ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

Consumer retorts Finding real wealth in a home-grown economy “Money, it’s a gas/Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.” - Pink Floyd he looming economic downturn has sent a chill across the United States and throughout the globe, as if Darth Vader had just walked into the room. Great political debate is focused on how to prop up our failed economic system, through a combination of bailouts and infusions of capital seeking to create jobs and spur spending, even while increasing our national debt—now more than $11 trillion and increasing by close to $4 billion daily.

T

The World Trade Organization (WTO) and World Bank espoused the altruistic goals of offering an economic hand up to third world countries around the globe. But rather than build wealth from the skills and resources of indigenous communities, the WTO brought in multinational corporations to exploit cheap labor and abundant resources, often creating one-dimensional economies without regard to environmental or social justice. Far from humble beginnings around 600 B.C., when Lydians in ancient Turkey stamped precious metals into coins as accounting chits for barter of grain, livestock and other commodities, our 21st century monetary system has devolved into an

Our current economic practices erode ecosystems and cater to the golden calves of tourism, real estate development and construction. President Obama has been both praised and criticized for his humongous economic stimulus package, aimed at providing relief to the auto industry, mortgage lenders, insurance giants, and teetering banks and Wall Street investment firms. Less focus has been given to the causes of the predicament Obama inherited: a virtual financial inferno stoked by President George W. Bush’s massive tax cuts to the ultrawealthy, combined with the expense of two foreign wars sold to the American taxpayers as emergency appropriations against global terrorism. The American dollar, once backed with gold and silver, now is bolstered by little more than bank promises and Wall Street wishes. Three hundred million Americans, locked into our consumer culture, resemble gerbils on a treadmill, earning and spending as fast as they possibly can but getting nowhere. Many have watched in dismay as their 401(K) retirement funds evaporated, stock market investments plummeted, or inflated home mortgages thrust them into foreclosure. Sadly, the American Dream has become an export commodity, with the mega-populations of China and India now aspiring to Western ways, conveniences and conspicuous consumption.

artificial construct, in which the relentless quest to acquire more money perpetuates a system that dilutes real wealth. o what’s a revolutionary sort to do? Certainly there are better options than holding roadside protest signs in “tea party” kvetching over our tax and spend government practices—aren’t there? YES! magazine co-founder David Korten, in a recent commentary writes that Wall Street bailouts coupled with economic stimulus packages, “amounts to trying to revive an economic system that has failed in every dimension: financial, social, and environmental. Rather than prop up a failed system, we should use the financial crisis as the opportunity to create a system that works.” Korten contends that Wall Street’s modus operandi is creating more money for rich people, but without actually producing anything of real value. Their inflated claims of wealth without increasing a supply of goods, he says, actually makes it harder for the rest of us to meet our needs. “Real wealth,” says Korten, “is, first of all, the tangible things that support life— food, shelter, clothing. Of course, the most valuable forms of real wealth are those that are beyond price: love; a healthy, happy child; a job that provides a sense of self-worth and contribution; membership in a strong, caring community; a healthy vibrant natural environment; peace.”

S

LC Watch Budgetary considerations

Korten believes the Wall Street-driven economic system, with the fantastic amounts of money it generates, actually diminishes or destroys these many forms of real wealth. Perhaps the most apparent example is the price the fossil fuel-bolstered global economy has exacted upon the planet’s fragile forests, oceans, inland waters and weather patterns. More than half the world population— some 3.5 billion people—now lives in urban environments, often far from food supplies, watersheds and locales where goods are made. As any part of the overall supply system is affected or strained, these enormous population centers could deteriorate into chaos or anarchy, as survival instincts trump civility. Yet many continue to cruise through life undaunted, pulling out their drastic plastic credit cards to cover purchases they hope to pay off later, even as their interest rates soar. “There are some things money can’t buy—for everything else, there’s Master Card.” David Korten celebrates the model of a “Main Street Economy…comprised of local businesses and working people who produce real goods and services to meet the real wealth needs of their communities.” This, he maintains, “is the logical foundation on which to build a new, real wealth economy of green jobs and green manufacturing, responsible community-oriented businesses, and sound environmental practices.” arly Hawaiians developed a subsistence economy, based on highly sophisticated agricultural production of taro and other crops, and on food caught, gathered or raised in the ocean. No monetary system was in place at the time Captain James Cook sailed to the islands. The concept of wealth, however, did hold a place in Hawaiian culture. The Hawaiian word waiwai, meaning goods, worth or prosperity, has its etymological roots in the word wai, or fresh water. Early residents of the islands recognized the vital connection between this precious natural

A few questions regularly surface in the LC mailbag. One of the more popular is: how much money does the department get? As the county irons out its 2010 budget, now is a good time to take a look. First, a little recent history. In 2007, the Department of Liquor Control’s budget—including salaries and wages, operational costs and equipment—was $2,091,916. That figure grew to $2,284,443 in ’08 and jumped again in ’09, to $2,823,484. In all three years, salaries and wages accounted for about half of the department’s total cost. The draft version of the LC’s proposed 2010 budget seeks another increase, to $2,920,481. Salaries and wages would grow by about $28,000, with operational costs remaining essentially unchanged. The big uptick comes in equipment. The LC is asking for money to replace “two…vehicles utilized to carry out departmental responsibilities as well as inspectional and investigational duties.” One other noteworthy aspect of the proposed budget is the section titled “Accomplishments for Calendar Year 2008.” The first accomplishment listed? “Conducted several ‘minor decoy stings’ which included Lanai and Molokai.” Considering that every case heard by the department’s Adjudication Board so far this year has involved a minor decoy sting, it’s a safe bet the program will be listed as an “accomplishment” again next year.

analyst (quoted by The Nation magazine for an April story), that’s the way Congress’ 2005 legislation to encourage “alternative” fuels has been exploited by the paper industry. Company representatives have until now been proud that the paper industry supplied most of its own fuel, as a by-product of making paper, but when it discovered the tax credit, it reworked its factories to accept a mixture of the incumbent by-product and ordinary diesel fuel, thus creating an “alternative” fuel and earning the credit, which, for example, was worth $71.6 million to International Paper Co. in March and is not scheduled to expire until December.

In April at a New York City gallery, the Australian performance artist Stelarc starred in a video of his surgery in which an ear is implanted into his left forearm (right now, just a prosthesis, but to which stem cells will be added), which will house an Internet-accessed, Bluetooth-capable microphone. “Post-evolutionary strategies” are required, Stelarc told The New York Times, because the current state of the body is obsolete. Other exhibits at the “Corpus Extremus (LIFE+)” exhibit included a genetically modified goat that produces super-strong spider’s silk. In an earlier project, Stelarc wired half his muscles to computers in Paris, Helsinki and Amsterdam, to understand a semi-controllable “split-body experience.” Stelarc’s self-appraisal: “[I’m] never in [my] comfort zone.”

COP OUT Retired rogue New York City police detectives Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito, who were convicted in 2006 of assisting the Mafia for many years (including with assassinations), were sentenced to life in prison plus 80 to 100 additional years. However, because the men retired from the force before they had been charged with crimes, they are entitled by law to their lifetime pensions of $5,313 a month and $3,896 a month, respectively.

RESURRECTION EXCEPTION Baltimore prosecutors were stuck in their case against cult leader “Queen Antoinette,” 40, whom they had charged in the starvation death of a young boy who was being punished for failing to say “Amen” at mealtime. They would need the cooperation of the boy’s mother, cult member Ria Ramkissoon, 22, but she was refusing to flip on the Queen, whom she believed would eventually resurrect her son from the dead. Finally in March, the judge announced a breakthrough: Ramkissoon would cooperate, but prosecutors would promise in writing to drop all charges if the Queen eventually brings the boy back.

SUPPORTING THE TROOPS Army Sgt. Erik Roberts, 25, was injured in Baghdad in 2006 by a roadside bomb, and his leg required 12 surgeries before supposedly healing, but last year a lifethreatening infection was discovered in the leg. Roberts underwent a 13th surgery that was covered by his private health insurance, but a costly, rigorous antibiotics regimen was subject to a $3,000 co-pay, which Roberts asked the Department of Veterans Affairs to take care of. The agency repeatedly refused, saying Roberts had gone outside the “system” to save his leg. Only when a CNN reporter called the matter to the attention of Sen. Sherrod Brown in March did the agency relent. MTW

RETORTS, continued from page 5 resource and its life-giving properties. It is often said that the environment is the economy and that health is our only real wealth. Yet our current economic practices are eroding ecosystems both locally and globally, while continuing to cater to the golden calves of tourism, real estate development and construction. A great national debate is underway over finding cures for our ailing health care system. Congress endures persistent lobbying efforts from HMOs and pharmaceutical corporations heavily invested in treatment of disease, with barely a thought to prevention and nutrition. Family farms, once the backbone of America, are now an endangered

for

species, as corporate agri-business rules our food supply, abetted by government subsidies. According to YES! magazine research, two companies sell 58 percent of all seed corn and corporations produce 98 percent of all poultry in the U.S. Over the past eight years, the amount of genetically modified corn grown in the U.S. has increased from 25 to 80 percent. GMO soybeans have soared from 54 to 92 percent over the same period. Shockingly, iceberg lettuce, frozen and fried potatoes, chips and canned tomatoes make up almost half of U.S. vegetable consumption. Not surprisingly, two-thirds of adult Americans are overweight or obese. But it’s not just the people that are unhealthy— widespread herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer usage has poisoned our once-healthy agricultural lands and water supplies.

n the Maui microcosm, the picture is much the same. Plantation agriculture of sugar contributes to environmental degradation through burning, spraying, topsoil loss and coal burning emissions from the Puunene Sugar Mill. Hundreds of acres are leased to Monsanto’s GMO seed production for Mainland farm operations. Yet Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar and parent company Alexander & Baldwin seem to resist bona fide changes to support local food or energy production. Amidst contested case hearings with the State Commission for Water Resource Management, they claim that any reduction in the vast amounts of water they use for irrigation or processing will jeopardize their viability. They, too, know that water is connected with wealth.

I

The good news is that there are ways to reconnect people with the real wealth of food, goods and services produced locally. The current issue of YES!, “Food For Everyone,” offers a cornucopia of good ideas. Articles include: “Top 4 ways the Farm Bill should change to a Food Bill”; “How a community-based food system works”; “8 ways to join the local food movement”; and “The Good Food Revolution,” which includes accounts of sustainable food efforts on Kauai and in Kipahulu, Maui. Those who contend that local farming can’t compete with imported foods are looking through lenses tinted by the limitations of the current economic system. It is time to invest in the broad possibilities inherent in a homegrown economy, and to plant seeds now for a bountiful harvest to come. MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29 Is anyone else slightly unnerved by those thermal scanners they’ve been using in some airports to identify people with high temperatures who might be carrying (cue menacing music) the dreaded swine flu? I’ve long since dispensed with the delusion that I have even a microscopic level of privacy when boarding a plane (or at any other time, for that matter) but something about this bit of invasiveness gives me the Orwellian willies. Plus, as some reports have noted, there are many non-swine flu-related reasons someone might have a high temperature at the airport, including jogging to catch a flight or tipping back a couple pre-takeoff cocktails (or both). So we have yet another empty gesture aimed at giving passengers the illusion of security. Don’t worry folks—walk through this scanner, then that one, OK take

the car keys out of your pocket and do it again, now slip off your shoes and jump up and down on one foot and rub your tummy and pat your head and open your laptop while whistling “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and everything’s gonna be fine.

THURSDAY, APRIL 30 Interesting development in the Joe Bertram brouhaha, with Republicans unexpectedly pulling the plug on an attack campaign. According to a report in today’s Maui News, the GOP decided to halt a TV spot and a series of automated calls lambasting the Maui representative for supporting a friend who pleaded guilty to soliciting a 14-year-old girl (who turned out to be an undercover cop) online. No reason for the sudden aboutface was given, though state Republican Party Chair Willes Lee made clear it’s not because Bertram has suddenly been forgiven. More likely Repubs—particularly Gov. Lingle—are looking to soothe acrimony as the legislative session limps toward the finish line and are saving the “he supports sex offenders!” bullet for when Bertram’s seat comes up in 2010. Attack ads, sadly, are evergreen (just ask Michael Dukakis).

FRIDAY, MAY 1 I’ve had several readers (and co-workers) ask me to mention that Pacific Radio Group’s X92.5 has switched formats from modern rock to island sounds. That leaves Maui rock fans with one less option on the dial, and they had precious few to begin with. I’m not interested in starting some kind of musical culture war, but it does seem odd for a station to replace a rare commodity with something that’s considerably easier to find. Of course, the counter-argument is: who listens to terrestrial radio anymore? (Note: As someone who regularly samples the FM soup while driving, I don’t completely buy the whole “radio is dead” thing. Wounded and fragmented, yes, but not dead.)

SATURDAY, MAY 2

SUNDAY, MAY 3 I’ve never understood why the phrase “community college” carries a stigma. Both words are fine by themselves, but put them together and suddenly it’s, “Oh, you go to a community college.” I bring this up because of a recent Pacific Business News report about how MCC wants to lose the “CC” and become the University of Hawaii Maui College. Guess when it comes to naming schools, the more cumbersome and redundant the better.

MONDAY, MAY 4 The submarines are coming! The submarines are coming! Don’t worry though—they’re ours. (As in, we paid for them.) According to a report in today’s Honolulu Advertiser, the Navy is in the process of shifting 60 percent of its attack subs to the Pacific. By year’s end, Pearl Harbor will have 18 subs, including the USS Jacksonville, which rolled in (or, I guess, bobbed in) this week to much fanfare. I don’t have the space to get into a lengthy examination of runaway military spending or the harm submarines can do to whales and other marine life—and neither, apparently, does the Advertiser. In a piece that’s more than 1,000 words long and contains seemingly superfluous details like how the soldiers on the Jacksonville were happy to be in warm water and “two-thirds of [the] crew is single,” not one sentence is given to a dissenting voice from either the anti-war or environmental community. But there is this: “Gov. Linda Lingle, who was the ‘sponsor’ of the submarine and took part in its commissioning, will present a state flag for the vessel to fly as it enters Pearl Harbor.” Yay.

TUESDAY, MAY 5 Several sources sent me a link to some video mash-ups dedicated to the six senators who voted to bring the civil union bill to the floor for a full vote last month. Their words still resonate. Like this line from Maui’s own Sen. Roz Baker: “It is

Unforgiven. because I believe in the process that I stand in support of this measure. In my view it is simply the right thing to do.” (You can watch the videos and get more info at civilunionshawaii.com.) As for the status of the bill, though a petition drive imploring the legislature to reconsider HB444 is active as of this writing, with lawmakers about to call it quits it seems unlikely we’ll see movement in the near future... In other news: Legendary Hawaiian musician William “Bunny” Brown passed away on the Big Island last week at age 90. Quoted in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Brown’s son and bandmate Elson “Bobo” Brown remembered his father as a man who made “music for the people,” something that’s rarer than it should be. MTW

“Mischievous, marvelous, magical Maui/hero of this land/the one, the only, the ultimate Hawaiian Supaman.” - Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo‘ole t was, in many ways, a typical Maui evening. The sun had slipped behind the West Maui Mountains and the first stars had begun to poke their twinkling faces through the sky’s deep purple veneer, competing for attention with the moon’s pale yellow glow. Though a slight chill said summer was still in hiding, a soft, balmy wind provided comfort for the crowd assembled on the lawn of Maui Community College. But there was more in the air than heavenly bodies and a tropical breeze. There was a feeling, a presence. Five months after his passing, Henry “Uncle Boy” Kana‘e—the larger-than-life pastor and KPOA radio personality affectionately known as “da Maui Hawaiian Supaman”—is still very much alive. The event was ostensibly a drive-in movie put on by MauiFEST Hawaii, the five-year-old organization Kana‘e founded with friend and business partner Ken Martinez Burgmaier. And there were all the trappings of a regular MauiFEST show: cars loaded with blankets and keiki; Alexander’s Fish & Chips, brownies and shave ice for sale; a small stage where local favorites like George Kahumoku dispensed pleasing island sounds. But there was another element, easy to miss, that set the gathering apart: a small, detailed wood carving featuring the visage of Uncle Boy, fitted on a post beneath the giant movie screen. Before the films began, a collection of Kana‘e’s friends and family congregated around the memorial placard to offer a blessing. “Keep the love, that’s one thing Boy always told me,” said Martinez Burgmaier, trying in vain to hold back tears. “We talked every day—laughing, joking. We hit obstacles, but I would always hear those words, ‘If it’s not going right, take it to the left.’ Take it to your heart. That’s something we should all learn from Boy—it always works.” Boy’s mother, Yvonne, stood beside Martinez Burgmaier, leaning on her kin for support. Moments before the blessing, seated in a minivan surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Yvonne reflected on her son. “I do miss him very much,” she said, her eyes misty but her voice steady. “I miss hearing him on the radio. He used to call me up and sing that song, ‘Funny Face.’ I miss that, but it’s OK.” Injecting a bit of levity was Kana‘e’s brother, Clayton, who joked that his mother had “one boy, me, and the rest were daughters,” a gentle jab Boy no doubt would have appreciated considering one of his favorite aphorisms: “Smile—not going broke your face.” Musician Benny Uyetake praised Boy as a steadfast supporter of local talent. “One of greatest things that ever happened to me was when I had my first record out, and Boy was the first one to play it,” he said. “He called me in [to his radio show] every weekend, to interview me and to make sure I had success.” Uyetake said Boy’s absence left him with “an empty feeling,” but added that “at the same time it’s a wonderful thing, because we know he’s around us, that he’s there continuing to shine a light on us in a bigger and broader scale.” Continued Uyetake: “He wasn’t just a great Hawaiian, he was a great lover of God and a great lover of people. I’m proud to say I know him.” After the ceremony, the screen was filled with a slide show set to the Iz song from which Kana‘e drew his nickname. The images were poignant: Boy

strumming an ukulele, administering a wedding, flashing his trademark shaka and grin and, finally, getting married himself as a slender, clean-cut young man in uniform. During his time in the Army Kana‘e traveled extensively and learned to speak multiple languages, an example of the layered personality that allowed him to be, as Martinez Burgmaier put it, “an ambassador of aloha.” As the light disappeared and darkness enveloped the slopes of Haleakala, people huddled under blankets to enjoy the rest of the evening’s entertainment. But the presence of Boy and the diverse ohana he touched remained, flickering like a flame that grows stronger as it burns. ONO KINEGRINDS

BY HEATHER NICHOLSON HEATHER@MAUITIME.COM

Brunch time Treat Mom to one of these island-spanning Mother’s Day feasts he puréed berries are delicate enough to give Merriman’s Strawberry Mimosa some sweetness without weakening the bubbly sparkling wine. It wouldn’t be brunch if I skipped the traditional mimosa, and this tasty twist on a classic brunch item is just a precursor for the restaurant’s special holiday menu.

while the Loco Moco passes on the beef patty in favor of a Southern-style chicken-fried steak. Still reeling from my sweet berry high, I ordered the Brioche, which is French toast stuffed with ricotta and goat cheese and strawberry puree topped with a mango, papaya and strawberry compote. Eating the three hefty pieces of toast reminded me of a good ol’

There’s no better way to say, “Thanks for deciding to have kids,” than buying her a meal complete with cocktails before noon.

The Maui Beach Hotel at 170 Kaahumanu Ave. in Kahului is serving brunch and dinner for Maui matriarchs. Brunch is from 10am to noon for $33 per person, while dinner is served from 5:30 to 8:30pm for $36 per person. Each setting boasts a salad bar, seafood display and entrée course of either seafood or chicken. For reservations, call 808-877-0051. Finally, for a stylish Mother’s Day, consider the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel’s champagne brunch and fashion show. From 8am to 1pm, the West side hotel offers Hawaiian music, hula dancers, designer fashions and an all-you-can-eat buffet with more than 70 food items and free-flowing champagne. At $46.95 per person, Mom can stuff herself and buy clothes. For reservations, call 808-661-0011. MTW

fashioned grilled cheese sandwich—piping hot cheese oozing out of two pieces of fluffy, buttery bread—except the brunch version is much sweeter. Expect to spend about $30 to $40 per person depending on alcohol consumption, which is a pretty good deal compared to the pricier dinner menu. For reservations, call Merriman’s in Kapalua at 808-669-6400. Of course, Merriman’s isn’t your only Mom’s Day option; several restaurants across the island will be serving special Mother’s Day menus this weekend. There’s no better way to say, “Thanks for deciding to have kids,” than treating her to a meal complete with cocktails before noon.

I chose Chef Peter Merriman’s restaurant in Kapalua for Easter brunch but was excited to learn it will offer the same appetizing menu on May 10 for Mother’s Day. The partially open-air Merriman’s is an upscale eatery at the site of the former Bay Club offering stunning views of the ocean from its main dining room, and a bar on the lower level extending out onto the rocks. The menu features about 12 dishes that appear traditional at first glance—Brioche French Toast, Eggs Benedict, Loco Moco. However, a creative twist is added to each item. The Eggs Benedict, for example, come with Kaluastyle lamb instead of ham,

Cost is $34.95 per person. For reservations, call 808-249-2544. The beautiful Grand Wailea Resort is serving Mother’s Day brunch in the grand dining room from 9am to 2:30pm. For $79 per person, you and Mom can gorge on donuts, bear claws and muffins before diving into the various entrees that include veal, chicken, salmon, shrimp and crab, as well as a dessert buffet in case your sweet tooth hasn’t been satiated. It’s that time again—time to cast your votes otes for our annual Best of Maui. We know for many of you this will mean temporarily getting out of the water, which is a lot to ask. To help ease the harsh transition from warm ocean to dry land, we’ve given this year’s BOM an aquatic theme. We know it’s not as good as the real thing, but we hope it helps.

A few notes about BALLOT STUFFING: While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attemptt to stuff the bal ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules: Only one (1) ballot per person All ballots must be signed No photocopied ballots will be accepted Multiple ballots in the same handwriting will not be accepted Ballots must be mailed in; no more than three (3) ballots per envelope Each online ballot must be accompanied by a unique, valid e-mail address ess

As usual, categories are organized into five sections: arts & entertainment; food & drink; goods & services; politics & environment; and sports & leisure. We’ve added a few new categories this year to spice things up, but you’ll still find all the old standbys. Please vote in at least 40 categories if you want your ballot to be counted. Voting ends May 20.

Any ballots that violate these rules—or that sufficiently rouse our suspicion— will not be tallied. We hope it isn’t necessary, but if anyone nyone does attempt to unfairly sway the outcome, we reserve the right to create reate a Best Ballot Stuffer category. This is not something you want to win—trust ust us.

So go ahead, dive in. The water’s fine…

Get Pac Youthful reggae outfit doesn’t lack chops —or inspiration hey occupied the small stage with an air of humility and reverence. Most of the members of heavily R&B-influenced reggae outfit Pac Vibe seemed unusually young to be playing at a bar on Lower Main in Wailuku. In fact, bass player and super-versatile vocalist Josh Tatofi, 17, had to have his dad (Tiva of the highly influential Kapena) sign a form so the he could legally play the gig. Yet despite it’s youth, the band

T

Pac Vibe Next gigs: Friday, May 8, 9pm at Greenleaf Sports Bar, Wailuku; Saturday, May 9, 9pm at Oceans, Kihei; Tuesday, May 12, 9pm at Watercrest, Wailuku

has chops. The fact that they have support from a few of Hawaii’s musical heavyweights—Tiva and his brother, John, who has worked with the likes of Fiji, BET and Gomega— doesn’t hurt. Pac Vibe got together only very recently, but everyone on stage has spent a lifetime playing. Their apparent comfort playing in this configuration is probably a result of their being

members of a large musical family, one that got its first taste of musical performance in a church choir (all of Pac Vibe’s players belong to the Free Church of Tonga). Tiva, who offers his charisma and impressive vocals on a few tunes during the band’s set, says that his family moved to Honolulu from Tonga in the late ’70s. He, his brother Teimoni and Kelly De Lima formed Kapena shortly thereafter. After representing Kaimuki High School in the state “Brown Bags to Stardom” competition, they went on to win a number of Na Hoku Hanohano awards, playing across the globe (South America, New Zealand, the Mainland, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa) and sharing the stage with the likes of blues legend B.B. King and classic reggae outfit UB40. Tiva says the pinnacle of his musical career was in 2001, when the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra played an arrangement of his composition. Kapena disbanded in the early 2000s, though Tiva says the band gets together for a show now and then (including one this weekend at Oceans in Kihei, where Pac Vibe will open). De Lima still plays on Oahu. Teimoni runs a motel in Tonga. Tiva moved to Maui and had a brief hiatus. But at the nudging of other musicians—and with the help of Pac Vibe—Tiva is back on the scene. While Tiva’s bass guitar and vocals add an electrifying element to the band’s set and entice people to come out of the

woodwork and dance, Pac Vibe, reserved as its members appear, is able to stand on its own. Their set is a blend of originals and covers, with a few Kapena songs thrown in (including “Baby Blue” and “Nobody’s Child”). Memorable originals include “Umbrella,” wherein calypsoinspired young female vocalist Kalisi takes the lead. Like most bands with regular bar gigs they cover reggae standards like Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” and top 40 bludgeons like Sean Kingston’s nauseatingly catchy “Suicidal,” but Pac Vibe seems to enjoy putting their own stamp on even the most well-worn standards. Their version of “Redemption Song,” for example, breaks into a reggae groove after a series of somewhat discordant opening bars; a far cry from the Marley version’s acoustic, lullaby-like feel. They break the

saccharin monotony of “Suicidal” by braiding it with strands of the Ben E. King classic “Stand By Me.” Everyone in the band provides vocals, which can make for some pretty ghostly harmonies, especially on the original tune, “Stranger.” Their musical versatility is apparent, as they’re able to bounce between the Drifters and Bob Marley seamlessly. The ease with which they blend the hook from the heart-wrenching 1959 instrumental classic “Sleepwalker” into one of their original island grooves demonstrates this well. Tiva says one the most important things that compels him to sit in with Pac Vibe is their focus, which tends to shy away from the tired topic of romantic relationships. “The only way I’ll put my hundred percent into a group is if they send positive messages,” he says. FILMCRITIQUE

BY BARRY WURST II BARRY@MAUITIME.COM

Summer movie preview A look at the attractions coming soon to an air-conditioned theater near you he most enjoyable movie season of the year began this month and won’t let up until school starts in late August. This is the time when moviegoers get more bang for their buck with action, laughs and special effects extravaganzas. There are lots of sequels on the horizon—a second Transformers, a Da Vinci Code follow-up, a third Ice Age, another Night at the Museum and a sixth Harry Potter. Here are 10 movies (only two of them part of a series) that look especially promising.

T

greenlit a sequel and the anticipation is huge. Looks like the same kind of smart, fun, character-driven, action-packed dazzler that Iron Man was last year. Unless: It can’t live up to the hype and revive the franchise and winds up like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Best-Case Scenario: Trek TV series DVDs start to sell out nationwide, President Obama includes “boldly go” in his next speech and William Shatner runs for Governor.

TERMINATOR SALVATION (May 21)

STAR TREK (May 8) The Gist: The eleventh Trek adventure, featuring a young cast, portrays the maiden voyage of the Starship Enterprise, with Leonard Nimoy returning as a time-traveling Spock. Why It Could Rock: The early word is phenomenal; the studio has already

The Gist: The fourth film in the Terminator franchise, starring Christian Bale as an adult John Conner. Why It Could Rock: Lots of anticipation. The trailer is awesome, Bale is an acting powerhouse and the Governator is rumored to make a cameo appearance. Unless: Charlie’s Angels director McG was really the wrong guy to make this. Plus, can T2 ever be topped? Best-Case Scenario: It’s better than T3: Rise of the Machines, in which case Bale will be back.

UP (May 29) The Gist: The latest from the wizards at Pixar, a fantasy about an old man and a flying house. Why It Could Rock: Pixar has a virtually unblemished track record, having made one quality classic after

Photos (top to bottom): ‘Public Enemies,’ ‘Up,’ ‘Funny People,’ ‘Terminator Salvation.’

another. Word is that the most dazzling scenes are not in the trailer. Unless: The studio that saved Disney’s animation arm finally stumbles, or the competition from Ben Stiller or those dumb GForce guinea pigs proves too great. Best-Case Scenario: Audiences love it as much as Toy Story, and Monsters Inc., and Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles, and Wall-E, and…

DRAG ME TO HELL (May 29) The Gist: Topical horror film, starring Alison Lohman as a bank executive who has a very, very bad day. Why It Could Rock: Director Sam Raimi is taking a break from Spidey epics to make a return to his Evil Dead days. This is the only decent looking horror movie opening this summer. Unless: It’s cornier than Spider-Man 3. Best-Case Scenario: Audiences love it so much, Raimi decides to do Evil Dead 4.

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (June 12) The Gist: Remake of the 1974 whiteknuckler, a subway hostage thriller. Stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta, directed by Tony Scott. Why It Could Rock: Travolta plays a great villain and Washington has a similar role to his Inside Man character. Scott is an action whiz and previously teamed with Washington on Crimson Tide and Man on Fire. A movie for teens and their parents. Unless: It’s as forgettable as The Manchurian Candidate remake, which also starred Washington. Best-Case Scenario: The Washington/Travolta/Scott triple threat gets audiences on the edge of their seats, and we get Taking of Pelham 123.2.

PUBLIC ENEMIES (July 1) The Gist: A historical thriller about the cat and mouse game between career criminal John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale, again) Why It Could Rock: The unbeatable combo of two of our best actors, under the wing of maverick action director Michael Mann. Could be this decade’s The Untouchables. Unless: It’s as densely plotted and offputting as Mann’s last movie, Miami Vice. The lack of scenes the two stars have

together could disappoint those expecting a 30s-era Face/Off. Best-Case Scenario: The History Channel starts running Dillinger specials on demand.

I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER (July 10) The Gist: A high school nerd utters the title at his graduation speech, then watches his whole world change in one night. Why It Could Rock: It’s based on one of the funniest novels I’ve ever read, written by Larry Doyle, who also penned the screenplay. And Heroes star Hayden Panettiere sure is easy on the eyes. Unless: The book gets watered down and it ends up just another forgettable teen comedy. Best-Case Scenario: It’s as funny as Superbad.

FUNNY PEOPLE (July 31) The Gist: A comedy about comedians, played by Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, written and directed by the reliably hilarious Judd Apatow. Why It Could Rock: Said to be more heartfelt than The 40-Year Old Virgin but as raunchy and fall-down funny. The trailer is promising. Unless: Audiences are fed up with Sandler, following a run of lousy summer movies that many saw but few actually liked. Best-Case Scenario: The serious scenes connect with audiences, who have been put off by Sandler’s previous attempt to mix laughs with drama.

THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE (August 14) The Gist: An artist (Rachel McAdams) falls in love with a man (Eric Bana) who has a condition where he travels through time whenever he finds himself stressed. Why It Could Rock: After months of putting up with dude comedies and explosion-heavy blockbusters, the ladies will want a genuine date movie, and this one looks smart, gripping and ambitious. If it’s better than The Notebook, the guys won’t mind being dragged along to see this repeatedly. Unless: The fact that it was shot years ago and has been sitting on the shelf is a bad sign. Best-Case Scenario: It becomes a chick flick that guys admit to liking. MTW

They are believed to have debuted during the late Cretacious period (76-84 million years ago), an epoch known for a proliferation of duck-billed dinosaurs. With more than 22,000 species, orchidaceae is now the most diverse flowering plant family. The astonishing genetic diversity among orchids makes for some of the most vibrant occurrences of color in nature. Perhaps this is why orchids seem like such an obvious choice for an updated Mother’s Day gift. Like moms, they come in all shapes and sizes, yet they all possess great resilience and unique beauty. This week’s Maui Orchid Society orchid show/sale will surely demonstrate this. All of the MOS orchids that will be on display are cultivated locally by member growers, which means that unlike your run of the mill Mother’s Day bouquet, the blooms did not get flown to the Valley Isle.

Few dance forms are as visually captivating as belly dance, or raqs sharqi. Given that it’s usually paired with Middle Eastern music’s moody, provocative melodies and instrumentation, performances of this mysterious and dazzling dance are absolutely irresistible. This Friday’s bellydance show is especially can’t-miss. Visiting Minnesotabased Middle Eastern musician Khalil Lulu will accompany Maui’s bellydance troupe with his exotic synthesis of Arabic, North African, Turkish, Greek, Persian and Spanish music. Lulu is perhaps best known from his work with Twin Cities-based Middle Eastern rock band The Electric Arab Orchestra. (Check out his recent solo work at myspace.com/lulukeyboards.) The dancers, or course, will deliver their highly tantalizing interpretations, including Layla Katrina’s candle dance and sword dance. Those who haven’t been exposed will doubtless be blown away by the color, movement, radiance and enthusiasm these dancers display. I’d suggest coming early to find a seat, as Marc’s will likely be packed. Free.

They have the money, the connections and the heavy machinery to bulldoze whatever they please. We, on the other hand, have music and beauty on our side. Oh, and a concept of society that doesn’t involve being environmental, social and economic vampires. Those who appreciate natural beauty also tend to embrace good, original music. Those who embrace greed tend to be into Rod Stewart (or a given genre’s Rod Stewart equivalent). This Saturday’s benefit for Save Honolua proves that the environmental movement occupies higher ground than that of the bulldoze-it-all-and-let-the-government-sort-it-out set. California-based songbird Tina Malia, who has Maui roots, headlines the show under a full moon, while a number of talented songwriters provide support. The happening takes place in secluded Honolua Valley, beyond the point where the highway gets narrow. Tickets are limited to around 100. Food will be available and organizers encourage attendees to bring coolers. It’s the kind of event that will remind you why places like Honolua need to stay as they are. A steal at $20.

DAY

It’s no surprise that Mother’s Day originated as a celebration of pacifism. While the original Mother’s Day, first celebrated circa 1870, failed to take root, the holiday has survived for over a century in its current form. Sure, the holiday’s political message has been replaced by a highly commercialized substitute, but what’s important is that moms are being celebrated, and moms are awesome. This weekend, lively local poetess and musician Pat Matsumoto will be sharing the stories of matriarchs from Maui and beyond with her My Mama Monologues. She compiled the stories of children and mothers and based a monologue on each one. The result: a globe-spanning show that bares the many facets—and faces—of motherhood. Matsumoto’s inspiration for this colorful and emotionally charged one-woman show is her own mother, who turns 100 this year. Given Matsumoto’s spunk and ability to display an enormous range of emotions, it’s safe to say that the show will be most electrifying. $20.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) When you’re right, you’re right, right? Not so much. As it turns out, you’re wrong roughly as often as the rest of us, you just admit it less often. Fessing up may be more loathsome than eating a wormy apple, but sticking to your guns long after you realize you made a mistake is far worse—for everyone else, anyway. The next time you slip up, don’t try to cover it up or hide out of sight. Be an adult, and cut things short before they spiral further out of control. It may be embarrassing, but it will save a lot of people time and grief; isn’t that worth a smidgen of your pride?

FIASCO MONDAY MAY 18 10 PM

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Your ability to take things apart and put them back together (frequently better than before) is impressive. However, it’s not universal or infallible. Occasionally you can’t get all the pieces to fit back into place. I hope these failures have taught you to be more cautious when determining what you can productively mess around with, and what’s better left alone. That’s a murky judgment call at best, I know—especially because the most exciting scenarios are those with a bit of risk. However, this week, err on the side of caution; when deciding whether or not to tinker with something, lean towards leaving it be.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Some seeds need a hard frost before they’ll germinate. Certain trees require forest fires to reproduce. In those cases, new life can only emerge from hardship or seeming disaster. You can’t build anything new until the junky old buildings get torn down and the rubble carted away. Think of all that, the next time you suffer or get spattered by shit flying through the fan. Instead of focusing glumly on your misery, or what’s ending, get excited as you contemplate what may now, finally, begin. What will you create, now that there’s space to do so? Freed of limitations, the only thing that’s stopping you now is your own mind.

$20 • 21+

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Saying it ain’t over until the fat lady’s sung isn’t exactly right. She could always return for an encore, or even a comeback tour. It’s probably safe to say that this isn’t over until she keels over dead (and that hasn’t happened yet). In other words, don’t give up. Even if this reads like the final chapter of a book, there’s room for a happy ending epilogue or even a sequel. Acting like this is really the end may add to the delicious drama of it all. Play it up if you want to, but don’t believe it, not even for a second.

SEATTLE’S MOST DANGEROUS BAND

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Imagine how frustrating this scenario would be: you spend hours or days preparing for something, only to have someone swoop in and improvise something more effective and efficient, almost without trying. Now try to remember that the gifted extemporizer is frequently you. You’re usually so busy fixing stuff up that you don’t even notice the resentful vibe from all the people whose hard work you made look sloppy and ridiculous. Tough shit for them, right? Maybe. However, there are times when it would behoove you to just sit back and let things happen on their own, even if that means they fail (or don’t run as smoothly as they could). This week, keep your tinkering to yourself, and let things play out without your involvement.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) This week, tune into the beauty you’ve been missing. You have a tendency to move too fast, and consequently only focus on the loudest or most urgent details vying for your attention. These are all too often negative and ugly, unfortunately, which leads you to the conclusion that the world is a bleak, grim place. It is, in many ways, but even the most dismal places have elements of loveliness. You just need to slow down long enough to actually notice them. This week, don’t let external events determine your pace, especially if it’s too hectic to allow you to appreciate the good stuff.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Right now you’re like a sidewalk tree. You have a cube of soil to occupy, but it’s boxed in by concrete, sewer pipes, and subway tunnels. With nowhere else for your roots to grow, your life and potential is necessarily limited. Forget about breaking through the barriers constraining you; there’s nothing useful on the other side of them. What’s required here is a complete transplant. While traumatic in and of itself, it’s still totally worth it, since you’ll be going from a place you can survive to one where you can thrive. If you haven’t already packed up your roots and hitched a ride to sunnier pastures, think about setting things in motion to do just that. It’s overdue.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Out of ten people trapped in an elevator, three would shut down and just wait for it to be over, one way or another. Three would just plain freak out, potentially making the situation worse. A few could swing either way. Only one or two, though, would have the leadership potential to save the day. They’d refuse to give up, no matter how bleak things looked and no matter how much resistance or scorn they faced. You have the resourcefulness, the charm, and the thick skin to be that obstinate person who never gives up. You know that, right? If you’re not already exemplifying that, this is a great week to begin.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) While I don’t blame you for wanting to eschew the corny chronic earnestness of a couple of the other signs, that doesn’t mean you should abandon sincerity altogether. Whenever things get the least bit sentimental, you usually crack a joke or crank up the sarcasm. That’s fine, most of the time. But there are occasions when you’d be better served by honest vulnerability—all the more powerful coming from someone who doesn’t employ it all that often. File the slightly trite option of simply opening up and sincerely sharing your feelings right next to your more typical responses—it is, after all, just another way to respond to a situation. In some cases, it might be the best one—especially this week.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Opposites may attract, but I hope they’re not the only ones on your radar. You may find a better companion in someone of mostly like mind. Butting heads may generate sparks, but simple harmony could create a far cozier, sexier, and more sustainable warmth for both of you. I might be wrong here—you might never be happy except with someone who constantly challenges you. But I think it’s worth a try. In any case, finding people with whom you have much in common should be far easier than encountering the kind of person you’ve historically been attracted to, so giving my theory a go should be quite easy.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Imagine you were a bird, with built-in instincts compelling you to migrate vast distances to suit the seasons. I don’t think birds spend a whole lot of time questioning this drive. For them, it’s quite simply the “right” thing to do; that is, the thing that’ll enable them (and their progeny) to keep on living. You have similar instincts—in some ways these are better suited to generate happiness and well-being than your rational mind. You almost always know what’s “right;” what often thwarts you is how illogical it seems. Your busy brain says, “that can’t be right.” It is. Ignore your brain and do it anyway.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Just like a Labrador who’ll never tire of fetching the tennis balls, this is a game you’ll never really get sick of. Anyone playing it just to humor you (and secretly hoping you’ll just get it out of your system) is going to end up bitter. Similarly, any chapter where you pretend you’ll be happy living without this particular brand of fun would also come to a semi-tragic conclusion. No, you simply have to find someone who actually and truly wants to play the same game as you. Keep looking until you find that person, because nothing else will really do.
