LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR RAY AREA Thanks to Rob Parsons for another great report on solar and alternative energy [“The energy doctor,” August 28]. It’s astounding how even in a place like this where sun is more abundant than tourists we rely on old, outdated methods to power our towns. Where is the vision? Every home on Maui should be powered with solar, wind, water or some other renewable method. We can get there, we just need the vision. Jay Burke, Kahului

IS THERE A MECO IN HERE? Do people on Maui realize that Maui Electric is the reason we pay the highest electric costs in the nation, by far? Thanks goodness for the Rob Report, and people like Steve Blake who are showing us better community solutions, not just corporate greenwash. Dennis in Wailuku, submitted online at mauitime.com

LAST REEF LETTER, WE PROMISE I wanted to thank Mr. Wintner for his reply to my Rob Report Rebuttal and for finally squelching the debate [“Reef madness,” July 24]. If he truly believes that aquarium collectors, which represent 4 percent of the commercial fisherman in the state, are “killing tourism and the reef” all in one fell swoop, then there really is no reply to such hyperbole. Darrel Smith, Kihei

our town and trade them for some stupid outcroppings? Seriously, who the fuck makes these kinds of decisions? Is it the same KOOK who plans a 12-mile stretch of highway that takes seven years to build? I’ve lived here over five years now, and the one thing that constantly amazes me it the ASTOUNDING level of stupidity apparent in the decisions affecting the public. Does it take more than a five-year-old’s ability to reason to understand that we ought not build things that we can’t support? Can anyone say “Wailea 670”? Well, if there’s anyone reading this who’s involved in the decisions affecting Wailuku, perhaps that person can explain to me how what’s happening to the parking on Market St. makes any sense when those of us working here already have to contend with moving our cars every two hours. Talk about a surefire way to attract new business. I know, give your employees expensive parking tickets on a regular basis...yeah, that will do it! Fed Up, Wailuku

PET UNFRIENDLY SKIES Re: Your story on dog-friendly Maui resorts [“Paws-pitality,” August 28]: This is great for dogs already on another island and you’re just island hopping, but since ATA went out of business there are no airlines allowing pets in-cabin, so there won’t be any mainland dogs—unless you want to stuff them in cargo for six hours of hell. Jason, submitted online at mauitime.com

WISH WE COULD NOT A BRANDO FAN Hey I usually love your Eh Brah! illustrations, but what was up with that one from last week? Who were the dudes with the cat and what did they have to do with anything? Also, while I’m on the subject, leaving a horse head in a cooler is some crazy messed up shit. Who the hell did that? Uri Erstad, Kihei Ed. Note: The illustration was a nod to The Godfather, which contains a famous scene featuring a severed horse head.

TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS OK, I’ve seen the column praising Officer Taguma’s dedication, and I can see both arguments. BUT, regardless of whether Wailuku does possess its own traffic Nazi, what I want to know is who’s the “Einstein” that decided it would be smart to eradicate a few more of the already scarce parking places in

Right on Maui Time! Open up that can of worms! Thank you for writing about something that I care about, that all we who live here care about and doing so in such a way as to tell it with Truth, Honesty and Righteousness! Please though, give us more on this essential subject. You are our only link. Long Timer, Wailuku Ed. Note: Thanks for the kind words, Long Timer. We’d love to help, but you’ve got to give us a bit more info. To which story and subject are you referring?

CANDIDATE FILES

Primary Pointer:

County Council

Though we’re profiling ever y state and county candidate before the primary election, not ever y race will see “action” on Sept. 20. County Council races with three or more candidates will be pared down to two; state races are partisan, so Democrats battle Democrats to face the Republican challenger, if there is one, in November.

(Makawao-Haiku-Paia) (Incumbent) NAME: Mike Molina AGE: 48 YEARS ON MAUI: Born in Wailuku CURRENT PROFESSION: County Councilmember EXPERIENCE: Air Force, Hawaii Air National Guard, teacher PRESIDENTIAL ENDORSEMENT: Decline to state KEY DISTRICT ISSUES: TVRs Says he is “open to regulating this industry so long as a process is put in place that respects the input of neighboring residents and that TVR owners pay their fair share of taxes.” Advocates “scrutiny” of TVRs on Ag zoned land... WATER “I will support funding to upgrade our transmission lines to improve water quality and service, additional water storage, and finding additional sources of water.” KEY MAUI ISSUES: ECONOMY Advocates “aggressively marketing local agriculture and Maui made products” and creating “vacation packages that attract neighbor island residents.”… HOUSING Touts his support for a four-point plan that involves low-interest county loans, an affordable housing fund, workforce housing and rental assistance.

(Challenger) NAME: Kahekai “Kai” Nishiki YEARS ON MAUI: Born on island, 1971 CURRENT PROFESSION: Business owner, mother EXPERIENCE: Legislative aide KEY DISTRICT/MAUI ISSUES: HOUSING Advocates using local labor to build affordable units, creating a “centralized affordable housing list maintained by the county.” Calls for homes built to be outfitted with solar panels and other alternative energy systems… WATER “Privatization, contamination, and wasteful water practices threaten our water resources. I support equitable distribution of water with in-stream flow restoration and kuleana users as a priority.”… TVRs “I would include vacation rentals in the category of home-based businesses provided the owner is a Maui resident who pays resident income tax. I do not support absentee TVRs owned by offshore speculators who drive our home prices up.” NOTE: Information on Nishiki taken from her campaign Web site.

House 12th District (Upcountry) (Incumbent) NAME: Kyle Yamashita (D) AGE: 49 CURRENT PROFESSION: State legislator EXPERIENCE: Business owner PRESIDENTIAL ENDORSEMENT: Obama KEY DISTRICT ISSUES: AGRICULTURE Calls for improvements to irrigation systems, supports “Important Ag Lands” policy; has “supported bills to provide financial assistance for farmers, including loans for photovoltaic energy and wind power generation projects.” SUSTAINABILITY Cites alternative energy, recycling programs as important, also wants to “be more aggressive in the fight against invasive species.” KEY MAUI ISSUES: HEALTHCARE Calls for a review of the Certificate of Need process, better reimbursements for hospitals, physicians TRANSPORTATION “This should not come at the expense of our environmental health, but we need to be open and innovative to ways in which we can encourage access to and from Maui.” NOTE: The winner of the primary will face Republican Eugene “Mickey” Vierra, who did not respond to requests for input by the deadline.

8 Election ‘0

Maui Votes

The activist candidate County Council hopeful Lucienne DeNaie has grown from grassroots hange: we all seem to want it, but election results often reveal that the opposite is true. In some cases it’s the elected officials who, forgetful of campaign love poems, change little more than their business card inscriptions once in office. Then again, sometimes it’s the voters who, fearing the unknown, embrace the status quo regardless of how much it hurts them.

C

for the last ten years or so through various groups that I’m involved with,” she said. “I, for one, have paid attention to some of our municipal facilities, like our wastewater plants and our water treatment plants…things that people don’t think about.” She said she pointed out a developer’s apparent attempt to set aside “protected” land that was already barred from development to a councilmember

energy, DeNaie said her familiarity with alternative energy would be key in the coming years, as Maui attempts to wean itself off of imported fuels. “When someone comes up and talks about…net metering or leasing rooftops for solar energy, I’m going to know what they’re talking about,” she said. The coming years may be challenging, she said, but with the right people

“I’m the typical citizen who isn’t satisfied. An activist cuts through the B.S.” This year’s election will cut through the flashy, buzz word-laden banners and show us whether we have the guts to embrace real change. And you don’t have to look further than the local ballot to find candidates who shatter the mold. East Maui County Council seat contender Lucienne DeNaie is one such candidate. Currently chairperson of the Hawaii state chapter of the Sierra Club, De Naie’s background varies greatly from that of a typical political candidate. Unlike politicians who are groomed to hold office, DeNaie is seeking office from the other direction: activism. “I’m just a grass roots person. I’m the typical citizen who isn’t satisfied with the level of service that government is [giving us],” DeNaie said. “An activist cuts through the B.S.” DeNaie ran for the same seat in 2006, but came up 324 votes short in the four-candidate primary for this non-partisan seat. This year there she won’t be on the primary ballot, but instead will go straight through to face incumbent Bill Medeiros in November. While DeNaie is relatively new to the election side of things, she is a veteran when it comes to Maui County politics. She has offered her expertise and incredible attention to detail on a variety of environmental issues on Maui, especially those pertaining to planning. “I’ve been in court on water issues

at a recent community meeting. “Some of the decisions that are made by the council, they are not given the complete information; they are given the convenient version that benefits some who can make a lot of money,” DeNaie said. “You get good government when people get in there, are willing to listen to people, and are willing to dig out the facts and not just take the easy answers.” DeNaie’s biggest challenge in winning the East Maui seat might be the fact that, unlike her opponent, she wasn’t born on Maui. Yet she has lived on-island full time for 23 years and has been a vocal advocate for environmental conservation, cultural preservation and other kanaka maoli values. “I might have to work harder because I’m not from here to learn about some of the things that a person who was born and raised here may know about,” said DeNaie. “On the other hand, when is it bad to have a public servant want to work harder to hear from you?” Having worked with the Sierra Club on getting the state to pass legislation pertaining to renewable

asking the right questions, anything can be achieved. “It’s really an exciting time ahead,” DeNaie said of the coming shift toward sustainability. “It’s scary when things get shaky, and when the old system doesn’t work as the status

said that she believes green tech jobs can help fill some of the holes in the local job market. “We’re going to need some tech solutions and we’re going to need some social engineering,” DeNaie said. “We need to retrain folks for the job market that clean, green energy jobs could create.” The relationship between environment and economy seems to play heavily into DeNaie’s politics, but she says her environmental advocacy won’t keep her from listening to all sides of an issue. “As a person who is setting policy and creating laws…I like to listen to both sides,” she said. “I like to look at what the merit is to both sides.” MTW

quo, there’s your chance to really bring in the new and create opportunities that didn’t exist before.” DeNaie sees economic opportunity as a major issue for her district and

MAUICOUNTY

BY JACOB SHAFER JACOB@MAUITIME.COM

The business end A look at the week’s economic winners and losers… Another dispatch from the broken record department: The most recent tourism-related figures for Hawaii are bleak. Contrasted against last year’s numbers, hotel occupancy fell nearly 3 percent statewide, as reported in The Pacific Business News. That average was actually buoyed by a 3 percent uptick on Oahu but dragged down by a 10.5 percent drop on Maui, which boasted (if that’s the right word) the largest decline of any island (Kauai fell 9.4 percent, the Big Island 4.4 percent). To venture an explanation: It’s not that Oahu suddenly became 13.5 percent (or whatever) more desirable than Maui; it’s that with airfares skyrocketing, people are taking the cheapest direct flights they can find (to Honolulu) and are staying put, rather than springing for that final, budget-busting inter-island ride.

Though hotels and other hospitality-centric outfits feel it first, the visitor slowdown isn’t just hitting the private sector. Addressing the issue in front of the Hawaii Economic Association on Oahu, Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares said decreased revenue from hotel guest taxes and other tourism-linked sources will force governmental belt tightening. PBN reports that Tavares has lobbied the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Visitors and Convention Bureau to more aggressively advertise the Valley Isle in Canada and Japan, while at the same time pushing Japanese airlines to implement direct routes from Tokyo to Maui. The arrow’s pointing up for folks on Molokai’s west side who’ll enjoy uninterrupted water service for the foreseeable future. Molokai Properties announced that rate increases authorized by the Public Utilities Commission will be enough to keep their operation afloat, at least for the time being, avoiding a potentially messy standoff involving the county and other entities that threatened to leave some residents on Maui’s neighbor island high and dry. On the other hand, affected Molokaians might see bigger bills during an already dicey economic period as more of an arrow pointing down kind of thing. It’s the classic glass half empty vs. glass half full quandary—but here the real key is just that there’s some water in the glass.

A handful of businesses located on state-owned property near the Kahului Airport got eviction notices this week, as reported in The Maui News. The spot is to be converted into an expanse of rental car operations, which will require an environmental assessment— meaning the area has to be vacated by year’s end. The state is within its rights to make the move, but many of the businesses in question—some of them longtime local establishments—are already struggling; giving them six months to pack up and get out will in all likelihood have the same effect as bulldozing them tomorrow. ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

Bee aware Organic farmer, beekeeper to give series of public talks hen Vincent Mina found a colony of honeybees had taken up residence in the water meter box of his Wailuku home, he had no idea it would lead to a serendipitous meeting of the minds. Mina, an organic farmer with Kahanu `Aina Farms, called beekeeper Dennis Morihiro to remove the swarm of bees. The discussions that ensued led them to embark on a series of educational presentations on the relationship of honeybees to the environment, and vice versa. Mina is inquisitive by nature and has a history of sharing vital information with the community. He is the founder and head of the non-profit Maui Aloha `Aina Association (MA`A), a sustainable farming organization that has sponsored the Body & Soil Conference yearly since 2001. The annual event brings in nationally renowned experts on soil science, nutrition, gardening and related topics. Mina energetically advocates that healthy soil and farming practices lead to nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables, which in turn bring about health and vitality to those who choose to eat well. Talking with Morihiro, who has managed Tropical Apiary Products of Maui for more than 25 years, Mina quickly saw

Morihiro showed up, donned his protective suit and plugged in a homemade vacuum. I recalled that he first puffed some smoke into the small hole in the exterior wall, using a bellows-like device. This served to stun or sedate the bees. I asked him what he used to smoke the bees before collecting them. “I use pine needles, macadamia nut hulls, dry grass, eucalyptus chips,” said Morihiro, “whatever I have. The smoke confuses the bees because they depend on their sense of smell. “Inside the hive is dark,” he continued, “so everything is smell and touch. The queen gives off pheromones to keep the workers committed to their tasks. If she starts to give off less pheromones, the workers start to make ‘queen cells’ to raise a new queen.” Morihiro explains that a queen can live from two to three years, while worker bees have an average life cycle of only 39 days. When a queen gets older, scout bees will go out and find another location for a hive. The old queen won’t move on until a new queen has mated, and then she can lead as many as 10,000-20,000 bees to swarm to a new location. “They need a dry location,” he said, “where they can regulate the tempera-

Moreover, Morihiro told Mina that when he brought his observations to government leaders, they often fell upon deaf ears. I sat with Morihiro and Mina at a table in Border’s, with afternoon coffee in front of us. Morihiro, wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with “Keep the Hive Alive” in yellow and black letters, shared half of his toasted bagel with me and we began to chat about his beekeeping business. I reminded him that I had found him in the yellow pages some 20 years ago, when a swarm of honeybees took up residence in the kitchen wall of the century old home I lived in, behind the Makawao library. We called Morihiro to come relocate the colony, as poisoning wasn’t a viable option for us.

For three days the larvae are fed nothing but royal jelly by the nurse bees.” Morihiro said that if not enough pollen is collected to make the larval food, “Then the nurse bees start to cannibalize the larvae to keep the hive alive.” orihiro has hundreds of hives in various locations on Maui, and has carefully witnessed changes in nature that have altered the viability of his bee colonies. In the early 1980s, he kept 300 hives in the Waiehu region, around the time when Wailuku Sugar planted their acreage in young macadamia nut trees and hundreds of acres were cleared for the Waiehu Heights subdivision. With natural windbreaks cleared for housing, the trade winds took their toll on the upslope regions. Soon, half of

few isolated brown spots in the hills above Waiehu have grown into a large region, all the way up to the cloud line where tree trunks can now be seen where once a green forest canopy existed. “Trees break up the wind into eddies like pebbles in a stream,” said Morihiro. “Too many rooftops means the wind comes in unabated. More windbreaks are what’s needed.” Morihiro believes that the changes in the 2-mile strip stretching along Maui’s windward coast from Waiehu to Hana are critical to the climate on the rest of the island. As ecosystems and microclimates are altered, there are corresponding changes in neighboring vegetation, insect populations and diversity of flowering plants for bee foraging. He related that dandelions and nut weed are all but gone in the Wailuku area and that nonnative insects and diseases have ravaged

both the wiliwili and rose apple trees. Where there used to be a spring, summer and fall honey flow in the Waiehu region, Morihiro is now only able to extract honey in the fall. He related that he used to start raising queens in March but now has to wait until May. Only 30 of 700 queens that he raised last year successfully mated. “The bee is totally dependent upon the environment,” Morihiro said. “They are totally dependent upon the nectar and honey. Bees can’t improve the environment, they can only maintain what is failing.” n a sense, they are a canary in the coalmine, Mina said. He believes that bees need biodiversity to be successful, as kiawe nectar alone, for instance, is not nutritionally sufficient for the bees to thrive. Worldwide, honeybees are facing a mysterious malady called Colony Collapse Disorder. Leading suspects include: cellular telephone proliferation, which may affect bees’ navigational abilities; genetically modified crops, which could alter bees’ nutritional sources in yet undetermined ways; and pesticides. The disorder has had widespread impacts on the Western honeybee across Europe and North America and possible cases have also been reported in Taiwan. In Hawaii, the discovery of the varroa mite in an Oahu bee colony sent shockwaves across the state. In Cheryl Ambrozic’s 2007 cover story for Maui Time Weekly, “To Bee, or Not to Bee,”

A bee must visit 250,000 flowers to make 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey. Morihiro exclaimed, “Looks like we’re screwed.” The parasitic mites, about the size of a pinhead, can weaken adult bees and also attack larvae. As the mites have a 10 day reproductive cycle, and the bees have no instinctive grooming behavior to repel them, an infested colony rapidly leads to the death of the hive. Many raised the concern that the Hawaii Superferry could transport an infected bee from Oahu to Maui, and the varroa mite infestation could quickly endanger honeybees island-wide. Inspections have turned up hundreds of bees on car radiators, both dead and alive. To date, Maui has avoided the unwanted arrival of this tiny, destructive arachnid. But the Big Island has not been so fortunate. Two weeks ago, West Hawaii Today reported that Department of Agriculture (DOA) traps detected varroa mites on bees caught near the Hilo Seaside Hotel. Rapid response has been deployed, with DOA setting more traps, sampling commercial and feral hives, distributing miticides to place in infected colonies and asking the public’s help in identifying feral hives within a 5-mile radius so they can be destroyed. Morihiro is skeptical—and concerned. “You can’t search a 5-mile radius, no way,” he said. “They’re not going to find all the feral colonies, which could be in a tree, a building, a crack in the lava, anywhere.” The Big Island is the state’s leading producer of honey, with an annual production of about 1 million pounds. Morihiro’s knowledge of his trade is fascinating. He says that a bee only col-

lects pollen and honey in the last two weeks of its 39-day life cycle. A quarter million flowers must be visited to produce just a 12th of a teaspoon of honey. Bees will sometimes bring pine sap to the hive to make propolis, because of its anti-fungal properties. Mina and MA`A are bringing Morihiro’s wisdom to four venues over the next month, sharing his knowledge with Maui’s community. These unique educational opportunities should allow for a healthy, vital cross-pollination of ideas and actions. MTW “Bee Aware” talks will be given from 6-8pm on the following dates: Friday, Sept. 12: MECO auditorium, Kahului Thursday, Sept. 18: Kamehameha Schools, Pukalani Thursday, Sept. 25: Kihei Charter School auditorium Wednesday, Oct. 1: Haiku, location TBA Last three venues to be confirmed; for more info, call 242-7870, or visit: http://www.mauigrown.org

And here I’m sitting behind you watching you flick your ashes out the window for a couple of minutes and just praying that you don’t toss the butt still burning, but no you don’t disappoint anyone, you just let it go and take a few years off my life due to the rage of you being such a jackass. Not only are you using Maui as your personal ashtray, but the reason we are in this traffic jam is probably due to some other asshole dumping their lit butt out the window. The only reason I didn’t get out and share my opinion with you is that I was in a County of Maui truck. Keep your butts in your mini van.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD HAIR MARKET VALUE “What was once a gentleman’s hobby among a few dozen enthusiasts at the turn of the 20th century,” wrote The New York Times in July, “has evolved into a multimilliondollar industry,” namely, collecting strands of hair of famous people. Mastro Auctions of Chicago sells $100,000 worth of hair a year, and in October, a tuft of Che Guevara’s went for $119,500 (and John Lennon’s recently for $48,000). Westport, Conn., Americana dealer John Reznikoff (who owns strands of Lincoln, Washington, Napoleon and Beethoven) appraised Britney Spears’ locks (after her 2007 headshaving) at “only” $3,500. Reznikoff told the Times that, while he advertises his trade in books and autographs, the hair is low-key: “I’m concerned clients might not take me seriously if they see me selling a lock of Charles Dickens’s hair.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR As Denton, Texas, Pizza Patron employee Stephanie Martinez complied with a disguised robber’s demand for money at closing in July, a co-worker jumped the man, knocked him down, and began beating on him. As the robber’s sunglasses and wig fell off, Martinez recognized him: “Don’t hit him again! That’s my dad!” Police later charged Stephanie’s father, mother and husband with the attempted robbery, concluding that Stephanie had been kept completely in the dark about the heist.

FORECLOSING FRODO Among the losers in the recent housing crash was The Shire in Bend, Ore., which was to be a village of 31 homes in the style of those in The Lord of the Rings series, with (according to a report in the Bend Bulletin) “unique stonework, artificial thatched roofs, terraces, gardens, and a network of streams and ponds with a pathway to... ‘The Ring Bearer’s Court.’” One of the only two houses completed has a “hobbit hole” for storing garden supplies. Developer Ron Meyers said he hopes the new owner will respect the concept.

BOARD STIFF Greg Nance, 49, resigned from the state Board of Education in August after complaints about his ignoring a policy discussion at a public meeting by cooing with his new, 20-year-old wife of 12 days. (When a colleague complained that

Paper made from Hemp lasts longer than paper made from trees, up to 100 years without turning brown.

the woman should not have been seated with Nance at the board table, Nance replied, “Bite me.”) Nance’s replacement will be named by Gov. Jim Gibbons, whose approval rating hovers in the 20 percent range, in part because of rumors of womanizing. Gibbons filed for divorce in May, but his wife of 22 years has refused to leave the governor’s mansion, and, instead, Gibbons has moved out.

BLOND AMBITION Former British glamour model Jayne Bennington, 31, says she spends the equivalent of $600 a month on treatments and frills to make her daughter Sasha, 11, into the beauty queen she almost was herself, according to a July profile in London’s Daily Mail. However, Mom has done such a good job that Sasha can’t get work because she no longer looks like a child. Asked her selfassessment by a BBC documentary crew, Sasha responded, “Blond, pretty, dumb (but) I don’t need brains.” (At that, Mom roared with laughter.)

CRIME PAYS Kenneth Moore, 49, admitted that he was the one who shot his friend Darrel Benner to death in 1995 during a beer-drinking binge, in front of two witnesses, in Piketon, Ohio, but an appeals court later ruled that he was entitled to a new trial because prosecutors had withheld evidence. At a new trial, with memories failing, Moore was found not guilty. State law thus calls Moore’s nine-plus years served “wrongful imprisonment,” entitling him to compensation, and in July the Ohio Court of Claims approved a payment of more than $500,000 (plus legal fees) for Moore’s having pulled the trigger that night.

SECURING HIS ASSETS Insurance companies, especially in Europe, seem game for underwriting almost any odd risk anyone is willing to pay for, and thus News of the Weird has reported on people insured against alien invasion, the Loch Ness monster, and, for three Scottish nuns, the expense of Jesus Christ’s second coming if he were born to any of them. The bedding company SilentNight in Lancashire, England, recently insured mattresstester Graham Butterfield’s buttocks for the equivalent of about $2 million, finding that particular part of his body to be so sensitive to tiny variations in fillings that he knows, quickly and certainly, if the proper materials have been used. COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27

BY JACOB SHAFER JACOB@MAUITIME.COM

chomped a big chunk out of the corner, perhaps mistaking it for a strange flattened piece of fruit. Meanwhile, the sun glistened brightly off Kama’s decal. Does all this mean anything, other than maybe I should scale back my AM coffee intake? I leave it to you.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 29 There are a few ways to look at the Sarah Palin pick. The first, and most obvious, is that this will now be a historic election no matter what the outcome—we’ll get either the first nonCaucasian president or the first female vice president. Political ideology and questions of competence aside, that’s pretty cool. Choosing Palin also solidifies McCain’s reputation as a risk taker. I read an article a few months ago about the two candidates’ respective gambling habits; Obama is apparently a poker man while McCain favors craps. Picking as your number two a greenhorn moose hunting former beauty queen definitely qualifies as rolling the dice. Finally, it’s interesting to note how Obama and McCain’s respective veep choices reflect a weird attempt to sort of mirror the other man: Obama taps a tough-talking, white-haired senior senator with solid foreign policy credentials; McCain goes with an inexperienced, fresh-faced, outside-the-box political minority. Now all that said, and I could be wrong, I smell Dan Quayle 2.0. Has anybody asked her if she knows how to spell potato?

Well this is an interesting one. Taking the NIMBY (not in my backyard) philosophy and turning it on its head, Maui developer Peter Martin is trying to build a kind of low-income campground literally in his backyard, on a 5-acre piece of undeveloped land in Spreckelsville. Martin explained his proposal at a recent Planning Commission meeting and encountered predictable resistance from residents who fear the place could become a haven for undesirables. On the one hand, it’s tough to blame folks for being cautious; homeless encampments often are hotbeds of shady activity. On the other hand, here’s someone who seems to genuinely want to lend a helping hand—to reach out to the needy in a time of great need when not everyone fighting to stay above the poverty line is a mentally ill drug addict—and is willing to finance and take full responsibility for the operation. Should we be standing in his way, or awarding him a medal? The Commission delayed any decision until its next meeting, September 9. We’ll be there.

Last week I discussed the deal Hawaii struck with Hart InterCivic for use of the company’s voting machines and how Hart was the target of a lawsuit alleging fraudulent shenanigans back in 2002. Since then I spoke briefly with Scott Nago in the state office of elections, who informed me that the deal, which had previously been a long-term engagement, is now only for this year. Going forward, Hart will have to re-bid. That’s good for the future, but questions still swirl around this important election and the reliability of the machines that will be tabulating the results.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28

SUNDAY, AUGUST 31

I’ll admit it: I’m a sucker for symbolism and tend to find poignant metaphors where (arguably) none exist. It’s the sappy Victorian novelist in me. But this one was pretty glaring: On my walk to work this morning, I passed a Tasha Kama sign posted by the side of the road. On the ground underneath it was one of those “Re-elect Joe Souki” sponges that his supporters have been passing out door-to-door (mine’s currently under the sink; thanks Joe). It was all wilted and shriveled and some creature had

Went down to Kihei for some sun and surf and I know I’m totally stating the obvious and that the Tourism Authority’s numbers have shown this like a million different ways, but man—there aren’t very many tourists. At all. The streets were quiet, the restaurants sat empty, the beaches were bare. You could say the September slowdown started a day early, but for things to slow down they had to be going fast at one point. Still, it was an absolutely gorgeous day in paradise, so there’s always that.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30

Hey look, Dan Quayle’s back...in sexy librarian form.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 Roz Savage just rowed in and boy her arms are tired! (Ba, dum, dum…cha!) But seriously folks, wow. Ninety-nine days and 2,900 miles later, Savage—who’s trying to become the first woman to singlehandedly (well, double-handedly, but you know what I mean) row across the Pacific—landed on Oahu, completing the first and longest leg of her oceanic odyssey. I was in the Bay Area back in May when Savage departed from underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and I’m not one to toot my own horn…but I totally got here first, Roz.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 Last year around this time, there was speculation in these and other pages that if McCain became the Republican nominee, he might tap Governor Lingle as his VP. That, of course, didn’t materialize—but Lingle has managed to land a role at the convention in Minnesota. Hawaii’s top executive, The Honolulu Advertiser reports, has been deployed at the GOP confab to spread the good word about Palin. Lingle told reporters she was uniquely qualified to tout the credentials of the

Alaskan governor, “because I’m one of the only people who has traveled her road.” (There’s a cheap joke in there that we’re going to stay miles away from.) In addition to praising Palin, Lingle took a few shots at the guys on the other side, saying of Obama and Biden, “They haven’t been the mayor of a midsized city, big city, small city, red, blue, any city. They’ve never been the mayor, either of them. They’ve never been a governor.” That’s true Linda. On the other hand, what they have been is U.S. Senators. In fact, Biden became a senator (which does, historically, qualify one to be president) when Palin was 11 years old. But hey, you retort, Barack Obama’s young and inexperienced too. I’d argue he’s a little more experienced than Palin in ways that make one presidential. (As an example: In 1988 Obama was attending Harvard Law School while Palin was getting paid to talk about dog sledding on a shitty local news show. Go to YouTube and search “Sarah Palin, KTUU-TV”; it’s worth it.) But yeah, they both have sorta thin resumes. So maybe we can all agree to stop talking about experience and focus instead on policy and a vision for the future? No? Didn’t think so. MTW

n Maui, as summer fades into fall, signs of the changing season don’t come from the weather. Here, it’s sunshine and balmy breezes right through the holidays and into the New Year. (And we’re not complaining…) But even though the climate stays joyfully consistent, things still change come September. As kids go back to school and the busy tourist season ends, an inevitable slowdown ensues. In many ways—from a peace and serenity and “nice, the beaches aren’t crowded anymore!” standpoint—that’s a good thing. But with our island economy so dependent on visitors, the annual autumn lull can make for some tough, lean times. And when pennies start getting pinched, eating out is often the first luxury to go by the wayside. Not so fast. As we labor to point out each year, a ton of Maui eateries offer kama’aina discounts, giving cash-strapped locals a much-needed break while drumming up business in the process. It’s your classic win-win. This year—in addition to our extensive listings, which highlight establishments that offer kama’aina specials—we’ve asked several local chefs and food preparers to weigh in with their thoughts on the choicest spots to grab grinds. You’ll find their answers, sprinkled with a few Maui Time staff selections, divided into the three meals of the day and further sorted by price range (we put the emphasis on cheap and mid-range eats but, hey—even when you’re in survival mode you’ve got to splurge once in a while). Having worked there, I can say that the restaurant is super green and super supportive of the arts, two ideals very important to me.” - WR Asian Star in $$ “[At Wailuku] you could eat outrageously under $20.”

ART&ENTERTAINMENT

Sculpting reality Artist Dale Zarrella finds the form within t’s not every day you see a beautiful mermaid bursting from a giant block of wood. Add the backdrop of a white sand beach and the glistening, halcyon Pacific Ocean at sunset and it’s easy to see why lots of people are stopping to admire Dale Zarrella’s handiwork. Chisel in hand, a relaxed smile on his face, Zarrella pauses to speak with passersby, breaking the invisible but often imposing wall between artist and viewer. “I’ve met some of the most incredible people doing this,” says the sculptor over drinks at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea, just a few hundred feet from where his striking creation sits silhouetted in the fading light. “It’s an interaction that I really enjoy.” Zarrella says children especially are fascinated by what he does. “I love it when they come up to ask questions or to touch [the sculpture],” he says. “It brings it to life for them in a way that something hanging on a wall or in a museum maybe wouldn’t.” He’s also had adults from every walk of life including a few celebrities—like actor Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame—approach him with curiosity and interest. “It’s a fascinating experiment,” he says. “Some people are so engaged and others seem to be walking through life with no idea what’s going on around them.”

I

a teenager he was commissioned to create an 8 1/2foot crucifix for the altar of his hometown church. After making the transition from the chilly confines of New England to Maui, Zarrella says his “whole world changed.” He began using new, exotic kinds of wood and, most important, gained a new creative source: the sea. He started incorporating whales, sea turtles and other oceanic elements into his work. Zarrella says the inspiration for sculpting mermaids came from a visit to influential Hawaiian artist and historian Herb Kane’s home. “He had a sculpture of a mermaid with a humpback whale he’d done many years ago in bronze. And I had a different vision of having her interact with sea turtles,” he remembers. The result of that idea is currently adorning the covered foyer of the Kea Lani; her sister sits in a state of emerging creation near the surf. Ultimately, Zarrella hopes to produce an extensive “Wailea mermaids” collection. While the wood he’s using won’t hold up outdoors, he envisions bronze castings that could adorn the area’s manicured grounds. Creating a mythical creature, rather than an animal that can be readily observed in nature, presents unique challenges for an artist. But Zarrella says he trusts the wood to help reveal the form. “It’s

For Zarrella, the impetus to bring his work outdoors and ultimately to South Maui’s stretch of posh beachfront resorts came, more or less, from cabin fever. “I realized I spent so much time in the workshop that I would miss sunsets, I wouldn’t get in the ocean for a few weeks,” he says. He couldn’t leave the work, so he brought it with him. Asked if he’s ever distracted by the attention, he says he gets his share of tranquility and quiet at home. He likens public sculpting to a musician performing a piece he’s already composed. “All the music is already written down,” he says. “Now I’m just playing it.” Zarrella, who grew up on a farm in Connecticut and moved to Maui in 1985, has been sculpting since age nine. His work quickly gained recognition and as

important to let the piece evolve as it wants to, rather than trying to control it, or force it to be what I want it to be,” he says. “I learned a long time ago that if I allow it to evolve naturally it’ll come out far beyond anything I can imagine.” For Zarrella, this brand of thinking extends beyond his craft. “As humans we can over-think things or try too hard to control things,” he says. “I know artists who try and control every aspect; they need to know exactly how things are going to turn out before they even start. I notice that’s how they approach life. When they come upon a problem they get frustrated and angry. “I learn from art and my art learns from life. Sometimes you just have to stay out of the way.” MTW

when college takes over their lives. As a boring exercise in youthful debauchery, this College is no place you’d ever want to go. Hagan paces the comedy as if she were popping sedatives like they were Goobers. If it weren’t for Andrew Caldwell’s angst-fuelled performance as Carter—the overweight and overhorny kid who gets luckier than he has a right to with a sorority girl bimbette—the movie would have no fuel in its tank. College could serve as a how-to textbook on hazing practices since most of the film’s overlong running time consists of pre-frosh humiliation pranks designed to turn stomachs if not dent funny bones. Our trio of underage drinkers fall for an offer from their frat boy hosts to do bodyshots at an all-night party, not realizing that they will be drinking tequila

obscene graphics drawn on his face in magic marker. Sensitive budding photographer Kevin (Drake Bell) awakens to find himself naked and duct-tapped in a provocative position to a statue in the center of campus. (If there’s a redeeming quality to College, it might be that it was filmed in New Orleans where its acts of public indulgence could be construed as a reminder of how poorly the place has been treated since Katrina, and in the face of more powerful storms hitting its shores. Or, maybe not.) College is an infantile movie about an aspect of university life that reminds me why I avoided fraternities like the plague when I attended San Diego State University—California’s notorious “biggest party school” at the time. For some poor kids, fraternities and sororities will be their primary induction into socializing, sex and bad

Cryptozoological Art Exhibition

Music is Love

Saturday (Sept 6). 6pm, Hui No‘eau Press, 2841 Baldwin Ave, Makawao

Friday (Sept 5), 10pm, Casanova, Makawao

[ART] What do you get when you combine the creative expertise of two Brooklyn artists, the raw vitality of 37 Maui high school students and mythical creatures? I’d have to say a series of wellcrafted imaginary beasts flush with originality. Brooklyn-based Canonball Press wood block artists Mike Houston and Martin Mazorra have spent the past two weeks working with students from five Maui high schools on perfecting the craft of wood block production and printmaking as part of a Hui No‘eau press workshop. Tonight we get to see the fruits of their labor at an all-ages show that will feature the sounds of DJ Boomshot as well as the Unsung Mighty Few. The theme is cryptozoology with a focus on mythical flora and fauna of the Hawaiian Islands. The students’ work will be on display until October 4. Free.

[MUSIC] Rudy Love is one of those unsung musicians who have worked closely with some of the most important acts of the past four decades. Love kicked off his musical career in the ‘60s, working with Little Richard and Ray Charles. In 1972 he joined genre-bending R&B/funk/rock legends Sly & the Family Stone (“Hot Fun in the Summertime” is quite an addictive tune), and toured with them for a decade before going solo. “My whole purpose in life has been to sing,” Love says in his bio. “Now I’m completing this musical journey that has only one reason—to express joy through singing and to spread the message of peace.” Tonight he performs with his son, who is also named Rudy Love. $10.

Augie T Saturday (Sept 6), 7:30pm, Castle Theater, MACC, Kahului [COMEDY] Few entertainers have worked as tirelessly as Augie Tulba to breathe life into the Hawaii comedy scene. You can catch Tulba on stage pretty much every weekend and hear his morning drive-time show on Q103.7. What’s unique about his brand of comedy is its strongly local feel. Yet while he gets much of his inspiration from life in Hawaii (and refers to some very familiar places in his act), his appeal is broad enough to have warranted tours of the Mainland and Guam. Plus he spends loads of time working with charitable causes. Tonight’s show benefits the Speak the Dream Foundation, a non-profit scholarship fund Tulba and his wife founded. Maui musician Willie K opens. $25, $20, $15.

[POLITICS] One of the most irritating and counterproductive things about the way we practice representative democracy is the robotic aspect of it. The execution of a candidate’s campaign often overshadows his or her ideas. Local elections do not have to be this way. These races are one instance when members of the public can often meet—and even challenge—candidates face to face. Sierra Club Maui’s picnic and outrigger canoe race gives Maui voters a chance to find out which candidates are interested in hearing their concerns—and which candidates couldn’t miss their tee time. There will be food available for purchase, keiki activities and performances by Benoit Jazz Works and Gail Swanson. Canoe races will begin at 9am. $5 suggested donation.

[FASHION] As vehemently anti-stereotype as I am, I do like the shopping, as I am quite particular about cut and cloth. Mall clothes won’t do, either. When you consider who makes them and what it takes to get them here, cookie cutter clothes are downright unethical, anyway. Consignment boutiques are the way to go. It’s a good sign that Wailuku’s Bohemia Boutique has done well enough that it can double its size. The first time I went in there I scored a sheer paisley tank and a denim mini that brings my miniskirt collection to about 12. They’ve got some cool locally crafted stuff as well; hip women who have recently reproduced may appreciate their Mick Jagger screen print onesies. To celebrate their expansion, Bohemia is having a “regrand” opening that will feature food and discounts on clothes. It coincides with Wailuku’s First Friday celebration, in case you need something to wear.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) The curtain rises for the second act of your star performance and you discover that half the audience left during intermission. This is depressing any way you cut it, but you shouldn’t feel bad, because it has so little to do with you. In fact, given that what happened during intermission to make so many people leave was the equivalent of Radiohead putting on a free concert across the street, you should feel pretty psyched that so many people stayed to see what else you could do. You owe your many fans your best performance, even if it hasn’t turned out the way you envisioned it.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Remember that others don’t always share your balanced, somewhat distanced view of a situation. You can approach certain circumstances with equanimity; since you can see the benefits of multiple possible outcomes, it’s easy for you to simply wait and see what happens. However, others don’t necessarily share that perspective. Take their impatience, urgency, or distress into account. You have the power here to make things easier, more pleasant, or more fulfilling for someone. Or you can sit back and just watch—but I’m betting (and hoping) you’re not that unkind.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Just because you show up late to the game doesn’t mean you can’t excel at it. Many late bloomers have proven that it’s not an insurmountable disadvantage to discover a new passion later in life. Yes, you may have to work harder and overcome more obstacles than someone who’s been at this for years, but few can match the follow-through of a determined (i.e. obsessed) Scorpio. There’s very little you should rule out; unless your ambition is to be an Olympic gymnast or a child prodigy, it’s probably not too late. I would, however, quit wasting time, and get to it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You just can’t win, can you? Your original decision got you so much flak from someone important to you that you actually changed your stubborn mind. That made that person happy, but pissed off a whole bunch of other people. What a mess, and there’s no easy way out. You have to (yet again) accept a simple truth: you can’t please everybody. Stop trying. Ultimately, you need to measure your actions against a yardstick that’s more reliable than gauging people’s fickle acceptance or conditional approval. Try simply doing what’s right—or at the very least what’s right for you.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) What’s good for your love life sucks for your career right now, and vice versa. The more you go out of your way to please your boss, the more pissed off your lover will get. And your fervent wishes that your workmates could be understanding about the demands of your personal life won’t make it so. The difficult line you must walk now requires you satisfy enough of the needs of both career and relationship so that you get neither fired nor dumped. I don’t envy you that tightrope juggling act. Unfortunately, unless you’re willing to give up one or the other for good, that’s the one you’ll have to perform.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Some of the best opportunities in your life are fleeting ones. In order to take advantage of them, you have to be poised to act on a moment’s notice, to take a graceful, Matrix-like leap into the open window of a moving train, chasing something beautiful. Even if you can’t quite be that spontaneous and open, just keeping your eyes open and your courage fired up should keep you from missing out on much. Don’t be a chicken. You’ll almost always regret the things you didn’t do a lot more than you’ll regret the things you did.

When you have few options, the path forward is clear. Having many brilliant possibilities before you, however, complicates the situation, and forces you to make the kinds of decisions you usually suck at. Would that we all were so “unlucky” as to have a plethora of amazing choices available to us. To you, it’s torture; to someone like a Leo or a Taurus (two signs that have no problem making up their minds), it’d be heaven. When faced with multiple possibilities, try to be like one of those decisive signs. Instead of agonizing over which of these potentially amazing paths is the right one, simply choose one that feels great and make it the right path.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Considering how strong-willed, bullheaded, and focused you usually are, I’m shocked that someone is even close to convincing you to pursue something you don’t really want (or deny yourself something you actually do). I can’t believe I have to remind you of this: own your desires. There’s nothing wrong with them, and other people’s ideas about what you should or shouldn’t aim for have nothing to do with what’s truly in your heart. Don’t let them sway you. It’s okay to hear and consider what others have to say, but ultimately if the voice of your own heart’s true desires doesn’t carry more weight than the words of the person standing next to you, something’s wrong.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) The niceties of civilized society have mutated with the advents of new technology. We’re more connected than we’ve ever been, and have less privacy. This is what it is. Times change, and you can cling to your old-school ideals all you like. Some may even respect you for it. But when they start holding you back from achieving your own hopes and dreams, it may be worth reconsidering some of them. Is it possible that your stubborn refusal to let go of outdated ideas is keeping you from a job, a lover, or some other opportunity? While it’s certainly possible that this simply means it’s the wrong career/relationship/chance for you, it could also mean that you’re holding yourself back just because you’re not willing to change. Don’t be stubborn just to be stubborn—and pay attention to what it’s costing you.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Consider your audience. You may be right and those you’re calling to accounts in the wrong, but the people listening to you might not see it so clearly. What do you actually hope to achieve by taking a stand here and now? Will the tactics you’ve chosen actually accomplish that? Do you think observers would have a more favorable opinion of you after your actions, or a less favorable opinion of those you oppose? Your heart’s in the right place, but the way you’re pursuing your goals is likely to leave you further from them than when you started. This is not an ends-justifies-the-means scenario, but your desired ends should certainly inform your means; that is you should make sure the path you’re on actually leads to where you want to go—before you take another step.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) All your best intentions amount to nothing if you’re really going to give up as soon as you encounter trouble. This is the path you’ve chosen, and you should have been able to see from the get-go that it would be a rocky one. Even if you didn’t, you ought to be guess that giving up now would invalidate most of what you’ve been up to the last couple months, putting you pretty much back at square one. Don’t be so wimpy. You can get through this, and you should. This is a bump in the road, nothing more. If you see it as an immovable mountain, you’re not yet looking at it in the right way.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Your patience has been at an all-time low these past few weeks. You’ve noticed, haven’t you? You feel like you’ve been waiting hours; you check your watch and are shocked to discover it’s only been minutes. Two weeks feels like a year. The clock may be ticking but it’s time to get yours checked out, since it’s obviously wound up way too tight. What do you need to slow it down to a more normal and manageable speed? This week, figure that out, before you sprint to the finish line so fast that the other people in the race with you decide it’s not even worth running.
