Know Your DUI Politician! So Maui County Councilman Dain Kane went and got busted for driving under the influence. And on Kauai, of all places. “It was a personal thing,” the father of the county’s anti-smoking ordinance said in The Maui News on Nov. 24, 2005. “I was spending some time with family and friends. It’s unfortunate. I regret that it happened and I will take full responsibility for my actions.” In the world of public officials, Kane is now a member of a pretty exclusive club: guys who drink and drive while holding the public’s trust. And while I’d love to include President George W. Bush and Vice Dick Cheney on the list, both earned their respective DUIs—one for Dubya and two for Vice—long before either got into politics.
drunk driving laws. Even so, Levdansky ended up avoiding jail and winning reelection.
JACK KULP
DAVID GRAVES
In December 2003 Maui County Managing Director Jack Kulp got a DUI at a Maui Police checkpoint. Originally planning to fight the constitutionality of the checkpoint, saying it excluded mopeds and cyclists, he ended up pleading guilty. He was sentenced to 240 hours community service and $500 fine, but by then he’d already resigned from Mayor Alan Arakawa’s administration.
This crafty Republican state representative from Macon, Georgia tried a novel approach to his February 2005 DUI arrest (at the time, he also had a pending DUI arrest from March 2004). Graves—who chaired the state House committee overseeing the local liquor industry—tried to say that since his arrest came during the state House’s 2005 session, he had “legislative immunity” from prosecution. Judge Irma B. Glover didn’t buy it, and found him guilty. He won’t lose his House seat, but he will have to spend 10 days in jail, pay a $1,600 fine, do 20 days of home confinement, perform 240 hours of community service and lose his driver’s license for up to 18 months.
WAYNE NISHIKI South Maui Councilman Wayne Nishiki racked up two DUIs during his many terms of office. He pleaded no contest to his first in 1998, and ended up getting a $332 fine and 14 hours of alcohol abuse counseling. Four years later he was at it again. But this time he pleaded guilty and lost his license for a year. Neither conviction hurt his reelection campaigns. *Same day booking only subject to availability. Kama’aina friends and family! Only one ID requred.
DAVID LEVDANSKY This 10-term Democratic state representative from Pennsylvania got popped for DUI in the spring of 2004. It was an especially inopportune moment: not only was he in the middle of a reelection campaign, but he’d also just finished toughening the state’s
KEVIN BRADY Brady, a five-term Republican congressman from Southeast Texas, got arrested on Oct. 7 of this year for DUI in South Dakota. He pled no contest. Since it was his first arrest, he ended up getting just a $350 fine, $53 in court fees and a prohibition from driving in South Dakota for 30 days (some wouldn’t exactly call that last sentence “punishment,” but the legal system often works in strange ways). His fellow Texas Republicans consider Brady’s chances for reelection next year good. MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the woman with the three kids who showed up at Wal-Mart a few Fridays ago. No one ever told you that it wasn’t a good idea to go shopping with the little ones? Yeah, they require a lot of patience. But when they act up, you have no right to yell at them in public. They have feelings, too. Would you like it if someone did that to you? Next time, please take someone else with you to watch the kids while you shop. Or better yet, just leave them at home with your sister. It will be better for all of us.

Interesting Conflict An open letter to most of the Maui County Council Honorable Council Members Dain Kane, Danny Mateo, Charmaine Tavares, Bob Carroll, Joseph Pontanilla, Mike Molina and Riki Hokama: Just wanted to congratulate you guys. You really showed great wisdom and foresight by putting one of Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s corporate bigwigs on the new Maui County General Plan Advisory Committee. For the next two years or so, the committee’s 25 members will develop a General Plan for Maui County that should guide all local development for at least a generation. Considering our dwindling water resources, inadequate infrastructure and
munity in the success of the corporation.” And they weren’t hesitant about putting Anderson in her place. “The positive part is that most of the Maui County Council’s members understand that an individual [Suzuki] who has worked hard all of his life and succeeded deserves as much of a voice in the affairs of Maui County as any person in the community,” read the unsigned editorial. “Fortunately, most council members saw through Anderson’s innuendo that someone raised in the islands who has achieved personal success can no longer be trusted to be ethical. Her request to deny or defer Suzuki’s appointment was soundly, and deservedly, rejected.” Damn! See how they twisted around her very
WHAT WERE YOU GOING TO DO? TURN ON MAUI LAND & PINE IN THEIR HOUR OF NEED? growing population, the stakes are high. Which is why it was so important that MLP have a seat at the table. They’ve got 28,000 undeveloped acres in the county. That’s a huge responsibility, and one that requires them to make sure that you public officials keep all zoning, water and infrastructure rules conforming to their wishes. Look, I’m sure you guys already know this. Campaign finance records show virtually all of you—except for Bob Carroll, but nobody’s perfect—have cashed Maui Land & Pine checks at one time or another. (They really seem to like you, Kane— $1,000 in 2004 alone? Nice!) What were you going to do? Turn on Maui Land & Pine in their hour of need? Of course not. So I can only imagine how awkward it was when Council Members Michelle Anderson and Jo Anne Johnson—two of your own!—began complaining in early November that MLP’s boy Warren Suzuki was nothing more than a lobbyist and shill for the company and putting him on the General Plan Advisory Committee brought about at least the appearance of impropriety. Thank goodness The Maui News ran cover for you. After all, the Cameron family, which formed MLP, owned the paper for 99 years. When the News saw that you and its former master were in trouble, they took the extraordinary step of publishing an actual editorial pushing an actual controversial opinion. “Maui Land & Pine remains the largest successful corporate entity wholly based on the island of Maui, providing direct employment to some 3,000 people,” the News opined on Nov. 22. “While the corporate leadership has changed, Maui Land & Pine still shows it is aware of the linkage between the success of the com-

legitimate argument that you guys were giving special treatment to a company with billions of dollars worth of future projects that would surely fall into the Advisory Committee’s sphere of influence? Then they made it sound like she was bashing a local boy who made good. That kind of slick argument isn’t easy to do, especially for an editorial page that likes to denounce traffic speeding in all its forms. Then again, even you had to admit that Anderson had a point: guys like Suzuki have a fiduciary responsibility to their publicly traded companies to maximize shareholder return. MLP could fire Suzuki if he was doing things on the General Plan Advisory Committee that made it even the least bit difficult for his company. You see, Suzuki—MLP’s Senior Vice President in charge of community relations and corporate communications since March, 2004—really is a company lobbyist. And a very political one, at that. Just before the 2004 elections, MLP broke with long precedent and began circulating county council endorsements. According to one of the mailers, the company chose candidates who “share[d] our vision for Maui’s future.” Commenting to Maui News reporter Harry Eagar in a Oct. 29, 2004 piece, Suzuki said the company took the extraordinary step “To be sure to be able in the longer term to achieve our vision.” It pretty much goes without saying that the names “Michelle Anderson” and “Jo Anne Johnson” were nowhere to be found on MLP’s list of approved council candidates. In fact, Maui Land went out of its way to help challengers to both. Anyway, nice work. I’m sure Maui Land & Pine won’t hesitate to return your generosity in the future. MTW

LC Watch The Royal Treatment
The Maui County Department of Liquor Control doesn’t exactly go out and party very often. But when they do, it can be a real blowout. Case in point is the 2005 State Liquor Conference, held Oct. 9-12, 2005 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on Hawai’i. Now to be fair it was more of a conference— attended by liquor officials from all over the state—than it was an actual party, but it was at one of the swankier resorts in the state. The Hapuna Beach Prince has an 18-hole golf course, six restaurant/lounges, 350 ocean-facing guest rooms, tennis courts, spas, fitness centers, a beauty salon and nightly stargazing events. Oh, and every guest is supposed to get a free glass of Passion Orange Juice upon arrival. It wasn’t cheap, either. According to expense reports filed by the 10 Liquor Commissioners and Adjudication Board members who went—Donald Fujii, Joe Tanaka, Zachary Helm, Frances Meshulam, Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama, Edwin “Ken” Yokouchi, Mary Doreen Alborano, Marilyn Chapman, Lance Collins and Tami Nascimento—the conference cost the department $10,876.99, assuming my math is correct. That total includes $2,850 to cover the conference fees for the 10 attendees ($285 per person), $3,596.40 in travel reimbursements ($359.64 per person), $2,600 in per diem advances ($260 per person) and $1,782.59 in airfare advances (an average of $186 per person) and the odd parking fee reimbursement, which ran about $20. And it all came out of the LC’s budget, funded by all the liquor license fees and fines it’s been collecting. Now according to the LC’s 2005 Annual Report, they’re $659,425.99 in the black, so it’s not like even 10 grand in expenses put the squeeze on the department. Oh, and apparently everyone learned a lot. At the Nov. 3, 2005 Adjudication Board hearing, the attendees said they saw the “dynamic” Bill Kanoi, who works in the Hawai’i Island Mayor’s office. They saw a “gruesome” presentation by a couple of paramedics. And they learned from a Norwegian Cruise Lines official that LC investigators couldn’t board ships floating offshore, even if they were trying to enforce county liquor laws.

SATURDAY, NOV. 26
Seems everybody’s talking about how great the economy is around Hawai’i. “Oh, the economy is so great! Have you seen the economy lately? It’s great. No, really. It’s greater than great. Oh, how great the economy is these days.” Practically goes without saying that it’s the focus of a big Associated Press story in today’s Maui News. The reason why the state’s economy is booming is no mystery: land development. “Construction jobs are expected to hit 32,000 by the end of the year, a full 10 percent higher than last year,” wrote AP reporter David Briscoe. “That’s also twice the growth rate of 2004 over 2003.” Twice the growth rate! Woohoo! At this rate we’ll finally be able to ditch that antiquated nickname “Valley Isle” in favor of something far more modern. I’m thinking “Condo Isle.” I think it’ll catch on. Because plentiful condos and the promise of newer, larger condos are the reason so many people move to Maui, right? Or did I miss something?
What is this, the week of strange business news? Mighty Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is reporting more people are traveling on their cruise ships and spending more cash on board than ever before, but they made less money than last year. Rising fuel costs—screw you, OPEC!—are part of the reason, but mostly the company says “increased payroll costs” are really hitting them where it hurts. The reason they’re gushing money, according to a Nov. 23 online Pacific Business News story? “[I]ncreased payroll costs associated with U.S. crew used in the company’s interisland cruises in Hawai’i.” Or to put it another way, NCL is just a Pride of Aloha or two away from tough times. Boo yeah!
THURSDAY, NOV. 24 It’s Thanksgiving! Really, it’s the bestest holiday of the year, because nothing more is expected of you except eating a lot of hearty food and maybe indulging in a drinking game or two involving playing cards, Bud Light in a can and organic pecans. Ahh… holidays on Maui.
FRIDAY, NOV. 25 Pacific Business News is reporting today that Peter D. Baldwin of the rather well known Baldwin family has resigned his seat on the Bank of Hawai’i Board of Directors—a seat he’s, um, sat in since 1991. Says he wants to pursue more “personal and family interests.” Huh? It’s a bank board— how much work could they do in a week?
COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
SUNDAY, NOV. 26 Worst news ever in today’s Maui News: The Royal Lahaina Resort is coming down. Something ominous sounding called the Royal Lahaina Development Group LLC intends to “revitalize” the site, which currently holds the kitschiest, gawdiest, most outlandish vision of Hawai’i this side of Disneyland. But one company officer told the News that no one had anything to fear: “We’re not going to scrap the entire property,” said LLC member Matthew Delaney. So they’re only going to take out most of the property? A sliver of the property? What are they leaving, the parking lot? How generous. You know, the Royal Lahaina is historic. It was the first resort in Ka’anapali, though it was just a tennis club until 1966. But when it finally had rooms, they started booking some real swingers. Dean Martin stayed there—he even, as the story goes, declined to remove his golf shoes while walking through the lobby, which led to him slipping and falling in the fountain. Good times. And Frank Sinatra stayed there, too—apparently he once made a valet go into Lahaina

Town to fetch him some sardines and bananas. And they want to tear all that down? No! That’s some vintage Rat Pack history right there! I mean, it isn’t Deano getting all plastered and pouring a glass of scotch over his head at a Don Rickles show in Vegas, but it’s pretty damn close.
MONDAY, NOV. 28 So I guess that whole sweetheart relationship between state Senator J. Kalani English (D, 6th District) and Hawaii Air Ambulance is over. According to yesterday’s Maui News, the usually good-guy elected official signed onto an agreement with the Hawai’i State Ethics Commission to pay a $1,000 fine and admit that he flew on Air Ambulance flights and stayed in the Honolulu apartment of Air Ambulance CEO Andrew

More bad news on the bottle bill front. You people are still returning those nickeldeposit plastic bottles like there’s no tomorrow—by the way, there actually isn’t a tomorrow, so plan accordingly—and that’s fantastic. What’s less fantastic is the new report from state Auditor Marion Higa saying that there’s no way to track any of the $39 million the state Department of Health supposedly took in as of June 30. That’s because the department has no real accounting system to deal with the incoming bottles. “Potentially the department could be paying for nonexistent and unlabeled containers,” the report said, according to a recent Pacific Business News story. Oh, and auditors found that people trying to redeem plastic bottles have to do so in the face of long lines, poor customer service and redemption centers that only occasionally open on schedule. That’s very sad—not we’re talking losing-the-Royal-Lahaina sad, but sad nonetheless.

Kluger. In exchange, the commission dropped the charges against him. That’s it. No big, drawn out battle, no trial—not even an admission of wrongdoing. What a rip-off. This thing has been in The Maui News since October 2004 (not October 2005, as the paper oddly reported) and all we get is a lousy agreement that he flew in a helicopter? Man, those lucky stiffs in San Diego, California got a press conference today from their very teary-eyed Republican Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham who announced he was resigning after eight terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. I mean, sure, the usually right-wing nutbar said he was quitting because he had just pled guilty to taking $2.4 million in bribes from defense contractors and that he’d brought “shame” upon his family and voters, but is taking a couple freebie trips in a helicopter really all that different from pocketing a couple million in bribes from companies that wanted government companies? Okay, don’t answer that.

Hawaiian Telcom is rising because they’re still running tons of TV commercials and all those giant full-color ads in local papers. That kind of publicity isn’t cheap to anyone but its parent owner Carlyle Group. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD GOOD SCIENCE TIP “Cow-tipping” (the legendary prank of sneaking up on a dozing cow and pushing her over) was exposed as a near-impossibility by researchers at the University of British Columbia, according to a November report in The Times of London. Calculating the newtons of force required to topple an average cow (estimating the angles between left hooves, right hooves and the point of push; and the resistance of the cow to downward pressure), Dr. Margo Lillie found that two people could exert the required force only if the cow made no reaction at all to the initial touch, but that more than likely, a successful tipping would require at least five people.
PROZAC NATIONS An official adviser to the Blair government warned in September that Britain urgently needed 250 special treatment centers, staffed by 10,000 therapists, to deal with what he called the country’s “biggest social problem”: a national epidemic of “unhappiness.” And in October, German companies donated the equivalent of about $35 million for a media campaign to make their countrymen feel better about themselves. Sample script: “[O]utdo yourself. Beat your wings and uproot trees. You are the wings. You are the tree. You are Germany.”
LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Adam Turgeon, 27, and Lisa Wagner, 26, were arrested in October for vandalizing the Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church in Decatur, Ala., which they both said they were moved to do by Jesus Christ himself. Turgeon explained that the couple, independently, had experienced visions of

Jesus, and when they found themselves in services on Oct. 2, they re-enacted the part of their dreams in which they wrecked the church’s altar as a protest against “manmade religion” and idolatry. Turgeon said he was especially bothered by people who balance their checkbooks during church services and by religions that believe only parts of the Bible.
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Barbara King, 35, was arrested in Largo, Fla., in October on a warrant for forgery and prescription fraud; when police knocked on her door, a man told them that she wasn’t home, but a 4-year-old girl standing alongside said, “Mommy’s in the closet!” And police in Memphis, Tenn., reported in October that they had closed down a crack house on Rosamond Street, a task made easier because the resident usually announced the start of business hours by hanging out a sign reading, “Crack House.”
WOMEN DRIVERS In a September road-rage incident in Salt Lake City, a woman sped by in a blocked-off lane to get around a 25-year-old motorist on Interstate 15, then rolled down her window and screamed at him. The man, according to a report in the Deseret Morning News, made an “obscene hand gesture.” The woman then pulled out a .357-caliber revolver, shot off the tip of his middle finger, and sped away, outdistancing the man but later crashing into a barricade.
SMOOTH REACTIONS Car salesman Philip Vandergraff, 35, was arrested in September on a battery charge after an incident at a Ford dealership in Atascadero, Calif. According to customer Jeff Walston, the two were haggling over a car purchase, and when Walston offered $5,000 less than Vandergraff’s price, Vandergraff punched him in the face. MTW

Expose the Cluelessness How the media can restore credibility WMDs press releases into the Times to help build support for the invasion of Iraq, is being characterized as a rogue reporter by the same editors who encouraged and published her tripe. And the punditocracy is going along. She “should be promptly dismissed for crimes against journalism, and her own newspaper,” Greg Mitchell wrote in the industry trade journal Editor & Publisher. “And Bill Keller, executive editor, who let her get away with it, owes readers, at the minimum, an apology.” Slate.com media critic Jack Shafer, on the other hand, would settle for a mere “explanation.” The sad fact is that Miller and Blair, rather than rare exceptions, reflect the endemic vices of elitism, unaccountability and star worship that afflict our journalistic institutions beginning with top management. It will take more than another pro forma mea culpa to rebuild their eroded credibility. Systemic changes are essential:
Jayson Blair, non-role model Judith Miller, the mousy Bush Administration propaganda mouthpiece forced to retire from The New York Times last week, is hardly an anomaly. American journalism is contaminated by widespread institutional corruption. Yet coming on the heels of the same paper’s humiliation by phony Times reporter Jayson Blair and Stephen Glass’ reign of error at The New Republic, the Miller mess’ further contribution to the media’s ever-diminishing credibility—the Gallup poll finds that 49 percent of Americans consider the news mostly or completely unreliable—has prompted industry insiders to propose cures so toothless that they only expose the cluelessness of those proposing them. Miller, who cut-and-pasted the White House’s Saddam-has-

• Journalists shouldn’t get cozy with government officials. Shafer wrote in 2003: “[Judith] Miller grew incredibly close to numerous Iraqi sources, both named and anonymous, who gave her detailed interviews about Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction.” Like giant squid and sperm whales, politicians and reporters should be natural enemies. Press conferences produce lies, not news. What comes out of them should be treated as news only after it has been independently verified. • They should be accessible. “Isolation impairs accountability,” says Philip Seib, author of a book on reporting in the cyber era. An Ivory Tower mentality keeps news away. It’s easier to track down Dick Cheney in his undisclosed location than to get your local news anchorperson on the phone. Every newspaper by-line should carry its writer’s direct phone number and email address, and they should be required to return their messages. • Reveal biases, even in feature pieces. If media outlets host a grudge match, they ought to own up to it at the top of the piece so readers can take the relevant history into account. Better still, just don’t assign pieces where there’s a conflict of interest. • Stop hiring out of J-School. Journalism school graduates are likelier to come from wealthy families, have less work experience in other fields and identify with powerful elites. J-Schools contribute to the lack of racial and class diversity in newsrooms, which remain 86 percent white— further separating them from their communities. • Ban patriotism. While I was covering the war in Afghanistan in 2001, a colleague from a major U.S. paper informed me: “We’ve captured Kunduz!” We? CNN mimicked Fox News’ perpetually waving stars-andstripes logo and TV anchors from Maine to Hawai’i sported flag lapel pins—a prop on state television in dictatorships. Even when the U.S. is at war, reporters should remain neutral. Skeptics make better journalists than patriots. • Embedded reporters are whores. If Judy Miller got too close to Ahmed Chalabi, she had nothing on the hundreds of ersatz journalists who rode into Iraq in American tanks and armored personnel carriers. “When the only safety for a reporter is being embedded with the U.S. military, the reported stories tend to have a positive spin,” Steve Weissman dryly observed. Reporters under military control invariably become subject to the Stockholm Syndrome. Reporters playing soldier sacrifice the popular goodwill that comes from being perceived as unbiased and thus increase the risk of attacks—such as beheadings in Iraq—against their peers. • Be suspicious of showboats. Lucky and well-connected reporters should always raise red flags. Stephen Glass’ editors loved him because he always turned in amazing stories—about a Wall Street shrine to Alan Greenspan or orgies of Young Republicans. The New York Times’ Jayson Blair always seemed to be at the right place at the right time when he was actually hanging out at his apartment. In the real world, lucky breaks and reliable sources are few and far between. As one of my first editors told my disconsolate self when I returned empty-handed from an assignment, “Write the truth. They refused to talk to you. So what? That’s a story too.” MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Nov. 22, 2005 press release on the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawai’i (HCDCH): “We appreciate [the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s] willingness to work with us to turn this agency around so that we can continue to focus on serving our residents who need public and assisted housing.”
What she didn’t say: It’s nice that the fed now considers the state’s housing agency “standard” instead of “troubled”—the days of slow repair work and derelict units seem to be coming to an end—but HCDCH remains controversial for an entirely different and completely legal reason. Developers wanting to build “affordable housing” units can go through the HCDCH and get their projects “fast-tracked,” which means they need no environmental review and have to face an up-or-down vote by their respective county council within 45 days. This seems great on paper, except when developers like Kent Smith (Pu’unoa, 2003) try to ram through their HCDCH housing projects as “affordable” when they really aren’t. -Anthony Pignataro

For the ignorant masses, Hawaiian music conjures images of Braddah Iz, shirtless beach boys strumming ‘ukulele and Don Ho appearing in that Brady Bunch episode in Hawai’i where Vincent Price lived in a cave with a tiki. That there’s so much more to Hawaiian music almost goes without saying. The music of Hawai’i has always been an integral part of the culture, from ancient chanting and ipu rhythms to modern fusions of rap, reggae and rock with slack key, or instrumental jazz renditions of standard Hawaiian classics. Whatever sub-genre “Hawaiian” incorporates, it’s a soulful music lyrically rooted in the language, nature, family, history and even food of the islands. As proof, here’s a quick look at some of the Hawaiian music CDs that have floated through our office recently. Kani ka pila!

HOWARD AHIA BAND
IT’S KILLING ME Passionate, edgy and melodic, the Howard Ahia Band’s latest CD rocks in a not-so-typical Hawaiian fashion. Howard Ahia is an accomplished guitarist and vocalist in one of Maui’s hardest working musical families, known mostly for island jazz and traditional Hawaiian tunes. But Ahia’s sound is distinctly his own—it would be deceptive to call it “Hawaiian” and is a strong example of how truly eclectic Hawaiian music can be. It’s Killing Me is an infectious album that would get much airtime on mainland college rock stations, evident especially in unforgettable tracks like “Birthday Song” and “Fly Away.” (SC)
DON HO
THE DON HO SHOW! This is a single-disc re-release of Don Ho’s first two albums, The Don Ho Show! and Don Ho—Again!, both full of his signature hapa haole music and recorded live at Duke Kahanamoku’s in Honolulu in the mid1960s, where he was billed as “the biggest thing from Hawai’i since sliced pineapple.” Listen for a few minutes, and you’ll swear you’re transported back to old Waikiki, or perhaps even a Hawaii FiveO episode. There’s three—three!—renditions of “Night Life,” which many Don Ho fans consider the story of his life. Don’t look for “Tiny Bubbles,” but there is “Suck ‘Em Up,” in which Ho calls on his tourist audiences to drink a lot. The album includes Ho’s covers of “La Bamba” and “Hang on Sloopy,” which are what they are. (AP)
NA PALI
NA PALI With 18 years between this release and their last one, Na Pali has had some time to reflect on their lives and synthesize their memories into a sometimes heavy but always polished sound. The Hawaiian steel guitar stands out on many tracks. The artists give tribute to so many Hawaiian ways in their music; it’s lovely to see new musicians carrying on traditions rooted in Hawaiian culture. In track nine by Carlos Andrade, the Ha’ena Ahupua’a in North Kauai is celebrated in song, preserving traditional Hawaiian names and stories within it. Carlos also gives ancient navigators and their companions, the stars, tribute in “The Navigator’s Lullaby.” Pancho Graham and Pat Cockett come through with their love songs and memories in sweet Hawaiian melodies. The wisdom of the times for the band reverberates in Andrade’s song “Inu i ka Wai ‘Awa ‘awa,” with translated vocals “Cry! Homeland/ Cry for Hawai’i, drink the bitter waters/ there is no retreat.” These sometimes somber but always enchanting melodies make this Na Pali a listening pleasure. In fact, I found myself entranced by the sixth track, “Waiting for the Rain.” After listening to it several times in a row, a southerly Kona storm blew in and the rain stayed a few days. I put the CD away until after the Thanksgiving holiday. (JR)
GYPSY PACIFIC
WELA Perhaps the only band of its kind, Gypsy Pacific blends classic Hawaiian tunes with the spirited “hot club” gypsy music of the 1930’s, inspired by Django Reinhardt. The result is an upbeat, instrumental Hawaiian swing that is undeniably appealing to lovers of all genres. Songs like “Sophisticated Hula,” “My Little Grass Shack” and “Beyond the Sea” get a playful, fresh twist that puts a bounce in your step and a smile on your face. Featuring accomplished musicians from Maui, Gypsy Pacific represents another facet of Hawaiian music that successfully embraces tradition and evolution with a unique style. Wela is their debut release. (SC)

HO’OKIPA (SOUNDTRACK) The Ho’okipa soundtrack is a great collection of island songs. The 10 tracks flow well as an album but because they’re performed by six different artists, the soundtrack has an eclectic feel. Artists include Cody Pueo Pata, well-known in the contemporary Hawaiian music scene; Assault Squad Riderz, a hip-hop group whose music has been described as having a mainland vibe with a local appeal; and Kahele, an upcoming group

known for incorporating various styles of music and the Hawaiian language into their work. Overall this album is a great survey of Hawaiian music and even more importantly, a great listen. (AF)
NA LEO
FEEL THE SPIRIT Na Leo consists of three lovely young ladies who give all their thanks to the Lord. They make beautiful music with a positive Christian message. The group has been together for 21 years and claim they have yet to make a CD like this before. Na Leo has already put out 15 albums but this proves to be the most contemporary yet. It’s charming to hear what they have to be so happy about. It makes you feel like being a better person and shake what the good Lord has given ya. (GP)
BIG EVERY TIME
UNIVERSITILE I’ve got three words: BOP, BOP, BOP! You know what I’m talking about. These tracks vary from hip-hop to reggae beats and could easily make up the soundtrack to a BBQ, a night out or a night in with your special one. Some songs are sweet professions of love, while others are of real Hawaiian history, and there are pleas for unity and rhymes about kickin’ it in the 808. It’s all in the spirit of Aloha. I highly recommend giving your ear over to these braddahs for an hour or so. (HK)
BILL TAPIA
LEI PULAMAHIA Ho’okena is a very prolific group putting out over eight CDs already, Lei Pulamahia being their ninth. The Three Tenors have nothing on these guys. Four very talented men sing their hearts out, though unless you speak Hawaiian, it’s gonna be difficult to know what they’re talking about. All in Hawaiian language, the CD stays in the category of Hawaiiana. This is what a person might hear in an elevator or over dinner at the Westin which is fine, except the performers wouldn’t get the credit they deserve. (GP)
DUKE OF UKE I listened to this collection of Bill Tapia’s very recent and very old ‘ukulele songs on a rainy morning, and it considerably brightened my mood. Born in Honolulu on the first day of 1908, Tapia’s been playing the ‘uke since he was seven, though since 1946 he’s unfortunately found it necessary to live and perform in California. Three of the album’s tracks—“Chinatown/Avalon,” “Hilo March” and “Indian Love Call”—are actually 1936 recordings: faster than his more recent tunes, and often quite grainy (as was the style of the time), they also lack much of the emotion that seeps from his later songs. The album’s real gem is the last track, a spirited but still sentimental rendition of “Little Grass Shack” recorded live in June, 2004, when he was just 96. (AP)

MIHANA
HO’OKENA
SMOOTH ISLAND JAZZ CHRISTMAS “This is mall music,” was how one friend described this collection of synthesized, computerized holiday stand-bys. “No, this is take-an-Uzi-to-the-mall music,” said another. Think Kenny G playing “Silent Night,” “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Little Drummer Boy” for a bunch of sunburned tourists on Wailea Beach, but with less soul. Merry Christmas! (AP)
FRIENDS OF ALOHA
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS LULLABY COLLECTION Rock this one in the nursery: its songs soothe the most savage of beasts—or children, as the case may be. This international collection compiles lullabies from Ireland to Samoa, with 20 tracks in all. Waves, birds and crickets contribute to the album’s overall calming effect. The slack-key touches on “Brahms Lullaby” only improve this well-known German ditty. These songs may grow on you while you listen; my new favorite is “Dungdunguen Kanto,” the Ilocano baby song from the Philippines. They say the secret to the lullaby is tempo mapping: the gradual slowing of the beats during the song. If this CD doesn’t put your babe to sleep, the CD jacket has a bonus list of the top 20 ways to calm that crying baby. Nighty night! (JR)
JACK DE MELLO
HAWAII: LAND OF ENCHANTMENT This is novelty Hawaiian music of vintage soundtracks, and a re-release of a Jack De Mello Orchestra classic from 1961. No ‘ukes or steel guitars here. Think South Pacific with sweeping orchestral scores and dramatic instrumentation using volcanic classical strings, wordless vocals and traditional chants to translate standards like “Puamana” and “Aloha Oe.” (SC)
SEAN NA’AUAO
KA ‘EHA KE ALOHA Sean Na’auao’s vocals and style have matured since I heard them last. Sean has beautiful range as he sings a mix of contemporary Hawaiian songs written by himself and others on this release. Sean steps away from his earlier island rhythm reggae style and focuses on his Hawaiian composition. The opening song “Ka Ipo lei Manu,” composed by Queen Kapi’olani herself, is a beautiful though somewhat melancholy tribute to her memories of her chief. The CD picks up speed with the next track “Holo Holo Ka’a” and continues this switch throughout. Sean really stands out with the songs that he composes himself, like “Ni’ihau o Kahelelani,” written with his wife Kau’i. He’s also not afraid to try a ballad like Dionne Warwick’s “I’ll Never Love this Way Again” and pulls it off well, but the favorite track here is “No Hawaiians No Aloha,” again by Sean and Kau’i. The refrain chants, “No Hawaiians No Aloha/We must preserve this island spirit/No Hawaiians No Aloha/E malama I ke kanaka.” Sean has proven his talents again in this change of pace CD. (JR)

ONE LITTLE DREAM In Mihana’s second solo CD release, she incorporates many styles from traditional Hawaiian chant to a more contemporary bluegrass sound. Harmonica, dobro and mandolin—several instruments not usually heard in traditional Hawaiiana—are utilized in Mihana’s music. The song titles, all single words, vary from things like “Thief” to “Dream” to “Change” and are just as different in their message as they are in their rhythm. There is much here to enjoy, so take your time. (GP)
SONNY LIM
SLACK KEY GUITAR: THE ARTISTRY OF SONNY LIM Last year marked the introduction of the Hawaiian Music category to the Grammys. The resultant winning album, a various artists compilation entitled Slack Key Guitar Volume 2, features ki ho’alu artist Sonny Lim—a member of one of Hawai’i’s most famous musical families. In Lim’s first solo project, Slack Key Guitar: The Artistry of Sonny Lim, we follow along the same loosened strings with Lim’s unaccompanied slack key. The result is smooth and easy, introspective and peaceful— evocative of the natural beauty of Kamuela’s sleepy town nestled among the Big Island’s rolling hills where Lim was born and raised. (SC)

ISLAND MUSIC VOLUME TWO This compilation is an eclectic assortment of ear pleasing music for anyone who enjoys contemporary island music, or Jahwaiian, as it’s sometimes called. There are some hip-hoppy, danceable beats along with that funky reggae that makes you pick up your feet. Add fresh singers and lyrics that swoon (Hayley, Lei, Drew) as well as rap flows (Bishop, Pharaoh Papi, B.U.B), then add signature island sounds from R.J. Kaneao and Ata Damasco and it’s one big, happy ohana. It’s definitely worth checking out as you are sure to love some, if not all, of the songs. (HK)
MADELINE ROSE
A MAGICAL MAUI CHRISTMAS At the age of nine Madeline has already recorded and released her first CD. A Magical Maui Christmas is a collection of holiday classics performed entirely by Madeline. What impressed me the most is Madeline’s promise to donate all proceeds to the children of Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Center. While she initially planned to record the music for her friends and family, she soon realized that with the help of her parents, she could use her musical talents to help those in need. There’s no question Madeline is a talented girl with a worthy cause, but she’s still just a nine-year-old girl. For those of you who can’t resist one more holiday album, consider putting your money towards a good cause and killing two birds with one stone. (AF)

New Experiences The joys of Mel’s Fast Food and Catering II I have tons of Filipino friends, but for some reason I don’t know much about their food. I guess it’s because Filipino restaurants haven’t caught on like Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese. Recently I resolved that this was unacceptable, that I had to get closer to Filipino cuisine. At Mel’s Fast Food and Catering II— catchy name, huh?—you’ll find lots of
Mel’s 1032-C Lower Main, Wailuku, 249-8533 Open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. $ options for trying Filipino cuisine, with several different sizes of containers to fill, ranging from $2.50 to $10. They will cater your parties, too, so big orders don’t scare them. They have a help-yourself hot food bar, and that’s where I got started. As I filled my containers I asked lots of questions, since I didn’t know the names of the dishes or the ingredients within them. But each time I left Mel’s with my lunch purchases I learned a bit more. Filipino cuisine is quite distinct and sophisticated, with Spanish, Chinese and American influences in their dishes. One of the more famous is chicken or pork adobo, which is a mainstay in the Filipino diet. The meat is marinated and stewed in a vinegar and soy sauce gravy, then served tender, the meat practically falling from the bone. Pork and peas is
another stew dish that’s very popular and hearty. They always seem to have a dish that incorporates a seasonal squash with meat in a tasty gravy. Lately they’ve featured pumpkin, in tender succulent pieces along with black beans and pork. It was tangy and delicious. I also tried the pumpkin with prawns, which is served in a sophisticated sauce. It was fancy but still just $2.50. One morning I was in a starchy mood, so I opted for fried doughnuts, called cascaron. They’re made from rice flour and were rich and sweet with just a hint of coconut. I also picked up some pancit, the main starch noodle dish in Filipino cooking. I like that Mel’s mixed up their pancit: it can be made with thin small egg noodles, thicker spaghetti-size egg noodles or rice noodles. Mel’s uses a medium egg noodle, and stirfries it with lots of veggies, like cabbage and carrots. You’ll also find some seasoned chicken or pork in there. The pancit has a lot of flavor without being overwhelming, and it reflects the varied spices and ingredients inherent in Filipino cooking. Look around enough and you’ll spot some more exotic items like okra, bittermelon, eggplant as well as tripe and pig’s foot. Start with the pig’s foot stew. A light brothy dish surrounds the meaty foot with chunks of potato, cabbage and carrot thrown in. It’s a very soothing dish that could probably make a cold go away. I also enjoyed the mung bean and bittermelon leaf soup, which is a salty and filling hot dish that goes well with a side of steamed rice. MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Victoria’s Fleas Sunday, 2 p.m., Casanova; Sun & Tue, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Ono’s (Westin Ka’anapali); Monday, 6 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel [POP] Victoria Vox is a Wisconsin chick with a ‘ukulele. But she’s also played the violin, oboe, trumpet and the highly underrated Casio keyboard—all before she was 14. She even attended Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, which inspired her great work in Victoria Vox and the Ultra Pink Bicycle Incident (2000), as well as a scholarship and Vince Gill Songwriting Award. Three years later, Vox went on a “Chics with Pics” tour and formed an acoustic trio called Tres Femmes—the collaboration of which inspired her current work with the ‘ole jumping (lele) flea (‘uke).
Rockin’ Fishes Friday, 10 p.m. at Casanova [ROCK] A socially conscious band that fuses rock, funk, reggae and hip-hop? Fish Out of Water, Upcountry Maui loves you already. A good-looking group of fresh-faced kids, FOOW is a California band that’s been playing for over five years, and has already toured with G. Mozart Memories Sunday, 5 p.m. at McCoy Studio, MACC
Westside Snowdrifts Saturday, 5 p.m. at the Banyan Tree in Lahaina [FESTIVAL] Christmas on a Hawaiian beach is always an interesting thing. The temperature never drops below 70 degrees, it’s nearly always sunny and the only time it snows is when a bunch of townspeople get together and get some snow made and then dumped somewhere that kids can play in it, like, oh, the Banyan Tree in Lahaina. Anyway, this weekend is one of those times. To celebrate the time of Santa Claus and sleigh bells, the LahainaTown Action Committee got Valley Isle Seafood to make five tons of snow—trust me, you don’t want to know how—and ship it over to the Banyan Tree. Then they’re going to light up the tree, build a six-foot snowman and do some other holiday stuff for the kids. To get in, you’ve got to bring a canned food item. For more information, call 667-9194 or go to www.visitlahaina.com. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
DAY
[CLASSICAL] The Alexander String Quartet will be performing a special concert on Maui in honor and remembrance of the late, great Mozart. The quartet originally formed in New York City in 1981 and since then has been around the world and back. Since forming, the group has won many awards and played alongside many prestigious musicians. Touring all over the U.S. and internationally, the four-member group has received much praise and notoriety for technical skill as well as innovation. The group consists of three violins and a cello and have accomplished the feat of bringing a new sound to old, but not tired, tunes. I wonder if they know anything by Jimmy Cliff? Tickets: $30. Call 242-7469. [GABRIELLE POCCIA]

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang Talking with Robert Downey Jr. As its title implies, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is a splashy neo-noir buddy thriller with plenty of laughs and plot twists. Screenwriter Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) returns to movies after a long hiatus to make a dazzling directorial debut that’s injected with full-bloom performances by Val Kilmer, newcomer Michelle Monaghan, and Robert Downey Jr. as Harry Lockhart, a petty thief/wannabe actor on the run in L.A. Harry teams up with gay private detective Gay Perry (Kilmer) to pose as a private eye-in-training. But bodies start piling up and the girl of his dreams proves much more than he bargained for. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is a royal cinematic treat. I recently sat down with Robert Downey Jr. to talk about the movie and his career. Maui Time Weekly: What is the satisfaction of making movies like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang? Robert Downey, Jr.: You don’t have to go in with blinders on. I remember when I saw Lethal Weapon and thinking it was really entertaining and filled with action, but rooted in a story that worked well with its characters. It was so much about the interplay between the two main characters. The best thing about Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is that the movie’s sick damn good. The movie has a very loose feel to it. Were there any moments you guys improvised on? Shane wrote such a good script that there wasn’t much improvement on it. But there were some things that were occurring right in the moment. When we were in the parking lot outside of the clinic and the guy is going to bring us back in and torture us, and he hits me with the gun, I said, “Why’d you do that?” So when I took the gun from him, I thought, “I’ve gotta hit him back with it.” So that’s why that happened. That was an improvised piece of business. How was it working with Val Kilmer for the first time? I didn’t really know Val before and I think he was back from Alexander and every fortnight there was a party at Val’s place, and I just thought he was even more eccentric in person than he was reputed to be. As soon as we were on set the first day, we did the scene where he tells me that I’m not going to get the part and then I take a swing at him, and then he says I’m not a nice guy, and then I go for him. It was already everything that was on the page

and something else—two complete weirdos making a movie together that, I think, is as entertaining as we were expecting it to be. It kind of worked out. How did you feel about Michelle Monaghan in her part before shooting began? When we read Michelle it was obvious by the time she left the office that there was no one else that was going to get this part but her, and there were some great actresses up for it. How did Shane establish and maintain the strong tempo of the movie when you were shooting? Shane is really methodical and painstaking in his writing. He’s a very exacting and mechanically efficient writer. We shot the movie in 35 nights. We were doing really important scenes back to back, one right after another. I was almost afraid to look at the call sheet. There was no time to be ponderous about it. My preparation was doing what I had to do to stay out of my own way so I could do the work, which means having a loose sense of what I have to say and where I have to be. MTW

I’ve been meaning to go on vacation lately but I never seem to have the time. Finally, the other night I got off my arse and to my surprise, ended up on a cruise ship of sorts. “Welcome aboard the S. S. Golden Delicious!” Smiling deck hands in sailor hats greeted me as I sat down at the Iao Theater to enjoy an evening variety show on the “ship.” I was soon surrounded by overly friendly nuns that seemed to come from

Any thoughts of just sitting and enjoying the show quickly dissipated when I realized no one in the audience was safe. The spotlight had no boundaries. I don’t usually consider nuns the life of the party, but this is different. On stage, the ship had met some misfortunes. After seven days of tumultuous seas, the nuns had been pulled in to perform the variety show since virtually all the paid actors were, well, let’s just say, a little green. It didn’t take me long to warm up to the girls—uh, I mean sisters. They actually

had some rhythm and the angels did bless them with song. As cliché as it is, I must admit they did carry the air of penguins at times, in garb and in action. Reverend Mother (Julie Frank) was the stern mother who, when the other nuns weren’t looking, was actually the party master. She also started getting all buddy-buddy with Howard (James Langford), the only actor who fared the storm without the brown paper bag. The stage couldn’t hide much. Sister Robert Anne (Lina Krueger-Miller) and Sister Mary Hubert (Laura Bloom Farber) were starting to feel a little ousted by the “Tev and Rev” show. Sister Hubert’s quick thinking had her plotting to become the next Revered Mother. There was also an amusing magic show performed by Sister Amnesia (Kirsten Fredericksen) but my favorite was her forbidden puppet shows. She got a little carried away and ended up tossing Sister Amnesia overboard. It took awhile to get her back on the boat but Sister Robert Anne (Lina KruegerMiller) entertained us with an amazing song. Her performance was incredible. Although the items from the duty free cart were entertaining, if I could bottle up a nun and take one home I would take Sister Amnesia. Her humor mixed with her innocence was something I could’ve watched all night. It made me think that a little memory loss might actually be good for us once in awhile. MTW

MASON MCGRAW
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21) The green fields in the view, the rolling hills of grasses and vast lands of forever green and then blue… blue like you couldn’t imagine. Don’t you love it when things come together in a positive direction for the goal in which to be obtained? Notice your feelings and inspirations to be extra strong right now, so as not to be too much and then again, not enough. There is a rhythm in the path of the middle way. CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 20) Due to certain mechanical... no, electrical... no, um, electro-magnetic fields pulsating from the stars over millions of years away, the uncertainty of which is planned will now come full circle. The illumination from which is described as a long experience this week, will only show you in the end that love prevails! No matter the argument or fix up—no mattah, it’s all good, mate! Like the good old days of sailing those ships off the coasts and through the mystical waterfalls in the lagoons of the jungle. Stand firm. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 19) Have you ever seen the Northern Lights? I imagine it would be really amazing. Like visions in the mind, like stars that bind us all together, what comes out of your production this week is going to depend a great deal upon your follow-through. Don’t be afraid of really going the extra mile and getting all you want accomplished. Rome wasn’t built in a day, as the old saying goes. But what was built—now that’s still around! Saturn is retrograde until April ‘06. Tell everyone! PISCES (FEBRUARY 20-MARCH 20) What do salmon feel when they jump up a river and find their nest? Man, I’m seriously telling you, using that fish energy really helps you take the time to relax and let the world flow around you like the ocean and the swirling magic that swims through the jungles and tropical islands of Hawai’i. If there is something you’ve been putting off this week, it’s time to get chopping and make it happen. If you forget something the first time, write it down.
Dedicated
Now Open
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Anyone here heard of the truth? Well, that is a relative issue. “Relative” in the sense that the year now is 2005, and for Aries, it’s hard to keep track of stuff like this sometimes. At least be able to express how much joy and love you feel waking on this planet. It’s amazing to be alive and know that others do love you. There’s a great relief in the virtue of patience and that’s a struggle for Aries. This week focus on ways to be kinder to the ones having hard times; don’t be afraid of the struggle that’s worth the climb.
Enthusiastic
Hiring! Highestand Standards
PassionHospitality for Freshness Director
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I wonder why there’s always been this rough surface between Taurus and Aries. But it’s there, and to figure out a way to consciously make it a good one is an attempt at what causes the winds to blow and the rains to pour down the mountains above Waiehu. Like tiny stars in the horizon—are they planes or are they planets?—it could be the real shadow behind the motivation and intentions of your true being. Be love.
Ideal candidate must have good communication and computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office. Responsibilities include: managing the greater team; placing sales calls to concierge desks and local business community; coordinating special events such as wedding receptions and banquets; and participation in hospitality training with the front of the house staff. $15.00/hr.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21) Falling in love with nature is a golden key to happiness—keep it close to your heart. You’re looking for new challenges or maybe still faced with the same thing until you make your decision and stick to your word. Being well known for your helpful guidance in communication, Gemini, you are a major plus when purpose is choreographed with your enthusiasm. Look for a Virgo or Aries for a good laugh and new inspiration.
Servers
Must have a minimum of five years experience with good knowledge of food and wine service.
CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 21) For some time now, you’ve been building this shell around you—call it a crab’s shell, if you will—and this shell is now your wings. Feel the flight of your sail, discover new ideas and existences far from the normal this week. Or maybe go for it for the rest of your life. There’s someone who needs to know about certain commitment issues—don’t be afraid to be honest! Speak from the heart and keep it real.
Host Persons Must have good hospitality and communication skills, starting at $10.00/hr.
LEO (JULY 22-AUGUST 21) The fire next to the ocean burns bright. And the stars that shine in the lights of your eyes are quite the hot little detail, Leo. You know you got it! Keep that flame bright by replenishing nutrients along the way, even making this a top priority right now is a good thing. Ever taken any cooking classes?
Pastry Chef Minimum of three years hands on experience.
VIRGO (AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 22) Entering the mind, so many different ideas and thoughts—which way to go to end up where? Now is the time to remember what you really want in life. What do you truly desire in this world, and are you striving to reach it? Virgo, during this Saturn retrograde, going back in time will be very useful and healing for the mind’s necessary refreshment and focus.
Applications accepted at 744 Front Street in the Lahaina Store building first floor office from 9:00 am through 5:00 pm Monday through Friday or email dhanley@lahainastoregrille.com
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) The show must go on! During the next week of events, stay positive through the criticism. It seems there might be more thrown at you than what you’re ready for. Don’t let it get you into a negative stupor and react at their level. Two wrongs don’t make a right; whether it’s in the morning or towards the end of your day, stay true to the love that keeps the harmony alive on Maui. A new decision will prove successful. SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21) With the ocean around you and the splendor of spectacular sunshine awakening into the new day, get up extra early this week to go for a walk in the jungle. Let go of anything bothering you; it’s time to move on. Your cool water nature helps prevent jumping to conclusions. The retrograde of Saturn will bless you with a tranquil reality—very relaxed and mentally uplifting. MTW MASON123LOVE@YAHOO.COM

HOLOHOLOGIRL
31 Things About Me
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM
Where are the eagles and trumpets? – T.S. Eliot
1. I have never been stung by a bee. 2. I was almost named Angela, after my father Angel, whom I haven’t seen since I was three. 3. Mean Joe Green sang “Happy Birthday” to me with a ‘ukulele on my eighth. 4. If I ever have children, I will name my first daughter after my grandmother, Lucille, my biggest creative muse.
5. Although I don’t believe in following astrological predictions, I absolutely believe I am 100 percent Pisces.
6. The first movie I ever saw was Alien. My babysitter took me. 7. I have a videotape collection of Schoolhouse Rock and can sing the Preamble to the Constitution on command.
8. I was once obsessed with James Dean. 9. At 15, I lost my virginity to a boy who ignored me at school the next day, so I marched over to his house with a group of my closest girlfriends, pounded on his door and demanded it (my virginity) back.
10.
The only bone I’ve ever broken was my middle finger seven years ago after jumping from the rope at Swinging Bridges in Iao.
11. I once stayed on the phone with an obscene caller for two hours. 12. When I was younger, I desperately wanted braces (though I didn’t need them) and freckles. 13. I have seen every Mickey Rourke movie, my favorite being Angel Heart. 14. The very first tampon I had to use, I neglected to remove the plastic applicator and walked around with it in for hours.
15. I sometimes hang out at Foodland just to listen to the music: Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibbs’ “Guilty,” Lionel Ritchie’s “Easy Like Sunday Morning,” Ambrosia’s “Biggest Part of Me”—I mean it’s just hit after glorious hit.
We DO IT Because IT FEELS GOOD!
Monkey Spankers
16. Using bad grammar or the word “funner” is a deal-breaker for me. 17. Over half the books on my shelf are either marine biology related or erotic fiction. 18. I was once “discovered” by a New York director to play a tough street chick in his film but then promptly turned down after he said I was “too nice.”
19.
I come from a long line of women who’ve eloped to Las Vegas in lieu of having a big wedding ceremony.
20.
I once wrote a short story about a man who had to masturbate in an elevator and couldn’t orgasm until he reached the eleventh floor without interruptions.
21. If I could go into a time machine, I would go back to Paris in the 1920’s and hang out with Henry Miller and Anais Nin, or early 1800’s England and flirt with Lord Byron and his friends.
22. I once had sex in a movie theater, during Grumpy Old Men Part 2. 23. I love watching American Kennel dog shows on TV. 24. Over the past 20 years, I’ve been told I look like Merle Oberon, Olivia de Havilland, Madonna, Janeane Garofalo, Betty Boop, Katy Jurado, a Mexican Marilyn Monroe and that chick with glasses in Ghost World. Don’t get excited, none of it’s true and most of it’s been said in bars by drunk people.
25. At home, I prefer to read topless. 26. I’ve only had four serious relationships, though time spent in them totals 13 years.
27. I blush easily and I swear too much. 28. I am Dutch, German, French, English and Mexican. 29. Nobody in my family is very religious, but my great-great grandmother was one of the many wives of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church.
30. I keep a big knife under my bed. 31. Although I was tempted the other night at Ray’s Bar in Wailuku to sing a duet of “Islands in the Stream,” I have never done karaoke. Samantha Campos is currently on a spiritual path that does not involve going to India or eating dirt. MTW
