FUNNY, BUT NOT HA HA FUNNY A minor typo, and a funny one, that my in-laws caught (because I’m from Manoa Valley) was the Favorite Radio Station on Maui (Best of Maui, July 26, 2007). Maui Time said it was Mano‘a, it’s suppose to be Mana‘o. Well, we know what radio station that person doesn’t listen to! And I personally think it’s about three radio stations that are very popular—it seems the kids like 103.3 FM and listen to Augie and then Shaggy! -Rodney Souza, via email

The Editor responds: Change the voicemail message?! My God, man, do have any idea what that requires? How many forms we have to fill out? I’ve read studies that show it’s actually easier to do a fullblown Environmental Impact Statement than—what’s this? Oh, I’ve just been told we updated the voicemail. So… there.
don’t hear this often enough: you guys are awesome. People should be sacrificing their newborns to you people. Nubile temple virgins should be throwing themselves at your offices, awaiting your every instruction. You know that movie 300? That movie with the mind-blowing action scenes and glorious ab-fest? It was really about how Maui Time came into power; not so much about the Battle of Thermopylae and its repercussions. Maui Time should be ruling the world with an iron fist and stiletto clad foot. Should be, that is. Alas, too many people are stupid and Maui Time Weekly’s greatness is not as revered as it should be. You all will have to content yourselves with the knowledge that you kick ass, that people actually do read what you write and that they actually do listen to what you say over the course of the podcast [Beyond the Ink]. Just saying. -Ynez Tongson, former Maui Time Weekly intern, via email
Hi, I just want to make a comment on your Aug. 30 column about the Maui Top 10 (The Maui 10). First, people here on Molokai, we don’t get your paper for a couple weeks afterwards, so I just received it. On “The Price is not Right” in the Maui Top 10, where you mention the price [of gas] has dropped to $3.58 in Wailuku—“the highest in the state”—well, here on Molokai it’s $3.89. Oh, it just dropped a few cents—it’s only $3.84.9. And Samantha Campos is still the Associate Editor or is it now Starr Begley? Change your answering machine. Thanks a lot—you’re doing a great job. -Anonymous, via voicemail

WHAT’S TRANSPARENCY, REALLY? You have to salute a corporation that has the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) carrying its water—or in this case, gasoline. According to the Sept. 13 Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the latest weekly gas price reports from the oil companies—including good ol’ Tesoro—are just as “vague” as ever. The reports show the wholesale price of gas on Oahu was a full dollar lower than the retail price, but not much else. The reason? “[S]ome prices and figures for inventory could not be published,” the paper reported. “Because there are only two oil refiners in the state, some information had to be kept confidential for competitive reasons, the PUC said.” Astonishing—and I thought the PUC existed for the benefit of the state’s consumers. How could I be so naïve?
HOTELS, NOTELS And in more bad news for the tourist industry, Dowling and ML&P drop a notch on news that hotel occupancy throughout the state is still dropping. According to a Sept. 4 online Pacific Business News posting, the occupancy rate on Maui is running at 70.1 percent—down four points from the same period last year. Over on Oahu, the rate is a little bit better—70.4 percent—but it was 76.4 percent this time last year. Oh, and room rates themselves are rising: of Kauai, the Big Island, Oahu and Maui, guess who has the most expensive average room rate? You’re exactly right: we do, at $231 a night! The next priciest island would be Kauai, with an average room rate of $197 a night. MTW

Les is More
‘A Major Problem’
How a cultural specialist became the Superferry hearings’ unsung hero At the end of a long first week of testimony in Judge Joseph Cardoza’s Circuit Court hearings on Hawai‘i Superferry, Leslie Kuloloio of Kahului took the witness stand. His testimony as a fisherman and cultural practitioner went unreported in the media, but made a great impact on those listening in the gallery. “Uncle Les” was the third kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian) to testify as to whether Hawai‘i Superferry should operate their inter-island fast-ferry service while preparing a Supreme Court-ordered Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). (Like Uncle Les, I was on call most of the week. I testified at the end of the day on Friday as a witness to the Mayor’s Office and Maui County’s position dating back three years that a full EIS should be required for Hawai‘i Superferry and Kahului Harbor impacts.) Earlier, Iokepa Naeole spoke of his own childhood growing up and around Kahului Harbor, and of his Hawaiian Outdoor Education (HOE) program—a hands-on program that teaches 16 children how to paddle, surf and fish. Naeole once told me that when ‘Iao Stream ran to the sea without any diversions or concrete waterways, Kahului Harbor was fed by the fresh water of underground springs. His father said it was possible for a person to dive to the bottom, open his mouth and drink the upwelling fresh water. Kema Kanaka‘ole of Hana was also concerned about the Superferry’s impacts. He said people in the Hana ahupua‘a (region) are “scared” of the Oahu passengers that will be driving to their area to hunt and fish. Kanaka‘ole’s wife and two children joined him in court; they wore bright red “East Side Hui” t-shirts, contrasting sharply with the blue Superferry logo shirts worn by the company employees watching the deliberations. Kanaka‘ole said he formed the Hui to educated visitors how to maintain the area’s ecosystem balance, which they rely on for subsistence fishing, gathering and subsistence hunting. Uncle Les had sat in the courtroom all week before taking the witness stand late Friday afternoon. Much of the hearings were tedious, as the State Attorney General’s counsel and

LC Watch He was specifically talking about Kihei Kalama Village (KKV), but during the Sept. 12 Maui County Liquor Commission hearing, Commissioner Ron McOmber absolutely nailed the fundamental paradox facing every liquor licensee in the county. In a brief discussion on the current security situation at KKV with Gus Hoeft of Bada Bing and Dog & Duck Pub—both located in controversial shopping plaza—McOmber got a bit nostalgic over the old days when bar owners could give drunken customers coffee to sober them up. “But you can’t do that anymore,” McOmber said, pointing out that nowadays, LC rules prohibited bar staff from keeping intoxicated customers on the property. Of course, when these customers leave the establishment, McOmber noted, they become a problem facing the Maui Police Department. “This is a major problem,” McOmber said. Later in the hearing, Liquor Commission chairwoman Frances Meshulam seconded McOmber’s comments.
Uncle Les outside the courthouse
Superferry’s lawyers objected to many lines of questioning from attorney Isaac Hall, working on behalf of three Maui environmental groups pushing for an EIS. But when Kuloloio took the stand, the room quieted to a hush. Defense lawyers respectfully remained seated. In customary Hawaiian fashion, Uncle Les described his lineage, sharing that his genealogy can be traced back 500 years. His family name traces to names of the ocean and fish, not Ali‘i names. Kuloloi‘o translates to “mind of the upright fish” as well as place names throughout the islands, including the Honolulu Harbor area, when it was still a vital reef and fishing grounds. He said his lineage is part of the old system of papa kai ‘ohana, or families of the sea. Citing the cosmology of the Kumulipo, or creation chant, which links all the elements, he said, “Our ancestors come from the deepest depths of the ocean.” Uncle Les said he’s familiar with fisheries on the dry and wet sides of the island. His mother’s side of the family ranged from the Wailuku ahupua‘a to Hamakualoa, while his dad’s side encompassed shoreline areas from Ma‘alaea to La Perouse, including Kaho‘olawe. The maka ‘ainana were the traditional “eyes of the land.” As coastal inhabitants, they held knowledge of the resources of each

ahupua‘a stretching from the mountains to the sea. “I’ve been a subsistence fisherman and cultural practitioner for the past fifty years,” Kuloloio said, now a youthful 66 years old. He related that the near-shore fisheries from Hulu Point (near Waihe‘e) to Ho‘okipa Park “subsidized the deep sea fisheries… I’m very concerned of the see HERO, page 11
In the by-the-book world of the LC, bar owners and staff are constantly monitoring all their customers, ejecting anyone at the first sign of intoxication. There is no sober-up grace period, in which a drunken customer is allowed to sit at the bar and drink water or coffee—any and every intoxicated customer must leave the premises immediately, or the establishment could face stiff fines and license suspensions. But in the real world, those tossed from bars for intoxication get into fights in parking lots or attempt to drive drunk. Indeed, MPD stats show a number of drunken fights in the KKV area throughout July and August of this year, but McOmber’s “major problem” goes far beyond South Maui’s densest concentration of bars. And it will continue until the LC finds a way that allows licensees to deal with intoxicated customers in a way that doesn’t endanger the public.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Army officer Bryan Hilferty, a volunteer Little League umpire in Alexandria, Va., complained to The Washington Post in July that when he requested a copy of the League rulebook (to help him be a better umpire), he was turned down. Hilferty, who has access to classified information in his job at the Pentagon, was told that the Little League restricts its rulebooks, on a “need to know” basis, so as not to invite litigation, and that Hilferty did not qualify.
NORWAY IS COOL Norwegian Correctional Services revealed in August that 20 percent of convicted criminals who are given reporting dates to begin their sentences (a total of 1,799 last year) sim-
ply do not show up. The problem is compounded by the fact that Norway has no separate law requiring them to report. Said a regional prison director, “It’s difficult to make plans for the prison terms when we have no idea who will show up and who won’t.”
NAUGHTY TV, HAWAI`I STYLE The Federal Communications Commission famously imposed heavy fines for “indecency” against CBS for the brief, inadvertent glimpse it offered of Janet Jackson’s right breast during the 2004 Super Bowl. But the same “indecency”-concerned agency issued a routine official notice in July listing call letters of TV stations it had recently approved, including, for a proposed station in Honolulu, KUNT. (The applicant, headquartered in Skokie, Ill., withdrew the requested letters when the Honolulu StarBulletin publicized the FCC’s notice.)

Serena Yen, a member of the 24 Hour Fitness gym in Houston complained to KTRK-TV in July that she had been inadvertently shut inside recently at about midnight while using an upstairs exercise machine, when employees locked up for the night. A spokesman at the company’s headquarters said that “24 Hour” does not refer to the hours of operation.
BRAND-NEW FETISHES Verle Dills, 60, was arrested in Sioux Falls, S.D., in July after police found numerous homemade videos of Dills having sex in public with “traffic signs.” And Jeff Doland of Uniontown, Ohio, was arrested in July, caught in an Internet sting after he flew to Miami thinking he had arranged to pay a “mother” to let him photograph her two adolescent daughters while she periodically pushed them underwater because he “liked watching the bubbles.” MTW

“I wouldn’t see anything wrong with a woman President,” Democrat Patsy Mink said after her 1964 election to Congress. Dr. Edgar Berman, Hubert Humphrey’s personal physician and confidant, sees plenty wrong with a female Chief Executive… “Suppose,” he speculated, “that we had a menopausal woman President who had to make the decision of the Bay of Pigs or the Russian contretemps with Cuba at the time?” She might be “subject to the curious mental aberrations of that age group.” -From “Hormones in the White House,” Time Magazine, Aug. 10, 1970

Brian Blair, now a county commissioner in Tampa, Fla., asserted in a 2002 lawsuit that he had been forced into retirement from his previous career as a professional wrestler after he tripped over a tray of dishes and hurt himself at a Carrabba’s restaurant. Blair announced in August 2007 that a settlement had been reached with Carrabba’s, and thus he would not explain (according to a deposition cited by Carrabba’s attorneys) how the “career-ending” injury allowed him to keep lucrative wrestling dates in Japan months after he fell, or how he registered a .089 blood-alcohol reading that evening even though he admitted to only one sip of wine, or how a sober professional wrestler accustomed to being thrown across a ring could be hurt so badly by a simple fall, or how a politician who generally abides a pro-business, anti-lawsuit philosophy could have initiated such litigation.

and, apparently, imu rock spots. But the AG’s office? Ultimately, the AG and Awo work for the same boss—that would be Governor/Superferry booster Linda Lingle—so their moves to keep Awo from talking about the Superferry’s actual environmental impacts look, well, really, REALLY bad. Then again, this same administration is also trying to fast-track the EIS—according to today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin, state Transportation Department officials have even asked if they can ignore Hawai‘i’s procurement laws and give a million-dollar, no-bid contract to the firm Belt-Collins to do a “determination on the impact of ferry operation at the harbor [in Kahului] and whether the use of the state facility will necessitate further study and mitigation measures.” Tell me—are there any state laws the Lingle Administration does want to enforce?
Damn librarians!
THURSDAY, Sept. 13
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 12 Can you tell the Lingle Adminstration’s heart isn’t in the Superferry Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)? Does it show that they would rather just forget about the whole thing, unanimous Hawai`i Supreme Court ruling or not? I mean, on Tuesday Superferry attorneys—backed by guys from the state Attorney General’s office—tried to keep Randy Awo, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) chief conservation enforcement officer, from testifying before Judge Joseph Cardoza about the alleged Oahu imu rock smuggling operation he and his agents busted open the day the Superferry came to Maui. I can understand the Superferry lawyer’s hesitance to hear Awo—his actions give tremendous credibility to residents worried that the Superferry will speed the trampling of secret fishing, surf

So this morning Fred Guzman opened his morning radio show (The Talk of Maui, Fox News 900, KNUI) with his concerns that we as Americans were getting a little too blasé about civil rights—a little too quick to hand them over in exchange for security. I don’t know why he’d be concerned about this, unless he read yesterday’s Associated Press story on the state Board of Education Special Programs Committee’s decision to all school administrators to use drug-sniffing dogs and carry out “unannounced” locker searches. “We support any type of action or initiative that will deter the whole notion of having drugs on campus,” Valerie Sonoda of the Hawai`i State Parent Teacher Student Association told the committee, according to the AP. Since drugs are obviously the greatest threat to human history since Hitler, Stalin and galloping dandruff, obviously we should send in the dogs and bust open the lockers whenever the principal feels like it and, oh, what the hell—let’s also censor the school paper, expel students for dress code violations and ring the campus with metal detectors, armed guards and more dogs, except these will kind of look like Hitler and will have galloping dandruff. Now that sounds like a safe, drug-free place for our kids to learn about stuff like the Bill of Rights and Martin Luther King, Jr.

You know who’s the big winner in all the chaos over the Superferry, right? Cary & Eddie’s Hideway in Kahului, that’s who. Have you traveled through the restriped intersection of Pu‘unene and Ka‘ahumanu? If you want to turn left from Pu‘unene onto Ka‘ahumanu and you’re not too careful, you’re going to end up in the dedicated lane that heads straight into both the Superferry entrance and the Hideaway. Since few cars these days are headed to the Superferry, that means the potential for tons of new business for Cary & Eddie’s! They can’t lose… unless Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. executives make good on their threat to leave the state if they’re forced to stand down for the EIS preparation. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, Superferry bosses “have told the state Senate they need to know within the next six weeks whether they can operate or they have to leave the islands.” If that happens, the state might just go ahead and re-re-stripe the Pu‘unene intersection to the way it used to be and that would be terrible! Well, for Cary and Eddie’s...

SUNDAY, Sept. 16 Man, Hawai‘i is on the cutting edge for civil rights—and I do mean edge. And you thought drug-sniffing dogs in the schools were all we had to worry about. Not even close! “Hawaii now has the dubious distinction of being the first state ever to subject its teachers to a blanket policy of random drug testing,” American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) official Graham Boyd said in a recent press release from the organization’s state chapter. Needless to say, the ACLU finds random drug testing of anyone—including librarians—to be offensive. But he, we don’t care anymore about civil rights, so this isn’t a problem, right?
MONDAY, Sept. 17 Kids are our future, you know. Well, them and the librarians.
TUESDAY, Sept. 18 This just in: the state now says it wants competitive bids for an EIS on Superferry harbor improvements. Isn’t life grand? Anthony Pignataro did speak up when they came for the librarians, even though he was not a librarian. MTW

FRIDAY, Sept. 14
Eddie’s after all: with all the contempt for irony we’ve come to expect from desperate public officials, Governor Lingle has asked the state Legislature to hold a special session to pass a special law granting a special exemption to Hawai‘i Superferry, Inc., allowing the company to run their fast auto ferry service as usual while state officials do an EIS on their fast auto ferry service, according to today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin. “The court is not the last say,” Lingle told the paper. “It is the opinion of the court at that time. I don’t think anybody should feel that there is anything wrong with the Legislature passing a law to overturn what the court said.” Woohoo! For years now, Lingle and her minions have been whining that asking for a Superferry EIS was “singling out” the company, since (much slower) cruise ships and freighters never had to do environmental studies. But now, given the Hawai‘i Supreme Court’s recent unanimous ruling calling for an EIS, Lingle is now singling out the Superferry for special treatment. Show of hands of those surprised? Anyone?

impacts to our resources, from the deepest to the shallow.” Kuloloio said Kahului Harbor was a fishery before it was a harbor, and supplied the Kanaha fishpond (now a wetlands reserve). Hawaiians didn’t have harbors, he said: “They’d hapai (carry) their canoes onto land, so not to upset the fisheries.” When the sugar industry came, their railroad transportation systems disrupted the traditional practices of native Hawai‘i, building a coastal corridor from Haiku to Paia, Spreckelsville and Kahului. Where the makaha system, or sluice gate for the fishpond once stood, a railroad now sat. “It changed the whole ancestral, traditional system of my marine ancestors,” Kuloloio said. The kohala, or whales, were also part of that ocean family, and were called the “directors of life.” “I’m concerned about this new kind of super wa‘a or canoe that will bump, injure or kill the whales, my ocean ancestors,” Kuloloio said. Kuloloio believes those arriving on the Superferry will visit areas where Maui still has the kind of resources that may have vanished from Oahu. “So there’s a chance where the families, the residents of Oahu visiting Maui will come to the place to pick opihi, come to the place to pick the number and varieties of seaweed, limu that we have on Maui,” he said. “Of course, if my place has no more, come to the other place.” “Maui has to protect our resources,” Kuloloio said. “Every island has kuleana (responsibility) to protect their resources.” Protection of cultural places and practices is something Uncle Les has diligently pursued. He’s an original member of the Protect Kaho‘olawe ‘Ohana, dating back to 1976, and his grandfather and grand uncle helped establish place names there. He worked to preserve the King’s Trail in South Maui, establishing Hui Alanui O Makena in 1985, when Seibu—then the Japanese owners of Makena Resort—sought to close a portion of Old Makena Road. Uncle Les also worked with the Ritz-Carlton Resort towards proper treatment of hundreds of burials found in Kapalua. He worked to establish protocol and procedures for handling native Hawaiian iwi (bones) and artifacts, and is a member of the Maui-Lanai Islands Burial Council. He said he’s also honored to have been able to return the bones of
Hawaiian ancestors from the Bishop Museum to Moku Papapa, at the furthest reaches of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. Kuloloio also served on an advisory board that sought participation from indigenous people and people of color. From 1989 to their issuance of a final report in 1995, he met with the Federal Facilities Environmental Restoration Dialogue Committee (FFERDC). Mandated through the Departments of Defense and Energy, the FFERDC sought to establish proper guidelines and principles for handling pollution caused by the military. It helped set the rules for the Kaho‘olawe cleanup after decades of naval bombing practice. “I’m also concerned that Hawai‘i Superferry represents a supership that will change its role and purpose to a military use, without any input for Native Hawaiians in the process,” Kuloloio said. Kuloloio believes in-depth public involvement is necessary to resolve the questions about Hawai‘i Superferry, and to try to put things in balance as we change. “We need to begin the ancient ways of building and developing trust,” he said. “We don’t want to go back to the old ‘D.A.D.’ system of Decide, Announce and Defend. What we need is more studies through an EIS that will govern change of impacts on our ocean resources to feed future generations.” While Uncle Les passionately spoke in Circuit Court, he turned and directly addressed Judge Cardoza; most witnesses faced the lawyers questioning them. The gallery was very quiet during his testimony, except for the sniffles behind me of a local woman moved to tears by his words. At one point, he spoke of “quivering like a naka” (sea slug), which does so as a defense mechanism when threatened. “I’m quivering right now because I have no clear answers to what this Superferry will do to my deep sea ancestors, my marine life, my genealogical family,” he said. The connection is very important, he told me later. He learned traditional, cultural practices from his mother, who learned from her mother before that. “The naka and the loli [sea cucumber],” he said, “were among the first sea creatures ever put in my mouth. “We are all stakeholders,” he continued. “We need to follow na ho‘ohanohano i na kupuna, which is honoring the knowledge of our ancestors. We need public participation, especially from those who continue the lifestyles of their kupuna. I am afraid for imbalances, rapid changes, alterations. This is beyond the 2050 Plan, beyond GPAC [General Plan Advisory Committee], beyond highway planning. It’s about the way and lifestyles of our Hawaiian Islands.” MTW

ennis John Kucinich likes Maui. “I’ve been here at least once a year for the last five years,” Kucinich said during a visit last weekend. “There’s something very special about Maui that lends itself to creating a new world.” Of course, except for the delicate lei wrapped around his neck, his pin-stripe shirt and dark blue trousers looked way more Washington, D.C. than Wailuku. But can you really expect a visiting presidential candidate—even one as radical as U.S. Congressman Kucinich (D, Cleveland)—to dress down in front of a crowd of fans? In this time of perpetual, unending “War on Terror,” Kucinich—a longtime vegan, organized labor advocate and unapologetic leftist—has positioned himself as America’s premier peace activist. Referring to himself as “The Aloha Candidate” during a Sept. 14 KHNL interview, Kucinich and his wife Elizabeth have been touring Hawai‘i. Last weekend, they made a few stops on Maui, appearing at a rally, press conference and a couple fundraisers.
There are few more polarizing presidential candidates out there than Dennis Kucinich, though even today, few have heard of him. Dubbed “the one percent candidate” in 2003 by reporter Charles Bowden in the progressive magazine Mother Jones (“He’s a vegan and of course, no vegan can be elected president,” Bowen pointed out with more than a little sarcasm), Kucinich seems forever banished to the wings of the electoral stage. His MySpace page currently lists 31,234 friends, including musicians Avril Lavigne, Ani DiFranco and Willie Nelson—popular names, sure, but hardly those political analysts associate with future presidents. And though he gets considerable TV time (he’s a favorite whipping boy of Fox News in general and Sean Hannity in particular), Kucinich never came close to beating John Kerry—or Howard Dean, John Edwards, Wesley Clark, Joe Lieberman, Bob Graham or Richard Gephardt, for that matter—in the race for the 2004 Democratic nomination.
Hardship and Kucinich are old friends. When he was in the sixth grade, he spent five months—including Thanksgiving and Christmas—in an orphanage. Before he got elected to office, he worked as a caddie, sportswriter and municipal court clerk. He first won elected office at the age of 23 and became mayor of Cleveland at 31— the youngest person ever to run a major American city—then lost the job four years later after the city slid into bankruptcy, which voters blamed (unfairly, as it turned out) on his refusal to privatize the city’s power utility. Elected to the U.S. Congress in 1996, his financial disclosure forms show him to be one of the least wealthy representatives. Journalists repeatedly call him “diminutive” (he’s five-foot-seven), “Dennis the Menace” and, most unfairly, “unelectable.” When he ran for president in 2004, he won Maui County in the Hawai‘i Democratic Party Caucuses and not much else. While preparing for this story, I told four people I know—all young, educat-
ed and liberal—that I was going to write about Kucinich’s visit. Two had only a vague notion of who Kucinich was, and the other two had never heard of him at all, though one brightened when she heard he’s a vegan.
Sept. 14, 2007. 1:53 p.m. Akaku Studios, Kahului Billed as a live, televised press conference, there seem to be more activists in the audience than members of the press (confession: office work prevented me from attending, but I was able to email a few questions to producer Dave Coennen and watch the event on Akaku). Supposed to start at 1:15 in the afternoon, Kucinich was late coming from a Democratic Party luncheon, and the thing didn’t get started until nearly 2 p.m. Now I’ve seen Kucinich talk many times on C-Span, Fox News and when he campaigned on Maui three years ago, but until the press conference I’d forgotten how utterly depressing his uncompromising view of America and its troubles can be.

7:43 p.m. Maui Community College, Pa`ina Food Court As Kucinich slowly walked among the couple hundred people seated in the college’s cafeteria, talking in a slow, soft cadence without notes, I was struck by how much he reminded me of one of those self-help gurus you see on PBS during pledge drives. His words were lofty, even New Ageish. “[War is] a disconnection from our higher potential,” he told the mostly hippie crowd. “A misunderstanding of our higher purpose.” People nodded as Kucinich began using phrases like “the imperative of human unity” and “exploring the interi-

or geography of self.” There are few places in the U.S.—even including Cleveland—where Kucinich can talk like this in public without getting scoffs, guffaws and outright cries of “Commie!” But this is Kucinich’s ideological base. The Maui residents packed in the Pa‘ina Food Court are true believers—for them, Congress needs to impeach President Bush and get out of Iraq RIGHT NOW THIS SECOND. Don’t even ask them what they think of attacking Iran. When Kucinich came to his trademark line, “It’s not just the war in Iraq we must end—we must end the use of war as an instrument of policy!” the food court erupted in applause. As though he was feeding on the reaction, Kucinich’s cadence increased dramatically. “So many Americans have bought into this war on terror,” he said. “[We must] reject the fear that has been dropped over this country like some kind of dark cloth… I’m talking about an America that can be free of the violence [and]

reconnect with the world community.” As he often tells his audience (he mentioned it all three appearances I witnessed during his visit), Kucinich was the earliest voice in Congress denouncing Bush’s invasion of Iraq. He wants all the troops out now—not redeployed to Kuwait or Afghanistan, but out of the Middle East entirely—and he’s the only Democratic presidential candidate currently advocating such a move. In addition, he wants “the abolition of all nuclear weapons”—a position also not shared by his fellow Democratic candidates. Kucinich wants no more Halliburton contracts, private mercenary corporations or secret assassination plots against accused terrorists. In fact, Kucinich wants nothing less than to “create a world where children don’t have to worry about perishing in one of these wars based on fear.” Progressives (those on the right call them “socialists”) have not done well in American presidential politics pushing these kinds of messages. In 1972, as the

(“This is a racket!” he said, referring to the current system based on HMOs, pharmaceutical corporations and private hospitals. “It’s time that we ended it and reclaimed the health of this nation!”) • Immediate impeachment hearings against President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. (“Our constitution must be redeemed as a sacred text that binds us as a nation,” he said.) • Focusing prison incarceration on rehabilitation instead of punishment, and giving ex-cons who’ve paid their debt to society “the chance to vote again.” The last point is as radical as they come in American politics, despite the fact that 20 nations—including Canada and Israel—actually allow felons to vote while they’re still in prison. But in purely political terms, the issue is pure gold for Democrats, since most political analysts agree ex-cons would overwhelmingly vote Democratic. In fact, in their the recent book Locked Out: Felon Disenfranchisement and American Democracy, researchers Jeff Manza and Christopher Uggen claim that had the state of Florida allowed ex-cons who already served their prison terms to vote during the 2000 election, Al Gore would have taken the state by

“[I’m] rejecting war as an instrument of policy,” he said after describing all the things he’d do to end U.S. involvement not just in Iraq, but in all wars, counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations everywhere throughout the world. He even advocated ordering “the mercenaries”—private contractors—home and paying reparations to the Iraqi people. To Kucinich, the U.S. is an empire— the most economically and militarily powerful in history—irrespective of President Bush’s endless rhetoric about bringing democracy and freedom to the world. Kucinich wants nothing less than to break the back of the Pentagon’s control over the nation’s foreign policy. Since presidential campaigns have historically played on Americans’ desire for fantasy—such as Ronald Reagan’s many references, drawn from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, to the nation being a “shining city on a hill”— Kucinich’s repeated denouncing of American firepower and blood-letting can make for poor politicking. That he’s 100 percent correct is irrelevant— everywhere Kucinich goes he mentions that he was the first and, initially, only U.S. Congressman to vote against Bush’s invasion of Iraq. Even given the chaos and quagmire that grips us in that bloody country now, Kucinich is barely registering at the polls. Perhaps his wife can help. Back in 2004, Kucinich ran for president as a bachelor. But two years ago, he married the British-born Elizabeth Harper just a few months after meeting her (it’s her first marriage, his third). In a May 20 profile, the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sunday Times in London breathlessly reported that Kucinich’s wife is six feet tall, 31 years younger than her husband, has a master’s degree in international relations and sports a tongue stud. “I knew at once I really wanted to marry this man,” she told the paper. “When you know it, why hang around?” She is a striking woman with pale white skin and fire-red hair. I first saw her while watching a Daily Show bit in which Jon Stewart pointed out how the program director of a recent Democratic presidential candidates’ debate was obviously smitten with her, panning the camera to her first for reaction shots after Kucinich had answered a question, but then repeatedly returned to her face, even when other candidates were speaking. Kucinich and his wife sat close together during the Akaku press conference. Much of the time, they held hands, which the camera focused on now and then. “We need to stop meddling [in the world] and undermining democracy,” she said at one point, speaking in a measured, careful tone. “There is great hope in the world—we

Sept. 15, 9:01 a.m. Maui Time offices, Wailuku Kucinich in many ways is like the movie Patton. The film shows the tumultuous, violent career of General George S. Patton during World War II so well that both war-mongers and pacifists love it. I was reminded of this while checking my email. One of this morning’s messages, sent anonymously, contained nothing more than a link to the web address www.kucinich.com. Clicking it, I was presented with the word “TRAITOR” printed in bold red letters across a picture of a smiling Kucinich. Below that was another link, this time to a You Tube video. Running about eight minutes, the video—posted Sept. 15 by Rightangleblog, which bills itself as “the most popular conservative blog in Ohio”–is an obviously edited version of a recent interview with Kucinich in Syria. During the interview, Kucinich talks about a recent talk he had
with Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad about Iraq and the chance for Middle Eastern peace. “I believe that Syria has a very important role to play in bringing about stability,” Kucinich told the unidentified interviewer, who spoke with a thick British accent. “The United States must end the occupation [of Iraq], close the bases and bring the troops home.” From the video, it’s hard to tell exactly what was “traitorous” about the interview. The fact that he wants to end the war in Iraq? His willingness to treat Syrian President Assad like just another world leader? His use of the word “refugee” to describe the million and a half Iraqis who fled to Syria to escape the war? Or the fact that he has the temerity to say all this in Syria—a country the Bush Administration considers friendly to terrorists? In fact, there’s actually little in the interview that’s different from Kucinich’s standard stump speech on the war. Kucinich could have shown the video at the MCC gathering the night before, and it’s likely the crowd would have given him a standing ovation.

Over the weekend, it’s gradually dawned on me that there might be a reason for Kucinich’s tremendous national unpopularity beyond his uncompromising leftwing views. His appearance on the stage at today’s Stand for Children Rally at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center only reinforced that view. In terms of appearances by the candidate, this one barely qualifies, since Kucinich and his wife only spent about five minutes on
stage. But in that time, Kucinich referred to three separate pieces of legislation he’d introduced or co-sponsored in the last few years. At various times in his remarks, Kucinich told the mostly local crowd of about 50 that he’d authored a bill calling for “universal pre-kindergarten,” introduced HR 676, which calls for universal, not-for-profit healthcare and sponsored HR 808, which would establish a federal Department of Peace. He said the crowd should support Maui Family Support Services (the rally’s sponsor), but gave no reason why or described what they do, and soon after left the stage. Kucinich had been making various references to specific bills and policies all weekend. He brought up HR 676 during the KHNL interview Friday morning. During the Akaku press conference, in response to a question from Akaku CEO Jay April on how best to protect public access to the airwaves, Kucinich said he wanted to “go back to the spirit of the Federal Communication Act of 1934.” At MCC, he referred to HR 333 (impeaches Vice President Cheney), the aforementioned HR 676 and, in response to a question from a man who said he was a reformed drug addict suffering from mental illness, “The Mental Health Parity Act of 2007.” This tactic—answering emotional or even moral questions with references to arcane pieces of legislation—is very common among Democratic candidates. But according to the recent book The Political Brain by psychologist Drew Westen, it’s an e-ticket to disaster. Westen’s book is white-hot among Democratic Party officials and Washington insiders these days, and it’s easy to see why. Westen’s thesis is that voters make their decisions based on emotional instead of rational criteria. To use a simplistic but easily remembered example, given a choice
between a tough-talking, smirking quasi-cowboy who looks to his “heart” to make decisions (George W. Bush) and a Boston Brahmin who speaks in vague terms about the value of “public service” while ignoring sleazy television ads calling him a coward and traitor (John Kerry), voters will choose the cowboy every time, even if they disagree with his politics. The reason, according to Westen, is simple: the cowboy more closely resembles a human being. “We do not pay attention to arguments unless they engender our interest, enthusiasm, fear, anger, or contempt,” Westen wrote. “We are not moved by leaders with whom we do not feel an emotional resonance.” Candidates don’t build up emotional resonance with voters by quoting legislation. They do so by talking about their own experiences and feelings–by talking to voters the way one person talks to another. When asked about the nation’s dire healthcare crisis, Kucinich could have described his youth, when he was so poor he sometimes slept in the car. Or when the mental health question came up, he could have described hospitals he’d toured or patients he’d met. By my count, in all of Kucinich’s public appearances on Maui, he made just one emotionally resonating reference, and it was at MCC, where the crowd was so sympathetic they would have cheered him if he started reading names out of the phone book. Talking about the need to move America away from seeing military force as a solution to international crises, he spoke of a trip he and his wife took last year to Lebanon, which was still reeling from a brief but ferocious war with Israel. “We saw tens of thousands of structures flattened… just demolished,” he said. “Most of the arms [used by the Israelis] were purchased, or given, by the United States. And people were aware of it.” Kucinich said he and his wife traveled to a village one night that was so dark the only illumination came from his car’s headlights. The town square, he said, was now “a makeshift grave.” A sign placed on some rubble read, “America, this is your democracy.” Stunned at the sight of one young boy’s grave, Kucinich said he was comforted by one resident who, a few moments later, pointed out the graves of his entire family—killed, he said, in a bombing attack on the village. There’s no way to know if a Kucinich campaign focused on personal, emotional stories like that would win votes in moderate, middle America. Given the fact that voters twice elected George W. Bush despite his fundamentalist Christian, right-wing politics that lie far outside the mainstream of America, it certainly couldn’t hurt to try. MTW

Slip Me the Tongue

Adventuring into the delicious world of Izakaya Matsu ining out should be an adventure. You should be willing to try new things. Like tongue–cow’s tongue, to be more specific. Tastes like chicken. Okay, it tastes like beef. My celebration of tongue and other delicacies took place at a small Japanese establishment, located at the Azeka Plaza (makai side) in Kihei. It’s called Izakaya Matsu and it’s not your traditional sushi bar. In fact,
D
sushi makes up just a fraction of their interesting delicacies. I’m a huge sushi fan, so I’m pretty smug about the whole Japanese restaurant thing. I mean, once you know how to tell your tamago from your unagi, what’s the big deal? But I had the smug slapped right out of me when I looked at Izakaya Matsu’s menu. There was salmon skin salad, ika shiokara (salted squid), ochazuke (rice, salmon, salted plum and konbu), chijimi (Korean-style pancake) and beef tongue with salt, as well as lots of other not-so-exotic things like nigiri sushi, vegetable tempura, soft shell crab and miso butterfish. Shabu shabu—a soup in which you put thinly sliced beef or pork—is one of the specialties of the house. Loosely translated, shabu shabu means “swish swish,” which is the sound your soup makes when you move the meat back and forth. It’s meant for two or more and is prepared, by you, right at your table.
The sukiyaki, not to be confused with the shabu shabu, is another dish on the menu that’s meant to be shared. It’s meat, vegetables and sauce simmered in a skillet at your table. According to one of the owners, these are great dishes for a group of people—kinda like fondue, Japanese-style. And since there’s a minimum of two orders, you don’t eat these on your own. So if you’re there solo you’ll need to order something else off the menu.
Izakaya Matsu 1280 S. Kihei Rd., 874-0990. $
If you’re interested in libations as well as food, you’re in luck. They offer 13 different kinds of sake, ranging from a modest $7 a glass to $30. When serving it, they place a small glass in a little square box and fill it to the top so the sake spills over. Once you finish the glass, you pour anything
left in the box into the glass and then drink that. Sake’s not for everybody, but they also offer shochu. That drink is distilled, rather than fermented, so it packs more of a punch. It’s best served with salted plum. Beer and wine are available if these don’t appeal. The word “izakaya” actually translates as tavern or pub; in Japan, these places are known more as drinking establishments. But here on Maui, owners Mr. And Mrs. Hideharu Matsumoto and Chef Masa have created a Japanese pupu bar with the feel of a restaurant. While the sake was a bust for me (I’m not a fan), I did enjoy everything else I sampled: miso soup with clams; a slightly pickled-tasting spinach dish; yakitori sticks; vegetable tempura; sushi; and, of course, the beef tongue with salt. The servings were pupu style and the service was excellent. My only complaint? I should have really gone for it. I tried the tongue, but I wish I’d also tried the arabiki sausage, ami-yaki, ika shiokara… MTW

“Past the glowing orb of the moonlit sky…” Sunday (Sept. 23) from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the Wo Hing temple and museum, Lahaina [CELEBRATION] I love the moon. I love moon-bows. I love to howl at it and dance under it naked. I love memories of shivering in the cold damp air in the middle of a field while gazing up at its shiny, moony splendor. This year the Wo Hing Society and Lahaina Restoration Foundation will celebrate the Chinese Moon Festival. It’s said that the festival is good for reunions and romance. If lovers are apart from each other during the festival, they can still gaze at the moon and know that they’re connected spiritually, if not physically. On hand will be a Chinese Moon Festival display, mooncakes, souvenir items a lion dance and martial arts demonstrations by the Maui Chinese Martial Arts Academy. There will also be ancient Chinese musical performances played by Maui’s own Brandon Collins. Admission: $1. For more information call 661-5553. [STARR BEGLEY]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Starr Begley
International Day of Peace Friday (Sept. 21), 5 p.m. at the Studio Maui Movement Center in Haiku [CELEBRATION] In 1981, the United Nations established International Day of Peace to devote a specific day dedicated to the ideal of enjoying peace on earth. Come watch yoga teachers from around Maui—Ram Dass, Deeksha Givers of Maui, Geordie Jahner-studio owner and 5Rhythms ecstatic dance instructor—celebrate that original UN vision. The event is in collaboration with the Global Mala Project, which is a project uniting collective consciousness around the world. Shiva Rea, M.A., a renowned yoga and trance dance teacher, is the catalyst for the project and will host the hub event in Los Angeles. All hosts around the world on this day of peace will donate 100 percent of their proceeds to various non-profit organizations. The Studio Maui Movement Center is located in the Haiku Marketplace. For more information call 575-9390. [DANIELLE RUBIO]
Don’t OP (Over Pineapple) [EVENT] Is there such a thing as too much pineapple? I’d have to say no, but that’s just because I’m planning on overdosing on the sweet, sticky, gold stuff this weekend at the Maui Pineapple Festival and Homecoming. Everything there–the food, crafts and keiki playzone–will be pineapple-related. It’s also the public’s last chance ever to tour the Kahului pineapple cannery. And there will be a “Memory Lane” photo exhibit, live entertainment and complimentary tours of the Hali`imaile and Honolua plantations. Last year 5,000 people showed up to celebrate all things pineapple. Admission and parking are free. Visit www.pinefest for more info.

Music, Meows, Munchies Saturday (Sept 22) from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., St. John’s Episcopal Church, Keoka [FUNDRAISER/FESTIVAL] A unique mix of wild, exotic and domestic animals call the East Maui Animal Refuge (EMAR) home. A blind miniature horse, amputee owls, kitties with cancer and a deer with a broken back share the no kill, volunteer-run,non-profit animal rehabilitation center, affectionately known as the “Boo Boo Zoo.” Now caring for 300-400 of these exceptional critters at a time, many who would have no place at other Maui animal care establishments, is expensive. But this year EMAR is a beneficiary of the 25th Annual St. John’s Kula Festival. The festivities will include an enormous rummage sale, live and silent auctions, keiki activities, live entertainment, food, produce and the return of the oh-so-popular teahouse. You can help support the animals by donating rummage (no furniture, electronics or appliances, please) or by shopping, bidding, eating and generally enjoying yourself on the beautiful grounds of St. Johns. www.booboozoo.org for more info. DAY
Rump Shaker Wednesday (Sept 26), 9 p.m., Charley’s, Paia Thursday (Sept 27), 9 p.m., Casanova’s, Makawao [MUSIC] I feel it’s my duty to offer this warning to anyone and everyone who doesn’t like to dance, move, toe-tap, shake booty or otherwise enjoy great music: Do not go anywhere near Afro-Brazilian roots group SambaDa. Their music is infectious and playful, their energy is high and it’s damn near impossible not to get your groove on when you’re listening to their samba, funk, capoeira and reggae fusion songs. They’re here (first Hawaiian tour ever) to celebrate Brazilian Independence Day, after getting wild and crazy performing at carnivals up and down the California coast. Band leader and Brazilian native Papiba Godinho brings knowledge of Afro-Brazilian music while vocalist and master dancer Dandha Da Hora honors her Salvador Bahia culture with her exuberant moves. The entire band comes together to create music with a universal appeal. You could say SambaDa musically unites the Americas, blending the percussion styles of Central and South America with funk and reggae sounds. Don’t say I didn’t warn you–these shows are bound to be a hip swaying, rump shaking good time. $15 in advance, $20 at the door. www.sambada.com for more info. [JA]

SEPTEMBER 20, 2007
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
I was born at Maui Memorial Hospital at 4:20 in the morning. I weighed a mere four pounds, 13 ounces. My mother said that when we looked into each other’s eyes for the first time, she was a little creeped out–my eyes were like beady raisins, making me appear very old. I haven’t heard the gory details of my actual birth. The only information on the process comes from my aunty who said, “Are you kidding me? You were the size of a large turd. It didn’t take long.” By contrast, I’ve had two kids myself and I actually enjoy telling people all about it, even if the circumstances were less than perfect. Which is why I want to see Birth. On stage for it’s final show Sept. 29 at the Iao Theater, Birth is similar to The Vagina Monologues in that various women take the stage and tell their birth stories. Acclaimed playwright Karen Brody interviewed 118 women before penning the script. In 2006, after worldwide performances of Birth, critics hailed the play as “part of a global movement to make maternity care mother-friendly.” Proceeds from every show, no matter where it is performed, benefit motherfriendly charities. Here on Maui, Women Who Care will be benefit from ticket sales. Women Who Care encourages women to have empowered birth experiences and provides financial assistance to women in need. Robin Garrison, who founded the organization and is also directing the play, is a doula,
mother of four and aspiring midwife. “This play will make you laugh, cry and inspire you to make a difference in your community,” Garrison said. Eight Maui actresses, including Kathy “Tita” Collins, will portray the true tales of birth–from home births to cesareans. Both times I gave birth I ended up having cesareans, and it’s something that bothers me. Vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC) is not allowed on Maui. Since I ended up having to be cut open the first time around, I knew it was going to happen again unless I wanted to move to Oahu for part of my pregnancy. Along with the emotional issues from the surgery, I have a ton of actual physical scar tissues that pushes and pulls, reminding me that I didn’t “do it” the way nature intended. According to Childbirth.org, 23.8 percent of all births in the United States are done by cesarean, while the World Health Organization states that no region in the world should have a cesarean rate greater than 10-15 percent. Hopefully, through organizations like Women Who Care and eye-opening performances like Birth, our nation’s cesarean statistics will drop. One of my favorite stories from Birth is about the woman whose mantra during contractions is, “My body rocks, my body rocks…” She’s sweating and half crying, but hell-bent on sending herself a positive message. “My hope,” Brody said, “is that all women will believe their body rocks.” MTW
DA KINECALENDAR BIG SHOWS “How Far is Heaven?” - Friday, Sept. 21. Grammy winners Los Lonely Boys are bringing their“Texican” sound here on their whirlwind summer tour for their sophmore album Sacred. Hermanos Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza have played their electric blues/rock/latin fusion music on stages with big names like Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones and Carlos Santana, and this time they’ll share the spotlight with Hawaiian songwriter John Cruz. Great, now I’m going to be singing “Heaven” in the shower for weeks! Tickets: $55, $50, $45. 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC, 242-7469. Reservoir Dogs - Sept, 21, 22 & 23. I’m very interested to see how this brilliant American noir film has been adapted for the stage. In true Quentin Tarantino style, the movie has a non-linear story line and so much violent crime it makes your head spin. I had to watch it three times just to get the gist. Basically, it’s the story of what happens before and after a botched diamond heist. Tickets: $20, $15. 7:30 p.m., Iao Theater, 344-5367.

Ticket price includes food tastings and there will be a cash bar. Tickets: $50 in advance at Mana Foods, Anthony’s Coffee Shop and The Wine Corner. 5:30 p.m., www.pyccmaui.org for more info.
Aerosmith - Wednesday, Sept 26. Sure, the “Bad Boys from Boston” were rocking skin-tight jeans and big hair on stage before I was even born, and, yeah, they had most of their major hits before I hit puberty, but I can still rock out on the air guitar and lipsynch to “Sweet Emotion” and “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” with the best of them. Probably better than you can. They’ll only be playing here on Maui and this has gotta be the biggest show of the year, so don’t miss your chance to see Steven Tyler’s chops in all their horriffic glory. Tickets: $125, $85: reserved seating; $65: general admission. 7 p.m., War Memorial Stadium. MACC 242-7469.
Watching Birth - Sept 29. This play by Karen Brody is based on real birth stories a la the wildy popular Vagina Monologues. From the warm and fuzzy to the heartbreaking, eight Maui women, including popular Mana`o FM radio personality Kathy “Tita” Collins, will perform the stories to benefit Women Who Care, an organization that is dedicated to empowering women in need. I’ll be there to see how many men in the audience can resist squirming during the vivid portrayals of life’s greatest miracle. Tickets: $25, $20. 5 p.m., Iao Theater, 283-3500.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Take your own advice, damn it! You’re chock-full of wise counsel for your friends, but when it comes to yourself, you sometimes make astonishingly poor choices. I think the problem is you’re reluctant or unable to take the necessary step back from your own situation and view it with the dispassionate. Personally, I think you can separate yourself from the situation sufficiently to give yourself excellent advice, but if you really think you can’t—ask someone to do it for you. Choose the smartest person you know regarding this type of situation—someone who’s had a lot of success—and ask them what you should do. Then, by all means, regardless of your mixed emotions, do what they advise.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) For someone who’s so indecisive, you sure can be impatient. I’ve known Libras who suddenly decide they want a long-term lover (after ages of singlehood) and get frustrated when one doesn’t magically appear. Of course, part of the problem when you’re impatient is you’re not actually doing that much differently than you did before, so the openings through which change could come are few and far between. You want something new in your life, you’ve got to throw open a few big barn doors, put down some bait and see what comes waltzing in. Mostly you’re going to get the neighborhood riff-raff, but if you’re alert and open to possibilities you might just get what you’re wishing for—much sooner than you would, otherwise.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) “Solid as a rock,” is an almost meaningless phrase; according to modern physics, even stone is composed of mostly empty space. Most of what we perceive is actually a clever illusion that our minds interpret in a certain way just so we can make some kind of sense of the world and operate within it. You know this, but sometimes you can let your beliefs in your own self-generated illusions really drag you down and keep you from doing what you really want to do. Come on, Scorpio. You have a talent for cutting through other people’s bullshit, right down to the bone. This week, try slicing through some of your own. Afterwards, you might discover you can walk through walls.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) When a plant thinks it might die, it bursts into bloom. It uses up most or all of its remaining energy to produce flowers, which will in turn produce seeds. I understand that this is a side effect of what it’s actually trying to accomplish—the survival of its species—but I love that the floral response to stress creates beauty. Can you do the same? Try it. The more stressed out you get, the harder you should try to generate some original beauty to share with the world. I reckon that will make you feel a whole lot better; even if it doesn’t, it sure will make life nicer for the rest of us, and that can’t be a bad thing.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Just because you’ve walked quite a long ways down a certain path doesn’t mean you can’t switch routes and destinations now. Sure, feeling reluctant is normal, but you shouldn’t let your reluctance keep you from ultimately doing it. As far as we know, this is your one shot, your one life, your one chance to be happy. One of your strengths is what I call stick-to-it-iveness, but that can also be a weakness. Go ahead and think long and hard about your options before you give up something you’ve invested time and energy in. But there may come a time when it’s time to jump ship or go down with it (or just sail on, miserably). Hopefully you have the guts to do what you’ve got to do.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
CLASSIFIED LINE AD RATES
The reason you’re likely to obsess over ridiculous emotional bullshit is because you have too much free time inside your head. If you were busy solving the world’s problems, you wouldn’t have the opportunity to make yourself (and some of the people around you) nuts. Your brilliance can and should be put to good use, not this endless mental masturbation about things you can’t figure out or resolve. Ignore your own problems this week, as much as possible. Turn your attention to other people’s, and solving them. They’ll be grateful and feel better, and—weirdly enough—so will you.

Frequencies of: 1-8weeks $18/week* 9-26weeks $13/week* 27-52weeks $9/week* Additional lines are $3 per each Bold and/or caps are $3 per line *Does not apply to Backside or Adult Services. Please call for pricing details.
It’s just in line with your endlessly complex and self-contradicting nature that you are usually the most beloved among your friends, and also the one who causes the most aggravation, confusion, or frustration. We can’t help but like you; you’re so sweet and cuddly. But that’s not a blank check to just ride on your cuteness. You frustrate us because you’re the most talented person we know, and you’re doing the least with your talents. Exercise your brilliance or it’ll get soft and flabby. This week, if you can’t summon the motivation to do it for your own benefit, do it for us.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Tastes change. Yours certainly do. Remember that song you were so gung ho about three years ago? You’re cringing in embarrassment about that now. That bore you dated for so long is someone your friends are forbidden to even mention these days. Of course, some bands and people are in your life for the long haul. It’s just hard to tell in the moment how you’ll feel about them in years to come. Luckily, this week you should have an easier time telling whether whoever or whatever you’re currently enthusiastic about is a short-term fad, or an instant classic.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I don’t know if it’s true, but many of my massage therapist friends talk about how people “store” emotions in different parts of their body, creating isolated tension or even long-term problems. I reckon it’s an idea worth exploring, especially because you Bulls are notorious for holding certain emotions back and not expressing them. Where did they go? This week, turn hunter. Track down your lost and repressed feelings wherever they might be hiding—not to shoot down and kill them, but to capture and release them somewhere they’re free to roam without hurting anyone (especially you).
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’ve probably noticed already that sometimes things (both good and bad) happen in threes. You’re especially prone to notice triplets of this kind this week. A smart Gemini might be able to find some way to take advantage of this—by cashing in on the opportunities, or avoiding the negative stuff. You can’t be sure that something you experience will be echoed twice more, or what forms those echoes will take, but why not take a stab at putting yourself in (or out, as the case may be) their path? If you’re lucky, it might be the best thing you do this year.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) I wish I could tie you up and spank you—and not to be kinky! I’m pissed because you know that one of the choices you’re making is really wrong for you. It’s not even that pleasurable, and yet you’re making it nevertheless! Is it a desire for self-destruction? What’s it going to take to make you quit abusing yourself with your own actions? The world is harsh enough without you adding to your own burdens. Can you stop yourself, please? And if you can’t, will you please find someone who will?
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Sometimes a really good email message accidentally gets sorted into your junk mail folder, and you have to sort through all the penis enlargement and Viagra bullshit to find it. That happens to certain people, too. You meet them and for whatever reason, your brain files them in a category where they don’t belong—and one you don’t invest much time in. This week you may have a chance to discover that what looked like a bit of bogus “LOTTERY WINNER” spam, in human form, is actually the real thing. Take a chance and open it up.

RESTLESSNATIVE
BY STARR BEGLEY STARR@MAUITIME.COM
Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow My husband has been in Huntington Beach, California for exactly 198 hours and I am totally over it. I mean, in the beginning, I had big plans for myself while he was gone. I planned on an afternoon at the shooting range, an evening with Paula Fuga at Mulligan’s on the Blue, plowing through at least three novels, writing 80 pages of my own tome, catching up on Grey’s Anatomy, doing a little pole-dancing and polishing off three bottles of wine–two red, one white. None of this has happened. Instead, while my dear husband is off revamping an old car for an episode of Overhaulin’ with Chip Foose and a few perky female “Personal Assistants” he can’t help but talk about every damn time he phones, I’ve been dealing with a sick baby (our son spiked a temp of 105.3 degrees) and the subsequent loss of work hours that come along with it. Not to mention all the normal household duties that comes along with being a pseudo-single mom with raging PMS. Granted, things could be worse. My son’s brain could have turned into a little pot roast, and my husband could be screwing $20 hookers in Tijuana instead of

simply getting hammered at the hotel bar with said perky PA’s (What exactly do they assist him with, anyway?). How do I know everything’s okay and he’s not dabbling in any extra-marital hanky-panky?. At this point I’m going on faith and a little known Puerto Rican spell cast by my BFF. If his penis comes home withered and black, he’s going to have some explaining to do. But until he actually does come home and I have a chance to examine the goods, I’ve done what any reasonable woman in my situation would do: revolt against shaving my legs, devour bacon with every meal and cry during commercials. Also, I got a haircut. Let’s talk about this “haircut thing” a moment. Like many women, I’ve found that I cut or color my hair when I am stressed out or just generally sick of my life. I used to do it frequently. I’ve had a pixie cut, bob, shoulder-length tresses, waist-length mane. I’ve worn my hair in shades of black, purple, pink and this god-awful ehu color. But in the past three and a half years, I haven’t done a damn thing to it. But recently, I woke up one morning knowing that I was cutting my hair. Immediately. So I scheduled an appointment at Beauty Bar in Wailuku because pretty much all the women that I work with (Judy, Wendy, Samantha) all have a great sense of style and they go there. So I went, and I like-ey. At first, when I saw how much the lovely Dawn was snipping off of my strands, I started to hyperventilate. It took me a really long time to grow that stuff, and who cares if it’s dead and straggly? It’s my hair, for crying out loud. It turns out that Dawn knew what she was doing and I left with “bouncin’ and behavin’” healthy curls that made me feel instantly better. Perky PA’s, my ass. So anyway, life as a pseudo-single mom has definitely reminded me why I appreciate my husband. Granted, I’m a little irritated at him at the moment so I can’t think of what exactly I appreciate, but I just know that I do. Really, I do. Starr Begley is so not looking forward to taking out the trash tonight. MTW
