LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR SMARTY PANTS The following letter is in response to Jared Libby’s June 26 Coconut Wireless column: Aloha. Just so you know for your next article. Castle and Cooke is owned by billionaire developer David H. Murdock who also owns Dole Foods. –Jonathon via MauiTime.com THE EDITOR RESPONDS: You’re absolutely right! Thanks for the correction. Jared Libby, who turned 30 last week, admits to being a little senile but other than that highly intelligent and informative.
Why not a cock fight next time? Or a XXX show? So long as it’s in a forum, it’s regulated, and the people love what they do. It’s only a shame that these last two are not legal for your daughter. I have no idea why. –Good job! via www.MauiTime.com THE EDITOR RESPONDS: I do agree that there are other activities out there for families with young children that may be a lot more beneficial than watching live mixed martial arts. But to compare a sport filled with dedicated and trained athletes to an illegal, underground activity and porn? That’s just offensive.
OUCH, MY EARS! BAD MOM? MAYBE. HOLOHOLO GIRL? DEFINITELY NOT!

The following letters are in response to Starr Begley’s June 26 Restless Native “That’s My Girl”
I watched the Akaku show with Dr. Marsha Green, referred to near the end of this article. Wow, thanks for the great report on what is at stake in our oceans, and how the military totally wants to sidestep any responsibility for following the law. The RIMPAC exercises are outdated and unnecessary, and should not be held in proximity to our islands. Thanks, Rob & Marsha, for telling the truth. –Bert W. via www.mauitime.com
After reading Holoholo Girl about Holoholo Girl bonding with her daughter at an MMA fight, I am reminded of an old National Lampoon album I had as a kid, “That’s not funny, that’s sick!” –Uncle, Makawao

WHAT AN HONOR
Photo: Dr. Drew Honolulu
Dowling Co.’s Everett Dowling was awarded the T.S. Shin Award at this week’s Maui Chamber of Commerce meeting that featured Lt. Governor Duke Aiona as head speaker. Proving that businessmen will never miss a chance to pat each other on the back, and that Dowling can get positive press in The Maui News whenever he shows up somewhere, for anything. The article this Saturday read like Dowling’s yearbook. Honored many times in the past by the Chamber, Dowling has been their darling since coming to Maui in 1986 and beginning one of the largest development companies on island. Honored as “entrepreneur of the year,” “fundraising professional of the year” and “all-around great guy” of the year–ok I made that one up—not to mention donating $3 million to local organizations (a pittance compared to what his developments rake in,) it’s no secret Dowling will remain the golden boy in the Maui business community.

You were jumping around drunk in crashing waves with a glass beer bottle in your hand. I politely asked you to leave the glass on the beach so we wouldn't get any broken glass in the ocean. You blew me off. I watched a few minutes later when a wave smacked you and you came up without the beer bottle. So, what did you do? You got another Corona and brought the glass bottle back into the waves. In less than a minute you were smacked by a wave and dropped the 2nd bottle. My friend tried to talk to you and you denied it and wanted to fight. You spoke pidgen which makes me assume you are local. Where's your respect for the aina and for the rest of us who don't like getting broken glass in our feet when playing in the water?

Buy Drink?
4th of July
In Wailuku there are 12 or 13 class 5 category D’s (only one in Kahului.) I’m talking about hostess bars. You know, girls host guests, people buy drinks, and tips are given. Everyone has a good time, kind of like Vegas in Maui.
Imagine the scenario with me: The setting? Saigon Palace. The date and time? July 22, 2007 at 12:49 am. The mood was right and Janet Tuyyet Huynh was working the floor. A relatively new girl, according to Saigon Palace owner, she’d been given the hands on training by some of the more senior girls. This, of course, includes knowing how to approach the customer, what to say, what to do, what’s allowed, what’s not. ‘Who knows? Maybe she even got some tips on how to deal with dumb ass guys who are too drunk to treat a lady properly. Anyhow, little did Tuyyet Huynh know that on this particular night, the sting was on. Instead of having to deal with some old crooner, she may have been happy when she saw a younger, more innocent gent making his way inside the establishment. But her fate was pretty much sealed when she asked him to buy a drink. He obliged, according to the record. How’s this for an instant mood killer? He’s 19 years old; he’s a minor decoy. He’s working for the Department of Liquor Control.

ROBREPORT
Nothing to Wear? ...We ...We Know Know
BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET
All in the ‘Ohana Examining the contributions of a unique Political Action Committee ope springs eternal every two years on Maui that a majority of visionary, dedicated candidates may be elected to County Council, finally achieving the pendulum swing back from the protracted tenure of a “more is better,” and “plantation politics as usual” majority mindset. Such was the optimism that percolated through a gathering of `Ohana Coalition Maui enthusiasts last Saturday afternoon at a campaign kickoff event held at the Hawaii Nature Center in `Iao Valley. Nearly a hundred people convened on a sunny afternoon at the outdoor venue, tucked between the former `Iao Valley Lodge and the building that once housed the restaurant Pino’s, and later The Velvet Needle. The audience included members of conservation and environmental non-profits, vacation rental supporters, announced candidates, and prospective campaign donors. Live music set a comfortable groove then gave way to a series of speakers. Inside one of the buildings, a large spread of healthy food included taro, lychee, sunflower sprouts, bananas, haupia, and more. The event served as an early opening to the 2008 campaign season, which unofficially starts its engines with the Fourth of July Makawao Rodeo Parade. At that event, it is not unusual to see incumbents and challengers unfurl their campaign banners while parading on foot, in convertibles, or even on horseback.

he `Ohana Coalition is clearly a different sort of animal in the world of Political Action Committees (PAC’s,) which generally are established as a conduit for campaign contributions to support big business interests of major landowners, developers or unions. First formed in 2002, the `Ohana Coalition is continuing its efforts as a broad-based citizens group “coming together to level the political playing field,” as their website states. Among their stated goals are “Careful management of Maui’s water resources, protection and respect for historic cultural sites, and self-sustainability in agriculture and energy.” Formation as a PAC enables raising funds, placing ads and directly endorsing candidates that share similar values. Candidate endorsement takes place after a rigorous interview process, with group members asking detailed questions on critical issues. Steering

Committee member Mike McCormick, also one of the event organizers, noted that a significant amount of attendees signed up to help with this year’s extensive interview process. cCormick said the event aimed for “inclusiveness,” and the results of their outreach efforts were clearly visible. Audience members included representatives from Maui Unite, Maui Tomorrow, Save Makena, Save Honolua Coalition, Maui Coastal Land Trust, Maui Vacation Rental Association and many other non-profit organizations. Several of them were invited to speak of their key issues and goals. Sharing concerns about water was `Iao Valley resident John Duey, one of several individuals active with the Na Wai Eha efforts to restore traditional stream flows in four major valleys of the West Maui Mountains. “They used to call this the Wailuku River,” Duey told the crowd. “Then Wailuku Stream, then `Iao Stream. Now I call it `Iao Trickle.” He encouraged people to walk a short distance up the trail bordering the stream banks to the water diversion. There, the rushing stream virtually disappears into a metal grate that reaches from one bank to the other. Noting that Wailuku Water Company (formerly Wailuku Sugar and Wailuku Agribusiness) filed a request in May with the Public Utility Commission to become a water utility, Duey called for public, not private management of the resources.

Sustainability Club, Tamara Paltin of Save Honolua Coalition and Angie Hoffman of Save Makena. Hoffman has been active as a youth organizer on South Maui issues, including working with high school students who are just approaching voting age. Paltin acknowledged that while one may not have all the answers or solutions, that networking with others and getting directly involved is extremely valuable. Tom Crowley of the Maui Vacation Rental Association provided a brief overview of pending legislation at the Council Planning Committee, noting that the discussions and deliberations would resume at a July 1st meeting. He listed flaws in the proposed ordinance, including a provision for a 20 unit “mini-hotel” vacation rental in BusinessCountry Town zoned areas. That would have far greater impacts, he noted, than rentals spread out through a broader area. Crowley noted that the net effect of the new legislation would be to eliminate most existing visitor homes by disqualifying them for permits, and stressed that these operations are a vital component of Maui’s visitor industry. He said he favors a “three strikes, you’re out,” provision, to help ensure that transient vacation rentals do not adversely affect neighbors. outh Maui resident Daniel Kanahele asked to speak about the importance of cultural preservation and humbly began his comments by saying he felt inadequate to address the topic. Sharing his genealogical roots as hapa-Hawaiian who grew up in Kaneohe, he said he felt at home in `Iao

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, June 25 A revised proposal for a West Maui Hospital was submitted this week by California developer Brian Hoyle. According to an article in today’s Maui News Hoyle, along with the so-called West Maui Improvement Foundation filed an application last February but was asked by the State Health and Planning and Development Agency to provide more information. Clearly the SHPDA is doing what it can to help the application process, prompting Hoyle to say “We truly appreciate SPHDA’s willingness to provide guidance to assure that our application meets it requirements.” Strange, I always thought of an application process as something you have to complete on your own, and then the governing body sees if it’s up to snuff. But I guess when you own two banks in California and control stock in two companies (that would eventually run the new hospital) you get a little extra help along the way. That’s not to say the need for a new facility isn’t there, West Maui could use a decent hospital and the island in general could always use better medical care. But is a California bank-owner turned hospital developer our best option? He obviously knows how to grease the wheels of local government. The Hawaii Air National Guard’s 29th Brigade Combat Team is getting ready to be deployed to Kuwait for a nine month mission. An AP article featured in the Maui News told of soldiers laughing as they practiced escaping from an overturned Humvee. Most of the troops are veterans of the brigade’s last service in Iraq
just two years ago. After serving for 20 months, a year of which was in Iraq, the brigade will only be in the Middle East nine months. Best of luck to everyone, our hearts go with you. Come home soon.
THURSDAY, June 26 No fireworks on the 4th of July? Where’s everyone’s national spirit? Sighting poor sales, many retailers in the county simply won’t be selling fireworks, this according to an article in The Maui News. More alarming perhaps is the severe drought conditions that have fire officials worried. Parts of Molokai are in full-blown drought status while hundreds of acres around Maui could go up with the slightest spark. So maybe it’s a good thing there won’t be as many fireworks this 4th. Just hope all those smokers out there keep their butts under control. In other 4th of July news, Cops say they’ll be cracking down on drunks in Lahaina town during the fireworks display. Roadblocks too, so don’t be stupid. With the island’s only public display, there will most definitely be a few derelicts out and about, again, maybe it’s a good idea there won’t be as many fireworks.
FRIDAY, June 27 Interesting story in The Maui News this week about six owners of beachfront property in Spreckelsville who want to “re-nourish” their beaches by pumping sand from the deep ocean floor and depositing it in front of their houses. Consultant Robb Cole calls it “a privately funded science experiment.” A project that has “not really been studied in Maui, or even Hawaii,” according to an agent of The Maui Sea Grant Costal Program. Using large “Geotubes” that “extend into the water like large groins.” Huh? I thought this was Sreckelsville, not Little Beach. Huge water groins aside, what are they doing messing around with the beach? Is this an environmental project or a property value restoration project?

set to start in September. The long-forgotten public works project has been in the design process for, get this, eight years. Bids for the initial phase of the construction will be considered by September. Estimated at $30 million, the County has absolutely no idea when the park might be finished. Somewhere between “2015 and 2020” according to a Maui News article this morning. With a 1,000-seat gymnasium, two softball fields, two soccer fields, new tennis and basketball courts I see it taking decade, but even that is a stretch considering how long Mokulele took. I think the over-under is closer to 2025; it’ll be the park of the future.
MONDAY, June 30 So all this time we’ve been told the invasion if Iraq was never about the oil, funny how things change toward the end of a lame duck presidency. A New York Times article today revealed that despite what U.S. officials have said repeatedly in the past, American advisors did in fact help
the Iraqi Oil Ministry pick who they would award contracts to for developing some of the country’s largest oil fields. The article refers to “a group of American advisors and a small State Department team.” The article also claims “it’s unclear how much influence their work had on the ministry’s decisions.” But reading a list of those who were awarded contracts pretty much clears that up. Exxon Mobil, Shell and Chevron top the list of Western oil companies set to start suckling at the oily teat that is one of the planet’s largest oil reserves. Will this mean our men and women can come home now? Or lower prices at the pump? Somehow I doubt it. Instead it looks like more record profits for the ol’ boy’s club. November can’t come soon enough.
TUESDAY, July 1 “The United States has stayed out of the matter of awarding Iraqi oil contracts,” – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Fox News earlier this month. MTW
SATURDAY, June 28 A rather alarming Maui News article today titled “CEO: No threat to county’s hospitals”. When the CEO of the County’s largest hospital says “no threat” it usually means bad news. Wes Lo, CEO of Maui Memorial and administrator of the Hawaii Health Systems Corp, also said every hospital in the county was losing money. But while the corporation may recommend lay-offs in other parts of the state, Maui County is safe for now, Lo said. Set to roll on a $100 million expansion this year, Maui Memorial looks like it has legs. What this means for a possible West Maui hospital is anybody’s guess.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD DRUG ADDICTED PETS Animals in Trouble: (1) China’s Xinhua news agency reported in March that a farmer in Jilin province had been found with a tortoise that is addicted to nicotine. The farmer, a smoker himself, said he was surprised when the pet puffed on a cigarette he had playfully stuck in its mouth, and since then, he occasionally shares smokes with it. (2) Magistrates in Sunderland, England, accepted a guilty plea in June from Samantha Pearson and David Step for animal cruelty. The couple had relocated quarters last October but left behind a pet, Milly, to starve to death. Milly was a pet rat.
ROLE MODELS High school soccer coach Sanford Kaplan, 57, was arrested in Lincoln, Neb., in May and charged with having imprisoned several underage boys in sessions in his garage in which they were bound, gagged and suspended from the rafters. Track coach Lawrence “Poppy” Vincent, 74, of Bracken Christian School in Bulverde, Texas, was arrested in May and charged with indecent exposure to an undercover police officer; Vincent was wearing floral women’s panties and a bra. Football coach Steve Halpin, 52, was permitted to retire quietly in June from Mesquite High School near Dallas after officials discovered that he had pawned 270 items since January 2007, including school equipment (which, in each case, he had later retrieved from the pawnshop).
WASTE OF TIME Washington, D.C., police chief Cathy Lanier decided in May to rehire 17 cops who had been fired for misconduct. The cases against the officers were solid, she noted, except that their hearings before a police trial board had not been held within the required 55 days after the charges were filed. D.C. courts and arbitrators had previously reinstated officers where the 55day deadline was not met, and Lanier

felt she had no choice. (However, the following week, Lanier announced she was beginning the process of re-firing the 17 officers, this time because they would be unable to perform their jobs since they could not be credible witnesses in criminal cases because of their records.)
DON’T SIT NEXT TO “There’s really no way to explain people’s fetishes,” said University of Cincinnati campus police Capt. Karen Patterson, describing the arrest of Dwight Pannell, 43, for allegedly crawling under a library table, squirting liquid from a syringe on a female student’s shoe, and photographing it. Pannell told police he was just trying out his new camera. In February, police officer Michael Curtin, 36, was removed from the force in Munhall, Pa., and in April was charged with offering two underage girls $1,000 each to let him suck their toes.
FLATULANCE VACCINE Methane’s longstanding menace as a climate-altering greenhouse gas is closer than ever to being controlled, said New Zealand scientists in June after genome-mapping found the source of flatulence in ruminant animals, and the researchers said they thought they could vaccinate against it. While livestock accounts for only 2 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas, it causes over half of New Zealand’s. Unless the vaccination is successful, farmers will face a huge tax on methane by 2012 brought on by the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol.
BREAKING NEWS When a big storm came through Alma, Ark., on the evening of May 7, residents rushed out to secure themselves inside the brand-new community shelter the town had just built with great fanfare. However, as the winds raged, the 20 people who showed up had to sprawl on the ground because the shelter was locked, and the deputy with the key was busy on a call. (2) In January, Dr. Steve Paulk announced that he would commence offering breast augmentation procedures and would be working out of Moundview Memorial Hospital in Friendship, Wis. MTW

ROBREPORT OHANA: continued from page 8 Valley, with the steep, green cliffs rising from the stream bed to the sky reminiscent of the Oahu pali. Wearing a floppy safari hat, Kanahele described his recent hikes looking for archaeological and cultural sites, as an “Indiana Jones” type of endeavor. He articulated a great need to retain and rediscover links to Hawaii’s cultural past, and said, “What I’m doing is trying to find my roots, like Alex Haley.” Vincent Mina, President of the Maui Aloha `Aina Association, spoke of the connection between healthy soil, healthy food and healthy people. A great advocate of improving soil vitality and adopting time tested organic growing practices, Mina also participates as a Maui County Farm Board member. He said he is about to embark upon a 10 day visit to Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania, and plans to bring back new ideas and methods to help support family farms on Maui. Steering Committee member Nadine Newlight listed a number of key environmental issues, including a proposed plastic bag ban, recycling, invasive species and genetically modified organisms. John Naylor told me he joined the Steering Committee in the last election cycle in 2006. “I have always voted in every election since I was eighteen,” he said. “I realized that there is a lot of apathy out there. I like the educational component of the `Ohana Coalition, not just telling people how to vote, but helping them form opinions on crucial issues.” McCormick noted that their organization also follows up with elected officials once they are in office. The goal, he said, is to keep them accountable for what they stated about issues during the interview process that leads to endorsement.

n a Maui News Viewpoint article in June, `Ohana Coalition Maui President Ed Lindsey said in addition to the interview process, past voting records and sources of campaign contributions are also considered before endorsing candidates. bon season is here. Throughout the summer, across the island, people of all ages and walks of life will take part in the colorful, musical and culturally significant tradition of Bon Odori or “Bon Dance,” which is directly related to Japanese and Buddhist cultures. Bon Odori originated in Japan around 500 years ago during the Muromachi period (13361573,) though according to a June 2006 newsletter by the Honpa Hongwanjii Mission of Hawaii, Obon services were being practiced as early as 600-620 A.D. Obon refers to the actual religious service that is held specifically to honor one’s ancestors. An Obon service generally takes place directly before the Obon festivities like Bon Dance begin. Many sources say that the origins of the dance are due to the story of Mokuren, a disciple of Buddha. For those of you that have not heard the story, it goes something like this:

t’s believed by many that during the time of Obon, spirits are free to come back to the physical world to check in with their families and commune with them. At the end of Obon, the spirits are required to go back to the ethereal plane. The festival always takes place in the summer months. In Japan, depending on the region, it takes place from either July 13-15 or Augusts 13-15. Here on Maui, we’ll be celebrating Obon from June through August.

The celebration lasts only three days in Japan, but here in Hawaii we spread it out over the whole summer so we can enjoy numerous festivals on different islands. Naturally, Obon in Hawaii began when Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii to work on the plantations. It’s interesting to note that according to a 2006 Honoloulu Advertiser article “Drumbeat rises on bon dance” by Mary Kaye Ritz, Obon’s popularity in the islands took a nosedive with World War II when all things Japanese were put under a microscope. Throughout the years it has regained its populairlty. Today in Hawaii, people from all faiths and ethnic backgrounds participate in Obon and Bon Odoriin celebration of our unique and rich cultural heritage. On the other hand, according to Ritz’s story, the Obon celebrations in Hawaii may actually be more traditional than many that take place in Japan today. “Immigrants want to keep it the same,” Christine Yano, professor of anthropology is quoted to say. “They have a real reason — it’s tied to their cultural identity.”

s a child, I was terrified of Bon Dance. When I was six years old, my great-grandmother passed away on Oahu in July. A devout Buddhist, she was originally from Japan. Her death, and the Buddhist rituals surrounding it, unnerved me. I was frightened by the guttural voice of the monks and the hollow vibration of the gongs used in her services. When we came back to Maui after her funeral, it was Obon season. We lived in Paia at the time and from our house, I could hear the gong and music coming from the Mantokuji Buddhist temple down the street. When I asked my mom what the sound of the gong was for, she told me that the priests were calling all the ghosts in to dance with their families and that when the gong sounded late at night, they were sending the spirits back home. She told me it was called “Bon Dance” and that we’d be going to it in the near future. In my six-year old mind-especially after just witnessing my great-grandmother pass away–the whole idea of dancing ghosts who respond to gongs was totally not cool. Top it all off with a title pronounced “bone dance” and I was 100 percent adamant that if my family wanted to actually take me to the event, they were as crazy as I suspected and would have to do it with me kicking and screaming. Luckily for my parents, as a little girl, I was easily coerced into attending Bon Dance by the promise of getting to wear a gorgeous kimono. My great-aunt from Japan was visiting us at the time and helped me get dressed.
A
will always remember my first Bon Dance at the Mantokuji Buddhist temple in Paia because it was the first time that I participated in something that I feared. It was also the first time that I understood that sometimes fear is irrational. It was a gorgeous summer night. There was a huge ring of dancers that surrounded a yagura tower, which is a tall wooden scaffold that usually contains a taiko drummer leading the dance with a rhythmic beat and speakers piping out Japanese music that I had only heard while eating dinner with my family at Fujiya’s (an old Japanese restaurant that used to be a staple of Wailuku.) I was quickly captivated by the music. It’s not that it
I
was soothing, but instead repetitive and mesmerizing. I remember being surprised that the scene and overall feeling at the Bon Dance wasn’t creepy or spooky but upbeat and happy. There were a lot of smiling faces, the sound of laughter and (as far as I could tell) no ghosts. My dad talked me into joining the circle of dancers. The dancers moved in a rhythmic and repetitive motion. Many of their movements signified manual labor like digging. It’s said that the celebratory dance is also used to soothe the spirits of our departed ancestors visiting the physical realm during Obon. Although I didn’t know how to do the dance, an elderly Japanese woman took me under her wing and guided me through several rounds. I was elated. Turns out, Bon Dance is a lot of fun. In fact, I spent most of the night dancing in the ring–my kimono flowing–wondering if it was true that my great-grandmother was next to me watching and laughing. oday, I take my own kids to Bon Dance. Usually we go to the one at theMakawao Hongwanji Mission. The kids love the food booths, games, gorgeous colored lanterns and games. They also love the dancing although neither of them has participated yet. I’ve talked to my daughter about the significance of the event, especially because it is a festival that is tied closely to our ethnic culture. She’s seven and thankfully hasn’t had to deal with a death in the family yet, but it’s inevitable that one day she will feel the pain of losing a loved one. It’s my hope that when that day comes, she will recognize Obon as a time to reflect on our ancestors and the sacrifices that they made while forging a new life for us here in Hawaii. And yes, I clarified that Bon Odori, or Bon Dance has nothing to do with bones. Just ghosts. MTW

Fondue for Two The Melting Pot is the perfect place for a big night out When my boyfriend Dave and I went to dinner at the Melting Pot at the new Gateway Center of Lahaina last Wednesday, we weren’t expecting it to be a big night out..
The Melting Pot 325 Keawe St., Ste. A202, Lahaina, (808) 661-6181 Open Nightly 5 - 9 p.m. $$$
The idea of a fondue restaurant was a little intimidating to me. I mean, I have enough trouble getting food from my plate to my mouth without adding hot, molten cheese to the equation. And what were the rules about double-dipping? The first surprise came when we walked through the door and encountered the elegant, floor-to-ceiling glass
wine cellar. We weaved our way through the low-lit bar to the swanky dining room, oohing and ahhing over the lux décor and colorful contemporary art work on the walls. Cozy two and four person booths were tucked around intimate corners, but we took an elegant table at the front of the restaurant. In the center of our table sat an empty silver fondue pot. Sam, our highly trained and professional server, made a few suggestions of his favorite cocktails before I settled on a pomegranate cosmopolitan and Dave ordered a concoction called the “Love Cocktail” that had peach Schnapps, Malibu rum and four adorable heartshaped slices of strawberry. With our thirst satiated, we dove into the menu. The Melting Pot offers several options for a la carte dining. Cheese and chocolate fondues, salad and main courses can be selected at random and enjoyed on their own, but for adventurous souls with big appetites the four-course “Big Night Out” menu is the way to really experience all that Melting Pot has to offer. Our big adventure began with a
Caribbean cheese fondue that Sam whipped up en pot right at our table. Pineapple juice, garlic and peppadew peppers melted into gouda and gran queso cheeses and we got to work dipping several different b r e a d s , apples and veggies into the sweet a n d spicy mixture. There was a fair amount of dripping on my part, but I man-

ONO KINEGRINDS aged to keep it on the table and not in my lap. While we were enjoying our first taste of the fondue lifestyle, our salads arrived. I selected the California salad with crunchy romaine, gorgonzola cheese, walnuts and raspberry black walnut vinaigrette. Dave’s salad had baby spinach, baby Portobello mushrooms, onions, bacon and a warm Burgundy shallot vinaigrette that Sam poured tableside. We couldn’t decide which was better and ended up sharing both. The entrée was an entirely different kind of adventure. From the three featured selections, we chose the indulgent compilation of bite sized filet mignon, lobster tail, peppered shrimp, jerk-seasoned sirloin, vanilla rum chicken, pork tenderloin, butternut squash and vegetables, all of which were presented to us uncooked. We were given a bubbling pot of broth with garlic, cilantro and citrus and instructed to cook each item for about two minutes. No less than eight sauces came to the table. There was teriyaki sauce for the poultry, ginger-plum sauce for the seafood, gorgonzola port sauce for the steak, melted butter with herbs for the lobster and curry sauce

for anything and everything. I felt like a kid playing with her food as we skewered meats and cooked them to perfection in our aromatic broth. We mixed and matched our sauces so many times that no two bites tasted the same. I was having so much fun I didn’t even mind that I was out at a restaurant cooking dinner for myself. When we were about half way done I threw in the towel and when Dave picked up my slack I’ll admit I felt more than a little jealous of his bigger appetite. I’m one of those people that actually has to “save room” for dessert, which means he got way more lobster than I did. When the plates were cleared we had to make the biggest decision of our night: which chocolate fondue to share. Dave was being a purist and wanted to stick to basic milk chocolate, but I wanted something fancy. In the end, we weren’t able to compromise. He got milk chocolate and I chose the yin and yang dark and white chocolate combo. I’ll admit that I ordered it because it was pretty. A heaping plate of cheesecake, brownies, marshmallows, strawberries, pound cake and bananas took a chocolate Jacuzzi before making the short trip into our mouths. Apparently they’ll keep bringing you plates full of sweets until you run out of chocolate or beg them to stop, but after our big meal one was more than enough for us. MTW

Wash out the taste of overindulgence with some of Lighthouse’s ambrosial house blend coffee. It’s almost medicinal for that hung over feeling. Other than the yummy coffee and tasty snacks, most notable in the Lighthouse Café is their couch. At Grandma’s Coffee House you’re able to truly enjoy the natural serenity of Maui while enjoying delicious (non-alcoholic) drinks such as their chai. That is, you’d enjoy the serenity, if only the throbbing at your temples would stop. Open daily 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. 18 Wahelani St., Kula, 878-2140.

Alcohol is a depressant, right? A stimulant like say…never ending coffee ought to bring you back to the land of the living, right? Okay, I know it doesn’t work like that, but in a perfect world, it would. Denny’s is the perfect place to try and get over your hangover. Not only will they amply arm you with coffee to fight the effects of that pesky CNS depressant, Denny’s breakfast foods will have you ready for action in no time. Kahului andKihei, open 24 hours.

At 8:00, you can share the joy and amazement of watching fireworks with your family. For all you neurotics out there, the fear of renegade shrapnel hitting you should begin at about 8:05. Free. [HULA] Literally the Hawaiian word halau means “a branch from which many leaves grow.” Today, the word “halau” usually refers to a hula school. “Wekiu” means “of the highest rank.” In The TENder Years, Kumu (teachers) Hula Karl Veto Baker and Michael Casupang, highlight their decade long journey together and the creation of Halau I Ka Wekiu. This performance is a celebration of their halau’s 10th anniversary and will feature songs from KUmZ’s new CD “KUmZ – Listen to Your Heart.” Not only will the audience be stunned by the halau’s breathtaking performance, but they will also be able to share in personal tales told by the kumu. This is obviously an event not to miss. [YT] Tickets: $10, $25 & $35. For more info visit www.mauiarts.org

Anti-Superhero Genre Bending and Plot Surprises Follow Will Smith plays anti-hero Hancock in director Peter Berg’s against-the-grain superhero movie that features a tricky plot revelation to put a fresh spin on its storyline. Alcoholic lay-about Hancock doesn’t remember much about his past as he goes about intervening on random crimes and accidents with a recklessness that has won him few

supporters around Los Angeles. That is until Hancock saves public relations exec Ray Embrey (well
played by Jason Bateman) from a speeding train. Ray returns the favor by insisting that Hancock enter prison and go into a rehab program before returning to public life as a more responsible citizen and law enforcer. Hancock is a smart post-modern superhero movie with a civic-minded heart. Charlize Theron spices up the fun as Ray’s doting wife Mary, who knows a bit more than her husband about what makes Hancock tick. It takes a while for its allegory about the ravaging side effects of certain well intentioned but selfish people on the ecology and those around them, but its theme of responsible citizenship is unmistakable. Will Smith’s Hancock is a gifted individual who takes his powers for granted because he’s forgotten their source. Contrary to the superhero genre formula that front-loads the how and why of a character’s abilities, Hancock dives into the deep end of what this contrarian guy, who can stop a speeding locomotive with his body, is doing with

his life. Sleeping on public benches with a hangover and cursing out young kids is not the way most of us want to see our heroes behave. Newcomer screenwriters Vy Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan (Home Fries) have fun refolding the superhero format to contain messages and ideas that raise as many questions as they address. Hancock is an action/adventure dramedy where its characters connect with the audience in an understated way. There’s an element of curiosity in its characters’ emotional motivation that keeps the action engaging. When the rehabilitated and newly suited Hancock takes over for embattled police officers at a bank heist standoff with hostages, it’s his intentionality as a concerned and accountable person that buoys the comic-laden set piece. In spite of its attention to grand spectacle, the movie doesn’t demand the same kind of audience expectation that movies like Iron Man and The Hulk do. What it does
accomplish on a gratifying level is promising less and delivering more. It’s a rarely seen feat that crucially involves a commercial trailer that uniquely doesn’t give away the whole plot as most trailers do. Still, its double-secret weapon is Jason Bateman as a liberal hammer attempting to inspire corporations to give away products free of charge to the people that need them most. In return the company obtains the use of a cheesy heart-shaped logo alerting the public to that firm’s commitment to helping humanity. Even here though the movie raises a subtle question about how far Ray’s stroke of genius should go. For a robust action story about three people from very different backgrounds attempting to make a positive influence on their world, “Hancock” is a step in the right direction. I don’t think the filmmakers have reinvented a genre so much as they have introduced a new set of rules. Is Hancock better than The Hulk? You bet. MTW

Art Alexakis brings a new Everclear to Maui Art Alexakis is Everclear. Sure, there are several other talented musicians who have contributed greatly to the band’s global success. But front man–guitarist, songwriter and remaining original member of the band–Alexakis is the creative force whose artistic talent and obsessive drive to succeed skyrocketed the band out of Portland, Oregon oblivion and into worldwide, alternative grungepunk superstardom. Alexakis and his childhood angst, that is. It’s hard to find a published article about Everclear that doesn’t reference Alexakis’ runaway father, low-income upbringing or teenaged cocaine addiction. Apparently, Alexakis writes such good songs because he’s had it rough. He hasn’t exactly had such a smooth adulthood, either. Professionally, Alexakis had spent years forming bands that failed to find a following before finally hitting the mark in the grunge era of the early nineties with this three-piece rock group that included bass guitarist Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert, who was replaced two short years later by Greg Eklund. But just sounding good wasn’t going to be enough in the cut throat music industry, so perfectionist Alexakis pushed his band to tour and record relentlessly until finally getting recognition for their second album, Sparkle and Fade. “Santa Monica,” a single from that 1994 album, was the first song to resonate with a widespread alternative audience and is still one of the most popular Everclear songs that has been released. On the heels of that hit album Everclear released So Much for the Afterglow in 1996 that met the mark with the confessional, daddy-hating ballad “Father of Mine” and the love song/bitch session “I Will Buy You a New Life” about the perils of coming in to new money. Those two albums and a third, Songs From an American Movie, Volume 1: Learning How to Smile went platinum as Everclear’s slow burn success ignited. The catchy, reflective “Wonderful” from that album has been arguable the most successful song the

band put out. But just when it seemed like the band was on their way to stardom, it all came to a screeching halt. After one more album in 2003, Montoya and Eklund left the band due to personality conflicts, and for a short time Alexakis went solo.
Everclear Wednesday, July 9 Tickets: $42.50 Hard Rock, Lahaina, 667-7400
Now a new Everclear is touring with a fresh lineup that includes bassist Sam Hudson, guitarist Dave French, keyboardist Josh Crawley and Brett Snyder on drums. Front man and mastermind Alexakis is still at the helm writing memorable songs and pushing for publicity. The latest album is a collection of revamped classic rock cover songs, a big deviation from their standard original releases. The Vegas Years is a fun album that showcases the diversity of this new group of musicians and the potential for the band to continue attracting a mainstream audience. With a force like Alexakis’ drive to succeed, Everclear isn’t likely going away anytime soon. MTW

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Congratulations on your new baby! Only, where is he? Okay, here’s the deal: Giving birth isn’t the only way to lose twenty pounds overnight. While ditching that extra weight might be more amazing if you had a baby to show for it, I’m not sure. You’re suddenly free of an incredible burden that was really beginning to take its toll. A baby, precious though it might be, would be a whole different kind of burden. Before you mourn its absence, consider: might you not be better off as you are, at least for the moment?
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Some woman is suing a lingerie company because of a thong accident. She claims a metal clip flew off her underwear and hit her in the eye. While this might be legit, my Spidey Sense says she’s just fishing for a big payout from a rich corporation. Who knows? She might even get it. But she’ll have to live with being known as the chick who can’t put on her undies without getting hurt, and who’s petty enough to make a lawsuit out of it. Your own door to Easy Street might open a crack this week. Consider the price(s) you might have to pay to take a stroll down that road, and make sure they’re worth it to you, before you do.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) No one quite understands responsibility like you do. Because you’ve always taken yours seriously, you can easily assess what a new duty will cost you, in terms of time and energy. Thus you should already know that you just can’t take on this new burden without ditching a host of others. You simply don’t have enough room and time in your life. This isn’t a tank of low-maintenance sea monkeys; it might as well be a brand-new baby. In order to give it the care it deserves, you’ll have to completely upend your routine. Are you prepared to do that? If not, make sure you’re crystal clear with those who’d unload this responsibility upon you, and tell them, “Thanks, but no thanks.”
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You know those friends, the good ones? If you showed up on their doorstep and needed a place to crash, there’d be no question whether or not they’d let you, and you wouldn’t be embarrassed to ask, either. Count yourself lucky if you have more than one or two of these gems. Honor them this week. The thing with friends like these is so much can go unspoken that you can end up taking each other for granted without meaning to. Let them know how much they mean to you. It goes without saying, and they know. But it’s still nice to hear.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Some people navigate the world wearing blinders. Since they only see a narrow sliver of reality, they make terrible decisions. While I hope you’re not one of these poor fools, you surely wear a few filters— some of which may compromise your ability to make wise choices. Some of these filters are likely to be forcibly stripped away this week. That might be a bit shocking (how shocking depends on how many you were wearing in the first place), but it’s the only way you’ll be able to arrive at the “right” decision. Cope as best you can with this new, less-censored version of reality on your own—but don’t be afraid to ask for help. You may need it.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) In India and elsewhere, you use your left hand to wipe your ass, and nothing else. In fact, it’s considered insulting (and, presumably, disgusting) if you employ it to eat or interact with other people. There are certain tools for certain jobs that you really can’t use elsewhere, at least not without offending people’s sensibilities. Language can work that way, too. Certain words and ways of interacting are only appropriate in certain contexts. Since you’re likely to get those mixed up, make sure you have someone on hand who’ll give you a warning sign when you venture into dangerous territory. Keep your left hand and your more colorful vocabulary to yourself this week; you don’t need them for the task(s) in front of you.
E M P L O Y M E N T OUTDOOR YOUTH COUNSELOR Come make a difference working in the great outdoors. Immediate openings at Eckerd outdoor therapeutic programs in NC, TN, GA, FL, VT, NH and RI. EOE/DFWP (AAN CAN) $ MODELS WANTED $ For magazine print work. $250$900. Ages 18 to 35. 573-3712
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Don’t let scare tactics get to you. These dogs are all bark. They could bite you, and hard—which is why the scare tactics might work. Recognize that it’s probably not worth their while, though. You needn’t be foolishly brave; I suppose if you give them reason enough they might make an example of you. However, there’s no real reason to let them totally derail you. Slow down and keep an eye on their sharp, sharp teeth. But continue on your way. They’ll do their best to terrify you, but once you’ve moved on anyway, they’ll find other things to do, and almost certainly forget all about you.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your frantic search for suitable and effective distractions has finally come to naught. You’ve run out. You can procrastinate no longer, because there are simply no excuses left. Now it’s time to put up or shut up. Either you finally deliver on your promises, or you fess up that you’re never going to, and bear the consequences of that. What’s it going to be, Aries? Were you as full of hot air as some people suspect (and, if so, are you brave enough to admit it out loud)? Or will you come through and make good on your word?
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Imagine if making love to someone tapped you directly into their nervous system, so you’d literally feel what they felt. Rape would certainly become a thing of the past. We’d also have trouble lying to our partners or hiding infidelity. Would it be the end of intimacy altogether? Or would we explore a new kind of intimacy, where we acknowledged all of our own desires, instead of hiding, denying, or lying about them? I personally think it’s better to love the whole, imperfect person, rather than only cherishing some edited version of them. This week you have a chance to move to a new level of trust with someone. It’s not likely to all be good, but I think it’s worth going there, anyway. The question is, do you?
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I’ve seen some Geminis undergo dramatic transformations in the space of moments. Some might find it alarming that one minute you might be mild-mannered Bruce Banner and the next you’re something akin to the Incredible Hulk; others will think it exciting. Whatever other people’s reactions, your goal should remain consistent: learning to keep your metamorphoses under control. They are potentially a tremendous source of power, if you figure out how to properly harness them. Until then they will always be a great weakness. Since this week’s a great time to transform your Achilles’ Heel to a secret font of strength, please focus on making that happen.

Imagine you’re a clam, using your entire being to keep the two halves of your shell sealed tight, making you more or less impervious to the world. But what’s happening? Against your will, your muscles begin to relax. The shell opens. You’re being steamed, my dear, and it’s no bad thing. This is what you’ve needed for a long time—someone who has the tools to gently force you to open up and make yourself vulnerable. Let them, even though it’s probably frightening. You’ve done as much as you can cooped up in your safe little world. It’s time to see and do more. Don’t be scared. It’s going to be (mostly) great. Inevitably, human life in the modern world generally has a negative impact on the planet. There are ways to offset this, of course. Let this be your focus this week. Plant a tree for every year you’ve been alive, and if you have any kids, one for every year of their lives so far. There are also other, less concrete (but no less effective) ways to subtly counterbalance your impact on the planet. You’ve already put off this kind of thing for too long. Since this is a great week to stop thinking about it and just start doing it, I can’t see why you’d wait.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
BY STARR BEGLEY STARR@MAUITIME.COM
Friday, 4 p.m. Head down to the airport from Makawao feeling like I’m forgetting something major. Turns out it’s just the baby. 4:25 The hubby and I are shocked at how empty the airport is. Seriously, it’s dead. Oddly, there are still boatloads of TSA workers. 5:05 Finally on the airplane even though technically, we’re supposed to be landing in Oahu in a few minutes. 5:06 The stewardess asks that someone, anyone move from one of the front rows to the back row because of balance issues. Not sure if I’m okay with the fact that 120 pounds will make that much of a difference. 5:20 “Sliding into first, my butt is gonna burst! Diarrhea!” 5:25 Completely humiliated and grossed out that there was no water for the sink in the tiny closet they call a bathroom, I hobble back to my seat. 7:45 At my sister-in-law’s house in Palolo eating an awesome dinner while her boyfriend impersonates her hilarious drunken escapades. Everyone was amused except her. 8:32 Going through my mother-in-law’s amazing and ginormous yarn collection while her 70 pound puppy attempts to hump me. 9:17 Hunker down in front of the boob tube to watch Juno with the hubby. 9:40 Totally feeling Juno’s predicament. 11:05 Have a complete meltdown, tears and all, because the hubby refuses to take me to Zippy’s. What? They have good pudding! Saturday, 6:45 a.m. Wake up to a garage sale for mom-in-law’s church that should be a contender for the Guinness World Book of Records. 6:46 Wash the mascara streaks off my face from last night’s tantrum and browse. I got Heelys (my size!), an electric juicer, a large straw bag, thick and comfy hoodie, yarn, and a Hannah Montana pillow. 9:40 Arrive at Hawaii’s first MMA Sport and Fitness Expo at the Blaisdell. 10:00 Talk story with Egan Inoue and realize again how gorgeous his wife Marcia is. I’m talkin’ smoking hot. 11:20 Chat with Brandon Pieper from 808 Fight Factory and buy a completely great yet totally obnoxious T-shirt from Westside Fight Gear. 1:16 p.m. While eating chicken long rice and kalua pig at the expo, I have an “Aha!” moment and have zero doubt in my mind that this is the sport and the people that I love and feel comfortable being around. 1:17 The concept that all local people surround me makes me smile while taking a picture with Brandon Wolff. 2:15 Hug Maui’s Dylan Clay and check out the huge goose-egg on his foot that he’s had since his fight in May. 3:45 Medicate and leave the expo because the friggin’ slipped disc in my neck is killing me after walking around for hours. 5:02 Hang out at the family home with the hubby’s auntie–she used to dance hula for the Cazimero Brothers–while watching a replay of The Ultimate Fighter Season Finale. 6:45 Hoot and holler at the TV during Kendall Grove’s fight against Evan Tanner even though I’ve seen it a million times. 6:54 Pack up the suitcases and head to the airport. 11:57 Finally back home and in bed hoping that when I dream, I dream of flying knees. Starr Begley would like to publicly apologize to the gentleman who had the ill luck of being seated next to the bathroom on the plane. MTW
