LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR DANCE, DANCE, DANCE [Editor’s note: the following two letters are in reference to Star Begley’s Aug. 9, 2007 story “Nothin’ but a Hoochie, Mama”) Sorry this comment is so late, but I thought it important to share, regardless of the timeliness of my reply. I also want to preface my statements by mentioning I am an Irish German Haole, who has spent about nine years studying the culture and the music, so feel free to disregard my remarks as poppycock. But if you do, then pray tell, how are yours valid? Primarily, Ori is a celebration of life. Your fixation or dissatisfaction with the movements within the dance may be based on a misunderstanding about their meaning. Hula tells the story with the hands, Ori speaks via the hips. To contain the hips is to contain the story. The fact that Tamari‘i are taught the same moves as adults is more generational egalitarianism than an attempt to assuage the pedophilic thirst of random perverts, or to get an early start in promoting promiscuity. With that in mind, it seems that it is your myopic perspective which needs to be examined rather than cultural dances of Tahiti and the Cook Islands. -Darrel Smith, Kihei Just writing a shout out to Restless Native. Although, I did at times find Holoholo Girl mildly amusing, mostly it was a pathetic waste of a public platform. Thank you for using your precious freedom of press to write about something other than booze, boys and bars. I honestly don’t know why all your Holoholo fan critics decided just now to take what they read in the Maui Time too seriously. Or why they can’t help but completely overlook that you are pointing out a very critical issue in modern society surrounding little girls because they are too busy trying to defend themselves or are too uncomfortable with the real issue to let you point it out to them. My sister and I both used to belly dance when we were really little. Yes, we knew it was sexy. Come on, we got louder whistles than our moms. It’s just too bad nobody taught us selfdefense, too, so we could deal with all the perverts we learned how to so easily attract. And this was way before Britney! Besides, kids don’t need that to feel good about their bodies. Moms need the classes so they can feel good about themselves and not put their daughters down for being or dress them up
as a younger, hotter version of what they once were. Yeah, maybe this is just my harsh reality, but if one other person can relate than it is worth sharing. These ancient tribal dances can be a richly educational, cultural, fun and even healthy experience for many. However, both them, and sexuality in general, must be recognized for the power they induce, which when wielded by a young person who knows nothing about it can bring about disastrous results. Yeah, sex and sensuality is a beautiful thing we ought not to be ashamed of. But let’s face it, sex education is practically non-existent for most people. You can’t learn that on Reality TV! -Anonymous, via email

EH BRAH!

ehbrah@mauitime.com Just want to thank the lovely couple that lives above me for three months of misery. Look, I don’t know what trailer park you crawled out of, but here on Maui we try to be “considerate” to our neighbors. We don’t sit on our lanai at two in the morning downing beer and Mountain Dew, smoking and playing the radio—the radio!—so loud that people down the street could hear it. Nor do we camp out on our lanai at the crack of dawn, making mindless, gossipy cell phone calls to our dysfunctional friends and family members on the mainland. Why couldn’t you have just had interesting things to say during the hours and hours each day and night you perched your fat asses above my apartment? If you’re going to blast music throughout the neighborhood, why couldn’t it have good music? From your lanai, you could both see and hear the ocean–wasn’t that good enough for you?

Toy Story Why one Upcountry retailer refuses to sell Chinese-made toys August was a flurry of toy recalls, news reports and opinions on what is and isn’t acceptable in the world of toy manufacturing. Over the past month, with nearly 20 million Chinese-manufactured toys recalled for health and safety reasons, the issue of toy safety has become a lot bigger than simply sifting through the box in search of toys from the recall. In fact, many parents are now wondering if any toy carrying the “Made in China” label is safe.
“So many toys are made in unfair, inhumane situations by kids,” Shay Chan Hodges, a longtime local Democratic Party activist and owner of Maui Child Toys and Books in Makawao, says. “Why would you buy a toy for a kid that’s made by a kid? Plus, we worry about our kids playing with something made with lead paint, but what about the person–maybe even child–who was sitting there for 12 hours painting it in the first place?” For the past few years, Chan Hodges and her family have made it a point not to buy things made in China. It hasn’t been easy. “Everything is made in China,” she says. “And it’s hard, because sometimes it’s like why should I spend $20 on something when I can pay $5 for the same thing from China?” The answer, she says, is that “you can expect to pay more for stuff made here.” That’s at least partially due to laws and regulations on the manufactur-
ing end, as well as federal government mandates requiring employers to pay their employees minimum wage and provide them health insurance. “These laws are what makes it possible to live safely,” Chan Hodges says. “They’re not perfect, but they’re here to protect you.” As a retailer, Chan Hodges says she’s adamant about doing whatever she can to protect Maui’s keiki from hazardous materials in toys, support U.S. manufacturers and oppose those who fail to abide by American quality standards on both labor and safety. “I know where every toy in my shop is made,” she says. “I know how much the people who make them are paid, and I know how many hours the employees are required to work. If you come in to the store and ask about a product, I can tell you about it confidently.” But adhering to those policies can make business difficult. Since acquiring the store from its previous owner (Chan Hodges’ mother-in-law owned it for 17 years) she has lost product that sold well because of her convictions. “Even if something sells well, it doesn’t matter,” she says. “If I can’t get a straight answer from people on the questions that I ask, I know there’s a problem and I just won’t carry it anymore.” According to Chan Hodges, no consumer is taking a personal risk by standing against bad labor conditions and toys that may contain toxins. “If you can’t talk to someone and find out where it’s made and by whom, you just don’t know,” she says. “What you can do is simply choose not to support it.” But just because a toy has a “Made in (insert foreign country)” tag on it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to cost less. “We used to carry these horses, and they were popular,” she says. “They were expensive, though. I mean, they’re made in China for cheap. Someone is making tons of money off it and it’s not the retailer or the manufacturer.” Maui Child Toys and Books is located at 1158 Makawao Ave. in Makawao. ROBREPORT
BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET
30 Years on Maui Looking back, even while facing future Let’s get together and do it again -Cecilio & Kapono A lot can happen in 30 years. Back when I arrived on Maui in 1977, the population hovered around 63,000— less than half of what it is now. Traffic was light, or nonexistent. Maui had yet to be fully “discovered” by the rest of the world, and by those who would see dollar signs where others saw unspoiled beauty and charm. Two college buddies had come out the year before, while I managed a record shop in East Lansing, Michigan, right across from the Michigan State University campus. A third college buddy had a brother who lived on Maui, and told my friends to look him up when they arrived. Martin Blechta and his wife Mary ran a restaurant in Paia, the EZ Café. Located where Flatbreads is today (Wunderbar and Dillon’s before that), the EZ was a hippie health food haven, and the only place I’ve ever had a waitress take my order twice. Martin and Mary also opened up PicNics on Baldwin Ave., home of the fabulous spinach nutburger. My friends were told that two hotels had just been completed in Wailea, the Hotel Intercontinental and the Wailea Beach Resort, and jobs were easy to find. While I toiled back in chilly Michigan, letters arrived describing the Hawaiian beaches, flowers, trees, culture and way of life. Bundled up in layers of clothing, I
thought it all sounded good. Wazoo Records was a ticket outlet for lots of shows, and one night a local club, the Silver Dollar, hosted an up and coming band from Hawai‘i: Cecilio & Kapono. On tour promoting their second album, they sounded fabulous. Finally, I packed my bags and flew to Hawai‘i. Walking from the plane to the terminal in Honolulu, the warm humid air enveloped me, with a mixture of jet fuel and plumerias wafting on the tradewinds. On Maui, the tiny airport still featured a banyan tree growing through the roof, where mynah birds would gather at dusk and raise a ruckus. I had arrived. I began the search for a car, a job and a place to stay. President Jimmy Carter had just been through the Mideast oil embargo, sending gas prices soaring to $1.25 a gallon. Fuel efficiency and compact cars were hip. My first car was a 1970 Toyota Corolla. I quickly found work at a popular openair restaurant in old Wailuku town. La Familia, where Saeng Thai now operates on Vineyard St., was in its heyday. Serving great Mexican food and frosty margaritas, it was hugely popular for a business lunch or to whisk airport arrivals to the tropical setting for Happy Hour. Tony Habib, La Familia’s owner, had owned a nightclub in San Diego called Funky Quarters and still had connections in the music business. Thus, his customers included Alice Cooper, Jesse Colin Young, Yvonne Elliman and members of the Eagles.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Inside La Familia Restaurant, August 1981
When La Familia began featuring live music at night, Merv Oana’s ‘Iao Stream Band would launch into a chicken skin rendition of Peter Moon’s hit “Cane Fire.” In time, they introduced a newly arrived conga player, who would become far better known for his guitar artistry—Joe Cano. Wailuku was a quaint mix of old town charm and thriving new business. Frenchy’s newsstand and crack seed stood next to the dry cleaner, now Unisan sushi. Around the corner, the ‘Iao Grocery still operated where Bernard’s Bentos to Banquets now dishes up local food. Across the street, the dilapidated King Theater still stood, in shades of gray. Just below the Vineyard Tavern, the Chee Kung Tong Society building, built in 1905, was in a similar state of disrepair. Carlene’s Café across from National Dollar Store was often standing room only for breakfast, with generous portions and homemade toasted herb bread. Later eateries in that locale include Hamburger Mary’s, Shakalaka Fish and Chips, Café Brooklyn and now Ohana Café. I’d found a car and steady work, but a home rental proved more challenging, and certainly not because vacation rentals meant less availability for residents. We found a two-bedroom rental in Kuau for $325 a month, but it wouldn’t be ready for another month. With that, I found myself sleeping on the beach between Ma‘alaea and North Kihei, usually within range of several other campers. My first Christmas away from home also meant no roof over my head, only the stars sparkling through kiawe branches. Had I not been staying on the beach, I
likely would have missed seeing the most glorious sunrise of my life, Jan. 10, 1978. Clouds stretching from Haleakala’s summit lit the sky in vivid pink, gold and red. Playing pool in one of the only places available, Charley’s in Paia, I was taught the correct pronunciation of “Hauoli Makahiki Hou” by Eddie “Too Tall” Wilson. I would sometimes see Eddie playing trumpet at the Pioneer Inn, sitting in with local legendary boogie-woogie pianist David Paquette. Fleetwood Mac, at the height of their popularity, played a sold-out concert at Lahaina Tennis Stadium. Bob Marley and the Wailers filled the Lahaina Amphitheater on a weekend afternoon, long before reggae and Hawaiian music melded into “Jawaiian.” Elton John showed up unannounced one night in Lahaina and rocked the Blue Max where BJ’s Chicago Pizzeria is today. Before direct flights came to Maui in the early 1980’s, the economy felt a seasonal surge from its hidden agricultural industry, pakalolo. I actually used to think that “pig hunting” was merely a euphemism for going hiking in the mountains to tend one’s plants, until I found out that people actually did both. Oasis Maui in Haiku’s Pauwela Cannery was a thriving business, with organic fertilizers used by many growers. Up in Makawao, Sub Molina’s Club Rodeo served up dinner and dancing, preceding Piero’s, the Tillerman and Casanova’s. The corner now occupied by Polli’s was the Upcountry Fishery, with See 30 Years: continued on page 11

ALL GREENWASHED UP Developer Everett Dowling is no stranger to “green-washing”—a favorite tactic employed by big, powerful corporations who want to hype environmental credentials, real or otherwise. Now we’re not saying that Dowling’s commitment to energy-efficient light bulbs and “green” building techniques is fake, but we are saying that there might be better ways to support the environment—especially the sensitive, historic Makena coastline—than by building ultra-luxurious, energy-efficient condos. Of course, others disagree. On Aug. 29, Dowling received an award at Hawaii Home+Remodeling’s inaugural “Who’s Keeping Hawaii Green” thing on Oahu. It’s a prestigious award, I guess, but it pales before the big wet one Maui Weekly columnist Subashini Ganesan planted on Dowling in that paper’s July 26 issue: “This multidimensional personality [Dowling] is a great example of a local businessman who is working to balance environmental responsibility and profitability,” she wrote. “The growth of Everett Dowling’s green initiatives may very well determine the balance and prosperity of the Maui community and natural environment.”
NO FUEL LIKE AN OLD FUEL And MECO rises two notches this week for somehow managing to keep out of the news until now (sorry) that their big $61 million Waena biodiesel refinery partner BlueEarth Biofuels, LLC hired former Maui County Councilman Dain Kane as their “Maui Director” (I think that means “lobbyist). Anyway, they’d have risen higher if only they’d made a big deal about bringing Kane on board back when they first hired him. MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, Aug. 29 Some people, today’s Honolulu Advertiser tells us, are “beginning to question whether the Lingle administration and the state Legislature acted wisely” on the issue of Hawai`i Superferry. Really? I thought last second state Supreme Court rulings, Temporary Restraining Orders, $5inter-island passenger fares and human chains of surfers stretched across Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai to be standard operating procedure in Hawai‘i. At least Governor Linda Lingle has managed to find the real victim here—and it’s not all those stranded passengers caught in the middle, residents and environmentalists who’ve felt jerked around for three years or even the Superferry executives and their employees who were told one thing only to be snapped back at the last second. “This does hurt the visitor industry,” Lingle told the Advertiser. “It also hurts our reputation as a place to do business and to be treated fairly.” A place to do business? That’s Hawai‘i’s reputation? Since when?
THURSDAY, Aug. 30 No really—since when?
What a coincidence: just two days after Hawai‘i Superferry, Inc. asked for a Sept. 6 evidentiary hearing on the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) dragging them down (instead of an immediate ruling based on the law), today’s Maui News is reporting that Wailuku attorney Isaac Hall rejected a secret deal proposed by Hawai‘i Superferry (HSF) lawyers back in 2005 to do a private, “limited” environmental review. HSF attorney Lisa Woods Munger “proposed cooperating with the plaintiffs to hire a consultant to conduct an environmental study, which would be of an ‘agreed-upon scope,’ but not subject to Hawaii’s Chapter 343 environmental law review,” the News reported. Telling the News that she was “stunned,” Superferry Maui Advisory Board member Madge Shaefer (and Superferry booster) said this is proof that “They [Hall and his environmentalist clients] just care about shutting down the Superferry… I would respect them more if they just admitted that.” I’m stunned, too, though mostly because, according to the story, Hall wanted to keep this whole thing under wraps, but was thwarted by the News, which had obtained what he called “confidential” documents detailing the proposed deal. “Parties in court cases will never participate in goodfaith negotiations if their confidential communications are publicized,” he told the paper. “The Sierra Club, Maui Tomorrow and the Kahului Harbor Coalition will not participate in this unauthorized and unethical effort to circuitously place inadmissible evidence before the court.” Look, Hall—I agree with you that this is probably a ploy to throw mud on you and your clients, but come on: you know that reporters (including me) will run stories on “confidential” documents as often as we can because, well, it’s our right and duty to do so. Besides, what difference does a two-yearold, obviously half-hearted Superferry settlement offer make these days? The Hawai`i Supreme Court has ruled that the state Department of Transportation needs to do a full Chap. 343 environmental review of the Superferry. You have the legal as well as moral high ground here—why get all agitated now?
SATURDAY, Sept. 1 I just realized that you can’t spell “Idaho” without “ho.”

SUNDAY, Sept. 2 Sorry to keep blasting away at the Superferry, but if the company officials and public relations flacks quoted in today’s Honolulu Advertiser are actually telling the truth, then we won’t be hearing about the Superferry for much longer. According to today’s paper, back in March, David Wilson of McNeil Wilson Communications said in a little-noticed online interview that, “If there is an EIS, Superferry is leaving.” And in a more recent interview with the paper, Superferry CEO John Garibaldi used the word “show-stopper” in describing the effect a full, statefunded EIS would have on his new fast ferry. Not to put too fine a point on all this, but these guys are being babies. You’d think having to do an EIS put such immense restrictions on development that everything in Hawai‘i has ground to a halt over the last couple generations. Was this thing so precariously balanced on a knife edge of federal loan guarantees (over $180 million!) and corporate welfare that the slightest breath of wind—and that’s all environmental law is in this nation, I kid you not—would be enough to topple it into the briny depths? If so: damn!

around the office have been kicking around the idea of what will become of the boats should Garibaldi and his crew jump ship and swim away. The answer, in my opinion, is that the Superferry Alakai and her stillbeing-built sister ship would go to the military. This yesterday’s Advertiser teased with the line “Some Superferry opponents believe the Alakai and a second ferry could be used to transport the Army’s Stryker brigade vehicles.” Believe? The only reason opponents believe that is because Superferry super-investor John F. Lehman—a former U.S. Navy Secretary!— has said exactly that. “The Superferry is strong enough to take Stryker vehicles,” he said in the March 28, 2005 Pacific Business News. That article went on to report that, “the Superferry plans to operate a Westpac Express, essentially to carry military equipment and ferry vehicles from Oahu to the Big Island on a daily basis.”
TUESDAY, Sept. 4 It’s probably much too late to do anything about it now, but anyone who tries out the microwave hot dog recipe (recipe? Isn’t there a button on the microwave marked “hot dog?”) posted on the Honolulu Advertiser website will face serious and unmitigated disaster of nearly Biblical proportions. “Place hot dogs on a microwave-safe plate; cook on high (100 percent) power until done, about 1 minute,” states the recipe, somehow leaving out THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of microwaving hot dogs—you must POKE HOLES in the hot dog before cooking! If not, the hot dog will explode! I’ve seen it happen! Oh, the humanity! Anthony Pignataro is not kidding, people. MTW

Riding horses in town was commonplace, and not just a Fourth of July event. Late afternoons were often spent body surfing at Baldwin Beach. For 65 cents, you could quench your thirst with Haiku juices in tin cans wrapped in colorful paper labels. Nagata Store’s boiled peanuts and a jar of kim chee were the perfect compliments. Hawaiian sunset music was featured nightly on the radio, with the classic tunes of Gabby Pahinui, Olomana, Hui ‘Ohana, Billy Kaui and Country Comfort, the Brothers Cazimero and Macky Feary’s Kalapana. An adventuresome soul could still take the old road from Ulupalakua to Makena, though I recall seeing a muffler or two that had been lost along the way. Makena was still a long way from anywhere, requiring the commitment of navigating dusty, potholed Old Makena Rd. The few houses along the shoreline were humble, not the palatial mansions that now crowd our coast. We celebrated special occasions by dressing up for Sunday champagne brunch at Stouffer’s Wailea Beach hotel, with Tony Van Steen elegantly playing the grand piano. Stuffed as could be, we’d head south to any number of mostly deserted beaches, with room to throw a Frisbee or just sunbathe and swim.
Ric Hoogestraat is married to Sue and works at a call center in the Phoenix area but spends 30-plus hours a week inside the online Second Life video game, pretending that he’s the digitally drawn Dutch Hoorenbeek, a 6-foot-9, muscular babe magnet who lives on his own island. That unnerves Sue, according to an August Wall Street Journal profile, especially since Dutch recently “married” a digital woman and set up housekeeping with their two digital dogs. (The real-life creator of the new Mrs. Hoorenbeek has never met Ric and says she never will.) Dutch and his wife spend hours shopping and motorcycling together, leaving Ric little time for Sue. “Is this man cheating on his wife [meaning Sue]?” the Journal asked. Lamented Sue: “You try to talk to [Ric] or bring [him] a drink, and [he]’ll be having sex with a cartoon.”
In 1979, Elmer Cravalho suddenly resigned during his term as Maui County Mayor, prompting a special election. Wayne Nishiki ran a bold campaign, asking, “Do you want Maui to become another Oahu?” His TV ads slashed the “N” of his last name across the screen like the “Z” in Zorro, while the voice-over exclaimed, “Nishiki!” The election was close, with Hannibal Tavares winning and guiding Maui’s development and growth over the next decade. The 1980’s brought direct airline flights, a Time Magazine cover featuring Maui, and unprecedented growth in building new hotels and condos. Investments from the Japanese market lifted the economic bubble into the 1990’s. After a short plateau, construction and real estate continues to bring new wealth into the islands, and new challenges along with it. It’s not easy to imagine what Maui may be like in another 30 years, or what sort of memories from 2007 we may look back at with great fondness and nostalgia. By giving a nod to what makes Maui so special, past and present, perhaps we may choose wisely to create the future we wish to face. Hopefully, that future will be one that holds respect and aloha for our entire community, our shared resources, and for making positive changes to strive for peace and harmony. MTW

World of Warcraft is an online game as popular as Second Life, with warrior-players amassing digital gold coins from every opponent they vanquish, and the greater the lucre, the higher they advance in the WOW ranks. Some players take the easy route, though, and buy their WOW gold coins from dealers, who mostly get them from “Chinese gold farmers” in Nanjing and other cities— men and women hired to play the game 80 hours a week, not for advancement but to score coins that they can sell to other players, at the equivalent of about $1.25 per 100 coins (marked up to $20 per 100, retail), according to a June New York Times Magazine article.

The unusual story behind Maui’s lighthouses
B

y almost all accounts, the storm was a real screamer. It came up fast in the night and caught the ship of Captain Daniel McGregor somewhere off the sea cliffs or “pali” between Ma‘alaea and Olowalu, on the south shore of Maui. Most likely a schooner—a “coaster” engaged in the hazardous trade of moving cargo between the islands— McGregor’s ship was unable to make sail into Ma‘alaea due to the fierce conditions. Blinded by the darkness and driving rain, McGregor posted men in the bow and along the rails with sounding lines. With the men hollering out the depth as they proceeded, the ship groped its way toward shore. When the water became ominously shallow, McGregor ordered the anchors set. Peering out into the blackness, he couldn’t make out for sure why, but the winds lessened at about this spot. With his vessel secured, he allowed the exhausted crew to “stand down” and fall asleep. Come morning, the men awakened to blue skies and found that the schooner had blundered into a cove between two rocky highlands. As word of the nearmiraculous anchoring spread, one of these promontories became known as “McGregor Point,” after the intrepid captain. Afterward, other ships used the same anchorage. It was smaller than the one in neighboring Ma‘alaea but provided protection from the incessant winds blowing in from the north. A wharf and other facilities were constructed there. For a while, it became a stop for the Inter-Island Steamship Company and recorded more traffic than Ma‘alaea Harbor itself. When McGregor anchored there that stormy night circa 1875, he didn’t have the benefit of a light to guide him in, or at least not much of one. The first “lighthouse” in the area stood on a wharf in Ma‘alaea, sometime in the late 1800’s. Even by standards back then, it wasn’t very effective. In 1904, an inspector doing a survey of Maui’s aids to navigation described it as “an ordinary red lantern hung from a post.” When the station was to be updated shortly after, a new location was chosen. The highland at nearby McGregor Point provided more elevation. Plus the port facilities there were still experiencing good usage, making it a logical spot for the new “A to N,” or aid to navigation. The first light station was built there in 1906. A 32-foot white mast was erected, with a fixed red lamp mounted on top. A keeper’s housing and support building also went up, each with matching red roofing. That same year a tsunami roared in and obliterated the old light, along with almost everything else in

Ma‘alaea. The wharf at McGregor Landing also washed away. But higher up on the slope, the new station remained high and dry. Of pyramidal shape and made of concrete, the present 20-foot tower dates to 1915. Many local stations have this style. Early on, trestles or “skeleton towers” of metal or wood were used as elevating platforms. Nowadays, to the horror of fans of traditional lights, a large metal pipe often elevates the beacon itself. The U.S. Coast Guard, which oversees them, calls such emplacements “light towers” or “light structures.” They’re easy to maintain and hard to vandalize but lack the charm and character of actual lighthouses. And they do not require a keeper, only an “ATON” or “ANT” (aids to navigation team) that makes the rounds between them a few times a year. One of the most famous of these structures stands in Lahaina. At 39 feet, its trim, pyramidal shape suggests ancient Egyptian obelisks. Like McGregor Point Light, it’s an exercise in practicality. Just a small plaque on one side marks one of the most historic light stations in the country, much less in the Hawaiian Islands. “On this site in 1840 King Kamehameha ordered a nine foot wooden tower built as an aid for the whaling ships anchored off Lahaina,” reads the inscription. But the significance of this statement goes far beyond the event mentioned—the tower marked the beginning of lighthouses in the entire Pacific basin. That first tower was positioned to mark the “keawaiki” or small passage through the coral reef along the waterfront. Countless whaleboats used this passage while accessing the town for water and supplies. A letter from John Kapena, an early resident of Lahaina, explains the value of the early A to N in human terms: “[F]or those vessels, boats and canoes that may come into port at night, because there were quite a number of boats wrecked by waves [with considerable loss of life].” In addition to the commercial aspect, the first light served a political role as well—Lahaina was vying with Honolulu to become the port of influence in the islands, as well as for the whalers’ business. In a maritime-based economy, good navigational aids were essential. At least six different lights shone there through the next eight decades. One of the most notable was built in 1866. A wooden tower went up atop a waterfront

storehouse, often used for sugar storage. The storehouse was leased out at $96 a year, to help pay for the station’s upkeep.
The Lahaina tower, not that long ago
The top floor of the tower contained the lamp room and sleeping quarters for the keeper. This was one of the first such light stations anywhere to use kerosene instead of whale oil as an illuminant. But the inspector surveying Maui’s aids in 1904 was hardly impressed— he described the signal itself as “two ordinary kitchen lamps of small power.” As Lahaina continued as the most important shipping destination on Maui into the next century, the station was upgraded. The present tower was constructed of reinforced concrete in 1917. Twenty years later it was

to make three or four tries before he could place the back wheels in just the right place on the ledge. The ledge at top is very narrow and the plane has to be balanced on its two back wheels with the nose sticking out over the cliff about one hundred and sixty feet above the water.” Savi explained that the team made a hurried exit, frantically unloading their equipment, food and water. But just as the craft was becoming airborne again, a blast of wind caught the chopper, driving it back against the barren ridge and hurling equipment and their lunch cooler over the cliff. “It turned out that the helo was damaged, and they had to send a different one out for us that evening,” Savi added. “The wind was still blowing and we were wondering if they’d be able to pick us up. We didn’t have a tent or even a sleeping bag. There was just us on that rock with the geckos and spiders…”

In general, Hawai‘i holds many such structures but few “classic” lighthouses, such as those in New England or the West Coast. These are the images of popular culture, with adjoining buildings and silo-like towers containing sparkling Fresnel lenses. Oahu has the most of these. Maui currently has none. While dozens of other aids exist here now, “unofficial aids” have flickered in the night for centuries. Clean your Beach Saturday (Sept. 8) Noon, at Kamehameha Iki Park, Front Street Lahaina [VOLUNTEER] We all know Maui no ka oi. We’ve got the best people, the best weather and all the best beaches. But sometimes those beaches need a little help to stay pristine. So it’s time to lend a hand at the Third Annual Lahaina Town Beach Clean Up, sponsored in part by the Santa Fe Cantina, the Kokua Hawai`i Foundation and more. Now you might think there are more relaxing or enjoyable things to do on a Saturday afternoon, but I beg to differ. This year there’ll be tons of giveaways from local retailers and great food donated from some of Maui’s best restaurants, live music and at sundown–when the beaches and streets from Puamana to Mala are cleaned up and looking fine–a screening of Quicksilver’s new flick Young Guns 3 will be projected onto a 14-foot video screen, so you’ll see lots of Maui surf action. Oh, and they’re also showing The Goonies! Yeah, The Goonies! Lahaina Skate Company will be on hand to take all of you recyclables (read: that mound of beer cans in your back yard) off your hands, and they’ll put the profits from the redemption towards a future skate park project in Lahaina. So come down with your crew (and the evidence of last week’s rager) and spend a fun day at the beach, get yummy local grinds, cool free stuff and feel good about pitching in to keep Lahaina clean. Email Matt Lane (m_lane@hotmail.com) for more info. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Starr Begley
Masochists in Action!
Necking at the Drive-in
Saturday (Sept. 8), 5:30 a.m. from Kahului Airport to Hana
Saturday (Sept. 8), 6 p.m. at Maui Community College
[RELAY] I can take jabs at long distance runners because I used to be one. In fact, I was a really good one. I may not be able to walk up the street without feeling like my liver is going to blow up nowadays, but I used to kick ass. The 36th Annual Hana Relay is back with six waves of runners heading out from Kahului in the wee hours of the morning. There will be a max of 125 teams with six runners each. No road closures are scheduled and the best place to check out the action is Baldwin Beach park, the Haiku Community Center or while snarfing down breakfast in Paia town. All joking aside, it sounds like a fantastic run. The views alone and the different climates are enticing. In fact, I just may bust out the old running shoes and… Nah. Runners may register until Sept. 7 at Runner’s Paradise at the Maui Mall. 877-5300 for more information.
[FAMILY FUN] Okay, so it’s kind of hard to neck with munchkins bouncing around in the backseat. Believe me, I’ve tried. But just because it’s hard to feel amorous with the peeps around, it doesn’t mean you won’t have a good time trying. MauiFEST and MCC get together again to bring you another family night at the Drive-in with food, music and three award winning films: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Soul Surfer and The Shimmering. Remember, Sorcerers Stone is the Harry Potter movie where things aren’t so spooky and Daniel Radcliffe is still little and adorable instead of oddly hot and tempting… so it’s okay. Admission: $5 walk in, $20 per car (all you can fit), kids under 12 are free. Call 573-5530 or visit mauifest.net for more details.

An Evening with Wailea 670 Monday (Sept. 10), 6 p.m. at the Kihei Community Center [PUBLIC HEARING] You asked for it—this Monday the Maui County Land Use Committee will hold an actual public hearing during evening hours (in your face LUC Chairman Mike Molina!) on the proposal to build 1,400 luxury homes and a private, exclusive golf course on 670 acres of Wailea that include a huge swath of hitherto untouched native dryland forest that’s one of the most endangered ecosystems on earth. Finally, here’s a chance for people who have to work during the day to hear testimony and perhaps even put their views on the public record. Maybe even someone will ask Chairman Molina why it took him so damn long to hold a nighttime hearing on the biggest development project to hit South Maui in decades. The Kihei Community Center is located at 303 Lipoa St. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Sea Wees Wednesday (Sept. 12) 9:30 a.m., at the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Discovery Center, Ma`alaea [KEIKI] Children are like sponges. They quickly absorb all the naughty words, bad habits and annoying mannerisms around them. My little brother, for example, called our new kitten “damn, stupid cat” for weeks after she shredded my favorite sweater. Given the opportunity though, they’ll also soak up the positive stuff. That’s why the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Sea Wees program is cool. It’s a chance for impressionable little minds ages three to five to learn about sea creatures, the ocean and protecting our ecosystems. This month’s watery theme, “Go With the Flow: Stream to Sea,” will teach kids about the unique animals that chill out in streams before cruising out to the deep blue, and what happens to them after reaching the open ocean. They’ll also get to take a field trip to ‘Iao or Waihe`e stream for an upclose and personal view of the cycle of water in motion. It’s a great opportunity for your little ones to learn new things, and the words they pick up are all but guaranteed not to embarrass you in front of your mother. $10 per class or $40 for five. 249-8811. FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Crowe vs. Bale James Mangold reinvents Elmore Leonard’s western Director James Mangold’s update of Elmore Leonard’s 1957 short story 3:10 to Yuma is a gritty actionpacked movie that trades on the talents of its headstrong leading men. Russell Crowe effortlessly settles into the role of mastermind robber Ben Wade, whose days of killing and theft draw to a close after his capture at a brothel where he dallies too long.
3:10 to Yuma
★★★★★ Rated R/120 min.
Distraught rancher Dan Evans (Christian Bale) is on the brink of loosing his land to the railroad when he accepts the promise of a rich reward to help capture and escort Ben Wade as far as the 3:10 train to Yuma prison where he is to be hanged. Nevertheless, the handcuffed prisoner increases his chances of escape with every guard he eliminates during the intense overland journey. Dan’s disobedient teenage son Will (Logan Lerman) comes to his father’s aid, and proves to be an essential
asset before the train for Yuma leaves the station. Aside from a few plot pits, 3:10 to Yuma is a boisterous western with strong ensemble performances all around. Early on, ruffians set fire to Dan’s barn and he swears retribution that he is powerless to achieve. Since losing a leg in the Civil War, Dan wears a prosthetic limb that challenges his son’s doubts about his father. Even Dan’s wife (Gretchen Mol) has little faith in her husband’s ability to provide for their family. These are the ingredients of pathos that Bale skewers as a master of the unexpected emotion. 3:10 to Yuma sets itself apart from the archetypal revenge structure by pitting the notion of an ingenious bandit against an emasculated war veteran struggling to save his family. There’s a wealth of dramatic material here, and a large part of the film’s appeal comes from the duality between its notoriously contentious leading men. Crowe’s studied composure withers in the presence of Bale’s slow-burn tenacity even as Wade is sold as Dan’s physical and intellectual superior. Bale is the better actor, and you can see it in the way he manipulates nuances of motivation that leave a mark, while Crowe’s throwaway performance is smooth to a fault. Mangold (Walk the Line) sees where Elmore Leonard’s post-modern western strays from classical constraints of the genre, and is keen to emphasize an unconventional tone to the violence. Sequences of brutal action are treated with the desperation and intellect of the
Um, I’d find a better shield, if I were you...
characters, while staying true to their inherent cinematic energy. There’s a moment of fetishistic appreciation for the weaponry of the day during a payroll coach robbery that Wade commands before being caught. A shiny Gatling gun mounted in the coach promises to overpower the thieves, and the audience is invited to marvel at its impressive functionality. And yet, when Dan and his son come upon the heist
from afar, we share in accepting the dark allure of the crime that Will appreciates for its palpable excitement. Visually, 3:10 to Yuma is stunning. An undercurrent of excitement permeates every frame. A battle of wits between Dan and Wade lock the men in an extended duel that the audience is privy to on a subconscious level until the film’s last moments bring on a rush of realization. Justice is not what it seems. MTW

Girl Power Paula Fuga’s Lilikoi Fair gives women hope and encouragement If I want to catch a fish, I must tend to my lo‘i. The fishpond will fill up and I can choose correctly. –Hawaiian verse in Paula Fuga’s Lilikoi Every time I turn on the radio, I’m reminded that my humps, bumps and ability to teeter on four-inch heels while wearing nothing but a pair of bootie shorts and lace bra makes me an interesting and desirable person. If a girl’s not careful, over time she runs the risk of becoming just a shell of the person she’s meant to be.
Lilikoi Fair Sun., Sept. 9 at Mulligans on the Blue, Wailea, $25, $20. www.paulafugamusic.com for more info.
Paula Fuga, the 2007 Na Hoku Hano Hano Award’s Most Promising New Artist, understands this way of thinking and wants to change it. Her first annual Lilikoi Fair–a three-day, three-island event will kick off and help pave the way to materializing Fuga’s Lilikoi Foundation–is designed to empower Hawai‘i’s women. The lineup includes Fuga, Tempo Valley (only on Oahu) the sultry voiced Micky Huihui of Ooklah the Moc, New York songstress Sparlha Swa, the conscious New York poetry duo Climbing PoeTree, Hawai‘i’s allfemale acoustic trio The Girlas (who were featured at this year’s Kokua Festival) as well as (on Maui only) Kahala of the band Lawa. The fair will also include a fashion show by female designers Kealopiko. “When I wrote the song ‘Lilikoi’ [title track to her debut album], I was kind of brokenhearted as far as love goes,” Fuga says. “I got concerned, it was like these thoughts that were getting me down weren’t my own thoughts, but other peoples thoughts about me. And I realized that I had to put a stop to that.” Talking on the phone with Fuga, I got a mean case of chicken skin. She’s soulful and poetic but still has a great sense of humor. We talked story about life for women, like how sometimes you choose not to go someplace cool

because you feel like you have to stay home and do something practical like laundry. And when did “girls night out” turn into getting wasted at the club to booty music? “It’s called ‘Lilikoi’ [Foundation] because I talk about how women need to take care of themselves first,” she says. “I see the lo‘i–which is me, myself. The fishpond is always built at the mouth of the stream and the nutrients flow from the lo‘i into the pond to make it rich and healthy. Then when the little fish swim through the makaha [sluice gate] to eat the nutrients from the lo‘i they get too fat to swim out. Basically it means that people are attracted to confidence and that happiness is very attractive. But for that to happen, I knew I had to work on me first.” Fuga envisions a “Lilikoi House”—a place where women can hang out, take classes, have office space, and talk story. And she’s taking the first steps to nurturing the foundation that will support it.
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
“I see big open spaces,” Fuga says. “I want a kitchen where women can cook and a big ‘Lilikoi Closet’ where people can donate clothes and women can come and take what they want and need. I picture a backyard with a clothesline and some washers because I never want someone to not be able to come to a class because the gotta stay home and wash clothes. You know? Come do laundry and better yourself.” What’s more, Fuga doesn’t want there to be financial requirements on who can come to the Lilikoi House. “You don’t have to be rich, you don’t have to be poor,” she says. “Just be a woman.” MTW

O-Shen 1 Rebel I like O-shen. Before I’d ever heard his name I grooved to some of his older music without even realizing it. I frequently bother my roommate, who’s got more knowledge of Hawaiian music in his pinky finger than I’ve got in my entire body, by asking “Ooh, who’s this?” every time O-shen’s deep voice pops up on his playlist. Now I have vivid daydreams where O-shen spies me sitting on a deserted beach with a flower behind my ear and falls madly in love with me. I am so totally kicking myself for not calling in sick to work last month when he played a show at the Hard Rock Café. These days, 1 Rebel is permanently pouring from the speakers of my island cruiser on my early morning drives from Lahaina to Wailuku three times a week. 1 Rebel is a great blend of the elements of roots reggae rhythms, chill Jahwaiian acoustics and R & B beats. He sings in Hawaiian, Papua New Guinea pidgin and English–a mix about as complex as his own origins. Missionary parents in the jungles of Papua New Guinea raised O-shen. He didn’t speak English well until moving to mainland America, which is also where he picked up his rap and R&B influences. Then he moved to Hawai‘i… and well, you get the picture. The result is an irresistible collection of tracts, ranging from the very danceable “Girls,” featuring reggae guru Elephant Man, to the tranquil (and daydream-inducing) Pacific Island vibes of “Anapanapa.” O-shen introduces his album by singing “Music is a weapon of mass instruction” in his title tract, “1 Rebel.” Many of the lyrics follow in this Jamaican style, speaking on cultural identity and human rights for indigenous people, such as those on the reggaefied “Revolutionary Soldiers” and “Babylon Dread,” featuring Bunny Rugs from 3rd World. Outspoken is a good word to describe O-shen’s lyrics, and his boldness culminates in “Never Seen A Ghetto” when he claims that real poverty is only found in third world nations and that we Americans, with all our clean water, could never understand true ghetto life. Then there are the love songs. There’s the soft-spoken, soulful “Lady Lover” and the sweetly romantic “Aiwara,” an acoustic lament of the one who got away. To end the album on a ukulele-infused Hawaiian note, he gives us “Anapanapa”– the song that puts me right back into that deserted island fantasy. MTW

BIG SHOWS Watching Birth - Sept 1, 15 & 29. This play by Karen Brody is based on real birth stories a la the wildy popular “Vagina Monologues.” From the warm and fuzzy to the heartbreaking, eight Maui women, including popular Mana’o FM radio personality Kathy “Tita” Collins, will perform the stories to benefit Women Who Care, an organization that is dedicated to empowering women in need. I’ll be there to see how many men in the audience can resist squirming during the vivid portrayals of life’s greatest miracle. Tickets: $25, $20. 5 p.m., Iao Theater, 283-3500. Reservoir Dogs - Sept 7, 8 & 9. I’m very interested to see how this brilliant American noir film has been adapted for the stage. In true Quentin Tarantino style, the movie had a non-linear story line and so much violent crime it made your head spin. I had to watch it three times just to get the gist. Basically, it’s the story of what happens before and after a badly botched jewel heist. Tickets: $20, $15. 7:30 p.m., Iao Theater, 344-5367 Minyo Matsuri - Sunday, Sept 9. 150 dancers from Japan and 50 from Maui will come together in colorful costume to perform the recital Minyo Matsuri for the 30th anniversary of Nakayama Minyo-Kai Hawai’i Shibu. The afternoon will be filled with several beautiful folk dances from the various prefectures of Japan under the leadership of sensei Mrs Ken Tasaka. Tickets $20. 1 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC, 242-7469. Lilikoi Fair - Sunday, Sept 9. At this event celebrating the empowerment of women through culture, art and music there will be plenty of lady-driven entertainment, including Paula Fuga, Micky Huihui, female vocalist for the roots reggae band Ooklah The Moc, Lawa with sassy female vocalist Kahala Smith, and touring songstress Sparlah Swa from New York. There will also be a fashion show to lure the ladies, with pieces from three female designers, and a good portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lilikoi Foundation, a non-profit that supports women in transition. Tickets: $25. 4 p.m., Mulligan’s on the Blue, Wailea, 874-1311.
TICKETS ON SALE Coconut Cabaret - Thur., Sept 13. Manhattan Mama Productions continues their monthly avantgarde comedy acts with “The Asian Double Diva Show,” featuring the hilarious Roy Cruz from LA and local funny girl Ariana, who recently moved to LA from Oahu. Be warned: this show may contain explicit and risque material. Well, I should certainly hope so! Tickets: $20. 7:30 p.m., McCoy Studio Theater, MACC, 242-7469. “How Far is Heaven?” - Fri., Sept. 21. Grammy winners Los Lonely Boys are bringing

their“Texican” sound here on their whirlwind summer tour for their sophmore album”Sacred.” Hermanos Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza have played their electric blues/rock/latin fusion music on stages with big names like Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones and Carlos Santana, and this time they’ll share the spotlight with Hawaiian songwriter John Cruz, who’s also got an album on the way. Great, now I’m going to be singing “Heaven” in the shower for weeks! Tickets: $55, $50, $45. 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC, 242-7469. MauiFEST - Sat., Sept 15. There will be plenty of free films, great music and ono food at the Moloka’i Film Festival. A few of this year’s flicks are: “The Shimmering,” “Heart of a Soul Surfer” and “Hawaii: Message in the Waves.” Live music will include slack key master Cindy Combs and Grammy winners John Keawe and Keoki Kahumoku. Also look forward to hula performances by Ulalena performers. Free. 4-11 p.m., Kaunakakai Ball Park, Moloka’i, www.mauifest.net. Roundup Barbeque and Silent Auction Sat, Sept 15. The Maui Costal Land Trust is throwing a paniolo-themed party with plenty of traditional western and vegetarian eats and great country music. Get roping lessons from Hall of Fame cowgirl Rose Cambra Freitas while supporting the mission of the trust to protect Maui County costal lands. Enjoy the music of Grammy winning slack key guitar master George Kahumoku, Jr. and dance to the Country Nights band. Tickets $50, 6 p.m., Maui Tropical Plantation, 244-5263 Aerosmith - Wed., Sept 26. Sure, the “Bad Boys from Boston” were rocking skin-tight jeans and big hair on stage before I was even born, and, yeah, they had most of their major hits before I hit puberty, but I can still rock out on the air guitar and lipsynch to “Sweet Emotion” and “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” with the best of them. Probably better than you can. They’ll only be playing here on Maui and this has gotta be the biggest show of the year, so don’t miss your chance to see Steven Tyler’s chops in all their horriffic glory. Tickets: $125, $85: reserved seating; $65: general admission. 7 p.m., War Memorial Stadium. MACC 242-7469. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) One of my favorite Virgos was born on September 11th, decades before it became infamous in 2001. Now her birthday is completely eclipsed. I reckon she ought to change it, just as you should do what you can to escape whatever’s keeping you from having a special day of your own. Virgos suck at taking time for themselves, and you’re so unstintingly generous that it’s hard for us to get a good deed in edgewise. Let us give you a day (at least) that’s devoted to your happiness and wellbeing. A birthday is a convenient and familiar excuse to do just that, so make sure (by whatever means) yours falls on a day when nothing else will get in the way.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You haven’t lost your game, though it may feel like it. It’s just that your ruling planet (Venus) is in retrograde, moving backwards and fouling up even your most tried-and-true techniques for charming people and getting things done. Luckily, Venus is set to pull out of that depressing slump on the 7th, and all your old tricks should start working again (assuming they ever did)—if, that is, you haven’t let self-doubt settle in under your skin. That would botch all your best-laid plans far more effectively than any measly astrological forces ever could.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) According to Biblical apocrypha, the Grigori were angels who rebelled against God. They had sex with humans (giving birth to giants called Nephilim) and taught people all the stuff that God wanted kept secret from them, like the arts of cosmetics and war. I understand why God might have wanted to keep his children innocent forever, but every kid needs a rebellious big brother or wild aunt who’ll teach him to smoke pot and listen to decent music. Some of you Scorpios, like the Old Testament God, can sometimes be a bit jealous regarding your partners, children, and even friends and resent it when they’re exposed to things you don’t approve of. It is, however, inevitable. Resisting it will only lead to more rebellion. I suggest that even if you can’t exactly support and enable this kind of thing, at least get out of the way.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) People who are able to perform prodigious feats of memory are occasionally simply quite gifted, but more often have simply mastered intelligent tricks that help their brains better retain long strings of information. You’ve relied on your natural talents more often than is wise, so you’ve failed to develop the kinds of skills that help less gifted people keep up. Imagine how much you could accomplish if you picked up a few of those kinds of tricks, ones that might magnify or build upon the talents you’ve already got.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Available
Most of the people you know respect you. Most of them probably like you too, but how many of them know you like them? How many actually feel close to you? I know you’re a private (and busy) person, but do yourself a kindness and open up a little this week, would you? It’s not necessary for success, nor even necessarily for your happiness (though I’d bet it’d make your life feel richer). However, can you deny that it would raise the sum total of joy in the lives of those around you? I think it would, and there’s no good reason to deny them that, is there?
at more
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) What if children were taught to truly value difference, creativity, and independent thought? They are, superficially, but the underlying lessons they learn are more about conformity and toeing the line. Remember: “Which of these things is not like the other? Which of these things does not belong?” Imagine how great it might be if both cooperation and extreme individuality were widely encouraged and celebrated, rather than an emphasis being placed on “fitting in.” “Normal” and “average” are boring. This week, do what you can to make sure the extraordinary and unusual get the kind of validation they deserve.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Sometimes being sick isn’t such a bad thing. Having a cold, for instance, can be an excuse to wallow in bed, play hooky from work, and do the things you really want to do, guilt-free. Some Pisces even make themselves sick simply to acquire such an excuse. This, however, shouldn’t be necessary. You simply need occasional periods of intense downtime, and you shouldn’t have to make yourself physically ill to get them. Do what you’ve got to do to get what you need, but surely there’s a way without resorting to such extreme measures.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You can’t quantify love, and asking those who care about you to do so just isn’t fair. I know sometimes you simply want some kind of proof that people really give a shit, but pushing them to extremes so they’ll “prove it,’ is a terribly bad idea. Asking for sacrifices as demonstration of fidelity was petty and horrible even when the Old Testament God did it; how much better do you think it would make you look? Loads of love is about trust and faith, and if you really require proof of that, consider the possibility that maybe you’re simply looking for love in the wrong places.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) True courage is doing whatever’s right regardless of whether anyone will know about it. True generosity is the same; giving a gift with an expectation of anything—even a thank you—isn’t quite as altruistic as giving one anonymously, so the beneficiary would never even know where it came from. How well-rooted are your principles? Studies about altruism show that for most people doing what’s right often depends on whether or not other people will know about or acknowledge it. This week, try to do the right thing in a way that takes social factors out of the equation. Make praise, recognition, and appreciation irrelevant.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) It’s one thing to live in the moment, Gemini, but it’s another thing to fail to prepare for your own future. I don’t even mean specifics, necessarily; I mean that some of you are in denial about one of life’s basic truths: everything changes. You won’t be able to continue on as you have indefinitely, whether it comes to your sex or love life, your job, your looks. Even your habits will have to change. A smart Gemini plans for this. She gives herself some options. Have you done the same for yourself? If not, devote this week to coming up with some good ones.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You’ve heard of taking things one day at a time. Sometimes though, even that’s too much. You might have to resort to taking things one minute at a time, or even one second at a time. Concentrate on visualizing yourself on the other side of whatever miserable mud-pit you find yourself in, and just slog through it without looking too closely at just how much misery lies between you and that distant endpoint. How much can you handle? A second? A minute? Then take that on, and worry about the next minute when you have to. Eventually, you will get to the other side.

I used to read 3-5 books a week, but in recent years I’ve slowed down. Now I only read 3-5 books a month. I miss it, especially since my book-buying habits haven’t slowed down as much as my reading habits–I now have a towering stack of books waiting to be read. Your mental habits or proclivities have also recently diverged from what you actually do in real life. Whether it’s a stack of unused condoms, unanswered emails, or unread books that’s starting to haunt you, a change is necessary. Maybe you need to make room for your old habits, or else acknowledge that other things have really and truly shown up to take their place. Either way, see what you can do this week to bring your real life back into synch with your mental one.

To Boob or Not to Boob? Mom? You need some new boobs. I know. And by the way, you’re grounded. –Recent conversation with my six-year-old. I must, I must, I must increase my bust! Well, at least the boob on the right. Nursing two kids who, for some godforsaken reason, preferred to dine on the left side has left me lopsided. Not that having a noticeable BLT (bigger left tit) has gone and ruined a centerfold worthy rack or anything–I’ve always been rather boobless. And okay with it, I might add. I mean, I’ve never had a guy not want to have sex with me because I have Kiera Knightly boobs. In fact, I’m pretty sure that some of them have been into it because of that. In the words of my fantastically hot Italian Stallion college fling, “Babe, you’re nuts but you’ve got a beautiful body.” Now I’m not saying that I don’t want bigger boobs. I would be totally into it if the boob fairy flew over in the middle of the night, waved her little wand and POOF!–I woke up with extremely perky, kinda jiggly full C’s. But an actual boob job where they put me under, cut me open and insert foreign objects into my chest? Possibly under my pectoral muscles? Not too sure about that, folks. In case you’re wondering, Hubby is 100 percent anti-boob job, although I’m pretty sure–taking into consideration his nudie-pic preferences—that he likes big boobs. A lot. I’ve thought about his conflicting stance on the new boob situation, and the problem is that he knows me too well. He knows that if I had monster tits, I’d pretty much walk around wearing just tassels. He’d rather suffer a life with a boobless wife than a life with one who wears hooker tops. Sometimes I don’t understand him. That, and he’s cheap. Speaking of cheap, and this is where it gets heated people, I recently learned about a website called MyFreeImplants.com. I kid you not, this is a sight where women chat and post “sexy” pictures for men in the hopes that they will donate to their personal boob job fund. It works. There are chicks out there (according to the site, about one per month) getting free tits. Let me remind you that the average boob job is 10 grand. Give me a goddamn freaking break. People should be donating to feed the hungry, help the homeless, give sight to the blind–whatever! But free boobs? Out of sheer curiosity, I signed up for a free membership to the site… as a man. I wanted to see what type of woman would do something like this. Immediately I got a message from a 22-year-old who–according to her profile– is five-foot-seven, and weighs 90 pounds. She claims that she suffers depression because she’s flat chested and can’t save enough money to buy her own ta-ta’s because she has a young child. This chick doesn’t need boobs; she needs a cheeseburger and a shrink. Are these crazy insane bitches totally screwed up in the noggy? Let me guess: their mamas dressed them like a hoochies and airbrushed their pictures when they were kids, right? Like I said, I’m not anti-boob job. Although I know that if I put enough thought into it I could come up with a million and two reasons why it’s a horrible idea and why cosmetic surgery in general is an evil, twisted practice and should not under any circumstance be socially acceptable. But I’ll save that for another day. The bottom line is that these women are literally whoring themselves out for what they consider cosmetic gain. I was so infuriated after browsing this site that I called my husband to bitch. “Are you kidding me?” he said. “No! Isn’t that effing twisted?” “No way! That’s the greatest thing that I ever heard!” We got disconnected after that. Starr Begley thinks that Living Dead Girl has an awesome body and doesn’t need fake boobs. MTW
