ON THE COVER(S): Design by Brittany Shaw

A NOTE ON THE COVER(S) Given the historic nature of this campaign, and the amount of coverage we’ve given it, there was no way we weren’t going to acknowledge the outcome on the front of our first post-election issue. The problem was, printing deadlines being inflexible and absolute, we had to start creating the cover before the results were in. The only solution was to make two covers representing both possible scenarios (we assumed a Nader upset wasn’t in the works). After putting our production department through all that hard work, it seemed a shame to let one of their creations go to waste. So, as you’ve no doubt noticed, we printed the cover that represents the way things actually played out on the front page, and buried the “bizarro world,” alternate universe cover on page 3. Enjoy. TOTAL RECALL Re the effort to recall Mayor Tavares, and the arguments against it: 1. Mayor Tavares has been good for the environment; look at her support of the conference regarding the reefs. My response is we do not need a conference, we know the reefs are being destroyed by runoff of fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides and most importantly by nitrogen and phosphates leaking into the ocean from Maui’s injection well/sewerage treatment system. In 2 years Mayor Tavares has actually done nothing about the reefs. 2. We are blaming Tavares for the worldwide economic problems. Nonsense. We are blaming her for

not having any plan to mitigate the bad effects of the worldwide crisis. 3. Maui is the most desirable island vacation spot, therefore everything is still great. No, all tourism numbers for Maui are diving off a cliff. Maui’s great but we are in competition with Mexico and the Caribbean. The meaningful question is, are we the best deal in light of the high transportation costs? If we are the best value we will prosper. We need to become super competitive, not just desirable. Ferrari makes incredibly desired cars but at 300k they don’t sell very many. 4. We shouldn’t expect the Mayor not to enforce the law. The Mayor has done nothing in two years to enforce laws against home-based businesses. There are many more home-based businesses than there ever were vacation rentals. We should expect the Mayor to enforce laws based on logical priorities, on a sense of fairness and, in times of economic crisis, on a sense of practicality designed to minimize bankruptcy and foreclosure.

ehbrah@mauitime.com I just moved here a few months ago from the Mainland and yes, I am a stupid haole. And yes, I put a McCain sticker on my car because I think he will be an excellent president. That is my right under the United States Constitution. You don’t have to agree with me but it would be nice if you could stop with the obscene gestures and comments. Don’t do it for me, but do you hate my children too? I’m just asking. I imagine a lot of the people who have verbally abused me are probably good people with families. Maybe next time imagine it’s your kids in the backseat before you fly off the handle. Aloha.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD STATE OF DELUSION Donna and Joel Brinkle of Deltona, Fla., raised a family and held respectable jobs until, in the 1990s, they declared themselves a sovereign nation and stopped paying taxes. Subsequently, the county took their home, and they now appear to be living on the handouts of their son and their church, but they have become irritations by filing property liens against government officials (including, once, President Clinton) who fail to recognize their independent authority. Once, they tried to buy a $700,000 house with a “money order” drawn on their homemade currency. Even though the Brinkles’ game plan has failed on every single point (and Joel even did some jail time), the couple remains chipper, according to an October Orlando Sentinel report, certain that some higher official will soon vindicate them.

THE ART OF BEGGING Street begging has become so sophisticated that some Web sites and blogs offer “market research” for panhandlers, with tips from wizened “pros,” according to the Summer 2008 issue of City Journal. Current begging techniques (which apparently spread nationally, at least for those non-homeless, nonmentally ill beggars) suggest humor (e.g., “I won’t lie to you. I need a drink”) and specificity of amount (e.g., “I need 43 more cents for a cup of coffee”), which often produces a larger donation. Local TV reporters in Memphis, Tenn., and Salt Lake City, among other cities, have found panhandlers to routinely earn $10 an hour and sometimes substantially more.

(2) Indiana University researchers reported in September that male Australian dung beetles differ from U.S. dung beetles in that evolutionary diversion of nutrients has given the Australians small horns but large penises and the Americans the opposite. Thus, noted the researchers, big-horned American males tend to fight each other for females, while Australians rely more on sneakiness.

STROKE OF GENIUS British engineer Ken Walters became disabled from an auto accident and was living on government assistance to persevere through pain and long-time depression when, in 2003, he suffered a stroke. After a lengthy recovery, Walters discovered, while doodling, that he seemed to have a newfound gift for art. After drawing up some demonstration software, he was hired by the giant Electronic Arts company and is flourishing, according to an August Daily Mail story. His doctors said the brain typically rewires itself for protection after injury and that previously untapped consciousness can emerge.

DISGRUNTLED INDEED Though laid-off workers in the U.S. do much grumbling about their high-flying CEOs, some dispatched employees in India are apparently more hardcore. Two CEOs of international firms’ Indian subsidiaries in the city of Noida were beaten up (one fatally) in separate incidents shortly after announcing mass layoffs in September. Sixty-three people were charged with the murder, but no suspects have been arrested in the other incident. MTW

ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

Biofueling the fire BlueEarth Biofuels files suit against Hawaiian Electric, et al ack in February 2007, Maui Electric Company (MECO) announced it would be partnering with a company new to Hawaii on a project to build and operate the world’s largest biodiesel refinery. At MECO’s Maui Waena site on Pulehu Road, BlueEarth Biofuels LLC, registered in Nevada, would construct a facility capable of processing 40 million gallons of biodiesel yearly by 2009, and 120 mgy by 2011. A Maui News headline trumpeted, “$61 million project a start to ending use of petroleum.” Mayor Charmaine Tavares, who campaigned on a platform including renewable energy, called the undertaking “a huge and gigantic step in the right direction.” With such a project, MECO could begin to replace some 72 million gallons of petroleum combusted at their generating plants in 2006. Local observers questioned the track record of an unknown company that had never built a biodiesel refinery of any size, and cautioned that the volume of feedstock oil could likely be derived only by importing palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia, where the industry is an ongoing driver of massive deforestation. Many residents called for utilizing local renewable energy resources such as wind, waves and solar, not another imported fuel. But MECO and parent company Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) were undaunted. They claimed they would set new criteria for sustainable palm oil and that the facility would induce local production of biofuel crops. Now, less than two years later, the proverbial shine is off the apple. Environmental groups and community members awaiting a Draft Environmental Impact Statement promised in September 2007 recently found an entirely different sort of document to scrutinize. US District Court documents filed October 6, 2008 in Dallas, Texas indicate that BlueEarth Biofuels, LLC is bringing breach of contract complaints against HECO, MECO, Aloha Petroleum and Karl Stahlkopf, Senior Vice President for Energy Solutions and Chief Technology Officer of HECO. The complaint attests that BlueEarth had signed NonCircumvention and Non-Disclosure Agreements with MECO, HECO and Aloha Petroleum, whom BlueEarth had introduced as a potential operator

MECO and HECO’s biofuel dream has turned into a legal nightmare. of a fuel terminal facility, which was not part of the original project. Further, BlueEarth, HECO and MECO had executed a “Confidential and Proprietary Memorandum of Understanding….to Proceed with Evaluation and Development of a Biodiesel Production Facility,” on MECO’s Waena site. The complaint claims that HECO and MECO are in breach of the memorandum by failing to negotiate and work exclusively with BlueEarth in good faith. “Shortly after BlueEarth shared its confidential information regarding the details of the Project with Aloha (Petroleum),” the filing states, “Stahlkopf informed BlueEarth that based upon numerous private meetings between HECO and Aloha in June of 2008, HECO was unilaterally terminating investment talks with the Project’s potential equity investor in order to provide Aloha with a key investment role in the project. This key investment role, promised to Aloha by HECO included the opportunity to purchase a majority interest in the Project.” The complaint attests that HECO and MECO now refuse to continue working with BlueEarth to develop viable investments for the project, and “have no intention of completing the Project with BlueEarth.” Page ten of the filing states that “Stahlkopf induced and conspired with HECO, MECO, and Aloha to breach their contracts with BlueEarth; therefore, Stahlkopf is liable for inducement to breach contracts, interference with contracts, and conspiracy.” lueEarth’s lawyers are asking for a jury trial, for damages measured by lost profits and for an injunction in

producing or procuring biodiesel from any entity not approved of by BlueEarth. They also ask that the defendants pay “Exemplary damages in an amount sufficient to deter them and others from engaging in such conduct in the future.” Renewable energy proponent Lance Holter, chair of the Sierra Club-Maui Group, related that the information regarding the Texas court filing was emailed to him anonymously. The sender gave no clue as to why the message was sent, except as a warning to taxpayers. The e-mail contained a link to the US District Court website, where pages of the legal filing could be downloaded for a nominal fee. The sender also added a comment: “Landis Maez, President of BlueEarth Biofuels is still working with HECO while his [Chief Financial Officer] partner Bob Wellington files a law suit on BlueEarth’s behalf in Texas? Landis has not separated himself from BlueEarth Biofuels. This can’t turn out good for the Tax Payer who is on the hook for $60 Million in revenue bonds for this deal. More corporate lies and deceit? TAX PAYER BEWARE!”

LC Watch Merkin hard, or hardly merkin? Last week we devoted an entire column to re-printing all the titillating words contained in the “Special conditions” section of the LC rulebook. We’ve got far more serious matters to delve into going forward, but before we get off (pun intended) the topic, we’ve got a bit more to say about one of the LC’s naughty little phrases: artificial public hair. A friend and reader of Maui Time from Denmark (our influence is international) pointed us to a Wikipedia entry on “merkins,” which is apparently the accepted term for fake pubes. According to the entry (and yes, we know, it’s Wikipedia, but this seems to be confirmed by multiple sources), merkins were “originally worn by prostitutes after shaving their genitalia to eliminate lice or to disguise the marks of syphilis.” More recently, merkins of various sizes and colors have become a popular accoutrement among the Burning Man crowd. So three cheers for the LC; way to be on the cutting edge of a weird thing whores and hippies do, and to prevent them from ever doing it in a liquor-selling establishment on Maui by taking the time to put it in your rules. Finally, and then we really will let the subject rest: our Danish informant points out that the LC rule in question states, “No licensee shall permit any person from displaying any portion of any artificial pubic hair,” meaning that technically the artificial hair doesn’t have to be near the genitals to be verboten. Thus, a man with a really bad toupee that looks like pubic hair (and we’ve all seen one or two of those) could theoretically be held in violation and the bar in question cited. If you think that sounds ridiculous and far-fetched and that the LC would never do something that flies so blatantly in the face of fairness and common sense, clearly you need to read this column more often. - Jacob Shafer

ROBREPORT FUELING: continued from page 8 t should be noted that Hawaii taxpayers are not on the hook for $59 million in Special Purpose Revenue Bonds (SPRB) that were approved to assist the BlueEarth/MECO project by the 2007 state legislature when they passed Senate Bill 1718. The purpose of such bond assistance is not an actual expenditure of state funds, but an opportunity to extend the state’s bond credit rating to a prospective firm seeking to do business in Hawaii. While SB1718, providing SPRB assistance for BlueEarth, passed the Senate despite lopsided testimony opposing it, another challenge was launched before Governor Lingle signed the bill into law. A Hawaii coalition of eco groups opposed to importation of palm oil to fuel local electric plants sent the word far and wide, and more than 8,000 emails arrived at the Governor’s office asking her to veto the bill. Unblinking, she signed it into law. HECO and the Natural Resources Defense Council engaged in a quasi-public process of seeking community input on setting criteria for procuring “sustainable palm oil.” A HECO press release from June 2007 acknowledged their procurement policy and noted that “palm oil cultivation has also been responsible for widespread clearing of primary tropical forests, draining of peat soils, catastrophic fires in Southeast Asia, and a number of other negative social and environmental impacts…” The press release continued, “NRDC and HECO recognize that voluntary certification is not a panacea. There are limits to the effectiveness of voluntary certification in addressing the problems of today’s commodity market for palm oil, in particular, and vegetable oils in general. However, by enacting this policy, we will be taking the first step towards creating a working model for sourcing sustainable palm oil. We hope that this model sends a powerful market signal and helps to create a foundation for the development and expansion of mandatory sustainability standards across the marketplace.” Others disagree with the assumptions made by HECO and NRDC. Kelly King, vice president of Pacific Biodiesel, which has produced fuel since 1997 from recycled vegetable fryer oil, was outspoken about palm oil imports and the proposed size of the BlueEarth refinery. In a July 2008 Hawaii Business magazine feature article titled “Maui’s Bumpy Road to Renewable Energy,” King said, “The amount of fuel they’re talking about processing, we don’t have that much land. It will always be dependent on imports at that level.

I

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

“As soon as it leaves the shores and gets shipped across the world to Hawaii, that’s not a good thing and that’s not sustainable for us,” King continued. “It’s not a resource we can rely on.” ECO has also announced plans to partner with a firm doing tests in Kona for an algae-to-biodiesel project near their Ma`alaea generating facility. Yet most industry experts agree that the high hopes of commercial scale production at an economically viable price are years away, if indeed the are attainable at all.

M

Curiously, the recently announced Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, jointly signed by the Governor, HECO and the Office of the Consumer Advocate, shows a timeline to 2030 that does not include any renewable generation from biofuels on Maui. The timeline for Oahu, however, indicates there are plans for 110 megawatts to be generated using biofuels by 2010, and 308mw by 2015. So what is the future of BlueEarth Biofuels LLC, or of any other entity taking over the biodiesel refinery project proposed last year? As of press time, calls had not been

returned from the offices of Ed Reinhardt, President of MECO, and Stahlkopf, named as one of the defendants in the lawsuit. Life of the Land’s Henry Curtis is a staunch advocate for appropriate local renewable energy sources who has challenged HECO’s impending contract to import palm oil for biodiesel. Said Curtis, “We find it interesting that this lawsuit was filed on October 6, 2008, the start of the evidentiary hearing for the Biofuels Docket at the Public Utilities Commission. Is HECO fiddling while their biofuel plans burn?” MTW

enters the offseason with a WS ring and a strong position from which to negotiate a hefty pay raise. The bad news: now I don’t have an excuse to watch baseball on the company dime…Rhetoric vs. reality: Superferry CEO Tom Fargo told The Maui News the company is in a “sound financial position.” At the same time, plans to launch service between Oahu and the Big Island have been shelved at least until 2010, and there’s that little matter of a pending date with the Hawaii Supreme Court. Wonder if Fargo has the same speechwriter as John “fundamentals of the economy are strong” McCain? THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30 This story slipped through the cracks last week, but it could have serious legs. An attorney who has locked horns with the county over TVRs is spearheading an effort to recall Mayor Tavares. The movement’s still in the early stages and we’ll see how far it gets, but it hasn’t been squashed as of this writing. Whatever the merits of the claim, recalls are tricky things—while they’re sometimes an effective mechanism for ejecting unworthy public officials, they can also allow interest groups with a narrow focus or a petty axe to grind to highjack the process, often with bad results. (See: California and the Governator.) Again, not necessarily saying this recall is entirely bogus, but caution should be the word of the day. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31 Just got back from a long night of revelry, er, reportage on Front Street and I’m not too proud to admit I should wait until morning to log my official report. I’m also probably going to have to spell-check the hell out of these two sentences.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1 So yes, Halloween in Lahaina. It happened, people came, the world didn’t explode. The sidewalks were pretty packed and there were a few bars and restaurants turning folks away because they’d reached capacity. But several Front Street veterans tell me the crowd was nowhere near what it’s been in the past. Business owners concurred, and had no kind words for the CRC. Keeping the street open to traffic was an especially boneheaded call (though credit is due to the cops on hand for neutralizing a potentially explosive equation—moving vehicles plus darkness plus stumbling drunks). In the end, after all the squabbling and buildup, the whole thing was a tad anticlimactic. It kind of felt like a surprise party where everyone shows up and hides behind the furniture, but the birthday girl never walks through the door. The real question is, now that the “What’s gonna happen?” novelty has worn off, what will the party look like next year? And if the answer is: pretty dead, will Lahaina’s business community be able to take the hit?…Another update on the “financially

Riders can get more info on the changes at www.hawaiisuperferry.com. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2 There was a time when I championed the third party cause and proudly voted Nader (yes, blame me). Eight years later, there’s still a part of me that believes it’d be good for the health of our democracy to add another viable voice to the conversation. But man, the third parties we’ve got need to get their shit together. For the past several weeks I’ve been inundated with e-mails from the camps of Nader, Barr, Baldwin et al. First a debate is promoted, then comes word it’s been cancelled over scheduling conflicts or will only feature a couple of the candidates because they can’t all agree on a format. People—you’re fragmented and marginalized as it is. This ridiculous infighting just pushes you closer to the brink of total irrelevancy. I’m reminded of the classic scene from Monty Python’s Life of Brian in which the People’s Front of Judea bickers endlessly with the Judean People’s Front rather than their common enemy, the Romans. Except in that case it was funny; here it’s just pathetic. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3 Just got word that Obama’s grandmoth-

er, Madelyn Dunham, died last night on Oahu after a protracted battle with cancer. Dunham was by all accounts a strong and dynamic woman who, in addition to shaping the man who may well be the next President of the United States, rose up in the Hawaii banking industry at a time when her gender and even her race—she’s Caucasian—put her at a disadvantage. Whether you support the Democratic nominee or not, that Dunham’s death came two days before this historic election is undeniably, almost poetically sad. (And yes, time to eat a little crow for last week’s entry, wherein I wondered whether Obama’s recent visit to Grandma’s bedside was a campaign stunt designed to generate sympathy. Cynicism, or at least skepticism, is an essential tool that every journalist has to keep sharp—but it cuts both ways.) TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4 Today’s the day. It’s really here! It’s like Christmas morning and New Year’s Eve and your 21st and 16th birthdays and your golden anniversary all rolled into one! I’m typing these words before the polls close even on the East Coast, but I’m prepared to make one intrepid prediction: this country is going to wake up tomorrow with a huge, throbbing electoral hangover. And the realization’s going to sink in: different president-(elect), same big fucking mess. MTW

the Business End

Lawn & Garden Fair and Hawaiian Tree Give-away

A look at the week’s economic winners and losers... Halloween was a less spooky day than many that preceded it for a number of Hawaii-based companies. The big winner was perennial Business End whipping boy Maui Land & Pineapple—ML&P saw its stock rise almost 15 percent on Friday to close at $15.50 per share. Other in-state outfits—including Hawaiian Holdings Inc. and its subsidiary Hawaiian Airlines, Alexander & Baldwin, Central Pacific Financial Corps. and Bank of Hawaii—enjoyed more modest, but still significant, gains. Considering the ongoing volatility of the market, nobody’s calling this anything more than a pleasant blip. But when you’re hemorrhaging money and the economy’s teetering on the brink of full-blown recession, you take good news where you can find it. Given the love fest currently taking place between Gov. Lingle and Gov. Palin (we’re writing this ahead of the election and praying that doesn’t need to be amended to “VP-elect Plain”), it seems only fitting that Alaska Airlines is launching direct service from Anchorage to Kahului. The seasonal flights are set to run Friday, Saturday and Sunday through April 25. An Alaska Airlines spokesperson told Pacific Business News that the maiden voyage carried 145 passengers, just 12 shy of capacity.

With oil prices on a steady downward trajectory, Hawaii shipping companies continue to slash their rates. Earlier this week, Horizon Lines and Matson Navigation dropped their fuel surcharges to 25 percent; for Matson, that’s the fourth reduction in the past month-and-a-half. Effective November 9, Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines will also lower its surcharge, from 24.5 percent to 22.5 percent, as reported in PBN.

Though its lone Hawaii operation appears safe for now, Circuit City, the nation’s second largest electronics retailer, announced plans to close 155 stores nationwide. That represents nearly one-fifth of the company’s locations and will surely lead to massive layoffs. Or, as Circuit City put it in a statement quoted in PBN: “restructuring alternatives.” Man, if depressing euphemisms were dollars (or, better yet, euros), the national debt would be paid off with cash to spare. Not unlike a battered spouse giving her husband one more chance after he buys her flowers, Americans ran back into the arms of the mortgage industry this week in the wake of an interest rate cut. CNNMoney.com reports that home loan applications leapt almost 17 percent nationwide after the rate on a 30-year fixed was lowered from 6.46 percent to 6.06 percent. We’re hoping this rocky relationship ends happily ever after, but divorce court seems like a real possibility. MTW

Tommyrusso @barackobama Congrats. I'm not sure why you really wanted the job, but congrats. I know you want all Americans to unite, but just in case you need to see, in list form, the states that voted for McCain over you, here it is: Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, N. Dakota, S. Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Louisana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, S. Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. As you know, America really needs someone great. You asked for this. You asked for our votes, money & trust, and many Americans answered you. I did not give you money, but you did make the cover of @mauitime more than once and you did earn my vote. Although I'm quite hopeful, I don't expect America's challenges to be overcome overnight. I ask this of you @barackobama DO NOT LET AMERICA DOWN. Don't take our trust, money, votes and hope and squander our dreams for this great nation. I hope you really help change the world. But all I ask of YOU @barackobama, please don't let us down.

Katebradshaw @barackobama Sup. I know that your having been elected will not heal my broken foot, cure my deathly fear of giant cockroaches or stop the wars in time as to prevent my brother Steve’s third deployment. To me it signifies a shift in American consciousness, but I know your victory is due in greater part to the economy than the growing popularity of an ideology that embraces nuance and tolerance over blunt instruments. George W. Bush has been president for essentially my entire adult life. I’m accustomed to an administration that wants to turn this country into a fiefdom. While I’m ecstatic at everything your victory signifies, we need substance. I desperately hope that the change you plan to invoke goes beyond what’s on the surface.

Umalu for two Hyatt’s new outdoor restaurant pleases vegans, serves a mean steak esort food can be tricky, especially for those whose diets are somewhat restricted. Often their menus do not venture far beyond steak and lobster. For the vegan, whose diet bars them from

consuming animal products including dairy and eggs, options are often limited to comatose salad, slippery French fries and the undead pineapple slice that adorns his or her tropical beverage. Prior to my recent visit to Umalu, the Hyatt’s new outdoor restaurant, I called to make sure there were options. The voice on the other end told me it shouldn’t be a problem. Of course I couldn’t go solo; I had to bring someone to test out the non-vegan options and thus help me get a full picture of what the place has to offer. So I dialed up coworker Brittany and off we went. Upon arrival we were struck by the place’s atmosphere. While it’s an open-air establishment it maintains

an air of swank. From our table we could see and hear the hotel’s man-made waterfall. Streaming throughout was the sound of live classical guitar. The drink menu, which I snatched up upon sitting down, featured a sizable wine list, tasty beers on tap and a colorful selection of mixed drinks. I went for the Mutiny on the Carthaginian, which by name alone is worth ordering. It’s basically a Long Island Iced Tea with a guava twist. Very tasty; a bit sweeter than the standard-issue Long Island. Brittany ordered a small carafe of the house chardonnay. For first course I tried out the hummus and the vegetable lumpia; my non-vegan counterpart went with Umalu’s signature ahi poke nachos. One can’t really go wrong with hummus, and I could sense that this one was fresher than most. It was accompanied by assorted olives, marinated limes and sesame crackers. The lumpia, which are similar to spring rolls, were light, non-greasy and paired with a sweet Vietnamese dipping sauce. Brittany seemed to be digging the nachos, which were served with firecracker caviar, taro and sweet potato chips and edamame guacamole. Even though I could not partake I did find the dish to be one of the prettiest arrangements of food I’ve seen. For the main course I went with a meatless version of the sesame-orange chicken stir-fry. Brittany ordered the Angus filet of beef, which featured a Kona coffee rub,

glazed onion marmalade and a merlot reduction sauce. My Mutiny went pretty quickly, so I ordered a second drink; this time it was the Hot Maui Nights. Invented by one of Umalu’s own, this delightfully boozy concoction contains Pyrat rum, Plymouh gin, Triple sec and lime; not one of those beverages one should attempt if planning to skip dinner. The drink list had quite a few other appealing options, including the Tsunami, which contains Captain Morgan, Cruzan dark and coconut rums and pineapple juice. The entrees came out quickly. The sesame-orange sauce was phenomenal— sweet but not overpoweringly so. The veggies were cooked to a perfect consistency—not too crisp yet not overcooked. A tower of sticky rice accompanied the dish.

As for Brittany’s steak, even though I feel like I’m violating some kind of vegan code by writing this, I have to admit that she said it was possibly the best she’d ever had. She said it was “like candy, and not the cheap kind.” She went on to order mango-lilikoi cheesecake for desert; I chose to nurse my potion. This is definitely one of those places where even the pickiest of individuals can find a meal that is not only substantial, but also quite tasty. The staff was extremely kind and helpful with their recommendations. Location and aesthetics are of the can’t-possibly-go-wrong variety. My only regret is that we didn’t show up early enough to catch the sunset. But there’s always next time. After all, I still need to sample the Tsunami. MTW

Ska’s the limit Genre spanning Oahu band brings high-energy sound to Maui discovered ska at age 12, when my brothers turned me on to an assortment of Fishbone albums. My favorite was their 1985 selftitled debut. I can name a number of

I

Upstanding Youth Friday 10pm at Life’s a Beach, Kihei 891-8010 Saturday 10pm at Charley’s, Paia 579-9453

factors that contribute to the genre’s universal appeal: The catchiness that stems from prominent use of major chords; ska’s direct relation to reggae; the way it implements horns; and the playfulness that dominates even songs containing the gloomiest of outlooks.

Featuring daily Breakfast and Dinner Specials, Big Wave offers a unique blend of casual American cuisine blended with contemporary island flavors.

It is a music borne from political unrest and economic distress, which makes the genre even more important in current times. North Shore Oahu-based band Upstanding Youth, who will be on Maui this weekend for two shows, offers a brand of ska that explores the genre’s transformative potential. They come to Maui on the heels of their aptly titled latest release, A Sense of Urgency. The newest addition to their discography takes a detour into rockier territory. Inlaid with the horns, punchy rhythms and vocal inflection traditionally used in ska are streams of distorted guitar and rockinspired melodies; Urgency is all over the map, but not in a way that distracts. “We decided before writing the songs that we wanted to be creative within the genre, to try to do something new without straying from our original sound,” says guitarist and lead vocalist Marc Allred. “Something that would make ska more accessible to the mainstream.” The opening track, “Warning Call,”

serves as a perfect example of the record’s exploratory spirit. It opens with a simple yet electrified riff, eases into reggaestyle upstrokes and explodes into a distorted rock chorus. The track “Flying V” opens pretty much like a straightforward punk tune and wanders back into horn-laden ska when the verse rolls around. “Wailing and Gnashing” uses organs in a way that lends heaviness and drama to the tune. But each song differs substantially in its employment of elements from a diverse array of genres. While every tune incorporates horns, they seem to play a different role in each track, punctuating verses in tunes like “Headlights” and contributing to the buildup on songs like “Electric Fence.” The idea behind the record is that that time is running out on numerous fronts;

that youth and the band’s ability to focus on music are slipping. “One of the themes behind the title is that most of us are moving on with life, kids, careers, graduate degrees, and we feel an urgent sense to finish a great record before life takes over and we can’t devote time to music,” Allred says. While the central theme is time slipping away, Urgency also touches on topics like war (“Warning Call”) and selling out to evil corporations (“Wailing and Gnashing”). “I’m inspired by life and usually take a kind of political/theoretical slant to it,” says Allred. “In the end I always try to take something personal and specific and then relay that in a general way so that everyone can relate to it.” The end result is a record that carries high energy and never loses momentum. Upstanding Youth plays Friday at Life’s A Beach and Saturday at Charley’s. Acoustic Tides and 2008 Battle of the Bands finalist Highly Unlikely, whose versatile and creative sound and ultra-stylish look make for a pretty entertaining evening, open the Charley’s show. MTW

BY JACOB SHAFER JACOB@MAUITIME.COM

Fictional chief executives James Dale Mars Attacks! By the time you read this, we will have chosen a new commander-in-chief. Whichever guy it is, there’s no chance he’ll be as cool as Jack Nicholson—just imagine that elastic grin and devilish glare in the Oval Office. That’s exactly what director Tim Burton did imagine in his 1996 sci-fi spoof. Best line, and one only unflappable Jack could successfully deliver: “I want the people to know they still have two out of three branches of government working for them, and that ain’t bad.”

Dr. Wilbur Daffodil11 Swain Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut Vonnegut’s semi-autobiographical, post-apocalyptic farce finds the disfigured, 7-foot-tall leader of the free world ruminating on his life and failures in the ruins of the Empire State Building. It’s Vonnegut at his most deliciously weird; freed from the restraints of logic and linear storytelling he weaves a tale of loneliness and lost love that’s almost as touching as it is absurd. While Dr. Swain (whose platform consists mostly of imposing an intricate social structure under which people are randomly assigned hundreds of cousins and siblings to promote unity) probably wouldn’t give Obama, McCain or even Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin a run for his money, in these surreal, heady times maybe we need a leader with big, crazy ideas who’s a few nails shy of a toolbox.

It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) Bob Dylan Though the leader in question is never named, Dylan’s scalding poetic opus offers a timeless line that’s worth remembering whenever we consider an elected official: “Even the President of the YOU-nited states sometimes must have to stand naked.” Buried amongst a pile of other lyrical gems that slice to the heart of angst and youthful disillusionment without ever devolving into maudlin cliché (no mean feat), the words serve as a stark reminder that, for better or worse, the hands that hold the country’s tiller are merely flesh and blood.

‘Role’ playing Stupid buddy comedy revels in, rises above formula

Twenty bucks says that ball’s on a collision course with his nuts. ean William Scott and Paul Rudd (who co-wrote the screenplay) star as energy drink pitchmen whose bad behavior puts them in a community service position where, for over 100 hours, they must inspire the lives of unruly children. leads have been cast according to their familiar comic personas—while both have shined in dramatic roles (particularly Rudd, an accomplished Broadway actor), they’ve been cast here in the kind of goofball parts that made them famous. They make an acceptable comedy team and are clearly willing to do anything for a laugh. As for the movie itself, nobody who pays to see this is going to care how predictable, relentlessly vulgar and formulaic it is. In fact, putting good taste aside, I laughed a lot; this has some of the funniest one-liners of the year.

The screenplay is sneakily clever, with quips about Marvin Hamlisch and Federico Fellini snuck into the mix of one-liners involving male and female genitalia. The film is similar in a lot of ways to Step Brothers but more inventive; the story is familiar but the laughs rarely stop. This plays like one of the better Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell comedies. The only part of the movie that doesn’t work is the love story, featuring Elizabeth Banks as Rudd’s girlfriend. Banks is wasted and little is done with her character; they may as well have cast an unknown for such a thankless role. On the other hand, Kate Lynch is a riot as an off-kilter supervisor and Joe Lo Truglio (of Reno 911!), cast as an insanely dedicated Renaissance reenactor, brings his comic turn to a level of madcap art. Christopher MintzPlasse (the Superbad scene stealer) is completely typecast as a hopeless nerd and, while he gives it everything he’s got, I can’t help but worry that this guy is going to be playing variations on McLovin until he’s 97. Director David Wain also helmed the cult classic Wet Hot American Summer, which similarly took a typical comedy vehicle and turned it on its ear. Prepare to laugh. A lot. MTW

MOVIECAPSULES Maui Film Festival CHOKE - R - Comedy - Based on a novel by Chuck Pahlaniuk of the same title, this is probably your best bet. BURN AFTER READING - R - Comedy With films like Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men under the Coen Brothers’ belt it’s hard not to get one’s hopes up for this one. Hedonists rejoice

Friday only: Market Street rocks

Friday (Nov. 7), 6-9pm, Coral Reef Room, Sheraton Maui

Friday (Nov. 7), 5-8:30pm, Market Street, Wailuku

I give props to Starwish, a Sheraton Maui charity that benefits the local community. Yeah, the generosity part is nice, but I especially appreciate that they had the class to not give their inaugural Fall Festival of Wines a holiday theme. The fact that stores put up the red and green the morning after Halloween proves that there is a miserably gaping hole in our collective soul. The organizers of this festival, however, chose not to go that route. Instead they are focusing on what’s important: the wine. A handful of wine distributors will be pouring the goods this evening, which means that you can do more than catch a sweet wine buzz while socializing; you can also learn a thing or two about the many and varying incarnations of the grape. Wines will be paired with appropriate hors d’ouvres. By the end of the night you can officially call yourself a wine snob. Admission is $50 in advance; $60 the night of the event.

First Friday is usually a pretty tame event for an event with such potential. It seems as though with the right music, food, events and, I suppose, promotion, the monthly street party could be a real rager. This month’s First Friday celebration could help take it in that direction, as a pretty killer lineup seems to have come together for the event. Three major Maui acts will take the stage along Market Street, and proceed to blow the lid off the place thereafter. Wildly popular local kine band Na Koho will play between 5:30 and 8pm in Banyan Tree Park. They’ve been getting some major airplay in recent weeks, and have snagged a pretty high slot in local charts. The band is celebrating their new selftitled release. Playing at Maui Thing on the opposite end of the street is the insanely talented Vince Esquire Band, a rock and roll outfit that can effortlessly shake Wailuku town to its core. Seriously, check these guys out. Meanwhile, Kanoa of Gomega will be securing good vibes at Cafe Marc Aurel. Plus: a pie-eating contest!

Hot trivia nerds unite!

Friday (Nov. 7), 10pm, Sports Page, Kihei

Every Thursday, Dog & Duck, Kihei

The sea monster occurs in the lore of nearly every culture except, of course, in those of landlocked populations. In the cases of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Moby Dick the unknown monstrosity of the deep makes for a killer story signifying man’s destined failure to gain dominion over nature. Age of Exploration maps feature imaginary sea creatures in areas between landmasses. Since then species like the colossal squid, basking shark and the oarfish have been tagged as likely inspirations for such legends. That said, it also makes for a killer band name. Kihei-based rock trio Seamonster, which plays Friday evening in Kihei, generates the kind of sounds that are synonymous with the deep. Their music is dark and dynamic and creatively layered interesting sounds. Lyrically they focus almost exclusively on Maui. They refer to various locales throughout the island as well as the types of people and experiences one can only confront on the Valley Isle. So while nearly every place in the world has its own sea monster lore, this may be the one place where you can find one in the flesh.

Curses! You have bested us this time, Just Happy to Be Here. You have knocked us from our weeks-long first place roost, but just you wait. Next week, as a phoenix from the ashes of humiliation and defeat, the Rusty Trombones shall rise again to the triumphant glory of first place. I call upon all know-it-alls who enjoy beer to form their own nerd militias and take up mental arms against a common enemy. Those who daily pack their skulls with facts both pointless and pertinent can finally be of some use, and I call on them with an urgency that can be felt in the air. Relish the spoils of Pabst and Blue Moon to the comforting sounds of cohost Brian Fitzpatrick’s filthy commentary. Learn the method for correctly guessing hostess Linda Beaver’s underwear color (Round #1, Question 10). I will show you how, brave soldier. The Rusty Trombones will restore their Pub Quiz reign and put the usurpers back in their place…last place!

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) The election’s over, Scorpio. There’s no real need to continue your small-scale politicking, but you may still discover some benefit to glad-handing everyone you see. Even though the “votes” (so to speak) have been cast, and decisions made, not everyone has truly made up their mind. Unlike the real election, some of these choices can be undone. If they didn’t go exactly the way you’d planned or hoped, keep working it. It’s not over until the fat lady’s sung, and she’s keeping her pie hole shut, for now. If you’re persistent and persuasive, you might get your way yet.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You don’t consider yourself to be a creature of habit, which is why you’re not necessarily on the lookout for the warning signs that you might be stuck in an invisible rut of some kind. Although most of the time you’ve embraced change in your life, and rolled with it quite ably, in some cases lately you’ve been dragging your feet just a bit. Someone’s bound to call you out about it sooner or later, but before you drag out all the examples of times when you’ve leapt before you looked, shut your mouth and listen. This time they may be right. It’s not like you to be so fearful and conservative. Shake it off and jump into this new thing, already.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The problem with being so capable, organized, and determined, is that if you get pointed in the wrong direction, you can go quite far before you realize you ought to reverse course; at which point it’s that much harder, of course. Usually, you’re quite sensible and avoid these kinds of mistakes, but when you make them, the consequences are long-lasting and profound. That’s why I wouldn’t blow it off if anyone warns you that you might be doing the wrong thing. Double-check what you’re up to. Other signs can get away with just diving in and figuring it out along the way, but you’re such a strong swimmer that I wouldn’t recommend that. If you end up too far out to sea, even you’d have trouble making it back to shore.

AFTER BEFORE

Less is more

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It’s a war between the homebody and the social butterfly. One of you wants to go out all the time, the other is happiest staying in. This can be a huge source of conflict in any relationship, even a friendship. Poorly thought out compromises (homebody goes out more than s/he’d like, butterfly stays in more than s/he wants to) often make both people miserable. On the other hand if you both do your own thing too much, what’s the point of your relationship anymore? These are the questions that’ll figure largely in this week. They could lead to a break-up of sorts, unless you two work hard right now to get to a happy, sustainable place located somewhere between your two perfect scenarios; luckily such a place actually exists—you just need to find it.

Laser Genesis

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You can’t rush perfection. Luckily, what you’re up to is never going to be perfect, and thus there’s no real reason why you can’t pick up the pace. In fact, you really ought to; dragging your feet and then delivering something that’s good but not great (or even great but not amazing) isn’t likely to win you many admirers. Just get it done, already. Do it well enough to quell serious critics, but fast enough that you don’t get called out on your snail’s pace. The sooner you get this out of the way, the sooner you can move on to the stuff that’ll really make you shine.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation with our “Lunchtime” Laser See results in 8 weeks without down time, pain, redness, or peeling.

• Corrects skin tone, pore size, & skin tightness • 3 Sessions = $500 (reg. $900)

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) There’s no point in making demands when you have no leverage; it’ll just make you look silly. Instead, begin your negotiations from a sweeter, more humble place. You don’t need what you’re asking for, after all, though it’d be nice. Just ask for it, and don’t be afraid to compromise or make concessions if it’ll help you get it. There’s no need to be a tyrant, diva, or brat, and lots of reasons why you shouldn’t. Pointblank ultimatums are only likely to get you laughed at. If that’s what you’re going for, though, by all means make some.

Lowest Prices on Maui • Permanent laser hair removal • Botox $11 per unit

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Oh look, there’s Negative Nancy. She’s that friend who won’t even acknowledge the bright sides or silver linings in life. Everything is doom and gloom with her. You know this. Why, then, are you suddenly taking her words to heart? You can see how she manifests a crap reality just by believing it will be so. Don’t follow her example. It’s one thing to be realistic, and quite another to actively create a negative scenario. You’re about to do the latter, but it’s not too late to turn it around. There is a bright side and silver lining to even your darkest situations. Look for, and focus on, that.

PAIA • 579-8979 Committed to making medical cosmetic services affordable

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Demanding, much? You don’t usually consider yourself all that needy or bossy, but you do have your moments. This week you might have a handful of them. Be wary of whining, bitching, or being domineering this week, as it’s likely to ruffle more than a few feathers, and secure you a persistent reputation you only temporarily deserve. Put on your most laidback, optimistic, and chill self. Let the bullshit slide off your back even more than usual. Remember, the less crap and negativity you take on board now, the less you’ll have to unload later.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) I understand your reluctance to accept favors from people you don’t know well. Who knows what strings might be attached? Unfortunately, you may not have much choice. Sometimes you just have to take help where you can get it. Stop being so picky and snobbish. Everyone needs a hand now and again, and sometimes you don’t get to determine just who will give it to you, or how. Just take what you can get, and don’t forget to be gracious and grateful for it; it’s a whole lot more than many people have available to them.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Instead of demanding and expecting the respect and appreciation you assuredly deserve, simply look around. There are some people who are already giving it to you, honoring who and what you are. Even if they’re not all the people you wished would see how great you are, please give them the love they’re lavishing on you, and don’t spend all your time sowing the favor of those who haven’t quite cottoned on to your virtues. You’ll have time to convert the faithless heathens to your cult of personality later. For now, focus your radiant benevolent attentions on those who already think you’re divine.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Doom and gloom spreads more easily than optimism. People are all too willing to take on grim predictions and negativity. That’s why, if your agenda is to make the world a better place, you have to work twice as hard as the pessimists at spreading your message. You also have to watch your credibility; being positive without being realistic is likely to backfire on you. There is a light at the end of nearly every tunnel; it’s possible to focus on that hopeful possibility (instead of the dark doom of the tunnel itself) without pretending it’s closer or brighter than it is.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Sometimes you have no idea how much trouble you’re in until you’re neck-deep; sometimes you know just how badly what you’re up to could play out. I don’t know which is worse, going into something with your eyes open, dreading the moment it all turns to shit, or being surprised by unexpected consequences but enjoying yourself thoroughly up until then. I do know who’s more likely to avoid the trouble altogether: the person who’s looking out for it the entire time. Don’t embrace ignorance, no matter how blissful it might be. Looking ahead with unclouded vision may produce more anxiety, but it’s also likely to produce better results.
