PISSED AT PEOPLE WHO DO THEIR JOB The following letter is in response to the June 12 Restless Native “Here’s to You Mr. Ticket Writer”

Voted best full service Salon 2006 & 2007 by maui magazine - thanks to our loyal clients!

I found Starr Begley’s infatuated commentary on “Mr. Ticket Writer” officer Keith Taguma to be unenlightened and repulsive. Anyone who visits or works in Wailuku town is acutely aware of Taguma’s morbid dedication to his job which he performs with particular swagger. Ms. Begley’s admiration and misplaced sympathies for Taguma displays an egregious disregard for his domestic violence victim, as well as an ignorance of the other well deserved monikers he hails by. Like other petty militants that used the poor excuse of “only doing my job,” or “just following orders” to justify a sadistic discharge of their duties, Officer Taguma is also commonly referred to around Wailuku as the “Nazi.” Unfortunately for the community (which does not deserve what it gets) and in spite of Ms. Begley’s amorousness for him, this is a more apropos summation of Taguma. And, yes, there’s nothing funny about that. -Janet Riley, Wailuku

I have lived and worked in Lahaina for over 6 years and never went a day without seeing uncle phil under the tree. He was the true spirit of Lahaina. He knew the true meaning of Aloha and when he said God Bless you to me I felt like he meant it. It is said to think we will never see him again, yet his spirit is there...I can still hear him singing and playing his guitar and yelling out “God Bless You” to a passerby… -Bonnie via Mauitime.com

I lived in Lahaina all of my life & the Lahaina Street Preacher NEVER bothered me. I felt humbled every time I passed him and received a smile or a simple “God Bless You”. What troubles me now are the businesses that were bothered by the beautiful message he was sending. It makes me feel like those employees/business owners could not handle the simplicity and truth of his words. As it is written: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will also keep yours. But they will do all these things o you on account of My name, because they don’t know the One who sent me.” John 15: 19-21 Aloha Uncle Phillip...a hui hou -Kim Chang via Mauitime.com I searched you out the day before you died. You prayed for my mom, and you laid hands on me and prayed for me and my Ohana. You put my spirit at ease with your words and the Lord’s Prayer. Mahalo nui loa Braddah Phillip. May your spirit shine eternally with God. Aloha. -Jami via Mauitime.com Aloha bradda Phillip. You will be missed. I know you are in a better place now with the One you’ve longed to see. “See I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to repay all according to their deeds. Castle & Cooke

OWNED Castle and Cooke, the Rupert Murdoch-owned development and luxury resort mega-corporation busted into the top 10 this week following a story in Pacific Business News stating the company owns 98% of Lanai. Can that be right? I knew they had a pretty big stake in the island owning both Four Seasons resorts, but 98%?! The article goes on to say that C&C is planning to take the whole island off the grid in the next few years with a massive photovoltaic project. The first, a 1.5 megawatt beauty set to begin operation this year, will provide almost a third of the island’s peak time power needs and a tenth of annual electricity overall.

SHIPS AHOY Matson Navigation Co. jumps another couple of spots with the announcement that the state will sink almost $120 million into Kahului Harbor over the next 6 year as part of Gov. Linda Lingle’s harbor improvement initiative. The improvements will mean more room and smoother operations for the state’s largest shipping company. As part of the Hawaii Harbors Users Group, which was instrumental in getting the bill passed, Matson will no doubt also have a seat in the newly formed Harbors Modernization Group. Unfortunately for customers, more rate increases may be on the horizon. Following a fuel surcharge hike last week, Matson may be looking at higher rents to help the State pay off the bond it issued for the project for the 2009 budget. No doubt that will trickle down to consumers. MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com I sure hope you got where you were going. Needless to say I did not get where I was going. Didn't you realize that a human being was riding the bicycle that you whizzed around in the right turn lane going north on S. Kihei Rd. at Lipoa about 12:30 that day? It is illegal to pass any vehicle that you are in the same lane with at the time of passing. There is no bike lane at that part of the road and I had every right to be using that lane. You passed me so close I touched your car, veered right and fell left. My head hit the pavement so hard that my head was cut open! I had to be taken on a backboard in an ambulance to the hospital in Wailuku. I got several stitches, a nasty headache and missed 3 days of work plus got a hefty hospital and ambulance bill. All because you just had to turn right at that light before it turned red.

Safe to Eat? Farm Bureau sponsors panel discussion Last Saturday at Maui Community College’s Pa`ina Building, the Maui County Farm Bureau sponsored the “Business-2-Business Agriculture Fair,” geared towards introducing buyers to Maui grown products. Nearly forty local farmers and producers attended, displaying their array of goods to potential businesses including Long’s, Whole Foods, Pukalani Superette, Mana Foods, and others. The event featured a three-person panel discussing the issue of food safety, as expanded food supply networks seem to have compounded the potential risks for widely spreading diseases associated with tainted foods. Two years ago, an E. coli outbreak attributed to bagged spinach killed three people and sickened more than 200 in 20 states, ranging from California to Maine. More recently, tomatoes infected with salmonella have caused nearly 400 people in 30 states to fall ill. While parts of Florida and Mexico are suspected to be the most likely sources of the tomato contamination, Food and Drug Administration officials admit that it may be impossible to trace the ultimate origin. “Think of food safety as an insurance policy for your farm”, said Jim Hollyer, Ag Economist with the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. Having visited over 120 farms statewide, Hollyer described his role as that of a “food safety coach”. He helps farmers and processors prepare for a third party audit that may allow them to achieve food safety certification. Both E. coli and salmonella are bacteria associated with the intestines of animals. The spinach outbreak of 2006 was ultimately traced to wild pigs trampling through cattle manure on their way to breaking down a fence and grazing in a California spinach patch. Panelist Geoff Haines of Pacific Produce Hydroponic Farms confirmed that fencing was his largest single cost associated with achieving certification. Haines, who grows five acres of hydroponic lettuce, said, “It’s probably easier for me, because all my product is grown up off the ground. We package directly in the fields, have potable water, and never let a box touch the ground.” Haines said getting his workers

involved with the system is key, with regular log sheets for what they do. Now boxes of lettuce sold to Safeway and elsewhere contain a product code that can be traced back to the individual growing bed, worker, and date harvested. Shirley Watanabe, of Watanabe Vegetable Processing on Naalae Road said the farm audit process was “the worst thing that has happened in my life.” With Valley Isle Produce encouraging them to do it, her audit took nine and a half hours. “It was awful,” she said. Watanabe, who is not currently certified, said a farm audit would be much easier than the Hazard Analysis Critical Concern Points (HACCP) examination for their processing facility. She said the Cook & Thurber food safety evaluation was 53 pages long, “and some of the questions are downright ridiculous.” As the need to increase local food production is starting to appear on people’s radar screens, the cost of this type of safety assurance may appear to be yet another financial burden for small farming operations. Claire Sullivan, buyer representative for Whole Foods, said providers selling to them would need to carry a one million dollar liability policy. Sullivan said their research indicated such coverage could be obtained for 500 dollars yearly, or 40 dollars per month. Hollyer also noted that those shipping to Oahu would also need to consider COOL packaging (Country Of Origin Labeling), and that most growers don’t know the applicable laws and are labeling products incorrectly. While sipping his Pepsi, Hollyer noted that he spent Memorial Day in his bathroom after consuming some “unsafe” food. Still, many consumers never think to ask how long a saran-wrapped Spam musubi has been sitting out, or how long prepared bento box lunches have been basking under heat lamps. And, who’s protecting us from the ingredients in that Pepsi? That pervasive cultural icon of sugary sweetness and caffeine seems worthy of the same level of scrutiny given to our Mom & Pop farm operations. What are the long term effects of consuming caramel color, phosphoric acid, citric acid, aspartame, sodium benzoate and acesulfame potassium found in Pepsi and Pepsi One? The adage “You are what you eat” provides words to live by. The Farm Bureau deserves kudos for helping show the benefits, and the challenges, of eating Maui grown foods. MTW

ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

“DROWNING IN SOUND” he world’s oceans are reeling under a myriad of impacts. A large part of this is due to man’s tampering with the vast ecosystem resources covering two-thirds of planet Earth. According to landmark reports issued by the Pew Oceans Commission, 30 percent of coral reefs are gone, 80 percent of krill stocks are gone, and 90 percent of the ocean’s large fish have been over-fished. Speaking last week at the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Ocean Discovery Center in Ma`alaea, Dr. Marsha Green spelled out the expanding awareness of another human-caused impact: underwater noise pollution. Green, a Professor at Fulbright College and President of the Ocean Mammal Institute, started talking about this topic back in 1998 on Maui, where she has conducted research since 1986.

T

enowned oceanographer Jacques Cousteau referred to the vast undersea ocean regions as, “The Silent World” (also the title of his 1953 best-selling book,) Green reminded us. But today, it is anything but silent, with a cacophony of clatter emanating from ship traffic, underwater drilling and demolition, seismic air guns from oil and gas exploration, and Navy Mid-Frequency and LowFrequency Active Sonar testing. Water’s density means that it transmits sound much more effectively than air. Indeed, swimmers diving

R

down in Hawaiian waters during whale season may easily hear the songs of humpback whales, possibly from miles away. Like many other ocean mammals and other creatures, the humpbacks depend upon subtle auditory cues to interpret the undersea world around them. Drowning in Sound, the Ocean Noise Coalition’s new pamphlet, maps out more than 17 locations worldwide of marine mammal strandings associated with known sonic activity. Instances in the pamphlet include the 2004 incident involving 200 disoriented melon headed whales in Hanalei Bay, Kauai during U.S. Navy maneuvers in nearby waters. Other mass strandings have occurred several times in the Canary Islands, from 1985 through 2004, and most notably, in the Bahamas in 2000. In that episode, said Green, 30 beaked whales, two minke whales, and one spotted dolphin stranded themselves. Coincidentally, one of the dying whales beached itself in front of the research station of Kenneth Balcomb, who runs the Bahamas Marine Mammal Survey on the island of Abaco. Balcomb and his colleagues persuaded a local restaurant to put whale carcasses in the freezer to be studied later. A specialized team performed CT scans of the beaked whales heads, and the auditory damage was clearly evident. The XRay studies revealed bleeding around the inner ears, brains and lungs, with trauma to other tissue. It provided the first clear evidence of injury to marine mammals connected to U.S. Navy sonar testing.

Confused and injured sea creatures strand themselves

Green stressed that underwater acoustic impacts, up to 215 decibels at the source, are not limited to just the hearing of marine creatures, but may affect the entire body. The Navy has data on impacts of sonic impacts on human divers, yet continues to seek exemptions on impacts to marine mammals. ne such exemption from provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) was granted for twelve tests over two years in Hawaiian waters, ending in January 2009. In May 2007, Green’s Ocean Mammal Institute and three other

O

groups filed a lawsuit, asking that the Navy abide by the protections afforded by the MMPA. During the extensive hearings, two former Navy admirals testified that passive listening devices are very effective for submarine detection. The Navy contends it needs to test and deploy Low and Mid-Range Active Sonar to track quiet-running subs. U.S. District Judge David Ezra returned a ruling in February of this year that Green described as “extremely balanced.” She believes Ezra went to great length in his 84 see SOUND, page 11

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, June 18 The battle over Molokai’s utilities continues to rage and now the consumers once served by Molokai Properties LLC are about to feel the sting. The state Public Utilities Commission proposed yesterday to increase water and sewer rates up to 122 percent in an effort to keep the flailing utilities system afloat while county and state officials play hot potato with the responsibility of providing water and sewer services to over 1,000 West Molokai residents. According to The Maui News, the rate increases would generate nearly $500,000 in extra revenue for the company who still insists it will shut down operations by August. Commission chairman Carlito Caliboso is quoted as saying, “Unfortunately, the commission had no choice but to propose a temporary increase.” Many residents might be wondering how it came to this. I guess that’s what happens when you rely on private corporations to provide public services. Now the county is left with a big mess and residents are stuck paying huge increases.

THURSDAY, June 19 That pesky Lance Collins is at it again, always picking on big developers like Honua’ula Properties, LLC, and their ever-so-popular Wailea 670 project. This time, Collins is representing a group of South Maui residents in a case claiming the Maui County Council violated so-called “Sunshine Laws” leading up to the zoning changes that would ultimately allow the project to go through. Collins and his band of Merry Men are calling a foul on the Council,

BY JARED LIBBY JARED@MAUITIME.COM

claiming they conducted hearings and made deals without proper public involvement. Second Circuit Court Judge Joseph Cardoza put the brakes on the $800 million project until the mess can be sorted out, giving each side 4 months to prepare for the new hearings. In other courtroom drama, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Oki Mollway dismissed a case filed by AlohaCare, a nonprofit health plan based in Honolulu. The dispute was over $1.5 billion in federal Medicaid contracts awarded to two out-ofstate providers Wellcare Health Plans Inc. from Florida and United Health Group out of Minnesota. AlohaCare representatives claim the winning bidders don’t have the proper base in Hawai’i to provide for local Medicare recipients. Lillian Koller, Department of Human Services director claims AlohaCare’s suit is just sour grapes. Koller refers to them as “a disappointed bidder” in an article in The Maui News and claims their suit only serves to “disparage the winning bidders, frighten our Medicaid clients and confuse physicians who care for them.” Regardless of what either side says in the press, it is a little scary sending that much federal money (we are talking $1.5 BILLION here) to mainland entities. But when it comes to our Kupuna, I guess what matters most is quality of care, Let’s hope the DHS is doing right by them.

help improve harbors statewide. According to an article in The Maui News, Lingle was “confident” the project could be completed in six years. As former Mayor of Maui County herself, you’d think she’d know better. I guess re-vamping the harbor must be easier than building a 12-mile stretch of highway. Much to the chagrin of Hawaii Superferry CEO, Thomas Fargo, the bill does not include money to build a protected dock for his much-maligned vessel. Currently using a docking barge that has a propensity for dislodging itself in a heavy winter swell, the Superferry was forced to cancel services for a number of weeks last year and may have to do the same this winter. Also included in the bill is $20 million to improve the decrepit commercial dock at Hana Bay. According to Sen. Kalani English who represents Hana in the 6th district, the much needed upgrade will help create a safety net in the event of road closures. Still with only one road in and out, Hana would indeed be stuck should a bridge or two give out. In other completely unrelated, irrelevant and un-newsworthy news, this reporter turned 30 today. Wow, it even looks old in print.

SUNDAY, June 22 A sad day statewide today with the untimely death of Kauai Mayor Bryan

Baptise. Affectionately referred to as “Mayor Aloha” Baptise left behind a legacy of public service and dedication to keeping his island rural, the way most of his constituents wanted it to stay. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. On another sad note, comedian George Carlin also passed away today at the age of 71. A master of the English language as well as philosophy and, of course, humor, Carlin made his stand-up as heady and thought provoking as it was laugh-out-loud hilarious. He could be raunchy and lewd but in a way that made you think. Relentlessly hard on politicians, stupidity and human beings in general Carlin never lost sight of the fact that it was all a big joke. He was a true master that will be missed.

FRIDAY, June 20 Well the Republicrats in Congress are yet again trying to flush our civil liberties down the proverbial crapper this week by striking a bi-partisan deal granting broad wiretapping privileges to the executive branch. The new policies would give intelligence agencies free reign to listen in on calls of American targets for up to a week with no warrant of any kind. A New York Times article today also reports that telecommunications companies who participated in President Bush’s illegal, warrant-less wiretapping following 9-11 will be granted immunity under the new law. The proposal should be voted on by next week in both houses of Congress and if it passes it can only be seen as a major victory for the Whitehouse. Let’s just hope this is one of the last. November can’t get here soon enough. A blurb in The Maui News today reported nearly $400,000 in federal grants would be offered to Molokai residents laid off by Molokai Ranch. The report stated that of the 117 people out of work, 56 of them were likely to receive assistance. If they live on the Westside, they’ll need all the help they can get as they stare down massive utility rate hikes.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD FUNNY, BUT NOT Faced with its Alzheimer’s residents’ tendency to wander away, the Benrath Senior Centre in Dusseldorf, Germany, came up with a novel approach: a fake bus stop (an exact replica of a real one) out front. Straying residents might be attracted to the familiar colors and design of the kiosk (because long-term memory is typically still robust) and wait there for a bus instead of trying to “go home” on foot. But short-term, the resident is typically unaware of how long he has been waiting and will remain until a Centre employee sees him and can guide him back into the home (which often is easy because the resident has by then forgotten why he is sitting there, according to a June dispatch from Berlin in London’s Daily Telegraph).

“You can see the steam coming out of their mouths.”

WEIRD SCIENCE Technically, Macie McCartney was born on May 3 of this year in Laredo, Texas, but that appearance outside the womb was actually her second. When a large tumor showed up on Macie six months into her mother’s pregnancy, surgeons actually pulled the fetus almost completely out of the uterus so they could excise the growth and then re-inserted the fetus. Following that rare procedure, the birth was normal, according to Dr. Darrell Cass, who explained it in June to viewers of NBC’s “Today” show.

ISN’T IT IRONIC? Evolution scientists at Switzerland’s University of Lausanne reported in June that over the course of 30 to 40 generations, ordinary flies tend to live longer if they’re stupid. The researchers guessed that heightened neural activity overtaxed their systems. In other news, cardiologists at Hartford (Conn.) Hospital, writing in the June Annals of Emergency Medicine, described a patient suffering from irregular heartbeat whose rhythm was restored to normal following a Tasering by police.

DUMB PEOPLE PANDAS GONE WILD

Nothing to Wear?

BY CHUCK SHEPHERD CHUCK@MAUITIME.COM

BBC filmmakers announced in June that they had captured, for perhaps the first time ever, an episode of pandas mating in the wild, for the “Wild China” TV series. A male is shown fighting off other males to coax a female down from a tree. What follows that, said producer Glenn Maxwell, are “loud calls which will make viewers think instantly of the Wookie character from the ‘Star Wars’ movies. I liken it to Chewbaccas in a pub brawl.” Eventually, the female descends, and the pair get to work, “breathing hard and panting,” said Maxwell.

Sharon Platt allegedly stole about $5,000 from her employer, Murphy Motors of Williston, N.D., recently and left town. She was apprehended in Pittsburgh in May after she applied for a job and listed Murphy Motors as a reference, and her old employer alerted Pittsburgh police. In other news,Charles Ray Fuller, 21, was arrested in Fort Worth, Texas, in April after he took a blank check belonging to his girlfriend and wrote it out to himself for $360,000,000,000.00, which he presented to Chase Bank. He remained in character after his arrest, assuring police that the check was legitimate, offered by the girlfriend’s mother to help him start a record label.

ROBREPORT SOUND: continued from page 8 page ruling to weigh the need for national defense training against that of endangered species protection. According to Green, the ruling stipulated that Navy Active Sonar testing violates both National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Coastal Zone Management (CZM) provisions, and that protective mitigation measures must be employed. According to Green, because of Judge Ezra’s ruling, the Navy is required to do aerial survey monitoring during military exercises to locate whales, and to reduce or completely halt sonar tests when whales are within a certain range of Navy vessels. Underwater acoustic monitoring must also be conducted with listening devices, to detect marine mammals that may not be visible on or near the surface. The U.S. Navy is appealing the ruling to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California. But Green said that court is “the most liberal appeals court in the country,” and doubted that Ezra’s findings would be over-ruled. eanwhile, the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercises are about to commence, running throughout the month of July. A multi-national training exercise operating bi-annually since 1971, countries participating with the U.S. Navy this year are Australia, Canada, Chile, Great Britain, Japan, Netherlands, Peru, South Korea, and Singapore. Sea faring military of various countries used the island of Kaho`olawe for target practice until 1982, when Hawaiian activists with the Protect Kaho`olawe `Ohana secretly paddled to the island during the RIMPAC exercises. That same year, Hawaii House and Senate resolutions called for cessation of the bombing exercises. Finally, in May, 1994, Kaho`olawe was returned to state ownership by

the federal government. In 2006, a lawsuit filed by the National Resources Defense Council forced the Navy to obtain permits to deploy sonar testing during its RIMPAC exercises. But that won’t be the case this year, unless they are again taken to court. Enter the state Office of Planning. According to Green, in a letter sent a month ago to the Navy’s Pacific Fleet Environmental Office in Pearl Harbor, State Planning Director Abbey Seth Mayer called for active sonar of no more than 145 decibels in Hawaiian waters, which extend three miles from the shorelines. Green said that in the letter, Mayer (referring to data in the Navy’s own Environmental Impact Statement) stated that anything greater could be expected to be harmful to marine mammals. CZM law puts the state waters in Hawaii’s jurisdiction, while beyond that is subject to federal guidelines. Should the Navy comply with the State directives, said Green, it could mean the sonar deployment only takes place from vessels or helicopters from 20-25 miles offshore. reen’s persistent efforts over the past decade seem to be bringing awareness to the issues of unregulated ocean noise. She has assisted the Hawaii Ocean Noise Coalition (HONC) with petition drives and sign-waving events. HONC is one of more than 140 non-governmental organizations worldwide that are calling for the United Nations to impose international regulation of ocean noise. The Drowning in Sound pamphlet–which has tracked efforts since 2004 by international governmental agencies–is addressing the issue. Ranging from the European Parliament to the World Conservation Union, from the International Maritime Organization to the European Union, progressive steps are being taken to recognize and address the harmful impacts of ocean noise. Yet, President George W. Bush is making a last-ditch effort to open new offshore areas to drilling for oil and natural gas. If approved, these regions in the Gulf of

reen said the Navy is not required to notify the public when they test, nor do they need to reveal test locations after the fact. “It’s all classified,” she said. The Navy just released a Final EIS for the Pacific Range Complex, studying potential impacts of military training in an enormous area of 2,235,000 square nautical miles, extending all the way to the Northwest Hawaiian Islands (Papahanaumokuakea National Monument.) Green said the FEIS covers RIMPAC, live munitions training, land and air, “forever, and hardly anyone knows about it.” “Where is the protection for the Humpback Whale Sanctuary and the Monument?” she asked.

oshua Alo has had a guitar strapped to his back for a very long time. J It all began with disobedient boy and a forbidden guitar, tucked quietly in a closet in his father’s Aiea home in central Oahu. Alo couldn’t resist the urge to pluck the strings when his father was away from the house. But his defiant behavior was rewarded one day when he was caught, red-handed, strumming one of his father’s favorite songs. Recognizing his son’s talent and ambition, and perhaps the futility of trying to keep the guitar out of his hands, Alo’s father relented and gave him the six string. He’s been virtually inseparable from the guitar ever since. In 1999 Alo enlist-

ed in the United States Air Force and left Oahu in search of worldly opportunities. He took a position as a mail transportation manager, a job that kept him out of battle but repeatedly put him in war zones and third world countries around Southeast Asia. Alo was dedicated to his military position. When his time was up he re-enlisted, and then extended his deployment for a year. All along Alo carried his acoustic instrument and the reggae beat that flows through him across 26 countries. Always traveling with a guitar, Alo had the opportunity to play to large and small crowds in Japan, Italy, Brussels, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and jammed regularly with other soldiers in Baghdad. His music is conscious roots reggae, a genre grown from the seed of Rastafarianism that inherently carries a message of social issues, oppression and spirituality. It’s also music that’s closely associated with resistance to war and the military. His songs tell the tale of his life, of his personal spiritual walk, and carry a message of faith and self-awareness. All 12 original, polished roots tracts were recorded while Alo was on active duty and stationed in Venice with Italian roots band Zion Love. Though his sound is by far more

Jamaican than Hawaiian and his message comes across with a lot of Rasta terminology, Alo says that he is a Christian.

he music on Alo’s debut album, Answer Your Calling, resonates with the solid T one-step reggae beats of an artist who emulated Bob Marley in his formative years. Alo’s personal flair comes in the form of unexpected guitar solos and heartfelt, personal lyrics. An unusual hint of tranquil ukulele strumming gives the album an island vibe and makes it unmistakable that Alo is a Hawai‘i boy through and through. When Alo told me his story over the phone last week I discovered that his voice is disarmingly melodic. His sweet timbered words flowed over the lines with a rhythmic tempo and his

Jessica Armstrong: Tell me about growing up in Hawaii? Joshua Alo: Oahu is like no other place in the world. Out of all 27 countries I’ve been to there’s no better place to grow up than Hawaii. The vibes of the people and the aina are majestic and inspiring. I learned to play the guitar by ear. It was just me and a lot of late nights listening to Marley tracts until I got every note right. Has it always been about reggae music for you? Well, as soon as I started strumming it was roots reggae. I listen to The Wailing Souls,The Black Roots from England, and, of course Bob. I like a lot of R & B and blues stuff too. Not the “meet you at the club, go home and take your clothes off” stuff, but like, the Stylistics, Marvin Gaye and Lionel Richie. They’re lyrical inspirations. I’m not a Jawaiian artist.

If creating roots reggae music is so important to you, why did you join the military? Six months of working for minimum wage was the catalyst of me joining the Air Force, but the bottom line is I wanted to serve and I wanted to support my country.

What was your job in the Air Force? I was a non-commissioned officer in charge of mail transmission.

You were a mailman? Not like a mailman that walks up and down the street. I was in full combat dress the whole time. My job was to get mail to the service members no matter where they were. My last station was in the Kingdom of Bahrain. I was in and out of Iraq, Kuwait, Saudia Arabia and Southeast Asia all the time. I’ve seen so many soldiers open letters, and do it slowly because of the scent of a perfume. It means everything to them.

Do you think there’s a conflict between writing music about peace and fighting in a war? The stigma is that appearance is everything. I did it to serve. I really want to get across to people that we’re here to serve the nation. When I’m in

uniform people look at me like I’m George Bush himself or something. There’s a stigma attached to me because I wore a uniform. My weapon is my guitar, and my message is that it’s not the soldiers who make the decisions but the leaders, and even the leaders have a master. The Armed Forces are a great peace time organization, too.

So you’ve felt some tension then? Yeah, I wrote a song about it for my next album, called “Hold On.” It’s a rebuttal to the criticism I receive from being in the military and doing conscious roots reggae. People of understanding know that what I say is true.

Tell me about making the album? I recorded it in Venice, Italy. It was hard because I was sick and working 13 hour days, but great because there are reggae people out there, too. The people there have so much aloha, in the Italian way. Where I recorded my music no one spoke English, but when it comes to music you don’t have to communicate with language. Music is its own language.

song “Answer Your Calling.” My greatest fear is not cultivating the blessings that I was given and choosing myself over others. I don’t think I’m some great guitarist, but this is my calling and I use what I can to help other people.

Speaking of spiritual callings, you aren’t a Rastafarian. Does that make you less credible as a roots reggae artist? All I’ll say is that I’m a Christian reggae artist. It’s a sensitive issue, all the guys from the band I’ll play with are Rastas. Reggae music is a back-to-Africa music. I can only speak for myself, but people of understanding know we all come to it eventually.

Have you always been this spiritual? No. Every tree grows branches and then leaves, and then, hopefully, bears fruit. MTW

Where did you get the inspiration for the songs on your album? These are my experiences. They come from my spiritual walk at that time. It’s a visionary record of love and spiritual warfare. I let life write my songs. Some songs took me three years to finish, but the most inspiring songs I wrote in 10 minutes and I don’t even remember writing them. Music is the realm to the spirit and your life is a record.

What about the love songs? My wife to me is an angel. The love songs that I write are so easy because when I sing about her I just sing the truth. It’s not easy being married to a service member. She has stuck through it, held it down and I love her. That’s why I wrote “Hold On.” Behind every service member is a family that’s under a lot of pressure.

Where did the album’s title come from? The river that’s pictured on the cover is a very special place to me. It’s in the mountains in Italy where I would go to meditate. One day my friend was with me and she asked me what my greatest fear is. That’s not the kind of question you get every day.The next day I came up with the

infectious laugh came easily. He spoke with an unidentifiable accent that stems from his local upbringing and branches with the flavor of time spent speaking and listening to foreign languages around the world. He’s on his way to Maui for his debut performance after nine years of military service. I wanted to know how he balances his musical message of unity and love with his choice to become a soldier for a country that enforces peace with guns.

Sheik’s is the Bomb We stop by the restaurant that time forgot Even on Maui, technology and urban sprawl have permeated almost every facet of our lives. However, this ultra-caffeinated attitude seems to have passed Sheik’s by.

If you want further proof that Sheik’s is the restaurant time forgot, you’ll be quickly reminded when you realize you have to pay in cash— Sheik’s doesn’t accept credit or even check. Sheik’s is everything a diner should be. There are loyal customers who have been patronizing the establishment for years; these are the regulars who can tell you about a time on Maui when all the stores closed promptly at 5:00pm. This is the kind of restaurant where history hangs heavy in the air. History, by the way, smells faintly of old cigarettes and fresh coffee. Just because Sheik’s has an old-time feel, doesn’t mean it skips out on flavor. The hot roast pork sandwich is a welcomed respite from the low-carb, low-fat, low-taste diet everyone is so accustomed to. The roast pork is placed between two slices of white bread, and then drenched in gravy. Along with the sandwich, this dish is served with

A popular trend in cuisine is to take a classic dish and its ingredients, and then to modify them beyond recognition. If you don’t believe me, just watch 30 minutes of the Food Network. I’ll admit that I’m addicted to the chicken taco plate (hold the cheese, please) from Fernando’s. I can’t believe that I hadn’t eaten at Amigo’s until early this past week. It’s good! What I found interesting though, is that while the food that I had wasn’t what I would consider “spicy,” their horchata was. Yes folks, if you want a refreshing glass of horchata that’s heavy on the spice and low on the sweet, Amigo’s is the place for you. I’ll be back for another glass for sure. MAUI TACOS Maui Tacos is the belle of the ball. I don’t know a single person that hasn’t eaten at one of their numerous locations. I would label their horchata “refreshing” or as Rap Reiplinger as Auntie Marialani would say, “Not too sweet, not too rancid but jes’ right!” Island wide. $

Elmo! Friday – Sunday (June 27-29) various times at Castle Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center [FAMILY] What a whole bunch of young adults don’t know is that Elmo is actually second generation Sesame Street. What I mean is that when I was at prime Sesame Street watching age, Elmo wasn’t around. Sure, he may have been a twinkle in some puppet maker’s eye, but he wasn’t really part of the crew yet. In my day, it was all about The Count, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Barkley and my very favorite, Grover. The cool thing is that I still love Sesame Street and all the original crew is still rockin’ so I don’t mind sitting through a bunch of Elmo. In fact, I’m looking forward to it. Tickets: $33, $20, $10. Friday, 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10:30 a.m, 2 p.m., 5 p.m.; Sunday 4:30 p.m. For more info mauiarts.org or 242-7469. [STARR BEGLEY]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Starr Begley

Beach Bummy Good Time Hot Hands Friday (June 27) 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oceanfront at the Maalaea Harbor Shops [MUSIC] One of my friends just turned 21. This means he’s finally free to do all the things he’s been doing since he was 15. Kidding! Sheesh… There’s no better way to celebrate his release from the ER than to enjoy the live soulful crooning of Maui’s own Jessica Rabbit and the ever versatile and ever popular Kanoa of Gomega. While attending these live musical performances, you can also catch the remnants of Beach Bum’s spectacular Happy Hour. Since drinking on an empty stomach isn’t something I’d recommend, go ahead and order Beach Bum’s delicious (and cheap) Pork Sliders. On your fifth Mai Tai (or whatever your preferred poison is), you’ll be glad you did. [YNEZ TONGSON]

THURSDAY

Friday (June 27) 7:30 p.m., McCoy Studio Theatre, MACC [MUSIC] From chemistry I’ve learned that some elements combine to create an explosive product. The periodic table of elements should be made to include Maui stars Willie K and Joe Cano, who are joined by Avi Ronen. These three masters come together to create an outstanding guitar trio known as Lima Wela. Each artist contributes their own unique talents to engineer a musical experience that combines classical Spanish-based sounds, the intrigue of Middle Eastern music and the rhythmic melodies of the Hawaiian Islands. Forget paying the high cost of travel (and even paying for your check-in luggage), with the artful manipulation of their guitar strings, Lima Wela will have you on a musical journey that spans from our home in Hawaii to the Mediterranean. Tickets: $36 For info call 242-7469 or visit w w w. m a u i a r t s . o r g [YT]

Killer Keys Saturday, (June 28) 6:30 p.m. at Seabury Hall Performing Arts Studio, Makawao [MUSIC] By “killer keys” I am in no way referring to the way selfdefense experts recommend that women walking through a dark parking lot should hold their keys and attempt to gouge an attacker’s eyes out. Nope, I am simply ripping off Calendar Editor Jessica Armstrong’s listing title for this wonderful and free event. While I’m at it, I’ll just go ahead and snag her content too. “An amazing piano concert by master of the ivory keys Adam Tendler, who’s prepared John Cage’s Sonatas and Interludes for the piano, presented by Ebb and Flow Arts.” Thanks Jess! P.S. Adam Tendler is pretty hot! Just thought you should know. Tickets: Free. For more info call 876-1854.

DAY

Don’t Mess with Texas (BBQ) Sunday (June 29) 2-5 p.m., Lahaina Store Grille and Oyster Bar Rooftop. [PARTY] I’m going to have to ask my friend Val from Houston what exactly a Texas style barbeque is. I assume it involves a lot of red meat, big hats, jacked-up pickup trucks and one of those gargantuan grills that can cook 30 steaks at a time. But it’s cool that this Front Street restaurant is throwing these rooftop parties because, lets face it, a lot of people on the West side live in apartment complexes that don’t allow grills. Plus they’ve got an ocean view that I’d have to sell my soul to afford, a Nintendo Wii for the kids (and the kidsat-heart) and live music. A trained professional will be manning the fire so I won’t be in any danger of singing my eyebrows off, which is another big bonus. Stuffed jalapenos, juicy brisket and all the yummy fixings are included, so my biggest responsibility will be making sure I’ve got a cold beverage in my hand. $15.95 for adults, $10.95 for kids 12 and under. FILMCRITIQUE

BY BARRY WURST II BARRY@MAUITIME.COM

The Matrix Regurgitated Been there, done that It’s been nine long years since the release of The Matrix, but did the makers of Wanted think we completely forgot? See if this sounds familiar: a lonely, white caller worker is recruited by a mysterious femme fatale to join a secret society (that is ruled by an older man with a deep, foreboding voice) and learns the real truth about the world we live in. Instead of Keanu Reeves, we get staron-the-rise James McAvoy. Rather than Carrie-Ann Moss, we get Angelina Jolie (ever heard of her?) Substitute Laurence Fishburne for Morgan Freeman and, instead of a secret club bent on overcoming world domination from a pack of machines, we get a small community of assassins living in a fraternity called…The Fraternity. With its emphasis on flamboyant special effects, and ample gun play, Wanted plays like The Matrix without the sci-fi angle (I half expected the end credits to read: Based on a Better Movie by The Wachowski Brothers).

McAvoy has a following and is said to make the ladies swoon (thanks, but I’ll take island boy Keanu Reeves any day.) Jolie is a great actress, but here she has a role less interesting than the onedimensional babe she played in Gone in 60 Seconds and Tomb Raider. Freeman’s appearance, on the other hand, is puzzling. His role as an intimidating, foul-mouthed (yes, the “March of the Penguins” narrator drops a few Fbombs!) henchman is a perfect fit for Samuel L. Jackson but feels wrong for a magnificent actor who is arguably best known for playing God twice in the last five years.

Thursday June 26th

Rated R/110 min.

The movie itself is blood-soaked, long, highly profane, incredibly silly, crude and not terribly original (in short, it’s this summer’s Swordfish.) On the other hand, a few of the action sequences will get hearts racing. One in particular involves a train, one of the most amazing things I’ve seen all year. The ending

Friday June 27th

suggests a sequel-ready franchise; unlike The Matrix, however, the violence is sometimes hard to take, the special effects are over-the-top and obvious, and, unlike the story of Neo, Wanted isn’t about anything beyond how stylish movie violence can look. Whoa. MTW

Palahniuk’s Pretty Mind Haunted [BOOK] Since Choke will be hitting theatres soon, people will probably want to familiarize themselves with some of Chuck Palahniuk’s novels. In Haunted, the overall story is about 17 people who decide to participate in a writer’s retreat. From there, it’s a contest for who can exploit human suffering the most, even if it means destroying all their essential resources and each other. Haunted is composed of 23 short stories that highlight Palahniuk’s ability to captivate the audience in the same way car accidents do. That is, you want to look away, but you can’t.

[BOOK] Before you start thinking Rant is about some angst-ridden teenager’s poorly written blog, let me clarify: in this context, “rant” is the sound of a boy’s neighbors being violently ill, after a prank involving animal organs. Of course, this leads to that lovely sound being the boy’s nickname. This same boy later finds that being bitten by highly poisonous spiders have, ahem, rather interesting side effects. He uses this to his advantage to receive an early diploma from high school and a rather sizeable check. From there, things just get even more twisted. Think of Rant as being an informal introduction to biological warfare of the worst kind.

Snuff [BOOK] Snuff is baby-mama-drama of a different sort. Snuff is the tale of one porn queen, Cassie Wright, going for a record of 600 sex acts caught on film. Except, the real juicy stuff isn’t so much what’s caught on screen, but what the guys waiting around for their turn are involved in. Rumor is that in the middle of her career, Cassie left the business to have a child. Even more titillating is the rumor that the child is present for the momentous occasion, ready to claim its birthright. It’s these sorts of issues that would make even Freud squirm. After reading this novel, I was convinced that no woman could possibly do 600 men in one sitting. Leave it up to good ole’ American ingenuity to prove me wrong. While Palahniuk’s novels have always seemed to stretch the truth a little, that’s nothing compared to Lisa Sparxxx’s record in 2004 of 919 men in one session.

Their new release, The Vegas Years has the same tight, alternative sound that I fell in love with when I heard “Father of Mine” and “I Will Buy You a New Life,” though, and they’ll definitely play some of the originals and dynamic covers that I know and love when I think of Everclear. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) If you’ve been disciplined about your new habits, you should have started seeing some modest results by now. If you haven’t, it’s because you haven’t been disciplined enough. Your first inclination at this point may be to simply throw in the towel and give up entirely, but I hope you can resist that defeatist urge. Look at my first sentence again; discipline would have yielded results by now. If you haven’t manifested that kind of perseverance and determination yet, take the opportunity to do so now, or in a month you’ll be in exactly the same place—only you’ll feel even worse about it.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re likely to finally get a little much-needed support for one of your least popular plans, but it’s also likely to simply be too little, too late. Use this moment to notice that it might be time to just let this particular dream go—it’s not going to happen, at least not the way you’ve envisioned it. It’s time to release and rethink your ideas about it. Only when you free up this valuable time and energy will you have any chance of making anything interesting happen. It won’t be what you wanted; it might not even be nearly as good. But it’ll be something—which is a lot more than you have right now.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You don’t have room in your life or schedule to add a whole new thing. There’s no solid block of time where you could put it. However, incorporating a new element into your life doesn’t have to be so dramatic. You could fit it into the cracks in your routine. For instance, although I also try to work out for an hour or two nearly every day, I fit in little five-minute workouts throughout my day. This isn’t necessarily ideal, but it’s what I can manage. By refusing to settle for anything less than the perfect arrangement, you’ll probably end up accomplishing exactly nothing. A compromise has to be better than that, doesn’t it?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) There you are, steadily dog-paddling your way across the lake. Your lips are blue and your muscles feel like damp clay, but you won’t give up. I admire your determination, but I do wonder if your stubbornness goes a bit too far. You said no to those people who rowed by in their little boat and offered to give you a lift, and turned up your nose at the abandoned inflatable mattress you bumped into. I understand you want to do this for yourself, but isn’t it possible you’re taking self-reliance too far? After all, the whole point is to get there. While it does matter how you do it, does it matter enough to risk not getting there at all?

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I’m incredibly disappointed when parents give their kids boring names simply to keep them from being made fun of in elementary school. They let the potential cruelty of other children determine their kid’s name for his whole life, saddling him with something utterly ordinary and forgettable just to avoid having some idiot kids tease him for it. The problem is, if kids want to make fun of him, they’ll find a reason no matter what, so they might as well give him the vivid, unique name he deserves. Similarly, the precautions you’re taking won’t prevent the dilemma you’re trying to avoid; they’ll just block one avenue to it. Don’t bother with them.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Keep moving towards your goal, but try to be open-minded. There’s no need to explicitly change your mind about where you think you’re headed; just don’t pitch a fit if you never actually get there. Where you end up instead could be as fascinating as it is surprising, and might ultimately suit you better than your original destination. Getting derailed or otherwise thrown off course might turn out, in retrospect, to be the best thing that ever happened to you, so don’t freak out if it happens, and especially don’t blow up at whoever you think is at fault. That person could be your guardian angel, trying to help you get to where you really need to go. You’ll want them to still love you when you figure out just how much you love them.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) There’s a fine line between persistence and obstinacy. You already know that only losers give up at the first sign of trouble. However, those who throw themselves repeatedly at a wall that will never come down are even bigger losers. Successful Caps are those that can figure out whether something is truly a lost cause, or simply requires godly determination. Can you see the line between the two, even though it’s faint and ever-shifting? This week, make sure you’re clear about where exactly it is, and which side of it you’re on.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) What would you do if you woke up one day and discovered you could no longer read, walk, or speak? How would you react if abilities you take for granted every day were snatched away overnight? I’ll tell you: you’d freak out, you’d cry, and then you’d adapt. You’d figure shit out and move on. If you could get used to something like that (and you could, I promise), you shouldn’t have so much trouble adjusting to your recent losses, which are much less dramatic. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and move on; remember, it could be a lot worse.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) All Pisces are masochists to some extent. Consciously or not, you all invite some misery into your lives. Remember this the next time you suffer. This isn’t to say that you asked for it, exactly, but you also didn’t do what you might have to prevent it. This isn’t a critique; I think it’s a virtue to remain vulnerable and open, even if it means you may pay the price in pain and suffering. The alternative is to do your best to remain completely safe, and therefore closed-off and untrusting. That would go against your very nature and cut you off from what makes you special. Safety and security are illusory, and not all they’re cracked up to be. It may sound odd, but—-keep hurting, and be thankful that you can.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Ah, the torture of waiting. Patience is not one of your virtues, and you will usually do anything you can to keep from waiting to see how something turns out. Some things can’t be rushed, however, and this is one of them. Jumping ahead here would be like skipping to the last page of a book before you’re done with Chapter Two. Not only would it make no sense, but it would rob it of any emotional significance it might have had otherwise. Bide your time, Aries. See how this plays out, in its own time. You might as well be cool with that; it’s your only real option.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I try not to kill bugs. I assume that on some level they value their lives as much as I value mine, and killing them just because they’re little and I can is cruel and unnecessary. Sometimes I destroy them by accident, and I don’t torture myself with guilt over it, but it feels good to consciously eschew needless nastiness. You should do the same. I’m not so sure you’ve made a great effort in recent times to simply be kind to other living beings. Everyone’s got a mean streak that gets the best of them sometimes. This week, do your best to develop a habit of reining yours in.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) So things didn’t work out the way you’d planned, and, unfortunately, they didn’t turn into happy accidents that were actually better than what you had in mind. Shit. Unfortunately, that’s just how things go sometimes, and crying about the injustice of it all is more or less a waste of your time. In fact, the sooner you can cut your losses and move on, the better. Hanging out here will just compound your suffering, and ultimately make things worse. You can’t change what happened. Stop torturing yourself and just accept it. There are greener pastures ahead. Go find them.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

RESTLESSNATIVE

BY STARR BEGLEY STARR@MAUITIME.COM

That’s My Girl How do you bond with your kids? Some mothers take their daughters to the Macy’s MAC counter. Others have them save up for an Oahu trip to Sephora or a fancy new pair of patent leather, glittery, totally-impractical-for-the-playground pair of slippers. I’ll be honest and say that these types of “Mommy and Me” outings and purchases irk the hell out me–especially when they involve little girls that shouldn’t need makeup or kitten heels. Then again, I’m questioning my decision to introduce my seven year old, gorgeous tomboy to the world of local MMA. That’s right folks: I took my little girl to HXC: Undisputed, at the Lahaina Civic Center, this past weekend and she loved it. I’ve heard the argument that MMA is a violent sport and that violence isn’t okay for kids. Part of me wants to argue that “violence,” which Wikipedia defines as the “exertion of force so as to injure or abuse,” is a natural part of the world around us. Life is violent; but I know that those that oppose it don’t want to hear that crap. On Saturday, before the fights, I tried to explain the situation to my daughter. I told her about the referees and how it’s their job to control the fight and stop it if one of the fighters can’t continue. I pointed out Dr. Kamaka and told her that he was ringside to help anyone who got hurt. I told her that the men that were about to enter the ring loved to fight and worked very hard to become good at it. “Why do people want to hurt each other?” she asked. Good question, I thought. It’s my opinion that the violent nature of MMA is misunderstood. It’s not just about beating the hell out of someone. It’s about dominance and submission. Survival of the fittest. MMA is so addicting because it satisfies a very animalistic urge in people. Under the lip-liner and fancy clothes, we’re basically just mammals that throughout the years have fought and killed for food, shelter and power. Most people like the fact that in modern society we don’t have to do that stuff anymore (now we enter the rat race and take out loans for fancy cars,) but at the same time, something’s missing. That something? Battle. As a kid, I went to a ton of boxing, kickboxing and wrestling events with my dad. I liked it from the moment that I was exposed to it; but over the weekend I began to wonder if as a little girl I just wanted to be like my daddy and therefore clung to things that interested him. Of course, this made me wonder if my daughter was just trying to be close to me by participating in something that moves and excites me. It’s a strange thing, the parent and child relationship. It turned out that the fights were pretty clean on Saturday. There wasn’t a ton of blood (I’m into the gore, but wasn’t so sure about my daughter) and there was minimal shit talking between the fighters. No one appeared to be seriously injured and she enjoyed herself. I must say that it was pretty awesome watching her perch on her seat, watching the bouts with excited eyes. I felt pride when she’d jump up for a better view. We shared a big hug after the event and she said, “Mom we have GOT to go to more of these things!” But I’m not sure if she’s actually stoked on the sport, or just happy to be doing something with mom. Am I no better than those mothers I bash at the MAC counter? Do I just want my daughter to be a mini-me? I have no doubt that going to the fights on Saturday satisfied something primal within my daughter. But was it blood lust or simply gaining her mother’s approval? Starr Begley is really super-duper excited that Kendall Grove put a whooping on Evan Tanner and his beard. MTW
