LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR A HOUSE DIVIDED…
SAVE HONOLUA!
The only thing less efficient than having the government run something is having a non-profit corporation run it. Take the Community Land Trust—a SPECTACULARLY good idea (“Dream Home,” Feb. 22, 2007). Instead of having the County of Maui jump in with both feet and acquire some land—maybe even crown lands—to be leased to owner-builders so they can build their own houses, we are gonna cross our fingers while we watch Tom Blackburn-Rodriguez and John Andersen try and pull this off. Yeah, they raised $100,000 so far. What are they gonna spend the money on? Their own salaries and office rent. I’m a retired Big Island contractor knowledgeable about constructing owner-built Hawaiian “post” houses for $50,000 of wood, glass, plumbing and appliances. I have experience with co-op housing and “worker owned” housing from Germany to California. I’ve emailed and phoned Rodriguez and Andersen three times offering to help and have never even received a reply. Bad start already. Why bring someone who actually knows what they’re doing into the loop? Better to let non-profit corporate bureaucrats run it with their newfound developer friends, so the county is off the hook, and the people pay $200,000 for a $50,000 house. And five years from now we’ll still have our fingers crossed waiting for something to happen. Housing is too serious to be left up to the non-profits. -Rich Zubaty, Kihei
We must stop Maui Land and Pineapple Co. from developing Lipoa Point (The Maui 10, Feb. 1, 2007). Their conceptual plans are morally reprehensive. I do not see how they can consider themselves socially responsible planners with the future in mind and I do not see how they can consider themselves culturally aware. Just because they hire a Native Hawaiian consultant to tell them how they can properly handle and move ancient bones does not mean they are culturally aware. If they were truly culturally aware, they would leave my ancestors’ bones where they are and not handle them at all. They would let my ancestors rest in peace where they wanted to be buried, and build their parking lots, condominiums, golf courses and swimming pools on their own cemeteries. Maui Land and Pineapple claims to be Inclusive, Authentic, Sustainable and EcoSensitive. These are empty promises, words that look good on paper. It may be true they are perhaps 10 percent better than other corporations who are 100 percent about making profit, but that still makes them 90 percent about making a profit. They care about ecology when it is beneficial to them. If they can make the valley thrive, make the environment look good, they can sell it for a big profit. The problem is you can only do this once. Once you sell out, once you develop it, once you ruin it, it’s done; it’s gone forever, gone for future generations. For thousands of years, Hawaiians have lived in harmony with the land based on the concept of ahupua`a. Some say ahupua`u means land division—that is a concise definition. Literally ahupua`a means a heap of stones topped by an image of a pig, because a pig or other tribute was laid on the altar as a tribute to the

What cracks me up is that so many residents can tell you straight out that they don’t want any more golf courses or multi-million dollar homes that none of us can afford but it seems that no one LISTENS to us. Look at Honolua—they want to make all kinds of stuff and from what I see and hear no one wants it. Ms. [Charmaine] Tavares, I know that MLP

has you in the hat but there is no reason to make it so obvious. Why don’t you step up to the plate and do what you were elected to do and that was to serve the residents of Maui, not these FILTHY RICH COMPANIES. Or is the money too good that you forget where your paycheck comes from and who pays for your NICE SIZE RAISE? Altogether it comes down to who decides and ultimately I believe that the mayor holds that power. Or should we all think about taking it to the next level, maybe GOVERNOR or SENATE or even PRESIDENT. We know what we want so it’s up to them. -Dalilha Billianor, Honolua

chief for use of the ahupua`a land which ran from the mountain to the sea. Traditionally, people in a particular ahupua`a were self-sufficient. They took care of the land and the land took care of them and their keiki and their keiki’s keiki. My people had all the resources necessary to live a happy and productive life within a single ahupua`a. In just a few generations, Maui Land and Pineapple’s development of the famous Honoapi`ilani (or the bays of the Chief Pi`ilani) has done tremendous damage to our ecosystems. Fish that our ancestors caught and knew where to find for generations are rapidly disappearing. Many of the various types of limu can no longer be found at places Hawaiians have gathered limus for centuries. Bays and beaches where Hawaiians have fished and camped for centuries are now off-limits. Auwe! Honolua Bay/Lipoa Point was inclusive, authentic, sustainable and ecosensitive, the way my ancestors took care of it—NOT the way that Maui Land and Pine does. To develop it further would be a step in the opposite direction of not only Maui Land and Pineapple’s goals, but also our goals as a community. If they are going to claim to be inclusive, authentic, sustainable and eco-sensitive, it has to be for real. It can’t be only when it makes them look good. It has to be 100 percent of the time. -Aaron E. Dela Cruz, Lahaina

detailing the unexpected burden of dealing with the munitions. The Senate committee has already changed HB 1452, removing a provision for air and water and limiting testing to just Schofield. “I personally feel that rather then see the bill killed we’d change it,” says Senator Lorraine Inouye (D, 1st District), who chairs the committee. “Originally it was asking for too much.” For those who favor of the bill, the general consensus is that it does not do enough to address the problem, but is nonetheless necessary. It “keep[s] the issue alive,” Senator Shan Tsutsui (D, 4th District) says. When the bill passed out of committee, it did so under the disapproving glare of Senator Fred Hemmings (R, 25th District). “This whole hearing process was an indictment against the military,” Hemmings said. “None of the testifiers were from the military.” The state Department of Health (DOH) has concerns of its own. Should the bill be made into law, the DOH would oversee the military personnel carrying out the testing process. “There are no certified labs in Hawai`i to do this kind of testing,” says Laurence Lau, DOH’s Deputy Director for Environmental Health Administration. “They are expensive and would have to be sent to the mainland.” He estimates that the testing would cost $5 million a year. “I think the military should deal with the problem,” Lau says. Bill 1452’s next stop in the coming weeks is the Senate Ways and Means Committee. While the committee has killed similar bills in the past, this one shows some promise. Senator Rosalyn Baker (D, 5th District), the committee’s chair, voted for it in the Health committee last week. MTW

You could say the debate was heated. On Mar. 21, the state senators who sit on the Intergovernmental and Military Affairs Committee took issue with the U.S. Army’s use of depleted uranium munitions at Schofield Barracks on Oahu and a proposed bill that would require soil testing in the area. House Bill 1452 originally called for the testing of soil within 500 feet of all military bases throughout Hawai`i. The process would be used to determine the presence of radioactive material in the soil that could have been deposited by the firing of the weapons. Depleted uranium (DU) is a toxic byproduct of nuclear enrichment. The remaining material is called U-238. The material is extremely dense, which is why the military likes using it for armor piercing munitions, though other materials like tungsten—which is not radioactive—apparently work just as well. DU can cause serious health problems if absorbed through the skin, but its greatest risk comes from ingestion or inhalation. DU self-ignites when exposed to temperatures above 600 degrees Fahrenheit. This is easily achieved when it is fired through armor. When the DU breaks into pieces, it can spontaneously burst into flames, leaving behind a fine radioactive dust, which is easily carried on the wind. What doesn’t blow away will settle into the soil or get washed into streams or other water sources. For many years the military maintained that it had never used DU in Hawai`i. Then in 2005 officials admitted that they had fired considerable DU munitions at the Schofield Range Complex. The evidence came to light when a contractor hired to clear the area wrote an email to an Army official

ROBREPORT
BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET
Maui’s Top 10 Ongoing Environmental Challenges 10 - GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS Biotech mega-corporation Monsanto just announced signing a 99-year lease on Molokai to expand existing seed corn test plots. The biotech/seed corn industry just climbed into second place in the state’s list of top agricultural revenue generators, above sugar and just below pineapple. Meanwhile, worldwide experts are reviewing honey bee Colony Collapse Disorder and pondering the possible causes—pesticides, herbicides and a proliferation of genetically modified crops are under scrutiny. As Maui District Health Officer Dr. Lorrin Pang has stated, probably 90 percent of GMOs aren’t harmful. It’s the other 10 percent we don’t know about. 9 - RUNAWAY DEVELOPMENT Recently, an ad hoc group of surfers, Native Hawaiians and West Maui residents formed the Save Honolua coalition to oppose a new golf course and more luxury homes proposed for the area by the Maui Land & Pineapple Co. The battle has been fought elsewhere, including Speckelsville, Hana and at Wailea 670. You’d think 17 golf courses on one island would be enough. Ditto for the gazillion dollar homes. 8 - MILITARY It’s a problem when the Pentagon thinks it doesn’t need to abide by the same laws that apply to everyone else. Such is the case with its claim that U.S. Navy Sonar testing doesn’t require any legal environmental review. The National Resource Defense Council has taken legal action on the Navy’s Low Frequency Active Sonar testing. So did the California Coastal Commission. Dr. Marsha Green, who has extensively studied the effects of marine noise pollution on whales and other animals, recently rallied support on Maui to challenge the Navy. Meanwhile, the top of Haleakala is now an alternate site for building the Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System) telescope. Because of its ability to track not only asteroids, but also satellites, Jim Albertini of the Big Island believes that Pan-STARRS is part of a first-strike nuclear weapons system. Do we want a facility of that

LC Watch Rookies, Part II When the Maui County Liquor Commission meets on April 11, one third of its membership will be brand new. Well, kind of new. It almost goes without saying that all three of its new members are retirees—young people rarely apply for county boards and commissions, and the Liquor Commission, which grants new liquor licenses, isn’t exactly a stepping stone to high office—but two of the three “new” members are actually Liquor Commission veterans. Merlyn Winters of Makawao spent five years on the commission from 1996 to 2000. “[I] thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” Winters, who’s worked as an office manager, drug store cashier and department store manager, wrote on her commission application. “Having been off for the past six years, I wish to serve again.” But that’s nothing. Robert Tanaka of Wailuku has already spent two full terms on the Liquor Commission. Tanaka, a retired engineer and past president of the Maui Contractors Association, also served five years on the Maui County Police Commission.

sort on Haleakala or Mauna Kea, which would make us a target? 7 - STORM RUNOFF Imagine how healthy our reefs and near shore waters might be without the continual siltation from agricultural lands. Yet, periodic tropical storms deposit tons of material from our ranch lands and sugar cane and pineapple fields into the ocean. Last year, flooding from Kailua Gulch forced the closure of Baldwin Beach Park three times. One of those occasions happened under sunny skies, as a Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar reservoir failed, sending a muddy plume into the sea. And last March, a torrent flowed through a recently tilled cane field and into the ocean, eroding dozens of Hawaiian burials at an undisclosed site. 6 - MONTANA BEACH Can we PLEASE stop calling it Montana Beach? The traditional name for this coastal area is Kapuka`ulua. The Paia Lime Kiln site encompassed sand mining and processing for much of the past century. Now this beachfront parcel has been cooking up controversy because of go-aheads given back in 1999 to develop three luxury beachfront homes. Two

of three former property owners settled their legal disputes, and the County of Maui owns their lots, including a 2,250square-foot, two-story structure, which sits vacant. But what gives Asghar Sadri and his lawyer the idea they can strongarm the county into allowing him to build on a lot he doesn’t even own? Sadri invested $125,000 towards an agreement of sale that is now defunct, since building see TOP 10, page 13
“I’m retired and would like to serve the community and the County of Maui,” Tanaka wrote on his application. “With my experience, I think I can make a little difference in the quality of life for the people of Maui County.” The wild card rookie is Henry Kauka of Molokai, who’s taking over the remainder of Zachary Helm’s term (which ends Mar. 31, 2008). Kauka retired from the county’s Department of Finance in December 2006 after working there 22 years as a vehicle registration clerk and driver’s license examiner. He’s never served on a county board, but his application states that he’s owned a laundromat, tended bar on Molokai, worked as a food and beverage manager in Southern California and spent six years in a U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team. A guy with actual liquor industry experience who’s also blown up stuff underwater? It’s going to be an interesting year.

SWEETNESS A&B has a sweet plan that will boost two of its divisions, reports the Mar. 22 Maui News. Now get ready, folks—this is a really complex, risky proposal: Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of A&B, is going to double its “specialty” sugar production. Are you shocked? I’m shocked. They’re going to go from making 25,000 tons of their elitist, snobby high-end sugar to 50,000 tons. Think of all that money! Think of all that tooth decay! But this is a double whammy for A&B because they’re going to be putting all that new specialty sugar into containers and then placing those containers on Matson Navigation ships that are also owned by A&B! (And I thought they’d just bulldozer a mound of the stuff onto the deck of a freighter and sail away—shows what I know about sugar production). “The specialty sugar will be filling containers that Matson would otherwise be back-hauling empty,” states The Maui News article. See—everybody’s happy!

The company that can’t get its billing and public service divisions in order even though it’s owned by the Carlyle Group—one of the world’s richest private equity firms is now hacking off a limb no one really said was diseased, putting 36 people out of work, according to a Mar. 22 posting on the Pacific Business News website. Isn’t this what big firms do all the time to get profitable? Cut costs? Lay off workers? Things are going to get better, right? MTW

sumers who want to buy hybrids?). Anyway, in all likelihood truly clean-burning cars are probably a long way off. That’s because one of the most powerful Democrats in the House of Representatives is Michigan Congressman John Dingell (D, 15th District). He chairs the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over any potential energy bills. Guess where he gets a huge chunk of his campaign money? According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Big Auto gave Dingell $103,350 during the 2006 election. In fact, the top three contributors to Dingell’s reelection campaign were General Motors ($31,250), Ford ($30,600) and DaimlerChrysler ($20,750). To be fair, Dingell is promoting hybrid engines right along with Bush, though both men stop far short of advocating zero-emission electric cars.

SATURDAY, Mar. 24 The Maui News is reporting that feral pigs are running amok in Olinda? And that they’ve been tearing up the yard of a “mostly vegetarian” woman? Damn, I love Maui.
SUNDAY, Mar. 25
Look out!
WEDNESDAY, Mar. 21 Why must we, the taxpayers who pay for this great nation of ours, constantly baby the automotive industry? Did Henry Ford get a secret amendment to the U.S. Constitution saying, “We the People hereby grant Big Auto whatever the hell they want” or something to that effect? I thought of these unfortunately rhetorical questions after reading the very strange Washington Post story “In Detroit, pressure builds,” which ran in today’s Honolulu Advertiser. The gist of the story is that Congressional Democrats, environmentalists and even corporate and retired military honchos have automakers on the run as far as engine emissions standards are concerned. The story makes it seem like biofuel-powered vehicles are a done deal—so obvious, in fact, that President George W. Bush is out stumping for hybrids right now (though some people advising the president want automakers to get “substantial incentives” from the federal government to make the hybrids, which is asking taxpayers to pay for the same car twice. Hey! How about the government subsidizing the con-
THURSDAY, Mar. 22 So I guess we’re all stuck with the hated Certificate of Need (CON) process. For those not up on the nuances of state law, CON mandates a lengthy series of hearings, discussions and applications before a new hospital can be built in the state. It’s what ultimately killed the proposed Malulani Hospital for Kihei. Anyway, state Representatives—including rookie legislator Joe Bertram III, who represents South Maui—crafted a bill that would revamp or even end the whole CON thing. But yesterday, according to today’s Maui News, a state Senate committee killed that bill in a 3-1 vote. In an ironic turn that should but probably won’t give Malulani proponents pause, their ostensible nemesis Roz Baker cast the lone vote for the bill. Now more than a few hospital boosters have lately been ripping Baker a new one in the pages of The Maui News with some pretty vicious ads saying she hates babies, heart patients and medical professionals. So what’s next? Hopefully a new round of ads calling state legislators monsters who hate old people, heart patients and medical doctors. Man, I can’t get enough of those.
FRIDAY, Mar. 23 Congresswoman Mazie Hirono (D, 2nd District) calls today’s 218-212 vote in the House of Representatives setting a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq “historic,” and it may very well be, though given the way President Bush was snarling while promising to veto the thing, I doubt it. He and the Republicans will call it “micro-managing” the war effort, which may be nonsense—how can you “micromanage” a war that isn’t being managed in the first place?—but it will keep the Democrats fractured on the war. And while the thought of the U.S. Congress dictating an end to the ruinous war is a pleasing thought, I see no reason to abandon the thesis I articulated last week, namely that the Democratic leadership doesn’t want the war to end. There is no way a withdrawal timetable will pass in the U.S. Senate, and even if it did, there’s no way Democrats could muster the majorities needed to override Bush’s assured veto. House leaders like Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D, California) know this, which is why they seem to be spending a

“Today a $6.4 billion juggernaut, Starbucks is a respected and financially successful enterprise that doesn’t spend a hill of beans on advertising,” writes Susan Sunderland. Don’t know about the first part of that sentence, but there’s no question that last part is true. See, Starbucks doesn’t need to buy advertising as long as there are “reporters” like Sunderland perfectly willing to give the company free publicity in the form of embarrassingly fawning cover stories about the company in publications like Midweek, which is owned by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin—in this case, the issue that came out today. Did you know that “hanging out at Starbucks” is “an ultimate pastime”? Or that Starbucks is a “public venue” with “a trendy atmosphere and camaraderie” that has “cornered the market and built a cult based on coffee”? Or that “You don’t stand in line at Starbucks just to buy a cup of coffee. You stop for the experience surrounding the cup of coffee”? Sunderland certainly does—all the above quotes are from Sunderland herself. If she gets anything less than a lifetime supply of free lattes for her “work” she’s been ripped off.
MONDAY, Mar. 26 Today President Bush told automakers that motor vehicles which run on fuel based on something other than petroleum— which actually date back a century or so— are “a major technological breakthrough for the country.” We are so doomed.
TUESDAY, Mar. 27 By the way, Monsanto Hawai`i recently signed a 99-year lease to take control of 500 more acres on Molokai to grow genetically modified crops. That means the company that gave the world the deadly herbicide Agent Orange, Roundup and plants immune to Roundup will now be able to farm 1,200 acres of Molokai, according to the Pacific Business News. It’s been a dandy week, hasn’t it? Anthony Pignataro somehow managed to get this far in journalism without ever drinking coffee. MTW

Tom Cook builds things. He runs TMC General Contractors, sits on the General Plan Advisory Committee and is a past president of the Maui Contractors Association. When critics talk about Mayor Charmaine Tavares being friendly to builders and developers, they point to Cook’s campaign contribution, cited above. That’s why it wasn’t surprising to read in The Maui News that last week Tavares made a trip over to the Maui Contractors Association and told them pretty much exactly what they wanted to hear: it needs to be easier to get things built on Maui. “I sure don’t like the way things are, GIRL EGOTISM IS THE ANESTHETIC THAT DULLS THE PAIN OF STUPIDITY.
The Kibera neighborhood in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Dahravi section of Mumbai, India, are two of the planet’s most appalling slums, but residents have recently discovered well-off international visitors roaming their toxic, fetid urban hells as voyeurs on travel agency-arranged tours. “[Tourists] want to come and take pictures... tell their friends they’ve been to the worst slum in Africa,” lamented one resident of Kibera, speaking to a Reuters reporter in February. But a March Smithsonian magazine piece quoted a Dahravi tour entrepreneur as promising to show the slum’s “positive side”— for instance, the community spirit that discourages street beggars in a nation otherwise teeming with them.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY The U.S. Border Patrol has for three decades worked with a small group of Native Americans who call themselves the Shadow Wolves and who proudly use ancestral techniques to help track down drug smugglers and human traffickers along the Arizona and California borders with Mexico. According to a February Reuters dispatch, the Wolves can detect “barely visible scuff marks” on the ground and know how to follow trails of tiny fibers.

Before her brother was stricken, Bishop’s main healing example was herself, in that she

touted prayer as having enabled her to beat her own breast cancer, but she later conceded that she merely believed herself stricken and that no formal diagnosis had been made. Bishop’s brother was a prominent country and western songwriter, and the family members are contesting his considerable estate.
TWO SOLUTIONS TO BULLYING In November, a mother (with her two daughters and a family friend in tow) rushed to a school in Charlotte, N.C., to defend her 15-year-old son, who had been complaining of bullying. Logically, a defense by one’s mother might not put an end to bullying. And the South Korean government commenced a pilot program in March to supply to-and-from-school bodyguards for kids who complain about bullying, to be funded by private donations. But the bodyguards would not actually sit with kids in class.
PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Brian Ward, 29, was arrested in St. Clairsville, W.Va., in February after a student’s parent saw him acting strange while parked across the street from St. Clairsville High School. The parent reported that Ward appeared to be having a seizure, but police found that that was just his reaction to an illegal inhalant, which was not identified.
LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE In January David Eddings, 75, who has written 27 novels, accidentally destroyed his garage and part of his next-door office while he was flushing out the gas tank of his idle sports car. He said later that his intention was to remove the gasoline from the car to reduce the fire risk, but then he saw that some fluid had leaked onto the garage floor. For some reason, Eddings’ curiosity about the leak caused him to light a piece of paper and toss it onto the puddle, just to find out. “One word comes to mind,” he later told the Nevada Appeal. “Dumb.” MTW
4 - SUPERFERRY Nothing puts the “impact” in Environmental Impact Statement quite like the thought of a 350-foot long twin-hulled catamaran, traveling at 35 to 40 knots, colliding with an 80,000-pound humpback whale. Of course, Hawaii Superferry, Inc. still has their free hall pass from being required to study potential impacts on whales, invasive species, traffic or anything else. We can thank Governor Linda Lingle, her Department of Transportation Director and our own Representative Joe Souki (D, 8th District) for that. Pending any legal decisions in the meantime, Superferry hopes to begin service on July 1. But wait—will the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers require permits for improvements in four harbors, in essence taking the hard environmental look at impacts that the state was unwilling to do? 3 - PEST DE JOUR Just when we got familiar with coqui frogs, miconia, and the erythrina (wiliwili) gall wasp, along comes puccinia psidii! Oh, you haven’t seen the hundreds of decimated rose apple trees along roadsides through Haiku and out the Hana Highway? What might first be mistaken for mango blossoms is the withered new growth affected by what is known as ohia rust. First observed on Oahu in 2005,
2 - RECYCLING In many California communities yard trimmings and branches, as well as other recyclables, are picked up at curbside. If this service were available on Maui, huge amounts of compostable green waste could be diverted from our landfill. But local compost operations need help. EKO Compost has garnered national awards for their operation, which utilizes green waste and sewage sludge. But they are bursting at the seams of their limited permit area and have been forced to give away mulch to make room. In Kihei, Maui Earth Compost finally passed Department of Health hurdles last summer and reopened their facility. A County recycling grant award of $75,000 was intended to allow them to accept residential green waste for free, just like EKO. Though approved by Public Works and the Mayor, the grant got stuck on the desk of the Budget Director, who was hung up on the wording, even after two revisions. Auwe! And the number one environmental challenge facing Maui is… 1 - CANE BURNING Year in and year out, HC&S continues to harvest the majority of their 37,000 acres by burning, citing astronomical costs to retrofit their equipment and operations in order to “green harvest” the cane. For years, a debate has smoldered over the archaic practice of igniting enormous bonfires as a precursor to hauling sugar cane to the mill. Last month, The Maui News published a letter from Frank Gomes of Makawao. Gomes wrote that we can no longer ignore how cane burning contributes to global warming. “It would be extremely irresponsible to continue the burning of the fields when there are other more responsible and productive ways of processing sugar,” he wrote. He added that it’s time to look at this with new eyes and open minds. Bravo! Though it’s hard to imagine how the sugar industry can survive without some sort of ultimate makeover, stopping the burn would be a wonderful place to start. Any changes HC&S makes towards ethanol production or diversification into food crops would not only be environmentally wise investments in our future, but also sorely needed good public relations for their often maligned plantation. 5 - SAND MINING A year ago, following two years of research, Mayor Alan Arakawa transmitted the Maui Inland Sand Quantification Study to the County Council. Given the prediction that current rates of excavation and shipping to Oahu would exhaust the available resource in five years, he recommended a moratorium on sand exportation. A Council committee studied the issue and did nothing. In 2005, the sand barge sailed for Oahu 96 times. Last year, the numbers were similar, but a much bigger barge was utilized, beginning last July. As Maui’s beaches erode, sand replenishment is a favorable option. Inland sand may be cheaper and cleaner than offshore benthic sand. On April 24, Hawaiian Cement will petition the Maui Planning Commission for a Special Use Permit to continue sand excavation on an Alexander & Baldwin parcel near Waikapu. To date, they have disturbed more than 60 Hawaiian burials on that site.

Seated in her modest Planned Parenthood office in Kahului, Dr. Ann Rahall’s eyes light up when she talks about what she does for a living. Rahall, who has worked with Planned Parenthood of Hawai`i (PPH) for more than a decade, recently moved to Maui to become the first physician in PPH’s Kahului clinic. “I love taking care of women,” she says. “It’s very satisfying to not only help them with medical problems, but to educate them on taking care of themselves. To do this, it’s important to know about the woman’s life in terms of relationships, family, work, stress, exercise and eating habits. I prefer a holistic approach to health care.” Rahall’s credentials are impressive. She’s a Board Certified OB/Gyn (Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology) as well as Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. On Thursday, Feb. 22, the Kahului Clinic held an open house to publicize Rahall’s arrival. It began at 3 p.m., and by 4:30 p.m., the clinic’s small waiting room was packed with people. Among them were several PPH officials who had flown from Oahu. The mood was festive as potential patients and others who stopped by were greeted warmly at the door. Everybody got a full tour of the clinic. Afterwards, attendees headed to the snack table, where a smorgasboard of food awaited them. As the sun began to set, several of the visitors from Oahu gathered around a window to gaze at the West Maui Mountains. The sky was streaked with hues of orange and purple. “Well maybe we should just move the headquarters

out here,” says Melinda Wood, President of the PPH’s Board. “There’s less traffic, it’s more relaxed, and it’s so beautiful.” Mention the name Planned Parenthood to most people, and the first thing they’ll probably think of is abortion. PPH officials would like to change that. “I think the hardest thing is to reduce the stigma about going to a clinic,” Wood says. “People assume that if you’re going to a clinic it’s about sex. It can be about other things as well.” “We really have a three-pronged approach,” said Barry Raff, PPH’s Chief Executive Officer. “The clinic provides health services, and then we have the sexual education in schools and a public policy office… A lot of people think that we are just a place that performs abortions, but in reality that is only about 15 percent of what we do.” Planned Parenthood of Hawai`i (Disclosure: they advertise in this publication) was founded in 1966. Since then, it has grown to three clinics on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. They have an annual budget of $2.5 million, 85 percent of which comes from the patient fees. The other 15 percent comes from donations. They see 7,500 patients a year. “Most of our services are geared towards the cashpaying patient, those who don’t have health insurance,” Raff says. “We do accept almost all insurance and half of our patients do use their insurance.” Among the services provided are annual exams, a wide variety of contraceptives, HIV and other STD testing and counseling, pregnancy counseling, midlife/menopause services and abortions. Payment for all services is on a sliding scale.
This year Planned Parenthood Hawai`i wants to pass four pieces of legislation. The goals of these bills are to provide state funding for family planning, add a requirement for emergency rooms to offer emergency contraception to rape victims, require organizations receiving state funding for sex education to only teach medically accurate sex ed and require insurance coverage for the HPV vaccine. “Hawai`i is fourth in the nation in laws, legislation, services, etc.,” Raff says. “We are given an ‘A’ rating by Planned Parenthood in those areas.” Though he added that they still have work to do in implementing legislation. Other states apparently have it much harder. “We have no targeted regulation of abortion clinics here,” he says. “In states that are anti-choice, they regulate everything—the size of the bathroom, the amount of airflow in the clinic. And it’s only for the abortion clinics, nothing else. They have regulations requiring that women wanting abortions come in to see a physician, and then they have to go home to think about it for 48 to 72 hours. Even then, 85 percent of counties don’t have abortion providers. Women have to travel hundreds of miles. It’s an access issue. Here, we have a provider in every county.” “The culture here is very accepting,” Wood adds. “They let people make their own decisions. People here are very socially progressive.” In fact, it’s hard to think of a more desirable place for a family planning doctor than Maui. Rahall moved here from Oahu two and a half months ago with her two sons. “It’s wonderful here,” she says. “There’s less traffic, it’s more relaxed, and the wind is better for windsurfing.” She added that she’s happy with the great variety of yoga available, which she’s been practicing for 12 years. Rahall knew she wanted to be a doctor by the time she was in junior high. “I just knew I wanted to help people,” she says. That realization took her from her hometown of Beckley, West Virginia to Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. After that she completed her residency at the University of Southern California. “At that time, it [the residency] was probably my biggest accomplishment,” Rahall says. “Four years at one of the busiest hospitals in the country. In that four years we delivered 45,000 babies.” It was that residency that brought her to Hawai`i. “I had a two month rotation at Kaiser on Oahu during the third year of my residency,” she says. “I really fell in love with the place and wanted to come back.” A year later, with her residency completed, Rahall did just that. When she arrived on Oahu in 1996, she found an opening at Planned Parenthood and has been there ever since. Within a year she had moved from a staff position to take over as part-time medical director. She still holds that title, which brings her back to Oahu one day a week. Rahall has been seeing patients at the Kahului clinic and is available for appointments three days a week. Before she took appointments here, patients sometimes needed to see other hospitals for certain procedures. Now
they have more flexibility. “It’s exciting to be able to expand reproductive health care services for the women of Maui,” she says. “We see clients of all ages, from teens through post menopausal women.” Lots of clients. So many, in fact, that it’s stretching the clinic’s resources. “At first I thought it would be difficult to get into places, but it really isn’t,” says Sonia Blackiston, PPH’s sole full-time sex educator. “If you look at the stats, parents and teens support [the education].” Recently Blackiston hired a part-time assistant, but she still says her biggest challenge is being understaffed. “My assistant is a huge help, but she can only really work for 16 hours a week,” Blackiston says. She says requests for her program should be made two to three months in advance, and schools should call even earlier than that. “With schools, I would like them to call as soon as possible,” Blackiston says. “I had people last August making appointments for May. But if we can fit them in at the last minute, we will.” Blackiston provides what she calls “medically accurate” sex ed. It teaches that abstinence is the only 100 percent effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), but also provides information on contraceptives and health questions for those who don’t practice abstinence. “We help anybody who needs info,” she says. “Public and private schools, community organizations, and even faith based organizations… None of the information is directive or fear based. We help each person define sex and abstinence. Your definition of abstinence should be based on your own personal values and beliefs. You need to know what your values and limitations are for your definition and be able to communicate that with your partner.” She added that Hawai`i’s federally funded “Try Wait” program—which is run by Catholic Charities and tries to convince teens to wait until marriage before having sex—does nothing to address these issues. Raff agrees. “We teach abstinence-based education,” he says. “Abstinence is the only 100 percent sure way to prevention, but we don’t ignore kids who will have sex. For those kids we teach the benefits of contraception and the prevention of disease and unwanted pregnancies. One of the tenets of the federally funded ‘abstinence only’ program states that if you have sex before marriage, it will cause harm to a person’s mind and body.” Blackiston says there’s no research to support the notion that sex before marriage is harmful. “We are not out there to teach people how to have sex,” she says. “We are teaching them how to make healthy choices. Medically accurate sex education actually delays [teens] beginning to have sex.” Raff added that the Hawai`i is already ranked 12th in the nation for unwanted pregnancies. “Education is key to reducing them,” he says. “If we do that, abortion goes down.” For more information or to make an appointment, call the Kahului Clinic at 871-1176. ONO KINEGRINDS
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM
Maui Ocean Grill Small place, big choices Let’s start at the end, with dessert. “You really should try the fried ice cream,” Penny Thomas, the young woman working the counter at Maui Ocean Grill, told us. “It’s soo bad, but it’s soo good.” With a description like that, how could we refuse? Thomas then handed us a single scoop of extremely cold vanilla ice cream, which was encased in a fairly thick and slightly cinnamony crust and then covered with chocolate sauce, strawberries, whipped cream and crushed walnuts. Wendy, who took the photos accompanying this story, said it tasted like a sundae wrapped in a churro. Later Neto Soledad, one of the grill’s owners, laughed when I told him that. “We make the fried ice cream every other day,” he said. “It’s one of our biggest sellers.” Though it’s located in the Maui Marketplace’s Kau Kau corner food court in the old Aloha Grill location— Soledad worked there for two years before buying the place last year–Maui Ocean Grill doesn’t offer typical food court dining. “Kahului
needed something a little healthier,” said Yuri Soledad, who along with his brother Neto and Mauricio Abreu, is also a part owner.
Maui Ocean Grill Maui Marketplace, 270 Dairy Rd., Kahului, 893-0263. Open daily, 10 a.m.-9 p.m $
But it’s Neto who designed the menu. Currently attending Maui Community College’s culinary program, he moved to Maui from Brazil in 1999. He’s worked at a small bakery in Paia, a restaurant on the Wailea Blue golf course, a cinnamon roll place, a catering operation in Waikapu, Bella Luna in the Diamond Resort and the old Aloha Grill. His Neto’s Salad is apparently one of the grill’s more popular items. Start with a bed of greens, then add sprouts,
carrot shavings, tomatoes, goat cheese crumbles, balsamic dressing and then a huge slab of tender ahi that tasted like it was just taken from a backyard grill. Wanting something a bit more filling, I ordered the fish ‘n chips, another popular item. A few minutes later Thomas handed me a plate holding four fingers of fried Mahi sitting atop an overflowing bed of skinny, delicious French Fries. Unlike some places that plaster their fish with enough batter to poke your gums when taking a bite, Maui Ocean Grill’s fish had very little covering, but a great deal of flavor, even without dipping into the dollop of tartar sauce that came with the plate. Eating the fish took very little time—the fries, a bit longer. “I make my own mixture of crumbs and herbs,” Neto said. “Some places you need the tartar sauce because the fish has no flavor.” Even the cole slaw was different—and by “different,” I really mean “crispy,” a word seldom used to identify slaw of any kind. “I don’t really like the cole slaw served here [on Maui],” Neto Soledad told me. “You can taste the mayo, or it’s too sweet. We wanted to offer some balance.” Of course, Maui Ocean Grill also offers an array of plate lunches, including kalua pork, Maui Cattle Co. steak, blackened or charbroiled fish, and burgers—made with your choice of chicken, fish, beef, garden or taro patties. It’s not a big place, but there are a lot of choices. MTW

Booty-Dance Extravaganza Saturday (Mar. 31), 5:30 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater, MACC [HIPHOP] This is gonna be off-the-shizzle, fo-nizzle. Ya dig, homey? Fine-ass shorties, do-rags, lots of baggy jeans, Sean Jean shirts, Baby Phat tanks, and dry-humping. I’m pretty sure that I’m gonna get sufficiently “happy” before I even stumble through the gates. You know what I’m talking about, doggie—Spring Jam ‘07! You’ve been hearing about it for weeks on the radio and it’s finally happening this weekend! Do you have something to wear? I bet Spotlight Fashions at the Maui Mall has been crazy busy with shoppers this week. Do you think the gold chain that hangs down to my crotch is good, or should I go with an understated popped-collar? Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Baby Bash, the new NB Ridaz and Maui’s own Gorilla Jazz (see p. 28)... But you already knew that. Word to yo mutha. Tickets: $35. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Time to HA Saturday (Mar. 31), 10 p.m. at Charley’s
Twisted Sisters
[ROCK] If you’ve never heard local musician Howard Ahia, or haven’t checked him out in awhile, you’re in for a treat. Seriously. There’s nobody else who rocks as sweetly as he does. His debut release, It’s Killing Me, is an alternative rock album of sonically smooth, emotionally deep moods and melodies, with a solid, edgy core. Hits like “Fly Away” and “You’re So Right” are well suited for mainland college radio, and those of us music lovers who appreciate original, rockin’, artistically intelligent music. Cover: $7.
Thursday (Mar. 29), 9:30 p.m. at Casanova’s [FOLK ROCK] The Webb Sisters, Charley and Hattie, have cute names. Not to mention, according to photographic evidence found on their MySpace page, they’re hot. To top it all off, they’re musically talented and from the UK—which means that they probably have adorable, smart-sounding accents. I love them already, or is this feeling just pure jealous hate? So hard to tell the difference. The Webb Sisters have been playing music together since they were little kids (aww! how sweet is that?) and are stopping on Maui as they travel around the world spreading messages of good cheer and folk, pop-rocky music. Tickets: $10 advance, $15 at door. [LILIANA BEGLEY]

Dancing by Internet
Punk, Reggae and Sarcasm
Saturday (Mar. 31), 7:30 p.m. at Seabury Hall
Friday (Mar. 30), 10 p.m. at Longhi’s, Lahaina; Saturday (Mar. 31), 9 p.m. at Paradice Bluz [SEATTLE ALT. ROCK] Some important things to know about Seattle’s Nigel Mustafa, who play Longhi’s this Friday: 1. They openly and pleasantly refer to themselves as “tards”-specifically, the “world leaders in Avant ‘Tard Geek Rock.” 2. They play a song, “My Mom’s in Jail Tonight,” which apparently summarizes the experiences of a band member’s mother, who may or may not have done time for felony stalking. 3. Two of their newest songs, “We Need Beer” and “Rasta Ninja” are whimsical blends of punk, reggae, and sarcasm, and are available for download on www.nigelmustafa.com. 4. The have warned that on Friday “German tourists will frantically try to translate that which does not exist in Deustchland-humor.” 5. They’ve apparently never heard of David Hasselhoff. 6. They’re highly likely to hurl electric bolts of lightning tunes, humor, and good fun down upon Longhi’s Koa wood dance floor (and highly unlikely to play “Puff the Magic Dragon,” a relief to any regular to Longhi’s Friday nights). [COREY NIELSEN]
DAY
[CONTEMPORARY DANCE] Maui’s TILT Contemporary Dance Company is presenting “Off Center,” a David CutlerRenee Beauvais collaboration of virtuosic, eclectic music and balletblended modern dance. Of course, it’s a collaboration that spanned 2000 miles, with performers auditioning online. “The Internet has been my connection to the global dance community for the last decade,” says choreographer Renée Beauvais, in the production’s press release. “I posted my audition notice in virtual studios across the country. I viewed video samples from potential dancers on their web sites or public sites such as You Tube and My Space.” That’s virtually awesome. Anyway, this weekend’s real performance on Maui will feature live music by Tri Facto. The production is followed by a “meet the artists” reception, where pupus by John Paul Fine Foods and Pizza Fresh will be served. Seabury Hall is located at 80 Olinda Road, Makawao. Tickets: adults $25, keiki $17. Call 572-3094. [KIRA SABINI]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Diamond Out of the Rough Joseph Gordon-Levitt navigates a bank heist gem A fresh take on a well-worn genre— the bank heist movie—infuses unexpected humor from Jeff Daniels’ brilliantly modulated performance as Lewis, a blind companion to Chris Pratt’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) mentally challenged bank janitor. Writer/director Scott Frank (screenwriter on Out of Sight and Minority Report) perfectly balances unpredictable plot twists with emotional pangs as car crash victim Chris tries to negotiate a normal small-town life in spite of constant memory lapses that impugn his sanity. A nasty gang of thieves exploits Chris’s vulnerability by making him act as a lookout for a robbery at the bank where he works as a night custodian. High school hockey champ Chris suffers a traumatic brain injury when the car he’s driving crashes on a highway lit only by starlight. He’s travelling at high speed with his girlfriend next to him and a couple of friends riding in the back seat when he cuts off the headlights so they can savor the brilliance of the stars on a miraculously clear summer night. The scene says a lot about Chris as a character blinded by his own romanticism. He loves the contrast of speed with the limitless dark beauty of the night sky, but he also relishes scaring his friends who yell at him to turn the headlights back on. Here is an innocently selfish boy doomed to be physically punished and emotionally haunted for a moment of blithe thoughtless-
ness. The scene is sublimely tranquil and yet fraught with excruciating suspense. Several years later, Chris is a walking ball of dislocated longing and debilitating forgetfulness. He keeps a spare key in his sock as a safeguard against his recurring habit of locking himself out of his car. Meticulous lists guide Chris through endless days where a task as simple as opening a can threatens to bring his survival to a halt.
The Lookout
★★★★★ Rated R/102 mins.
He makes inappropriate passes at his mental health counselor, and lashes out at Lewis, his blind roommate and mentor. Like a high-functioning autistic person, Chris struggles with social interaction. During a visit to a neighborhood bar, former high school peer-turned-smalltimecriminal Gary Spargo (Matthew Goode— Match Point) spots Chris and strikes up a “friendly” conversation. Sizing up Chris’ acute need for female attention, Gary seizes the opportunity to introduce him to Luvlee Lemons (Isla Fisher) whose phony name carries on her status as former stripper. Throughout Chris’ headlong plunge toward victimization at the hands of Gary, Lewis is a recurring voice of reason. But

Forget the bank–let’s just rob the bar
it’s a Thanksgiving dinner that Lewis attends, with Chris and his wealthy yet apathetic family, which brings Chris’ back story to a boil. Lewis bears witness to Chris’ unbalanced familial reality, and the uncomfortable event marks a turning point for the elder Lewis to view Chris from a more fatherly position—Lewis dreams of opening a diner that he and Chris will run. The fairly botched bank robbery that transpires is the centerpiece of the movie. Its aftermath tests Chris’ unique ingenuity of planning his actions backwards in order
to save himself and Lewis. There are surprises here, and for all of the film’s apparent similarities to Chris Nolan’s Memento, The Lookout proves a much more entertaining and satisfying experience. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Mysterious Skin) is the new Ed Norton; he’s an actor of nuanced subtlety whose careful choices are as transparent as they are visible. His contribution fulfills The Lookout as that rare character-driven movie screenwriters dream of creating, and then rush to copy after seeing it. It’s a gem of a movie that beckons repeated viewing. THE TIGER AND THE SNOW - (NR) Subtitles - I can’t call it a comedy because it takes place in occupied Iraq, where the people are screwed enough without some washed up director/actor trying to woo their pretty women. Benigni gets on my nerves–he shouldn’t need to pay his wife to tell him he’s good in bed and he definitely needs a new story line because he used this one last time (Life is Beautiful). 110 min. Fun with Guns Gorilla Jazz shoots off about music, Maui and MySpace It’s noisy whenever the six members of Gorilla Jazz get together. Usually it’s in their practice studio, onstage at a gig or at a table in a quiet bar, with the ruckus generally consisting of much laughter, music and energetic discussion.

But here in the middle of a ravine in Upcountry Maui, the sound of Noah Francis loading a shell into the chamber of his borrowed 12-gauge shotgun silences everyone. He raises the pump barrel, aims and fires. His target explodes and the excited chatter and rousting continues. “Oh, you’re a natural, Noah,” says Easton H. (a.k.a. “Quest Eons,” vocalist and MC). “I didn’t know GJazz was a gangsta group!”

“I’ve never shot a shotgun before,” says Noah, G-Jazz’s bassist. “But I pumped myself up with a bunch of butt-rock on the way up.” “Usually it’s the gorillas getting shot!” says Beau Sun, MC. “I’m gonna come down here every Sunday for practice,” says James “Cotton” Hartman, guitarist. “I dunno,” says Easton, as he takes a seat on the bench. “I’m not a gun kind of guy. I have ADHD—you don’t give people with ADHD a gun, man.” There are ducks everywhere. But fortunately, they are not the intended targets of this day’s shoot at Maui Trap & Gun Club. Instead, owner Art Shepard is instructing the guys on how to hit clay pigeons—an activity that’s providing a welcome release from the pressures G-Jazz face as they lead up to opening for their biggest show

ever, this weekend’s Spring Jam ’07 featuring Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. It was Easton and George Jackson (a.k.a. “Chef Strum,” electric ‘uke player) who originally came up with the concept of Gorilla Jazz, while also performing with Amphibeus Tungs, a mainly MC/DJ hip-hop crew, about a year ago. But it wasn’t until last fall when the two starting hanging out around gigs in Kihei, often jumping on stage with The Easy and Byron Brown and the Derelicks, that they began formulating their unique sound. “I wanna do ‘70’s choruses with dope hip-hop rhythms,” says Easton. “Like Earth, Wind and Fire, Al Green, Mos Def—where did the soul go in music?” James Bowersox, who was drumming for The Easy, began jamming with Easton and George
first. They then recruited Noah, who was initially bassist for The Easy then Byron Brown. Soon Beau, who was also rapping for Amphibeus Tungs, joined too. By winter, the group was ready to play gigs. But something was missing. The band was convinced they needed Cotton’s edgy riffing. Except he wasn’t around—a few months prior, Cotton had left The Easy and Maui and was trying to re-infiltrate the music scene back in his hometown L.A. Undeterred, his former bandmates on Maui began a relentless phone-campaign to bring him back. “It got to the point where I was, like, ‘Okay, I’ve got a band and a job and friends waiting for me in paradise,” said Cotton.
“What am I doing here in L.A.?’” Once G-Jazz was complete in midDecember, they began gigging all over Maui. And the response was electric. By fusing the hip-hop sounds of Amphibeus Tungs with the islandrock-ska-metal of The Easy, two oftendisparate crowds also came together, building a fanbase larger than the two bands had previously experienced. They were even cited on MySpace’s home page, further building their popularity and leading to a successful show at Pipeline Café on Oahu. They’ve only been playing for three months and yet an album is in the works, as well as a mainland tour in the fall. And then, of course, there’s this weekend’s show at the MACC. But at the shooting range, George is having second thoughts. “Dude, I’m gonna get hurt,” he says, as he walks away from the firing line. “Don’t get weird, George,” says Noah. “What? You’re not gonna do it?” asks Easton from the bench. “Are you being a poon? This is going in the article, George!” Easton turns to me and lowers his voice. “Just put I have a broken finger,” he says. “See?” Meanwhile, Cotton is in the lead
with the number of targets he’s hit, which impresses Art, and is really starting to rile up Easton. “That fucker—no wonder he wants to come here,” Easton says. “He picks the thing he’s good at!” “Well, next time we can do the pony rides,” says the six-foot-two Beau, smirking. “Next time we can do the giraffe chasing, Beau,” says Easton, who is less tall. The guys convince George to return to the lineup, and he hits his mark with no incident. He smiles. “That’s my boy!” Beau says. “That shit feels good, man,” George says. “Powerful.” “George is a Happy Valley marksman,” Easton says, proudly. “Seriously, man, he could hit a Somalian chicken!” “A lot of people are attracted to the mental aspects of shooting,” Art says. “You’re just trying to control your mind and what your hands are doing.” “I need a beer,” George says. Maui Trap & Gun Club is located at 499 Hali`imaile Rd., Hali`imaile, 572-0689. They’re open Wednesdays, 4:30-10 p.m., Sundays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and for private practice. MTW

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I often think of Rams as charmed, practically unstoppable people. You don’t necessarily have easy existences, since some people don’t share my wholehearted appreciation of you. Those people don’t matter, though, because they can’t really hold you back. In fact, the only thing that can decisively trip you up is your own hypocrisy, should you fall prey to it. Keep your actions and words perfectly consistent with one another, however, and there’s virtually nothing you can’t accomplish.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) A humble microorganism called toxoplasma gondii (which we catch from cats) may be changing our entire race. It messes with our moods (making women friendlier and men more paranoid and neurotic (bad news for lonely cat ladies). Would-be mothers infected with the parasite are also twice as likely to give birth to boys than they would be otherwise. If you’re tired of Bullishly banging your head against a wall in order to create change, maybe you should take your inspiration from this microscopic animal, and slip between the cracks of the wall, instead of trying to knock it down. Most people won’t even notice, then, when you totally rearrange their world.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I have high hopes for you, Gemini. I’m not talking about how you’re going to save the world. My expectations have more to do with how you’re going to rock April Fool’s Day. You’ve pulled off some seriously good pranks in past years, but this year I’m hoping you’ll outdo yourself, if you can. You’ve a couple friends who could really use serious distractions from some of the other shit going down in their lives. One of your carefully planned silly stunts would be just the thing.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Libra is the sign of partnership, so when the Moon, your ruling “planet,” is full in Libra on the 2nd, I would imagine your thoughts and actions might in some way pertain to that topic. You haven’t been especially good at partnership in the past; it’s always a balancing act between any two people, but you have to admit many of your relationships have been rife with inequity of one sort or another. You may never be your partner’s best friend as well as his or her lover, but this week, if you’re open-minded and creative, you might move a few steps closer to true equality.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) I don’t know if I’ve become more like my dog or if he gets it from me, but neither of us is particularly socially needy. He’s perfectly happy when someone decides to come over and pet him; he’ll roll obligingly onto his back in hopes of a good belly rub. But he’s not especially inclined to go asking for it. I mention it because this week is a good one to address any lingering vestiges of emotional neediness you might still have, and come at least a little closer to a place of being happy with whatever attention is already coming your way.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) What you’re doing is aiming at too many birds in too many different trees. For someone who likes to accomplish a lot, you’re not being especially efficient about it. This is a good week to fix that, if you want. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference you can make by dropping one or two activities (in favor of a couple better-suited ones) and subtly rearranging your schedule. Try it for a week; if you’re not bringing down twice as many metaphorical birds with the same number of stones, I’ll be greatly surprised.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
SECURITY
You can push the gas pedal to the floor all you want, but you’re not going to go very fast unless you also shift gears. Where’s your famous flexibility, Libra? With the Full Moon in your sign on the 2nd (and during the entire week leading up to it) you’ll have plenty of fuel in your tank; it’s just a matter of making the mental shift required for you to make good use of it. How can you do that? It’s simple. The first step is taking your foot off the brakes. After that it’s all about not crashing into anything—which will be far easier than you imagined.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I love to drink a cup of really good coffee or high-quality wine, but that doesn’t mean I’m a total snob about it; if all that’s available is a mediocre cup of joe or some cheap merlot, I make do. You have your own well-developed preferences regarding certain things (Lovers? Chocolate? Cars?) but you shouldn’t get carried away, since that would just limit you, needlessly. Sometimes the stuff you especially like simply isn’t obtainable, like this week. That’s when it’s in your best interest to do your best to enjoy whatever you can get, rather than going entirely without.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) I’d never put it past a Cancer or an Aries to publicly scold someone whose actions they disapprove of, but that’s not usually your style. You avoid embarrassing people in that way; instead, you tend to deliver your corrections privately, making good use of your ability to talk companionably to virtually anyone in a way they can hear. However, sometimes a public spanking is the only way someone will actually change his errant ways, and sometimes, like this week, it may fall on you to deliver that embarrassing verbal ass-kicking. Don’t hold back. It’s for their own good, and yours.

TSA is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Someone in Chongqing, China, reminds me of you. A developer refused to meet the price he asked for his house, so he refused to sell it, forcing the developer to take drastic measures, digging around the property; now his home is perched on a tiny island with a 30-foot drop on all sides. Just like that brave (or greedy, depending on who you ask) little guy, you’ve stuck to your guns; you’re also similarly isolated as a result. He might stubbornly live in those ridiculous and stressful circumstances but doing something like that would ultimately make you miserable. You can’t win every battle, and the price of this one is too high, anyway. It’s time for a little flexibility on your part, I think.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It might feel tricky adjusting to a new paradigm or a different way of doing things, but someone as brilliant as you shouldn’t have this much trouble re-calibrating your mental habits. This is something like switching from Fahrenheit to Celsius. You might not, at first, know if 30° is hot or cold weather, but given a little time to adjust, you’ll figure it out. All that’s required is a little more information and an open-mind. You can get the information. Can you also provide the open mind?
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You Fish are in my bad books. I sent sweet happy birthday emails to five of my favorite Fish last month, and not a single one bothered to even send a “hey, thanks,” response. I know I was probably the victim of good intentions they failed to follow through on, but it still sucks. Be careful and honest with yourself. My friends may have meant to write me the juicy, rich emails I deserve, but they should have realized they might not get to it, and at least sent cursory, two-minute messages in the meantime. How are your ambitions outstripping your actions? Aim for the moon all you like, but before you do, make sure you send a shot towards something that’s much easier to hit, first.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM
My Great A.S.S. Blessed is the person who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy evidence of the fact. - George Eliot The results are in. Not counting the surprising number of you I saw out who had to mention how you still have yet to turn in your mind-blowing answers to my Great American Sex Survey, I gleaned much from those who followed through and… submitted… to my sexual inquisition. To you, I throw Kama Sutra honey dust over your toes and applaud your high Libido Quotient. There were more surprises than not here and, lucky for you, I am the type to kiss and tell. Nearly twice as many women as men responded—further proving my theory that women are more, uh, responsive sexually—however, men were more forthcoming in providing additional commentary with their answers. Yes, this is will be an innuendo-laden column. Protect yourself. Of the straight women who responded—about 60 percent of my readers, apparently—you’re across the board in varying degrees of relationship status. Those not married prefer condoms; my gay and straight married women don’t find the need at all. And all of you have cheated at some point, although at least one of you decrees that if both victims know, it’s not necessarily “cheating.” Another sees it as no reason to quit drinking tequila. Sock it to ‘em, sister! Those of you straight girls who are in a relationship or married mostly find your sex lives exciting and fulfilling. This is delightful news. Also, most of you don’t find the need for casual sex anymore, given how you stock up on those Costco-sized battery packs. And this info just gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling as well: you’re not only down with the motion lotion and dildos, you wanna know why I didn’t mention the handcuffs and vibrating cockrings. Sigh. Yeah, me, too. Now, my gay sisters say they never fake orgasms. Don’t worry, I’ll be getting the 411 on those workshops they’ll be conducting later. Just as titillating? The knowledge that ALL you girls had, or would have, sex on the first date, given the right circumstances. No pressure there, guys. But the best news of all, the tidbit that doesn’t shock as much as it tickles me in that one spot I’ll never tell, is that nearly all you gals—gay, straight or bisexual only when drunk—prefer to have sex at least once a day. Cue the trumpet. “Quality” is the predictable common key to great sex, with “variety” following close behind—ouch—for both sexes. Still predictably, a few more women wouldn’t mind a bit more passion—men, more quantity—to beef up their time in the sack. And as for my brave and studly men, those of you who are committed also find your sex lives exciting and fulfilling. Gay or straight, a surprising number of you—the majority, in fact—say you’ve never cheated in a relationship, but have been cheated on. And every last one of you has an adult video or 20 in your toy chest. Can we pause for the crickets here? Anyway, you men are a bit more tolerant when it comes to the need for casual sex—even given the limitations and possible television coverage if you live on the Westside—and yet, you’re unbelievably divided when it comes to having sex on the first date. Still, like your fellow non-fellows, you’d prefer the coitus at least once a day. Can we all please get on the same page now, people? So to all my dear readers for sharing these intimate details with me about your lives in bed, once again, spank you very much. Samantha Campos has no idea if 100 percent medical-grade silicone composition, with a flexible but firm silicone core and a wonderful Vixskin silicone outer shell, gives and squishes like the real deal.
