When Helicopters Crash Barely a week before two sightseeing helicopters crashed just four days apart on Kauai, killing five and injuring three, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) criticized the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for not properly conducting safety checks of tour companies. In Maui County alone, NTSB reports show 16 sightseeing helicopter crashes since 1985. While that’s a tiny number compared to the total number of sightseeing flights, three of those crashes–nearly 20 percent–took place in the last year alone:

Nov. 12, 1996: A McDonnell Douglas 369D operated by Alika Aviation rolls over after landing in Hana. None of the five aboard are injured.

Jan. 29, 2006: An Alika Aviation Eurocopter lands hard in a Kahului field shortly after takeoff. No one aboard is injured.

Feb. 28, 1994: An Aerospatiale AS350D operated by Papillon Helicopters loses power and makes an emergency landing in Huelo. None of the five aboard are injured.

Jan. 10, 2006: Six people are injured—one seriously—when a Sunshine Helicopters Eurocopter loses engine power and crashes on steep slope near Kaupo. Jan. 5, 2006: Following a loss of engine power, a Blue Hawaiian Eurocopter does a hard landing in Honokohau Valley. The six people aboard escape injury. Oct. 14, 2005: An Alika Aviation Hughes 369D helicopter crashes at Kahului Airport after its tail rotor fails. None of the five aboard are injured. July 21, 2000: Seven people die aboard a Blue Hawaiian Aerospatiale AS helicopter when it slams into a cloud-covered mountain in Iao Valley. April 21, 2000: A Sunshine Helicopters Eurocopter makes a hard landing in Iao Valley following a loss of engine power. None of the six aboard are injured.

Wake-up Call What to do now that we’re at the end of oil “We spent our wealth acquired in the twentieth century building an infrastructure of daily life that will not work very long into the twenty first century. It’s worth repeating that suburbia is best understood as the greatest misallocation of resources in the history of the world.” So says James Howard Kunstler in his 2005 book, The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of Oil and Other Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty First Century. Kunstler will speak on Maui Wednesday, March 21 as part of the Focus Green lecture series, sponsored by Dowling Company. While the 6 p.m. presentation at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center is free, the public should know that there will be a hefty price to pay for our world economy and social construct’s delusional reliance on cheap oil. Since stepping away from corporate journalism in 1975, Jim Kunstler has penned nine novels and three non-fiction works, including his treatise on the downfalls of suburban sprawl design, The Geography of Nowhere. Besides his current incarnation as an author addressing energy, geo-politics and economic issues, he is also a prolific oil painter. In The Long Emergency, Kunstler presents a sobering, academic study of the history of oil, its economics and politics, the meaning of “peak oil,” and why the fossil fuel bonanza was a one-time deal. “Beyond peak, all bets are off about civilization’s future,” Kunstler wrote. World oil prices soared in 1973, with the OPEC embargo, and again in 1979 during the Iran hostage crisis. The industry’s response was a huge push in oil exploration, assuming that high prices were here to stay. But by 1986, world oil prices collapsed. West Texas crude dropped from $31.75 a barrel to $10. A 15-year glut was on. Concurrently, a free-market global economy arose, promising something for everyone, and all at discounted prices. The “oligarchial corporations” which operated globalism made piles of money, while systematically undermining local economies and communities. Kunstler defines corporations as a “group enterprise given the legal status of a ‘person’ with ‘rights’, but in fact devoid of any human qualities of ethics, humility, mercy, duty, or loyalty that would constrain those rights.” In the American sprawl model of

The last time a licensee won an appeal was May 2004, when Judge Joel August ordered a do-over after the Adjudication Board convicted the Kahului Ale House of over-service. Since then, that order has become a favorite of defense attorneys—like those representing Casanova—who were fighting over-service charges. But in response to Cardoza’s recent ruling, First Deputy Corporation Counsel Tracy Fujita Villarosa told the board that Casanova’s attempt to use the Ale House order was foolhardy. “An old order from another judge is not precedent-setting,” she said at the Mar. 1 hearing with more than a little smugness. As if “precedent” was a concept taken seriously at the Adjudication Board. In any case, rather than discuss the merits of the appeal or Cardoza’s rejection, the board itself seem preoccupied with the whole idea that some judge might reject their hard work.

Board member Glenn Kunitake asked if a judge could reverse an Adjudication Board decision or merely send it back to them, as he did in the 2004 Ale House matter (that board responded by tossing the whole case). When Villarosa responded that a judge could do either, numerous board members suddenly sat up. “He can?!” they said. But then Villarosa tempered their concern by saying the County could then appeal that decision. “I can’t think of one instance when it’s been reversed,” Silva said. “[Cases have] been remanded, but never reversed, that I can remember.”

HOME SWEET HOMES Can you imagine how great it must be to be A&B? How much easier it is to get up in the morning knowing that you’re one of the most powerful land owners and developers in the state who happens to share a seat on the Maui Chamber of Commerce with the publisher of The Maui News? Couldn’t say it was a surprise when The Maui News ran the front page, above-the-fold story “A&B files for new residential project in Kihei” on Mar. 7. The company is years away from breaking ground, but that didn’t stop the paper from giving maximum play to A&B Vice President Grant Chun–A&B’s representative on the Chamber–and his wish to build “68 acres of multifamily units” (condos), “25 acres of single-family residences” and “1.4 acres of commercial space” near the intersection of Pi`ilani and Mokulele in North Kihei. The amount of money A&B would make off such a project is conspicuously absent from the story, but it must be quite a bit, given the righteousness of the last line in the story: “But he [Chun] said A&B’s preference would be to provide housing aimed for the local resident sooner rather than later.”

FOR HE’S A JOLLY GOODFELLOW Goodfellow Brothers moves up a notch because in the very same story, they’re mentioned as the contractor doing the $22.5 million project to widen and realign the whole Mokulele-Pi`ilani intersection. This work is so important that without it there’s no way A&B could bring about the grand residential development plans cited above. Right now, as residents are only too aware, the intersection is confusing and nearly always jammed with traffic. But once Goodfellow finishes its work, A&B’s Grant Chun says the intersection will have even more “capacity and efficiency,” according to The Maui News. MTW

In a move that makes your typical “corporate welfare” handouts pale into irrelevance, Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) and the Hawai`i Department of Education have signed a “memorandum of agreement” to start funneling public schoolchildren on Maui through visiting cruise ships so they can learn about the cruise industry and, presumably, eventually work there. Oh, wait—there’s no “presumably” about it: “By exposing these students at an early age to potential careers on cruise ships, we hope to excite their interests in such studies as science, mathematics, history, language, engineering, mechanics and much more,” NCL Hawai`i operations director Robert Kritzman said in a story posted today on the Pacific Business News website. I’m sorry— beyond enjoying a truly bitchin’ field trip, schoolchildren are also going to learn about history and science? Excuse me? Cruise ships are floating hotels, staffed by poorly paid individuals from all over the world—guess that’s where language comes into play—who work as stewards, bartenders, servers and dishwashers. We’re talking The Love Boat here, people! I used to watch that show when I was a kid, and I don’t recall learning much about engineering or science, though I did often wonder what legal nuance of Maritime Law made that goof Merrill Stubing a captain. Looks like the slowing of the housing market across the country that’s been talked about in all the big financial pages and business programs has finally come to Maui. Thank God. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, February 2007 saw a drop in the median price of a single-family home from the same period last year. In February 2006, the median price sat at the nosebleed level of $669,500, but last month the median price dropped to just $645,000. Just $645,000! What a steal! Of course, the median price for a condominium rose rather sharply—up to $560,000 in February 2007 from a mere $430,100 in February 2006, which partially explains why Realtors Association of Maui boss Terry Tolman used the word “healthy” to describe the Maui housing market in the Advertiser story. Considering how the median single-family home price remains at slightly more than 10 times the local median income, it’s hard to see how Tolman justifies

Lingle: “NO CHANGES”

Associated Press reported in today’s Maui News and Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Let’s say, as her spokesman Lenny Klompus does, that the whole thing had nothing to do with the $178,864 profit she made off the sale. Let’s say Klompus is correct when he insists the timing of the sale had nothing to do with pending legislation that will tax the hell out of people who flip houses in exactly that fashion. And let’s even say that Klompus is absolutely correct that the only reason she sold the condo and then bought another in the same complex—this one costing $614,055—is because she wanted a bigger place (even though Honolulu property records suggest both condos are 1,287 square feet, with two bedrooms and two baths). Even if we agree to all that, there’s still the question of why she failed to report the sale last month on the Disclosure of Financial Interests form she filed with the state Ethics Commission, which is posted on the commission’s website. The AP is much too forgiving at this point, choosing only to quote Ethics Commission Executive Director Dan Mollway as saying Lingle did report the sale back on Aug. 25, 2006 on a candidate’s form that isn’t posted on the commission’s website. This is bogus—the whole point of having these yearly forms and posting on the web is so

So Mayor Charmaine Tavares says it’s going to take about two years—maybe a bit more, perhaps less—to stabilize the cliffs along Pi`ilani Highway as it runs from Ulupalakua to Kipahulu and reopen the road, says today’s Maui News. The road’s been closed since the big Oct. 15 earthquake knocked even more rocks and boulders than usual onto the road, all but cutting off Kaupo and Kipahulu from the outside world. What’s more, county officials insist they can reopen the road without dynamiting more rocks or dropping mesh nets over the cliff sides, though it’s hard to see how. That road was rugged and treacherous before the quake, and photos of it now show that it eerily resembles one of those winding passes through the Hindu Kush. Oh, and hey: great idea putting up a sign this week for the tourists driving into Ulupalakua announcing that the road is blocked long before it reaches Hana or even Kaupo. Now visitors won’t need to pester the good people at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store about getting to Hana—so why didn’t the county put it up back in October when they first closed the road?

OH WELL In January in Austin, Texas, a 45minute delay occurred between when a nighttime 911 call was made to report a building on fire and the time firefighters arrived. According to the Austin American-Statesman, the delay could have been due to uncertainty about the seriousness of the “fire,” in that the building in question, with smoke spewing from it, was Bert’s Bar B-Q, which has smoke spewing from it frequently. The building was destroyed.

HOT CASE Robert “Drew” Stephenson, on trial in Fort Worth, Texas, in January for “torturing” an ex-girlfriend, acknowledged her severe burns but said it wasn’t his fault. He said the two were having sex in a house that had no heat, and to warm himself, he ran the flames of a lantern up and down his arm. According to him, his girlfriend said she wanted to be warmed up with flames, too. He was convicted, and in February, after four other women testified that he had beaten them, was sentenced to life in prison.

In February, two anti-whaling activists (one from Australia, one from Los Angeles), intending to attack a Japanese whaling ship near Antarctica with a bottle of acid and a smoke bomb, got lost in the fog in their small dinghy and were rescued with the help of several boats, including the whaler. However, as soon as the activists were safe, one thanked the Japanese crew but said, “I guess we’re back on schedule, and we’ll be pursuing you again.” Shortly after

He raises the question of whether we’ve exceeded the carrying capacity of this planet so egregiously that no ventures into alternative energy will allow us to keep the current game going. “Fossil fuels allowed the human race to operate highly complex systems at gigantic scales,” he wrote. “Renewable energy sources are not compatible with those systems and scales.” Kunstler believes the future U.S. economy is not likely to center on high-tech, information, services, space travel, tourism or finance, but on farming. But while succumbing to modernity, we have forgotten the sustainable living practices that date back thousands of years. I recently spoke with Kunstler at his Saratoga Springs home in Upstate New York: MAUI TIME WEEKLY: For an island community largely dependent on the importation of oil, food, building materials and tourist dollars, what is an important first step? JAMES KUNSTLER: Well, to recognize our assumptions we carry with us about the way things will work in the years ahead are likely to be wrong. Vis-à-vis energy systems and our ability to run the mechanisms of our current economy. Your opening chapter is titled, “Sleepwalking Into The Future.” What will it take us to collectively wake up? That’s a really good question. It seems that the American public has not felt the pain of the oil economy yet. The current scene is that the pain is exported to Third World countries, while advanced nations are getting a free ride. But soon advanced nations will be competing with each other for dwindling resources. When that happens, it may lead to even more delusional thinking. We may act desperately, not sensibly, in the face of these things. What is likely to be the initial effect on our tourist economy as resources dwindle and prices soar? The bottom line is that, clearly, Hawai`i will not be able to rely on the tourist economy of the past 40 to 50 years. Continued investments into the infrastructure of that economy may turn out kind of tragic. It’s hard to be optimistic about the U.S. commercial airline industry with more than a quarter of their operating costs being jet

What about the local push for biofuels? I believe that cars will have a diminished presence in our lives, no matter what they run on. It’s understandable that there is wishful thinking to get something for nothing, to change the fuel we’re using for happy motoring. But it’s in the realm of fantasy. We’ll be disappointed by what alternative fuels can actually do for us. It also creates competition for land use for food.

What are your feelings on President George W. Bush’s trip to Brazil to forge an ethanol alliance, along with his treatment by protesters down there? Well, ethanol is a racket. It’s part of a wish to keep things running on whatever means possible to prop up our investments. We know a lot more about the energy picture and our place in it. Delusional thinking is fantastically high. They are prisoners to a paradigm they can’t escape, that things will run the way they did in 1994. One impediment to getting with the reality program is the belief that energy and technology are the same. The idea that if you run out of one, you just plug in the other. Commerce, farming, food, transportation, manufacturing… My view is that we must make other arrangements, including how we inhabit the landscape. MTW

or the last four years Keoki Kalani has served as the Hana Youth Center’s Executive Director. Recently I was fortunate enough to spend several days working with him and the youth who attend the center each day after school lets out. Near the end of my time there we talked about the Youth Center, the Hana community and the Hana way of life:

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Hana embraces a strong sense of community. Let’s start by discussing your ideas of what makes up a community. KEOKI KALANI: I guess my idea of a perfect community would be one that practiced healthy behaviors and had the resources to help those who needed change. A community that had healthy beliefs and held positive standards would be great. And community that supported all families in need as well as supporting the school system would be very good as well. Do you feel that the Hana community is unique in any way? Hana is unique in that it supports many Hawaiian values. This is visible in everyday life where families look out for one another. Many live and practice aloha and try very hard to protect this lifestyle. Hana has its own Aloha Week festivities and it is a community that is culturally strong. I believe the people of Hana have a sense of belonging. I understand that Hana Youth Center has been open for nearly 21 years. Since you began working there four years ago how have you seen it change? I am certain that there have been changes with each directorship along the way. Prior to starting at HYC I really wasn’t that involved with the center so I can only evaluate what I’ve done to try and improve. I do appreciate hearing that the community is pleased with the center and I feel privileged to be a part of this organization. Can you describe some of these changes? We are most fortunate to be a part of the County of Maui budget. I believe there are nine youth centers currently in Maui County that receive funding as well. Therefore, as not to take advantage of the fact that a part of our operating expenses may be part of a budget drawn from taxpayer’s money, a big responsibility to make the most of what is received and not waste anything as well as showing results is important. HYC works with other organizations and agencies to develop better programs as well. Receiving support is great, lending support to others serves as an example for our youth. How many kids attend HYC? We currently have 136 members with an average of 25 youth attending daily.

How do you believe the Youth Center benefits the youth? It’s a safe place where youth can come and hang out versus getting in trouble somewhere else. HYC offers a setting that is fun; free from the influence of tobacco, drugs and violence. HYC supports positive interactions; it reinforces positive Hawaiian values and encourages youth to improve health, moral and social habits. Our mission statement is “E kipaipai i na ‘opio i na hana ku i ka pono mai keia manawa a mau loa aku,” which translates as “Inspiring youth to make positive impressions that last a lifetime.” HYC tries to make positive lasting impressions that will hopefully build self-esteem and assist our youth in making wise choices now and in the future. Can you describe some of the successes that you’ve witnesses in your time with HYC? We are still open! Other than that, I’ve seen members graduate, some have gone on to college and some have begun careers. I’ve seen families of members participate more in the community. I believe more successes are yet to come. How do you measure success? Right now I think it is through participation and by feedback from the community. While we are providing positive information, reinforcement and reminders, I believe that it is not until later will we see if everything kicks in. Maybe one day a former member will say they were inspired by something that they experience at HYC. Are there any failures that you would like to share? I’ve heard where youth may have done something wrong at home and for punishment they were restricted from coming to the center. It’s unfortunate that at times HYC is being used as the leverage to control youth behavior. How has the Youth Center helped to integrate the community at large? HYC along with a collaboration of others has encouraged family strengthening in a program called Hana Pa`a where families are taken camping and taught family strengthening skills. Within the `ohana, families are able to bond, families bond with families, organizations bond with organizations and it grows. What would you consider to be the biggest challenge directly regarding the youth and their positive growth? Motivation seems to be an ongoing challenge. It is so easy for youth to pass up positive opportunities. To get youth to buy into something that requires effort on their part, to broaden their prospective on views and to build confidence are things we are trying to instill.

I was involved with your monthly event called Movie in the Park. Would you like to explain a little about how that works? Three organizations have joined together in this effort. With `Ohana Makamae, which is the Hana Family Resource Center and Hale Hulu Mamo, Hana’s Senior Center, we are able to provide a family strengthening activity once a month that is affordable. The movie is selected and voted based on values and it is shown for free. We also provide a balanced dinner plate and other concession items for a reasonable cost, which our attendees appreciate. Prior to the movie, a small forum is available to either showcase maybe a film a youth created, have a short entertainment segment or the sharing of concerns and happenings that are going on at each of our organizations. There is a lot of energy that is required to put this together and I am grateful for my co-agencies because we would not be able to do it as well by ourselves. Sometimes we make a small profit and sometimes we don’t. However, this teaches collaboration, teamwork and cooperation and we have incorporated parts of this effort in our youth programming. I just hope it sets an example for the future.

We also visit community members who may be in the hospital. A current movie could be included as well. Parents are provided with our jam-packed itinerary so as not to worry when we roll in close to midnight. Our effort is to provide something memorable, something so that they will say, “I learned something new.” Are there particular activities that the youth prefer over others? Definitely. However, it is equally important for youth to learn from the programs that promote responsibility as well. Sometimes we have repackaged the programs so that they appear more appealing. I understand that you and your coworkers organize field trips. Are there any in particular that you would like to share? So as not to waste a whole day, I believe that for many in Hana, Kahului trips are targeted to get what you need and return to Hana and still have time in the day to do other things. We have created quarterly field trips that encompass things that erase the rushed time factor to return to Hana and we do things that are out of the “going to the other side” norm. Participation in this is based on having a good standing. We try to include things that are educational, cultural and inspirational. Trips normally begin very early. Being content can make you complacent and we can always improve. Youth involvement in a monthly anti-drug rally was beginning to dwindle. Kids couldn’t relate how their participation helped any. So arrangements were made for individuals from the community who were in recovery to speak to the youth. Our members were able to hear first hand from an aunty or uncle, a big cousin, how their participation inspired them and reminded them to stay clean. These speakers

Several years ago I met a couple who were visiting Hana, after touring our center they asked if the youth would appreciate a donation of shoes from their company: onlineshoes.com. An agreement was formed and this has been the fourth year HYC has been able to distribute shoes to the membership and to our senior center. Our friends at onlineshoes.com believed in what we were doing and we are most grateful. This past year we put together a slide show set to music, which was sent to them and they shared it with their employees. I hope it provided that tingly feeling in their na`au [gut] that their shoes have given our youth members. Does the community seem appreciative? This Seattle-based company has embraced our community and they have touched our lives. Hopefully we have shown appreciation by sharing with them what we have done as well. Maybe one day our youth may have the means to help others less fortunate. They definitely see a positive example today. Are there any major changes that you foresee taking place within the Hana community that would directly affect the HYC? The cost of living in Hana continues to soar. Grants seem more complicated as well. It is our hope one day to have an endowment where we could operate from the interest and not have to spend as much time searching for operating funds. On another note, the school system continues to affect the center. This is our first year in a year-round schedule. Hana School also has an optional Friday program which affects parents and youth as well. Are the youth benefiting from it? Time will tell. What makes you most proud? I was surprised this past Aloha Week by being bestowed the Hana community’s Tiny Malaikini Mea Kokua Award. Previous recipients have inspired me from when I was little. I hope I can do the same for our youth today. MTW

It was awesome. When I was in kindergarten I became totally obsessed with Hello Kitty paraphernalia and shrimp tempura. Shirokiya’s was the one place you could go to get both.

A few years ago, Shirokiya’s closed and Maui was left to scavenge Asian bentos and My Little Star pen sets from other places. Not that you can’t find good bentos and Hello Kitty other places on Maui. C’mon, it’s Maui. We’re like 60something percent Asian dominated here. Okay, technically it’s like 30 percent, but I don’t think they took Kahului and Wailuku into consideration when they polled. So like 60 percent... at least downtown. This major cultural problem that was caused by Shirokiya’s packing up and closing was solved when TJ’s Warehouse Outlet and Bento and Catering opened in the Maui Chemical building in Wailuku. Yes, the Maui Chemical building. In the Maui Chemical building you can

buy massive amounts of cleaner, paper products, office supplies and (surprise!) Hello Kitty and bentos. Yippee! Wait, I’m not five anymore. TJ’s Warehouse has bento specials Monday through Friday. On Mondays you’ll find cold udon, chicken katsu donbori and oyaku donbori. Tuesdays are hamburger steak, yakisoba combos and won ton days. Wednesdays are all about the chicken hekka, pork tofu and somen salad, while Thursday rocks the Hawaiian plate, beef stew and teriyaki meatball. Fridays are my personal favorite: tempura and butterfish bento, Korean chicken and tofu patties. Greasy, delicious and wickedly satisfying. On any given day you’ll find the usual local favorites like yakitori chicken, kalbi short ribs, maki and cone sushi, musubi, corned beef patties, mochiko chicken, chow fun, shrimp tempura (Hooray!), mac salad, teriyaki hot-dogs and more. This ain’t no health food store—weight watchers can just stay far, far away. This is dining for the hungry, the non-calorie counter, the flavor lover. This is local food at its finest. There is an outside area where you can sit and eat your lunch, though it seems most people order their food and then dash back to work. TJ’s Warehouse also does a lot of catering—people can order food by the half or full pan. They also offer a “Five Course Menu” for as little as 10 people. Then there’s their great supply of Asian dry goods—stuff that may be hard to find in the regular grocery store, if you’re one of those people that likes to suffer the

pain of actually preparing a meal yourself. And they have a huge supply of Sanrio (a.k.a. Hello Kitty) stuff. Backpacks, lunch pails, pens, staplers, you name it, they have it. Listen close, ladies: if you’re over 12, you should really leave this stuff for the kids. Go ahead and buy it, but don’t hoard it for yourself. Give it to your niece, daughter, the neighbor kid— whoever, but for the love of God, let go of Hello Kitty already. Yeah, that means you should take the HELLO KITTY IS MY BFF frame off your license plate. Really, she’ll understand. Hello Kitty has new friends now. Oh, and while you’re at it, evict the stuffed animals from your bed and go to TJ’s Warehouse Bento and Catering and buy some lunch for your husband. He deserves it. MTW

Be Free Sunday (Mar. 18), 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Eddie Tam Memorial, Makawao [CULTURAL FESTIVAL] This event claims that the participants are “a mind blowingly diverse, cross cultural, mutlidisciplinary, and uniquely passionate group of artists, visionaries, performers, philosphers, scientists, stewards and world bridgers,” formed from the attendees. If I didn’t know any better I’d think this was just a way for lazy artists to throw a performance party without having to organize roles. Can anybody blame them, though, with the spectrum of talent arrayed on this island and those who visit—any director would be hard put to present everyone in their best colors. That’s why you’re invited to present yourself. Those of you who would refuse attendance out of shyness, don’t! This event needs you, too, to perform as audience and backdrop. Just think how amusing it’ll be to watch your neighbors strutting their stuff in public when you usually have to peek at them through their window. If you know in advance that you want to actively participate then the noon to six Saturday pre-fest would be a good place for you to meet your co-conspirators and devise the intention field for the following Sunday. “Waiting for a show like you...” Friday (Mar. 16), 7 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater, MACC [ROCK SHOW] I am more excited about this Foreigner concert than I should be. It’s almost embarrassing—I wasn’t even born when Foreigner formed back in 1976, but I love them all the same. How can you resist tunes like “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” “Feels like the First Time,” Double Vision,” “Juke Box Hero” and “Hot Blooded?” I mean, “Hot Blooded?!” That song is fricking awesome—a perfect driving-too-fast-with-a-head-in-your-lap kinda song. Don’t act like you’ve never been there... or at least wished you were there. For Friday’s concert, here’s the performers that will be gracing the stage: Mick Jones (duh), Jeff Jacobs, Thom Gimbel, Kelly Hansen, Jason Bonham and Jeff Pilson. [HIPHOP, ROOTS, ROCK] Everybody, and I mean everybody, is just going ape-shit over this new band that’s hit the island over the past few months. Well, actually the band is new but the members come from established acts on Maui. Gorilla Jazz is the culmination of dudes from hip-hop group Amphibeus Tungs and rock-island-ska-metal band The Easy. The result is a sound that vocalist/MC Quest Eons says is, “something different but not weird,” combining the vastly diverse influences of its members to introduce a new type of music that they call “G-Jazz.” However you might define the sound, these are musicians who know how to put on a skankin’ high-energy show and really get the crowd to go bananas. How exciting is that? Madama Butterfly—the opera that’s coming here—is about a geisha who marries a U.S. Navy guy and the love and (you know it’s gotta happen) betrayal that goes along with it. The sets and costumes are supposed to be unbelievable. They’re designed by worldrenowned artist Jun Kaneko. The composer for Madama Butterfly is Giacomo Puccini. [FILM] Themes abound in Sweet Land. The film tells—in English, German and Norwegian, with English subtitles (what, cuz, no pidgin?)—the story of a land heir torn between selling his family’s sacred grounds and holding onto the sentimental plot. The movie’s told in flashbacks, which can be cool (especially when you’re stoned) into the early days of the family tree, when immigrants had to struggle for every shred of dignity they could earn. Focused primarily on Inge, the heir’s deceased grandmother (played by the impressive Elizabeth Reaser), the film captures the magic of adventure and the power of love to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. As if the powers of love and the potential of the American Dream weren’t enough, Sweet Land is a visual feast offering majestic landscapes of farmland and wide open, country spaces. Bullock Jumble Domestic troubles arrive in a puzzle of fate Ageless beauty Sandra Bullock gives her typical automated performance in a superficial cross between the recent Deja Vu and Bullock’s own excruciating movie The Lake House. Time folds back and forth in various permutations as suburban housewife Linda Hanson (Bullock) awakens to discover that her husband Jim (Julian McMahon) has been killed in a car accident, except for the times that she awakens to discover that he’s still alive. Clues about Jim’s fate mount alongside bizarre events, such as Linda’s eldest daughter becoming horribly scarred after running through a plate glass window or watching Jim’s coffin break open when it’s dropped on the ground moments before his funeral.

The Premonition

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/97 mins.

The non-linear plot becomes an annoyingly repetitive device that stalls before the final act stitches the narrative puzzle together. Admittedly, there’s a guilty pleasure in watching any Sandra Bullock movie because of the commercially generic choices she makes at every level of production and performance.

Composer Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean) teases with an evocative score that, like everything else in the movie, will fall short of its perceived aim. Early in their relationship, Jim gives Linda a substantial three-bedroom house as a perfect place for them to raise a family. As with The Lake House, the dwelling functions as an emblem of compatibility whose foundation is tested under supernatural conditions. Fast-forward to nearly a decade later and the couple has two little girls. The family is living a life torn from a SUV commercial. Still, tragedy strikes after Linda listens to a telephone message from Jim where he professes his love for their daughters before dropping the call, ostensibly to talk to a woman whose voice we hear in the background. His voice sounds depressed, as if he may be considering suicide, and his manner spurs the dramatic tension. Then a police trooper informs Linda of her husband’s death after a big rig jackknifed on the highway. Where many women might faint at such news, Bullock’s Linda remains stoic until she wakes up shocked to find Jim drinking coffee in the kitchen. The surreal episode transforms Linda into an investigator searching every cranny for clues that might enable her to preserve her husband’s life.

You know, I had no idea that Nip/Tuck guy did movies

Already in a vacuum-sealed role, McMahon (Fantastic Four) carries his death-warmed-over persona too far. There isn’t a whiff of chemistry between he and Bullock. When the couple argues about the wilting state of their marriage, a contagious apathy flies off the screen. Screenwriter Bill Kelly’s priest coaches Linda with platitudes about her wretched existence and brings the movie to a screeching halt in the name of backpedaled exposition.

There’s no pretending that The Premonition is anything more than a cheap knock-off of an M. Night Shyamalan thriller. The melodrama here is so rotten that the riddle is moot. Nevertheless, Sandra Bullock is the girlish tomboy that grew up to forge a cottage industry of mediocre cinema. Her movies somehow improve when they’re screened on airplanes. So what if you come out numb. MTW

You Can Change Him… Just Shut Up Maui author Lynn Rassmussen insists Men Are Easy

harks don’t scare me. I don’t faint at the sight of blood. When onboard an especially turbulent flight, I am cool, calm and collected. But if there’s one thing that gets my palms sweaty, causes my pulse to race and my stomach to turn into knots, it’s hearing the words “We need to talk.” We’re all taught communication is the key to a healthy relationship. We’re also told all relationships take work. And isn’t it common knowledge that you can’t change people—you can only change yourself? Lynn Rassmussen disagrees. She’s the author of the recent book Men Are Easy: A simple guide to fun, sexy, happy, and easy relationships. She says we’re stuck in outdated modalities, yet we live in a fast-paced world that places many more demands on our time than our parents had, and our ideas about relationships need to shift. “As little girls, we’re graded and so structured,” said Rasmussen, who has a Masters in psychology with an emphasis in systems thinking. “We learned to strive for perfection. We are not told to trust ourselves. It’s the industrial age metaphor: Love is hard work, it’s rare, expensive and if you don’t get it, you need experts. Let’s pretend it’s part of nature, but not in a new-agey way. Love is the flow of energy between people. It’s genetic, made for our survival.” First of all, there’s no such thing as a relationship. “A relationship is a process, not a thing,” Rasmussen wrote in her book. “When you act from common sense, you relate well.” That’s what it says in chapter four, “There Is No Such Thing as a Relationship,” which comes between the chapters “Communication is Not the Key,” “You Can Change Him” and “Don’t Work at It.” Yes, this is a self-help book that promotes positive reaction by strongly encouraging non-action. Basically it’s a multi-step program on how not to try to fix your problem. And apparently, housework is the leading cause of most distress in domestic relationships, even more so than finances. But contrary to public opinion, Rasmussen believes the best way to approach a solution is to not come up with one, at least right away. “What I’m saying is, yes, the household is a mess,” she said. “First, get yourself together—focus on you, first. This doesn’t mean take a vacation or get a massage. I mean put food in the fridge, do laundry, sleep. And then you can think straight. “Problem solving is a poor way to do things,” said Rasmussen, who is also a professional business and life coach. “We have to get creative, use a different approach. You need to play, not work at it. When you lighten up, your perspective opens up. When you’re

tem; sometimes you need an upgrade. But it doesn’t happen overnight.” Now married for 31 years, Rasmussen has discovered a new perspective on communication and relationships, one that values chaos, self-care and playtime. “I want to have more fun, I want to be happy,” she said. “It changes the feeling, opens people up to start to see what’s possible. There’s always a risk to being open but it’s the only alternative. Start to trust it. People start responding to you differently. It happens with business, too. There may be a huge difference between cubic zirconium and a real diamond. Most people, however, can’t tell which is which, unless they see a price tag. It’s often important. But there are some things that really are just about appearances, and what’s beneath doesn’t really matter. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Some hilariously backwards woman in Florida complained about the marquee of a local theater putting on a production of The Vagina Monologues. Consequently, the thing was changed to the laughable title, “The Hoohaa Monologues.” I’m actually more concerned about the theater owners, who backed down on the basis of one complaint, instead of sticking to their guns (especially since The Vagina Monologues is about women reclaiming their hoohaas). There’s nothing wrong with listening to people’s concerns, but kowtowing to them (especially when they’re just plain ridiculous)—just makes you a laughingstock. Keep that in mind this week.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) A couple weeks ago, I tried to see the lunar eclipse. The weather, however, interfered, so all I could see were dimly illuminated clouds. Oh well. Shit happens. I mention it because you’ve spent an undue amount of time and energy lately kicking yourself about stuff that you had little to no control over. I know you hate feeling helpless, but in this case exaggerating, even in your own mind, how much power you actually have is simply self-destructive. Sometimes we really are quite limited as to what we can do, and it’s better to simply accept that (especially once the situation is over, and there’s really nothing you can do, anymore).

I recently gave a friend some advice about “listening to the universe” and not trying to force things to happen. He’d come up with a plan, but when he put feelers out about his idea, he encountered nothing but setbacks and obstacles; consequently I suggested he table his plan for a while. I’m not saying we ought to give up whenever the going gets rough, but paying attention to signs like these isn’t a terribly bad idea. There might turn out to be a better time or method to accomplish what you hope. If what you’re up to this week isn’t going especially well (and it’s not incredibly time-sensitive or urgent), consider putting it on the back burner, until something changes.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) The U.S. Postal Service, apparently in response to frequent complaints about long waits, has decided to “solve” the problem by removing clocks from their post offices, so people won’t notice how long they’re actually waiting. Besides being utterly impractical, this non-solution is also embarrassingly laughable. Who do they think they’re fooling? Someone close to you is likely to attempt a similarly childish and transparent ploy in order to address a problem or get your attention. It’s up to you to decide how much credit they should get for good intentions.

You’ve heard this before but it bears repeating: you reap what you sow. You’re acting like a gardener who goes out to her vegetable patch, then acts surprised that what’s come up is corn, carrots and tomatoes, instead of peas, okra and broccoli; the plants that grew are the ones whose seeds she planted, so she has no right to complain. To be fair, you might be upset because only corn and tomatoes grew, when you also planted, right next to them, seeds for cauliflower and potatoes. Maybe you put the seeds in the wrong place, or in the wrong kind of soil, or gave them too much or too little water. Shit happens. Move on, and eat your vegetables, instead of complaining about the ones that aren’t there.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Unless it’s a computer or other hi-tech gadget, I don’t particularly like the look of anything that appears to be brand-new. Most things look better with some wear, from books to clothes to buildings. People do, too. Sure, you don’t necessarily want someone who’s worn out, but a few scars and scratches, evidence of having lived, can be incredibly hot. You’ve lived, and survived some pretty rough patches. That’s sexy, which is why I’m confounded whenever you try to hide that and appear more innocent or less battle-scarred than you are. Flaunt it baby. Anyone who’s going to get as close as you want them to is going to find your scars, anyway, so why not show them off from the get-go?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Just as the most homophobic people back in high school were almost invariably closet queers, those doing the “persecution” now are the ones most guilty of whatever they’re persecuting. Keep that in mind as you fight the good fight—those on the other side may merit your scorn and derision for being such haters, but they deserve an ounce of compassion, too. What they hate is probably something inside themselves, and that’s got to be hard to live with. Don’t cut them any slack, but remember that they’re suffering, all the time, just by being themselves.

The Funhouse Mirror of Love The greatest comfort of my old age, and that which gives me the highest satisfaction, is the pleasing remembrance of the many benefits and friendly offices I have done to others. – Marcus Cato As a girlfriend, I can be a bit of a nightmare. I am dramatic, self-righteous, moody, distant and uncommunicative. I keep long hours at work, and I bring it home with me. I’m self-absorbed yet have trouble saying no to my friends, am frequently broke, always restless, physically demanding and tend to obsess over any sign of discord, whether it’s an argument about the electricity bill or a dirty sock left on the floor. According to an ex, I’m a rigid “defender of my groove.” I have an inexplicable desire to be honest at all costs and often write about the most personal aspects of my life in this column. Though I don’t act on it, I develop crushes on nearly everyone I meet. Without a partner, these flaws are inconsequential. Or, that is to say, in the previous four years of my lone-rambling, nobody was pointing these things out to me. And more importantly, nobody was offended by any of it. But I guess the beauty of a relationship is that it can show you the ugly parts of yourself, too. After about six months or so, that mirrored soft focus lens gets replaced by a 32x magnifier on every bruise, pimple, scar and ingrown hair that lies just beneath the surface of the Mona Lisa smirk of my enormous, eggshelled ego. This is the lesson I learned a couple weekends ago when I celebrated my birthday. Since I chickened out of a weekend in Vegas with my girl Sonja, BJ decided to take me out for a drink after work. I convinced The Boyfriend I’d be home in an hour or two, and trotted off to the Dog and Duck—that new Irish pub in Kihei. A couple friends joined us there, over Guinness and shots of Bailey’s, including yet another Palm Springs buddy I hadn’t seen in 15 years. He was sweet, and while he harked back to his band’s many parties at the abandoned nudist colony in the desert, I too reminisced. Did we have sex? I wondered. I could not recall if it was he or his brother. But then I couldn’t remember if he even had a brother… A few “Duck Farts” later, BJ and I thought it time to run across the street and down some sushi at Hirohachi before we ventured over to Bada Bing’s, where Gus, Daniel J and our old Hapa’s bartender Jorge treated me to a birthday shot or two and then we darted to another bar where we met another friend and his pal who was maybe not as inebriated as I was and who, for some reason, started playing some game of wits or something with me and I was pissed because I was losing but I just couldn’t quit and I really started to believe I was 21 again. Meanwhile, The Boyfriend, waiting patiently back at home, blew out the candles on the birthday cake he’d made for me and went to bed. The next day, after a very sincere apology for my no-call, no-show at home, I trotted off to Lahaina to continue the birthday celebration with my girls on the Westside. Simply replace the previous night’s components with “Mind Erasers,” Sly Mongoose, Paradice Bluz, Bamboo, Blue Lagoon, an after-hours party and another amazing display of relationship ineptitude—and this time my birthday cake was replaced with a text message somewhat resembling a really twisted fortune cookie saying: “Work and parties are your life, not commitment, love and passion.” Happy birthday to me.
