LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR WE GOOFED Thanks for your great story on my new book, Island Life 101: A Newcomer’s Guide to Hawaii, and for the opportunity to be on your podcast with the writer, Jessica Armstrong, and Starr Begley. Jessica really captured the spirit of what I tried to do in this book, and I really appreciate it! I do have a couple of corrections: I don’t dance the hula (in fact, I’m famous for being choreographically challenged), and I don’t speak Hawaiian (though I love to sing Hawaiian songs). -Jill Engledow, via email
GIVE ME A CHECK OR GIVE ME DEATH! (Editor’s note: the following represents a very small sampling of the rather negative, often vicious comments we received in regards to our Mar. 20, 2008 Eh Brah! column. Guess you people really, REALLY enjoy writing checks…) I’ve seen the same check-at-thecheck stand perpetrators, and I get that twinge of mild outrage at those Luddites who steadfastly resist progress and pay by check. It’s an irony that paper checks were invented to get around another inconvenience: having to carry cash on your person. In their time, checks were considered a convenience, just like debit cards are today. A lot of folks resisted using the “newfangled” form of payment back then, just like your two check stand speed bumps. However, it’s paradise we’re in here; time to cool it out and slow it down. If you choose this life (like I did), you should try to slow your tempo ‘cause songs
are slower here. I still get jumpy and Jonesin once in awhile, but Island Time is starting to rub off on me. So make allowances, take a few quiet deep breaths, and get frosty when those ants in your pants make you want to jump and squirm. -Maui Mike, via Mauitime.com Stereo Installation, Security & Convenience Features, Mobile Video, Back-up Sensors & Cameras, iPod & MP3 Integration
Okay seriously: I thought it was going to be something bad but you got all worked up over someone inconveniencing you by writing a check ahead of you in line? That’s just ridiculous. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the part where you mentioned how irritated you get just thinking about it. WOW—what do you do when the guy in front of you decides not to blaze through the yellow light and you get stuck waiting for the green? I can picture you now getting out of your car and falsing some poor sap just because your PMS kicked in when you were behind the wheel! I hope I never run into you at the super market... or anywhere for that matter! Take a prozac, sweetie! -Malu Lani, via Mauitime.com

Toronto police announced in February that they had arrested the man who had stolen a backhoe with the intention of driving it to a car wash in order to break down a wall and get at the facility’s coin machine. The call to police came from a snowplow that was hot on the backhoe’s heels, with the driver having diverted from his route to chase the thief.
of the Kevlar in more than two million combat helmets sold to the Pentagon during 1994-2006. In February 2008, Sioux agreed to pay $2 million to settle the dispute. The company did not contest that the Kevlar threading was lighter than the contract required, but the Pentagon said it knew of no troop injuries linked to the substandard threading. In August 2007, however, while the Pentagon was still investigating, the U.S. Air Force nonetheless contracted with Sioux to produce new Kevlar combat helmets.

GREAT ART!
In a Feb. 8 program, the Hamascontrolled Gaza television channel AlAksa introduced a third cartoon animal mascot for its campaign of resistance against Israelis, according to a February dispatch in London’s Daily Mail. Following “Farfur” (a Mickey Mouse look-alike who, according to the storyline, was eventually assassinated by an Israeli soldier) and “Nahul” (a bee who was killed when he could not get medical treatment after an Israeli attack), the new character is “Assud,” a Bugs Bunny lookalike who says, “I will eat Jews.”
In December, Edmonton, Alberta, tattoo artist Lane Jensen augmented the inked caricature of a buxom cowgirl on his own left calf with silicone “implants” in the skin under where the woman’s breasts are. However, within two weeks, the fluid went astray and had to be drained. Jensen said some bodies just reject breast implants. “I guess my girl wasn’t meant to have 3-D breasts.”

This is to the punks who keep egging my boyfriend’s car. Why??? He drives a nice little sports car and it’s kind of expensive, so why would you want to ruin it? I can’t imagine that he ever did anything to you to deserve that kind of harassment. See, the two eggs that you threw last time caused $3,000 worth of damage to the car’s paint! Then you did it again while we are out of town and the egg dried and ate away the paint. That meant another $3,000 went down the drain, all because you stupid punks think throwing eggs is funny! Thanks for spending the money that we are saving for our wedding!

Positive Energy
Recused!
A legislative look at renewable energy bills A little more than two months ago, the 2008 Hawai‘i legislative session began with great fanfare about the importance of local renewable energy sources. House Speaker Calvin Say and others brought attention to our state’s over-dependence on imported fuels, and the opportunities to bolster our economy by keeping our energy dollars in the state with renewable energy incentives. Now it’s crunch time at the legislature, and particularly for some important energy initiatives. Among the most noteworthy of this year’s crop of energy bills is Senate Bill 644 SD3, mandating installation of solar hot water systems on all new construction beginning Jan. 1, 2010. For years, advocates have described this measure as the “low-hanging fruit”—that is, the easiest, most costeffective way of reducing household electrical use. But a similar bill failed in last year’s legislative session, a victim of opposition by both Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and, curiously, the solar industry itself. But this year, the bill appears to have a better chance of passing. Testimony to date has tallied 93 in support, and only eight opposed. Those in opposition include the Hawai‘i Chamber of Commerce, realtors and the Hawai‘i Solar Energy Association (HSEA). HECO submitted earlier testimony that listed five reasons the bill was flawed, but was otherwise neutral. They have since done an about-face, and are backing the bill, noting that they saw an avalanche of support. Renewable energy advocates Jeff Mikulina of the Sierra Club Hawai‘i and Henry Curtis of Life of the Land have met with HSEA representatives to discuss their opposition, and to propose possible amendments. “They don’t want amendments,” Curtis said. “They want the bill killed.” When asked why the solar energy association would oppose a bill that would directly benefit their industry, Curtis replied, “They’re afraid of a big company like Sun-Edison coming in. They’re afraid of home kits for contractors to do their own installations. They’re afraid of everything.” Life of the Land also supports an amendment calling for a 35 percent tax credit to those installing solar systems in new or existing residences, rather than reducing the renewable energy credit to 20 percent for systems installed before 2010, and 15 percent thereafter. This is a common sense

incentive, given that fuel costs from petroleum-based electrical generation are increasing about five percent yearly. ouse Bill 3211 HD2 is the Right to Dry Clothes Bill. No kidding. This legislation addresses the fact that many homeowners associations restrict clothesline use for aesthetic reasons. Using sunshine and trade winds instead of a gas or electric clothes dryer can save a household from $250 to $450 yearly, according to the Sierra Club. A typical family using an electric clothes dryer may be responsible for more than a ton of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Then there’s House Bill 2250 HD2, which would expand opportunities for homegrown power through net metering. Begun in 2001, net metering allows customers who produce their own energy to reduce their bills by paying only for their net consumption—the amount of electricity consumed minus the amount generated. HB 2250 picks up where the prior legislation left off, increasing the allowable size of a home energy system, and raising the total amount of net metered energy on the grid. Just last week, the Hawai‘i Public Utility Commission (PUC) doubled the amount of net metering on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, from 50 to 100 kilowatts. Maui actually leads the state in net metering energy producers, with 148 such installations, compared with just 98 on Oahu. The benefits of increased home energy production include reducing dependency on imported oil, reducing emissions, diversifying Hawai‘i’s economy and increasing our energy security. HD 2250 would help the increasing number of residents choosing to invest in solar photovoltaic systems to counter the soaring fuel surcharges

attached to our electric bills. wo renewable fuel bills introduced by Senator Shan Tsutsui (D, Wailuku, Waihe‘e, Kahului, Paia) have crossed over from the Senate to the House. Senate Bill 3215, “Relating to Biodiesel,” provides market incentives for local biodiesel development, including making state lands available for fuel crops. The bill establishes a state biodiesel feedstock crop and fuel purchasing program, and also creates tax exemptions for biomass crushing facilities and lands used for biodiesel feedstock crops. While support has been apparent for the intent of the bill, the state Department of Agriculture has voiced objections with some of the oversight provisions. The

Got a bit of a jolt during the most recent Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearing. It came at the beginning of the third and last case of the March 6, 2008 hearing—Five Palms Beach Grill in Wailea was up on one count of getting caught in an LC minor decoy sting operation. But before either Five Palms’ president or attorney could open his mouth and plead, board member Glenn Kunitake leaned forward to his microphone. “I’d like to recuse myself,” he told board Chairman Donald Fujii. “I have a direct banking relationship with the licensee.” This was surprising, but not so much, given Kunitake’s background. A banker for the last 30 years, he’s currently a vice president/regional manager for Hawai`i National Bank (his 2006 Board and Commission Application Form says he’s been with the bank since 1993). Given the fact that a banker has a direct interest in the financial welfare of his client, Kunitake’s decision not to ask questions or take part in the discussion of a possible sanction of Five Palms was clearly justified. But it was what Chairman Fujii said next that surprised me. “Thank you,” he told Kunitake. “But we’d like you to stay.” This was odd because of the nature of Adjudication Board deliberations, which are done in secret. No court reporter takes down the minutes of deliberation sessions and, except for Board Secretary Sharon Ito, no member of the public or even LC department staff is privy to their discussions. Some panels (I’m thinking Mainland here) ask members who recuse themselves from a particular agenda item to leave the room entirely. Their mere presence in deliberation, the thinking goes, could affect the non-conflicted members. But in Maui County, that’s apparently not necessary. Section 08-102-33 of the Rules of the Liquor Commission simply says conflicted members “shall not participate in the discussion or vote” on the offending issue.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, Mar. 19 Good news for everyone! Of course, by “everyone,” I mean “Charlie Jencks”—I mean, we’re all pulling for the plucky lad, aren’t we? Well, today we all got one step closer to never having to listen to him open his pie-hole again because the Maui County Council voted 5-4 (don’t you just love those squeakers?) to approve Honua`ula Partners LLC’s massive Wailea 670 project that will replace ancient South Maui dryland forest with 1,400 homes and a private golf course. Amazingly enough, nominally pro-development council members Riki Hokama and Bill Medeiros joined the usual slow-growth duo of Michelle Anderson and Jo Anne Johnson in voting against the massive project that, still to this day, lacks a water source. And, as Anderson rather forcefully pointed out during the hearing, golf course run-off leads directly to reef destruction. But Jencks— who’s being paid big money to move the project through county government—is happy, and isn’t that all that matters right now? Of course, he’s still got to get Mayor Charmaine Tavares’ approval and (once again) the Maui Planning Commission’s approval, so it’s not like you’re going to see bulldozers congregating at the southern end of Pi‘ilani Highway anytime soon. But in all likelihood, it’s going to happen.
THURSDAY, Mar. 20 Looks like it’s curtains for Aloha Airlines. For the second time since 2004, the company has declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This is hardly surprising, the way the 61-year-old air-

line has been bleeding cash lately: $81 million last year, $46 million the year before, $41 million the year before that… But a nasty inter-island fare war ($39 Maui-Oahu tickets, anyone?) combined with out-ofcontrol fuel costs have once again put the screws on old Aloha and its 3,500 employees. The whole industry is, well, pretty messed up: Hawaiian Airlines scored a judgment against Mesa, alleging unfair competitive practices; ATA recently trashed some of this Midwestern routes, and may dump its Hawai‘i runs; a recent go! flight in which both the pilot and the co-pilot fell asleep in the cockpit between Honolulu and Hilo; Southwest ran afoul of the Federal Aviation Administration for repeatedly flying aircrafts the agency deemed “unsafe”; Delta and Northwestern had talked about merging to save each other, but now even that seems unlikely. Remember when airlines other than Hawaiian actually served meals? They were terrible, sure, but they came with the cost of the ticket. These days, you’re lucky if you can get half a can of Pringles for $5 from the flight attendant, and even then you better have your Visa handy because they don’t take cash at 37,000 feet. I suppose it’s considered out of line to bring up that old Reagan Administration spectre Airline Deregulation, but seriously: if you start treating airlines like any other firm, subject to little more control than that offered by the market itself, then the industry will shake itself out with the same ruthless efficiency that marks the big banks, hospitals and oil companies. Someday, perhaps, the mighty pendulum of history will swing back towards government regulation and stabilization, but until then, don’t expect commercial flying to get any easier.
FRIDAY, Mar. 21 Did I mention that I’ve been flying a lot lately?
SATURDAY, Mar. 22 Yeah, I guess it was pretty obvious.

Party Caucus vote back, and I suppose it’s as good as any other reason. That all these arguments and machinations—enjoyable though they are—only seem to strengthen the candidacy of Republican John McCain (and Ralph Nader, actually) seems almost beside the point.
MONDAY, Mar. 24 Yikes—according to an Associated Press story put out moments ago, Molokai Ranch (owned by Molokai Properties, Ltd) is shutting down at the end of the month, putting 120 people on the island out of work. Citing “community opposition” to its plans to build a large luxury development at La`au Point, the company says that by the end of the month they’ll close the Molokai Lodge, the Kaupoa Beach Village, the Kaluakoi Golf Course, the Maunaloa gas station and the Maunaloa theater (the only movie house on the island), as well as its actual ranching

SUNDAY, Mar. 23 So what’s a superdelegate to do? How do the nearly 800 special Democrats exercise their votes for presidential nominee come August, when their party holds their big convention in Denver. Vote according to how their particular state’s primary or caucus went? Or vote their own… what’s the word? Ahh, yes: “conscience.” Now according to Hawai‘i superdelegate (and U.S. Senator) Daniel Inouye, they can vote however the hell they want to. “It’s their decision,” he says in today’s Honolulu Advertiser. “We were designated as superdelegates to use our initiative and experience to do what is right.” That’s Inouye’s rationale behind his intention to vote for Senator Hillary Clinton, even though Senator Barack Obama nailed the Hawai`i Democratic
operations. This is stunning news, and could potentially devastate the island. “I do hope, however, that the actions of Moloka‘i Properties Limited are based on the company’s legitimate concerns about the state of the Moloka‘i economy,” state Senator J. ROBREPORT ENERGY: continued from page 8 other agency tagged with administering the workings of the proposed legislation, the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT), has expressed similar reservations. BlueEarth Biodiesel and Imperium Renewables, the big bio-diesel refinery proposers, dutifully sent in supporting testimony, though it’s clear that if their plans go through, no local feedstock would be available for many years to come. Oddly, the PUC has taken no action in the past five months on a docket for biodiesel procurement—something the commission originally said they would put on a fast track. Perhaps the reality has set in that biofuels are not quite the Holy Grail some thought they might be, and that proceeding cautiously is more prudent. Sen. Tsutsui’s second bill is SB 2764, “Relating to Ethanol Facility Credit.” This measure would repeal the qualifying capacity limits of ethanol production facilities, provides a vehicle to change the total tax credits allowed per year and repeals the sunset provision with respect to annual capacity for qualifying ethanol production facilities. These tweaks to previous legislation surely demonstrate that our elected leaders are aware that there is still no local ethanol production, two years after a mandate that requires 10 percent ethanol in our gasoline. Predictions that the ethanol mandate would stimulate local business opportunities haven’t yet proven correct.
decide all state and county permits (except for a county grading permit and, if necessary, a PUC Power Purchase Agreement). The inter-island transmission line shall be exempt from a public hearing or contested case hearing.” The Sierra Club has raised similar concerns about exempting large facilities from environmental review and public input. “Expediting permitting of new renewable energy facilities—particularly those that are located in wild areas—may cause important resource protection measures to be overlooked,” states their
website. “Some of the ‘renewable energy facilities’ contemplated in HB 2863 HD1 may be truly fossil fuel facilities in disguise. A recent proposal to produce biofuel by Kauai Ethanol LLC sought a covered source air permit to burn imported coal at the facility to convert molasses to ethanol. In lieu of this measure, the Sierra Club would fully support bills to provide a renewable energy facilities coordinator at DBEDT (an ombudsman of sorts) to help shepherd projects, priority processing of renewable energy permits, and any other measures to cut bureaucracy—as long as
the existing public input and environmental protection processes remain intact.” It’s encouraging that Hawai‘i’s leading environmental organizations are watchdogs for renewable energy. Many caring citizens who may not find time to track specific legislation or write meaningful testimony can still write a check to these worthy organizations to support their advocacy for our sustainable energy future. For further information, visit www.hi.sierraclub.org or www.lifeofthelandhawaii.org. MTW
ouse Bill 2862, “Relating to Wind Energy” and House Bill 2863, “Relating to Renewable Energy” spell double trouble. Billionaire David Murdoch is proposing an enormous wind energy project on Lanai, with 300-400 megawatts to be shipped to Oahu by undersea cable. The problem is in the two bills providing exemptions from normal environmental reviews. One testifier back in January dubbed HB 2862 as “Act 3”—referring to Act 2, the special legislation afforded to Hawai‘i Superferry, Inc. DBEDT and the Department of Health testified two months ago that they were uncomfortable with the bill, but it remains alive. According to Life of the Land’s outreach, HB 2863 would empower DBEDT to, “(a) review the Draft Environmental Impact Statement; (b) hold no hearings; (c) grant no contested case hearings; (d) adopt no rules; (e) have no criteria; and (f)

hese days, food is big business. Even organic food: today, massive supermarkets like Whole Foods and Earthbound Farm sell billions of dollars worth of healthy foods every year. Walking into one of their superstores is like entering another world, with ceilings that seem impossibly high and fully stocked shelves to stretch on for what must be miles. What gets lost in all that is a connection between the consumer and the producer. So this year, we decided to find out who actually makes food on Maui. What follows is a run-down on some local companies—many family-owned—that sell wonderful pastries, jams, sauces, beers, vegetables, meats and desserts. There’s a lot here, so take your time digging in.

In operation for just three years, Waiakoa Farms keeps things very simple. “We grow strawberries,” farmer Tony Rodriguez (pictured on our cover) told me. “We’re going to plant sweet onions, but that’s in the future.” The farm pictured here and on the cover is their sixacre Kula operation, but they also have a farm in Ulupalakua. Both Rodriguez and his partner Roy Kanauara have decades of farming experience. Rodriguez, in fact, spent 30 years growing strawberries in California. They currently sell their fruit to Kula Produce. MAUI JELLY COMPANY Saturday morning just isn’t Saturday morning without at least one Maui Jelly Co. jar on the breakfast table. This family-owned business makes products that are so yummy and diverse that it’s even been featured on Food Network. Which is fantastic, as long as they can produce enough tropical food items, exotic condiments, relishes and candies to supply the new found mainland demand while still providing us locals with a steady supply. I don’t know how they make such tasty treats, but it probably has something do with using only the best locally produced produce and Maui cane sugar. There are too many delicious options to list, but some of my personal favorites include banana butter, ginger marmalade, guava jelly, chocolate macadamia nut bark, tropical fudge, papaya seed dressing, Maui onion seed dressing, garlic peppercorn ketchup, guava BBQ sauce, jalapeno mustard, coconut syrup and macadamia nut honey. You can find these onolicious creations at Longs, Whalers General, EZ Discounts, Napili Market, Wal-Mart, Mana Foods, DFS at the Kahului Airport and online. Maui Jelly is also available on the islands of Oahu and Kauai. For more information call 242-6989 or visit www.mauijellyfactory.com. [STARR BEGLEY] see FOOD, page 16

ALI‘I KULA LAVENDER Ali‘i Kula Lavender sits high up on the Kula hillside. At this elevation many species of these delicately fragrant and edible pale purple flowers thrive on the cool morning air and intense sun exposure, coaxing the lavender fields to bloom year round. The blossoms can typically be found in flower arrangements, potpourri and in essential oil form. Soaps, lotions and perfumes are common uses for the flower, but Ali‘i and its partners have created an entire culinary line of lavender products. Their Royal Velvet culinary lavender can be blended into jellies and baked goods, such as their own scone mix. These scones, with just a touch of water, come out marvelously dense and flakey
Maui Cattle Co. has been around since 1873 and they’re still raising cattle the good old-fashioned way, with plenty of lush green pastures for roaming and grazing and zero growth stimulants, antibiotics or artificial ingredients. You can buy Maui Cattle Co. beef at many local markets, including Ah Fooks, Alive & Well, Hanzawa Store, Hasegawa General Store, Kula Ace Hardware, Longs Drug Stores, Mana Foods, Morihara Store, Pine Isle Market, Pukalani Superette, Rodeo General Store and the Ulupalakua Ranch Store (they also offer elk, in season). Or if you prefer someone else to cook your meat for you, try Maui Cattle Co. beef at Aloha Mixed Plate, Aroma D’Italia, Maui Brew Co., Hali‘imaile General Store, Hard Rock Café, Ichiban Okazuya, Maui Tacos, Roy’s, Stella Blues and Young’s Kitchen. As Maui’s only microbrewery, Maui Brewing Co. could bank on that novelty alone. But owners Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley have used their passion for beer, love of Maui, and dedication to ecologically sound business practicesto create a brewery that strives to make the smallest dent possible on the island’s fragile ecosystem. For instance, Maui Brewing Co.’s used oil is converted into biodiesel fuel, which then powers their vehicles. And all grain used in their brews goes to

with an aromatic hint of sweetness from the lavender flakes sprinkled throughout. Smear warm scones with Ali‘i-infused honey for the ultimate experience. But the lavender products are not just for people with a sweet tooth. The lavender gourmet seasoning mixes dill, thyme, pepper, basil, sea salt and several other herbs with lavender— a blend that can be added to marinades, used as a rub, or sprinkled on eggs, potatoes, vegetables and an endless list of other foods. Ali‘i also sells herb dressings, pepper jelly, chocolate, brownies and coffee infused with local lavender. The possible uses are endless and their website offers dozens of recipes and suggestions for using lavender at every meal. Locatetd at 1100 Waipoli Road, Kula. I couldn’t believe it when I discovered that it was only in 2002 that Maui Cattle Company sold its first steak. What did we do before then? Seriously, having eaten their steaks, I can’t really remember a time when they weren’t around. I must have
blocked all the chewy hormone and antibiotic-ridden beef that’s met my palate from memory. But just because the Maui Cattle Co. has only been selling beef for the last six years doesn’t mean that they’ve only been in the cattle business that long. In fact,

Currently, the Lahaina brewery is churning out three canned beer products for distribution–“canned,” by the way, being far superior to flavor-andfreshness-depleting glass bottles. Brewmaster Tom Kerns creates “handcrafted ales and lagers brewed with aloha,” often using local ingredients, including small sevenbarrel batches of Bikini Blonde Lager, Big Swell IPA and CoCoNut Porter, which utilizes real toasted coconut. From April 15 to May 1, their Kahana restaurant (previously, the Maui Fish & Game Brewing Co. & Rotisserie) will undergo an intensive remodel, even changing the menu to feature more traditional “brewpub”-ish fare. Both Maui Brewing Co.’s brewery and brewpub will also be completely solar-powered. Hmm... powered by beer and sun: what could be more Maui-style? Maui Brew Co.’s brewery is located at 910 Honoapi‘ilani Hwy., Lahaina, 1-877-MAUI-BREW. Its brewpub is located at 4405 Honoapi’ilani Hwy., Kahana, 669-FISH. O‘o Farm is nestled up high on Haleakala’s misty slope, where cool breezes and quenching rains alternate with cloudless skies and scorching heat, sometimes during the course of a single afternoon. The climate there is unique, and allows nonnative vegetation to thrive on the eight and a half acres of land owned and operated by the chefs and proprietors of I‘o and Pacific‘O restaurants in Lahaina. Rows of spinach, arugula and lettuce grow heartily on the farm, awaiting their noble destiny as fare at the restaurants. The vegetable garden seasonally bursts with asparagus, fennel, Japanese and Crescent Moon eggplant, cucumbers and peas. Fragrant lime, Thai and sweet Italian basils grow alongside blooming cilantro, rosemary and mint in the herb garden. Lemongrass, which absolutely blooms on the farm, acts as a border crop that protects other plants from weeds and insects. A citrus orchard yields several varieties of oranges, lemons and limes as well as a unique citrus fruit called Buddha’s Hand. The stone fruit garden, an oddity on tropical Maui, bears apricots, peaches, plums and pears. Basically, O’o Farm grows a little bit of everything, including apples, cherries, figs, strawberries, grapes and wild poha berries. The idea is to grow 100 percent of the produce for both restaurants and the Feast at Lele luau, which allows them to stop relying on expensive, imported food. They haven’t yet attained that goal, but the farm is on its way to being certified organic. Farm tours and lunches are available twice a week for anyone hoping for a fresh look. Located in Waipoli, near Kula. Call 667-4341 for reservations. [JA]

HANA HERBS AND FLOWERS Nearly 20 years ago, Rene and Eileen Comeaux of Hana Herbs and Flowers began farming pohole–fresh, succulent, gourmet tropical fern shoots. Depending on where you’re from, pohole is known by a few other names like “pako” in the Philippines, “warabi” in Japan and “ho‘i‘o” on the Big Island. According to the Comeauxs, the pohole grown on Maui is some of the best in the world–large, especially tender and, because of Hana’s climate, available year-round. The shoots are crunchy in texture, mild in flavor (some say it’s similar to an asparagus or okra) and contains lots of good-for-you stuff like iron, vitamin C, beta-carotene and fiber. Pohole grows wild in Hawai‘i and is native to the Islands. The Comeauxs were the first people to have it FDA-approved for export–a process that took nearly two years. People can try pohole in many of the fine dishes served at Hotel Hana Maui, Maui Prince or the Ritz Carlton. Chef Mark Avalon is also apparently a big fan. Hana Herbs and Flowers delivers pohole once a week to “this” side of the island so those of you interested can always place an order of your own. As an added bonus, their website has some great pohole-based recipes. For more information call 2487407 or visit www.hanaherbs.com [SB]
Michael “the Candy Man” Capuano created Wow Wee Maui candy bars nearly 12 years ago after trying unsuccessfully to sell a friend’s chocolate covered chewy bananas to Maui consumers. “Why not throw in some macadamia nuts and make a bar out of it?” he thought. It was a brilliant idea, giving birth to the original Wow Wee bar. That fudgey concoction was quickly followed by another delicious idea: Kona coffee and caramel blended into a milk chocolate bar, which became Capuano’s personal favorite. Delicious as these candy bars may be, Capuano didn’t stop there. He created a dark chocolate bar with Hawaiian coconut and a bar with white and dark chocolate and a hint of raspberry crunch. Then he pulled the chewy banana out of his original bar for macadamia nut purists (like me) who prefer their milk chocolate candy bar without fruit. Toffee bits arrived in a Wow Wee bar with Ka‘anapali Estate coffee. And then there’s the kava bar—a blend of Wow Wee’s mouth-watering cocoa goodness and Hawai‘i’s beloved awa root potion. Capuano has pretty much mastered the candy market here on Maui, but he plans to push forward with new recipes like a Maui Gold rum and raisin bar and a Kauai red sea salt and chocolate bar. I’m not a very hard sell, though, because by the time a Wow Wee Maui candy bar is melting like sweet molten lava in my mouth I’m already reaching for another one. Plus, I love the retro wrappers. Wow Wee Maui candy bars are available at Longs Drug Stores, Wow Wee Maui Café and various other Maui retailers. Wow Wee Maui Café is located at 333 Dairy Rd., Kahului. For a complete list of candy bar retailers call 871-1414 or visit www.wowweemaui.com. [JA] Photo: Sean M. Hower

TEDESCHI VINEYARDS Ah, Ulupalakua Red. The name, like the flavor, is just plain luxurious. I’ll say it again: Ulupalakua Red. Yes, still love it. In fact, this has been my preferred wine since the day I turned 21. I have many fond memories of sipping glass after glass of the stuff while reading a book by the fireplace during Olinda winters. Tedeschi Vineyards first opened in Ulupalakua back in 1974. Three years later they released their first bottle of Maui Blanc Pineapple. By 1980 the first grapes of the vineyard were harvested; in 1984 they released Maui Brut—Blanc de Noirs. Today, Tedeschi puts out many great wines like the Plantation Red. Depending on availability, there’s even a Raspberry wine. You can pretty much get their wines anywhere on the island, as well as many locations across the U.S. and even in Canada and Switzerland. For those of you who crave the ambiance of actually sipping Tedeschi wine in Ulupalakua, you can always visit their lovely and historic tasting room. SURFING GOAT DAIRY Photo: Jason Waterhouse
Surfing Goat Dairy boasts the best goat cheese on the island. Using just local organic products, Thomas Kafsack and his wife Eva-Maria have created more than 30 cheeses that are both popular and unique. The smooth goat cheese comes in mango, herb and horseradish and goat’s milk feta. The idea of the surfing goat came 10 years ago when the husband and wife team realized there was a lack of fresh cheese on the island. “We didn’t want to eat imported cheese anymore,” Tom
Kafsack said. “We decided we would create fresh cheese ourselves.” The Kafsacks went to France, Austria and Switzerland to learn the trade of making goat cheese, then returned to the island and purchased a little over 42 acres in Kula. Today, there are 218 goats on the farm and more than 75 percent of Surfing Goat Dairy cheeses have received second place or better in worldrenowned competitions. The cheeses are made fresh daily, with the goats being milked twice a day. The Kafsacks don’t use any pesticides or herbicides on their farm, nor do they use growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics on the goats. The vegetable products within the cheeses come from local organic farmers or themselves. You can find Surfing Goat cheeses at Down to Earth in Kahului, the Honolua Store in Kapalua, Kihei Wine & Spirits and Café Ciao at the Fairmont Kea Lani Resort in Wailea. 3651 Omaopio Rd., Kula. I drink vodka, probably a bit more often than my mother would approve of, so I know from personal experience that your typical vodka connoisseur has a wide range of choices when selecting a spirit. Even though vodka, by definition, is clear and virtually odorless, each variety and brand has distinct qualities that make it unique. Ocean Vodka is in a class of its own. It’s hand-crafted in small batches in a quaint Kahului distillery, making it the only local vodka to grace the Valley Isle. The process begins with water collected more than 3,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, just off the coast of Hawai‘i. Cold, pure and free of surface pollutants, the water is gently desalinated but not stripped of the minerals that make it smooth and unique. Organic grains of corn and rye, processed carefully to remove any impurities, are fermented through a four-column distilling procedure that creates a very drinkable, smooth product. The result is 80 proof premium vodka that’s so naturally near to perfect–so genuinely flavored by the wide waters that surround us–that blending in a flavor additive would only cheapen it. I’ll take mine shaken, with just a touch of fresh, tropical juices, and served in a martini glass. Available island-wide at grocery stores, restaurants and other retailers. VALLEY ISLE SEAFOOD This is one of Maui’s sort-of hidden treasures. “Sort-of,” referring to the fact that not everybody knows about it. There’s no dispute over it’s treasure-like qualities. Valley Isle Seafood not only provides wholesale fresh fish caught right here in Maui waters, but they have a fantastic deli where people can walk in and buy just as much seafood as they need–whether it’s for a family dinner or baby’s first luau. Speaking of luau’s, Valley Isle Seafood’s lunch items are the absolute bomb when it comes to real local food. Everyday they serve up something fresh like squid luau, kalua pork, fish plate, fresh fish & chips and lau lau. The food is always good, very authentic and never frozen. The fish & chips are, in my humble opinion, the best on the island. They use whatever is fresh and available. Every time that I’ve been there they’ve used Maui-caught Mahi. Do yourself a favor and don’t buy anymore of those frozen halibut fish sticks at the grocery store. Not only will your taste buds thank you for shopping at Valley Isle Seafood, but you’ll be supporting local business and local fishermen. Located at 475 Hukilike St., Kahului. HOME MAID BAKERY Sweet, succulent scents escape from Home Maid Bakery. The bakery is one of Maui’s premier spots for the best baked goods around. In 1960, Joseph and Monica Kozuki, both born and raised on the island, decided to open the bakery to make desserts using locally grown products. Before long, customers came to know Home Maid Bakery as the “Home of the Crispy Manju.” The specialty of the house, the Crispy Manju has a fruity filling and cookie-like crust. Although the Manju is top choice on many people’s list, the bakery offers a lot of other treats. The products used within the pastries, such as the pineapple and sweet potatoes, come from local farmers. There are no preservatives in their products—just natural additives. Of course, this means the breads and pastries have a shelf life of a mere three days. “We make homemade cookies, cakes, doughnuts and breads, to name a few,” Steve Tarnoff, Buyer and Facilities Manager, told me. “There are roughly 70 employees here working in their departments to make the site friendly and the smells worthwhile.” 1005 Lower Main St., Photo: Lisa Marino Wailuku, 244-7015. ROSELANI TROPICS ICE CREAM
Photo: Lisa Marino
Roselani Ice Cream has passed the test of time in a major way. After more than 70 years, it’s not only still a Maui favorite, but also the preferred ice cream across the state. Way back in 1932, Manuel Nobriga of Maui Soda & Ice Works in Wailuku began making ice cream from scratch to supply the local ice cream parlors. By the 1960s, Nobriga and his son Buddy perfected the recipe for the haupia, or coconut pudding, which is today’s top selling flavor. “I can’t add a single ingredient,” Cathy Nobriga-Kim, Manuel’s granddaughter, said. “It would be sacrilegious.” Today Nobriga-Kim runs Roselani Tropics and oversees the production of about 3,000 cartons a day that are distributed statewide. All the ice cream is still produced right here in Wailuku and is available just about everywhere, from little Mom & Pops to high-end resorts and chain super markets. 918 Lower Main St. Wailuku. 244-7951 [SB]
KULA COUNTRY FARMS Kula Country Farms is a fourth generation farm. Currently run by Chauncy Monden, it was started by his great grandfather. Monden grew up on the farm, and has run it full-time for the last decade. They grow, in no particular order: strawberries, onions, blueberries, daikon, yellow and green zucchini, Chinese peas, sugar snap peas, regular bush beans, carrots and celery. The December 2007 storms—which drumped more than a foot of rain on Upcountry—hurt the farms badly. “We lost a lot of crop in the ground,” Monden told me. “We’re short of onions. But we replanted.” In all, Monden lost about $100,000 worth of products and farm equipment, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. You can find the farm’s products at Pukulani Superette, Safeway, All Star Produce, Kula Produce and Morihara Store. “In a month, we’re going to open a fruit stand on the highway across from Rice Park,” Monden told me. “We’ll finally sell directly to the public.” Located at 365 Koheo Rd., Kula. 878-8381. Night at the Drive-In Saturday (Mar. 29) 6 p.m., Maui Community College [FILM] Drive-in movies are wonderfully retro. They make me think of classic cars, soda pop machines and awkward, horny teenagers coming up for air after necking in the back seat. At least that’s what happened the last time I went to a drive-in movie, except instead of a classic car I went in my high school boyfriend’s jacked-up pickup and instead of soda we drank cheap, canned beer that his older brother picked up for us. This time, though, it’s more of a family affair, with live entertainment by Uncle Boy, Uncle Benny and the Kalama ukulele class and food booths with pizza and baked goods. All three movies are appropriate for the whole family. Kekohi is a Maui-made adventure flick set in the time of Kamehameha. Then there’s Bee Movie, an animated headliner about an ambitious bee who refuses to make honey for a living. I missed it in the theaters but still want to see it because Sting, Oprah, Jerry Seinfeld and a bunch of other fun people do voices for it. And there’s a surf film called Nu the Movie, where the world’s most talented surfers ride the best waves in Bali, Indonesia, California, Hawai`i and Australia. So bring the kids for an evening of films and fun, or leave them home, park in the back and make out like you’re 16 again. $5 per person (walk in) $20 per car. 573-5530 for more info. [MUSIC] Ooklah the Moc is pretty fricking awesome. It was funny: a few UFC payper-views ago, two fighters came out to Ooklah the Moc’s music, which is pretty good evidence that their music has spread far from their humble Palolo beginnings. They’ve opened for Midnite, Apple Gabriel, Bambu Station, Iba, Eek A Mouse, Don Carlos and the Wailers. They’ll be playing two gigs this weekend; Friday is all about Upcountry at Casanova and on Saturday they’ll cause some serious skanking on the Westside at Hard Rock Cafe. As an added bonus, proceeds of the Hard Rock concert will benefit Musicians on Call—an organization that brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of hospital patients. Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door. www.hardrock.com, 572-0220.

[COMEDY] Okay, I’ll admit it: I kind of had a crush on Andy Bumatai when I was a kid. I said kind of! While I no longer entertain fantasies of becoming Mrs. Bumatai (he’s married now… with teenagers!), I’m still crazy about his comedy. He’s had a long and prosperous streak in stand-up comedy. It all began back in 1977. Of course, there was that time he went MIA on the mainland, but I’m willing to forget about that. Tickets: $25. www.andybumatai.com. 242-7469.

Memories of Uncle Bob Saturday (Mar. 29) 10 p.m., Casanova, Makawao [MUSIC] Saying Roger Steffens knows a lot about Bob Marley is a big, fat understatement. He knew the Rastafari visionary and hung out with him during the West Coast part of his 1979 Survival tour. Steffens has written tons of biographical stuff on Marley, the Wailers and Jamaican musical history, and he owns the largest collection of Marley memorabilia and unpublished photos anywhere. It’s been two decades since Marley passed away, but his music is just as popular as ever and his timeless messages still ripple through new generations of listeners around the world. Steffens is coming with a film presentation on Marley’s life, which is sure to include all kinds of insider stuff. And what better way to celebrate Bob Marley than with a tribute by Maui’s own reggae supernova, Marty Dread and the Kryptones. $10. 572-0220 [JA]
DAY
Sean Kingston in the House Sunday (Mar. 30) Gates open at 5 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater, MACC [MUSIC] Sean Kingston (with special guest Collie Buddz) is coming to little ol’ Maui. Kingston is the young Jamaican behind hits like “Beautiful Girls” and that song “Take You There” or whatever it’s called. It’s kind of funny: in “Take you There,” there’s a line that goes, “Go to the slum, where killahs get hung” and I always took it literally. “Ew! Who wants to go there?!” I used to say, until one day a listener from the Ed & Greg Show on Wild 105.5 let me know that by “killahs,” he probably meant buds and by “hung,” he was referring to the drying process. Makes sense. Tickets: $40 in advance, $50 day of show. www.mauiarts.org, 242-7469.

Co-writer and director Kimberly Peirce returns after her impressive 1999 drama Boys Don’t Cry with an equally empathetic film centered around the U.S. military’s current backdoor-draft, responsible for forcing 81,000 soldiers back into war after multiple tours of duty. Squad leader Sgt. Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe), his best friend Sgt. Steve Shriver (Channing Tatum), and fellow soldier Tommy Burgess (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) return to their Brazos, Texas hometown after spending five blood-soaked years in Afghanistan and Iraq. Following a welcome home ceremony, where Brandon receives a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star from a U.S. Senator, he tries to help Steve and Tommy adjust to civilian life in spite of their violence riddled psyches. Brandon’s own effort to reacclimate to home life is challenged when he is ordered, under the Stop-Loss policy, to return to Iraq.

“With all due respect, fuck the president,” is Brandon’s vehement reply to the commanding officer, who attempts to jail Brandon. What follows is an honest, patriotic soldier’s desperate attempt to find a way out of a malicious bureaucratic booby trap. With the help of Steve’s fiancée Michele (Abbie Cornish—Candy), Brandon goes AWOL and they head to Washington to seek assistance from the senator that called Brandon King a hero. On the run, the American streets that Brandon dreamed of returning to take on a similar war zone quality to Iraq’s unpredictable alleys. tacted the senator and no reprieve will be possible. Starting a new life from scratch in Canada or Mexico becomes the topic of discussion as the road trip meets with dead ends. Kimberly Peirce, whose younger brother recently returned from duty in Iraq, doesn’t push the story for ultimate dramatic effect. She doesn’t track the sensual tension between Brandon and Michele. Their off-limits relationship is understood, and respected. Certain subplots could have been heightened to extract audience sentiment, but this is a movie about people, soldiers and their families, being forcefully submerged into tragedy with no less coercion than a water torture victim being vigorously tortured. It’s a movie full of anger and heartbreak that sticks with you. Maddening, upsetting, and articulate, it’s a story that dares to address a systematic tentacle of government expediency connected to a much larger monster. The media has never really showed the true magnitude of how many Americans are suffering from two wars that we’re told will never end. Stop-Loss elegantly poses the question, “When is enough, enough?” It’s a question that every thinking person on the planet is asking about America’s radical neo-con movement, and one that you might be closer to answering after seeing the film. TICKETS ON SALE The King and I - Apr 4 through Apr 27. This colorful tale set in Thailand in 1862 is based on the motion picture Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. An unusual romance is sparked when the widowed Anna travels to Bangkok to tutor the children of the King and ends up teaching him a thing or two about Western values. Tickets: $20, $18 for students and seniors, $15 all seats on Sundays. Advance tickets on sale at If The Shoe Fits, Wailuku or at www.mauionstage.com. F & Sa 7:30 p.m.; Su 5 p.m. Iao Theater, Wailuku. 242-6969. Opera Rocks - Sun, Apr 6. A high energy classical performance? Sounds like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? Not when the nationally known Stuart Chafetz is around for a guest conducting appearance with soloist and soprano Lea Woods Friedman and baritone Ryan Taylor, along with over 30 members of the Honolulu Symphony. Plus the new and old favorites from the Maui Concert Chorus. Tickets: $35, $24, $15. 2 p.m. Castle Theater, MACC. 242-7469. Taj Mahal and the Hula Blues Band - Thu, Apr 10. Taj Mahal is a musical visionary who’s unique sound blends West African, Caribbean, Cuban and Latin sounds in into country blues style jazz, folk, rock and soul music. Basically, it’s a little bit of everything with a very bluesy flavor. I mean, the guy plays over 20 instruments after all, most notably his own gravelly, sultry voice. When he plays with the Hula Blues Band they put some Hawaiian steel guitar, tenor, baritone and liliu ukulele tones and wind, bass and drum sounds into the mix, too. Tickets: $50, $45, $40. 7:30 p.m. Castle Theater, MACC. 242-7469. Brown `Ohana - Sat, Apr 12. Slack key guitar has been a tradition in the Brown family for more than three generations. Brothers Kevin and Sheldon formed Waiehu Sons, named for their home town on Maui, recorded several albums and performed together for decades around Maui. Then Keven’s son Ikaika picked up the slack key and joined the party, recording albums of his own and performing with his father and uncle. Tickets: $30. 7:30 p.m. McCoy Studio Theater, MACC. 242-7469. Judith Weikle - Wed, Apr 16. When I think of celtic music I think of rowdy Irish pups, but Judith Weikle’s new album, Pirates, Poets and Patriots is a more of a haunting collection of traditional celtic melodies and powerful, heartwrenching tunes. She’ll perform her Emerald Isle repertoire along with Kate MacLeod on the fiddle, Dylan Schorer on the guitar and Diane Rubio on the cello. Tickets: $20. 7:30 p.m. McCoy Studio Theater, MACC. 242-7469. Hapa - Sat, Apr 19. You know them as Hapa. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Local Trends, Seductive Style, Great Photos. Need we say more?
You’re one of the least conflicted people around. This is not to say you don’t have internal dichotomies, or that you never have trouble making up your mind. It’s just that figuring out what you want (and what you don’t) is easier for you than for most people, and deciding on which side of any given line you’ll fall is almost always a no-brainer. This week, however, people may very well mistake you for a Pisces, given how difficult it might be for you to express your position or even understand how you’re feeling. Don’t panic when things don’t immediately resolve into crystal clarity. In this particular case, they may never become clear. You’ll just have to get used to navigating in the fog.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) In your life, there’s time to work and time to play, and you nearly never let the two blend. While not mixing business with pleasure might be a good general rule of thumb, occasionally it can create an experience that’s both fun and profitable. What playfulness can you bring to work that will make it a better place for everyone (including you), but also ultimately more successful? And can you find a way to connect your job to the rest of your life that doesn’t detract from it, but synergistically add to it instead? This week, look for one.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Stop burning your extra energy uselessly, like a zoo tiger restlessly pacing her cage. If you look for them, this week you ought to be able to find several new outlets for that abundant energy. They could easily soak it all up, and then some. This is a good thing, but it could go too far. Ironically, you don’t have quite enough energy or time to realistically handle all of your new distractions, in the long run. Some of them will have to go, but not yet. Take this week to try them all out, so when you have to choose between them, you’ll be able to make an informed decision about which will stay, and which will go.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You know grey areas better than almost anyone. Lately, your whole life is a grey area, with so little etched in black and white that your once-swift decision-making skills have gone out the window. Any decision you make has so many positive and negative ramifications that doing the math and figuring out which route would be best would require an advanced degree in quantum mechanics. There is a light shining through the fog, though. Your indecision is caused largely by a lack of information, too many things you just don’t know. This week, many of the “ifs” clouding your way are likely to become certainties, making the path before you much more clear.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Don’t become too obsessed with status. What’s a title or a trophy, anyway? It’s a symbol at best, and sometimes the bequeathing is so loaded with drama and politics that it’s robbed of all meaning anyway. What really matters are your relationships with other people, regardless of the labels applied to them or to you. Pay attention to those this week, rather than focusing on some artificial bullshit that’s supposed to mean something but actually doesn’t. How those you respect privately regard you is ultimately more important than whatever lameass public recognition you might (or might not) receive.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Forget review. You have this habit of going over and over something ad infinitum—from your shopping list to a love note to any kind of upcoming test of your abilities, until it’s “perfect” in your mind. The irony is that you consequently often end up with a much less-than-perfect result, because you’ve overthought it. Usually your raw first gut inclination is the best one, and your incessant analysis can only rob that of strength. Will you stop doing that, please? This week especially, go with your first response—it will almost invariably be the best one.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Get it out. Whatever it is you’re holding on to that’s making you feel sick, disgorge it this week and get rid of it forever. Personally, I hate vomiting, but I have to admit that when you eat something bad it’s a relief just to get it out. The same can go for the mental and emotional poisons you’re hanging onto, because you’re reluctant to endure the uncomfortable process of ridding yourself of them once and for all. That’s nothing to look forward to, I’ll admit, but after the fact I guarantee: you’ll know it was worth it, because you’ll feel that much better.
It’s Right Around the Corner! Ad Deadline: April 18th Publishes: April 24th
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) This week is about balance. Specifically, it’s about bringing into your life new elements to create equilibrium with some of the extremes you’re already engaged in. Pretend you’re a Libra (only not as boring) and figure out where and how to get the stuff you need to bring symmetry and stability to your life. Be proactive here; these things are not going to just fall into your lap. You can’t simply be open to them; you have to be aggressive about finding them and inviting them into your life. This week, please go do that.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Lose the crutches. I know you’ve used them to hobble this far, and that you’re slightly addicted to them, but the truth is you’re ready to be free of them (and have been for a while now). You may have doubted that, or been simply unwilling to let them go, but it’s past time. Cast them aside. That may prove difficult, but you should ultimately be able to free yourself of them and realize that instead of helping you, they’ve become sort of a hindrance. That realization—and of course the act of letting them go—should make it obvious what you’re now capable of: not walking or limping along as you have been, but running, full speed.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’re like a curious child who’s wandered into her grandparents’ attic. There you’re apt to discover knowledge you never suspected existed—aspects of a parent’s existence before you came along, for example. After you’re done recovering from your shock, you’ll be faced with what may seem like a difficult decision (but is actually a no-brainer). What you do with these secrets is up to you, but I hope you use them for the purpose they’d best serve; whatever new information comes to light this week, allow it to bring you closer to the people it concerns, not increase the distance between you.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
For advertising rates & info: call Brad @ 283-3260, Tommy @ 283-0512, or Cynthia @ 214-4525
Sometimes people talk about you being disconnected from or not present in a situation. I think a lot of that has to do with the general equanimity with which you approach life, so what appears to be absence or diffidence is actually just the laid-back aspect of your nature. But it can be frustrating for those who desire a stronger reaction—good or bad. This week you ought to be able to more ably express your most engaged side in a very convincing way. This doesn’t mean you have to take everything over the top or ham things up. But if you do care, show it. If you have passion for something or someone, find a way to express it.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) There’s a point in most children’s lives where they have to admit to themselves that their imaginary friends aren’t real, and must be let go of. What may surprise you is that this can happen to adults too, except for grown-ups those imaginary friends are usually super-imposed upon real people you know. Without realizing it, you impart entirely made-up qualities onto people who simply don’t possess them. It’s amazing how long these delusions can continue despite a total lack of supporting evidence—sometimes until they are brutally shattered by some real-life event that complete negates any plausible deniability. There is another way, though—you don’t have to wait until the shit hits the fan. This week, open your eyes, and do your best to see at least one of your imaginary friends as they really are. Who knows? They might be someone you like better than the companion you’d made up.

Make me an Offer It’s been a tough week filled with manic deadlines, extra job duties, technical difficulties, sick children, garage sales and a personal bout with the flu. When it rains poop, it pours poop. Big time. Probably the only thing that has kept me somewhat sane throughout the past seven days has been eBay. Oh yes, I’m never too sick or busy to celebrate the ease of shopping online–on arguably the biggest freaking garage sale of the universe–in the comfort of my very own deathbed. I’ve always believed that I have an eBay “problem”—meaning I spend way too much time and money buying a bunch of crap that I really don’t need. Granted, there are other people out there—one of my colleagues included—who purchase way more off eBay than I do; but then again, I’m relatively certain that my colleague’s paycheck is considerably larger than mine. As it stands, in the past 60 days I have spent about $75 on eBay. It’s been a pretty cheap couple of months. Mostly I’ve been buying a bunch of vintage crochet patterns and high-end yarn to fuel my recent obsession with anything and everything crochet. Seems that I’m indeed becoming that elderly Portuguese woman who does handcrafts all night, though I have yet to make any toilet paper covers shaped like dolls. While $75 may not seem like a lot to some, in our household it’s a decent trip to Safeway. To combat this problem, my husband has taken to obsessing over eBay in a whole new way–by selling stuff on it. Which leads me to the whole garage sale fiasco that went on this weekend. Usually, I like garage sales and find them all kinds of amusing. But this time, I was coming down with the flu and too damn miserable to enjoy hagling with people over 50 cents. Did I mention I have letting-go issues? While I hemmed and hawed over whether to sell a used paperback I had already read three times and bought from Friends of the Library for an entire dime, my husband was sticking price tags on things like a madman. “How much do you think we can get for this?” he asked, pointing to our son’s much used play set. “Uh, he’s playing on it right now,” I said. “I don’t think we should sell it.” “He’ll get over it,” he said. “How much do you think?” In the end, I was too ill to care if he sold the actual child with the play set. What we didn’t sell at the garage sale has gone up on eBay. I even listed a few things, including a pair of True Religion jeans that I originally bought on eBay for about $80 (new selling price: $15). Why? Because when I started making fat jokes about my husband’s ex I got major bachi and gained 10 pounds. I can no longer fit the jeans over my heifer-like thighs. Guess making fun of people doesn’t burn nearly as many calories as I thought. Anyway, my beloved True Religion jeans weren’t on the market 24 hours when some skinny bitch snatched them up. Whoops, that comments probably worth an added two pounds. Of course, now my husband is addicted to selling on eBay. In fact, late last night I heard him sneaking around on the computer. “What are you doing?” I asked. “Nuthin’,” he said, looking totally guilty. I let it slide, but I’m keeping an eye out for missing family heirlooms and healthy organs. You know how addicts do crazy things.
Ron Paul has not and will not quit the presidential race. “Inflating the money supply is the easiest form of financing the government. The Federal Reserve, an unelected and unaccountable private organization, pumps more dollars into the economy whenever it chooses. Because the public is forced to accept these bills, the Fed essentially gets away with legally counterfeiting." - Congressman Ron Paul Vote RON PAUL for PRESIDENT
