LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR THE SPELLING WARS CONTINUE If you are going to criticize a letter writer (MTW 4/10/08, p. 5) about grammar and spelling, you might want to ensure that your own house is in order. Your reply to him had some questionable grammar (“a PR person” and “make fun of them”), and Starr Begley (MTW 4/10/08, p. 38) could use a [sic] some help from Spell Check (“dissenheartening” not having yet made its debut into the dictionary, sadly). EVEN WE SCREW UP I would hope that “Maui’s only locally owned independent newspaper” would be more vigilant. On page 8 of your March 27th issue, there was the always informative LC Watch. On page 9 of the same issue, an ad for Aloha Discount Liquor. The advertisement pictured a girl (a minor) standing next to a bottle of gin. Pono—do what is right! -Makawao Mama, submitted via Mauitime.com The Editor responds: Page 3 of our April 10, 2008 issue contained a formal apology from both this publication and Aloha Discount Liquor for that particular advertisement.

FREE THE WORMS! (Editor’s note: the following letter is in reference to our April 17, 2008

story “Leizu’s Legacy” and specifically statements made by artist Elaine Gima in that story) Geez, so if you were a worm and were dropped into a boiling pot of water and as you died you secreted silk strands and someone grabbed them and pulled them out of your boiled dying body onto a loom, would you be happy? “Coddled, clean and serene” BS… Yes, silk is a great material and enjoyable to wear but only at the death and suffering of millions of silk worms. DUH? At least a lot of the Asian people eat the silk worms for protein and then it is not a total loss. So get a clue when you say the worms thrive if “coddled and clean” until you drop em in the lobstah pot. -“Traveling gypsy,” via Mauitime.com

LC QUESTION (Editor’s note: The following letter is in response to our April 17, 2008 story “The Commissioner Who Drank Too Much”) The question is whether James Takeshi Viela is a FORMER alcoholic or not. Former alcoholics often make good members of liquor commissions because they are very strict on liquor violations. If he’s a current alcoholic, that’s not acceptable. -“One Opinion,” via Mauitime.com

China’s societal self-improvement in preparation for the 2008 Olympics continues. The Beijing Tourism Bureau ordered hotels to re-translate English signs, hoping to avoid such notorious past gaffes as “Racist Park,” which is now “Park of Ethnic Minorities,” and a cafe’s attempt to salute Western visitors with “Welcome, big nose friends.” And the Beijing Olympics Committee has been training hostesses for months to stand in military-like precision, straight enough to hold a sheet of paper between their knees, and to smile continuously, showing “six to eight teeth” (even if placing a chopstick in the mouth sideways is necessary for practice).

LABELWHORE!

STUPID SOFTBALL

Making artistic, themed scrapbooks is a $2.6 billion industry in the U.S. (nearly one-fifth as large as the adult-video industry) and has a “Hall of Fame” as protective of its morals as baseball’s, which has shunned gamblers and steroid-users. According to a January Wall Street Journal report, one “superstar” scrapbooker, Kristina Contes, was recently kicked out of the hall for violating etiquette by displaying another’s photo inside her scrapbook in a competition. Contes said the oversight was inadvertent but that she is now shunned within the community for her grave offense and called “labelwhore.”

Prison reformer James McDonough revealed in February the extent of the mess he inherited when taking over the Florida Department of Corrections in 2006 (40 officials charged with crimes, 90 fired, 280 demoted) and said much of the problem centered on interdepartment softball. Even though former officials had admitted to contract kickbacks and frequent taxpayer-funded “orgies,” McDonough said, “I cannot explain how big an obsession softball had become. People were promoted on the spot after a softball game... to high positions in the department because they were able to hit a softball out of the park... The connection between softball and the parties and the corruption and the beatings [of prisoners] was greatly intertwined.”

ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

Global Warning How eco-author Bill McKibben motivated people to take action on climate change I’m going to depress you for a few minutes,” was how noted environmental scholar and writer Bill McKibben began his Maui Community College appearance last week. “This rapid, rapid change in climate is big enough that it’s worth reviewing the cataclysm.” About a hundred people packed into the newly remodeled MCC student lounge to hear McKibben’s talk about climate change. A scholar in residence at Middlebury College in Vermont, McKibben traveled to Maui to participate in MCC’s three-day program of environmental presentations, in association with the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui. Four days later, hundreds more gathered at an Earth Day celebration at Baldwin Beach Park, joining hands to convey McKibben’s latest urgent warnings on global climate change to a worldwide audience. McKibben has authored a dozen books, on topics ranging from global warming to local communities, and from population dynamics to genetic engineering. In 1989 he published his first book, The End of Nature. It’s hailed as the first tome to reach a general audience about climate change. Since 1995 the scientific community has known that global warming was real, he noted. Since then there has been endless peer review but precious little action to correct it. The 10 hottest years in recorded history have all occurred since 1995. The predicted effects are larger, and happening faster than we originally understood. “A one degree temperature change has sent the planet into a tizzy and it could be five degrees by the end of this century,” McKibben said at MCC. “Mosquitoes love it and may spread to new regions, carrying with them malaria, dengue fever, and West Nile virus.” A dengue outbreak in Rio de Janeiro killed 87 people as of last week, and sickened nearly 100,000 others. McKibben reported that last summer’s Arctic ice melt was of historic proportions, with portions the size of California lost each week in August 2007. In fact, the Northwest Passage opened for the first time in human history. The melting of ocean ice caps is troublesome for numerous reasons, including that it exposes dark water that absorbs, rather than reflects, the

8

APRIL 24, 2008

sun’s light and heat. Should the 1.5 miles of ice covering Greenland melt, it could raise the world’s oceans 25 feet. Greenland’s glaciers are now exhibiting cracks and fissures, with melts “like Niagra Falls” pouring down and greasing the bottom of the glacier. Many scientists now feel that the oneto three-foot ocean rise predicted over this century may have been a dramatic underestimate. McKibben noted that NASA scientist James Hansen testified before Congress that a four- to six-meter (12- to 18-foot) rise in our oceans may be entirely possible. cKibben said he’s shifted his life from writing to organizing, at least for now. Beginning in January 2007, he and six college students set up an Internet site, StepItUp.org, demanding that Congress cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050. The effort “took off like a virus,” he said. By April 14, 2007, more than 1,400 global warming demonstrations took place across all 50 states. On Maui, the Hawaii PV (photovoltaic) Coalition organized helicopter photos of demonstrators linking hands and holding signs at Baldwin Beach Park, as part of the StepItUp efforts. In the past few seasons, beach erosion undermined and claimed decades-old majestic ironwood and false makani trees at that very location. “We have to very quickly get the whole world engaged in this process,” McKibben warned. “We need a really strong international accord [to limit greenhouse gas emissions] within the next two years. Otherwise, we’ll be dealing with the effects of global warming, rather than the causes.” To that point, McKibben has just launched another Internet campaign for climate change awareness. His new effort, 350.org, is based on a number he believes represents safety for the planet. In a Washington Post article published a few months ago, McKibben wrote that NASA scientist Hansen has indicated that the safe upper limit for atmospheric carbon dioxide is 350 parts per million (ppm), which we’ve already surpassed. Pre-Industrial Revolution amounts are estimated at 275 ppm, with ample data available from sources such as ice corings. On the Mauna Kea summit atop the Big Island, carbon dioxide sampling began in 1958, with levels at 315 ppm. Now, 50 years later, those levels have climbed to 383 ppm. Greater concentration of CO2 and other socalled “greenhouse gasses” are responsible for trapping more of the sun’s radiation

LC Watch Newbies As is well reported, the County of Maui has a lot of trouble finding people to sit on its many, many boards and commissions. Everyone wants to sit on the Planning Commission and play around with all those big development projects, but beyond that people are hesitant to donate their time and effort. For the most part, only retirees have the time (and interest) in doing stuff like that. That’s why it’s refreshing to see that the two newest members of the Liquor Control Adjudication Board are at least different than the typical retirees who usually sit on the county’s boards.

Bill McKibben within the Earth’s atmosphere, creating the “greenhouse effect.” McKibben’s passion for reversing these trends is apparent and contagious. “There’s never been any more important task in human history,” he said. “My goal is to tattoo the number 350 into every human brain. It represents safety.” He then drew a comparison with the CO2 target number, and a visit to a doctor who informs his patient that his cholesterol is high. “You know it’s not going to kill you right away,” he said. “But it places you at far greater risk. We need to change our lifestyle as a planet.” That means weaning ourselves from those fuels that produce millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions: coal, gas and oil. The fastest growing technology in the world is wind, McKibben, who has solar see GLOBAL, page 11

First up is Ralph Norio Masuda. Yes, he’s retired, but after 17 years as a vice president with Castle & Cooke (his $300 contribution to County Council Chairman G. Riki Hokama actually got him a brief story in the Jan. 25, 2007 issue of this paper). Prior to working for the biggest landowner on Lanai, Masuda spent 19 years working for the Maui County Mayor’s office and the county Planning Department. “With experience in county planning and private planning and Development (36 years),” Masuda wrote on his Board/Commission Application Form, “I believe that I can serve on a County Board and/or Commission as a member who is fully aware of government and private industry issues.” How understanding the meshing of land and power in Maui County will help Masuda decide the guilt or innocence of liquor licenses hauled up on charges is unknown, but maybe the other new member—Jason Harvey Medeiros—can help him. Medeiros is actually still a working guy—he listed his occupation as server at the Grand Wailea, where he’s worked since 1995. That’s right: Medeiros has at least 13 years firsthand experience actually working under the county’s liquor rules. Newbie or not, it should be interesting to see how much Medeiros’ new colleagues actually listen to him.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, Apr. 16 There was a tiny story on a new poll of homeowners posted on the Pacific Business News website two days ago that got virtually no play, possibly because much of the press is far more interested in the damage our three wonderful presidential hopefuls are doing to each other than that currently being inflicted on us by the current White House occupier. “Sixty percent said they definitely won’t buy a home in the next two years, up from 53 percent in the September 2006 poll,” reported PBN. “One in seven mortgage holders fear they won’t be able to make their monthly payments on time during the next six months.” These poll results, clearly due to the sub-prime mortgage crisis that hasn’t played itself out yet, are also clearly the fault of one President George W. Bush, who tried to sell the nation on his vaunted “Ownership Society” and told lenders as far back as 2002 “to unlock millions of dollars [and] make it available for the purchase of a home.” Like the invasion of Iraq, the bid to privatize Social Security, the big plan to make prescription drugs for seniors affordable, the move to rebuild New Orleans’ Hurricane Katrina damage, everything Bush has touched has withered and died. Yes, Richard Nixon was a criminal who soiled the White House with his sniveling presence, but at least he didn’t obliterate whole federal government departments and legacies. It’s funny to count down the days until Bush is out of Washington,

but sometimes I wonder if we as a nation will survive even those dwindling days.

THURSDAY, Apr. 17 Rubes. That’s the word that came to mind when reading the new state Auditor’s report on the Lingle Administration’s decision to exempt Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. (HSF) from state environmental laws. As in: “I can’t believe what a bunch of rubes we have running our state government.” Turns out—to no one’s surprise, I imagine—that our top state Department of Transportation (DOT) officials apparently never checked out HSF’s insistence that the reason they couldn’t do a full environmental assessment before starting Superferry service was because the federal government told them they had to get all their approvals by June 30, 2005. That date, which the auditor’s office discovered came not from the fed but from the ship-builder, “drove the entire process.” How’s this for a comedy of errors: “The then-deputy director of harbors [Barry Fukunaga, Governor Linda Lingle’s current chief of staff] told us he could not recall if the date was verified but that the department ‘probably’ did so because the department would not simply take Hawaii Superferry, Inc.’s word that all environmental clearances had to be given by June 30, 2005.” (Feel free to sigh audibly at this point.) In any case, emails obtained by auditors found that some DOT planners and engineers were skeptical of HSF claims but felt that no one would listen to them because the company was so cozy with the Lingle Administration: “Would like to be more agressive [sic] with HSF, but concerned they will run to the Governor and we will be painted as not being helpful,” one project engineer wrote in an late 2004 email.

FRIDAY, Apr. 18 So U.S. Congressman Neil Abercrombie (D, 1st District) is going after the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). What happened, Neil—is the War in Iraq not a bloody enough fiasco for you? According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, Abercrombie and two other congressional representatives want the Justice Department “to investigate whether the BCS is illegally restraining trade.” Oh brother: ask any sports fan what’s wrong the BCS—the insanely complicated arrangement that supposedly determines the “best” college football team each season—and you’ll get a fit of sputtering and fury. Abercrombie’s worry is that the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) is discriminating against schools, but I think he’s missing a larger injustice. In 2006, according to the paper “The Economics of College Sports:

Superferry has another super week

Cartel Behavior vs. Amateurism,” written that year by Cornell University’s Lawrence M. Kahn, NCAA basketball and football earned $675 million. Not one dime of that rather bloated sum ever [we absurdly hope] made it into the pockets of any NCAA athlete, because the association strictly mandates that all players maintain an amateur status. Not to put too Marxist a point on this argument, but since that money is almost entirely due to the labors of the NCAA players, not letting them share in the wealth is outright exploitation. The argument, of course, is that the players’ schools get a lot of that money, which in turn benefits the players. Of course, the vast majority of students never put on a jersey (so-called “free riders), so I’m going to stand by my original argument, though I’m sure there’s some know-it-all sports fan/economist who’ll take me to task for it.

SATURDAY, Apr. 19 Here we go again: with business running nearly as low as that month it spent all busted up in a Honolulu dry dock, all a boatload of bad pub swirling around the company from that recent state Auditor’s report, can you think of a better time for Hawai‘i Superferry to start up that second daily Oahu-Maui run they’ve long hinted at? “An afternoon voyage will benefit our customers who want the convenience of traveling later in the day,” HSF President and CEO John Garibaldi said in a release sent out last night. It’s gonna happen, too, mostly because, according to today’s Maui News, Mayor Charmaine Tavares has apparently dropped the

resistance she offered earlier this year when HSF announced they were doing a second run.

SUNDAY, Apr. 20 Earth Day is actually, technically, April 22, but everyone seems okay with celebrating it today—4/20. Go figure.

MONDAY, Apr. 21 Yesterday, The Maui News had a giant front page story (with giant color graphics) on the new county General Plan, which says we should all prepare for a 42 percent growth in population to about 186,300 residents. That will require 40,000 more homes, condominiums and apartments. Buried in the story (15 paragraphs in) is this undeniable statement: “Inadequate planning for growth on Maui already has led to overcrowded roads and schools and strain on the island’s fresh water supplies.” For more evidence of that, the reader had to do nothing more difficult than wait 24 hours for The Maui News story “Water levels Upcountry have officials worried.” We’re having trouble finding water for the people who live here now. Even with proper planning, how is adding 40,000 more homes going to make that easier?

TUESDAY, Apr. 22 And no, I don’t expect an answer. Get snarky news and commentary from Anthony Pignataro sent directly to you cell phone. Just text “follow apignataro” to 40404 and we’ll do the rest. MTW

THERE WILL BE TESORO All kidding aside, have you guys gassed up your car lately? Oh, are we so doomed. It’s still April—APRIL—and the price of oil is higher now than it’s ever been before, even adjusting for inflation. Right now 87 Octane is going for $4.19 a gallon in Wailuku. How bad will it be by the time summer rolls around? Five dollars a gallon? Six? Of course, even Tesoro doesn’t want the price that high: not only would hybrid sales soar, but people would start taking the bus like never before. And we all know how Big Oil views public transportation. So bask in your power and glory now, Tesoro, while you still can.

TOY STORY A&B may have started out here in Hawai`i, but lately they’ve been paying a lot of attention to the Deep South. Last week, Pacific Business News reported that the land-owning, sugar-growing, container-shipping giant paid $50 million for a one-million-square-foot industrial park in Savannah, Georgia. This is all just dandy for the company, except for this line in the April 17 story: “The majority of the facility, 711,000 square feet, has been leased to a toy manufacturer.” Given that A&B already announced that this manufacturer (the name of which PBN said “was not disclosed”) has “extensive manufacturing facilities in China,” and that the words “China,” “toys” and “lead” seem to go hand-in-hand these days, is this the best the company can do? MTW

ROBREPORT GLOBAL: continued from page 8 panels on his Vermont home, said. “But I won’t talk too long about technology. There’s no lack of technology or engineers. What we lack is political will.” Germany leads the world in solar panel installation, with Japan second. This is not because they have more of that resource available, but because they have plenty of support from government leaders. By contrast, McKibben said the U.S. has “a 20-year bipartisan effort to accomplish nothing, and it’s been 100 percent successful.” One audience member asked if there’s such a thing as “clean coal.” “Coal is a great temptation,” McKibben said. “It’s cheap and easy to get at. They can produce electricity in China from coal for two cents per kilowatt. In Appalachia they are literally blowing the tops off mountains to get coal.” Of course, this results in acid rain and high mercury levels in fish, as well as humans. “Remember, though, consumption is the big issue,” McKibben added. “The ‘more is better’ credo no longer works.”

tion carried into the early evening, with Mapenzi marimba band and Crazy Fingers among the many musicians who brought people to their feet to dance in the sand. The challenge is to harness the energy and people power at such an event, and to inspire collaborative action and political change of sufficient impact for a planetary course correction. Among those who heard McKibben’s talk last week was Melanie Stephens of Olinda, one of those inspired to contribute to the effort and the cost of a banner. “I think it was the combination of the sense

of serious urgency, coupled with a healthy dose of positivity,” she said when asked why she stepped up. “We don’t have much time to turn things around, so let’s get together and support our elected representatives to make the tough, tough changes. For me, that’s a message I can run with.” Maury King of Kihei agreed. “Bill is so bright and well informed about climate change issues,” he said. “It’s disappointing that like the recent Focus Green lecture series there weren’t a lot of people there from the county or the electric utility. I think those people need to get a little more

scared about the reality of things so they’ll be prompted to act more quickly. On the positive side, I really like his new 350 campaign and I think it’s great that we were able to be one of the first places on the planet to promote it.” Bill McKibben has been an astute educator for the past 25 years, tirelessly urging people to recognize the challenges before us and implement change. Wouldn’t it be great to see the inspirational seed he planted last week on Maui take root and blossom for the entire world to see? That’s up to all of us. MTW

sked about possible solutions, McKibben said local solutions are best, with local food as a powerful metaphor. He recommended his recent national bestselling book, Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and a Durable Future. He also urged the audience to design local actions to bring attention to the 350.org initiative. He suggested a photo of 350 rooftops that could all benefit from solar panels, or perhaps 350 surfers. “Send me the photos,” he said. Two days later, four of those who had heard McKibben’s talk paid for a banner. A quick collaboration was forged with organizers of the Baldwin Beach Park Earth Day festivities, including Bruce Douglas of Mandala Ethnic Arts in Paia. By Sunday afternoon, hundreds of Maui residents stood on the beach, forming the numbers three, five, and zero, holding the banner aloft for a helicopter flyover. Reached by phone on his way to speak in Monterey, California, McKibben was clearly delighted to hear his message conveyed to a broader audience. With a backdrop of local musicians, dancers, drummers, and environmental speakers, the Baldwin Beach event also drew two-dozen booths in the beach pavilion. Volunteers spread information about eco-efforts, Hawaiian sovereignty, genetic engineering, plants, foods and offered voter registration. The positive vibra-

ver since Eve coerced Adam into snacking on the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, then started snickering at his nakedness, fashion has been a major issue. What started off as a few fig leaves strategically placed against critical body parts has transformed into a huge industry full of hits and misses, plus-sized models and waifs, caftans and bikini’s. In fact, the fashion world is so big and diverse that this year we decided to focus specifically on local designers–people who dream up clothes and jewelry here on Maui–only. And we’re sure glad we did, because come to find out Maui designers are a lot more stylish and talented than even we believed. It's the truth. So move over Paris, New York and L.A.–Hawai`i’s moving up the fashion chain, and none of our designers will ever have to waste precious time by designing silly stuff like coats and earmuffs. Without further ado, we bring you our 2008 Fashion Issue.

Pam Peterson of Makawao is a gem. She’s been designing porcelain jewelry with a definite Hawaiian flavor for two decades. “It happened by accident,” Peterson says. “I was teaching art at Seabury [Hall] and started firing pieces with some of the students and people liked them and wanted to buy them.” Peterson, who is one-eighth Hawaiian, also taught art at Mid Pac and Punohou on Oahu. “After my children graduated, life took a turn and I realized that I had to make an income,” she says. “I did it with my jewelry and was able to keep my house and everything.” Her jewelry making is quite a process, with multiple firings and different temperature settings for each stage. Her work features all of the images that remind us of the culture of Hawai‘i, from petroglyphs to the Hawaiian quilt. You can find her work on Maui, Oahu, Big Island and Kauai. Here on Maui she has pieces in Collections, Martin and MacArthur, Maui Hands, Voyage and Hana Hotel’s gift shop. Of course, there are just two times a year when she offers her jewelry directly to the public–at Made in Hawaii and The Merrie Monarch Festival. For more information, please call one of the shops listed above. [STARR BEGLEY]

The last time we checked in with the fabulous ladies behind Wing’s Hawaii–Samantha Howard, Melody Torres and Becky Dosh–was 2004, and they were still designing clothing and jewelry out of the third bedroom of their house. Today Wing’s Hawaii has its very own, very adorable store at the Pauwela Cannery in Haiku where they still sell fashionable, comfortable, gorgeous clothing with handscreened elements like fern leaves as well as stunning jewelry. The only difference is that they’re even better at their craft then they were before. Which is kind of hard to believe, because they started out pretty damn strong. Besides selling their products at the Pauwela location, the girls let their creations out into the wild to be sold in places like Voyage, Maui Hands in Lahaina and Maui Riders. Their line is also available throuought Hawai`i and as far away as New York. Wings started out as a school project of Howard’s while she was attending the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Talk about a Maui success story. I wonder what they’ll be doing in another four years? For more information call 575-7870 or visit www.wingshawaii.com [SB]

Oh, how I love a skimpy bikini… but not too skimpy. I’m the kind of girl that wants a swimsuit that bares as much as I can get away with, without going over the line. Yes, that line is thin, but it’s there. Luckily Maui designer Sara McKusick has created her very own bikini style somewhere between the daring Brazilian and traditional American cuts. “‘Safari’ refers to all of the surf trips which I have been on in my life,” McKusick says. “These include traveling to Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, California, Indonesia, and Hawai`i. ‘Blue’ signifies my relationship to the ocean and how without it nothing in my life would even exist.” An avid surfer, McKusick wanted a bikini that was sexy and practical. This is no easy task. Today, you can find Safari Blue–suits that give you the best of both worlds–in Island Spice, HI Performance and Hana Highway Surf. It does no harm that Safari Blue suits aren’t just cut in a flattering way, but come in darling prints. My fave? Peacock! www.safaribluehawaii.com [SB]

Paradise Millinery founder Katherine Carey could be dubbed “The Mad Hatter.” Carey–besides being an all around artist–makes gorgeous hats from vintage fabric that scream, “Look at me! I am fabulous and totally unique.” Some of you may remember when Carey had a store in Paia. Maybe you’ve even been to one of her hatty-celebrations in the past. Word is that Carey is back to designing hats. Thank God—I mean, where else are you going to get as cool a hat as hers? “I started sewing and creating and before I knew I had a collection of unique hat originals in fabric,” she says. “I decided to have a ‘hat show’ and set it up with my friends as models and friends of my mom’s as potential clients. I remember my father being a little annoyed that he had to go downstairs and let all these women take over his living room. He changed his mind when after the two- to three-hour presentation I had cash and checks equaling $500! We all changed our minds at that point. I had discovered a business.” Carey’s hats are available at both Fifi and Bootzie and The Enchantress at the Shops of Wailea as well as at the Hui No E‘au. Maui Thing’s motto is “Stuck on Good.” I find it refreshing that there’s a clothing line of wearable art designed by people raised in the islands who want to send out local messages that are broader than just, “What Faka, What?” The clothing is all sweatshop-free and earth-friendly, meaning that little children aren’t stuck inside making your duds when they could be doing other fun stuff like tending sheep or playing Grand Theft Auto. Designs similarly reflect a positive lifestyle. My favorite design is the “Be Yourself” shirt for toddlers and children. It’s a simple pattern of tako (which is also Maui Thing’s logo) in different shades of a color with a single, bold-color tako sticking out like a sore tentacle. The message behind is, “In a sea full of look-a-likes, what’s a kid gotta do to get attention? You’ve got it. Be Yourself.” Other T-shirts rock messages of peace and the preservation of endangered species’ like the Hawaiian Monk Seal and Nene Goose. Maui Thing is political and peaceful for the mind, body and planet. They’ve got a Wailuku showroom and an online store. For more info visit www.mauithing.com [SB]

If I were to buy a piece of jewelry made by anyone on the island, I would probably choose something by Morphic Designs. Jewelry designer/silver and goldsmith Chris LaPolla creates the most unbelievably realistic and awesome skull jewelry on the planet. He uses a wax casting method, meaning that only a few pieces can be made at a time. Given the detail that he puts into each piece, it’s a time-consuming process. Besides rings that fans say are “ten times better than Keith Richards’ ring,” he also makes a pimp bracelet called Maui’s Hook–custom made to fit each individual perfectly–and gorgeous, humongous “Rock Candy” rings and bracelets with high-quality, multifaceted cubic zirconia stones set in precious metal. That’s superbling to the max. For more info www.morphicdesigns.com [SB]

Local designer Ivy Hannah started making bags for herself seven years ago when she couldn’t find sufficiently artsy ones to fit her personal style. Her unique and eye-catching bags, she says, got more attention on the street than expensive ones from big-name designers, prompting her to begin making them for her fans. The Fringe Bag is her favorite. This funky and perky design comes in bold shades of orange, yellow, pink and, for evening use, black, as well as in large, small and clutch sizes. Some are lined with material from gorgeous, vintage dresses and others have delicate bamboo handles. The Hula Bag became her personal trademark style when she began selling it at the Shops at Wailea and at trendy Upcountry boutiques. The grass skirt bag manages to look even more adorable when it’s stuffed to the max. She currently sells her bags out of her Makawao studio and can be reached at 280-0141. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

Chris Moore has been designing clothing on Maui–primarily garments made of silk–for about 20 years. Over the years, she’s worked in other people’s retail stores and run stores of her own. Today, she owns CY Maui in Wailea, a boutique geared to “resort” style clothing and Manikin, her studio/retail store in Wailuku. Since Manikin is so close to my office, I’ve been in it several times and always get sucked in to admiring the gorgeous colors and flowing fabric that goes with silk. There are lots of silk shirts and dresses; upstairs is full of myriad fabrics stacked chin high on worktables. But Moore keeps her sewing machine downstairs so she can keep an eye on the retail end of the store while remaining productive. She told me that her mom used to sew and when she was growing up there were always patterns strewn about the floor. She figures that’s why she can “see” patterns. Personally, I think she’s just a natural—a rare individual with a great eye for color and the way fabric drapes a human body. For more information call 891-0782 or email silk@cymaui.com [SB]

Since I moved to Maui my swimsuit wardrobe has quadrupled—from one to four bikinis. That puts me dead last in the competition to see who has the largest collection among my lady crew on the island, but back home in the chilly northwest I’ve got all my girlfriends beat. Like most girls, I’ve got the old standby that makes my bust go BaBoom and my back bootylicious. And I have the “what was I thinking?” funky print suit that hides in the bottom of a dresser drawer. But next time I decide to spring for beachwear I’m definitely going to hit up Maui Girl, where Debbie Kowalski Wilson’s colorful creations dominate the walls and racks. Several of her barely-there styles gave minimal coverage to Perfect 10 models this year in the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Celebrities like Gwen Stefani and Paris Hilton have scoured the racks in her funky store in search of something new to wear before hitting the Wailea waves. She makes some incredibly flattering and affordable solid and print separates in full to miniscule coverage styles, but I’m thinking of splurging on one of her super cute limited-edition skull print or pirate patterned ones that ring in somewhere closer to $200. At least I won’t have to worry about running in to another girl on the beach flaunting my style! 12 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-9266. [JA]

Ten years ago Jacob Perrault took a big dream and turned it into a little store. He wanted to travel the world to collect ancient stones and recycle them into exquisite new creations that people could collect and love—to give new life to old jewelry. “You can say we try to bring the most untouched stone in the world today,” he says, referring to his semi-precious stones that have never been dyed or treated for visual effect. He remakes the rare stones, which come from India, Africa, Nepal and Tibet into bracelets, necklaces and earrings using only pure silver. His daughter Sundora shares his passion for natural, antique stones and sells her own elegant line of jewelry. For many of her pieces she works with amethyst or jade beads and bold stone medallions connected with hoops of silver in varying sizes. All the pieces seem a little bit enchanted and infused with the age-old wisdom of a distant, ancient land. Little Tibet, corner of Makawao Ave. & Baldwin Ave. 573-2275. [JA]

The chunky designs that emerge from Andrea Alfedor’s Kula workshop may be chic enough for trendy L.A. hipsters, but they’ve also got a laid-back, wearable vibe that makes them totally appropriate for Maui ladies to flaunt on the beach. Her small collections start with the new and vintage materials with vibrant colors and textures that she personally seeks out to make her unique creations for Golden Child Jewelry, which not only get space in exclusive Maui boutiques but in her new L.A. showroom and on the shelves at a new Fred Segal store in Santa Monica. Her pieces adorned the beauties in the 2008 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, too. Alfedor’s new project is a collaboration with Letarte Swimwear, another fashionable Maui design company. I’m completely in love with Golden Child necklace designs, which fearlessly vary between minimalist beaded strands of kukui, teal and mother of pearl and bright, bold chandeliers of iridescent capiz shells. www.goldenchildjewelry.com [JA]

I love, LOVE artist and designer Tami Snodgrass of Chicks with Sticks. Her artwork is super chill yet edgy and funky. And the clothing she displays said art on is 100 percent plain comfortable. Snodgrass has been designing and handscreening her Chicks with Sticks line for about four years. In that time it hasn’t changed much. Snodgrass still surfs every day and her clothing line is still going strong. Her first batch of T-shirts was given away to women who surfed and worked on the North Shore. Today, a fun collection of illustrated surfer-girls doing everything from sipping martinis to holding guns in between catching waves is available on undies, T-shirts, tanks and even tunic dresses at Hana Hwy Surf, Neil Pryde Maui and Kamali`i Surf all the way in Virginia. Maui has been blessed with stunning Tamara Catz designs for more than eight years now, but some of the biggest changes in Catz’s career have occurred in the years since we featured her Spring 2005 collection in Maui Time’s first Fashion Issue. Her line of elegantly bohemian clothes are still richly hand-embroidered and stitched to chic perfection, but instead of distributing her collections around Maui in various hip boutiques she’s finally opened her own beautiful Paia clothes haven where her adoring fans and delighted newcomers to Catz style can find most of her exceptional creations in one place. “The feel of the collection is the same; handmade and one of a kind, but I’ve been focusing on retail and concentrating on designing more exclusively for my store,” she told me. She’s also been focusing on an exciting new line of “green label” items made from organic fabrics that will still have the luxurious Tamara Catz style, but with a new sense of global responsibility. Possibly the biggest change in her designs came last summer when she began a wedding collection. She describes the dresses as light, simple and elegant styles for island brides that are timeless, but in a modern way. I’d describe them as breathtakingly beautiful, flowy and unique un-bridal like dresses that a girl could actually wear more than one time, the kind of dress that makes you want to be barefoot on the sand with the man of your dreams. The same is true for her collection of bridesmaid dresses. I’m sure any girl would be happy to shell out for one of these gorgeous creations since they’re the kind of thing that could rotate through a closet for a lifetime. Jeanette Hablewitz collects antique beads and charms–made of glass, stone, bone, ivory, teeth (for real!), silver, brass, copper, coins, amulets, amber and shells–from around the globe. Some are over 2,000 years old. She then uses them for the impossible-to-duplicate jewelry that she’s been selling at the Maui Swap Meet for the last 18 years. “People are baffled as to why I sell at a swap meet but I love The Maui Swap meet, and consider it the only place on Maui that you can integrate with every and any kind of person, ethnic group and economic group,” Hablewitz says. Her creations are intoxicatingly attractive. There’s been many a Saturday where I’ve been tempted to pile on about 30 necklaces and make a mad dash for the parking lot, but alas, stealing from such a creative-soul would be deadly on my karma points. “I love my work and consider my jewelry desk a ‘meditation cushion’ where I relax, clear my mind of thoughts, and let the creations flow through me,” Hablewitz says. “This peace I feel while creating I hope to be sharing with those people who wear my jewels.” For more information visit www.jeanettehablewitz.com [SB]

Yoki Meyer has been busy since she was profiled in our first Fashion Issue back in 2004. While she’s still creating adorably lacy little thongs, bras and camisoles designed to enhance and flatter female figures, her line of pretty panties has taken a turn for the comfortable. Stretch lace and silk have been replaced by cotton/lycra and rayon/lycra blend fabrics in many of her designs, which these days lean more toward the cheeky, flirtatious boy short and sporty brief styles than the bare-it-all thong. Of course, her new styles are still as sexy as ever, with plenty of embroidery and netting in soft, stretchy fabrics. And while Meyer remains passionate about designing luxury items for ladies to wear beneath their clothes, her home business has grown to include wedding alterations. She adores working with brides to tweak and transform off-the-rack wedding dresses to get the perfect customized fit so that they’ll look their ultimate best on their big day, and those who seek Meyer’s personal attention on their gowns often find something sexy and delicate from her collection to don underneath or reveal on their honeymoon. Buyer beware! Anne Laure Giordano, owner of AnAloha in Lahaina, not only speaks with a delicious French accent that sounds incredibly sexy, but she creates smoking hot clothes as well. “When I came to Maui, I would pick up a beautiful dress, but when I look at the price tag it’s hundreds of dollars,” she told me. “So I thought, I can make this dress myself.” And she did. Giordano’s designs are difficult to describe, but easy to wear. The style definitely compliments island living, but also hold a distinct European flavor. Giordano uses fabric that is “Lahaina temperaturefriendly” like cotton, silk and rayon jersey. Giordano favors curvy women (“They have the boobs and the butt”) so most of her designs are loose around the belly, forgiving at the waist and yet still sexy as hell. Her designs also feature little abalone shell or red coral adornments and often boast Hawaiian sayings and flora and fauna imagery. And she has a line of men’s button-down shirts that are hot enough to induce some major “met this really hot guy on the beach last night” fantasies. I remember when Judith Maurice and Britta Alexandra first opened up The Enchantress in Paia and later at the shops of Wailea. What I don't remember is when they began to lovingly refer to each other as Fifi and Bootzie which, by the way is the name of The Enchantress' sister store in The Shops of Wailea. I have always loved the beautiful designs that have come from the two women–espessially the silk jackets by Judith who carefully chooses the colors and pattern that goes into each masterpiece. Initially the jackets were made to compliment the silk sarongs that they carry, but if you ask me, they can easily be a stand alone piece. I could spend hours thinking up new and creative ways to wear one. And I'm not alone–Paris Hilton loves The Enchantress and all of the beautiful goodies that it holds. Say what you want, but I'd be willing to stand up and fight anyone who wants to say that Hilton doesn't have good fashion sense. To quote Hilton on The Enchantress, "That's hot!" ONO KINEGRINDS

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

EW Drive In The little restaurant with the giant menu The Monte Cristo sandwich is a very curious thing. Named for the Alexandre Dumas novel, some say the sandwich dates back to 1910, to an obscure French dish. Others say its origins only go back to the fifties, and that it comes not from an exotic European kitchen, but the Disneyland theme park. On paper, everything about the sandwich seems wrong. There are many variations, but most start with a simple blend of ham, turkey and cheese on white bread. Then the whole thing is dipped in egg batter and fried (!),topped with powdered sugar (!!) and served with some sort of preserves for dipping (!!!). When I was growing up in Southern California, it seemed that every restaurant had this on their menu. Then one day last week, I suddenly realized that I hadn’t seen one in forever. What triggered this case of culinary recollection was a trip over to the EW Drive In, an eclectic little restaurant in Wailuku. Because of the hyperactive, often unstable dining industry on Maui, we’re forever describing new

restaurants in terms of what used to be there before. In EW’s case, it’s in the old Fiesta Time spot in Wailuku (the old restaurant name is still scratched into the concrete at the front door).

EW Drive In 1132 Lower Main St., Wailuku, 243-8800. Open Mon 10 a.m.2:30 p.m.; Tues-Thur 10 a.m-8:30 p.m.; Fri-Sat 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; closed Sun. $

EW, which sells all manner of local plate lunches, noodles dishes, seafood and sandwiches, sells a Monte Cristo. It’s served on bread dipped in egg batter with turkey, ham, cheese and tomatoes. Though there’s no powdered sugar on top, it does come with preserves for dipping. It’s also really tasty. That a tiny hole-in-the-wall joint like EW would have such an unusual sandwich as the Monte Cristo isn’t all that surprising. EW—which stands for “East-West”—is a little restaurant with a giant menu. They offer Shrimp Scampi, spaghetti, Luk Fun, crispy won tons, Chicken Parmesan, chili con carne, Shrimp Asparagus, Gon Lo Mein,

Yang Chow, curried and local style) and a bunch of other stuff I can’t remember right now. It’s a dizzying mix of cultures and culinary tastes, sometimes in the same item. Mostly, I’ve gone in for the sandwiches. Served hot or cold, on white or wheat hoagie rolls with Swiss, provolone or cheddar cheese, they’ll fairly good sized

and reasonably priced. You can get them will all the usual sliced meats, and there’s a BLT, tuna and the aforementioned Panko Ono. EW sells mac salad as well as “waffle fries,” which are quite good, but every sandwich comes with a special kind of “tropical coleslaw” made with pineapple that’s extremely good.

No matter what you order, please save room for dessert. EW Drive In also makes cakes to order, these incredible little tarts—chocolate, coconut custard, strawberry—and something wickedly good called a chango, which is a kind of “burrito” with cheesecake filling that’s covered with caramel sauce, sliced bananas and strawberries. MCDONALD’S No, I am not getting paid to endorse the Golden Arches. I wish! The fact of the matter is that McDonald’s has totally stepped up its game with their Premium Roast. Its flavor in no way resembles the dishwater, stomach-burning cups of yuck that they used to serve. Also, you can even request that they add your cream and sugar for you, which is awesome. COLLEEN’S Originally this place started off as a little coffee place, but it hasn’t been little and the focus hasn’t been coffee in a long time. Frankly, there isn’t a better place to get coffee in Haiku. Never mind that Colleen’s is probably the only place to get coffee in Haiku. What I love most about their coffee is that they offer different types of sugar–white, brown, turbinado–and most of the time you can even choose whipping cream to lighten it up. Chicago Friday (Apr. 25) 7 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater, MACC [CONCERT] Chicago is one of those bands that really doesn’t need any hype because they are just plain awesome. They’ve passed the test of time with flying colors and little to no spandex. They have so many hits that it’s just ridiculous. Young or old, I’m pretty sure everyone that has had access to an FM radio is familiar with “25, or 6 to 4,” “If You Leave Me Now,” “You’re the Inspiration,” and “Saturday in the Park.” Chicago has been rocking out and pleasing fans for more than 40 years. The band formed way back in 1967 and has been topping charts, going platinum and having streets named after them ever since. Long live Chicago and may they continue to grow old gracefully… That was a hint for you, Steven Tyler. Tickets: $66, $56, $46. For more information www.mauiarts.org, 242-7469. [STARR BEGLEY]

FAME in Paia

Thursday (Apr. 24) 9:30 p.m., at Casanova, Makawao

Friday (Apr. 25) 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at Paia General Store Building

[POETRY] If you’ve got rhythm and something to say, throw down at this super-special third birthday, no-rules spoken word competition. No rules means music, props and costumes are fair game, just this once, to spice up your original work of three minutes or less. Did I mention that there’s a Ben Franklin on the line? Probably the fastest $100 you’ll ever make. Personally, I don’t have a poetic bone in my body and would probably rather stick sharp things under my fingernails than get on stage. But the good news is that people like me who clam up at the thought of public speaking but enjoy living vicariously through people who totally rule the mic can enjoy poetry as a spectator sport at MauiSLAM. There’s also going to be a funky disco jam courtesy of DJ Boomshot and lots of birthday cake. $5 at the door; two for one entry with MACC ticket stub for Sweet Honey in the Rock. 572-0220. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

[EVENT] Does anyone else remember the Paia General Store when it was actually a store? I do, and it was awesome. The area has changed dramatically since I lived in the neighborhood as a kid, but Paia is still pretty cool. On Saturday, Paia General Store building is celebrating Fashion, Art, Music and Entertainment. Get it? FAME! There will be artist demonstrations, amazing photography by Daniel Sullivan, special deals and live music. Hana Hwy Surf is featuring a bikini blowout sale and there will be original oil paintings by Maggie Sutrov and sculpture by Jake Bonnell at Sutrov Gallery, special prices at The Wine Corner and Fiesta Time and more. For more information indigopaia@gmail.com or call 579-9199.

Taro Mania

Happy Birthday to Tree

Saturday (Apr. 26) 9 a.m.-5 p.m. & Sunday (April 27), 7:30-10:30 a.m.; at Hana Ball Park

Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 26-27) 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Banyan Tree Park, Lahaina

[EVENT] Statement of the obvious: taro is a great, big deal. Besides being the mythological progenitor of the Hawaiian people, the nutritional cornerstone of the native diet, the stimulus for agricultural development in many parts of the State and the basis of the Hawaiian concept of ohana, it’s also the center focus of a massive two-day party in Hana. The East Maui Taro Festival, now in its 16th year, brings cultural appreciation and awareness about the importance of the mighty taro to the community with poi pounding demonstrations, educational information booths, food booths that serve unique taro recipes, hula, chant, music and arts and crafts. Kathy “Tita” Collins will emcee hours of fun and entertainment on Saturday. Sunday activities will kick off with a delicious taro pancake breakfast before tours of the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kapalu Living Farm. All activities are free. Breakfast: $9 adult, $6 keiki. 264-1553 or www.tarofestival.org for more info. [JA]

[EVENT] If trees could talk, I’m sure that the Banyan Tree in Lahaina would have a lot to say. It was first planted on April 24, 1873. I like to imagine that over the years, it has witnessed so many little moments and filtered a multitude of human emotions through its leaves. How many break-ups and makeups, kisses and shoves, lies and promises, drug deals and gifts of charity have taken place beneath its branches? How many children who played in its shade have grown into grandparents? What has it been like to grow from a sapling blowing in the wind into a gigantic tree that fills almost an entire park? This weekend, Lahaina celebrates the Banyan Tree’s 134th birthday, complete with birthday cake, a clown, piñatas, artists and activities for the kids. Free. New Tina Fey comedy delivers Baby madness happily invades the brain of Philadelphia bachelorette and thriving businesswoman Kate Holbrook (gleefully played by Tina Fey) who, at the age of 37, hires a surrogate mom to birth her sperm bank assisted baby. Amy Poehler plays Angie Ostrowiski, the white trash bimbet whose uterus will host Kate’s kin while she soaks up Kate’s upper class lifestyle as her temporary roommate. Poehler and Fey display a snappy on-screen chemistry that supports writer/director Michael McCullers’ quick-witted set pieces. Steve Martin makes a rare and humorous appearance as Kate’s crunchy granola boss, and supporting cast members Greg Kinnear, Sigourney Weaver, Romany Malco and Maura Tierney keep the laughs bubbling. Surrogate motherhood is the comic topic of the day, and this is one funny chick flick that won’t rankle male members of the audience. Michael McCullers (co-writer on the

Yeah, pregnancy is funny Austin Powers movies) makes a feature film debut that profits hugely from Saturday Night Live as a pervasive influence of tone.

Tina Fey loses herself in a role that draws you in on a primal level because everyone understands the alarm of a woman’s biological clock going off like a three-alarm fire. McCullers pays attention to detail to mine humor from Kate’s trips to the sperm bank, bathroom, and surrogate baby company consultant Chaffee Bicknell (Sigourney Weaver), whose ability to give birth in her ‘50s backhandedly ridicules Kate’s desperation. Class conflict is at the core of the story. Angie is a trash-talking girlfriend to her high school beau Carl (Dax Shepherd), who still drives around in the same old red Trans Am and has an eye on splitting the $10,000 from

Angie’s surrogate pregnancy. Dax Shepherd may only have one character in his repertoire, but he knows it well. Carl is set up as a false antagonist pulling at Angie, whose entree into a world of financial liberty brings out her true nature as a responsible adult, but only after many goofy incidents. One great example of Angie’s confused social graces comes when she answers Kate’s door to find Kate’s courting love interest Rob (Greg Kinnear). “Do come in,” Angie says with an emphasis on the “do.” Amy Poehler’s comic phrasing goes off on a tear as she lies about being Kate’s sister and takes a cell phone call from Europe for which she speaks broken Spanish. Kate leaves for her date with Rob with her toothbrush sticking out of her mouth. It’s these kind of detailed comic touches that keep adding up to reveal layers of character in Kate and Angie as opposite sides of the same coin. Baby Mama, a ghetto term turned mainstream thanks to K-Fed and Britney Spears, is a comedy of female humor set to spin by its gifted performers. The film’s producers’ aim to attract viewers for Tina Fey’s television show 30 Rock is a worthy goal if generating this level of comedy is the thing movie audiences get in exchange. As with all comedy, it’s all in the delivery. MTW

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Don’t underestimate how little logic comes into this. The arguments you’re up against are so out there that you may be tempted to laugh at them, certain they’re jokes, because no one could be that ridiculous. Right? Of course, if you do crack up, the situation will only worsen; if there’s one thing an irrational person dislikes more than their viewpoint being disregarded, it’s being mocked. So, what do you do when faced with a situation where logic has no traction, and your sarcastic comments are completely missed? You have to be wily and trick them into seeing things your way, if you can. That should be possible, given your advantageous position and perspective. Remember: no snickering!

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Keep chipping away at it. Though the process you’re involved in is slow, like digging through a prison wall with a spoon, it will ultimately result in success, as long as you’re incredibly patient. I know patience isn’t your strong suit, but it should help you to know that you are getting somewhere, even if your progress at times is almost imperceptible. What might also encourage you is this: there’s someone on the other side of the wall doing exactly the same thing. See, it’s not so bad! You don’t have to get all the way through by yourself. Someone’s meeting you in the middle, and will be just as elated as you when you both break through.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) A good friend of mine is trying to time her pregnancy to produce a Cancer child. I tried to warn her that you guys are moody, unpredictable, and sensitive. I told her that feeling trumped logic for you almost every time. “Yes,” she agreed happily. Evidently she likes all those things about you. Luckily for you, she’s not the only one. You have lots of fans (even if it sometimes doesn’t feel like it), and this week many of them will be coming out of the woodwork to express their appreciation of you. Make yourself easy to find.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) When someone gets pissed off at you this week, for no good reason that you can see, you’ll be tempted to hold it against them. I agree, it’s no fun being the victim of a stupid misunderstanding, wrongful assumptions, or a plainly faulty thought process, but I hope you can be the bigger person here, and not nurse a grudge or plans of vengeance. They’ll figure out their mistake sooner or later, and having to contend with you being annoyed or retaliatory on top of their own embarrassment will just needlessly complicate the situation and make it that much harder to resolve.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Man, you’re stubborn. Capricorns and Leos might dig in their heels in more obvious ways, but in the end they’re easier to move than you are. Personally, I love your tenacity and willingness to stick to your guns. That said, however, there are times when it’s really in your best interest to give ground. This is one of them. Can you see past your own decision to its long-term consequences? Remember there’s more than one person involved here, and even though you may be “in the right” the bigger picture might include elements that make you truly miserable, if “being right” remains your only consideration.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) This situation has been out of whack for ages, and you haven’t been able to bring to it the balance you crave. The reason why is because the people involved don’t understand the pieces you’re putting on the other side of the scale, or why they’re important to you. They’re never going to give those things weight or credence until you convince them of their worth. Right now, some of the stuff you’re allowing to influence your decision seems illogical or unimportant from their perspective. This week, enlighten them (again, if necessary). They’re more likely to listen than ever before.

When under attack, you have a few choices on how to respond. You could run and hide, or turn over and surrender. You might toughen yourself up so you could simply take the punches with little to no effect. Full on retaliation—eliminating the threat entirely—is always an option. You could also simply refine your reflexes until you’re able to dodge nearly every blow. Naturally, continuing to simply suffer as you have been is a possibility, too, though I hope you’re ready to explore other options. The first two choices I suggested—flight or submission—are not at all your style, so I’d suggest any combination of the next three. This week, figure out and implement whatever you suspect will work for you.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Most of the Sagittarians I know are able to feel at home anywhere they go. They can curl up on someone’s sofa with the same peaceful serenity other signs can only experience in their own beds in their own homes. I have no idea how you carry this feeling of sanctuary with you when you go places, nor how you muster so much grace while doing without habitual comforts. Won’t you share at least one or two of your trade secrets? There’s someone you know and love who could really benefit from them right now.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

STOPP FEDERALL EDUCATION www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/education/ Ron Paul has not and will not quit the presidential race. “The federal government does not own our children. Yet we act as if it does by letting it decide when, how, and what our children will learn. The federal government has no constitutional authority to fund or control schools. ($8,922 in HI)... per student per year... (is) the cost for our public school. We can resurrect our public school system if we follow the Constitution and end the federal education monopoly.” - Congressman Ron Paul

People may give you shit for being so contrary so often, but it’s your unique perspective that makes you special. You see the beauty in a grim rainy day, how it makes the greenery outside look so lush. While everyone else is bemoaning the “crappy weather” and longing for sunshine, you’re simply happy. While you’ve learned to not always present the opposing viewpoint—because people get annoyed—in this case you ought to anyway. It might raise some hackles, but it could also bring a perspective that’s just a little more joyful (or at least serene) into some unhappy person’s life.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’re a tree on a trip. Someone bound up your roots in a dirt-filled burlap sack, threw you in a truck, and shipped you somewhere. Now you’ve finally been stuck in the ground and at last your poor cramped roots have a chance to unfurl, take hold, and feed you enough to allow you to grow. Your journey must have been uncomfortable at best, and miserable at worst, but please don’t waste time resenting those who put you through all that. Instead, take a breath, and a look at your new situation, which is rife with new opportunities, some you may never have even imagined before. Like it or not, they did you a favor. The sooner you can realize that and move on, the better.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You may feel that recent events represent the last nail in your metaphorical coffin. Sure, if you keep on as you have been, it won’t be long before you’re effectively (and still metaphorically) dead and buried, but there’s still an amazingly good chance to turn this around. It’s just a matter of shifting your perspective and rethinking not only your destination, but your route. After all, a well-built coffin could probably make a decent boat, or shelter from the rain, or toboggan, with only a few adjustments. What minor alterations can you make to this seemingly untenable situation that will turn it on its head? This week is a good one to try to implement any that you can think of.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) While it might not always be your number one purpose to create more joy and beauty in people’s lives, please make it so this week. Why you? First off, you’re especially good at it, when you’ve a mind to be. Second, it’ll be a blast. Third, what else have you got going on? If you can really make an argument that whatever you’re up to is so important that you can’t spare a little of your time and energy—or preferably, most of it—to enlivening and enriching the live of a few others, then so be it. But if you can’t come up with an amazingly good reason for not doing so, I fully expect you to make this your top priority, pronto.

Passing the Torch Our husbands are talking golf and you’re knitting. Life is over. -My best friend Recently, my daughter has taken to dividing our family into teams. There’s the “Crazy Team”–membership requires a strong desire for fun, mischief and excitement–and the “Careful Team,” which is where she groups the boring people. Naturally, because my nickname as a kid was “Wild Podagee,” I assumed that I was on the Crazy Team. But while talking about it with my husband late one night after the kids went to sleep, I discovered that I’m actually the captain of the Careful Team. “How bad can it be? Your mom’s on the team,” said the hubby. I went to sleep thinking that there must be some mistake. My mom and I are fire and water. Growing up, my dad and I were on one team and mom and my brother on the other. I created the Crazy Team for chrissake! The next morning, I confronted the child. Her explanation wasn’t comforting. To her, I am a killer of joy, a lid on a jar of laughter, the fun police, the squelcher of all things hilarious. I’m Mom. While trying to explain that just because I don’t want her to get squished like a bug on the street or choke to a miserable death on a piece of popcorn doesn’t mean that I’m boring. In fact, I told her, I’m probably the most exciting person you know. The look on her face said that she was unquestionably calling “bullshit” on me. At least up until my early twenties, I’ve been a wild child. My friends could count on me to jump the cliff first, ride the horse bareback, do the body shot, take that extra tab and dance on the table. Looking back, I’m not sure how I survived it all. I was always the kind of person who couldn’t stand to lose or get outdone by someone and would go to great lengths in all my relationships to push the outside of that envelope. And while I occasionally tap into my crazy-side–I freaked Prince!–those moments are few and far between. I’m okay with that. Maybe it is time to pass the torch to the next generation of ruffians who stay out until three drinking beer in the parking lot after a long night of talking anarchy. The other night, my brother called and we got to talking about how growing up you feel this pressure to start living your life and then one day you realize that this is it–you’re doing it. I think that I’m finally there. I’ve been accused of “losing my spirit” and–according to my daughter–being boring, but the fact of the matter is that I’m finally content and don’t feel the nagging sensation of restlessness constantly eating at me. And not to mention, at least after a long night of knitting I just wake up with blurred vision and stiff fingers. Which sure beats the hell out of a Killian’s hangover. Starr Begley bets she could beat you. MTW
