LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR ROLLING WITH THE PUNCHES (Editor’s note: at press time, we received 32 online comments to our May 1, 2008 story “Roller Derby!” Here’s a small sampling of them.) Great reporting, thank you for writing and publishing this important story. It saddens me that in the year 2008 prejudices against positive, strong women—especially women in sports—still exist. Please tell me how anyone would build a separate roller rink devoted to the Maui women’s roller derby, if the current rink won’t even let them practice in it? That sounds like a swift dodge to pass the buck to absolutely no one. I hope the Maui Roller Girls stay strong in the face of these inexcusable, shameful shenanigans. ROLL ON! -Jenny R. WRITE ON, INDEED (Editor’s note: The following letter references the story “Plantation Politics,” April 17, 2008) This is what I call great insight on why things are the way they are on Maui. When I saw the pic and read the headline I really thought this would be a lame article and junk issue, boy was I wrong on both accounts! There were a lot of good stories in this issue. This particular article is indicative of how “Chief of Recreation” Floyd Miyazono does things in the county. This man has no formal nor practical education as far as recreation goes and he has held Maui County back from forward movement with his lack of leadership in allowing things like this to go on throughout the county’s recreation department. This situation should have been dealt with swiftly and fairly some-

I find it unbelievable that what I thought to be a reputable paper, the Maui Time Weekly, would publish such a one-sided article and put absolutely no effort whatsoever into checking the true facts. This article is a joke and attempts to tarnish the incredible upstanding relationship Maui Inline Hockey has with the Community and the County of Maui. I find it absolutely disgusting how such an uninformed ignorant selfish group of individuals would have the nerve to do this to an organization that prides itself on providing a safe, fun, and organized place for the children of the community. This group of individuals should be ashamed of themselves. -“Hockey Dad,” via Mauitime.com
one should step in and give these ladies some time on the rink and stop being rude. They are willing to pay the “expensive insurance.” The county seriously needs to remember the taxpayers are in essence their bosses. -Herman Miranda, via Mauitime.com

Big on Bamboo
‘I am Resigning my Position’
This could be the crop of Maui’s future utside my Haiku window is a stand of golden bamboo, catching the morning sunlight and swaying in the trade winds. From time to time I have selectively cut a few pieces of different sizes for a variety of purposes: fruit picker, coconut harvesting long-handled saw, curtain rods, garden plant stakes, and to hoist decorative flags. On a recent trip to Bali, I noticed bamboo used for construction scaffolding, framing, railings, furniture, fences, flooring, ladders and more. I saw an entire shade house covering an acre of organic vegetables constructed entirely with bamboo. So why not grow this versatile crop on Maui? While it grows here vigorously, and even invasively in many locations, it does not enjoy the wide array of uses that make it one of the world’s most useful resources. At least, not yet. Within the next year, a Kipahulu grower will begin to harvest two-inch to three-inch diameter poles of bamboo, among more than 40 varieties planted over the past several years. Rich von Wellsheim of Whispering Winds Bamboo already has achieved a measure of success with nursery sales of bamboo varietals. Beyond that, he envisions a “culture of bamboo” with opportunities to provide food, shelter, protect our soils and watersheds and add more jobs to our local economy.
O
n a time when many conversations are turning to self-sufficiency, sustainability and revitalizing our economy, growing bamboo seems to outshine the status quo of importing virtually all of our building materials, and more than 90 percent of our food and energy needs. Bamboo is actually a family of plants in the grass family, found in both tropical and temperate climates, and native to all continents except Europe and Antarctica. Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant in the world, with rates of three to four feet a day documented under ideal soil and climate conditions. Mature bamboo, though light weight, has a tensile strength greater than steel, and thus is prized for housing construction, bridges, and even as a substitute for rebar in concrete. Bamboo shoots of many varieties are prized in Asian cooking, though others are bitter or even toxic. It’s also the primary diet of China’s Giant Panda, a docile vegetarian whose numbers have

Can you believe we import $50 million of this stuff yearly?
dwindled from lost habitat in a country that once had 40 percent of its primary forest standing in bamboo. Growing populations in many other countries means that demand can outstrip available resources, leading to over-harvesting. Bamboo is trendy today, and expensive. The United States has a huge trade deficit in bamboo, importing $50 million worth of products yearly. It’s used in durable and attractive flooring, paneling, curtains, musical instruments and even textiles for clothing. As a source for papermaking, bamboo out-yields hardwoods six to one. Von Wellsheim cautions that bamboo can indeed be invasive, but that Whispering Winds cultivates only non-invasive “clumping” varieties. But upon reaching maturity, they will be selectively harvested and are never clear-cut like hardwoods. The long-term plan is for 20 acres of bamboo, including ornamental, edible and timber quality varieties, inter-planted with nitrogen-fixing hardwoods. The 175-acre property, just below the Kipahulu Bioreserve portion of Haleakala National Park, also is the site of 40 acres of tropical hardwoods, planted by the State Division of Forestry and Wildlife, part of the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Another 80 acres will be gradually cleared and restored with native Hawaiian plants. Von Wellsheim also succeeded in gaining acceptance from the Maui Planning Department of his overall farm plan. James T. Viela, the new Maui County Liquor Commissioner who just started his five-year term in March, has resigned. Viela’s letter of resignation is dated April 17— the same day this paper reported his 2005 conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol. “Effective April 17, 2008, I am resigning my position from the Liquor Commission Board, due to personal reasons,” Viela wrote to Liquor Commission Chairman Robert Tanaka. In a phone conversation, Viela— a Wailuku resident who runs an insurance firm and previously spent five years on the LC Board of Adjudication—declined to elaborate on what he meant by “personal reasons,” saying simply that, “I feel it was best for everybody.” But Viela did say the timing of his resignation was due to Maui Time’s reporting on his DUI conviction. “I resigned when your article came out in the paper,” he said. Mayor Tavares’ role in the Viela nomination remains the biggest unanswered question here. According to her letter informing the Maui County Council of the new Liquor Commission vacancy, Tavares didn’t find out about Viela’s resignation until April 23, nearly a week later. Even more troubling, Viela said his 2005 DUI conviction never came up when Tavares nominated him to the Liquor Commission. And why should it have? There’s no question on the two-page commission application form asking if the applicant was ever convicted of a crime. Which points to a serious irony: anyone applying for a liquor license needs to disclose any and all criminal convictions “other than a minor traffic violation,” but those on the Liquor Commission who approve all new licenses do not. That the county has trouble filling board and commission vacancies is an old story—but is the mayor’s office so desperate that they carry out little or no vetting of applicants? Who knows—Maui County Public Information officer Mahina Martin did not return a phone call asking for comment.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD TAX DOLLARS AT WORK A Maryland governmental fund created to assist “innocent” victims of violent crime has paid out nearly $1.8 million since 2003 to injured (or deceased) “drug dealers, violent offenders and other criminals,” according to an investigation by the Baltimore Sun published in March. Burial expenses were awarded for a carjacker, a victim of an inter-gang killing and a sex offender who was fatally beaten in prison. The Maryland courts have ruled that as long as the applicant was not engaged in a crime at the time he was injured, he must be considered for an award.

Experimental “natural orifice” surgery might be health care’s next big thing following its U.S. introduction last year at Columbia University (as reported also in “News of the Weird”), where doctors removed a woman’s diseased gall bladder not by an abdominal incision but through her vagina. In March, doctors at UC-San Diego Medical Center removed a woman’s appendix through her vagina, and a man’s through his mouth. (A microscopic camera must be inserted through the abdomen, however, to guide the surgeons.) Pain and healing time are usually less than half that of ordinary surgery, but the risk of internal infection is greater. The next step, doctors say, will be removing kidneys through the anus.

WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND Thirty years ago, before Wal-Mart became an international giant, a small video company made a “handshake” deal to shoot promotional footage of the firm’s executives and was given free rein within the company. It made 15,000 tapes, including many, inevitably, showing Wal-Mart leaders in awkward situations. In 2006, an incoming WalMart executive decided to end the relationship, devastating Flagler Productions’ bottom line. To compensate, the company began offering to research its library for historians and, more notably, litigants suing Wal-Mart on product safety, employment and unionbusting issues. According to an April Wall Street Journal report, a treasure trove of embarrassing moments is now available.
PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Even though 20 states outlaw keeping monkeys as pets, the Humane Society of the U.S. estimates that there are 15,000 privately owned primates, with at least 200 Floridians licensed for pet capuchins, according to an April Orlando Sentinel report. Since experts warn that the animals are biters and scratchers and are very aggressive when agitated, the Sentinel asked what accounts for their popularity. Said the editor of the magazine Monkey Matters, it’s their humanlike features and owners’ desires to dress them up. “Believe me,” said the editor, “if people could get their cats [into] outfits, a lot of those cats would be wearing outfits.” MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
At least these Wailuku Town parking spaces are safe... for now
FRIDAY, May 2 WEDNESDAY, Apr. 30 And now, for something completely unexpected: Good News! In its infinite wisdom, the county has decided not to get rid of the small gravel lot situated between the Iao Theater and a Maui Police substation on Market Street in Wailuku Town. In the name of almighty beautification, county officials had intended to turn that small but all-day parking lot into a park. But the cries from local business owners and workers—who must not only find parking in the increasingly dense Wailuku Town but also dodge the ticket-writing machine otherwise known as Maui Police Office Keith Taguma—finally became too much for officials to bear. The county will still knock out a few spaces here and there on Market, and has not at all given up on turning the big Wailuku municipal parking lot between Market and Church Streets into a giant parking garage, but for now, the little gravel lot is safe.
THURSDAY, May 1 Well, looks like that whole interisland air cargo crisis is over. Wasn’t that a scary three days? And I was just getting used to the idea of not getting my mail, online purchases or food anymore. Anyway, the Honolulu Advertiser is reporting today that Seattle-based Saltchuk Resources, Inc.—which owns Young Brothers and Hawaiian Tug & Barge—just announced that it’s taking over Aloha Airlines’ airfreight business. I guess this is good, though exactly how many former Aloha workers get their old jobs back is anybody’s guess.
Okay, enough is enough. I know I make a lot of jokes about how this state is run, and the people we elected to run it, but what they’ve gone and done now is so far beyond any semblance of rational government that even I am speechless. “Gov. Linda Lingle on Friday allowed a tax credit bill giving $1 to every Hawaii taxpayer to become law without her signature,” reported Pacific Business News today. Yes, you read that correct: one dollar. In these times of housing troubles, rising fuel prices and general economic uncertainty, the great State of Hawai‘i will refund all us taxpayers 100 pennies. In fairness, Lingle too thought the plan bogus, calling it a “token amount” in the PBN story. But what Lingle should have done was simply veto the bill and stop this whole miserable process. What our state’s residents need right aren’t necessarily tax refunds—a few dollars more or less in our bank accounts isn’t going to make that much of a difference—but real government regulation and transparency on what’s really hurting us now, namely the housing market and oil companies. It might even be worth reexamining the old gas cap law.
SATURDAY, May 3 Of course, the odds of that happening are about as good as the state Ethics Commission coming down hard on Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. (HSF) for it’s astonishingly poor initial public disclosure of its 2007 lobbying efforts, which blogger Ian Lind (ilind.net) discovered and we reported in this space last week. “Dan Mollway, executive director of the commission, yesterday said Superferry would not be punished for the errors because the company cooperated and quickly filed the
amended reports,” reported today’s Honolulu Advertiser. Look at that—no punishment whatsoever! And all because HSF filled at the amended reports so quickly. Remember, if you will, that Hawai‘i Superferry first told the Ethics Commission that in 2007 they spent $21,960 on lobbying, only to “amend” that figure in later reports to a whopping $379,431. Needless to say, Lind—a former Honolulu Star-Bulletin investigative reporter—wasn’t pleased: “Their [HSF’s] public relations consultants and paid lobbyists, I’m sure, are very aware of what the rules are,” he told the Advertiser. “If it wasn’t intentional, it was certainly negligent. The negligence is the damage to the public’s ability to be sure its rights were protected in this whole legislative decisionmaking.” Ahh, the public—glad somebody remembers them. By the way, the Advertiser also reported that “willful violations” of public disclosure laws can bring as much as a $500 fine. Kind of puts everything into perspective, doesn’t it?
SUNDAY, May 4 Speaking of perspective: Man, you people sure have opinions on roller derby. I’m speaking of the (so far) 23 comments at Mauitime.com on our “Roller Derby!” cover story last week. But if you read past the name-calling and gratuitous use of the word “skank,” it’s clear there’s great ignorance afoot. See, the main thrust of our May 1 story was that the skating rink, which is located entirely within Kalama Park in Kihei (a public park) and offers public skating hours, is apparently a private facility run by the Maui Inline Hockey Association. And when reporter Krista Sherer called to determine exactly who calls the shots at the rink, she got a lot of confusing, contradictory answers from people—including public officials—
who really should know better. Yes, the hockey association raised money to get the rink built. That’s great. But the rink is in a public park, which is supposed to be open to all county residents. Be nice if someone in a position of authority could explain what’s going on with this in clear, unambiguous terms.
MONDAY, May 5 In what is probably the 32,oooth case of outsourcing gone mad, our beloved Hawaiian Telcom has hired Pacific Telcom, Inc.—which is based on the island of Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands—to handle directory assistance for the state of Hawai‘i, according to today’s Pacific Business News. Let’s think about this a moment: when someone living here wants to get a local number, he or she picks up the phone and calls 411—and is immediately connected to someone living 3,300 miles away. Oh, and the transfer means the old 411 operator—Metro One—has had to cut loose 50 workers here in Hawai‘i. Did I mention that, according to PBN, the minimum wage on Saipan is $3.55? Or that Hawaiian Telcom is still owned by the incredibly wealthy and politically connected private equity firm Carlyle Group. It was obvious, wasn’t it?

ehbrah@mauitime.com I just want to thank the obnoxious, rude man I saw at the big Wailea resort pool a few weeks ago. If you hadn’t been so loud and arrogant, I never would have seen just how friendly and professional the resort staff could be. You were there for some function put on by a local company, and I was there with my children. I was appalled when you started yelling “I want my bar service now! I want a lounge chair on the grass! I want! I want! I want!” You went on like that forever. The staff tried to tell you that they didn’t allow chairs on the grass and that your bar service would come with everyone else’s, but then you started throwing your weight around, saying you were a big shot with the company putting on the function. Let me tell you something: that company isn’t all that popular on this island right now, so you might want to be careful when you brag about that in the future. As for the resort staff, I’m sorry you have to deal with people like that.

NO POWER MECO drops to the bottom of the chart for last Thursday’s unexplained, completely unnecessary power outage in Wailuku. Seriously, you guys know this is the United States of America, right? What happened, did another bird short out the whole system? Short of a hurricane or tsunami or that one time when Dr. No nearly blew up the world, there’s really no reason why the power should just go out. Maui’s residents pay a great deal every month for the power to be on. That’s all day and all night. Please, guys: can we work on this?

O
ne of my girlfriends is going to have the best Mother’s Day ever. She gets to go to Las Vegas with her mom, sister and sister-in-law for five days. The
best part? No kids. But as she told me the good news, she confessed that she wondered if leaving her keiki behind to celebrate being a mom might, in fact, make her a crappy mother. I don’t think so, and I told her that. She’s a mom every minute of the day for the rest of the year, so why not take a break? The only thing five days off will do is make her a little less crazy and appreciate her darling little Gremlin that much more. Granted, not everyone can get away for a vacation. Money’s tight and airfare just went way up. But what you can do is book a mini-getaway for Mom without having to starve your own kids to pay for it. See, we’re already cruising one of the most lusted-over places on the planet. Not to mention, we have some of the greatest spas and innovative treatments available to us. We’re highlighting some of the best below, as well as finding out what some of the spa employees will be doing for their moms. So get that credit card ready and prepare to pay–she did, after all, carry you in her womb for nine months–so your poor mother can finally relax.
Honua Spa, Hotel Hana Maui
Maui Body and Soul This is a great one-stop-shop for everything and anything that you need to help Mom relax. Naturally, they offer all the good spa stuff like a Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, but what really sets them apart is their floatation tank. What’s a floatation tank? It’s a sensory deprivation chamber that you float in to ease your muscles and your mind, of course. Floatation tanks are great for all kinds of things besides just chilling out. For example, Mom can take a CD with her–foreign language anyone?–and the state that the tank puts her in is supposed to help the learning process.
Hana, in itself, is one of the most relaxing places on Earth. So when you add a trip to the spa over at Hotel Hana Maui–which has been voted into the top 25 Hotel Spas of Hawai‘i by Travel + Leisure–you get indescribable bliss. The massages there are supposed to be phenomenal and the hot stone–lomi pohaku–comes highly recommended. Instead of just laying the warm stones on Mom’s body, the masseuse actually uses the stones to rub and massage her tired muscles. They also offer fancy body scrubs, wraps and facials like the Hawaiian Ginger Body Scrub and Honua Wrap, which starts with a fragrant body scrub using Hawaiian Ginger and ends with a super-hydrating Honua Wrap. The Honua Spa is one of three places on the island that has a watsu pool that is used for aquatic renewal. The water in the pool is kept at a comfortable 98 degrees and floats are placed on Mom’s neck, hands and feet. A therapist then does gentle cranial sacral work while Mom drifts off to the underwater music. How cool is that?
Pukanala Baybayan, Spa Concierge: “I would get Mom a body treatment. Probably the hot stone massage or the Awa Spirulina scrub which is detoxifying and exfoliating.” Hotel Hana Maui, Hana, 248-8211
Aida Figueroa, Manager: “Spa treatment or a gift certificate for a massage is always good.”
Azeka Shopping Center, Kihei, 875-9004
Soleil Luna, A Boutique Salon & Spa In one word, Soleil Luna is hip. Lots of fashionable Balinese décor and eclectic music add to the ambiance. This is a great place for the Mom that gets mistaken as your sister or for the woman who appreciates animal print. The staff are all highly trained and spend time traveling the world keeping up on the latest trends, products and services so that you can sit back, relax and be completely assured that you will get nothing but the best from your time spent with them. They offer all kinds of stuff like facials, manicures, pedicures, body polishes, waxing, massage and salon packages for those of you that want to get Mom a little bit of everything.
April Page, General Manager: “If I could get my mom anything, it would be a plane ticket to come visit me!” 242 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 662-0203

Green Ti Boutique & Massage I really like Green Ti because it’s located really close to my office. And judging from the overcrowded parking lot, it’s close to a hell of a lot of other Mom’s jobs too. The vibe in the boutique is very chill and the place just smells really good. Mainly they offer massage and acupuncture, but they also do Reiki, an awesome, non-invasive, very gentle form of energy balancing done by a trained practitioner who lays hands on your body. Besides their services, they sell a bunch of cool stuff like bath and body products, handmade jewelry, products from the lavender farm and eye pillows. You can’t go wrong.
Erica Oleksa, Receptionist: “I’d get a deep tissue massage because it’s just a nice treat to help relax tired moms.” 40 N. Market St., Wailuku, 242-8788
Spa Grande, Grand Wailea Resort Hands down, this is my favorite place in the whole world. I’ve only been to the spa once and am still paying for it, but man, was it worth every penny. And it costs a lot of pennies. Guess what? Your mother–she who carried you in her womb, birthed you and then supported your ass until you were at least 18–totally deserves it. Each treatment starts off with “Terme Wailea Hydro Therapy” which is just a fancy name for hot tubs and luxurious baths. I am in love with the furo, Roman Jacuzzi, waterfall, cold plunge pool, eucalyptus steam and redwood sauna, aromatic baths and even the Swiss jet shower, though the later really tickles. I’ve experienced one of their body wraps and it’s absolutely amazing. You get all slathered up and then cocooned in warm fuzzy stuff and then wrapped in space age material. It sounds weird, but trust me it’s totally heavenly.
Christina Yumul, Public Relations : “We have two great Mother’s Day promotions to choose from. The Mother’s Day Escape Package, which includes a onenight luxury, ocean view accommodation and a day of pampering at Spa Grande and also a $300 gift certificate to Spa Grande that comes with a luxurious robe.”
Spa Luna Spa Luna began in Makawao but found its home in Haiku at the Haiku Cannery. Today, they put a lot of focus on their esthetician and massage school, but still have an absolutely fantastic Day Spa that’s bound to have something Mom will love. Some of the services that they offer are body wraps, facials, Italian body toning, massage, sauna, skincare, tinting (eyebrows, eyelashes), waxing (everything that you could imagine), and lymphatic drainage. While the words “lymphatic drainage” don’t sound especially soothing, it’s reported benefits do, like an improved metabolism, eliminated waste and toxins and a boost to the immune system. Every mom could use one of those.
Fern Findeisen, Office Manager: “For Mom? Definitely a facial with a pumpkin peel and a body wrap.”
810 Haiku Rd. Ste. 209, 575-9267
3850 Wailea Alanui Dr., 875-1234
Blue Bamboo I’ve been to Blue Bamboo a few times when it was still in Wailuku–where it had been for six years–and loved it. Lucky for Lahaina people, it relocated to the Westside about a year ago. This is a Japanese-styled wellness center that offers both massage and acupuncture as well as spa-type therapies. The ambiance is very soothing, yet not at all pretentious. It’s serene and you are never made to feel like a gigantic, noisy jerk even if you accidentally make a loud noise. The spa room has a furo soak tub and offers light therapy that, according to those who use it, balances the body system. Not to mention, Blue Bamboo II is committed to offering extremely good prices on all of their services which means that there’s really no good excuse not to treat mom to an afternoon or evening of relaxation.
Elizabeth Homan, receptionist: “If I had a choice for Mother’s Day, I would recommend a gift certificate or an 80-minute deep tissue massage. Mom’s will be extremely well taken care of here and will feel it the minute they walk in the door.”

ONO KINEGRINDS
Wok Star Noodles never tasted so good About two months ago, a curious rumor apparently circulated through Kihei that the soon-to-open noodle house Wok Star was a multinational operation backed by big money. In truth, Wok Star, the tiny little café in Kihei Kalama Village, is clean, professional, efficient and delicious, but also as independently owned and operated as they come.
Wok Star

Wok Star is in the old Café James spot next to Life’s a Beach. While that operation ultimately failed in less than a year trying to compete with enormously popular Kihei Café less than a block away, Wok Star already seems to have found a niche serving eclectic Asian food from the early morning to midnight. As you walk across the bamboolined patio and into the café itself— just a kitchen and counter floating wrapped in soft blue and black trim— it’s easy to see how some interpreted the hard work of owners Sarah Gray and Mark Musante as having international support. Ultimately, both Wok Star’s ambience and food are pretty simple, but the efforts of Gray and Musante pay off so well everything seems intricate and delicate. Wok Star is, quite simply, a noodle house. The prices are low but the quality of the food—which samples from all over Asia—is high. I found this out when I ordered their Maui Fried Rice: a heaping bowl of jasmine rice with onion, pineapple chunks (not little cubes—chunks), celery, carrots, scrambled egg and bacon, all topped with bean sprouts. “There’s bacon in this!” I told Gray while quickly shoveling spoonfuls into my mouth. “Yes,” she said. “It’s supposed to have bacon.” The operative phrase there is “supposed to.” I’ve eaten a lot of fried rice, but the idea of dropping actual bacon shavings into the rice was new to me. Everything on the menu is like that, even though no item is more than

$10. The Thai Red Curry has steamed vegetables that have simmered in coconut milk and red curry and jasmine rice— adding shrimp, which adds $4 to the dish, is a very wise idea. The Indo Peanut Stir-Fri—a bowl of spinach, broccoli, sweet onions, bell peppers, egg noodles, cilantro and bean sprouts, all doused in a “special” Indonesian peanut sauce—is an unusual treat. Even something like the Teriyaki Udon, which is basically just egg noodles, broccoli, shitake mushrooms, onions and ginger in a plum teriyaki sauce, is exceptional, especially when topped with sliced beef ($3) and a few squirts of Sriracha. On a recent visit, I saw one table order at least four servings of potstickers. This isn’t a mystery, once you taste the little fried appetizers, which come with chicken, shoyu vinaigrette and sweet Thai chili aioli. But perhaps the tastiest surprise on the menu are the Jaffels—pressed sandwiches with a variety of fillings. Think of them as a poor man’s panini, though pressed in a dedicated Jaffel iron, which sears the sandwich’s edges. The one with scrambled eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, green onion and Maui crunch wheat bread makes a good breakfast, but the best by far is the Banana Jaffel, with peanut butter, sliced bananas and honey on Hawaiian sweetbread. Cut into triangles and dusted with powdered sugar, this Jaffel even rivals Wok Star’s Banana Lumpia dessert when it comes time for something sweet.

Overhaulin’ Maui Style Thursday, May 8 at 8 p.m. at Tiffany’s, Wailuku [EVENT/TELEVISION] In September, Derek Pace and his team from Maui’s very own Certified Sounds (Alvin Fernandez, Brad Kim, Joshua Espinueva and–Mr. Restless Native himself–Jesse Begley) hopped a big jet plane over to California to shoot “Wake-Up Call,” season five’s third episode of TLC’s popular show Overhaulin’, which stars the legendary Chip Foose. Not to embarrass the folks at Certified Sounds or anything, but when it comes to stereo installation and custom fabrication, they tend to be legendary themselves. Besides being the home to Hawai`i’s only MECP Certified Master Installer, over the years they’ve won a bunch of carshow competitions and their work has been featured in several national industry magazines. While in California, they pimped out a 1963 Chevy Nova for a young man in the process of restoring it with his father, who suddenly passed away in an accident. The end result? Tune in and see for yourself this Thursday at 8 p.m. on TLC. Better yet, party and talk story with the crew as they watch the episode at Tiffany’s in Wailuku. Seabury Hall Craft Fair
80’s Café
Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Seabury Hall, Makawao
Saturday, May 10 at 9 p.m. at Giovanni’s, Ka`anapali
[EVENT] The title kind of says it all. I’ve been going to the Seabury Hall Craft Fair religiously for over 20 years. Every year it’s gotten bigger and better. This year it will have all of the good stuff that the community has come to expect: fantastic food, silent auction, rummage sale, fresh cut flowers, art, produce, crafters and tons of fun games and activities–can you say waterslide and pony rides? Plus, the Seabury Hall campus is just plain gorgeous and the craft fair is an excellent way to spend a Maui spring day with the family. I’m going this year with my mom and daughter. My husband and son will stay home, not by choice, but just because they’re stinky boys. I just hope nobody tells them about the great Classic Car Show that they’ll miss out on, or the Kawasaki Golf Shootout. Admission: $3 for adults. Kids 12 and under free. For more info visit www.seaburyhall.org.
[EVENT] Okay, so the 1980’s had some really embarrassing fashions, but it also brought us Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Justin Timberlake. I can totally look past shoulder pads and geometric neon shirts—hell I’ll even look past Lindsey Lohan—if we can keep the good stuff from the ‘80s. This Saturday, Elements Entertainment is bringing us the 80’s Café, which is full of 80’s music courtesy of DJs Boomshot, JP and Del Sol. There will be prizes for best ‘80s garb so go buy some Aquanet and flip those bangs. For more info email kenui_e2@yahoo.com.

Wednesday, May 14 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Castle Theater, MACC, Kahului
[MUSIC] What’s with all this amazing music coming out of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center over the past few months? On Monday, the talented Boz Scaggs will take the stage. There’s not much I can say about Scaggs except that I grew up listening to his music, my parents are big fans and we’ve loved each and every one of his albums, especially Middle Man and Slow Dancer. Silk Degrees was pretty awesome, too. And I can’t forget about his latest release Fade into the Light. Yeah, they’re pretty much all fantastic. Tickets: $85, $75, $65, $55. For more information www.mauiarts.org. For tickets 242-7469.
[FILM] While researching this film, I got all choked up and shed a few tears while watching the trailer. Yes, the trailer. See, Blindsight is an award-winning documentary about a group of young Tibetans who climb Mt. Everest under the leadership of world-renowned climber Erik Weihenmayer. The catch? Both the group of teenagers and Weinhenmayer are blind. That’s right—they can’t see, even though 20 percent of those with sight who attempt to climb Everest die. This film has gotten amazing reviews and is supposed to change the way you think about life. I believe it. Tickets: $12. Ticket specials are available online. For more information and to view the trailer yourself, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com.

Fastest Movie Ever Made The Wachowskis make summer family fun In Speed Racer the Wachowski Brothers achieve a divine vision of psychedelic visual ecstasy—you won’t believe the sheer amount of color on the screen at any given time—while digging deep into a campy tone that speaks to audiences of all ages. Emile Hirsch leads a flawless cast as the title character who carries the death of his car-racing brother Rex Racer (Scott Porter) as a constant inspiration to win races for his family’s racing business. Anti-corporate themes abound as the sport’s predatory company, Royalton Industries, tries to bring Speed and his family to the dark side of greed. Far-out racing sequences, ninja attacks and a budding romance between Speed and his girlfriend Trixie (perfectly played by Christina Ricci) attend the trippy visual fun. Like a revved-up turbo mix of Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy with Disney’s Tron, Speed Racer is a blast from start to finish. Since ending their Matrix trilogy with a whimper rather than its antici-

pated bang, the Wachowski Brothers have successfully turned their attention to uniting cartoon logic with live-action appeal. The pay-off is immediate and non-stop. Fans of Tatsuo Yoshida’s 1960’s anime cartoon series (originally entitled Mach GoGoGo) get plenty of positive reinforcement with key story elements, like the functional “A” through “G” buttons on the steering wheel of Speed’s car—the “Mach 5”—and his little brother Spritle’s pet monkey Chim-Chim. The filmmakers are careful to emphasize Spritle (well played by cherubic Paulie Litt) for his humorous
kid qualities of loving candy and constantly trying to prove himself as worthy of adult respect.

The diabolical Royalton (exquisitely played by Roger Allam—The Queen) introduces himself to the Racer family as an effeminate pancake-loving family man who just wants to provide them with the riches they deserve. But when Royalton gets Speed alone in his office to sign a contract piled high across his desk, we learn the depth of his corporate villainy. Speed Racer balances nicely between its dastardly dangerous car race rallies and the nefarious intrigue that surrounds them. A low-fi animated introduction sequence gets us inside the mind of young Speed daydreaming in class about racing with his brother, and doodling car crashes in the pages of his notebook. It’s impossible not to be transported to the joys of childhood when all that mattered was how far your imagination could take you away from the mundane realities of homework, chores, and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. If Speed is a rebel with a one-track mind, it’s an ethic of independence that he consciously inhabits with his family’s allied approval. The movie’s greatest achievement lies in its embrace of representing modern family entertainment in a broad yet boiled-down spectrum of soup to nuts humor, action and unbridled celebration. You can find touches of inspiration drawn from everything from The Three Stooges to Jerry Lewis comedies to Peewee Herman. The audience is happily encouraged to laugh at characters, with characters and at themselves for being so easily led. MTW

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) It’s said that you can never go home again. Obviously, unless your hometown was destroyed in a fire, you can go home again. What’s virtually impossible to capture is the feeling you had when you actually lived there. This week, however, you could come close, if you wanted to. You could infuse some of the most positive aspects of that chapter of your existence, reasonably permanently, into your current one. Maybe you’ll jump at the chance, or maybe you’ll realize that what you’ve created is actually better than what you had, once the nostalgic blur of romanticized memories has been stripped away. Whatever you decide, I hope you can feel truly at home in your current situation from now on.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You excel at the last minute scramble. Of course, this fuels your procrastination in general, but at least you can pull out all the stops when you need to, and deliver on time—if only just barely. This is a fine strategy, most of the time. When it doesn’t work very well is when you have to put aside other stuff—stuff you might really like to do—in order to finish the crap you should have done ages ago. Because there’s some excellent stuff coming up—and nothing amazing happening this week—why don’t you spend a little time getting caught up, or better yet, ahead of yourself? Then you won’t have to miss out later.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Sometimes you wish that you could just find a magic portal in your home. You’d step through it and most of your problems would simply evaporate. Well naturally there’s no such thing, but this week you may be able to create its metaphorical equivalent. The key? A few magic words you already know but haven’t had a chance (or the nerve) to say out loud yet. Once you open and step through that door, it won’t erase most of your problems, but it will eliminate a few, and probably make the rest a bit easier to deal with. Of course, there’ll be a whole new set of problems on that side of things, but go there anyway— for the change of pace, if nothing else.
BOTOX
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Being good is about what you do when no one’s watching. I know how you love the spotlight, and you certainly never pass up getting credit and recognition for all the sweet and generous stuff you do. But what truly counts—especially this week, but really all the time—is the kindness you exhibit when no one could possibly notice or realize it’s you. I believe that you want to be not only a good person but a great person. This week you’ll have ample opportunity to move down that path if you can wrap your head around one thing—no one but you will ever know you did.

This week is about not solving problems. You have the perfect solution to a complication experienced by a couple of your friends, but I beg you not to share it. Instead, look deeper and realize that this “problem” shouldn’t be solved. If you give them no choice but to fix it, that will only open the door to much greater and more difficult to solve quandaries. Can you see this as a necessary evil, realize that it’s not so bad, and resist your urge to make everything “better?” I hope so—if not, your well-intentioned meddling is only likely to make things much worse.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I have never seen you have so much trouble with being patient before. “Time is running out!” you proclaim, as if that hasn’t always been the case. Perhaps you’ve only just realized it, but in reality nothing has changed, and rushing through this moment to get to the next one won’t actually make it come sooner. In fact, it will devalue the future when you finally get there, as well as making you miss everything that’s happening right now. Yes, you’re running out of time. That’s why you need to slow down enough to enjoy every precious second you have left.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Sometimes being naughty gets you exactly the kind of attention you want and deserve, and sometimes it gets you precisely the type of scrutiny and judgment you don’t want (but may also deserve). It’s the uncertainty that makes your “bad” behavior all the more titillating and exciting, like playing with electricity. Will you get a refreshing jolt or a painful zap? Somehow I doubt you could be happy without a little bit of both. Luckily both are on the table this week, and both are what you’ll get. It’s all or nothing. If you don’t want a little pain mixed with your pleasure this week, I’d suggest sticking to your best behavior.

Imagine you woke up this morning and walked out to your garden (real or imaginary), to find it choked with weeds. All the plants you’d carefully sown were struggling to poke a few leaves into the sun past the wild and hardy plants that had sprung up around them. Then imagine that instead of going on a weeding frenzy, you simply shrugged and walked away. That’s more or less the equivalent of what you’re thinking about doing. You’ve spent a lot of time nurturing this particular garden. Even though it would be a bit of hard, back-breaking labor to make sure it will survive and thrive, don’t you think it’s ultimately worth it? I do.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You could run around the world a hundred times over and never catch the thing you’re looking for, because it’s running in the same direction, at around the same speed. I hope you figure that out soon— this week, ideally—and decide to give another strategy a go. Perhaps reversing direction? That’d ensure you’d encounter your objective, but it might hurtle past so quickly you’d miss it, unless your reflexes were amazing. What about stopping in place and holding up a big stop sign? Sticking out a leg to trip it as it sprints past? Whatever works. All I know is that what you’ve been doing most definitely does not.

Tone down the harshness. One of the things I appreciate about you is your willingness to tell it like it is, to speak the truth even if it’s a bit hard for people to hear. It’s one of the reasons you’re my hero. However, this week I suggest biting your tongue. There’s no reason to withhold your opinions if they’re actively solicited, but please refrain from sharing them with people who haven’t asked for them, because it will only get you into trouble, piss people off, and result in nothing especially productive. No need to lie, or to withhold requested information—just keep quiet whenever you can, and let things play out however they’re going to. That way you can still be the “good guy” when they do.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Let’s pretend that you got engaged. Your sweetheart, who was poor, gave you a cute kitschy plastic ring that was just as valuable to you as one with a diamond, because of its sentimental value. Now let’s imagine that you scratched it today and discovered that beneath its garishly colored exterior lay real gold. Would you be petty and pissed because you’d been deceived, perhaps even tested? Or thrilled that what you got out of the deal you agreed to is better than you ever imagined? Since either reaction is equally possible, why don’t you steer yourself towards the one that will make the most people happy?
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It’s almost like the more you want something, the less likely you are to get it. Although some of this is merely your own perception, there is a grain of truth here. Your desire is actually tripping you up, so that you stumble before you get to your goal. So we come to the lesson you’ve learned and relearned throughout your life: Let it go. Let this go and you may or may not get it. But at least you’ll get something, which is more than you’ll have if you keep trying to hang on to this.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
There’s a lot of buzz going on right now about Miley Cyrus. This is where I was planning on giving a detailed explanation of who Miley Cyrus is, but then I decided that if you don’t already know you should just put the damn paper down and slither back under that big rock you call a home. Recently, Annie Leibovitz photographed Ms. Cyrus, 15, for Vanity Fair and people are freaking out because they feel the pictures are too provocative. I’ve bit my tongue over the past few weeks because really, what business is it of mine to bash other people and their opinions? But alas, I’m finally going to have my say in the matter because honestly, I don’t have anything else to talk about. The fact that I’m jumping on this crazy bandwagon makes me wonder if boredom is the ultimate culprit behind our society’s obsession with celebrities. I admit that I check out gossip sites most regularly when I’m supposed to be doing something else, like bathing my kids or writing a story. And I go to celebrity sites like a person goes to an adult site–not because I think it’s a depiction of real life, but primarily because I want to escape my own humdrum reality, if only for five minutes. That being said, all this Internet and news chatter about Cyrus is much to do about abso-fricking-lutely nothing. Seriously, the girl is fully clothed in most of the shots and when not, the most skin you can see is on her side and back. I don’t see parents lining up outside of the toy store boycotting Nightclub Barbie or the Pedophile Bratz, both of which I think are way more sleazy than the photos of a 15-year-old girl–sitting in an upright position!–completely covered by a sheet. Furthermore, all the parents in an uproar about the pictures should take a chill-pill because the last time I checked, Vanity Fair was a magazine for grown-ups, not something kids will stumble across while browsing Junie B titles in Borders. Yes, Cyrus is a role model for young girls. I take that back—her Disney character “Hannah Montana” should be the role model for our daughters. I’m okay with the idea of Hannah Montana as a role model because I know for a fact that her character on the show is going to keep things rated G. But a problem occurs when parents allow their kids to idolize the human behind the character. Characters are easily controlled–writers create their moral code, reaction to situations and even the consequences to those reactions. People, even good people, aren’t so stable or predictable. Kids, especially teenagers, are bound to make mistakes. To me, that’s cool. Mistakes are natural; it’s how we pick ourselves up after we fall that defines what type of person we are. Even if I felt that the photos Cyrus took were in bad taste–and I don’t–it wouldn’t be the end of the world. I would wait to see how she handled the situation before judging her. Most importantly, I think parents need to remember that it’s in their power–at least with young children–to monitor who their children look up to. My daughter is a huge Hannah Montana fan and she doesn’t have a clue that there’s even a tad bit of controversy surrounding the star. I like to see childhood as a twilight between fact and fiction, where the two worlds aren’t clearly separated, and I think that it’s preferable to let kids get caught up in the world of controlled, scripted role models rather than celebrities. Not that this is a perfect solution, but it works for us. Of course, my girl also thinks her real father is Spider-Man. Starr Begley is really excited to meet Egan Inoue at the mall this Saturday.
