

step to bringing back a righteous leader to the highest office in this State...” There are two ways to view Ka‘auwai’s remarks. The first is that it’s pure, cynical political calculation, that Ka‘auwai merely wants Aiona to face Abercrombie instead of Hannemann in November, since the differences between Duke and Neil— racial, cultural, ideological—will be easier to exploit. Then there’s the possibility that Ka‘auwai really is a Bible-thumping true believer who wrote that letter with a

So the question boils down to: do five consecutive full terms (the four Mateo has already served, plus the one he’s seeking) and a partial term equal “more than five consecutive full terms”? If there’s a silver lining, it’s that researchers were able to study the reclusive creature up close. “We certainly know more now than we did before,” said HCRF Director Jason Turner. “Hopefully that knowledge will improve the chances of future animals brought in for rehabilitation.” “If the animal could have survived on the love and heartfelt effort that our volunteers put into caring for him, he’d still be alive today,” added Assistant Director Jennifer Turner. “We even had people driving in from Kona each day to work the 12am-4am shift...we were all devastated when he passed away.”

Council Challenges Abound No one else pulled papers for Council Chair Danny Mateo’s Molokai seat, but that doesn’t mean he’s running unopposed. Last week, Nellie Laird-Woods of Lahaina filed a petition with the Second Circuit Court, arguing Mateo can’t run again because of term limits. Per the County Charter, no Councilmember can serve “more than five consecutive full terms in office.” Mateo was first appointed to the Council in 2002, after the death of

familiar issue: residency. Riki Hokama, who’s trying to reclaim his old Lanai seat, had a challenge against him dismissed on August 25 (the challengers have 10 days to appeal). Asked if any other challenges have come in, Kuwada replied, with an audible sigh, “No—thank goodness.”

his is the final installment in our series of primary election profiles; look for endorsements next week. This week, we examine the eleven candidates vying to be Mayor of Maui County.

Name: ALAN ARAKAWA Profile: Before becoming Mayor in 2002, Arakawa served for almost 20 years in the Department of Public Works, eventually heading up the department’s wastewater division. In July, Miller, who works in real estate, told The Maui News he wants to get the County “back into the business of building affordable housing.” Web site: Unknown Name: JONATHON OLSON Profile: A CPA and real estate broker who served as CFO of Maui Memorial, Olson touts his “diversified background,” calls himself “a problem solver and a leader” and says he “can make positive changes with the great workers at the County of Maui.” Web site: Jonathonolson.com Name: RANDY PILTZ Profile: Maui-born, Piltz spent part of his career on the Mainland as a sheriff and sales engineer for General Electric. He moved back to Maui in the ’70s and ran Piltz Electric, retiring in 2007. He currently heads up the state Land Use Commission and has also chaired the Maui County Planning Commission. SPIN CYCLE The Anti-Reformer... Last week, Oahu-based A-1 A-Lectrician Inc. filed suit in U.S. District court, seeking to strike down a 2005 Hawaii law that restricts the ability of state and county contractors to donate to political campaigns or actively support candidates. The man behind the suit is Indiana attorney James Bopp, Jr. So why is a Midwest lawyer worried about Hawaii’s campaign spending rules?

You probably haven’t heard of James Bopp, Jr., but you might remember Citizens United v Federal Elections Commission, which produced a controversial, 5-4 Supreme Court ruling that lifted a ban on corporate-backed political ads. Bopp was behind that case, too. In fact, he’s made a career out of fighting campaign finance reform (among other things, including abortion rights).

“If we do it right, I think we can pretty much dismantle the entire regulatory regime that is campaign finance law,” Bopp told the New York Times in January, adding, “we have been awfully successful, and we are not done yet.”

STYLING IT ON Time magazine reported in August that among the entrants in this year’s “Detroit Hair Wars” (showcasing 34 stylists working with 300 models) were The Hummer (stylist: “Little Willie”), in which a mass of extensions is shaped to resemble the vehicle, including four large tires—with “metal” wheels and front grid added—sitting upon the styled hair of model Sharv Bailey; and Beautiful Butterfly (stylist: Niecy Hayes), featuring extensions thinned, teased and stretched into four artistic “wings” arising from the styled hair of model Taja Hiu. Both stylings appear to be at least 2 feet long, dwarfing the models’ heads, and take at least 10 hours to prepare.

HERE’S A TIP, WAITRESSES: BE HOT After surveying 374 waitresses, professor Michael Lynn, who teaches marketing and tourism at Cornell University, concluded that customers left larger tips to those with certain physical characteristics such as being slender, being blond or having big breasts. Lynn told the Cornell Daily Sun in May that his study was important in helping potential waitresses gauge their “prospects in the industry.”

PERVERTS ON PARADE (1) James Burden, 55, was convicted of indecent exposure in Scotland’s Falkirk Sheriff Court in June based on a March incident when a neighbor looked out her window before dawn and saw Burden, naked, smoking a cigarette and masturbating while bouncing on her family’s outdoor trampoline. Burden said he did not know anyone would be watching at that hour. SEEING SPOTS “Traditional medicine” practitioner Pham Thi Hong is credited with freeing three men who had been convicted of a rape in 2000 and were serving 16-year prison sentences. According to Hong, men with

certain small spots on their ears are virgins, and since the men still have their spots, they could not have committed rape. Although Vietnam’s President Nguyen Minh Triet was reportedly impressed with Hong’s work and thus ordered the case re-opened, discovery of additional errors by police and prosecutors contributed to the recent decision to release the men.

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) Harry Jackson, 26, was in jail in Woodbine, Georgia, in March, on several minor charges such as driving on a suspended license. However, acceding to pressure from fellow inmates brought on by the jail’s non-smoking policy, Jackson agreed to break out, steal cigarettes at a nearby convenience store and break back in. “Don’t come back empty-handed,” one inmate supposedly warned him. Jackson was apprehended climbing back in over a fence. In May, a judge sentenced him, for the earlier charges plus the escape and subsequent burglary, to 20 years. (2) Royce Spottedbird Jr., 23, apparently once thought it cool to have his name tattooed on his neck. However, when he was pulled over in a routine traffic stop in April in Butte, Montana, and feared a warrant might be out on him, he gave the officer a bogus name. When he could not explain what “Royce Spottedbird Jr.” was doing on his neck, he was detained for obstruction of justice and eventually pleaded guilty. (And he was wrong about the warrant.) ■

A Living Legacy Through his music, films and stories, Eddie Kamae preserves the spirit of Hawaii

L

abels like “folk hero” and “living legend” are often applied to Eddie Kamae, although in their grandeur they actually under-serve his true contributions. In his 83 years—from stage to screen to page— Kamae has contributed immeasurably to the understanding and perpetuation of Hawaiiana. His mantle of awards, a small testament to his life’s work, include Congressional resolutions for service and outstanding accomplishments, multiple lifetime achievement awards from cities, academies and museums, inductions into various halls of fame, a Purpose Prize Fellow for social innovation and the National Heritage Fellowship Award, the highest federal award for folk musicians. Most notably of the original Sons of Hawaii—a band formed in the 1960s when Kamae joined forces with the late, great Gabby Pahinui and, later, Dennis Kamakahi—Kamae continues to produce albums featuring the Sons’ decade-spanning music, teaming with Mike Kaawa, Analu Aina, Ocean Kaowili and Paul Kim. A historian at heart, Kamae sought out the last living links to the source of the Hawaiian sound that’s been his life’s passion. By the late ’80s, he’d befriended many kupuna, who shared their stories with him—stories, according to Kamae, that needed to be told. Between 1988 and 2007, Kamae and his wife Myrna directed and produced nine award-winning documentary films as part of their Hawaiian Legacy Series. This year, the films are being released to the public on DVD for the first time, ahead of two new films slated to debut by 2012 (My Teachers Teach Me and Feeding the Soul). We screened three of the Kamae’s movies— all in stores and online now—plus Eddie Kamae and The Sons of Hawaii’s latest studio album, and thought them each a delight worth sharing.

ALBUM: Eddie Kamae & The Sons of Hawaii - Yesterday & Today Volume 2 ESSENTIAL TRACKS: “Pua O Ka ‘Ilima” (The ‘Ilima Blossom), “Koke‘e,” “Hui Wai Anuhea” (The Fragrant Waters Glee Club), and “Ho‘ina ‘Inau Mea Ipo Ka Nahele” (Love-making in the Forest) Winsomely humble yet articulate, the album features five Sons songs from “yesterday,” and seven from “today.” Liner notes include a unique backstory for each track, sharing translation insights and historic tidbits. Doused in all the sweetest luau smells and radiating with pastureland sunshine, it’s the perfect soundtrack for a country drive or family picnic. There’s something especially kolohe-sounding (and smile-eliciting) in the bouncing guitar riff of “Pua O Ka ‘Ilima,” which was written to pay “homage to Oahu’s honored ‘ilima blossom, loft Mount Ka‘ala and revered King Kahuihewa.” DVD: Luther Kahekili Makekau: A One Kine Hawaiian Man A snapshot of one of the most captivating characters of our (or any) age. Born on July 13, 1890 on Maui and reared on the Big Island, the infamous Luther Kahekili Makekau lived to nearly 100 years old, and throughout the documentary is described as a “rustler,” “a rascal” and “a rebel,” who came of age during the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and “roam[ed] these islands, a restless, warrior cowboy... a living encyclopedia of ancient knowledge, born a century too late,” possessing, “a form of warrior energy with no place to express itself.” The film is a wonderfully edited compilation of interviews with his descendants, those who knew him and the twinkling Makekau himself. It’s a joy to hear impassioned tales of this true paniolo, sometimes gorgeously and gloriously told in Hawaiian tongue by the likes of Ruth Kaholoaa and Rev. David Kaalakea. “He had a constitution that was so strong,” says Henry Bianchini in the film, “everyone wanted to know where his power [came] from.”

DVD: Listen to the Forest The Kamaes’ films have been widely integrated into school curriculum, and rightly so. As evidenced with Listen to the Forest, they strike a tone of pleasantly pretension-free academic authority, and effortlessly traverse the borderland between Hawaii’s unique ecology and cultural practices. “The forest is crying out, we need to listen... I don’t just mean the beautiful sounds of the birds and the wind in the ‘Ohi‘a, but the message of the old Hawaiians who lived close to earth and can still hear and remember,” says Eddie of the film. It focuses on hula and oral tradition’s weave to nature, kalo cultivation, the Hawaiian HappyFace Spider, the haunting tale of singing Hawaiian tree snails and the diversity of our tragic Native Hawaiian birds. DVD: The Hawaiian Way: The Art and Tradition of Slack Key Music With his gifts as both musician and

filmmaker, if there’s any story Eddie Kamae seems made to tell it is that of Ki Ho‘alu, or Hawaiian slack key music. Beginning with the style’s 1830s genesis and through to modern day, the documentary explores the uniqueness of the “slack” or “open” tunings through the insights of the masters—including Kamae’s late, legendary bandmate Gabby Pahinui of The Sons of Hawaii, and present-day master Ledward Kaapana. Accented throughout with archival footage, another unique feature of the film is a section on slack key sound specific to the island of Ni‘ihau, “whose music has a quality all it’s own”—neatly analogous to the Ki Ho‘alu as a whole. ■

hat began as a fake trailer in front of Grind House three years ago grew into a cult favorite and is now a feature length movie. Be careful what you wish for. This extension of a deliciously funny, tasteless three-minute coming attractions reel stars Danny Trejo as the title character, a former Mexican lawman on a revenge spree against a powerful cluster of corrupt gringos (played by Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson and Robert De Niro). Along the way, he woos an immigration agent (Jessica Alba, better than expected), meets up with his female counterpart (Michelle Rodriguez) and faces his lifelong nemesis (Steven Seagal!). Director Robert Rodriguez has created a new

genre: Mex-ploitation. Fans of intentional B-movies will have a ball, but it has a number of limitations, starting with its leading man. Trejo is a veteran character actor with scores of movies under his belt, but this is his first (and likely last) shot at top billing. Despite his considerable presence he’s an unlikely and unsatisfying leading man, even playing a role that requires little more than growling lines and taking lives. Michael Jai White’s wonderful turn in Black Dynamite demonstrated that it’s possible to give a fullfledged comic performance while spoofing the exploitation genre. Thankfully, Trejo is surrounded by possibly the year’s most delightfully off-the-wall cast. Rodriguez, as is his tendency, juggles more characters than he knows what to do with, but they all make the most of their screen time. It’s fun to watch Alba and Michelle Rodriguez get catty, and Cheech Marin elicits the biggest laughs as Trejo’s former partner in crime. Lindsey Lohan sends up her bad-girl

image in a rowdy supporting role, and De Niro hasn’t given a comic performance this outrageous since his goofy Stardust cameo. Rodriguez constantly reminds you that you’re not supposed to take any of this seriously, but the strongest aspect of the movie is the savage shots it takes at America’s border phobia. A couple of satirical political commercials, jabs at Mexican stereotypes and comments on U.S./Mexico relations will likely be conversation starters and are the boldest strokes here. Otherwise, the action scenes are letdowns (the Trejo/Seagal

showdown is sadly anti-climactic) and the movie isn’t as funny as it should be. In fact, of all the phony trailers shown throughout the criminally underrated Grind House (a joint effort by Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino) Machete was the least promising contender for an actual movie spinoff. Whereas “spreading da aloha” is code for promiscuity, to “practice aloha” is entirely pono—and the theme of this month’s Wailuku First Friday festivities. The night plays host to the opening ceremonies for the annual Festivals of Aloha (6pm), with honorary chairperson Danny Mateo and cultural adviser Kaponoani Molitau presiding, as well as a Mayoral Forum (8pm) hosted by the Maui Young Business Roundtable at the Iao Theater. Folks 21 and over will be happy to hear there will be both a beer garden (starting at 5pm)—in support of the Na Aikane O Pu‘ukohola Heiau, a national historic PHOTO BY KATHLEEN WALLING FRY site—and an organic wine tasting at Cafe O‘Lei (call 986-0044 for reservations). But mostly, it’s an event for the whole ‘ohana, with lots of street vendors and ono grinds. And there’s always an abundance (sometimes an over-abundance) of entertainment up and down the blocked-off-to-traffic Market Street. This month features Weldon Kekauoha (pictured) at Native Intelligence, Kua‘aina at Maui Thing, Keoni Manuel’s Halau Hula o Na Pua o Pakipika and Te Tiare Patitifa at the Wailuku Banyan Tree Park, plus the Arts Education for Children Group presenting live music at the Wailuku Coffee Company throughout the night. Come hungry, bring everyone you have aloha for, and have enough fun to hold you over ’til next month.

Over 100 dedicated hula dancers will take to the stage for a concert titled Na Mele O Ku‘u Pu‘uwai - Songs of my Heart, from kumu hula and recording artist Uluwehi Guerrero’s Halau Hula Kauluokala. Of course, Guerrero himself will put his powerful pipes to masterful use, performing selections from all three of his studio albums, including his latest, Uluwehi Sings Na Melel Hula Aloha - Beloved Hula Songs, which this year won three Na Hoku Hanohano awards for Liner Notes, Hawaiian Album of the Year and Best Traditional Album of the Year. Guerrero refers to tracks on that album as “musical photographs,” and audience members will literally have the opportunity to see these songs come to life with expressive hula hands, costuming and set design during this highly anticipated concert (the likes of which he and his halau host only every other year). The night will also include a special appearance by Na Leo Lani O Maui community choir, under the direction of Gale Wisehart, and is an absolute must-attend event for all hula people, and hula people at heart. 242-7469; mauiarts.org

It’s always a good day for a leisurely drive Upcountry, but no better day than this Sunday to visit Tedeschi Winery and Ulupalakua Ranch, for their special Ulupalakua Remembers event. Once you arrive on the winery grounds, your ears will be treated to the string-picking stylings of Joshua Kahula with Derick Sebastian (12-3pm) and, from Lanai, Polihua (3-4pm). Thanks to good ol‘ Uncle Ron and my telephone book of bad habits, I’ve got the kind of freakish back fat that could be mistaken for ight-aiding appendages. Couple that with hair follicles feisty enough to make even the Missing Link jealous, and I’m a twice-certiďŹ able circus freak. Also: not much of a beach person. It isn’t that I don’t like the water—I love it—but being a country kid means comfortably hiding under jeans and jackets and, before you know it, building up a healthy layer of blubber for a long winter that will never come. But the ocean—on an island and for an islander—is unavoidable. So this week, I put aside my inhibitions and baked not one but two salmon-colored layers onto my otherwise hoary esh, thanks to a pair of unique seafaring adventures.

he ďŹ rst was a maritime expedition last Wednesday, aboard the PaciďŹ c Whale Foundation’s Intrigue, as the Maui Ocean Center released six juvenile honu into the waters off South Maui’s Pu‘u Olai. Of the 50 some-odd folks on board (including 25 lucky students from Kihei Charter School), I was the only one wearing a beanie. This was bafing. I know it’s been a while for me, but I assumed beanies were mandatory for boat-boarding. Sure, I was cheating a bit in that I wear my beanie so much it’s knitted itself to my head, but could I have removed it I wouldn’t have, as it seemed a fair homage to Jacques Cousteau. Fortunately, John Gorman, head curator at the Ocean Center, is a sprite incarnation of Cousteau, so I didn’t feel too awkward with my lonesome head garment. And like his famous doppelganger, Gorman is brimming with knowledge. One of the more interesting facts he shared is that the turtles—hatched in captivity at Sea Life Park Hawaii and shipped via air cargo to the Valley Isle at the tender age of about two months—were reared for two years by his staff in preparation for their release and fed a careful diet that mirrors what they’ll eventually be eating in the wild. I felt hunger pangs for them, and so helped myself to another croissant from the cabin. Snacking, I peered for some time at green sea turtles, who were not so much green as they were black and kissed with ehu-like wisps of ame. Etched with a Dremel tool into the rear of their shells were two letters,

“Mâ€? on the left and one of “Aâ€? through “Fâ€? to distinguish each of the six. Lingering around the tubs for too long, I had a knack for getting in the way and nearly collided with one of the (cuter) caretakers, who was focused on readying the green sea turtles to be torpedoed out into the wet, wild blue yonder. Someone handed him one of the 30-pound creatures, but he refused it saying, “No, that’s MA. Where’s MF?â€? He then reached into one of the tubs and pulled out a turtle that looked exactly like the other, saying, “There’s my boy!â€? “Why’s he your boy?â€? I asked, clearly annoying him. As MF apped his powerful ďŹ ns and the caretaker exed to maintain his grip, he replied, “Well, he’s got a bit of a personality, as you can see.â€? After oli and other rituals by kahu Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell, Sr., the turtles were one by one carried into the water, and they ew furiously out of view into the deep. Everyone cheered and the sea’s temperament seemed to respond too, as it was astoundingly malia for the whole morning, until we hit a stiff headwind at the very end of our voyage.

y second ocean expedition needs little explanation beyond its title: “Gay Surf Sunday.â€? Friend of the paper and MauiTime blogger Julie “Cocoâ€? Yoneyama (@JulieYakaCoco, cocosays. com) had invited me to surf at Launiupoko with her and her crew of mahu dudes. Needless to say, it was an invitation I couldn’t pass up, as I neither surf nor am gay. More than anything, it made me wonder why I’d shied away from the water for so long. Nobody died from looking at me and if I made a fool of myself, I’ve so-far survived the shame. Unfortunately, adults can sometimes be nearly as bad (especially when they get old), and regrettably, their unreasonable demands can’t be denied or corrected as easily as a four-year-old’s. Nevertheless, coping with someone who is just that shortsighted and illogical is this week’s task. You’ll need phenomenal patience and luck, but persistence and resolve most of all. Also, remember that when reason fails (as it probably will), the best weapon left in your arsenal is probably humor.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Don’t let loyalty cloud the truth. If someone you loved did something wrong, of course it’s perfectly acceptable for you to defend them, anyway—some might even call it admirable. However, just be clear about precisely what you’re doing, and why you’re doing it. If loyalty trumps morality, so be it, but don’t let it distort reality. Convincing yourself that they didn’t do the bad thing or that it wasn’t so awful, just so that you can be on their side—that would be sort of delusional. It’s okay to love and protect someone despite the fact that they were wrong. Own that.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Like anything else, technology like Facebook and cellphones can be used to either bring yourself closer to other people or to alienate yourself from them. It all depends on how you use them, and with what intentions. I’ve seen people be slaves to their phones; they wouldn’t dream of letting them go unanswered, even if it meant interrupting a social event they were already partaking in. I believe that when you let tools shape how you live your life, you’re making a mistake. Instead, form a vision of what your life and interactions should look like, and then figure out how to make the tools available to you help bring that about.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Well-meaning parents often drive their children directly towards whatever it is they want them to steer clear of. By being a source of confusing anger and stern reprimands, they make the forbidden ever so much more comforting and desirable, whether it’s a “bad” boy/girlfriend, cigarettes, or booze. There’s a way to be compassionate, and to, ultimately, create much more desirable alternatives. When considering how to guide someone you love through a difficult situation, remember the above example. Negativity or anger are more likely to exacerbate than help. Can you see how being a loving, compassionate presence, one that allows for and creates the possibility of better choices, would make them more likely to actually pursue those options?

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Even though you get where they’re coming from, you may be in a position where you must tell someone that their demands are simply unreasonable or unrealistic. Given their state of mind, this won’t be easy, and should be approached with caution (beware of flying crockery!). However, allowing their delusions to continue by tacitly agreeing to them (and not actively disagreeing may be construed as exactly that) would be a grave mistake that would probably result in even more angst (and projectiles). Wear protective gear if necessary, but step up and provide the reality check they desperately need (and may not “want”).

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) How well-established and clear are your boundaries? I suspect that many of the problems you’re experiencing right now are caused by a lack of clearly-established and communicated limits. You’ll find that once you make it obvious what you expect, as well as what you will or won’t accept, most of the people concerned will do their best to honor your wishes. You may also discover that the rare occasions when they do cross a line are both more forgivable and more correctable. Stop blaming other people for intruding on your comfort zone, when you haven’t really made the effort to let them know just where that is.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Here’s the problem: Every time you’ve gotten hurt, it’s made you more reluctant to trust and be vulnerable. While that’s understandable, it’s hardly healthy or likely to lead to greater happiness. This week, you must begin to focus on a new direction. Instead of allowing your past experiences to progressively narrow and limit your world and shrink your horizons, let them instruct you. Here’s a revolutionary concept: Everything you’ve been through should make you quicker to trust, not slower, because after all you’ve experienced you should have a better idea who’s worthy of it—and who’s not.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) When you look in the mirror, I’m sure what you see there isn’t perfect (and if you think it is, get a second opinion from someone who’ll be honest with you). Some days you’ll like what you see there better than others.
