LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR WHO DOESN’T WANT A COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT PLAN? Mahalo for the great article on Honolua Bay (“The Hardest Part,” Sept. 13, 2007). However, I’d like to point out that Wayno Cochran is not the Vice President of the Save Honolua Coalition: he is just a board member. The saddest part about the degradation occurring at Honolua Bay is that the area is designated a marine life conservation district and should be afforded the highest level of protection, but currently there is no comprehensive management plan to address all the threats to this community treasure. I am also a board member of the Save Honolua Coalition and the present state of this area concerns us deeply. We have held over 25 public informational meetings to educate ourselves and the community about the myriad of issues involved in trying to “Save” Honolua and have decided to put public meetings on hold for the month of October to complete our draft management plan that Hannah Bernard has been kind enough to help us get started. I am excited at the progress we are making and look forward to presenting the plan to the public in November when we resume public meetings. -Tamara Paltin, Kahana

BANYAN MEMORIES I thoroughly enjoyed Rob Parsons’ Sept. 6, 2007 Rob Report (“30 Years on Maui”) with his reflections on the Maui of 1977. In his story, Parsons mentioned the banyan tree that once stood in the middle of the old open-air Kahului Airport terminal. Many of your readers will be surprised to learn that this very same banyan is the one that now graces the front entrance to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Pretty cool, eh? -Bruce Wheeler, Waikapu

PUMP DON’T DUMP IN OUR OCEAN WATERS!

BOYCOT T SEAFOOD FROM CANADA!

I was reading the paragraph entitled “Wood Nymphs?” (The Maui 10, Sept. 13, 2007) and I would just like to point out that although Maui Land & Pineapple Co. has gotten an Environmental Impact Statement for its Pulelehua project in July 2005, there were many key issues left unresolved such as water sources which may be contaminated and therefore may need to be treated, the possibility of toxic soil, the addition of more sewage to an already stink wastewater facility, four additional entrances to Honoapi‘ilani Hwy, etc. I think that before we change our community plan, we owe it to the entire West Maui community, especially the thousands of Hawaiian

Homes that will be built soon, to carefully examine the adverse effects and do our best to mitigate the impacts. If the project is worth doing, it is worth doing right. By the way a truly holistic community would look at the whole picture—not just the 310 acres within. -Ka‘aina Kealoha, Kahului

EH BRAH!

The other day I came home from work and found your shiny yellow SUV in my driveway, partially blocking the entrance. I asked you to move your car, and you said you’d “get around to it.” So then I had to ask very politely—I even said “please”—and still you didn’t move it. That’s when I had to threaten you with calling the cops. “Why you gonna call the cops?” you said, before adding, “We’re neighbors! Where’s the aloha spirit?” Brah, aloha spirit is when you give! Not when you take! I guarantee that if you came home and I was soaking in your front yard Jacuzzi, you would not be all Mr. Aloha. And about that “neighbors” line: I’ve lived next to you for over a year and you don’t even know my name. You’ve never said hi, even just once. So next time when I come home you better have your car parked in one of the five parking stalls that exist on your property or else I’m telling the county planning department about your illegal vacation rentals.

UNCONSCIONABLE! Maui Land & Pine moves up this week as it becomes a bit more likely that state officials will allow Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. to conduct interisland ferry service while preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). In fact, on Sept. 20 the Honolulu Advertiser editorialized that this is the only “rational” and “pragmatic” solution. “It’s unconscionable to allow government to continue sending mixed signal to permit applicants,” the paper editorialized. “Once again, the state is left with making the best of a sorry situation, and that can’t be allowed to continue.” To be fair, the Advertiser editorial did mention that allowing the Superferry to operate before an EIS is done “defeats the intent of the state’s environmental review law” and “sets an unfortunate precedent, allowing other permit seekers to request similar leeway,” but ultimately concludes that gutting the EIS law—which is designed to protect the public as much as the environment—is preferable to leaving “a dismal impression on companies that may seek to do business here.” And a pro-corporate message is always beneficial to ML&P, which invested a million bucks in the Superferry and has CEO David C. Cole sitting on the ferry’s board of directors.

LOW SCORE This would have been an even better week for Maui Land, but bad news from a recent Travel+Leisure magazine online poll kept it from rising more than one notch. Seems the company’s world-renowned Kapalua Resort is only the fourth best golf spot in the nation. Yup—Kapalua trails behind such golf Meccas as Pinehurst in North Carolina, Kiawah Island in South Carolina and even California’s Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach?! Wow. What did Kapalua ever do to Travel+Leisure readers? MTW

Tipping Point Reached Students, adults, politicos and environmentalists come together on Hawai‘i 2050 plan The beaches they sell to build their hotels/My father and I once knew/ Birds all along, sunlight at dawn/ Singing Waimanalo Blues -From Thor Wold and Liko Martin’s classic anthem “Waimanalo Blues” Nearly 1,000 people filled the Hilton Hawaiian Village ballroom in Waikiki last Saturday for the Hawai‘i 2050 Sustainability Summit, which unveiled the draft strategic plan for the state’s future. Even in the midst of the tourist Mecca associated with a garish excess of overdevelopment, there was cause for optimism. Backlash over the top-down planning decisions regarding Hawai‘i Superferry is coalescing broad segments of Neighbor Island communities frustrated by the ever greater development, tourists, residents, traffic, as well as a lack of attention to local infrastructure needs. In his book The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell describes a societal phenomenon he calls “social epidemics”—moments when cumulative events reach a point where rapid and dramatic change may occur. I believe change of this sort is in the wind, evidenced by a broad cross section of statewide communities embracing a bold blueprint for Hawai‘i’s sustainable future. The 73-page Draft Hawai‘i 2050 Sustainability Plan aims to measure progress toward its goals with yearly report cards, re-evaluation and course corrections and the creation of a Sustainability Council, with nine of 15 members appointed from the community. This is a welcome shift to the guiding entity, considering that not one of 25 members of the current Sustainability Task Force represents an environmental, local Hawaiian or student group. A concerted effort was made to involve high school students in the 2050 effort, including a Youth Task Force. Several speakers said this is an essential component of the plan; after all, the younger generation will be the ones still around in the year 2050. But will they be living in Hawai‘i? Nine student members of the Honolulu Advertiser Teen Editorial Board spoke on stage about their ideas for Hawai‘i’s future. When asked how many expected to live here at age 35, not one hand went up, sending a col-

LC Watch ‘Too Many Bars’ In the some-holds-still-barred blame game that is the Maui County Liquor Commission hearings on the troubles at Kihei Kalama Village (KKV), one fact has recently become crystal clear. They may not come out and say so in explicit terms, but the Maui Police Department’s Kihei contingent blames the LC for all the service calls they have to make to the area. Patrol Sergeant Mervin Ching said it himself during the Sept. 12 Commission hearing. There are, Ching told the commissioners, “too many bars” in KKV, which leads to a dangerous concentration of “intoxicated individuals.” Whether Ching is right depends on your definition of “too many” (there are nine there right now), but there’s no denying a succession of Liquor Commissions put those bars in KKV. They approved every license, knowing full well where they were going and how many other licenses of the same class and kind already existed within a 500-foot radius.

lective murmur through the audience. Another shock wave filled the room when someone mentioned that the current high school dropout rate is 36 percent. The nine teens called for improving the education system, funding health care and prevention, striving for “food sovereignty,” ensuring our environment’s health, keeping Hawai‘i “Hawai‘i,” considering youth in future decisions and giving people a reason to return home. Back on Maui last Thursday, I had the opportunity to speak with 50 Lahainaluna High School students. They were very interested in the issues swirling around Hawai‘i Superferry, and science teacher Carol Rosetta invited me to come help them answer questions. In addition to a lengthy discussion about Superferry, I asked them to complete a brief quiz: What are Maui’s biggest environmental and planning challenges, and a possible solution to each? Their overall concerns mirrored those of Neighbor Island communities statewide, with a majority expressing angst over Superferry’s potential collisions with whales, too many cars crowding insufficient roadways, pollution, population growth, development and decisions made without listening to the community. They also expressed West Maui regional issues, such as need for the bypass road, housing and a second hospital. “We can’t keep growing at this rate and not fix the transportation problems, such

as traffic on the pali,” one said. Another said, “Too much houses, no more country, just city! And that’s Oahu, not Maui. Keep it that way—don’t bring the Superferry!” I appreciated the candor of one student, who wrote at the bottom of her quiz sheet, “I think the Superferry will be a great idea to run.” Another student raised the question, “Is it too late? Seems like the people in government aren’t listening or don’t care.” Echoing a similar theme, another teen wrote, “We should be allowed to state see TIPPING, page 11

Of course, the Department of Liquor Control staff isn’t taking police criticism lying down. While not exactly blurting out that the cops aren’t being cooperative with LC investigators, they’re doing a really good job implying as much. For instance, during the Sept. 12 hearing Bill Pacheco, the LC’s chief enforcement officer, testified that he sat down with the cops months ago at a meeting that included the KKV owners and some of the licensees. Pacheco told the commissioners that Sergeant Ching contacted him and asked him to come to the Kihei station and talk to the police officers about what the LC inspectors are looking for and how best both agencies can go about their jobs. Though Pacheco says he told Ching that he’s all set to go and even has a PowerPoint presentation he can show (you know how bureaucrats LOVE PowerPoint), he says he’s still “waiting for them [Ching or any other Maui police officer] to call.”

The husband wanted the payments even though, he wrote, “Conventional work is out of the question for me, both in terms of my conscience and on an intellectual level, as it seems objectionable with regard to both my personal wellbeing and the well-being of society as a whole. LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE Quinton Thomas, 22, inadvertently strengthened the murder charge against himself in April when he mailed a letter from the jail in Rockville, Md., believing jail officials would not read the contents. But Thomas got the recipient’s address wrong, causing the post office to “return to sender,” and, as longstanding policy, officials inspect all incoming mail for contraband. According to an August Washington Post report, Thomas characterized his emerging alibis and also wrote about a witness, “This white [expletive deleted] can’t make it to court on May 7 through May 12, ya feel me. The periodic Christian Nudist Convocation took place in July at the Cherokee Lodge nudist camp in Tennessee, and according to a dispatch in Nashville Scene, the group evokes skepticism not only from most Christians (who dislike the flaunting of naked bodies, even if innocently done) but from most Cherokee Lodge members, who see them as too intense for naturism’s laid-back attitude. One CNC attendee acknowledged that many Christians would not approve of Cherokee Lodge, but to him “[I]t’s Jerusalem.” Another compared his work at nudist camps to missionary work: “[S]ome people get sent to Africa, some people get sent to South America and the Lord was like, ‘I want you to go to nudist resorts.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow, what an assignment.’“

bit harder to mask your wellheeled, bullshit populist groups? At least make me track a few front groups or something. But using the same office? Pathetic.

THURSDAY, Sept. 20

Seriously: the whole concept of “beaches” is going to be history in the next hundred years. No more stretches of sand gently sliding into warm surf. Because of global warming, our sea levels will rise and consume all of world’s beaches— drowning everything humanity has ever built within a few miles of every coastline. Rocks, sandbags and seawalls pushing back the ocean will be the closest things my generation’s grandchildren have to sandy beaches. The

Stick

By Starr Begley

Enjoying an impromptu concert by Michael Kollwitz and the best musical instrument you’ve never heard of or mid-September, the weather in Wailuku is beautiful. A mild breeze gently blows cool air down a stairwell at 33 Market Street, causing a few fallen leaves to flutter and spin. They appear to be dancing in rhythm to the music. I’m sitting on the stairs of the courtyard enjoying an impromptu musical performance by Michael Kollwitz, one of the island’s newest and arguably most unique musicians. Kollwitz moved to Maui from California with his wife last year. He’s a master of the Chapman Stick, a little-known musical instrument. As he performs his original composition “Waterfalls,” his face contorts from expressions of peace to concern, from happiness to wistfulness. My emotions follow along as I give myself over to the tale he’s telling with his hands. The rich sound emanating from just one unimpressive looking speaker fills the open space around me until I feel like I’m floating in a warm sea of sound–drifting on chords, gliding through melodies. Kollwitz is a pleasant man in both appearance and demeanor. Sporting a loose Aloha Shirt, on the surface he appears easy going. But there’s an underlying intensity and excitement lurking beneath the surface. He is extremely passionate about his instrument. The American musician Emmett Chapman created the Chapman Stick in 1974. He wanted a stringed instrument with great range that he could play two-handed. What he came up with is totally unique. The instrument looks like a large fret board from an electric guitar, but without the curvy “guitar” body. That’s how it gets its nickname—“The Stick.” It plugs into an amplifier, which picks ups the gentle tapping of the strings and transmits the sound to the listener. “It’s a stringed instrument, but you play it more like a piano,” Kollwitz says. “You don’t pluck the strings, but simply tap and hold them.” The Chapman Stick comes in eight, 10 and 12 string varieties. They are most commonly made from exotic hardwoods, but are also available in graphite and resin. The stick Kollwitz played at his impromptu concert in Wailuku had 12 strings and is made of tearara, a hardwood from South America. Kollwitz plays while seated, but Chapman meant for musicians to play his instrument while standing. But Kollwitz doesn’t care. “It just feels more natural to me this way,” he says. He’s in the middle of Lennon and McCarthy’s “Yesterday” when a woman who works in a nearby office walks by. By the quick steps she’s taking, it appears that she’s in a hurry. But she eventually stops and listens. “What is that thing?” she asks. “Chapman Stick,” Kollwitz says with the true smile of a firm believer. “Isn’t it cool?” “Maybe I’ll just listen for a little while,” she says. She stands there a long time.

F

nce, I relaxed by entering a sensory deprivation floatation tank. It’s a simple yet powerful experience. I remember disrobing and slipping into a completely black and silent tomblike chamber filled with water heated to body temperature. The buoyancy of the water was extremely high and I floated with no sense of direction, gravity or space for what seemed an immeasurable (neither long nor short) amount of time. The sensation that I am experiencing now, through Kollwitz’s Chapman Stick music, is similar to the way I felt in the tank–relaxed, separated from the tedium of life and connected to the core of who I really am. It’s odd that the two experiences make me feel similar, because listening to the Chapman Stick is close to auditory overload. It’s

amazing how much sound can come out of something that is so simple on the eye. If I hadn’t been sitting directly in front of Kollwitz, I would swear a small band was playing multiple instruments simultaneously, because that’s what it sounds like. “When I first heard The Chapman Stick, that’s what I thought,” Kollwitz says. “I thought, how can so much sound be coming out of that thing? I knew from that moment that I wanted one.” Kollwitz first discovered the instrument in 1976, two years after Chapman invented it. Kollwitz was 19 years old and stumbled across Emmett Chapman himself. “I told myself that no matter what, I was going to get my own Stick by the end of the year,” Kollwitz says. He did, and still remembers the day clearly. “It was December 29,” he says. “It cost me like $700, which was a lot of money back then. A lot. I didn’t have a car or even an amp to plug it into to, but I just knew that things would fall into place.” That day he took his first lesson–which ended up lasting for three hours–with Chapman. “I took lessons with him for a long time,” Kollwitz says. “I loved it right away... But it took about ten years for me to say that I was truly comfortable with its capabilities. It has a 5.5 octave range. A piano has eight. So if you take off the real high and the real low keys of the piano, you’ve got the Stick.” Kollwitz demonstrates that range beautifully as he goes into what sounds like a flamenco version of “Yesterday,” followed by a haunting “Stairway to Heaven.” He’s been playing the Stick for about 30 years and says that he’s still learning, still discovering new things about it all the time. The Chapman Stick can play

classical, flamenco, hard rock and even something approximating a “slack-key” sound, but it’s not even close to well known. I ask Kollwitz why he thinks most people have never seen or heard it before. “I have no idea,” he says. “I want the world to know about this instrument. I want Oprah to know about the Chapman Stick.” Its lack of fame may have something to do with the fact that the Chapman family is still the exclusive producer of the instruments. They put out a limited number each year. Other people may have seen and heard the Chapman Stick, but didn’t know that’s Photo: Karl-Heinz Maurer what they were hearing. In the movie version of Frank Herbert’s Dune, the futuristic musical instrument called the balliset was actually a Chapman Stick painted gold. Its music was included in the soundtrack. ore people flow through the courtyard. Not one of them just walks by. Everyone, regardless of age, stops and listens to Kollwitz play his Chapman Stick. Over the years, Kollwitz has played at countless festivals, fairs and resorts. He has put out nine albums and one full-length concert DVD. He’s been covered in local papers and interviewed on the radio. While here on Maui, he plans on playing at the resorts as well as under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina. In fact, the general public of Maui will get its first chance to experience Kollwitz and his Chapman Stick at the upcoming Maui County Fair. It’s said that music is universal–and not just in it’s over all appeal. A scientific study presented this past April at the Royal Astronomical Society’s National Astronomy meeting in Lancashire, England reports that “looping magnetic fields across the Sun’s outer regions, called the corona, carry magnetic sound waves in a similar manner to musical instruments such as guitars or pipe organs.” Granted, these sound waves are much too low for humans to hear— and sound doesn’t move through the vacuum of space in any case— but if we could, we would actually be able to listen to the sun. And it would sound like music. “I’ve been told that the music from the Stick is peaceful and healing,” Kollwitz says. “I never set out to do music like that, but it just is.”

ONO KINEGRINDS

Cheap and Hot How saucy Korean food from JB’s Kitchen arouses my taste buds Korean food, unlike many other forms of Asian cuisine, is sexy. Seriously sexy. How can you get hot and bothered over something called xiao long bao or bun mang vit? Not to leave Filipino and Japanese cuisine out of the equation, but do we really even need to even mention natto or balut? Korean food is flashy, spicy and flavorful. They use a lot of sesame oil, chili pepper, soy sauce and garlic. According to Wikipedia, the Koreans use more garlic than anyone else in Asia and the Northern Mediterranean. Yes, this includes Italy. I know this because I am somewhat of a fanatic when it comes to Korean food. There’s a lot of great places that serve good Korean food on the island (I’ve also sampled most of what Oahu has to offer) and believe that the best place to eat meat jun, my favorite Korean dish, is JB’s Kitchen in Wailuku.

JB’s Kitchen is small. There are four or five tables and often the same person takes your order, answers the phone, cooks the food and washes the dishes. But don’t worry, because the person behind the counter on any given afternoon has magical powers. For real. There’s no other explanation behind the quick service, delicious food and reasonable prices. I’ll never forget the first time that I walked into JB’s. My husband picked me up from work so we could have some lunch together. Not to sound like the spoiled brat that I kind of am, but when we pulled up along side the tiny building my eyebrows shot up. Huh? I thought. You have got to be kidding. When I was thinking “lunch” I was thinking Koho’s or Ruby’s–at least someplace with air conditioning. “Do you trust me?” my husband asked. Not really, but I decided to be a good sport. It turns out that JB’s not only has air conditioning, but awesome food as well. We ordered the meat jun and spicy chicken. And we got our food in less than

10 minutes. The banchan (side dishes) were very delicious. I’m very picky about kimchee and JB’s is the best. The cabbage is spicy and tart, but doesn’t have any weird fishy aftertaste like so many others do. The meat jun, (thinly sliced beef dipped in egg then pan fried, for you unfortunate souls that have not yet tried it) was absolutely succulent. I’ve never tasted meat jun that was so tender and flavorful.

The spicy chicken was perfect. There was very little fat on the meat, and it was juicy and extremely tasty. I love spicy food, but my husband doesn’t, and even he enjoyed it. He needed copious amounts of water, sure, but he enjoyed it. Thankfully, JB’s Kitchen is located close to my office, though if it were 50 miles away, I’d still go there at least once a week. MTW

Larger than Life Saturday (Sept. 29), 6 p.m. at the Viewpoints Gallery, Makawao [ART RECEPTION] I can’t help myself. I love art. Not all art, just good art. And I love the work of Robena. Her art is fantastically colorful, expressive and huge. Her paintings make a bold statement and her expert use of scale, color and mood will turn you on. The first piece of Robena’s that I saw was an untitled, huge 64” by 68” canvas of orange flowers. It was captivating… And then I discovered some of her other paintings– freakishly realistic portraits and still life that looks like you could pick it up. The way she paints light and reflection is truly amazing. She’s also done some amazing landscapes that are so grand in size you literally feel as though you are in the scene. According to Robena, “The way the world is today, I think it’s a good thing for people to just stop and look at simple things and just, you know, breathe.” For more information visit www.studiorobena.com or call Viewpoints Gallery at 572-5979. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Starr Begley

Stomp the Yard Friday night (Sept. 28) at the Maui County Fair, Kahului [COMPETITION] I was going to take this to my grave, but I’ll admit it here publicly for the sake of journalistic integrity: I enjoyed the movie Stomp the Yard. But do not confuse this statement with “I thought that Stomp the Yard was a good movie.” I never said that. All’s I said was that I liked it. On that note, I will probably be attending the first annual Stomp the Yard high school dance competition at the fair on Friday. It’s going to be televised by OC16’s Dis ‘N Dat and emceed by Kutmaster Spaz. There will be a Guy’z cheerleading competition, co-ed step/dance competition and a Teen Idol singing contest. The best of the best high school students will be given cash and prize packs. For more information, call 242-2721. [SB]

Friday (Sept 28), 8 p.m. & Sunday (Sept 30), 7 p.m., The Studio Maui, Haiku [MUSIC] When I traveled to Southeast Asia I realized just how little I knew about popular music in the rest of the world. Yes, I’m talking about–gasp–outside the U.S. I discovered there are lots of amazing artists out there who never make it across the great pond. This week we have a chance to broaden our scope and experience the Indian-English fusion sounds of Sheila Chandra. Born in South London to Indian parents, her voice has been called haunting, ethereal, evocative and eclectic. After an Indie-pop song skyrocketed her to stardom in mid ‘80s, Chandra has turned her back on mainstream music and produced her own Middle Eastern, British, Irish, Indian combo style of world fusion, showing off what Billboard Magazine called “One of the most beautiful voices in the world” with often wordless chants and vocals. No, it isn’t roots reggae, acoustic island music or even a new rock group from the mainland; it’s something different from a land far, far away. It’s easy to forget that there’s a whole world full of music out there when you’re isolated on a tiny chain of South Pacific islands, so Maui is lucky that Chandra has decided to come here and share her unique sound. Tickets: $26 in advance at The Studio Maui, Haiku; Supernatural, Makawao; Mandala Ethnic Arts, Paia; www.hulatickets.com, 575-9390. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

Chillin’ for the Keiki Saturday (Sept 29), 5:30-10 p.m., Paia Beach Park

Hot Stuff Saturday (Sept. 29) from 10 a.m. – Noon at the War Memorial Gymnasium, Kahului [COMPETITION] It’s common knowledge that firefighters are pretty foxy. The training they go through is pretty intense and leaves them with some pretty toned physiques. On the other hand, my brother just became one, so now the whole firefighters being hot thing has become kind of creepy. If you’re still into it, you can check out the firefighters and other members of the community battle it out in the 3rd annual Chili Cook off. Spectators can taste the goods for just $1 a bowl. Proceeds benefit the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital Patients Transportation Burn Unit. For more information call 242-2721. [SB]

DAY

[FOOD/FUNDRAISER] Imagine this: you’ve got your toes in the sand under a sky full of twinkling stars at Paia Beach Park. Your right hand grasps a cold beer while your left cradles your third plate of delicious food, and you’re surrounded by friends, laughing and enjoying the music of the Hula Honeys and Voodoo Suns. You’ve just finished placing your bid on several fabulous items at the massive silent auction, and you’re feeling very good about yourself because your dollars are supporting one of Maui’s important organizations. No, it’s not a dream: it’s the Third Annual Taste of the North Shore, where north Maui’s finest restaurants, retailers and entertainment team up to support the Paia Youth and Cultural Center and it’s endeavor to provide a safe environment with lots of educational and recreational opportunities for Maui’s youth. Last year’s event sold out, raising over $25,000 for the center’s many projects, such as the Stone Wave skate park, commercial free youth radio station KOPO-LP 89.5 and the Paia Bay Café. This year’s adults-only party promises to be just as awesome, with great food (taste all you want with the price of admission,) a cash bar for beer and wine, live entertainment, the beach, the moon and stars, and an excellent cause. Tickets: $50. (21 and up.) In advance at Mana Foods and Anthony’s Coffee, Paia. 579-8354. [JA]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Everybody Knows Everything Paul Haggis gets the Iraq War right Its evocative title refers to the place in Israel where David defeated Goliath at the behest of King Saul 3,000 years ago. Writer/director Paul Haggis (Crash) uses the biblically grounded metaphor as an all-encompassing touchstone for the desperate plight of physically and psychologically wounded Iraq War soldiers returning home.

In the Valley of Elah

★★★★★ Rated R/119 min.

Vietnam War vet Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones) is a retired Army Sergeant who hauls gravel for a living in Monroe, Tennessee. Having lost his oldest son, a soldier, in a helicopter training accident, Hank leaves immediately for Fort Rudd, New Mexico upon learning that his younger son Mike (Jonathan Tucker) has gone missing since returning from a tour of duty in Iraq. Believing the soldier is AWOL, Mike’s platoon superiors are nonplussed by his father’s appearance until Mike’s stabbed, dismembered and charred body is found on a contested piece of jurisdiction between the military base

and a civilian street. Apathy and incompetence from military and local police investigators push Hank to act in assembling the truth surrounding his son’s murder. Local police detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) teeters on succumbing to the lethargic attitude of the male cops that constantly ridicule her. A single mother with a young son, she is lost. Hank identifies Emily’s predicament and knows how to win her over. He approaches her in the same way he shows an immigrant grounds keeper how to fly the American flag right side up lest it give off an international distress warning that America has spiraled beyond our control. In a flash we see Emily transform from an unsympathetic desk clerk into a caring cop willing to follow Hank’s lead. Theron is nearly unrecognizable at first glance, with her hair pulled tightly back in a short ponytail and lacking make-up she blossoms into an uncompromising detective willing to learn from her mistakes. In the Valley of Elah takes on the guise of homicide procedural. The carefully painted character study that Paul Haggis smuggles inside the deceptively simple plot form has an Altmanesque egalitarian balance to it. Mike’s four platoon buddies necessarily become the focus of the investigation since they were the last ones to see the soldier alive. Conversations with their former

When did they remodel Tasty Crust?

buddy’s soldierly father enable themerich dialogue that cuts to the quick of their feelings about the war. It’s worth noting that Paul Haggis cast real life war vets Wes Chatham and Jake McLaughlin in two pivotal roles. “If you ask me, they should just nuke it and watch it all turn back to dust,” says one of the boys, whose opinion reflects his own selfdestructive streak.

What is the war doing to us? What do you do when you realize that everyone in authority is lying? How can we be saved from ourselves? These are a few of the questions the film raises in order to piece together aspects of a war whose effects will be felt long after the last soldier comes home. On top of that, it is executed to perfection. MTW

Every Rose has its Thorne The incredibly full sound of local songwriter Murray Thorne He’s known mostly for his stint as guitarist in the Celtic Tigers, the Irish house band at Mulligan’s on the Blue. But Murray Thorne is about more than just jigging to bangers and mash. For the past few months, Thorne’s been in the studio recording licks for his new solo album, set to be released by the end of the year. The notion that the album is rockbased is surprising for Celtic Tigers fans. Ten years ago, Thorne left Vancouver and moved to Maui, initially to live in a tent in a friend’s backyard and help build a studio. As it happened, Thorne overstayed his visa, and lived precariously as an illegal alien for years. In 2000 he married his wife Valerie, who was from France and, coincidentally, a permanent resident. Thorne was granted temporary residency. When Mulligan’s on the Blue opened, they gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse. “All the Guinness you could drink and free dinner,” Thorne said, laughing. “It just started as a drunken joke, just something I do on Sundays. But the Celtic Tigers and their popularity became—I call it ‘The Phenomenon.’” Thorne kept writing his own songs. At first, he planned on an acoustic record because he didn’t want to put a band together. But it was a stop-start process. It became an obsession. In the end, he decided that he needed band. “I would never have gone into the studio to record,” he said. “But I knew the most famous engineers and milked them for info. I started recording at home, and I started realizing, hey, it looks like I’m making a record. I had no idea exactly what I was doing. “People would see me rock out ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday,’ and ask me about my CD, expecting Dropkick Murphys,” he continued. “But that’s not all I do. [The Celtic Tigers] is fun—but it’s not an honest representation of me.” His own style is acoustic-based rock music, and Thorne says he once heard a person say it reminded him of David Bowie, which doesn’t displease him. In the mid-to-late 1980s, straight out

Murray Thorne Solo: Fri, 10 p.m., Dog & Duck Pub, 1913 S. Kihei Rd., 875-9669; With the Celtic Tigers: SatSun, 7 p.m., Mulligan’s on the Blue, 100 Kaukahi St., Wailea, 874-1131. of high school, Thorne played with touring hard rock bands and opened for acts like Nazareth, Loverboy, Eddie Money and The Tragically Hip. By 1990, when he was in the Canadian one-hit wonder band Raymond May, he opened for Aerosmith and Iggy Pop. “When I came here, I listened to stuff relevant for songwriting,” Thorne said. “Everything from obscure British bands to Dylan. It sounds corny, but a friend turned me onto his lyrics, and he’s got such a way with words and humanity—it’s not topical—and everything rhymes. I got into folk music because of that. I tried to be folk… but I’ll be rock and never escape from that. “The Beatles are my cornerstone,” he contnued. “They’re timeless. If they were a movie, they would be The Godfather. There’s something humanely fundamental about them.” He also loves The Killers, Muse, Tom Petty (“Now there’s a guy who can take acoustic music and make it rock!”), Radiohead, REM, Coldplay, Pink Floyd, White Stripes, Pearl Jam, Frank Sinatra, Steve Earle, Mott the Hoople, Midnight Oil and, yes, U2. “What I like about Irish music is that lyrically they’re hardcore,” Thorne said. “It’s all about human nature and suffering, all wrapped up in something fun to listen to. And I love U2; they’re appealing across the board. Bono as a lyricist really cuts through the BS. Now I don’t want to emulate that sound, but that mindset.” With the CD in its finishing stages, and Thorne making his best efforts for distribution, he said his biggest obstacle is tackling demons with promoting himself. But any obstacles that he faces are merely cementing his drive to create music true to him. “I’m gonna make what I want,” Thorne said. “I don’t care what anybody thinks.” MTW

Entertaining History Working Girls I’ll pretty much watch anything that takes place in a whorehouse. I was pleasantly surprised by Working Girls, the 1987 film by writer/director Lizzie Borden. The whole tale takes place over the course of a single shift at an upscale Manhattan brothel. During the course of the film we meet old men who seem to be in love with the prostitutes, assholes who want to degrade them, strong men who want to be dominated and men who blur fantasy and reality. More than just a collage of sexual experiences, Working Girls allows us into the heads of the characters and challenges us to step back and ask, “Why?’ The beauty of Working Girls is that although there are tons of boobies, the story is very real and natural. In fact, I found myself squirming in my seat—not at the graphic nudity—but at the emotional vulnerability of the lead character as she strips down, layer by layer, until her soul is stark naked at the end of the film. Favorite Quote: “I sell my body for a living. Why would I want to sell my mind too?”

Topics Include:

Kapi`olani, Legacy Hula Vol. 2 Hula is not necessarily my thing. Yes, it’s undeniably beautiful and it’s a gorgeous and sacred part of our Hawaiian culture, but it’s never gotten me totally excited. That being said, when I received a review copy of Kapi‘olani I wasn’t particularly excited. But when I put it in the CD player, I couldn’t believe it. It was really awesome. And by awesome, I mean even if you don’t like hula or chanting. I listened to the whole thing and had chicken skin for a good portion of the performances. The mele that are performed on this album were originally written for Queen Kapi‘olani who was King Kalakaua’s wife. They were originally published in 19th century newspapers as tributes by her friends and familiy. Before each segment, the history of the mele is explained and if I do say so myself, the whole thing was very intriguing and all together a fantastic album. Seriously. Favorite Track: “#3 Mele Lei No. 1: Aia i Haili ko lei nani.”

The Story of Lana`i I’m a book fiend. I love them. I collect, hoard, read, buy, write and cherish them. I also smell them. What? Books smell great–fresh pages and ink. This book by George C. Munro feels and smells especially good. I want to say that it’s a gorgeous coffee table book, but in reality it’s a whole lot more. Munro was the Lanai Ranch manager from 1911-1930 and the book is filled with his tales, observations and amazing photographs. It is a truly fascinating read–I fell in love with Lanai during my honeymoon and have been searching for a book like this since then. Keep this one on your holiday shopping list. You definitely know at least one person who will love it. Favorite thing about it: Hundreds of old time Lanai photographs. MTW

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You’re lucky enough to have people you can depend on. But there’s a difference between leaning on them when you’re in need, and taking them for granted. You might be in danger of erring on the self-indulgent side and counting on your friends to be more forgiving and generous than the call of duty demands. They’d probably still give you what you’re asking for, but they’d resent you for it. Counter any mistakes you may have made in this direction by brainstorming ways you can give back to all the people who’ve been there for you. It shouldn’t be that hard; in many cases, a heartfelt thank you would do the trick.

DEVONSHIRE

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Are you one of those Scorpios who can dish it out but not take it? For someone with such a potent sting, you sure are thin-skinned sometimes. Someone gives you a dose of your own poison/medicine and you’re screwed. That’s probably why you avoid, like the plague, most people who actually remind you of you. However, there’s tons you could learn from your dangerous kindred spirits. This week, try to get to know one. Sure, there’s risk involved, but you’ll learn what many of us already know: the thrill of that danger is half the fun!

Some people think Sagittarians aren’t territorial, because many of you move around or travel so frequently. Actually, you’re quite precious about whatever space you’ve marked out for yourself. It’s just that this so rarely pertains to the physical world; usually it’s some mental territory you regard as sacrosanct, and woe to whosoever dares set foot there. Sags can put down perceived intruders so fast they don’t know what hit them. Fine. You have a right to defend your turf. The problem is, since it’s purely metaphorical sacred ground, we don’t exactly know where its borders are. This week, should someone trod upon it, give them half a chance to beat a swift retreat. It’s only fair, and nine out of ten trespassers will, no drama necessary.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Don’t bother with subtlety this week. The sly wink that would usually let people know that you’re in on the game will almost certainly be missed. What would be hilarious to anyone in the know becomes offensive when they’re left in the dark, and can lead to major drama you have no time or energy for. Either skip the clever shenanigans altogether for a while, or spell them out a little more obviously. Sure, that robs them of some of their humor, but nevertheless that’s loads better than the alternative; at least you’re still soliciting laughter, not anger.

In your mind, the truth is a mighty weapon, a holy, glowing sword that can cut through all kinds of bullshit and cast a revealing light on any situation. In reality, the truth is powerful, but not all-powerful. There are those who wield deception and illusion in ways that reduce the truth to a toy light saber, easy to deny and ignore. That’s why you need to develop more tools in your arsenal to fight the good fight. I’m not asking you to cultivate deceit, and truth will certainly always be your best tool—but having a few other tricks up your sleeve will make things more likely to go your way—which, my dear, is what we all want.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Some people get this idea that you’re phenomenally confident and powerful, simply because of this aura you’re able to project (and of course because of your many talents). Few realize just how sensitive (and often insecure) you actually are. This is one of the quintessential quandaries of Pisces-hood. People are drawn to you because of one aspect of yourself, and bewildered by another you who’s completely different than they expected. Reconciling these two apparently contradictory sides of your personality is going to be a challenge your entire life. However, that said, this week you ought to be able to actually move them just a couple steps closer together.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I wish that simply pouring your heart out in an honest and vulnerable way would always get you what you want. It’s such a sweet and amazingly sexy quality of yours. But, as you know, even your most heartfelt truth sometimes falls on deaf ears. What’s more, it’s occasionally been the subject of ridicule, which naturally has made you reluctant to give it another go any time soon. I hope, however, that you can overcome that reluctance this week, because an opening of the floodgates and spilling some honest, unedited truth is exactly what this situation needs. And, bonus: this time, at least, it’s quite likely to get you exactly what you wished for.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Sometimes you get to play the glamorous role of punching bag. I know this sucks, but it’s part of the price you pay for surrounding yourself with such fascinating and volatile people. Luckily, you can take whatever they dish out, and then some. You’re not likely to be thrown into a downward spiral of self-hate by a few rounds in the boxing ring. Let those you love vent (to a point); it’s better they take out their frustrations with you, rather than someone who’d be crushed by them. However, there’s a difference between venting and out-and-out abuse. Know where that line is. If someone crosses it, nip that shit in the bud— for your sake, our sakes, and, of course, theirs.

Don’t take your duality to extremes. Things don’t have to be either one way or another. For instance, it’s a shame to completely sever an intimate relationship just because one or both of you is moving on. Presumably, you’ve both invested tons of time getting to know each other, and could still be valuable friends, even though you’re no longer having sex. Usually a comfortable new resting place for your changing relationship can be found somewhere on the spectrum between intimate sex partners and total strangers. All you have to do is look for it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) This week starts with the Aries Full Moon, which is likely to either kick your ass, or rev you into high gear, depending on how ready for it you are. Imagine yourself standing in the ocean, being battered by waves. If you’re not paying attention, a six-footer could easily knock you off your feet and drag you into deep water. But if you’re ready for it, you’ve got several options: you could ride it for a thrill, duck under it if you’re not in the mood for conflict, or just stand your ground, feet firmly planted, and let it roll over you. You like options, right? This week, stay alert and you’ll have them.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re no backstabber. If you’re going to do someone in, you’ll usually do it to their face, with lots of warning. Leos rarely strike without loudly roaring first. People know when you’re gunning for them. That doesn’t cut into your potential scariness, because you’re still pretty ferocious and badass. But it does occasionally cut into your effectiveness. People have time to prepare for your fury to rain down upon them. This week, access one of the other big cats I know you have lurking inside you. Crouch down in the tall grass and stalk your enemy for once. I suspect you’ll be pleased at the results.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Let’s not forget the dark side of being a Virgo. While you guys have this great reputation for being generous, selfless, and energetically helpful, you also have a sinister talent for being extremely manipulative. The thing is, you’re so good at it that most people don’t have a clue you’re doing it. Lately, you’ve gotten some idea of the kind of power you’re unwittingly wielding, and now I’m worried that it’s gone to your head. This week, check your motivations. Usually, you manipulate people to do stuff that’s actually good for them. Can you honestly say your influence is that altruistic, or might it be more than a little selfish? If that’s the case, quit your voodoo hoodoo, right now—or it’ll come back and bite you in the ass.

The Maui County Fair is here. I’ve been attending the fair and parade for longer than I can remember. In fact, my grandmother took a picture of me at 18 months sitting on the side of the road, all dolled up, waiting for the parade. She submitted it to that year’s Healthy Baby Contest. When I didn’t win, she decided that the whole thing was rigged and boycotted it for many years. My first memory of the fair takes place when it was still at the old fairgrounds behind Safeway. My grandparents were working in a booth selling moon burgers. I remember feeling like I was in a sea of knees, so I must have been pretty little. My grandpa took me on the Ferris wheel, which was nothing like the one that’s at the fair today. This was a contraption straight out of the 50’s–old and rickety. It was lovely. The beauty about being a small child is that sitting next to your grandfather you feel invincible even when you’re way high up in the air. When I got a bit older and the extravaganza moved to War Memorial, I remember riding the Gravitron with my brother. The Gravitron was this horrendous enclosed circular ride that made you want to die, or at the very least puke your heart right out of your ribcage. It would spin really fast and plaster you to the wall. It was hard to breathe and the chain-smoking control guy in the middle would just stand there and laugh at all us crying kids. When I was a bit older, my best friend Susie’s parents would drop a load of script on us and set us loose. I swear, we never waited in line. We were like cutting-ninja’s. Sure, we got the “F” bomb dropped on us by a few grouchy adults, but we’d shake it off and dash onto the ride before anyone could stop us. Once I took my daughter, who was two at the time, to the fair with my parents. We got her caricature drawn and I introduced her to barnyard animals. She discovered cotton candy and had her first official post-fair meltdown. My whole family rode on the big gondola Ferris wheel. That night, I ran into my boyfriend at the time who was there with his supposed “ex-girlfriend.” It’s hard to cry at the fair, but I did a lot of it later that night after we broke up. Several years passed, we worked things out and eventually married. But I was still pissed off about the year my now-husband “totally betrayed me at the fair.” Last year we got into a huge fight about it when the fair came to town, and I stayed home. Over the past year, I’ve been making it a point to learn to let myself be loved by an otherwise completely wonderful mortal man who has made some crappy decisions in his life. It hasn’t been easy. “I used to love the fair and you have ruined it for me,” I cried when he brought up the fair this year. He took a deep breath. “This year, can’t we start making some good memories there?” he asked. My grandmother is in her late 70’s. She has been going to the Maui County Fair all of her life, which is most of the fair’s 85-year history. She and my grandpa will be going to the fair again this year as they have for every single year of their marriage, and although nothing has ever been said, I’m sure that it hasn’t always been a bed of roses. “You’re young and you got a lot of fairs to go to,” she told me. Coming from her perspective, it is silly to think that my fair going days are over. Not to mention, deep fried Twinkies are really good. Way I see it, my husband owes me about 50… And a stuffed animal. A big one. Starr Begley inherited the ability to hold a grudge for eternity. MTW
