ADVENTURE X
FITNESS BOOT CAMP WRITER CARRIES HC&S WATER Somehow, it seems, Anthony Pignataro has missed the obvious in his piece, “Water for HC&S” (The Maui 10, June 21, 2007). Warren Watanabe didn’t say small Upcountry farms “would not exist” because he was trying to make nice with HC&S; he was simply stating the facts. As Anthony pointed out, HC&S founders Henry Baldwin and Samuel Alexander built the original ditch of what would become the East Maui Irrigation (EMI) system. Then they built all the rest of the ditches and tunnels that bring water from as far as Nahiku to the dry Upcountry area. The company has maintained and operated the system for more than a century, right up to the present day. Some people question whether HC&S/EMI should have control of all that water, but at this point, the reality is that they do. If those ditches and the people who run them quit working, there would be no water from Haiku to Kula, for farmers or anyone else. I once asked a county Water Department employee if the county is working on plans for taking over the system, and the answer was an emphatic “no!” So, until someone decides to terminate EMI’s water lease, and someone else steps up to take over the system, the entire Upcountry community depends on that system. -Jill Engledow, via email
BUS BLUES (This letter concerns the Maui bus system, which we wrote about in the May 3, 2007 cover story “Easy Rider.”) When Roberts took over the operation of the Maui bus system from MEO almost a year ago there was an immediate improvement. However, the service has gradually deteriorated and is now almost back to the MEO level. Here are some of the problems I have noticed on the Central routes. The drivers think nothing of leaving a stop early, which is much worse than leaving late because those who miss the bus have to wait another hour. Several times I have mentioned to the driver that (s)he was leaving five, six or even seven minutes early, which will cause some people to miss appointments, classes and so on. They always ignore me. They apparently do this to compensate for gradually falling behind schedule and running quite late toward the end of the day. At the Ka‘ahumanu Mall one Wailuku bus (#1) is scheduled to leave at the half hour, while the reverse route (#2) is scheduled to leave on the hour. So near the half hour you get on the bus
marked “Wailuku” assuming it is the #1 but it’s really the #2 running 25 minutes late. Since they don’t put the numbers on the bus you get on the wrong one and end up wasting an hour or more. Can it be so hard to label the bus with the route numbers? Another problem is inconsistent policies. Some people will ask to be let off at nonscheduled stops and the driver complies. Others are denied such requests. Similarly, you may ring the bell just before a certain stop. The driver says, “We always stop here, so don’t ring the bell.” Okay, next time you don’t and the driver sails past the stop because no one is waiting there. You say, “Whoa! Let me off,” and the driver scowls as (s)he pulls over and says, “Next time ring the bell.” Come on, guys, you can do better than this. -Kurt Butler, via email
SO DRAMATIC Congratulations on 10 years of independent reporting on Maui! I am writing to especially thank you very much for the recent excellent article your writer Mira Allen wrote about depleted uranium [DU] and the play Ten Fingers, 10 Toes (“The Drama of DU, June 21, 2007) which we sponsored on Maui. A year or so ago you also published an extensive feature article on DU. We greatly appreciate your commitment to shedding light on the subject of this horrendous health danger to our soldiers, their families and, with DU coming off of firing ranges in Hawai‘i, our ‘aina and its people here in Hawai‘i. -Mele Stokesberry, President, Maui Peace Action, via email
CORRECTIONS In our June 21, 2007 story “The Drama of DU,” we mischaracterized the status of state House Bill 1452, which deals with depleted uranium testing. The bill stalled in House/Senate Conference on April 27, and hasn’t been seen since. Also, we should have identified the speaker of the quote “The military is the biggest unregulated dirty industry polluting our planet today” as Lindafaye Kroll. Oh, and in our June 28, 2007 10th anniversary issue, we got the name of former contributing writer Elaine Gast’s company wrong. She owns Four Winds Writing, Inc. Maui Time welcomes letters commenting on our coverage, but only if they’re complimentary. If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar—that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. We also reserve the right to edit your letters. Send your letters to the editor via e-mail (letters@mauitime.com), regular mail (Letters to the Editor, Maui Time Weekly, 33 N. THEAGENDA Maui County Council Land Use Committee Thurs., July 5, 1:30 p.m. Field Trip! It’s to check out the “change in zoning for the Maui Business Park Phase II project (Kahului),” somewhere “200 yards beyond the end of Hookele St., just past its intersection with Pakaula St.” The zoning for this area is/was agricultural, heavy industrial and residential but the plan is for just light industrial to move in! Better bring your own snacks, because I doubt if any will be provided. End of Hookele St., Kahului

Robert Sasaki of A&B Properties, Inc. wants “approximately 179 acres in Kahului” to be legally changed from farm, factory, and residential land into work land. That’s cool, but it does make me wonder about the rest of A&B’s land. How many more years of federal government-subsidized cane fields do we

Your roosters go off all day and night! Did you know that they’re making me a zombie? Sleep deprivation is cruel and unusual punishment, brah. Hate to break it to you, but you aren’t the only one living on this island. Obviously your roosters’ constant squawking is something you’ve grown used to; perhaps even enjoy. Though I’ve tried—believe me, I’ve tried—I can’t. Funny thing is that when your dogs bark, I can deal with that since they may very well be protecting you. But the caged, underfed, filthy roosters seems to have no other purpose than to mess with my sleep. Often I reject a midnight bathroom run out of fear that your pets will think the bathroom light is the approaching dawn. In fact, things are so bad that I refrain from inviting family and friends to visit me— there’s no paradise where I live. I’m at my wit’s end: I’ve talked to you about this, but all do you do is nod your head and stare blankly into space. Guess my next move will be to call the police and the Humane Society. DOWLING NOW OWNS MAKENA Well, it’s official. On Tuesday, June 26, 2007, Dowling Company and Morgan Stanley Real Estate officially bought Makena Resort from the Japanese railway giant Seibu for $575 million. But have no fear—well, have no fear if you find reassurances from developer Everett Dowling to be reassuring: “We are committed to developing Makena into the most environmentally sensitive community in the state of Hawaii,” Dowling promised, according to the June 27 Maui News. Hey, wasn’t Makena already one of Hawai`i’s “most environmentally sensitive communities” before the resort went in? Oh well, what’s done is done. At least, that’s what I think I’m supposed to think after reading The Maui News piece. I mean, they must have waited until the penultimate paragraph before randomly mentioning some of Dowling’s other big island developments (like Maluaka, which includes 71 super-condos priced $4 million and up right on Makena’s Maluaka Beach) without context or explanation, implying that they’re really rather mediocre and completely unrelated to his buying Makena Resort.

PR TSUNAMI Looks like Maui Land & Pine’s big million-dollar investment in Hawai`i Superferry Inc. is finally starting to pay off. And the company’s high-priced public relations firm has gone into blitz mode. First I got a McNeil Wilson Communications press release on June 26 announcing that the Superferry had left Los Angeles Harbor and was on its way to Hawai`i. Then two days later I got another release telling me the Superferry was still on its way to Hawai`i. That release also listed a bunch of vantage points on Oahu to see the Superferry’s weekend arrival, as well as a list of estimated times when the Superferry would be visible at all those vantage points. Seriously, there wasn’t this much hype when the Dalai Lama came to Maui, and he inspires many millions of people around the world. MTW

Taking it Easy Not sure if any of you have noticed, but the Liquor Control Board of Adjudication has really been taking it easy this year. Since the Adjudication Board has the job of levying fines and/or suspending liquor licenses to punish rule violations, it’s doubtful many license holders are particularly worried about this trend.
An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching. -Mohandas K. Gandhi The enormity of the problems and challenges surrounding our planet and its current 6.7 billion inhabitants can be very unsettling. Sometimes it seems our best efforts to stop the war, save the whales or protect the environment are mere drops in a very leaky bucket. As regular readers of this column know, it’s my intention to inform and inspire so that collectively we may make better choices, both in our own community and for the planet as a whole. Far be it from me to preach, but I would like to share my observation of a phenomenon that qualifies as the greatest form of renewable energy I’ve ever seen. The last stop on my two-week Mainland jaunt brought me to the San Francisco Bay area. A short freeway drive to the east is San Ramon, and tucked back in the rolling, golden hills of horse country is M.A. Center. The picturesque ashram there, complete with rose gardens and lotus-filled lake, is a spiritual retreat attracting thousands who travel to be with guru Maya Amritanandamayi, or Ammachi, the “Indian hugging Saint.” Amma (Hindu for “Mother”), as she is known all over the world today, has inspired and started innumerable humanitarian services. “She is recognized as an extraordinary spiritual leader by the United Nations and by the people all over the world,” states the website www.amma.org. “Though Amma makes no claims herself, those who watch her closely notice that she is the greatest example of her teaching. Her disciples and believers absorb her teachings by just watching her.” For the past 35 years Amma has dedicated her life to the uplifting of suffering humanity through the simplest of gestures—an embrace. Each year, she tours India, Japan, North and South America and Europe. With a simple hug, she has personally blessed and consoled more than 25 million people. My wife Heather met Amma back in 1988, at a small gathering in Carmel, California. That was the second year she visited the United States, which also included a stop on Maui. There, she appeared at an event at old Maui High in the creaky gymnasium
LC Watch
There were no hearings in either February or June. The January and March hearings sported just two cases apiece, all with no contest pleas that meant for relatively speedy disposition. The April meeting had a whopping three cases, though again all defendants pleaded no contest. The May Adjudication Board had just one hearing, which again was a no contest plea. Water lillies at Amma’s ashram near San Ramon, California
building, since burned to the ground. Amma hasn’t returned to Hawai‘i since. Heather first brought me to the ashram near San Ramon in June 2000, two months after we were married. I trusted her judgment, and went into the experience with an open mind and heart. What I noticed then, and in subsequent visits, is that the ashram is a microcosm of something that works.
Volunteers guide the traffic, greet visitors, chop the vegetables, serve meals, wash dishes and do all other manners of seva (spiritual practice of selfless service). It is expected that each visitor may perform some seva, to contribute to the greater good of all. In recent years the ashram has added a snack bar, espresso stand, chair massage, flower stand and a used/new clothing store, all of which are staffed by volunteers. The proceeds go to Amma’s numerous charities. see SOMETHING, page 11
When someone asked Amma why she receives every person who comes to her in a loving embrace, Amma replied, “If you ask the river, ‘Why do you flow?’ what can it say?”
To recap, from January to June, the Board of Adjudication heard a mere eight cases. In the same six-month period 2006, the board heard nearly four times as many cases—28 in all—four of which were not guilty verdicts demanding trials. And the board would have heard even more, but the three hearings scheduled for the March 2006 were postponed when then-board member Lance Collins got booted for his decision to run for a county council seat. When you look at the fiscal year totals—July 1 to June 30— the numbers are just as striking. In fiscal year 2006, the Adjudication Board heard 37 separate cases, an average of three per month. But in fiscal year 2007, the number of cases had dropped to 24, just two a month. What’s more, if the upcoming July 5 hearing agenda—no cases, just a few quickie findings of fact approvals— is any indication, fiscal year 2008 will be more of the same. -Anthony Pignataro

WEDNESDAY, June 27 Here’s a little news item that needs more play: according to a June 25 posting on the Pacific Business News website, the federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a report saying “neither the U.S. government nor the states are ready for bird flu, though it has spread to 60 countries and will likely arrive here sooner or later.” One big “obstacle” to preventing a national—or island—disaster, according to the report, is a probable “squabble over jurisdiction” between federal, state and local agencies over who should deal with the pandemic. What’s more, the GAO states that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has no idea
how much anti-viral medication people would need should an outbreak occur. If any of this sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because our reporter Cheryl Ambrozic already wrote about the frightening lack of a local bird flu outbreak plan in our April 26, 2007 cover story “Bird Flu: How Maui will deal, and not deal, with an avian influenza pandemic.”
THURSDAY, June 28 This week I really have to salute Maui County Deputy Planning Director Colleen M. Suyama. It’s rare to see a county official—especially one making $92,300 a year—screw up so badly in public that the state Office of Information Practices (OIP) gets to slap him or her across the wrist. Suyama’s little act of impropriety occurred way back on March 13 of this year, during a Maui Planning Commission hearing. According to the five-page OIP opinion issued yesterday, during the hearing Suyama “violated the Sunshine Law” by restricting the testimony of Sharyn Matin, a private citizen and president of the West Maui Preservation Association (WMPA). The commission had asked Matin to testify about the group’s funds. In the spirit of public discourse, Suyama constantly interrupted Matin during her testimony. Though the OIP very generously concluded that Suyama’s violation was “not intentional,” they did say that the agenda item Matin was discussing was so poorly written and vague that Suyama should have just kept her trap shut and let Matin talk. The OIP also refused to address the issue of Suyama’s demeanor—“which WMPA argues was inappropriately badgering and berating in tone and constituted a tirade,” according to the opinion—concluding that her tone “was at most testy.”
FRIDAY, June 29
Looks like Bob Awana is no longer Governor Linda Lingle’s Chief of Staff. He’s been by her side since her first campaign for governor back in 1998, but last night she cut him loose like so much twisted wreckage trailing behind her mighty ship of state. And all because he’s become mired in a couple international scandals. First we have Awana allegedly getting blackmailed by Indian national Radjatta Patkar over some mysterious chick in the Philippines. Patkar’s been in a Honolulu jail since last March, having been arrested by FBI agents following a hush-hush sting operation that you can read all about in Greg Mebel’s June 14, 2007 cover story “The Strange Case of Bob Awana.” As if that wasn’t bad enough, a few weeks ago the Honolulu Advertiser reported that that Awana’s been under investigation for over a year for allegedly bribing Saipan officials in an attempt to steer a lucrative trash contract to a firm he co-owns. Both cases are pending, but Lingle doesn’t seem to be in a mood to wait for the outcome. “Late yesterday afternoon Chief of Staff Bob Awana and I discussed his current situation,” she wrote in an email message to the local press (except us, for some reason), “and we mutually concluded it was in the best interest of all that he resign his position effective immediately.” Resign? Where I come from, that’s a good old-fashioned sacking. What’s really jacked up is that Awana has from the beginning said that he informed Lingle about his part in both investigations–something Lingle has never denied. So why dump him now? Is it because he’s involved in some allegedly shady deals, or because we all found out that he’s involved in some allegedly shady deals?
SATURDAY, June 30 I generally consider myself a pretty progressive guy, but since when has it become fashionable for a young couple’s post-sexual intercourse pillow talk to include phrases like, “I don’t agree with everything Hitler did, but you have to admit he really brought his country together”?
SUNDAY, July 1 Don’t ask.
MONDAY, July 2 Sometimes, this column literally writes itself. “The man hired by the state to investigate the Bureau of Conveyances has run afoul of the state Ethics Commission.” So reads the first line to today’s Honolulu

Star-Bulletin story “Ethics panel hire is ripped on ethics.” Seems that Hilton Lui, who works for Hilton and Associates, Inc., has compiled a six-inch thick report on unethical behavior at the state Bureau of Conveyances that will never see daylight because of Lui’s own apparently unethical transgressions. According to the article, Lui “clapped and cheered” when the state Senate voted to can Department of Land and Natural Resources Director Peter Young and had even “lobbied a senator to vote against him.” What’s weird about all this is that the Ethics Commission has worked with Lui before, and apparently thought him a stand-up guy. Of course, what’s really weird about all this is that the Ethics Commission is out-sourcing its ethics investigations, but if everyone else is doing it, why not them?
TUESDAY, July 3 Oh, and in case you’re wondering whatever happened to Young, he’s still at DLNR. According to a great June 21 Hawai‘i Tribune Herald story (later highlighted on the poinography.com blog), “Young’s now the deputy to the chairman and is overseeing, among other divisions, the Bureau of Conveyances—the very department whose troubles led most directly to Young’s rejection by the Senate.” Now isn’t that just beautiful? Anthony Pignataro sometimes feels that he has a vested interest in political corruption. MTW

ROBREPORT SOMETHING: continued from page 8 As someone who has scrutinized many a development proposal and political candidate, I’m constantly reminding myself to “follow the money” to find the real story behind the glossy exterior. In the case of Amma, the broad reach of her charitable endeavors is astonishing. Amma has used charitable donations to accomplish what governments and corporations have not. The December 2004 tsunami ripped through Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka, leaving close to 200,000 dead and many thousands more homeless. Amma immediately pledged $23 million in support, much to her followers’ surprise. Since that time, she has provided temporary shelters and fed thousands; helped oversee building 5,000 new homes, supplied medical care, vocational training, and textbooks; and presented new sewing machines for the women and boats for fisherman. Actual services provided were estimated at nearly $46 million. A year later, Amma was among the first to donate to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, bestowing $1 million to aid recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast. M.A. Center volunteers provided food, clothing, school supplies as well as emotional support. The South India province of Kerala, where her main ashram is located, has the highest literacy rate of all India. There Amma’s charities have built a state-of-the-art hospital, university, medical college, engineering institute, nursing school, orphanages and much more. In Hindu, the term Mahatma is reserved as a title of respect for those renowned of spiritual virtues and high-mindedness. Like her great countryman, Mohandas K. Gandhi, who helped show the world the value of peaceful resistance, Amma is similarly revered. A satguru or “true teacher,” Amma has challenged some of the traditional, patriarchal beliefs
NEWSOFTHEWEIRD which have long guided the religious and political practices of her homeland India, and beyond. Born in a small fishing village in Kerala in 1953, as a young girl Amma was often shunned and thought strange, as she would be immersed in spiritual reverie. Her compassionate qualities were also apparent at an early age, as she would take food or clothing to elderly or poor neighbors, and attend to their housekeeping or other needs. Today, she continues to offer darshan (literally, “presence with the guru,” but now synonymous with her hugs) to thousands of people every day. When someone asked Amma why she receives every person who comes to her in a loving embrace, Amma replied, “If you ask the river, ‘Why do you flow?’ what can it say?” For me, visiting the San Ramon ashram to watch and receive Amma’s darshan was a mesmerizing experience. With a rousing backdrop of live Indian bhajans (devotional singing) and a full band of musicians, sometimes lasting all night, the energy seemed to spiral right up through the roof. Hour after hour, person after person arrived in the line for their embrace with Amma. Some left weeping, others smiling ear to ear. My own experience is of deepening appreciation and wonderment with each visit and every hug. Much as our cars need a regular tune-up, and our homes a spring cleaning, we count on this yearly sojourn to bolster us and inspire our efforts. With our spiritual batteries charged, we come to cherish the magnitude of grace in our lives, even with the apparent craziness of the world surrounding us. I relish Amma’s unwavering positivity, omniscience and nurturing spirit. She reminded me that each act of compassion and selfless service is its own reward, no matter how insignificant it may seem in the big scheme of things. Even a small pebble dropped into a large pond will alter its surface, sending ripples far and wide. As we try to surf the little ripples and big waves that come at us each day, it would be nice if we could do so with the reverent joyfulness and compassionate attentiveness shown by Amma. By doing so, we just might be creating something that works. MTW
THIS WEEK IN NEOSEXUALITY People can develop intimate, romantic relationships with objects (beyond mere fetishism, which produces only short-term arousal), according to one of Germany’s most renowned sexologists, Volkmar Sigusch, interviewed for a May report in Der Spiegel. A reporter claimed to find individuals infatuated with a Hammond organ (and who feared infidelity when a technician performed repairs), New York City’s Twin Towers (whose lover bathed with a miniature version) and the Berlin Wall (which a woman ceremoniously “married” in 1979 and legally changed her name in acknowledgment). Sigusch said this objectophilia was another indication of society’s increasing “neo-sexuality.”
POLICE BRUTALITY Sachio Kawabata, 61, was awarded the equivalent of about $5,000 by a court in Kagoshima in January because the police abused him during interrogation over possible violations of election law. The judge found that Kawabata suffered “great mental anguish” when police wrote his family name and derogatory messages on pieces of paper and forced Kawabata to stomp on them.
LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES While the California Assembly debated an open-hand-only spanking bill for parents this spring, the Bethel Baptist Church in El Sobrante continued to demand that spanking by flexible rod is the only punishment acceptable to God and that will produce wisdom in the child. No sturdier weapon may be used, nor the open or

closed hand, nor even mere yelling, according to a church pamphlet cited by InsideBayArea.com for a May report. Said one parishioner-parent, “With my girls, the spanking relieved them of their guilt, which allowed them to be happy in a very short time afterward.” Said another, “We disagree with timeouts… That’s an attack on spanking.”
NO BANANAS?! In May, The Times of London, interviewing witnesses in Diyala province in Iraq, described scenes from the hard-core Salafist version of Islam being enforced (similar to what the Taliban imposed in Afghanistan), including breaking the fingers of those who repeatedly smoked cigarettes, prohibiting grocers from displaying bananas (as “obscene”), and requiring them to screen cucumbers from tomatoes (as the latter are “feminine vegetables”). One local man said he assumed that another restriction that farmers modestly cover their goats’ “nether regions” was just a rumor, until he saw a goat wearing boxer shorts.
STYLIN’ AND PROFILIN’ For fashionable women this season, the area just above the breasts is the most important part of her chest, according to a May New York Times report. A protruding collarbone is said to suggest a taut, fit (even though covered up) body. And many young Sikhs in India are dispiriting their traditionalist parents by trimming years-long growths of hair and abandoning their signature turbans to favor a more Western look. However, a “turban pride” backlash has developed, featuring support groups, an International Turban Day, and a Smart Turban CDROM with tips on choosing just the right turban look. MTW

It’s been about two weeks since the winners were announced at the 30th annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. You’ve probably seen the lists of winners in various local publications. But what you probably haven’t seen is why they’re such a big deal in the first place. Or what it’s like to actually be there.
Wednesday, June 20, 2007 Hawaii Convention Center, Oahu 5:52 p.m. The reception area outside is awash in color. Dazzling arrays of orchid and gardenia adorn the upswept coiffures of women in floor-length gowns, accompanied by men in tuxedoes and formal lavalava with elaborate maile and ginger lei. Crowds of people file past tables of workers, the KHNL News crew, and the live band Mana‘o DNA, on their way into the Center’s Kalakaua Ballroom, where the evening’s awards ceremony—“Celebrating 30 Years: The Stars of Distinction”—will take place. The Na Hoku Hanohano Awards began in 1978. At the time, popular radio deejay Krash Kealoha wanted to find a way to boost his allHawaiian station, KCCN-AM, while also officially recognizing the multitude of amazing recording artists in Hawai‘i, most of whom were largely ignored by awards shows on the mainland. That first Awards presentation was deter-
mined by public vote. Melveen Leed won Best Hapa-Haole Album, Best Song and Best Single for “I Love You Hawai‘i,” Cecilio and Kapono won Best Contemporary Album, Best Composer and Best Engineered Album for Night Music, and The Brothers Cazimero took Best Male Artist, Best Group and Best Contemporary Hawaiian Album for In Concert. By 1982, the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts developed as the organization of recording professionals that administers the ceremony, much like the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences does for the Grammy Awards.
6:27 p.m. Ki ho‘alu master and ordained minister David Kahiapo officiates a pule, followed by a performance of the Kaumakapili Church Choir. Attendees at the 100 or so tables dine on broiled salmon and beef filet, Molokai sweet potato and lilikoi cheesecake. Before the show is broadcast, winners are instructed to take “no more than 30 seconds to say your thank you’s, and we ask you to prepare what you say in advance…” The Hawaiian Music category wasn’t added to the Grammy Awards until 2005. Its inclusion was as an addition to the “folk” field, and nominees included a series of compilation

And the year after that, it was Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar—Live from Maui. Some local music industry insiders balked. For them, after all this time, the effects of the Academy seemingly making “safe,” perhaps even uninformed, choices—picking various artists’ albums versus singling out a deserved musician or group, awarding nonHawaiian producers, choosing albums that contained no Hawaiian language whatsoever—dampened the pride of finally having Hawaiian music recognized in the prestigious international awards ceremony. But it’s just a start. And while hope remains that this newfound Grammys’ category will eventually include these things, most recognize that the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards more accurately represent the greater scope of the

7:43 p.m. After a video tribute to Hawaiian musicians who’ve recently passed—like Don Ho, Linda Dela Cruz and Kawai Cockett—various musicians take the stage, including this year’s Hoku cochairs Marlene Sai and Kenneth Makuakane, to sing “This is Hawai‘i.” Melveen Leed presents a Lifetime Achievement Award to Loyal Garner. And Best R&B/Hip-Hop Album nominee Afatia performs. I am becoming overwhelmed by my ignorance of the world of Hawaiian music. Although I thought I knew enough to recognize the artists of the past few years, I really had no idea. But watching the stories of Lifetime Achievement honors for groundbreaking musicians like Loyal Garner, the Surfers, Society of Seven, Rene Paulo and Gabe Baltazar, I started to get a clue. The Surfers were a Beach Boys-esque 1960’s pop group of young Hawaiian men, including Clayton Naluai, Pat Sylva, Alan Kalani and Bernie Ching. Rene Paulo was a pianist, also popular in the ‘60s, who combined the melodies of Japan with Hawaiian lounge music. And Gabe Baltazar, everso-stylish in his gentleman’s cap, is an alto sax master and 50-year veteran of the music industry.

A raucous crowd grows in number by the satellite bars. Manu Boyd gives a lesson in Haku Mele—the award presented to best achievement in creating a new song or chant exclusively in Hawaiian. Paula Fuga, winner of Most Promising Artist, gloriously sings her thank you speech to riotous applause, followed by the Barefoot Natives’ Eric Gilliom’s hilarious and shocked acceptance of his win for Contemporary Album of the Year. “I’m just so grateful and honored to have so much support from these people—I really wasn’t expecting to win…” Fuga told me later, at the Winner’s Circle. “I feel terrible I forgot to thank my boyfriend on TV!” “Did I forget to thank Brian [Kohne— producer]?” Gilliom said, also at the Winner’s Circle. “The creator, the producer of it all? Yeah. I thanked Willie though, said he couldn’t be here tonight because he had a sinus infection, the gout, and a bad rash.” MTW

Savior of Flavor Cloud Nine Cafe brings culinary divinity to Upcountry I’m a glutton when it comes to good food. I don’t eat until I’m full, I eat until it’s gone—like the whole pot. Not just that, I eat often. If I go a few hours without munching on something, I get cranky and mean. Meaner than normal, and that can prove to be disastrous. I just can’t help it. Food makes me feel peaceful, happy, sane and alive. I’m typically not particularly picky when it comes to food. I have kids, so some of my snacks consist of leftover Mac & Cheese, hot-dogs and random noodles in ketchup. Except Vienna sausage. I draw the line at the little wieners. I just can’t do it.

A few weeks ago, I discovered Cloud Nine Cafe in Makawao. This place is turning me into a picky eater. It’s outdoors right next door to Komoda Bakery (a major staple in my diet) and across the street from Rodeo General Store (which has a great selection of beer and wine) so you could say that it’s in the perfect location. Not only does Cloud Nine serve up amazing delicacies at fast-food prices, it has great ambiance. It kind of puts the $7 extra-value meal consumed while downshifting to shame. The cafe is pretty much a genius idea. It resembles a gigantic glorified covered street vendor cart. Ordering my food there always makes me feel hip—lots of polished stainless steel, fresh baked goods, latte’s and a full breakfast and lunch menu. They have a few tables where you can eat your food in the crisp Makawao breeze and are working on getting the space for a bunch more. My favorite lunch-time meal from Cloud Nine has to be the Kalua Pig Po’ Boy, with some homemade soup and a Yoga Berry smoothie. Cloud Nine transforms kalua pig from something you eat at graduation parties into something the Food Network really needs to highlight. Its soft, succulent meat, with just
enough smokey flavor to make your eyes roll up in ecstasy, is piled on a ciabatta roll that is one part soft and one part chewy (totally perfect) with Asian slaw. The concoction is topped with Lavender Poha Berry dijonaise and a little Hoisin sesame sauce. I’m going into withdrawals just talking about it. I’ve tried the lentil soup du jour—and let me tell you, it’s more like a meal than a soup. Slow-cooked and chock full of tender, simmered vegetables and massive amounts of flavor. The Yoga Berry Smoothie makes you feel healthy and happy. It’s blended with bananas, mixed berries, organic apple juice, organic yogurt and honey. Technically, a smoothie alone should be enough to fulfill a normal person. Their menu is extensive. For breakfast I think I’m going to try the Mediterranean Quiche, or maybe the Indonesian Fried Rice. On second thought, I’ll try both. On my list for lunch is the Grilled Miso Beer Chicken (how yummy does that sound?) and Mongolian Baby Back Ribs. As a side note, business partners Scott Olival and Jahlel Hunter are just as yummy as their dishes. Just thought that you should know that. Admit it, good food is always better when served by a smokin’ chef. MTW Top: Grilled Miso Chicken plate and Hibachi Salmon. Right: Chef/Owner Scotty O

Hot Metal Friday (July 6) through July 29, at the Iao Theater, Wailuku [STAGE] The Full Monty was a 1997 film that featured six unemployed steel workers who decided to bare all onstage. It was a story about male empowerment, really. And freedom. Ha ha. Anyway, the movie inspired a Broadway musical in 2000, albeit slightly Americanized. But they’re still unemployed steelworkers who decide to make some cash by doing a male striptease after seeing how a touring Chippendales-esque crew makes their women so randy. They have to work through all kinds of fears, anxieties and body-issues (yeah, join the club, guys) and in the process, find strength in friendship and teamwork. I wonder if they hold hands naked… Tickets: $20 adults, $18 seniors and students. Sundays, $15. Friday-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 5 p.m. For info or tickets visit www.mauionstage.com or call 242-6969. An adults only production due to language and themes. I’ll say. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

A Bedazzler Bonanza
Calling All Ancestors
Saturday (July 7), all day at Oskie Rice Arena, Makawao
Saturday (July 7), 8 p.m. at Lahaina Jodo Mission
[RODEO/PARADE] There’s nothing that quite says “independence” like the whole annual 4th of July parade and rodeo up in Makawao. I’ve been celebrating my freedom this way since I was a mini Podagee princess in pink cowboy boots and a side ponytail. The best part about the whole thing for me is the people-watching. You would be amazed at the outfits that some people come up with. It seems like everyone busts out the good ol’ Bedazzler. Rhinestones, lots of rhinestones. Bling is great, but I like cowboys way better. There will be lots of cowboys (and girls) up at Oskie Rice Arena later in the day. And beer. Beer is good while cowboy hunting. The only question I have is, are my chances better with a steer wrestler or bull rider? I favor the bull riders, but it seems like their equipment may be “temporarily unavailable” after a good ride. Hmm. Something to think about. Parade starts at 9 a.m., Rodeo begins at 3 p.m. [LILIANA BEGLEY]
[CULTURAL] When I was little, we lived in Paia and during the summer my dad would take me to the Bon Dance over at the friendly neighborhood Buddhist graveyard. I would get to wear a kimono and dance around in a circle. The whole point of the Bon (Obon) dance is to summon and give thanks to your deceased ancestors. Even as a little kid, I would get chicken skin during the festivities. Then again, at the age of five, I thought it was the “Bone Dance,” which makes a lot of sense. In honor of the Bon Festival, I would like to thank my maternal greatgrandparents, Harue Ideguchi and Kamo Kuroda, for coming to Hawai`i where they struggled, lived, loved and spawned a whole family of highly intelligent and beautiful individuals. That would be where I come in. Free. Lahaina Jodo Mission is located at 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina. Call 661-4304 for more info. [LB]

[VEGAN LECTURE] “When I came out of medical school,” William Harris, M.D. told a crowd a couple years ago, “I didn’t know anymore about nutrition than I did when I went in.” A vegan since the early 1960’s, Harris helped found and currently runs the Vegetarian Society of Hawai`i. A pilot, skydiver and active swimmer, Harris is probably in better shape than you or I, even though he’s also in his 70’s. This Monday Harris will make another appearance as part of the Vegetarian Society’s monthly lecture series, talking up the need for people to eat raw nuts and seeds while taking a tenderizer to the insanely popular (the key word is “insane”) high-carb diets. As usual, the lecture is free, as are the vegan refreshments. For more information call 575-7694. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Selling Disaster Michael Bay fetishizes war Stories of Michael Bay’s shouting fits during the filming of Transformers have spread around Hollywood. It’s therefore not surprising that the blockbuster director’s outsized sense of everything is on par with massive though bloodless machine ultraviolence that fills the screen.
Transformers
★★★★★ (zero stars)
Rated PG-13/140 mins.
Transformers is designed as an insider movie made to order for fans of the ‘80s cartoon, toys, videogames and comic books about Autobots and Decepticons, two opposing gangs of gnarly metal-morphing robots that expand exponentially from cars, planes and tractor trailers into massive metal gladiators. Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) is the good-guy leader of the Autobots, who speaks in a condescending God voice intoning theme-line ultimatums and platitudes that might impress 10-year-olds, but could send cringes through adults concerned about the potential brainwashing effect on their children. Amid a plethora of shameless product placements for American car companies, and a certain toy manufacturer, lies a bare-bones story about high school junior Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), the greatgrandson of an Arctic explorer who retrieved a frozen gigantic evil robot called Megatron (leader of the Decepticons), along with a cube of “raw power” called an “Allspark” that the bots badly want. Endless noisy chase sequences and city-leveling titan clashes attend the CGI masturbation between good and bad colossal

robots, as if there were a difference. Rhetorical sloganeering stems from a pro-war bent that’s supported by the film’s parallel subplot, set in Qatar where U.S. military forces fight a losing battle against Decepticons disguised as helicopters or giant metal scorpions. The familiar sports maxim “no pain, no gain” is changed into an often repeated “no sacrifice, no victory” adage with considerably more zealotry. When an armed fighter tells Sam, “You’re a soldier now,” it’s agonizingly clear that the filmmakers are intent on gearing child audiences toward combat, although it’s unclear who or what they might be fighting. As in The Last Mimzy, an entire family is hauled off to the pokey by a Homeland Security-styled team. In this case, it’s Sam’s mom and dad that are aimlessly arrested by John Turturro as the goofball Agent Simmons. The film’s poster tagline, “Protect/Destroy” resonates with America’s oxymoronic national and foreign policy. And the story devolves into an urban battle climax
where civilian causalities invisibly pile up beneath tons of rubble. For our trouble, we are anesthetized to the violence with plenty of bombastic music and a fusillade of crashing sounds albeit sans the screams of any wounded victims. There are plenty of racist and sexist jabs interspersed throughout with dialogue about “Bros before hos,” and Sam’s car freshener spelling out “Bee-otch.” On Air Force One, a Bush-like President asks a female assistant to “wrangle him up some ding dongs.” Jon Voight slums as a Secretary of Defense John Keller who wants us to know that the robots are “way too smart for the Iranians.” Even as a big spectacle popcorn movie, Transformers comes across as dumb-as-a-stump for all of its idiotic robot characterizations that make Jar Jar Binks sound like a genius by comparison. It’s a sickening force-feeding commercial frenzy to sell cars, toys and war in the same breath that it pawns itself off as “cinema.” This is not cinema. This is acid kool-aid for children. Don’t drink it. MTW

They Keep Going and Going and Going... Photos: Pietro Ortiz
Kids & Company—a safe place to drain your kids’ batteries So my baby brother got married at Seabury Hall’s Cooper House over the weekend. It was beautiful— manicured grounds, lots of stiletto heels, hundreds of glasses of wine, homemade beer, two kegs and, of course, the reflection pond. If you have never been up to Seabury for the craft fair or other events, or watched Jimi Hendrix’s Rainbow Bridge, let me explain this reflection pond situation: It’s this snazzy tiled pool that’s about a footand-a-half deep by 20-or-so-feet long. There’s also a fountain thing in it, and my guess is that it’s there for
meditation, beauty and reflection of some sort. Enter the Flower Girl: dark curly hair, eyelet lavender dress completed with a chic bow satin sash—we’re talking Ralph Lauren kid model. She’s six. She’s also my daughter, and hell on beaded sandals. Anyway, she decided that it would be a really great idea to take a swim in the pond. She swam in that pond like a fat kid consumes chocolate cake. We had to pull her out of it after about an hour-and-a-half just so her skin wouldn’t slough off. Yes, kids have a lot of energy—raw creative energy that needs to be burnt off. If you’re feeling me on this, you’ll be happy to know that I found a safe place for your peeps to release the creativity without the threat of pink eye and the dreaded flesh-eating virus. Kids & Company, a contemporary art studio in the Maui Mall is the answer. This place is packed full of stuff for kids to make, paint and create. They have a huge selection of pre-fired pottery that’s ready to glaze. In our personal collection at home we have a Princess mug, Princess plate, two tri-sectioned baby plates and a teapot with matching cup. The folks there set you up with everything that you need. Basically, you pick the piece that you want to work on and they provide you with tons of different brushes, glazes, sponges, stencils and encouragement to get the creative juices flowing and the kid batteries drained. After you paint your masterpiece they glaze it for you and in a few days you have this gorgeous piece of functioning pottery that is completely unique. Pottery isn’t the only thing that you can do at Kids & Company—you can stuff your own animal friend (not
taxidermy, more like Build-a-Bear), make a mosaic, learn watercolor, acrylic—you pretty much name it and they got it. They have several regular events that take place weekly. Bisque It Baby Mondays is a gathering place for new moms who want to bring their fresh bundle of joy out to kick back and bond with other new moms. Toddler Tuesdays involves storytelling, snacks and painting. Wacky Wednesdays are filled with multimedia art classes. Thursdays are “Mommy and Me” days, and every Friday is Family Fun Night where the whole family can enjoy 25-percent off their total bill. Right now, Summertime Art Camp is going on. Starting July 9, the camp theme will be Mask Making. Basically, Kids & Company is an art studio that’s child and baby friendly. I took my one-and-a-half-year-old and they were totally cool with it. He did leave covered in ink but hey—self-expression is self-expression. Reflect on that. MTW

BY DAVID VAN NOSTRAND DAVID@MAUITIME.COM
WHITE STRIPES “ICKY THUMP Icky Thump opens with a wandering organ scale and a steady bass beat. It’s a transmission, and the White Stripes are waiting for an answer. Forty seconds into the title track, they receive their signal: an unapologetic, unrelenting electric guitar rift that aims for center mass. A guitar hook like the one in “Icky Thump is hard to put into words. It is visceral and arresting, like falling in love, only louder. Houston, we have a White Stripes album. “Icky Thump, the song, landed solidly at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but it remains something of an oddity as a single. The subject is topical, immigration, and the chorus, a mocking string of la, la, la’s, serves only to make the inevitable reprise of that bone melting guitar line more alien. The album that follows is a disorienting jumble unified only by Jack’s infectious guitar freakouts and strident lyrical delivery. There are bagpipes, synthesizers, and mariachi trumpets. There are rock songs and requiems. It’s a difficult trail to follow; the band is always out-of-reach but clearly visible on the horizon. The remoteness of the White Stripes is one trademark of a band that has always excelled at portraying themselves as mythical. Jack and Meg give no easy answers about their relationship, their art, or their choice of wardrobe. They want you where you are, following them where they lead, never close, always in the distance. This self-imposed isolation can limit Jack as a songwriter. “On 100 M.P.H. Torrentional Outpour Blues, he sings. “And it’s that color that never fails to turn me blue, so I just swallow it. The listener gets the impression that Jack was about to revel something about himself or his worldview, but then reconsidered. The guitar break that follows is meant, purposefully, to provide space. It swirls Jack upward and lands him lightly on a pedestal where he can be admired safely. This reserve means that the White Stripes never write songs that live inside their audience, and they aren’t designed that way. They are instead the musical equivalent of Stonehenge. The eclectic nature of Icky Thump can be explained by the album’s ninth track, “Rag and Bone. In the song, Meg and Jack trawl a mansion for underappreciated curiosities. “Bring out your junk, and we’ll give it a home, Jack quips. The challenge goes a long way to explain the bagpipes and the mariachi band. The White Stripes see value in the diverse, opportunity in the unexpected. The etymological home of the album title is Lancashire, English. The phrase “Icky Thump literally means, “What the heck? The title is not meant to be clever, and it does not provide any practical insight explaining the album’s content. It’s simply one more piece to puzzle over. But as I listened to the album for the 10th time, following its bewildering twists and admiring its noise, it occurred to me that title was perfect and provided me with what my lexicon lacked: a phrase foreign enough to articulate how I felt about the record. Finally in possession of the right words, I said/spoke the title out loud and to no one in particular. Icky thump, it was a question. —Warner Bros. 2007

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Don’t be impatient. You actually have the answers to most of your questions already. Three seconds of reflection would make you realize it. Sometimes you ask the question to whoever’s nearby before you ask it of yourself, and realize you already knew the answer (or could have easily figured it out) if you’d just bothered to try before opening your mouth. I’m being nitpicky, I know. But sometimes nitpicky stuff like that means the difference between getting the job, the date, the adoring spotlight, or not.

It’s so great how you already know everything, Leo. It makes my job a lot easier, as well as anyone who thought they could actually teach you something. How do you live with being so perfect? Sure, you’ve got some tricks up your sleeve. You’ve been around the block a few times. But when it comes right down to it, you are, like every other human on the planet, pretty much clueless about, well, everything. Inject some humility into your routine. Remember that you, too, have tons left to learn, and will never get it all. Then, and only then, will you even get some.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) If you were here last week, I would have sat on you, and forced you to enjoy some sunshine and beautiful weather, and to ignore everything else you had to do. Of course, you wouldn’t have been able to relax and enjoy it, because of some incredible panic and frenzy about your neglected To-Do list. Still, this would be a good week to chill out. Do it the Virgo way, if you have to (which you probably do), and get the most important shit out of the way, so when you ignore the rest, you don’t freak out. Then, really ignore the rest and, naturally, don’t freak out.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
ECO Rental Cars
Libras are sponges. You soak up whatever’s around you, good or bad, and incorporate much of it into who you are. Sometimes you need a good squeeze, to lose some of your crap, stuff you absorbed ages ago and have never gotten rid of. You also need to surround yourself with high-quality people. I hope you’ve already done that, at least, and if you haven’t—what the hell have you been doing? Find yourself some keepers, pronto. Then, get those good, caring, smart and inspiring people to give you the squeeze you need—both metaphorically and for real, to get rid of the old bad, and make room for the new good.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
BIO-BEETLE.com 808-873-6121
Powered By BIODIESEL
We are, in general, getting smarter as we get older. For example, people usually score higher and higher on IQ tests as they age. Of course, that makes sense. Using your brain is practicing thinking, which means you’ll get better at it. The main problem here is atrophy. There are parts of yourself you haven’t used in ages. You might be too daunted to get them back into play. I understand your trepidation, but it’s time to get over that. Oil up those squeaky, rusted joints, and give it a go. You’ll be amazed at how quickly all those half-forgotten skills come back.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Some people feel paralyzed because they feel disempowered, like they can’t do anything. They imagine they have no choices. That’s usually not you, Sag. If anything, you’re paralyzed by too many options. When you can make virtually anything happen, go anywhere, and do whatever you like, choosing just what you’re going to do can be a trial. Some Sags are so befuddled that they end up not doing anything. I hope that’s not you, squandering so much brilliant potential. If you really and truly don’t know what to do with yourself, I bet you know someone who’ll give you an earful on the subject. If your internal guiding voice is unclear, why not try listening to them?
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Stop thinking of your body as a machine that needs to be maintained and fed. It’s time to consider it, instead, as simply a source of pleasure, whatever its shape, limitations or imperfections. Many Caps regard their corporeal forms as simply vehicles to carry their brains around in, and do their absolute best to ignore their bodies, ignoring or denying the pleasures of a hedonistic meal, a good shit, a fantastic shag, a massage or a million other things. Is your body inconvenient and annoying? That’s screwed up. Find a way to regard it as a pleasure-manufacturer, and let it be just that.
NOW IN CONVENIENT PODCAST FORM! Every Thursday Publisher Tommy Russo, Editor Anthony Pignataro and Associate Editor Samantha Campos discuss the thinking and decisions that went into the week's issue. It's called
‘Beyond the Ink’
and it's another way we're bringing you Maui's most interesting and informative coverage.
Check it out at www.mauitime.com
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) There’s a difference between confidence and ego. You don’t need to be the best at anything, or push harder than everyone else. Go for that, if that’s your thing, but I would suggest a more modest, achievable and satisfying goal: simply being well and truly comfortable in your own skin, your own life. Ambition is all well and good, and I hope you don’t give it up. All I’m suggesting is that in the meantime, you also be happy with who and what you are. If your dream doesn’t at least include this vital step, you’re missing something important.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) People practice stuff in their dreams all the time, and then show amazing, measurable improvement the very next time they try it. Studies have found that virtually the same neural pathways are exercised in the brain when you dream about doing something as when you actually do it. It’s true, you can only get so far by thinking (or dreaming) about something; eventually you just have to actually do it. However, you can get a lot further than you imagine. Perhaps a bit of mental practice (awake or asleep) is what you need, to succeed.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) If all you need are willpower and determination, you’re golden. However, if a situation requires more from you—tact, say, or long-term discipline—you might be screwed, as they’re hardly your natural strengths. You can develop them, however, until you can deliver a back-handed compliment as well as any Capricorn, or put your nose to the grindstone with the humble fortitude of a Virgo, or listen as sensitively as a Cancer. There are a few skills you could stand to improve on. You know what they are, and you know pure desire and drive aren’t suitable substitutions. This week, work on the pieces you’re missing.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Just take a chance. Sometimes people are open to you, but lack the confidence or the motivation to stick their necks out and take a risk making the first move. It might not be fair that you always have to be the one who risks appearing the fool, but right now that’s just the way it is, if you want anything exciting or interesting to happen. Of course, you always have the option of the same old nothing you’ve settled for so far; simply do nothing. Don’t risk rejection or embarrassment. That’s certainly easier. It’s also incredibly dull. I believe you’re more fascinating than that. Prove me right.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Forgive and forget. Holding a grudge, no matter how justified, is like wearing a 50-pound weight around your neck. It requires so much energy and represents such a burden that you might as well just give up doing anything fun, dynamic or brilliant until the score is settled. Geminis are supposed to be footloose and fancy-free. It’s part of your charm. That means getting over and moving on from your setbacks as swiftly as possible, and remembering how to delight in life again, good and bad. This week, shed the 50-pound weight (and any others) you might be carrying, and get over whatever they are, already. It’s time to fly again. It’s already been too long.

Age Before Beauty There is always some specific moment when we become aware that our youth is gone; but, years after, we know it was much later. – Mignon Mclaughlin Sometimes I feel like a very old, 500-pound elephant. Granted, it’s usually right before my period. But hanging out with my cute, skinny girlfriends often exacerbates it. It’s not their fault, of course, but I get to feeling like some cumbersome, extra-large, Hefty trash bag bodyguard to their perfectly petite, compact, Ziplocked perfection (even though I’ve got the inside scoop on their beer-bellied, stretch-marked, celluloid-having, size-two ass!). But then every once in awhile, in the right angle, with the proper lighting, like at dusk or by candlelight, and when the planets align just so, I’ll catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, or off the reflection of a window or maybe just a really clean spoon, and I’ll think, Damn, you a fine-looking woman. It would help if I could get the soundtrack to Stealing Beauty to follow me wherever I go but that’s neither here nor there. The point is—I can be fetching at times. And it’s usually at those times when I’m not trying so hard. Like, when I’m out in the rain at a concert getting muddy, or in my dirty jeans, no makeup, sweaty from a hike, or just relaxing at some dive bar. Actually, the older I get, the less I could give a good goddamn shit about how I look, which can be kinda attractive—when it’s not misconstrued as frumpy. Oh, and I’m oooooold. I mean it’s all relative, of course. I sometimes look at photographs of myself from, say, 20 to 15 years ago—even 10 years ago. And I look at that shiny, sparkly-eyed, fresh and innocent face beaming back at me, and I’m shocked. I was really kinda beautiful when I was younger, before it all went to shit. But of course, I didn’t know it back then. I never thought I was pretty enough. I was insecure and uncomfortable in my own skin. And I wonder how long I will be—in the present—not content with the reality of my beauty, then years from now thinking I was an asshole to not have appreciated it. Will those two versions of me ever catch up? In person, people generally guess my age to be five-to-10 years younger than I am, and I don’t correct them. I giggle nervously or smile coyly, depending, while looking down at my feet, or into my cocktail, and quickly change the subject. So yeah, how I act deviates greatly from 8 to 80. I don’t suppose that’ll ever change. Anyway, lately, just for kicks, I watched the first two episodes of the newest reality dating show—The Age of Love. It’s about this hot 30-year-old guy who has to choose a chick amongst a group of hot 40-ish women and another group of hot 20-something girls. I got into it because I suspect it’s a lot easier to ascertain the differences and depths of beauty between youth and experience on television—where you can watch and judge complete strangers in all their two-dimensional glory. And I was right. The 40-ish women are all very beautiful. They’re fit, look years younger than they are, stylish, successful and confident. So okay, they have crow’s feet when they smile, and a couple divorces—maybe a kid or two—under their belt. But they exude charisma and a comfortable sexuality that Mr. 30 is hard-pressed to resist. And the older women say things like, “I am not a number, I am a beautiful young woman looking for a man who can equal me.” Or, “When I was younger, I didn’t think I was pretty enough, good enough. I’m at the point now where I accept myself—flaws and everything. This is for me, the best time of my life.” And, “I can still do anything a 20-year-old can do. But better.” But of course, those 20-something ho-bags gotta come in with their tightness and their youthful braggadociousness—they are hot and haughty. But their insecurities are as eye-popping as their recent mammiferous additions. These younger chicks say things like, “I have great morals and great thoughts. I need an intellectual challenge… I have a Malte-Poo—her personality is just like mine!” My favorite scene is where Mr. 30, basking in the hot tub with the younger women, is “trying to get to know them.” He discovers that while all the older women have successful careers, the younger girls are doing several jobs at once. One is a dancer and is going to school for business. Another is “doing this and that, here and there.” He tries to get a straight answer out of one 25-year-old hottie, while they sit in the Jacuzzi. “I’m trying to figure out what I want to do,” she said. “Well, what do you love to do?” he asked. She pauses, seemingly thinking hard on the matter, than answers with exuberance. “I loooove to eat.” Samantha Campos doesn’t know how to play the ‘ukulele but can make a mean shave ice. MTW
