I wanted to comment about “Beyond the Ink” but couldn’t find the email so I hope you don’t mind me writing to you directly. I love the podcast! It’s a great addition to your mag and I enjoy hearing the voices of “The Maui Times” (ha! just kidding) and I enjoy the “behind the scenes” look at the paper. I am a landscaper and filmmaker and spend at least seven hours a day listening to podcasts, so I listen to A LOT of podcasts and your podcast is one of my favorites. I anxiously look forward to the latest podcast every week. I don’t always have time to read your paper so the podcast is great for me to keep up on what’s going on and I love listening to a podcast about Maui. There’s not many of them out there. Sad to say, I didn’t know that [Mana‘o Radio founder] Barry Shannon died until I downloaded back issues of your podcast, about three weeks ago. I hope you guys keep up the podcast. So many of them come and go and I don’t want to see your show in the podcast graveyard. Keep up the great work. We are listening! The Drama of DU How one woman expressed outrage over depleted uranium in Hawai‘i The small room at the Kihei community center comfortably held the 12-person audience. They came on June 13 to see the Maui premier of Ten Fingers Ten Toes, a play written and produced by Registered Nurse Linda Fey Kroll about the toxic effects of depleted uranium (DU). DU is a radioactive byproduct of uranium enrichment. It ignites easily—for that reason, the U.S. military has used it extensively in weaponry throughout Iraq and other war zones. In 2006, spent DU ordinance were found at Schofield Barracks, leading to a controversy that shows no signs of dying down. Before the discovery of these munitions, the military maintained that it had never fired weapons with DU within the state of Hawai‘i. Activists and concerned parties question the public health risks involved in the unregulated firing of these weapons. In its solid state, DU is relatively harmless, the real problem occurs when it burns. DU ignites in temperatures as low as 600 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a fine dust the wind can carry for miles. The dust can then lodge itself in a person’s lungs and is suspected of causing serious health issues including birth defects, diabetes and cancer. Kroll is the sole actress in the play, and she’s on stage about 30 minutes. “I made it short because I wanted to get straight to the conversation,” she said later. In the show, Kroll plays four different women affected by a family member who becomes ill after returning from Iraq. The set was modest, consisting of a few colorful curtains and a chair. But

Kroll’s performance was nothing but. Her passion was apparent as she delivered each line. Many of her words were tinged with a hint of anguish over what she later said was her frustration at the lack of action on the issue. “What sane government would do this to its children?” she asked in the play. “Who is the monster now?” As she spoke she peered out from under a gray wig to the audience, holding a doll with no arms to illustrate a common birth defect. Kroll ended the play with tears in her eyes. Her voice wavered as she gripped the chair in front of her with white knuckles. “Every child has a God-given right to be born with 10 fingers and 10 toes,” she said. “We have to do something about this.” After a hearty round of applause, Maui District Health Officer Dr. Lorrin Pang took the stage. While he is a State Department of Health official, he stressed that he was speaking as a private citizen. There have been unconfirmed reports that his employment has been threatened as a result of him speaking out on the health effects of DU exposure. Pang discussed the fate of state House Bill 1452, which was to require testing of the soil around all military bases in Hawai‘i. It stalled in the Senate Ways and Means committee in April, which means the bill will not be heard again until next year. And he talked about where responsibility for DU contamination ultimately lies. “The [United States] military is the biggest unregulated dirty industry polluting our planet today,” he said.

Because the environmental status quo isn’t working A recent long airplane trip and pitiful in-flight movies afforded me the opportunity to catch up on some reading. For quite some time, I had been meaning to read Lester Brown’s Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble. The current updated version notes that media mogul Ted Turner found the book so important that he distributed more than 3,500 copies to heads of state, cabinet members, Fortune 500 CEOs and members of Congress. I’ve long been a fan of Brown, who founded Worldwatch Institute in 1974 and Earth Policy Institute (EPI) in 2001. Worldwatch, one of the first global think tanks to focus on global environmental issues, produced yearly State of the World reports, which provided sobering reminders of ongoing resource destruction from shortsighted human behavior. EPI dedicated its efforts to envisioning a global eco-economy and figuring out how to get there. Plan B 2.0 compiles and analyzes research on the planet’s converging ecological crises, and lays out a step-by-step plan to create an environmentally sustainable economy. Brown notes that for many years critics have pointed to the United States as the world’s most conspicuous consumer, with five percent of the world’s people consuming more than a third of the Earth’s resources. But China’s 1.1 billion people have now surpassed the U.S. in consumption of grain, meat, coal and steel. India, too, and other populous nations are following the Western economic model of fossil-fuel based, automobile-centered, disposable economies. And each year, the planet gets another 70 million new people. The U.S. population, now surpassing 301 million, has doubled in the past 50 years. Maui’s population— today 140,000 residents—has doubled in the past quarter century. Everywhere, the question facing government and society is whether we can respond quickly enough to prevent alarming trends from becoming full-blown catastrophes. The challenges discussed in Plan B 2.0 are daunting, ranging from the decline of cheap oil to worldwide fresh water shortages. We need ever more food to feed growing populations, but biofuel producers are eyeing farmland and residential developers are diverting agricultural water allotments.

The Liquor Commission has two jobs: approving the rules that govern the manufacture, distribution and sale in Maui County and granting licenses to sell alcohol. Mostly, they do the latter, which is why it’s disappointing to watch the commissioners act more or less clueless when new prospective licensees come before them to get approval.

Temperatures and ocean levels are both on the rise. Forests, host to entire unique ecosystems of endangered species—and our best converters of carbon dioxide—are shrinking. Topsoil is depleted or poisoned, rangelands are overgrazed, deserts are advancing, and fisheries are collapsing. Poverty, hunger and disease, such as AIDS, West Nile Virus and malaria, are advancing, despite our understanding of what is needed to address them. The social and economic gap between the world’s richest one billion and poorest one billion is unprecedented. Government is having trouble providing basic services, but population and resource conflicts are leading to anarchy and terrorism.

Case in point occurred during the June 13, 2007 meeting. About halfway through the agenda came the first of two public hearings for Blackie’s Pit Stop IV, a liquor store currently under construction in North Kihei, a little over 500 feet from the Kihei Charter School. But before the owners of Blackie’s could even take their seats at the witness table, commission chairwoman Frances Meshulam stopped the hearing.

How can we convey the urgency of this moment in history? Brown asks. Do we care enough to turn the tide? What immediate actions can we take to reduce our own impacts, and to help others understand the need to modify our collective behavior? Plan B 2.0 provides a blueprint to chart a course towards eradicating poverty, restoring the earth’s productive health, stabilizing climate change and feeding more than six billion people. But there’s no quick fix, guarantee or room for complacency. If my recent travels are an accurate indication, we’re nowhere near changing our course. First, there’s the irony of my flying

There I found myself pondering an elemental question: how many energy auditors does it take to change a light bulb… from incandescent to compact fluorescent? “Is there any interest?” Corporation Counsel Tracy Fujita Villarosa asked after a few awkward moments. “I think it’s just the name.” Gadarian still said nothing, the commissioners looked at each other some more and the hearing continued. When it came time for the commissioners to ask questions, Gadarian leaned forward to his microphone. “As a commissioner, I’ve got to dispel questions that have arisen about the name ‘Blackie,’” he said, apparently oblivious to the fact that commissioners had wondered about that very fact five minutes earlier. Then he explained that a few years ago a local businessman had asked him if he could call his liquor store “Blackie’s.” “The remuneration I’d get was the big sum of $10 a year,” Gadarian said. “I agreed… My ex-wife’s named all of her dogs ‘Blackie.’ I don’t mind that, though I don’t know about the dogs.” After that line, the commission’s preliminary approval was anticlimactic.

WATER FOR HC&S A&B’s affiliate Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) is a big company: its 37,000 acres worth of Maui sugar fields produces 60 percent of all raw sugar in the state. Those fields get water from HC&S affiliate East Maui Irrigation Co. (EMI), which dates back to 1876 when A&B founders Samuel T. Alexander and Henry P. Baldwin famously dug the mighty Hamakua Ditch. That ditch is long gone, but EMI today is a massive operation sucking up a huge amount of water, and it’s often considered the villain in the current Upcountry drought situation that has residents and small farmers there looking at mandatory 10 percent cuts in water usage. But on June 12 Warren Watanabe—president of the Maui Farm Bureau—reportedly told the county Board of Water Supply that EMI is no bad guy. In fact, Watanabe said that small farms like his “would not exist” were it not for EMI’s irrigation system, according to the June 14 Maui News. Now that’s public relations you just can’t buy.

SUPERFERRY GETS SUPER COVERAGE In the public relations-you-can-buy corner, we have Hawaii Superferry (HSF), partially funded by our very own Maui Land & Pine. Man, did it ever get its money’s worth by hiring super-public relations firm McNeil Wilson Communications. They sent out a press release early June 14 headlined “Hawaii Superferry’s Alakai Sets Sail For Hawai`i Today!” and within 24 hours, that exact story was in the Pacific Business News, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Honolulu Advertiser and Maui News (the last two papers carried essentially the same Associated Press story). All were positive stories with glowing quotes from HSF CEO John Garibaldi (only the Star-Bulletin bothered to get a quote that didn’t come with the press release). All minimized the news that Coast Guard inspections of the new vessel took considerably longer than the company expected, and none mentioned that a recent citizen-sponsored traffic simulation in Kahului showed that it’s very possible the new boat will dramatically increase traffic around the harbor. Hoku Materials has just agreed to a 10-year deal to supply polysilicon to Chinabased Suntech Power Holdings! The deal’s potentially worth $675 million! It’s globalism, baby! Innovation! It’s about trading with China, because of its fast growing economy! I mean, American companies big and small have been opening plants and selling junk—sorry, things—in China since 1972 when Richard Nixon played ping pong with Chairman Mao in Beijing. Too bad all that talk of how opening up the Chinese economy to western investment and trade would lead to democratic reforms. I mean, that turned out to be a royal crock, but hey, what’s wrong with a little company like Hoku making a quick buck in a

THURSDAY, June 14 The Honolulu Advertiser website reported today that Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s Whitehall real estate fund has bought a “substantial” chunk of Consolidated Resorts, Inc., which develops timeshares on Kauai and Maui. Of course, Goldman Sachs refused to disclose just what “substantial” meant, and it has that right, given that it controls so much land, wealth and power around the world that you’d think they invented money. In 2006 alone, the group reported $37.67 billion in net revenues and $9.54 billion in net earnings—so much money, in fact, that the company could afford to spread some of it around to, oh, the odd politician here and there. According to the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP), Goldman Sachs’ political action committee donated $3.4 million to candidates in 2006, 61 percent of which went to Democrats. In fact, since 1990, CRP reports that Goldman Sachs’ $24.9 million in assorted campaign donations makes it the eighth biggest political contributor in the U.S. And now they’re buying up Maui timeshares—doesn’t it just make you feel all warm and loved inside?

FRIDAY, June 15 Today marks yet another dark day in annals of American marketing and commerce. For today, newspapers around the country have reported that yesterday Ronco Corp. declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Yes, Ronco—founded in 1958 by marketing genius/late night infomercial king Ron Popeil, the company gave the world the Pocket Fisherman, Showtime Rotisserie, GLH Spray Hair and the VegO-Matic slicer. The company apparently owes $32.7 million to various creditors, including Popeil himself (he sold the company two years ago for $40 million in cash and a $16 million note, and according to the Los Angeles Times is still owed $11.8 million). No need to put those credit cards away, though—current Ronco CEO John Reiland told the Times that the company plans to stay open and keep all current employees, though that’s undoubtedly a limited-time offer so he’ll have to act fast.

How Goldman Sachs defines “substantial”

Awana, Governor Linda Lingle’s chief of staff, probably hasn’t had been on the news 10 minutes in the last two years, but this week he fell into a full-fledged media frenzy. And the really fascinating thing is that all the scandals and accusations surrounding him are at least a few months old. First there’s Awana’s still mysterious role in the Rajadatta Patkar case (you can read our take on the case in reporter Greg Mebel’s “The Strange Case of Bob Awana,” June 14, 2007). Patkar’s been in a Honolulu prison cell since March on charges of allegedly trying to extort $35,000 from Awana, who says he helped the FBI bring down a dangerous blackmailer (Patkar says he was just trying to protect a girl in the Philippines from Awana’s clutches—a charge Awana denies). And now today, the Advertiser has a story reporting that “last year” the fed “questioned” Awana “as part of an ongoing public corruption probe into a Saipan waste management contract awarded in 2002. Saipan? Waste management? 2002? Sounds bizarre, yet according to the story, Awana “denied the government’s accusations that he bribed government officials in Saipan to secure a contract worth more than $1 million to run a landfill on the U.S. territory from 2002 to 2007.” Awana hasn’t been charged. And what does Lingle have to

MONDAY, June 18 Speaking of which, reporter Seymour Hersh has a devastating story in this week’s The New Yorker reminding us yet again that the Bush Administration values slavish loyalty over honesty and accountability. It’s on the fate of U.S Army Major General Antonio M. Taguba, the former Hawai‘i resident who in 2004 headed the best, most incisive investigation of the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandal. Guess what? The Pentagon refused to go after any senior officers implicated in the scandal, but didn’t hesitate to kill Taguba’s career, leaving him no option except to tell Hersh how he really feels. “From the moment a soldier enlists, we inculcate loyalty, duty, honor, integrity, and selfless service,” Taguba told Hersh. “And yet when we get to the senior-officer level we forget these values. I know that my peers in the Army will be mad at me for speaking out, but the fact is that we violated the laws of land warfare in Abu Ghraib. We violated the tenets of the Geneva Convention. We violated our own principles and we violated the core of our military values. The stress of combat is not an excuse, and I believe, even today, that those civilian and military leaders responsible should be held accountable.”

There is little doubt that the money from ticket sales and player salaries of just one Major League game could help lift people in countries in Africa out of hunger and disease. We have the resources, but lack the conscience and the political will to change our ways. Achieving worldwide balance between food and people may depend on “stabilizing the population as soon as possible, reducing the unhealthy consumption of livestock produce in industrial countries, and restricting the conversion of food crops to automotive fuels,” Brown wrote. With 38 percent of the world’s grain harvest used to fatten animals for human consumption, our use of farmland and irrigation water resources is startlingly inefficient. Not surprisingly, health care costs are greater in countries with more than moderate meat consumption. All those ballpark hot dogs help put Americans near the top of the list for obesity, diabetes, heart disease and a host of other illnesses related to poor diet. Brown doesn’t view the trend to biofuels as a permanent solution, as he believes that we’re going to need almost all our agricultural resources to produce food. “The food and energy economies, historically separate, are now merging,” he wrote. “In this new economy, if the fuel value of grain exceeds its food value, the market will move it into the energy economy. As the price of oil climbs so will the price of food... Do we really want to subsidize a rise in food prices?” Wind power looms as a best choice for electrical energy generation. Wind is abundant, cheap, inexhaustible, widely distributed, clean and doesn’t affect our climate. No other energy

If we add to the gas-electric hybrid vehicle a second battery to increase its electrical storage—and a plug-in capacity so batteries can be recharged from the grid—motorists could then save gasoline for the occasional long trip. The batteries in the vehicle fleet become a storage facility for wind energy, leading to dramatic savings of gasoline and a reduction of carbon emissions. We’ll also need radical changes to resuscitate our devastated ocean fisheries. The creation of a global network of marine reserves, covering roughly 30 percent of the ocean’s surface, is clearly the overriding priority. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) recently placed a complete ban on fishing for certain species of snappers, including the popular onaga and opakapaka. Such measures, while appearing drastic to some, actually have a good track record of success. Marine reserves work, provided there is adequate enforcement to protect them. Brown sees the future of water as a real sleeper, though here on Maui we seem to get yearly reminders of the need to conserve what we’re fortunate to have. “Effectively managing underground water supplies requires knowledge of the amount of water being pumped and aquifer recharge rates,” Brown wrote. Locally, there has been no quantification of these studies since they were first requested back in 1988. Private well drillers continue tapping our diminishing resources, and our decision makers seem unaware of or unconcerned about the cumulative long-term effects. Few doubt that restoring the Earth will take an enormous international effort. And, says Brown, “such an initiative must be undertaken at wartime speed, lest environmental deterioration translate into economic decline, just as it did for earlier civilizations that violated nature’s thresholds and ignored its deadlines.” That’s the goal. But on Maui, we have to ask: are we moving fast enough?

VOX POPULI One party active in the recent elections in India’s Uttar Pradesh state represents the interests of “dead” people. Lal Bihari, 48, works on behalf of an estimated 40,000 living people who have been victims of relatives having declared them legally dead, usually in order to inherit their property, and once the government accepts such a declaration, the legal system in India is too slow, crowded and corrupt to bring that person back to “life.” Bihari himself “officially” died in 1976, and despite several schemes such as kidnapping a cousin in order to be arrested and thus proven to be living, he remained “dead” until his proof of life was accepted in 2004.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT Among the latest of Taipei’s quirkily styled restaurants (according to an April Reuters dispatch) is the D.S. Doctors said that abdominalmuscle cuts are painful and slow to heal, and that surgeons are considering using the body’s other natural openings, also, for some procedures. Still, a female New York University surgeon said the idea of gallbladder surgery through the vagina is “repulsive.”

LEAST COMPETENT JAILERS Timothy Rouse, 19—who had been charged with assaulting an elderly person— was matter-of-factly released from the Kentucky Correctional and Psychiatric Center in LaGrange in April after jailers accepted as official a crudely written, ungrammatical fax ordering him freed, supposedly from the state supreme court but whose originating line clearly showed a local grocery store. Furthermore, it took the jailers two weeks to realize they had been scammed. As it turned out though, cops easily re-arrested Rouse at his mother’s house.

JUST SHOOT ME Men continue to consider that having themselves shot (nonfatally, of course) might provide them sympathy and a valid excuse to avoid some unpleasant task. In February, John Amos wanted pal Emanuel Houston to shoot him, to get his upcoming rape trial in Martins Ferry, W.Va., postponed, but Houston refused, and the two then struggled over the gun until Amos forced Houston’s hand (and the gun) against Amos’ stomach and pressed on Houston’s finger. And in May, in Baltimore, police said two college students had a third shoot them so they could avoid an onerous fraternity hazing ritual, but then later confessed that they are National Guardsmen and had themselves shot to avoid deployment to Iraq. A National Guard spokesman said there is actually no deployment scheduled for their unit. MTW

Crime solving scientists and lab technicians are really popular on TV. Here’s what they’re like in real life.

ot long ago a young Japanese woman staying in Wailea for a wedding accidentally locked herself out of her hotel room. It was around 11 at night as she walked on the sidewalk through Wailea on her way back to the festivities. Walking quickly in the dark, a man riding a bicycle approached her. He began asking her questions, apparently attempting to lure her off the main highway. When he realized she was not going to cooperate, the man grabbed her and carried her into a nearby construction site, where he raped her. Oddly, after having his way with her, the man offered the woman a cold beer. She pushed it away, convincing the man to leave, then called the police. Being that it was a violent crime, the criminal investigative team, including detectives and evidence specialists, arrived on scene. Vincent Souki was one of the evidence specialists. According to Souki, at that time the Shops of Wailea had just been landscaped. As Souki and the rest of the investigative team studied the scene, they noticed that the perpetrator had left perfect footprints on the sidewalk while carrying the victim through the loose dirt. “This was an interesting case because there really was some great evidence left at the scene,” Souki said. “We took castings of the shoe prints and photographs of the mud prints on the sidewalk and we were able to determine his shoe size. I also recognized that they were mountain bike shoes.” Souki asked the victim to stay at the crime scene so he could take pictures of her injuries. He also collected forensic evidence, like pubic hair and dried semen that the man had left in her hair. Of all the rape victims that he had ever worked with, Souki explained, this woman was extremely lucid and brave. Along with giving a clear description of the wanted man, she even remembered to tell police about the perspiration on the beer bottle the man had offered her, clue-

ki u o S t Vincen ing in detectives to check the video footage at nearby liquor stores. After collecting the forensic evidence on the scene, Souki went to a local bike shop. An employee there told him that a pair of shoes similar to the ones Souki described had been stolen a few days prior. He was also able to describe the guy who had taken them. Two weeks went by. Then for some reason the man returned to the bike shop. The same employee who’d helped Souki was also working that day, and called 911. After a brief chase, the police were able to detain him. “There was a quick talk but his line was proven,” Souki said. “We collected DNA samples, sent them in and made all the connections, came back with all the evidence. We had the shoe prints, his hair and his cells. This was a case that all came together. “It just doesn’t happen in 45 minutes,” Souki added, smiling.

’m a crime solving geek. All my friends know it. I love detectives, forensics, defense attorneys and the psychology that lies behind criminal acts. My television time consists of watching shows such as CSI: Miami, CSI: Las Vegas, CSI: New York (I don’t discriminate or play favorites), Numb3rs and Bones. If there’s a corpse and a character similar to Horatio Cain, I’m invisible to the world. A few months ago I met with Lieutenant Glenn Cuomo of Maui’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and two of his evidence specialists, Souki and Anthony Earles.

Cuomo and I sat in his office and talked for a while. He told me he was retiring soon and that his emotions were mixed. He said he enjoyed his work because it gave him the “ability to right a wrong when possible.” He said his team was a vital part of solving crimes. “I really enjoy having the evidence technicians as part of my crew,” he said. As if on cue, Earles and Souki walked in, immediately creating an air of camaraderie within the room. After introductions, it became immediately apparent why Earles and Souki did what they did. The mood in the room was jovial, but both men seemed unusually attentive, as though they possessed a heightened cognizance most people lack. They couldn’t have been more different in appearance and mannerisms. Souki was well-built, garrulous and sharp; Earles was slim, reticent and perceptive. They were a bit like the odd couple, complimenting each other’s conduct the way opposites sometimes do. Forensic science, like all science, is forever changing. I wondered if Maui’s country lifestyle might hinder technological advancements within the CID’s cases. They said the department was really good about sending them to trainings and keeping them consistently up to date. “This is a small county, so the volume here is small,” Souki said. “Thank goodness. Therefore, we do not warrant a full service lab. Honolulu Police Department has the state lab facility. It depends on the case, sometimes we use Honolulu, a

Anthony Ea rles reference lab on the mainland or we also send some of our stuff to the FBI. We do the qualitative preliminary work, determine what’s worth sending to the lab and then send it out for the more specialized work. The lab technician’s jobs are very specialized. They are the ones that stay indoors and do all the bench work. They have ballistics people that just do ballistics, trace people that just do trace evidence, DNA people that just handle DNA.” Knowing so much about crime scene investigation on television, I started asking about some of the show’s more colorful claims. Was it possible to get a fingerprint off a lava rock? Did they have fancy computers in their cars that spit out Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) info within minutes? Did the evidence specialists frequently interrogate criminals and receive perfect testimonials to their crime? Cuomo said complicated print lifting did happen, but that there was a line regarding interrogations. Technicians normally did not do homicide interrogations, Cuomo said.

And Souki said there were no fancy computers in their cars, though they did have a big computer database. As a rule, none of the men watched any of the CSI shows, saying it “glamorized the job” and misled people, sometimes even in court. The biggest myth that the public struggled with, Cuomo said, was that people didn’t understand why the “CSI guys” didn’t appear at every crime scene. “Unfortunately, we can’t bring this kind of expertise to every case,” he said. They also don’t carry guns. “We don’t need to because the scene is secure and set up for us once we get there,” Souki said. “Things do take time, people really don’t get that. We do get good hits on our fingerprints, absolutely. But we can’t do it in 10 seconds.” Earles tentatively said he appreciated the awareness shows like CSI brought to the community. “Now the public has some idea but it’s not necessarily accurate so when they enter a courtroom as a juror, for example, they have an expectation that is sometimes unrealistic,” he said. “What I do see on CSI is that the

technical advisors that they use are very good,” Souki added. “Everything that they do is technically correct—it just happens too quickly. The public also thinks that because someone touched a gun, there will be a clear fingerprint. Not necessarily. There are a lot of factors.” Maui PD’s CID does have some similarities to its Hollywood imitations. They can call upon a forensic entomologist (bug doctor) if they need to. They can get accurate time of death from Dr. Lee Goff, who runs the forensics program at Chaminade University on Oahu. Once they sent him a mass of maggots for drug analysis. According to Souki, the State of Hawai‘i is now using a DNA database for felony convictions. With over 30,000 convicted felons in the state— not all of whom are currently incarcerated—it’s extremely helpful for the CID in solving certain crimes or even identifying corpses. Detectives now carry Buccal kits so they can take DNA samples, or epithelial cells, from felons as they are being processed.

Police Department building in Wailuku. The first room we stopped in was a conventional office, which both men use for report writing, drawing computer-aided design (CAD) diagrams and photo analysis. Off that was another room holding files and arrest packets, one for the woman who handles latent fingerprints or the AFIS program and one more for dealing with forensic evidence. Darna Miguel, Maui PD’s Fingerprint Identification Technician, works the AFIS computer. Searching for a print is not a simple, quick, computerized process. Basically, when the evidence specialists retrieve a latent print at a crime scene, they enter it into the AFIS system, where it’s matched against the tens of millions of prints already in the system. If there’s no match, it comes back labeled Jane or John Doe. From there, Miguel gets a candidate list. It’s now her job to compare the latent print against the list. This can be extremely time-consuming. “Nobody is depending on a computer to make an ID anywhere,”

Souki said. “A human being has to make that call.” The last room, with access controlled by a double lock system, was the crime lab itself. Inside I found trajectory kits, fingerprint powders, Buccal swab kits, Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) tabs, chemicals such as Luminal (it finds blood traces that aren’t visible), metal detectors, Alternate Light Source (ALS) devices for trace evidence and a drying cabinet that had bloody pajamas hanging inside. It was at once a sobering reminder that solving crimes is far more morbid than glamorous. I asked Souki and Earles to describe the most unpleasant parts of their jobs. “Probably the worst thing is when

you pick someone up and their skin is sliding off of them,” Souki said without blinking. “It’s not always pleasant. The smells can be pretty bad sometimes, too.” We all agreed that their job, although technical, could be extremely morose when dealing with human mortality. “Of course it’s challenging at times but I really love the problem solving aspect of the job,” Earles said. “You are always having to test your senses.” Souki agreed. “I like re-constructing a scene,” he said. “Piecing it together and seeing if it corroborates with the story, is really an interesting part of the casework. You will sometimes get conflicting information but evidence is solid and it doesn’t lie.” MTW

Where you’re free to embrace your inner hippie Alive & Well in Kahului is one of the few places on Maui that’s actually taught me something about myself. I’ve only recently started to go there, but every time I’ve gone in, I’ve run into someone I know.

Then a while later I was eating near the deli counter and saw my friend Kristen walk in and start checking out the menu. Not long after I saw Lena in ordering a smoothie. Then there was the time I saw Samantha, my own associate editor (okay, this one is only technically true, as she and I went there together for lunch one day, but you get the picture). At first, I thought this was strange. I’d always thought of Alive & Well as a perfectly good health food store for hippies—free thinking nature lovers who embraced organic brown rice, hemp, and aisle shelves stocked with more teas than a person could try in a

lifetime. In other words, not my kind of place. Yet I kept running into people I knew there—people who shopped and ate there and didn’t seem even remotely hippie-like. Could it be that I had been wrong? All this soul searching got started when Ohana Café—Alive & Well’s tiny Wailuku breakfast and lunch nook— closed its doors last month. I’d gone into this place—located just around the corner from the Maui Time offices— pretty near once a week ever since we’d moved to Wailuku Town last year. I couldn’t get enough of their triple-decker club sandwiches, garden burgers, roasted vegetables, papaya seed dressing, kim chee… Anyway, when they closed, they posted a sign in the door saying Alive & Well was still up and running. So one day, I went. Inside I found—in addition to myriad friends and co-workers—an impressive deli counter stocked with a colorful variety of fresh food (as well as a wonderful sign reading “Please pay for food before you eat it. Thank you”). They have sandwiches, salads, wraps, soups, sushi (made with brown rice), vegetables, quiche, meatloaf, jicama salad, pizza, soft serve ice cream, pies and a bunch of other stuff I can’t think of right now. One day I ordered a turkey sandwich on oat bread. It came with about a halfinch of sliced turkey with lettuce, tomato, sprouts, carrot shavings, onions and mustard (you can also get mayonnaise and wheat bread, if you like). To that I

added a small bowl of tasty roasted cauliflower and potato soup—which wasn’t too thick, thin or potatoey). Their other soup of the day was white bean and turkey sausage, but I’m pretty sure I made the right choice. Another time I dove into a slice of their spinach pie, which though thick, didn’t flood my taste buds with all things spinach. That particular item’s so popular they usually have a few fresh slices already packaged on the deli case. And they have desserts. Most recently I tried a slice of their cinnamon spice almond cake. Though not quite as sweet or interesting as their “raw vegan organic” mixed fruit pie (mango, kiwi, strawberries, coconut, pecans and hemp), it was outstanding. What’s more, Alive & Well is open all day. By the time I learned that, I hardly missed the closed-after-2 p.m.-and-onweekends Ohana Café anymore. Hot Asian Beat Saturday (June 23), 7 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [MUSIC/CULTURAL] When I was preggers with my daughter, her daddy and I went to watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with some friends at the Kukui Mall in Kihei. What I remember most about that night is that I got major indigestion from too much Chinese food, and thought that my unborn kid was going to karate-chop herself right out of my uterus. This near-disaster happened during that fight scene between the two badass martial arts divas and involved a whole lot of drumming. If you’re looking to induce labor, or maybe hoping to start the whole pregnancy process (I don’t know about you, but drumming turns me on), head over to the MACC and catch Zenshin Daiko’s 8th annual Taiko Festival. Maui’s Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko will open the show, then Zenshin Daiko and Portland Daiko will follow with a mix of dance and drum as well as contemporary, traditional Okinawan and Japanese music. The Art of Movement Saturday (June 23), 7 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel, Wailuku [ART/PARTY] Thirteen mostly local artists will be showing off their moves on the walls of Café Marc Aurel’s in a group art show in Wailuku this weekend. Young artist Hannah Shimabukuro used photos of student war protesters and print process that is at least 150 years old to convey “movement,” the show’s theme. In muted tones of blue and brown, her piece communicates the shifting of ideals. David Whitney, a repeat contributor to the café’s art shows, had yet to decide on a specific piece to display, but said the challenge of this show is to create something that implies physical movement without actually moving. Scott Olsen’s drawing suggests what he calls, “the marks of occurrence” or the invisible lines of energy left behind after an action. “This drawing was inspired by a crumpled brown paper bag that had been repeatedly stepped on. Like a paper car crash,” he told me. For a group show like this one, interpretations of the theme are bound to be varied. I’m not sure how all of it will come together, but one guarantee is that attendees will spend an evening in true Café Marc Aurel’s style: with art on the walls, wine in the glasses and sophistication in the air. All the artwork on display will be for sale, and none will be priced higher than $199. Curator Katherine Godwin of Hui Press Publications promises a rad soundtrack for your listening pleasure and much remarkable artwork that challenges the geometric boundaries of visual art. Things get exciting when Enslin reads a news clipping about a mysterious “Room 1408” in New York’s Dolphin Hotel, where more than 50 guests have perished. With his curiosity properly piqued, our plucky author disregards the earnest warnings of the hotel manager Mr. Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), and enters the room with tape recorder in hand. The alarm clock begins a one-hour countdown as walls move and the landscape of the room becomes a demonic presence taunting the author to lose hold on his already loosened sanity. The triumph of 1408 rests squarely

on John Cusack’s perfectly pitched performance as an unshakable disbeliever repeatedly pushed to the brink of suicide by memories of his own past. Room 1408 presents a psychological, paranormal and physical juggernaut that will curl your insides in knots. Separated from his wife Lily (Mary McCormack) after the tragic loss of their daughter Gracie, Enslin masks his concealed personal crisis by immersing himself in his work. Here is a man attempting to displace his own reality with other people’s imaginary demons to overcompensate for his slipping grip on reason. It’s an effective gambit until the demons become real. Observing paranormal occurrences is not as prosaic and charming as our protagonist might have imagined. And so it is for the audience that the scares we have waited for turn out to be more potent than we imagined. Unable to escape from the room’s door, Cusack’s unraveling character puts aside visions of former visitors leaping from the window as he climbs out onto the ledge in the hope of reentering the hotel from an adjacent room. On the surface, it seems like a classic scary movie trope when the hotel’s windows vanish and Enslin is left facing nothing but brick, however the visual slight-of-hand works like a magician’s trusty card trick. Like the Jack Nicholson character in The Shining, Enslin suffers from a psychosis that his immediate environment exacerbates. Right up until the end of the movie, it’s unsure how much of the roommorphing episodes are real and how many

are cooked up in the character’s plagued subconscious mind. Special effects supervisor Paul Corbold (Children of Men) metes out the room’s slippery descent into hellish realms with a modulated crescendo of violence that gently bruises your psyche before walloping it with a concussive double climax. The devil is in the details, and in Room 1408 every nightmare element holds a deeper meaning to the secret of Enslin’s mental breakdown that drops him in rough seas within a cracking ship. John Cusack is such a polished performer that it’s easy to forget how effec-

tive he can be at creating characters capable of emphasizing extreme emotional and physical states. Here, the actor delivers a tour de force performance that punctuates the survival aspects of the story every time the camera focuses on his pained facial expressions. There is plenty of Freudian subtext that Cusack’s character mocks as an invitation to the emotionally cathartic experience he subconsciously demands. You’ll have to think your way through this thriller as it twists like the road to Hana, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat the whole time. MTW

Elan Vital Gallery’s War and Peace exhibition Tom Sewell had something to say. His latest work, entitled “I Can No Longer Remain Silent,” displays an American flag in which the stripes hold the faces of 3,200 American soldiers killed in the Iraq war, while a video scrolls close-ups where the flag’s stars would be, and Gorecki’s “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” plays along. But Art Maui didn’t want to hear it. They rejected the piece by Sewell— a prominent artist they’ve repeatedly featured—in this year’s prestigious annual exhibit. “That’s what started this whole thing,” said Tim Garcia, another artist who, along with Sewell’s wife Michelle, began looking for a space in which they could show similar works of war and peace by other local artists. “That [piece] brings me to tears everyday, especially if I’ve read the paper that morning.”

Garcia’s own installation is in another room of the expansive labyrinth that makes up the Elan Vital Gallery in Makawao. “Peace Poles” consists of two eight-foot stands of black Japanese pine, on which the word “peace” is printed in 200 different languages. He laughingly points out a recent discovery that a single crack—the only one—has developed through the English spelling. “Mother Nature is telling us to get our act together,” he said. “Peace is not American. It’s not Judeo-Christian. It’s like the air we breathe—free, and we should have it.” In “100 Years, 100,000,000 Lives,” a striking scratchboard triptych by Ed Lane, warlords, tyrants and leaders throughout history from Kaiser Wilhelm to Adolf Hitler and Tojo are depicted side by side. “It examines the minds of some of the world leaders who have caused over a hundred million deaths in the last 100 years, and some of the stupidities,” Lane said in the video, The Artists’ Voices. “And there are historic quotes from these people that make you realize how sick their minds really are. And I just would like people

to pause and consider that for awhile.” Bob Getzen’s lithograph, titled “Fuck Those Who Scream For War in the Name of Peace,” was actually done in 1965. At the time, Getzen was an art major at San Diego State. The head of the art department told him he loved the piece and sent a copy to the president, which, Getzen joked, may have helped him get drafted. “The piece represents the concept that the government wants us to believe that war is for peace,” Getzen said in the same video, “and that never seems to happen.” The War and Peace exhibit is large and growing, much to the delight of Garcia and Michelle Sewell. But not all pieces are heavy or depressing. Many employ pithy titles, like the “Not So Smart Bomb” oil painting by Javier Martinez, or Nancy Skrimstad’s mixed media “This War is as Ridiculous as a Nude Ballerina Wearing a Viking Helmet for Protection.” Garcia said when he needs a little lightness, he heads to the “Kids’ Room,” which is a display of the project spearheaded by Haleakala Waldorf School to commemorate the Dalai Lama’s recent visit to Maui. prints and books of poetry. Garcia said it’s many people’s favorite exhibit. And then of course there’s Lish and Levi Pepperjack’s anti-war installation, “Baghdad Dad Bag,” a sardonic take on the iconic souvenir T-shirt. “It’s a comment on tourist soldiers, it’s a comment on tourist economy,” Lish said. “It’s an attempt to put in a little humor to something that’s totally not funny.” “Most people who join the army are not professional soldiers nowadays,” Levi said. “They go in so they can get an education; they go in so they can get some benefits, see the world. So they’re not really professional soldiers, they’re really more like tourists. They think they’re gonna spend a little time in Korea, a little time in Germany—they never really thought about spending a little time in Iraq.” The War & Peace exhibition will be showing through June 29, noon to 6 p.m. (later for special events) daily at the Elan Vital Gallery, 1134 Makawao Ave., Makawao. However, those chapters of constancy and routine, though less exciting, are chances to get a lot done. You haven’t steered for calmer waters in a while, since you generally (secretly) prefer stormier seas. But as you have an awful lot going on right now, perhaps this is a good time to sail your boat into some tranquil port to make repairs, and simply get shit done?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) For some Leos in relationships, the other person barely matters. These Lions don’t so much especially love their partners; they love themselves, with that person. I don’t expect all of you to utterly shatter the mirror you always hold up to yourselves, but some Leos really do need to cut it down to a smaller, more manageable size. (You know who you are.) See past your own reflection long enough to notice people in their own lives, not simply for the parts they play in your grand drama. So often, we see simply what we think we’ll see, whether it’s there or not. This week, work on stripping down some of your filters, and trying to dispassionately perceive things more as they are. If you must delude yourself by seeing things that aren’t there, at least conjure images that will empower you, not frighten or intimidate you.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Every sign evolves, naturally. Leos mellow out and become more modest, generous and loving. Capricorns become more charmingly childlike with every passing year. And Libras learn how to leave things out of balance. While equilibrium is certainly a pleasant state, it isn’t especially conducive to change. It’s also—when you’re the one providing the balance to a situation—quite limiting. You only get to be what the group dynamic, job, or relationship requires, instead of fulfilling your true potential, which is likely much, much more than what’s being asked of you in any given moment. I’ve been mostly vegetarian for 17 years. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with eating meat (though don’t get me started on the damnable horror of factory farming). That’s nature. Animals eat each other. I’ve simply made a choice that’s right for me, and I wouldn’t think to impose it upon anyone else (though I would encourage everyone to consume free-range animals, for your health and soul). It’s quite likely your decisions are right for you, and only you. Insisting that someone else follow your exact path is robbing them of the freedom you enjoyed when you chose it in the first place. Don’t do it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Some people think that dreams access some other plane of reality; others assume they simply tap into some internal wisdom not consciously available. Many people use their dreams to ask questions they don’t know the answers to in waking life, and get answers that surprise, inspire and enlighten them. In my experience Sagittarians—notoriously relentless truth-seekers—are the best at this. The answer to your life’s current most burning question might not be found in your dreams (though I’d look there first), but it will almost certainly be found someplace nearly as unusual.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) What are you, a Pisces? Suddenly, you’re as giddy and distracted as a virgin on prom night. Perhaps it’s next week’s Full Moon in your sign, or maybe you’re preoccupied with some other big event, so you can’t focus all your attention on the present moment. Snap out of it, Cap. We need you to be in especially sharp form this week, to cut through some of the spin and bullshit that’ll be flying our way. What is it that’s buying up so much of your mental real estate? Is it anything you can do anything about now? No? Then take your thoughts off the market and bring them to bear on the situation on hand, which you can dominate and own—if you actually show up.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Pirates are huge these days. Like other similar recollections of past eras (renaissance fairs, for example), popular perception of pirates reflects a sort of “best of” mentality. We take (and exaggerate) the best bits, and ignore or leave out the rest. You’re good at this, aren’t you? You romanticize memories so well, you end up pining over someone who actually made you miserable at the time. It’s nice to remember the sweet moments; just don’t forget the shit, too, lest you lose perspective. Spinning a fairy tale out of pirates and knights is one thing. Making one out of your past relationships, though, is nothing short of disaster.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Despite my frequent Pisces-bashing, you should know I adore you. You seem to operate in another, parallel reality which differs from ours in many subtle, incredible ways. This is occasionally confounding or bewildering, but also almost always fascinating and inspiring. That’s a gift. Just by being yourself, you get to encourage us to experience life in ways we might have had trouble imagining before. If you could also be on time or develop some consistent stick-to-it-iveness, that’d be great. But never forget your true strength: you’re weird and unique in how you live and see the world. Sharing that truly outweighs all the rest.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You’re like a plant whose leaves are drooping from lack of water. Unfortunately, no one’s noticing, and endless blue skies indicate no rain for days. Since when did you start letting yourself get shut down? I know those holding you back insist you ought to not require so much water and sunlight (or love and affection) to live and thrive. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) How comfortable are you inside your own skin, your own life? Some Taureans still maintain a certain façade to hide their true selves. When people are coming over, for example, you clean the house the way you never would for yourself, hiding the porn and junk food. A lot of that has to do with simply making your guests comfortable, but at least some of it reflects a kind of certainty that people will only like a cleanedup, more “acceptable” version of you. That’s selling most of your friends short. Let us see the real you. We’ll like it, I promise—and you’ll like us liking it, because that means more fun and intimacy all around.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Geminis hate missing out on anything. You hear music, fireworks, excitement or chaos down the street, and you’re off like a flash, dropping whatever you were doing without a second thought. You hate it when you hear about something exciting your friends did that you totally missed out on. It might’ve been love at first sight but I took my time to commit. I was afraid of settling down with you, of getting too comfortable, of not fulfilling some sense of meaning for myself. I was afraid you’d make me barefoot and pregnant with a mortgage I could barely afford, and that I’d have to learn how to make li hing mui pancakes and chicken mochi lau lau. I am constantly in awe of your beauty. Physically, you’re perfect: Your taut, sun-kissed skin, your chiseled features, the aesthetically amazing ambiguity of your ancestry, your strong arms from paddling and lifting and climbing, your strong legs from kicking and running and dancing. I love the light in your eyes, and how they sometimes get red and puffy from surfing or smoking weed. And you do like your weed. I love your sense of humor. You’re goofy. I love how you play the ‘uke, singing songs about fishing and surfing and your children. I even love your fixation with reggae. I love how you love women, how you make me feel beautiful, like your queen. I love how accepting you are of me, even though you don’t quite understand where I’m coming from most of the time. I didn’t want to become attached but I couldn’t resist. It was that falsetto, I think. Most would be attracted to your strong, symmetrical features. I was more attracted to the imperfections of your beauty, the cracks beneath the surface, the scars, the bruises, the sadness and wisdom in your eyes. Once I did decide to stay, you welcomed me with open arms. You gave me the freedom I craved, and more love than I knew what to do with. But your love proved duplicitous. With so much transience in your life, you have deepseated abandonment issues, and defensively try to hold onto things—and people—that you shouldn’t. It took a while for me to realize that the hurt you feel might be too deep for me to heal. The abyss you sometimes spiral towards is like a tornado, gaining momentum and destroying the good things you still have left in your life. I still have faith you can pull out of it, but I feel like I could easily get stuck in your mire if I stay a moment longer. I believe you have some things to sort through on your own. You know, there’s the drinking—although it seems to just be “a social thing,” it is really affecting other areas of your life now. Same with the drugs. Then there’s that dreadful Peter Pan syndrome, and your odd mix of exaggerated ego and a passive-aggressive inferiority complex. There’s your lack of organizational skills and time management, your laziness. Yeah, you’re kind of a slob—I mean, you just leave shit everywhere! Plus, and maybe most importantly, there’s your inability to let go of the past in order to focus on making a better future for yourself—a greater independence, financial stability and more responsible planning. Let’s face it, baby, you’re a little immature, but you’re not young anymore. You should know better, and I believe you do, but you seem unwilling to let bygones be bygones. I know you can move past this. I believe in your strength, your resilience. I admire your courage, the depth of your love for family, your loyalty, your appreciation of culture and the arts, music especially, and your reverence for the ocean. Every day I see you, I cry—knowing that soon we will part. No more daily smiles and your warm embrace. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. But I have to leave you now. And I know you’ll let me go, with your blessings, but maybe I’m the one who’s afraid to be set free. You’ve loved me enough that I feel like I can. But I’m scared to be without the comfort of your love. Someday I hope to come back, stronger, wiser and better equipped to love you and maybe, just maybe, the two of us can grow old together. We still have right now though—I won’t be leaving for another month. Let’s try to make the most of our time together, before I branch off to do whatever it is I’m meant to do.
