LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR MUSIC TO HIS EARS I read with great interest your article about the Na Hoku Hanohano Award ceremony (“The ‘Hawaiian Grammys,’” July 5, 2007). I am a proud member of HARA [Hawaiian Academy of Recording Arts] and I had the opportunity to go to the awards last year when an album of mine was nominated. It was indeed amazing and wonderful to see so much musical talent in one place. I would like to clear up a couple of misconceptions you may have about the Grammy Awards for Best Hawaiian Album. You are quite correct when you say that “some local music industry insiders” have been unhappy with the albums selected for Grammys. These folks worked hard to get a separate category established for Hawaiian music, and I’m sure they had the expectation that groups currently popular in Hawai‘i (in terms of CD sales and radio airplay) would win the awards. Instead, all of the Grammys so far have gone to traditional Hawaiian music in the form of slack key albums. Obviously, those promoting more contemporary music are disappointed, understandably so. Why are the members of the academy voting for this traditional music? Are they making “safe” or “uninformed” choices? Some in the Hawaiian music industry may disagree with me, but I believe that the reason the Recording Academy voters have chosen as they have, is that slack key artists have been touring all over the world for many years, and this is the music that is known as Hawaiian to many people. Because all of the Grammy-winning albums so far have been compilations, the awards have gone to the producers. This is because the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) gives the award to a person or persons responsible for over 50 percent of the album. With a compilation, where each artist has a single track on an album, NARAS gives the Grammy to the producer. You should know, however, that of the eight Grammys handed out so far in this category, only three went to non-Hawaiians: Charles Brotman and myself (2). The other five went to Hawaiian-born individuals: George Kahumoku Jr., Wayne Wong (2) and Daniel Ho (2). Another important issue for us is raised when you say in your article that albums have been chosen “that contained no Hawaiian language whatsoever.” In fact, this was only true of the first album to win the award. The albums for 2005 and
2006 are mostly Hawaiian language albums, performed by real Hawaiians (George Kahumoku Jr., Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi and others). We’re proud of our Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series here on Maui, now in its fourth year of operation. Our goal is to promote and preserve traditional Hawaiian mele. We feel that we represent Hawai‘i well at the Grammy awards with this music. -Paul Konwiser, Producer, Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series

Samantha Campos responds: I understand and agree with everything you say, Mr. Producer. My intention was to briefly present all the issues raised by introducing the Hawaiian Music category to the Grammys—the pride of its inclusion, as well as the discontent of its seemingly narrow scope. Still, as deserved as the Grammy winners are, it’s impossible to please all players in the wide world of Hawaiian music with one categorical accolade. That’s why I believe the Na Hoku Hanohano awards are so beloved and prominent within this community, and have been for the past 30 years.
INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY, ANYONE? I read your news every now and then to see what is going on in the little island of Maui. To be perfectly honest, I think your points, however, are a bit biased. In regard to your publication with the bar Paradice Bluz (“15 Days,” May 10, 2007), facts are facts. Someone died because of its negligence, the gentleman was intoxicated and he should have not been allowed to drink while in the club. The employees serving him should have noticed his condition, but they did not and because of this, he got into his car and killed himself. But what if he had killed someone else, a child as well? Would your weekly magazine be as consoling and forgiving to the owner? I think the place should have been shut down and a 15-day closer is actually minor compared to the damage that has taken place and could have taken place. The news should be reported, not the magazine’s position on the case. So what if he loses $30,000? No matter of money can bring back a life at the hands of negligence and to say, “I should have pleaded not guilty,” is insane. What kind of a heart does the supposed owner have? He should take the responsibility and if he had any morals, close the place himself out of guilt. Not that this couldn’t have happened in another club anywhere in the nation, but to say that the liquor control is harsh in its judgment, I would say the Liquor Control should have closed the Continued on page 6

doors forever and thrown away the key, but that is my opinion. -Anonymous, via email. Anthony Pignataro responds: I think you’re confusing two events— over-serving a customer and driving while intoxicated—which aren’t both the fault of a bar owner. Yes, Paradice Bluz was found guilty of over-serving an intoxicated customer, and while it’s possible club staff could have pressed him on the need to get a ride home, at no time did anyone at the club press car keys into his hand and force him to drive home.

Just want to thank the guy who ruined my life by giving me genital warts and Herpes. Very nice of you to keep the fact that you had them a secret from me. I had to find out from another woman who got them from you. I’ll have them for the rest of my life, and quite possibly I’ll get ovarian cancer because of them. And I have to tell everyone I want to become involved with too, since they might get them. And this is all because you refused to wear a rubber, saying you were so big that it hurt to do so. How stupid I was to believe you. Well, at least you’ve left the islands—probably because you were sleeping with all your friends’ wives and girlfriends. And to think that I felt sorry for you because you said everyone was jealous of you and hated you. But most of all, I’m amazed that you actually wondered why no one wanted to say goodbye to you before you left.

Paying Attention
The very latest on some of Maui’s key issues
Example #73 of how the Maui County Liquor Commissioners don’t pay attention:

Interested in what’s going on around you on Maui, but don’t have time to attend meetings? Maybe you’ve been reading the papers, but wonder if there’s more to some of the bigger issues than you’re getting? Here’s a quick tour of a few of Maui’s most important environmental and planning issues. So sit back and enjoy the view, but feel free to ask questions along the way:
8
Wailea 670 On Tuesday, July 25, at 1:30 p.m., the County Council Land Use Committee will discuss the future of South Maui. That’s when the committee takes up Wailea 670’s rezoning application. Two meetings held earlier this year, before the council began their long budget deliberations, were attended by only a few testifiers who spoke out with concerns of the current development plans for a private golf course and 1400 housing units. Since then, groups including Maui Tomorrow Foundation and SaveMakena.org have actively sought to inform the South Maui community about the potential impacts of Wailea 670. More than 200 people attended the South Maui Forum in May, listening to six panelists address poignant questions regarding the area’s water, traffic, smart growth, affordable housing and distinctive cultural and botanical sites. Recent traffic fatalities have underscored the overcrowding of our roads, and early summer drought conditions have helped magnify the need for prudent water planning. Earlier this month, council member Michelle Anderson re-introduced a bill modeled after California legislation dubbed the “Show Me The Water” law. It requires developers to demonstrate a guaranteed source of water for the next 20 years before getting any approvals. Wailea 670 developer Charlie Jencks insists they have plenty of water for their project, both for drinking and irrigation. But even if that were true, should our dwindling water resources be allocated for more luxury homes—half the project would be market priced—and yet another golf course in South Maui? The 2007 County Council has not yet had a litmus test issue to reveal how new council members may vote on key development proposals. It remains to be seen if the community
JULY 19, 2007
LC Watch More than half of the July 11, 2007 Liquor Commission hearing dealt with the crime situation at Kihei Kalama Village (KKV), and commissioners heard testimony from a police officer, LC officials, the property owner and various people who hold liquor licenses in that area. It was a lot to take in, but not nearly overwhelming. At one point, Commissioner Ron McOmber asked LC Director Franklyn Silva if new liquor license applications for KKV—or another area densely packed with licenses—gets routed to the Maui Police Department. Silva said no, and then for the first time in a long time, I could actually see that the wheels were turning in McOmber’s head.

will show up en masse as the Save Honolua Coalition supporters did at a March council hearing. One question worth asking: “Is an Environmental Impact Statement written back in 1988 sufficient for the revamped Wailea 670 project in 2007?” Hawai`i Superferry If you’ve been paying close attention to the saga of Hawai‘i Superferry’s (HSF) quest to connect the islands with their $200 million venture, you may have noticed that they didn’t meet their July 1 target to begin inter-island service. Docked at Pier 19 in Honolulu Harbor, there is a shroud of mystery around when the 350foot Alakai will begin voyages between Oahu and Maui, and Oahu and Kauai. The HSF website is taking reservations for voyages beginning Sept. 5, but notes that the inaugural voyage will not be on that date. Are HSF officials waiting until two legal challenges are heard in court next month? Do they believe they can avoid running aground on these legal speed bumps? Actually, it’s the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation that will be in court, facing arguments that they avoided environmental laws and underestimated impacts for $40 million in harbor improvements statewide needed to accommodate the Superferry. To local environmental groups leading the challenges, this may be the last stand to delay the arrival of Hawai‘i Superferry, and to uphold the integrity of Hawai‘i State Statutes for environmental review. On the Big Island, residents are demanding full environmental studies

before building an entire new facility, Pier 4 at Kawaihae Harbor, where HSF hopes to visit beginning in 2009. Word from Kauai is that noted California environmental law attorney Stephan Volker has been hired to pursue a lawsuit challenging Hawai‘i Superferry on the basis of federal endangered species and marine mammal protection laws. The short version of the video, Will the Superferry Kill Humpback Whales? has already registered nearly 3,400 viewings on YouTube. The Superferry is also on a collision course with higher prices; on July 4 the company announced that they’ll add a fuel surcharge of nearly 31 percent to travel costs. But HSF is convinced that travelers will be willing to pay more, see SPEED, page 11
So that’s why you always give us the number of already existing liquor licenses within 500 feet of an applicant’s location, McOmber said to Silva, registering perhaps for the first time why LC Officer Mike Kawagishi always mentioned exactly how many other licenses already existed close by when reporting on the latest liquor license applicant. And the implication—that KKV is densely packed with liquor licenses because past Liquor Commissions allowed it to become so—wasn’t lost on McOmber, either. “If it starts here, maybe we should be more vigilant,” he told his colleagues on the panel. Whether McOmber’s colleagues understood what he was saying is debatable. Following up on McOmber’s suggestion, Commissioner Merlyn Winters—who also spent five years on the Liquor Commission in the late 1990s—asked Silva if he could put a “red flag” on applications destined for areas already packed with bars. “It can be part of the report,” he said, before adding that LC officials already do that. “We tell you how many licensees are in that area,” he said, as though his exchange with McOmber just moments before hadn’t actually taken place.

LAND HO? With some hesitation and trepidation, we’re going to move A&B up a notch on news that it wants to buy up even more of the state. “We will call upon him [A&B Properties VP Lance Parker] to significantly increase our level of activity in the Hawaii real estate market,” company Senior Vice President Michael Wright said in a July 10, 2007 online Pacific Business News story. Given that A&B already controls 89,000 commercial, residential, agricultural and open space acres of Hawai`i, buying up a few more—or a lot more—acres is probably a good thing, though given the increasing volatility of the American real estate market, it might just be too much of a good thing.

ROOM TO GROW Looks like Everett Dowling of Dowling Co. is really going to get his money’s worth. Guy is part of the hui that just paid $575 million for Makena Resort and the Maui Prince Hotel, and it looks like the sky’s the limit for the island’s hotel industry. According to a July 13 online Pacific Business News story, Hospitality Advisors says our island’s hotels are running at 82.5 percent occupation, which while down 3.4 points from last summer’s number, is four and a half points higher than the state average and a stunning 22 points over the national average. What’s more, the average island room rate is $319, which is up an impressive 13.9 percent over last summer. Is it any wonder Dowling wants to balloon the size of Makena Resort? MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, July 11 Two years. That’s the prison sentence Rajdatta Patkar, 46, potentially faces for his pleading guilty to one count of extorting $35,000 from Bob Awana, Governor Linda Lingle’s former chief of staff, in exchange for keeping a bunch of “unseemly emails” allegedly involving Awana and some chick in the Philippines under wraps. And suddenly, Lingle—who has refused all requests to comment after she sacked Awana on June 28— has found her tongue. “I was very glad he [Patkar] was convicted because I don’t think anyone should blackmail and extort another person,” Lingle said last night, according to today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Did you hear that, boys and girls? Governor Lingle doesn’t think people should run around and blackmail people. Isn’t that wonderful? But what was really amazing was that Lingle then said that she was “especially glad because they [they?] did it to a friend of mine, Bob, who was the victim in this case, and I’m glad that the guy was convict-

ed.” That sound you just heard was that of the wheels of logic and commonsense screeching to a halt. Bob Awana—her longtime chief of staff who she fired a couple weeks ago after his name and the word “scandal” became interconnected—is still her friend?!
THURSDAY, July 12 So this morning, as I do every Thursday morning, I did my 10-minute appearance on Fred Guzman’s eminently reasonable and informative program The Talk of Maui, which airs from 6-8 a.m. weekday mornings on the AM station Fox News 900. The station, part of the Greater Fox News Co-Prosperity Sphere, is of course ultimately run by the Fox News Don Roger Ailes. Now a few decades before he turned the innocuous words “Fair and Balanced” into a nasty partisan drumbeat, Ailes was a television consultant to President Richard Nixon, who was known in his day as much for opening China and covering up Watergate as he was for sweating profusely on camera. Anyway, today the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in sunny, boring Yorba Linda, California released a five-page, 1970 memo from Ailes to thenNixon Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman. Mostly concerned with technical matters— lighting, mic placement, how much beardstick to apply to Nixon’s always shiny mug—the memo contains this golden little bit of advice that tells us more about the most disgraced president in U.S. history than a dozen biographies: “I think it is important for the President to show a little more concern for Mrs. Nixon as he moves through the crowd,” Ailes wrote. “At one point he walked off in a different direction. Mrs. Nixon wasn’t looking and had to run to catch up. From time to time he should talk to her and smile at her. Women voters are particularly sensitive to how a man treats his wife in public. The more attention she gets, the happier they are.”
FRIDAY, July 13 Oh no! Governor Lingle has just 78 friends! Virtual friends, that is: “Several governors boast thousands of virtual friendships,” reported Stateline.org, an online journal of state government-related news stories, on July 10. “California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) counts more than 8,000 Facebook friends. By contrast, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle (R)
Mum’s the word
has only 78 friends.” Yes, she’s been governor since 2002, and she only has 78 friends. So sad.
SATURDAY, July 14 What was that? How many virtual friends does Maui Time have? Shut up! We’re working on it!
SUNDAY, July 15 Apparently encouraged by Lingle’s little statement on her disgraced ex-chief of staff, the Associated Press now has a story in today’s Maui News bashing her for going “mum” once again why she apparently sat on her hands for so long while myriad federal investigators swirled about Awana, forcing his resignation only after news of the scandals became public. What a shock! What do you expect her to say? Yeah, you got me. Bob and I, we struck a deal—a gangster’s pact, really—that I’d look the other way on all these investigations and he could go on being my top aide, but only on the condition that you meddling kids stayed in the dark. If one whiff of these scandals should ever reach the public, I promised to throw him overboard like last night’s garbage. But since she hasn’t said anything like that, the AP has gone and done something really nasty: dig up some of Lingle’s old 2002 campaign promises that her administration would always be

above board. “[I will] hold myself and those who serve in government to the people of Hawaii for our official actions, our personal behavior, our campaign promises,” Lingle pledged in a 2002 campaign pamphlet, according to the story. What’s more, the AP then quotes one of Lingle’s allies— Republican state Senator Sam Slom of Diamond Head—as saying “There have been rumors and allegations for years” about Awana, whom he called her “bestest buddy.” Now that’s gotta hurt.
MONDAY, July 16 Now the AP is reporting that the Maui County Salary Commission wants to give the Maui County Council a pay hike. The reason given, according to the AP, is that the council is having a hard time attracting good people at the current pay rate. “We’re all looking for who is going to be there in the future and how are we going to get them to run,” Salary Commissioner Jason Williams said in the story. Now this is fantastic, but not because Williams just implied that only hard-luck cases will run for the council now. And not because Maui County Councilmembers already make more money each year than their Honolulu counterparts, either. No, this is fantastic because, as everyone who takes a Civics 101 class in college knows, people don’t run for public office to make gobs of cash—they run to get gobs of power. If all they wanted was money, there are plenty of powerful development firms around the island that I’m sure would snap them up in a second.
TUESDAY, July 17 Mmm… power. Anthony Pignataro does generally discuss ongoing investigations. MTW
ROBREPORT SPEED: continued from page 8 such as the $20 upgrade for the Hahalua Lounge, with seating that’s “a full five inches wider than passenger seating elsewhere.” I wonder if they have considered the marketing slogan, “Get you okole over to a Neighbor Island?” Biofuels The Maui News account of a recent public meeting by Hawai‘i Electric Company (HECO) to discuss plans for importing palm oil to fire their power plants, labeled those questioning the plan as “skeptics,” a word the reporter used five times. As one who attended the meeting, I’d say that HECO and its ally, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), did little to appease a myriad of questions and concerns asked by the standing-room-only crowd at Maui Community College. The basic unanswered question was how importing palm oil harvested thousands of miles away in countries where rainforests are slashed and burned, orangutans are slaughtered for bounty (for eating oil palm fruit) and indigenous rights are trampled, can be considered “sustainable.” It also appears that BlueEarth Maui Biofuels LLC, partnering with Maui Electric to open a huge biodiesel refinery on Maui by 2009, is poised to avoid preparing an environmental impact statement. I guess somebody has to keep those “skeptical” environmentalists busy with legal challenges. HECO and NRDC claim their effort to “certify sustainably produced palm oil” will help the industry move towards better practices, though others believe it will simply increase price and demand in the industry, creating a larger marketplace for ecologically destructive practices. A coalition of five Hawai‘i environmental and indigenous groups registered official comments to the HECO/NRDC plan, and are finding global support. More than 40 groups from 14 countries have signed on to the Draft
NEWSOFTHEWEIRD Analysis of Proposed Sustainability Criteria for HECO’s Procurement of Biodiesel from Palm Oil, submitted by Life of the Land, KAHEA, ‘Ilio‘ulaokalani Coalition, Sierra Club-Maui and Environmental Defense Hawai‘i. Perhaps those who would portray bona fide concerns as mere “skepticism” would be wise to view the mountain of compelling information on Life of the Land’s Biofuel Blog page, www.lifeofthelandhawaii.org. Invasive Species The coqui frog, that tiny, noisy posterchild for invasive species efforts in Hawai‘i, hasn’t been in the news much lately. In this case, no news is good news. Thanks to aggressive efforts by Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC), the coqui frog, native to Puerto Rico and capable of mating calls louder than 70 decibels, is “up against the ropes,” according to Adam Radford of MISC. Once reported at dozens of locations, only nine sites remain on Maui. With the exception of one large site, Maliko Gulch in the Kaluanui area, all other sites probably have no more than a few frogs remaining. A commercial nursery in a residential area of Kihei was formerly Ground Zero for frog populations in South Maui. They were brought into cooperation to spray for frogs only after a visit by previous Mayor Alan Arakawa and his wife Ann. Nocturnal visitors to this locale may now note the dramatic change from the cacophonous din which existed only last year, to the new sounds of silence. Governor Linda Lingle recently vetoed Senate Bill 1066 to authorize funding for agricultural inspections to support invasive species efforts. With news that the small, stinging nettle caterpillar has reached Maui from the Big Island, it’s fortunate that the legislature voted to override her veto. Invasive species successes have come from diligent efforts by many dedicated individuals, working to protect what’s unique and special about Maui. Similar diligence may be required to safeguard our island and our quality of life from bigmoney development proposals such as Wailea 670, Hawai‘i Superferry and BlueEarth Biofuels. MTW
GRIN AND BEAR IT After several reports of grizzly bears intimidating people near Alaska’s Russian River, the state Department of Fish and Game recently gave several usual-suspect bears makeovers, using ordinary hair dye in bright colors (yellow, green, orange, blue) to make it easier for people to identify the specific bears that are menacing them. Environmentalists were critical, objecting to turning pristine wilderness into a gaudy, “punk”-colored park. Animal-rights activists, too, suggested that colored bears might find socializing difficult, but a bear researcher quoted by the Anchorage Daily News discounted that fear, based on a previous, similar project.
YIKES! On one fateful day in 2003 in Sikeston, Mo., according to Holly Adams, she had sex at different times with Raymon and Richard Miller, who are identical twins and who did not know about each other’s encounter. Adams became pregnant, but both Millers deny paternity despite, of course, an identical DNA match for each brother (with both claiming that it must have been the other). Adams has named Raymon the father, and a court must decide paternity and child support just like courts did before DNA testing was developed.

They also found that the passenger was local alderman Tom Johnson, who called the driver his “helper” at his middle-of-the-night task of personally putting up yard signs for his campaign for mayor. According to the Rapid City Journal, Johnson continually referred to the driver as a woman, but police later learned that the driver was a man dressed as a woman, which Johnson claimed he was shocked to find out.
NATURE CALLING About 100 people were able to escape the perhaps-fatal effects of a sinkhole that collapsed under their one-story apartment house in eastern Sarawak, Borneo, in April, only because Renjis Empati, 57, had arisen in the middle of the night to go to the communal toilet. He noticed the ground moving and awakened all the residents. Said one woman, “If it were not for him, most of us would be dead by now.”

According to an FBI agent interviewed by The Columbus Dispatch, the writer appears to be growing angrier and may have recently included an insecticide-like substance in letters, with the last batch predicting that, unless changes are made, there will be “88” assaults, based on the writer’s arcane formula. O
ne of the great celebrity tours in American history took wing on July 20, 1927. Two months after being the first to fly solo directly across the Atlantic Ocean, Charles A. Lindbergh embarked on a three-month, nationwide extravaganza. In the Spirit of St. Louis, the same plane in which he had tamed the Atlantic, the aviator touched down in 48 states and visited 92 cities. He gave 147 speeches, rode in 1,290 miles of parades and was acclaimed by millions of spectators. With that one tour, according to some accounts, he transformed Americans toward the cause of aviation. Previously, the public had been faltering in support of the new mode of transportation. But as for his influence upon the country—and the world, for that matter—Lindbergh was just beginning. This is a subject that I am more qualified to speak of than most people. On Nov. 4, 1927, two weeks after completing the tour, Lindbergh was flying from Long Island to Buffalo, New York when he had to make an emergency landing due to weather. Like the veteran barnstormer that he was, he set his aircraft down in a hayfield to wait for conditions to clear. Located in rural Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, that hayfield was owned by my family. In the 1950s and ‘60s, I grew up in the farmhouse overlooking that field. Often my mother and my grandfather would tell of how Lindbergh came to the kitchen door that stormy evening, how he warmed his hands over the coal stove and how he later sat in the living room reading a magazine. That night, word of his presence there spread like fire through an old barn. The next day thousands of people flocked to the field to see him, despite frigid weather and country roads “fearfully muddy,” as my mother put it. As a boy, I often would contemplate that 10-acre “flat,” as such fields are referred to back there. It stretches out along a valley floor, with steep hills rolling off to either side, typical of northeastern Pennsylvania. For “Lucky Lindy,” it was not a matter of mere chance here; he had picked one of the few places suitable for landing for miles around. His skill as a pilot was obvious, even years later. Sometimes as we baled hay or cut corn off the piece, I’d try to imagine it all—the man, the crowds, the airplane—and I’d wonder what was it all about. Just what was the lure of this person, to draw so many to this remote location? “People were touched,” one relative of mine often said. “People walked around with these goofy grins about them. They’d go up just to reach out and feel his uniform. The poor guy was mobbed. I don’t blame him for keeping to himself.” My mother was just six years old back then, but she knew all about the “Lone Eagle.” “He was the most famous man in the world,” she would explain. “Even more famous than the President.” With a tinge of pride, she would point to the corner of the living room. “He sat right there in that chair and I sat in his lap.” I didn’t realize it at the time, but this all set me off on some kind of search. Ever since, I’ve been reading about Lindbergh, visiting Lindbergh sites around the country, including his house and Charles Lindbergh (second from left) in Susquehanna County, Penna., in 1927. gravesite here on Maui, and interviewing people about him. In a sense, I’ve been trying to catch up The author grew up on the farm in the background. with the man, his essence and his appeal. Little did I realize what a job it was going to be.

Portugal in 1919, accomplishing the first transatlantic passage by air, a good eight years before Lindbergh did. Nor was his feat far ahead of its time. Other daring flyers made similar crossings on the Atlantic in the weeks following Lindbergh’s. Plus some equally impressive records—conquering the Pacific Ocean, a much wider body of water, for instance—were set soon after by other pilots. But as the years went on, the public discarded these other names like used confetti. Little known as well is the fact that Lindbergh was vying for prize money, in addition to trying to mark an aviation first. Twenty-five thousand dollars was promised by a New York hotel owner to the first person to pass over the Atlantic, in either direction. Lindbergh laid claim to the prize May 21, 1927 after 33 1/2 hours in the air. As he made his approach to Le Bourget Field near Paris, France little did he realize that as soon as his tires impacted that runway, he and the world would never be the same. An estimated 100,000 people had gathered in the night to welcome him. The effect on them was electric. Police tried to hold back the crowd but it was overtaken with the frenzy of the moment. Thousands surged through and swarmed the plane before the propeller even stopped spinning. Some people ripped shreds of fabric from the Spirit of St. Louis; others dragged the aviator from the cockpit and ecstatically carried him off on their shoulders. People danced and wept and popped corks from champagne. “The whole place was gone insane with joy,” one eyewitness remembered. “Everyone had the best of intentions,” Lindbergh later wrote of the scene, “but no one seemed to know what they were.” In the weeks that followed, people everywhere were infused with similar excitement over the man and what he did. Lindbergh’s stature as a hero grew to fantastic proportions. Wherever he went—Brussels, London, New York—wildly waving admirers packed the waysides. Ticker-tape parades were held in his honor. Presidents and royalty received him. In the process of it all, he became the first mass-media celebrity in history. Granted, his was a courageous, magnificent flight, the first of its kind ever. But somehow it didn’t quite add up—this one act has never fully explained the fascination and star-effect that followed him thereafter, nor how he managed to energize so many. He was surprised by it all himself. “I was astonished at the effect my successful landing in France had on the nations of the world,” he wrote. “To me, it was like a match igniting a bonfire.” The symbolism was certainly inspiring to many: The lone aviator pressing on through fatigue and darkness and rain, the angry waves churning below. Other attempts had been made by teams of pilots, alternating at the controls. While he, single-handedly, had conquered the great abyss of the open ocean. For others, he became the ray of hope in a gray and weary world, still reeling from the mass slaughters and disillusionments of World War I. Perhaps it had to do with something inside the man—his modesty, his charisma. Whatever it was, something about him and his accomplishment aroused the sense of awe that exists in almost everyone.
O
riginally trained in mechanics, he became known as a friend of the working person, a reputation also due to the rickety aircraft of the times. While businessmen or politicians may finance airplanes, he knew that it was mechanics who fixed them. They often were responsible for an aviator’s successes or failures. And
failures were plentiful back then—20 flyers were lost trying to cross the Atlantic in the year spanning 1927 and 1928 alone. A demonstration of this practical part of him occurred seconds after his landing at Paris. As thousands of screaming Frenchmen descended upon him, he yelled out from the cockpit, “Are there any mechanics here?” One of his greatest skills was in landing in out-ofthe-way places— fields, pastures and roads. His landing in my family’s hayfield was a good example. As witnessed by my relatives, he flew back and forth a number of times only a few feet above the ground, inspecting the terrain. When he came to a hedgerow, he’d gun the engine and hop over “like a steeplechaser” before he eventually landed his Curtiss Hawk. He even became adept at flying low over a person on the ground, cutting the throttle and hollering down for directions. Most famously, on his flight across the Atlantic he came upon some fishing boats. Only 20 feet or so above the deck, he hovered the Spirit of St. Louis overhead and called down to a fisherman, “Which way to Ireland?” Prior to his record flight, the public had lost much of its original enthusiasm for aviation. The U.S. Government failed to appropriate money for a new generation of aircraft following World War I, as many pioneers in the field had hoped it would. In short, the aircraft industry in this country was teetering, on the verge of collapse. Then came Lindbergh. The impact of his achievement was explosive: new technologies were financed, interest by the military reawakened, an exciting wave of adventurism launched. Lindbergh became the ambassador of this resilience, traveling widely and promoting ventures into the sky. On one of these ventures he visited the island of Maui. As with so many visitors here, the island became his special place, his retreat from the turbulences of life. And his turbulences were many—the kidnapping and murder of his son in 1932, his isolationist views about U.S. entry into World War II, his anti-Semitic remarks, his coldness to his wife and his affairs with other women, just to name some. Much of his popularity deflated toward the end of the 1930s. With war brewing in Europe, he opposed U.S. involvement. The low point may have come after he accepted a medal adorned with swastikas from Hermann Goring, head of Hitler’s air force. This caused an outcry worldwide and confusion among the public at large. Impressed with the high state of aviation and research there, he refused to give the medal back. He said it would be “an unnecessary insult” to the German government. Some people claimed he was being manipulated by the dictatorship. While this may have been true, he used his “in”
with Nazi officials to gather intelligence on their war machine that later was used to help defeat it. After Pearl Harbor, he signed onto the U.S. war effort as a technical adviser and even though a “civilian” flew 50 combat missions against the Japanese in the Pacific. But after the war, he never regained the status he once had as a public figure. In the 1960s he became a leader in the environmental movement and
championed the preserving of wilderness.
E
ventually, he acquired a modest house in Kipahulu on the “backside” of Maui. He spent most of his final years there. One friend and neighbor there commented, as to why he chose Kipahulu, “Because it’s a hundred-and-some curves south of Hana and a thousand potholes north of anywhere else. He was not a man who had to be around others to be comfortable.” In 1974, suffering from terminal cancer, he returned to Kipahulu to await the inevitable. He died there on Aug. 26, at the age of 72. As per his directives, he was placed in his coffin wearing his favorite working clothes. His remains were taken to the Palapala Ho‘omau Church in the back of a pickup truck. Just 14 people attended the short service, most of them locals. Admirers were told not to place funeral wreaths about or read messages out loud. He is buried on the church grounds in the shade of a Java plum tree. The two-line inscription at his gravesite comes from Psalm 139: “If I take wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea…” Appropriately enough, the site overlooks the ocean. You can imagine him walking there in his later years, peering off toward the horizon, reflecting upon journeys made over perilous waters. “I think my flight to Paris came too soon for the civilizations of the world,” Lindbergh confided to an Air Force general in the early 1950s, apparently not entirely comfortable with his legacy. “They were suddenly thrown together by air and they weren’t quite ready for it.” Later on, he argued against a lot of supersonic air travel, claiming that it would throw us out of balance and we would one day pay a price for it. Be that as it may, Charles Lindbergh was one of the greatest catalysts for change ever to live. Call him the avatar of aviation, the prophet of the skies, he zoomed us forward into a new dimension—travel in the air— and humanity has not been the same since. MTW

Every Sunday is blissfully the same. A lengthy prebreakfast motorcycle ride leads my family, friends and me to a restaurant where we can find good conversation, heckling and much needed coffee. We spread our attention to many Upcountry restaurants, yet more often than not we end up walking the familiar stairs up to the Kula Sandalwoods Cafe.

stomach belong to the Lokelani, a breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, ham, Swiss cheese and herb aioli smothered (not too heavily, just right) and served on a toasted home-baked onion bun. But if my appetite isn’t up to speed, the side order fruit bowl (a fresh and generous mix of apples, strawberries, apple bananas and pineapple) and an English muffin do me just fine. When I can bring myself to deviate from the Lokelani, the Sandalwoods’ omelets hit the spot. Three variations offer fresh veggies, various cheeses and meats, if you like (yes, Portuguese sausage is an option), complete with a pleasant presentation. Most importantly, chef Eleanor is always attentive and delivers when I ask that she prepare my bacon extra crispy. Bless her heart. The lunch menu, available Monday through Friday till 2:30 p.m., is very reasonably priced. No item exceeds $10–considering the exorbitant cost of every little thing on Maui these days, I think I’ll take a minute to appreciate this. I can flash an Alexander Hamilton and get a grilled beef steak sandwich with the flavorful herb aioli sauce, caramelized onions and cheese, or a homemade kalua pork sandwich or cheeseburger with all the fixings. Or for less than $7 I can get my mitts on a mini panini, a grilled cheese sandwich or a mixed green salad. I’m not gonna lie: the only thing that properly tops off any fulfilling meal—at Sandalwoods or any other place—is a Chocolate Lava Flow Cake. Sandalwood’s concoction of warmed moist chocolate cake with molten chocolate lying dormant inside sells itself. All and all, between Jamie and Eleanor and the surrounding citrus trees, ti leaves, bottle brush flowers and ferns that adorn the property, the lodge-like inside dining area and of course the Chocolate Lava Flow Cake, Kula Sandalwoods Cafe is a welcoming place that wants nothing more than to please. The easy-going Sunday brunch makes it one of the few remaining homey Upcountry restaurants where a person can eat unrushed and leave satisfied with a smile. Who knows, Jamie might get to know your coffee and bacon preferences, too. MTW

Free Beer! Saturday (July 21), 4-11 p.m. at Campbell Park in Lahaina [FILM, FOOD, MUSIC] Okay, not really free beer. But it’s free films! MauiFEST Hawai`i is back, and on the Westside this year, with premier films, local musicians and lots of food, fun and crafts. Unlike that other annual film festival, this celebration of Hawaiian culture is free to all, leaving you no excuse not to spend the evening watching movies like Heart of a Soul Surfer (the Bethany Hamilton saga) or Ki Ho`alu (“Loosen the Key”), a recent Emmy winner on slack key guitar player Keola Beamer. Also for your underthe-stars viewing pleasure will be Joy Ride, (an extreme boogie boarding flick), Sharks, Stewards of the Reef, Hawai`i, Message in the Waves, The Shimmering–another Keola Beamer story–and three New Zealand films: Very Nice Honeymoon, Two Cars-One Night and Hawaikii. If that’s not enough to keep you entertained all day, expect to be graced with performances by Grammy Award-winning artists John Keawe and Dennis Kamakahi, jazz legend Mel Martin, hula dancing from `Ulalena performers, and more. Just too much fun to list! To top it all off, local radio personality Uncle Boy Kanae will be mastering all that is ceremonious, and there will be lots of good, local food available, so show up with lawn chairs and blankets but leave mama’s famous macaroni salad in the cooler at home. Did I mention it’s free? Campbell Park is located on Front Street between Wharf Cinema Center and Baldwin House Museum. For info visit www.mauifest.net. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

[ROOTS/ROCK/REGGAE/HAWAIIAN] San Diego’s Tribal Seeds are coming to the island this weekend to put a little rock in your roots music on their Summer Massive 2007 tour. Their debut album, Youth RebelLion, blends rock and reggae for a unique sound that’s heavily influenced by artists like Bob Marley, Steel Pulse and Midnite. The rebels have shared stages with big names like The Wailers, Matisyahu and Gregory Issacs, and they’ll share this stage with special guest and Maui sweetheart Raiatea Helm, who was Hawai`i’s first Grammy-nominated female vocalist for her second album, Sweet and Lovely. On her new self produced album, Hawaiian Blossoms, she’s still showcasing her clear, high voiced leo ki`eki`e style and honoring traditional Hawaiian music. The rebels from So Cal with the darling from Molokai? Sounds like an interesting night. Tickets: $35, $25. For info visit online at www.summermassive.com. [JA]
[BOOKS] My inner geek is really excited about this: The Grand Hallows Ball. For those not hip to the lingo, it’s the release of the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I’ve already got my outfit picked out (I’m going as Nymphadora Tonks) and my pick-up lines planned (Is that a wand in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?). Of course, I’ve got my book reserved. Now, all I have to do is find a Remus Lupin and some allies, in case something goes down, like a Great Snape Debate (Ahem, not evil). I’m not so much a fan of the Harry Potter series, as I am a fan of dressing up, staying up late and hanging out with hordes of equally weird people. Who says Maui doesn’t have nightlife? The end begins at 9:30 p.m. on July 20 at the Maui Marketplace, Ka`ahumanu Mall and Whaler’s Village Borders’ locations. [YNEZ TONGSON]
THURSDAY
[ECO/EDUCATION] I once did a biology project on sharks. The weekend before it was due, I went to Makena, armed with fresh, dead fish. If I didn’t have the benefit of having actually used the weeks of research we were granted, I was at least going to see a shark. So there I was, just sort of hanging out in the water. Suddenly, a dark shape sped toward me. Doom was about to happen and no one had cued the ominous music. Sure, it turned out to be a turtle, but it could’ve been a shark. I felt really stupid, but not as stupid as I do right now: if it had been shark, I could have won Shark Week’s photo contest. Now, I’m going to have to do it all over again. The Maui Ocean Center hosts Shark Week, July 22-28. Shark Week activities are included with aquarium admission, except for the “Sensational Sharks’ Sleepover” on July 27 and the Tiger Shark upgrade package. Cornbeef and Kim Chee Sunday (July 22), 7:30 p.m., at the Castle Theater, MACC [COMEDY] I can’t quite explain it, but I think that Korean comedian Kevin Shea (yeah, his adoptive parents are Irish) is hot. Like chili-pepper kim chee hot. This is weird because I don’t usually dig on Asian guys so much. Take no offense if you’re a Wang, Yamada or Cho—I had a bad experience with a half-Japanese guy when I was younger. He tore out my heart, impaled it on the tip of his surfboard and proceeded to hang-10 into the sunset. Bastard. Anywho... Kevin Shea is fricking hilarious. He’s hitting the island with fellow funnnymen Bobby Lee, Dr. Ken and Steve Byrne in their “The Kims of Comedy” tour. Oh, and by the way, these guys tend to be on the raunchy side, so unless you want your 10year-old going home simulating butt sex with a microphone, leave the kid with a sitter. You have been warned. Tickets: $37, $27. Maui Arts & Cultural Center, One Cameron Way, Kahului, 242-7469. [LILIANA BEGLEY]
DAY
Wailea 670 Time Wednesday (July 25) at 1:30 p.m. in the Maui County Council Chambers in Wailuku [LAND USE COMMITTEE HEARING] County officials clearly don’t want working people to attend this critical public hearing on Charlie Jencks’ Wailea 670 (“Honua`ula”) project and speak out about the traffic and beach congestion its 1,400 housing units and shopping center will cause or ask why Jencks insists this massive new development can subsist on a new private water well his people will sink despite the fact that previous such South Maui wells have proved to be brackish, or wonder aloud why the county is allowing a developer to replace a 110-acre native dryland forest with a golf course and sewage treatment plant. If the County Council Land Use Committee had wanted people to attend this hearing, then they would have scheduled it at a more convenient time than 1:30 in the frickin’ afternoon. The County Council Chambers are located on the 8th floor of the Kalana O Maui Building, 200 High St., Wailuku. For more information, call the Maui Tomorrow Foundation at 579-9802. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Ring of Fire Danny Boyle energizes sci-fi with a trip to the sun In a bold attempt to create a fresh update on the ever-flagging sci-fi movie genre, director Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) achieves a visually stunning cinematic poem that is as bewitching as it is infuriating for its dependence on genre cliches. A crew of eight scientists, engineers and astronauts helm the Icarus II, a massive nuclear bomb-laden craft on a last-ditch mission to reignite part of the sun to end a solar winter threatening to destroy life on Earth.
Sunshine
★★★★★ Rated R/147 min.
The year is 2057, and 16 months into the mission the male and female team get a distress beacon from the original Icarus I craft that disappeared seven years earlier. As they grapple over whether to answer the call, the crew exposes their vital task to unforeseen dangers. Sunshine is perhaps the first science fiction movie since Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey to approach that magnificent film’s vivid otherworldly dynamic. Boyle takes full advantage of state-of-the-art CGI artistry toward a narrative strategy that convinces before imploding with the arrival of a grotesque antagonist
in the third act. In the opening shot we witness the tremendous burning platinum sun as a fetish object for the ship’s Medical Officer Searle (Cliff Curtis—Whale Rider) who watches it through a large window at two percent of its brilliance as regulated by the ship’s female-voiced computer. Searle asks the mainframe to double the intensity only to learn that such brightness would blind him. Here is a man so completely seduced by the sun’s extraordinary power that his logic is irreparably impugned. Still, Searle takes a backseat to onboard physicist Capa (Cillian Murphy) and the ship’s testosterone-driven engineer Mace (Chris Evans). Capa and Mace engage in some unexplained fisticuffs on a couple of occasions that point out the screenwriter’s laziness in fleshing out relationships between the crewmembers. As the one person capable of activating the ship’s Manhattan-sized atomic payload, Capa is an emotionally aloof protagonist whose flawed judgment enables the group to divert their mission. Entrusted with charting a course that will still allow enough fuel and oxygen to deliver their explosive device, navigation officer Trey (Benedict Wong) overrides the ship’s mainframe with a miscalculation that sends the team into a desperate grab at salvaging their original intent. Internal power plays and individual crises collide when four members of the team explore the dust-covered remains of the barren Icarus I spacecraft. Echoes of Ridley Scott’s Alien prevail as the wouldbe rescuers discover an insane surviving
Should have gone at night Captain Pinbacker (Mark Strong) who has become a flesh-dripping monster intent on killing them. But it’s this problematic villainous subplot that switches the previously big idea picture into a slasher chase thriller that pollutes the simplicity that has gone before. Screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later) researched much of the hard science referenced in the film with the help of British physicist Dr. Brian Cox, but his script dents Boyle’s radical visual approach with a silly B-movie sci-fi contrivance. For as impressive as the Icarus II’s gold colored mile-wide reflective disc is for its protective reflecting power against the Sun, the introduction of a fuzzy-framed ghost man neutralizes the

poetic spell. And yet, the most egregious oversight lies in the squandering of secondary characters biologist Corazon (Michelle Yeoh) and ship’s pilot Cassie (Rose Byrne) as the film’s female repository of wisdom and potential source of sexual energy. The women function as surrogate audience members who witness, as we do, the damage that collects around the ankles of men on the brink of insanity. Nevertheless, Danny Boyle’s technical and commercial innovations in cinema are as relevant today as they were when he shook the world by the scruff of its neck with Trainspotting. He’s well on his way toward creating a masterpiece, if only he finds the right source material. MTW

What you need to know about Anuhea She’s a beautiful girl. So it’s no surprise that Anuhea, born and raised on Maui, ran for Miss Maui 2006. Consequently, she won Miss Congeniality—also not a shocker— and second runner-up to the crown. But what is surprising is the fact that she was so happy she didn’t win. “I’m not a pageant girl at all,” she said. “But I had to raise money, speak eloquently, have an opinion on issues… and I knew it would all be good for my career in the long-run.” She knows what she wants. After prep school, Anuhea got a full ride to Chapman Film School for video production. She went to school for a year but realized it wasn’t what she was passionate about. So she gave up the scholarship from the Hawai’i Association of Broadcasters and taught herself to play guitar. She’s a girl who likes challenges. Which is why, when she returned home, she said goodbye to friends and family, and moved to San Francisco. By this time, Anuhea knew she wanted to make music. But she knew nobody there and for a while, she was homeless. During the day, she worked three jobs. At night, she said she’d sometimes have to wait hours to play a few songs at an open mic somewhere. “It made me realize how small I am,” Anuhea said. “There are so many people there who do what I do, that I have to try that much harder, make a huge extra effort to be more unique. And it really comes down to being yourself.”

She’s proud of her island roots and wants to honor that. She comes from a long line of Kamehameha School alumni, and her aunty is a member of the popular contemporary Hawaiian trio, Na Leo Pilimehana. Although she doesn’t want to be limited to the Hawaiian music genre, she wants to be a part of a new generation melding the melodic traditions of her island upbringing with modern beats and influences. She loves hip-hop. Well, there was her duet with Travis McCoy of New York hiphop band (and MTV darlings), Gym Class Heroes. While she was living in San Francisco, McCoy heard her acoustic version of his track, “Viva La White Girl” and before she knew it, Anuhea was whisked off to L.A. to record the song with him. Currently, she’s recording some of her own songs with the San Francisco hiphop group, The Evolutionaries, for her debut album that will eventually be distributed by OneHawaii Music. The music deftly blends Anuhea’s soulful vocals and acoustic guitar playing, with jazzy breaks and smooth lyrical rhymes. She has a song for everything. One time, when she was in the city, her car was broken into and her laptop stolen, along with all of her promotional materials. She cried like a baby. And then she wrote the song, “Fly.” “I could drink, smoke, beat somebody up,” she said. “But writing songs is a better outlet for my emotions.” She’s on the positive freak flow. My conversation with Anuhea was peppered with references to inspirational speeches

by Nelson Mandela and excerpts from Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. Even her MySpace blog reads like an affirmation from Chicken Soup for the Anti-BeautyPageant-Turned-Songwriter Chick Soul: “I encourage you to think about your life, your goals, and realize what exactly it is that’s preventing you from achieving them. It’s probably yourself. And frankly, that’s just dumb. That idea is the inspiration for my song ‘Endlessly.’ ‘You trust that you won’t make it, ‘cause you hate to make mistakes and your life has
been nothing but struggles in this silly rat race… But on and on, endlessly you try.’ And keep trying, you! Keep focused on your goals and thinking positive. The power of the mind is amazing. (I’m telling this to myself, too...)” She plays every Tuesday, 10 p.m. at Charley’s in Paia. Meet the Intern… Ynez’s Top Five FRANKENSTEIN GIRLS WILL SEEM STRANGELY SEXY MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE Little Jimmy Urine gives you another reason to love your mom, and not just because she cooks for you. Do you remember the hyperactive kids in grade school? The ones that the teacher would always scold, try to keep still and OH GOD, DO NOT PUT THAT CATERPILLAR UP YOUR NOSE!? Well, they’ve gotten together and made a band. The album is incredibly vulgar, yet geeky—kind of how I like my guys. Then again, I’d probably like any album that allowed me to sing along to “I’ve been denied all the best ultra sex,” at the top of my lungs. —Elektra Entertainment, 2000
HAPPENSTANCE RACHAEL YAMAGATA If red wine and cigarette smoke had a lovechild, it would be Rachael Yamagata’s voice. This is the type of music that lends itself to brooding, moping and later crying outside your beloved’s window, drunk on pinot noir and memories. If I wasn’t the awesome, classy sort of girl that I am, I could totally relate to “Worn Me Down’s” theme of a significant other feeling in competition with a former someone relevant. Finally, I would love to seduce someone to “I Want You.” Too bad I probably couldn’t get the staff at McDonald’s to play it. —BMG, 2004
IN BETWEEN DREAMS JACK JOHNSON Let’s get this straight: Jack Johnson makes me happy. The day I no longer enjoy a Jack Johnson album is the day I no longer enjoy life. With that out of the way, this is perfect beach music. Jack’s style is chiller than a month of Sundays. Some of the songs are like a little ghost that keeps apologizing: hauntingly sad, but sweet. Other songs will make you want to seek out a member of your preferred gender and have them start strumming for you. But all of the songs will make you want to spend a few more moments in the sun. —Brushfire Records, 2005
THE MATING GAME BITTER:SWEET I look down the corridor, there are easily 10 men guarding the exit. I don’t know how I’m going to do this but somehow, I do. With a flying leap, I dodge bullets and kick down the door. Outside, my getaway car waits. The driver looks like Brad Pitt and sounds like Antonio Banderas. He offers me a margarita. Before we can kiss, the building behind us explodes… I’ve got scenarios for most of the songs on this album—I like it that much. That blurb was brought to you by “Dirty Laundry.” Stop raising that eyebrow: I know most of you entertain these little daydreams. —Quango, 2006

ROBBERS & COWARDS COLD WAR KIDS I looked at this list and realized these albums aren’t incredibly recent. Now, I don’t want to seem like a “square” to all the “hip, young things.” You might be familiar with Cold War Kids’ “Hang Me Up to Dry,” being played on “The X” or whatever it’s calling itself now. This is the music that plays in the background while you’re shimmying into your yoga pants, running out the door with a cup of tea and wondering what the hell you did last night. Unless the song that’s playing is “We Used to Vacation.” Then, you’ve got a problem. —Downtown Records, 2006 MTW

This legendary rock, blues and country guitarist and singer/songwriter wrote the hits “Southern Cross,” “Love the One You’re With” and “Everybody’s Talkin At Me,” which, no lie, I had stuck in my head for seven straight days one time. I’m OK with that, because Stills, who worked with legends like Buffalo Springfield and was buddies with Jimi Hendrix, is responsible for some of rock and roll’s greatest moments. Plus, it was an awesome song.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) The worst thing that could happen right now is if you accepted your necessarily narrow and limited view of reality as the big picture. In that scenario, you’d probably feel that you had few or no choices, instead of recalling that the world is in fact rife with possibility. There are so many things you could do, so many different facets of life you could access. You might simply have to practice first remembering that they exist, then open yourself to them. This week, please make that your number one goal and pursue it diligently and relentlessly.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Screw multitasking. You’re so busy thinking about all the shit you have to do that you only devote half your attention to the task currently at hand. In other words, your performance sucks, at least compared to how fantastic it would be if you devoted yourself to it completely. The key: don’t allow yourself to be distracted by all those other things you’ll need to get to, eventually, nor by the many pure diversions that could derail you completely if you’re not careful. Do one thing at a time, and nothing else. Not only will you finish it, and well, but also in record time—freeing you to move on to the second thing (but don’t even think about the third until that one’s done, please).
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) What would you tell someone whose plan to lose weight involves eliminating cheesecake, and nothing else? Darling, that’s what I’m here to do for you. Your goal may have nothing to do with losing weight; nevertheless your approach is about as realistic as the No Cheesecake Diet. It’s sad that you’re entertaining such preposterous illusions; you’re usually so accomplished and down-to-earth. Where’s your hard-nosed realism now? You need a dose of it. Wake up and figure out what you really need to do, to get the job done. Otherwise, you’re just missing out on delicious cheesecake for no reason.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Stop biting your tongue. If you’ve got an opinion, by all means share it. Your famous open-mindedness often translates into blandness, because you rarely appear to have strong feelings in any particular direction. Now, I know that’s not true. Although you rock at seeing both sides of any equation, there are times when you are solidly on one side of the fence or the other, instead of straddling it. Speak up, baby, and now. The folks you want to impress are so bored by wallflowers and flip-floppers that they might not give you a second chance.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I’m mostly annoyed by that cliché about new doors opening when old ones get slammed in your face. That old saw’s stuck around so long, however, because there’s truth in it. That relationship or opportunity that slipped through your fingers was not perfect for you, even though you probably thought it was. There are a million new possibilities before you, even though they might not be immediately visible. Part of the problem is you’re not exactly looking for them. Even right in front of your nose, you might not see them, because you’re blinded by disappointment. You don’t have to get over that disappointment, not yet. But can you at least try to look past it?
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Sometimes you just have to bite your tongue. When your friend hooks up with someone you dislike (or despise), watch how you express your disapproval. That can quickly spiral downwards into a lose-lose situation, if you’re not careful. On the one hand, you wouldn’t be a good friend if you didn’t put in your honest two cents. On the other, don’t you dare put in three. It’s your job to stop them from making any huge mistakes, even if it means risking your friendship. But letting your buddy make a bunch of smaller mistakes, and learn a lesson the hard way (which sticks) might ultimately be the kindest thing you can do.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You Caps can be a little bit clueless about certain social situations. Sometimes you’re not aware that you’ve crossed a line until long after you stepped over it, and been slapped for doing so. To you, some of those lines are just plain invisible. There are ways around these limitations, though. Heck, even some autistic people, who have trouble interpreting ambiguous social cues (like facial expressions, for instance) find ways to navigate the world nevertheless. This week, you ought to be especially good at recognizing your own blind spots. Luckily, you’ll be even better at inventing ways to work around them.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Next week’s Full Moon in your sign is a brilliant time to try to bring some project, idea or personal goal to fruition and fulfillment. I know it’s short notice, but I think it’s still possible to get your shit together, if you try. See that mile marker up ahead? The one you’ve been headed towards for a while now? Accelerate. Pedal to the metal, baby. See if you can reach it before the moon is fat, bright and round. If you succeed, the light it sheds is likely to make the route beyond that intermediary goal incredibly, excitingly clear.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) One thing I like about you Fish is that you don’t usually have contempt for people who are simple, even though you yourself are eminently complex. In fact, sometimes I think you envy anyone who can be single-minded about anything, because that’s something you’re not generally good at. There are times, however, when you might be able to put on blinders and devote most, if not all, of your attention and energy towards a single goal. This week is one of those rare, lucky occasions. Pick an ambitious target, block out everything else, and go for it.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Rain hangs heavy overhead. Poke a hole in the clouds and they’d explode, drenching all of us. You shouldn’t stay inside, though. The threat of downpour is worse than the reality. What’s holding you back is this illusion that if you don’t shake things up, the rain might not fall, or it might float on to fall on some other place, someone else’s life. Forget that. Expect to get wet. Know that you’ll be drenched to the bone, and shivering. You’ll also get to where you want to go, which ultimately outweighs all other considerations. Here’s your choice: stay inside, dry, and go nowhere, or endure a little misery and discomfort, but reach your destination.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Bodies have their own equilibrium. Studies show that it’s extremely hard to change the point at which your body is comfortable, when it comes to weight. It takes profound discipline and a lot more time than most people are willing to give it, to truly change the shape of your body. A lot of things take more time than you’d expect, and unless you really commit to them, for the long haul, you’ll never get anything but ongoing disappointment out of them. If you’re going to do something half-assed, you might as well spare yourself the trouble and not bother at all.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Don’t be shortsighted. I know part of this is actually a good thing, a desire to be present. But sometimes you fail to look far enough ahead to accurately gauge how you’ll feel a month from now, a year, a decade. Of course, knowing the future is impossible, but you could stand to do a bit more guessing about it. For example: Is the person you’re with someone you’ll still like in a year, or 10, or 50? How’s your job (or the prospects it enables) going to suit you in a decade? It’s time for some projections. Send your imagination into the future and see what you can see. Then, when it gets back, it’s time to act on what you saw there.

Time’s fun when you’re having flies. – Kermit the Frog
1. A big, long thank you letter to Maui with specific shout-outs to all the friends, fans and acquaintances made during my tenure as HG columnista. 2. Divulge all my secrets. Clean out my closet. Make a final, shocking revelation. (Um, yeah… what’s left? That I’m actually a 54-year-old man who lives in Trenton, New Jersey? Oh, oops…) 3. My own Eh Brah: the frustrations I’ve experienced not only with writing this column but also with covering “nightlife” on an island with irrational, superfluous rules and regulations mixed with the depressing apathy of its inhabitants, and the resultant ridiculous expense of going out at night, and the not having of live shows of contemporary mainland artists. 4. Print my photo.

5. TIE: Best moments in HG history. Or my so-called Valedictorian speech. Top Five Reasons Why I’m Starting to Get Excited About the Move to SF 1. Late-night taquerias in the Mission. 2. The presence of an independent bookstore and a female-run peep show on the same block. 3. Si*Se, Bitter:Sweet and Colin Hay, all live at the Independent the first week I’m there. 4. Getting a proper Bloody Mary at Club Deluxe, martini at Gold Cane and pitcher of beer at Zeitgeist. 5. My future rockstar day job. Top Five Reasons This Week Why I’m Sad to Go 1. Driving down the one-lane highway from my place in Haiku or Pukalani or Lahaina, admiring the gorgeous shoreline and—although diminishing, still present—expanses of green land (or charred land, if on the Westside) and sugar cane fields, drinking strong Kona coffee, arriving to work in my low lit, red-curtained office piled high with books and CDs sent by publicists in need, checking out my full calendar and setting priorities for the day, checking my emails and answering quests and invites, wondering which awesome local musician or artist or sandcastle builder to write about next, then deciding to write about the culture of bilingual porn in my column instead… 2. The bartender chicks at David Paul’s. (And that ridiculously delectable light coffee-Cabernet demi-glace on the rack of lamb. Oh, and the Triple Berry Pie.) The hot chef at Spago Wailea. (And anything he wants to cook up and hand-deliver… uh, to my table. Geez, people!) The Taste of Chocolate at Wailea Film Festival. Sushi and weird whiskey at Hirohachi. The wooden nickels at Sly Mongoose. And, of course, the old-school (I did NOT say “old”) regulars there. Drinking $150 bottles of wine on the beach at sunset. Eating mangoes from the backyard over the sink. 3. Hana. 4. The Boyfriend. And his calling me “cupcake” ‘cause that’s what his grandpa called his grandma. The friends—or, at least, the ones who are still talking to me. Maybe even the friends who aren’t still talking to me (okay, especially them). The ex-boyfriends (but only a little). The co-workers. The former co-workers. All the musicians, chefs, artists, writers and DJs I’ve crushed on over the past 10 years. The beautiful bohemian buttheads who shop at Mana. The tall, dark and handsome suits who take breaks at Café Marc Aurel. People who speak “bank” aloha. Anyone who’s smiled at me and really, truly meant it. 5. You. Most of all. Samantha Campos spends too much time reading the graffiti in public restrooms. MTW
