LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR THE WORD FROM HANA As an avid fan of Maui Time, and bringing it to Hana for years, I would like to share some light and delight of Hamoa Beach. The service drive is exactly that, servicing emergency vehicles, police and fire, which has been utilized many times (“Road No Longer Traveled, May 10, 2007). Hotel Hana-Maui also offers a hotel shuttle service (to drop off and pick up) guests, also deliver food and supplies, [if] needed. It needs the accessibility for the engineering and landscaping to fix, maintain and beautify the hotel-owned land, there is limited space. Within ADA guidelines, the drive has been opened for assistance with individuals whom are disabled, and other special circumstances. Imagine an ambulance or rescue vehicle being blocked in or out for public access. -Lopaka, former beach attendant, via email

Wait a minute—wasn’t the point sold by the hotel’s present owners, too? Along with the pastures fronting the ocean to Lehoula Beach? And how about Maka‘alae? Hana’s coastline is going to be posted with big “NO TRESPASSING” signs... This means me... and you... and your children... and their children, too. Auwe. -Alberta de Jetley, via email So what’s the deal with you guys bashing the Hotel Hana-Maui one week and then gushing over their restaurant the next (“For the Love of Pumpkin,” May 17, 2007)? Forgive me, but that looked a little odd. -Anonymous, via email

The Editor explains: Believe it or not, it looked odd to us, too. But it was just random chance. In fact, the reporters for both pieces happened to be at Hotel Hana-Maui on the same day, covering their respective stories, and didn’t even know it.

Hamoa Beach is truly one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawai‘i and a swim at Hamoa is always on my “must do” list whenever I visit Hana. Liliana Begley’s article in your May 10th issue (“Road No Longer Traveled”) was an eye-opener! As far as I can remember, and I originally moved to Hana to live in 1969, there have always been questions about the public’s access to the beach. Since Hana Ranch and Hotel Hana-Maui have gone through several changes in ownership over the years, it may be time for the County of Maui and the state to step in and officially condemn a right of way to Hamoa. Owners come and go and their policies are like the ocean: ever-changing. I don’t want to go to Hamoa this summer and be told, “Sorry, we changed the rules. You may not walk down our pathway and you certainly may not use our access road. We suggest you swim in from the point.”

I felt shock and dismay as I watched you. Walking to my car in the grocery store parking lot, I watched you—a store employee—collecting shopping carts. You seemed to be doing a good job, until I saw you take a bag of fast food trash that was in one of the carts and throw it on the ground. Brah, we usually blame tourists for disrespecting like that, but you were no tourist. I was outraged—so much so that I grabbed my cell phone and called the store manager. After I explained what I just saw, all your “manager” could say was “uh huh, ok.” “What?” I asked. “You’re not upset? Are you going to do anything about it? Do you even care?” All I got in reply was more monotone grunting. Here’s a thought: how about the both of you become tourists here and take your disgusting, thoughtless behavior somewhere else.

MTW: So why take on Pearl Harbor? GINGRICH: Well, you know, when Bill Forstchen and I developed a really fun, three-version history on the civil war starting with Gettysburg, we really enjoyed it. And when we

MTW: You mentioned in the Contract with America that one of the problems we face today is the “entrenched lobbyists and entrenched bureaucracies.” There was actually a bill in Hawai‘i addressing this. It was called the “Hawai‘i Clean Elections” bill and it gave publicly raised monies to citizens interested in campaigning for public office. Do you think something like that is a good idea? GINGRICH: Well I think it would be a good idea to have a tax credit Newt: doesn’t like the nuts for political donations. What would the first three steps be that you would take as a conservative environmentalist? GINGRICH: Look, you know, green conservatives would develop some serious incentives for the changes we want. I’d like to see a refundable tax credit for land conservation that you could actually transfer to the people. I’d like to see a prize for the development of the first hydrogen-based car so we can dramatically reduce carbon loading in the atmosphere, and I’d be willing to put up to a billion dollars up tax-free for the first mass-produced car that could stand up to the challenges of being a hydrogen rather than a petroleum-based car. I’d like to see tax incentives in favor of dramatically more solar, wind and other types of power. MTW: Have you met with Senator Fred Hemmings? GINGRICH: No, I look forward to seeing him. MTW: He’s promoting hydrogen-based power in Hawai‘i. GINGRICH: I will track him down because we’ll be in Oahu Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Sean Hannity and Ollie North. So we will find him and we will meet with him. Gingrich will speak and sign copies of Pearl Harbor on Wed., May 30 at 6 p.m. at Borders Books in Kahului. MTW

Just about everyone has heard the name Newt Gingrich. In 1995 he became the first Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in 40 years. Ostensibly elected on an anti-corruption platform, Gingrich and his minions quickly began a rollback of social, environmental and progressive legislation that continues to this day. But after just three years, the Atlanta Republican called it quits and left Congress. Today Gingrich writes “alternative history” novels in which he and cowriters re-imagine historical figures and events in a different reality. This week, he’ll appear on Maui promoting his new novel Pearl Harbor. Last week I spoke with him by phone about writing, politics and how to keep the “nuts” from running for office:

ROBREPORT
BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET
Reality vs. Insanity Will South Maui embrace golf links, or links to our past?
Photo: Pietro Ortiz
More than 200 people gathered at Kihei Community Center on the evening of May 14 to hear the possible impacts of continued South Maui development. Many had driven past the corner of Mokulele and Pi‘ilani Highways, where a banner in bold letters shouted, “13,000 more houses?” That’s according to regional data from the Maui County Planning Department on designated and proposed housing units. Maui Tomorrow Foundation and SaveMakena.org organized the panel discussion, complete with great pupus. Six panelists gave answers to poignant questions regarding water, traffic, smart growth, affordable housing and distinctive cultural and botanical sites. They may have been “preaching to the choir”—the audience seemed to resonate with calls to slow down and limit growth. Still, the educational evening provided a rational counterpoint to well-funded developer sales pitches and claims that more luxury housing is in Maui’s best interest. Wailea 670/Honua‘ula was most often cited as creating the biggest impacts. The proposal for 1,400 new housing units, a private golf course and wastewater treatment facility is likely to face County Council Land Use Committee hearings next month on their pending applications. But a groundswell of community concerns may cause the Wailea 670 developers to address tough questions regarding potential impacts, much as Makena Resort did in 2004 when County Council members attached 42 conditions to their rezoning requests.

Isaac Moriwake, an Oahu attorney with Earthjustice, addressed water issues. Maui Tomorrow and Earthjustice are among the petitioners asking the State Water Commission to consider “designating” the stream waters of Na Wai Eha (‘Iao, Waikapu, Waiehu and Waihe‘e Streams) as a water management area. The groundwater of the ‘Iao Aquifer is already designated as such, having surpassed its sustainable yield of pumping to service Central and South Maui. “Domestic water is tapped out,” said Moriwake. “It has been overdrawn for many years. Now there is a push to use the streams as a source. We need to support the streams and lo‘i [taro] and let the older generation know the party’s over. Don’t mortgage away our future.”
MAY 24, 2007
South Maui’s future
Moriwake said that treating Wailuku Water Company (formerly Wailuku Sugar and Wailuku Agribusiness) as a private water seller is, “antithetical to the State Constitution’s mandate that water be held in a public trust.” Wailea 670’s representative has stated that their proposed development has “plenty of water” and will include a private water system. These assurances didn’t mollify Moriwake. “There are many wells in South Maui, and all are brackish,” he said. “The water area is screaming for people to take action. We need to ask some ‘get real’ questions such as, ‘Does the developer have the right to build in a desert?’” Moriwake spoke of the need for a water availability rule, or a “Show me the water law” such as the one California instituted. Councilmember Michelle Anderson, who chairs the Water Resources Committee, was in the audience and said that the Council is working on such a bill that would require a developer to provide complete water analysis and show that they have adequate water supply for the next 20 years. Affordable housing was another big topic. Stan Franco of Housing for the Local Person said that even with the new Workforce Housing Policy passed last year—requiring 40-50 percent affordable units with any new development—“We’re in a crisis right now.” But he said cooperation is happening, and that an estimated 4,200 units are needed. He acknowledged that Councilmember Anderson was also working on an ordinance that would prioritize available water resources for affordable housing. Maui Meadows resident Zach Franks, billed as a “smart growth” developer, said
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
the key to visioning is to ask if a project proposal will improve things or make them worse. He said that urban infill is less expensive, and enables towns to become more vital and richer. He suggested that maybe the Wailea 670 developer could put in 200 units, a hundred each of affordable and market price, and “call it a day.” Dr. Lee Altenberg, a University of Hawai‘i at Manoa professor and chair of Maui’s Native Hawaiian Plant Society, showed a presentation of the remnant native dryland forest that exists on 110 of the parcel’s 670 acres. He noted that 24 native plant species are found in this ecosystem growing on an a‘a lava flow that dates back to 8300 B.C. Native wiliwili trees perhaps hundreds of years old are found here, as are awikiwiki and nehe—rare enough to be considered as candidates for listing as threatened and endangered species. see INSANITY, page 11
LC Watch Pineapple Booze! It isn’t often you see the phrase “Sex On The Beach” in a Maui County Liquor Commission agenda, but it does happen from time to time. For instance, the commission’s May 9, 2007 hearing, which included a preliminary hearing— the first of two required of all prospective liquor licensees—for Hawaiian Islands Spirits. Back in late March, Hawaiian Islands Spirits formed a partnership of sorts with Maui Land and Pineapple Co. to open a distillery in one of ML&P’s Kahului buildings and use pineapple juice to distill various alcoholic blends and “other than standard wine.” News of the agreement made all the big papers—including this one—but at least one Liquor Commissioner didn’t seem to have read about it. In fact, that commissioner—Chairperson Frances Meshulam—didn’t even seem to read Hawaiian Islands Spirits’ actual license application, which was sitting in front of her. “Are you having problems with your lease?” Meshulam asked company vice president Robert Gunter. “No ma’am,” Gunter said. Meshulam frowned. “Well, usually an executed lease is the first thing you get,” she said. Gunter paused. “We have an executed lease with Maui Pineapple Co.,” he said. Oh. Eventually, Commissioner Curt Morimoto finally asked Gunter—in a roundabout way and without actually mentioning the words “Sex On The Beach”—why that was printed on the agenda. Gunter replied that LC officials had suggested he list every possible drink his distillery might someday produce—Flavored Whisky, Melon Ball, Harvey Wallbanger, etc.—irrespective of whether he immediately planned to make them. You know, just in case. Oh. The panel approved Gunter’s preliminary application. His final public hearing should come up at the commission’s June meeting.

Have the stars aligned in such a formation that would topple the existing power structure as we know it? “For the first time since its rebirth as an independent company two years ago,” the Honolulu StarBulletin reported on May 16, “Hawaiian Telcom has recorded a quarterly profit.” I was stunned, too, probably because I had grown used to reading the papers month after month after month and finding ever more news that HT—owned by Carlyle Group, one of the wealthiest and most powerful private equity firms in the world—could not even master its most elemental function, which was to answer the phone when customers called to complain about billing problems. But now, according to HT CEO Michael Ruley, all that is in the past. “We are building a stronger foundation going forward,” Ruley told the Star-Bulletin, which is a beautiful, though paradoxical and ultimately physically impossible, quote.

THE PRICE IS NOT RIGHT Anyone who drives an automobile that feeds on petroleum-based fuel—the vast majority of drivers, I’m afraid to say—knows exactly why Tesoro Hawai`i is at the top of the food chain this week. Prices at the pump have topped $3.70 a gallon, and there’s no reason to believe they’ll drop any month soon. The May 17 Pacific Business News says the company’s stock price is rising just about as fast: on May 16, the release of a U.S. government gas supply report predict “tight supplies” and “higher consumption” are going to drive prices up, up and up, and that drove Tesoro stock price up two percent in just one day, to $116 a share. Can you imagine what the refiner’s quarterly reports are going to show profit-wise? It’s going to be a bitchin’ summer, I can feel it. MTW

his 1,400-unit Wailea 670 project “Honua`ula.” I’m being glib here, but not much: according to the paper, Clifford Naeole, the Native Hawaiian cultural specialist who works for the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, says Honua‘ula—which translates as “Red Earth”—has “always” been “the name of the area,” and thus it’s completely legitimate for Jencks to use as a name for his project. And he’s right, since it’s long been standard practice for developers, both here and on the mainland, to name their big residential developments after whatever natural or cultural features used to exist in the area before they brought in their bulldozers and asphalt pavers.

WEDNESDAY, May 16 It seems like there are more tourists coming to Hawai‘i than ever before, but when I check the local papers I see nothing but bad news for Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL). Last night the Honolulu Advertiser posted this little headline on its website: “Weak Hawai‘i cruise prices cited in NCL’s $61M loss.” That’s $61 million lost in just the first three months of 2007—in the same period last year, the cruise line lost just $28.8 million. And it’s apparently all our faults—the Advertiser says we’ve “dragged down” NCL with our weak dollar and our “significant decrease” in ticket prices—so much so that NCL not only yanked its vaunted, beloved Pride of Hawaii out of Hawaiian waters, but it’s in the process of renaming it Norwegian Jade and it plans to send it to Europe in 2008. I hope you people are happy.

Three people email me the same thing this morning, which tells me something: I really need to stop giving out my email address to every nutcase, yahoo and esteemed member of the public I meet on the street. Anyway, their point was to direct me to a four-page statement dated Mar. 15 from federal Department of Transportation Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton to the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces— like I wouldn’t have eventually read it myself. The statement, which is every bit as fascinating as it sounds, contains a couple sentences that have special significance to us Hawai‘i residents: “The most recent project we approved was two passenger and vehicle fast ferries for Hawaii SuperFerry,” Connaughton told the subcommittee. After giving some static about how high-tech the ferries were, Connaughton described some of their alternate uses. “The ferries are also militarily useful and TRANSCOM [United States Transportation Command] has expressed interest in them,” Connaughton said. Now isn’t that interesting—the Superferry as a fast inter-island transport for the military. Where have I heard that before? But that’s not all—Connaughton also said Hawai‘i Superferry “will be offered for enrollment” in the Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement (VISA), which is a program that makes it possible for the military to take over civilian transport during a special “contingency” like war, natural disaster or zombie attack. According to civilian defense analyst John Pike’s GlobalSecurity.org, VISA is super

SUNDAY, May 20 Great news for anyone on the island who thinks the Westside doesn’t have nearly enough traffic: more than $100 million in condominiums just sold this weekend at the still-under-construction Honua Kai condo towers at Airport Beach, according to a press release sent out today from Playground Destination Properties, which sells the Honua Kai properties. When it’s done—and it’s nearly done—Honua Kai will comprise 627 condos and another 73 townhomes. For those at home keeping track, Honua Kai “occupies the last stretch of undeveloped beachfront on Maui’s famed Ka`anapali Beach”—a fact Playground Destination Properties advertises without irony. But hey, if I sold beachfront condominiums, I’d probably look at irony a lot like this guy: “Our success today of over $100 million in sales is the culmination of the demand for irreplaceable beachfront real estate, our unique location on Ka‘anapali Beach and the easy access for Maui Loyalists to reach their island home,” Sales Director Todd Patrick said in the

MONDAY, May 21 Summer’s nearly here, and that means it’s time once again to bitch about the price of gas. Today’s online Pacific Business News is reporting that—according to AAA Hawai`i—the average price of gasoline in the state is about $3.40 a gallon. Of course, the average price on Maui is a tad higher— like $3.78 a gallon in Wailuku, which is a big part of why our state made fifth out of all 50 states in terms of high average prices—but as far as state averages are concerned we’re just about where we were a year ago. AAA Hawai‘i numbers for the average price of gas statewide back in the summer of 2006 ran about $3.37 a gallon. Overall, prices are about the same as they were a year ago, if not a little higher. And this is absolutely hilarious because last year at this time—April 30 to be exact— state Senator Fred Hemmings (R, 25th District) said that then-recent repeal of the hated gasoline price cap would mean nothing but good things for those of us handcuffed to petroleum-burning engines. He said dumping the cap was “a huge victory for consumers” in that it allowed the state to finally “focus on making oil obsolete by diversifying our energy consumption with renewable and other alternative energy sources.” Say, how’s that going, Fred?

INSANITY: continued from page 8 Current plans call for a private golf course and wastewater treatment plant constructed in this portion, with a mere six acres set aside for native plants. Altenberg called for the developer to set aside the entire lava flow native plant habitat as a botanical preserve. But the most compelling speaker of the evening was Ed Lindsey, a retired schoolteacher. Since 2000, Lindsey has been directing archaeological stabilization and reforestation in West Maui’s Honokowai Valley as part of Maui Cultural Lands, which formed as a non-profit in 2002. The organization has also recently begun replanting the native forest around the top three turbines of the Kaheawa Pastures Wind Farm project. Lindsey was asked what areas of South Maui merit preservation. “Golf courses and archaeological sites don’t mix,” he said, blaming off-island money. “I cry for what’s happening to Hawaiian people here. It’s a crime.” Lindsey addressed the move to rename the Wailea 670 project to Honua‘ula. “It’s window-dressing,” he said. “You need to be worthy of that name. You had better put Hawaiian spirit and values in there before you do anything.” He noted that the Honua‘ula area of South Maui was once the fourth most populated area on the entire island, but that little evidence of that remains. “Some places gotta be left alone,” Lindsey said. “We think we own the world. Here’s a news flash: We don’t. We represent the plants and animals and spirits and stories that have taken place here. Don’t destroy any more of our cultural sites.” “What can young local folks do?” someone asked him. “To the kanaka maoli [Native Hawaiians],” he said, “onipa‘a [be steadfast]. Do your homework. Community participation in Maui’s planning process has often been painted as select citizens and environmental groups simply opposing everything. In fact, a Maui News story even referred to the evening as an “anti-development event.” But on this evening, it was clear that both the speakers and audience members were there because of what they supported: cultural and native plant preservation, water conservation, traffic solution, affordable housing and a better quality of life. Rather than “development vs. anti-development,” the evening discussion more closely reflected “reason vs. insanity.” MTW

Barney Vincelette, who says his autism renders loud noises sickening to him, has been feuding for several years with neighbors in Houston, Del., over their rock music. At first, he invented his own sound-jammer, according to an April profile in the Wilmington News Journal, but a judge curtailed its use. Subsequently, he recorded super-annoying sounds of his own (including a foghorn) and had them written out as music (“Sonata for Calliope of Truck Horns About to Be Transcribed for Locomotive Horns Opus No. 1”), at which point the judge decided that permitting the neighbors’ Bon Jovi but not Vincelette’s sonata amounted to selective law enforcement, and the feuders settled their differences. Vincelette, by the way, lives in a house shaped like a flying saucer.
SWEET SPECS The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, which operates mass transit just south of San Francisco, and whose employees stage about three dozen office parties a year, issued 33 pages of specifications in January to invite local companies to bid on a contract to supply sheet cakes. The winning bidder must be versatile enough to offer cakes in 11 specified flavors, 16 fillings, five icings and six toppings. Also, the bidder must carry $3 million in liability insurance.

The next day, both Larabie and Missy were in Ottawa, Ontario, hospitals, vomiting and foaming at the mouth. The incident occurred in March, during the first days of the alert over rat-poison-laced pet food, and doctors suspected that as the culprit, but no definitive conclusion was reported in the press, and both Larabie and Missy recovered.
EWWWWW! Stewart Laidlaw, 35, was banished from Thirsty Kirsty’s pub in Dunfermline, Scotland, in March, following numerous complaints about his excessive flatulence. A shocked Laidlaw said no one had complained before, but conceded that was probably because cigarette smoke had been masking the odor until Scotland’s recent smoking ban. And in December, an American Airlines flight made an emergency stop in Nashville, Tenn., when passengers reported the smell of burning matches in the cabin. A female passenger was found to have been lighting them at her seat in an effort to vanquish her flatulence odors.
PRINCIPALS GONE WILD In February in Bethlehem, Pa., middle school principal John Acerra was arrested and charged with selling crystal meth from his office—but not to students. Also, when arrested in his office after hours, he was reportedly nude. And in April, in Lorain, Ohio, principal Robert Holloway resigned after apparently too eagerly delivering on a wager. He had bet with some boys on a student-staff volleyball game and lost, and then paid off as agreed by kissing the boys’ feet. But he was too much into it, the boys thought. MTW

he question, as Bill Moyers once asked, is simple: “Is God Green?” You may not have noticed, but God is getting greener for the majority of religious folk in the United States. And in Hawai‘i, though behind the national curve, faith-based groups are beginning to forge cautious partnerships with environmental groups. Not that long ago, the religious right bravely stood behind the Bush Administration, refusing to balk at a rollback on clean air and water protections, increased commercial logging and drilling on public lands and a withdrawal of support for the internationally supported Kyoto protocol on global warming. Recently there’s been a change afoot. In February 2006, a group of 86 high-level evangelical Christian leaders signed the Evangelical Climate Initiative, calling on Christians everywhere to demand legislation and action to reduce global warming. “The same love for God and neighbor that compels us to preach salvation through Jesus Christ, protect the unborn, preserve the family and the sanctity of marriage, and take the whole Gospel to a hurting world, also compels us to recognize that human-induced climate change is a serious Christian issue requiring action now,” the group wrote. On May 25, 2006, Reverend Dr. Bob Edgar, secretary-general of the National Council of Churches (NCC)—which repre-

sents an estimated 45 million Americans— elaborated on that view. “I believe the life issue of our time is global warming,” he said. “I believe that God is calling us to attention on the issue. I can find no place in any of the scriptures, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim or others where God is calling us to participate in destroying the planet. Every place I look, God says, ‘Be stewards of the Earth.’” This change in course for American Christians comes after a long history of hostility toward the environmental movement. For many years, Christian leaders preached that environmentalists worshiped the earth instead of God. Some equated them with idol worshipers and pagans. Many Christians still feel that religion and environmental causes should not mix. In fact, another group of high-profile evangelicals, including James Dobson of Focus on the Family, have denounced the Evangelical Climate Initiative, creating a rare split in the Evangelical church. After Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell’s recent death the Associated Press reported on prominent evangelicals’ views of the deep schism existing in the church. “Focus on the Family founder James Dobson and 24 other Christian leaders this year tried to pressure the National Association of Evangelicals to silence its Washington director, the Rev. vince evangelicals that global warming is real,” the news agency reported on May 16, 2007. “In a February sermon, Falwell warned worshippers at his Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va., that environmental activism by evangelicals ‘is Satan’s attempt to redirect the church’s primary focus’ away from spreading the Gospel.” On the other side of the political spectrum, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has noticed an upswing in interest in global warming issues amongst the faithful. “What we see now is a country that’s more divided on political lines,” said Julia Bovey, an NRDC spokeswoman. “But people are putting differences aside and saying that this is an issue that we can come together on. Partnering with religious leaders in communities has been quite remarkable. The trend is especially noticeable in the South.” his pro-environment trend among evangelicals has reached our shores as well. On April 13, and 14, members of the United Church of Christ on Oahu, as well as a few other churches and faith-based groups, stood with the Sierra Club, Life of the Land, Earth Justice, assorted school groups and various Native Hawaiian organizations for “Step It Up,” a national rally held simultaneous-
T
ly in 700 to 800 other cities nationwide, according to Jeff Mikulina, Director of the Sierra Club of Hawai‘i. The groups rallied for the passage of two state greenhouse gas reduction bills then pending before the state legislature. The next day saw a “Teach In” at Church of the Crossroads on Oahu, which included speakers from both faith-based and environmental action groups. In addition, on the day after Earth Day the United Church of Christ held an “Earth Sabbath,” said Chuck Burrows of the National United Church of Christ Energy Taskforce. I asked Burrows why some faith-based organizations in Hawai‘i have gone green. “If there’s any changes that can be brought about in the conservation and restoration of the environment it must come through a change in behavior,” he said. “This change is a faith change in behavior. Especially since 70 percent of the U.S. claims Christianity [as their religion], these people have a faith in the stewardship of creation. This is the point that Al Gore is making: that global warming isn’t just a political or environmental issue, it’s a moral issue.” Interestingly, none of the above-mentioned events took place on Maui. When I asked Lance Holter, Director of the Sierra Club’s Maui chapter, if there has been any intersection between organized religion and environmentalism here, he

Love at First Byte At Maui Swiss Cafe, the Internet and good food really do splice. Up until a couple months ago, I have always had a crappy car. I pretty much hated to drive. Seriously, I drove to Lahaina twice last year and was kicking myself for getting sucked into it, both times. But then came “The Pilot,” as in Honda Pilot. Climate control is genius. If I was God I would turn the whole Earth into one big Pilot.

Yeah, I’m bragging. Hey, I love my car. I love to drive. To Lahaina, even. In fact, over the weekend I drove to Lahaina and found a really great place to eat. Maui Swiss Cafe is unbelievably awesome, and you really need to go there to believe how great it is. It’s on Front Street, but it’s tucked between Burger King and a bunch of tourist traps. If you’re looking for it, it’s easy to recognize by the hot pink, fluffy table umbrellas. You can’t miss them. It’s an Internet cafe—12 stations, printers—the works, with a full menu of breakfast, sandwiches, pizzas and salads. And I’m not talking no-pansy-ass Wonder Bread and cold-cut sandwiches— I’m talking majorly filing, hearty concoctions of protein, veggies and carbs. Here’s a teaser of some of the food they serve: The Swiss Breakfast—sliced ham, emmentaler (a Swiss cheese), salami, bacon, fruit, hard-boiled egg and a fresh homemade roll with butter and jam; Turkey Broccoli Melt—French baguette (dough from NY) with Dijon mustard, turkey, broccoli, tomato and melted cheese; BBQ Roast Beef Melt—whole

wheat roll with roast beef, onion, mushroom, BBQ sauce and melted cheese; Build-Your-Own pizza with toppings like onion, mushroom, avocado, asparagus, salami, pepperoni, pineapple, ham and bacon; Chef Salad—tossed with bacon, egg, mushrooms and more; the Toscana Salad—garden salad tossed with onion, tomato, salami, mozzarella, mushrooms and olives; and the Swiss Melt—parmesan crust with spicy chicken, onion, mushroom, tomato and melted cheese. Owner Rolf Egli is a vegetarian, so naturally they have a pretty extensive veggie menu for all you herbivores. One of the veggie options they have that sounds D-Lish is the Veggie Melt: a whole wheat roll with grilled zucchini, broccoli, tomato and melted cheese. Where’s the beef? Who cares!
Owner Rolf Egli and Mahina
I personally tried the Turkey Broccoli Melt and the BBQ Roast Beef (both served with salad and chips) along with homemade Swiss rolls and can tell you that the food is hearty, satisfying and totally delicious. If you’ve never tried Swiss bread, and are a carb freak, you are totally missing out. It’s basically a meal in itself. The prices on both the Internet and the food are shockingly low, especially for Lahaina. For the price of a king-sized value meal at Burger King you can get a real, homemade dish and check your email. Not to mention, kama‘aina’s get 20 percent off their bill. And ice cream. I’m pretty sure that it’s by far the cheapest place on the Westside to get really good ice cream. Long live Maui Swiss Cafe, and all hail the Hawai‘i State Driver’s License. May your tastebuds and paycheck both live long and prosper. Amen. MTW

The Parade, the Launch and the Mele Now through Saturday (May 26), on Front St. in Lahaina [FESTIVAL OF CANOES] Canoes are pretty cool. What’s even cooler is the people who sail them. Sail them? Not sure if that’s the proper terminology but you get the picture. We’re talking major navigational skills, and awesome use of the coconut. I went on one of those train tours at the Maui Tropical Plantation once and the guide told us how the Polynesians who did the whole canoe thing would bring young green coconuts aboard instead of fresh water. It was in a handy natural container, stayed fresh and had the perfect balance of electrolytes to keep them hydrated under the hot Pacific sun. If you found this tidbit of info at least a little bit interesting, you should check out the International Festival of Canoes in LahainaTown. You’ll probably learn a lot of cool stuff. This Saturday they’re having a Parade of Canoes at 10 a.m. down Front Street, followed by Ho‘olaule‘a festivites, a ceremonial launch and live entertainment. It’s a great opportunity to learn about this aspect of our Hawaiian culture. For info visit online at www.MauiCanoeFest.com or call 667-9193. [LILIANA BEGLEY]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Peace Not Palm Trees Saturday (May 26), 7 p.m. at the Studio Maui [PRO-PEACE ART/DANCE/FUNDRAISER PARTY] “This collaborative effort brings together an array of street performances, poetry slams, peace dances, movies, lectures, and many innovative views of war and peace,” raves Tim Garcia of Maui Artists for Peace. In a response to the seemingly endless presentation of pastoral sunsets and pristine waves produced by Maui’s lovely and possibly out-of-touch painters, a collaboration of activist artists has put together a party co-sponsored by Maui Peace Action and The Studio Maui. Artist Tom Sewell elaborates, “Artists can no longer produce just pretty paintings and whimsical sculptures. We have a president who has sent over 3200 American troops to their deaths. Many more Iraqis have died. Our reputation, as Americans, in the world has seriously deteriorated and we can no longer all stand by letting this happen.” Wear your outspoken t-shirts and participate in this return to reason. Suggested donation: $10. For info call 808-575-9390 or visit online at www.thestudiomaui.com. [KIRA SABINI]

Sunday (May 27), 1-6 p.m. at Baldwin Beach Park [PARTY] They’ve been doing it for five years now. What, you ask? Why, have a big festival on the beach, of course. For what reason? Who knows. And for that matter, who cares. It’s a frickin’ party on the beach! The Fifth Annual Unity Festival will feature live local bands—mainly of the roots, rock and reggae flavor—as well as a potluck and free, freshly popped, carnival-style popcorn. I’m guessing there could be some carnival-style people there, as well. But maybe I’m just hoping. The event is free and sponsored by Sinew420.

Newt Live and on Stage!
Greasers Unite! Wednesday (May 30), 6:30 p.m. at the Kihei Community Center
Wednesday (May 30), 6 p.m. at Borders in Kahului [BOOK SIGNING] Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich—a right-wing Republican once in all seriousness observed that women can do office work better than men because “males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes”—is coming to Maui. That this is unquestionably the most ridiculously awesome thing to happen on our island this year—take that, Earth, Wind & Fire!— goes without saying. Ostensibly he’s appearing at Borders to push his new book Pearl Harbor, and that’s fine. We can forget for the moment that Gingrich has made many, many hints about running for president next year. We can also put out of our minds the fact that in the 1990’s he was an astonishingly unpopular House Speaker who transformed Congress from a body focused on working people to one that largely catered to corporate interests. Or that he recently admitted to doing some chick who wasn’t his wife at the same time he was spending long hours trying to convince the American people that the House had to impeach President Bill Clinton because he lied about getting a blow job from an intern. This is Newt we’re talking about. This is going to be fun. Borders is located in the Maui Marketplace, 270 Dairy Rd., Kahului. For more information call 877-6160. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
DAY
[DANCE/POTLUCK] I’ve already divulged my obsession with Grease and Danny Zucko, but have I mentioned my fetish for The Outsiders? Yeah, as in the coming-of-age (set in the late ‘50’s) book by S.E. Hinton. The movie sucked but the book changed my life. Forever will I be turned on by the words “Ponyboy” and “Sodapop,” not to mention I kind of feel obligated to nurture and take care of all of the Johnny’s that come my way. For those of you who are feeling me on this one, I have great news: The Aloha Ballroom Dance Academy is putting on a 1950’s theme Sock Hop featuring ballroom, swing and Latin music to groove to. There’s also a potluck going on—everyone is required to bring something along the lines of a pupu, salad, entree or dessert. Just no garlic, no spicy stuff, no chips and dip. Follow these directions or risk getting jumped by a guy with a comb in his back pocket. Suggested donation: $10. For info call 879-0055 or visit online at www.alohaballroom.com. [LILIANA BEGLEY]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Bugged William Friedkin follows the trajectory of American fear William Friedkin ratchets up suspense and terror to an almost unbearable level with his adaptation of Tracy Letts’ award-winning 2004 OffBroadway play Bug, about a couple of outsiders consumed by paranoia. The psycho-satiric dramatic material is like a Sam Shepherd play amped up on a steroid and amphetamine cocktail.
Bug
★★★★★ Rated R/101 mins.
Without the benefit of make-up, Ashley Judd chews scenery and spits it out as Agnes, an ordinary lower class loser holed up in a desert motel room where she’s a sitting duck for her abusive ex-husband Jerry (Harry Connick Jr.), recently released after two years in prison. Emotionally damaged by the disappearance of her young son some years ago, lonely Agnes welcomes the live-in romantic attention of Peter, a self-professed Gulf War veteran (magnificently played by Michael Shannon in the role he created onstage in London and New York). Between earsplitting hovering helicopters and threatening visits from Jerry, Peter discovers “bugs” he
24
MAY 24, 2007
calls aphids that he believes were planted under his skin as part of a military medical experiment. It isn’t long before the tiny mechanized insects also invade Agnes’ physiology, and the couple descends into a bizarre reality consumed with a panicstricken fear scratching at them from their insides out. Bug is a disorienting story because of its rudderless characters, whose suggestibility to conspiracy theories pull them down a path of excruciating suspicion of a government-programmed infestation of robot bugs. It’s no accident that the term “bug” is synonymous with surveillance devices, or that similar such aphids are referenced in Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly. Tracy Letts’ play is a micro-microcosm of an American reality that could be played out in any urban living room or suburban kitchen where people turn their paranoid attention inward. Agnes works as a cocktail waitress at a roadhouse bar where her lesbian best friend R.C. (Lynn Collins) also works. R.C. clearly has the hots for Agnes, but knows that Agnes isn’t willing to make such concessions even if she has sworn off men, so R.C. introduces Agnes to Peter, a shy drifter who seems harmless enough for all of his geeky Boy Scout charm. We know from the way Peter talks that he is a damaged person. He’s dismissive of sex as a compartmentalized act that he’s not interested in, when the subject comes up. Peter’s low self-esteem painfully leaks out when he tells Agnes that he’s “not good for much.”
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Okay, who’s got the Cortaid?
But after a nasty yet thankfully brief visit from Jerry, Agnes is happy to have Peter’s passive aggressive male presence around. One of the film’s juiciest scenes comes when Jerry tries to use his bulk and macho attitude to intimidate Peter whose slight build and obsessive disposition belie his unnerving ability to put Jerry off balance with an adamant description of the bug infestation that consumes the motel room. Letts’ script magnifies the ambiguity of a world where suspicion is the only currency. The disappearance of Agnes’ little boy has turned her into a drug addict desperate for an intimacy that will make her
whole again. When Dr. Sweet, a man who introduces himself as a military psychiatrist, arrives to examine Peter, it seems that Letts will finally give away a concrete answer about the veracity of the bug infestation that haunts Peter and Agnes. But Dr. Sweet is also a drug addict, so how could he be who he says he is? There are many more allegations buried within the microscopic narrative egg sacks that Friedkin and his daring cast explore with agonizing curiosity. Who or what you, do or don’t, believe will probably only be answered by your subconscious mind. That’s not to say that your guts won’t be in on the action. MTW

Pole-Dancing Mama Studio Butterfly provides a safe chrysalis for erotic transformation I move with the grace of a tranquilized rhinoceros. Not that this bothers me, because I’ve always been kind of burly. It’s just that looks can be deceiving. See, I’m a petite person—through no fault of my own. I slather everything in butter, order my latte’s breve, think red meat is rather tasty and turn my nose up at the thought of “light” beer. Being petite (like most things in my life) is my mom’s fault. My mom is one hot mama and she’s still (at close to 50) super fit. I know, I should just shut up and be stoked on the good genes but before you jump on the bitchcalling wagon, let me explain my dilemma: My mom looks like a dancer and moves like a dancer. I may look like a ballerina, but I dance like a linebacker. Growing up with a mom that could dance backup for the Go Go’s left me with a big fat complex. Seriously, moving my stiff little body has always been a breeding ground for major, palmsweating anxiety. So when I heard about Studio Butterfly—Maui’s first and only exotic dancing and pole dancing studio—I got really excited. According to owner and teacher Carmen Ferri’s mission statement, the studio was created for women to, “Provide a safe place... for exploring their inner sensuality and beauty...” Bingo. Ferri has been a Pilates teacher for years and I figured learning to elongate and stretch probably wouldn’t be a bad idea while I was

at it. So I went. And fell in love. Ferri is absolutely gorgeous and made me feel totally welcome and capable of expressing myself. Was it easy to let go of my inhibitions? Hell no. Was I able to feel myself letting go by the end of the class? Totally. Exotic fitness is a real workout. It may have something to do with the fact that I have religiously refused to exercise for years, but I swear I was sweating and burning five minutes into the floor routine. And I do mean sweating and burning in the best sense of the words. I mean, what better way to get fit and gain body confidence than by learning moves that you can use in the bedroom. Hello? It makes total sense to me. Somehow, the workout becomes worth it. My favorite part of the workout was “The Bad Girl,” which consists of placing your palms flat against the wall and slowly moving your hips up and down and back and forth. Then again, I liked learning the whole leg sequence where you do a little peep show. Totally hot—and totally not as easy as it looks. When we moved to the pole, I was at once petrified and ecstatic. Ferri demonstrated “The Butterfly,” a graceful little move where you grip the pole and swing yourself into a spin with your ankles kind of crossed. She looked amazing. Then it was my turn. It was really intimidating at first. I felt like I was going to fall on my ass. I’m pretty sure my first few attempts resembled a Jackson Chameleon trying to transfer branches. I
clutched to the pole for dear life, but then something happened. I decided to just let go. The difference was amazing, and before I knew it I was swinging away to Van Halen and having the time of my life. I even let Ferri take pictures of me. Photographical evidence of my naughty side. A naughty side that I feel pretty proud of today. I’m totally signing up for more classes, and am so stoked that there is a cool, safe place where I can be silly, laugh, be sexy and basically find myself right here on Maui. Not to mention, a place where I can wear those hooker shoes that I keep staring at in my closet. For more info and to reserve a spot, check out www.studiobutterflymaui.com. MTW

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) It’s new school vs. old school this week, and guess what? You, of course, get to push for the new, better way of doing things. Newer isn’t always an improvement; quite often the opposite, actually, which is where the old school gets its strength. However, this time, traditional sticks-in-the-mud have it wrong, and it’s up to you to show (and prove) it to them. Hint: “Do as I say, not as I do,” won’t cut it this week. You can’t tell them how things could be better. You have to show them.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) A strong desire for surprises can often help you in life. In fact, they’re about the only thing you can ultimately count on. Having expectations—of your children, say—will only lead to disappointment. However, entering parenthood or a relationship with excitement about all the unknowable things the new person will bring into your life is going to make you much happier than the vain hope that you can effectively steer them or your connection in any direction. How deep is your thirst for exploring uncontrollable, thrilling new territory with someone new? This week, swallow a spoonful of salt or do whatever it takes to make sure it’s fairly unquenchable.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Imagine you were an animal with only one chance per year of having a baby. If predators or circumstance claimed a few of your precious infants, it would be quite hard to contemplate trying again. Hopefully, you would, anyway, and you’d also be smart enough to attempt a different strategy to help your child survive. Luckily, you can breed whenever you like. Falling in love, however, is another matter. Most Leos only open to that every so often—and with less frequency after being hurt or screwed over. However, I hope you haven’t given up forever—and that, when you do allow the possibility again, you try something truly different, something that might just allow your love to survive.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Although world-renowned as the epitome of practicality, you ought to be equally well-known for some of your cockamamie ideas. You’re usually a miracle of efficiency, so practically no one notices when you pour your abundant energy into these truly twisted and deluded ventures, except those closest to you (who probably tried to stop you, and would have, if you weren’t so stubborn). I won’t try to convince you not to pursue your latest private obsession. However, if your idiosyncrasies get in the way of something undeniably real (like your relationship), would you consider, at least this week, taking them down a notch or two?
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) If you ask advice of a friend, be prepared to seriously consider taking it, even if it’s not what you want to hear. You’re under absolutely no obligation to do what they say—but you ought to give it a fair listen. If you’re simply fishing for validation, don’t piss off your friends by ignoring them if they don’t give it to you. Everyone deludes themselves at times. Sometimes you have the benefit of a straight-talking, no-bullshit friend who’ll help you cut through an illusion or two. This week, won’t you let them?
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Instead of looking at how much you have left to do, consider how much you’ve already done. Yes, the road ahead of you is long, but you’ve come a long way so far. That ought to give you strength and hope. Regarding the stretch ahead of you at the moment is too daunting. Instead, look back at what you’ve already endured and survived, and remind yourself you could do it again, and then some. Your trials and travails may have worn you down on the surface, but underneath they’ve tempered and developed your strength. Dig deep. You’ll find underneath your weary, exhausted exterior, you’re steel.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) As I write this, it’s been raining for days, and even the most adventurous Sags I know have become homebodies, staring glumly out their spotted windows and waiting for the sun to return. You know the feeling, don’t you? Sometimes there’s nothing you can do about a situation except cool your heels and wait it out. That’s exactly the case this week. Being proactive will only frustrate and exhaust you, and possibly make circumstances worse. Chill out. The more you can give this knotty situation a bit of breathing space, the more likely it will untangle itself.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You need carrots, not cattle-prods, this week. You’ve had enough nagging and ass-kicking in your life lately. You deserve some kind of reward. Not a vacation, not yet. You’ve still got a lot to do. But maybe you can find a way to treat yourself after every step along the way? You might need the promise (and delivery) of sweet treats, or massages, or dates, or screws, to get you through the next few chapters. Don’t deny yourself. Being stern and hard on yourself isn’t going to cut it at the moment. Be sweet, gentle and encouraging instead.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Don your verbal boxing gloves, because it’s time to step up (again) and go to battle for what you know is right and just. Why you? It’s your job, I’m afraid. You’re the most versatile and rugged of the air signs, and uniquely qualified. Libras make great politicians and moderators, and Geminis are funny and inventive. But only you can marry emotion to fact effectively and not be knocked out by a determined counterattack. That’s what’s required this week: someone to stand up for what they believe in who can take a few punches and keep on fighting. Like it or not, darling, that’s you.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) It’s like you were bitten by a Volkswagen-sized spider, and now you’re just waiting, paralyzed, for it to return and suck out your insides. Only the waiting can last months or years, and there’s no spider venom; this incapacitation is purely self-induced. What you need to know is that it only gets worse; the longer you wait before you act, the harder it will be. The thing you also need to know is that it’s never too late to step up and do something. Quit waiting, you delusional creature. Haven’t you suffered enough? I guarantee that whatever you do now will hurt you less, in the long run, than not doing anything, and, even if it stings a bit now, you won’t regret it.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
KPOA 93.5 FM – Westside tune to 92.9 FM KJKS 99.9 KISS FM – Westside tune to 99.3 FM KJMD 98.3 DaJAM – Westside tune to 107.3 FM KLHI 101.1 The Point – Westside tune to 101.7 FM
Is anybody still listening to you? Sometimes, you get so impassioned about something that you can go on. And on. And not even notice that everyone you’re talking to has tuned out, or even walked away. Pay attention, darling. Most of the people around you adore you, but if you take that adoration for granted, it might just get a bit frayed around the edges. Success and happiness this week means seeing the world as it is, and that means noticing that not everyone quite shares your enthusiasms. You still ought to share them—but perhaps in slightly smaller doses.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Your Earthy cousins have it rough. Capricorns never take a break because their ambition won’t let them, and Virgos can’t relax and chill out because they simply have too much energy. Sometimes I wish they’d both take a page out of your book, since you know how to get shit done and occasionally stop and enjoy life. Won’t you share your hard-won wisdom with them, and get them to sit down long enough to smell some roses, drink some iced tea, and simply do nothing more than shoot the shit?

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
I’m having a hard time relaxing these days. Especially since I came back from vacation. And especially since I’m starting to think it’s time to leave Maui. The boyfriend took it well, at first. He was sad but supportive, saying he understood and wanted me to take advantage of opportunities to further my career. He was very encouraging and positive. Until he wasn’t. It was understandable, of course. But that was when I realized giving a threemonth advance notice might turn out to be an energy-draining, guilt-ridden, heartbreaking emotional rollercoaster. And so began the negotiations. We finally settled on splitting custody of the house for the next month—he’d get it on weekends since that’s when he has his kids. And I’d take the time to finish up side projects and visit with friends and subsequently, their couches and futons. It was an amicable agreement, and enabled us both to get used to the idea of my possible departure without all the dramatic flourishes. But then his pops passed away. You might be wondering at this point in the column: 1) Where is the humor? And 2) When is Holoholo Girl gonna get shit-faced on tequila and encourage her comrades to take off their tops at various bars around the island? Yes, when and where indeed, my friends. With boyfriend off to the Big Island to join the family in mourning, I dove into some freelance work, which just so happened to involve cocktail research. No really, I’m serious. So I found myself at my longtime friend and favorite curly red(-ish)-haired girl Sarah’s bar at the Tiki Lounge. Only she was too busy fending off stalkers and pouring liquor into cauldron-sized glass tiki mugs so I ended up talking to a Bosnian construction dude from Idaho. Or was it Iowa. Anyway, he was a nice chap. And though he hadn’t yet decided if Maui would be a good relocation choice for him, his obsession with Heineken and surf videos led me to believe he’d fit right in. Another guy friend came in and talked to me about a chick he’s currently digging on. With that first flush and glazed look of lust/like in his eyes, he wondered aloud if it was time to have the exclusivity talk. You know the one—it’s where the desired result is both parties saying, “I don’t want to be with anybody else but you,” although if one of you doesn’t say this, then it’s all awkward and gross? Either way, everything changes forever after this point. I warned him against it. “Just enjoy what you guys have now—this is the good part,” I said. “It’ll all end tragically soon enough.” Done with doling out bad advice for the lovelorn, at least for the evening, I went home to an empty house and plotted out the rest of my weekend. For fun, I decided to make it more like a spa retreat. There would be a massage at the school down the street. There would later be some bubble bathing and candles. And of course, much, much solitude and contemplation. So the first thing I did the next morning was stock up on supplies. I wanted to get healthy type stuff so naturally—ha—I went to the health food store, and loaded my basket with such colon pleasers as lettuce, legumes, green tea, highfiber organic cereal, apples, yogurt and a mango. Cost of one small, semi-ripe mango at health food store: $4.49. Cost of three beatifically ripe, large mangoes dropped from the tree across the street at Kim’s house in Lahaina that were the perfect accompaniment to the vodka sodas we had at the Sly Mongoose after I got bored Day Two of aforementioned spa retreat: Priceless. Yes, that means free. Feel free to drop me a line or send me a dirty picture at www.myspace.com/holohologirl.
