LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR BRAGG SAYS NO SUBDIVISION! (The following is in response to Rob Parson’s Nov. 22, 2007 story “Ag Lands and the ‘M’ Word”) I am the attorney for Patricia Bragg and Living Waters Land Foundation, LLC and have worked with Patricia Bragg since 2002 in her efforts to protect and preserve agricultural lands and farming in Waiehu, Ahikuli, Hananui and Kou in the District of Wailuku. These lands consist of twenty five historic lots of record that, for the sake of convenience, were all designated as one tax map parcel number during the time that these lands were owned by Wailuku Agribusiness Co., Inc. and its predecessors in title. There is possibility that agricultural water rights may be lost or compromised if the twenty five historic lots of record lost their historic separate identity and became legally consolidated into one lot. As much of the agricultural water in this area was being diverted by plantation era irrigation systems, it was essential to ensure that the appurtenant water rights that were part of the title to some of these lots were reserved. As such, the County of Maui was requested to formally recognize the twenty five historic lots of

record as separate lots and to “undo” the plantation era informal consolidation. As part of Ms. Bragg’s purchase of these lands, there was an agreement to create a ten (10) acre organic farm in the middle of a much larger parcel and an agreement to create another 10 acre parcel for agricultural purposes in the Kou portion of the land. There was never any intention by Patricia Bragg and Living Waters Land Foundation, LLC to create any more “new” parcels than the two 10 acre farm lots that were part of the purchase agreements. Ms. Bragg expressly purchased these lands to protect and preserve them from the type of development that has been the fate of other lands formally owned by Wailuku Agribusiness Co., Inc. and to continue farming on the lands. The rumors of massive development that were published due to the request for County recognition of the 25 historic lots are not true and in direct contradiction of Ms. Bragg’s intentions and wishes. -Brian R. Jenkins, Brumbaugh & Jenkins

CORNY, BUT GOOD (The following is in response to Parson’s Feb. 14, 2008 story “Corn-ucopia”) Mahalo, Rob. Great work with your in depth look and review as to what is collectively being forced upon us compromising

our collective well being. It’s timely that Chuck Walters will be speaking at the event in that he is and has been an advocate for diverse small ecological family farms. -Vincent Mina, via Mauitime.com

STORY YOU’LL DIE FOR (The following letters are in response to Rob Parson’s Feb. 7, 2008 story “Doorway into Light”) A very real, touching and educational commentary. Thank you for raising our awareness about death and dying. -Katharine S. Ayers, via Mauitime.com Hooray another great article by former Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons, one of the first guys to stop a major development—golf course and luxury homes from being built at Sprecklesville. Although the new bulldog mayor has taken Rob from his post of watching over environmental issues on Maui, he continues to persevere doing what he can to malama‘aina through his insightful articles every week. Once the dazed and confused mayor and her lost environmental coordinator are out of the picture maybe the next mayor can beg Rob to come back to his position then we will really see some environmental coordination moving forward. -Dean Hamada, via Mauitime.com

At a recent benefit performance, the condescending disdain with which the kumu hula treated the halau shocked me. Not only was it unprofessional, but as a representation of our island’s culture, it was downright embarrassing. Ho‘okana‘oi! Hopefully, your kumu hula will see past his cloud of mirrors and realize how lucky he is to have you. It takes more than knowledge and talent to make an owl wise.

Coastal vs. Postal Writing letters to save Maui

Dear Councilmember Gladys Baisa, Just a quick note to let you know I appreciate your dedication to serving the Maui community that elected you. I see you often at public events, like the recent Sierra Club annual meeting in Spreckelsville. Your demeanor is so filled with aloha spirit that it’s little wonder you have been so successful in your previous endeavors of serving our island’s people. Thanks also for including me in your Planning Committee panel discussion on Biomass Energy and related topics. That was a wonderfully lively discussion of issues that really matter, including renewable energy and food security. I’m writing to find out if it’s true that the quote attributed to you in The Maui News regarding your “yes” vote on Wailea 670 is accurate. You said you were torn between leaving the project area undeveloped and providing housing for the “real people of Maui.” “Our children have no homes,” you said. “Our carpenters

More Money! This column occasionally pokes fun at the Maui County Liquor Commission for being a bit deaf to social justice matters popular and important to the island’s population. No matter how many people pack the commission’s hearing chamber to ask for new rules on dancing, for instance, the commissioners just shrug their shoulders and move on to the next item on their monthly agenda.

Letters I’ve written/Never meaning to send -The Moody Blues, “Nights in White Satin” I once fancied myself as a steadfast letter writer. I would take great care to keep in touch with family and friends in far away places, all via the U.S. mail. Years have passed, and postal rates continue to rise. Faxes, emails and text messages—previously enjoyed only by George Jetson and family— have supplanted handwritten letters and cards. Seemingly, everyone has less time than they once had, and the immediacy of communication often trumps that carefully crafted epistle of days gone by. Still, letters can be powerful, moving, nostalgic, or just thoughtful. There is much truth in the adage penned by 19th century author Edward Bulwer-Lytton: “The pen is mightier than the sword.” (The playwright and novelist is often lampooned for his clichéd beginning of a novel, “It was a dark and stormy night,” but that’s another story). As I sit in my office on President’s Day, a federal holiday with no U.S. Postal Service delivery, I ponder the events of recent days and weeks, and letters I’d write—if only there were time…

LC Watch

But there is one issue that has galvanized the commission. Lately it’s gotten so bad that they’ve even taken it upon themselves to get something done. Seems LC Director Franklyn Silva and Deputy Director Wayne Pagan apparently don’t make enough money. “I’ve gone to a couple [Maui County Salary Commission] meetings,” Commissioner Curt Morimoto said at the close of the Feb. 13, 2008 Liquor Commission hearing. “They’re asking courteously for input. But there’s an agenda— raises for the director and deputy director are not high on their agenda.”

Lisen to the bear, people

have no jobs.” Is that really what you believe? Because my understanding is that there is so much construction work that workers are coming from elsewhere, like the $95 million remodel of the Ritz Carlton Kapalua by Ledcor Construction, Inc. Ledcor is a huge firm with 14 satellite offices across the Mainland, one of which is in Honolulu. Alexander & Baldwin received approvals to build their Kahului Airport Hotel across from Costco back in 2002. But construction bids from six companies came in so high that the plans to build a 134-room Marriot Courtyard Hotel on that site have been stalled indefinitely. Roy Katsuda, Executive Director of Hale Mahaolu, recently told me that bids for Phase II of their senior affordable housing project in Kihei came in 80 percent higher than Phase I. Construction workers I know tell me they have been guaranteed work for years to come. So why is it that this sympathy card of no jobs gets played again and again? More to the point, why is it that council members are buying it? The 700 luxury homes Wailea 670 plans

This issue dates back at least a year. In January 2007, the Salary Commission released their list of proposed raises for county department directors and deputy directors, and lo and behold neither Silva nor Pagan made the cut. In fact, their salaries ($87,400 and $83,000, respectively) were the lowest of any county chief or deputy chief. Even the Maui County Personnel Director—as unknown as you can get on the county roster, made $2,600 a year more than Silva. But the Liquor Commission—who, at least on paper, has authority over Silva and Pagan—will stand for this no longer. In fact, Commissioner Merlyn Winters even upped the ante, quoting one Salary Commissioner whose name she couldn’t recall as saying that the reason they haven’t given Silva and Pagan raises is because they’re waiting for those two to give the rest of the department raises first. Of course, Winters hastened to add, Silva also told her that he’s spent the last five years trying to do exactly that, only to see the effort strangled by red tape. “That’s correct,” Pagan said, who was filling in for the absent Silva.

FIRE! And mighty Tesoro swings back into the top spot on news that a “small fire” broke out in a processing unit of the company’s Kalaeloa refinery on the night of Feb. 16. Though no one was injured and only a small portion of the refinery was apparently affected, the fire was enough to shut down the whole works. As the Honolulu Advertiser dryly reported online a few hours after the fire, “The plant normally is refining fuel 24 hours a day.” Now refinery officials announced Monday morning that they were “restarting operations,” according to Pacific Business News, but feel free to start panicking at any time.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Our island’s most powerful land developers drop a notch this week on news that sales of single-family homes on Maui have plummeted to a 10year low, according to the Feb. 12 Honolulu Advertiser. The drop in home sales is apparently island-wide and includes resort areas like Ka`anapali and Kapalua. In fact, the median price of a single-family home dropped to $574,113 in January, down five percent from January 2006. Granted, these numbers are for “previously owned” homes, but we need to keep in mind that the whole reason for new home construction is that the existing housing market is unable to keep up with demand. Given that sales have fallen to a 10-year low, it’s not easy to make that case. MTW

China’s historical fascination with crickets has recently been exhibited in cricket beauty contests, singing competitions and prize fights, according to a January Los Angeles Times dispatch, and has led even to increasing vigilance about crickets cheating with performance-enhancing drugs. The fighters duel in terrarium-sized containers, and, according to the Times, “Overhead cameras [project] the action onto large screens,” allowing spectators close-ups of crickets tossing each other around with their powerful jaws. The best fighters may sell for the equivalent of $10,000, are raised on vegetables and calcium supplements, and are sexually active before fights. The doping issue mostly involves the “singers;” slowing the vibration of the cricket’s wings produces an attractively lower pitch.

OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY In October, Korie Hoke filed a $1.6 million lawsuit against the Tempe, Ariz., police, claiming that it was actually an officer’s fault that she, after a New Year’s Eve bender, crashed into a cement wall and suffered serious injuries. Hoke had called police to a party, distraught that she had caught her boyfriend cheating on her, and the officer summoned her parents to pick her up. (Hoke was cited only for underage drinking, but she later tested above the blood-alcohol legal limit.) The officer, after obtaining Hoke’s assurance that she would await her parents and after searching Hoke and her car and finding no car key—Hoke had hidden it—left the scene. Hoke then drove away and crashed, and now claims it was the officer’s fault for not staying with her.

ON SECOND THOUGHT

Turnpike Authority filed a lawsuit demanding payment from the families of four people killed by an out-of-control tractor-trailer in 2006 (presumably to recoup clean-up costs and damage to the roadway). But when the New York Post asked NJTA lawyer William Ziff for a comment, he rushed to the Union County courthouse and withdrew the lawsuit.

IRONY California’s Solar Shade Control Act protects solar panels from obstructions from sunlight, and in January, Santa Clara County officials sought to enforce the law against homeowners who themselves are staunch environmentalists. Since the backyard of Prius-owners Richard Treanor and Carolynn Bissett contains lush redwood trees that block their neighbor’s panels, the county ordered that the trees be cut down.

Once again, it looks like we’re going to get through a presidential campaign without talking about the small fact that we’re at war. In Iraq and Afghanistan. Nobody’s really been talking about the wars—certainly not our presidential candidates—but they’re still going on. Yes, casualties are down, but not completely out: today’s Honolulu StarBulletin has a grim story about a roadside bomb in Taji, Iraq that killed four soldiers from the 25th Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks. The troops were on patrol north of Baghdad when the buried bomb blew apart their Stryker vehicle.

Today the big Honolulu dailies are running obits on Robert C. Oshiro, campaign manager for three successive Democratic governors, who died two days ago at the age of 83. Former Governor John Waihe`e called him “the example of the ideal warrior” in the Advertiser; in the StarBulletin, state Senator Robert Bunda (D, Wahiawa) said Oshiro’s “forte was knowing the pulse of the community, and his knowledge of the numbers, where to press the buttons of various political groups.” There’s no question that Oshiro was a giant in the state Democratic Party for 30 years, but as is usually the case when one of these giants dies, the papers actually end up low-balling his influence. Oshiro was one of those guys—like the late Masaru “Pundy”Yokouichi—who exerted so much influence over land-use decisions that they actually shaped the way Hawai‘i looks today. A Campbell Estate master in 1963, Oshiro spent much of that decade in the state House of Representatives. But he left in 1970 to run gubernatorial campaigns—John Burns, George Ariyoshi and Waihee—as well as pursue a living as a private attorney for clients like Castle & Cooke and Amfac. In 1974, while in the midst of Ariyoshi’s first run for governor, Oshiro represented Castle & Cooke’s Lanai Co. before the state Land Use Commission (LUC)—even securing, on at least one occasion, a private meeting with one of the commissioners. “[Oshiro] was at that time one of the most politically influential people in Hawaii outside of government,” George Cooper and Gavan Daws wrote in their 1985 book Land and Power in Hawaii. “The fact that people like Oshiro were involved in applications was a reason why the LUC was now tolerable to Burns-Ariyoshi Democrats.”

It’s Chelsea! ed for final approval. This has been many years in the making—though dating back 20 years, the project’s most recent design goes back five years. It’s massive, controversial and any success it ultimately enjoys is due to Jencks’ intense lobbying. And he knows how big development gets done: for many years, Jencks worked as the county’s Public Works Director. But hey—if past generations jumped back and forth between public service and far more lucrative land development, why shouldn’t Jencks?

SUNDAY, Feb. 17 Hillary Clinton is going to contest Hawai‘i in the race to the Democratic Party candidate for president! That means Chelsea Clinton is coming to Maui! Today! To appear at a Democratic Party rally at… the tiny David K. Trask Building in Wailuku? Headquarters of the county Department of Liquor Control? Now this makes sense if you figure that a few hundred people packed into a small space like the Trask Building looks impressive on TV, but the same number spread out in the vastness of, say, War Memorial Stadium would look like no one cares about Clinton. Also, that former Mayor James “Kimo” Apana did the advance work on this one. Anyway, at least a couple hundred people crammed into the building’s courtyard, eating chili dogs and donuts while braving mosquitoes, humidity and local politicians

But recently she’s started stumping for her mom—I said “stumping,” not “pimping”—on the campaign trail. I suppose there are worse places to smile at cheering party activists than Maui, and Clinton—a red, white and blue orchid behind her left ear and clad in a black dress and at least half a dozen leis—made a good show of it. The rally lasted nearly an hour, though Clinton spoke a mere two minutes, at most, saying little more than some variation of the phrase “please vote for my mom” (though the words “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you with my hula efforts” were pretty cool—making the malahini dance the hula is always a crowd-pleaser). Given the fact that Apana, state Senator Colleen Hanabusa, state Senator Roz Baker all spoke for considerably longer than two minutes, while Clinton had to stand on the stage and try her best to look interested, her brevity was completely understandable.

MONDAY, Feb. 18 How long has it been since investigative reporter Eric Schlosser wrote his best-selling expose Fast Food Nation? Six, seven years? How long have the American people known the ugly truth about how factory farms and slaughterhouses really operate? So why did I read in this morning’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin a story titled “Government orders recall of 143M pounds of beef?” After nearly two complete presidential terms of George W. Bush, does this nation still have a Food and Drug Administration? Will it ever be possible for regulators to make sure that bad/tainted/mistreated meat never enters the marketplace in the first place, making recalls like the one in the Star-Bulletin—apparently the biggest ever—completely unnecessary? Apparently, at least part of this beef, which came from a Westland/Hallmark Meat Packing Co. slaughterhouse accused of “animal cruelty and violation of food safety rules,” was destined for our schoolchildren. Oh yeah, we truly do live in the richest, most powerful nation on earth.

TUESDAY, Feb. 19 And it’s Hawai`i Democratic Party Caucus time! At press-time, officials said 37,182 people participated, which is not only more than seven times the number of votes from 2004, but is three times what the party expected. That Barack Obama blew away Clinton 76 percent to 24 percent isn’t really a surprise, so we shouldn’t come down too hard on poor little Chelsea Clinton. I’m sure she tried her best. ROBREPORT

Dear Ted Liu, Mahalo for your many years of service to Hawai‘i through your work and guidance with the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. As someone who spent a four-year stint as a county employee, I can sympathize with the rigors of working within a bureaucratic structure as well as in the political arena. Thanks also for your recent Viewpoint contribution to The Maui News, “Innovative thinking a must for energy independence.” What I liked about it the most is that it could have easily been fluff and PR, but that you actually touched on some pivotal issues for our energy future. Like you, I see a bright economic future for utilizing our locally abundant renewable energy sources. The announced support of the U.S. Department of Energy in signing an initiative with Governor Linda Lingle to raise our capability of using nonimported energy sources to 70 percent by 2030 is laudable, even if the mechanisms on how to get there are fuzzy. That is to say, unless there are real shifts in the “power structure” (pun intended), I’m not confident that the outcome will represent fairness and equanimity to the people of Hawai‘i. Corporate and political powers have an uncanny way of blurring our vision for the future. I cringed when I read that UPC/Kaheawa Wind Farms had to file a complaint with the Public Utilities Commission to bring attention to the brick wall they ran into with Maui Electric Company (MECO), trying to get them to accept more clean, local energy. MECO claimed they have reliability issues, due to the variations in output, even though UPC hopes to overcome that

Dear Mayor Charmaine Tavares, I had the opportunity to attend the Maui Coastal Land Trust’s seventh annual “Buy Back the Beach” luau on Feb. 16 in Lahaina. Thank you for being there, and for supporting this worthy cause. I must say, I was somewhat shocked by your introductory comments. You told the audience of developers, conservationists, locals and visitors, “Don’t believe everything you read in the Letters page of the newspaper. Those people aren’t the real people of Maui.” Forgive my expressing this in a letter, but I believe constructive criticism of elected officials is a constitutionally protected right. Hearing you try to deflect the fallout over transient vacation rentals and other issues at an event such as this strikes me as being way off topic. This was an evening for celebrating the successes, in a short seven years, of a truly collaborative effort to preserve precious coastal lands and easements throughout Maui County. The evening was about preserving conservation resources for the future, not defending a political decision to shut down a viable economic sector in our community. The bright spot was that even development factions see the wisdom in preserving our beachfronts and coastal properties. For example, Wailea 670 representative Charlie Jencks had the winning bid on an auction item. Anyhow, I just wanted to share my mana‘o with you and hope you will be more willing to accept, and not insulate yourself from public input in your next three years of serving our community. Mahalo, malama pono, ROB MTW

to build around a private golf course could easily command $1-3 million each, making this approval worth somewhere upwards of a $2 billion project. The 700 “affordable” units are either poorly located rentals or out of reach for most of the local families you hope to accommodate. I could go on about why I think this approval is ill conceived, as many, many testifiers have done over the past several years. I’m not picking on you, Gladys, as I really do like and admire you. I realize that your vote wasn’t exactly pivotal, as there still would have been five votes to pass first reading. I just had hoped for better decisions from you, and wanted you to know. with battery storage. Your published comments indicate that rather than taking a stance of choosing the Shell Wind project in Ulupalakua over UPC expansion at the Kaheawa site, “MECO should utilize as much renewable energy instead of imported oil as possible. It should take more wind projects. Instead of focusing on reliability to the exclusion of other important issues, MECO should vigorously pursue engineering and technical solutions to make renewable energy sources as reliable as possible.” Thanks for saying that, Ted. It’s not often a government official has the guts to tell our public utilities what to do. I have no big issue with MECO, as I believe the people there are good folks, but beholden to larger decisions made by their parent company, Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO). If we are to be successful in attaining our self-sufficiency goals, your leadership and willingness to call out our “power brokers” on their poor, “business as usual,” choices will be crucial. That’s from Robert Frost’s “Mending Wall.” It’s also apparently the philosophy of Puamana, a fortified development in Lahaina and home to two great surf spots. In 2000, gates went up surrounding Puamana. Ever since, they’ve come to symbolize the intensifying battle between developers and surfers over access to the surf. “Their gate took the Hawai‘i out of my home,” a former Puamana resident told me. “All my kids surf and it seemed like the security guards were targeting surfers. I didn’t move there to live behind a gate. I would sit there in disbelief as the security guards treated the surfers like criminals. For what? Walking on the grass to get to the beach? The gate was for security purposes but I think it made the place more of a target.” I wait outside the gate and just beyond the scope of a security camera. Finally, a Mustang pulls up, punches the secret code into the keypad, then continues into the neighborhood. This is how they treat tourists—instead of a lei or an “Aloha,” it’s “No Trespassing.” I slip into Puamana just as the gates close. I feel like James Bond, but instead of a tuxedo and Walther PPK I carry a black rashguard and a pocket full of Sex Wax. Almost immediately, the six-two thruster I’m carrying blows my cover. I sprint over the manicured lawn and past rows of townhouses that show no deviation from one another. I see a massive clubhouse next to a pool deck. Sunburned honeymooners hold hands in chaise lounges while Lanai smiles in the background. Playful golden peaks meander towards the reef and explode in both directions; there’s not a drop of water out of place. There’s nothing out of place here, except myself. The 28 acres are lush and beautiful. I wish I were

Then a golf cart pulls up beside me. “Get off the grass,” the guard says. “You can’t walk through here.” I know from experience that not all of the guards are authority junkies. Some are actually chill. “Where are your golf clubs?” I ask the guard, trying for a lighthearted laugh. He throws me the same look I get from TSA

upposedly, access to the ocean is a right in the State of Hawai‘i. In October 2006, the Hawai‘i Supreme Court issued a ruling stating that, “The public has a right of access to and along all beaches and shorelines in the State situated below the ‘upper reaches of the wash of the waves.’” But what if a surf spot sits off a pile of boulders and people can’t get to it from the shoreline? Unfortunately, the public does not have the right to use the land adjacent to the ocean, even if it overlooks a world-class wave. Is this really protecting access? To find out, I asked Deborah Ward, spokesperson for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. “Unfortunately, since we are a state agency, there is not much we can do,” Ward said. “Beach access is a growing problem in Hawai‘i and we are very concerned about it. However, it is the county’s responsibility to establish the right of way and concerned citizens are advised to contact their county officials.” Ah, the county. Again, the 2006 Hawai‘i Supreme Court ruling: “Generally, the Counties have the primary authority and duty to develop and maintain public access to and along the shorelines.” And herein lays the problem: Maui County is not fulfilling their duty to develop, maintain, and protect public access. This problem is most pronounced in West Maui, where a lot of coastal land is privately owned. And since many of these privately owned lands have contributed to dangerously high erosion rates, beaches to access surf have become almost non-

It’s an ironic move considering the shaka supposedly originated from a security guard—a hired hand (minus three fingers)—named Hamana Kalili, who kept Oahu’s youth from jumping trains. Young

existent. This leaves surfers with three choices if they want to get to spots that lack shoreline access: jump off a boat, paddle a ridiculously long way from a poorly placed public access site or break the law and trespass. “For as long as I can recall, we have had beach access as an issue on the council,” Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson said. “One particular problem spot for surfers is the Puamana development. A public beach access, which I never have been able to pinpoint, was at Puamana and was an access that apparently was on an old map, but at some point was closed off to the public.” Puamana PUD (Private Urban Development) is currently listed on the

Maui County 2005 Shoreline Access Report’s inventory of public shoreline access points. The only problem is that surfers somehow have to pass through locked gates and harassment from security personnel before making it into the lineup. Meanwhile, land development continues. From Honua Kai to Kapalua Bay, an abundance of new construction is threatening public beach access.

didn’t return a call for comment. aui County’s shoreline access laws are as shifting as the grains of sand between tides. But Johnson hopes the County will bring some solid ground to the issue. “We are supposed to address the issues of beach access during the upcoming discussion of our General Plan so I am hoping that at some point the Planning Department provides us with the information to know what is legally required and where our old access points were and what the proposed access or current access points are,” Johnson said. My Dinner with Ruth Or, how I came to eat escargot at Ruth’s Chris Steak House

Five courses, five wines, one theme. That’s the idea behind a new series of prix-fixe group dinners that take place on the first Friday of each month at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Lahaina. Earlier this month my guy Dave and I joyously sat down to a meal that included wines from five different regions of France and a special, French-themed menu.

So on the night of Friday, Feb. 1, Dave and I sat down at a large square table set for 20 in the restaurant’s private dining area. A centerpiece arrangement of oversized wine and champagne bottles, accompanied by multiple wine glasses, goblets and champagne flutes at each place, implied that the wine would be flowing all evening. Our mouths watered in anticipation. Moments after I settled in to my corner seat, Assistant General Manager Steve Seno filled my flute to the brim with Taittinger Brut La Francaise. I sipped the dry bubbly and made nice with my neighbors—a chatty, older couple on vacation—while we waited for a few late arrivals. This took about half an hour, but the champagne glasses remained full, so we didn’t mind. Our first course, announced by executive chef Matthew Paet, arrived not long after everyone got seated. My personal moment of truth came when I discovered that for the first time, I would savor the slimiest of French delicacies. Our escargot arrived en cruet—wrapped in a buttery, flakey pastry shell atop a delicate mushroom duxelle. It was a gentle and cheesy initiation into the salty, slightly chewy world of eating snails. We moved on to much more familiar cuisine for the second course. After a healthy round of the perfectly crisp Domaine La Roche chablis went into every glass, we dug into tender ahi and hamachi tartar, layered with chopped hard-boiled egg. A side of baby greens with lemon basil

vinaigrette and a few salty capers complimented the interesting fusion of flavors. It was amazing and I practically licked my plate clean. The next course was cassoulet, a very traditional dish from southwestern France, complimented by the light and fruity blend of varietals in Chateau Mont Redon’s Chateauneuf-du-Pape, from France’s Rhone region. The dish had creamy white beans and trio of meats: smoky andouille sausage, tender chunks of duck and sliced beef fillet, served medium rare. The dish was rich and delicious, with just the right salty balance of flavors. Next, in true French style, they served us a spoonful of refreshing sorbet to cleanse the pallet. It was a sweet blend of mango and lilikoi, giving us a welcome respite between the heaviest courses. We sat back and sipped our wine, watching groups of people around the table laughing and getting to know each other. Then came the filet mignon. The juicy medallion sat upon a creamy potato puree and a balsamic and raspberry reduction with a compliment of ratatouille. The crowning glory on the steak was a thin slice of foie gras. The deep, complex Grand Cru Saint Emilion bordeaux from Chateau Lassegue stood up well to the full flavors of this course. All too soon the final wine of the evening arrived: Chateau Fargues sauternes, an amazing, syrupy sweet variety. Dessert followed; after a moment’s disappointment that our final course was not decadent French chocolate, I happily dug in to a savory cheese souffle. The soft and puffy breaded top gave way to a creamy cheese mixture that perfectly offset the sugary sweetness of the dessert wine. And then, nearly three hours after first sitting down, it was over—at least until March 7, the next time Ruth’s Chris will host the dinner. The food and wine selections change each month, and the whole evening costs $80 a person (reservations required). It’s quite a deal, considering the amount of rich food and wine served throughout the evening. MTW

Heart Shrine Relic Tour Friday-Sunday, (Feb. 22-24) at the Laulima Building, Maui Community College [EXHIBIT] There are certain things that happen once in a lifetime and then there are things even more rare than that. The Heart Shrine Relic Tour is one of those things that just shouldn’t be missed–for many reasons–but most practically because if you skip out on it now, you may never, ever, never be able to experience it again. Not just that, but you’d be passing up on an exhibit that a very small percentage of the Earth’s current and future inhabitants will ever get the chance to see. Intrigued? Of course you are. The Heart Shrine Relic Tour is an international exhibit of ancient and sacred Buddhist relics that is coming to Maui for the first (and last!) time. These relics are believed to be pearly, crystal-like “beads” that are left after the cremation process. Some of these relics apparently date back 2,500 years to the time of Guatama, Buddha. When the tour is over, the relics will be enshrined into a 500-foot bronze Buddha that is currently being constructed, that will stand for 1,000 years in India. Free. Opening ceremony Friday, 7-9 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday 10 a.m.-7 p.m., 579-8076. [STARR BEGLEY]

What Tuva Sounds Like

The Source

Thursday (Feb. 21) 7:30 p.m., McCoy Studio Theater, MACC

Friday, Saturday & Sunday (Feb. 22-24) at the YMCA Camp in Keanae

[MUSIC] The four men of Huun Huur Tu are masters of the art of overtone singing. Also known as throat singing, this extraordinary form of music involves making two distinct pitches–a lower, droning note under a higher pitched sound–simultaneously and requires an insane amount of control over the breath and vocal chords. In fact, unless you’re from Tuva (which is a small, nomadic mountain country of Turick peeps way up North by Mongolia) or from somewhere in the surrounding Russian/Asian area, it’s nearly impossible to acquire this incredible vocal skill. It comes with the territory, like an expression of the natural sounds of the landscape and animals from that particular region, so the show’s sort of an audio tour. Which is cool, because odds are I’m not going to Tuva any time soon. Tickets: $25. 242-7469 [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

[MUSIC/ARTS] It’s not like you really need a good reason to take a weekend off to visit the jungle hills of Keanae, but I’m going to give you one–an interactive arts, music, healing and educational festival. The focus is on creating community, celebrating the feminine and water as a life force that sustains us, but basically there’s going to be a lot of really fun stuff like food, friend-making, laughing, dancing, still art, sculpture, body paint, projection art and mural painting, yoga, massage, acupuncture, seminars on astrology and astronomy, fire performances and much more. There’s also going to be three ancient Polynesian Ho‘ano ceremonies. And there will be opportunities for all to contribute through music, art, discussion or some unique way. If fact, active participation is fundamental to this festival, so come prepared to become a part of The Source. Two delicious, organic and vegan meals will be provided each morning and evening with snacks throughout the day. Bunk beds or camp space provided. Tickets: $150 for the weekend, $60 per day, available at Supernatural in Makawao or at www.sourcemaui.com. [JA]

Luck of the Irish

Seriously Steep

Saturday, (Feb. 23) 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center

Sunday (Feb. 24) 3, 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC

[MUSIC] In 1996, the Irish band Altan signed with Virgin Records, making them the first band of their kind to hook up with a major label. Long before then, they have been hailed as one of the best Irish bands ever and listeners have been told that theirs is a concert “not to be missed.” Well, they’re coming to Maui and bringing their “dazzling instrumental prowess” and “gorgeous delicate vocals” with them. They’ve performed their award-winning music from Donegal to Tokyo, to Seattle and beyond and are famous for a great balance of old Irish ballads to foot stomping jigs. Tickets: $35, $25, $10. 2427469. www.altan.ie for more details.

[FILM] It’s all about the thrill, the rush of adrenaline and intense mental clarity that comes along with the danger of risking your life. At least, that’s what fearless extreme skiers like to say in Steep, a film about riding the world’s biggest snowy mountain peaks, the search for perfect powder and the history of extreme skiing. Personally, I think they’re crazy, but it’s still fun to watch them base-jump down practically vertical hills and heli-ski onto mountain slopes that no sane person would ever attempt to ride. It’s directed by Mark Obenhaus and narrated by Peter Krause, with a high-energy soundtrack and several interviews with Doug Coombs, a champion skier who died two years ago in extreme skiing accident. Tickets: $12. 242-7469. [JA]

Assassination Anxiety The political thriller returns with a vengeance Director Pete Travis (Omagh) has turned debut screenwriter Barry Levy’s Rashomon-inspired script, about an assassination attempt against a U.S. president on a visit to Salamanca into a dizzyingly complex puzzle that sits comfortably next to such great political thrillers as the 1992 film In the Line of Fire.

Vantage Point

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/90 min.

The ever-impressive Dennis Quaid raises his leading man status as Thomas Barnes, a Secret Service agent returning to duty for the first time since taking a bullet for President Ashton (William Hurt) a year earlier. There’s more than a little relevance in the story’s Spanish setting where the President has arrived for a summit on the global war on terror. At noon, rifle shots penetrate the President’s chest as he takes the podium in a public square where an American news team captures the shocking scene. Seconds later, a bomb blast reduces the area to bodies and rubble. The clock returns to noon at

10-minute intervals that allow us to see, in chunks, the circumstances from the various viewpoints of a suspect, an American tourist, a terrorist, and the President before splitting off into an energized climax that links the pieces together with fast twitch precision. We’re introduced to the characters’ varying intensities in the context of the two sudden eruptions of violence. The President goes down, Barnes sees a man run on stage and stops him with football tackle that flattens the suspect. Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker), an American tourist, searches the scene with a video camGuy #1: “Dude, Run!” Guy #2 “Wait! VANTAGE POINT - PG13 - Action - President Ashton gets himself assassinated overseas, which is all well and good except that a huge crowd, including international media, is watching. the last guy on Earth, which makes me think twice about the, “I wouldn’t screw you if you were the last guy on earth” line. Anyway, he’s (along with his trusty side-kick German Shepherd) looking for a cure to the cancer-killing virus that wiped out the planet. Oh yeah, and there’s hairless flesh eating vampires. FOOL’S GOLD - PG13 - Comedy - Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson team up again in this unfunny movie about a divorced couple who go on the hunt for buried treasure. At least there’s going to be plenty of topless McConaughey to watch. 90 min HOW SHE MOVE - PG13 - Drama - Raya’s dream of becoming a doctor is dashed when she’s torn out of prep school and tossed back into her ghetto neighborhood high school after her sister dies of an overdose. Trendsetters Maui artists are the first in the state to join forces and give plastic bags the boot from Paia “Paper or Plastic?” will not be an option at any checkout line in Paia come April. For three months, the town and all 93 merchants will be plastic bag-less. Merchants will provide “Bio Bags,” made from 100 percent GMO-free cornstarch and offer reusable bags for sale. Local resident Heather Riley pushed the effort, making Paia the first town in the state to go completely plastic bag-free. Riley estimates that during the trial period, Paia will not release about 117,000 nonbiodegradeable bags that could end up on roads, parks and in the ocean. “It could take more than a thousand years for a plastic bag to go away,” Riley said. She believes it’s best to use your own reusable bag when shopping. Lacking that, there’s the “Bio Bag,” which breaks down in just 45 days when put into compost. To ensure that Paia remains bagless for at least the three-month trial, Riley teamed up with many of Maui’s artists (and local celebrities like Woody Harrelson and Jack Johnson) who used reusable bags as canvases. They’ll auction off the works to raise at least $10,000, which will be put toward purchasing both reusable and Bio Bags. At press time, Riley has raised 30 percent of her goal. The auction lasts until Feb. 23, and you

can see many of the bags on display at various galleries throughout Paia Town. Here’s what a few of the artists had to say about the movement and their work: Lori Koprowski I participated because I thought it was a great way to create awareness–the simple thought that you can do a lot for the environment by just remembering your own bag when you go shopping. My influence in my artwork is the female form, so I painted a figure somewhat enjoying the great outdoors, butterflies and bag-free. I have a two and a half year-old and a five and a half month-old and we’ve gone through this project together, making me and them more aware of the future. Keeping our parks and beaches clean by picking up a bag when we see one on the ground and using our own whenever we can. Robena When Heather approached me with the idea, I thought it was a great way to bring attention to the problem we have with waste. By becoming aware we can help eliminate this small part of our overall footprint. You don’t really need

them [plastic bags] and the convenience has consequences. Our impact on the ocean and the land is great enough. I was honored to have the opportunity to be reminded and retrained about the choices we make on a daily basis. If we can do it in Paia, I’m sure it can be done island-wide. Ray Masters I painted one of my favorite subjects: cats. I wanted to paint something that might be in the bag and then I thought, what about a “cat out of the bag?” Thus the subject. As to style, I have been painting in a much looser way lately. I have been inspired by the controlled chaos of Jackson Pollock’s work, so I used a similar technique of splashes and dribbles to create the piece. Tim Garcia Painting one of the bags for the auction was a no-brainer. Any help I could give and being able to participate was an honor. We have alternatives [to plastic] and we have choices that do not damage the environment. To sit on our hands and do nothing about the damage we do is not acceptable to me. We as a community need to get back to

looking and caring for each other and also look at what we do in our daily lives and how what we do, and choices we make effect our islands and our planet. Lori Higgins At first, I just couldn’t find the time to actually paint something because I’m under a lot of pressure and can take months to complete a piece. But I am seriously concerned about Hawai‘i’s environment as I’ve found my home here, so I decided this fundraiser was far more important than anything else. Janet Davis The image I used on my bag was the Earth Mother. It’s an image I have been working with a lot lately. Ecologically, I have always thought she needed a face and a voice and so when this image came through, I thought, this says it all. Pay attention; be mindful. We can’t be unconscious anymore. We have to give back to our planet and help to restore the delicate balance that is our beautiful world. For more information on the going plastic-free, the auction and the artists, or to place a bid before Feb. 23, visit www.nomoplasticbag.com. MTW

Painkillers and Alternatives The Sunset Sessions Kika Kane [CD] It’s difficult to describe the music that comes from Kika Kane’s “slack-key”tuned guitar. It’s mellow, but not soft. It’s classic without sounding tired, and it’s Local without sounding super Hawaiian. His instrumental tracks make you want to pop in ear buds and lay out on the beach on a warm, breezy day. It came as no surprise that Kane wrote most of the tracks on Sunset Sessions in the afternoon while lounging on the sand after surfing. They all have a soothing, satisfied sound. Besides being a great album to chill to, it also works great for massage or meditating. The local vibe and Maui feel is a great alternative to all the New Age-y walking in the forest stuff that’s out there. www.KikaKane, MySpace.com/KikaKane

Vaughn’s One-Page Summaries [WEBSITE] Vaughn’s One Page Summaries is a treasure of useful information. On this site, which is regularly updated, you will find details on animal cross-species, the top movies of all time, golf club comparisons, main constellations to view by month, star magnitudes, diamond grading charts, EMF detectors, diet pills and–my personal fave–a handy prescription painkiller comparison chart. It lists all of the over-the-counter and prescription painkillers, what they are best for, any risks involved and then rates them on a score of one to 10 on how they alleviate back pain. No shock that plain old aspirin rates just a one, but I was surprised that Demerol, which I’ve had a few times after surgery, came in at only a four with 800 mgs of Motrin ranking close with a 3.5. I feel a headache coming on. www.vaughns-1-pagers.com

The Blue Day Book: A Lesson in Cheering Yourself Up By Bradley Trevor Grieve [BOOK] I first came across The Blue Day Book after a lousy breakup and it’s now one of those books I often turn to for advice. It always gives me a good laugh when the day/week/year feels like a trip to the dentist. The book is short, just 93 pages. Each page has a black and white photo of an expressive animal–polar bears, bulldogs, hippos, mice, turtles, frogs, pigs, penguins and chameleons. You get the picture–as well as a short encouraging editorial. It sounds fruity, but it’s actually funny as hell. “Live every day as if it were your last, because one day it will be,” states one page that displays a photo of an adorable baby lion about to be crushed to death by a gargantuan elephant foot. Another: “On blue days you can become paranoid that everyone is out to get you. (This is not always such a bad thing.)” That’s next to a picture of a large longbeaked bird attempting to swallow a live guinea pig. They also make this book for kids, but I’m sure they leave out the potentially disturbing images like a pig humping the sheep, but it’s probably just as good. MTW

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Allow yourself to fall in love with humanity. Make our flaws and foibles as likely to elicit giddy stomach butterflies as our more noble virtues. It should be easy for you, because compassion is second nature to you Fish. Sanguine acceptance of all that we are, as a race, is going to help you through the iffy situations you’re likely to encounter this week. People can’t help their many imperfections, and these will all be on unignorable display this week. Forgive people their defects. It’s the key to staying sane and, if not giddily happy, then at least not miserable.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your first reaction when stung by a bee will probably be to hunt down the insect and kill it, even if you know it’ll probably die soon anyway, on its own. (Many kinds of bees lose their stingers when they use them, and perish.) I don’t blame you, and certainly understand the impulse, but I beg you to control it, nevertheless. Expending your energies on needless vengeance would be such a poor choice, considering everything you’ve got on your plate at the moment. How fast can you forgive and forget, actually? This week, find out.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Call and place your classified ad today!

264-8039 283-3260

This week is like that freak snowstorm that hits long after you thought winter was over. Suddenly you’re snowed in, and all your winter clothes are already packed away in boxes. Okay, so you find yourself unprepared and a little overwhelmed. The good news is, what you have to do is about as clear as it could be, albeit a huge hassle. There’s nothing for it but to get right to work. It is what it is. There’s no lesson to be learned here except that the best-laid plans often go awry. You can’t consistently predict the future, so you might as well be flexible and deal with what happens, rather than what ought to happen. Stop bitching and get on with it.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) When in doubt this week, go old school. You Twins pride yourselves on being forward-thinking but there are certain situations which your great-grandparents could handle more ably than you can. Think of them (or hypothetical versions of them) when you encounter circumstances that have you at a loss this week. Some old-fashioned courtship, a handwritten letter, or an application of the best of old-world values could go a long way towards sealing a deal or making people happy.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Send an anonymous letter to someone you appreciate. Leave surprise, untraceable gifts for those you love. Your job this week is to spread the love as much as you can, without anyone guessing that it’s you. Why the anonymity? Because you don’t want anyone accusing you of vested motives, or for your gifts to be tainted by people’s own internal baggage. Also, adding a pleasant mystery to someone’s life is almost always a good thing. Lastly, in order to avoid “suspicion,” you’d better give yourself a gift as well, one just as nice as the others.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Negativity breeds negativity. There are a number of obstacles between you and your objectives, but don’t hate them. They are what they are, and pouring spite upon them will only drag you down, and have virtually no effect on them. Be positive and radiant and benevolent—the best aspects of your sign. Ultimately, don’t wish them ill when you can wish them well instead. Heap so many blessings upon your adversaries and opponents that they can’t be bothered with blocking your way anymore. It might not satisfy your mean streak, but it’ll get you where you want to go. Since nothing else will, what have you got to lose?

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Halfway won’t cut it this week. The advice you’ve received and are contemplating following is good advice—if you heed it to the letter and follow through to its logical conclusion. You can’t break this wisdom down into manageable chunks. It’s all or nothing. Only partially pursuing this course of action would be utterly disastrous. Make sure, before you start on this path, that you’ll be able to stay unflinchingly on it to the very end, no matter what happens, or you could wind up making things quite a good deal worse than they are already.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) The reason you still haven’t found what you’re looking for is because that keeps changing. By the time you get what you wanted, your desires have moved on, so that you just don’t really want it anymore. Shit happens. But please stop thinking of yourself as unlucky so much as a victim of your own dynamic desires. If you could just keep wanting something long enough, you would get it. Now, what’s it going to be? Will you choose a goal and stick to it until you get it? Or will you accept your dynamic agenda as part of who you are, and that perhaps the journey to your ever-changing destinations is better than ever getting there (which you probably won’t)?

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) How lucky are you, to be surrounded by such extraordinary people? I hope you’re inspired by their examples, by the choices they make and the paths they pursue. If this is the case, make sure they feel appreciated this week. If it’s not, ask yourself why. Is it because you yourself haven’t been making brave, inspiring, decisions? Or because you haven’t challenged yourself to get out there and find the people who’ll ultimately help you fulfill your full potential? This is a good week to diagnose whatever’s wrong with your social life—if anything—and take the first steps towards fixing it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Where, exactly, were those boundaries? Just as I thought: you’ve lost track. It’s all well and good to fuzz the lines drawn between you and other people, but when you lose sight of them altogether things can get very messy. That’s very likely this week. You don’t want to overstep your welcome, or provide anyone with more information than they ever cared to know. This week, take a step back and pragmatically and objectively evaluate where those boundaries probably are, even given all that’s happened so far. Draw them in again, at least in your own mind. It’s the only way to avoid the fearsome trouble that’s likely to ensue if you don’t.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) In general, you’re an extremely patient person. But even your remarkable tolerance can be tested when you don’t get what you probably deserve. Here you’ve been very serenely waiting your turn, and when it finally comes no one seems to notice. That would irk anyone. Don’t, however, throw a tantrum, though one may be lurking just beneath your skin. A hissy fit right now would get you attention, but not the kind you want or deserve. Worse, it would preclude you from receiving the accolades and recognition that are, admittedly, late, but still on their way.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Remember that slightly cruel childhood game, Monkey in the Middle? You may feel you’re engaged in a more subtle, adult version of that this week, as what you want gets tossed over your head repeatedly, just out of reach. It’s all supposed to be good fun, but in reality it’s not, so much. Don’t make the mistake of trying to jump up and catch it; you never will. Instead do what you have to do to end the game once and for all—most likely that will involve taking out one of the other players, or—better yet—getting him on to your side. Then, next time you’re in control, be aware of the kinds of games you play; make sure you’re not putting anyone else in the kind of situation you just got out of.

Posers who Vote

Mind Body

Mind Body Spirit A G U I D E F O R H E A LT H Y L I V I N G

I’m going to vote this year. In fact, I haven’t been this excited about an election since I was a preteen and Linda Lingle ran for mayor and promised to build us a skate park if she won. That year, my grommet friends and me shacked up in my parent’s bedroom and watched the coverage on a local news channel. We all let out a “whoop” when the votes came in favor of Lingle–skate park here we come! And we got our skate park. Of course, by the time it was completed, I had already taken a major hang off the half-pipe in my backyard and forever swore off skateboarding for slightly safer things like boys who skateboard. I believe it’s acceptable for a kid to back a candidate based on promises that pertain to them, but as an adult, I need to process a whole ton of information and read between the lines before voting–especially for a presidential candidate. The problem being that even though I’ve more than doubled in age since my last favorite election, I don’t feel all that more intelligent. I mean, until recently, I didn’t even know what a caucus was or how it worked. This lack of knowledge is extremely problematic for someone as opinionated and vocal as I am. I like to have something to argue with random people and presidential elections are awesome for that, but what’s the point of having an opinion if you come out sounding like a complete idiot? Last week we ran a story by Anthony Pignataro in our Love, Sex and Politics issue that broke down Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. While that was really helpful in giving me the basics (and shedding the light on what the hell a caucus is), I still feel like I don’t know enough to make a wise decision–especially because he did such a good job of showing how close to “equal” they are. So what do I do? Well, I know for a fact that I won’t be voting for Republican John McCain. Why? It’s simple: who in their right mind would vote for the old white guy in such a historic race for presidency? Boring! He could be Gandhi reincarnate–ready to save the world and the baby seals– but there’s still no way I’m telling my great-grandchildren that I didn’t vote for either the first African American or woman to win a major party’s nomination for President of the United States. Stupid? Perhaps. But I can’t help but wonder how many other people are out there thinking the same thing. In fact, there are a lot of Maui people in the 25-35 age group that have no idea what the hell is going on in the government. I know this because they’re my peers. I found that once I came clean that I was a political imbecile, people around me started ‘fessing up, too. Which is at once a comforting and frightening thought. My friends and I have all agreed to vote this year, but we couldn’t give you a good reason (other than it seems like a good medium for stories to tell our future generations). Granted, this is the same group of people–now tattooed and toting keiki of our own–that backed Lingle when we were kids. Naturally, there are those people in my age group who have their opinionated fingers on the pulse of the election. These are the people I listen to because it’s a great (easy) way to learn about politics. But I wish I knew the percentage of American voters who felt strongly that they “knew” their candidate. I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of America is voting on a whim. That, or I just hang out with dumb people. As I was writing this column, my husband called to ask who we’d support in the Democratic Party Caucuses. “Are you going to stand on the opposite side of me just to prove a point,” I asked. “Probably,” he said. “John McCain all the way. Oh wait. He’s not a Democrat? Damn it!”
