LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR MORE ROB FANS

NOT A SPAM FAN, BUT… I am sending you this email in regard to your [Jan. 17, 2008 Coconut Wireless] article… on SPAM as an icon. You seem like a guy that might have a sense of humor, but I don’t find it funny to pick on someone that is supporting their product. I am not a SPAM fan myself but appreciate the loyalty this product manager has to his brand. That being said, do you think it was really necessary to belittle someone that took the time, out of what I would guess to be a busy schedule, to give you an interview on their product? If you find it amusing to try to hurt someone’s feelings then I guess your little article was hilarious. -Wendy, via email Anthony Pignataro responds: Thank you very much for your letter. If you’ve read the paper before, then you’re well aware that I do pick on corporate hacks, public relations flacks, politicians and, in general, anyone in any kind of position of power who says or does something dumb. But apparently you didn’t read my writeup that closely—I never spoke with anyone at SPAM or its public relations offices. I was merely riffing off quotes that appeared in Brand Week magazine and the Rochester Post-Bulletin. But I assure you—had a PR person (who is paid very well to speak with reporters) told me those quotes, I would not have hesitated to make fun of them. Maui Time welcomes letters commenting

Whatever the product is, if we need to import it to Hawai‘i that is not really solving the problem of self-reliance. In these uncertain times I think we should focus our energy on what we can do to be sustainable like Pacific Biodiesel Hawai‘i—I totally support Kelly King and her company because it is locally run and fills a niche. One other important biofuel source that we could grow really well here in Hawai‘i is industrial hemp, we just need to change a few laws. Palm oil and cattle are just a few of the reasons land is being deforested, houses are another major contributor and we do need more affordable houses here in Hawai‘i, but with the rising cost of timber and oil per barrel, getting the wood for our houses is getting more and more unaffordable. That’s okay because there is an alternative solution and it is structurally certified bamboo that can be grown, harvested and ecologically processed right here in Hawai‘i, thus increasing our self-reliance. The noninvasive varieties of bamboo are really good for the environment and

would be a great way to support local people and industries from the plantation to the drafting table and construction workers, while keeping our lands in agriculture and restoring some of the damage done by unhealthy agricultural practices of the past. -Tamara Paltin, via Mauitime.com

What a treasure Maui has in Rob Parsons. His cover story on the folly, the irresponsibility and the dangers of HECO’s plan to use imported palm oil as part of the solution to our energy “crisis” points out how short sighted our electric utility is in developing real sustainable energy solutions (“Deadly Price,” Apr. 3, 2008). What are they thinking, drinking or smoking? Of course our state and county are also talking renewable energy but not really walking the talk. Rob is to be commended on a very thorough job of explaining the issues and I sincerely hope everyone at HECO and state and county government reads this article and reconsiders the implications of this idea. And what is with building biodiesel energy plants on Oahu and Maui, both able to handle more biomass than we could ever produce on the islands? I thought the idea was to only import feedstock from Southeast Asia until we could grow our own (like that will ever happen). I’m just ashamed at the mentality that will drag this state down if rapid and significant changes aren’t made to the process that would allow this plan to move forward. -Maury King, Kihei

ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

The Frights of Spring

Red Flags

Signs that not everything is blossoming like daffodils Spring—yes, the perfect time of year for Earth Day. But what’s this I read about Mainland truckers protesting the high cost of diesel at more than $4 per gallon? Why, even Maui’s homegrown company Pacific Biodiesel can do better than that, with their price holding steady at $3.49 per gallon. But veteran truckers warn that if something isn’t done about rising fuel prices, the cost of many consumer goods will quickly follow. Last week congressional representatives grilled oil company executives, whose industry had $123 billion in earnings last year. They asked why petroleum companies should continue to receive billions in tax breaks while consumers pay soaring pump costs. An official from Exxon Mobil Corporation, which made a record $40 billion last year, said they are in an “up cycle” and we must look at their investments and earnings over the long term. A congressman responded by saying that the up cycle has been going on too long, and that anger levels are rising while approval ratings are plummeting. Democratic lawmakers hammered the oil companies for more of their profits, and called them to do more to develop alternative energy sources. Republicans countered by asking to open new areas for drilling to boost oil and natural gas production. Certainly, rising fuel charges are one of the major factors in the recent closure of Aloha Airlines, ATA, and Skybus, as well as the departure of two of Norwegian Cruise Lines’ three inter-island ships. Hawai‘i’s economy, top-heavy with tourist dollars, will take a hit. And it hasn’t helped that the current mayoral administration sought to enforce a large segment of the island economy—visitors wishing to stay in home rentals rather than resorts— out of existence.

message to heart and asked for that money to go instead to Maui’s fragile environment—to conservation organizations that depend on grants, donations and volunteer efforts? What if $4 million went straight to sustainability planning for the possible lean times ahead? Wouldn’t the word of mouth still reach Maui’s visitors and give them even more reason to return—to visit a place that really cares about its most valuable natural resources and is preserving them for future generations? Preservation seems to be the theme with our neighbors on Molokai, who don’t want to see La‘au Point converted into 200 luxury lots for the ultra-rich while straining the island’s water resources and values. Fortunately, their values include a deep sense of community self-determination, for the road ahead will surely be rocky for 120 workers laid off by the Molokai Ranch’s parent company, GuocoLeisure Ltd. of Singapore. When you add the 1,900 workers laid off by Aloha Airlines, you suddenly have the largest surge in unemployment Hawai‘i has seen in recent history. If fuel costs and a sagging Mainland economy translate into less tourist arrivals, what options do we have locally to improve the outlook? Can we, perhaps, build our way out of an economic recession? The majority of our County Council

“How did we ever get this discombobulated? More importantly, how can we get back on track?”

It’s spring! Lo, the warming, brightening hopefulness that abounds, as the world awakes from its winter slumbers. Upcountry jacaranda trees begin to blush with their lavender blossoms. Haiku gardenias explode like popcorn on rain-kissed bushes. On the Mainland, record snowfalls in the Midwest—over 100 inches in my home state of Wisconsin—are finally melting. Baseball season has begun, and thousands of fans will flock to the ballpark, paying a king’s ransom for tickets to watch multi-millionaire athletes play a kid’s game. Still, as surely as ivy grows on the outfield walls of Wrigley Field, there’s a feeling that all’s right with the world. Or is it? Global climate change, still doubted by some, isn’t merely stirring up Category 5 hurricanes and dropping historic amounts of rain and snow. It’s also busy at work unhinging a portion of the Antarctic ice shelf the size of Connecticut. We can only hope the ice chunk might obstruct the Japanese whaling fleet from killing more than a thousand whales again this year, under the guise of scientific research. Earth Day is also right around the corner, and there’s hope that folks might sign petitions against global warming, whaling, U.S. Navy sonar or even just install a few compact fluorescent light bulbs in their homes.

till, Spring Break brought the usual large number of visitors to our island, and if they weren’t too upset with all the new construction and traffic, they might even return. But just to be sure, Mayor Charmaine Tavares is asking the County Council to support another spring tradition: approving nearly $4 million for the Maui County Visitors Bureau in the annual budget review. Now, what if we took the Earth Day

The morning of Thursday, April 3, 2008 saw Kahului Ale House back at the LC Board of Adjudication, up on one count of over-service—serving a customer who was already intoxicated. Owner Scott Metcalfe appeared and pled no contest. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Evans Smith gave a “summary” of the case, which dated back to April 2007. Unlike other prosecutors, Smith defined “summary” as reading virtually all the LC reports on the incident, taking the time include report numbers, details on who took photocopies where and even a list of every Ale House employee on duty that night, including people who worked in the kitchen and had no connection to the case whatsoever. But Smith also managed to mention (at least five times, by my count) that customer Brandon Allen Starr consumed at least three “double Jack and Cokes” and “potentially” three Jaeger Bombs, before becoming so loud that Ale House employees cut him off and asked him to leave. That last point—which Smith called a “red flag” that indicated Ale House had clearly violated state and county liquor laws—clearly bothered board member Joe Tanaka, who said Ale House personnel had “done the right thing” by ejecting Starr. Then it came time for Metcalfe to plead his case. Saying that he “was in the business of selling drinks,” he then launched into a rambling story about how a single beer once made him intoxicated. Metcalfe said it’s hard to deal with the island’s “tough labor market,” donated “$100 out of my own pocket” to a former employee who lost her house in recent storms, is a member of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, has in the past helped people by taking them “canoeing” and is “getting over” owning the place. The board ended up fining Metcalf $2,000, but suspended half that amount. The whole issue of what an establishment is supposed to do with a customer it discovers is drunk remains ambiguous and unresolved.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD FORGET MARCH MADNESS Another group of collegians works out amidst coaches’ whistles, endures bloody, 12-hour practices and cheers on teammates preparing for the national championship in meat-judging, in which about 40 colleges compete, according to a March Wall Street Journal report. Coaches at powerhouses like Colorado State and South Dakota State say skills such as evaluating Tbone cutting and spotting whether a pig has too much back fat come with determination and concentration (and, of course, practice, as one coach said it all comes down to time spent in the meat locker). Pro scouts—representatives of U.S. meat companies—even watch from the stands, seeking talent.

ITALIAN LAW ROCKS! Italy’s highest appeals court ruled in March that it’s legal for a woman to lie in a police investigation if the reason is to cover up her adulterous affair. Court of Cassation judges said that her honor is more important than providing intimate information about her lover.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT When Johnny Diablo’s year-old vegan restaurant failed to catch on in Portland, Ore., last year, he converted the space into Casa Diablo’s Gentlemen’s Club, which is what he believes is the world’s only vegan strip club. He has no rule against meat-eating dancers, he told Willamette Week in February, but won’t permit leather, fur, silk or wool outfits on stage (no “murder victims” in the club, is how he put it).

University of Calgary and the Tokyo Institute of Technology proudly announced in February that they had successfully stored “nothing” inside a puff of gas and then had managed to retrieve that same “nothing.” That “nothing” is called a “squeezed vacuum” and the physicists tell us that a light wave can be manipulated so that its phases are of uncertain amplitude, then the light itself removed so that only the “uncertainty” property of the wave remains.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS To feed the fast-growing women’s hairextension business, brokers in India scour the countryside for Hindu temples that encourage female worshippers to shear themselves as good-luck offerings to the temples’ gods, according to a February dispatch in Germany’s Der Spiegel. Historically, the hair was used to make mattresses, but because the celebrity-driven extension business is so large, salons around the world pay $125 to $250 per pound for strands of never-chemicallytreated hair of desirable hues. Shaving is a Hindu tradition, and one donor told Spiegel she had long prayed for her husband to stop drinking and that when that “miracle” happened, she felt compelled to offer her hair.

REAL BAD TIMES In the worst slums of Port-au-Prince, Haiti (where 80 percent of the people live on less than $2 a day), rice sells for 30 cents a cup (double the price of a year ago), according to a January Associated Press dispatch. This leaves the poorest of the poor to subsist almost entirely on “cookies” made from dirt. Choice clay from the central plateau is at least a source of calcium and can be baked with salt and vegetable shortening. Unfortunately, the AP reporter noted, the price of dirt has so far risen about 40 percent in the La Saline slum. MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

Aloha lost every year; 10,000 stranded passengers in Hawai‘i alone; a potential loss of half a million tourists every year; a $100 increase in ticket costs on average. Oh, and Aloha CEO David Banmiller is going around saying there’s going to me disruption in the airlines. “We just happen to be at the beginning,” Banmiller said at bankruptcy court a few days ago, according to the Honolulu Advertiser. “You haven’t seen the end yet.” You mean it’s going to get worse? Oh, joy.

FRIDAY, Apr. 4

WEDNESDAY, Apr. 2 Now I like Joe Bertram III. He’s the state Representative for the 11th District, which encompasses South Maui. Bertram’s fair and knows firsthand (from the years he spent both as a Maui Planning Commissioner and as a County Council gadfly) what issues are really important to residents. That being said, he really needs to be careful what he stuffs in those little taxpayer-funded envelopes he—and the rest of our esteemed lawmakers—enjoy sending to us constituents. “At present I am working to pass resolutions that will protect our elementary school children from cancer causing ultraviolet light, tax brakes [sic] for households that invest in alternative energy sources, as well as a bill that will set out ‘smart growth’ guideline[s], that will include walkways and bikeways in all future developments,” Bertram recently wrote his constituents in a letter simply dated April 2008. That sentence, a mish-mash of spelling errors and sloppy phrasing (is Bertram pushing for a bill that would protect children from lower taxes?) is a dangerous signal to send to voters— especially in an election year.

THURSDAY, Apr. 3 Oh, look, more good airline news: ATA just went out of business. Absolutely wonderful—less capacity and higher fares always mean good things for the consumer, right? Seriously, I’m starting to hear scary numbers: one million airliner seats worth of capacity for both ATA and

Oh yeah, it had to happen: Hawai`i Superferry officials just announced that they’re coming to rescue us! Apparently, the grievous rudder problems and drydock damage have all been made good— ahead of schedule!—and everything already checks out so the company’s going to send the Alakai back to Maui this coming Monday. Of course, HSF officers say it’s just a coincidence that the Superferry is coming back at a time when inter-island air travel seems to be collapsing. “We’ve been working to get the ship into service as soon as we could,” company business development director Terry O’Halloran told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. “That’s always been our goal, and it’s really unfortunate for Hawaii to see a company like Aloha Airlines [fail].” Yes, yes—it was the plan all along to announce that the Alakai wouldn’t be ready until April 22, then suddenly restart passenger service on April 7. Though there is one small wrinkle in that story: today’s Maui News reports that—in contrast to O’Halloran’s insistence that the Superferry is right on schedule—HSF President and CEO John Garibaldi “told The Maui News that the ferry had left dry dock but that there were no intentions to put it into service immediately.”

SATURDAY, Apr. 5 I’d say this was odd, but where the Superferry is concerned, it would be odd if the statements of company officials actually conformed to physical reality.

Tavares likes Wailea 670!

appears that the fight will only get nastier.

MONDAY, Apr. 7 So I guess everyone around here is cool with the Superferry. I say this because the Alakai came back to Kahului Harbor this morning and no one was there—no protesting surfers in the water, no marchers on the beach, no sign-wavers on the road over by the Superferry entrance. Then again, maybe we’re worried about nothing: apparently, less than 50 people actually sailed today on the nearly 900-capacity Alakai.

TUESDAY, Apr. 8 SUNDAY, Apr. 6 The Maui News paints a grim picture of Molokai today. And why not? Nearly two percent of the entire island population lost their jobs the moment Molokai Ranch announced that they were playing hardball and pulling out of the island— with the noted exception of the plans to build luxurious homes at La`au Point. Company officials refused to talk with the News, which also isn’t very surprising. Their actions practically yell out that they don’t care what happens to the residents of Molokai or how the rest of us view them or their actions. They want La‘au Point developed, and they will do everything they can to force the issue. Given that there are still plenty of anti-La‘au Point development signs across the island, it

The lawsuit filed by five local residents against the County of Maui, alleging that the County Council Land Use Committee improperly recessed their hearings on the Wailea 670 project and failed to allow public testimony on new information that was periodically offered, hit a snag this morning. The county asked Judge Joseph Cardoza for another 18 days to read a hundred or so pages of affidavits and exhibits that plaintiffs’ attorney Lance Collins sent Monday morning. Collins objected to such a long delay, suggesting two to three days, so Cardoza split the difference. After the hearing, Collins was still optimistic, even going so far as to say that his case was completely independent of Mayor Charmaine Tavares’ imminent vote on the whole project. Which, even though it

was due yesterday, wasn’t actually made public around 8 p.m. this evening. “After much deliberation and consideration,” Tavares wrote in a letter to the Maui County Council members, “I have decided to sign the bills related to the Wailea 670 project (Honuaula) that the County Council supported and forwarded to my office for review and action.” Tavares’ reasons were simple: 700 affordable units (250 of which are in North Kihei) and the fact that “these lands were designated as urban in 1994 for future residential and recreational development”–exactly the case project lobbyist Charlie Jencks has been making. Then she added this little wrinkle: “The Department of Water Supply has indicated that the County of Maui does not at this time have sufficient water to support the development of these [North Kihei] units,” the mayor wrote. “The development must therefore find its own source or wait until the County has developed sufficient water before going forward with this component of the development.” In any case, the next hearing on the open meetings suit is on Monday, April 14, at 8 a.m. in Judge Cardoza’s 4th floor courtroom. Given these developments, it should be fun. Get snarky news and commentary from Anthony Pignataro sent directly to you cell phone. Just text “follow apignataro” to 40404 and we’ll do the rest. MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com You think you are the first haole punks ever slapped down on our shores by some drug-addled, beach-living drunk mother? I’m tired of you and your tedious little gang of Hobbits running up and down Front Street, angrily cursing and generally hating life. Now I know that you’ve pussed out on many occasions when a normal-sized person who isn’t inebriated calls you out, but the other day I heard you were pushing around a helpless drunk. What is this, Clockwork Orange? How about watching that flick all the way to the end—I think you’ll be surprised. And how can you be so angry living here in paradise? It doesn’t even rain on your leaky van. Is your life that bad?

NO POWER You read that right, folks: MECO is now officially worse than Hawaiian Telcom. Is it really that surprising? All of Upcountry, Central and South Maui were blacked out on April 2 for reasons even our island’s supposedly all-powerful utility couldn’t explain. Apparently, MECO’s Kihei substation failed because of a “flashover,” whatever the hell that is, which then caused the Kahului plant to fail. It’s not like there was a hurricane or tsunami or even a mere Kona storm, so what was the reason this time? Saltwater corrosion? High winds? Bird strikes? For the amount of money we MECO customers pay each and every month, we should at least get a good reason for our blackouts.

STOCKS And Maui Land & Pine goes up a notch on news that their stock is now being publicly traded on the mighty New York Stock Exchange (the National League of stocks) as opposed to the American Stock Exchange (the Pacific Coast League of stocks). And on April 2, the first day of trading, MLP stock rose to $33.40 a share, which is good, though not nearly as good as the $37 a share price the company was getting last July. MTW

ROBREPORT SPRING: continued from page 6 seems to think so. How else do you explain their approval of Wailea 670 (or as the developers like to call it, “Honua‘ula”)? I know, they told us it was about affordable housing, not the 700 luxury homes and private golf course, while potentially bulldozing botanical and cultural treasures. Construction and real estate have long been the second tier on our economic pyramid, having surpassed agriculture decades ago. But it begs the question, “How many more housing units does Maui really need, and for whom?” The County Long Range Planning Division wrestled with this inquiry, and last week finally rolled out its

maps for the General Plan Advisory Committee. Upwards of 40,000 new housing units is what they projected will be needed by the year 2030. The Planning Department also wants to limit the demand for non-resident housing by 25 percent through a combination of policy, taxation and locating the units. But Planning Director Jeff Hunt noted, “To be honest, we’re not absolutely confident” that the policies would work. With all the talk of impending changes due to Peak Oil, climate change, environmental degradation and overpopulation, why is future planning so obsessed with the number of housing units needed? Isn’t there a greater need to plan for a sustainable community, one capable of self-sufficiency to feed and cloth itself, provide adequate fresh water, produce local

renewable electricity and building materials and rejuvenate our economy along with our natural resources? Shouldn’t discussions of this ilk supersede those to boost numbers of approved construction projects and provide tax rebates as an economic stimulus? It was noteworthy to see that poll respondents largely said they planned to use a federal tax rebate of $600 to $1,200 to pay bills. Still, apparently many feel it’s their Godgiven right to continue blithely down a consumer-happy, air-conditioned path of shopping, buying, driving and propagating, with expectations that all they want and need will magically continue to appear on the shelves at their local Big Box store. We know they’re buying stuff, lots of stuff, since the County Solid Waste Division Chief is asking for $12 million in next year’s

budget for a new Phase V of the landfill to bury the junk we’re throwing away. e occasionally get glimpses of the impending darkness, such as the day last week when Maui Electric’s (MECO) grid came to a screeching halt, plunging most of the island into an afternoon blackout. Apart from some kamikaze driving through traffic signal-less intersections and general inconveniences such as melting gelato, there were no major problems. But MECO couldn’t even pinpoint the cause of the outage, stating only that it originated from a “flashover” at a Kihei substation. The shadows have crept across lending institutions on the Mainland, including the recent collapse of investment bank Bear Stearns, the same folks who introduced the investors for BlueEarth Biodiesel to Hawaiian Electric Company. The country’s fifth-largest investment bank had to agree to sell shares for $2 each, sending shockwaves throughout Wall Street. If the U.S. economy were a car, wrote USA Today, all its dashboard warning lights would be flashing red. Still, there are signs of optimism, aren’t there? How about this: 40 years after the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., there is hope that a man of mixed racial background may be elected to lead our country. We can hope that the political process won’t be hijacked as it was with election-machine tampering and a Supreme Court ruling to appoint George W. Bush over Al Gore, who had won the popular vote. But can superdelegates overturn a popular vote for Barrack Obama and nominate Hillary Clinton instead, assuring an extension to the 20year family affair of Bushes and Clintons in Washington D.C.? How did we ever get this discombobulated? More importantly, how can we get back on track? It may take things getting really bad before we are individually motivated to take action. Sometimes, carrying the torch of hopefulness may seem like holding a single candle in the darkest of nights. A few days ago in Paris protesters extinguished the Olympic torch, once a symbol of reconciliation and friendly competition between nations. Carrying Tibetan flags, these activists sought to illuminate the ongoing oppression by the Chinese people over that Himalayan nation steeped in spirituality, even though their religious leader has been in exile for decades. What candle, flame or noble cause will each of us carry in the days, weeks, months and years ahead? How can we cultivate inner peace to allow us to survive the turmoil that surrounds us? How may we remain inspired to “spring” into action and let our dreams blossom? Isn’t it time to wake up and smell the gardenias? MTW

very weekday, Fred Guzman and Bill Schindler squeeze themselves into a tiny room—a converted hallway, really—and spend three hours talking to each about sports. Their show, called The SportsPhone and broadcast on ESPN 550—one of the six Maui stations owned by the Pacific Radio Group (PRG). Though ESPN 550 runs sports talk shows 24 hours a day, The SportsPhone is different. Broadcast from the PRG offices in Kahului (just around the corner from the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center), The SportsPhone offers locals a chance to ask questions, rant about the latest outrage or just listen to those who do. Guzman and Schindler teamed up in January 2007. Schindler was new to Maui radio, though Guzman has hosted The SportsPhone since 2000 or so. Ratings data are closely held by radio people, but Guzman and Schindler say their show is very popular, though almost exclusively with males. Unlike sports talk hosts like the iconoclastic Jim Rome or the sleep-inducing Dan Patrick, Guzman and Schindler somehow strike a balance between the technical and the outlandish. Humor, more so even than the almanac knowledge of all things sports that both men share, propels the show forward. “The reason this works is that we’re incredibly different people in everything we do,” Guzman told me. “I’m kind of short, he’s tall. I’m an older guy who thinks he’s young, he’s a young guy who acts 80.”

E

uzman is right—the two hosts couldn’t be more different. Schindler is originally from Maryland, but graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu, where he studied broadcast news and called nearly 300 games for the school. Later he worked for the Alaska Baseball League. A big guy (one of the running jokes on The SportsPhone is that Schindler enjoys food a bit more than most people), Schindler has a friendly, expansive smile and tendency to gesticulate during

shows far more than his partner. Guzman, on the other hand, has been a voice on Maui radio for the last 16 years. Born in Puerto Rico, Guzman spent two decades as a sportswriter and editor. For the venerable San Jose Mercury News, Guzman covered the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Golden State Warriors, Stanford Cardinals, Super Bowls, NBA Finals, Olympics and other big time sports events. He also spent two years as editor of the Morgan Hill Times, a tiny Bay Area paper. During that time, Guzman remade the “fixer-upper” paper into an awardwinning publication. Today Guzman is well known on the island, both as a sports talk show host (and as the “Sports Guru,” who chats every morning with Alakai Paleka on her KPOA-FM show) and as a longtime observer of local politics and current affairs. For 10 months, he hosted The Talk of Maui, a Fox News 900 morning show that delved into local issues (disclosure: Guzman had me on as a weekly phone-in guest). That program ended a few months ago to make

room for a new statewide, two and a half hour Office of Hawaiian Affairs program that Guzman said will begin April 14. Both men seriously prepare for each day’s show, coming to the studio with stacks of stories and notes, though any pre-show work requires surprising delicacy. Organize your thinking too much and the show will sound stilted; too little, and the program will be loose and dull. For a talk show to work, regardless of subject matter, it must appear to be organic—a series of live conversations which listeners can join at virtually any moment. For this story, on April 4 I sat in the PRG studio during the broadcast of The SportsPhone. Guzman and Schindler riffed off my presence in a good-natured way, but during regular shows claustrophobia must surely set in. In his astonishingly detailed April 2005 Atlantic story “Host,” David Foster Wallace described the experience of hosting a talk radio show. “Try sitting alone in a room with a clock, turning on a tape recorder, and starting to speak into it,” he wrote. “Speak about anything you want—with the proviso that your topic, and your opinions on it, must be of interest to some group of strangers who you imagine will be listening to the tape.” Wallace added that such a speaker’s words “should be intelligent and their reasoning sequential”; statements made “should be not just comprehensible and interesting but compelling, stimulating, which means that your remarks have to provoke and sustain some kind of emotional reaction in the listeners.” This naturally requires the speaker to “construct some kind of identifiable persona,” but any remarks “cannot have any of the fragmentary, repetitive, garbled quantities of real interhuman speech, or speech’s ticcy unconscious ‘umm’s or ‘you know’s, or false starts or stutters or long pauses while you try to think of how to phrase what you want to say next.” It helps that Guzman and Schindler work as a team, playing off each other’s remarks with something between playful banter and outright disagree-

y April 4 visit to the station occurred on a day celebrating two solemn events. First, it was the day before the NCAA Final Four men’s basketball games, on which commentary dominated The SportsPhone’s first hour. But the day I visited his show was also what Guzman calls “Old School Friday.” Every Friday, he plays a few funk songs, just to mix things up, usually on the order of one per hour. “I started playing just bits of funk songs,” Guzman told me while Kool & the Gang played over the airways during the show’s first hour. “Then I got calls saying play the whole song. So I did.” Sometimes, Guzman added, people will complain today, but then fans will call in and gang up on the complainer. The SportsPhone is eclectic, to say the least. Even someone not sufficiently versed in the infield fly rule or NCAA bracketology should find something of interest in the show. For the last few months, I took notes while listening to various shows. Here’s what I heard:

M

JAN. 30 Schindler jokes about “harpooning the silver Mercedes” that constantly bedevils him on the roadway.

FEB. 01 Schindler and Guzman go off on U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R, Pennsylvania) for equating the recent revelation that NFL officials had allegedly destroyed of videotapes in the New England Patriots spy case with the Central Intelligence Agency’s admission that it had destroyed terrorist interrogation tapes.

FEB. 27 Guzman delves into fan psychology, observing that the emotional low a fan experiences over a loss by their favorite team is more intense than the thrill the fan feels when that team wins.

MAR. 07 Guzman and Schindler discuss their reasons why Brooklyn Dodgers great Jackie Robinson should not be in the college basketball hall of fame.

MAR. 13

After discussing how Houston Rockets won their 20th straight game, Guzman goes nuts over Schindler’s saying that he hates bowties but loves bolo ties.

APRIL 01 They discuss the Tampa Bay Devil Rays changing their name to the Tampa Bay Rays. Schindler says its in reference to the sun’s “rays,” but observes that there’s still a devil ray patch on the players’ sleeves. Later Schindler uses the phrase “caboodles of money” when explaining why he thinks Major League Baseball “makes absolutely no sense.” The Marlins, he says, put on lousy baseball, but actually make a lot of money. Later still, Guzman reads a sports report saying Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neill enjoyed calling former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy “Ron Jeremy,” saying he looked like the infamous porn star from the neck up. Guzman says he’s not familiar with Jeremy, but always thought Van Gundy more closely resembled Tony Orlando. On April 4, Guzman and Schindler talked college bas-

ketball, NASCAR, a story about a hawk that attacked a 13year-old girl named Alexa Rodriguez at Fenway Park, rumors that recently retired NFL great Brett Favre is “shopping himself out” to other teams, gossip involving Matt Leinart photographed drinking out of a beer bong, former University of Hawai‘i star Colt Brennan’s recent hip surgery, NBA star Kenyon Martin’s trouble with flagrant fouls, the fact that an average of just one pitcher per team staff threw at least 200 innings last season and an apparent rise in team mascot-on-athlete violence. At one point during my studio visit, I asked Schindler if there are ever any times when he and Guzman have trouble filling the show. “Mid-February,” he said. “June, too. But this time [of the year] is good, and fall is good, too.” he show, it seems, practically relies on regular callers. Guzman and Schindler, though practiced at the art of talking and talking about sports, clearly enjoy having fan participation. “We’ve always encouraged the callers,” Guzman said. “But very seldom do people call to talk about local sports. This is a small island—people love it when you talk about it, but they won’t engage in it.” Not many weeks into 2008, Schindler got to talking about how much he loves the Buffalo wings from his hometown. Soon, a regular listener called in saying he knew a guy in Buffalo who could beat his wings hands down. Soon other food items became involved, including some kind of hot wing sausage. Guzman told me the competition will happen, though—they’re aiming for sometime in May. This isn’t surprising. We seem to live in a time that cries out for sports commentary from the “man on the street.” And specific knowledge of actual sports isn’t even required. Don’t have an opinion on the Final Four? How about recent controversy over allegedly illegal consultations involving NFL draft picks? Has your baseball team already been eliminated from post-season contention? (Schindler, a Baltimore Orioles fan, knows something of this problem.) Then go off on the issue of steroids in the sport. Or rip the congressional hearings on steroids in the sport. Or take another tack and rip all the people and congressmen who are talking about steroids. The sheer array of subjects that callers wanted to discuss on April 4 made me dizzy. “Rudy” was the show’s first caller. “I’d like to beat the love out of Love,” he said, referring to UCLA basketball star Kevin Love (whose team ended up losing to Memphis 24 hours later. Then Rudy shifted gears, throwing his hate on the entire Atlantic Coast Conference. “Man, I hate the ACC,” he said. At one point caller “Ed” mentioned that he’d like to discuss a recent NASCAR scandal. “Does it have to do with sex tapes and Nazis?” Schindler asked. “Yeah!” Ed said, laughing. Another caller, “The Source,” later asked Guzman, a Warriors fan, if he’d be rooting for the LA Lakers in their upcoming game against the Dallas Mavericks. “Yes,” Guzman said, “but just getting the words out is difficult.” Near the end of the show, two regular callers—Rudy and “Long Suffering,” began going back and forth over a wrist injury that sidelined that latter. After the show, I asked Guzman and Schindler if they thought radio’s days were numbered, given the stunning speed with which mp3 players and Internet music have proliferated throughout society. “No,” Guzman said without hesitation. “People need company.” “Especially talk,” Schindler said. “People may listen to music on their iPods, but they need the talk.”

ment, but they also have to do so in a room that literally used to be a hallway and has no real air circulation (after no time at all, it gets really stuffy and hot in there) while surrounded by a few computer screens, microphones, a mixing board, sports schedules, a poster advertising last season’s University of Hawai‘i football team, some acoustic foam and walls that seem much too close for comfort.

The Sportsphone airs weekdays 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on ESPN 550. Listeners can call in by dialing 856-2836. MTW

Perfect Little Oasis Coconut Grill is vintage, old-style Hawai‘i If you don’t usually hear the words “fine dining” and “across from a gas station” in the same sentence, it’s probably because you haven’t been to the Coconut Grill in the Maui Seaside Hotel in Kahului. It’s a peaceful little oasis; old Hawai‘i wrapped in greenery. For me the decor can be summed up in one word: chairs. Not just your ordinary run-of-the-mill park-yourokole pieces of furniture—these are bamboo and what looks like twisted rope. Trust me, they’re actually much nicer than I’ve described. When I could tear my eyes away from the seating I noticed glass floats used as lights—very cool—canoe paddles, woven bamboo on the walls and ceramic fish. The overall effect is vintage, old-style Hawai‘i.

I’d also say elegant but owners Mark and Candy Mattos insist it’s a casual family-style restaurant. But they didn’t fool me. The food absolutely gave them away. For starters there were the rolls—homemade, garlicy and buttery, one of my favorite combinations and a definite appetite buster. We controlled ourselves, though, and were glad we did. Especially when we tasted the coconut shrimp tiki appetizer, tempura beer battered, rolled in coconut and macadamia nuts and served with sweet chili pineapple dip. Butter was back with a vengeance in the Hualalai mushroom sauté with caramelized onions, a dish that absolutely demanded a mopping up of the crème sherry sauce with the garlic rolls. Now we certainly weren’t sorry with our choice of appetizers but could just as easily have picked the paniolo pork ribs, sashimi and poke, escargot melt, etc. For an entrée I had the surf and turf with mahi mahi and New York steak, tomatoes, mushrooms and onions. This was threaded on sprigs of rosemary—

way more exciting than bamboo and definitely more fragrant. The result was inside and out rosemary mahi and steak topped with lobster sauce. My husband, ever the ahi man, ordered it seared with a macadamia and coconut beurre blanc. We eat a lot of ahi and prefer it raw—naked if you will—but this dish made him thankful it had gotten dressed. I can tell a good meal by how much he’s willing to share. Sadly, this was a one-bite situation. They offer somewhere around 15 surf and turf combinations, a luau plate, prime rib, scampi, chicken, lobster, scallops, crab cakes and more. And a grilled cheese sandwich my son described as “Out of this world!” Our dessert, called the Hawaiian Trio, should have a review of its own. It featured three scoops of ice cream, coconut, Kona coffee and macadamia nut, each rolled in a different coating: coconut and graham cracker, oreo and macadamia nuts (I think that’s right. At that point there was a feeding frenzy). These were fried tempura-style and garnished with chocolate fudge sauce, strawberry and pineapple puree. It’s been my experience that new restaurants usually have a period of glitches and oops, things that eventually get ironed out. I guess nobody told the folks at the Coconut Grill. They worked together like a well-oiled machine; which might have something to do with the fact that Mark and Candy already run a Coconut Grill in Hilo. I’m glad they chose Maui as their second location. After such a great dining experience I realize that Kahului is much more convenient than Hilo for dinner. MTW

Believe it or not, there is great chicken katsu curry on the Westside. I can’t think of a better “fill-me-up” meal after a day at the beach or playing tourist on Front Street. The local girls that work with my husband swear by the stuff. Now that I think about it, the hubby does have an extreme fondness for katsu curry and you know what they say about the way to a man’s heart... 840 Waine‘e St. Lahaina, 667-5142. Open M-Sa 11 a.m.-2 p.m., 5-8:30 p.m. $

BANGKOK CUISINE My personal favorite place to get curry is Bangkok. They used to be located in Paia where Jacques is today but are now near Kinko’s and Pinata’s in Kahului. Their panang curry is to die for. I like it best served hot (which is blazing on the tongue) with chicken. The masman curry is also good, though when ordering the masman I usually switch it to medium with beef. The service is wonderful and it’s been fun watching this family-run business grow over the years. 395 Dairy Rd., Kahului, 893-0026. Open MSa 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Nightly 5 p.m.-9:30 p.m. $

KO KO ICHIBAN YA For those looking for a more Japanese curry, try Ko Ko Ichiban. This place is popular at lunch and they have great curry with a totally different flavor than the usual Thai places. It’s also conveniently located, which makes it a great stop-andgo place to pick up lunch before heading back to the office. 360 Papa Pl., Kahului, 871-9108 Open M-F 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. $

LYNNE’S CAFE Sure, Asian curry is great, but sometimes the stomach calls for a big plate of local-style curry—lots of meat and spices piled on steaming rice. You can even add a packet a mayo to the mix and really go for broke. That’s a good description for the curry at Lynne’s Cafe—Broke da mouth good. 810 Kokomo Rd., Haiku, 5759363. [MUSIC] Matt Costa was a professional skateboarder until a broken leg and 18 months of recovery ended his brief-but-gifted career. He spent all that free time dedicating himself to his acoustic guitar and writing songs. Today he’s the kinda-sorta celebrity from Huntington Beach who caught Jack Johnson’s attention and got signed to his Brushfire record label. He got to tour around with Jack (lucky!) in 2005 and he’s also played with Donavon Frankenreiter, G. Love and super talented No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont. His newest album, Unfamiliar Faces, has a bunch of fun, polished alternative pop songs with catchy, straightforward lyrics that get totally stuck in my head, but in a good way. There will even be a car show going on in the hopes of enticing dads to come down, too. This is also your chance to donate non-perishables to the Food Bank of Maui. Those that give will get a free bag of French fries. This is an annual event of The Kiwanis Club of the Valley Isle in partnership with the Hawai`i Association for the Education of Young Children (HAEYC), Maui Chapter, 4-H Clubs of Maui and Neighborhood Place of Wailuku. [STAGE] It’s more than a little ironic that the first stages of Project Ka`iulani, the Island Rose, are coinciding with the filming of a motion picture on the same topic that’s currently drawing substantial protests. But unlike its big budget and over dramatized look-alike, this organic production— written and extensively researched by Maui residents C. HarvieYamaguchi and J.J. Fahrni— focuses on the historical details and people surrounding the short life of Princess Victoria Ka`iulani Cleghorn, heir to the Hawaiian throne at the time of annexation. Now that was a wahine with seriously large kahones! Ka`iulani was well-educated, passionate about the Hawaiian people and culture and she stood up for her country in its time of need. This public performance reading will ultimately lead to a large musical stage production. Admission is free, donations accepted. 244-8760. [JA]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Freedom Fried David Ayer does bad cops Based on James Ellroy’s novel, Street Kings is set in LA’s bloodsoaked streets, traversed by widowed LAPD veteran Detective Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) whose carte blanche methods of obliterating suspects with his service revolver are threatened when his former partner Terrence Washington turns Internal Affairs informant. Accustomed to having his violent “missions” smoothed over with the help of Captain Wander (Forest Whitaker), Tom thumbs his nose at the inclosing IA officers, in order to find the gunmen responsible for shooting Washington down during a convenience store heist. A combination of implausible plot-points, and the miscasting of television’s Hugh Laurie as Internal Affairs chief Captain Biggs, hampers a convoluted crime thriller that is nonetheless entertaining for its grotesque action sequences. Writer/director David Ayer made a splash with his Bad Lieutenantinspired script for Training Day. It was a thoroughly modern version of a cor-

rupt police mentality that Americans continue to see reflected in the newspapers. Unarmed suspects get shot with 50 bullets, and cops go free after lip service trials allow communities to wring out their tears before moping away with little sense of justice being served. It’s this dire state of affairs that Ayer addresses with a comic perversion that views cops and criminals as not just the same brand of monster, but part of the same entity.

Street Kings

From the looks of Tom Ludlow’s squalid apartment, you’d never guess that he was once married. He’s a career cop concerned with keeping his gun clean for its perpetual use. And if Tom’s familiarity with racist viewpoints allows him to verbally belittle every Tyrone, Ernesto, Nam and Ethan he comes into contact with, so much the better. Whether or not he’s really a racist at heart is beside the point. Like Denzel Washington’s character in Training Day, Keanu Reeves’ Tom Ludlow exists to execute bad guys who, like him, frequently wear body armor and are armed to the teeth. He doesn’t have any grand aspira-

There’s shock value in the ripe dialogue between Tom and the three Korean crooks attempting to purchase a machine gun from him in a parking lot deal that leaves Tom bloodied on the ground-his car and gun taken in exchange for his salty prattle. But Tom’s bruises are a small price to pay for him to follow the suspects to their

fetish-fueled cathouse. What follows is a one-man guts-andglory mission that leaves brain matter splattered on walls and pints of oozing blood pooled on the floor. The subtext here is that you don’t have to look to Iraq to witness combat-style assaults. Street Kings gets a tonal shake-up from its mix of surprise casting for secondary characters. Talent typically thought of for their comedic skills hold their own, with the exception of Hugh Laurie, whose television persona follows him like a vile odor. Jay Mohr (Are We There Yet?), Terry Crews (Norbit) and Cedric “The Entertainer” all give credible dramatic performances in plot-mapping roles that help mask the film’s glaring disregard for realism. However, if Street Kings seems overtly alienated from reality, it serves to make a backhanded point about the surreal nature of police-committed massacres like New York’s Amadou Diallo case, and the recent murder of Sean Bell. That’s not to say that the film is pro or con on either side of the men in blue, merely that we are living in a time of heightened violence that taunts all logic. The film’s chain of brutal climax sequences blurs so many lines that you come away from it believing that anarchy in the streets is just a dirty little byproduct of democracy. Nobody eats “freedom fries” anymore. MTW

The glass blowing at Da Factory is far more than meets the eye Walking into Da Factory in the Pauwela Cannery is a lot like I imagine a desert at midday feels like, but a lot more industrial. Because of the humungous 600-pound pot furnace and four “glory-holes” in various sizes, the large 1,400 square foot studio is hot. But it’s a dry heat. By way of introduction, co-owner Bobby Smith opened the huge furnace’s door while I was standing nearby. The heat and roar were intense, almost frightening. Glass blowing, which dates back 3,500 some-odd years, is not for sissies. Originally from the mainland, Smith and his business partner Jason Harris officially opened Da Factory in May 2007. Both have impressive resumes in the art world. Harris is a celebrated artist and teacher, with experience as an assistant producer on the television show Hot Shop–a reality show that unites modern artists with master glass workers to collaborate on a masterpiece. He was also heavily involved in the designing aspect of creating rapper 50 Cent’s cognac bottle. Aside from his art, Smith has an impressive background in creative event planning, putting on parties in places like New York City, San Francisco, Miami, Amsterdam, Prague, Madrid, Istanbul and Florence. “Da Factory is set up to do large scale pieces,” Smith said. “There are other studios out there doing smaller pieces and we don’t want to cross streams with them, but instead find our own niche.” Next door to the actual work studio is a gallery and side-room containing shelving stacked high with various works of colorful art in glass like sculptures and vases. On display in the gallery until the end of April is the work of resident artist Charles Lowerie. I was first introduced to Lowerie’s work over the weekend when I attended a fashion show at the Pauwela Cannery, which–along with Da Factory–was sponsored by Wing’s Hawai‘i, Suits to Da Max and Chicks With Sticks. The catwalk was lined with large, gorgeous illuminated glass seashells. The effect was dazzling and suited the feel of the show

perfectly. His work is provocative and, for lack of a better word, trippy. Clear glass bubbles connect and dangle from the ceiling. One sphere encapsules a deep and blood red

heart, also made of glass. “The bubbles represent different spheres of consciousness,” Lowerie said. “Dreams, serenity, different perspectives and ways of seeing and being. The way they connect also represent family or the collective.” Da Factory is also something of a multimedia facility. “If someone comes to us and wants us to create something for them, we can film the process, the unveiling and when they take it home it becomes that much more special,” Smith told me. “Years from today, their great-grandchildren will have the footage that explains the meaning behind an heirloom left to them.” They also regularly film the process of glass blowing and posted videos on YouTube. Da Factory collaborates with other artists and venues to create one-of-a-kind events. Coming up they will coordinate and participate in First Saturday at the Pauwela Cannery in May that will focus on Hawaiian Art month and will include a luau, chant and a celebration of taro. Smith is excited about having the public come down, tour the studio and experience the art. “Our doors are open,” he said. “We’re here for the community and we want them to come down and check it out.” MTW

FIELD GUIDE TO LUCK

on Ka'anapali Beach --

By Alys R. Yablon [BOOK] My nose is big enough, but it would certainly grow to a ginormous size if I denied that I was superstitious. I always pick up pennies lying in the street, look for meaning in my day whenever a Pueo flys past my car, never walk under ladders, try not to cut my nails at night, avoid cracks in the sidewalk and firmly believe that economic security is directly related to the maneki neko or “lucky cat.” In fact, I’m so superstitious that I often worry about all the little misfortunes that may come my way by merely being ignorant of various charms, dates, sayings and symbols. Luckily for me, I found the Field Guide to Luck, which is both a fascinating and entertaining read. In this colorful little book, there are general descriptions, origins and variations of tons of luck-producing or draining things. It’s definitely a keeper and you better believe that I’ll have it handy during my next card game.

Witness the spectacle that is one of the West Side's longest running traditions - The 28th Annual Lahaina Canoe Club Restaurant & Resort Outrigger Canoe Races. It's water, sun and a ton of fun on the world famous Dig Me Beach Ka'anapali. Get your crews and get some!

By Marco Turco [DVD] If you’re looking for a flick to satisfy your Sopranos craving or know all the words from the Godfather trilogy, than Excellent Cadavers isn’t going to be your cup of tea. But if you’re looking for “A thorough, journalistic examination that is ultimately horrifying as it is informative” (Hollywood Reporter) on the realdeal Mafia, then look no further. This documentary takes place primarily in Sicily, which sets an almost perversely beautiful stage for acts of violence and greed. Not for the squeamish, but if you dig black and white shots of people with their brains leaking out of their noggins then you’re in luck.

SECRET LIVES OF GREAT AUTHORS: WHAT YOUR TEACHERS NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT FAMOUS NOVELISTS, POETS AND PLAYWRIGHTS By Robert Schnakenberg [BOOK] Consider this the equivalent of VH1’s “Behind the Music,” but for dead authors. Personally, it’s one of my new favorites and confidently predict that it will be a classic in the years to come. Seriously, who doesn’t want to get the dirt on the authors that practically created the “Required Reading” list that stole so many hours of precious summer vacation between Junior and Senior years? In this book I learned that Emily Dickenson was probably a psychic vampire as well as a closet lesbian and that Louisa May Alcott may have had a little bothersome opium addiction. Who knew? MTW

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Finally, the spotlight is on you! Don’t blink, or you might miss it, though. Also, don’t look or listen behind you, or you might notice the handful of asses in the wings booing and jeering and doing their very best to salt your game. This is your very brief but glorious moment to shine; are you going to let your naysayers ruin it for you? Use that famous singlemindedness of yours to enjoy it to the fullest and tune them out completely. You can worry about them later, when you’re not in the middle of something that could be potentially incredible. Right now, though, I’d enjoy that.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Usually you’re happy with things as they are, but occasionally you get hungry for just that little bit of excitement and adventure. Most of the time, you suppress this urge, for fear that your desires could ruin all the good stuff you have. This week, however, you should feel free to indulge, within reason. You’ve earned a lot of good credit; go spend some of it. Enjoy yourself, and come back happy. Those you love will be glad to see you go there, even if you do misbehave a little. The only caveat to all these naughty good times: whatever you do get up to, don’t lie about it later.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You can’t rely on technicalities to save your ass. Obeying the letter of the law but not its spirit is sneaky, and you know it. I don’t care if you helped write the law and included this loophole specifically— those whose trust you violate are going to call shenanigans, and they’re right. If you decide to go there anyway, don’t try to defend yourself with semantics. There are so many people ready to call you out on that bullshit, it’s not funny. Go on and do what you want, if it’s that important to you, but don’t think you can do it and not get caught—and probably (at least metaphorically) spanked.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Your incredibly astute perception is more weakness than strength, this week. Because you’re able to read between the lines of what’s before you, and assess how people really feel—as opposed to how they say they feel—you have access to extra information. You could use that information to empower yourself, but you’re most likely to use it to make yourself feel bad, hold yourself back, and generally sabotage the situation. Can you stop yourself from doing that, Cancer? If not, perhaps you could try another strategy: ignoring your gut. That goes against what you’re all about, I know—but if your intuition is only going to make you miserable right now, what good is it?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Some people are simply always going to bug you. Being who you are, they’re probably going to notice, eventually, that you’re not exactly beaming love and affection their way. What do you do when they approach you about it? Your natural inclination is to just tell the truth, but in this case, I’d say spare yourself the headache. Stirring up this shit isn’t likely to get them to change, and, to be fair, this is as much your baggage as anything to do with them. Tell them you’re moody and not to worry about it—and resolve to try to be nicer to them in the future, starting this week.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You’re good at letting the big stuff slide. You can make huge decision almost flippantly, because you’ve laid the foundation for them by attending to all the little details underneath. Unfortunately, it’s exactly those details that trip you up. Your focus on the nitty-gritty is frequently—and especially lately— a source of annoyance and frustration for you. I’m sure you often wish you could just ignore them the way other people seem to. However, I urge you to look at the flip side of that intense awareness—an appreciation for the details. There’s tremendous beauty to be found among them, beauty that most others simply aren’t privy to. Use that beauty to counterbalance the aggravation that comes with attending to those fundamentals that other people are able to (but shouldn’t) ignore.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You can be a little bit of an elitist. Although your standards don’t necessarily match those of others, or of society, you still place value on certain things and those who don’t seem to be up to snuff just don’t get the time of day from you. Fine. No one’s asking you to go out and make friends who don’t turn your crank. However, your snobbiness could have negative repercussions for you, this week, because some of those people you consider so far beneath you could actually contribute quite a lot to your life—if you’d bother to let them play even a minor role in it.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re generally reluctant to even try something new unless you know, ahead of time, that you’re likely to be quite good at it right off the bat. That’s understandable, but also a shame, because some of the things you could be genius at would require plenty of time, practice, and embarrassing failures to get to that point. I know you’re disinclined to endure the mildly humiliating learning process involved in beginning something completely new. Screw that. We all start somewhere. Considering the awesome place you could end up, I say get over yourself and give this a go, already.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) This situation has nothing to do with you, right? Well, I guess so. You could easily walk away from it, mind your own business and wait for it to blow over. But once again, you have the advantage of a unique, reasonably objective perspective. Paired with your charisma, that could enable you to mitigate the drama and spare a lot of hurt feelings all around. I can understand your reluctance to wade into a huge mess you didn’t help create, but do its origins really matter? What matters is that you have more power to make it go away faster than anyone else already involved. Won’t you exercise it?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You get what you want except when you’re not sure what you want. Then you flounder. This is totally unfamiliar territory, and terribly confusing to you. That’s why you need to turn to someone who’s used to navigating in this kind of fog. A Pisces, perhaps? This may feel strange, seeking advice from someone you usually think of as flaky and undirected, but it’s the smartest thing you can do right now. They won’t be able to tell you how to make the swift forward progress that you’re used to—that, after all, simply isn’t possible right now. But they will be able to tell you how to at least move forward, slowly—instead of backward or in circles.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You want to be generous to someone, but you’ve mostly been denied the avenue you would’ve preferred. Instead of giving up completely, you need to rethink your strategy. You’ll need to be a lot more creative about ways to exercise your generosity. You’ll also probably need to let go of any chance of getting “credit” for your gift. Be sneaky and make sure its origins are truly impossible to trace (a lame cover-up job will backfire on you), so that the recipient has no choice but to accept it. If it’s truly a gift, it shouldn’t matter that it’s come from you, should it?

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Sometimes your friends regard you as a sage, possessing abundant philosophical wisdom. Sometimes, though, some people regard you with something akin to scorn for the way you live your life. This week, especially, the dichotomy may prove especially frustrating What you need to keep in mind to get through the hypocrisy is that no one else is in a position to really understand what your life is like and how you see things. They can’t judge you, one way or the other, because they can’t be inside your head. That’s not to say no one can or should expect anything from you—however it’s your choice whether or not you can or should meet those expectations. Regardless, they can’t and should not judge you for it, either way.

RESTLESSNATIVE

BY STARR BEGLEY STARR@MAUITIME.COM

One in a million Driving home from town on Sunday evening, my husband and daughter had an interesting conversation about me. “Did you know that Mom’s the most beautiful woman in the whole world?” asked the Hubby. “No she’s not,” said my daughter from the back seat. “Why not?” he asked. “You do know there’s millions of people in the world, right?” “Yeah… well, who’s prettier than Mom?” “I don’t know. Maybe we should check the Internet.” At six, my daughter isn’t just aware that the world is filled with a ton of people, she knows that it means that no matter who you are and what you do, chances are that there is someone out there who is undoubtedly better than you. It could be that I was just overprotected as a kid, but I don’t remember growing up with that burden. When I was little, it was all about the keiki-version of the American Dream–Be Cool, Stay in School… and you can be whatever you want. As a kid, the sky was the limit. I remember countless days spent daydreaming about the grand, exciting future that lay ahead for me. I’ve always dreamed big and in the process I’ve eaten my share of the disappointment that comes when you discover that there’s not really a market for an astronaut-veterinarian-artist. I often forget that children growing up these days are doing so in a completely different world. When my mother was in grade school and had to turn in a report, she used the encyclopedia. I did the same. In fact, none of my research was done on the computer and subsequently involved lugging around dusty books that weighed a ton and probably contained ridiculously outdated information. Kids these days have access to the Internet and all of its fresh, current information. Granted, a lot of the information that’s found on the Internet is worth a pile of dog poo, but books, magazines and newspapers have errors, too. The bottom line is that information is easily accessible. Yeah, kids still need to pick the relevant stuff out of a mess of worthlessness, but it’s a hell of a lot faster and better than quoting some long-dead professor from a book published in the 1970’s just because it was the only book on the subject available at the library. Of course, I also worry that living in the information age will cause our children to grow up quickly and ruthlessly. I think that little ones should be made to feel big and important–especially when they are tiny and dependent on others–because it gives them a sense of security and self-worth. But the Internet fills me with urgency that I’m sure is subliminally hitting keiki full in the face. For example, I’m writing a novel. Every time I go online, I find forums, groups and MySpace pages crowded with authors doing the same thing I am. That’s dissenheartening. Every time I check the headlines, there’s something about some super kid who graduated at six and within three years was doing brain surgery. Maybe that’s why reality television has become so popular. As we increasingly become aware of how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things, we cling to little quirks of authentic human nature just to remind us that we’re actually one in a million. Sorry— one in 6,659,884,382. Starr Begley would like to wish her oral surgeon–who stuffs gauze like the pro he is–a belated birthday. MTW
