I’m Lena Castles, the widow of David F. Castles. Who is David F. Castles? He was my husband and the daddy of our daughter who was five when the vehicle he was driving was involved in an accident at 1:11 a.m. on August 11, 2006. He died at the scene.

The accident happened on North Kihei Road where we set up a memorial site for him.

Why am I writing this today? A recent “LC Watch� article came out in Maui Time Weekly (“15 Days,� May 10, 2007). I felt like I was re-living the horrible days immediately following the accident. This article by Anthony Pignataro is about how the Liquor Commission slapped a 15-day liquor suspension on Lahaina’s Paradice Bluz, the club that Dave last visited before driving home to Kihei. Mr. Pignataro describes my husband as “a drunk.� He was a person that drank too much that night, but he was not “a drunk.� He was a family man and a professional businessman that was loved by many.

Remember‌ a life has been lost.

The family of “David F. Castles� still suffers.

My husband’s consumption of alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Drinking and driving was a choice he made. The club serving him 11 drinks was also a factor. The other factor that people don’t know about is that my husband came around the right bend on North Kihei Road that dark early morning and there was a vehicle parked on his shoulder facing him with headlights on. This vehicle was trying to tow another vehicle that was stuck in the sand. The police report states that seeing the headlights could have led Dave to think his lane of travel was to the right of the headlights, when it was actually to the left. The report states that Dave did not lose control of his vehicle. It’s important to me that people know that. He made a split second decision and went to the

right of the headlights facing him.

The result was Dave lost his life and in doing so, possibly saved the lives of those parked on his road shoulder with their headlights facing him on the turn.

David F. Castles was not “a drunk� and he did not lose control of his vehicle. He was my husband and “Daddy� to our little girl and we will love and miss him always.

While there’s no question Castles was drunk at the time of the accident—his blood alcohol content was more than four times the legal limit when he died—I can see now that it was insensitive of me to describe one of the charges leveled at Paradice Bluz as “knowingly permitting a drunk to remain on the premises,� which is the only instance in the story in which I use the phrase “a drunk.� I assure you it was not a swipe at your late husband, but a colloquialism I’ve used before to describe “an intoxicated person.� It won’t happen again.

Generosity permeates this week’s meeting. Sprint-Nextel Corp. is giving the police a fund grant, out of the goodness of its metaphorical heart.

The Overservice Paradox

What happened to Maui’s initiative process?

Not long ago I was talking with a friend of mine who works security at a local bar about the County of Maui’s liquor rules. Specifically, we were talking about the Liquor Control Adjudication Board’s recent decision to suspend Paradice Bluz’s liquor license for 15 days for overserving a customer who later died in an automobile accident.

-Bob Marley In the 2006 general election, less than half of Maui County’s 80,000 registered voters showed up at the polls, a turnout worse than Hawai‘i’s three other counties. With the impacts of growth and development yielding many vital issues, it’s perplexing why Hawaii voters are among the worst in the nation in participating in the Democratic process.

It’s possible the lackluster interest is an outgrowth of the old plantation mentality, where the lunas’ decisions weren’t questioned. Perhaps it’s a result of a mediocre state public education system. Or it could be that the system itself is too complex and dysfunctional, with Oahu-centric state decisions and a lack of real local representation through district voting for County Council seats.

One glimmer of hope happened at the polls in the 2002 election, when Maui County voters passed a Charter Amendment giving citizens a better chance to create or repeal an ordinance through the ballot initiative process.

Previously, the County Charter language regarding citizen initiatives made it the most onerous process of any state. Placing a measure on the ballot required collecting signatures from 20 percent of registered voters in just 30 days. Not surprisingly, no one attempted putting an initiative on the ballot.

The 2002 amendment to the charter changed the requirements to collecting signatures of 20 percent of actual— not registered—voters within 180 days. For example, there were 38,980 county voters in last November’s election, so that means 7,796 signatures would be required to put a proposed ordinance on the 2008 ballot.

A group looking to reform medical marijuana legislation, Maui County Citizens for Democracy In Action (MCCFDIA), has already begun their efforts to register voters and collect signatures for next year’s general election. A similar attempt, begun in February 2006, fell short of acquiring the amount of needed signatures, and encountered some unexpected obstacles along the way.

Taking the initiative finding no County Council members willing to sponsor a decriminalization bill or even consider expanding the allotment system for some 700 medical marijuana patients on Maui so they could grow sufficient quantities of marijuana for their own use.

In 2006, the groups followed the County Clerk’s rules by filing an affidavit from five qualified voters, each of whom also trained as a volunteer voter registrar.

All were medical marijuana patients.

Signature collection headquarters was the WowWee Maui Kava Bar on Dairy Road, where they set up a table 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

When the illness of two patients kept them homebound, the county ruled that only the original five could collect signatures, with no one else allowed to assist.

Though the group spent big bucks on radio and newspaper advertising, as well as on a concert at Baldwin Beach Park, they fell short of achieving their goal of eight to 10 thousand signatures.

Daryl Scott is a Mana‘o Radio DJ, a medical marijuana patient and one of the original petitioners. He said it is difficult enough to obtain a license, as patients must pay out of pocket to see one of the few Maui physicians willing to prescribe marijuana for medical needs.

Some of those who have obtained a license to grow for their own consumption have been hassled by police, he said. But he also questioned why the licensees are registered with the state Narcotics Enforcement Division of the Department of Public Safety, and not with the Department of Health.

“It’s a health issue,” Scott said. “Not a criminal issue.”

Indeed, he felt that fear of what would become of “the list” was the prevailing reason why many people wouldn’t sign

the petition.

“It was paranoia,” Scott said, “even though we were simply asking Mauians to be part of a democratic process.”

He noted that then-Mayor Alan Arakawa was the only politician to sign, not because he chose to support the proposed legislation, but because he believed in the process of bringing the issue to voters at the polls.

In addition to starting earlier this time around, medicinal marijuana advocates have brought in freshman state representative Joe Bertram, III (D, South Maui) to help promote voter registration. Bertram said that as part of their marketing plan, MCCFDIA and PWT will be partnering with a non-partisan coalition known as Citizens Action Network (CAN), similar to the Citizens Action League he worked with as a youth in California. Their goal is to change Hawai‘i’s reputation for having see INITIATIVE, page 11

The board’s reasoning behind such a harsh punishment—Paradice Bluz had no priors, and typical first time offenses for overservice can bring between $2,000 and $6,000 in fines—was simply that the club never cut off and ejected the increasingly intoxicated customer. And this was my friend’s point: a bar that tosses someone who they tag as being drunk can’t be prosecuted for overservice later if that customer gets into an accident or arrested for driving under the influence.

This is logical and would seem to be the intent of the county’s liquor rules, but there’s at least one disturbing example of the LC going after a club that did toss an intoxicated customer.

In February 2005, bouncers at Moose McGillycuddy’s in Lahaina watched one customer who seemed to be intoxicated. When they confirmed to their satisfaction that he was intoxicated, they threw him out. A little while later the customer got into a minor traffic accident in a nearby parking lot and was arrested for driving under the influence.

That December, the LC hauled Moose’s before the Adjudication Board for alleged overservice, even though club security had removed the intoxicated customer from the premises. Moose’s pled not guilty, and though they were completely exonerated following a multi-hour trial, the club had to spend a considerable sum on legal fees for a case that should never have been brought in the first place.

NO BONES ABOUT IT Bad news this week for the big developers. Looks like the good ol’ days of just building whatever you wanted on top of ancient Hawaiian burial grounds are long gone. According to the May 24 Honolulu Star-Bulletin, a lot of development and even redevelopment projects are facing “costly delays” because of archeological discoveries made during construction. The standard operating procedure these days is to stop the dozers whenever bones start appearing on site and call in state burial council officials. Remedies range from reburying the bones elsewhere or even redesigning the project to accommodate the graves—like the Ritz-Carlton had to do in Kapalua a few years ago. WEDNESDAY, May 23 Considering the Who’s Who list of state and local power brokers that appears in today’s Associated Press story “Judge rules business campaign contributions not limited to $1,000,” it’s a wonder The Maui News chose to run it on page A4, sandwiched between three other stories, the obituaries and a big photo of the Kamole Water Treatment Plant. We have, in order of appearance: Maui Circuit Court Judge Joseph Cardoza, the guy who decided that a recent state Campaign Spending Commission rule limiting corporate contributions to just $1,000 went too far; Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares—the 2006 candidate whose campaign first ran into trouble last year when the Spending Commission ruled it had improperly accepted contributions in excess of $1,000; William Crockett— Tavares’ attorney (and former husband of Governor Linda Lingle) who argued the case before Cardoza;

THURSDAY, May 24 Speaking of being better late than never, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) just announced they’re beefing up their safety inspections of helicopter air tours throughout the state, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser. As expected, industry people point to the hundreds of thousands of people who fly air tours throughout the state every year and don’t die as evidence that there doesn’t need to be any increased safety regulation, while officials at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) point to a disturbing spate of helicopter tour accidents in the last couple years, including a recent fatal crash on Kauai, an accident investigators say might have been preventable. While greater attention to safety—be it increased inspection, more stringent procedures or less use of the Hibachi while airborne—is seldom a bad thing, why must we always wait until after people have died before asking questions about safety?

things, especially given that the carbonbased life form currently occupying the Oval Office chose to wait until the Washington Post ran a devastating series on the squalor and misery that permeated Walter Reed Army Hospital, which cares for a great many of our wounded soldiers and veterans before doing anything about it—an especially grievous act of negligence given the fact that the war had been raging for more than three years when the story broke. But Inouye’s reasoning is questionable on another level—remember, back in 2002 Clinton voted in favor of invading and occupying Iraq, and today walks a very thin line by refusing to say that vote was a mistake. Of course, cagey Inouye already seems to have accounted for the fact that the party faithful may be more interested in what Clinton did five years ago than her presentday assurances: “My support for Hillary Clinton does not take away from, or speak any less of, the other Democratic candidates,” Inouye also said in his statement.

SUNDAY, May 27 Looks like we have to add invasive algae to the ever-growing list of problems our island is facing. And, as is usually the cases with these things, we’re at fault. According to a story in today’s Maui News, there’s a correlation between the algae and wastewater injection wells that pump treated sewage deep under ground. But don’t worry—we can treat sewage in a more coralfriendly way, though it will cost county residents a bit more. By a “bit more,” I mean “$30 million to $40 million” to build a new effluent-transmission pipe to golf courses, which use the treated wastewater to irrigate the links. This is logical—so logical in fact that we have to ask why as an island in the middle of the Central Pacific we weren’t

doing this before, coral die-out or not.

MONDAY, May 28 What is it those pro-war types always say to make us life-long civilians feel small and selfish? Oh yes: “Freedom isn’t free.” Of course, they always say it with the steadfast assertion that our brave soldiers and veterans made this country—which last year sold more arms to war-fighting nations around the world than anyone else—“free.”

But as the creepy, Orwellian story “At work, free speech has a price” published in today’s Advertiser makes clear, most of the U.S. isn’t free at all. “[W]ith limited exceptions, there’s nothing to keep your employer from firing you or taking other disciplinary action for what you say at the water cooler, in a company newsletter, or even on your own personal blog,” the paper reported. Now the good news is that collective bargaining agreements—brought to you by unions, who have also given workers grievance hearings and week-ends—make clear that management can only fire labor for “just cause.” Unfortunately, the bad news is that in today’s American privatesector workplace, collective bargaining protects a mere eight percent of workers. “A lot of people think they’re protected by the First Amendment in cases where they’re not,” attorney and labor specialist David Williams of Wilmington, Delaware said in the article. Happy Memorial Day!

Bertram also believes that Hawai‘i lacks the most basic type of representation, as the only state in the U.S. that lacks town government.

“We need district voting,” he said.

“Kauai and the Big Island have it. Our argument against it has been the lower population of Hana, Molokai and Lanai, and that bigger population areas, such as Kihei, would mean we wind up with a council of maybe 15 members. But we need to find a way.”

Bertram also noted that the state legislature is “too complex, too obtuse and hinders participation. Everything is crammed into four months, things happen too fast, and bills get lost on the crossover from one house to the other. It’s dysfunctional.” He also noted that Wyoming, a state of similar size to Hawai‘i, has a “unicameral” system, with just one legislative assembly.

In this year’s legislative session, Bertram introduced House Concurrent Resolution 10, “Requesting the Mayor and the Council of Maui County to implement various measures regarding medical marijuana in the County of Maui.” He also was the sponsor of House Bill 493, which sought to amend existing Hawai‘i laws on medical marijuana use and cultivation to mirror less stringent measures adopted by the state of Oregon.

Bertram said at least one veteran legislature took him aside and said that while he understood he might be passionate about the marijuana issue, he had also better think about getting reelected.

“What’s more important,” Bertram asked rhetorically. “Dealing with important issues or getting reelected?”

Hence the need for citizen-sponsored ballot initiatives. They allow government to address hot-button issues like cane-burning and rampant development without council members

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD needing to worry about lining up against the island’s power brokers.

But even as amended by voters in 2002, the Maui County ballot initiative process has its limitations. Initiative power does not extend to measures concerning budgetary or property tax issues, appointment of employees, issuance of bonds or any appropriation of money. In his nine-page analysis of the process back in 2002, University of Hawai‘i Professor Dr. Lee Altenberg referred to the limitations as the “Sandbox Clause.”

“This clause says that when it comes to money—how much is collected, how it is spent, what jobs it may be used for—the people are not to be trusted to decide about it directly, but all the powers shall go to the politicians,” Altenberg wrote.

“Because power over money is a fundamental power of government, by denying that power to the voter, the voter is ‘kept in the sandbox’ and left to play with less decisive matters.”

Altenberg described this section of the Charter’s Article on Initiative as “the embodiment of the ‘plantation paternalism’ that kept Maui citizens powerless for decades.” In California—a state renowned for the scope of its ballot initiatives— Altenberg found that citizens could propose any statute that the legislature can enact.

Once a citizen initiative has reached the ballot, a simple majority of voters can make it law. Of course, it may not end there.

That’s because the County Charter also contains a provision that “Any ordinances enacted pursuant to this article may be amended or repealed by ordinance enacted after one (1) year from the date of certification, but only by the affirmative vote of at least two-thirds of the council membership.”

We can hope that the turnout of voters necessary to pass a reasonable ballot measure would also be sufficient to elect a County Council majority that would not seek to overturn such citizen initiatives. In a democratic system where one person equals one vote, that part is up to each of us. MTW

More than 250 owners brought more than 1,500 camels to be judged by such standards, said one organizer (according to a Reuters dispatch), as “the nose should be long and droop down” and “the ears should stand back, and the neck should be long” and “the hump should be high, but slightly to the back.” Prizes included more than 70 SUVs.

YOUR GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Among the long-term disabilities that have been drawing compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (at a time when the returning wounded from Iraq and Afghanistan are meeting bureaucratic delays in getting their own disabilities properly compensated): 124,000 veterans receiving monthly checks because of hemorrhoids (according to a March Scripps Howard News Service report) and “thousands” of veterans since 1972 having received regular monthly checks to cover venereal diseases that they contracted on their own time while on active duty, including those treated for depression at having caught the disease (according to an investigation by the same reporter, published in May).

The dispatch ran worldwide and was the most popular story on the BBC News’ Web site for 2006. It swallowed up thousands of chunks of sugar cane in its maw, and by swirling them through a bath of warm water for nearly an hour, extracted an unprecedented 97% of the sugar from the cane. A

s news of the discovery of the Varroa jacobsoni mite in honeybee hives across Oahu rippled throughout the state, waves of fear rushed through the Maui’s honeybee industry. First discovered in Manoa and Makiki in early April, the parasites have since been found ravaging honeybee colonies all over Oahu.

Tiny, blood-sucking vampires, the mites feed on the blood of honeybee adults, larvae and pupae, causing emerging bees to be deformed, weakening adult bees and slowly sapping the strength and vigor from a hive. Transferred from hive to hive, these pests threaten not only the health of managed and feral honeybee hives and this sweet industry, but also the health of many of our food crops.

“Looks like we’re screwed,” was Maui beekeeper Dennis Morihiro’s summation of the news. A commercial beekeeper on Maui for the past 20 years, Morihiro owns Tropical Apiary Products of Maui with his daughter Courtney.

First discovered in bee colonies in Wisconsin and Florida in 1987, within a year the parasite appeared in 12 states and has since spread throughout the continental U.S. The parasites have since destroyed many beekeepers’ hives and wild honeybee colonies across the mainland.

Rapidly spreading worldwide like a flame in a dry field, Hawai‘i was one of the few places where the mite was not found—until now.

M

aui County apiarists are somewhat of a secret society.

Beekeepers are not registered or certified in the state. As frequent victims of agricultural theft, beekeepers protect their hives and equipment from bee bandits by not making their locations public information. But Dennis and Courtney agreed to speak with me.

Down an old Kahului alley, sized for a 67-inch Model T Ford, is Dennis Morihiro’s house—the same one he grew up in. Stacks of disassembled beekeeping frames, assorted bee keeping equipment and straggler honeybees buzzing around pretty much give away the location. Inside, the three of us sat at the kitchen table adorned with a bottle of their Christmas berry honey glowing amber in the morning light.

“These mites will change beekeeping in Hawai‘i forever,” Dennis told me as he described the arduous steps needed to control mites once they infect managed hives.

Mitigation is expensive, labor-intensive and time-consuming, requiring regular and heavy application of pesticides.

And that means the end of organic honey.

Currently in Hawai‘i, the only permitted pesticide for killing mites is Apistan. But according to Neil Reimer, the Plant Pest Control Branch Chief with the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture, this is just a temporary band-aid. “Mites have developed resistance to Apistan on the mainland, and will also in Hawai‘i,” he said.

here is no question the varroa mite will have a devastating effect on feral honeybee populations. “The varroa mite will attack feral honeybees, too,” Reimer of the Department of Ag said. “The mite has killed about 95 percent of the feral honeybee colonies in the mainland.”

Knowing that honeybees are an introduced species—even considered an invasive species—many native Hawaiian plant experts don’t necessarily consider this bad news.

Honeybees, Apis mellifera, arrived on Oahu in the 1850’s.

Beekeeping became popular in the 1890’s, primarily to support the new cattle ranching industry. Needing feed to sustain large cattle populations, ranchers identified kiawe as a good source of food. To increase kiawe bean yield, they established honeybee hives near ranching operations to promote pollination. The kiawe forests quickly spread due to the bees’ busy work.

Spreading invasive species is one reason native plant experts don’t necessarily support honeybees here. Another is that honeybees negatively impact native Hawaiian Hylaeus, or “yellow face” bee populations.

“While honeybees pollinate a few plants that were originally bird-pollinated, where the birds are now extinct or highly restricted, as far as Hawai‘i’s native species are concerned, honeybees are overwhelmingly bad for native ecosystems,” said Karl Magnacca, a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley and an expert on native Hawaiian Hylaeus.

“Hawai‘i’s native ‘yellow face’ bees are solitary bees and do not form colonies,” said Patrick Alridich, a graduate student at the Department of Zoology University of Hawai‘i, Manoa studying the pollination systems of dry forests on the Big Island. “Thankfully, this means the varroa mite won’t effect on native bees; the varroa mite is highly adapted to live in

varroa mite reaches the Valley Isle, the increased workload makes Dennis wonder if it’s worth staying in business.

“This is very scary,” Courtney nervously told me. “We feel helpless, like parents watching their kids fall down. You want to stop it, but you can’t.”

Maui County appears safe for now. In May, Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture Entomologists surveyed Morihiro’s hives and various apiaries on Molokai and found no varroa mites. While relieved, Dennis and Courtney have little faith the Department of Ag will be able to contain the mites on Oahu.

No one really knows how the mites first came to Oahu.

Infested ships and shipments of bees through Hawai‘i are possible sources, though state law does not allow the importation of bees or used beekeeping equipment. Anyone caught smuggling pays heavy fines. But there’s inadequate inspection for cargo coming into Hawai‘i and the federal government allows the trans-shipment of bees through Honolulu from areas like New Zealand, where the varroa mite is already well-established.

In the last decade, tourists have made it from the mainland to here with bees in their pockets. In response to the discovery of the varroa mite across Oahu, the Dept. of Ag’s Plant Quarantine Branch issued a quarantine order preventing the interisland movement of bees and beekeeping equipment.

“It only takes one infested bee to fly off from the shipment of packaged bees to create problems,” Courtney said. “There are many instances where people and packages are slipping through the cracks.”

the social conditions of honeybees. The females, depending on species, nest either in wood and twigs or in the ground. They do not make honey. They collect pollen that is used to line the nest and feed the young.”

Honeybees are nectar-robbers on a lot of native plants— they take the nectar without pollinating the plant.

“Honeybees have long tongues that can reach a lot deeper in a flower than the short-tongued native bees,” Magnacca said. “They also have stronger jaws and will cut a hole at the base of a flower that’s too long for their tongue, so they can still get at the nectar. The end result is that there’s nothing left for the native bees that would be doing the pollination.

“The Hylaeus almost never visit non-native plants,” he added. “If an area is dominated by aliens, you won’t find native bees. And they also seem to require multiple kinds of plants, so if there’s just a lot of ‘ohia or naupaka along with a bunch of alien plants—which is often the case in dry forest and coastal areas—you won’t find [native] bees even though those are two of their favorite flowers.”

This serves as another blatant reason to protect the last few intact endangered native Hawaiian ecosystems on Maui.

Anna Palomino, a native plant expert who owns Ho‘olawa Farms in Haiku, one of the island’s largest native plant nurseries, can attest to this. “I have observed honeybees on many natives such as ‘ohia, nehe, naio and a‘ali‘i,” she said.

Honeybees can also spread invasive plant species, which alters ecosystems. “Honeybees are doing a whole hell of a lot of pollination for bee-dependent invasive plants like strawberry guava,” Magnacca told me. “A lot of those are totally dependent on bee pollination in their native range, and probably wouldn’t be so weedy in Hawai‘i if honeybees weren’t around to pollinate them. On top of directly competing with native

bees for nectar and pollen, they also help destroy their habitat and replace it with one that only the honeybees can use.”

According to UH researcher Aldrich, habitat fragmentation and loss, decline of native plant populations, loss of wood boring beetles (for nests), introduced ungulates and introduced ants—basically the typical culprits for species decline on islands—have all contributed to the trouble facing native yellow face bees. Half of them are endangered or already extinct.

W

hile you can argue that the loss of the honeybees in Hawai‘i could have a positive effect on the native species and ecosystems, it’s also true that honeybees play a critical role in pollinating many of our food crops.

Honeybees are recognized as the single most important and efficient insect pollinators of food plants on earth.

Healthy bees are essential for crops that require honeybees for pollination.

Not only do honeybees efficiently pollinate invasive species like strawberry guava, miconia, kiawe and eucalyptus, they also efficiently pollinate strawberries, zucchini, cucumbers, melons, coffee, macadamia nuts, avocados, mangos, lillikoi and coconut, as well as many palms and flowers.

These crops depend on feral honeybees for propagation.

If the varroa mite makes it to Maui and infests our wild honeybee colonies, it’s possible we can say goodbye to a substantial portion of Maui’s agriculture industry. The alternative—as is now the case in the mainland where the mite has wiped-out the feral colonies—commercial hives will have to be loaded on trucks and driven around to pollinate agriculture crops.

“The only way to keep them [the mites] out of Maui County is to do 100 percent inspection of all inter-island vessels for swarms of bees or used bee equipment including all cargo shipments, cruise ships and the Superferry,” Dennis Morihiro said. He added that on two occasions he’s had to remove swarms of bees from the decks of inter-island cruise ships. MTW

More than Fair Pub Fare You can find it at the Dog & Duck About a second after I sat down at the bar I knew I was in trouble.

Same old story: I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to eat. I’d seen the menu at the Dog & Duck Pub in Kihei before—a few times, in fact— but I just couldn’t decide on what to order. I ordered a beer, sighed, and just stared at the menu.

Open M-Fr., 11 a.m.-1:30 a.m.; Sa-Su, 8 a.m.-1:30 a.m. $ “That’s really good,” a pretty blonde sitting next to me eventually said, pointing to the words “Rosemary Chicken Pie.” “I was looking at that,” I said, which was true, though in all honesty I was looking at everything on the menu.

I’ve been led astray before by listening to pretty blondes, but this one was on the money. The chicken pie perfectly filled a deep glass bowl.

The crust was firm, but not thick, and held more than enough chicken, carrots, peas and that wonderful

chicken pie ooze to satisfy any appetite for such olde worlde pub fare. The dish also came with a small salad made from some greens topped with a dark vinaigrette dressing.

Dog & Duck is a fairly close approximation to an Irish pub. It’s built out of the old Mexican restaurant Ramon’s in the Kihei Triangle, and it still shows off that place’s faux brick walls and Spanish arches. But it does offer a good number of bar stools, lots of beer choices, plenty of football on the telly as well as what looks to be a strict adherence to the local tavern tradition of ensuring that the bartenders and servers look as though they posed in last month’s Maxim.

Where Dog & Duck breaks with its Irish and U.K. cousins is in food selection—it’s far tastier and more substantial than the traditional crap pubs offer.

For instance, Dog & Duck’s take on Bangers & Mash is quite appealing.

The sausage is tasty, the mashed potatoes creamy and the green peas are excellent. It’s not quite as overwhelming as Mulligan’s on the Blue in Wailea, but as far as bar food is concerned, it’s hard to find better.

Their chicken sandwich—which comes with salad or chips (what those across the pond call “crisps”)—is more

than decent, especially when slathered in mustard. The potato wedges will put more than enough fried starchy goodness in your stomach to soak up that Guinness, and their Irish-style bruschetta—served with asparagus spears instead of tomatoes—is uncommonly tasty.

They also serve daily specials that seem too good for the place—seared ahi over rice and pasta, most notably, though they once offered a very good ham and cheese melt.

“You thinking about dessert?” bartender Katie Healy asked me when I finished my Rosemary chicken pie. The choices for the evening were Chocolate Decadence Cake and Bailey’s Cheesecake, which was topped with your choice of chocolate sauce or blueberries and whipped cream.

Had to go with the cheesecake topped with blueberries. Though I told her to leave the whipped cream off the cheesecake. What arrived a few minutes later was a trim slice of sweet heaven.

“You know, all our desserts are fatfree and calorie-free,” Healy said just before I dug in. If only it were true.

Superferry Protest!

Friday (June 1) from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. along Ka‘ahumanu Ave. in Kahului [CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE] Yes, folks, there is going to be a Superferry. It’s scheduled to start operations sometime this summer. According to the Hawai`i Superferry website (www.hawaiisuperferry.com), the boat—there is just one, remember—will arrive at Kahului Harbor each day at 9:30 a.m. and depart at 11 a.m. Superferry officials expect 110 cars and 400 passengers each day, but they insist traffic around the harbor won’t be a problem.

“Based on independent traffic studies, we have scheduled arrivals at each port to avoid the busiest traffic times,” states a “Just the Facts” release put out by Hawai`i Superferry. “Hawaii Superferry staff will manage the arrival and departure of vehicles to facilitate traffic flow on adjacent roads.”

Sound reassuring? Perhaps, but the Pacific Whale Foundation and Maui Tomorrow aren’t so sure. In fact, they—and about 200 volunteer cars—will test that assurance this Friday on Ka`ahumanu Ave. around the harbor. Should definitely be something to see. For more information, call 249-8811.

Saturday (June 2), 8:30 a.m. at Mauna Lei Arboretum [HIKE/HOLIDAY] It’s National Trails Day and Maui Land and Pineapple Co., Inc., has been needing some good press lately.

Apparently, the thought of yet another 18-hole golf course, massive millionaire estates and who knows what else (considering they never released any plans) appeals to you about as much as it does me. But (thanks to all the public out-cry) they’re negotiating with the County now over the disputed land, and the incorporated company has donated a lot of the stuff in the past. To bring home how good they really are there’s going to be a guided hike in the Mauna Lei Arboretum. That’s, like, “Flemmings,” I think. Na Ala Hele (the trail making Division of Forestry and Wildlife program) is partnering with you-know-who to show off the goodness. Hikers will want to bring boots (who knows what kind of pesticides got left in the soil), sunscreen (because global warming is a reality), and lunch (even environmentalists eat something). Oops—try to go next year folks; this event is booked. But hey, it’s not too late to celebrate this great holiday.

Alison’s “hottie” status doesn’t stop her from making tenuous peace with Ben’s unkempt appearance and laidback sense of humor after she discovers that she’s pregnant with his child.

Having just been promoted to an onscreen television interviewer, against the wishes of a comically catty coworker, Alison tries to keep her preg-

nancy a secret from her employers.

Interviews with stars like James Franco (playing himself) go screwy as Alison’s bouts of morning sickness inelegantly disrupt the videotaped proceedings. The blending of real-life celebrity culture into the story lends a distinctly L.A. milieu that’s funny for its blushing behind-the-scenes truthfulness. Apatow deftly moves, bends and blurs class division judgments in a haze of Southern Californian consciousness.

Compatibility is more than skin deep as Ben attempts to step up to the plate of responsibility for Alison in spite of his unemployed status and lazy habits. Ben hedges his bets by lunching with his amiable dad (Harold Ramis) to ask for advice, only to get a “roll-with-the-punches” answer that may explain his dad’s record of multiple divorces.

The snickers go through the roof more than a few times, not the least of which is during an attempted love-making session where Ben’s queasiness about bothering or “hurting” the baby makes for a defining moment of weighty humor, so to speak.

The movie swings between surprisingly uninhibited personal interactions and contextualizing scenes of public interactions where harsh opinions are expressed.

Ben’s buddies form a peanut gallery of advice and information that would send steam from the ears of Alison’s naysayer, control-freak sister Debbie (Leslie Mann) if she ever heard them. Debbie presents the movie’s essential antagonist, and we know this for certain when she drags Ben and Alison along to spy on Pete, Debbie’s

Night and Day A dual exhibit of silk and shadows One day last week, I sort of traveled the world. I dined on Mexican food (guacamole tacos at Fiesta Time), drank Italian wine (Chianti Classico), went to a French film (Avenue Montaigne at the Castle Theater), and saw a glorious Hawaiian sunset on my way to an art exhibit by two JapaneseAmerican women.

Akiko Kotani and Kaori Ukaji. Both artists share a passion for graphite and textiles—and seemingly, solitude—but their perspectives are like night and day.

After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Hawai‘i, Honolulu, in 1962, Kotani got her Masters at Tyler School of Art and later became Professor Emerita of Art for 21 years at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylania. Since then she’s exhibited mostly on the East Coast, with a few shows in Europe and Hawai‘i.

Her current exhibit at the Schaefer International Gallery, called “SOLO: Drawings with Silk & Graphite,” is the section you’re likely to go to first as you enter the gallery. Her exhibit takes up two of the largest rooms in the gallery, filling them with light and an immense expanse of open space.

Kotani’s work is displayed mainly by linen scrims and silk organza panels hanging from the ceilings and slightly in front of walls, casting shadows of thread lines depicting the abstractions of wind and clouds and the slopes of the Andes.

There is also a series of abstract but emotive graphite drawings on paper of the Fields, Clouds and Rains at Annaghmakerig.

When I walked through these rooms (I was fortunate enough to visit on an unpopulated day) I felt like I was walking alone in an open field, stopping

occasionally to look up at the clouds, feel the wind in my hair and the first droppings of rain on my face. Obviously, it was silent in the gallery, but the effect of Kotani’s work was quieting as well.

But perhaps it’s my darker nature that drew me more towards the Ukaji side of the gallery.

There, Ukaji’s exhibit, “Essentially Empty,” explores the artist’s inner landscape with somewhat existential influences.

But once the room cleared of people, I was able to look again at the work with an open mind. Instead of feeling crowded by its border, I could follow the length of the paper with my eyes and breathe.

It suddenly seemed to flow like a river that was boundless. I felt liberated, as though I had taken another journey of my own. MTW
