LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR
COMPILED BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM
‘Lay off the Weed a bit’ The Year in Letters to the Editor To be honest, I’ve always been disappointed with our letters to the editor. Not nearly enough of them come in, and too often those that do are courteous, informed and, yes, complimentary. But every so often, we get some real vicious responses, where the acid and fury at our screw-ups—both real and imagined—just drips off the page. Here are some excerpts from the best of those letters, reprinted here because it’s always fun to see people rip us apart: I was very disappointed to see the feature in two issues of This Week’s Picks entitled “Tired of the Same Ole?” (Dec. 14 issue) and the follow up the next week entitled, “This Week in… Staying In!” (Dec. 21 issue) in which Heidi King, the Calendar Editor, basically said there is not much worth going out for in Maui!… Her tone was sarcastic and demeaning, and the articles should have been grounds for firing instead of being published… Please think about your practices. I will revoke my advertising until changes are made… I am appalled at your misspelling of a word on the cover of your Dec. 21 issue. The cover! How could such an immense typo, perhaps evidence of your disdain for the English language, have passed approval through not only you but your entire team of editorial minions?… I guess political context outside of Maui isn’t relevant to you guys there… I am disappointed in this week’s article (Holoholo Girl, Jan. 18, 2007). I know the girls on the [Maui Fever] show and I think they are getting enough shit about it that you don’t need to print a hurtful piece because you may have had nothing else to write about… I would now like to clarify my position on sexuality and religion—which when read out of context in the article due to space limitations—perhaps may have been understandably offensive to some Maui Time readers… I genuinely regret if any readers were inadvertently affronted by any of my printed statements taken out of context and sincerely assure everyone that no offense was intended… Just finished reading your article entitled “Spoiled by Spago” (Apr. 5, 2007). They had to know you were coming and who you were. We have been to Spago four times in the past years and never have had a good experience at said
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
establishment… When I saw the cover of the April 12, 2007 weekly, I was looking forward to an article that would complement the wonderful photo of the Dalai Lama you presented. Instead, I found the writings of Liliana Begley to be in direct contrast to the compassionate and loving nature of the Dalai Lama, whose writings and presence in our modern day world have influenced so many (“An Unenlightened Person’s Guide to the Dalai Lama”)… [It] was shocking, disrespectful and seemed to reflect a writer trying to be hip [by] using words such as “yeah” and [the] language of kids strolling the mall… I sincerely hope that the author makes her way through the throngs of people gathering to witness and experience the power and magnificence the Dalai Lama brings to Maui… I love your magazine but your “Best of Maui” is a joke… Also, the offhand comment about “whale families” is interesting if not entirely accurate unless you count single parent households as a family and these days there is increasing resistance to that. Male humpbacks come to Maui for the same reason that single male humans often come to Maui, to get laid without retaining any responsibility for any resulting offspring… So what’s the deal with you guys bashing the Hotel Hana-Maui one week and then gushing over their restaurant the next (“For the Love of Pumpkin,” May 17, 2007)? Forgive me, but that looked a little odd… Somehow, it seems, Anthony Pignataro has missed the obvious in his piece, “Water for HC&S” (The Maui 10, June 21, 2007)… I read your news every now and then to see what is going on in the little island of Maui. To be perfectly honest, I think your points, however, are a bit biased… It’s too bad you can’t hire someone that knows what their [sic] doing inputting information. What happened to proofreading???… I will try not to be rude, for that is not my purpose here, but I must admit that it is somewhat nauseatingly unprofessional, when the very job you and others in your organization get paid to do is simply not getting done… [I]n my opinion, it is time for you guys to lay off the weed a bit while at work, and even if you don’t, at least double-check your facts and spelling before going to print… I find it extremely ironic that in a piece where author Anthony Pignataro questions Maui News author Harry Eagar’s journalistic integrity (“The Advocate,” Aug. 9, 2007), he makes several glaring omissions and does quite a bit of selective reporting himself… I have to say, I was very disappointed with the
Restless Native column (“Nothing but a Hoochie, Mama,” Aug. 9, 2007). I thought “Eh Brah” was reserved for trash talking. I really hope that this was just an issue that irritated her and she needed to get it off of her chest, because I really don’t care to read her column every week if she’s just going to be talking crap about people (and she wasn’t even funny about it)… I was extremely insulted by your Aug. 23, 2007 issue’s Eh Brah… Who the heck hired this new girl for the Holoholo Girl’s column? I want to hear about parties and interesting people and sexual trysts and adventures. I don’t want to hear a freakin’ play-by-play about kids and husband! Who the hell cares? Give me drama so that I don’t feel like my life is so boring… With that in mind, it seems that it is your myopic perspective which needs to be examined rather than cultural dances of Tahiti and the Cook Islands… Just writing a shout out to Restless Native. Although, I did at times find Holoholo Girl mildly amusing, mostly it was a pathetic waste of a public platform. Thank you for using your precious freedom of press to write about something other than booze, boys and bars… If you are going to write a lead story in the first person you really should insure there is a byline… Anthony: Please accept my apologies. I am the Naïve One. I mistook you for a journalist when you’re really a Whore. How embarrassing!… Is Maui Time really going to replace [Holoholo Girl] with the depressing mid-life complaints of a self-described workaholic?… By the way, the formula of adding nonsensical trivia in italics at the end does not make the articles, or the author, any funnier to read… Yes, I too can criticize the sometimes obvious errors made in your publication but I notice that for the most part, you have the balls to print the letters coming in that criticize you. MTW
Maui Time welcomes letters commenting on our coverage, but only if they’re complimentary. If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar—that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. Top 10 Quotes from Governor Linda Lingle in 2007 10. “Barry [Fukunaga] has a tremendous understanding of state and city government and has proven to be an outstanding manager and leader.” (On Barry Fukunaga becoming her chief of staff, Dec. 3) 9. “Judge Cardoza recognized that the Legislature and our Administration worked cooperatively, within the boundaries of our state constitution, to pass a law that preserves an important interisland transportation alternative for the people of Hawai‘i.” (On Judge Joseph Cardoza lifting his injunction on Hawai‘i Superferry, Nov. 14) 8. “I first appointed Judge [Randal] Lee to the Circuit Court in 2005 because I felt his extensive experience as a deputy prosecuting attorney, as well as his background with the Public Defender’s Office gave him a broad perspective that is critical to serving on the bench. Over the past two years, Judge Lee has served the people of Hawai‘i well and I am proud to appoint him to the Intermediate Court of Appeals.” (On her nominating Randal Lee to Court of Appeals, Oct. 15) 7. “It’s very troubling that Senate President [Colleen] Hanabusa is mis-
leading the public and distorting my commitment to honor the will of Hawai‘i voters. The Senate President and her colleagues are fully aware that I submitted a bill that would establish the very type of advisory selection council the people of Hawai‘i voted for in November—one that does not cater to special interests, one that ensures the selection process remains open and transparent, one that does not run counter to national best practices in university governance, and one that is supported by [University of Hawai‘i] President David McClain.” (On Hanabusa’s criticism of Lingle for vetoing a bill creating an advisory council on UH regents, even though the voters had passed a constitutional amendment requiring exactly that, April 19) 6. “[We] mutually concluded it was in the best interest of all that he resign his position effective immediately.” (On accepting Chief of Staff Bob Awana’s resignation, June 28) 5. “I want to lead us down the path of innovation because it is the path of hope and opportunity.” (On her new “Innovation” proposals, first introduced during her State of the State Address, Jan. 22) 4. “It is clear that the majority party in the Senate doesn’t want people with a prosecutor’s background to be on the court. It is

a real sad day when someone of such character... can’t get confirmed.” (On the state Senate voting to reject her appointment of Randal Lee to the Court of Appeals, Oct. 30) 3. “We respect everyone’s right to voice their opinion, but we will not allow a small group of protestors to act out in a lawless manner to obstruct the operations of a legitimate business, intimidate the people who wish to use its services or put people’s lives at risk.” (On Hawai‘i Superferry announcing that it would return to Kauai, though it never actually did, Sept. 12) 2. “Bob [Awana] resigned because of the media attention and the sensationalization of him being a victim of blackmail and his personal life and personal issues. It was determined that the media wouldn’t let up and it would take away from our focus. He made the decision and I agreed to it.” (Further ruminations on Awana’s resignation, Dec. 3)
2007, as voted on by me, the editor, is… 1. “This special session is not just about one company or one vessel, it is about the long-term economic well-being of our state; and about giving our residents, farmers and civil defense agencies options when traveling between the islands. Allowing this transportation alternative to resume will also restore the reputation of our state as a fair place to do business.” (Lingle explaining why the state Legislature had to exempt Hawai‘i Superferry from state environmental laws, Oct. 23) MTW

A&B LIKES BUSES After a mere week out of the top slot, A&B rockets back to the top on news that it donated a bunch of land to Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) so they can build a big bus terminal in Pu`unene. On the mainland, an organization like MEO might just go to a county or city council for land. But out here, things are a bit different. Of the 10 acres MEO needs for the site—which will hopefully house a passenger terminal, bus storage lot, workshop, fueling station and offices—A&B sold five acres to MEO at a “deep discount,” according to the Dec. 17 Maui News and gave them the other five acres free of charge. “[W]e recognized the importance of this location to MEO, and the importance of MEO to this community,” A&B Chairman and CEO Allen Doane said in The Maui News piece.

TIGER SKIPS OUT, AGAIN For the third year in a row, Tiger Woods—as close to a legend in professional golf as you can get and still be living—has decided to pass on the Mercedes-Benz Championship, held each January in ML&P’s famously luxurious Kapalua Resort. Still, Woods tried to strike a conciliatory tone. “Kapalua does a fantastic job,” Woods said in a Dec. 17 Pacific Business News web post. “I just enjoy the time at home with my family.” How sweet. Guess which tourney the Buick-sponsored golfer will be attending first in 2008? Yup: the Buick Invitational in San Diego. Perhaps Kapalua’s problem is simply a matter of automobile selection… MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com When you and your aged boyfriend moved into the ohana next door to my dream rental home, I thought you would bring the same mellow vibe every one of the four previous tenants had in the six-plus years I’ve lived there. Was I wrong! First, you installed your illegal ceramics business in your carport on the driveway that we’re supposed to share. (The striped pots you sell are so ugly that the only way anyone would want to buy them is if they contained illegal contraband.) But then my houseguests started reporting suspicious sounds and smells, which seemed to occur every time the old guy got back from a trip to Florida. Finally, you began verbally threatening my visitors who dared walk up past your house to mine. One of them was so traumatized, he complained to our landlord, who promptly evicted me! So, thank you, bitch, because after all the trauma you caused me I managed to find a bigger house that’s much closer to the ocean and my office. But the best part about it is that you’re nowhere near me anymore.

ROBREPORT
BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET
Three for the Future Trio of college seniors have keen environmental interest Three former Seabury Hall classmates and friends recently returned home for the holidays, taking a welcome break from their senior year of college. Each spent last summer on Maui working on key environmental issues. Rachel Hodara of Stanford University served an internship with Kuhea Paracuelles, the Maui County Environmental Coordinator. Tia Ferguson, a senior at Duke University, worked in the offices of Dowling Company. And Lana Coryell completed her Pomona College thesis by producing a 40-minute documentary on renewable energy. Her film, EmPOWERing a Community: Maui’s Quest for Sustainable Energy, will premiere at the Seabury Hall Performing Arts Studio on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. I spoke with the three young women and asked them to reflect on their experiences from last summer, and to look to Maui’s future: MAUI TIME WEEKLY: How did your environmental internship with the County of Maui come about? RACHEL HODARA: I applied for the University of Hawai‘i Hilo Hawaiian Internships Program last summer and got it, and the director, Sharon Ziegler-Chong thought that the internship at the county would be a good match for me. I am interested in environmental policy, so that’s where I ended up.
pace of development. But honestly, I’m not sure if anyone has a real, working solution. MTW: Tia, How did you internship with the Dowling Company come about?
Rachel Hodara, Tia Ferguson and Lana Coryell
MTW: What were the highlights, and what was difficult about it?
MTW: What do you feel are the main environmental issues Maui is facing?
RH: The highlights were being able to shadow Kuhea and meet all of the people that she worked with. It was amazing to work with all of Maui’s leaders in the conservation field. Another highlight was attending the Hawai‘i Conservation Conference on Oahu. The most challenging part was being sensitive to everyone’s point of view without losing sight of my own. That is an important and challenging part of working in government and politics.
RH: Our water supply. Maui is growing really fast and I think we are growing faster than is sustainable for this island. I was able to work with the Watershed Partnerships this summer, and saw firsthand the work they are doing to conserve the watershed forests—it’s amazing, but the demands are so high. I really look forward to the day when water is used more conservatively and streams don’t run dry.

TIA FERGUSON: I emailed Dowling Company, introducing myself and explaining my interest in working as an intern. I got a call back from his secretary within minutes, requesting my resume and asking me to come in for an interview. In the interview, Everett Dowling explained to me that, as an intern, my work would primarily involve raising awareness and public support for green building on our island. I would do a study using last year’s plumbing permits to quantify exactly how much water could have been saved in 2006 if water conserving devices had been installed. I would publish this work in a letter to the editor, and would educate the public about water conserving appliances and their potential to solve water shortage issues on Maui. Finally, I would research the ways in which other states have adopted water conservation as a part of their building code mandates, and propose an ordinance to the Maui County Council to do the same. MTW: What were your other projects and responsibilities? TF: I did some writing and designing for the June edition newsletter of the U.S. Green Building Council/Hawai‘i Chapter’s bi-annual publication. I also helped with coordinating the annual Focus Green lecture series and in creating several of the locally broadcasted “Focus Green” radio ads for Dowling Company. see THREE, page 10
NEWSOFTHEWEIRD SMALL TOWN POLITICS Mayor Ken Williams resigned in Centerton, Ark. (pop. 2,146), in November and revealed that he is actually Don LaRose, an Indiana preacher who abruptly abandoned his family in 1980 because, he said, Satanists had abducted and threatened him, and brainwashed him to rub out details of a murder he supposedly knew about. He said his memory returned only recently, thanks to truth serum. And Mayor Lino Donato of Poteet, Texas (pop. 3,500), said in November that he would remain in office despite his inability to set foot in city hall. That building is less than 1,000 feet from a youth recreation center and therefore off-limits to Donato, who was adjudicated a sex offender in October.
SPECTACULAR ERRORS In November, a 77-year-old man in Jacksonville, Fla., intending to help his daughter by riding his bicycle to Long Branch Elementary School to pick up her four-year-old son, arrived back home with a kid on the bike but did not realize that he had picked up the wrong boy. Said the picked-up kid’s frantic mother, “[The two boys] don’t even look alike.” And the Rhode Island Department of Health fined Rhode Island Hospital $50,000 in November because three doctors so far this year have performed neurosurgery on the wrong side of the patients’ brains. Two patients survived.
FINE POINTS OF THE LAW In November the Food and Drug Administration told Smiling Hill Farm of Westbrook, Maine, that it
BY CHUCK SHEPHERD CHUCK@MAUITIME.COM
would have to recall all of its eggnog because it did not list “egg” as an ingredient on the label. Federal law requires the listing to protect people with egg allergies from inadvertently consuming foods that they might not have realized contain egg (even products called “eggnog”).
YIKES! The China Daily newspaper reported in November that local markets and beauty salons in Guangdong province were selling low-priced hair bands made from used condoms.
PEOPLE WHO HAVE A WAY WITH WORDS Washington state Rep. Jim Dunn, responding in October to a reprimand by colleagues about unwanted sexual remarks made to a female staff member, said he couldn’t recall exactly what he told her, but that he was “sure it was very inappropriate, because I do that kind of thing.” And Russia’s checkerboard serial killer— who said he aimed to commit 64 murders even though only charged with 49— explained in court in October how he got started, at age 18, by killing a classmate: “A first killing is like your first love. You never forget it.”

ROBREPORT
LC Watch Award Time! How do you properly honor a year’s worth of accomplishments by the County of Maui Department of Liquor Control? With useless, meaningless awards, that’s how! So here’s to 2007, and hopes that 2008 will be just as exciting: LICENSEE OF THE YEAR Bob Longhi The year was just four days old when Longhi came in to accept his prize—a $2,000 fine for over-service ($1,000 suspended)—from the LC Adjudication Board in person. “Hope you don’t hold this against me because I really enjoy your food,” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Hanano told Longhi during a break in the festivities. JUDGE OF THE YEAR Joseph Cardoza Not even counting the tortured Superferry hearings, Judge Cardoza had a really busy year in 2007. First, in February, he threw out Casanova’s appeal of two Adjudication Board rulings of over-service. Then in November, he tossed the Maui Dance Advocates appeal of the Liquor Commission’s refusal to amend its ancient, Footloose-like rules governing dancing. TRAGEDY OF THE YEAR Paradice Bluz How the popular Lahaina nightclub could go from clean record to three over-service convictions and a revoked license in the span of just six months will be remarkable for a long time. Then again, the real tragedy comes from the fact that two of the three over-service cases involved people who died in drunk driving accidents. LIQUOR COMMISSIONER OF THE YEAR Arsene “Blackie” Gadarian Really, Blackie is a good guy. Always good for a quote—he was so proud of his Dec. 12 quip “Starting a business on Maui is like winning the war in Iraq” he called me the next day to remind me of it—Gadarian was a little too quote-worthy during the agonizing April hearing on dancing: “If you feel you’re being persecuted,” Gadarian told one dance enthusiast during the hearing, “find another island.” ENDLESS DISCUSSION OF THE YEAR Kihei Kalama Villages Some day, I keep telling myself, the Liquor Commission is going to decide to do something about the thick collection of bars in South Maui known as Kihei Kalama Villages. The cops—who get a lot of service calls from the area—have been after the LC for months to force all the bars there to shut down at midnight. But the LC has so far refused to do that—or anything else, for that matter.

THREE: continued from page 8 I was assigned to attend the Council Land Use Committee meetings on Wailea 670. I sometimes saw some friends who were staunch anti-development, and found that we could engage in positive dialogue. I read Maui Electric’s 400-page Integrated Resources Planning document. Currently the utility only accepts a tiny portion of their peak grid load in renewable energy. It would be helpful for our self-sufficiency if this would be increased to allow much more energy from alternate sources and de-centralize the grid. MTW: What helped shape your choices to work on environmental issues? TF: Growing up in paradise! What else? Maui is a microcosm of the world. We have a unique opportunity to set a new precedent for what it means to be environmentally conscious and sustainable. MTW: Lana, what’s your college major, and the highlights of your studies at Pomona? LANA CORYELL: My college major is Environmental Analysis with an emphasis on “Society, Development and the Environment.” I’ve taken some amazing classes at Pomona. My favorites so far have been “Green Urbanism” and “The Global Politics of Food and Agriculture.” MTW: What was the inspiration for your senior thesis video project on renewable energy options? LC: While at home last summer, I read the local newspapers every day and was shocked to read about Maui’s energy issues. As I read and researched, a somewhat grim picture of Maui’s energy situation began to emerge. I discovered that despite abundant natural resources like solar, wind and wave energy, Maui is part of the most petroleum dependent state in the nation with about 90 percent of its primary energy coming from petroleum. This unfortunate fact affects Maui’s environment and economy, and the pocketbooks, safety and comfort of Maui residents. I also wanted to discover the exact changes Maui should make to achieve a more sustainable energy system. I began thinking about the best way for me—a single individual—to create the change I felt was necessary. Since our society is so receptive to visual media and DVDs are easily distributed, I knew that a film could impact and
inspire a large proportion of the Maui population. With a greater number of community members advocating for sustainable energy, perhaps larger systemic changes can occur. MTW: Based on what you learned while interviewing energy experts this past summer, what do you think are Maui’s best choices for renewable energy to lead towards self-sufficiency? LC: Tough question! I think we should certainly take advantage of Maui’s abundant solar energy. Whether it means creating a solar “farm,” putting panels on our buildings, or simply installing solar water heaters, Maui can do much more to utilize this valuable resource. With so much sun available all the time and tax rebates to help make systems more affordable, there is no reason why we shouldn’t put solar panels on the roofs of our hotels, schools, and offices! I also think we should look at testing wave power because we have the ideal environment to prove that it works. I also really like the idea of using more wind power, assuming that we can find a way to store the energy so that it does not create too much grid instability. MTW: What are the challenges to switching to local, sustainable energy choices? LC: First, renewable technologies appear to be expensive. These technologies require a large initial investment in the beginning, though they provide bigger pay offs in the long run, especially with oil prices on the rise. Second, I think we are resistant to changing our habits. It’s scary to make a drastic change away from a system that has worked well for so long. Third, I think the utility company represents a bit of a barrier to the overall movement towards sustainability. Their monopoly over our electricity supply makes it difficult for other renewable energy producers to enter the market and for consumers to have a choice. MTW: What are possible solutions? LC: All the experts I interviewed described the influence that the Maui community can have over the island’s energy situation. United community pressure has the power to shape Maui’s energy system by affecting the decisions of our policy makers, utility companies, businesses, tourists and homeowners. In other words, an empowered community is the foundation our solutions. I sincerely hope that my film will help educate and enlighten the Maui community and will help create the empowered Maui that I believe is possible. MTW

Cultural Resources Commission okays Halloween in Lahaina Town. The Maui News runs a front-page story on word that Whole Foods—yes, the grocery store—will be opening a store on the island next year. Hawai‘i Superferry announces that it’s starting service on Aug. 28. Well, that’s that–sure, the Hawai‘i Supreme Court is scheduled to examine the issue of whether the Superferry needs an EIS, but few expect anything other than yet another rubber-stamp. Looks like the Superferry is a done deal, a sure thing, a guaranteed— oops, spoke too soon: the Supreme Court rules unanimously that yes, Hawai‘i Superferry needs to do an EIS. The company takes the ruling seriously—so seriously that they start service early and charge passengers just $5. The company manages to do one run to Maui before Judge Joseph Cardoza slaps a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the company. Kauai residents engineer their own TRO, in the form of a human chain of surfers stretched across Nawiliwili Harbor, turning back the Superferry as she tried to dock on only her second voyage to the island. But then the group 1,000 Friends of Kauai fails to get a judge to slap a TRO on the Superferry. But their threat to fill Nawiliwili Harbor with protesters should the Superferry return seems enough to get the company to continue to “indefinitely” suspend its visits to Kauai, even though it’s completely legal for the ferry to visit the island. Representatives has just passed a Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill that includes mysterious and fantastic provisions designed to “protect the rights of passengers.” Millions around the country rub their eyes in disbelief.
OCTOBER Upcountry residents chafe—literally, as well as figuratively—under mandatory water restrictions. County officials, like Water Director Jeff Eng, begin making noises about imposing cutbacks on Central and South Maui if residents there don’t start voluntarily reducing their water usage. Mayor Tavares and the county Planning Commission decides to solve the controversy over “unpermitted transient vacation rentals”—which make up the vast majority of all independent vacation rentals on the island—once and for all. Hilarity ensues. Judge Cardoza rules that the Superferry can’t return to Maui until the state finishes an EIS. Lingle then reminds us what the words “audacity” and “cynicism” mean by then asking for a “special session” of the Legislature that would pass a law singling out the Superferry for exemption of the current law requiring it to wait around for an EIS. Wow, are you still reading? Good for you! Hawaiian Airlines sues Mesa Airlines, alleging that Mesa used “unauthorized trade secrets” from Hawaiian to start its business. The LC shuts down Paradice Bluz in Lahaina after the club gets two convictions in one day for overservice. The U.S. House passes the Akaka Bill. A sickly hammerhead shark begins popping up all along the South Maui coast, prompting officials to close beaches with each sighting. Eventually the shark washes up dead on Charley Young Beach, ensnared in an illegal gill net that also killed two sea turtles. County Council member Jo Anne Johnson formally proposes a moratorium on the development of West Maui agricultural lands. To everyone’s surprise, the bill isn’t immediately tabled. The state Legislature gives Hawai‘i Superferry its special exemption from state environmental law, allowing the company to operate while conducting an EIS. Unless your legislator’s name ends in Baker, English, Tsutsui or Carroll, he or she voted for the thing. Another who didn’t is Kauai Representative Hermina Morita who said it simply “shows no respect for the rule of law.” Hawaiian Airlines wins its lawsuit against Mesa, whose Chief Financial Officer didn’t help matters by insisting that he accidentally erased crucial emails while purging his office computer of pornography. Island travelers worry that Mesa, unable to afford to pay the $80 million judgment, will disappear, ending forever the current luxury of fare wars and occasional $19 plane tickets to Oahu. Massive rainstorms soak the island, flooding streets, spilling raw sewage into the ocean near the Lahaina Wastewater Treatment Plant, plunging Kula and Kihei into darkness for days and delaying the Superferry’s return yet again. When the Superferry finally does resume service to the island, hundreds of people stand along Pu‘unene Avenue, jeering cars as they drive out of the Superferry lot. County Water Director Eng tells residents that the recent rain has helped water levels, but has by no means ended the drought. Lt. Pioneer Inn Where you, too, can play tourist for a day Vegetarian Eggs Benedict and Macadamia Nut Pancakes
I live in Lahaina Town, so I’m constantly surrounded by aloha print-wearing, sunburned tourists armed with cameras and fanny packs. It can be frustrating to make your way through crowds of strolling visitors straight off the cruise ship day in and day out, so one day my guy and I gave up and decided to join in and spend the morning playing tourist.

I threw on a bright blue dress and some oversized sunglasses, grabbed my camera and headed down to Front Street. The first stop on our tour was Lahaina Harbor, which was already bustling with families and elderly couples trying to soak up the historic

vibe. After wandering around, reading the plaques that described the birthing stone and the patterned foundation relic of one of King Kamehameha’s wives’ homes, we stopped in the Historic Pioneer Inn Grill and Bar for some breakfast. The inn was built in 1901 in the style of a plantation house. We walked through the swinging saloon doors into was once the Pioneer Tavern. An enormous nude painting hung above the long wood bar top in the small but bright room, and we opted for a seat outside on the shaded veranda overlooking the harbor. It was well before noon, but since we were on vacation for the day, I ordered a champagne mimosa. My guy opted for a spicy Bloody Mary. We perused the short menu, which included traditional egg dishes, served with a choice of ham, bacon or Portuguese sausage and rice or home fries. Omelets were available with American, jack or cheddar cheeses, breakfast meats, mushrooms, tomatoes, grilled zucchini, and onions. The Mowee Wowee Omelet came stocked with jack cheese, Portuguese sausage and pineapple. Many of the selections, though typical of breakfast, enjoyed a particular local flavor—like the Hawaiian sweet bread French toast, mahi benedict or Big Kahuna pancakes. In true Maui style, loco moco took star position on the menu under local favorites. After a discussion over how much food was too much for breakfast, we decided to share the traditional eggs benedict with home fries and the macadamia nut pancakes. I’m a firm believer that
you can tell if a restaurant is good for breakfast based only on the quality of their eggs benedict. It’s an easy dish to mess up. Ours came out very close to perfect, with crispy, toasted English muffins tucked beneath thin slices of honey ham. The poached eggs were deliciously runny, but not overly so, and the hollandaise was sweet and creamy with a hint of tart lemon. The huge side of potatoes was puffy and fried to a crispy and light, golden brown. But my eyes bulged when I saw the pancakes. Two of them completely covered a large dinner plate and came smothered in powdered sugar, then sprinkled with lots of chopped up, toasted mac nuts. Our server brought maple and coconut syrup to the table and I doused my cakes with butter and maple. They were light and fluffy, but I knew if I made it through that whole plate I wouldn’t need any lunch. When we’d stuffed ourselves to the breaking point and pushed our plates away, I looked around at the tables of tourists examining maps and guide books, writing on postcards and discussing plans for their upcoming days of vacation. I guess it’s a privilege to live in a place that visitors flock to, and I’m glad that I can always take a mini-vacation any day of the week. MTW Customized Omelet and Spicy Bloody Mary

Pour Some Sugar on Me Tuesday (Jan. 1) Kick off 3:30 p.m. at the Kahului Ale House, Kahului [SPORTS] It’s more than a sports event. To the people of Hawai‘i, this is history. Screw the Superferry and drown the whales, THE WARRIORS ARE GOING TO THE SUGAR BOWL! Can you believe it? If you’re anything like me, it still seems like I’m gonna wake up and it will all be one big dream. I was thinking that it should be some sort of holiday or something, but it’s already New Year’s day so whatever. The point is that after years and years of us Hawai‘i folk making football pools on mainland teams we finally get to bet on our own boys, which is so awesome I can barely stand it. If you want to watch it in a festive, testosterone filled environment like I do, head to the Kahului Ale House which will have the game playing on all 30 of their televisions. Coors Lite, Bud Light and Bud will all be selling for three bucks a pint. Oh, and in case you didn’t already know (but like it really matters) the Warriors are up against the Georgia Bulldogs and will be playing at the Louisiana Superdome which is going to sell out at 72,000 seats. Get to the Ale House early. It’ll be standing room only. The game’s also showing on Fox Sports and broadcasted on ESPN radio. 355 E. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului, 877-9001. [STARR BEGLEY]

[ART] There was really no English (Eigo) phrase to describe artist Hisashi Otsuka, so I went with the native tongue. Loosely translated it means something like “elegant traditional Japanese art.” Otsuka’s kind of like a samurai, wielding a paintbrush instead of a sword. He has remarkable dedication to his work and is skilled in both Zen and the martial arts. The discipline that he embodies is evident in his artistic endeavors. His work has a very traditional, impeccable, old school feel while also being very modern in its tone. How is this possible? I have no idea, but trust me it’s true. Meet him amid wine and pupus at Lahaina Galleries. For more info 661-6264 or www.HisashiOtsuka.com.

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
The Best of Movies 2007 Every year film critics love to bemoan what a lousy lot of movies the previous twelve months have wrought as if the art of filmmaking were hitting an all time low. In 2007, stinkers like 300, A Mighty Heart, Because I Said So, Code Name: The Cleaner, Fay Grim, The Hitcher, The Invasion, The Number 23, Revolver, Southland Tales, Year of the Dog and Youth Without Youth threatened to overshadow underrated treasures like Olivier Dahan and Sebastien Caudron’s La Vie En Rose or Ken Loach’s The Wind that Shakes the Barley by their sheer volume of odious influence. But 2007 was still a tremendous year for high quality movies that elevated the craft. In the realm of conspicuous film criticism certain New York reviewers might favor Julian Schnabel’s Diving Bell and Butterfly, for its rendering of a stroke victim only able to communicate with his left eye, over Paul Verhoeven’s thematically rich Black Book, an epic tale of the Dutch resistance during WWII. Los Angeles critics can split between the Coen brothers’ hardscrabble noir thriller No
There will be criticism of this choice...
Country for Old Men and Paul Thomas Anderson’s magnificent portrait of capitalist greed There Will Be Blood, with Daniel Day-Lewis devouring its massive narrative landscape with a single squint of his uncompromising eyes. Notably, it was a period that magical realism came into its own as a genre for escapism with varying grades of grit. Movies like Atonement, The Darjeeling Limited, Lars and the Real Girl, Love in the Time of Cholera, The Martian Child, Slipstream, Wristcutters: A Love Story
and even Todd Haynes’ ode to Bob Dylan I’m Not There all shared magical realist themes that went beyond their geographical and cultural context for audiences to decode. It was also a year made up of war pictures, mediocre and great (skip Lions for Lambs, but see In the Valley of Elah), that audiences avoided like the plague, and a period in which the previous year’s promising surge of documentaries receded like the surf before a tsunami. But no thinking critic could neglect 2007 as the year of the returning auteur director. Paul Thomas Anderson, Joel and Ethan Cohen, David Cronenberg, Frank Darabont, David Fincher, Paul Haggis, Todd Haynes, Werner Herzog, Ang Lee, Ken Loach, Sidney Lumet, Sean Penn, Quentin Tarantino and Paul Verhoeven all reestablished their careers with challenging films that redefined modern cinema as a social prism through which all human experience coalesces. The quality of storytelling from these master filmmakers set a high watermark reflected in the resonant execution of films by upcoming directors ahead of the curve, such as Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud (Persepolis), Olivier Dahan and Sebastien
Caudron (La Vie En Rose), and Joe Wright (Atonement). Even with the writers’ strike threatening to prevent Hollywood’s Academy Award ceremony from taking center stage on televisions across the country, it’s a sure bet that this year’s Oscar nominations will gravitate around films that are by any standard moving, entertaining, and inventive. My top ten films of 2007 are: 10. Stephen King’s The Mist 9. Persepolis 8. Atonement 7. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford 6. La Vie en Rose 5. Rescue Dawn 4. No Country for Old Men 3. Zodiac 2. Black Book 1. There will be Blood Honorable mention goes to: 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu), 3:10 to Yuma (James Mangold), Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (Sidney Lumet), Eastern Promises (David Cronenberg), Grindhouse (Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez), I’m Not There (Todd Haynes), In the Valley of Elah (Paul Haggis), Into the Wild (Sean Penn), Juno (Jason Reitman), Lars and the Real Girl (Craig Gillespie), The Lookout (Scott Frank), Michael Clayton (Tony Gilroy), Nanking (William Guttentag and Dan Sturman), No End In Sight (Craig Ferguson), Sicko (Michael Moore), and The Wind That Shakes the Barley (Ken Loach). Imitating Nature

Jules Stevens’ bamboo sculptures break the mold I’ve dabbled in ceramics for about 15 years. And by dabbled I mean sculpted naked people, because naked’s what I tend to do best. I’ve also tried my hand in rolling slabs, which I couldn’t get into because it was too tedious. Also, I harbor secret fantasies about Demi Moore in Ghost. I can’t quite figure out if it’s Moore or The Swaze that I’m attracted to, or which crush would be more disturbing. Regardless, my experience on the potter’s wheel nearly ended in disaster when the wheel came flying off and nearly struck my very pregnant ceramics teacher. The last time I sunk my hands into a wet mound of clay was about a year ago. It was disappointing—it all felt so rigid and limited. I felt that my love affair with the medium was absolutely over. But last weekend, as I was wandering around Kahului Airport, I came across a ceramics exhibit by Maui artist Jules Stevens. I wasn’t expecting to react like I did. My first impression was, “Eh. Clay.” Then I actually looked at it closely and felt the telltale tingle in my body that signifies seeing something that inspires me. I fell head over heels in love with clay all over again With her bamboo collection, Stevens has taken ceramics in a totally different direction. “I’ve worked with clay for about 20 years,” she said. “One of the things that I’ve had to deal with is its limitations. I’ve found a lot of limitations that I’ve had to come up with solutions for.” Size and rigidity bothered Stevens. “If I wanted to do something big I’d have to get a huge kiln or do it in bronze so that it wouldn’t crack,” she said. “So then I decided that maybe I would work in sections and then stack the sections on top of one another to create height.” While working on a project of this type, she spent time in a friend’s garden that was loaded with all different types of bamboo. She decided to start experimenting with the look of bamboo as it is in nature. The clinch was that bamboo is fluid and sways with the wind. So she found a piece of bamboo, made a mold and then handbuilt a clay bamboo segment. She then stacked the segments onto one another

until she had a stalk that was life size. “Once I solved the problem of how to be able to build the actual bamboo, I had to figure out what to use to stack them on,” she said. “I ended up using rebar and a concrete base.” It wasn’t long before she realized that what she was currently doing had strayed from simple ceramics and was now more of an industrial art. “I’d pour the concrete base and then tint and sand it,” Stevens said. “At first I was using a hacksaw to cut through the rebar and it would take forever. Then my boyfriend introduced me to this tool that cuts through it like butter.” The result is stunning; the bamboo sculptures she creates are large and actually move in the wind. One is installed at the Hui No Eau Visual Art Center and others are making their way onto the properties of private collectors. “People can choose whether to have them standing on their base or I can install them right into the ground,” she said. “It’s kind of cool that way. It looks like they’re growing.” For more information www.MauiPotter.com. MTW

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Surprise, surprise. One of those people who’s always opposed you has decided to speak up again this week to tell everyone how wrong you are. You’re used to this by now, so hopefully you’ll be able to defend yourself without getting huffy or petty. Making a good impression right now is an especially good idea because someone you’ve never teamed up with before is considering hopping over to your side of the fence. I don’t need to tell you what a great ally s/he’d be, but it might motivate you to know this: if you get him or her to come around, you’ll get everyone to come around.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’ve never been gung-ho for instant gratification (just find a Leo or Gemini if you need an expert on the topic), but you do fall prey to its charms occasionally. You’ve learned that there are often consequences that come with demanding what you want, now, and they’re only occasionally worth the satisfaction of having your whims granted. This week, beware the temptation to push too hard to get what you want as soon as possible. Letting things unfold at a more natural pace may take patience but is more likely to result in success. What’s more, if you allow events to happen that way, they’re also likely to come with at least one or two pleasant surprises.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) A friend of mine is taking some medicinal drug whose side effects often include intense, frequently unpleasant dreams. You, of all people, should know what he’s going through, since you often have these without the help of any pharmaceutical substance. His strategy for shaking them off as quickly as possible is to have a sense of humor about them. Follow his lead. Making things funny (even when they’re awful) is your best weapon this week against unpleasantness of all sorts, both inside your head and out in the world. Make jokes of everything that bothers you; the worse they are, the more you ought to make fun of them. Laugh long, laugh hard, and laugh often. It’s better than crying.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It’s so easy to get distracted, I know. And all those distractions are such great fun, since whatever you’re supposed to be paying attention to really isn’t all that thrilling. It might even be a drag. However, toeing the line now will result in more excitement later than can be had from indulging even your wildest whims now, so it’s well worth it. In other words, put up with the drudgery of doing your job, whatever it may be, and wait until later to be whimsical and carefree, when you can afford to, and have a clear conscience, besides.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Misery loves company. In this case, someone else’s misery would love your company. Don’t go over to their dark side, though, no matter what tactics they use to get you to come there. You don’t need to sever your connection with whatever sad sack is trying (probably unwittingly) to drag you down, but you need to be sure to dig in your heels and resist being sucked in. Tugging them free of their doldrums might be an option, and is certainly worth a try, but don’t be too hard on yourself if it’s not possible. You may have to settle from waving to them from your side of the fence, where the grass is greener, and making sure they know they’re welcome to clamber over and come hang out.
Available at more
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’ve worked hard to get to where you are. Let’s be realistic, though; most of your motivation has been mostly selfish; you did it to make yourself better off in some way. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. However, here you are, and because of all that hard work, you’re in a position to help another—perhaps many others. It might not immediately occur to you, because it’s not exactly in line with your original intentions, but I hope you’ll consider doing it anyway—not because it’s the holidays, but just because it’s a really good thing to do.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) In conflicts like the ones you’ll face this week, there is no right and wrong. Because of your loyal nature, you’re likely to see things in stark moral black and white, but in actuality all of this stuff is cast in shades of grey. You’re not exactly in the best position to mediate these kinds of fights, because of your strong personal opinions on the subject, but it would be brilliant if you could take yourself out of the equation as much as possible (since it has very little to do with you, anyway) and try to be an unbiased negotiator. If you can help both sides get along—or amicably agree to disagree—you’ll have done your job, and then some.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re a creature of routine. Don’t deny it. Although you’re perfectly capable of rolling with surprises and breaking from your rhythms, secretly you’re quite attached to certain things you do every day, and miss them when you don’t have the chance to indulge in them. The holidays are full of fun but that’s mitigated somewhat by being away from your tried and true, reliable sources of comfort and joy. This week, try not to be too attached to your pleasurable old habits—though recreating some might be possible, finding new (and possibly better) ones is even more likely.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) On a long plane ride, blood pools in your feet, causing them to swell. If you can, it’s a good idea to get up and walk around periodically, or raise your feet a little. Your emotions can settle like that when unstirred for long periods, becoming sluggish and hard to cram into your shoes. Exercising them, too, so you can stay limber and open, is a good idea this week. How to do that? Crying and laughing (even at the same time) is a good warm-up, even if it takes a movie to get the tears flowing and the giggles jumpstarted. But don’t stop there. There’s plenty of tragedy and hilarity in your real life. Maybe now you’ll notice.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Remember that every gift has a dark side, including yours. Being able to see both sides of an argument means you’re a brilliant mediator, but it makes it difficult to take an unequivocal stand on anything that’s the least bit questionable. I’m sure you wish you never had to face another “it’s us or them” situation, but this week is likely to present you with one. Here, seeing the positive and negative aspects of both sides’ positions will make choosing one over another seem nearly impossible. However, neither party will allow you to abstain from this one. Quit begging everyone to “just get along,” pick the boat that seems least likely to sink, and hop on board.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) One of the things I like about you is your attitude: “I am what I am. Love it or leave it.” It’s clear and honest and open. But the truth is you’re not quite as badass as you make yourself out to be. There’s room for flexibility and compromise. You don’t need to bend yourself over backwards to accommodate someone, as your Libran neighbors might, but allowing a hint that other possibilities are even possible is a fantastic idea. Contortionist, you’re not. We know that already. But can you be a little bit flexible? Let’s see if you can touch your toes, or agree to give something new a try this week. That, at least, would be a start.
MAUI’S ONLY LOCALLY OWNED INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER www.mauitime.com
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Things aren’t as dire as you think. Yes, you’re caught in the grip of a fast current with a potential lethal and certainly unavoidable waterfall up ahead. However, you have some time. You don’t need to grab at the first paddle or lifesaver thrown at you. You have a few minutes to pick and choose and consider your various options. They’re all better than your current situation, but one is probably a lot better than the others. Avoid having to go over the falls in a barrel or an inflatable raft. Head for the helicopter.

The Eye of the Hurricane Isn’t it weird how a year can simultaneously feel like it flew by and still seem like it’s been forever? That’s what happened in 2007, which was a great year for me. In fact, I can’t think of a past year that went as well as this one did. The year brought a ton of changes, mostly good, and a lot of letting go (slightly painful, but still good). This time last year, I was looking longingly at the 2006 Maui Time Christmas card. I was just freelancing for Maui Time and wasn’t part of the cult… err, ohana. A few months earlier, Samantha Campos had stumbled across an article I wrote for a travel publication and asked me to write for the paper. Since Holoholo Girl was a Maui celebrity, I was flattered and took her up on the offer. I remember thinking to myself that she had my dream job. I had been writing for years and though I always had an assignment, I wasn’t making a living off of it. As for Sam, I liked her right away–what’s not to like about hot and witty? But still, I totally wanted her job. In January I was offered a part-time position at the paper as Calendar Editor. The drawback was that I had to quit my almost six-year gig writing for Maui Weekly, which sucked (the quitting, not the gig). In fact, I almost didn’t take the job because of that. But the position had the word “editor” in it and I gave in to the seduction. For the next six months, I compiled a gazillion calendar events and wrote when asked to–which turned out to be often. Like the Dalai Lama and the future of sex technology–not at the same time, though that would be pretty cool. On the home front, the first half of the year was also a time of transitions. 2006 sucked ass for my marriage and by the end of the year, my husband and I had had it. Friends, family and ex’s busied themselves exchanging “I told you so’s” while we filled out divorce papers. Then at the last minute, we changed our minds. I’m not sure if we chickened out or if we both sunk our heels into the ground and decided that we’d channel our stubborn natures into fighting for our relationship. Whatever it was, we agreed on a “trial period” of a few months before we gave each other the final flip-off. I’m assuming that you all know how it turned out. I got the job and saved my marriage all in 12 short months. And I can tell you how for only three payments of $19.95, so pick up the phone and call in now! Truth is, I have no idea why everything turned out so well. I guess with the job situation, I was in the right place at the right time. Sure, I’ll take some credit for busting my ass for a decade writing random articles. But mostly, I think it was luck. As for my marriage, that took a little more, but not as much as I imagined. The lesson for me was about trying to let go of the past–and its people, ideas, wins and losses. It’s been about growing up and focusing on my family instead of everyone around me. The results have been nothing short of amazing. Here I am, sitting in my very own—though slightly messy—office with my overstuffed chair and Bettie Page poster on the wall, with a solid marriage and a steady paycheck. Of course, I can’t help but think that things always seem really spiffy before blowing up in your face. Stay tuned for 2008. Starr Begley would like to party like it’s 1999 one last time. MTW
