LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR SHELL OF A GOOD READ Nice turtle story [“Race for survival, October 23]. Really interesting read. Much love to the people camping out there to help these creatures survive. It’s such a shame that we push all these species off the map, but it’s great to see some people are fighting to help them survive. Caleb Albert, Upcountry
VALID ARGUMENT, EXCEPT FOR THE IGNORANCE Re the recent “Click of the week: I wouldn’t want an Arab to run this country either. McCain defends Obama and you want to spin the table. Jesus Christ you might not like the guy but don’t be like the Republicans and turn every pebble into a rock. It’s low class and insulting to the people that know better. Muslim Americans have every right as any other American, but I still won’t vote for one. I like our Christian principles (even though I am agnostic) and while a non-radical Muslim wouldn’t vary too drastically in principles, I don’t want to chance it. You probably don’t support haoles on Maui’s County Council and I don’t support having a Muslim as a President. The lady’s argument would have been valid if she wasn’t so damn ignorant, and McCain’s response was appropriate. He simply stated that he is not a Muslim. McCain’s response would not have been appropriate if she stated that she’s afraid of Obama because he is “black. Cheers to Obama for winning the election. Russ, submitted online at mauitime.com
NUCLEAR PLAYS LEFT FIELD Re last week’s Rob Report [“Here comes the sun, October 23]: Considering that over 70 percent of the nation’s electricity is produced by fossil fuels, I’d say that nuclear and solar aren’t in competition, they are both valuable players on the same team to reduce carbon emissions. Michael Stuart, submitted online at mauitime.com
of us who tried to improve healthcare. Please vote for Jan Shields. As a highly competent nurse, she knows how to get all the details before acting and puts the needs of her constituency first. Please vote against or leave blank votes on the others I wrongly helped. They’ve shown they will continue supporting tax increases on the poor and granting state subsidies to big businesses. Please vote for Jan Shields and Mele Carroll. Again, I ’m sorry. Things are getting tougher. We need a state government that takes care of us instead of Mainland-based businesses. O.J. ISN’T INNOCENT?!? You’ve gotta hand it to Casey, because he’s right—many people do doubt that Jesus Christ was a real historical person [Letters, “Biblical Quibble,â€? October 9]. To do so, however, is kind of like saying, “For lack of indisputable proof, O.J. Simpson must be innocent.â€? How much circumstantial evidence do you need? At first, the case for a real historical Jesus looks a bit shaky. Non-Christian historical sources are almost non-existent. The oldest Christian testament we have is the letters of Paul (not the Apostle) who could not possibly have known Jesus personally (about 150 A.D.). The earliest Gospels are copies written at least 200-300 years after the death of Jesus and they contradict each other right and left. So what do we know? We know that the Roman Empire was there and the Romans crucified people all the time. We know Pontius Pilate was an administrator there at the time (he was later fired). And the political environment in Palestine was well known—like today, a lot of Jews were pissed off and discriminated against. A lot of statements attributed to Jesus seem to contradict the Jewish Talmudic tradition but he still attracted a lot of followers (and still does). To conclude that Jesus was a fictitious character—who arguably became the most famous person on the planet—strains credulity to the limit. (Don’t ask me about virgin birth of resurrection of the dead; I write this with no religious axe to grind whatsoever.) RenĂŠ Alonzo, Lahaina
SORRY STATE Some years ago I helped Roz Baker, Kalani English, Shan Tsutsui, Joe Souki and Kyle Yamashita get elected by having them on a TV show I produced on Akaku. I want to apologize to Maui for helping the above. Their records have shown that their interests lie with big business, their major donators. Senator Baker has been the most destructive with her attack mode behavior toward any disagreement and her steadfast support of the Greedy Ones. She lies repeatedly about her record and is nasty to many

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD USING HIS HEAD Legendary banjo player Eddie Adcock, age 70 and suffering hand tremors that failed to respond to medication, volunteered for a revolutionary neurosurgery in August in which he finger-picked tunes while his brain was exposed, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center surgeons tried to locate the defective area. In “deep brain stimulation,” doctors find a poorly responding site and use electrodes to arouse it properly. As Adcock, conscious but pain-free, picked out melodies, doctors probed until suddenly Adcock’s playing became disjointed, and electrodes were assigned to that spot. By October, according to an ABC News report, Adcock, with a button-activated chest pacemaker wired to his head, was back on stage, as quickfingered as ever.
BIGGER IS BETTER (1) Clair Robinson, 23, told an interviewer in September that she believes the only reason she survived the deadly flesh-eating infection recently was because she had too much weight for the bacteria to consume. “Being big saved my life,” she told Australia’s Medical Emergency TV show. (2) Though Mayra Rosales, 27, stands charged with capital murder in Hidalgo County, Texas, she was not ordered to jail pending trial but was allowed home detention because of her obesity. At about 1,000 pounds, Rosales requires special transportation and facilities and was ruled by a judge in August certainly to be no “flight risk.”
TRAIN OF THOUGHT Brian Hopkins, 25, severely burned in 2006 after climbing onto the roof of an empty train at Boston’s South Station at 2am, filed a lawsuit in August against Amtrak. Though admitting that he was trespassing at the station when he was zapped by 27,500 volts of overhead wire, Hopkins said Amtrak ought to

NOT GETTING OFF Complaints were lodged with the Swedish government in June against the state-run retail pharmacy Apoteket, alleging illegal sex discrimination, in that its stores stock sexual aids that benefit women (e.g., vibrators) but none that particularly benefit men. Said one complainer, “(A) woman with a dildo is seen as liberated, strong and independent, whereas a man with a blow-up plastic vagina is viewed as disgusting and perverted.” The government’s Equal Opportunities Ombudsman rejected the complaints.

WRONG END In September, the Indiana Court of Appeals upheld the 18-year sentence of a 73-year-old South Bend man who had insisted that he was only trying to revive his 68-year-old wife after she became fatally incapacitated in June 2007. However, police noted that he had not called 911, nor checked her vital signs, nor performed CPR, but that instead, his “reviving” consisted of performing an oral sex act on her (which the judges concluded was merely the fulfillment of a desire that his wife had long since denied him).
I SCREAM Food engineers in Japan, especially, are notorious for their odd-flavored ice creams that challenge the palate, as News of the Weird has noted several times. In August, voters at the Taste of Britain festival selected their own regional favorites, some of which rivaled Japan’s (e.g., ice creams of sausage and mash, pork pie, cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, Welsh rarebit and even haggis). The Japanese still love their ice cream, though. Among the flavors at this year’s Yokohama Ice Cream Expo in August (celebrating the 130th anniversary of ice cream in Japan) were beef tongue, octopus, eel and beer. MTW

ROBREPORT
BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET
Election reflections Reminiscing on elections past and present o Mustard, go Mustard!” A cadre of sign-wavers aside Ka’ahumanu Avenue greeting pau hana traffic with election year zeal was among my first glimpses of the peculiarities of island politics. The year was 1980, and everything about Maui was still new to me—the breathtaking natural beauty, local foods, singsong “da kine” rhythms of pidgin English and especially the grassroots politicking of roadside sign waving.
G “
Nishiki is on the ballot again some 30 years later, apparently refreshed and renewed after nearly six years away from politics (he reached his 10-year term limit in 2002). The announcement of his candidacy for his old South Maui residency seat came as a surprise to many. A few months ago, Council member Michelle Anderson, Nishiki’s former executive aide, said she wouldn’t seek re-election. But the familiar Nishiki name had already been vaulted back into the spot-
Many prognosticators believe Lingle, who is related to the Cutter automobile dealership family, will continue her climb up the political ladder by running for office again in 2010, possibly for U.S. Senator. My own early memory of Lingle is when she brought a group of women for a lunch meeting at Polli’s Mexican restaurant in Makawao, circa 1984. I recall she left a 10 percent tip. Of course, County Council salaries have increased appreciably since then. Roadside sign waving is as much a
Roadside sign waving is as much a unique part of Hawaii’s campaigns as anything else you can name, from chicken hekka fundraisers to gimmicky gifts. That year, Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama ran for County Council, after many years of service as County Treasurer, Finance Director, Water Director and Managing Director to Mayor Elmer Cravalho. A year earlier, Murayama served as Acting Mayor when Cravalho disappeared for 12 days on an unexplained walkabout. Cravalho, who had run Maui County since 1967, resigned soon after, bringing about a Special Election with a wide field of 18 candidates. Rising to the top of the heap was Hannibal Tavares, who had served on the County Board of Supervisors, predecessor to our County Council back in the 1950s. A mountain of a man with a booming voice to match, Tavares, a Republican and father of current Mayor Charmaine Tavares, served as an executive for Alexander & Baldwin, one of Hawaii’s “Big Five” companies, all with a base of wealth rooted in plantation agriculture. That contrasted sharply with the background of the runner-up in the 1979 Mayoral Special Election—an upstart, outspoken young man from Oahu—Wayne Nishiki. I remember Nishiki’s television ads, with the signature “Zorro” sword slash to write the “N” of Nishiki. “Do you want Maui to become another Honolulu?” he asked, a refrain that didn’t change much over the more than two decades he served on the Maui County Council thereafter.

light in May, when the oldest of Nishiki’s six children, daughter Kai Nishiki, launched her campaign for the MakawaoHaiku-Paia residency seat. Many would agree that name recognition, as much as the importance of key issues, plays a significant role in local elections. In Murayama’s case, however, it may have worked against him. In a brief phone interview, “Mustard” told me that though he beat everyone in the primary, he lost in the general election to a radio announcer named Ricardo Medina, known as “The Carabal.” Murayama believed that there may have been some ill feelings about those who had been associated with Carvalho’s administration, and the odd circumstances that caused him to vacate his Mayoral post early in his term. he 1980 election also marked the year a first-time candidate from Molokai was voted into office. Linda Lingle, a Mainland transplant with a cum laude degree in journalism, founded the Molokai Free Press, a popular community newspaper. A skillful public speaker and savvy politician, she gained prominence by serving five 2-year terms on the Council and two 4-year terms as Maui County Mayor. After losing the closest Gubernatorial race in Hawaii history in 1998 to incumbent Benjamin Cayetano, she was elected in 2002 and is in her second term as Governor of Hawaii.

unique part of Hawaii’s campaigns as anything else you can name, from chicken hekka fundraisers to gimmicky gifts. I recall then-Molokai Council incumbent Pat Kawano waving to traffic at the corner of Ka’ahumanu Avenue across from the Maui Beach Hotel, even while running unopposed. Years later, Maui Soda and Ice Works president Mike Nobriga was a fixture on that same corner and acquired a golden brown complexion from his hours in the sunshine. The late Councilman Tom Morrow is fondly remembered for donning his cowboy hat and sitting atop his horse while waving to traffic at the confluence of the Hana and Haleakala highways. A Summer Starr hot pad, acquired two months ago at a fundraiser for her run for the Upcountry House District 12 seat, reminded me of years past and freebies given away emblazoned with a candidate’s name. One year I found a pair of gardening see ELECTION, page 11
LC Watch Indecent exposure The folks in the LC have been called many things—unfair, capricious, inept. Let me add “kinky” to the list. If you’re ever bored (like really, really bored), read through the LC rulebook (go to www.co.maui.hi.us and click on “Departments,” “Liquor Control” to download). Just when your eyes start glossing over, you’ll arrive at a section appropriately titled “Special conditions” (§08-101-23). Without warning, a dry government document crammed with jumbled legalese morphs into Savage Lust, a trashy grocery store novel featuring a bare chested Fabio look-alike on the cover. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the words and phrases that pop up in the “Special conditions” section and how often they appear: anus (nine times); genitals (seven times); breast (ten times); buttocks (eight times); areola (six times); vulva (five times); masturbation, sodomy, beastiality and flagellation (twice each); and my personal favorite, making just one glorious appearance: “artificial pubic hair.” I’ve been to some pretty wild parties; never have I seen someone sporting fake pubes. As you’ve no doubt guessed (if you managed to stop giggling long enough to think it over), the “Special conditions” are related to standards of decency in liquor-selling establishments. The irony is that even as they try with all their might to prevent indecent activity, these rules read like the late night scribblings of a repressed pervert who’s had one too many peach daiquiris. OK, OK—it makes sense that if you want to prevent certain acts from taking place you have to use language that describes those acts. But I just have this gut feeling that whoever wrote, “No licensee shall encourage or permit any person on the licensed premises to touch, caress or fondle the breast, buttocks, anus or genitalia of any other person, whether directly or through the clothing or any other material,” did so with a creepy little grin on his face.

ehbrah@mauitime.com Hey I got something nice to say! To that guy in the Maui Mall parking lot that I admit looked kinda scary at first but who turned out to be great at changing a tire, thanks so much! When you got two screaming kids plus bags in your arms and no cell phone, it would be a bad situation to walk out to a flat without someone there to help. You saved me a big headache and were so nice about it, just said glad to help and wouldn’t accept a couple bucks or a beer or nothing. ROBREPORT ELECTION: continued from page 8 gloves in my Wailuku post office box, with a call for “Many hands working together.” Extra points for any reader who can remember which candidate sent these island-wide. I still use the (Kauai Senator Gary) Hooser chip bag clip from a previous election and recently found a purple and yellow Mike Molina pen in the back of a drawer. Often, it’s the functionality of the campaign doo-dad that determines whether it will be picked up in the first place and kept and used thereafter. y early political awareness dates even further back. Growing up in the 1960s in Madison, Wisconsin, I knew little about local elections. But I remember vividly the day I came home from sixth grade to find my mother glued to the television and in tears at the news that President John F. Kennedy had been shot. I recall the lopsided victory of Lyndon Johnson over Republican Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, a race that is echoed this year, some 44 years later, with another Arizona Senator, John McCain, seeking the White House. During my high school years, I paid much closer attention to the unfolding presidential campaign. I was intrigued by the persistence of former Minnesota Governor Harold Stassen, who had run for the country’s top office three times previously, (and five times after 1968). I applauded the audaciousness of deadpan comedian and political satirist Pat Paulsen of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in a half-baked run for president. On a show that often stretched the limits of media censorship policies, Paulsen announced his presidential campaign slogan, “I’ve upped my standards. Now, up yours.” On his political party affiliation, Paulsen stated he belonged to the Straight Talking American Government party, or STAG party for short. But my greatest awakening came with the entrance of Senator Eugene McCarthy to the race. No sitting Democrat had challenged Lyndon Johnson’s party leadership until McCarthy, an outspoken critic of the increasingly unpopular war in Vietnam. He made an unexpectedly strong showing at the early New Hampshire pri-

mary against Johnson, who withdrew two weeks later after Senator Robert F. Kennedy of New York entered the race. Madison was a liberal university town with a growing reputation for radical protests of the war, ROTC recruiting on campus and job fair participation by Dow Chemical, makers of napalm. My father, a physician I knew to be more inclined to serve as a Cub Scout Packleader than a political activist, nevertheless grabbed the baton of the McCarthy anti-war campaign. He drove me to junior high school in a ’64 Buick Special sporting a triangle-shaped Styrofoam McCarthy emblem strapped to the roof. He took my older brother and me to a McCarthy rally at the Dane County Fairgrounds, though without a lot of preaching or fanfare. “Boys,” he said, “I want you to see this man speak tonight.” The campaign had won the support of some Hollywood celebrities, among them Paul Newman, Barbra Streisand and Burt Lancaster. The comedian team of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara (parents of comic actor Ben Stiller) attended the rally. What caught my attention was the amount of money my father pulled out of his wallet when the collection basket came around—far more than what I had typically seen at Sunday Presbyterian services. he political seed had been planted. I found myself involved with school politics, first in junior high as campaign manager for my friend running for Student Council Vice President. Once elected, he appointed me to be Council Sergeant-at-Arms. The position was primarily to keep order at meetings if anyone spoke out of turn, but also extended to picking up a tray of milk cartons from the cafeteria and bringing them upstairs to the biology classroom where meetings were held during lunch hour. I later found myself serving as Student Senate representative to my high school homeroom. The biggest issues back then revolved around student dress codes. Fast forward to 2000, when I entered the Maui political scene and sign waving faithful by running for Council. After a long battle to “Save Baldwin Beach” and “Stop Spreckelsville Sprawl,” I tossed my hat in the ring to help bring greater attention to the issue, which eventually failed by a close 5-4 vote. This year, many other hopefuls are doing all they can to illuminate vital issues and earn your support to serve the best interests of Maui County. Please show up and vote! MTW

the Business End A look at the week’s economic winners and losers...
More bad news for Maui Land & Pineapple and CEO David Cole. Having already slashed its workforce and with debt now topping $100 million, ML&P is teetering on a dangerous precipice. Quoted in The Maui News, Cole said the situation is “keeping [him] awake at night.” Gee David—maybe you should take some of the $4.1 million in cash and stocks you were paid last year and buy a more comfortable bed. The downturn/slowdown/slump/[insert tired buzzword here] is going to affect just about everyone on the island in some way, but it’ll hit tourism dependent businesses first—and hardest. Exhibit Z: Pacific Business News reports that Blue Hawaiian Helicopters is set to lay off 20 workers on Maui and the Big Island. The 23-year-old tour company employs 160 people on four islands; no cuts are currently planned for its Oahu and Kauai operations.

At a time when no financial institution is completely safe, folks who’ve entrusted their money to Bank of Hawaii can rest (relatively) easy. BOH posted a $47.4 million profit for the third quarter, which ended September 30. That’s a dip of less than one percent compared to the same period last year. CEO Allan Landon trumpeted the bank’s success—with the world’s smallest trumpet. Quoted in PBN, he said the company is “preparing for more challenging operating conditions as the Hawaii economy slows.” Wow, break out the champagne. On the opposite end of the stability spectrum, Alexander & Baldwin saw third quarter profits plummet by about 25 percent. Quoted in PBN, CEO Allen Doane went on a euphemism spree, tossing out gems like “cost containment” and “revenue optimization.” I don’t have my Corporate Doublespeak Thesaurus™ handy, but I think those phrases are roughly synonymous with: “Oh shit.” Another bleak dispatch from the Mainland: Not unlike two rats clawing at each other as they fall from a sinking ship (OK that’s a little mean, but descriptive) it looks like GM and Chrysler may merge, as reported in The Wall Street Journal. With growth stalled and sales sputtering, the two American automotive giants are staring down the tailpipe of insolvency. We thought of a couple other bad car metaphors, but we’ll spare you. MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22 Man, that Sol Kaho‘ohalahala residency challenge just won’t go away. A couple weeks ago the County Clerk rejected a petition filed by 12 Lanai residents seeking to disqualify Kaho‘ohalahala from the County Council race. Undaunted, one of the petitioners, Bruce Harvey, appealed the ruling. Quoted in The Maui News, Harvey said he questions the candidate’s Lanai ties because he’s “never seen him at the gas station.” OK, but Kaho‘ohalahala was born on Lanai and has previously represented the island at both the county and state level. Hard to see this as anything other than a transparent political ploy to take down the frontrunner.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23 So this is about a week old but it still warrants mention: As part of a brutal round of cuts aimed at offsetting a projected $900 million deficit, Hawaii is eliminating the Keiki Care Program. The only one of its kind in the country (and boy what a sad statement that is) Keiki Care was created to cover thousands of uninsured children statewide. Trying to spin a move destined to generate bad PR, officials argued that many of the kids covered by the program had switched over from private insurers and thus weren’t part of the at-risk group being targeted. Quoted in an AP story, Dr. Kenny Fink—an administrator with the Department of Health and Human Services and owner of one hell of a Dickensian moniker— said, “People who were already able to afford health care began to stop

paying for it so they could get it for free.” Free healthcare for everyone—what a nightmare that would be...In other news: It looks like Bruce Harvey has dropped his Kaho‘ohalahala residency challenge. “I’m not a vindictive person,” he told The Maui News. Fair enough.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24 The photo on the front page of today’s Maui News of Barack Obama disembarking from his plane in Honolulu— hands thrust deep in his pockets, a somber, contemplative look on his face—was almost laughably cinematic. The equally dramatic story that accompanied the photo was about the candidate’s ailing grandmother, said to quite possibly be on death’s door. Despite the too-perfect timing, my first impulse was to take the news at face value. But then a fellow Maui Timer stoked my cynicism by wondering aloud whether the whole thing isn’t a big publicity stunt aimed at making Obama look like a sympathetic, wounded family man a week and a half before the election. Again, I want to believe it’s all on the up-and-up, but damn if I’m not starting to have doubts…
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25 As if you needed another reason to hate centipedes: MECO reports that a brief power outage affecting parts of Wailuku and Kahului was the result of one of the much-loathed arthropods worming its way into some equipment and igniting a small fire. Here’s hoping it was the same one that tried to chew through my shoe the other day.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26 Opening up a jumbo size can of worms, Ronald Moon, Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court, told a group of lawyers that racism is alive and well in the Aloha State. Addressing the State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, and quoted in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Moon, who is of Korean descent, didn’t let any ethnic group off the hook. He cited examples of hiring practices, especially in the legal community, that discriminate against Asians. He called out those who aim their hate at haoles. He even took a swing at designated whipping boy Rex Johnson, the former CEO of HTA who was fired for forwarding racist jokes on the company computer. Talking frankly about race relations may not seem like that big of a deal to some, but it’s always a prickly issue for public officials—even ones who don’t have to worry about re-election—to tackle. So kudos to Moon for having the stones to broach the subject.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
A face not even PETA could love. Philadelphia Phillies are one win away from the most coveted prize in baseball. As a paper-thin excuse to follow the game and call it work, I’m gonna do a bit of live reportage that will be totally outdated by the time you read it. Sound good? Good…First inning, Victorino knocks in a pair with a two-out single. Phillies up 2-0, scores of Mauians jumping up and down in front of their TVs…Tampa Bay tightens things up with a run in the top of the fourth. Thousands of cheese steak-filled stomachs begin churning in unison in the City of Brotherly Love, joined by a few Spam musubi-laden bellies here on the Valley Isle…Pesky Tampa Bay strikes again in the sixth via the old school single-stolen base-single formula. Game tied 2-2…And in comes the rain. Game delayed due to weather in the bottom of the sixth with the score knotted. They say they’ll resume tomorrow, but they also say there’s more rain in the forecast. Seriously, with all the money in Major League Baseball’s coffers, and with the expanded playoff format routinely pushing the World Series past Halloween, isn’t it time for every stadium to be outfitted with a retractable roof, if for no other reason than to save pieces like this one from fizzling out? Anyway, looks like the looming deadline will force me to belatedly congratulate Shane next week. Knock on wood, of course.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28 Though he maintains his innocence, and presumably still enjoys the support of his old pal and colleague Dan Inoye, Ted Stevens of Alaska became the first U.S. Senator in over two decades to be convicted of a felony when a jury found him guilty of taking oil company kickbacks. We now enter the phase of endless appeals, and the safe money’s on Ted avoiding any serious punishment. (As Stevens himself said in an FBI-recorded conversation played during the trial, “These people can’t shoot us. This isn’t Iraq. Hell, the worst that could happen is that we run up a bunch of legal fees…pay a fine, spend a little time in jail.”) But the real question is whether the longest-serving Republican Senator in history can hold onto his seat…In other news: Exactly one week to go until that little election you may have heard about. When next we chat, the United States will have crowned a new President-elect (barring some massive electoral meltdown). Just one humble request: To all the “undecided voters” who keep popping up on cable news shows and in nationwide surveys—make up your freakin’ minds (after reading the Maui Time endorsement issue, of course). If you don’t have all the information you need by now, there’s no hope for you. MTW

very four years, we’re asked the same questions. And we’re presented with the same choice: Two candidates telling us we face dire, pressing issues, each saying that only by electing him can we ensure a safe and prosperous future. The names change but the song and dance, the hollow platitudes, stay comfortingly, sickeningly consistent. This year has been no different—except that it has. Our country stands at a perilous crossroads; that’s not hyperbole, it’s fact. We are engaged in two poorly planned, mismanaged foreign wars. Our economy is in a freefall. Vital infrastructure—schools, roads, hospitals—languishes in neglect. Our healthcare system is in shambles, the laughingstock of the Western world. Every day the national debt, the legacy of wanton greed and unfettered consumption that we’ll pass on to the next generation, swells like a bloated carcass. In these tenuous times, our choices have magnified repercussions. There are many things Barack Obama is not. He is not a savior. He isn’t

the messiah, sent from above to fix all that is broken with a wave of his hand. There are other things that he is. He is a politician. He’s calculating. He’s willing to do the dirty work required to get elected. But he also represents a radical redirect, a break from the failures of the last eight years. He takes words like “change” and “hope” and endows them with an authenticity that’s unfamiliar, even revolutionary, in these bleak, cynical times. His opponent, John McCain, has tried to seize on this prev a i l i n g spirit
o f change. He’s attempted to paint himself as a maverick, a shoot-fromthe hip reformer who puts country first. Yet at every major turning point in this campaign McCain has revealed his true nature—conniving, erratic, manipulative and woefully out of touch. The towering example of this is his choice of running mate. Sarah Palin is without question one of the most unqualified, dangerous figures ever to wobble onto the national stage. The fact that her handlers have almost totally sheltered her from unscripted media exposure—an unprecedented move—reveals how completely she is a c r e -
ation of the right wing spin machine built by men like Lee Atwater and tuned to frighteningly effective precision by the likes of Karl Rove. Palin is a caricature, a scary glimpse into the souls of her creators—narcissistic, power hungry men who believe the American public is so stupid, so distracted that they’ll blindly, gleefully follow anyone who likes guns and beer, mistrusts science and intellectualism and willfully mispronounces the word “nuclear.”
Obama takes words like “change” and “hope” and endows them with an authenticity that’s unfamiliar, even revolutionary, in these bleak, cynical times.
This election is a chance to do two things: First, to prove Rove and his ilk wrong and to reject their destructive, misanthropic agenda. Second, and more important, it’s a chance to show the world, and ourselves, that we’re ready to turn the page, to put a positive stamp on history, to do something that will be remembered as a step forward rather than another stumble into the mistakes of the past. Every four years, we’re asked the same questions. This year, we can give a different answer.

★ MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL ★ Kahului Seat Incumbent Joe Pontanilla faces challenger Netra Halperin in one of several races that pits a longtime elected official against a fresh-faced newcomer. Halperin, who owns a psychotherapy center in Wailuku, has made vacation rentals a central issue in her campaign; she says she decided to run for the council after her bed-and-breakfast in Haiku was shut down. We like Halperin’s take on a number of issues including water use and stream flow restoration. We also question whether Pontanilla is motivated and dynamic enough to initiate the changes that are needed to move Maui toward environmental and economic stability. Maui Time Weekly endorses Netra Halperin
Pukalani-Kula-Ulupalakua Incumbent Gladys Baisa has placed the economy squarely at the center of her campaign. It’s hard to argue that’s not a pressing concern, but we feel it’s come at the expense of long-term environmental considerations. Enter Michael Howden, an acupuncturist and permaculturist who’s trumpeting widespread water use changes and agricultural sustainability. The controversial, much-maligned Wailea 670 development is a good illustration of the philosophical differences between the candidates: Howden adamantly opposes 670 and told The Maui News that it’s “more mindless development”; Baisa voted in favor of the project. There are things about Baisa we like, but we think it’s time for a new voice. Maui Time Weekly endorses Michael Howden
Paia-Makawao-Haiku The youth meets experience theme returns, with Kai Nishiki—a relative newcomer on the electoral scene but owner of a familiar last name—running against incumbent Mike Molina. Molina’s cozy ties to big business interests have been well documented in these pages. As a recent example, he voted— along with numerous other councilmembers—to pull back a bill that would have restricted water use after
the big resorts cried foul. Nishiki, a small business owner who has trumpeted sustainability and affordable housing, looks like a breath of fresh air on a council in need of resuscitation.
ers when it counted and, incidentally, was named “Best Politician” by Maui Time readers in our annual Best of Maui issue. There aren’t any huge knocks on the challenger, Alan Fukayama, but there’s no need for a change here.
Maui Time Weekly endorses Kai Nishiki
East Maui Lucienne de Naie isn’t a political newbie by any means—she’s run for office before and is involved with a number of advocacy groups including the Sierra Club—but she fits the change versus status quo paradigm that has come to define this election on all levels. Intelligent, motivated and feisty, de Naie isn’t afraid to rattle cages. “An activist cuts through the B.S.,” she told us in an interview last month. Some of that B.S. has come from her opponent, Bill Medeiros, another member of the developer-friendly good old boys club. The choice is clear. Maui Time Weekly endorses Lucienne de Naie
Maui Time Weekly endorses Jo Anne Johnson
Lanai After earning our endorsement and finishing first in the primary, Sol Kaho‘ohalahala has been hit with a series of residency challenges. While he doesn’t currently live on Lanai full-time, Kaho‘ohalahala has said he intends to return to a family home there after the election; he was also born on Lanai and has previously served the island at both the county and state level. At this point, his opponent, John Ornellas, seems to be running a onenote campaign, charging Kaho‘ohalahala with being an out-of-touch outsider. We don’t buy it. Maui Time Weekly endorses Sol Kaho‘ohalahala
South Maui No county-level race has generated as much heat as this one. After incumbent Michelle Anderson dropped out for personal reasons, former longtime Councilmember Wayne Nishiki tossed his hat back into the ring. He’s opposed by former Deputy Planning Director Don Couch. We gave the two men a dual endorsement in September and invited them in for interviews in the interim. The decision of who to support was not an easy one—there are things about both candidates we like and things that give us pause. In the end, the fact that Couch received campaign contributions from big business interests including Wailea 670 developer Charlie Jenks tipped the scales. Nishiki took no developer money and, though we have some questions about his ability to get things done given his reputation as a contrarian, we believe he’s more likely to be a strong independent voice. Maui Time Weekly endorses Wayne Nishiki
West Maui We endorsed incumbent Jo Anne Johnson in the primary and nothing has changed since. She’s still a widely popular figure who has earned the respect and admiration of her constituents, stood up to develop-
Note: Mike Victorino (WailukuWaihee-Waikapu) and Danny Mateo (Molokai) will both appear on the ballot but are running unopposed.
★ STATE SENATE ★ District 5 After fending off a primary challenge from realtor Bart Mulvihill, incumbent Roz Baker (D) is facing Republican Jan Shields. While we haven’t agreed with Baker on every issue, we do agree with the numerous organizations—including the Sierra Club and the Ohana Coalition—that have already endorsed her. Shields, whose reputation has been tarnished by evidence that she failed for a time to pay taxes on her small business, does not appear to be a better choice. Maui Time Weekly endorses Roz Baker

Incumbent J. Kalani English (D) is a respected public figure who appears to genuinely care about the people he serves and seems destined to win in a landslide. His opponent, John Blumer-Buell, is running the classic independent “issue campaign”; he’s in the race to keep English honest and to promote environmental causes. We applaud Blumer-Buell for his effort and are ideologically in line with him. But we feel English has done enough in his legislative career to earn our continued support. Maui Time Weekly endorses J. Kalani English
★ STATE HOUSE ★ District 9 From the outset of the campaign, there were concerns over the health of incumbent Bob Nakasone (D), who is battling cancer. Though he decided to run, those concerns have not abated. We don’t support Nakasone’s opponent, Republican Henry Kahula, but we also have serious reservations about Nakasone’s ability to serve out his term if elected. Which begs the question: if he’s forced to step down, who would be appointed to replace him? While we wish Nakasone good health, we are withholding our endorsement. Maui Time Weekly withholds its endorsement
District 10 Incumbent Angus McKelvey (D) is facing a challenge from political newcomer Ramon Madden (R). In a recent phone interview, Madden, who works in the hospitality industry and calls himself a “new kind of Republican,” told us he got involved in politics because he felt the core values of the party were being undermined. We admire his enthusiasm, but feel that he isn’t ready to serve at the state level. There are concerns that McKelvey may be aligning himself with old guard pro-development Democrats like Joe Souki, but we think he deserves another term to prove himself. Maui Time Weekly endorses Angus McKelvey
District 11 Like McKelvey, we hope incumbent Joe Bertram III (D) can grow into the office if given another term. We think he’s a better choice than challenger George

Fontaine (R), but now that he’s gotten his feet wet on Oahu, we’re challenging Bertram to step up his game over the next two years and fight for some of the issues, like greenways, that he touted when first running for office. Maui Time Weekly endorses Joe Bertram III
District 12 After winning a close race with Summer Starr in the primary, incumbent Kyle Yamashita (D) faces Republican Mickey Verra. During his time in office, Yamashita has made a number of decisions that seem at odds with the needs and desires of the people he serves, including squashing SB 1789, a bill designed to protect community access stations like Akaku that got unanimous approval in the Senate and was widely popular on Maui. Much of Yamashita’s campaign cash also comes from big business interests outside his district. We cannot in good conscience endorse either candidate. Maui Time Weekly withholds its endorsement
★ U.S. HOUSE ★ 2nd Congressional District Incumbent Mazie Hirono (D), former Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii and 2002 gubernatorial candidate, faces three challengers: Republican Roger Evans, Libertarian Lloyd J. Mallan and Green Party candidate Shaun Stenshol. While we appreciate the environmental awareness Stenshol brings to the table and hope his voice will influence Hirono’s platform, we don’t feel any of these candidates represent a significant enough upgrade to warrant a changing of the guard. Maui Time Weekly endorses Mazie Hirono
Note: District 8 Representative Joe Souki (D) won the primary and is running unopposed in the general election.
★ HAWAII STATE ★ CONSTITUTION QUESTIONS Shall the age qualification for the office of governor and lieutenant governor be reduced from thirty years of age to twenty-five years of age? Proponents point out that 25-year-olds can serve in the military and go to war or serve in the United States Congress. Why shouldn’t they be allowed to seek Hawaii’s highest office? Groups like Youth Outreach! Hawaii have also argued that lowering the minimum age would foster more civic involvement among young people. We agree with both points; this change seems like it could only enhance, not harm, the political process. Maui Time Weekly recommends a vote of “yes”
Shall there be a convention to propose a revision of or amendments to the constitution? Con Con supporters—mostly Republicans plus a few disillusioned Democrats—say our state’s governing document is broken, or at least corrupted by amendments, and needs to be fixed. We’re not arguing the Constitution is perfect, but with the state facing a projected $900 million deficit over the next two years, staging a Con Con at an estimated cost of $10-$40 million seems like a fiscally irresponsible move (making the fact that it’s supported by so many so-called “conservatives” rather ironic). Also, there is legitimate concern that a convention could turn into a special interest free-for-all, with various groups lobbying for pet causes without an eye on the big picture. In the end, the potential rewards don’t outweigh the cost or the risks. The time may come when it’s a good idea to hold another Con Con (the last one was 30 years ago). But that time isn’t now. Maui Time Weekly recommends a vote of “no”

One go-to place I can always count on is the Millyard Hamburger Steakhouse. It’s a real nondescript location, with about four tables inside and a help-yourself water station. But it has great hours, 8am to 9pm, and everything is cooked up fresh by the brother and sister team behind the counter and in the kitchen. The menu is a conglomeration of local favorites. They prepare lots of Korean, Chinese and local foods. As their name suggests, the hamburger steak is really popular. It comes smothered in gravy with an egg on top and a side of rice and mac salad. Although I am not a usually a big fan of hamburger steak, I’ve found their careful preparation and seasoning extends to the cheeseburger deluxe sandwich as well. I
can attest to the deliciousness of this handmade seasoned patty on a simple white bun with American cheese, complemented by crinkle cut fries. Another favorite with my family is the lemon chicken and fried rice. The lemon chicken is done Chinese style with delectable breaded pieces of chicken smothered in a tangy lemon gravy. Fried rice here comes heavy with bacon and has a really delicious smoked flavor. We often get the mandu, handmade dumplings fried crispy and served with a dark soy-based dipping sauce. They offer it as a plate with rice and salad, or you can get it as a side with more pieces to share. My usual lunch is bi bin bop, a Korean dish that features rice served with an array of fresh vegetables like pickled daikon, cucumber and sprouts, plus a side of chopped Korean barbeque chicken and a perfect fried egg on top. The bi bim bap is fresh and balanced, the spicy garlicky chicken mellowed by fresh crisp veggies; the egg over the rice adds that perfect element of comfort food. I hear from my coworker that the chow fun is really good, too. I haven’t eaten it, but I’ve seen it and been intrigued by its appetite-inducing combination of homemade-looking noodles, bean sprouts, hamburger and green onion. It’s definitely on the “to try” list for one of those days when I don’t feel like cooking and turn to my extended neighborhood kitchen. MTW

Orange & black drinks TEQUILA SUNRISE South Shore Tiki Lounge, Kihei Not exactly a Halloween drink, I know, but at least the coloring is right. I had a run-in with one of these on a recent, ill-advised Sunday morning trip to the bar. The orange that characterizes the tequila sunrise possesses a glowing quality, which I believe to be due in part to grenadine. Or maybe magic. I must say I’m more of a Bloody Mary type when a Saturday night defies my concept of linear time by stretching straight on through to Sunday morning. But if you’re going to go super-sweet, why not add insult to injury with one of these?

BLACK WIDOW COSMO Café Marc Aurel, Wailuku Vodka—it kind of tastes like darkness, doesn’t it. Strangely enough, you have to add stuff to it to make it black. The folks at Café Marc Aurel have discovered a black-colored vodka called Blavod, which they use in the production of my very favorite cocktail, the cosmopolitan. Blavod is made in London and rendered black by way of a flavorless herbal extract. I will find out later this afternoon whether or not said drink will soothe a Tagumainduced rage.
BIG SWELL IPA Maui Brewing Company, Lahaina So this beer isn’t, say, blazing orange, but it’s not of the same golden hue as a lager. Plus, you can stick an orange slice on the edge of your glass and Bob’s your uncle. This India pale ale is loaded with subtle spicy undertones and is at once sweet and bitter. It’s one of my favorite beers. I’m a beer snob, which is why I am pretty stoked that Maui Brewing Company has reopened. We can now once again enjoy the fruits of Maui’s only local brewpub right at the source. Hazzah!

Anywhere Would the Dude have settled for one of these if there was no half and half to complete his Caucasian? My guess is no. Furthermore I feel as though I have committed a civil wrong by mentioning this drink within 50 feet of the tequila sunrise. Still, as my father once said, the Black Russian is a good after-dinner drink if you let the ice melt a little, you sip it slowly, and you don’t look at it.

MANGO MARTINI Mala, Lahaina Wow. A drink that marries two of my favorite things: mangoes and booze. It’s like watching The Big Lebowski while skydiving. It’s like listening to Pink Floyd’s “A Pillow of Winds” at sunset with a glass of champagne in one hand and a kitten in the other. You really can’t go wrong. Like the Black Russian, I would sip this one ever so slowly, but for a completely different reason. It utilizes Level One Vodka, Cointreau and mango puree. The puree is key here…not that mere mango juice would turn this drink into cough syrup or anything, but the fresher the better, especially when we’re talking about the illustrious mango. MTW

Lahaina lowdown The party will go on; here’s your guide… ontrary to what many people think, Halloween has not been cancelled this year. (That only happens with Christmas.) In fact, Front Street festivities will go on much as they have in years past, only this time around the street will be lacking live music and vendors. One key difference, as it now stands, is that Front Street may be opened up to traffic as early as 6pm, though why any driver would want to traverse the people-packed street is beyond us. The list of events in Lahaina for this Halloween is long. Your itinerary, of course, will depend on factors like marital status, whether or not you have small children, if you have a place to crash nearby, how comfortable your costume
C
is and how long your DD will be able to tolerate being the only sane non-cop within a half mile range. Those partying late into the night should keep in mind that there will be DUI checkpoints all over the place. Personally, I’d rather fork over $70 for a cab than risk it. For those of you with young’ns festivities start happening in the late afternoon. Revelers such as myself would do just fine popping over after work—after getting in costume, of course. In any case, get there early. Parking will likely be a pain, but it can be found in various pockets throughout town. Again, getting there early is key.
LAHAINA: continued on pg. 24
FAMILY EVENTS 1-5:30pm, 505 Front St., Haunted House. If you have little ones, the tamer version of this haunted house goes from 1-5:30pm. The admission is $3 for keiki. Those seeking a more intense show are advised to check out the adult version, which will begin at 6pm and go until 10:30pm ($11). Event organizers warn that those with health conditions may want to sit this one out. Proceeds benefit A Keiki’s Dream foundation. 4:30pm, Front Street, Keiki Parade This Soroptomist International/West Maui Rotary Club event, entering its 30th year, is pretty much the centerpiece of daytime Halloween events in Lahaina. It features hordes of kids in adorable costumes. They’ll be marching from Front and Papalaua streets to Banyan Tree Park to the tune of the Lahainaluna School Band as well as the ROTC drill team. Professional surfer Archie Kalepa leads the parade. 5-8:30pm, Lahaina Cannery Mall, Halloween Cannery Kids’ Night This is a good time for families with young children to escape before madness descends on Front Street. Trick-or-treating at malls is all the rage these days, as retailers are likely to find handing out razor blade-laden apples to be bad for business. Here you will find trick-or-treating, a magic (oh, I’m sorry, illusion) show, a costume contest for keiki in three age groups and a pineapple decorating contest. Kids can even get their photo taken with Frankenstein’s monster. 6-7pm Wharf Cinema Center, Keiki Karaoke/Costume Contest Families that haven’t had enough of the festivities can head back over to Front Street and toss the young’ns on stage for a karaoke contest as well as another costume contest. Cash and prizes (as well as major bragging rights) are at stake for this one. You can register the kids (ages 5-12) for the keiki contests until 6pm.

CLUB FESTIVITIES 8pm, Heaven & Hell Party, Lahaina Store Grille & Oyster Bar This party is likely to be raging. It involves multiple levels of revelry. “Hell” is on the second floor in the grand dining room. “Heaven” is on the rooftop. Features a DJ on both floors as well as a costume contest. This function will serve as installment one of the club-fiends’ Halloween fix. Admission before 10pm is $15; after it’s $20.
8pm, Halloween Nightmare, Cellar 744 If you haven’t checked out Maui’s newest late-night spot (and Lahaina’s only full-on night club), stopping by tonight is a must. This Love & Light Productions party features drink specials and music by DJ Daniel. $20 gets you in.
9pm, Night of the Dead, Santa Fe Cantina This Dia de los Muertos-inspired party will feature trippy visuals, a costume contest, and DJ sets (Toben, N8 Castro, Trip and Max). Oh, and I’m being told that there’s a special on Jager shots. Three bucks. And $2 tacos all night for those of you who tend to inadvertently drink on an empty stomach. Admission: $10.
9pm, Hard Rock Halloween, Hard Rock Café Not only will this party likely prove to be killer, the $15 you pay at the door benefits the Pacific Cancer Foundation’s breast cancer division. DJ 007 will provide the audio. This may also be the only spot where you can get an emergency tarot card reading or airbrush tattoo.
10:30, Night of the Living Dread, Cool Cat Café If you haven’t seen Marty Dread perform yet, now is the time. Dread will most certainly be busting out the positive vibe-ridden, infectiously danceable tunes for which he is best known. There are bound to be some killer drink specials, plus this is a dynamite spot to get a (drunken) bird’s eye glimpse of the Front Street festivities.

It may not seem like it, but we also know Halloween does happen in places that aren’t Lahaina. In fact, there are some pretty killer happenings across the Valley Isle. Whether you’re aching to see some gospelreggae, knock back absinthe at a bacchanal, or you just don’t want to deal with the masses, there’s a Halloween happening out there for you. Check out our comprehensive Halloween events calendar and find all you need to know. See CALENDAR PG. 30
EVENING FESTIVITIES 7pm, Front St. Zombie Hunt My favorite. I would so participate in this if it weren’t for the fact that I’ll be wearing stiletto heels as part of my costume. This is why I call upon all able-bodied, nonstiletto-wearing individuals to take up arms in defending humanity against a legion of repulsive zombies that is plotting to turn tonight’s celebration into a blood bath. A $35 fee gets you the tools you need as well as membership in the Lahaina Zombie Elimination Task Force. Are you up to the challenge, man? If so, dial up undeadinvasion.com and see what you can do for your country in this time of great need. 7:30pm, Wharf Cinema Center, Adult Karaoke/Costume Contest Those who couldn’t muster up the courage to battle zombies may have just enough guts to bust out some Boston at the 25th Annual Wharf Center Karaoke Contest. Registration goes up until 7pm, which leaves enough room for a couple of beers before you take the stage. Contestants, who must wear costumes, can win a bundle of money or a prize or two. 10pm, Silky Ringo, Mulligan’s at the Wharf Now that you’ve bested your opponents with a soul-stirring karaoke rendition of “Lady Humps,” it’s time to get down. Silky Ringo will be jamming upstairs at Mulligan’s. This is an opportune time to grab a beer.
10pm, Ryan Robinson Band, Bubba Gump Shrimp So I haven’t heard these guys play yet, nor have I heard their opener, the Flying Sheep Problem. But rumor has it that their music is highly danceable. A little advice: tonight is probably not the night you want to stick your feet in those giant iron Forrest Gump shoes. $5. 10pm, The Unifires, Longhi’s I don’t have word just yet on the admission fee for this one, but scoping it out along one’s perusal this evening may be a worthwhile endeavor. 6pm, Halloween glass blowing party, Da Kine Connection Smoke Shop Water tobacco pipe enthusiasts may be wondering what’s in store for them in Lahaina this Halloween. Well, the answer lies just off Front Street. Glass blowing legend Jerome Baker will be crafting intricate and colorful glass water tobacco pipes on site for your tobacco smoking and tobacco pipe-staring pleasure. Also available for staring are the visuals resulting from a laser light show. There will also be a DJ spinning tracks best suited for water tobacco pipe and rolled cigarette parties.

LOVE, FOREVER CHANGES
SHAUN OF THE DEAD
Truth be told, I’ve been dying to write about the band Love for a pathetically long time. Led by Arthur Lee (who I’d be in love with if he wasn’t 37 years older than me and, well, dead) they were one of the most innovative bands to come out of the mid to late ’60s. Of course, they haven’t gotten a fraction of their due credit for being the huge influence they were on rock, punk and who-knows-what-else. On Forever Changes Lee drifts from the proto-punk you hear on tunes like “7 & 7 Is” (off Da Capo) into a softer yet moodier sound enhanced here and there with horns and strings. It’s hard to move beyond the addictive opening track, “Alone Again Or,” which is laden with classical guitar and passionate Tijuana Brass-style horns. Yet Forever Changes goes on to cover such territory as war (“A House Is Not A Motel”), cynicism (“The Red Telephone”) and suburban malaise (“The Daily Planet”). Even the songs that concern romantic love (“Andmoreagain”) are not without undercurrents of inner turmoil and political strife. It’s really hard to do Forever Changes justice in 200 words or less, but I hope I can inspire just one person to seek out Lee’s music.
The fact that this 2004 Edgar Wright film is a satirical take on the zombie attack genre did not stop it from giving me nightmares. I am instinctively terrified of zombies, as we all should be. Seriously, if there weren’t a real threat of a zombie attack, why else would there be AZMs (anti-zombie militias) across the country poised to take on a sizable onslaught of slow-moving reanimated corpses? In any case, zombies are fuckin’ scary. Even if they are approaching you and your best friend at a pace so slow that you have plenty of time to get away…or throw shitty record albums at them. Social commentary comes in when the main characters are too self-absorbed to notice that a virus that turns victims into zombies has taken over their city, and have no interest in finding out why they are being chased by reanimated corpses. The zombies move so slowly that only the laziest and most imperceptive of slackers would fail to get out of the way in time. But the protagonist does manage some pretty clever zombie-deflecting maneuvers, and the zombie pool cue beating/Queen dance sequence was good for a laugh, even if it didn’t stop the nightmares.
TOM WAITS, SMALL CHANGE
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
This is one of those Tom Waits albums to which tee-totalers cannot relate. With song titles like “Tom Traubert’s Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen),” “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart” and “The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me),” it’s clear that inebriation is one of the key factors at play over the course of this record. Assisted by a jazz trio, Waits poetically wades through a whiskey-soaked landscape filled with bad luck, strippers, city lights and longing. My favorite is the above-mentioned “The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me),” wherein the narrator accuses everything in the room of displaying various bad qualities (“the carpet needs a haircut…the owner is a mental midget with the IQ of a fence post”). Small Change is definitely not something you put on to impress members of the opposite sex. Trust me. It’s not exactly workout music, either. But I do know this: if the election turns out to be a dinosaur-ridden catastrophe, you know I’ll be giving this record a spin, whiskey tumbler in hand.
A classic. I saw this one when I was about five years old (around the time I first saw Full Metal Jacket), which probably explains a lot. Including the nightmares I just mentioned. It’s been a while, but usually they involve an associate and myself discovering that a pack of zombies is trying to bust through the front door, etc. We break our way out and run down the street, only it’s impossible to run. Try as we may, we’re glued to the pavement. I’ve always managed to get away—but still. Night of the Living Dead is what shaped my conception of zombies, and probably yours as well. This black and white 1968 flick spawned the zombie apocalypse genre, which, if you can stomach it, is a pretty good vehicle for critiquing various social ills. At worst it’s an excuse to throw around blood and guts. Interestingly, the undead are never referred to as “zombies” in this film, but rather “ghouls.” The word “zombie” only came to be associated with the film’s mindless villains over subsequent years.
BOB DYLAN, THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’
EVIL DEAD II: DEAD BY DAWN
Okay, I apologize for being so obvious with this one. At the same time it’s a hard to ignore this album given the showdown that’s due to take place (I hope) between two very different ways of thinking. Everyone’s heard the title track, of course, and it hasn’t lost any pertinence, but most of the other tunes on this record are just as important. I would have to say that the most applicable track is “Only a Pawn in their Game,” wherein Dylan tells the story of the 1963 murder of black civil rights activist Medger Evers. The song essentially outs racism as a tool that the ruling class uses to create hatred and division among the poor. This election year has certainly brought us more of the same, only with a greater assortment of enemies from which a politician can choose. Yup, making an undereducated majority afraid of a bunch of cardboard cutouts has done wonders for a certain political party, hasn’t it? Anyway, another conscious gem on this record is “With God on our Side,” which serves as a history lesson exposing the lunacy behind our leaders’ perennial rationale for going to war.
You may notice that in the previous two entries little reference has been made to either film’s plot. The reason is simple—the plots are all basically the same: Big scary undead people are closing in on a dude and possibly a chick. Dude must keep his wits as they inch closer. Evil Dead II follows a similar arc, but pokes fun at it the entire way. It’s also pretty disgusting; I had to close my eyes for most of it. The film is a sequel to the first Evil Dead, which followed the same plot but took itself seriously. Both are set at a cabin in the woods. Unlike the above two flicks, the undead attack as a result of main character Ash’s (Bruce Campbell) playing back of a professor’s recording of a passage from the Book of the Dead. This awakens a horde of flesh-inhabiting spirits, which attempt to close in on Ash over the course of the night. The end result is the image of Ash wielding a chainsaw in one hand, a shotgun in the other. There isn’t any social commentary to speak of in this one. MTW

ing they’re unable to make the rent, they decide the best way to raise cash is to produce their own X-rated movie. The latest from writer/director Kevin Smith has comic possibilities, but this is not one of his better films. It’s more vulgar than funny, and is further proof that Smith needs to make a real film instead of continuing to churn out studio-backed home movies that rely on juvenile humor
and gross-out jokes in place of wit. Rogen and Banks are winning in the lead roles, but their love story is a total crock, as fake as the one-dimensional supporting characters that surround them. Neither a clever examination of the porn industry, nor a thoughtful commentary on how shameless adults sometimes turn to exhibitionism for profit, Smith’s script has some funny dialogue but his usually keen use of satire and understanding of character are absent. Of the colorful supporting cast (everyone from Traci Lords to Superman Returns star Brandon Routh), only Justin Long (cast as a gay porn star) makes a real impression. The plot is pure formula and little elevates it beyond the level of an R-rated sitcom. When the leads kiss, Smith cranks up a soaring ballad by LIVE on the soundtrack, but his blatant attempt at audience manipulation fails; it’s the song that gives you goose bumps, not the scene. Smith has been praised in the past for making raunchy but sweet-hearted comedies, but here the raunch rules, while the sweetness is phony. Watching Porno, you find your mind
Duuuude...menage a trios! wandering to Smith’s other works— Chasing Amy is still his best film and love story to date, while Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is his funniest. Smith is a great writer but a mediocre director who needs to branch out of his comfort zone (aka, dick
and fart jokes) and stretch as a filmmaker. I’m reminded of director Bob Clark: after making Porky’s and its equally ribald sequel, he made A Christmas Story. Smith has real talent. I’m hoping he’ll surprise us next time. MTW

THIS WEEK’S
PICKS
Calling all souls
Los Muertos
Thursday (Oct. 30), 9:30pm, Gian Don’s, Kihei
Exhibit runs through Nov. 2, Duck Soup, Maui Base Yard, Puunene
For this week’s picks I chose to leave out Halloween events. There are just too damned many killer parties from which to choose that night. Since this particular masquerade ball occurs the evening before Halloween, I figured including this Nightlife Music event as a pick was a nobrainer. Plus it’s about time I gave swank restaurant/bar/night club Gian Don’s its due. Tonight they bring in San Francisco Bay Area DJ David Harness, whose house music/classic garage spinning has earned him quite a reputation over the past decade or so. Harness derives influence from such brilliant artists as Stevie Wonder, Barry White, the Blue Notes, P-Funk and the Isley Brothers, all of whose innovation and soul has no doubt crept into the music of Harness. Tonight’s bill also features Del Sol, Pio Marasco, and Gretchen Rhodes. Added benefit: a chance to give your costume a trial run; to make sure those six-inch spiked heels are more durable than they look. Besides, I can’t think of a better weekend to turn into a bender. $15.
Halloween week shares a day with its south of the border counterpart, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). While on the surface the two holidays appear similar, they actually starkly contrast one another. Halloween, for example, embraces the Western concept of death, with which we tend to associate the darker aspects of the human psyche, namely fear. The Dia de los Muertos tradition stems from pre-Columbian days. Like the Australian Aboriginies, ancient Aztecs viewed death as another phase of life; that to die is to awaken from a dream. Dia de los Muertos aims to celebrate and honor the dead, to recognize death as a part of life. The occasion seems to have spawned some of incredibly vibrant and imaginative art. Much like the holiday itself, it tends to juxtapose things we associate with death – skeletons, namely – with some of the things we tend to associate with vitality: flowers, for example. Maui artist Deybra Fair is currently displaying a mini-exhibit at Duck Soup in Puunene that serves as a 3-D homage to the holiday as well as a nod to phenomenal surrealist Frida Kahlo. Her work will be on display until Nov. 2.

I’m not going to parse words on this one. Plain and simple, this show is a must. You have Bronx native DJ Logic, whose take on the turntable shuns sampling in favor of genrebending grooves. This is evident in his work with John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Medeski, Martin & Wood and the John Popper Project. Logic is bringing his experimental sound to the isles as part of a national tour. He shares the stage with percussionist and jam band veteran Bill Kreutzmann, who is best known for his work with the Grateful Dead. Kreutzmann plays on Maui occasionally, and always puts on a killer show. Then there’s “swamp-funk-hoodoo-slide-guitarchoogler” Papa Mali, whose sound is incredibly versatile without ever straying very far from its voodoo swamp blues roots. You can almost feel the Delta air, thick, sweaty and heavy, oozing through the speakers throughout the duration of his tunes (which you can check out at www.papamali.com, and I strongly recommend that you do). I have a sense that this label-transcending show will be a breeding ground for sweet vibes and tasty grooves alike. Good times for all. $25 advance/$30 door.
Tuesday is going to be a long day. Perhaps the fate of the entire planet rests on this day (but probably not). The results of this election may send us spiraling into a post-apocalyptic Mad Max nightmare. They may help keep the bus out of the ditch (for now). They may mark the close of an era defined by sheer douchebaggery. Or not. In any case, this is one of the most important elections in decades, both locally and nationally. As the day unfolds, we here at MTW will be getting the lowdown. We will be staking out at polling places. Whatever happens, we will be Twittering the hell out of this election by way of our mobile devices. You can read these Twitter posts by texting “follow mauitime” to 40404 or visiting www.twitter.com. Or catch our posts live at akaku.org or on Akaku Channels 52, 53, and 54. Alongside Akaku we will also be providing up to the minute stats. You can even contribute your own election day Twitters to Akaku by subscribing to Akaku’s Maui Nui Election Twitter feed. Political die-hards can join us at Akaku’s studios at 333 Dairy Road for an election day party. Bonus: keep an eye out for our first-ever Election Day Drinking Game Guide. Our best idea yet: a rusty nail for every state McCain and Palin win; a surfer on acid for every state Obama and Biden grab. Yeah, sounds potentially deadly. We’re still working out the kinks.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) It’s not hard to guess which will have more terror, more zombies, and more masks—Halloween or the presidential election. Halloween is traditionally the time to put on a costume that will enable you to tell a deeper truth or express a part of yourself that you don’t usually get to express. Same goes for the election, really. This is your time to communicate your perspective, and pull no punches. Do what you have to do to get your point across. When putting together a Halloween costume, you wouldn’t waver when considering those extra touches that would make it more likely to thrill, shock, and horrify. Don’t fail us here.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Do nice people make you suspicious? I don’t blame you, after how many terribly disingenuous folks you’ve encountered. Perhaps I’m as cynical as you are; I also have this feeling that most people pretend to be nicer than they really are. That’s why it’s refreshing when you meet someone who is very nearly as sweet, generous, and caring as they appear to be. Luckily for you, there are at least a couple of these playing leading roles in your week. Go ahead and be cynical if you wish, but if you let your bitterness keep you from letting these people into your life, you’ll really be missing out.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Your subtle suggestions have largely gone unnoticed or ignored (it’s hard to tell which). It’s time to throw your precious delicacy and tact out the window and attack the problem head on. Be forceful, direct, brutally honest, and uncompromising here. In this particular case there’s not much room for compromise, anyway; laying down the law is definitely the thing to do. Be the stubborn goat you are, lower your head, and charge. Don’t let people think there’s wiggle room when there’s not. They’ll just be that much more pissed when you pin them to the wall.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It’s hard for me to imagine not voting. Nevertheless, that’s what nearly half of the eligible people in this country do on election day—exactly nothing (except, perhaps, complain). I don’t feel much sympathy for people who don’t exercise the power they have, even if it’s limited or they believe it to be ineffective. Don’t be one of those unimaginative losers. Go ahead and bitch about the state of affairs if you like—but please also exercise whatever power you have to reshape it to your liking. You’re usually one to stand up for what you believe in, even if it appears to be a “lost cause.” I’d be mightily disappointed if you let me down now.

Just because you’re being pushed in a certain direction doesn’t mean you actually have to go there. You Fish are entirely too accommodating, in general, but you need to learn to defy the negative influences in your life. They are as pervasive and persistent as gravity, but they’re also as resistible. Don’t be so flimsy. Stiffen your spine, harness your willpower, and choose to pursue the course that will make you happiest, regardless of your pathetic detractors. A little conscious effort will keep you from slouching at your laptop; similarly, a determined decision can keep you from succumbing to the forces at work upon you now.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Nearly every Aries I know has a superhero complex. You believe you’re capable of superhuman feats. That belief is actually sometimes enough to carry you through some seemingly impossible situations. However, frequently confidence can’t sustain you by itself, and you end up injuring, exhausting, or screwing yourself over. An important part of every Ram’s journey is to recognize their own limitations. You should stretch those throughout your life, of course, but until you identify where they are, you run the risk of repeatedly pushing yourself too far. Remember that you can’t actually leap tall buildings, command legions of flying monkeys, or force people to tell the truth. Get over that, and show us what superhuman exploits you can do.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re sometimes glacially slow to change, which is why it’s almost inconceivable that anyone could drag their feet more than you do. Nevertheless, that’s the case this week. Sometimes, wrapping your head around a transformation that flies in the face of everything you’ve ever known can take a while. You understand this. Since it’s not you experiencing this sea change, perhaps you’ll be able to help the other person through it. I hope you have the patience and understanding you always wish people had with you when you were reluctant to leap into something. Remember, what goes around comes around—the good as well as the bad.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) If you watch too much reality television, you may begin to feel that deception and withholding information is the only way to achieve what you want when it comes to your peers, but that is absolutely the wrong way to go. I can only recommend leaving behind any tactic you might see on TV. You don’t need that kind of drama. Keep things more real than that, and more honest. You can actually get most of what you want simply by speaking the truth, and asking for it. While there’s a slight chance you might get more by using lies of omission or outright deceit, it’s just not worth it.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) I don’t mind when people complain, but I’ll confess it’s irritating when that’s virtually all they ever do. Cancers have a knack for focusing on the negative at certain times; this is something you have to make a conscious effort to thwart. This tendency can become self-fulfilling if you’re not careful. Watch yourself this week. You might be surprised by how many of the things you say could be taken as whining, bitchiness, or general negativity, even if you don’t mean them that way. Fix that. Make sure that 75% of what comes out of your mouth is positive; the best part is that 75% of your life is likely to start feeling that affirmative, too.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) I don’t blame you for your pride, but I hope you can see how it keeps you from certain opportunities or experiences. You slam shut some doors that a more humble person might leave open, in the name of being treated “fairly” or as you deserve. You’re probably even correct about the right or wrong of it. But the person who’s willing to bend further is going to have the experience, while you’re not. Could you be a little more flexible? It might involve forgetting how brilliant and great you are, for a while. This week, give it a go, just to see what happens.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Don’t take your service too far. When you do stuff that is above and beyond the call of duty, it’s all too easy for people to get into the habit of taking advantage of you. That’s likely to become obvious this week; but once you have dirty footprints on your face, it might feel a bit awkward or too dramatic to bring it up, since you did lie down in front of them. However, this is a now or never scenario. Stand up, brush yourself off, and set your boundaries straight. If you wait any longer, the only option you’ll have left is walking away entirely. After all the time and effort you’ve put in, that’d be pretty damn lame.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Who broke up with who, really? It’s very hard to overcome personal feelings of rejection and reach out to someone when there’s been a rift (whether the relationship was romantic, work-related, or simply friendly); nevertheless, it’s usually a good idea. Unfortunately, in this particular case, you almost certainly have to be the bigger person here and make the first (and possibly the second, or third) move. Do you have that kind of enlightened, forgiving attitude? Can you step up and make the best of a bad situation? Or are you really going to let your sore ego ruin yet another great (if imperfect) situation?
