LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR LINGLE’S BEHOLDEN TO NO ONE?!?! Four words for editor Anthony Pignataro: “Give me a break.” His comments about Governor Lingle’s energy proposals in Volume 9, Issue 35 (Cunning Lingle, Feb. 23, 2006) were either naïvely or intentionally incorrect. Pignataro questioned the Governor’s commitment to developing renewable energy sources because her reelection campaign accepted a $1,000 check (gasp!) from Tesoro. That’s a small donation from a large petroleum company that’s known for making much more generous contributions to other political candidates. Governor Lingle is beholden to no one, except the people of Hawai’i. And she’s made energy self-sufficiency one of her key initiatives for 2006, along with affordable housing and tax relief. Let’s give the Governor credit—not unfounded criticism—for leading the effort to reduce our longstanding dependence on imported fossil fuels. If her initiatives win support in the legislature, Hawai’i will benefit for many generations to come. -Alan Lee, via email

Mahalo nui to Council members Danny Mateo, Jo Anne Johnson and Michelle Anderson for having the willingness to bypass the slick corporate presentation and seek their own answers about Kapalua Mauka from the everyday citizens of West Maui. Maui Land and Pineapple had a positive role to play in Maui’s past, its future could be the same. ML&P founder, Colin Cameron had the courage and humility to listen to the Hawaiian people and move a hotel to accommodate the numerous burials in Honokahua. The present leadership of ML&P could show the same courage and humility by listening to the people of West Maui who are tired of being promised “no impacts, only benefits”’ by every developer for the past 20 years. Meanwhile, the reality is that

West Maui residents watch their families pushed out by soaring housing prices. They spend hours in traffic to get to work. They have inadequate medical facilities, overcrowded schools and a smelly, overburdened sewage treatment plant. Some West Maui wells are subject to hazardous agricultural pollutants, courtesy of ML&P (“Toxic Water,” Jan. 26, 2006). Its beaches are walled off by resorts and vacation rentals. Its reefs are stained by muddy run-off from both pineapple fields and housing developments. Is this the best we can offer to the folks who keep Maui’s “economic engine” running? As one of West Maui’s two major historic landowners and developers, ML&P needs to admit that the promises made 20 years ago have not been kept. And, turning the lands of Kapalua Mauka into a “product” to attract 600 more wealthy investors is not going to fix the problem. Do luxury resort developments really provide the infrastructure needed for local residents? If so, where are the roads, schools, hospital and other facilities West Maui needs? Can the Council look beyond the same old promises and insist on a more realistic system that serves local residents first? -Lucienne de Naie, Huelo

Handicapping the Board

What is Dick Cheney covering up? If you haven’t done anything wrong you have nothing to hide. Or does that only apply to victims of government wiretapping? On Feb. 11 Dick Cheney shot one of his quail hunting companions, 78-year-old lawyer Harry Whittington, in the face, neck and chest on the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas. What happened next was astonishing. What happened next was nothing. No public statement, no press conference, no mention that the world’s most powerful politician had blasted a guy with more than 250 shotgun pellets—for nearly 24 hours. Finally Katharine Armstrong, part owner of the ranch and a participant in the hunting party (though not a witness to the shooting), called Cheney for directions. “Mr. Vice President,” she told him, “this is going to be public, and I’m comfortable going to the hometown newspaper.” “You go ahead and do whatever you are comfortable doing,” she says he replied. Remember, Cheney is the man 2000 Bush supporters counted on to be the grown-up. Armstrong reported the incident to

the local Corpus Christi Caller-Times, whose story became national after being picked up by the Associated Press wire service. Talking to the media doesn’t come naturally to a vice president who hasn’t held a press conference for the last three and a half years, but what about the White House PR machine? Why did they wait so long to let the news out? Attorney Alan Dershowitz speculates that Cheney may have stalled to cover up drunkenness. “One possibility is that it takes approximately that period of time for alcohol to dissipate in the body and no longer be subject to accurate testing,” Dershowitz writes. “It is fairly common for people involved in alcohol-related accidents to delay reporting them until the alcohol has left the body.” Cheney has a history of public intoxication, having been twice convicted of DUI.

Sirius Radio’s Alex Bennett says that “Cheney and Whittington went hunting with two women (not their wives), there was some drinking, and Whittington wound up shot.” Bob Cesca alleges that one of the two women, U.S. ambassador to Switzerland Pamela Willeford is rumored to be “Cheney’s Lewinsky.” Cesca elaborates: “The vice president’s Secret Service detail had to decide what to do with Willeford by way of perhaps covering up her relationship with Cheney, and thus the delay in reporting the news.” Or maybe the cover-up was motivated by something more prosaic than getting plastered or getting laid: Cheney knew the shooting was his fault. Statements that he was “focused

on the quail” indicate a phenomenon hunters call “target fixation”—when a shooter is so concentrated on shooting his target that he loses awareness of what’s going on around him. Moreover, quail hunters are supposed to wait until the birds take flight before firing their guns. Cheney’s victim was about 30 yards away, indicating that he shot his 28-gauge straight across the ground. Cheney probably didn’t blow away his friend on purpose (although, without an investigation, we can’t know for sure). But the story still matters, particularly because he waited so long to tell it. In 1969 Senator Ted Kennedy drove Mary Jo Kopechne off a bridge at Chappaquiddick Island, near Martha’s Vineyard. The fact that Kennedy waited nine hours to report the accident to the police, more than the accident itself, prompted the endless speculation that ensured that he will never become president. Cheney should be held to the same standard. What should we do? What should we say? They’re typical questions after things go wrong. Logic dictates that, if he had nothing to hide, Cheney would have told his companions to tell the truth. There’s only one reason to let hour after hour slip away, knowing full well that your delay will add chum to the media feeding frenzy: you need time to make sure everyone gets their story—your story—straight. As usual for the Bush Administration, the Cheney shooting raises more questions than answers. The Secret Service wouldn’t let Cheney run down to Connecticut Avenue to buy pizza. So why do they let him play with guns? If he likes killing things, why did he apply for five draft deferments during the Vietnam War? And most pressing: how stupid does White House press secretary Scott McClellan think we are? “Why is it that it took so long for the president, for you, for anybody else to know that the vice president accidentally shot somebody?” asked a reporter. “You know what [Cheney’s] first reaction was? His first reaction was, go to Mr. Whittington and get his team in there to provide him medical care.” McClellan went on to suggest that the media focus on Bush’s healthcare savings account plan. If a millionaire like Whittington was forced to wait 24 hours to see a doctor, our healthcare system is in even bigger trouble than I thought. MTW

Hard to believe it’s time again to start a new era on the Liquor Control Adjudication Board. That’s right fans: it’s time to elect a new chairman and vice chairman! The Mar. 2, 2006 hearing will be the last for outgoing Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama and Vice Chairman Ken Yokouchi. Both have held their respective jobs for two years. Who will the rest of the board choose? Will they go by seniority? Will they go by popularity? Or will they really mix things up? No one can say for certain, but here are the odds on this year’s candidates:

Mary Doreen Alborano: 1 to 4 M.D.’s a shoe-in for the board’s top slot. She’s tough and aggressive, attends just about every meeting, always asks questions and nearly always sides with LC Director Franklyn Silva. Also, she’s only got one more year on the board.

Tami Nascimento: 1 to 3 The other member whose term ends in 2007, Nascimento is solidly pro-department, but she rarely makes her presence felt on the board. Just an adequate choice for vice chairperson.

Marilyn Chapman: 1 to 1 Chapman will stay on the board until 2008, but she could easily snatch the vice job from Nascimento. She pays attention, asks lots of questions but doesn’t always defer to the prosecution.

William Ghean: 3 to 1 Ghean’s still got a couple years left on the board. Plus his wife Kay is running for the West Maui seat in the state Legislature, so he might already have his hands full.

Darren Lopez: 5 to 1 Though fresh from a five-year stint on the Liquor Commission, Lopez is a rookie on the Adjudication Board and needs to wait a couple years before he grabs that brass ring.

John Urauchi: 6 to 1 Always pleasant and friendly, Molokai’s Urauchi might actually be too nice for the job. Plus he’ll be on the board until 2009.

Lance Collins: 1,000 to 1 Let’s just say constantly showing your colleagues how they’re allegedly violating liquor licensee rights isn’t the best way to win votes.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, FEB. 22 On this, George Washington’s birthday, I think it helpful to let you know that George W. Bush has for the last five years allowed our vaunted intelligence agencies to carry out a classified program reclassifying more than 55,000 previously declassified government documents. Many of these documents, government accountability activists have discovered, have been pulled from the public eye solely because they show how stupid our vaunted intelligence agencies have been in the past. Now in all fairness, I must mention that the reclassification effort dates back to Bill Clinton’s presidency, but I haven’t heard George “My views are one that speaks to freedom” Bush utter one mangled syllable to stop it. Oh, and need I mention that doing so is a violation of the law? I suppose I do, if for no other reason than the fact that a disturbing portion of this nation still believes Bush is telling the truth when he says he supports freedom and democracy.

THURSDAY, FEB. 23 There’s a kick-ass letter by retired Haleakala National Park Superintendent Don Reeser in today’s Maui News. The occasion? A chance to slap around Hawaii Superferry CEO John Garibaldi. See, back on Valentine’s Day Garibaldi planted a big wet one on himself in a Maui News op-ed piece he wrote entitled “Superferry supports public forums.” “We have had extensive public meetings, we plan to have more,” Garibaldi wrote. “Over the past year, Hawaii Superferry officials have reached out and met frequently—publicly and privately, formally and informally—with groups and individuals on Maui and all the other islands we plan to serve.” Not

quite, wrote Reeser—who has long said that the Superferry could make it much easier to move invasive species from one island to another. In fact, Reeser wrote that Garibaldi and his as-yet unbuilt Superferry have never really asked for public comment. “I don’t recall any meetings [with Garibaldi] that I consider public, because I would have been there,” wrote Reeser in today’s News. “He did speak to my Rotary Club and other similar groups, but this was clearly promotional, not a forum for community input.”

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Nice to see that new archaeological survey of super-developer Everett Dowling’s Makena lands seems to be progressing. Hard to believe now that he—and the Maui County Planning Commission—said all the old land surveys showing no ancient Hawaiian sites were fine, considering that archaeologist Lisa Rotunno-Hazuka has so far found 30 new, previously undiscovered sites in her current survey. In fact, The Maui News today mentions that Dowling has agreed to redesign his 71-luxury condo project (asking price for each unit: around $3 million) to take the new burial sites into account. Thirty new sites, where the county Planning Commission said there were none. Isn’t life just full of new surprises?

look collaboratively at the needs for growth in the community.” Okay, so they’re not exactly cozying up by the fireplace. But they’re going to be churning out some really great plans! “We don’t have any set plans for anything, but we’ve been thinking about this for a long time and looking at it logically, this is a place where there can be expansion,” MLP Vice President for community development Randall Endo told the News. Okay, so the planning part of the plan is not really going on at the present time. See, these corporate guys have to be a bit cagey here, since the county’s big effort to write a new General Plan is just beginning. In fact, the News says that’s what spurred these two big landowners to get together and do whatever it is these guys want to do. See, Maui Land’s bid to get one of its own—Vice President Warren Suzuki—on the General Plan Committee is really going to pay off!

MAUI’S FINEST SELECTION OF

MONDAY, FEB. 27 So Maui County mayoral hopeful Charmaine Tavares is so worked up over Lahaina traffic—and the promise of infinitely more traffic in the near future—that she will support a complete moratorium on all Westside development if it isn’t addressed soon. See, talk of the Lahaina Bypass has become fashionable again. You all remember that mythical road from Ka’anapali to Lahaina (perhaps even Launiupoko, since a lot of people seem to live there now)? It’s so much in vogue that Maui Land & Pineapple Executive Vice President for community development Bob McNatt says his company is starting a “grass-roots” campaign to fight for the Bypass, which state officials say will cost a stunning $100 million and possibly take another decade to build. This is not so strange—McNatt needs that road for his future Westside building projects like Kapalua Mauka and Pulelehua—without, driving through Lahaina will become so intolerable they might as well just shut the whole thing down and turn the town into a used car lot. Of course, everyone wants the Lahaina Bypass. Mayor Alan Arakawa wants it. Tavares wants it. Maui Land wants it. Governor Linda Lingle says it’s one of her top transportation priorities. All great, except nobody wants to pay for it. So nothing gets done. Simple, right?

TUESDAY, FEB. 28 Nine Democratic state Senators—including Maui’s own J. Kalani English (D, 6th District)!—have signed onto a resolution asking the state Attorney General to investigate the apparently crude ways Lingle’s office solicited more than $800,000 from companies to help pay for all her overseas trade missions since 2003. Specifically, they want to know just how many “special benefits” companies could get for their contributions—you know, above and beyond whatever companies get for normally contributing to political campaigns. Anthony Pignataro hates surprises. And mysteries. And black licorice. Especially black licorice. The red kind is okay, but not the black. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD PEOPLE WHO WORK TOO MUCH Obsessed executives have always taken business home at night, but increasingly they take it into the bathroom, with laptop computers, high-speed connections, flat-panel televisions and speaker phones, according to a February Wall Street Journal report. Said one, “I’m beside myself when I can’t get my e-mails.” But there are problems, e.g., “sound-chamber” sound (the hollow voice created by typical bathroom acoustics usually gives away one’s location) and the “BlackBerry dunk.” One Houston repair shop saying it gets a half-dozen jobs a day of portable devices accidentally dropped into the sink or tub, “or worse.”

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION In January, a police SWAT officer in Fairfax, Va., accidentally shot and killed an unarmed optometrist on whom the swarming team was serving an arrest warrant for suspicion of gambling. In April 2005, a SWAT team arrested 24 community poker players in Palmer Lake, Colo., but at least there were no casualties. In October 1998, a passive but startled security guard was killed by a SWAT team moving in on a club in Virginia Beach, Va., suspected of housing gambling.

TAX BUREAUCRATS GONE WILD! In December, a self-employed market analyst in Chimacum, Wash., requested from the IRS a copy of the 2003 Form 1040 and instructions, so he could revise an old tax return, and three weeks later received instead two shipments totaling 48,000 copies of 2005 Form 1040 and instructions. And tax officials in Valparaiso, Ind., admitted in February that they mistakenly valued one house at $400 million (though its previous assessment was $121,900), and even though they recomputed the owner’s bill, they failed to erase from the city budget the $8 million in tax revenue they were expecting from the property, including $3 million that they had already disbursed.

TOUGH TIMES With Clinton Dearman about to be sentenced for burglary and assault in Christchurch, New Zealand, in January, his lawyer asked for sympathy. Dearman had been surprised mid-burglary by his victims, who were all seniors who proceeded to beat Dearman up and hog-tie him (a photo of which made the newspapers). Thus, the lawyer said, Dearman had become a “laughingstock” among prisoners and would “never be able to hold his head up in criminal company again.” And in January, Alexis du Pont de Bie Sr., 62, who grew up in a du Pont family mansion and inherited $7 million, filed a lawsuit in New York City accusing his estate’s trustees of mismanagement that has reduced his wealth to $2 million and necessitated a cut in his allowance to $3,000 a month, making him, he said, “literally destitute and homeless.” MTW

You gotta love the Weinberg Foundation—You Must! After all, they just donated $2.5 million to the Molokai General Hospital’s renovation fund. You can’t buy publicity this good—oops, maybe you can. And bully for Maui Land—they made $14.6 million in 2005—up from losing $385,000 in 2004! But Hawaiian Telcom drops a couple notches on news that it wants to enter the local cable TV market. And that’s a bad move, because I don’t know a single person who has good things to say about his or her cable provider. MTW

What’s in a Dog? Hot dogs have a bad reputation for being a mystery meat product, but dogs these days are leaner and meatier than ever, thanks to strict regulations from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). For instance, the meat portion of your hot dog must be properly labeled on the packaging. They are usually made up of beef, pork, chicken or turkey. If it contains any byproducts or “variety” meats like heart, kidney or liver, those have to appear on the ingredient list too. Only 20 percent of the meat may be mechanically separated from the bone, the rest being muscle meat, similar to what you buy from the butcher. Up to 30 percent of the hot dog can be fat. Next you have your additives like breadcrumbs, cereal, oatmeal and some egg—these fillers can make up 3.5 percent of the frank. Soy protein can be used up to two percent and water can add up to another two percent. Then there are spices, preservatives and sometimes artificial coloring. But it’s all got to be on the label in order of predominance. Back in the day hot dogs were cased in animal intestines, which gave them a “snappy” texture when bitten into. Though you can still find these classic dogs, your modern hot dog is encased in cellulose and cooked. Of course, the casing is removed before they are slipped into their plastic packaging and shipped to the market. -J.R.

COVER STORY

My friend the attorney has long dreamed of opening a hot dog stand here on Maui. She figures that she can sell hot dogs all day long at a high traffic location and make millions without having to spend hours in court. I’m not sure about the millions of dollars made slinging dogs, but I do know that the hot dog is one of America’s favorite foods. According to the National Hot Dog Council in Washington, D.C., hot dogs are so popular that you and I and everyone else we know will eat about 70 of them this year. As with everything on Maui, the hot dogs you find locally stand apart from those on the mainland. For one thing, they’re red. We don’t have hot dog stands, hot dog carts or Wienerschnitzel—a magical mainland fast food franchise whose popularity lies somewhere between Arby’s and those independently owned hamburger shacks that boast selling the “World’s Best Pastrami”—but the island does have plenty of steamed red hot dogs served at mini marts, and mom and pop shops. But why are Hawaiian hot dogs red? I called Redondo’s Inc., the corporate home of Hawaiian Winners in Waipahu. Hitoshi Okada, the company resident, informed me that when he took over the business 15 years ago the red hot dog was already popular. In fact, it was Frank Redondo who originally created their red dogs when he started the company way back in 1949. As to why Redondo made them red, Okada could-

n’t say. Okada surmised that the red color may be because of an old Japanese New Year tradition involving red meats, but he added that Japan itself no longer follows this tradition. He also said the red color is still a favorite with local consumers here, be they Filipino, Japanese or Hawaiian. Maui may not have hot dog carts like big American cities, but we do have our fair share of great island wieners. You just have to know where to go to get your fix. Here’s where I get mine:

THE BREAKFAST DOG Don’t feel like a loco moco? The perfect local style breakfast on the go is a steamed frank and bun. You will find hot dogs at all the morning hot spots for picking up a little something with your coffee. I head to Tom’s Mini Mart in Pakakaulo for my steamed bun and hot red wiener, but you’ll find them in all corners of the island early in the morning, like at the Kuau Mart or Nagasako’s in Lahaina. Oh, and remember that ketchup counts as a vegetable serving. Tom’s Mini Mart, 372 Waiehu Beach Rd., 244-2323; Kuau Mart, 701 Hana Hwy., 579-8539; Nagasako General Store, Old Lahaina Center, 661-0985.

THE CORPORATE DOG Costco has this one cornered. After all, how can a mom and pop store compete with the $1.50 kosher dog on a sesame seed bun that includes an all-you-can-drink soda? These big and juicy bad

boys come wrapped in foil and include toppings like onions and relish with your usual ketchup and mustard. The only drawback is the $45 annual membership fee required to get you in the door. Costco, 540 Haleakala Hwy, 877-5248.

THE SAUERKRAUT DOG Who makes homemade sauerkraut? Annie’s Deli & Catering in Kihei, that’s who. Their quarter pound or half pound dogs come with plenty of their homemade fermented cabbage— all you want, in fact. But who eats that stuff? Pickled cabbage on your hot dog? Well, it’s famous in Germany and Captain Cook always took it with him on his sea voyages. Just try not to think about what happened to him as you chow down. Annie’s Deli & Catering, 2511 S. Kihei Rd., 875-8647.

THE TOPPINGS When you want loads of toppings, and the choice to have whatever your heart desires on your hot dog, you’ll find it at Scuba Dogs in Kihei at the amazingly low price of just 50 cents a pop. They generously serve bacon, olives, bell peppers, lettuce, pepperoni, cucumber, Swiss cheese, tomato and jalapeno, plus all the usual stuff like cheddar cheese, chili, ketchup and mustard on the ball park frank of your choice. You won’t find a red dog served here but the topping choices are phenomenal. Scuba Dogs, 1455 S. Kihei Rd., 879-4994.

THE FRENCH DOG Want a new French culinary experience? The Bakery in Lahaina has a delight for you—the pig in a blanket done Frenchy style. They start with buttery, flaky croissant dough and then wrap it around a juicy frank, then bake it to perfection. No need for toppings, just napkins to catch all the crumbs. The Bakery, 991 Limahana Pl., 667-9062.

THE CHILIDOG The classic “Coney Island” Dog is a hot dog served with chili and onions. Even

though we’re on a very different island from Coney you can still find a great chilidog. Chili comes in so many styles—with beans, without beans, spicy, vegetarian—that the lunch possibilities are endless. You will find some of the best chilidogs at Cool Cat Café in Lahaina. There they grill your bun and wiener, then pour on their spicy chili and cover it with shredded cheese. Or grab one at Wow-Wee Maui’s Kava Bar & Grill on Dairy Road with a sesame seed bun and some Kava. Cool Cat Café, The Wharf, 667-0908; Wow-Wee Maui’s Kava Bar & Grill, 333 Dairy Road, 871-1414.

THE HOMEMADE BUN For those more interested in the hot dog’s bread than its meat (you know who you are) head to Komoda bakery in Makawao. They’ve been baking bread on Baldwin Ave. for the past 60 years, and their secret family recipes are guarded for good reason. Their bread has a golden color, soft texture and a dreamy buttery flavor. They serve their hot dogs already dressed with the fixings inside their bakery-made buns—all you have to do is grab them out of the warmer. Komoda T Store & Bakery, 3674 Baldwin Ave., 572-7261.

THE CORN DOG Texas claims it invented this state fair treat back in 1942. Who knew before then that a cornbread-battered dog on a stick would be so good? While Mauians are stuck with only a county fair on island, it comes well equipped with the corndog. If you can’t wait for the first week of October, just head to your local Minit Stop. In fact, they’re on sale this week: two for $1.25. Stores located island wide, check your local listings.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL You can’t profess to have eaten hot dogs on the island if you haven’t gone to Fukushima’s Store in Haiku and ordered a dog with everything. These are so good there are Internet blogs dedicated to the

Fukushima Hot Dog Experience. I think the secret to their dogs is their special relish sauce, but no one can really say for certain. Go try one for yourself or at least plan your next trip to Hana around a stop to this store. Fukushima Store, across from Haiku Cannery, 575-2762.

THE VEGGIE DOG When the idea of all those refined carbohydrates and processed meats starts weighing heavily on your conscience, you can rest assured that the Tiki Lounge in Kihei is looking out for both your health and hot dog cravings. Sit in the Tiki-riffic patio and gorge yourself guilt-free with their vegan veggie dog that comes on a grilled roll. The free, help-yourself toppings bar include peppers, cheese, sauerkraut and much more. Tiki Lounge, 1913 S. Kihei Rd., 874-6444. MTW

Thai Chef Where you’ll finish your plate, not your sentence It takes more than great food to create a great restaurant. I was thinking about this the other day while eating at Thai Chef in Lahaina. See, Thai Chef is a great restaurant, but I wanted to know why. One key element is the atmosphere. While the restaurant itself is small, comprised of one dining area packed with little tables, it’s cozy and inviting. The dim lighting creates a candle-like glow further emphasizing the inviting atmosphere.

In addition to a nice ambiance, you need a capable and welcoming staff. Thai Chef accomplishes both these tasks. The servers are attentive, knowledgeable and very friendly. They’re willing to answer questions about the menu, always bring your food while it’s still hot and—perhaps most importantly, given that they serve mouthwatering Thai food—they never leave you with an empty water glass. When I had the pleasure of dining at Thai Chef, my roommate Brooke and cousin Danielle came along with me. We each picked a dish for the three of us to share. As expected, Brooke ordered the Chicken Pad Thai ($9.95), thin rice noodles mixed with egg, bean sprouts, green onion, chicken, and peanut sauce, topped with crunchy ground peanuts. Danielle decided on the Matsaman Curry Tofu ($9.25). That’s a variety of mixed vegetables and tofu simmered in coconut milk and yellow curry paste. I went with the Thai Beef Steak ($9.95), thinly sliced beef grilled with onions and tangy Thai steak sauce, served on a bed of chopped cabbage. As we waited for our food, we recapped the past weekend’s events and made plans for the coming week. We paused briefly when three steaming plates of food arrived at our table but quickly picked up our conversation while passing plates and dishing out our dinners. While the conversation had been going strong up to this point, it came to a screaming halt when we began eating. All attention shifted to the delicious food in front of us. As my mom would say, it’s a good sign when your guests are more concerned with finishing their plates than their sentences. This meal was definitely a winner. The Pad Thai was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The chicken was tender and juicy and the vegetables were crunchy and moist. The curry was equally delicious, prepared medium spicy, it had a nice kick but would not overpower

Owner Kam Chankhamany anyone with a sensitive pallet. The vegetables were fresh and flavorful and a good texture contrast to the soft tofu. The Thai beef steak was wonderful also. The tender meat and crunchy cabbage went well together. To be honest, anything would taste great if you drenched it in that steak sauce. With dynamite food, a courteous and competent staff, pleasant setting, and reasonable prices, Thai Chef is easily one of my favorite restaurants on the island. I should also mention they don’t serve alcohol but are perfectly happy if you BYOB. MTW

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band & The Dixie Hummingbirds Thursday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [MUSIC] Call it kismet, but a legendary band that has been around for three decades—The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (pictured above) will be playing on my birthday! Three decades! Brassy! Dirty? Hmm... But anyway, The Dirty Dozen combines funk, jazz, gospel and soul with the brass band tradition and jazz funeral dirges of New Orleans. They’ve also collaborated with Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews and Modest Mouse. And tonight they’re performing with Grammy-winning Dixie Hummingbirds, who’ve been around since 1928—not so much like me—but have been the inspiration of countless soul artists, earning the title “The Iron Men of Gospel.” Ahh... I couldn’t ask for a better birthday present. Now who’s gonna jump outta the cake? Tickets: $10, 20, 30. Call 242-SHOW. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

End High Tech Trash

DJ Ray

Friday, 10 a.m.-2:45 p.m. at One Main Plaza’s 5th floor conference room in Wailuku

Friday, 10 p.m. at Jacques

[E-WASTE] There are few households that don’t have an old television set, VCR or computer gathering dust in a closet. What to do with them—throwing such collections of rare and highly toxic metals and substances into the garbage is a crime against the Earth—is one of the great waste problems of our time. Hopefully, Portland, Oregon environmental consultant Wayne Rifer is here to help us out. He’ll be hosting two free workshops: a two-hour talk at 10 a.m. on how electronic trash harms the environment and another 45-minute talk starting at 2 p.m. on environmentally sound purchasing practices. For more information, call 270-7847. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

THURSDAY

[DANCE MUSIC] Local artist, party host extraordinaire and dance music technician Ray Masters (that’s his artwork to the right) has been working and playing harder than ever recently. He’s got a stunning new art gallery “Masters of Art,â€? which opened a couple months ago at the Old Paia Train Depot. Next week he’ll open CafĂŠ del Ray, an outdoor cafĂŠ and restaurant in the same innovative location. And recently, Ray’s become one of the North Shore’s most popular deejays; in response to the demand for a regular helping of his danceworthy beats, he has taken up a residency at Jacques on the first Friday of each month. He’s built up a large and loyal, young and beautiful, internationally stylish and carefree fan base so if you want to be on the inside, get there early before the line goes ‘round the block (believe me, it does—and quickly, too—usually by 11 p.m.!). You’ll wanna be a good boy/girl scout so bring your dough, your breath mints, your compact mirror and your dancing stilettos, boots or slippahs, and be prepared for extreme Jacquerie! Danse, partie, rire, fort de phase!

‘Aha Mele Monday, 6 p.m. at Maui Myth & Magic Theater

We Got Issues Sunday, 7 p.m. at Maui Booksellers, Wailuku [SLAM] Uh, yeah we do. I mean, think about it: When the world began, women, as the smarter sex, ruled over the way of life. They made the men do all of the manual labor for building stuff and getting food. Then, through evolution, men became bigger and stronger because of all of this work they were doing. Women’s bodies didn’t evolve the same as the men’s because they were mainly using their intellect and doing less of the physical labor. Once men realized that they were big and strong enough to dominate women, they went for it. Yes, women still had the smarts but men had the ability to take what they wanted. If you think about it, anyone would do the same thing, after being dominated for so long. Slowly, through time, women have regained some of the ground they lost way back then. Hopefully, we’re on our way to a place of true equality. Now, women are maintaining this growth by banding together and supporting one another with events just like this one. “We Got Issues” is similar to Vagina Monologues in that it’s a movement of women speaking out—but as a book compiling the “rants,” poems, songs and prose that are meant to inspire and raise awareness from women aged 18-35. And it’s the perfect time to do so, being that Wednesday is International Women’s Day. Get out there and learn more about the way women think and feel. Or hey, I’ve got an idea— maybe you could even contribute. [HEIDI KING]

DAY

[STAGE/MUSIC] I had never been to the ‘Ulalena Theater before Monday night—when I decided to check ‘Aha Mele. The theater alone was impressive, with a marble stage and the steep incline so there wasn’t a bad seat in the house. Then out came the little fireball that would be our host, Kathy Collins. After the introductions, we were experiencing an ancient chant, accompanied by a dancer—the traditional Hawaiian greeting before “Howzit!” All night long there were amazing Hawaiian, Grammywinning/nominated artists producing music and hula dancing that kept me in chicken skin the entire show. Add a good old story that Auntie guarantees is, “Hones’. Promise.” And you’ve got yourself an authentic Hawaiian variety show. Where else would you get to see these talents on one stage together? Even the Mayor was there! Through April 24 (except Mar. 13). Tickets: $50, kama’aina $35, keiki $25. Call 661-9913 or 877-688-4800. [HEIDI KING]

Man, Willis is old

Live Easy Bruce Willis barely gets it up Bruce Willis dons yet another hairpiece toward reprising his more hirsute era during the box office heydays of his trio of Die Hard movies. 16 Blocks is a sporadic chase sequence set around petty crook Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) who needs to be transported from his jail cell to Manhattan’s main courthouse, 16 blocks away, to give crucial testimony in a grand jury case that could end the careers of many dirty police officers.

16 Blocks

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/92 mins.

Alcoholic NYPD veteran Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) is coming off of a long night shift when he’s relegated to chaperone Eddie to his 10 a.m. court appointment. Every dirty cop in town comes to the aid of head police baddie Frank Nugent (David Morse) in attempting to catch or kill Jack and his handcuffed ward before they reach the courtroom. Mos Def makes the most of his valuable co-star screen time by creating a humorous character that periodically elevates the strictly formulaic script. Comparing Bruce Willis action movies to one another is a pastime that only lasts a couple of moments before some other actor, in this case Mos Def, becomes the focal point of the discussion. We take Willis for granted because he works primarily in the same genre with a character that he has mastered to a point of boredom. Much like his marginal police officer character Jack Mosley in 16 Blocks, Willis punches a clock, does his bit and punches out. He doesn’t bother to create a character because he’s already done it the same way in too many movies to mention. What Willis doesn’t account for, as an actor, is the vacillating quality of scripts. These days Hollywood is centrally inter-

ested in action movies like Batman or Superman that can be serialized and turned into franchises. 16 Blocks is the product of six film production companies that made the film before Warner Brothers took over the distribution end. This new business model has downsized what would have, ten years ago, been an action movie with bigger explosions and helicopter crashes. Screenwriter Richard Wenk fumbles with fleshing out his three main characters (Jack, Eddie and Frank) in this more condensed arena yet still can’t avoid narrative pit falls that sink his stereotypes into plot clichés that leave little breathing room for personality traits to mean anything. The centerpiece of the movie occurs after a crash involving a busload of passengers that leads to a standoff with Jack on the dark end of a hostage negotiation. As Jack performs some doublethink on the army of police snipers beyond the relative safety of the crashed bus, with its windows covered over in newspaper, the movie takes a somber tone that temporarily opens up its dramatic possibilities. It’s the one time when the characters aren’t running up and down stairs of apartment buildings and subways in their circuitous attempt to escape Frank Nugent and his legion of fairly incompetent fellow officers. Mos Def uses a pinched nasal voice for Eddie that resembles comedian Dave Chappelle’s trademark vocal inflection, and sets his character distinctly apart from Willis’ steely eyed incarnation. Def’s character choice works to his advantage as he uses it to create new corners of subtext for his character. Mos Def doesn’t so much steal scenes as palm them away from the action around him to create an oasis of naturalism. He uses his voice with an ironic awareness of the narrative artifice around him and gently deconstructs the story as it unfolds. There’s only one reason to see 16 Blocks, and his name is Mos Def. He’s simple and effective in representing a level of humanity lacking in all of the other aspects of the film. MTW

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CINEMA Wednesday, March 8 5 & 7:30 P.M., CASTLE THEATER PARADISE NOW - (PG13) - Drama - Two young men from the Gaza strip, Khaled and Said, are just 48 hours away from becoming the latest suicide bombers. 97 min.

New This Week AQUAMARINE - (PG) - Comedy, Drama, Family - Adolescent best friends need a miracle. When a mermaid washes into one of their pools, she promises that she can grant them a wish if they help her out. It’s about growing up, friends and learning that sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the people you love. No fish jokes here. 109 min. (Heidi King) 16 BLOCKS - (PG13) - Action, Thriller - Bruce Willis plays an aging cop that is assigned to get Mos Def’s character from the jail to a courthouse. The problem is, cops want dude dead. Hey, it’s tough to be a cop running from the police. See Film Critique. 101 min. (HK) ULTRAVIOLET - (PG13) – Action, Sci-Fi - For those of you who missed Aeon Flux back in December but can’t wait for it to come out on DVD, have no fear! This is the exact same movie—hot chicks, lots of gunplay, flashy future, evil government—except with Milla Jovovich instead of Charlize Theron. I can hardly wait! 88 min. (Anthony Pignataro)

Now Showing BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE 2 - (PG13) - Comedy - Martin Lawrence is back wearing the fat suit, once again needing to go deep undercover for the F.B.I. Isn’t it amazing how all a man needs to do is dress up like a woman in the movies, and all of a sudden he can run faster than a speeding bullet, leap over buildings in a single bound and kick just about anyone’s ass? Incredible. 99 min. (HK) BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - (R) - Drama, Romance, Western - Two cowboys work together, then become friends... and more? See how they deal with the blind hatred of society over a span of like 20 years. 134 min. (HK) CURIOUS GEORGE - (G) - Animation, Family How cute is this; Jack Johnson does all of the songs and Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore and Dick Van Dyke are the main voices. As if the little monkey needed any help getting cuter. That is just frickin’ precious. Oh yeah, you know who Curious George is, right? The monkey that gets in trouble all of the time. Think back, you grew up on this stuff. 82 min. (HK) DATE MOVIE - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance Two of the writers for “Scary Movie” put this one together. It looks hilarious and usually spoof movies don’t impress me. I guess you can’t really go wrong with making fun of relationships and the games we play. 83 min. (HK) DOOGAL - (G) - Animation - Based on a U.K. children’s series. A variety of animals, the leader being a dog, go on a dangerous voyage to save

the world from falling into the hands of the evil wizard, ZeeBadee. Famous voices of Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, Chevy Chase, Kylie Minogue, Kevin Smith & Jon Stewart. 81 min. (HK) EIGHT BELOW - (PG) - Action, Adventure - Paul Walker stars in this new Disney movie about sled dogs. It takes place in Antarctica where a series of events leads to eight sled dogs being stuck out in a storm. Based on an article in National Geographic. Unfortunately, it’s cold weather, so Walker will probably be keeping all of his clothes on. (HK) FINAL DESTINATION 3 - (R) - Thriller, Horror Follows the same story line as the first two. High school girl predicts a tragic incident, this time it’s a roller coaster accident, then it happens. The people she convinced to not ride the ride now have to try and cheat death. 92 min. (HK) FIREWALL - (R) - Action, Thriller - Harrison Ford stars as the loving husband and father that just happens to work at a huge bank and be the software creator. Paul Bettany plays the villan that kidnaps Ford’s family in order to rob the bank. Although we’ve seen the basic story before, it looks like a good one. 100 min. (HK) FREEDOMLAND - (R) - Drama - Samuel L. Jackson and Julianne Moore star in this thriller about a woman who gets car-jacked with her 4 year old son still inside. But the case keeps getting creepier as we find out the boy may be lost in the old abandoned child asylum. What is really going on here? 113 min. (HK) MADEA’S FAMILY REUNION - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama - Tyler Perry is back with another follow up that started with Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The whole family is having issues from weddings to children to abusive lovers. You know Madea is gonna lay the smack down. 107 min. (HK) MATCH POINT - (R) - Drama, Thriller - A guy (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) marries a lovely young lady (Emily Mortimer) who happens to come from a filthy rich family. Everything is picturesque...until he meets and becomes enchanted by another woman (Scarlett Johansson). Then the scandolous activity begins. I can’t tell if this one is going to be like Fatal Attraction or something more original. Written and directed by Woody Allen. 124 min. (HK) MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS - (R) - Comedy, Drama - When Mrs. Henderson is widowed, she discovers that she owns an old abandoned theater. After fixing it up, the community is shocked to find that she plans on having the girls in the show perform nude. But, hey, sex sells. 102 min. (HK) NANNY MCPHEE - (PG) - Family, Comedy - Think ugly Mary Poppins, except with Emma Thompson in the lead role. Pretty routine stuff, really—nanny checks in, uses magic to tame naughty brats—but Thompson is also one of the screenwriters, so there might be something to it. Also stars Colin Firth. 88 min. (AP) THE NEW WORLD - PG13 - Adventure, Drama - One of the most famous romances of all time, John Smith and Pocahontas. I highly doubt Smith was as hot as Colin Farrell though. You all know the story, I just hope that it’s more historically correct than the Disney version. 150 min. (HK) PINK PANTHER - PG - Comedy - Steve Martin plays well-to-do Inspector Clouseau. The Pink Panther is an amazing diamond that has been stolen and the Inspector, through “unintentional” slapstick comedy and dumb luck, is trying to catch the culprit. Don’t forget about his hilarious accent. 92 min. (HK) RUNNING SCARED - (R) - Crime, Drama - Paul

MAUI FILM FESTIVAL Castle Theater, 572-3456 Paradise Now - (PG13) - W 5, 7:30

MAUI MALL MEGAPLEX

I thought Ultraviolet was bad for the eyes? Walker plays Joey Gazelle (have you known many Gazelles in your life? I sure haven’t) in this new mob thriller directed by Wayne Kramer. Long story short, Gazelle is a low-level mob guy who ends up pissing off his bosses, who then threaten Gazelle’s family. Big surprise there! Also stars Cameron Bright. 119 min. (AP) TRANSAMERICA - (R) - Comedy, Drama - A conservative transsexual woman finds out she produced a son when she was a male. They meet and end up having to take a road trip together. Felicity Huffman stars. In case you’re wondering; transsexuals are people that have actually had the operations to make them a different sex than they were originally. 103 min. (HK) UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION - (R) - Action-Horror - This sequel to 2003’s Underworld promises to be, at the very least, loaded with lots of bloody-blockbustin’ action, and well, sexy, sultry eye candy—in that dark and tormented, wicked kind of way! Kate Beckinsale stars as the vampy-vixen Selene, the vampire heroine who realized in the prequel she was fighting against the wrong evil. But with hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) at her side, they battle against this ancient war between vampire and lycan (werewolf), in a romance as forbidden as the hybrid himself. Oh, the agony! The heartache! The torture of being a vam—I mean lyca—er...hmm. 106 min. (Tallia Monterroso) WHEN A STRANGER CALLS - PG13 - Horror, Thriller - Remake of the 1979 movie that spawned one of my favorite urban legends. A babysitter keeps getting creepy calls, repeatedly being asked if she’s checked the children. Normally I wouldn’t put any expectations on a horror movie with a piddly little PG13 rating, but this one actually looks pretty freaky. 87 min. (HK)

The Four-Letter Word The Haiku Hillbillys give dreaded folk music a makeover For the past year, the Haiku Hillbillys have been slowly infiltrating the local scene with an unlikely toe tapping, train-chugging sound. Some people would call it folk music—we prefer to call it a folk movement. “Folk music is a kind of curse word in music,” said Randall Rospond, lead singer, guitarist and mastermind of the eight-piece ensemble.

Randall Rospond CD Release Saturday, 7:30-11 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel, Wailuku. With the Haiku Hillbillys and special guests. No cover. Most nightclub owners are hesitant to book “folk” bands, or opt to stick them on a low-crowd night and not pay them— especially in an area besieged with demands for more Jawaiian and reggae grooves. But surprisingly, the Haiku Hillbillys have a down-home appeal that transcends genres. At a recent show at Stopwatch in Makawao, Rospond greeted a raucous, packed bar and introduced the band’s latest original song, “West Kuiaha Waltz.” “It’s technically not a waltz but I have some punk rock roots and refuse to call it anything else,” he said. “It could be a great dance song or great song to drink your beverage to!” But what is “hillbilly” music, exactly? Bluegrass is part of it. Fliers tout the band as “funky, groovin’, poetic folk.” But as far as the Haiku Hillbillys are concerned, it’s also just as likely to include tunes by Lou Reed, the New York Dolls or Iggy Pop. “Don’t let the name fool you,” said Rospond. “Like that band—the Brazilian Girls? Well, they weren’t Brazilian and

they weren’t [all] girls. I want people to ask, ‘Who is this? What are they doing?’ I’d rather they try to think about it.” The current lineup of Rospond’s Haiku Hillbillys includes Rand Coon on guitar, banjo and vocals, John Pollock on violin and mandolin, Geoff Coolidge on bass, Jimmy Coulter on drums, Don McClellan on dobro and pedal steel, Klaus Simmer on keys, and Troy Grow on electric guitar and vocals. Rospond writes most of the “ambiguously spiritual” songs and also has an eclectic folk show on Mana’o Radio, every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During one recent on-air stint, he opened with a Frank Zappa riff, segued into some bluesy Muddy Waters, which then led to the cigar-and-whiskey growl of Tom Waits, Jerry Byrd’s Hawaiian steel guitar, the jazzy downtempo of Wax Poetic with Norah Jones, Little Feat, the Latin Playboys featuring members of Los Lobos, and so on. Rospond even plans to do a live music series called “The F-Word” at Café Marc Aurel, on

the last Thursday of each month. Along with various local songwriters and musicians, he will host an experimental session designed to blow apart the notoriously dowdy concept— and often, contempt—of traditional “folk” music. This month on March 30 he’s featuring Teri Garrison, a local musician whose song “The Eyes”—produced by Willie Nelson— recently won Nashville’s Embassy Music Songwriter’s Contest. “I once went to an Alan Jackson concert in Iowa,” said Rospond. “I’m not a fan of mainstream country but it was impeccable musicianship, a great show. My hope is that people won’t be prejudiced about our shows.” Rospond is from Canada and has traveled as a troubadour of sorts from Florida to Toronto, Chicago, Alberta, California and then, for the last 13 years, Maui. Along the way, he’s opened for John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos, Hot Tuna, Valdy, Vin Garbutt, Stephen Fearing and, oddly, The Vagina Monologues. “I hate to admit it but I’ve been performing

since 1982,” said Rospond. “So that means I started when I was four! No, I’m just kidding.” Although he’s now embracing the challenge of redefining folk music, Rospond started as a poet and lead singer in a rock band, along the lines of Jim Morrison. At the time, he idolized Jim Carroll, Patti Smith and other great Beatrock poets. “Not that I would put myself in that group,” he said. “But they’re my heroes.” Rospond used to listen to the music of his parents—Glen Miller, the Mills Brothers and others—then got into Sex Pistols, The Clash and L.A. punk bands. He had some friends who were hardcore rastas. And he used to tour with the garage punk, Rolling Stones-influenced band called Dead Flowers. And all of that goes into the XXX-marked, moonshine clay jug of the Haiku Hillbillys’ music. “I just ask people to listen with an open heart and mind,” he said. “Hopefully, you’ll like it and we’ll fit into something you can deal with— or not fit in, if that’s what you like.” MTW

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You suck at making decisions to a timetable. So what? When you’re left to your own devices, this isn’t a problem. It’s only when you’re required to conform to somebody else’s schedule that you run into trouble. As hard as you try, you sometimes encounter an unavoidable, seemingly impossible deadline. Every Pisces needs a strategy for dealing with these situations effectively. I know some who simply flip a coin (a few times) and abide by whatever the result is, despite their own misgivings. They’ve recognized that they’d have misgivings—or at least mixed feelings—either way. What’s your tactic? Don’t have one? Work on that, this week.

Maui Recycling Service

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

If not now, when?

Nearly every Aries who wrote me (regarding the five things holding you back) mentioned problems with stickto-it-iveness. Many Rams have trouble seeing long-term (and occasionally even short-term) projects through to fruition. They feel compelled to sample many different experiences, and move on to new ones quickly. This is absolutely fine—as long as it doesn’t become a lifelong habit. Members of your tribe are usually very successful, once they’ve learned to rein in that intense (but ever-shifting) focus. The ones who learn to stay excited long after the honeymoon glow has faded are the ones who get rich, married and famous. The ones who don’t—well they don’t get much of anywhere.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Taureans rarely seek the easy way out. You don’t often shrink from unpleasant realities, or hesitate to work your way out of a hole. That’s why when there’s a simple route to success, absolution or happiness, you don’t trust it—frequently you don’t even notice it! Of course, there’s no such thing as a free ride so I don’t expect you to fall for any of the sucker trips that nail some of the more naïve signs. However, keep your eyes peeled for a realistic shortcut this week, because one is very likely to present itself. I know I’m fond of reminding people that the journey is more important than the destination, and I still stand by that. But I also believe that a good journey isn’t necessarily the one that takes the longest way around.

Honolua Surf Co. is now hiring:

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re gorgeous, darling. You’ve been lovely all along—only this week people are more likely to actually notice. That ought to feel good after feeling more or less invisible the last few months. Don’t let it go to your head, though; part of the reason people are looking at you with a new eye is because of the kind of humility or modesty you’ve acquired during this last chapter. Don’t start showing off now. Quiet confidence is the way. Go ahead and bask in this overdue spotlight of attention, but please resist the urge to perform in it.

Managers, Assistant Managers, Supervisors, Full and Part time Sales

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

We offer competitive pay, generous employee discount, 401K plan, Medical and Dental insurance, and opportunity for career advancement.

The convoluted, exhausting hoops you make others jump through are nothing compared to the obstacle courses you make yourself suffer. Why do you do this to us and to yourself? Your eagerness to leap to concrete conclusions based on a broad spectrum of ever-shifting emotions only makes life more unpleasant for you and everyone. “Because of this and that and this, it means he doesn’t love me.” Shit like that, whether it’s “true” or not (and it’s probably not), isn’t the least bit helpful and only makes it more likely that you’ll manifest the scenario that you dread. Please keep that in mind this week. Take things at face value—without imbuing them with hidden meanings—or don’t take them at all.

Apply at any of our Maui locations: Front Street, Cannery Mall, Whalers Village, South Kihei, Shops at Wailea Or fax resume to: 667-2875

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You really can’t keep a good Leo down. Now that you’re free of the dampening influences of some of those who were holding you back (mostly without meaning to, to be fair), you can go ahead and thrive in ways you haven’t been able to in many months (or, in some cases, years). Concentrate on rediscovering the parts of yourself that you’d nearly forgotten about, and certainly haven’t—in recent memory—expressed. Remember what’s great about you? I’ll give you a hint. One of the things I admire about Leos is their bold, unabashed, honest (yet kind) directness. You used to say shit most other signs just don’t have the balls to say. Isn’t it time you started again?

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) When I encounter someone who’s gung-ho to tear astrology a new asshole with their well-honed skepticism, I pop his philosophical hard-on by cheerfully agreeing it’s all bullshit. Spare me that boring crap. When I meet someone more open-minded, however, I’m usually happy to indulge their curiosity and even share whatever advice or guidance I can come up with. I know you tend to trust your own instincts over others’ insights, but this week I suggest you sheathe your cynicism; it’s not currently doing you any good. You need someone who’s objective to help you with this one—preferably a stranger. If you ask nicely, they might give you the advice and guidance you need. Even if they’re pulling it out of their ass instead of astrological insight, and even if you don’t agree with it, you’ll get something out of it anyway.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) While your luxury-loving ruling planet, Venus, was on a sojourn in the Spartan realm of Capricorn, things were strange. That’s not, shall we say, exactly a natural pairing. It’s like a trust-fund-socialite trying to shop in the auto parts store. She just doesn’t get what’s on offer or why she’d want to buy it. Luckily, this week Venus finally escapes that weird hell and finds herself, if not in the shoe shop of her fantasies, at least someplace where she understands the world around her. You, too, should feel more at home in the places you find yourself this week.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) If you give a dog treats all the time, they cease to be treats, really. He comes to expect them, and they’re suddenly more likely to be a source of disappointment (when he doesn’t get one) than pleasure. That’s not to say he doesn’t enjoy them every time you give them to him, but they’re no longer quite so special. You see where I’m going with this, right? This is not, of course, a reason to start withholding (from yourself or anyone) the basic pleasures of your existence. But choose at least one special thing that you’ll strive to keep that way, and not ruin with overindulgence.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

and BOOKKEEPER for our amazing new Lahaina location

Yeah, you could just wipe your hands of the whole thing and walk away. It doesn’t technically have anything to do with you, after all. But it’s happening in your neighborhood, so to speak. Most of the time, you’re right— you’d be better off leaving well enough alone. But in this case you actually have the power to do something about a situation—if not make it right, at least improve it. I confess, I buy into that whole “with power comes responsibility” thing, so if I were in your shoes, I’d feel some kind of obligation to try. Don’t you?

featuring Maui’s finest Open Wok Display Kitchen.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) It’s not that there aren’t many layers to you; it’s that you’ve got them so well compartmentalized and under control—each one emerges when it’s appropriate—that most people think of you as an incredibly consistent, excessively-focused and slightly boring person. They don’t get to see all the other sides of you—except maybe this week, when it might be in your best interest to allow some cracks, at least, to appear in the façade. Hell, while you’re at it, just rip off your business suit, stripper-style, and show off what you’ve got underneath. I mean, if you’re going to do it, why not do it with some kind of flair?

Individual would require previous management experience and a positive approach to leadership. Please email

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Life should start to feel significantly lusher this week. That’s a good thing after the kind of bare bones winter you had. Enjoy your suddenly much more rich-feeling surroundings this week, but please don’t overindulge. All that abundance after the Spartan existence of your most recent chapter could make you sick. And the last thing you want is to be miserable because your life has gotten better. So go ahead and enjoy the improvements that have come your way—but go slow. Savor them slowly—and make them (and your enjoyment of them) last that much longer.

Slammin’

Poetry is like a swoon with this difference: It brings you to your senses. -Charles Bernstein, poet and essayist A man in a black suit walks up to the mike. Facing the cramped room of about 50 or so intent onlookers, he erupts in an animated poetic delivery as he strides dramatically across the floor. “My brain hurts, it swells!” he exclaims, without notes. “It squirts, it jerks, it lurks! At all the women I see… Seven years of fears and tears and lies! …In the end it’s just an American dream.” It’s Sunday night, chilly and raining, and I’m at a slam. I’m inside the quaint Maui Booksellers shop in Wailuku, and I’m eyeballing the chocolate cake on the counter of the tiny café in back but am too afraid to lose my seat once I get up. The place is packed. Apparently, the indie bookstore has been hosting these poetry slams for the past 11 Sundays. What the hell have I been doing? This is the stuff of nouveau intellectual urban culture that I long for! And yet, every Sunday I spend in some dive bar or holed up at home watching Project Runway marathons. Oh, but I be lookin’ fabulous in my Paris Hilton-inspired neon-green shirred smock while sitting in a swivel chair at the Hang Loose! So the deal with tonight is that it’s a preview for the big “We Got Issues” Rant Fest they’re hosting next Sunday on March 5. It’s going to be much like tonight, only with Makawaobased Inner Ocean Publishing looking for young women to express themselves about an issue—more specifically, an issue related to money, health, spirituality, motherhood and violence—by way of poetry, prose, song or whatever creative outlet tickles your fancy. Got a haiku about compulsive shopping? How ‘bout an OCD jingle or a lactation limerick? Wanna discuss your recent transgression into the faith of Discordianism with a 28-line Shakespearean sonnet? Come on down! So anyway, after the man in black does his thing, a modest-looking woman in glasses busts out a rap about Dick Cheney; a somber, mustached man in a leather jacket reads his poem about babysitting for a hooker; a silver-coiffed lady with lovely British diction charms with her garden-influenced poetry; and a stocky businessman in an aloha shirt performs an ode to exes—a poem titled “Spurned Exes” read simply, “Woke this morning, took a shit, thought of you.” But there are other poignant moments. I get a little choked up when a jovial 48-year-old Carolina-born man with a booming voice reads his “When They Call Me the N-Word (it used to make me cry)” piece. And I feel the young, heartbreaking angst of a pixie-like girl with a shaved head who reads a harrowing, emotionally honest piece about drinking, alienation and the insecurity of growing up. But thankfully, all that poignancy is interspersed with hilarity, as white-ponytailed slamregular Frank Rich has us giggling with his “I’d like to thank the Academy” speech, comically expressing his displeasure at the loss of artistic vision—and real acting—in film these days, due in no small part to the number of awards shows industry people must attend. A vibrant woman named Bernice riles the crowd with a powerful and inspiring “We All Began as Afrikan” call and response, followed by young Melissa with the blue-violet hair, who nervously releases her heartfelt “Movement” poem in long lyrical flow, seemingly in one breath. And then Jarrell, an obvious and natural thespian, quite theatrically performs an entertaining existential soliloquy—and not at all Popeye-esque—of “I Am What I Am.” In all, there are an impressive 22 contestants performing their unique literary verse. But it’s acclaimed local playwright, artist and activist Pat Masumoto who eventually wins over the crowd, judges and $100 cash prize with her passionate encouragement to “let that dark side come around. “Reality and sensitivity don’t mix!” she begins, with proper poetic cadence. Then, upon ending, the petite poet with the sweet smile gives her rapt audience an intense, effective and entirely convincing glare. “I’m a bitch and I spit on the slimy sidewalks of society.” Samantha Campos once performed a rap called “Free Willy,” which took place at a political rally in front of UC Santa Cruz in the summer of ’96 and raised important issues concerning the true identity and sexual orientation of William Shakespeare.
