FITNESS BOOT CAMP YOU MEAN COLE SMITHEY WAS RIGHT? Last night, several of us attended the Maui opening of Sicko, Michael Moore’s documentary on the state of healthcare in this great country of ours (“Get Well Soon,” June 28, 2007). Take a look at how those with health insurance are not covered for many services and the doctors within those companies get bonuses based on their DENIAL of patient claims and requests for services. With our brilliant system, we rank Number 37 in the world in quality of health care, infant mortality rates and we die sooner than our counterparts in England, France, Canada and even Cuba. Why are we number one in Gross National Product but so far down the ranking just below Slovenia? Because of the profit motive of all the pharmaceutical and insurance companies (who have reached their highest profits in history) and the American Medical Association. One British doctor interviewed in the film says he earns about $200,000, lives in a million-dollar home, drives an Audi and has a great quality of life. What he really appreciates is that he can treat patients depending upon need, not approvals, insurance stalls or exorbitant costs. How can we even look ourselves in the mirror, when we are shipping patients out of hospitals when they cannot afford it and dropping them off at Skid Row or other inappropriate places? We can spend trillions on war but cannot promise our citizens the right to and access to quality health. Or many people lose their lives because insurance companies will not authorize needed treatments to keep their profit margin as high as it is and pay their CEO millions of dollars annually plus bonuses. It is time to stand up and fight, march and demand our rights. Are we supposed to go to other countries for care or die waiting for insurance companies to approve our needs? We here on Maui have our own set of problems, inadequate facilities and services, but the greater picture is also bleak. It is time to organize and be sure we elect a president and congress who is not being bought off by the large money factored lobbyists (the most are healthcare lobbyists in Washington) and get what we deserve and every other industrialized country in the world has. Enough is Enough. Go see the movie and reflect on it. It will make you sad, mad and say ,“We are not going to take this anymore.” - Hermine Harman, MSW (People United to Support Superior Healthcare co-chair), via email
JUST SAY NO TO PALM OIL On June 30, 150 large spot fires were seen in Sumatra, Indonesia, by a satellite. This is just the beginning of the next four months of Indonesian rainforest destruction using slash and burn clearing for palm oil plantations (“Biofuels,” Feb. 22, 2007). From 2001 to 2005, 10 million acres of the Indonesian section of Borneo were cleared in such a manner for palm oil plantations. Twenty percent of the world’s global warming CO2 gases are created from slash and burn logging and clearing, the third largest contributor of CO2 to the earth’s atmosphere. Hawai‘i is about to undertake a decision and is at a crossroads. At two 100-million gallon biodiesel mega oil refinery plants on Maui and Oahu, our electric utility company is going to share in “green washing” a very unstable, volatile and unethical business of using palm oil biodiesel for electric generation. In the last year Indonesian palm oil has risen in demand and thus in value from $400 a ton to $800 a ton. This in turn is driving the illegal cutting of ancient tropical rainforests by Indonesian/Malaysian military generals and multinational corporations. They call it “land clearing” now instead of logging. Last week 4,300 letters were sent to Governor Linda Lingle from the Rain Forest Alliance in Europe asking her not to approve Biofuels plants using feedstock’s from Palm Oil. This is just the beginning for Hawai‘i and I am afraid that Maui and Hawai‘i will become pariahs for tourism when the word gets out and the world discovers our electricity is generated from biofuel processing plants using palm oil or GMO soybeans from lands which once were magnificent, unique, biologically diverse ancient tropical rain forests. Before we blindly go any further, let’s invest in research in Hawai‘i and find out exactly what we can grow locally for oil and ethanol feedstock, factoring in what lands will be prioritized for food production. Let’s also research how much of this liquid fuel must meet the needs of transportation and finally, maximize the use of wind and solar for electric generation. -Lance Holter (Maui Democratic Party chairman), via email

THE HEAT IS ON Things are looking mighty bad for hapless Hawaiian Telcom. Sometime in September the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will finish its long-running investigation into why customer service problems have been so bad ever since May 2005, when behemoth private equity firm Carlyle Group bought the phone company. And the long knives are really cutting into the company. “[A]dditional regulatory oversight of HT’s managerial conduct is essential if the state of Hawaii and HT’s retail and wholesale customers are to have any chance benefiting from the merger transaction rather than continuing to be harmed by it,” Time Warner Telecom—a wholesale customer—told the PUC, according to the July 2 Honolulu Advertiser. When a cable company is asking for more regulation, you know you’re in trouble. So why didn’t HT drop further? Because according to the Advertiser, the state Division of Consumer Advocacy insists officials shouldn’t punish HT “because it did not deliberately cause the problems.”

THERE GOES THE FUTURE Looks like the future belongs to Monsanto. Literally—in the July 19 issue of The New York Review of Books, noted physicist, futurist and author Freeman Dyson eloquently explains the considerable (though not necessary laudable) power of genetic engineering firms like Monsanto in the essay “Our Biotech Future.” “The public distrusts Monsanto because Monsanto likes to put genes for poisonous pesticides into food crops, just as we distrusted [computer pioneer John] von Neumann because he like to use his computer for designing hydrogen bombs secretly at midnight,” Dyson writes. “It is likely that genetic engineering will remain unpopular and controversial so long as it remains a centralized activity in the hands of large corporations.” MTW

Sprawlification A&B’s plans for expanding Kahului’s boundaries, and more. We’re finally going to get the bill for the Industrial Age. If the projections are right, it’s going to be a big one: the ecological collapse of the planet. -Jeremy Rifkin On Thursday, July 5, the top brass of Hawai‘i’s largest corporation showed up at the Maui County Council Land Use Committee hearing on whether to reclassify 179 acres of agricultural lands on the outskirts of Kahului. The request for light industrial zoning for Maui Business Park Phase II could double the acreage already congesting the Dairy Road gauntlet of retail-commercial big box stores, traffic lights, fast food outlets and parking lots. Alexander & Baldwin owns 69,000 acres of Maui. Thirty-seven thousand of those acres, stretching through Maui’s Central Valley and up across the lower slopes of Haleakala, are growing cane for Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar, an A&B subsidiary. Another 16,000 acres are conservation lands, including watershed areas with water catchment systems managed by A&B subsidiary East Maui Irrigation. But just 459 acres carry the “fully entitled urban” classification, according to the A&B Properties website. Of course, 1,571 Maui acres are “designated urban,” while another 5,220 have “urban potential.” A&B has sought to convert agricultural lands outside Kahului since the revision of the Wailuku-Kahului Community Plan, begun in 1993 and completed in 2002. The focus is on two parcels on Hana Highway—one behind K-Mart/Costco and the other behind Lowe’s and Wal-Mart. To date, A&B has acquired necessary permits and land use approvals from the State Land Use Commission (LUC) and Maui Planning Commission. Twice, an earlier County Council voted against the land change in the Wailuku-Kahului plan revision, though it passed the third time. In 2000, then-Maui County Councilman J. Kalani English led a charge to use smart growth and “modern land-use thinking” to define Kahului’s urban boundaries. “If we don’t, what we’re promoting is urban sprawl,” he said at the time. A&B has a different view, based on their market study that says Central Maui will need more than 270 addi-

LC Watch The Triangle, Part 2 Though police, Liquor Control officials and property owners all say the crime situation in Kihei Kalama Villages (KKV) has gotten better in the last month, it seems like no one really wants to take responsibility for the area as a whole. A full 45 of the 75 minutes of the July 11, 2007 Liquor Commission hearing dealt with KKV. And amazingly enough, most of the news was good. “I can say there has a been a drop in criminal activity in that area,” Bill Pacheco, the LC’s chief enforcement officer, told the commission. “[But there’s] still a lot of activity going on.”
Land Use Committee members in action tional acres of light industrial lands. And they claim that proximity to the airport and harbor will make their sites ideal. But their traffic study makes clear that clustering more light industrial and retail usage in this already congested area would give at least four intersections a Level of Service rating of “F.” That means two more traffic lights would be necessary on Hana Highway, one for the planned Airport Reliever Road and another for the extension of Ho‘okele St. The study also recommends widening Hana Highway to six lanes, from Ka‘ahumanu Ave. all the way to Haleakala Highway. Then there’s the matter of the Airport Reliever Road. The state actually acquired the land years ago, including sufficient area for a “raised grade” intersection behind K-mart. But many in the community spoke out that they viewed this “clover leaf” as an invasive species, and clamored for a stoplight instead. The new airport road would go in behind existing big box stores, and would reconnect to Dairy Rd. just before Pu‘unene Ave., which sounds like a highway engineer’s bad dream. Moreover, A&B’s proposal would hem in the new road with more industrial and retail businesses, essentially replicating Dairy Rd.’s ugliness. We’d lose the golden opportunity to recreate an entry corridor to our island befitting of its natural beauty. A&B would build the Ho‘okele St. extension when they develop the property as part of their “traffic mitigation” for the project. They expect it to reduce Dairy Rd. traffic by as much as 30 percent. Yet by placing more retail and industrial businesses at the town’s outskirts, residents from all over the island would still con-

verge on this bottleneck, even as Kahului’s urban core faces more density from the proposed A&B Kahului Town Center and Aina O Kane projects. A&B’s planning documents and market study brought out another interesting tidbit—that approving this project could create as many as 7,800 full time jobs. Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson questioned that figure, asking where the workers would come from given that Maui has almost full employment. Two years ago, the LUC asked how much land would be needed for affordable housing to accommodate a project of this size. Noting a lack of county policy at that time, they nevertheless recommended requiring at least 10 acres, though one commissioner had suggested 100 acres, for affordable housing. When the County of Maui adopted the see SPRAWL, page 9
Though Maui Police Sergeant Mervin Ching told the commission that “our cases have dropped considerably,” he said his officers are still responding to “many assault cases, disorderly cases, stemming from the area.” The KKV property owner and various licensees told the commission they were thrilled that MPD cars regularly drive through the KKV parking lot, but Ching said showing uniforms in the area wasn’t their job because KKV is private property. “Police shouldn’t be driving through there,” he said. “It’s not our responsibility to take care of problems there.” Instead, Ching asked the LC to raise enforcement officer salaries to attract more people, and also send more enforcement personnel on parking lot patrols. “In the parking lot a drunk is the same as being an inside drunk,” Ching said. Commissioner Ron McOmber bristled at the suggestion. “No, I disagree,” he said, adding that using LC officers as “civil police” is “way outside” their job description. Then he recommended that MPD go to the county for more money to hire more cops, which made Ching bristle. In the meantime, KKV’s owners hired a private security firm, which now sends six uniformed guards on patrols every night, and that seems to have done the trick. But what the LC will do next is impossible to say: commissioners accidentally adjourned their July 11 hearing before deciding to do anything about KKV, and now they will have to wait until their September hearing before getting another update.

Alexander & Baldwin can afford to wait out the long process of land entitlements and permits since most of their agricultural lands are taxed at a very low rate, sometimes less than a dollar per acre. A&B also has diversified holdings, from Matson shipping lines to more than five million square

Residential Workforce Housing Policy last fall, it required that 40 to 50 percent of residential developments sell in the “affordable” price range. But it included no formula for large non-residential projects. So councilmembers asked at last week’s meeting that county lawyers determine what, if any, obligation A&B has to provide additional acreage elsewhere for worker housing. It appears that A&B is poised to offer a small piece of land for that purpose: 13 acres on a sandy parcel adjacent to Maui Lani. This appears to be a strategic move towards another large request for urbanization. Among A&B’s inventory of lands with “urban potential” are 826 acres in Waikapu, adjacent to Waiko Road and the Kuihelani Highway. A&B Properties held a series of community meetings last summer to seek input on this area, which they dubbed their Waiale project. “We are in the process of arriving at a vision for what uses and activities may be appropriate for this area, which comprises what may be one of the last residential expansions of Kahului,” Grant Chun, vice president of A&B Properties Maui, said at the time. Who knew that land stretching halfway to Ma‘alaea and bordering Waikapu could still be considered part of Kahului? At least one professional planner urged caution. “I think we should look at whether it’s appropriate for development in the general plan and [in accordance with] urban growth boundaries rather than get people’s hopes up about whether there’s housing, a college campus or a fairground,” then-planning director Mike Foley said.
feet of retail and office space on Oahu and in Texas, Utah, Washington, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and California. All these investment properties apparently are paying off very well. In April 2006 the Honolulu Advertiser reported that A&B’s Chief Executive Officer Allan Doane is the state’s highest paid CEO, having made $4.9 million that year. Of course, the company prefers the image of being a community-minded neighbor, still pulling on heartstrings that date back generations to Dream City. That’s how it was possible for The Maui News to summarize last week’s meeting as an opportunity to build five soccer fields in the project’s drainage sump area. The lead to the story dealt not with traffic, affordable housing or the proximity to the Pu‘unene mill water stench, but with the “Field of Dreams.” Councilmember Danny Mateo wasn’t impressed by the diversionary tactic. As part of a contingent that went on a site visit earlier that day, he observed how windy the area can get and said soccer balls may just blow away. The response? Since the fields would be down in a drainage basin, the winds may just “blow over the top.” Years ago, I floated an alternative idea. Rather than build more corporate franchises and outlets on these prime ag lands, plant plumerias, orchids, pikakes, pakalana, pua kenikeni, crown flowers and gingers. Then have MCC students, seniors, youth-at-risk and community groups tend the fields. And then bring the new airport road through these blooming fields. Be sure that everyone who arrives at our airport receives a fresh flower lei. If you live here and are returning home, you still get a lei. Word of mouth would create a worldwide appeal that would draw visitors here more effectively than millions spent by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Maui Visitors Bureau. An authentic cultural retail area with lei stands and homegrown foods could provide a modest return on A&B’s investment. But we would preserve our unique cultural heritage while showcasing our distinctive sense of place. Impossible? Maybe you just need to think outside the big box. MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, July 4 At a time when we’re blowing up M-80s, watching Twilight Zone reruns and gorging ourselves on hot dogs—celebrating our grand republic’s birth and all that—it’s funny to watch land developers bitch and moan about how they’re allegedly being prevented from pouring concrete pads and paving roads on sensitive, often sacred land—which is apparently their God-given right. “It takes forever” for his company to obtain building permits and archaeological approvals, developer Stanford Carr says in yesterday’s Honolulu Advertiser. As anyone who’s driven through Waikapu, by Airport Beach on the Westside or down South Kihei Road knows, somehow developers are finding a way to get those permits. In fact, so many developers are getting the okay to build that yesterday’s Maui News carries an unusually fawning story about a proposed county law that would hold up develop-

ment permits unless the developer could guarantee a 20-year water supply for the project. This is, of course, long overdue— big developments like the proposed Makena Resort expansion and Wailea 670 are today moving forward without such guarantees—but why stop at just water? What about requiring new road construction, sewer and water treatment infrastructure as well?
THURSDAY, July 5 Well, it’s official—at least as far as the Honolulu Star-Bulletin editorial page is concerned. In a scathing editorial that blasts Governor Linda Lingle for waiting so long to sack her scandal-plagued chief of staff Bob Awana, the Star-Bulletin credits us—and specifically reporter Greg Mebel—with being the first media in Hawai‘i to explore Awana’s role in an international blackmail affair. “On May 29, [alleged blackmailer Radjatta] Patkar’s arrest was reported by the Calcutta Telegraph, naming Awana as the alleged victim and describing him as ‘the secretary to the governor of Hawaii,’” stated the Star-Bulletin editorial. “The article was e-mailed anonymously to Greg Mebel, a reporter for the weekly Maui Time, according to Mebel. Mebel reported that he e-mailed a copy of Patkar’s indictment to Awana on June 8, requesting comment. Awana responded by planting a front-page article in the Honolulu Advertiser about his cooperation in the case, although not describing the nature of the alleged blackmail.” This may sound like self-important crowing, but when you’re a small, understaffed, undernourished little weekly on Maui and a big Honolulu paper credits you with starting the chain of events that led to the downfall of Governor Lingle’s top guy, we feel it’s deserved.
FRIDAY, July 6 The headline in today’s Honolulu Advertiser says it all: “Conditions prime for brushfires on Maui.” Did you hear that, people? Maui could have wildfires— perhaps even like that horrible, extremely well publicized one last week that destroyed two homes and 2,600 acres stretching from Olowalu to Launiupoko. Shocking, absolutely shocking. To be fair,

Will the county Cultural Resources Commission end this?
the Advertiser redeems itself by including a mind-numbing quote from Maui Fire Chief Carl Kaupalolo, though they buried it three-quarters into the story. “We may want to have our Fire Prevention people talk with major landowners again as we did last year and take a look at these areas and cut firebreaks and conduct grading that would provide access,” he said in the story. So you MAY want to do a little fire prevention, Carl? What a capital idea!
SATURDAY, July 7 Hana beckons.
SUNDAY, July 8 Bad news for fans of Lahaina’s annual Halloween parade and festivities—on Thursday the Cultural Resources Commission (CRC) deferred granting LahainaTown Action Committee (LAC) a permit for this year’s event. Even though yesterday’s Maui News quotes LAC President Jerry Kunitomo told the panel that Halloween is “a very, very positive environment,” commission chairman Sam Kalalau III was hesitant. “I feel that I want to deny it,” he said, according to the paper, “but I need to be fair and weigh out the pros and cons.” While it’s undeniable that Halloween in Lahaina does involve tens of thousands of people walking around in various stages of intoxication and undress, it’s also undeniable—as Maui Police officials apparently pointed out—that even if the panel rejects a permit for the festivities, they will still close off Front Street because legions of party people will show up anyway. Ultimately, after five hours of testimony and discussion, the CRC ended up doing what most panels do when faced with similar dilemmas: they deferred the whole matter to another meeting.
MONDAY, July 9 Anyone out there know anything about cruise ships? Apparently the Hawai`i Tourism Authority (HTA) just figured out that they’re important to our economy, environment, etc., and want to know everything about them. In fact, they’re willing to pay at least $600,000 to get the info, according to the July 5 Honolulu Advertiser. “State tourism liaison Marsha Wienert said the cruise industry merits special attention,” the paper reported. “The latest visitor arrivals for May showed a triple-digit increase in cruise visitors.” Hence the HTA’s 19-page “Request for Proposals to Provide a Hawai‘i Cruise Industry Study,” which calls for “comprehensive, reliable and objective information to assess the cumulative impacts [of cruise ships] on each island and on a statewide basis.” And they do indeed want to know a lot, like an assessment of the industry, how the big ships impact harbors and roads, environmental effects, management and labor practices and even a look at the notorious Memorandum of Understanding between the industry and the state of Hawai‘i that pretty much allows cruise ships to do whatever they please in our waters as long as they keep steaming here.
TUESDAY, July 10 By the way, if all that sounds familiar, it’s because two years ago Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa’s Cruise Ship Task Force released a scathing report that took the whole industry to task. Like most government reports, it made a few headlines, sparked a few discussions, then vanished, never to be heard from again. Anyone want to bet where the HTA study ends up when it’s done? Anthony Pignataro is not a professional, but he can sound like one if need be. MTW
NEWSOFTHEWEIRD CRISIS! The relatively recent creation of almost-obscene wealth has precipitated a crisis in Britain and New York City because the resulting demand for professional butlers far exceeds the supply. Longstanding butler schools in both countries are running at capacity, turning out debonair, refined man-servants at salaries that may exceed $100,000 a year (in the U.S., an extra $20,000 or so for one who speaks “British”), but fortunes are being created at an even faster pace, so that, increasingly, multimillionaires are just having to make do without one, according to recent reports in The Wall Street Journal and The Independent of London.
CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE The Good Hope Hospital in Sutton, England, apparently had an official policy in recent years of reusing sheets from one patient to the next to reduce its laundry bill (estimated at the equivalent of $1 million a year), according to an April report in London’s Daily Mail. The policy coincided with a period in which the hospital’s reported cases of clostridium difficile infections doubled. A hospital official said the policy had been discontinued, though some posters announcing it were on display.

The site’s problems are not easily resolvable, said a UCLA professor who has studied Torres Martinez factions, in that “intertribal relationships” make it “complicated” to change policy.

Devaney had allegedly, indignantly pointed out her status and yelled, “Don’t you know who I am?”
INEXPLICABLE In May, a curious Joe Heckel of Cincinnati and his son took apart the heavy punching bag Joe had bought for their boxing practice and to their surprise found it full of, not sand or plastic pellets, but men’s and women’s underwear, some of it used. According to a May report on WLWT-TV, the manufacturer, Technical Knockout Inc., eventually contacted the Heckels and admitted that it had experienced a “quality” problem and that the people who had thought up the bag-stuffing idea had been fired.

t’s been a skirmish for years. Casualties have been few but very costly. At stake is the propagation of some of Hawai‘i’s endangered sea turtles. Kealia Beach is a favorite nesting spot for the Hawksbill turtle or Honu‘ea, but it can be a daunting place. The beach is just a few yards from North Kihei Road, where cars routinely reach speeds of 60 miles per hour. In the last 20 years, two turtles have died trying to cross the road. Separating these critically endangered creatures from almost certain death is a deteriorating wooden slat and wire fence put in place 10 years ago as a temporary fix while landowner Alexander & Baldwin (A&B) drafted an agreement with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). “Every year they say they are nearing an agreement to put up the [permanent] fence, but it never happens,” Cheryl King, of the Hawai‘i Wildlife Fund (HWF), said. “We are just asking to put
up the [permanent] fence for them.” King added that her organization has a legion of volunteers standing by to do just that. Unfortunately, talks attempting to bring about a cooperative agreement between A&B and FWS have stalled every spring for the last four years. Nesting season runs from May to September. “I am formally requesting that this situation be resolved as soon as possible,” Mayor Charmaine Tavares wrote to Alexander & Baldwin in May. “The Hawaii Wildlife Fund, The Department of Transportation, and the Department of Health, along with many concerned citizens are also willing to work with you on building the permanent fence which will provide necessary protection for the turtles as well as our citizens of Maui County.” In response, A&B passed

the buck. “Given that this area is in the shoreline management area, the State Conservation District, and is adjacent to a National Wildlife Refuge, the most expeditious way to undertake construction of a fence on the property is for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) to undertake the work, not A&B,” Jason Koga of A&B wrote to Tavares.
Koga went on to explain that in order for the work to be done, A&B must first enter into a cooperative agreement with FWS. Of course, this agreement has been drafted. And redrafted. And drafted again. For four years. Both sides cite legal technicalities in the holdup to any construction. “It’s been mostly the wording of the agreement, such as indemnity clauses
and liability issues,” A&B spokesperson Lind Howe said. “I don’t put a time frame on it any more because I am always wrong,” Glynnis Nakai at FWS said. What’s more, the Fish & Wildlife Service has a permanent fence. In fact, for the last three years they’ve been storing it in a shed less than a mile away from the beach. Made of a plastic composite, it promises to be practically indestructible, at least in comparison to the current barrier. In the meantime, volunteers make nearly constant repairs on the ever-deteriorating current fence throughout nesting season. t sunset one recent night, King took a walk along the beach. “It’s just frustrating,” she said. “We build the fence and then come back the next day and it’s been blown over.” Not 10 feet from where she stood, King could see a pile of charred fence posts lay within a makeshift fire pit. According to King, it’s also common for people to drive over the fence to get their vehicles onto the beach. FWS bought the temporary fence back in 1997. Maui Community Correctional Center inmates put it in place. Just keeping it in a semi-functional state has required an almost constant vigilance on the part of many. The Hawai‘i Wildlife Fund formed 11 years ago after the second death of a Hawksbill on North Kihei Road led to a public outcry. Since then it has called for the protection of many of the state’s natural habitats and animals. So far this year there have been no Hawksbills nesting on Kealia Beach, but the season is still young. Hawksbills have put down eggs here in nine of the past 16 seasons, making it the most frequently used spot on Maui. The World Conservation Union considers Hawksbills to be critically endangered. Their shells and meat are very popular throughout the world and are often traded on the black market. It’s estimated that there are just 80 Hawksbills in the entire state. A female

typically nests twice in a season and can lie between one and 180 eggs. During the season, a mere one or two turtles will nest on Maui. If the eggs survive to hatch, the young turtles must make their way to the sea while avoiding an excess of hazards including humans, animals and bad navigation. Typically, just one out of 10,000 eggs will survive to reproduce. A turtle reaches sexual maturity between 20 and 30 years of age. No one knows for sure what the lifespan of these turtles are but King and others believe they’re similar to green turtles, which can live 60 years. s this article was going to press A&B and FWS suddenly announced that they had reached a new agreement that would be finalized this week. Hawai‘i Wildlife Fund officials remain skeptical. “The agreement with A&B to resolve the new fence impasse has been said to be nearly complete each spring for at least the last four years,” the organization wrote in an April 19 letter to FWS. “Why has it been impossible to manage an agreement with A&B to enable resolution of this problem for the last ten years? Who will assume responsibility for another death on the highway, when materials to prevent the death have been stored on FWS property for the last 3 years?” At this point, no one can say. HWF volunteers still plan to walk the beach, as they do every morning as part of their Dawn Patrol, looking for the tracks left by the Hawksbill’s alternating gait and checking on the fence. If they find a nest, they camp out, sleeping in shifts to watch over the eggs and ensure that when the turtles hatch they safely make it to the ocean. After that, all they can do is hope.

Pizza with a Purpose The Flatbread Company wants to feed the world with more than just food DC is a local boy. When it comes to food, he likes things simple. He grew up eating chicken katsu, loco moco, spam musubi and saimin. Lots of saimin. And he drinks Heineken. So when I recommended one night that we try The Flatbread Company in Paia, he hesitated.

“What’s flatbread?” he asked, dubiously. “It’s pizza,” I said. “But better.” “Oh. But it’s in Paia—so is it a hippie joint?” he asked. “There are places in Paia that aren’t hippie joints, you know,” I said. And so we went. I’ve driven by the Flatbread Company on many nights, and have seen the piles of people spilling out the doorway and onto the street. But on this particular occasion, the place was relatively quiet. After walking in, we took a moment to appreciate the restaurant’s open, airy ambience, and the cozy warmth of its impressive primitive wood-fired oven. We took a seat at the bar and were given menus with colorful, charming covers—each uniquely drawn by kids. Appropriately, DC’s cover depicted a surfer in the barrel of big wave (he’s an ex-big wave surfer) while mine displayed a chef making a

pizza (I like to eat pizza). After seeing the words “organic,” “sulfate-free” and “free-range” in descriptions all over the menu, DC shut his menu and said I should do the ordering. I wondered if I should tell him that their dough is made fresh daily from 100 percent organically grown wheat that’s milled into white flour; that the wheat germ is restored; and that they use pure spring water, fresh cake yeast and kosher salt. Ultimately, I decided to let the food speak for itself. Along with customized salads with gourmet ingredients, The Flatbread Company offers their pies in the 12-inch or 16-inch size that you can order with organic wood-fired cauldron tomato sauce or not. Yes, The Flatbread Company is a restaurant with values and a purpose. Of course, they do use organic produce, free-range chicken and nitrate-free pepperoni and sausage. They support local farms and frequently hold benefit nights to share profits with a local charity group. And they hope to educate people about the connection between nature and food. Owners Jay Gould, George Schenk and John Meehan began their “flatbread experience” in

Massachusetts in 1998. And you can see evidence of their nature and food philosophy all over the restaurant. Even on the back of the menu, where Gould writes, “One spring, a long time ago, I asked my eighth grade math teacher what good is your math to me? I cannot count everything in nature with it… The nesting birds do not count the number of sticks to use in their nest. Yet they know what to do in the spring, how to build it and how to take advantage of this abundant season.” Supposedly, Gould’s favorite flatbread is the Punctuated Equilibrium ($11.25, $19). It’s a no-sauce pizza with imported Kalamata olives, fresh organic rosemary, organic red onions, Surfing Goat Dairy goat cheese, fire-roasted sweet red peppers and premium whole milk mozzarella baked on organic bread dough with homemade organic garlic oil and secret blend of organic herbs. But we went for a half-and-half combo. One half was Mopsy’s Kalua Pork, with kiawe-smoked free-range
pork shoulder, homemade organic mango BBQ sauce, local pineapple and Surfing Goat cheese, among other organic things; the other was Pele Pesto—a homemade fresh organic basil, macadamia and garlic pesto pie with Surfing Goat cheese, fresh Roma tomatoes and Kalamata olives, though we also added mushrooms and homemade nitrate-free maple-fennel sausage. And how was it? “Mmm…” DC, the new flatbread connoisseur, said. “Great aroma, a lotta good flavor, well-balanced spices. Good after-taste. It’s delicious. This would be great with a nice, dry red wine.” MTW

Who’s That Girl? Thursday (July 12), 8-10 p.m., LiveWire Café, Lahaina; Friday (July 13), 10 p.m. at Charley’s, Paia; Saturday (July 14), 9 p.m. at Paradice Bluz, Lahaina [HIP-HOP/ACOUSTIC SOUL] Her name is Anuhea. A born-and-bred local girl who maybe doesn’t so much want to rule the world as much as she wants to just rock it. And rock it, she does. Her vocals are disarmingly soulful, her lyrics are wry, her tunes are catchy, and she ain’t sore on the eyes. In case you haven’t noticed, she’s been playing every Tuesday night at Charley’s. But this week’s lineup features the added bonus of her soulful acoustic sounds along with the underground hip-hop heroics of the reclusive but renowned Evolutionaries, from the Bay Area. Cover: $10. [INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC] No, it’s not a new Upcountry law firm. You might remember Ty Burhoe’s (pictured) melodious tabla-playing from last winter’s Krishna Das kirtans—aside from Das, Burhoe collaborates with artists of all genres, like Ustad Zakir Hussain, Art Lande, Curandero, Bela Fleck and Kitaro. And Roshan Jamal Bhartiya comes from a long line of sitar maestros—his father having been a student of Pandit Ravi Shankar—and has been touring and performing for the last 40 years. Together they play Indian classical music, one of the most complex and complete musical systems ever developed. I won’t get into the technicalities of it here, but suffice it to say, that combination of monophonic, just intonation, 12-semitone octaves, melodic ragas and rhythmic talas, is pure bliss to the ears. Oh, tickle my tunic! Tickets: $18. Call the MACC box office at 2427469 or visit online at www.mauiarts.org. Call The Studio Maui at 575-9390 or visit online at www.thestudiomaui.com.

[HAWAIIAN CULTURE] My much younger sister got her first computer at age three, her very own portable DVD player at five, and a cell phone (with more ring tones than I have fingers and toes) at seven. Now, I don’t begrudge her the good stuff, but kids these days have their hands on more cool technology than I ever dreamed of having 20 years ago. That’s why things like this weekend’s Ninth Annual Keiki Hula Festival are refreshing. Shorties honoring their rich cultural heritage by performing the ancient, graceful dances of their ancestors make me smile. Three hula halau will be dancing to exotic Hawaiian chants and Tahitian drums each day of the festival, and there will also be hands-on cultural activities like lei making, quilting and wood carving to further the no-batteries-required celebration. And Jolie the Clown will be there painting faces for free, and that’s just good, clean fun for the whole family. Admission is free. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

What I’m not too sexy for is live coral spawning. This ultra-cool (in a geeky yet hot marine biologist sort of way) sex-in-the-sea event happens every year and is expected to take place this Monday in the ocean and at the Maui Ocean Center. Rice coral polyps release both egg and sperm into these little columns where they fertilize and multiply right before your very eyes. The ocean center will also have dessert, coffee and a nohost bar so you can snack while watching coral procreate. I always thought that food and porn complemented each other. Tickets: $24.96. [FILM] Ahhh… the Maui Film Festival’s Candlelight Café and Cinema is back and ready for action. Thank goodness! My Wednesdays were becoming so… pedestrian! So they took a wee break after the Wailea Festival happenings, but now it’s on (“like Donkey Kong,” as my ‘80s pals used to say). This week’s film: The Hoax, starring Richard Gere, Alfred Molina, Hope Davis, Stanley Tucci and Julie Delpy. It’s about Clifford Irving, a charismatic character who pulls a fast one on… well, the world… when he writes an unauthorized biography (and saying it’s authorized) of the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes—in essence, lying in print for the rewards of fame and fortune. Kind of unlikely, eh? Hey, that’s entertainment. Rated R. 115 min. Tickets: $10. Visit www.mauifilmfestival.com.

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Five’s a Charm Potter Franchise finds intelligence Just as Daniel Radcliffe has matured as an actor, the fifth Harry Potter installment has graduated in scope toward a movie capable of entertaining adults and children alike. After so much critical hullabaloo about “darkening up” the films, British director David Yates (The Girl In The Café) takes the reins of J.K. Rowling’s politically pertinent storyline rendered by screenwriter Michael Goldenberg (Contact) that errs on the side of drama over comedy.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
★★★★★ Rated PG-13/139 min.
Harry’s days of coming-of-age are officially over when he becomes the ambivalent leader of a revolution at Hogwarts after an opportunist Professor Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton—Vera Drake) is appointed to usurp power. Yates tosses in dashes of snappy thematic touches from films like 1984, Brazil and even The Exorcist to create a subtext-rich visual palate for a narrative that compartmentalizes sentimentality into a
handheld crystal ball. The action kicks off with a gothic tone as caliginous storm clouds interrupt a playground confrontation between Harry and his ridiculing cousin Dudley. The inclement weather forebodes the arrival of two Dementors (death angels, if you will) that chase Harry and Dudley into a tunnel where they commence sucking the life force from the two boys. Harry skillfully dispatches the vile creatures with his trusty wand, but soon pays a toll when a talking envelope arrives from the Ministry of Magic announcing his expulsion from Hogwarts’ school for practicing magic in the presence of a Muggle. Alastor Moody (Brendan Gleeson) arrives to spirit Harry away by broom to the dingy secret headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix where Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) blesses his Godson’s intention to continue fighting Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) with a knowing wink. But first, Harry must endure and defeat an inquisition within the blackened corridors of the Ministry of Magic where Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore defends Harry’s disbelieved story about Voldemort’s recent return. Harry doesn’t realize that his personal persecution is about to extend to his classmates under the fake smile of Hogwarts’ new professor of the Dark Arts, Ms. Umbridge. In a running gag consistent with the evaporation of America’s articles of its constitution, Ms. Umbridge begins posting an increasing list of limitations on the students while firing trusted staff members such as the daffy Sybil Trelawney (Emma Thompson).
I had a teacher like that once
After replacing the student’s practical textbook on magic with an elementary manual, Ms. Umbridge shows off her torturing talents by privately making Harry write “I must no tell lies” with blood ink that comes from the flesh of his left hand. The openly political coup that Imelda Staunton’s divisive character commits, establishes the Ministry’s control of the school by stealing liberty right out from under the nose of its well-intentioned staff, including Dumbledore. It’s in this turn of events that Harry convenes freedom-fighting magic classes for his appropriately named “Dumbledore’s Army.” Ultimately the magic lessons primarily serve to prepare Harry for an inevitable battle against Voldemort and his freaky assistants Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs) and Bellatrix
Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter). You get the sense that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the culmination of efforts from a group of highly talented and rapidly aging actors who have more at stake this time around. Every performance from such notables as Michael Gambon, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman and from the ever-surprising Imelda Staunton, carries an added dimension of personal significance. With Yates already in pre-production on the next Potter movie (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) it seems that the franchise may finally have arrived at its balance. Although marred by some inept editing by Mark Day, The Order of the Phoenix is the first of the series to resound as a multifaceted narrative that understands its own intentions. It is intelligent. Pale by Day, Superhero by Night Jim Gaffigan: actor, comedian, writer, animated crimefighter On Maui, we see our fair share of pale. It appears in aloha shirts, plastic lei and various shades of sunburn across the isle. But Jim Gaffigan has taken his whiteness to greater heights.
couple times, Kauai for my honeymoon, the Big Island for a corporate event. Anything as an excuse to come to Hawai‘i. When we stayed on the Big Island, there was all this stuff we don’t have in New York City—my daughter went swimming with sea turtles.

I like that you talk about food a lot in your stand-up routines. You’re even photographed eating on the back of your CD, Beyond the Pale. Are you a foodie?
Friday (July 13), 8 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC. Tickets: $35. Call 242-7469.
In addition to his popular standup routine, Beyond the Pale—now on CD and DVD—Gaffigan is the co-creator and star (along with Conan O’Brien) of Pale Force, a darkly comic and sometimes just gross animated series about two pigmentless superheroes. It appears regularly on the Late Night with Conan O’Brien show. This year Pale Force was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Broadband Program. Yeah, I didn’t know that was a category either. But it totally should have won. Anyway, Gaffigan talked to me by phone a couple weeks ago, from his home in New York City:
Totally. I’m a big fan of food. And it seems everyone eats it. That’s kind of how that special played out. Obviously I have new material, but I keep going back to food because everyone seems to enjoy it. How did you join forces with Conan O’Brien? It was really kind of… it was my brother-in-law’s idea. We would go and do Conan every couple months. He would come and watch Conan and I talk about how pale we were. He came up with the idea of superheroes who fight crime with paleness. We kind of brought it up—animation is expensive, but they took a risk on it, and it gained momentum. Which Pale Force episode are you proudest of?

Christmas and Law & Order: Pale Force There’s a bunch more, because legally I can’t put all of them on the website. We’re getting ready to do another season of them. It’s really fun. I do them with my brother-in-law and my other brotherin-law does music—my wife has a hand in it all. We literally just show up and they play them. They’re not all up in our grill or anything. It’s a fine balance. We don’t want to be all proud—it has to remain self-effacing, funny, we’re making fun of Conan without being too disrespectful. What is your personal philosophy of what is funny?
industry, there’s ways to do something and get paid. Because there’s so many people that want to do something like that. I’ve been around a while. I kept my day job around so that I could stick to what I consider a quality thing. I didn’t want the quick fix. When I started standup there were plenty of guys—my friends—that did horrible rooms in Jersey to make money. You become a product of your environment, working for a bunch of knuckleheads... I didn’t get caught up. It’s really a patience kind of thing. You’ve done a lot of acting and your roles are quite varied. What would you like to do next with that?
Making the jump from finance to comedy and acting must have been scary at times. What do you think is the secret to your success?
The acting thing is something that I really have fun doing. It’s such a separate thing from stand up. Acting is such an insane pursuit—trying to get a job—you might as well try to get into Oxford. But it’s so fun and fulfilling. Stand up is fun ‘cause it’s so immediate. I guess I have a split creative personality. I really like the idea of “serving the scene” in acting. I probably should live in L.A. I would love to do indie movies. I’m not dying to be famous. I’m dying to have creative fulfillment. I get fulfillment from doing Sierra Mist commercials! But the perception is, as an actor, you’re not supposed to do those. I think as an actor you have to show people what you can do.
I grew up in a family where success was wearing a coat and tie. I was very cautious about taking steps. In the entertainment

Creativity is connecting two unrelated ideas. I’m an observational guy. If there’s a room of 100 people, they’ll enjoy the material—you know, I feel like the human desires we all respond to are lust and hatred. Somebody can sit there and bash [George W.] Bush and that might get people on board, and some people will be like, “Somebody’s bashing the president!” And everyone might be sick of Paris Hilton. So I’m talking about Hot Pockets and pie.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) This weekend could be your most important one this year, or it could pass entirely unremarked. It will be precisely what you make of it, like any other weekend, but the New Moon in Cancer is a unique opportunity to inaugurate new chapters or finally put into action carefully-considered decisions. Get ready. This is your kick in the ass. How long were you planning to wait before you got your shit together, after all? Step up and do it now. Or wait another year (and probably three more, besides). It’s up to you.
BIO-BEETLE.com 808-873-6121
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Choose your battles more carefully. Sometimes, you get carried away, simply because you know you’re right. This, however, isn’t about right or wrong. It’s not worth arguing about for so many reasons: Perhaps the person you’re complaining to doesn’t actually have the power to change anything, or it might simply be too complicated. Your head’s already dented enough, from slamming into brick walls. Spare yourself further injury by carefully assessing the obstacles before you. Some are squishy and malleable, and some are as immovable and solid as mountains. Learn to recognize which is which, already, would you?
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Powered By BIODIESEL
I’m a realist, especially about love affairs. I’m both incredibly romantic and phenomenally cynical. I advised a friend of mine, who’s dating a beautiful 18-year-old French model, to enjoy every minute of it, precisely because it won’t last forever. He was adamant in his naïve faith that they’d die together, of old age, in a hundred years. I think it’s better to recognize the ephemeral nature of all things—especially things like love affairs with teen beauties—so as to better enjoy them, rather than deny that they’ll ever change or go away, and possibly take them for granted until they do. Don’t you?
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? EMAIL: letters@mauitime.com
Telling someone you’re in love with them will change everything between you two, forever—sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Librans are notoriously susceptible to illusions regarding this very subject, both in how they imagine people might react to such a declaration, and how things could be afterwards in either case. I don’t mean to make mountains out of molehills. Maybe this ought to be a molehill. Unfortunately, it’s simply not. It’s a mountain. Make sure you’re ready for such a radical change in your internal landscape before you invite Mount Everest in to stay.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) In all my travels, I’ve learned to cherish being lost the most. Even when it’s stressful. Because I’ve found, from experience, that these are the moments that will become stories and treasured memories later, and lead to discoveries I never would have made otherwise, both in life and about myself. This applies to emotional journeys as well as physical ones. Remember this the next time you’re lost and late: It’s actually the best thing that could have happened to you, far cooler than just arriving at your destination, uneventfully and on time.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You’ve got an opinion about everything. Luckily, you’re also usually quite flexible and open-minded. You’ll admit you’re wrong, if someone makes a good case for the opposing viewpoint. You do, however, have a couple blind spots, born out of social programming you absorbed when you were just a little kid, mostly about relationships. In those cases, it hardly matters how well someone presents another viewpoint; you just refuse to see it. This time, though, an 18-wheeler looms in that blind spot. Either you acknowledge it and at least make some effort to accommodate it, or it’s going to send you crashing into a tree, and you’ll be in emotional traction for a year. Adjust your mirrors. It’s easier to fix a dented dream than recover from a full-on crash-and-burn.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Some people are content to just toss some food into the microwave, then eat it when it’s hot. Others, though, want to know how it got hot, how the thing works. They take apart televisions, computers, cars and—emotionally, at least—people. They want to know what makes you and everything else tick. I suggest you borrow a bit of their inquisitiveness this week, because some fascinating stuff lurks just beneath the surface of things. It would explain a lot about why your life is the way it is, and why your relationships are the way they are. Don’t dismantle anything you can’t put back together, but at least open the lid and peep inside.
NOW IN CONVENIENT PODCAST FORM! Every Thursday Publisher Tommy Russo, Editor Anthony Pignataro and Associate Editor Samantha Campos discuss the thinking and decisions that went into the week's issue. It's called
‘Beyond the Ink’
and it's another way we're bringing you Maui's most interesting and informative coverage.
Check it out at www.mauitime.com
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Of course I’m addicted to the Internet. It’s the closest thing to the sum total of human knowledge that has ever existed, and I love having all that information no more than a Google search away. It has made my brain a bit lazy, in some ways, though. I’ve never been much of a retainer of trivia, but recalling random facts is mostly beyond me now. Instead, I remember how to find that information; which websites to begin with, and how to extract that particular nugget from the vastness that is the Web. I’ve accepted my cyborg-hood. When will you acknowledge, admit to, and own the crutches you’re using—both good and bad—to make you more than you are?
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Expose yourself to stuff. The city mouse is more wily and resourceful than the country mouse not because he’s gifted with superior genetics, but simply because he’s encountered a greater variety of challenging situations that have forced him to become more than he was. Leading a sheltered little country mouse life may appeal to you sensitive Pisceans, but it’s poor preparation for the future. Life intrudes, even in the country. Wouldn’t you rather be exposed to its dangers on your own terms, by your own choice? It’s certainly better than waiting until they simply barge in, unannounced, and force you to deal.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Start hollering and waving your arms, Aries. Jump up and down. Make sure everyone knows where you are. People are looking for you, but you’ve maintained such a low profile lately that they can’t find you. Emerge from your little bubble of familiar people and situations. I’m glad you’ve outgrown your need to always stand out from the crowd, but I hope you haven’t forgotten how. Make a spectacle of yourself this week, so that those who need someone like you in their lives can figure that out, and ask you to join them.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I’d bet that far fewer than 1 in 12 early adopters of the iPhone were Taureans. You guys are generally more cautious about your acquisitions, and rather than waiting in line to be the first person you know to have the nifty gadget, most of you would prefer to wait to see how much of an issue fingerprints are, or how else the thing might fail to live up to its hype, before you shell out your own hard-earned cash for it. Let other people be the guinea pigs, you figure. Fine. Sometimes, though, you have no choice but to try something out for yourself. The iPhone’s not one of them, but the relationship before you is. You can’t accept others’ reviews, this time. You have to write your own hype, then live up to it.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) The reason alternative medicine is so popular these days is only partially because it’s surprisingly helpful. It’s also more fun than waiting for your HMO to screw you, and it’s more affordable. The mainstream health care industry is totally screwed up. There are ways and there are ways, whether you’re trying to heal your body or your heart (or someone else’s body or heart). Don’t just stick to the most obvious solution (especially since it can’t or won’t work). Experiment with alternatives. Good ones, preferably. They’re out there. All you have to do is look.

Grind This All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another. –Anatole France (1844-1924), novelist Like the great ‘80s hair band Europe used to say, “It’s the final countdown.” Minus the synthesized trumpets, those are the words ringing in my head everywhere I go now, which is sort of giving all my familiar haunts a decidedly more conclusive glow. Plus, I’ve come to realize there’s much to be done before I leave Maui. Luckily, I had some time to think about all of this last Sunday as I put in a day shift at my pals’ coffee shop on the Westside… 8:43 a.m. Danny Bonaduce walks in, pausing at the register. He’s short, tan and has obviously been working out. “Give me something sweet with coffee in it,” he says with a smile. I fix him a cold-pressed espresso toddy, blended with lots of caramel and cream. It’s funny how we view celebrities on the island; no wonder they like to come here. We ignore them. Aunty Jan from the superette, Cousin Larry from the electric company or Uncle Rob from the dive shop will get considerably more attention from other locals than Paris Hilton would. Gosh, there are so many friends I need to hang out with before I go. And the packing, the shipping, the Matson… oh, crap. 9:55 a.m. An older man steps up to the counter and reads aloud the sign on the tip jar: “Tipping is not just for cows.” He laughingly suggests I put “Tipping is for sexy people” instead, like they do with great success back home in Indiana. I make my Sunday morning call to Mom. She tells me about her wealthy friends from California who are on island right now buying another home. I check my email and get an invite to attend an Investment Club. Another couple comes in from golfing to print their boarding passes. I wonder if I’m gonna have enough money saved to make this big move to the city, and if somebody—somebody really good—is going to hire me. And pay me a ton of dough. Saving money has always been rather difficult. Although I’ve been lucky to have a full-time writer gig, it isn’t the highest paying job. So I’ve taken on some freelance work, which has been nice. But recently I went to a financial advisor to see if I could ever hope to end the endless work-to-live rut. I told him my plans. He listened politely to my concerns and balked slightly at my paltry suggested contributions to an as-yet-nonexistent IRA. He advised me instead to hang out with the hedge-funders in the city, and gave me a list of their favorite bars and restaurants. 10:27 a.m. A nine-year-old kid sits down at the organ and plays an uptempo, two-chord electrobeat that is way more rockin’ than any modern Euro-neu-wave-acid jazz-house band I’ve heard in awhile. After making something like a kagillion shave ice, I try eating my very first—blue raspberry, pink bubblegum and wild cherry, with vanilla bean ice cream on the bottom. Wow, that’s good stuff. Take five for brain freeze…

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
1:14 p.m. I check my horoscope: “You have the uncanny ability now to move slowly and steadily in the direction of your future. You’ve established your goals and created the strategy that will get you there. This isn’t about a quick dash for the finish line. Be patient and execute your plan with an eye to your future.” A lot of you have been asking about my plans—where I’m moving, what I’ll be doing, and can we meet for coffee before I go. For now, I will just answer your first query. I’m planning to move back to the mainland, find a job within the publishing realm, and spread my writerly wings a bit. And no, I don’t have a job lined up yet. (I’M GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO AND YES YOU CAN BUY ME COFFEE!) I’ve been here 10 years and I love Maui. But I am feeling the need for a change, and I’m hoping to take my career to some next level—whatever that may be. It’s a scary step to take, considering the niche I seem to have created for myself here with MTW, and the family of friends I’m lucky to have had over the years. But if I don’t try now, I’ll never know. I hate to keep making references to ‘80s songs but—okay, no I don’t. The ‘80s rock! Viva la ‘80s! Anyway, it’s like the intro to that fantastic Butthole Surfers song “Sweat Loaf.” It goes like this: “Daddy?” “Yes, son.” “What does regret mean?” “Well, son, the funny thing about regret is that it’s better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven’t done… “And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, will you be sure and tell her— SATAN SATAN SATAN!!!” 2:51 p.m. I go online and buy my plane ticket. August 1. Exactly 10 years from the date I moved here. Crazy. The stereo is playing “I’ll Be Seeing You.” One more to go. Cue that synthesized trumpet… Samantha Campos would like to thank Hawaiian Village Coffee for her latest drug of choice and coffee grind beauty regimen. MTW
