FERRY SUSPICIOUS Why do I sense the State Blunder category (Best of Maui 2009 winner: the Hawaii Superferry) was a victim of ballot stuffing that Maui Time didn’t pick-up on? Or refuses to even hint at? Guess there is a lot of bias in a supposedly “independent” newspaper.

There should be some integrity between the awards you give out and the advertising you receive from the honorees - Mama’s Fish House was named ‘Best Seafood’ in Best of Maui 2009, and their ad states they won Best Restaurant & Best Dinner. Do they think it’s really necessary to lie to get attention? Oh, that’s right, they have everyone believe they are listing the fisherman’s name and where the fish was caught when that really isn’t always the truth. Now they find it necessary to disrespect the real winners of those categories, Lahaina Grill and Moana Bakery & Cafe, respectively, and Mama’s didn’t even get Runner-up, but still chose to steal the awards and accolades through their advertising! Obviously they have trouble telling the truth. I’ll remember that for next year when I vote for Mama’s to win ‘Best of Liars’. Keep up the good smirk... Peter Rehfuss, Wailuku

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD WALK ALL OVER HIM A 48-year-old immigrant from Malta regularly hangs out in various New York City bars, but always on the floor, so that he can enjoy his particular passion of being stepped on. “Georgio T.” told The New York Times in June that he has delighted in being stepped on since he was a kid. While one playmate “wanted to be the doctor, (another) wanted to be the carpenter...I would want to be the carpet.” Nowadays, he carries a custom-made rug he can affix to his back (and a sign, Step on Carpet) and may lie face-down for several hours if the bar is busy. He is also a regular at “high foot-traffic” fetish parties, where dozens of stompers (especially women in stilettos) can satisfy their own urges while gratifying Georgio.

THUG LIFE Steven Gilmore Jr., 21, was arrested in Gainesville, Fla., after an aborted convenience store robbery in which he shot a clerk with a BB gun. Police said Gilmore confessed to the crime, explaining that he is an aspiring rap singer and felt he needed to commit a violent crime to gain “street cred.”

THIS JUST IN: TEEN PREGNANCY IS GOOD! Addressing a conference in Hobart, Australia, in May, professor Julie Quinlivan, dean of the University of Notre Dame Australia’s medical school, said that for disadvantaged teenage girls, becoming pregnant is a good thing, teaching a sense of responsibility that may otherwise not

develop. Such teen mothers were more likely to stop smoking, stay in school and find jobs.

BURNING AT BOTH ENDS Even though life and health insurance companies now routinely penalize smokers with higher premiums (or by refusing their business), the companies themselves own tobacco company stock worth at least $4.4 billion, according to a recent New England Journal of Medicine report. Centers for Disease Control estimates that more than 400,000 Americans die prematurely each year due in part to smoking (burdening life insurance companies but perhaps sparing health insurers from having to pay out over longer lifetimes).

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) In April, police in Fayetteville, N.C., were seeking a pregnant woman who walked into a Carter Bank & Trust branch with a handgun and demanded cash. As a clerk was taking money out to give to her, she received a call on her cell phone, and the conversation became so intense that she ignored the money and walked out of the bank empty-handed, still talking. (2) Alfonso Rizzuto, 47, who was on the run from forgery charges in Scranton, Pa., was arrested in nearby Kingston when he wandered into a post office and an employee noticed that Rizzuto bore a great resemblance to the photo on the Wanted poster of “Alfonso Rizzuto” tacked to the wall. (3) Daniel Doster Jr., 42, was arrested in Yorktown, Ind., in March for masturbating while standing beside his mailbox (which he told police he was doing to show his neighbors “who was boss”). MTW

Remarkable Aloha

A troubling sign

The teachings and legacy of Uncle Ed Lindsey “

ou’ve got to look at the whole enchilada,” Uncle Ed Lindsey would say, pausing to let the assembled group absorb his message. In the years we served on the Maui Tomorrow Foundation board together, I grew to appreciate his commonsense approach. He offered his opinion with clarity and the strength of purpose of a steersman dipping his oar into the water to guide his outrigger through turbulent swells. A lifelong educator, Lahaina native Edwin Robert Naleilehua Lindsey, Jr. taught school for twenty-five years in Hana and Wailuku. But in his “retirement” he undertook a number of cultural restoration projects that will long define a legacy steeped in Hawaiian values. Indeed, Lindsey was an ambassador of aloha in the fullest meaning of the word. On a warm, sunny Friday afternoon an overflow crowd filled Waiola Church in Lahaina; an elegant historic structure that well suits the man. Hundreds, young and old, gathered in aloha-wear for the celebration of a life well lived. In contrast to the choked up sadness of some memorial services, a sense of peace wafted through the plumeria-scented air. Uncle Ed’s physical body had succumbed to cancer, but not before he passed his gifts to countless students, family, and friends. Lindsey’s sister Roselle Bailey offered an oli (chant), lamenting, “Auwe, auwe!” The wailing sadness at his passing ended in joyful prayer, as Bailey expained, “His spirit has joined the ancestors at Pu`u Kukui, and the rainbow has embraced him.” Bailey then spoke of her brother’s tireless endeavors. “He established a really wonderful foundation of his work. The burden is now on us,” she said.

Y

ecognizing the inseparable link between Hawaiian culture and the environment, Lindsey helped create organizations designed to malama (take care of) the land and the sea. In 2002, Lindsey founded Maui Cultural Lands, Inc. with the aim of restoring cultural ruins in West Maui’s Honokowai Valley and educating the public about the ‘aina. For years he led groups there every Saturday to remove invasive plants and uncover long-forgotten foundations and rock walls of taro lo`i.

LC Watch Often, we seek out fodder for this column by attending meetings, chatting with LC officials, collecting tips from venue owners, etc. But occasionally, column fodder falls conveniently—and unexpectedly—into our lap. Take the evening of Wednesday, July 1. Maui Time reporter, calendar editor and all around scenemaker Kate Bradshaw was enjoying some sustenance and entertainment at Flatbread in Paia when three LC agents entered the establishment.

Uncle Ed Lindsey, cultural and environmental educator.

“People who help the land and the culture, who give unselfishly for the sake of the land, they are the heroes, the real warriors.” - Uncle Ed Lindsey Maui Cultural Lands has also established ongoing projects in Ukumehame as well as the lands near the Kaheawa Pastures wind farm. MCL’s Web site quotes Lindsey in its strategic plan: “People who help the land and the culture, who give unselfishly for the sake of the land, they are the heroes, the real warriors.” These are words that befit the man himself. hen the Maui County Council honored Lindsey with a resolution last May, well-wishers packed the council chambers in appreciation. Among them were representatives from Na Kapuna O Maui, Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club, Kaanapali 2020, and Maui Tomorrow.

W

Uncle Ed also was instrumental in Kilakila O Haleakala, a group that assesses the cultural significance of Maui’s landmark volcanic mountain in light of the proposed solar telescope. He was a cofounder and president of the `Ohana Coalition, a registered Political Action Committee begun in 2002 with the intent of electing candidates on the basis of shared values rather than backgrounds or political parties. He hoped the group would help voters choose candidates who would act in the public’s interest rather than that of big business. In 2007 he helped launch the Maui Nui Marine Resources Council. The young organization addresses fishing licenses, bag limits, cultural fishing rights, aquarium collecting, and other key issues impacting our near shore waters. Like so many of the organizations he helped create, the MNMRC grew out of earlier protection efforts. I recall Uncle Ed’s force-

They headed, as one would expect, to the bar and stuck around for what seemed like 20 minutes; Kate says she couldn’t hear exactly what was being said, but it was clear they weren’t interested in the pizza. Given the duration of the agents’ visit, Kate says, it seemed like a serious violation had taken place and that a bust of some sort was about to occur. Tension was in the air. When the agents finally left, Kate asked a member of the staff what all the fuss was about. A minor decoy sting, perhaps? Over-serving? An unregistered underage employee? Nope. Turns out the bar’s “You must be 21 or over…” sign wasn’t being displayed prominently enough. Not that they didn’t have the sign, mind you, just that it needed to be put in a different, more visible spot.

So, to recap: it took three guys nearly a halfhour to say, “Hey, move that sign.” Might be time for a little efficiency training, among other things. - Jacob Shafer To share or save this article, type: mt.smub.it/lc1 into your smartphone or pc

ROBREPORT ALOHAA: continued from page 9 ful testimony during DLNR meeting on a proposed partial ban on gill net fishing, a debate that remained volatile for years. Uncle Ed stood in the Maui Waena Intermediate School cafeteria and spoke sternly, contradicting those who said lay gill nets were a cultural right. “If we’re talking Hawaiian culture, let’s talk about it,” he said. “No more fish, no more Hawaiian culture.” indsey was given the Malama I Ke Kai Kupuna award at Last April’s “More Fish in the Sea: E Ola Kai, E Ola Kakou” event, held at Maui Community College. With cancer spreading painfully into his bones,

luminaries Sheldon Brown, George Kahumoku, Jr., and Joe Cano. “In his last days,” said Kaho`ohalahala, “Ed talked about peace—world peace— something I never heard him talk about

before. ‘If the world would understand and live in aloha,’ he said, ‘there would be world peace.’” knew Uncle Ed Lindsey only for the last twelve years of his life, and find myself gravitating to two words describing my impressions of him: dignity and integrity. His sense of humor was sharp, and he often brought irony into a discussion to bring home a point. “Golf courses and archaeological sites don’t mix,” Lindsey told a large audience at the South Maui Forum in early 2007, gathered to hear about possible impacts from the proposed Wailea 670 and Makena projects. Asked what areas in South Maui merited preservation, he answered, “I cry for what’s happening to the Hawaiian people here. It’s a crime.” He bluntly shared his opinion of the developer’s choice of adopting the name Honua`ula for their Wailea project. “It’s window-dressing,” he said. “You need to be worthy of that name. You had better put Hawaiian spirit and values in there before you do anything.”

I

he chicken-skin moment of the memorial service came when Puanani, his wife of forty-five years, shared a song she had written earlier that day. Playing uke and singing in English, she sang with deep love cascading from her heart. Emotion washed over those gathered, and many reached for tissues. As she finished she leaned to the microphone before stepping away and said, “For my love..” The following morning, as crowds assembled for the annual Makawao Rodeo Parade, I saw many of the faces from the prior day. I recalled 11 years earlier when I donned a chartreuse t-shirt that read, “Ed Lindsey-Mayor 1998.” The parade was a familiar place for political candidates, and Uncle Ed was surely someone I felt motivated to support. His candidacy never it made it past the primary election, though the issues and values he raised elevated election-year discussions. Little would I have expected that his example of boldly jumping into the political fray would be a path I myself would follow in years to come. Two years later, in 2000, I called Uncle Ed on short notice and asked him to provide a blessing at my wedding to my sweetheart, Heather. Obliging our request, Uncle Ed offered an invocation with great dignity and reverence, calling in the ancestors and spirits to come and celebrate our blessed union. Nine years later, we remain as grateful as we did on our wedding day. Ed Lindsey was a friend and hero to many, and a spirited warrior for the `aina. Though we will miss him in our daily musings, his journeys and work are now complete, and he is now among the ancestors we may call to bless our endeavors. As his sister Roselle said, now it’s up to us. —MTW

MAUICOUNTY

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, JULY 8 Like most writers, I glean a small (alright, medium-sized) slice of satisfaction from finding misused words and phrases in other publications. Being the editor of a newspaper that, like all newspapers, allows errors to slip through, this opens me up to the very real prospect of tasting my own medicine on a semi-weekly basis. Which brings me to a note from reader Jim Lytle of Lahaina that landed recently in my inbox. Jim had clipped a line from a Coconut Wireless entry, one in which I took a swipe at Maui News publisher Joe Bradley for getting cozy with Gov. Lingle at a meeting of the Maui Chamber of Commerce. Here’s what I wrote: “Accompanying the piece was a nice photo of Joe and Linda sharing a hug by the podium. Now isn’t that cozy.” Can you spot my mistake? Don’t feel bad if you can’t—according to Jim, and he may be right, it’s “the most erroneously used word in todays [sic] TV & print media.” The word? “Podium.” The actual definition of podium is “a small platform for the conductor of an orchestra, for a public speaker, etc.” The stand that might be placed on a podium to hold notes for the conductor, public speaker, etc. is called a “lectern.” So Jim: I stand corrected, and hereby join you in your quest to correct this disturbingly entrenched linguistic error. THURSDAY, JULY 9 Here’s one of those weird coincidences that test my usually staunch disbelief in fate: within minutes of landing in Boise, Idaho, where I will attend a wedding in two days, I saw a

BY JACOB SHAFER JACOB@MAUITIME.COM

car with a “Kihei” decal on its back window. I was tempted to flag down the driver, but jet lag-induced laziness and the arrival of an intersection that parted our paths prevented further investigation. FRIDAY, JULY 10 OK, this is getting weird: today on the street I overheard two guys discussing the Superferry. Guess there’s no escaping that issue. SATURDAY, JULY 11 No odd Hawaii omens today, just a champagne headache and an early plane to catch. SUNDAY, JULY 12 Read in today’s Maui News that former Sen. Henry Takitani died earlier this week at age 85. In the story, Takitani is remembered by family and colleagues as a champion of higher education, who wanted to bolster and expand the state’s colleges and universities so young people who wanted to earn advanced degrees didn’t have to defect to the Mainland. There’s obviously a lot of work left to do on that front, but it’s a fine legacy… In other news: According to an AP story, Hawaii’s tourist draw of the future may not be luaus, sunsets or snorkeling but, rather, outer space. The idea, which actually sounds like it’s getting serious consideration, is to launch wannabe Buzz Aldrins from one island up into the gravityfree zone and bring them down on another island. The service, the piece claims, could be ready to roll “within a decade.” The price tag? A mere $200,000. That might seem like an exorbitant sum given current and foreseeable economic realities. But Jim Crisafulli, Hawaii’s director of aerospace development, thinks people “wouldn’t bat an eye at spending that amount of money.” Why is that, Jim? “It would be a soul-energizing experience.” Huh. MONDAY, JULY 13 According to multiple reports, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the residency challenge against Councilman Sol Kaho’ohalahala. It’s important to note, and is noted in today’s Maui News, that the challenge only calls into question Kaho’ohalahala’s right to vote as a resident of Lanai; a challenge to his right to run for (and hold) the Lanai seat would have had to be filed before the election. That means, if the challenge is successful, we could have a public official who’s not allowed to vote in the place he serves. In the world of politics, stranger things have happened… In other news: Hey, it looks like there might be more takers for that nine-times-my-annualsalary island-hopping space jaunt than I thought. According to a Pacific Business News report, Hawaii has the highest concentration of millionaires in the country. The figures, which come from New Yorkbased Phoenix Marketing International, show that 6.4 percent of Hawaii households

The easy way to find out if mai-tais taste better in space. pull down seven figures (or more). Whether that’s good news depends, I suppose, on which group you’re in: the 6.4 or the 93.6. TUESDAY, JULY 14 What do Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona and NASA climate scientist James Hansen have in common? Both oppose a “cap and trade” system to deal with global climate change. Of course, their reasoning isn’t exactly the same. According to a June 29 New Yorker article titled “The Catastrophist” (worth a read if you like getting day-ruiningly depressed), Hansen considers cap and trade (which sets a limit on CO2 emissions but lets big polluters purchase exemptions) “a sham” that doesn’t come close to addressing the problem. Aiona, on the other hand, thinks cap and trade would be akin to “a hidden energy tax,” according to an AP report. That means he’d really hate Hansen’s idea—a full-on, out-in-the-open carbon tax. To be fair, Aiona doesn’t deny global climate change is real. (Thankfully, almost nobody is doing that anymore.) But like pretty much every policymaker on both sides of the aisle, he’s

unwilling to acknowledge the severity of the problem, and thus to embrace the drastic measures necessary to mitigate its effects… In other, far less serious news: Today is the Major League Baseball AllStar game; one of the participants will be Maui’s Shane Victorino. Kudos to Shane, who got in at the last minute via an online poll that allowed fans to vote as many times as they wanted for one of five finalists. This is, however, where I must make a confession: I had my heart set on (and cast multiple votes for) Pablo Sandoval, the rotund, slugging third baseman for my beloved San Francisco Giants. Actually, I think both Victorino and Sandoval deserve to be on the team. I’m sure there’s some relief pitcher they could have kicked to the curb that no one would have missed. aui has no shortage of stories. The island’s rich history, colorful characters and stunning natural features are a veritable goldmine for writers and artists. But, especially in the world of fiction, the Valley Isle is mostly unexplored territory. Wayne Moniz wants to change that. A born-and-raised Mauian, award-winning playwright and the 1995 Maui Teacher of the Year, Moniz recently published a collection of short stories titled Under Maui Skies. Each of the seven stories is set in a different historical period and is written in the style of a different classic genre. An adventure story is centered on the last eruption of Haleakala in 1690; a Wild West cowboy tale is placed Upcountry in the early 1900s Paniolo days; a film noir-esque detective yarn unfolds in the seedy underbelly of 1930s Wailuku. And so on. Through his well-researched, accessible stories, Moniz reveals an innate understanding and unyielding love of Maui. Not the tiki torch, glossy tourism brochure version that’s packaged and sold to visitors, but the real Maui, the one shrouded in myth and steeped in a history both beautiful and tragic. We sat down with Moniz ahead of a Mainland book tour to discuss the island’s past, present and future, the art of the short story and his hopes for the next generation of Maui writers.

M

Talk about the genesis of this book, how it took shape. I usually do plays, which takes a lot of time and effort—I average at least a year on a play. I had some minor surgery and was confined to bed for a little while, so I decided to try some short stories. There are always ideas, but they’re not necessarily going to become a play. And really, I try to pitch my plays, [but] not as many people want to buy plays in book form. I figured seven stories would be kind of a magic number, and I wanted to try out different genres. The idea was to find out what was my strength; what’s my forte if I want to do a novel? Would it be a love story, ghost story, science fiction? Once I picked the genres, the next question was, of course, what am I going to write about? The way I’ve always approached things is to simply be curious, see where my nose leads me, then do the research.

I’d imagine the research on these stories was extensive, despite their length. Oh yes. I wouldn’t say it was as much [research] as I do for a play, but it took a lot to get it historically accurate. My brand of writing is historical fiction, if you want to categorize it.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

It’s a good time to be writing historical fiction, isn’t it? Yes, it’s gotten very popular. You had the [John] Adams book, which really is dramatic fiction—we don’t know what those guys said exactly. There was no Maui Time Weekly to take notes or record.

Some authors have said that short stories can be more difficult to write than novels, because you have to cram background and characters and a compelling arc in much less space. Was that your experience? Yes, in some ways. Every sentence becomes so important. Arnie [Kotler], the publisher, and I would argue over a word. One review criticized how I placed an adverb in a sentence, and we had actually debated that word. Another criticism said [the detective story] had a bit of a muddled, hurried ending, which may be true. Try to write a mystery in 1,700 words.

That story seemed like it was begging to be longer. I actually turned it into a screenplay. It was wonderful because I could spread my wings and take these characters to new places and go into more detail.

“Whether it was intended or not, there’s a diversity that comes out in each story—that idea of the melting pot, the blending.”

You mention the screenplay in your notes at the end of the book. Is it still in ‘pre production’ to use the showbiz parlance? [Laughs] It’s going around in the Carolinas right now; they have a pretty good film commission. But no, nothing is imminent. My background is actually in film school—I went to UCLA. I got into plays instead of films because it’s easier and less expensive to get them produced.

In the notes for “The Cave of Whispering Spirits,” the story about the last eruption of Haleakala, you write that “insensitivity blinded [the characters] from the requests of the Fire Goddess.” Do you see parallels to some of the current debates about development on Haleakala and the island in general?

I think we see common metaphors. Most of the Pele stories have to do with people being ignorant or insensitive, unaware that the gods are always with you. I sent the councilmembers that story, and certainly have made that connection [to contemporary development]. But that wasn’t the purpose of the story. The purpose of the story was to tell what the last eruption of Haleakala was like.

Maui is such a famous, popular place but it seems like it hasn’t been explored much by writers, especially in terms of fiction. When I taught, I’d ask my students to write about various subjects and they’d write about everything except Maui, except Hawaii. I think it has to do with the fear that really great writers and stories can’t come out of this place. It’s self-doubt, whether our stories are applicable to the world. I remember once I sent a play to an LA theater and they wrote back that the rest of the United States couldn’t connect to us. That really upset me, because I disagree completely. My arguments is, I’ve read Jewish stories of New York, I’ve read the Chicago black stories. Did I connect with those? Heck yeah I connected with them—we’re all a little bit Jewish, we’re all a little bit black and we’re all a little bit Maui. People also feel comfortable writing what they see a lot of and what they know is popular, and you don’t have a lot of examples of Maui writers and Maui stories. So there’s no inspirational leadership.

“My students [used] to…write about everything except Maui, except Hawaii. I think it has to do with the fear that really great writers and stories can’t come out of this place.” Do you think that, with this book and your other work, you could provide that leadership? I’m starting this, along with a few other people, but I would always tell my students, it’s up to you guys to continue it. I don’t have the time in my life to tell all these stories; they’re lining up like soldiers in a parade. In the book, I write about seven locales, but there’s no Hana story, for example. There are so many great stories waiting to be told.

So you’re hopeful, then? I have my doubts like any person, whether this is going to take off. But at least I can say I did it, that I put it out there. And you know, I hate to say it but it’s true: a lot of writers go to their graves without having a hit, and don’t have one until they’re long gone [laughs].

If you had to pick a unifying theme for the book, what would it be? Whether it was intended or not, there’s a diversity that comes out in each story—that idea of the melting pot, the blending. Some of the pre-contact stories are separate from that, but the rest are about how we’re interconnected. The crime in the detective story is solved with everybody helping out—the auntie saw this and the uncle saw that. As time goes by, these connections start to peel away and that creates a different Maui. I’ve lived here all my life and sometimes I’ll see someone and ask them, Who was your father? Who was your grandfather?, and the connections reveal themselves. But as we’ve gotten more modern, that’s started to dissipate. We’ve become an island of speed bumps and gates. Does that answer your question? I don’t know—it’s a good question, a big question. I’ll work on that one for part two. MTW For more info, visit undermauiskies.com.

Smart brew Maui’s only drive-through espresso stand offers rich, Seattle-style java ou can’t say that we have much of a coffee culture, here on Maui. We’re bombarded by so many sugary-sweet, milk and syrupinfused substances that we can’t taste the espresso anymore. The franchise coffee-sellers give us watered down coffee, floundering in whipped cream

and syrup, served to us by hipper-thanthou baristas with asymmetrical haircuts while listening to intimidating Eurotrance. Clad in a new coat of bright Caribbean blue paint, Akamai Coffee is here to save us. The denizens of Maui who have been starved for good coffee can find refuge in Akamai Coffee, truly an oasis in this java-deprived desert. Akamai is Maui’s only drive-through coffee shop, and they’ve served the caffeinehungry of Maui since February 2007. And if you know the transient nature of Maui’s restaurant scene, you know that this is quite a feat for a small business. Owner Kimberly Brown is not only beautiful (if you’re wondering what she looks like, just take a look-see at the logo), but fanatic about the quality of the coffee she sells. As she cheerfully notes, what most franchise

coffee sellers do to the delectable bean is “like throwing a steak in the microwave.” If that’s the case, Akamai Coffee is a gourmet grill. Most of the drinks at Akamai are espresso-based, and Brown makes sure that every little step is executed perfectly so that she can consistently serve her customers high quality drinks. Brown goes as far as to ship in a pre-roasted blend from Seattle called Caffe Del Sol, a mix of beans from Latin America, Africa and Indonesia. It has dark chocolate and praline undertones with a caramel finish. Part of what makes Akamai espresso stand out is the state of the art espresso maker Brown employs, which you’d be hard to find anywhere on-island. Bestsellers include the frappe (served in white chocolate, chocolate and caramel) and the vanilla latte. The white chocolate frappe will change your life…or at least your coffee drinking habits. Unlike other frozen coffee drinks, it isn’t drowned in syrup and whipped cream, which really lets the taste of the coffee shine through. Those not so into the joe can also pull up to this stand sans fear, as Akamai serves up a variety of other hot and cold beverages, among them amazing iced tea. They brew Numi Organic Teas, which are fair trade certified, and served them iced or hot. They’ve also struck a perfect balance of flavors with their chai. Other drinks include smoothies, Italian sodas and hot chocolate.

If you want something to chew on, Akamai offers scrumptious baked goods. All of this deliciousness is served to you by friendly and pretty baristas, who will customize your drink to your liking, including substituting milk for soy. If anything, it’s worth to visit Akamai Coffee just to see the fun messages they chalk all over the place. If you’re still a little wary, but would like to see what the buzz is about, check out their Facebook page, where they post trivia and even ask your opinion on how to decorate the shop. But I can guarantee you that once you have some of the coffee Akamai serves up, all other brews will pale in comparison. MTW Photos: Akamai Coffee Co. A woman on sitar and another tanpura player sit to his left.

Pandit Jasraj & Pandita Tripti Mukherjee When: Wednesday, Jul. 22, 7pm Where: The Studio Maui, Haiku Appearing to be part sage, part madman (though perhaps the two are just different sides of the same coin), Pandit Janraj strums his santoor with his right hand and waves his left hand around in florid motions that no doubt annunciate the most decidedly devotional message of the tunes he plays and sings.

Jasraj and disciple/female vocal counterpart (for lack of a better term) Pandita Tripti Mukherjee will give a rare performance on Maui this coming Wednesday at Studio Maui in Haiku. The appeal of such an event should extend beyond that of the yoga set. Anyone remotely interested in seeing a live performance of a type of music that employs nearly twice as many semitones – a full 22 compare to the West’s 12, according to an Ravi Shankar essay entitled “On Appreciation of Indian Classical Music,” may want to check out this performance. It’s not “Norwegian Wood” we’re talking about (as reverent as we are about the tune). This is an unadulterated raga performance. Jasraj is known as the “foremost exponent” of the Mewati Gharana of Hindustani music. Why this is important: Mewati Gharana is a type of musical lineage – seriously – that originated in the sixteenth century. To be a credible purveyor of the form – an exponent – you have to live and breathe it for years. You have to study with a guru who him or herself is an exponent of the mode. It is only after years of sadhana – devoted study – are you authorized to employ your prana (breath of life) within this form, as is the case with any true form of raga. For a while there, while in its infancy, Mewati Gharana is said to have only been passed from master to student in jungles under the cover of night; not exactly a tradition that the average Western conservatory would embrace. But this was centuries before Pandit Jasraj first learned of Mewati Gharana from his father (Pandit – teacher – Motiram). But it’s still not exactly something you can major in. Part of what makes Jasraj’s vocal style so otherworldly, especially to Westerners, is his command of a whole three-and-a-half octaves. His rapid fire scat syllables would scare the living daylights out of someone raised on Wonderbread and top

40. His hair is gray and wild. He sways. His arm movements, hapless at first glance, actually parallel his precise yet quivering annunciations. Part of what makes him unique is his incorporation of vocal counterpart in his performances, jugalbhandis (musical duels, essentially) performed between dueling male and female vocalists. Wednesday’s performance, of course, will feature Pandita Tripti Mukherjee holding down the feminine side of things. But she’s a hell of a lot more than just a pretty voice. In 2007 Mukherjee became the first Indian classical musician to perform at the White House (I’m guessing Dubya was out of town or under sedation for this one). Over a decade ago she started the Pandit Jasraj Institute for Research, Artistry and Appreciation (based initially in Philadelphia and named, of course, in honor of Jasraj, her guru) after observing a lack of appreciation for classical Indian vocals in the US. Her vocal style is tentative yet dynamic, bold yet irresistibly sweet. She, too, has an amazing range that can jump octaves like it’s nothing.

The reverence implicit in each of their vocal performances is not something a fuzzy YouTube clip can mask. To see the two perform side by side would be astonishing for those open to it. Shangri-La by the Sea, the Valley Isle’s only full-on Indian restaurant, will serve food at the event and vendors will add an international bazaar feel to the show. MTW

FILMCRITIQUE

BY BARRY WURST II BARRY@MAUITIME.COM

No ‘Love’ Good book gets ruined by film adaptation. What else is new? omic timing is a tricky thing, especially when it’s on the written page (think of how many laugh-free “joke” books you’ve skimmed through before tossing them back on the shelf). Larry Doyle’s novel, I Love You, Beth

C

I Love You, Beth Cooper

★★ ★★★★ Rated PG-13/102 min.

Cooper, was such a rarity and cause for celebration—it’s packed with laugh-’til-it-hurts twists and real honesty and succeeds as both a dark, playful tale and a parody of every high school comedy you can think of. The movie, directed by Chris Columbus, is a crushing disappoint-

ment, especially since Doyle wrote the screenplay. What the heck happened? Paul Rust stars as Denis Cooverman, a hopeless dweeb who, rather than fill his high school graduation speech with variations on “we can change the world,” declares in front of his graduating class that he is in love with Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere of Heroes), the girl of his dreams. The obvious problem with Denis’s romantic gesture is that they have never spoken, and she is the untouchable captain of the cheerleading squad with an insanely jealous boyfriend. Still, Cooper is visibly touched, which leads her boyfriend and his goon squad on an all night hunt for Denis’s blood. The set-up is mostly the same as the book, but watching the movie is like sitting in a bus, waiting for a great trip to start. And waiting. And waiting. The movie just sits there. There are no laughs; more work was put into the fight scenes (which are nothing special) than anything else. Rust wasn’t a good choice for the lead: his looks are unconventional and he can play

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

What do you mean this isn’t a satire? “nerdy” but he can’t carry a movie, let alone make you care about his annoying character. Panettiere was a good casting choice for Beth Cooper and she tries to bring more to her part than is in the script, but this won’t jump-start her career. The only scenes that work are some sweet moments late in the movie—but how hard is it to nail a scene where the characters hug and the music swells? The “nice” moments are forced and don’t mix with all the mean-spirited, unfunny set pieces that comprise so much of the movie. Despite his uneven body of work, Columbus seemed like a good fit to direct this. Yet, even considering how bad his

adaptation of the musical Rent was, this is easily his worst movie. With Alan Ruck (Cameron from Ferris Bueller) in the cast and the frequent references to great movies, it seems like the filmmakers thought they were making a modern day John Hughes picture. They thought wrong. It’s bad enough that I Love You, Beth Cooper is a stink bomb, but that its based on one of my favorite books is depressing. Seeing a bad movie made out of a beloved novel is like seeing someone doodle over your family photos with a permanent marker; you may always have the memories, but you’re stuck with a picture of how someone ruined them. People ask a lot of dumb questions, ones like “Do you know any Jewel songs?” and “Why don’t you want to have kids?” One of the dumbest is, “you’re vegan? What do you eat?” As if nutrition was only available in the event of another sentient being. Anyway, it’s gotten beating-overthe-head obvious that the way we have gone about rendering stuff edible on a mass scale is horribly ineffective on many levels. This includes the way livestock, grains and other foods are processed. Vegetarian Society of Hawaii founder/director and avid skydiver William Harris, M.D. is out to set things straight. His presentation, “In Search of an Optimal Diet,” is an exploration of the points in agricultural history that essentially had detrimental effects on human nutrition. Harris is formerly an emergency room physician and director of the Kaiser Permanente Vegetarian Lifestyle Clinic. His book, The Scientific Basis of Vegetarianism is available online at www.vegsource.com/harris.

A few months back some friends of mine were walking home from an undisclosed karaoke facility. Something caught the eye of one of these drunken mic slingers, whom shall here be known as CharTreuse. It was a downed crosswalk sign, still attached to its post. “This is highly illegal,” said one of the more cautious members of the party, who was visiting from the Mainland – Washington, DC to be specific. The whereabouts of the sign are still unknown to this day, but the appeal of roadside relics carries on in our hearts. Those who have read On the Road or any other Kerouac novel can probably attribute at least a few reckless acts to their having recently read Kerouac. This is part of the appeal of Kauai artist Wayne Zebzda’s “Road Trip,” an assembly of discarded road signs, reflective bumps and other highway guides. His exhibit coincides with Deybra Fair’s “Fair Towers,” a collection of towering art pieces made from found items; colorful ones like Dr. Seuss book covers.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

BY KATE BRADSHAW

Massive attack

Drink for the cause

Saturday (Jul. 18), 3pm, War Memorial Stadium, Kahului

Tuesday (Jul. 21), 7-10pm, South Shore Tiki Lounge, Kihei

Well, whattaya know? New Zealand-based reggae band Katchafire is coming back to Maui to perform in Maui Massive, a show that will also feature appearances by Ooklah the Moc, Natural Vibrations, Maoli and Anuhea. You know what that means. It means that I get to talk about how awesome New Zealand is. Katchafire played Wellington while I was living there. My dreadlocked flatmate went to check it out and returned to our Wai-Te-Ata Road flat glazey-eyed and enthused. I didn’t go. I was in my room scrutinizing Heart of Darkness with the help of a sixer of Speight’s Distinction Ale. I was writing an essay on Conrad’s use of the Manichean allegory as a plot device for my Postcolonial Literature and Theory class, a course that kicked my ass and blew my mind. I got an A – straight As, in fact – but I missed out on a good show. In any case, this will obviously be one of Maui’s top summer shows. Find tickets at Solid Clothing, Hana Highway Surf, Request Music and West Side Vibes. $25 advance/$30 door.

Have you ever suggested heading to the triangle on a given night only to hear the standard refrain (“No good can come from going to the triangle. No good!”) issue forth from the mouths of your friends? Well, contrary to the common belief that all the triangle has in store are black eyes, stolen wallets, poorly advised partnerings and shouting matches over which Stones albums constitute one’s top five, something beneficial is making its way to the fabled South Maui bar cluster. On Tuesday night partial proceeds from food and drink items purchased at Tiki Lounge will go to K a I p u K u k u i, an organization that focuses on Maui’s future. It features a program that trains Maui Nui residents for leadership roles in matters like environment, culture, tourism and government. Trainees are selected by nomination. Maui County provides partial funding for the program, but not enough to cover it all. Thus, ordering a mai-tai this evening means helping ensure that sound decisions – unlike those that typically happen in the triangle – are made in the future.

People are moody. You, of all people, should understand that, and cut everyone some slack this week. Whether it’s PMS, or because someone else was a bitch to them and they’re just paying it forward, or just because they woke up on the wrong side of the bed, try to let it slide. Don’t allow it to transform you into a similarly snappish grouch. Rise above it like the sensitive, compassionate, and intuitive angel you are (at least sometimes). And when they offer you an apology in a day or three, please graciously accept it.

OUR SPECIAL

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Underarm . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 750 Bikini . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 750 Brazilian . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 995

I went tubing recently with some friends. It was interesting to watch how much or little control everyone chose to exercise.. A few paddled frequently to help themselves avoid obstacles downstream, while others were happy to let the river carry them wherever it would, including into rocks or low-hanging tree branches. The lesson here: everyone got downstream more or less intact and at the same time, and how much they paddled seemed to have no bearing on the bumps, bruises, and scrapes suffered along the way. In other words, although you can exert some influence over your journey, whether or not you arrive at your destination (and in what shape) is mostly out of your hands. Therefore, instead of clinging to some arbitrary illusion of control, only exercise so much as will maximize the fun you have along the way.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Mutts are generally more robust, healthier, and long-lived than their purebred counterparts. Similarly plant crops with great genetic diversity are better able to resist vagaries of climate and pest infestation than their genetically-modified cousins, who may produce more, but are much more fragile—also generally less tasty and nutritious. This isn’t an edict that you should eschew the products of massive multinational seed conglomerates like Monsanto in favor of local heirloom varieties (although, actually, you should). I’m more trying to make the point that in your search for someone who is purely one thing, you may be missing the mark. Someone who’s a little bit of everything, and then some, might be a better match for the long haul.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) While this isn’t officially Everyone-Pick-On-Libras week (that comes later this year), it might as well be. You’re likely to be the recipient of a ton of unwanted (and mostly negative attention) in the days to come. Don’t flip out, or get yourself stuck in some victim mentality (“Everyone hates me and is out to get me!”). This is just temporary, and ironically has less to do with you and more to do with what else people have going on in their lives (or not going on, as the case may be; a lot of nastiness springs directly from sexual frustration). Soar below the radar where you can, and weather out the rest of the flying shit. It’ll pass soon.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) When young bull elephants begin to mature, they start to cause problems for the females in their herd. Eventually, the herd’s guiding matriarch casts them out. After that, they survive on their own or in the company of other young males in the same situation. Obviously, they are compelled by the hormones and instincts inherent to their species—but are you? You’re risking a wonderfully comfortable and secure situation with your questionable behavior. Some people have already been very tolerant and understanding, but their patience has limits. Sooner or later, it’ll be too much trouble to put up with that stuff, and they’ll stop doing so. Unless you’d rather it be sooner than later, I’d quit that shit, cold turkey.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Almost as much of our oil goes into our food as into our cars, because people insist on eating food that was grown or produced far away from where they live. If everyone in America ate just a single meal a week composed entirely of local organic meat and produce, we’d reduce national oil consumption by over a million gallons every week. Small changes can make a big difference, and make you happier and healthier in the process. Remember that this week; there’s no need for massive difficult-to-implement overhauls of your entire life; slight course corrections will not only get you efficiently to where you want to go, but do so in a much richer and more enjoyable way.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) There’s a vast difference between the sex you read about in a smutty romance novel and what you actually have in real life. Likewise, a sitcom family is not a real family. Trying to compare the two, or worse, recreate fiction in your day-to-day, is just an all-around bad idea. It will only lead to dissatisfaction and misery for all concerned—you because you’re disappointed, and everyone else because there’s just no way they can live up to your literally unrealistic expectations. Keep fiction where it belongs and learn to see and enjoy real life for all its beautiful, fascinating, and confounding imperfections.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

– – “Na– ‘Oiwi ‘Olino – People Seeking Wisdom” 6:30a.m. – 9a.m. weekday mornings on

The worst thing you can do is try to drive someone away by making things unpleasant for them (covertly or openly). I see employers do this to employees and people doing it to lovers they’d like to be rid of. It’s pretty much the cruelest way to bring about the outcome you want. Please try to take the kinder, if more difficult approach: being direct and firm. That takes guts, honesty, and a willingness to “be the bad guy.” But let’s face it—in this particular instance, you are. Own up to it, so you don’t have to be the sly villain who plots in secret—instead you can be the one everyone is at least half rooting for.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) What would you do if I told you that there were eleven different ways you could make the person you love most cry out in pure delight, right now, but you only knew less than five of them? Hopefully, if you were a dedicated friend/lover, you would seek to discover at least a few more. Make it your goal to evoke an exclamation of joy from that special someone at least once a week for the next three months, without ever repeating your methods. Why shouldn’t you? There’s nothing but win in that plan, for all concerned.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Some people can’t help being ugly on the outside, but no one really needs to be ugly on the inside. Everyone can cultivate qualities people frequently find beautiful, such as compassion, generosity, kindness, humor, and selflessness. That kind of beauty transcends and outlasts the physical kind, anyway. Regardless of how gorgeous your particular bag of skin and hair is, focus intensely this week on cultivating and exemplifying the standards of inner beauty for which you should be best known. If you’re relying on your sparkling smile and killer abs to carry you through the world, you’re doing it wrong.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Just as you can’t fault a tree for extending its branches to better catch the light, you can’t blame the humans you know for growing in ways designed to help them get the things they need (or think they need, anyway). Yet that is essentially what you’re doing: getting pissed at someone for pursuing their desires, most of which lie outside the realm of conscious thought and well-researched decisions. Stop being so judgmental. Climb down off your high horse, and either help them get what they’re reaching for, or get the hell out of their way.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re like a spider who thinks she’s got her prey all securely wrapped up in her web; she thinks it has no choice but to sit tight until she’s ready for it. To her dismay, she may discover that it was actually only humoring her. As soon as it gets bored, it can easily rip free of her little “trap” and be on its merry way, leaving behind a swathe of silken destruction. Get the picture? Don’t count on anyone just sticking around and waiting around for you. You haven’t got that much power and you’re not that compelling. Make hanging around worth their while—or they won’t.
