LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR KNOWS HOMELESS, CLICHES
SOUPER LETTER
One night at church before my ride came, I was talking with a sweet smelling, well dressed, well shaven man of very, very upright character. Shortly my ride came and the driver told me that the man I had been talking to was homeless. From my layman’s perspective, you couldn’t, in no way whatsoever, tell. There was not the “tell-tale signs” of homelessness on him. Now, in Maui Time, a woman (at least it sounds like a woman speaking through the writing) said for a brief moment she saw two “trustafarians” asking for money (Eh Brah, Jan. 31, 2008). She then divulged into saying she’s seen their type before, dreadlocked hair, ragged clothes and “faces that were too clean” for them to be homeless. How does she know? How do you know what homelessness looks like? Have you been there? Have you spent time there? Who are you to be so free with your judgments of others? You cannot judge a book by its cover. -Ku‘uleililia Robinson, via email
Great column (Rob Report, Jan. 31, 2008)! Guess I’ll have to give up my carrot, ginger, cashew soup in a box as well as Silk... Your soup recipe sounds good, but what about that “soup” in the harbor? Keep up the info! -Lois Inez, via Mauitime.com
MECO IS WHERE?! First time I’ve seen “MECO” and “one meter sea level rise” in the same paragraph anywhere (Coconut Wireless, Jan. 31, 2008). Has anybody taken a look at the location of MECO’s generators? -Kihei Kiwina, via Mauitime.com
DANCING AROUND THE LAW How is it that in the year of 2008, there is a rule that prohibits dancing unless in a designated area (LC Watch, Jan. 31, 2008)! What exactly is the reasoning behind this! Why haven’t the Hawaiian people, who are associated with dancing as a huge part of their culture and heritage, lining up at the LC meetings and having their voices heard? Dancing is a part of all of our backgrounds from all ethnicities. [It’s] a form of expression, a form of communication and a form of entertainment. How is it that in a place that conjures
up visions of the hula dancing and the beautiful storytelling of its people, can be illegal unless you’re “in a designated area.” I think something’s out of “whack” here in this place so many call Paradise. It’s time for voices to be heard and this ridiculous “law” abolished once and for all. What if someone decides to start speaking of Hawai‘i not as a place of fun, where a person is free to exercise his or her right to freedom of expression, but as a place that offers music entertainment except when you start to sway or move or dance in an area that the LC has not designated as a “LEGAL” place to dance you or the owner could be cited by the liquor control department! I would sign my name to this letter, but I am in the hopes of someday being in the nightclub business here, and the threat of retribution from the LC scares the hell out of me. I urge everyone who is of the same thinking as I am to sign the new petition that is being made by the Maui Dance Advocates and attend the March 12 hearing and let your voice be heard. Let the LC know that they work for the people and are paid by the people. -Mark, via Mauitime.com

Buying Power
Nothing to Wear?
Will the State of Hawai‘i finally stop buying clothes from sweatshops? First, a generator in the textile mill exploded. Then a boiler blew. Soon the whole three-story sweatshop was ablaze. The old building had poor fire-fighting equipment and no emergency exits. Many of the doors, following standard procedures, were locked to keep employees inside. Press accounts vary wildly, but at least 85 people—many of them teenage girls—burned to death and another 150 were injured. While sounding a lot like the notorious 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York (which killed 146 mostly female workers), this disaster actually occurred a bit more recently—Feb. 24, 2006, in the KTS Textile Industries factory in Chittagong, Bangladesh. According to labor union reports, the workers were apparently making underwear for shipment to U.S. correctional institutions. For too long, national, state and local governments have been buying clothes from third world sweatshops. The State of Hawai‘i has been no different, buying clothes and uniforms from companies like Jansport, Fruit of the Loom, Hanes and Gildan which are known to pay factory workers a few dollars a day as they work in hazardous sweatshops (for more on this see our Dec. 30, 2004 story “Dirty Clothes: Must the County do business with sweatshops?”). So far, just six states—California, Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania—prohibit government agencies from buying from sweatshops. At long last, there’s a move in the state Legislature to make Hawai‘i the seventh state. The bill SB 2409, sponsored by state Senator Gary Hooser (D, Kauai, Ni‘ihau) and carrying the notvery glamorous title “Relating to Public Procurement,” bans state and county agencies from doing business with companies that use sweatshops. “The impetus came from Representative Roy Takumi [D, Pearl City],” Hooser said. “We need to ensure that the buying decisions we make as a state are from sources that have good labor policies.”
There are four main parts to the bill. Foremost, the bill establishes a “sweatfree public procurement policy and code of conduct” which requires that the state only deal with vendors who pay above-poverty wages, don’t discriminate, allow workers the right to assemble and bargain collectively and provide safe working conditions, among other requirements. The bill also requires all potential vendors to tell state officials where their factories are located and the wages they pay their workers. In addition, SB 2409 asks Hawai‘i officials to work with their counterparts in other states in investigating labor problems in the vendors and monitor their factories. And lastly, the bill sets up a “Sweatfree advisory group” made up of labor activists, union officials and agency representatives who will monitor state procurement policies and actions. Anti-sweatshop activists are thrilled with the bill. “From my perspective, SB 2409 is the best piece of sweatfree procurement legislation proposed in any state or locality thus far,” Bjorn Claeson, Executive Director of SweatFree Communities, said in testimony submitted to the state Senate Committee on Tourism and Government
Operations on Jan. 29. “By ensuring that tax dollars do not subsidize profiteering from human rights abuses, SB 2409 will not just benefit sweatshop workers; it will also help to create a more stable and sustainable business environment.” But state procurement agencies aren’t so pleased. Officials from the Department of Accounting and General Services and the State Procurement Office have asked the state Senate to reject SB 2409. “The State has no jurisdiction over foreign manufacturers of apparel, garments, accessories, equipment, materials, and supplies,” state Comptroller Russ K. Saito told the Senate Committee on Tourism and Government Operations. This is nonsense. The State of Hawai‘i, as a customer, has buying power. We can pick and choose where to buy clothing and uniforms. Yes, SB 2409 will require state officials like Saito to do a little more work researching potential vendors and questioning their labor practices, but I doubt it’s anything he and his staff can’t handle. In any case, things are looking good for the bill. On Feb. 5 it passed out of the Tourism and Government Operations committee “with amendments” and now faces a full Senate vote. MTW

ROBREPORT
BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET
Doorway into Light In pursuit of green burials and dying with dignity The inescapable truth about life is that nobody gets out of it alive. Yet in America, death and dying are discussed in hushed tones, if at all, and often carried out behind closed doors. Big corporations, as with many other economic sectors, largely control the funeral industry. Corporateowned funeral homes often make it difficult for mom-and-pop undertakers to compete, and may steer bereaving families towards more expensive options, up-selling embalming services, coffin and headstone choices, casket liners and other extras. Additionally, memorial parks are extensively single-use consumers of open space at a time when a growing population of baby-boomers inexorably approaches their moment of destiny— letting go of their physical bodies. Maui residents are fortunate to have the opportunity for valuable inquiry into what happens at the end of our lives and the lives of our loved ones. In 2006 interfaith minister Bodhi Be founded Ipuka I Ke Ao— Doorway Into Light—with his wife Leilah and Ram Dass as a non-profit foundation promoting environmentally responsible “green burials” and a community educational series, which includes ongoing death and dying support groups. As a hospice volunteer since 2001 and minister for 27 years, Be recognized that such events are “incredible community bonding experiences. When someone close to us dies, something happens to us. We may feel more fragile, more authentic.” Part of Ipuka’s mission statement is, “To teach awareness of death as a natural and sacred, family centered and community centered experience, and to ‘invest’ it with sacredness and ceremony.” As Be researched current funeral industry practices, he realized how toxic and wasteful their practices are. The following list of materials that also get buried with our loved ones in the U.S. comes from the Natural Burial website: • 827,060 gallons of embalming fluid (mainly formaldehyde) • 90,272 tons of steel (caskets) • 2,700 tons of copper and bronze (caskets) • 1,636,000 tons of reinforced concrete (vaults) • 14,000 tons of steel (vaults) • 30-plus million board feet of

LC Watch Adjudicatin’ Time I haven’t been to an actual Liquor Control Adjudication Board case hearing since Nov. 8, 2007. This is mostly because the LC hasn’t held any case hearings since Nov. 8, 2007, and thinking back, that wasn’t really a big deal, since it dealt with just a single licensee who was pleading no contest to one count of serving minors and one count of over-service. It didn’t used to be this way. Back in 2004, when I started this column, the board held case hearings every month, laying out three, four or even more licensees on a variety of charges—serving minors, getting caught in stings, serving intoxicated customers and even having too many people in an aisle. Yeah, that actually came up once.
Bodhi Be
hardwoods (much tropical; caskets) “Embalming is incredibly toxic,” Be says, noting that body fluids drained from the body are often just sent “down the drain.” Europe, he says, is banning embalming in many locations because the chemicals are beginning to show up in the groundwater. Apart from the Egyptian culture around the time of the pharaohs, embalming is a relatively new practice. It began around the time of the American Civil War, and a historical photo of Abraham Lincoln lying in his coffin is one of the first-recorded open casket ceremonies of the era. The United States is the only country in the world with widespread embalming. Still, the majority of states do not require it, and in some places the Federal Trade Commission requires that funeral homes inform customers of other options. Be is looking for a site on Maui to establish as a natural burial ground. These grounds—where people would be buried in biodegradable containers, cardboard boxes or cloth shrouds without embalming fluid or synthetics and returned to the earth to compost into soil nutrients with a forest of trees marking the spot—are an emerging trend

The LC usually runs its minor decoy stings during the summer months, but they must have been nailing dozens of establishments because I remember cases involving minor decoys popping up year-round. (The LC used to name the 18 and 19-year-olds they used as decoys in their reports and even hearing agendas, until I started printing the names.) Anyway, vacation time is apparently over. On Feb. 7, the Adjudication Board will reconvene for an actual case hearing. It’s not going to be a busy hearing, given that just two licensees are up on charges: Nachos Grande in Honokowai for allegedly getting caught in a minor decoy sting and Kahului Ale House for allegedly serving a minor. The former is pleading guilty, the later no contest—a distinction with little meaning, as the board will let both establishments make a statement. It’s not clear whether either case will point to a larger issue of significance (ie, be newsworthy). But what is clear is that this week I get to go back to work.

GREAT ‘KAPALUA’ NEWS
Photo: Pietro Ortiz
As most of the state now knows, the travel website TripAdvisor.com has named Kapalua Bay Beach as the third best place in the U.S. to propose marriage (beaten by Central Park and the Grand Canyon, of all places). Anyway, what most of the state may not know is that this is wonderful news for Maui Land & Pine. See, the company owns the name “Kapalua.” Now back in November 2005, the company Golf Getaways challenged ML&P’s alleged ownership of “Kapalua” in U.S. District Court, arguing that the word was a non-trademarkable Hawaiian place name. But according to Teri Gorman, Maui Land & Pineapple Company Vice President for corporate communications, that case ended in ML&P’s favor. “ML&P and Golf Getaways have settled this case with both parties agreeing to keep all terms and conditions of the settlement confidential,” Gorman emailed me on Jan. 11. “Golf Getaways has acknowledged that ‘Kapalua’ and the butterfly logo are the registered trademarks of Kapalua Land Company Ltd., a subsidiary of Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc.”
TERMINATED If it could, HT would drop three more notches this week after Pacific Business News reported that CEO Michael Ruley has been fired, and that his “turnaround artist” replacement, Stephen Cooper, made his name by taking over Enron in 2002 after that company “imploded.” MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM
as good as any (early outs don’t really play well with middle class voters). But if you really start to think about this idea, you can’t help but see that there’s something perverse about it. Here’s a state taxpayer-funded government that will set up temporary but still habitable tents for people who’ve been convicted of crimes, but it won’t do the same thing for poor people who haven’t committed crimes but just lack homes.
THURSDAY, Jan. 31
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 30 Tents. That’s how the State of Hawai`i is going to address the issue of prison overcrowding. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, Governor Linda Lingle is asking the federal government for $12.65 million so her administration can build seven 7,064-square-foot “Sprung Instant Structures” at various prisons across the state. Each of these structures (they’re really just tents) would hold 64 inmates, and two of them would go in at Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC). Now prison overcrowding is a legitimate issue, and I suppose this solution is

Show of hands of all those who feel President George W. Bush would be pushing for immediate middle class tax cuts and rebates if 2008 was not an election year? Anyone? Such cynics you people are. Of course, the whole idea of a rushing through the congress an “economic stimulus package”—now endorsed by both Democratic U.S. Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser—seems to have bipartisan appeal. Too bad spending money is not something Americans already do enough of. Spiraling credit card debt, sub-prime mortgages: these are the things that sent our economy careening towards recession in the first place (and our ballooning national debt into the hands of Chinese bond-holders, but that’s another story entirely). Alas, our elected officials feel that quickly sending everyone checks for $600 will end recession fears. This, as writers far more talented and astute than I have noted, is lunacy. “The experts caution that for maximum stimulus effect, we must be sure to spend it immediately,” Michael Kinsley wrote with more than a little sarcasm in the Jan. 24 issue of Time Magazine. “No squirreling it away for a rainy day. In drinking circles, they call this hair of the dog: to cure a hangover, you have another drink.”
This is great, except that these days, no one really knows what a “journalist” is. Ohshiro’s bill defines a journalist as someone “associated with any newspaper, magazine, news agency, press association, wire service, or radio or television transmission station or network,” but this is potentially leaving out a lot of people. What exactly is a “news agency?” Can a blogger who’s just one guy be a journalist? How about handsomely paid public relations people? And what about that guy who stands on the street corner holding a sign saying he’s the gay lover of the mayor a journalist? At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I’m going to say that Oshiro’s bill doesn’t go far enough—all those people I just hypothetically outlined are journalists, in my opinion. In fact, I think anyone who gathers and disseminates information to the general public is a journalist, irrespective of whether they have press passes, those bitchen reporter’s notebooks or miniscule paychecks.
FRIDAY, Feb. 1
SATURDAY, Feb. 2
It’s not as sexy as state Representative Joe Bertram (D, South Maui)’s call for a state-sanctioned “marijuana growing facility” on Maui—which got front-page play in today’s Maui News, but state Representative Blake Oshiro (D, Aiea, Halawa) has sponsored a new bill that’s every bit as important, timely and, yes, humane. I say these things because his bill (HB 2557, as outlined in an Associated Press story today) WILL PROTECT ME. It’s what we in the news business call a “shield law” and it’s designed to prohibit the government from jailing a “journalist”—like me—until he or she names his or her anonymous sources.
You know how the gas pump asks you to press a special key if you’re paying with a debit card as opposed to a regular credit card? Well, I just realized today (while at the gas pump) that I never press that key. Also, I realized that I don’t remove my card “rapidly” like the pump says, but I do so in a more leisurely, almost deliberate fashion. I’m not sure, but I’m beginning to think this means I’m a bad person.

More debt, anyone?
SUNDAY, Feb. 3 The Superferry is stuck in port until Monday with a busted rudder and has already lost 14 days of service due to the weather—four more days than the com-
pany told the state Public Utilities Commission it would miss in an entire year? The Maui News is reporting that Mayor Charmaine Tavares has banned county workers from using the boat for “official business?” The Advertiser is saying that the Maui Land & Pineapple Company—which poured a million bucks into Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. (HSF)—isn’t booking passage on the Alakai because “currently rates are not cost-effective?” What’s going on here? HSF has a lot of high-powered investors and executives with lots of friends in Washington and Honolulu— they got a law fairly easily passed exempting them from the state’s environmental review requirements, after all—and yet they seem to be… what’s the word? Ah yes: foundering. Tomorrow the Norwegian Cruise Lines—which has not been doing well financially (pesky American crewmembers with their American standard of living)—will send their Pride of Hawaii to Los Angeles and then Europe, where it will become the Norwegian Jade. Will the Alakai be far behind?
MONDAY, Feb. 4 Lest people think the state legislative calendar is filled with nothing but great bills, allow me to introduce HB 2455 and SB 3141, which seek end the practice of capping corporate donations to political candidates at $1,000. “If our legislature passes these bills, businesses will be able to give two thousand dollars to every House candidate, and four thousand to every Senate candidate,” George Fox, executive director of the good government group Citizen Voice, said in a press release sent out today (candidates for governor would be able to get $6,000 from corporations as well). “Add all those up, and that’s a huge amount of campaign money. So if I can only afford to give $25 to my candidate, what difference do I make?”
TUESDAY, Feb. 5 People are still worried about making a difference? How quaint. You sold me a “certified” used car. And it was great for about a week. Then the “check engine” light went on. Turns out the transmission was shot—thank God it’s still under warranty. So much for the supposed vigorous inspection of your “certified” used vehicles. But your service department assured me that I could continue driving the car like a granny for the two to three weeks it would take to ship a new (or refurbished) tranny from the Mainland. Even though I avoided driving the car—whose loan I haven’t even begun to pay off—it broke down again soon after. You told me to have it towed to the dealership, but got pissy when I had the gall to ask who would be paying for repairs to this lemon. The next morning I arrived on the tow truck with the car, only to hear the “service department” tell me that you don’t do loaners. But then you graciously offered me a rental for three days. Now let me get this straight: I’ve paid you guys $10,000 ($1,000 over Blue Book Value) for a car that I have to wait three weeks to drive, and all you guys offer me is a measly three-day rental?! Where’s the aloha in that?

across the nation. In a way, it’s the ultimate “back to the land” movement. His vision centers on changing cemeteries from a single purpose use that removes land forever from the public domain to a reforestation project/park/botanical garden with conservation easements that protect it and keep it in the public domain forever. The site would include a crematory and ceremonial hall or gathering place. Families could help dig graves and create individualized ceremonies for their loved ones. “Become a native tree when your body dies,” Be says. “Even the practice of ‘six feet under’ doesn’t make sense. All the soil micro-organisms that assist the natural decomposition process are in the top two feet.” According to the beatree.com website, “a natural burial that makes one’s body available as a full-spectrum nutrient source for the soil web does more for the planet’s biological system than cremation.” Cremation, too, is on the rise. Nearly 40 percent nationwide choose that alternative, with the Hawai‘i percentage even greater at 60 percent. From an ecologist’s point of view, cremation may be deemed more ecofriendly than a conventional burial, with the exception that it requires burning fossil fuels in a crematory, thus producing emissions. Long interested in environmentally friendly, healthful and spiritual solutions to the issues of everyday life, Bodhi Be has lived on Maui since 1975. He owned and operated Rainbow Menehune Sprouts, starting in 1982, and began Maui Juice Company in 1986. His juice blends— Ginger Blast, Strawberry Passion, Aloe Lime C Charge, Orange Garlic Rush and others—were the favorites of the health conscious crowd. In 1997 he moved to Twin Falls as part of a hui of owners who vowed to keep the access open to the public while living off-the-grid and farming organically in the lush Haiku country setting. He has been happily married for 23 years and has helped raise five children. Bodhi and Leilah Be have also helped organize and teach at Maui Sufi Camp for the past 25 years. “The Sufis,” Bodhi says, “refer to the day of one’s death as the ‘wedding day.’ It is the wedding of the soul with the Beloved or the Infinite.” Few cultures view one’s death and burial at such a distance as Americans, he says. “It was the baby boomers who helped bring home-

birthing out of the hospitals and back into the homes, back into vogue. Now with the boomers aging, there is the beginning of a movement to help bring the dying and burial process out of the ‘for-profit’ hands and back into the community’s hands. “When we hear about someone’s death, we automatically say, ‘I’m so sorry’ without even knowing the circumstances,” Be continues. “It may be that the loved one’s death brought final relief from painful illness and need not be viewed as a tragedy. Not to take away from the grief and mourning that accompany someone’s death—the spiritual understanding that who we are is not our body, and does not die and that love transcends the body—is so very important.” According to Be, people may also be unaware that they may legally keep the body of a deceased family member or friend at home up to 30 hours after death. That may allow the family and friends to bathe, annoint and dress their loved one as well as sing and pray together. After a medical examiner is notified to verify the passing, Hawai‘i statutes require burial, cremation or refrigeration within the 30hour period. Educating the community of their rights and choices around the dying process has been a central focus of Ipuka I Ke Ao. They have filled workshops with speakers like Jerri Lyons, founder and codirector of the Natural Death Care Project and director of Home Funeral Ministry. A second workshop featured Frank Ostaseski, who founded the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco in 1987—working with AIDS patients and others—and Metta Institute in 2004. A primary project of Metta Institute is the End-of-Life Care Practitioner Program that Frank leads with faculty member (and Maui resident) Ram Dass and many others. “The reflection on death is life-affirming,” Ostaseski says. “When we come into contact with the precariousness of life, we also begin to appreciate how precious it is, and then we want to live more fully.” Later this month is a third in the series of talks and workshops. Starting Feb. 21 and running to Feb. 23, I Puka I Ke Ao (co-sponsored by Hospice Maui) will feature an introductory talk and workshop with Ram Dass and Joan Halifax Roshi titled, “Living and Dying in Everyday Life.” Halifax is a Buddhist teacher, author and founder of the Upaya Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Though she has been involved with death and dying work for thirty years, this is the first time she has brought her teaching to Hawai‘i. The workshop will be held at the Rinzai Zen Mission near Baldwin Beach in Paia. Early discounts may be offered by signing up before Feb. 10. BRIGHT IDEAS Michael Windisch, proprietor of the Maltermeister Turm restaurant in Goslar, Lower Saxony, Germany, solved what has become a crisis for other restaurants since the state extended a smoking ban in August. Windisch opened three holes in an outer wall so that, in cold weather, a smoker need not venture outside but can stick his head and arms through the holes and puff away while remaining inside, according to a December report in Der Spiegel.
THE CONTINUING CRISIS In December, the city of Bangalore, India, staged its fifth annual marathon, with an elite group of runners officials thought would bring the city recognition in the world racing community, but problems occurred, the least of which were the city’s ubiquitous potholes and pollution. At about the 20 km mark, the leaders were chased down the street by barking dogs snapping at their heels. Twice during the race, runners were forced to stop and take breaks because impatient motorists were disregarding traf-

GREAT MOMENTS IN MATURITY John Hayes, 46, a Marietta, Ga., middle school coach, was arrested in December and charged as the person who drove a group of his students around at night so they could vandalize various Christmas yard decorations—in one case, leaving reindeer entangled in “sexual positions.” A neighbor whose display was wrecked pursued Hayes’ truck, caught up to him, and asked, “Are you crazy?” Hayes responded, allegedly, “It’s just a bit of fun.”
THE WEIRDO-AMERICAN COMMUNITY Authorities in Valentine, Neb., have been on the lookout since November for the vandal who has approached several storefronts at night and, apparently with Vaseline smeared over his nude body, pressed himself against windows and doors. A radio station called the person “the buttcheek bandit,” although some speculate there may also be a copycat. Asked Valentine police chief Ben McBride, “Who in their right mind would do something like that?”
“We handle the details, you take the credit.”

was teenager the last time that I left the State of Hawai`i. My family and I went to Disneyland in California, which–as numerous people told me–is not actually the Mainland. That was 15 years ago. When I got a chance to fly to San Francisco for a newspaper conference, I snatched it up. Then I spent the next few months cursing myself. In my mind, there were just too many things that could go wrong in someplace so big. Now I’m back. While nothing obviously life-threatening occurred (a slight let down, actually), I did have a few interesting experiences involving drunken limo drivers, Viking hats, copious amounts of wine, stripper poles, crazy people and, of course, Holoholo Girl.

that. Where’s my damn coat?
8:35 a.m. Riding shotgun on my way to Kahului Airport, I try to clean up my mascara induced “raccoon eyes” that have resulted from my third teary meltdown of the morning. My husband–whom I suspect can’t wait to drop me off–says I’ll survive. 9:15 One of my best friends is an Agricultural Inspection officer, so I hang out in her office while I wait for my plane. We chat with her co-worker, who asks if I’m really just as crazy as I sound in my column. 2:55 p.m. I’m flying on Hawaiian Airlines, and even though I’m actively trying not to have a fullblown panic attack, I’ll admit the plane is big and comfy. Big meaning two-three-two seating. Music by John Cruz plays as people take their seats, so I shut my eyes and re-walk the path he and I took when we hung out in Makawao Town a few months ago. I’m relaxed in no time. 4:30 I had no idea that Hali‘imaile General Store’s Chef Bev Gannon is involved with the food on Hawaiian Airlines. I chose chicken in some type of lemongrass sauce with wild rice and veggies. It’s quite scrumptious. 6 Okay, I’m over it. Flying sucks donkey balls. 9:45 (All times PST now) I leave baggage claim at SFO and stand on the curb. It’s really cold. I relish in it for a while, trying to feel “mainland” air. Enough of

7 a.m. I scoot out of bed and try to forget that it’s 5 a.m. back home. My bosses Jen and Tommy Russo–whom I’m shacked up with at Hotel Kabuki in Japan Town–are getting ready for their web conference. My reporting conference doesn’t start until 2 p.m., leaving the morning for sightseeing. I’m nervous about catching the bus—the last time I did so was in the 90’s on Oahu. 7:15 Concerned that coffee does not seem to be a popular beverage in Japan Town. 8:45 Somehow I succeed in catching a bus that will (hopefully) get me to Golden Gate Park. We pass a ton of cool old buildings, but I find it strange and a little unnerving that on one block you can be in a pretty mellow looking area and the next is rundown and grubby. 9 Waiting for the next bus, I talk with a non-psychotic looking redhead who looks about my age. She tells me San Francisco is actually really small. I disagree, saying it’s positively ginormous. I can’t believe it when she says that one of her best friends went to Seabury Hall. She can’t believe it when I tell her that this is my first “grown-up” mainland trip. When I fail to properly request a stop, she bullies the driver for me. 9:15 Golden Gate Park is not a park, but a town
like Kahului. It’s a lot greener and prettier, but why did no one tell me this? 9:45 Because my mother told me to “stay off secluded walking trails unless you want to die,” I stick to the main park walkway. Parents are running with baby joggers as people walk their dogs. There are huge flower gardens, statues and gently rolling hills. Just like in the movies. 10:15 I walk to Haight Street. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it’s a little scary. I whisper, “We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto” to the imaginary Foo Dogs that I envision are protecting me from street people, buskers, bad guys, cracked out hippies and aggravated poets. Not that I’m sure that these are really the type of people that I’m currently observing on the dirty, shop lined streets, but it’s how I immediately label them in my mind. Even though I’ve made a point to keep my map tucked into my jeans, I’m pretty sure they all identify me as a clueless tourist. 10:30 I dive into the Peace Café in the Red Victorian B&B. The Red Vic was built in 1904 and looks it. According to a brochure, The Summer of Love happened here in 1967. I envision a lot of VD. I order some coffee (organic) and a peanut butter, banana and Nutella crepe. All of the tables have cards on them that say things like, “Sit here if you like to talk about world peace” or some other zany bullshit. I look for one that says, “Sit here if you don’t want to talk” but don’t find any. I give in and sit next to a girl

working on her laptop. After scraping most of the good stuff out of my huge crepe, I head to the restroom. It’s covered in graffiti. I write “Mauitime.com Rocks!” next to the tag from some person from India and walk out feeling very guilty. 11 Laptop chick asks if she can finish my crepe because she doesn’t like to see food go to waste. 5 p.m. Conference time. One female reporter praises my outfit (coat, jeans, boots). I tell her that I’m from Maui. “Oh my God!” she says. “I worked with Tony [Pignataro] at OC Weekly. Rebecca Schoenkopf. Are you Sam [Campos]?!” 5:01 I slump. 5:02 I tell Rebecca that I took Sam’s place when she moved to California and that I have my own column called “Restless Native.” But, I add, Sam is here at the conference. 5:03 After some small talk, she excuses herself. 5:04 I start drinking wine. 6:30 After three glasses, I’m hammered. What can I say? I’m a non-drinker. Anyway, I attempt to mingle. I end up talking to Advice Goddess Amy Alkon. She tells me blowjobs are critical to a happy relationship. Like I didn’t already know that. 6:45 I find Sam in the courtyard of the Unitarian Church that’s hosting the conference. We briefly chat with a couple men about proper urinal etiquette, then excuse ourselves. I tell her that her fans are hostile. She tells me that it’s actually good to see me. We laugh and get teary. I remember how beautiful she is and wonder how she always keeps her lipstick on. Bitch. 7:30 Sam and I are so deep in conversation that we don’t realize that the place has completely cleared out. Someone tells us politely that we need to leave. Immediately. 10:30 Jen, Tommy, Sam and I go to the bar Lucky 13. I stopped drinking three hours ago, but Jen–look-
ing mighty fine and rather dangerous in a Viking hat with horns–and Sam are both going strong. 10:45 Dear Lord! Is that a stripper pole on top of the bar? The group twists my arm so I scramble up onto the bar, do a couple spins and then get upside down. The crowd goes wild, even though I didn’t knock any poor guy’s teeth out.
Saturday 7:25 a.m. The alarm goes off and I tentatively crack an eyelid open. No hangover! 9:05 Jen and I arrive at the Unitarian church for our conferences. I have never walked this much, or been this cold, in my life. 1 p.m. Jen, Sam and I catch a bus to Union Square, which turns out to look like how I imagined New York. Macy’s is 10 stories tall and half as wide as the Ka‘ahumanu Center. We don’t have time to shop, so we eat our boxed lunches in the rain. 1:10 Jen feeds some birds while Sam and I cringe. Even the pigeons are giants here! 6 p.m. Exhausted, I ask if I can skip the closing ceremonies cocktail party at a club called The Element. It’s near Polk Street, which according to Sam is a great place to pick up hookers and crack. Tommy says going to the party is “mandatory.” 7 I’m glad Tommy made me go. If I played hookey I would have missed the Burlesque show. As I watch these tatted, normal-bodied women dance and strip, I realize that I may have missed my true calling. 8:30 Tommy tries and fails to hail a cab to take Jen and I to, as he put it, “see the strip clubs” (not “go

to”—just “see”). Moments later a beautiful black stretch limo pulls up, and he grins and tells us to get in. This is apparently how we roll at Maui Time. 8:31 Become convinced that our driver, an Italian named Luigi, is a homicidal maniac. He questions our sexual orientation, pervs out on Asian Listen to chicks, then starts exclaiming, “Oh my what happened God, I’m so drunk.” I become seriin the limo at ously afraid that the divider window Mauitime.com will suddenly roll up and noxious gases will start pumping into the backseat. We pass the strip clubs, but I’m too concerned about Luigi to pay much attention. If something goes down, I decide to bludgeon him with one of Jen’s stiletto heels. 9:15 Through the grace of God—or my Foo Dogs—Luigi lets us live and returns us to the hotel. Our flight home leaves first thing in the morning. When I get in bed, I close my eyes and try to visualize the millions of square miles of land and hundreds of millions of people that surround me. Right before I fall asleep, I realize that isolation isn’t about living on a tiny island surrounded by the ocean, but being just another small individual wedged in a large sea of people. MTW

Hawai‘i’s Best Sushi?
Rainbow Roll
Genki Sushi brings their conveyor belt to the Maui Mall The Japanese word “Genki” means “happy” or “doing well.” Knowing this, when I walked into Genki Sushi at the Maui Mall for lunch today I couldn’t help but wonder why their logo looks like a frowning kabuki.
Genki Sushi 70 Ka‘ahumanu Ave., Maui Mall, 873-7776. Open Su-Th, 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m.; F, Sa, 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. $

I’ve eaten a ton of sushi in my life–from the Mom and Pop maki rolls my dad and I used to get when I was a kid to the high quality, artsy Rainbow rolls from places like Isana and Sansei–but I hadn’t tried Genki until today. The place is quite large, way bigger than the now-closed Sushi-Go. It’s brightly lit and spotless. Sitting at the “bar” area, I immediately became mesmerized by plate after plate of sushi as it glided by on a long horseshoe-shaped conveyer-belt. I love the idea behind conveyor-belt sushi. In fact, I think there should be more conveyer-belt dining in general. Why don’t we have revolving pizza and wings? Anyway, I opened the sushi guide and discovered that there
were five different colored plates holding various sushi cuts and rolls. The prices climb in the order of gold, green, red, silver and black—$1.55 to $4.90. It was fun picking out different sushi, but I’m pretty sure I did it wrong. I sat on the stool and picked four different dishes in a row without stopping to eat any of them. In hindsight, I believe the correct way to eat conveyor belt sushi is to eat each dish before grabbing for another. Live and learn. I tried the Spicy Tuna (Green), Tamago and Spam (Red), California roll (Gold), Vegetable croquette (Gold) and the Corn (Gold). All were fresh, tasty and–although I know for a fact that at the cheap price, the quality of the tuna can’t be as high as some of the finer establishments–just as yummy as the fancy places. A clear advantage Genki has over most other sushi establishments is that it’s also child-friendly. Friends of mine regularly take their twoyear-old and say that the trick is to request one of the booths near the conveyor belt. Genki has great kid options like Corn sushi–rice topped with a corn and mayo mixture, then wrapped in nori. It sounds somewhat gross, but I did try it and was pleasantly surprised. The Tamago is also good for children because most enjoy their scrambled sweet egg. You can even get it with spam (my choice) and it tastes (no big surprise) like a mini spam and egg musubi. They also have a large selection of vegetarian options—conveniently labeled–on their menu like ume, avocado, kampyo, ocean salad and natto maki. Overall, Genki has a wide variety of traditional, local and mainstream sushi at fair prices in a family-friendly environment. Is it “The Best,” as the Honolulu Star-Bulletin has said for five years? Probably not, but, it could very well be my new favorite. MTW

Friday (Feb 8) 9 p.m., at Mulligans on the Blue, Wailea [MUSIC] “So, what is trip-hop?” I asked a coworker today. “It’s like trippy hip-hop, isn’t it?” Actually, it’s more like the psychedelic, groovy kind of music that makes me nostalgic for my acid-dropping days. Wait, no, I totally missed out on those days because I thought I was too mature or responsible, or some crap like that. Damn, what was I thinking? Oh well, at least I still have the People of Revolutionary Though and Living—known around these parts as P.O.R.T.A.L—who play a funky mix of electronic trip hop, jazz and rock that makes me want to dance and go back in time to do more drugs while I was young enough to get away with it. This show is a fundraiser for Source, an upcoming interactive arts and music festival that will take place in the jungly hills of Keanae in about two weeks. Also, DJ Del Sol will be there with his brand of down tempo, deep house music. I’ll be the girl outside trying to score some hallucinogens. Just kidding! $10 at the door. 874-1131 [JA]
[MUSICAL] The Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) is celebrating their golden anniversary with Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man. While I’ve never seen this production—either the play or the Robert Preston movie—I can tell you is that it’s about a small town in River City, Iowa that becomes charmed by a con-man. I can also tell you that I have never seen anything put on by MAPA that isn’t spectacular. Not to mention, the whole small town/conman thing is always an interesting topic to visit while on a tiny island like Maui. If we were to fall under the spell of a con-man, what would it be about? Would it be very different from the way things are now? Tickets: $42, $36, $24, $10. 2427469 or www.mauiarts.org.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Carnaval Time! Friday (Feb. 8), 10 p.m. at Casanova, Makawao [EVENT] Over the past week, New Orleans has been busy greasing up its poles in preparation for Mardi Gras. On Maui, we celebrate Carnaval—the “last party” before Easter in places like Brazil, Trinidad, Cuba, Haiti and the Caribbean— a little different. While we don’t have to apply Vaseline to anything that raging partygoers shimmy up and subsequently plummet down to grisly deaths, we do need to get our dancing shoes and put together a hot outfit. Dr. Nat and Rio Ritmo (Casanova’s longest regular gig) will be heating things up with smoking guitar riffs, hypnotic beats and totally stimulating vocals. Also performing will be Rosana Peixoto, a singer/performer and songwriter from Salvador, Brazil and the Grupo Luanda Capoeira. There will also be a Carnaval Dance appearance by Rosanelli Curel. I wouldn’t miss this party for all the Mardi Gras beads in the world. Tickets: $15. 572-0220 or www.drnat.com.
DAY
Shalom, Salamalekoum Sunday (Feb. 10) 3-7 p.m. at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center [CONCERT] I like reggae. As a local girl, how can I not? They say that smells trigger memory responses in people, and while this is evidently true, music does the same thing for me. There are different reggae songs that highlight and sweep me back to certain periods of my life. “Jerusalem” by Alpha Blondy not only turns me on, it makes me want to take bong rips and be really nice to people no matter of their creed, color, political party, favorite football team or bra size. This is why I am looking forward to the Alpha Blondy concert this weekend. It’s been a while since I’ve been nice. Tickets: $35 day of the show, $29 in advance. 242-7469.

Family - Say it ain’t so! After 20-something years I have finally, FINALLY gotten the Alvin and the Chpmunks theme song out of my head and now you’re saying they’re back? Nooooooo! (Plot: Chipmunk brothers Alvin, Simon and Theodore are adopted by a human named Dave.) 88 min (Starr Begley) ATONEMENT - R - Drama - In this adaptation of the novel by Ian McEwan, two upper-class British sisters form the base of a love triangle with the housekeepers son. Dramatic misconceptions lead to false accusations and betrayal, jealousy and, years later, the possibility of atonement. 123 min. THE BUCKET LIST - PG13 - Comedy - An aging auto mechanic (Morgan Freeman) and a billionaire corporate executive (Jack Nicholson) go on a skydiving, tatoo-getting, race car-driving mission to do all the things they wanted to do before kicking the bucket after a pair of heart attacks land them in a shared hospital room. 97 min. CLOVERFIELD - PG13 - Sci-Fi - Earthquakes, black-outs and massive fireballs cause chaos on the streets of New York City. Could it be another terrorist attack? No, don’t panic. It’s just a team of evil monsters from the beyond. Whew! That was a close one! 90 min. THE EYE - PG13 - Horror - Jessica Alba stars as a blind violinist who, after a double corneal transplant, regains her sight only to start seeing freaky, shadowy figures that may or may not be real. As if having a creepy surgery wasn’t horrific enough. I’m rooting for her to go totally freaking insane. 105 min. FIRST SUNDAY - PG13 - Comedy - Two bumbling thieves get up close and personal with the Almighty when an attempt to rip of their neighborhood church for thousands of dollars goes horribly wrong. 138 min. HOW SHE MOVE - PG13 - Drama - Raya’s dream of becoming a doctor is dashed when she’s torn out of prep school and tossed back into her ghetto neighborhood high school after her sister dies of an overdose. But wait! There’s an upcoming hip-hop step dance competition with a grand prize big enough to put her back on track to med school! This doesn’t sound familiar at all... 98 min I AM LEGEND - PG13 - Sci-Fi - Will Smith plays the last guy on Earth, which makes me think twice about the, “I wouldn’t screw you if you were the last guy on earth” line. Anyway, he’s (along with his trusty side-kick German Shepherd) looking for a cure to the cancer-killing virus that wiped out the planet. Oh yeah, and there’s hairless flesh eating vampires. Can’t forget about them. 100 min (SB) IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE - PG13 - Sci-Fi - Bloodthirsty beasts go postal on a small village and a peace-loving

Iím sure this kind of thing happens all the time. 91 min. (Anthony Pignataro) MAD MONEY - PG13 - Comedy - An unlikely trio of ladies (Diane Keaton, Katie Holmes and Queen Latifah) get bored with their desk jobs at the Federal Reserve and decide to make off with a huge load of cash that’s about to be destroyed. 104 min MEET THE SPARTANS - PG13 - Comedy - The 300 warriors of Spartan are no match for the 300 idiotic guys in skirts and shields and mind-numbing but funny pop culture references that pepper this satirical comedy. 84 min. MICHAEL CLAYTON - R - Drama - Michael Clayton is a slimy, burned-out lawyer and former criminal prosecutor who faces the challenge of a lifetime when a multi-million dollar lawsuit led by his firm is threatened by a guilt-ridden attorney. 120 min. ONE MISSED CALL - R - Horror - Hot college girls receive blood-curdling voice mails from their near-future selves at the moment of their death, then die three days later. These calls are punctuated by an ominous ring tone, and one unlucky young lady is racing against time to discover what the f*%! is going on. 87 min OVER HER DEAD BODY - PG13 - Comedy After the tragic death of his fiance a guy goes to a hottie psychic for help dealing with his emotions. However, he ends up falling for her (a little to soon for my tastes) and now she’s being haunted by the dead girl’s ghost, who’s bent on keeping the earthly couple apart. 105 min RAMBO - R - Action - For twenty years Rambo’s been hiding out, river fishing and generally living peacefully in back country Thailand until a sorry group of aid workers interrupt his simple life on their way to a refugee camp at the war torn border with Burma. In all that time Rambo has not aged a bit or become any easier to understand. 133 min. THERE WILL BE BLOOD - R - Drama - The dark, haunting story of a greedy Texas oil man and his exploitation of a egotistic minister who’s sitting on an enormous oil deposit. All is well as the rich man gets richer, except for that little nuisance called a conscience that wont seem to let him sleep at night. 158 min. UNTRACEABLE - R - Horror - Diane Lane plays an unlikely FBI agent in this unremarkable but still gory thriller about an underhanded serial killer who kills uninteresting people on the web. 100 min. The Fine Art of Silliness Les Trockaderos are right on pointe On Tuesday, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater curtain will rise on an enchantingly odd performance. Moments of grace and peculiar beauty will blend with what should be hilarious parody as the allmale dance troupe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo takes the stage in a froth of sweat-drenched tulle and oversized pointe shoe. A group of New York City ballet enthusiasts who dreamed of an outlet to perform amusing versions of traditional ballets in parody form—and in drag— formed the company in 1974. They debuted in the makeshift offoff-Broadway stages of Manhattan’s meatpacking district, where all 100 folding-chair seats sold out and
the audience packed the isles and sides of the theater. As the rave reviews poured in, the Trocks began to tour the U.S., Europe and Asia, finding niche audiences for their uncanny, gender-bending performances. To date they’ve performed in more than 500 cities around the world, peppering dance festivals and university campuses with peeks of chest hair and clumsy ballet tumbles while holding long seasons on major theater stages. The faux prima ballerinas, who come

In this troupe the dancers, once suitably transformed into their feminine alter egos, exaggerate their height and bulky, broad-shouldered frames for comic effect. Ruffled panties precariously conceal packages beneath frivolous tutus. When the program calls for a male role, the dancers shed their ladylike shells to reveal quirky new masculine personas. Joshua Grant, a Trockadero dancer since 2006, metamorphoses into the freakishly lovely raven-haired Katerina Bychkova as well as the statuesque and
dangerously handsome Ashley RomanoffTitwillow. Chase Johnsony, a four-year veteran of the troupe, takes the stage as both Yakatarina Verbosoviche, a Russian born and fashion obsessed ballerina with delicate features, and Roland Daulin, a French dance master who sells wigs on a television shopping channel on the side. Regardless of who or what the Trockadero dancers appear as onstage, the fact is that they are all professionally trained, incredibly talented ballet artists. Their repertoire includes scenes from classical ballets like Don Quixote, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake as well as modern works, solos de pas deux and solos de pas treis (works of two and three.) The humor comes from their expertly timed exaggeration of the foibles and fumbles of serious dance, with occasional breathtaking displays of extremely technical dexterity. With one pointed toe in genuine ballet and the other in loving parody, the Trockadero performance promises to be a compelling and comical ballet romp. MTW

DA KINECALENDAR BIG SHOWS Peaceful Sounds - Thursday, Feb 7. California singer/songwriter Blane Lyon is known for funky, soulful, conscious grooves with poignant, politically charged lyrics. He’s performing with artists Sasha Butterfly Rose and Al Torre, with opening act Diane Patterson, a peace activist and musician. Tickets: $12. 8 p.m. Mandala Ethnic Arts, Paia. 572-7100. The Webb Sisters - Thursday & Friday, Feb 7 & 8. I’m jealous of the Webb sisters. Why? Because they’re beautiful, talented and, from the looks of their pictures, tall. Oh yeah, they’ve got cool English accents, too. But then I begrudginly listened to some of their music and it’s really, really good. The lyrics are unnervingly catchy and the music is accoustic rock with a cool, piano vibe. So fine, I like them, looks and voices and skill and all. And if I can’t hate them then I want to be best friends with them. Fri, $20, 9 p.m., Casanovas, Makawao, 572-0220; Sat, 7 p.m., Tommy Bahamas, Wailea, 875-9983. Music Man - Friday, Saturday & Sunday, Feb 8 through 10. Slide back into old-timey turn-of-thecentury America with Meredith Willson’s play about a small in town Iowa. These performances are a celebration of the play’s 50 year stage anniversary. That’s a lot of show tunes! $42, $36, $24, $10. 7:30 p.m.; Sa & Su Matinee, 2 p.m. Castle Theater, MACC. 242-7469. Tango Amor 4 - Friday, Feb 8. Step into the steamy world of Argentine dance with “Love of Tango,” Tangofest Maui’s highlight dance. Master dancers Miaiam Larici, Alex Krebs, Brigitta Winkler, Michelle Lamb and Murat Erdemsel will heat up the stage with a passionate performance. Don’t forget the super sexy costumes and fiery music! Tickets: $22, $17. 7:30 p.m. McCoy Studio Theater, MACC. 242-7469. The Foreigner - Friday, Saturday & Sunday, Feb 8-10. An extremely shy guy named Charlie convinces a cast of shady characters in a backwoods Georgia fishing lodge that he doesn’t speak or understand English. Thinking he’s harmless, they spill their guts about all types of small-town gossip, closeted skeletons and sinister plans. This hilarious stage production will get you thinking about who might be hearing a little too much about your own private business. Tickets: $18. Fr & Sa: 7:30 p.m.; Su 5 p.m. Iao Theater, Wailuku. 242-6969. Source Fundraiser - Friday, Feb 8. Are you prepared for music that will blow your mind? See “TripHop” in our Picks of the Week section. $10, 9 p.m., Mulligans on the Blue, Wailea, 874-1131. Dr. Nat & Rio Ritmo - Friday, Feb 8. Party like you actually won’t be drinking during Lent. Love is in the air for Maui Onstage’s Bare Essential Theater. They will perform a reading of Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostard. This script, quite possibly the most romantic French play ever written, pits looks against personality as a woman falls in love with a hansom but charmless man who enlists the help of a big-nosed poet to romance her. Will she realize the hottie’s a dud and go for the soulful man with the less-than-perfect looks? Free. 6:30 p.m. Iao Theater, Wailuku. 244-8680 x23. Men With Grace - Tuesday, Feb 12. Dudes who dance? Ballet brothers? I can’t decide what to call this one. It’s Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, or an all male professional dance troupe that performs classical modern dance and ballet. Albeit, these shows are meant to be funny, but the all guy cast actually performs the female roles “en pointe” and “en tutu.” The troupe began as an off, off Broadway show and now tours the country and the world, spreading laughter, horror and the love of dance. Tickets: $40, $25, $10. 7:30 p.m. Castle Theater, MACC, One Cameron Way, Kahului, HI, 96732. 242-7469.

Kenny Rankin - Fri & Sat, Feb 15 & 16. This world class singer, songwriter and guitarist has had an amazing career that has spanned over 35 years, beginning as a guitarist for Bob Dylan. He’s famous for his classic songs like “You Are So Beautiful, “ “Penny Lane” and “With a Little Help From My Friends” as well as many, many more and his penchant for emotional and relateable lyrics has made him one of America’s most beloved musicians. This smooth jazz soloist and soprano sax master has been toping music charts and dominating jazz radio for over 20 years. His trademark long, luscious curls are nearly as recognizable as his emotion-packed saxophone infused jazz music and he’s just released a new album of all original music called Rhythms and Romance that I’m totally going to get my mom for her birthday. Tickets: $85, $75, $65, $55. 7:30 p.m. Castle Theater, MACC. 242-7469. Incubus - Sat, Mar 22. OK, I know it’s a little early to be saying this, but this show is probably going to be the biggest rock show on Maui in 2008. I haven’t lived here long, but I’ve been around long enough to realize that most big name bands only play Oahu venues if they make it to Hawaii at all. The guys from Incubus, however, are ending their world tour
here on Maui and then taking some quality time to chill out and surf. In case you didn’t know, some of their popular songs are “Drive,” “Megalomaniac” and, among many others, “Wish You Were Here.” Disturbing fact: Wikipedia tells me an incubus is an ancient demon that seeks up on women in their sleep and has sex with them. I don’t think this has anything to do with the band. Opening act: Siversun Pickups. Tickets: $55, $45 in advance. A & B Amphitheater, MACC. 242-7469.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Don’t look at not being included in something as being deliberately left out, or as anything personal. There are probably many other factors you may not be aware of or that you’re deliberately blinding yourself to. You can go ahead and see this as a personal slight, but you’d only be shooting yourself in the foot in the long run. Treating someone as if they’ve insulted you when they’re actually just doing their job will earn you scorn, defensiveness, and a reputation as prickly and clueless—but certainly not a place in whatever you wanted to be part of. See the big picture, chill out, and wait your turn. It’ll come.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Having the possibility of freedom looming before you can be terrifying. It’s very much like that feeling that washes over you standing on the edge of a cliff and knowing that with one choice—a whim, even— you could go tumbling off it. Choosing freedom, too, is risky. You could die. But it’s not as surely lethal as leaping into the Grand Canyon would be. Turn away from it if you must; your cage is pretty nicely gilded, after all. But at least walk up to the precipice, take a deep breath, and think about jumping off.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You want to help? Lend someone your expertise. I know that your interests have changed, and that you’d rather devote your energy to the areas you’re still a newb in, that are exciting and fresh. However, because you’re still just learning, you actually can’t be all that helpful. We need you for the stuff you’re good at right now. Revisiting your old haunts and doing shit you’ve already done a thousand times may not be all that interesting, but it would be incredibly accommodating and generous of you—and likely to inspire a little reciprocal generosity, which is never a bad thing.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Most people will eventually edit a bad first impression of someone, if they see enough evidence to the contrary, but not you Bulls. You’ll sometimes stick to that wrongful idea to the bitter end, turning a completely blind eye to proof that things are contrary to what you believe. Isn’t that what’s happening now? No? Are you sure? If you’ll admit it (a feat unto itself, I know), you haven’t taken a close look at everything that’s happened since the faux pas that made up your mind about someone. Won’t you do that now? If you do so with an open mind, yes, you’ll have to admit you were wrong. But that’s a small price to pay, considering what you’ll get in return: a great new friend.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Do you believe in ghosts? I do. Not necessarily spectral entities banging doors or slinging ectoplasm at stuff, but more like memories that have lives of their own. They influence you whether you like it or not—sometimes spurring you on, sometimes tripping you up or holding you back. Even though they live inside your head, it doesn’t seem like you can control them. You can, though. They can be exorcised, chained, or even made into allies, but probably not by you alone. You need someone to help you wrangle your ghosts. This week, look for that person and you’ll probably find him.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) There’s nothing wrong with using a calculator to figure out your bills if you suck at doing math in your head. Not bothering to do the math at all is another story—that would be bad. Recognize your weaknesses and own them. There’s no need to feel bad about them. We all suck at some things, and it’s better to identify what they are, and figure out a way to make up for them, than to not acknowledge or confront them at all. By ignoring the problem you’re exacerbating it. Go buy a calculator—or otherwise acquire the help you need to compensate for your shortcomings.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) People like you. They really like you—except when they don’t. Hopefully you’ve figured this out by now, but just in case you haven’t: There is nothing you can do to make the people who don’t like you start liking you. In fact, trying to do so is only likely to solidify their negative opinions about you. They may warm up to you eventually, but only on their own and on their own time. Trying to ingratiate yourself will only backfire, so please give it up. Enjoy the people who enjoy you and quite simply do your best to ignore the rest.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Go ahead and pine away. Spin some sugar-spun fairy tale around your longing, and pretend you’re Sleeping Beauty singing, “Someday my prince(ss) will come…” Don’t mind us sniggering behind our hands or feeling sorry for you because you’re really that dopey. Or you can go ahead and venture forth into the wilds. Dig up your own rough diamond, brave frightening monsters, and actually make shit happen. Waiting isn’t doing you any good. It’s time to kick your own ass and write your own fairy tale starring you as hero, not victim waiting to be rescued.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) If you want proof that you rock, look around you. Check out the people who love you. Their awesomeness, and the affection they bequeath upon you, should be evidence enough that you’re great. I hope you can figure out a way to be satisfied with that. If you really have to look further to find the validation and appreciation you crave, you’re going to get into trouble. In most cases, your quest will probably end in failure. Not only that, it’s likely to sabotage at least some of the good stuff you’ve already got. Look at your friends again, and feel the love. With all this, you really shouldn’t feel hungry for more. It’s a veritable feast. Dig in.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Usually you’re really good at sorting between your brilliant ideas and your abysmal ones—after the fact. Giving your inspired thinking a little time to percolate is always a good idea, especially when it’s something dramatic or potentially life-changing. I know there’s a lot of energy in the idea right now, and you’re going to want to run with it, but please resist that urge. There could be a wall up ahead, or you could end up running in the wrong direction, then have to work that much harder to make up lost ground. Keep your inspiration and temptation in check until the dust has had a little time to settle and you can be sure this is the right way for you to go. You might not run as fast, having waited, but you’ll be a lot less likely to trip and fall flat on your face.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Sell the complete package. By so strongly emphasizing only your strengths, you’re really selling yourself short. Not only do you also bring a plethora of perfectly acceptable, solid, average skills to the table(without which your most brilliant talents don’t mean as much), but by so diligently obscuring and hiding your weaknesses (which aren’t as bad as you seem to think) you’re presenting what’s obviously not a complete picture. My advice: let it all hang out. The good, the bad, the ugly. None of it is so bad nor so ugly that it will turn someone away, and by showing it all you add one more thing to your list of positive qualities: refreshing openness and honesty.

The third time may be the charm. Won’t you give this loveable loser a third chance? You might disagree philosophically with second or third chances, or resent it because of how rarely you’ve been cut a break, but sometimes it’s a good idea to bend the rules. This is one of those times, because even though there’s always a chance that she’ll strike out and fail miserably as she already has twice before, odds are that this time she’ll rise up and pleasantly surprise everyone by actually pulling off whatever stunt she’d previously crashed and burned on. Wouldn’t you like to see that? You can.
