LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR THE LANGUAGE OF SIGNS

OF COURSE!

(The following two letters are in response to Caeriel Crestin’s May 29, 2008 edition of Sign Language) It seems you are a little off this week Mr./Mrs. Astrologer [Caeriel Crestin]. What if you do go after all the things in your life that are important to you and they never respond or just do not work out? Do you decide to accept life as it comes and do the best with what you have and move on to make it better? For me it is the later, but it seems we cannot control what we have no control over, but never as a Libra have I ever let life pass me by. I am not ranking on your horoscopes, I actually find them very amusing and entertaining from very far away, but this week you couldn’t be more off. Maybe the moon, stars, sun and planets are not lining up as they should in Maui. -Amused from across the Pacific, via Mauitime.com

(The following letter is in response to Anthony Pignataro’s May 29, 2008 story “Night Kayaking”) Go somewhere calmer next time. If you cruise more south the wind will die and it wont be so rough. Just look for flatter water. Not all nights are calm down by Makena but most are. -Fitz, via Mauitime.com

I am amazed at how accurate your readings are and look forward to reading them each week. Thank you. -Upcountry girl, via Mauitime.com

NO FUELING (The following two letters are in response to Rob Parson’s May 29, 2008 story “Who’s Fueling Who?”) Why isn’t this discussion including empowering people to generate food and power at their homes? Photovoltaics, wind and water systems all have systems applicable for efficient home use. Why does the pervasive model always have power (literally!) centralized and in the hands of a few wealthy corporations? -Bodhi Be, via Mauitime.com When Hawai‘i’s tourism revenues drop due to increasing jet fuel costs, Hawai‘i will need its valuable arable land to produce food. Importing food becomes much more difficult when tourism revenues decrease. Second generation biofuels do not use arable land. Algae and cellulotic biomass are the way to go. Don’t waste time with palm oil. It’s unsustainable given the likely financial situation Hawai‘i faces in the near future. Please consider this. -Hawaii Lover, via Mauitime.com

ANOTHER UNEASY WRITER (The following letter is in response to Kate Bradshaw’s May 15, 2008 story “Uneasy Rider: When will people get to bike down the volcano?”) It’s interesting how people have a hard time taking responsibility for their choices and instead choose to find an excuse for their mishaps. Has anyone else noticed how the participants of this activity who come back without incidence rave about their experience and the whiners are always the ones who can’t accept that they chose to do an activity that like much of life poses risks? My family and I have done the downhill ride with one of the self-paced companies many times and consider the activity as one of the best on Maui. I hope that the community and the powers that be can find a way to balance the needs of all and at the same time keep this option available. One of the biggest problems in my opinion is the fact that most of the vehicles traveling along the same roadways are exceeding the speed limit. Maybe if the speed limits were enforced you would solve a huge part of the problem. As with any community issue in a tourist-based economy, it’s about working together. -Andrea Vaughn, via Mauitime.com

If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar—that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. We also reserve the right to edit your letters. Send your letters to the editor via e-mail (letters@mauitime.com), regular mail (Letters to the Editor, Maui Time Weekly, 33 N. JEN RUSSO: “there is a honking competition in bumper to bumper traffic on Market st wailuku” [2:21 p.m., May 29, 2008] Text “follow jenrusso” to 40404 to get regular Twitter messages like this one from General Manager Jen Russo sent directly to your cell phone.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD The U.S. military operates a beachfront vacation site for its personnel worldwide and their families at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, with $42-a-night air-conditioned suites, surfing, boat rides, golf course, bowling alley and even a gift shop. One T-shirt for sale reads, “The Taliban Towers at Guantanamo Bay, the Caribbean’s Newest 5-star Resort.” News of the facility was not widely reported until a British lawyer who represents 28 of the nearly 300 detainees housed there described it to London’s Daily Mail in May.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS Police in Fort Myers, Fla., were called to Royal Palm Exceptional School in April and wound up arresting eight-year-old Deshawn for punching his female teacher in the face, leaving several bruises. Said Deshawn’s grandmother, Dorothy Williams, when interviewed by WBBH-TV: “He gets very upset, and he loves to hit… If he was overpowering her that much, I feel like she shouldn’t be in that line of work.”

AMERICA IN DECLINE One of the Internet’s successful Web sites (10 million page views a month, with $500,000 in ads from companies including Verizon, McDonald’s and General Motors) is a site that merely reports on what celebrities’ babies are wearing, in that so many mothers are apparently obsessed with mimicking those clothing choices for their own tots. A May Wall Street Journal feature said sometimes the site’s posting a photo of a celebrity baby incites a nationwide run on what it’s wearing.

WORKPLACE CULTURE Salesman Chad Hudgens filed a lawsuit in January against his former Salt Lake City employer, charging that the boss and a “motivational trainer” used, as a “team-building” exercise, what was essentially the controversial “torture” practice of “waterboarding.” The boss allegedly said that if salesmen tried as hard to close deals as they’re trying to breathe during the simulated drowning, sales would soar.

MOST CONVOLUTED BUSINESS PLAN Adolfo Martinez, 33, and Mark Anderson, 26, were indicted for fraud in Las Cruces, N.M., in April, accused of passing forged checks. Their plan was to buy Domino’s pizzas with the checks, then have one of the men put on a Pizza Hut shirt and resell the pizzas, by the slice, in a local park or at stores, even though the pizzas were still being carried around in the Domino’s boxes.

HOT BRA Triumph International, the Japanese women’s underwear company, released its latest publicity-seeking creation in May: the solar-powered bra, with enough exposed panels to power an iPod or cell phone. Other Triumph specials include a baseball bra (with fielder’s-mitt-shaped cups) and a heated bra (with microwavable gel pads to warm the cups).

ROBREPORT

Campaign Challenge

Drunk on Power

Kai Nishiki is ready to make a difference My dad felt he was protecting Maui to be enjoyed for its natural beauty. He instilled that responsibility in us. -Kai Nishiki ith a mere month and a half before the candidate-filing deadline in the Maui County 2008 election, the campaign season has been uncharacteristically quiet. While we’ve been witnessing a resounding hubbub on replacing President George W. Bush, there’s been barely a murmur on the home front. Why haven’t more local citizens announced their candidacy to challenge incumbent elected leaders? Is the populace satisfied with the incumbents’ job performance? Or are they just complacent? Are people assuming it’s just too difficult to beat an incumbent, or are they on “Maui Time”—content to do things at the last minute? Eight of the nine incumbent Maui County Council members are up for reelection (after 10 years, Riki Hokama of Lanai is termed-out), as are all six Maui state House Representatives and two of the three state Senators. There has been speculation that former Council Member Wayne Nishiki will try to regain a council seat. There’s also the possibility that former Mayor Alan Arakawa will try for a council or a state seat. Still, things look very good for the council incumbents. The last time incumbent council members lost their bids for re-election was back in 2000. That year Arakawa took the Kahului residency seat over Mike Davis; Mike Molina grabbed the Haiku-Paia-Makawao seat away from John Wayne Enriques; and Jo Anne Johnson barely beat West Maui’s Dennis Nakamura by 125 votes. Molina and Johnson had run unsuccessfully in 1998, and Arakawa had previously served on the County Council, before his bid for Mayor fell short that same year. But to date, just a handful of candidates have announced their intentions. Activist-extraordinaire Lucienne de Naie of Huelo will launch a second campaign for the Hana Council spot. Former state house candidate and Deputy Planning Director Don Couch is running for Michelle Anderson’s South Maui council seat. First-timer Susan “Netra” Halpern will run for the Kahului seat currently held by Joe Pontanilla. In the legislative races, former

council candidate Rev. Natalie “Tasha” Kama is challenging Rep. Joe Souki’s long tenure in the 8th District, stretching from Waikapu to Waihe‘e. Summer Starr has set her sights on the 12th District Upcountry seat occupied by Rep. Kyle Yamashita. One other declared candidate, though a first-timer, carries a familiar name and legacy. Kai Nishiki is the eldest of six children of veteran council member and watchdog Wayne Nishiki. She is the mother of three children of her own, ages five, seven and nine. She worked in her father’s office as a legislative aide in the early 1990’s, then moved to Oahu for 10 years for school and work, eventually starting both a business and a family. Now living in Haiku, she wants to serve on Maui County Council, seeing her role as a gift to her kids and a responsibility to the community. Kai and I talked story on a sunny Sunday afternoon. She brought fresh-baked loaves of banana bread, which she currently provides to the Farmer’s Market and health food store run by her dad and brother in West Maui. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: What prompted you to run for the Paia-Haiku-Makawao County Council seat this year? KAI NISHIKI: I’ve been inspired by the presidential race and people’s sincere desire for positive change. There’s a growing dissatisfaction with the current leadership. Working as council aide to my dad after graduating from Baldwin High [in 1989] sparked my interest. I realized it really matters who’s in there. Driving around Maui after being away for 10 years, I found myself telling my kids about

how things used to be—the old dirt road to Makena, Suda Store, when it didn’t take 20 minutes to drive Ka‘ahumanu Avenue in Kahului. I feel a strong responsibility to preserve and protect Maui. It is our kuleana. Now that my kids are a bit older, I’m ready to pursue my passion and serve the public. What did you gain as the daughter of a county council member who has been an outspoken advocate for slow growth and protection of our natural resources? Growing up, people were constantly coming up and talking with my dad about important issues. It made me and my brothers and sisters aware of changes see KAI, page 12

Apparently, the Maui County Department of Liquor Control staff has so much time on their hands that they’re spending their days combing through the pages of this very publication looking for liquor licensees that they can punish for buying ads that use shortened versions of their trade names. I wish I was kidding. Here are two examples: In the May 22, 2008 issue of Maui Time, Charley’s in Paia purchased an ad. Since that establishment’s official name is Charley’s Restaurant, the LC issued a notice of violation. And in our May 15, 2008 issue, Jawz Tacos purchased an ad. Since that establishment’s officially recognized trade name is Jawz FishTacos, the LC issued a notice of violation. This is nothing more than a chickenshit campaign to intimidate, harass and bully the small businesses that support this paper. It is unprofessional and petty and it needs to end. Now. Today. Immediately. Yes, the law—as narrow and myopic as it is—is on the LC’s side. The apparent statute governing these actions by the LC can be found in Section 08-101-36 of the Rules of the Liquor Commission of the County of Maui. Paragraph (c) states, “Use of any trade name without prior approval of the commission is prohibited. Any publication or advertising or sign with an unauthorized trade name will be considered prima facie evidence of use of such trade name.” Whoop-de-fucking-do. Are there no more minor decoys to send into establishments trying to get bartenders to serve them booze? Are there no more intoxicated people in the jails to ask about their drinking habits? How on earth is any of this just? This apparent decision that the LC needs to throw the book at licensees for the slightest, most ridiculous rule violation possible is not merely a waste of the department’s enormous cash reserves—it’s a mockery of whatever loose thread of justice once hung in the LC’s now-calcified offices. And it shows that, more than ever, the LC is seriously drunk on its own power.

-Anthony Pignataro

You really scored big stealing a member of my limited family—my dog. Coco was my closest friend and now she’s gone. If you take something like that from someone then you’re the worst kind of thief. If you steal, you lie and if you lie, you cheat. I hope your friends see this and realize you would do them like you did me in a second if you thought it would serve your needs. I offer a reward for Coco, a happy, friendly brownish black Staffordshire terrier with an amazing white lightning bolt marking on the back of her neck and cute little white “socks” on all fours. Rewards are given as a payment for good pono. Your friends should realize that you are despicable and they should take advantage of my reward and do to you what you would do to them if your sociopathic mind ever gets a chance. You can’t be trusted. The reward is “no questions asked”—I just want my dog safe, sound and back in my ‘ohana.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

the end where North Kihei Road merges with South Kihei Road, two telephone poles sitting in the middle of the highway. Apparently during the realignment of that intersection workers just paved around the poles and left them where they stood, which is now right in the middle of traffic. Sure, they’re wrapped in yellow caution tape and are surrounded by orange plastic barriers, but their presence somewhat detracts from the overall magnificence of the road.

THURSDAY, May 29 You know they built the giant Mackinac Bridge in Michigan in just four years? What? I’m just saying.

FRIDAY, May 30

WEDNESDAY, May 28 Mokulele Highway is now open! Mokulele Highway is now open! After six years of construction and $87 million, Mokulele Highway is now four lanes instead of two. What a magnificent triumph of human engineering. Why, even the majestic Parthenon in Greece and the Great Pyramid in Egypt pale before such a feat. Did I mention that the highway now has four lanes? And that it goes all the way from Kihei to Kahului? What is that, seven miles? Astonishing! And to think that it took just six years to do all that. For obvious reasons, state officials–including Her Majesty, Governor Linda Lingle–were on hand at the opening to convey all the wonder and splendor of such an achievement. “The benefits of this project will enhance the overall quality of life for our Maui communities,” state Transportation Director Brennon Morioka said at yesterday’s official road-opening blessing, according to today’s Maui News. “Travel times and traffic congestion will be reduced, allowing motorists to spend less time on the road and more time at home with their families.” Yes, our families will win because Mokulele is now four lanes. With all this fanfare, I too decided to see the road— I had to experience its new pavement and wide-open lanes for myself. So I drove the road, from Kahului to Kihei, all by myself. It was thrilling! It was amazing! It was… kind of surprising to see, at

This column has long focused on what doesn’t work—not only because it’s important, but because it’s fun to write about—but right now I’m going to talk about my lunch, because today, unlike most other days, my lunch actually served to better the island. I ate over at Class Act, the ritzy second floor restaurant at Maui Community College (MCC). I gorged on a heaping plate of mac & cheese, rice, salad, grilled vegetables, mahi, roast beef cut so thin it wilted beneath a breath and rich, thick chocolate cake. The hook was that 13 Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC) inmates did all the food preparation and service. They were part of something called the Maui Culinary Boot Camp, a week-long class sponsored by Maui Economic Opportunity’s BEST Reintegration Program that seeks to give professional skills and experience to MCCC inmates. And I’m telling you—if they’re being graded on taste, then cut those inmates loose right now because they can really cook.

SATURDAY, May 31 Leave it to The Maui News’ Harry Eagar to provide Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. (HSF) with a boatload of super publicity. “The ferry Alakai has enjoyed calm seas for several weeks, and her owner Hawaii Superferry, also has enjoyed a peaceful period since getting Alakai back in service,” was how Eagar started his massive story yesterday titled “Smooth sailing at last.” Based pretty much exclusively on an interview with new HSF President Thomas Fargo, the story paints a stunningly rosy picture of Superferry’s last few weeks in operation: calm weather, new deals with commercial shippers and rental car companies and rising passenger loads—“between last Friday and Memorial Day, the ferry carried more than 5,500 passengers and 1,500 vehicles,” Eagar wrote. There was even this little boost: “Fargo said that the Superferry can be profitable even when

So beautiful... so deadly?

selling only half its 866 passenger seats.” Unfortunately, Eager didn’t dig into the numbers Fargo gave him, because even if that profitability statement is true, times are still very tough for the Superferry. According to a May 28 post on the Hawai`i Superferry Unofficial Blog (hisuperferry.blogspot.com), those super Memorial Day passenger and vehicle numbers aren’t all that super when you break them down. ‘[T]here were 14 one-way trips over that weekend,” the blog wrote, “so they averaged: 393 people per one-way trip and 107 vehicles per one-way which is Enough to cover just their fuel costs for those 4 days, NOT the rest of their expenses.” While definitely an improvement over what the ferry had been carrying, numbers like that— which remain below half capacity—are hardly smooth sailing.

SUNDAY, June 1 Woohoo! The Associated Press says May had the lowest number of U.S. military deaths in Iraq in the last four years. So that means we’re winning and can bring the troops home. Right?

MONDAY, June 2 Oh, joy: the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports today that a new Italian study has concluded that sunscreen is potentially bleaching 10 percent of the world’s coral. Of course, this is far from a universally held conclusion: “At this point, in terms of issues hurting the coral reef in Hawaii, I wouldn’t put sunscreen in the top three,” University of Hawai`i Professor Robert Richmond

told the paper. I don’t know if that reassures me or not.

TUESDAY, June 3 And that’s that. Seriously: this is the last entry I will write in Coconut Wireless. That’s because this issue is my last as Editor of Maui Time Weekly. After nearly five years scrambling for dining stories, fielding angry phone calls, thinking up at least partially witty film photo captions, spotting far too many typographical errors after the paper went to press and occasionally succeeding in getting a story into the paper that I was not only proud of but also elicited positive reader interest, I’m hanging up my official editing hat (it’s sponsored by Monsanto!). I’ve enjoyed the job, and will always appreciate the opportunity Publisher Tommy Russo gave me, but it’s time for me to move on. So I’ll be going to Honolulu to eek out an existence as a freelance writer. No word yet on who’ll be taking over here—I gave two months notice, but you know how hard it is to find good people on Maui—so Associate Editor Starr Begley will now be Interim Editor. Both she and Calendar Editor Jessica Armstrong have tough jobs ahead of them, and I expect you to treat them with all the respect you gave me. Because trust me: they deserve it. Anthony Pignataro will still be available in Twitter form. Go to http://twitter.com/apignataro or text “follow apignataro” to 40404. MTW

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

WE’RE DOOMED Big state-sponsored pro-tourism public relations spending or not, rising fuel prices will cut the number of visitors headed to Hawai`i this summer, the May 23 Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported. “The downturn in April’s visitor numbers are a sign of what’s coming, and it could get worse,” Jack E. Richards, the boss of Pleasant Holidays, told the paper. “If oil goes up to $150 a barrel, the airlines will park their airplanes.” Considering that oil is today hovering around $130 a barrel, I’d say that Richards won’t have to wait very long to see his prediction come true. What’s worse is that the June 2 Star-Bulletin reported that state hotel occupancy fell 1.4 percent in April—a downturn apparently attributable to the recent airline industry shutdowns. On Maui the drop was just one percent (hotel occupancy in April 2007 was 71.7 percent, but 70.7 percent this April), but the overall trend is undeniable. And this means those who own big resorts like Makena and Kapalua will be looking at a long, hot summer, and not in that Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward kind of way.

GOOD RIDDANCE And Goodfellow Brothers rises a couple notches this week after they finally—FINALLY!—finished work on Mokulele Highway. No more will residents and visitors see that Goodfellow was responsible for taking sooooo long to finish a four-lane road that’s less than seven miles long. MTW

ROBREPORT KAI: continued from page 6 happening throughout Maui. Now I’m finding people talking to me, wanting help with how to address the challenges in our community— affordable housing, education, all kinds of things. What are your top three election issues this year, and what is your vision for addressing them? One is affordable housing, especially rentals. A list of applicants could be maintained by the county, rather than by developers. It shouldn’t be difficult to manage, and would bring fairness to the system. Second is water. Obviously we need more storage, but that’s an expensive, long-term fix that will take five years or longer. People don’t like to be told they need to conserve, but it’s essential. Privatization of water is going on worldwide. It is dangerous for Maui to allow private companies to control our water systems. We need to regain control. Water must be available and equitably distributed. Third is agriculture. Supporting ag can positively impact our economy, creating a self-sustaining economy. Ag lands provide food, jobs, and a sense of beauty. Our fields could be growing food and creating energy. Instead, they are blowing away in the wind. We need tax breaks and incentives for growing food, to utilize and protect ag lands. Then we can reach our fullest potential of using that resource as the asset that it is. What other vital community issues

are not being addressed with the urgency needed to help shift our path towards self-sufficiency and sustainability? Energy, and the needs of our elderly. Our dependence on imports places us in a dangerous situation. And we’re not moving fast enough. Look what happened with the second phase of Kaheawa Wind [now in a contested case docket with the Public Utility Commission]. Our elderly are Maui’s fastest growing age group. Retirees, too. This is also an affordable housing issue. Not everyone wants to live in Hale Makua. The county could partner with developers for mixed-use communities that accommodate the needs of older populations as well as younger. What is your vision for the Maui your children will inherit? We have so many possibilities that are exciting—wind, waves, the sun. That should provide new opportunities to get our economy on track, and get us away from our dependence on imports. With the right choices, we can continue to attract people to Maui for the right reasons, not just for more luxury housing. Our education system needs a lot of work. I’d also say our government is a bit out of touch with what our communities want. I’m hearing a lot of dissatisfaction with the current leadership. We need the diversification that is provided by homebased businesses. It helps our economy, cuts down on commuting. Lack of affordable housing and jobs are the two biggest reasons people leave. I want to help plan our future so my kids can live here. Your dad made it a point to spend very little on campaign finances. How will you approach the issue, as a first-time candi-

date running for a seat occupied by a four-term councilor? It’s a very dangerous situation when special interest groups and big developers influence our representatives by financing their campaigns. My dad, on principle, refused to spend money on campaigning. He relied on his performance as a county council member representing the public. A first time candidate doesn’t have that advantage. I’ll be attending all the community meetings and campaign forums, to meet people and listen to their major concerns. I’ll do some door-to-door. People pay closer attention to the council now that it’s on Akaku. Quite a few issues have arisen in the past year, like Wailea 670, and people are unhappy with their voting records. I support public funding of campaigns. It would be great if every candidate could have the same amount. What education and experiences do you believe qualify you for this job? First, I’ve worked on the eighth floor [of the Kalana O Maui building] and know I can work well with people there. I have good leadership skills, and am good at problem solving. It takes teamwork, not just one person, to be an effective leader and public servant. People are excited at the prospect of a new president, and that will bring out a lot of voters, especially young people. That’s really exciting. My age [37] might be attractive to younger voters. Then, once they get interested, they stay involved. With the General Plan revision happening, it’s an exciting time. We get do plan our future, not just the developers. I’m ready to help serve in planning Maui’s future for the betterment of us all. MTW

YOUR COMPREHENSIVE

MAUI FILM FESTIVAL

The moviest festival of them all I’ll always remember the first time I attended the Maui Film Festival. There I was, sitting on a blanket next to a pretty girl. We were on a Wailea golf course, and the clouds lazily covered and uncovered the moon. And way in front of us and a few hundred other people, the Owens brothers chewed their way through some flick that didn’t actually end up getting released for another two years. It was great. There are a lot of movie festivals out there, but Maui’s is different. Started by Barry and Stella Rivers in 2000, the Maui Film Festival brings fantastic feature films, riveting documentaries, hilarious shorts, glamorous stars and Hollywood glitz to our island. From June 11 to 15, Maui is transformed into the world’s movie wonderland. You know the drill: big pictures under the stars at the Celestial Cinema (feel free to take your own beach chair, and now it’s got “enhanced” Dolby Digital quality sound!), more thought-provoking features and documentaries at the MACC and Digital Skydome and some free flicks on Wailea Beach. So what are you waiting for?

ONO KINEGRINDS

BY JESSICA ARMSTRONG JESSICA@MAUITIME.COM

Dinner and a Movie What you can eat at the Maui Film Festival Personally, I’m a Junior Mints and popcorn kind of girl (extra butter, please) when it comes to movie theater food. But this week, I might be coerced out of my sweet and salty rut because the upcoming Maui Film Festival in Wailea is the catalyst for a quadruple-feature of dining events that simply defy the cinema status quo. The menus are decadent, to say the least, and this brief run down of culinary offerings is just a taste of what food-lovers can expect at the year’s extravagant film event. The gastronomic adventure begins with the Taste of Ko Opening Reception. So much good food is being prepared for this event that it’s been broken down into five distinct “stations,” probably to help people like me who end up juggling three heaping plates at the end of any huge buffet. Black and blue ahi will mingle with “Paniolo” rib-eye steak from Maui Cattle Company at one station and coconut curry lamb chops and seared opah with black bean sauce at another. Two more will host Lumpia spring rolls, miso glazed tiger prawns, tempura battered ahi sushi and vegetables and won bok kim chee. Finally, there will be a station dedicated exclusively to dessert, with chocolate baked custard, lychee-sake kanten and something mysteriously delicious sounding called an almond float. Admission to the feast includes complimentary Ocean Vodka cocktails like the Kula lavender infused lemon drop. It’s hard to believe that anyone will still have an appetite after that lavish menu, but then again this is America and if there’s one thing we as a country can collectively excel at, it’s eating. A lot. Thankfully, the Starry Night Moon Dance party’s fare comes in pupu style. The offerings will be smaller but, judging by the menu, just as sumptuous. Snow crab salad-stuffed cherry tomatoes and smoked salmon on Belgian endive will be passed around the room while partiers enjoy Tommy Bahama Rum drinks and visit the seafood and finger food bars stocked with ahi poke in puff pastry, green mussels in a half shell, rosemary skewered strip loin, snow crab claws and lots of grilled asparagus and other veggies. This is all just the tip of the iceberg,

24

JUNE 5, 2008

because the Taste of Chocolate is next. This late-night, dessert-only affair features espresso chocolate soufflés, hot chocolate mousse, truffles, Bailey’s and malted milk shots, milk chocolate crème brulee and many more incredibly delectable surprises. According to my sweet tooth, this will be the biggest dessert spread to hit Maui this year. But the real star of this culinary show is the Taste of Wailea, the grand finale of a week marathon of very good eating and the collective effort of some of the best chefs on Maui. Ferraro’s is throwing their seafood risotto into the hat with the Grand Wailea’s lobster tempura and braised Kobe short ribs, while Tommy Bahama’s will offer sea scallop sliders and Habana Cabana mini pork sandwiches with blackberry brandy barbeque sauce. Irish offerings like Guiness-marinated braised short ribs and potato gnocchi with wild mushroom ragu will be provided my Mulligan’s on the Blue and Matteo’s. Mala Wailea is getting some of the action, too, with their ahi bruschetta and spicy lamb pitas with garlic aioli. Obviously, there’s a whole lot more to list here. Café Mambo, Spago and the Fairmont Kea Lani all have delicious dishes lined up for this event and there are big plans for dramatic Ocean Vodka cocktails in the works, too. Honolulu Coffee Company is planning a dessert that involves dipping acai sorbet balls into Kona coffee and dark chocolate. There’s going to be a lot of food to be eaten in Wailea this week, but I have to remind myself that sometime during this week of incredible feasting there’s going to be lots of good films to watch, awards to present and movie stars to meet. [FESTIVAL] In case you haven’t noticed—which would mean that you’re either comatose or an infant—we’re surrounded by water. It’s salty, warm and full of yummy fish, beautiful coral and, for half the year, humpback whales. Not only is the ocean beautiful, it’s ridiculously and vitally important to the survival of the human race. Here’s a fun and delicious way to learn about protecting the deep blue—eat it. Head up to Seascape Restaurant in Ma`alaea on Friday for a dinner buffet with sustainable fish from Maui waters and locally grown produce and products. You’d be amazed at the vast amount and variety of food items that are grown, produced, grown and raised on Maui. On Saturday and Sunday the Maui Ocean Center will host live music and hula dancing, games, prizes, ocean arts and crafts, informational booths and a special performances by GameKids Performing Arts and `Ulalena dancers, all included with regular admission. Sustainable buffet tickets: $65 plus tax & gratuity, 6 p.m. For a complete schedule of events visit www.mauioceancenter.com or call 270-7000. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

[FILM] I know, the Maui Film Festival is in full swing this week. But if you want to watch a movie in a public setting without all of the fancy-pants drama that can come with it, check out Cinema Night at Café Mambo this Thursday. This week, the movie playing is Death of a Funeral, a hilarious but slightly creepy black comedy directed by Frank Oz. I’m dying (ba-dum-dum) to see it. Tickets: $5 and the option to buy food (come early) and drinks. For more information visit www.cafemambomaui.com.

[EVENT] That would be, “One more time” to you. First Friday’s back, just like the First Friday before it and the one before that and so on. In fact, First Friday has become such a fixture in Wailuku that last month I took it for granted and didn’t make a big fuss. This week, the public can look forward to entertainment by Pam Gamboa Peterson, DJ Jamz, the MAPA dancers and Jocelyn Romero Demirbag and Freedom. Bill Best from Manao Radio will be the celebrity artist at Gallery Ha. For more information call Teri Edmonds at 249-9710.

When I looked them up on Myspace.com the first thing that struck me as cool about Versatile was that there’s, like, nine or 10 of them up on stage at a time. These guys are no small operation. There are several rhythm and bass guitars, percussion, keyboards and at least two guys doing vocals. But despite the crowded stage their sound is deceptively simple and minimal. Yeah, it’s more roots reggae and dub music, but somehow on the Westside we never get tired of that chill, irie vibe. Cover: $5. 661-3160. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

Jack Black inhabits the animated panda called Po with so much of his signature whimsy that audiences get a double dose of Black’s comic persona. Po is an adopted child to a family of Chinese cooks and is expected to carry on the family business, but Po dreams only of becoming a great kung fu master. At a high mountain temple, lives the great Master Oogway (a comic turtle voiced by Randall Duk Kim), who chooses Po to become the temple’s new Dragon Warrior over its highly skilled “Furious Five” monks (voiced by Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, David Cross and Seth Rogan). In order to protect the temple from the wrath of escaped prisoner and kung fu snow leopard Tai Lung (voiced by Ian McShane) Po must master the Secret of the Dragon Scroll with the help of a miniature wolf named Master Shifu (voiced by Dustin Hoffman). In spite of its strict adherence to limited formula constraints, Kung Fu Panda is an

Kimbo Slice’s next opponent enjoyable kid’s movie full of zippy cartoon imagery and heartfelt vocal performances. I once asked Jack Black what he liked to do in his spare time. “I likes to doodle,” he said in that instantly recognizable Jack Black way. It’s the kind of answer that wins you over for its irreverent sense of childish liberation.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

It’s significant that in animated movies, vocal performances are always recorded before a team of animators set about matching the characters’ mouths and actions. It’s this process that enables an actor like Jack Black to put his stamp on a character in subtle and dramatic ways. Po is a lazy, overweight panda with enough desire in his heart to get him up

the Temple Mountain on the day when the next keeper of the great secret will be chosen. Like Neo in The Matrix or Michael Angarano’s young character in The Forbidden Kingdom, Po is groomed as the next great defender. He will have to learn discipline, respect, and a brand of confidence that can only come from facing his greatest fears, namely entering into combat with the deadly Tai Lung. Ian McShane stands out in the role of the vengeful snow tiger that once apprenticed at the temple to be the next Dragon Warrior under Master Oogway. but was rejected for his mean streak that threatened all of those around him. McShane’s emotionally powerful voice is perfectly suited to grounding his character as an enemy of outsized proportions. Objectively, there isn’t that much of a difference between The Forbidden Kingdom (starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li) and Kung Fu Panda, except that the latter is better suited to younger children. The animation on display is top-notch, but it’s Jack Black that steals the show. Hans Zimmer and John Powell provide a bright musical score for the harmless action. MTW

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL - PG13 - Action - Indiana Jones may be old enough to collect Social Security but that doesn’t mean he’s just going to sit back with a golf club in one hand and a pack of adult diapers in the other while the world is being threatened with nuclear disaster by some evildoers bent on world domination. No, much like a fine wineor Steven Spielberg’s directing skills- Jones just keeps getting better with age. 204 min IRON MAN - PG13 - Action - A Marvel’s comic adventure adaptation about a wealthy weapon maker whose trying to stop the evildoers who use his guns to hurt people. Four Stars Your chance to live the life of a paparazzi at the Maui Film Fest PIERCE BROSNAN

FELICITY HUFFMAN

VIRGINIA MADSEN

DENNIS QUAID

Terror grips my body as a certain secret agent clings for his life atop a 50-story building. A recent head wound sustained in an epic battle against a machine gun-toting grandmother mars his handsome face. The impeccably dressed henchmen are almost looming over us. I look into his GoldenEye and he whispers to me, “Tomorrow Never Dies.” With that he leaps off the ledge… onto the awaiting stealth helicopter. I jump in after him and we watch the befuddled henchmen curse us. The sun is setting as he holds me close and says, “The World is Not Enough.” Later, I fall asleep in his arms. The next morning, I awake alone on a deserted beach. I search wildly for him, but to no avail. I mutter, “Mamma Mia!” Pierce Brosnan is getting The Maverick Award for being a badass.

What would you do if I told you Felicity Huffman has played a pre-op transsexual road-tripping with her long lost hustler son as well as an over-achieving desperate housewife afflicted with both cancer and ADHD children? She has. Not at the same time, of course. Felicity Huffman is an exceptional actress with the ability to touch her audience and also make them laugh. This is evident in her roles in the film Transamerica and television series Desperate Housewives. By attending the Film Festival event on June 13, not only will be you treated with wine and Heineken Beer (The OFFICIAL beer of the Maui Film Festival), you will also be privy to a complimentary screening of the Hawai‘i premiere of Huffman’s latest film, Phoebe in Wonderland. Felicity Huffman will be awarded The Nova Award for not only being hot like one, but for also being an outright fierce actress.

I watched Sideways five times. It wasn’t because I particularly liked the movie. In fact, I loathed it. I was trying to understand why everybody else gave it such rave reviews. But even with my negative bias (I go to movies to get away from real life, not re-live it), Virginia Madsen was outstanding in the film. Madsen has a long list of accomplishments, including playing The Dangerous Woman in the silver screen adaptation of A Prairie Home Companion. She has also starred opposite of Billy Bob Thornton in The Astronaut Farmer. In addition to her work as an actress, Madsen formed the production company Title IX. Its first fully financed documentary, I Know a Woman Like That, highlights the accomplishments of women ages 64 to 94. Virginia Madsen will be awarded The Navigator Award, apparently for being able to successfully navigate her versatile Hollywood career.

A charismatic grin, talent and oodles of money will get you anything you want. Luckily for Dennis Quaid, he’s amply equipped with all three. I don’t understand the concept of awarding Quaid The Galaxy Award, though. When I think of galaxies, I think of vast stretches of empty space and the word “probe.” Quaid is definitely not similar to empty space; his name evokes images of films such as Vantage Point and American Dreamz. Quaid’s winning grin also reminds me of family films such as Yours, Mine and Ours, as well as the 1998 re-make of The Parent Trap. Oh, I also think of Lindsay Lohan before, well, what stars usually use their charismatic grins, talent and oodles of money for: drugs and alcohol. Dennis Quaid will be awarded The Galaxy Award for, my best guess, being an outstanding star in an industry teeming with them.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You may believe it’s egotistical to think it’s all about you, but that all depends on whether it’s your delusion or the reality. This week, it’s the reality. There are enough people who adore you and want to see you happy that they’ve made you the focus of their loving attention, at least for now. It might be a bit overwhelming at first, and you should certainly avoid letting it go to your head. But try to enjoy it, and be grateful for it. This kind of thing never lasts long. Eat it up while you can.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You desperately want to have your cake and eat pie, too, but it just doesn’t work that way. You chose the cake, so you don’t get pie. Can you deal with that? This week, if you’re convinced the pie’s really better, you’ll have the chance to trade in the cake for the dessert you think you really wanted all along. However, bear in mind that this is a one-time thing; if you try to sneak a bite of cake after the deal is struck, you will get caught, and you’ll never even see either cake or pie again, let alone taste it.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) When there’s something exciting or juicy going down, you hate being excluded. Luckily, that’s extremely unlikely right now. While the big events of this week don’t revolve around you, they might as well, since you’re likely to be right in the middle of all of them. Now’s your chance to snub all the people who’ve slighted you in the past. Don’t take it, though. That’s just petty and lame, and you are neither of those things. Be the generous star that you are, allow bygones to be bygones, and let everyone in on the fun.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

before after

You’re not immune to flattery. In fact, you can get so caught up in the busy routines of your regular life that you don’t notice how starved for positive attention you are until you get some. Then you soak it up like a desert flower, and find yourself doing ridiculously out-of-character things just to get more. Avoid this scenario. You’re on a good track here, and you don’t need to get derailed by the sweet attentions of someone cute. Luckily, you have some sources of praise and adoration right on hand who won’t steer you completely off-course. Go hit them up for some.

BOTOX Remove Frown Line Wrinkle $190

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Exercise your trust. While it would be nice to get to install a safety net and put in some handholds before you had to walk across the narrow tight rope in front of you, those things aren’t necessary. You have the skill to cross this thing just as it is now, and whoever’s waiting on the other side, hands outstretched, knows that. If you take the time to set up all these precautions and redundancies, you’re actually putting yourself at greater risk than you realize. Sure, crossing this gap will be made an easy and safe no-brainer by the measures you’ve taken, but by the time you get there, the reason you wanted to cross in the first place is not likely to be there anymore.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Play to your strengths. It’s good to stretch yourself and try new things and explore new routes to the places you like to go, but sometimes you just have to fall back on the old tried-and-true standbys. Use those this week. You know they work—at least most of the time—and they’re right in the middle of your comfort zone. Save stretching the boundaries of your being and exploration of your potential for another day. Right now this is about getting the job done. You know you can, and you know how. Just get to it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Things have changed since the last time you tried what you’re thinking about trying. You’ll find that you’ve changed. What may have been an ordeal of sorts before will turn out to be easy now. So quit freaking out about it, just because your prior experiences in this area were so negative. In fact, the more that you can simply put those behind you and just forget about them, the better your chances of success will be. Naturally, if you set your mind to it, you can recreate those horrible past experiences almost exactly. By fixating on them, of course that’s exactly what you’ll do. Let them go. You’re a new person, and capable of having a completely new experience this time around. Please allow yourself that.

There are all kinds of awful people who would jump at the chance to worm their way into your life for all the wrong reasons. They’d steal your credit card info, or your stuff, or your peace of mind, without thinking twice. You can’t take it personally, though—because it’s not—and you can’t get paranoid about it. Take reasonable precautions and accept that if someone really wants in, they’ll get in, no matter what you do. In other words, if you’ve done all you sensibly can to prevent disaster, just relax and let go of everything else, since your worrying won’t do you any good; it certainly won’t make you any safer. Chill out. You’re as safe as you’ll ever be, and for most everyone, that’s safe enough.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You arrive at the home of an acquaintance, who requests that you remove your footwear before you enter. Now, you know that your feet (which have been sweating inside your shoes all day) are going to stink. You’re faced with a quandary; ignoring their request would be as unthinkable as simply leaving, but subjecting them to the reek of your feet would also be mortifying. What you’re left with is making the best of a far-less-than-ideal situation, and booking it straight to the bathroom after you enter the house, and giving your feet a good rinse. While the situation you’re dealing with isn’t exactly the same, it’s got parallels. This is hardly the disaster you think it is. It’s more an inconvenience. Go scrub your toes and get on with your evening.

You were overdue for some drama, weren’t you? Things can only go smoothly for so long before someone’s bound to rock the boat, just to make life interesting. Don’t act so fed up. Although this is a hassle, no question, you’d be lying if you said you weren’t at least a little bit excited by it. Sailing smooth waters secretly bores you. Dealing with a bit of chop, or, heck, the risk of completely capsizing, is more your cup of tea. No need to rock the boat yourself, as someone’s bound to do it for you sooner or later. Also, no need to thank them for making your life more interesting; just don’t complain too loudly when they do.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It’s a good week to indulge all your most romantic urges. Be vulnerable, be passionate, and put it all out there. The timing is right. This kind of display is not only likely to be well-received, it’s apt to put you in a position to experience a lot more sweet romance, playful companionship, and memorable experiences than you’ve had in a long time. Don’t you want to set yourself up for that? It might involve going out on a bit of an emotional limb, but I reckon it’s worth it. Once you’re out there, you’ll probably be scared. But you’ll also be glad you had the guts to climb out that far.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Ask and you’ll receive. It’s not always as easy as this, of course, but right now your life is pretty simple. Ask for what you want, within reason. If your requests are heartfelt and modest, you’ll almost certainly get them. Of course, the other trick is making sure you ask the right person. The supermarket cashier is not going to be able to grant your wish, but someone else certainly can. You know exactly who’s able to grant your wish, right? Don’t be shy or reticent. Make sure that person becomes aware of it this week.

The Curse of the Bikini I had a moment of truth with myself the other day. I was in the dressing room at Old Navy trying on bikinis. Walking in, I figured that I would go with the usual XS, cut small in the butt-area bottoms, because–and I’ll only say this once–I’ve always been able to pull off skimpy Brazilian style bikinis. In fact, browsing through the choices, I wanted to dub Old Navy “Old Lady” because everything was conservative by my usual standards. Unfortunately, the print that I liked the best–Zebra!–was all out of XS and was a fuller cut that I’m used to, but I decided that I’d take it into the dressing room, along with a few other pairs, just in case. I tried on a pair of XS bottoms first. From the front, they didn’t look that bad. Except I became concerned when I realized that the cute little gap that’s usually visible between my thighs when I stand with my feet together is no longer there. When did that happen? I guess it explains the chaffing. Then I tried to check out the back view but couldn’t get a good look. So feeling rather clever, I pointed my camera phone over my shoulder and snapped a photo. When I looked at it, it was pretty bad and I thought maybe it was just the angle so I deleted it and took another. But that one was worse. The painful truth? My ass–once voted in the Top Five in my entire high school–has gone to hell in a hand basket. But in an act of supreme maturity, I admitted defeat and bought the bigger bottom. A few days later while I was getting out of the shower, the hubby walked into the bathroom and exclaimed, “Whoa! I’ve never seen you with tan lines that… BIG before.” I tried to stop his heart with stink eye. When it didn’t work, I asked him to buy me a weight bench. He asked why and I told him that I wanted to lift and restore my butt to the glory that it once was. “Don’t you think you’re a little passed that?” he asked. Screw stink eye—where’s my rolling pin? Over the weekend we searched garage sales for a weight bench. I didn’t find one, but I did score a bunch of slightly baggy pants. Today I went for a run at the track before work. Fifteen years ago I ran a mile in six minutes and four seconds. Not to brag, but I was the MIL champ in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs during my freshman year. Of course, I haven’t run a full mile in a decade. Nonetheless, I laced up my new shoes, plugged in my iPod and Nike run-ometer and hit the rubber. For the first 200 meters I loved it. It felt good and natural, but it quickly became torturous. At 600 meters I scanned the track for people looking like they might know how to perform CPR. According to my iPod (although I might have only gone three times around the track), I finished the mile in eight minutes, 19 seconds. I didn’t pass out, although with all the red spots in my vision, I don’t think that I should have gotten behind the wheel so soon. When it was all said and done, I decided that setting a goal of logging 30 miles by the time I’m 30 is better than expecting to be able to run as fast as I did back in high school. I always wanted to break six minutes anyway. Starr Begley alternates between wanting to hug and strangle Anthony Pignataro. MTW
