LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR HATES PIGNATARO, GOLF DIGEST “It’s times like this that I think back to that great, sober expose of American hypocrisy known as Office Space, and the scene where the Ron Livingston character tells the Jennifer Aniston character, ‘You know, the Nazis had pieces of flair that they made the Jews wear’” (Coconut Wireless, Feb. 28, 2008). I am a die-hard fan of OS but still cringe when he (RL-Peter) says this quote. You know why? Because even in its attempt to bring levity, the images of Jews wearing Star of David Patches being loaded into trains at gunpoint, most likely to their deaths, ruins it for me. For you to use this quote by proxy as a lame attempt at humor to support Obama’s choice not to wear a lapel pin shows some of your character. And I am quite sure I don’t care for it. Your choice also mirrors Golf Digest’s [sic] lame attempt to ride the publicity garnered by Kelly Tilghman of Golf Channel by printing the Noose on its cover. Not Funny. I am not even Jewish. I would guess that you are not Jewish Mr. Pignataro as well. Nor have you had your race/religion put on the blocks for

extinction. Because your use of a religions horrific endurance’s at the hands of a Nazi regime shows very poor taste. -Grayson Sheridan, Lahaina Anthony Pignataro responds: Humor is subjective, but it’s precisely because the Office Space joke about Nazis and flair is in such poor taste that I quoted it for my column. See, not to get too technical or anything, the thrust of the humor, if you will, of the joke in question is against the Nazis, not the Jews. When a person laughs, he or she is laughing at the Nazis, not the Jews. And to laugh at the Nazis— be it during Office Space, Hogan’s Heroes, The Producers or Top Secret! (though that film was, now that I think about it, actually not all that funny)–is to belittle one of the most racist, murderous gang of thugs in history. Oh, and it was Golfweek—not Golf Digest—which did the stupid noose thing on the cover.

MORE ON BRAGG Thank you for showing that greed is not only a good old boys club (“In the Name of the ‘Father,’” Feb. 28, 2008). Patricia Bragg is just another greedy mainlander promising to preserve land and then developing it. I’ve seen her on Oahu loudly boasting about her accomplishments and all the land she owns on several continents.

All I know is the stories I hear from people who have worked for her without being paid. Perhaps she has never heard the wisdom of not telling lies on an island where things are not so easily hidden. -Harold Kyoki, via email Patricia is an Inspiration. Patricia recently told me that she purchased this tract of land to protect the trees and give the farmers the opportunity to continue their organic faming. This is in line with her mission and character. -Dr. John F. Demartini, via Mauitime.com Just read the letter from Bragg’s attorney (Letters, Feb. 21, 2008) and noticed something strange moving behind the curtain. I don’t know anything about water rights but it looked like [he] is trying to do some kind of fancy shell trick. Keep us looking over here to keep us from looking at the hanky panky over there. Isn’t it obvious to everyone that you would not need to preserve water rights on separate parcels that, according to him in the same letter, will never be separate parcels again? He also states that this water issue excuse only applies to SOME parcels, why then would they need to get separate lot determinations on all of them? Just put the

whole thing into a protective trust and make your actions match your words already. -Ka‘ohi Johnson, Kahului

CORRECTION In our Feb. 28, 2008 story “In the Name of the ‘Father,’” we failed to make clear that it was Bragg’s website (www.bragg.com) that contains the modified version of freelance writer Vicky Uhland’s profile of Patricia Bragg.

Camp Darfur An interactive event on genocide visits MCC

Photos: Jason Waterhouse

Since February 2003 the Sudanese government has sponsored bands of Janjaweed (“devil on horseback”) who routinely raid villages and kill farmers in that nation’s Darfur region. The result so far is an estimated 450,000 deaths and three million displaced people. “Rape is routinely used as a tool of genocide to dilute the African blood of the victims,” Katie-Jay Scott of StopGenocideNow.org said. She explained a typical raid: the Janjaweed surround a village in the early morning. They disconnect all cell phone networks. Then government airplanes drop bombs onto a village. As villagers scatter, the Janjaweed kill as many people as they can. Those who escape face grim options. They might be able to make it

to a refugee camp in neighboring Chad, but must walk many days through the desert without food or water to get there. After weeks of processing they might be allowed to cross the border and claim the barest of necessities—one tent per family and a small food ration. Many refugees have spent years in these camps. Five hundred people die in Darfur each day. Eighty percent of the children affected by the fighting suffer from malnutrition. And there are more than 200,000 currently living in the camps in Chad. Humanitarian organizations can help just 20 percent of the survivors. Last week, Maui Community College (MCC) students got a chance to face this tragedy head on when Camp Darfur, a traveling interactive examination of the genocide plaguing Sudan, visited the cam-

pus. MCC’s Hawai‘i Institute for Human Rights sponsored the visit in collaboration with StopGenocideNow.org (SGN). “It was an extremely informative event,” Josh Cooper, MCC’s Political Science professor and Hawaiian Institute for Human Rights’ director, said. “It was inspirational because it was ran by normal everyday people who didn’t know what to do but knew that they had to do something [about Sudan].” It was midmorning on MCC’s Great Lawn when Gabriel Stauring and KatieJay Scott of SGN set up five white canvas tents with the help of MCC student and faculty volunteers. Each of the tents represented the history of five genocides and millions of untimely deaths. They formed a physical timeline of the tragedies using video clips and facts painted on and hung around the exhibit. Throughout the day, around 100 students, faculty and community members toured the displays. They emerged from the experience with a deeper understanding of human atrocities that spanned the globe: Armenia, the Holocaust, Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur. At the end, participants were chal-

lenged to help call for an end the current killing in the Darfur region of Sudan. “I found there was no way to interact personally with the victims,” Stauring said of his inspiration to spearhead several projects working for an end to the Darfur genocide. As a family counselor, he identified a need to “make it personal” and help concerned citizens all over the world interact with Sudanese refugees. To do this, Stauring and Scott visited several Sudanese refugee camps in Chad. There they filmed refugees, posting the videos and a blog about their experiences online. Anyone with Internet access could then watch the videos and connect with the refugees by asking them questions that would be passed on by the activists. The result was a dialogue between the victims and people throughout the world. Once home, they added their footage to the Camp Darfur project to aid in educating the public. “I believe change can be made,” Scott said. “That’s what keeps me going.” For more information visit stopgenocidenow.org. ‘Never Said Anything’

Traveling to Bali, stepping into an uncertain future Life in the fast lane/sure to lose your mind/Life in the fast lane/Everything, all the time. -Don Henley One of the guilty pleasures of living in the era of cheap oil is international travel via modern jet airplanes. Thousands of airline flights connect people from one continent to another, while collectively gulping more fuel than every SUV combined. Few have demanded greater fuel efficiency standards for commercial airliners, which are deemed a modern necessity. And so we continue to fly the friendly skies, though may soon change given that petroleum now tops $100 a barrel. As I island-hopped my way from Maui to Honolulu, then to Guam and Bali, I found plenty of time for reading. My reading material was the newest book by Richard Heinberg: Peak Everything—Waking Up to the Century of Declines. Heinberg has previously penned three books on “Peak Oil,” that much-debated moment when the world will reach (or has reached) its maximum possible rate of oil extraction. Peak Everything takes this thinking to the next level, and considers peak production of coal, natural gas, uranium and precious metals extraction, logging, grain production, fresh water availability, arable land and wild fish harvests. Compounding the looming consequences of depleting these resources are ever-rising population and the increasing emissions that continue to alter the Earth’s climate. Many of us are unwilling to delve into a scholarly document of this sort, portending a great unraveling of life as we know it. We seem more content

LC Watch Three establishments will face the Maui County Liquor Adjudication Board on Mar. 6. All three are up on the same charge: serving alcohol to a minor in a sting operation. But one—Kala Mart, a small liquor store in Kihei—nearly missed out on all the festivities. That’s because owner Frank Wanca says he personally didn’t find out that he was up on charges of serving a minor until a few weeks ago, even though the actual sting operation went down on June 28, 2007.

Why we’re at the peak

in naïve denial, unwilling to read the handwriting on the wall despite irrefutable evidence that we all live in a precarious house of cards (the image on the book’s cover) constructed by our species, homo sapiens. One of my travel partners on the Bali adventure is Sophia, a tow-headed version of the Energizer Bunny, complete with pink Crocs, size zero. Like most toddlers finding their social and language skills, Sophia loves to play peek-a-boo. Again and again, she goes from inquisitive attention to glee as a willing adult covers and uncovers their face. But many of the same willing adults are less inclined to do everything necessary in their lives to minimize their carbon footprint and sound the alarm to others, so children like Sophia can grow up in a world that isn’t predestined to a monumental collapse of our existing life-support systems.

21st century over-consumption: population growth requires more energy, leading to more fossil fuel extraction, which produces more available energy, leading to increased extraction of other resources and production of food and other good, which provides for more population growth—seemingly ad infinitum. But such “self-reinforcing feedback loops,” when observed in other microcosms in nature, usually lead to species-wide population crashes and die-offs. None of this is easy to contemplate, nor is the information easily discussed in casual conversation. Yet, all that’s needed for the worst-case scenario of system collapse to materialize is for world leaders to continue with existing policies or take too long in implementing corrective measures. Living on an island like Maui, Oahu, Guam or Bali should allow residents to appreciate the fragility of the energy, food

According to Wanca—who’s pleading no contest to the single count against him—here’s what happened: the guy Wanca hired to work the store on the night in question got stung, but then like a guilty student who failed a test at school, kept it to himself. “I thought he was a great employee,” Wanca said. “But he never told me he got a summons.” This meant that for the rest of 2007, Wanca insists he had no idea that he’d been busted. This was time he could have spent planning a defense, but instead, he spent it just watching his business as though nothing had happened. What’s more, Wanca says that he visited the county Liquor Control offices after the sting operation on some unrelated business, and got some strange looks from the staff. “They looked at me funny,” Wanca said, “but never said anything to me.” Then in January, seven months after the sting, Wanca says he finally found out that he had a serving-a-minor charge hanging over him. And that’s when he says he fired the employee who’d gotten stung. Wanca will doubtless tell all this to the Adjudication Board on Mar. 6. They tend to take a hard line on managers duped by their employees, but you never can tell.

RULEY’S STILL DIALED IN At Hawaiian Telcom (still owned by the Carlyle Group, one of the world’s richest and most powerful private equity firms), even when you’re out, you’re apparently still in. That’s right—according to the Feb. 28 Honolulu Advertiser, recently resigned company CEO Michael Ruley is still collecting an HT paycheck. And I’m not just talking his $1.3 million severance package: Ruley also gets a monthly $23,830 consulting fee. Forgive my naiveté, but this seems odd to me. Ruley, you see, was not a very good CEO, and the Advertiser wasn’t gentle about pointing that out: “During his [Ruley’s] tenure at Hawaiian Telcom, the company lost thousands of customers and the state Public Utilities Commission opened an investigation into the company’s poor customer service.” Hey, new HT CEO Stephen Cooper: Ruley was out of the building. He quit. Are things so bad there that you actually require his consultation?

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD NOW THAT’S ART! Several Duke University campus organizations, including the Women’s Center, the Student Health Center and the Women’s Studies Department, sponsored a “Sex Workers Art Show” on Feb. 3, at which nearly nude “artists” danced for students and others while vulgarly criticizing America via acts such as a woman’s pretending to eat excreted dollar bills and a man’s kneeling with an American flag inserted in his rear end. A university spokesman explained to a National Journal reporter that the recent show was acceptable because it was “art” and “social commentary,” rather than male-bonding entertainment.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY

There is usually a well-stocked Red Cross tent when the January “corralejas” (amateur bullfights) take place in towns in the Colombian countryside, reported The New York Times in January. “This year was calm, no deaths yet,” said a newscaster in Sincelejo. Hundreds of wannabe matadors jump into makeshift rings, some sponsored by local merchants but others merely inebriated or sober and foolish, some gaudily dressed,

FAMILY VALUES A Chicago man traveled to Sheboygan, Wis., in December to finally meet the 18year-old woman who was his biological daughter, but during the same visit, he was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting her while she was sleeping.

LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Lord Balaji was a locally popular Hindu god in Hyderabad, India, until a few years ago when a priest noticed that more of his worshippers were complaining that valuable U.S. professional “H-1B” visas were harder to get. Overnight, Balaji was transformed from a purveyor of general prosperity to the “visa god,” specializing in lucky H-1Bs, and the temple now draws 100,000 visitors a week. Said one, to a Wall Street Journal reporter in December, “I’ve never heard of anyone who’s gone to the temple whose visa [application] got rejected.” Typical advice from priest C.S. Gopala Krishna is simply to walk around the temple “11 times.”

LIFE IN THE OC In December, street performer John Domingue said the Huntington Beach, Calif., police have finally stopped hassling him for soliciting tips at the city’s famous Pier Plaza when he demonstrates his skill at hammering nails into his nose without serious injury. Some bleeding results, which is why police said they stopped him in the first place. The American Civil Liberties Union said it is watching the case, citing Domingues’ constitutional right to perform his nosenailing, sword-swallowing and fire-eating acts for donations. MTW

prohibit corporate donations to candidates. If we are going to chance Hawai‘i’s campaign finance law, it should be to reduce the amount of corporate money in the political process, not increase it.” Eighteen individuals and organizations submitted testimony on HB 2455 to the Judiciary Committee—16 of which were in opposition—and the committee’s Feb. 5 vote went 12 to one for approval (Maui’s own Angus McKelvey didn’t end up voting, but Joe Souki and Kyle Yamashita voted aye). With that kind of spread, anyone want to guess how tomorrow’s House floor vote will go?

THURSDAY, Feb. 28 Surprise! The state House “recommitted” HB 2455 back to the Judiciary Committee. That means it’s dead. Guess there might be some hope for us after all.

FRIDAY, Feb. 29

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 27 Just got a press release from a coalition of organizations—League of Women Voters Hawai`i, Common Cause Hawai`i, Voter Owned Hawai`i, Sierra Club Hawai`i Chapter, Hawaii’s Thousand Friends, Kokua Council, Advocates for Consumer Rights, Hawai`i ProDemocracy Initiative, Citizen Voice, Progressive Democrats of Hawai`i and Americans for Democratic Action/Hawai`i—urging everyone not already in one or more of the above named groups to call/write/poke our state representatives into voting down House Bill 2455 tomorrow. This bill, which hasn’t gotten a lot of publicity, would kill the current state law banning corporations from contributing more than $1,000 to a candidate during an election and allow these same corporations to contribute the same as the rest of us: $2,000 to a candidate for a two-year office, $6,000 to someone wanting a four-year statewide office. Except, of course, corporations aren’t like you and me: they have vastly greater cash reserves from which to draw. What’s more, according to state Campaign Spending Commission Executive Director Barbara Wong, this bill would actually make it very difficult for us private citizens to track corporate contributions. “The federal government banned corporate donations in 1907,” Common Cause Hawai‘i spokesperson Nikki Love told the House Judiciary Committee during a Feb. 5 hearing on the bill. “Twenty-two states also

Unlike many of my friends and colleagues, I don’t believe in karma. I mean, karma would certainly go a long way to explaining why everything associated with the name Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. has become an absolute dud, but as I said, I don’t believe the universe works that way. See, if I believed in karma, then I wouldn’t particularly care that today a bunch of environmental activist groups got together and appealed Second Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza’s lifting of the injunction against the Superferry back in November 2007, which in itself was a product of our brilliant state Legislature passing—and Governor Linda Lingle signing!—Special Session Act 2, which exempted the Superferry from Hawai‘i’s environmental laws. “The Superferry is already wrecked,” I’d say to my karmabelieving self, “wasting away in some Honolulu drydock with busted up rudders (at least), waiting for her corporate overlords to figure out that their arrogant, taxpayer-subsidized defiance of local environmental concerns has swamped them forever.” But alas, I do not believe in karma, which means I’m left putting my faith in residents fighting in our courts to uphold the very laws our lawmakers don’t seem interested in upholding. It’s not as elegant a solution as karma, but in my opinion it’s a lot more heartening.

SATURDAY, Mar. 1 I don’t think F. Scott Fitzgerald had Nu`uanu on Oahu in mind when he wrote that “the rich, they’re different from you and me,” but he might as well have.

taining them—is big business out here. So it seems odd that Mayor Charmaine Tavares and her administration are putting the hammer down on small companies that do business with tourists without offering some kind of cushion. Last year we had the big crackdown on transient vacation rentals. That seemed to go so well—Tavares wanted island-wide outrage, right?—that the county has decided to put the screws on surfing, kayaking and diving companies that operate out of our beach parks. If the county Parks Department gets its way, the number of beach parks accessible to commercial operators would drop from 28 to 20 in an effort to “find a balance” in beach access between tourists and residents, Parks Director Tamara Horcajo said in The Maui News today. And hey— don’t get me wrong: there’s nothing worse than heading to the beach or that secret kayaking spot and finding a bunch of trucks and visitors from Middle America standing around like it’s all some kind of private amusement park. But I’m also worried that we’re going to create two beach worlds here. One will have beaches dominated by the big hotels and resorts, with the packs of commercial operators growing ever denser, while the other will have beaches dominated by locals. And this would be okay, except the nicest, whitest sand beaches on the island will fall in the first category and be pretty much impossible for locals to enjoy.

our own Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye aren’t the most powerful people in the U.S. Senate. The Honolulu Advertiser published a brief piece on the rankings today on their website, pointing out that Akaka is ranked 39th most powerful senator and Inouye 35 th , which aren’t really bad numbers in the 100-member Senate but are significantly worse than last year, when both senators were tied for 21st most powerful senator. Going deeper into the Congress.org rankings, I found that Inouye—something of a pork barrel fan—is still only ranked as 20th most powerful senator in terms of earmarks (Akaka’s a miserable 71st in terms of bringing home federal dollars). But Akaka outranks Inouye in terms of getting legislation passed—a very respectable 16th compared to Inouye’s 26 th ranking. But most importantly, neither Akaka nor Inouye qualifies as the biggest loser in the Senate. That distinction belongs to Senator John Barrasso (R, Wyoming). The honorable rookie Senator Barrasso came in dead last, somehow falling behind even Senator Larry Craig (R, Idaho), a rightwinger who last year pled guilty to soliciting a male undercover cop in an airport restroom, then attempted to withdraw his guilty plea after journalists published the story.

ROBREPORT PEAK: continued from page 6 and economic structures on which we rely. Take Guam, where prosperity teeters between Japanese tourism and the U.S. Military. Guam stands out from the hundreds of other islands in the South Pacific because it’s a U.S. Territory and thus a strategic hub for transportation and military preparedness. It appears, to a first time visitor, to thrive with military housing construction, a touristy hodge-podge of hotels along pristine Turow Bay and a working populace numbed to their interdependence by imported goods of all kinds. But visiting Bali in Indonesia is more like stepping into a dream. Warm, humid air lulls the visitor into a trance-like state of relaxation. Bali is a unique and apparently harmonious blending of many disparate elements. Religion and culture permeate people’s daily lives, as do creativity and beauty. Simple offerings are made each day with small woven baskets, flower petals, rice or crackers and incense are placed in front of temples, homes, businesses and shrines. In lush Ubud, tourist bungalows border rice paddies and homes and businesses are hand-crafted works of art, not pre-fabricated tract homes or town houses. Indigenous materials are used, including bamboo for framing, local hardwoods, thatching for roofs and locally hewn stones and handmade tiles. Local artisans are world-renowned for their textiles, batiks, stone and woodworks. Yet Bali is also greatly dependent on tourist dollars. After the 2002 disco bombing, record numbers of people lost their jobs or became unable to pay bank loans on their businesses when the tourists stopped visiting. Now recovered from that recession, the economy is on the upswing, as are the numbers of cars and scooters on the narrow roads, the amount of air pollution and the demands on resources from a growing visitor and resident population. To a longtime resident of Maui, it all sounds very familiar. ow do we avoid the seemingly inevitable future collapse of society that was set in motion by the industrial revolution’s requirement for cheap, abundant fossil fuels? Can’t technology save us? Heinberg relates this tendency to bargain for an acceptable replacement: “Always the solution is technology: solar or wind, or maybe a bit of hydrogen for green-tinged idealists; nuclear, tar sands, methane hydrates, and coal-

H

to liquids for hard-headed, pro-growth economists and engineers; Tesla’s freeenergy magnetic generators for the gullible fringe-dwellers.” But technological “solutions” are likely to be little more than a band-aid, when stopping the bleeding will require a tourniquet. Every day we use 85 million barrels of oil—as well as millions of tons of coal and billions of cubic feet of natural gas—to run our energy network. The only way forward that doesn’t end in catastrophe for mankind and thousands of other species is to scale back both the numbers of humans and our per-capita consumption rates. Like the Greeks, Romans and Babylonians, we created unprecedented abundance while ignoring the long-term consequences of our actions. Homo sapiens has proven to be the most harmful of all species, fouling not only his own nest, but the entire planet. The promissory note is now coming due. Heinberg insists that his overall message is not be one of doom. Rather, it’s that of inevitable change, and the need for redefining our choices on a scale of speed and proportion unlike anything previously known in human history. “Our central survival task for the decades ahead, as individuals and as a species, must be to make a transition away from the use of fossil fuels,” Heinberg wrote. “[A]nd to do this as peacefully, equitably, and intelligently as possible.” Three months ago, the United Nations Meeting on Global Climate Change convened here on Bali, discussing follow-ups to the Kyoto Protocol on reducing worldwide emissions of greenhouse gasses. The outcome was more foot-dragging by the U.S., the world’s second highest emissions producer, after China. While a global two-to-five percent per year reduction of fossil fuel consumption is a worthy goal, we need much more. Equally earnest efforts must be made by the world’s nations to address water scarcity, overpopulation, overfishing, chemical pollution and war. We must recognize that our future survival as a species depends on whether we will share dwindling resources instead of fight over them. As a first-time visitor to Bali, I’m struck by the sincerity and kindness of the Balinese people, so quick to smile and willing to go to great lengths to serve. In the context of all the finite resources, they are welcome reminders of the true infinite resources of the world—love, kindness, and compassion. These qualities are the tools we may use to reconstruct the future of the planet. Because the longer we wait to modify our behavior and choose our future path, the more likely it is that the forces of nature set in motion by our excessive consumption for the past 150 years will make our choices for us. Starr Begley ast Thursday my husband and I made the Grand Trek from Upcountry to Lahaina. He’s a sales representative for a distributor of Hawaiiana products like calendars, magnets, books, music, stationary, shot glasses, beach towels, post cards, key chains, beach toys, photo albums, tote bags, aloha print pet supplies, bedding and vintage art prints. Basically, my husband—a local boy with blood ties tracing back to Kaumuali‘i, the Ali‘i Nui of Kauai and Ni‘ihau from 1794 to 1810, sells Hawai‘i to tourists. And he does a good job at it, too. Anyway, I was standing downstairs by the Wharf Cinema Center when the bearded preacher with the Bible who’s something of a Westside institution shouted at me. “Eh! American! Hello?” he yelled. Then he began lecturing me about the folly of my consumer, corporate ways. I became uncomfortable and angry. Not so much that he’s a well-known eccentric but because he mistook me for an American. For a haole. He thought I was at the Wharf buying stuff. In his mind, apparently only haole American tourists buy stuff at the Wharf, so that made me a tourist. And that’s what bothered me. American free market capitalism has a way of putting everything up for sale—even culture and traditions. If you have money, you can buy anything in America: goods, services and, yes, even respectability. Everything is for sale, if you can afford the price. For tourists, Front Street is understandably popular. The shirts and trinkets sold there are flashy and vibrant, but also friendly and non-controversial. They’re also mostly made in China. These tourists are being fed a delusion, I told my husband. All this crap has nothing to do with the real Hawai‘i. “But this is what Front Street is,” he said. “Even in the whaling days, I bet the business here catered to the visitors, the guys coming off the boats. This is a part of what Hawai‘i is. It’s just not ‘local.’”

L

f course, we ‘locals’ are also good at selling our own culture, though to a far lesser degree than those who cater to tourists. When I first walked into Maui Tropix on

O

Front Street, I found slogans, trinkets, shirts and stickers that directly related to my culture. The mottos “Maui Built,” “Respect the Culture,” “Up Country Built,” “Samoan” and “Portuguese” lined the walls. I asked the guy behind the counter–James Blanton a Caucasian from Florida, if they sold many “Grown here not Flown here” stickers to tourists. “Yeah, not really. I wouldn’t rock that sticker because I’m not, you know?” he said. “But with the tourists, you slap the word ‘Maui’ or put the Hawaiian island chain on it and they’ll buy it. Some products sell better at our Dairy Road store, some sell better here. It’s different for different parts of the island.” Maui Tropix (and Maui Built) came about to sell to us locals. “A bunch of years ago, Louis [Martin, the owner] saw that there was an untapped local market and he went for it,” he said. What’s more, he said that Maui Built products are only sold here—no other island. But there’s tons of Maui Built stickers out there, I said. Every time I go to Oahu I see trucks with them. “That’s kind of what makes it cool though, it’s exclusive,” he said. “You can only get it here on Maui. So every single thing of ours you see on Oahu? They came from one of our Maui stores.” Filings with the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs show Martin owns a wide variety of trademarks: “Big Island Built,” “Molokai Built,” “Kauai Built” and so forth. Martin declined to comment for this story, but Blanton said that as of now, the company isn’t thinking about exanding to the other islands, but “who knows what it’ll be like next year?” On the ride back up the hill, my husband and I discussed local-oriented brands and slogans we liked when we were kids. “I remember buying a skate board from Maui Tropix when it was in the mall before it changed,” he said. “I think I was in the fifth grade so it’s been around for a long time.”

Yeah, but that’s not what I remember as the real ‘local’ local stuff, I said. What about “Thrilla Gorilla” from T&C? Or that “Primo” guy who would say, “No can hea! Get bea in my ear!” Remember when guys would cut their shirts so short their stomachs would hang out? “I’d rather not.” You know, I added, what appeals to us now is a lot different than the stuff that we liked back in the day. How do you get from “Hang Loose” to “Ainokea?” “Ainokea”–a popular slogan today owned by Haku Applegate—is today used pretty much like the old “Hang Loose.” But the two slogans are actually very different. “Hang Loose” inspires people to just take it easy, while “Ainokea” (a variation of “I no care”) is far more nihilistic. Whatever, it seems to say. Just screw it. alking with people who moved here after

T

growing up on the mainland, I got the distinct impression that many view t-shirts and bumper stickers with “local” proclamations like “Country Pride,” “Central Pride” and “Westside Pride” as ignorant and detrimental to life here. Does wearing a shirt proclaiming pride in the area where you grew up make a local in some way wrong? Does celebrating one’s race by plastering it in huge type over your clothes make you divisive? On the flip side, what about those thatwonder if it is necessary to buy something to prove to others that we have pride in where we were born and how we were raised? My parents raised me to tolerate other races, cultures and points of view. Because of my upbringing, I’ve always been able to laugh at the Podagee, Filipino and haole jokes that are so popular with Hawai‘i comedians. I was thinking of this when I spoke with Rhaeshaud Perryman of Moke Action. His company takes familiar and popular logos, tweaks them just enough to pass copyright restrictions and then adds local flair. “The Filipino stuff sells good,” Perryman said. “We got this one shirt, looks like Ecko, but instead of the rhino we have a pig inside and it says, ‘Adobe Unlimited.’ There’s another one that looks like a Billabong, but says, “Bagaong.” The point, Perryman said, is to take a part of a culture–like certain Filipino foods–and turn them into something hip. “I am part Filipino,” he said. “And instead of ashamed, I become more aware and proud. Locals can take a stand and be proud of their culture.” I asked what he thought of people who become offended because of the way his products “sell” different races. “That’s their right,” he said. “But then I got freedom of speech. My stuff isn’t insulting because I’m not discriminating. I take what the culture has and use that–like the Samoans got kava, so we’re bringing in a shirt that looks like a green bottle but is says, ‘Samoan, All bus up on Kava.’ People from Hawai‘i buy it because they can relate to the things my slogans are saying.” y editor sees the phrase “Grown Here Not Flown Here” in political terms. “It’s almost anti-immigrant,” he said. “But that makes sense, given the fact that Hawai‘i is pretty much conquered territory.” Local people are proud of being born and raised in the islands, and because of that their point of view often differs from those who’ve moved here. To me, “Grown Here Not Flown Here” simply expresses that difference. Walking through 808 Nalu at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, I saw several T-shirts expressing a very different vibe: “Haole is Haole,” “Valley Isle Not Haole Isle,” “If you think you local think again,” “Don’t change our lifestyle change your area code” and “All balls no brains” (company official Lisa Apana did not comment for this story). In Wailuku, Requests Music carries stickers by Angrylocal.com (website has been parked as of press time) that say things like, “If you don’t like Hawaiians why the F*&ck did you move here?” and “It’s not the haoles I mind. It’s the fucking haoles.” According to store manager Justin Hogan, the stickers sell pretty well to locals and there has only been one instance where someone was so insulted by them that she vowed to never shop at the store again (she has since become a regular customer). Hogan stresses that the slogans are meant to be funny and that Requests tries to support locally made products. “It really depends what kine haole you talking about,” Bubz from B.U.B.Z Productions in Hali‘imaile said of the “It’s not the haoles” shirt. “Is it haoles that come from the mainland and buy up all the aina or the kine that come, respect the culture and become local? That shirt is wrong. But the one that says ‘Don’t change our lifestyle, change your area code’—that one I can agree with. If you don’t love it, move.” Nalu Foreman of Makawao wondered who would buy

M

the “If you don’t like Hawaiians, why the fu*&ck did you move here?” sticker. “To me, I wouldn’t put that on my car,” he said. “That kine stuff, leave to yourself cause everybody–the good, the bad, the humble— goin’ read the thing. If I felt that way I would tell it to the guy’s face.” Bubz and Foreman both agreed that the shirts proclaiming specific Westside or Upcountry heritage were positive. “You know, sometimes it can cause commotions,” Bubz said. “For the most part it’s representing where you from. It’s not a gang-related type of thing.” Foreman agreed. “It’s just you proud for be where you from,” he said. “No hassles. I get one shirt that says, ‘Lahaina Grown’ and, on the back, ‘And where you from?’ Just proud for be where you from.” Then I mentioned a shirt I saw at the T-Shirt factory at Ka‘ahumanu Center that promoted cock fighting–a celebrated, though illegal island past time. “You know, I no wear the shirt and I don’t know if it’s a good excuse, but I was raised with chicken,” Foreman said. “It put food on the table. Nowadays people are in it for the fad. But no excuse, my way or their way. People grew up with them.” ay Kalani Cabrido of the Automatic T-shirt Company and Das Nutz clothing in Maui Mall has been screening shirts since he was a kid. His family has been in the business–originally making shirts with more of a tourist appeal–for the past three decades. He’s seen the business of selling Hawai‘i to visitors and residents evolve—and not evolve. “The local market has seen some interesting changes over recent years,” he said. “Our designs appeal to the teenage to young adult market. Local people love their language, ‘Pidgin English’ as it reflects more than just words. Progress

R

will happen eventually here in Hawai‘i as change comes about, but the Pidgin English will forever remain and so much of our designs reflect that.” Cabrido hand-screens shirts with sayings like “Country Pride,” “Kahului, Central Pride,” “Hawaiian Homeland Security,” “My Daddy said No Ack Nutz,” “All ovah da Grandpa,” “Pilau? Wat dat…” as well as “Das Nutz”–an expression used when somebody does something either totally awesome or absolutely crazy. I asked Cabrido why the designs that appeal to locals today differ so much from the ones that were popular 20 years ago. “T-shirt design is kind of like music in that it changes when generations, interests and people change,” he said. “We’ve decided to just listen to what people are saying. Locals in general are happy people and like to say where they’re from. “I don’t think that we looked for or created a product that people would like,” he continued. “Instead, we just took what people say or do naturally and printed them on garments for people to wear. It is not unusual to see someone wearing a black long sleeve or hooded sweatshirt in a scorching 90-degree sunny day. People have many things to say and they choose their favorite T-shirt to do all the talking for them.” Local or not, that’s about as American as you can get.

ONO KINEGRINDS

Pizza Madness Just a comfortable place for pizza and beer It’s not that difficult to make a really good sports bar. There are, in the main, just three requirements. First, that it offer patrons a chance to watch sports. That means it has to have televisions. Not a department store’s worth of televisions—just enough to allow a couple different game selections at a time. Slick plasma screens are nice, but not required.

Pizza Madness 1455 S. Kihei Rd. 270-9888 Open Daily 10am - 10pm $

Second, the really good sports bar must be a good bar. That means a solid selection of beer and a comfortable atmosphere. The operative word in the last sentence is “comfortable”— some owners interpret this to mean “hang a lot of sports-related junk on the walls,” which is really cool, but not really comfortable. And lastly, the really good sports bar has great grinds. And in the U.S.,

14

MARCH 6, 2008

that translates into one word: pizza. Nothing makes watching March Madness, NBA games or even baseball spring training better than the simultaneous gulping of topping-heavy pizza slices. Which brings me to Pizza Madness, located in the Maui Dive Shop building in Kihei. Open for about two months on an island rapidly filling with sports bars, Pizza Madness is a really good sports bar. The place is rather dark and makes for the great TV viewing (there are three plasma screens placed throughout the restaurant). The walls hint at the heavy timbers of an old wooden ship, but the biggest surprise was the artworks that adorn the place. Giant sharks, octopi and fish hang above patrons’ heads, all carved from Styrofoam but looking more like bronze. It’s a nice touch that these apocryphal creatures are all hungrily consuming pizza slices. The Pizza Madness menu contains all the usual items for a place like this: hot and cold subs, spaghetti, Antipasto salads, garlic bread, chicken wings (a plate of about 10 wings, served with Buffalo sauce and ranch dressing, costs a mere $5) and pizza. There are four diameters, ranging from “Mini” to 16-inch. No surprises in the toppings (they have meatballs!) or the sauce (it’s handmade, as are all their sauces and dressings). The crust is thin, except at the edges where it thickens into a nice, soft handle. The other day my buddy Ron and I went after work. We ordered a plate of wings, a

16-inch pie (pepperoni and green peppers) and a couple beers (which come in 12-oz glasses or “tall” 22-oz steins). We watched a little basketball, drank a little beer (okay, we ordered the tall glasses) and consumed a great deal of pizza. Except for the fact that there were no Laker Girls sitting with us, it was a perfect evening. MTW

LIFE’S A BEACH In what will hopefully spark an island-wide trend, Life’s a Beach recently began offering customers free Wi-Fi service. I’m not exactly sure why someone sitting on their patio would want to surf the Internet instead of simply relaxing and enjoying the wonderful people-watching possibilities, but it’s a free country. 1913 S. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Starr Begley

San Francisco Ministry of Sound

Friday Night Fever Friday (Mar 7) 5-7:30 p.m. and beyond, Market & Vineyard Streets, Wailuku

Thursday (Mar. 6) at 9 p.m. at Casanova, Makawao [MUSIC] When I think of Spring Break, I think of booze, NHO’s at pool parties, boys without shirts and really good music. Basically, I visualize scenes from Girls Gone Wild. This year, Maui’s kicking off Spring Break 2008 a little differently with The San Francisco Ministry of Sound, featuring resident DJ Joey Mazzola of Club Ice. Mazola’s done shows in Detroit, San Francisco, Seattle, Cleveland, Chicago, Miami, Honolulu, Portland, Los Angeles, and Houston. He’ll team up with DJs Daniel J, Boomshot and JP from the Amphibeus Tungs for a night of superior hip-hop, funk, house and electro. www.myspace.com/joeymazzola

THURSDAY

[MUSIC/FOOD/ART] First Friday in Wailuku has been snowballing ever since it began several months ago. The biggie this month is a cameo by celebrity guest artist Mayor Charmaine Tavares, who will paint “something abstract” at Gallery Ha. I, for one, had no idea that the mayor painted. Even if she chokes, there’s still going to be lots of food and drink specials, street vendors, fine art work and entertainment. Down on the Requests end of Market Street, local band P.O.R.T.A.L and other DJs will play while the mellow blues-rock group Mojomana will set up by the Banyan tree. The Iao Theater always does something cool, too. And if for some ridiculous reason you can’t get your butt down to Main and Market that night, you can watch the festivities on www.wailukucam.com. Call 249-9710 for more info. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

Witching Hour

Cho-larious Saturday (Mar. 8), 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC

Friday (Mar 7), 10 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe, Lahaina [MUSIC] Although Maui’s reggae scene isn’t hurting for performers, we’re still lucky to have The Virgin Island’s Midnight stopping by to deliver their minimalist brand of conscious roots music to our little local venue. Whenever they tour they draw a massive crowd loyal to their authentic reggae vibes and lyrics. Maybe that’s because in a time when much reggae is over-dubbed, sound-processed and polished, these guys bring a raw, old school sound with hypnotic rhythms and intelligent lyrics that stand on their own without a lot of refining. Or maybe it’s because they’re known for putting on epic shows with really long, non-stop sets and heavy bass lines. Front man Vaughn Benjamin has an edgy vocal style that seems fresh and reminiscent of the great reggae artists of old. Either way, these guys will bring the house down. Tickets: $30. 667-7400. [JA]

DAY

[COMEDY] I don’t know why we in Hawai`i seem to identify with Margaret Cho so much. Maybe it’s because she grew up in San Francisco, which is, according to Cho, a melting pot of “hippies, ex-druggies, burnouts from the 60s, drag queens and Chinese people.” Just like Hawai`i, though I think we have less drag queens. On this tour, Cho returns to her stand-up roots. “I want to explore the nature of beauty,” she said. “What is funny and scary about it; why we often don’t feel beautiful because our society’s standards are so rigid and unattainable.” Only Cho could turn something so serioussounding into a laughing matter. Tickets: $47, $37, $27. 242-7469.

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Keeping Naughty Secrets A forgotten heist gets a welcome reminder The Bank Job is an old-fashioned heist picture based on a 1971 London robbery of a Lloyds Bank vault. Jason Statham plays Terry Leather, a petty criminal turned family man who jumps at the chance to take a surge in income when his childhood friend Martine (played by Saffron Burrows) hatches a bank job that’s too good to be true.

The Bank Job

★★★★★ Rated R/111 min.

Terry gathers together his old mates for the task of tunneling into the bank’s safety deposit vault without knowing Martine’s interest in the cryptic photographic contents of one specific box. Director Roger Donaldson is most famous for directing Tom Cruise in Cocktail, and he does a good job of capturing swinging London of the early ‘70s, while ratcheting up suspense in a story that exposes the layers of political scandal behind one of the biggest bank heists ever committed. Statham built his career as the go-toBrit-gangster on Guy Ritchie’s iconic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, so there’s a tendency to anticipate The Bank Job as a cruder punch-up picture than it is. Statham has evolved as an actor, even within the low ceiling of his typecast character, and brings a level of humility to his role.

Terry has a family to provide for, and he trusts his ability to gauge his actions off of the deceptively attractive Martine, whose knack for keeping secrets is more transparent than she imagines. Early on Martine is taken away by police for smuggling drugs before being rescued by her MI5 lover Tim Everett (Richard Lintern) to recruit a team of thieves from her old East End neighborhood to execute a tacitly government-endorsed heist in exchange for keeping her out of jail. For 30 years the British Government exercised a “D-Notice” gag order on the press to contain details surrounding the so-called “walky-talky bank job,” for which no suspects were ever indicted. The heist got its name from the intrusion of a ham radio operator who listened in on a conversation between a lookout and the robbers as they bagged over 30 million pounds worth of cash and jewelry. But what gives The Bank Job its zing is the reason the House of Parliament ordered its MI5 officers to quietly arrange the robbery to obtain incriminating sex photos taken of an unnamed royal princess by a radical black extremist leader called Michael X (Peter De Jersey). The inclusion of photos of a Parliament judge engaging in some tame BDSM only added to the necessity for a cover-up. Screenwriters Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais have successfully endeavored to bring color to a gray area of British history by including the story’s equal parts of humor, drama, and tragedy that spanned from the empty pockets of a bunch of working class blokes to the corridors of British power. The Bank Job takes liberties with history, but probably far less than were taken at the time of the infamous Baker Street crime. This might make the Downing Street Memos look tame, but there’s a lot more humor here. MTW

Strength in Numbers Jamallad spreads peace and unity through his new album He was reminiscing about the taro root and coconut palms from his home in West Africa. “It seemed natural to me, if I was going to live anywhere away from Africa it would be here,” Jamallad, a musician, told me. “The road to Hana is just like driving to my village, in the same jungle. I call it the driveway to Hana.” Born Lucien Kouassi in a small village in Ivory Coast, Jamallad’s life has been a musical journey that’s led him around the world. Today he lives on Maui and recently recorded Global Citizen, an album of original world music. Jamallad said that when he was young, an American Peace Corps volunteer and folk singer musical talent discovered him. She taught him to play guitar and read music before lobbying to get him admitted into an exclusive West African music school. His instructors and mentors encouraged him to pursue scholarships and classical education in Italy and France before finally obtaining a music degree at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Even as a young man, Jamallad says he knew his musical purpose was to spread a message of peace and unity. Near the end of his college career, he cast off his given name and became known as Jamallad, an African word meaning “togetherness.” Along with his band, he traveled up and down the east coast, playing at universities, small venues and spring break parties. Later he and his band moved to Los Angeles, where he spent a decade creating and recording music, performing and teaching classical guitar. Ultimately, one of his students led him to Maui, where he believes he’s found his greatest opportunity yet. But his move has not been without pain. Not long after arriving, he suffered a fall down a long, steep slope while working as a landscaper. The accident left him with a severe and painful spinal cord injury, resulting in little mobility, no income, health insurance or a place to live. Soon after the accident, Jamallad went to the Makawao Public Library to promote himself as a guitar teacher. There Chetanaa Zoeller sat down at a table beside him. At the time, Zoeller’s son, Suntana Villanueva, was nine years old and an aspiring bassist. They talked a while about lessons before she noticed his self-conscious limp. She offered to exchange bodywork for music lessons for her son. A partnership was born, leading to friendship and then romance. Zoeller

helped to heal Jamallad using naturopathic remedies, supporting him through a very invasive surgery and, to Jamallad, the most therapeutic method of all–creating music. They worked together to record an eclectic album of high-energy songs. Jamallad wrote the music–a difficult to classify mix of African roots, folk, classical rock and reggae sounds–while they poured themselves into writing positive, constructive and humanitarian lyrics. Several talented Maui musicians offered their gifts into the mix with bass, keyboard and backup vocals. Even the young Villanueva contributed with a spoken word piece on the track “Global Citizen.” Each track on Global Citizen has a different flavor. “Jamallad” seems to have the most reggae influences, while “Give Love a Chance”–a song written for Zoeller–has more of a catchy, pop sound. Most of the songs have at least a few French lyrics, which is Jamallad’s native tongue. “There’s a proverb in Africa that says, ‘It doesn’t matter how long the branch stays in the river, it will never turn into a crocodile,’” Jamallad told me. “Even after years in Europe and the U.S., I haven’t lost my accent, and that’s the African element that stays with me.” The official release date for Global Citizen is Mar. 25, but people can get their hands on the album now at Ono Gelato and Morning Glory Coffee in Paia, Requests Records in Wailuku, Lahaina Music and Kihei Music & Video. CAERIEL CRESTIN SIGN.LANGUAGE.ASTROLOGY@GMAIL.COM

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Your unpredictability is what makes you exciting, but also frustrating. Take this week, for instance. How is anyone supposed to guess how you’ll react to this new situation? There are times when you desperately avoid trying anything new, and other chapters where all you want to do is try new things—during those, anything that seems like something you’ve done before bores and galls you to the point where you can’t be bothered. We don’t expect you to know how you’ll feel in a month, and whether you’ll be excited or petrified about the prospect of a new challenge. However, can you please let us know how you’d feel about it this week?

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You might feel a bit unpopular this week, but you’re not. Au contraire—people are looking for you everywhere but where you are. You’re a hard one to keep track of at times, and most of the people trying to get a piece of you will be just playing catch-up, all without you even knowing it. Don’t be bitter. You’re loved. It’s just that the people who love you can’t always quite keep up. Accept that they’re five steps behind you and likely to stay that way for now. Try to feel their love anyway. Alternatively, you could just slow down, but really, once you think about it—what’s the point?

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Let your current issues with someone be water under the bridge. That’s certainly not fair to you, as those who’ve wronged you ought to suffer consequences for their actions, and you deserve a right to speak your mind. But I suggest letting it all go, nevertheless, fair or not. The problem here is that if you get your say, and they get their comeuppances, this situation will actually worsen. In other words, your misery will continue and be compounded. Biting your tongue now, and forgiving and forgetting, will ultimately be a small price to pay for the peace of mind that would otherwise elude you.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Spell it out. Whether it’s love or hate, praise or criticism, whatever you’re trying to express won’t be clear unless you forget subtlety altogether and just make it as obvious as possible. If you insist on tact and diplomacy here, or simply trust someone to be able to read between the lines, you’ll end up feeling frustrated, because they can’t (or won’t). I know you like being clever, and prefer to assume that people are intelligent enough to grasp a concept without being beat over the head with it, but in this case that’s too much to expect. Whip out your club and start knocking skulls with it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) It’s good to have general rules and guidelines but please remember that adhering to them slavishly will only result in a merely satisfactory experience. The best aspects of life exist just outside of the boundaries defined by the rules. That’s why they’re called exceptional. Breaking the rules is not only fun, it’s actually the only way to get to what (and who) you really want. Go ahead and stick to your general principles, most of the time—but make sure there’s at least a little window in your life for the exceptional to shine through, and perhaps even climb in.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) It’s time once again to acknowledge, thank, and lavish adoration (as only you can) upon those who support you. I know you like to think of yourself as independent, self-sufficient, and the rock upon which everyone else depends, but quite often the opposite is true; you’re supported in many ways by the people around you. Sometimes this isn’t so obvious, because they bite their tongues, let things slide, and just quietly fill in the gaps and clean up the messes you leave behind. I hope you’ve noticed them at least a little. This week, make sure you thank them, too.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Go ahead and share with everyone that song that’s stuck in your head. Go in after someone’s done something and do it better. While you’re at it, nag people for not adhering to the kind of discipline you insist upon for yourself. In other words, you might as well be as annoying as possible, because people are going to take whatever you’re up to this week in the worst possible way, regardless, and find reasons to be irritated by it. That’s right, you can’t win. What you can do, however, is find humor in all of it, and ultimately let it all roll off your back.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) There’s a difference between a little “harmless” flirtation and the kind of behavior that might lead to something, especially if that something is outside of the bounds of your current arrangement(s). Walking the line between the two is a dangerous proposition for you this week, because it’s likely to be a faint, hard-to-follow distinction. It’d be all too easy for you to end up on the wrong side of it. I know you hate to be a spoilsport and that it’s very hard for you to turn down the charm, but I suggest you rein that stuff in for the time being; the consequences otherwise are too steep a price to pay.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re sensitive enough to perceive and understand another’s emotional quandaries, even if you don’t respect or sympathize with them. In fact, you may even have contempt that they’re being such sad sacks about a situation that, for you, would be no big deal. You’re cut from a different cloth, though, and have a whole different (much less obvious) set of vulnerabilities. I suggest that even if you can’t exercise compassion for these hypersensitive freaks, you at least practice restraint, and leave them to their processing and fretting without adding a layer of scorn on top of their already overwhelming woes.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) When you want to, you can get almost as much done in a day as any Virgo or Capricorn. The rest of the time, however, you’re a virtual paragon of low-key laziness, accomplishing less (with more enjoyment) than even the most under-motivated Taurus. Your problem, as I see it, is getting into the right mode at the right times, or knowing which is called for when. Sometimes there’s really nothing better to do than just enjoy life and play the grasshopper. Other times it’s more appropriate to be the worker ant and get shit done. This, my dear, is one of the latter weeks, when your marvelous laziness must be resisted. Go into high production mode, so you can maximize your downtime later.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

COMING SOON!

You’re good at compartmentalizing different aspects of your existence, and to some extent this is healthy. Smart Capricorns don’t bring their work home with them, for example. But you can take this too far, and be too rigid in defining the distinctions between different facets of your life. That’s not always a good thing, because a little thoughtful and careful mixing can enrich and enliven your existence. This week, if someone from one of the worlds you occupy expresses an interest in stepping across the line into another, at least consider inviting or helping them along.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Your problem is in not properly anticipating change. Consequently you’re unduly bitter when circumstances mutate, perhaps becoming less ideal than they were. Please remember: This is always going to happen. Keep that in mind this week. You may feel like you have it all (or at least a lot of it). Don’t be scared, but you won’t have all this forever. Some of it, at least, is going to go away, or become something you don’t want anymore. That’s not a reason to freak out, or fret. It’s quite simply cause to enjoy it as fully as you can right now, so when you lose it, you won’t feel like you missed out on anything.

I probably shouldn’t admit it, but I don’t get out much. Those of you with kids, husbands, multiple jobs–are undoubtedly feeling me on this. For those female readers who remembered to take their birth control and are still casting their nets every weekend into the sea of single men, I have three words: Yay for you. But this past weekend we actually went to one of the many events that I get the chance to write about week after week. The Barry Fest, a benefit for Mana‘o Radio, was going on at the Old Maui Zoo Amphitheater and–low and behold–it was an all-ages, family-friendly event. And by family-friendly, I mean there were no coolers full of alcohol and people chain-smoking Misty ultra-thins. Kids in tow, we descended upon Barry Fest like the Upcountry bumpkins that we are–full of excitement, awe and way too many layers of clothing. We got there at 1:30. The Voodoo Suns were playing and people were grooving. It turns out my son (age two) is a huge fan. I would never have guessed him for a political rock guy. There was a wide variety of food–everything from quinoa salad to teriyaki chicken. The lines were long, but nobody seemed to mind. The vibe was very Rainbow Bridge. It kind of made we want to take my shirt off and set the boobs free. I haven’t hugged or been hugged by that many people in one day since, well, ever. The first person that we ran into was Master jeweler David Sacco, who designed my totally custom, super awesome wedding bands. While talking to Sacco, we ran into writer Jill Engledow. Jill just came out with a new book “Island Life 101: A Newcomer’s Guide to Hawaii” that’s actually sitting in the home of Maui Time Calendar Editor Jessica Armstrong awaiting review as we speak. Jill also happens to be the woman that my husband and his dad lived with for years when he was a kid. We said our hellos while I secretly harbored fantasies of what life would be like if she actually became my stepmother-in-law. I’m thinking awesome. About the same time that LAWA took the stage and while sharing a banana split with my daughter, I spotted Teri Lawrence from On the Upside with Teri on KAOI. She was wearing a “Save the baby seals” t-shirt and had a very large white bird perched on her shoulder even though there was a sign at the gate that specified that no pets were allowed besides service dogs. While LAWA was tearing it up on sage, the hubby and I discussed my probable attraction to guitarist Pete Sebastion. What can I say? He plays really good guitar and has a wild mane of hair. Squinting, the hubby realized that he went to school with lead singer Kahala. “Went to school or went to school with her?” I asked. You have to clarify these things in my marriage. By the time Kathy “Tita” Collins took the stage to introduce the Mana‘o Radio Orchestra, the kids were getting hot and whiny and I knew that it was time for us to hele on out. I tried to hunt down Collins to introduce myself as “Starr–you know, the nonIrish non-Hippie with the column who calls you with weird questions from Maui Time” but wasn’t able to. She’s a busy lady! With cute bangs. I think those are new. While looking for Collins, I ran into John Cruz, who was chatting with Marty Dread. I notched another hug on my belt and introduced him to the family. My son gave him five and said, “Hi, Uncle.” Kahala from LAWA got “nice to meet you” hugs from the fam and she kissed all the kids as a way of introduction while she and the hubby talked about middle school. On the way out, I spotted Jamallad and the Sisters Grimm who were waiting in line behind us to see Happy Dan, the balloon guy. Overall it was the kind of day that made me feel thankful to live on a beautiful island amid talented people. Also, I was glad my daughter didn’t blurt out, “[Grandma] said you have a crush on that guy with the CD you make us listen to all the time” until we got to the car. Cruz probably figures as much already.
