LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR AGAIN WITH THE SUPEFERRY This letter turned out to be longer than I had intended. Originally, it was about the Superferry generated traffic and how we are completely missing the boat, so to speak, on some other major offenders. With all the fuss about the Superferry lately, I wonder how it has missed the public’s attention the regular barges offloading cars into our harbor every day. Young Brothers even has a specialty barge just for vehicles. I wonder how many cars can fit on that thing? I’ll bet they don’t even have a plan to ship a car back for every one that comes here. I think it’s time we look at some of the longestablished companies here that have been doing some of the worst offenses for a long time rather than lambasting a new company trying to provide a long-needed service to the islands. Worse Offenders: • Poison/fertilizer Spraying: I’ve seen helicopters spraying this nasty stuff right next to the highway at Rush Hour • Rental Cars: Do they have to return their cars to the mainland after they’re done with them? Or do they just get to inject them into our used car market? • Car Dealerships: Their whole business is getting more cars on the island. Where’s the fuss about that? • Hotels: Where are the funds for the Lahaina Bypass they were supposed to provide in turn for building their buildings? • Cane Burning: Why? It’s cheap. No matter if it pollutes our air every day and rains ash upon the entire island. What about the traffic hazard from smoke? My whole take on the islands is you can’t stop development or progress. What we can do, is try to accept that

development, but sway it so it can weigh out its harms with its benefits. We also have to hold corporations to their promises, and as technology changes, ratchet up standards. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am that Maui still allows cane burning on its fields when there are other, albeit more expensive, technological alternatives. This should be an especially sore spot for an economy so based in tourism to see its air visibly fouled on an almost daily basis for the production of sugar. Sugar, by which, will increase in price over the coming years as we start to use more ethanol-based fuels. Corn will rise in price, following that corn syrup, then the industry shift to sugar for nutrition, and its prices rise because of demand. The sugar company will make its money in the end and possibly revive its slowly dwindling company. Thanks for your time. I hope you found this an insightful read. I feel these issues are overlooked for more hot-button ones.

It reads like classic film noir—extortion threats, an FBI sting, extradition, a mysterious girl in the Philippines— except this one stars Governor Lingle’s Chief of Staff Here’s a riddle for you: what do you get when you mix one top state official, a couple Asian nationals, some FBI agents, a few allegations of blackmail and prostitution, one sting operation and a really quiet extradition? You get the makings of a really big scandal that should rock the state of Hawai‘i. First, the characters:

of alleged blackmail. When the FBI agents arrested Patkar, they also searched his home and seized his computer. His trial is supposed to begin in August. Back in April, a Hawai‘i grand jury indicted Patkar on charges of “threatening to injure the property and reputation of”

• Robert “Bob” Awana: Since 2003, he’s been Governor Linda Lingle’s Chief of Staff. He’s generally considered one of the most powerful officials in the Lingle Administration. • Rajadatta Patkar: An Indian citizen who was working in Japan until FBI agents arrested him in March and shipped him to the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu. According to his brother, he’s a former vice president for Dell Japan who’s lived in Japan for 20 years. And, he has degrees in electrical engineering from the India Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Texas. • Jullie Mae: A resident of the Philippines and apparent friend of Patkar. But it’s her relationship with Awana that lies at the heart of the issue.

expected to “entertain his delegates.” When I asked if this included sexual entertainment, Charudatta said, “Yes.”

Bob Awana, who’s referred to in the fourpage April 27 indictment as “R.A.” More specifically, the indictment says Patkar tried to extort $35,000 from Awana via “an e-mail communication originating outside the State of Hawaii.” In an unusual move, the court sealed the indictment; then a month later, on May 23, the judge suddenly unsealed it. “I was blackmailed by email,” Awana see AWANA, page 11

Hiking Maui Land & Pine’s Mauna Lei Arboretum trail

At its June 13, 2007 hearing, the Maui County Liquor decided the question of what to do with increased reports of violence and troubles at Kihei Kalama Villages by doing what all great commissions do when confronted with matters of such weight and importance: they tabled the matter for a month. The “talk story” session involving the commission, two members of the Maui Police Department and all the owners and liquor licensees from the KiheiTriangle took a little over an hour. It began with Sergeant Mervin Ching of the Maui PD’s Kihei District painting a dark picture of rapidly surging crime in the area that includes Life’s a Beach, Kahale’s, Bada Bing, South Shore Tiki Lounge, Pupu Lounge, LuLu’s, Dog & Duck and, eventually, Ambrosia. “We are responding to too many calls for service in this one area,” Ching said. “We are over-burdened by the amount of calls. It’s too much. It’s draining our resources.” LC Director Franklyn Silva agreed. “That’s a bad area,” he said. “That’s Indian Country.”

Who celebrated National Trail Day? Who even knew there was such a day? Who doesn’t care about it but just likes to hike? I’m with you, and on Saturday, June 2, 2007 I took part in a five-mile hike through the Mauna Lei Arboretum in West Maui. The county’s Na Ala Hele and the Maui Land & Pineapple Company sponsored the hike, which is through ML&P land. About 60 people showed up, even though it was one of the hottest days of the year. The day began at the ritzy Kapalua Resort with a jovial raffle drawing that included prizes like shirts, a fanny pack, a first-aid kit, gift card and socks. Oh yes—socks. A young boy won one pair, prompting someone in the crowd to yell, “You’ll grow into them.” Yeah, in about five years. Everyone went home a winner of sorts, with each participant getting a small compass, two types of bug repellant samples, a $5-off coupon for an online Thorlo purchase and an American Hiking Society sticker. Who doesn’t like stickers? Then the hosts split everyone into groups of 15, with two leaders for each group. After that we boarded biodieselpowered trucks and headed to D.T. Fleming’s garden of native and foreign plants. I shouldered my way into the party headed by Randy Bartlett, Maui Land and Pine’s Pu‘u Kukui Watershed

Manager. His group was going in first and I had plans for the rest of my Saturday. Which ended up falling through. Typical. Anyway, professional Oregonian trail designers constructed the Mauna Lei Arboretum trail. There were mixed feelings about hiring designers from Oregon instead of somewhere more local, but I had no complaints. The plants were clearly labeled, with their English, Hawaiian (if applicable) and Latin names all listed along with markings indicating whether they were indigenous, endemic or non-native. I saw ohia lehua, along with alahele, the wise lama and akia, my favorite fish poison, amongst other tongue twisting native flora. Unfortunately for Hawai‘i, Fleming was “an innovative thinker and quickly diversified crops,” according to a sign at the beginning of the trail. He invited Pacific Rim plants that became invasive like chefflera (which should be familiar to landscapers), strawberry guava (my personal favorite source of Vitamin C), the cute shoe button plant that totally takes me back to the 1920’s, the usefully decorative Christmas berry, a fake cinnamon shrub that smelled good but which I realize I smell a little too often, and several species of banyans. I can’t say I blame Fleming for these rather likeable floras; maybe he wanted to boost the island’s immune system with a little vaccination attempt. While I’m sure the majority of the hikers found the wealth of local flora and vistas by the Pu‘uki Preserve the highlights of

the hike, I rather enjoyed the noninvasive non-natives like the Indian bo, whose leaf leaves behind a skeleton as it decomposes, becoming a perfect window decoration. I snagged one as a souvenir before the event came to an end. The current trail is the first five miles of the 100 ML&P plans to put on what it considers the largest private reserve in Hawai‘i. About 45 miles of the trails will be designated for hiking only, leaving almost 20 miles to mountain bikers, six to equestrian fans, a little over one for ziplines, a half mile for something called a zipper lift, and another seven a half miles along the coast. The company says the Mauna Lei Arboretum trail should be open to the public by July, later followed by the pedestrian three and a half miles of the Kapalua Coastal Trail, which still requires the company to obtain a few county permits. “This is a special place with native plants that don’t exist anywhere else and its fragility is the reason for keeping it closed to the public,” Bartlett said as we were driving back. “I hope people can respect that.”

According to statistics Ching provided the commission, Kihei officers responded to just 19 violent cases in the April-May 2006 time period, but 123 cases in the same period this year. When asked why the sudden increase in troubles, Assistant Chief Wayne Ribao, Ching’s supervisor, told the panel, “There are too many bars in a small area.” Ching and Ribao asked the commission to limit the hours of operation for all licensees in Kihei Kalama Villages to just 12:30 in the morning. But the commissioners rejected the idea, saying the real problem was that there simply wasn’t enough of a police presence. According to Ching, the Kihei District typically has just one supervisor and four officers. Since it takes about three officers to handle a single arrest, police have been reluctant to slap the cuffs on anyone found making trouble in the Triangle.

LINGLE BOOSTS GMOS Monsanto must be doing pretty well to have Hawai`i Governor Linda Lingle boosting genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to the Japanese government. On June 9 Lingle and a delegation of state officials left for a 10-day whirlwind tour of Asia, part of which includes a stop in Tokyo to convince leaders there to import our Rainbow papaya and potted anthuriums, reports the June 8 Honolulu Star-Bulletin. “We have been working with the Japanese government for quite some time on this and we will be offering to give them more information and make it clear why it is a positive thing for them,” Lingle says in the paper. WEDNESDAY, June 6 Hey, crazy tourists unfazed by the prospect of waking up at three in the morning just so you can take a van up to the cold, cold Haleakala summit and then careen down the mountain with a pack of similarly crazed rubes: you better do it soon because the National Park Service is reviewing the whole downhill bike tour thing, according to today’s Honolulu StarBulletin. And it’s a real shame, too, because I’ve always loved driving extra-slow down Baldwin Avenue in the morning while following a pack of bicyclists—it lets me play out my lifelong fantasy of being a Tour de France team mechanic, though without the French chicks lining the road, of course. But park rangers sound serious about there being safety concerns with the riders—a couple recent crashes would have turned fatal if riders hadn’t been wearing helmets. “Losing control like that and careening into lava rocks—I am amazed they survived,” Chief Ranger Mark TanakaSanders says in the article. Amazing, indeed, until you think about the fact that most of the people who pay good

THURSDAY, June 7 There was a chilling story on our exploding defense budget posted on MotherJones.com the other day by Rolling Stone National Security Correspondent Robert Dreyfuss. “Democratic criticism of administration policy in Iraq looks muscle-bound when compared with the Party’s readiness to go along with the President’s massive military buildup, domestically and globally,” Dreyfuss wrote. “[A]ccording to the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation, U.S. defense spending this year amounts to exactly twice the combined military spending of the next six biggest military powers: China, Russia, the U.K., France, Japan, and Germany.” Sure, you might say, we’re at war, and when at war we need to give the Pentagon what it needs. This is true, to a point—Dreyfuss points out that much of the defense money spent today is going to things like bombers, fighter jets, fancy new navy destroyers and aircraft carriers—big-ticket items that have nothing to do with ending the Taliban insurgency, getting rid of Afghani warlords or eliminating Baghdad’s murderous sectarian militias. But what really bites is Drefuss’ thesis that these massive weapons programs could never have gotten through without considerable Democratic support—support that stretches all the way to Hawai‘i, which sends four Democrats to Washington. According to the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP), since 1989 U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye’s various reelection committees have taken considerable money from the defense industry— $252,350 to be exact. Of his top 20 campaign contributors, six are defense political action committees (PACs): Boeing ($41,800); Northrop Grumman ($35,000); General Dynamics ($34,350) and so on. CRP data shows U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka and Congressional Representative Mazie Hirono (D, 2nd District) have accepted minimal, if any, defense bucks, but venerable old Neil Abercrombie is right up there with Inouye, taking in $145,960 from defense PACs since 1989.

So yesterday Mayor Charmaine Tavares spoke in front of a sell-out crowd of 250 at the Maui Tropical Plantation. She reportedly talked about how hard it is for the county to hire good people—or people at all—how we still need to spend county funds to promote tourism and how we all need to volunteer more. Her speech was part of a Maui Chamber of Commerce luncheon sponsored by Alexander & Baldwin. Anyway, I’m harping on the fact that A&B sponsored the appearance because for some strange reason, that tiny little fact—though clearly disclosed in recent Maui Chamber newsletters advertising Tavares’ speech— didn’t make it into today’s Maui News report on the event. And that’s really strange because Maui News Publisher Joe Bradley sits on the Chamber’s Board of Directors with both Grant Chun of A&B Properties and Mercer “Chubby” Vicens, a long-time consultant to A&B. You’d think that with tight connections like that they’d all be—forgive me—on the same page.

Democratic Party is soft on defense. Whatever.

This is really shaping up to be Senator Inouye’s week. I had thought he was, as one of the most senior Senators in the U.S. Congress, merely just a master of pork barrel spending and staunch friend of defense contractors. Shows what I know— he also possesses a remarkable grasp of domestic security issues. “At this time in our nation’s history, it is essential that our airports are secure,” Inouye said in a press release on new federal funding for

airport security that’s quoted in today’s Honolulu Advertiser. What’s unclear from the story is whether this astonishing statement—made nearly six years after four simultaneous airliner hijackings ended up destroying the World Trade Center and seriously damaging the Pentagon—represents just Inouye’s assessment or the views of the federal government as a whole. As to why it took nearly six years for the federal government to spend $6 million to, as Inouye put it, “integrate Hawai‘i’s eight primary airports into a single, coordinated system that will meet the Federal Aviation Administration’s security requirements,” the paper doesn’t say.

MONDAY, June 11 Speaking of government not exactly being responsive to potential crises, the state Department of Agriculture still hasn’t ordered a quarantine on local honey, according to today’s Pacific Business News. The hope was a quarantine could slow the ravenous appetite of the varroa mite, which has annihilated Oahu bees but hasn’t yet reached Maui (see our May 31 cover story “To Bee or Not to Bee” for more on how a loss of bees could cripple local farming). In fact, it doesn’t look like state officials know what to do. Beekeepers and ag officials were to talk on Friday, but PBN says none of the bee-savvy officials bothered to show.

said. “I went to Kubo, he notified the FBI, and I cooperated with their investigation.” The FBI then set up a sting operation in which they put up $4,000. With that money Awana bought a $4,000 credit card/gift card and sent it to Patkar in Japan. Not long after the card was accessed, FBI agents grabbed Patkar in Tokyo and extradited him to the U.S. The judge granted a motion for him to be held without bail. Patkar’s brother, Charudatta, tells a somewhat different story. According to him, his brother is innocent and his friend “donated the gift card to a Hindu religious charity.” Charudatta said his brother is a highly educated professional with three advanced degrees who once served as the lead interpreter when the Indian Prime Minister visited Japan, and was most recently working on his own computer business. According to Charudatta, Paktar had developed “a relationship” with Jullie Mae of the Philippines through the Internet, though they apparently never actually met. When Mae began complaining to Patkar about being bothered by a U.S. official, Patkar decided to help. Charudatta added that Awana had allegedly promised Mae a job and had sent her money. But the job never materialized, and when Awana and other state officials visited the Philippines, Charudatta said Mae was expected to “entertain his delegates.” When I asked if this included sexual entertainment, Charudatta said, “Yes.” Awana refused to comment for this story on either how he allegedly knew Mae or Charudatta’s allegations. “I can’t share any details about that,” he said. But he did confirm that he has visited the Philippines within the last three years. Awana also denied that he had “sexually exploited” Mae in a June

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD 11 KITV news report on the case, but refused to comment on why Patkar was allegedly blackmailing him. When I asked for a copy of the emailed blackmail or letters from Jullie Mae, Awana declined, saying he’d “turned all of that over to the FBI.” Charudatta claimed that it was one of his brother’s associates–a guy named “Michael”–who actually wrote to Awana demanding money, and that Patkar had no knowledge of it. “Michael” apparently fled Japan when the FBI arrested Patkar. Patkar’s family in New Delhi hired Nawal Kishore Jha, an attorney who later petitioned the Indian High Court as well as the Indian Supreme Court in an attempt to bring Patkar back to India to stand trial. “However, [the justices] rejected the petition on the reasoning that it cannot give any directions to the US administration,” reported the Hindustan Times on May 29, 2007. Patkar’s case has been all over Indian newspapers since late May, but has received scant play here in Hawai‘i, even though Patkar was arrested in a foreign country by Hawai‘i-based FBI agents and has been in jail in Honolulu since March. In fact, that’s how Maui Time found out about the story—on June 6 somebody anonymously emailed us a copy of a brief May 29 Calcutta Telegraph story on the case, referring to Awana as “a top US official.” Then three days later, on June 9—less than 24 hours after I emailed a copy of Patkar’s indictment to Awana and requested comment—the Honolulu Advertiser ran a front-page story written by two reporters headlined, “Lingle’s top aide helped FBI sting.” According to the article, which was based heavily on the indictment, Awana cooperated with the FBI to bring down a potentially dangerous, international eblackmailer. But what’s glaringly absent from the story is any explanation as to why Patkar was allegedly blackmailing Awana in the first place. In any case, Patkar’s trial begins late this summer. With this much salacious drama and international intrigue, it’s likely the story will get a lot more local play. MTW

The Japanese company Medical Life Care Giken said that later this year it will begin marketing a device that measures pets’ stress levels. The tiny patch on the bottom of a dog’s or cat’s paw changes color depending on the amount of sweat secreted, according to the researchers at Toyama University who developed it. And in March, New York’s Long Island Veterinary Specialists performed complicated hipreplacement surgery on a year-old shorthaired cat, using a material about the width of a wooden matchstick. Dogs receive hip replacements almost routinely now, but cats were thought to be too small.

In January, Joshua Vannoy, 18, filed a lawsuit against the Big Beaver Falls School District near Pittsburgh for the disruption to his high school years when he and his family were forced to moved to another school district because Joshua was being too harshly taunted. His troubles stemmed from an incident a year earlier, just before a DenverPittsburgh playoff football game when Joshua chose to wear a Broncos jersey to class and was then forced by one teacher to sit on the floor and endure paper wads being thrown at him because he was, according to the teacher, a “stinking Denver fan.”

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS Local music producer Ricky Lackey, during questioning in March by a judge in Cincinnati to determine an appropriate sentence for Lackey’s crime of attempted theft, said he had no children at the moment but does have “six on the way.” The judge sought clarification: “Are you marrying a woman with six children?” “No,” Lackey said. “I be concubining.” All six women are due during August, September or October. Lackey, who had recently paid restitution to his victim, was released without additional sentence.

OUTSOURCING GONE MAD Yet another U.S. job was outsourced to India in May, that of “local government reporter” covering city hall politicians in Pasadena, Calif. The publisher of the Web site PasadenaNow.com said the local beat could be handled very well from India, through telephone interviews and by watching live city council telecasts on the Internet.

OOPS! A cable broke on a leg extension machine at a YWCA facility in Akron, Ohio, in 2004, catapulting a steel bar forcefully at a 22-year-old football player working out for a shot at a college scholarship, hitting him squarely between his parted legs, whacking his left testicle. Three years later, he still walks gingerly and bow-legged because the slightest contact is painful, although he did manage to father a child in the interim. In April 2007, a jury awarded him $786,000 after hearing that the machine had been in disrepair.

IT’S A LIVING In January, Ronald Dotson, 39, pleaded no contest to attempting to break into a Ferndale, Mich., store in order to steal a mannequin outfitted in a French maid’s uniform, which authorities said was his seventh “statuephilia”-related offense in 13 years. “I thought I was getting my life together,” he told the judge, even though his arrest came only days after he was paroled for the sixth offense. One of the previous arrests involved an apparently irresistible “woman” in a pink dress and bobbed hair, and in another, he was found in an alley with three lingerieclad beauties. MTW

Plant Yourself at Kaheawa How to play in the dirt and learn something while you’re at it By Mira Allen relieve sore throats. “When I was little, they used to give it to me and I hated it,” she said, shaking her head. The reintroduction of native plants centers around the first two of the wind farm’s 20 turbines that stretch down a spine of the West Maui mountains, 2,000 feet above Ma‘alaea. The Lindseys take volunteers up every Sunday afternoon to replant, talk story and take in the striking scenery. “Sometimes we get an army of two or three,” Ed Lindsey said. “Other times it’s 20 to 25. You never really know.” The late afternoon sun filtered through occasional clouds to cast beams of light onto the mountainside. With the exception of the small group’s quiet conversation, the only sounds were the low whine of the spinning turbine blades. The manufacturer attached whistles to the blades to scare away birds that might otherwise fly into them. The Lindseys became more involved in conservation work after Ed retired from teaching and Puanani from her job as a police dispatcher. “Before that, we didn’t have too much time to go out,” Puanani said. “We were raising a family or always working.” She added that both of their families had raised them to speak out on issues they felt strongly about. “You can’t undersell yourselves as being voices of concern because public officials want you to come in,” Ed said. “They will listen to you. Show up, find out when meetings are. Call people. By not doing these things, you are excluding yourself.” Which is how they became involved with the wind farm. “We have been trying to get a farm up here for 10 years now,” he said. Water tanks dotted a nearby clearing, skirted by berms full of newly planted flora. A line of turbines stretched down towards the ocean. “The top of that turbine there is as big as a bus,” Ed Lindsey said as he gestured skyward. As he spoke, the blades of the towering structure spun lazily in the breeze. The conditions at the Kaheawa wind farm above Macgregor Point were perfect for a visit, though not so much for the turbines that harness the wind and convert it to electricity, which they’ve been doing since July 2006. On April 11, a small class from Maui Community College made the journey up to the wind farm to learn about Lindsey’s reforestation project as well as leave a few native plants in the soil. Ed and Puanani Lindsey have been working to preserve native plants in Kaheawa Valley for 30 years. As directors of Maui Cultural Lands, they’re well known advocates for the preservation of Hawai‘i’s land and culture. “Hawaiian culture is an ancient culture,” Puanani said as she scanned the ground for more invasive weeds to pull from the dirt. “The plants over here are like a time machine, who are we to destroy it? To me, it’s a way of saving native plants remnant to who we are.” She went about her work with the air of someone who had done this task a thousand times before, but still afforded it her full attention. Along the way, she would pause to indicate the various native species. “This is a uhaloa,” she said, pointing to a small plant with yellow flowers. She explained that it was very bitter tasting, though the root was often chewed to

tricity. According to the Kaheawa website, this eliminates the need for 244,000 barrels of fuel a year. Kaheawa Wind Power LLC operates the farm. That’s a partnership between UPC Wind Partners and local company Makani Nui Associates, of which Kent Smith of Smith Development is one owner. Kaheawa Wind Power provides a portion of the money needed to cover the cost of supplies and plants that the Lindseys utilize for the native plant restoration work, with most of the remaining expenses covered by an anonymous local donor. “We think it’s great,” Mike Gresham of Kaheawa Wind Power said. “We are happy that the group is interested in helping restore the area.” Gresham added the company also has a full time wildlife biologist to keep an eye on the endangered species in the area—

the Hawaiian Petrel, Newell’s Shearwater, Nene and the Hawaiian Hoary Bat. “This is no small effort,” he said. That’s an understatement. In the last year alone, 15,000 seedlings have been produced for the reforestation project. The plants, like the ones Ed pulled from the back of his pickup truck on April 11, are grown from seeds collected by the Lindseys at the site. After Ed carefully placed the plant buckets at the edge of the clearing, the students, armed with small shovels, set to work. The soil gave easily and soon emerald plants covered the red embankment. The students then adorned each plant with a miniature florescent flag and gave it a healthy ration of water. Ed gently rebuffed a few students who tried to wash their hands with the bottled water. “No, you see, it’s plants first, hands last,” he said. Later he gave them a buck-

et of water for rinsing. The Lindseys focus on educating volunteers as much as possible. “We teach that this [land] belongs to everybody,” Ed said. “Learning is not just in school. You should never stop learning.” Other projects the Lindseys spearhead include a project in Honokowai Valley, an archaeological site where an estimated 600 Native Hawaiian families once called home. The area itself is three square miles, much of it blanketed in a thick tangle of invasive plants. The goal is to eventually uncover the whole site and preserve it as an educational tool for the whole island. The Lindseys started Maui Cultural Lands in 2002. Their website calls it a “Maui based grassroots land trust organization whose mission is to stabilize, protect, and restore Hawaiian cultural resources.” This was in response to the need they felt for a return to the old Hawaiian tradition of stewarding the land. Near the end of the afternoon the sun ducked behind a few rain clouds and the already frigid air chilled a few more degrees. As the first few drops of an shower began to hit the dirt, the students packed their things and got ready to head back down the steep gravel road. The weather had been kind to them through-

It looks and tastes great anytime of day at Colleen’s

Every time I go to Colleen’s I’m reminded of the intriguing eclecticism of Haiku and its inhabitants. No other place, dining-wise, really captures that uniquely eccentric, earthy, hip and youthful upcountry vibe like Colleen’s at the Cannery. Thankfully, that vibrancy translates very well to a creative menu of fresh, contemporary cuisine. I sometimes find myself at Colleen’s when the restaurant is quiet and I can appreciate the stylish surroundings. The dining room appears expansive, an illusion enhanced by a very high ceiling, numerous windows, and plain white walls with beautiful art deco sconces and huge rectangular mirrors framed in wood and ornate metal trim. Several ceiling fans and glass lamps hang low from beams that have been painted black, complementing the mahogany wood tables and chairs, black vinyl booths and leafy green plants throughout the room. The kitchen can be seen just beyond the counter. But recently I went in for a late breakfast one morning, right before a rush of people filled the dining room. Half of them ordered without menus—clearly, they were regulars. And coincidentally, they were a rather good-looking bunch. Two separate sets of very lovely girls with conscientiously disheveled hair grabbed booths as a young, urban professional couple perused a guidebook. A lean, muscular man with a Mohawk and very short shorts headed to the kitchen as a local surfer ordered at the counter, then highfived a friend at a table with two hot blondes. A pretty soccer-mom looking woman turned to reveal a colorful full back tattoo, while an attractive group of high school kids approached the counter, discussing summer plans. A fresh-faced, tattooed and tribal ear-plugged couple followed closely behind, along with a handsome 30-something man in jeans, a longsleeve button-up shirt and a baseball cap, while two construction workers ordered beers and chatted casually across from a table of six rosycheeked and dreadlocked hipsters. The servers, attentive, efficient and friendly, constantly glided through the bustling dining room. I ordered an omelet with portabella mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, carmelized onions

and goat cheese. It came with larger than bite-sized dark golden wedges of roasted potato and slices of freshly baked whole wheat bread. Delectable! There’s other stuff for breakfast, of course. Like the Mahi Mahi Benedict, smoked salmon omelet, breakfast burrito, French Toast, and an organic tofu vegetable wrap. There’s even something called a Hangover Cure, which is a skillet of sauteéd black forest ham, eggs, onions, mild green chiles, jack and cheddar cheese and roasted potatoes with a side of salsa, sour cream and wheat toast. They also have a full display case of pastries, like white chocolate raspberry scones and fluffy croissants. The lunch options are equally tempting. There’s a tasty array of gourmet sandwiches like turkey pesto and the Reuben, with their own slow-cooked corned beef, melted Swiss, sauerkraut on toasted rye bread, as well as wraps, like the grilled ono and avocado with mango red chili dressing and the roasted veggie wrap with oven-roasted eggplant and feta. There are also hearty salads—my favorite is the roasted beet with goat cheese, honey roasted walnuts and grape tomatoes. And burgers including bacon and blue cheese with Maui Cattle Co. hormone free beef with fries and a pint of beer for a mere $10.95. Or you can add bacon and blue cheese, sub beef for ahi, mahi mahi or ono. Dinner features many of the same salads, pizza and burgers as lunch, but also include some pastas like vodka penne, shrimp linguini, or ravioli with sautéed portabella mushrooms, tomatoes and roasted red pepper coulis. And there are also prime steaks, fresh seafood like the pan-seared ahi with ginger scented rice and bok choy stirfry, and a Red Ale and mango glazed ribs with sour cream and herb mashed potatoes. Prices are reasonable at any time of day, regardless of how attractive the clientele. MTW

Later arrested on charges of criminal trespass and violation of Kaho’olawe’s closed waters, the three activists stand trial this Friday at Maui District Court at 8 a.m. An hour earlier supporters will gather to protest the charges and make their claim that the Kingdom of Hawai‘i has for the last 114 years held “legitimate sovereignty” over Kaho‘olawe and the rest of Hawai‘i. Besmirching Nancy Drew Or, the case of the missing plot Hopes get dashed for creating a fresh Nancy Drew movie franchise (there were four such films made in the late 1930’s) with this less-thanperfunctory filmic update of the spitfire sleuth from the revered children’s book series. Making the most of her dad’s new attorney job in Los Angeles, Nancy (Emma Roberts) arranges for the pair (her mom died long ago) to move into a disused mansion formerly occupied by Dehlia Draycott, a famous Hollywood starlet murdered on the property in the early 1970’s.

Nancy breaks her fingers-crossed promise to her dad to “give up sleuthing” and sets about exploring the suddenly spick-and-span estate overseen by one creepy caretaker, Mr. Leshing (Marshall Bell). Secret passages, a projector spooled with one of Dehlia’s old timey movies and plenty of “clues” send Nancy on a mission to solve the enigma of Dehlia’s death and locate her undiscovered daughter, the recipient of Dehlia’s hidden will.

At Hollywood High, Nancy’s stylish but outdated mode of dress makes her a prime target for dumb-anddumber girlfriends Inga (Daniella Monet) and Trish (Kelly Vitz) who seem like they stumbled onto the wrong studio lot. There are few characters more rejected by their own movie than these two examples of female teen detritus. But Nancy suffers fools gladly as is further evidenced by her bizarre affinity for Corky (Josh Flitter) a romantically pushy 12-year-old brother to one of the dumb girls. Much of the intended humor comes from Corky’s insistent passes at Nancy that she ambivalently accepts, even in the presence of her unmistakably whipped boyfriend Ned (Max Thieriot) when he delivers Nancy’s hallmark blue roadster from the small town of River Heights. Thieriot plays the thankless role with poker-faced modesty that belies the subtle humiliations his character chronically suffers. The incoherent tone of the movie swings wildly between herky-jerky car chases, melodramatic ruses and Nancy’s lifesaving propensities that find her inexplicably performing an emergency tracheotomy with a ballpoint pen on the throat of a suffocating

partygoer. The filmmakers flagrantly overlook the fact that many parents, who grew up reading Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, will resent the spastic storyline that bears little resemblance to any of the formulaic books. It seems the farthest thing from rocket science for a skilled screenwriter to take any one of the nearly 200 Nancy Drew books and adapt it for modern film audiences. Instead, director/co-writer Andrew Fleming and Tiffany Paulsen have created

a Frankenstein mishmash of teen movie tropes that resembles Nancy Drew only by way of costume designer Kathy Lucas’ smart designs. Children’s book series like The Three Investigators and Nancy Drew may not assimilate as “literature,” but they are far more possessed of ethics than most modern day children’s books. It’s an utter embarrassment that this movie should even carry the Nancy Drew name. MTW

Sandology The method by which Riki and Tom Inzano are saving their family They’d look like any other family on the beach playing in the sand, if it weren’t for their radiator-sized mister on wheels constantly spraying water on the three-foot sculpture of a teeming coral reef scene. For “playing,” they look a bit more focused than the kids nearby with their green and yellow buckets and amorphous structures with moats. Of course, you’d also recognize the performance art domain of Riki and Tom Inzano by the ropes sectioning their area off from the rest of the Ka‘anapali Beach in front of the Westin. A versatile and enthusiastic artist, Riki had been involved in several mediums—papier mache, acrylic murals, cast wax for jewelry—before she began sand sculpture 10 years ago at the Denver Zoo’s Ocean Journey exhibit. Tom soon got in on the act, having done some awardwinning art himself in high school. They met seven years ago in Colorado, during a cardboard derby at Tom’s favorite ski resort. “Riki had never skied a day in her life,” Tom said. “But we met for cocktails later that day. It was destiny.” Later they got married on Maui, and the Inzanos vowed to return one day to pursue their sand whims. They continued their sculpturing, which was only temporarily halted when Riki became pregnant. Then last year they arrived with young toddler Ian in tow, and were immediately commissioned by the Sheraton in Ka‘anapali for an exhibit at the Maui Invitational, which then switched venues to the Westin, where they now hold court on Tuesdays for allday sand creation clinics. “We’re doing this so we can live on

Maui and spend time together,” Riki said. “And I love to inspire kids. In no other medium can you have a finished sculpture in one day. I just cannot put the time into permanent artwork anymore.”

“Most people don’t get to see the process,” Tom said. “To see art happening. And it can be a real traffic builder, as far as special events go. People wanna come back to see the end result.” Some sand sculptors use glue or lacquer to keep their structures intact. But the Inzanos want their art structurally solid and ecologically sound. They make it a point only to use water with the sand they’re forming.

“It’s harder,” Riki said. “And there’s not as much time. But we want to be conscientious of the reef. “We took a leap of faith to be here. But once you decide to do something, and you’re passionate for the gift you do, the elements come together.” Tom thinks beach performance artists, as opposed to other artists, are akin to the actors on Broadway versus movie actors, who have to wait three months to a year to find out if everyone likes their art or not. “It’s very inspiring when you’re working your butt off and people walk up and say, ‘Whoa! What are you doing?’” Tom said. “It’s good to get an immediate reaction.” But he considers Riki the primary artist in the family. “I defer 90 percent to her,” he said. “Very rarely does a guy get to meet a woman and be completely in awe of her talent. I’ve seen her art. There’s no question she’s a lot better. She can teach you everything.” “Aw! Thank you, baby,” Riki said. “He’s better in the kitchen though.” Riki’s designs are influenced mainly by Hawaiian culture and marine life, and she is convinced there’s no shortage of inspiration here. After all, they’ve been doing it 26 weeks in a row and have never

done the same sculpture twice. Just don’t ask them if they do sand castles. “Basically, I like organic things,” Riki said. “No buildings. Or material objects, I’ll usually put a face on it—anything to inject a little personality or fun.” “And anything with straight lines, she hands over to me,” Tom said, smiling. “I like to be whimsical,” Riki said. “And to make people smile, ‘cause art’s emotional.” Then a curious couple walked up to admire the Inzanos great feat of sand art. A small crowd gathered behind them, in awe of the mastery of the fine detritus of shoreline. “Who gets to kick it down?” one guy said. He was smiling—his wife who elbowed him was not. MTW

Make your life an open book, if necessary, and laugh when your detractors have to eat their own ill-considered distrust.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Sure, you can punish a kid for doing something bad, or reward her for being good, but ultimately this is absolutely the most limited way to prepare someone for a rich and fulfilling life. Forget consequences and treats, which might work on a small child but would never work on anyone able to think for himself. At some point, the only way to get a person to conform to your ideals or methods is to convince him that it’s simply the most satisfying or effective way to live life. If you can’t convince anyone of that, you have to ask yourself: why the hell did you choose it?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Leos, ruled by the sun, are sometimes as impossible to ignore as the massive ongoing nuclear reaction that sustains life on Earth. People do ignore the sun, though, or forget about it, or take it for granted. Clouds get in the way. Air conditioning cools them down, and they forget all about the warmth and radiance you offer. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) We’re moving ever closer to a transparent society. Lots of people blog, twitter, or otherwise document their lives. Although this has its down-sides, I think it’s mostly positive; greater transparency means greater accountability. The more people know about you, the more impressed they’ll be, and the more you know about them, the more choices you’ll have, like whether to nail their asses to the wall, or forgive them, for what they’re doing (or not doing).

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Information wants to be free, they say, and sometimes it breaks out and spreads virally, like the code that lets tech-geeks copy HD-DVDs. The supposed powers that be tried to censor it; consequently, it exploded all over the Interweb. Trying to cover something up or suppress it will only backfire, Libra. (Books banned by the Christian right, for example, often skyrocket up bestseller lists.) Secrets get out. You’re deluding yourself if you think yours will stay hidden forever. When information you don’t want known surfaces this week, don’t get in its way. It will just knock you down and continue on, stronger.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’ll find as you get older that you just get better and better. Some other signs find aging bewildering, and don’t know how to cope as they and their friends become old people and die. But Scorpios are more prepared for these inevitabilities, and so you’re not shocked by wrinkles and other signs of age. In fact, you can be a bastion of strength and support and guidance as people freak out. Scorpios need to ripen, I often say. That should be a comforting feeling, to know that every taste of you someone gets will, generally, be more satisfying and delicious than the last.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Anyone who’s determined can make a podcast. The genre’s exploded in the last few years, not because there’s money in it; very few people are living off their podcasts, and no one (as far as I know) is successfully charging people for them. And yet I still think you could call them a tremendous success, if you judge them simply on their variety, interactivity, and phenomenal creativity. What values are you applying to your life at the moment? Is the thinness of your wallet influencing your sensibilities? Please don’t let it. Assess things (and people) on the richness they bring to your life, not the riches.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Capricorns excel at selective deafness and deliberate ignorance. Sometimes you choose to dumb yourselves down or blind yourselves to certain things, in order to maintain the status quo. It’s not that you can’t cope with inevitable change, it’s that sometimes you’re the last ones to do so. Screw that. I’m fed up with your reputation as the intractable dinosaurs of the zodiac. The truth is you’re better equipped, resourceswise (financial, personal, and so on) than most of the rest of us to thrive in dynamic circumstances. I’ve never, ever doubted that you can. The question is: will you?

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) The scientific community, throughout the last century or two, has usually presented its findings as fact, when in fact they’re simply theories. We human beings actually don’t know much about anything, even though we sometimes act as if we’ve got it all figured out. Most people just accept what they hear without questioning it. You can’t be so generous. One of your jobs, Aquarius, is Bullshit Detector. This week, read between the lines, out loud, for the rest of us. Don’t be swayed by propaganda and unsubstantiated accusations or statements. We need the truth, and you might be the only one who can penetrate that far and share it with us.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Every Pisces I know uses coping mechanisms that ultimately make things harder on themselves. Getting wasted, to use an obvious example, might enable a grand night, but will make being productive and happy during the next day or two much harder. My advice? Take a month off from your crutches. Don’t drink, smoke, have cheap sex, or whatever it is you do to supposedly make life a little easier to bear. After 30 days without your comforts and buffers, you will know more clearly what you should add back in to make life better—and what you shouldn’t, because it does more harm than good, overall. Sure, that means you may have a rough month ahead of you, but it also means you’ll have a much easier life ahead of that.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) The Tyrannosaurus Rex we grew up with is a myth. So might be the one some paleontologists present now, but still they believe their theories to be closer to the truth: T.Rex was probably a slow-moving scavenger, not the roaring, monstrous predator that tickles our imaginations. The Aries most people have in their brains is a myth, too. Sure, just like the supposed king of the dinosaurs, you can have your impressive moments, and you’re certainly capable of being larger than life. But you’re also a million other things. Even though those other aspects are less dramatic than most Ram stereotypes, they’re no less relevant. Unravel some astrological prejudices this week by showing off some of your less obvious facets.

So what does this mean? We can’t change? We might as well give up? No, I don’t think so. It’s just that the change you’re contemplating might require a bit more effort than you’re putting in. You choose: Call it quits, or step it up three notches. There’s no point in simply continuing as you have. You’ll just fail.

WOODY: Pour you a beer, Mr. Peterson? NORM: All right, but stop me at one. Make that one-thirty. – From the TV series, Cheers I had the best of intentions, of course. In an effort to gain some clarity and focus on the possibilities of leaving Maui, and with the mountain of work that would entail, I tore away from my romantic and domestic life Upcountry and got myself a temporary abode, a block away from where I first lived on Maui a decade ago. Yes, I’m back in Lahaina. And yeah, I’m scared, too. One great thing about being back on the Westside is that I yet again get to ride my cruiser up and down Front Street. And so I did a lot of that, especially around sunset, when it’s time to join the aloha print-wearing, souvenir-searching, camera clicking masses at the rock wall in front of the Hard Rock. It’s also nice to be in close proximity to so many restaurants (some old, some new, some with bars attached) and to see long-forgotten friends (some old, some new, some attached to bars) with whom I have the most erudite and eloquent conversations. One night at Bamboo’s, bartender Rafi and Kim’s boytoy James discuss the high cost of living, the impossibility of saving, and the perils of selling sunglasses on Maui. Talk turns to international affairs, as Rafi goes on and on about Italian wines, the diminishing value of the U.S. dollar in recent Euro conversions, and how you should “never, ever as an American bring up the topic of soccer in Europe.” Then James brings it back home with the quandary of why AllState didn’t have enough money for Katrina victims but could dole it out for a Bon Jovi reunion. Meanwhile, a very friendly beer drinker named Tyler engages me in doubles pool in which we kick the lily-white asses of some hapless newlyweds on vacation. After the game, I feign recognition but can’t recall the name of some other red-faced dude who’s leering at me from the bar, so I promptly get on the cell and try to decipher crazy Krista’s long and rambling phone messageon-tequila from Oahu while a Japanese couple in matching outfits with orchid lei look in briefly then clutch hands and walk briskly away. Rafi switches the channel to “Whacked Out Sports” on TV, and tells a joke: “A guy goes to the doctor. The doctor says, ‘I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news. The good news is you’ve got 24 hours to live.’ And the guy goes, ‘Ohmigawd, that’s the good news? What could be worse than that?! What’s the bad news?’ And the doctor says, ‘I tried calling you yesterday but you wouldn’t answer your phone.’” As Rafi continues with the joke telling, an older, distinguished-looking chap buys us a round, then approaches my ol’ pool buddy Tyler and his bodaciously beautiful and blinged-out lady friend. “Hey, how you guys doing?” says the older man. “Damn, those are some big boobs!” Not too much later we end up at Hecock’s. Kim goes outside to smoke again and I consider taking up the habit. Instead, I sit at the bar and overhear a lovely young blonde girl say, “That’s why I don’t have kids—‘cause they’re just noisy calendars.” And Kevin, looking somewhat forlorn, sighs deeply. “I may be intelligent,” he says, “but I can’t learn after 20 times when a straight guy says he’s gay and I pay his rent, that’s it’s relevant.” Another perk of being back in Lahaina is that I’m once more within walking distance to a bunch of beaches, which is where good people on the Westside conveniently go to enjoy the inevitable fruits of their affably pernicious hangovers.
